"Voice which had some great role models for that. When example bill is talking. I was thinking of his like his death. So bills on the road. Fairmount usually a couple of days a week but like makes it a priority. I mean he's been to Houston back two days this week. Which is a three hour trip? There are three hour trip back For assuming no traffic yeah exactly But he's made a very conscious decision to say if I don't have to spend a night away. I'm not going to and there's a lot of sacrifice in like five. Am Mornings that that means and things like that but he saw the same thing. Your Dad made that same choice and model that really well and so in the same thing I was thinking about like as well as like work hard but then also play hard and these are things like. I've gotten to observe in the way bills family does. It is not saying my doesn't but it just it's really neat to see those things at play where it's like even we're we were kind of telling you were about to go and have some fun this afternoon and with bill's entire kind of family and it's extended on the fact that there's a continuing education conference happening at the hotel so they're phenomenal at like kind of turning Something that is working career thing into also a chance to then turn that off and be together and play hard and and so I just think that over rhythm yeah when they call a boondoggle styles that before that new. So it's just I feel very grateful that we've seen that done. Well that is great. How much do you guys talk about work at home? Some again couples have varying ways that they approach it. Some people are like no works stays at work and when we're home. How do you guys transition from work to home or do you talk about or how do you set boundaries? I think that we talk sometimes about were too much. But we definitely don't talk about it always. And so when I mean. So there's just the base level practicality of it is a reality for us of hey I have to be in Houston on Thursday morning at nine. Am which means that. I can't drop Mike off at school like I normally would Can you is that. Is that okay? Does that work for you? So there's that level of talking about it but there's also the level of just talking through what's developing what's coming I mean it's it's a huge part of your life the work that you do especially when it's something important to you in so it is talked about and so I don't know I don't know that I could quantify the amount of time that we spend talking about it but there's definitely discussion about it and we encouragement. That comes from that because if I don't know what's going on Sarah's world I don't know what's causing her stress and strain and I don't know how to make her need in that moment if I'm unaware of aboard meeting that's causing angst or tension or a broken plumbing issue at the building is causing struggle knowing those things allows you to have insight into what's going on in the way that it's affecting your spouse to not have that information I think we put you at a huge put your way behind the power curve knowing what's going on with the the heart and mind of your other spouse. Yeah Yeah I feel like there's a real balance and we swing both directions there. There are times when it'll be like hey I'm just having a hard time turning my brain off in this regard and I sometimes I can sense that I feel like there's a desire to connect and just like move on from the work day and one of us will dislike. Have a hard time flipping that switch off and we'll kind of feel the tension of that a little bit and thankfully. I feel like at our healthiest moments. Were able to kind of like just name and say I'm having a hard time turning off this kind of thing and that are less healthy moments like that causes like you know exte- bickering kind of stuff. So that's that's one end of it but then I also love the fact that because there's a shared investment in the work. Each of us are doing like I'm thinking I was drafting a letter that I felt kind of hung up on earlier this week and I said when we get home this evening can we like have a glass of wine and sit on the porch. And can I like talk through this stuff with you and actually like intentionally bring that home and into our conversation and because of the value of what he could help? Draw out and bring clarity to that situation. And so there's also this like being an active participant in the work as well and it's kind of a kind of a both and And that you able to ask him that. That's such a healthy communication tool. Because if he had had a super stressful day you know he had the freedom to say. My brain is fried. I am done. I want to hear it. But can we do it? And then maybe offer an alternative time as we relaxing one of the rhythms we've developed is like Taco shop. More needs to talk. Oh we can't we can kind of tell when we have been connected in a while and Whether it's the logistical side. Bill was describing of like kids schedules. And what nights. We both have something like after work hours or whatnot But we'll we'll do a rhythm of probably at least once a week going in the morning before we drop mica off her daycare to the coffee shop altogether or the Taco shop. And we'll have breakfast together. And it's just like more than that it signifies this like