"Parents scared the daylights out of me about one of my uncles. Got his teenage girlfriend. Pregnant and got married young and didn't finish high school like an on. The parent of two girls are four and five. But i'm not going to scare them like that. I'm going to tell them to actually having kids as the greatest thing you can do and it's really important. I just think more general awareness instead of saying kids make you not happy which is a whole literature on this that say your happiness clients when you have kids the other thing is probably support by you know i kids later in life and we have a nanny because you know i made more money like i think it's really hard if you don't have support in our child care system is so awful so so better support like social supports for to have kids in. Yeah i just think there's a way to turn this around. I mean we. We've depended on immigration right. In america we dependent on immigrants coming here having more kids than we do like my grandparents having set. You know seven aside from italy. Southern italy but yeah. I think there's stuff we can do. And i think we're better off for it. You know. i think we've been accomplished society. I hate to say this. Monica and maybe somebody will drop my head off. I think we've become a society. That's kind of biased against kids. We send out a message that that it's hard that it's hard work. It's no fun but also that it's expensive that ties you down that it's an encumbrance on your personal freedom and i you know i'll tell you the truce if my wife wasn't persevering in didn't have the seventeen. Id abson was chicken. As i am in a given up. I would miss the greatest joy in my life. That's tell i'm a guy who said i don't want kids fine with my profession self actualising. I would have missed the greatest joy my life. So maybe that's what you should tell people like these things are really miraculous in. They're fantastic and to build a society which which reflects that rather than decided it says if you have these kids you're going to give up. Something is going to be hard. I think it's more social and the public policies support right. An ecosystem of childcare is or but more. It's a societal norm. In a sense that having kids as a joyful experience well as someone who is expecting their first. I'm happy to hear you say that. Oh holy god. Congratulations and you're younger than me. So you did it right writer. Letterman always said this. And i don't like folks. I mean david letterman always had this thing to do over hewitt kid more kids in more kids early and i would say it i agree. Let's take a quick break when we return. Monica on richard will explore how the pandemic may fundamentally change cities like seattle. We'll be right back and though is here to help you. Achieve a certain operative state. I'm joined here today. With max zaitsev and all of its ski and they are the co founders of cool service called endel. The neuro science of music is music. Big part of that in like. Why does that help. People get to that more calming place. What is it about music or sound. Sound is very powerful. It's known that it's proven that by using certain frequencies scales intones were can make you run scared by more. Relax sleep focus. There's a lot of research. Are there some of that research..

"Twenty four to twenty nine years yeah. It's it's kind of reminds me of the sends balking on the rumored cody c. For taylor hall trade back day before the devils stepped in with adam larsson whereas oh well you know this is a big defenceman who's combine. We drafted him early. And so we are afraid of passing on his potential. It's like after a certain period of time. If all you have an remember species time and it's a similar thing was slide where it's like. Oh look at all the manatees playing well just because he's literally playing those minutes doesn't mean that he should be or that he's using them effectively to actually return your bang for the buck and it's not translating into results and ultimately the senators had to take a massive l. on it because they basically just wound up trae nc for for nikita zaitsev. And that's what they were half the show for their blind faith and i think it is a valuable skill for any organization out there to be able to emotionally detach themselves from former high pick of theirs and critically and sort of quickly Determine how good that player actually isn't will be and whether it's golden whether they should sell on i'm gonna just remarkable to think of what could have been traded for for so many years and how we kept talking about it. They should do. They should do it. And teams are still interested and now i really do genuinely wonder if he was made publicly available. What the best thing they could get is because it would make the team better just by not giving those benefits by. It'll be really really tough bill. Swallow publicly and save face after just comparing it to what was available years prior. Yeah it's it's crazy to go back and look at all. The first round picks a Dora gregory polanco neulander. I mean we're we're at the point. Where we're having conversation on casey middle stats. Did you know pull back on android emory. Now it's yet. He's he's the guy that remains here. And it's i don't know i don't know what it is An auto lakes some maybe that that helps Ralph krueger's a big fan of his. That's one of the reasons why. There's no trade cheddar. This year. Because i think pretty presents the fact is coming back the market it wouldn't be good anyways The coach really genuinely likes them. So he's the de facto assistant. Gm at this point. So he's he's coming back and we're gonna do this again banger off the wall again and keep wondering why you know. We're not getting the result tear in Keep are just gonna point at him and it's not going to change its maddening to figure out that this guy is probably going on his contract You know in for this team. It's it shouldn't be that way but it is what it is. Forget finishing his contract. I'm curious to see what is next contract. Looks like did that. This fear though right. You mean Front about the day. And i said you know if they extend him. I'm like i'm going to cover another team. I'm going to go cover seattle if they give him a contract. That's the final offering me. I cannot contain carbon in hockey lincoln. Just they'd be the most egregious move. I think any organization should go that great but be. It'd be bad little. It'd be nonsense all right. Well let's let's talk. What's i mean. It's more positive than because you know the taylor hall signing.