we need to sit down circle at regroup and just connect to improve your ties. That each other in the eye or has micheals running around steel. That thirty or forty five minutes back to say like we're gonNA just pause and eat breakfast. Yeah and talk about what's going on and so and we've also sort of not as diligently faithfully but at the beginning of this year. We started doing what we call the circle up and we kind of outlined a couple of different Categories of things that we're going to talk about and keep track of houses like sort of born out of the concept of New Year's resolutions cut like what are the things that are important to you over the next year. What are the projects that we're GONNA do around our house necessary? You know things like that. What are the fun things that we want to try and put into the next year and so kind of having a touch point on those things and we keep shared note on our iphones? That is that information and it's sometimes it's super simple stuff. Like get a copy get micheals passport or right very almost businesslike. But it's proactive. This you know we need to find X. Or do this thing. And so it's been really helpful in that regard just to have a rhythm of conversation and things were kind of tracking a little bit but also just keeping in our mind in our conversations. Yeah it felt like the intention of that was helpful of like one of the first things you brought up was like. I WANNA make it out to our ranch every like six weeks this year which we haven't done what you had a status to kind of Oak licensee aspirational. This is a priori in in just.

Qualcomm is at the center of 5G. Were still, almost, there.

"When it comes to rolling out five G.. There are a lot of moving parts at the heart hearts of the stories. It's qualcomm the company makes wireless chips for your phone and develops and licenses other technology in the wireless industry and it's been pushing five Gerard like future of the business hard but there are aspects of the five G. Rollout qualcomm can't control like how long it takes infrastructure to make it into you every neighborhood in the country. The company is also the subject of an F. T. C. investigation over whether it abused its monopoly. Position in four G.. Technology to charge too much for licensing. It actually settled a long-running lawsuit with apple over the same thing. Last April Cristiano Amman is the president of QUALCOMM. And we spoke about all of this at in Las Vegas starting with the promise of five G.. Basically as you bring the computational power of the cloud cloud all of the data that exists in the cloud to any device and one of the things we said in the very beginning of this transition in the five era era will develop side by side with five G.. Just because you're connected to Clo- you have a lot of data you can apply machine learning tool the data five days also technology that I think we've I've been waiting for right. We've been talking about the promise for a long time consumers. Being consumers people are getting impatient. At what point do you think people are getting frustrated. Or they're gonNA. I say this is all hype and no reality. I agree those things. Take time for you to have all of those benefits technology you have to have coverage infrastructure instructor needs to be built. There is no free lunch unless you have covers. You Not GonNa get there. We have a couple of things that would dealing with as an industry. I I if you look at United States one of the number one obstacles when you talk to operators its ability to get new sites up and they are working working with municipalities one at a time China for example have identified one million sites for five G. until the end of two thousand twenty. It also sounds like five day deployment is really important to your long term business success. I mean is there any world I can just hear the open source community city saying like listen you could potentially make some of this available for everybody to build on to accelerate the ecosystem. Well that's what we do if you were an automaker or if you're an industrial company and let's say you're Bausch and you're making manufacturing robots and you want to add five g you have to build. Put An engineering capability of a Samsung or apple. To be able to deal with this and what qualcomm offers is will provide you a license. Essence would provide you a chipset would provide a reference design. We provide your software. You can easily add seller to your robots industrial machine to your car and if you we don't have a model that is horizontal in creates eco-system. You actually prevent all of those other industries to get access to sell it. They have to build a cellular or phone company to be able to do it. And that is why we think five G. we're going to see an expansion of the licensing model not the other the other direction. Yeah this is a little bit of a left turn but we've been doing a lot of coverage on climate and how technology in the tech industry can help us adapt be more. Resilient may maybe maintain emergency communications. How do you see welcomes role in sustainability and resilience and climate conversation overall? Look I I feel I feel. It's a IT'S A. It's an interesting I agree with you. It's I didn't expect that question but