"I'm not sure that this is reached you in edmonton or not but it certainly was a big story over the last few days here in the auto area we have they provincial cabinet minister by the name of lisa mcleod here in town i read this yeah tell me more well she was at a rolling stones concert and she sees sends owner eugene melnyk end in an interview with citizen over the weekend melnik said he was with a group of people at the rolling stones concert in berry when he saw someone trying to bust through and he says i'm thinking okay might be a crazed fan and that's fine i've gotten used to that and all of a sudden there's this woman and she yells at i mean do you know who i am melnik says i couldn't place there so i said i'm sorry no and she yells i am here minister in europe king piece of shit in europe king loser now she does admit lisa mcleod that she did in fact give him some quote unquote feedback at the show andy she apologized to him for quote being so blunt but she didn't go into detail about what she actually said only writing that she is serious concerns about the state of arbel loved ottawa senators and so as someone who's a i again a big autism advocate a not very happy whiff of the reforms at least mcleod had to autism funding in ontario and i'm certainly in as it makes sense fan not very a you know not very fond of e auto senator reforms that melting he's been responsible for this is a real battle of titans from me well i i i when i hear these stories i'm always in treat it like a car accident when when someone tells you about just like you were i'm like what oh yeah yeah you you said the quote an effing an effing piece of shit and then effing loser well i actually said the words and you did not what kind of world and we in right now that's crazy yeah well my my brothers holding a gun to my neck saint don't know i have no doubt a so some of this i don't mind you know some of it is the human side austin where the where it comes out were not all perfect and this this lady goes off sound like he was in a box i guess or or some sort of private area and she comes crashing in there and and gives them the what to see the the one to so some of it's like yeah that aerial that's that's kind of real i get it you know maybe a little upset but you should should she be dismissed a as a as a minister she'd be demoted property to your property something's gonna happen to this girl if i if i'm the head of the party and he got this loose cannon they're freaking oh you're at a concert okay let's add that up maybe having a couple and lost her mind and went in there and and and freaked out so not a good the momento this apology she gave melnik cold at flippant he is not real happy with it and 'em you said it had nothing to do with the ottawa senators she didn't even mention the ottawa senators she's trying to justify with her apology but she didn't even acknowledge that she made a mistake and like you said mounted complained pre mir doug ford in a letter that he sent on monday of last week in a ford essay called a couple of times demonic in and said did you apologize and he's like no no and ford responded with all crap and so he's trying to flip the fire right between these two i'm not really you know in the premium best interests have one of its wealthiest but i shouldn't say meltzer residency more resident in barbados "I'm not sure that this is reached you in edmonton or not but it certainly was a big story over the last few days here in the auto area we have they provincial cabinet minister by the name of lisa mcleod here in town i read this yeah tell me more well she was at a rolling stones concert and she sees sends owner eugene melnyk end in an interview with citizen over the weekend melnik said he was with a group of people at the rolling stones concert in berry when he saw someone trying to bust through and he says i'm thinking okay might be a crazed fan and that's fine i've gotten used to that and all of a sudden there's this woman and she yells at i mean do you know who i am melnik says i couldn't place there so i said i'm sorry no and she yells i am here minister in europe king piece of shit in europe king loser now she does admit lisa mcleod that she did in fact give him some quote unquote feedback at the show andy she apologized to him for quote being so blunt but she didn't go into detail about what she actually said only writing that she is serious concerns about the state of arbel loved ottawa senators and so as someone who's a i again a big autism advocate a not very happy whiff of the reforms at least mcleod had to autism funding in ontario and i'm certainly in as it makes sense fan not very a you know not very fond of e auto senator reforms that melting he's been responsible for this is a real battle of titans from me well i i i when i hear these stories i'm always in treat it like a car accident when when someone tells you about just like you were i'm ottawa senators she didn't even mention the ottawa senators she's trying to justify with her apology but she didn't even acknowledge that she made a mistake and like you said mounted complained pre mir doug ford in a letter that he sent on monday of last week in a ford essay called a couple of times demonic in and said did you apologize and he's like no no and ford responded with all crap and so "New Jersey Devils and Boston had selected Sagan and now he's member of the Dallas Stars. It's hard to answer that question. David, not knowing where hall is going to end up, but Sagan has been very good for Dallas. Dallas wants to the conference final last year. Getting a chance to play with Jamie Ben one of the better players in the league as well. So when you talk about future knowing that Sagan's star, maybe Sagan, but halls already want, an MVP. So I think it's pretty much an open debate right now with not knowing where halls going to be for the twenty nineteen twenty season or even beyond that via free agency. It's tough to say I think it's still very much in the air forever T, eight says great Cup final so far. Really like the fact that we're getting a deep series question is are the least already in cap? Trouble. The mourner thing is already concerned. Well, you knew that when you gave the contract to knee Lander. And then before. Or that giving the contract Austin Matthews that you were going to be in a cap dilemma. And mourner was the one that everybody circled and said that might be somebody, you're going to have to lose. So there's already talked that he could be dealt. Zaitsev is also somebody that is on the trading block, which I find curious considering how difficult it is to get depth at defense, but it's been a struggle for him in Toronto to me. I think I'd want to figure it out before I trade them away, but the rumors are they're going to deal him. But yeah, these are the cap ramifications. When you have that many good players, the cap is going to go up, but will it go a high enough that you can afford to give the contracts that you've given out, and in retrospect, forever, t h looking how Neil and replayed last year was it the smart move to give him the money, I think mourners a better player but cap trouble is certainly something that that's, that's on the horizon for this Toronto team. They're gonna have to get very creative. Or Kaufman says blue struggling power play is a double issue. One, they're not cashing in on the power play chances in to the Bruins can play them more aggressively without really fearing any consequences. What can the blues due to get going? It can really end up costing them the cop while it's great great point because. That is been the biggest problem with the Saint Louis blues is they have not cashed in on their power play opportunities. The Bruins continue to do well, on the power play, of course going four for four last night. They only went oh for two but still very dangerous. And I mentioned it on the Michael cash show didn't get a chance to mention it on the podcast yesterday because I didn't know who the officials were going to be Gordie Dwyer and Chris, Rooney were the officials and the blues going into last night, where collective eight and one of the postseason when one of those two have been been the team and that was also the team that we saw in game to let them play we only saw five powerplays combined. So letting the blues play certainly worked to their advantage for sure. Because the Bruins didn't get the four five power plays where they really can sink their teeth into the blues week penalty kill and take advantage of it. So that was a huge turning point. But you're right. If you tell me, why did the blues lose this series of eventually? They lose it. It's going to be because of the special. Teams now EJ brought it up yesterday when the Bruins won their Cup in two thousand eleven they were miserable on the power play. And let's also give Boston credit..

"And, you know, his guys play a lot of playoff games. These played one hundred playoff games in the last few years teams are always looking for centers. I don't know where it's going to be. I think he understands you might have to take a one year deal. But I think this is a guy who is saying, if you give me a chance, I'm gonna make it worth your while we're going to get to Vancouver, a little bit later on the podcast Elliott, but before we get there, Alex editor. So I've heard some really interesting things about this whole situation. There is definitely a feeling that this has gone off the rails. But one thing that people have always warned me about is, you know, the real deadline is coming up, if it's not. July first and self or I guess July twenty third when you can our twenty fifth or whatever it is. When you can start I start talking to players this week is a big week for a lot of teams. They want to know where their guys are going to be going, if they're staying or going, I have heard San Jose, if they lose some of their d I still think there's a chance that, you know, maybe Vancouver in him sorted out. But this is definitely more difficult than anybody expected. It would be. And there are people convinced he will not be going back to Vancouver. But again, look, if he really wants to go back and they really want them there's a path there. I hesitate to say one hundred percent yes or no? But there's no question this has been a lot harder than everybody thought it was going to be is it too. Simple to say the issue is only term the issue is one term and to. To expansion drafts availability. They want him eligible from the expansion draft. He doesn't wanna be speaking of d Jake Gardner. I've heard some interesting things about Jake Gardner, one of the kind of interesting things that's happening in Toronto right now is the whole Marlow Zaitsev thing, and one of the reasons that he was going to be out in Toronto was. They just didn't have the cap room to keep them all of a sudden, there's some interesting stuff happening in Toronto like if they move Marlow, and if they move Zaitsev, depending on what they do they can have some cap room. I think they want to bring Gardner back. I think you have perfect world. He wants to stay, but I think I'd have to see what would happen with all these other moves to see if it would be possible. Some guys said they think that Montreal might be on gardener. I don't know about that one. I'm not as sure about that. But I think there's always. His time for puck moving defenseman in this league. And I think you'll have no problem finding a spot. You know, Chicago at the combine, you know, people said that they were kind of downplaying their interest in UF av. If everybody's vying that as much you wonder what they'll do a number three where they could sny the defenseman from Vancouver as well some talk. They may trade that pick and move down and try to grab forward anyway. More on that may believe situation, you just talked about a second and go a little bit later on the podcast. Meantime, Wayne Simmons. You know, Wayne Simmons is a really interesting case, you know, he's a guy who really had a tough year and it looked really bad for him at the start of the play offs. But what one guy told me was, Pat. Maroon and what he's done in the play offs is going to help a lot of guys like Wayne Simmons because teams are going to look at this, and they're going to say there's room for these guys, especially in the postseason. So I don't think Wayne Simmons is necessarily going to get the kind of term he hoped for. But I think the market for him is going to be better than some of us may be thought at the end of the year. If he's healthy enough to go, and he does take pretty good care of himself. I think that there's going to be interest because of what maroon did Brian Boyle. Do you say the same thing? Yeah. And also, you know, these guys. Boil in and Simmons, they have stellar reputations..

"New book is Stalingrad the city the defeated the Third Reich. This story of one battle that comes together from the summer of forty two to the winter forty three at first it is not identified as the show place for the for the Third Reich and the Soviet Union to show their strengths to the world. But as the course of the battle spills out, especially from August until September and into October the dictator in Berlin Hitler and the dictator in Moscow Stalin, both identified that Stalingrad is the place to show who's the superior military force who's stronger, the Russian soldier or the German soldier important to understand that not all the soldiers fighting on these two sides are the Russians are Germans, they have allies. And some of the allies are whose Bax are. Kazaks or Tatas from the nationalities in through the Soviet Union the allies for the Germans come from Czechoslovakia from Greece from Romania from Italy right now, we're concentrating on a Siberian who comes from the west. He belongs to the Siberian battalion. He's a simple man born into what he describes as a peasant family. His name is Zeta chef he becomes very famous at the time as a sniper, and this becomes a way of talking about a superior kind of fighting that works in Stalingrad the snipers of we earlier we talked about garage Somow heading up his unit his snipers became the most effective weapon. He had fighting urban warfare. Professor snipers eight SAF he is the one who is Hollywood is in barbarians at the gate. He's he's not a Hollywood actor. He is a real person who. Eventually was wounded badly and had the shakes the rest of his life. He died in nineteen Ninety-one. However in telling his story, there was some there was some merit to it that exceeded that the details of his ability to shoot, what is it that the commission saw an Zaitsev? What did they believe that the public would see in his story? Well site says was already a hero by the time. The commission interviewed him. In fact, they got a hold of him. And this is a postal in grad interview that started in April forty three the first part. And then they they produce a second installment because it was so rich and informative that they kept interviewing and ask him to to interview them again in in summer forty-three. So when they met him in April forty three they met him in Moscow, where he was, you know, just to to to get the medal the hero of the Soviet Union medal, which you receive in the Kremlin. And so that's why they they got a. A hold of him. And that also explains why they were so eager to speak with him because he was one of the most famous individuals in the battle of Stalingrad already at that time with this count of is the numbers diverge, but in in in in in excess of two hundred forty verified kills of of Germans. So he he was not the deadliest sniper of all times, they were others who were who proved that liberty was one of the most popular ones are. So clearly there was this aspiration to to to to get his story and to get it out in all the documents that they collected the into we interview with sites of his one of two or three that they actually were able to publish during the war. So that again, this is a reflection of how important Zaitsev was to these historians. He he gives us a quote, unless you've killed at least one German in a given day your day has been wasted. He's actually a quote from from Aaron Bork, a writer whose words are are written it printed on the so called killing books. So every every soldier would get a killing book or sort of a a record Cape for record keeping how many enemies he had killed. How many times how many guns hit destroyed airplane sought cetera? And and and and so hey, treds was was used with implanted is a soldier to to to get them to shoot more enemies than what I find fascinating about Zaitsev is he's not asked to say this. It just comes out offhandedly at says, well, how how come I shot so many, and how come I don't feel anything about it, except continued hatred is think about the pictures, you see the parks, the girls, the civilians that are that are hung. That the supposed part of us who are left there dangling from the gallows or the girls and women that they deport and you you hear them. Shout helped me help me comrades. And then they're being taken away to be raped. So he sees this helpless at the time. And and of course, it infuses him to to to do something. And so I I believe that the propaganda hatred that that coalesce with your own experience of similar scenes of atrocities is a very very powerful motivator here, and that that comes out quite well in in in the interview, I'm struck by his education. He details in his reading where he became a bookkeeper for the fourth submarine brigade. This is a nineteen thirty nine he comes from Siberia. So originally he was part of the army of the far east. He joined the navy, but eventually this bookkeeper winds up to be this shot fighting in Stalingrad and in prepare. Hiring for his time in the in in the Soviet military. He read a novel that I don't know. But apparently, this was recommended reading for people who joined the army why what's in it. Oh, chip I have is is a wonderful book. And in fact, it was also made into very popular movie in the nineteen thirties. And I think you're touching something very important there. I think it's important when you want to understand the people had war. It's on either side, you need to see what kind of a culture they were steeped in what kind of culture, they come from what kind of prewar, we're ten culture the descend from. And so reading is is incredibly important on on the Soviet side of the writers are so such important figures. And so two is about the civil war. And it's about the an impetuous kind of spontaneous military commander with no, real intellectual background. Who is then and joined who who is send a party commissar a teacher figure as his twin to attain and and direct. The military commander. And so this this the the twin figures the leader and the commissar his name is form on those. They then produced a stunning results and business all out, it's an autobiographical novel. So it's it's it's been steeped, in fact, and so stories from the civil war. I've such important background and conditioner for soldiers in World War Two under Soviet side, another they're famous book that I think topped any other including ship by his how the steel was tempered. And it's all about the goal of total total bodily self sacrifice for the cost of the hero is another civil war veteran who loses limbs, then he loses his eyesight and he's paralyzed. But he keeps fighting and then eventually when he can't raise a gun. What he does is. He writes his autobiography so that others can learn from it. So the book is another weapon of sorts, and you know, ultimately, not only civil war. Literature was produced but also Russian literature about other wars was being serialized in great numbers Tolstoy's, worn piece, some people read or hurt the whole thing. It was aired. And and then grad the whole the whole novel. And I think thirtieth stolman or if he didn't have the time like in the Red Army. There were short versions. There was like manuals about how to teach the lessons of warranties to Red Army soldiers in the trenches because we're going to turn now to the intellectual of the book. His name is Ian's kofsky that will allow us to explore both how the the Russians thought about their propaganda, and how it influenced the Germans what the Germans thought of the Russian propaganda. And also the question of morale the German morale collapsed the Russian morale just went higher and higher. What was the lesson there? And one of the themes of professor held Beck's book is the lesson. Of the commissars the political officers who spoke to the men during the day about why they were fighting.

"'cause I mean, this guy hasn't spent a full season in the National Hockey League. He lit it up in the minors last year. But I mean, I just it's a lot of pressure on that at center ice with with with a couple of wingers that aren't really proven up top. I would say, haggling hit or miss. I mean, I love what he brings as far as speeds concern. I mean, there was rumors that kessel wasn't happy, and there was some maybe some conflict with the coach. I don't know how how, how his attitudes going to be coming into the season. You know, he's hot and cold sometimes, but other than that boys, I like your guys comments on the goaltending. And I think that the back ends, it's it's solid. It's it's, it's Eastern Conference solid. So that's all I got. Yeah, don't forget. Look at the defense, Pittsburgh one. They'll ask couple. Yes. It wasn't anything to write home about. Wasn't like a hall of fame Laden roster was just solid. They got the job done Tang. Right, right. Yeah, Jack, you'd say this though, in order to to make another run, they're going to have to make a big deadline move to get another scoring winger. That's my opinion on it. And that's the nuts. They, they seem to kind of pull it off by every time they went a coup-. It seems like they showed up pull that move off. So this leaves us with one final team and wouldn't you know it to Winston Stanley Cup champion, Washington Capitals, not. To report Grenell. Right on the common Dolan's. Yeah, not much Alex chase on left. Philip grew Bauer left, and they brought in Dimitri Zaitsev left and they didn't really bring in any big names. No. I mean, they didn't need to Jeff Beagles and other guy who left. He went back for some nice cabbage. Yeah, the Cup champs, they the one guy. They did lose Brooks. They managed to bring him back. They, they included him. The Philip grew our trade. But yes, same thing is is Pittsburgh. Basically the time is now for this team. They got one, they wanna get another one. I'm sure Alex Ovechkin would love to catch. Go get a little closer to Crosby. They've been rivals for a decade running now. I'm sure he'd like to to get top number two. You know, they got unbelievable forwards though. Coups nets off Backstrom Oshii John Wilson got paid Jacob. Rana had a great playoffs Berkoff. He was great in these, the same pretty much Palsson disconent all off campany or BIC brain hope he's back. So this is the same team essentially coming back. It's the Bill to win now and in just going to be a matter if they can pull it off, but they didn't need to do anything and they didn't have to go out and do anything. What do you got on a witch..