The way the way we think about is I at the very basic. We're a company that developed technology for a battery powered device like we don't have the luxury extre- in into technology that we do to assume that we're going to be plugged into wall so we're probably being br building a lot of efficiency. That's no no Secret why we've been so successful in automotive because as an industry like any all of the industry really try to address How they can be more efficient consume laugh? You will consume less electricity and I think as a general. I think that's one of the things that we contribute. The other thing is by making everything connected it. There is a significant increase in productivity. Even when you think I'm trying to provide more of a vision but we always said that that every year that goes by you do more of your work and your phone And I think that's going to change over time with everything connected enact productivity people will be able to Damore to work at home. They won't be able to connect with other people without having to be there and I think there's a lot of in direct benefits of basically providing technology that allow everything to be connected. I do as long as we're in our awkward questions phase WanNa talk about licensing Because parts of that business model of come under scrutiny qualcomm Ben in a long legal battle with the Federal Federal Trade Commission over whether some of those this licensing agreements have reached monopoly status. Do Plan to approach five licensing any differently in light of those disputes. Look there's so much I can tell you about. You know the dispute. I think other than the public statements were made. Were very pleased and was the right decision. You know for us to be granted at stay and I. I think we're waiting for the appeal. But we can tell you is we. We actually have a very vibrant Licensed business more though. That equi enables competition competition. We're very pleased that we have many companies that sign a five t license with qualcomm independent of the dispute in even post the ruling and That validation that you know we have a competitive business model and actually won the provides growth in competition industry. All right last question because you first joined qualcomm. Welcome in Nineteen Ninety five when the company was just ten years old. And you've left income back since then but I just. I wonder what that journey has been like in this entire ecosystem system. It's an. It's an incredible company. Actually I was fortunate enough to join before the first. CDMA network was able to see. Every single transition of wireless ARLEDGE LENDS EIGHTY FIVE THIRTY ONE G two G to three G. to four G. Five G. so I've been to all of those it's really fascinating to see how seller changed the society. It's one of those few opportunities dead and I think all of our employees feel that you can work on something that you actually no that changed the society and It's also interesting to see that we. We may bet that everybody. In each one of those bats knowing exception told us that's That's not gonNA work or there's no need for this and And we'll we'll be able to see as we state with their vision to transformation and I don't WanNa go back all the way to CMA. But I'll tell you an example when when when we first talk about four g you know it was fascinating to see. How Voice Recognition Is Changing the Way We Do Business

"To the price of business. I'm your host Kevin price about you. And your business bright Alan, he's with his ESO of a penny dot com website is the company. I of course, yes. For artificial intelligence. And he is the man on it comes to that level to do you? You know, there's always a lot of interest. Whatever we promote your content and talk about your content on our local media, which you know, every interview we do we promote on there. And I think a lot of the reason why is because what you do is both aspirational, and inspirational and also a practical stuff to people. Why were they are, you know? And and I think you're kind of like the a pioneer in even current mid mid towards democratization. The media what he talked about a lot and making it more accessible. But you know, that's my Lehman spin on what you do. I always get excited having the on going to a little more about what what you guys are all about. And then kind of lay the stage if you will for our topic today. Sure. So my company is founded and focused on cleaning up the muck in the advertising and media industry. So a lot of focus has been put on fraud in advertising in the media, and I will get fraud a little differently than most people. I think because I see it from the inside. And we classify it I guess like you would classify birds. You've got lots of different types of invalid traffic stomach. That's brought some of that's not thought. But we're we're focused on really eliminated. Invalid traffic from the ecosystem. So the ecosystem compunction that we're doing that with the large partners like Google and Verizon and Amazon and looking at the inner core of the network. I kind of joked what people sometimes and say it's like sitting and looking at the matrix all day long. But it really is. Yep. It's just a ton of data flowing through that we're Gani interpreting, and then putting a value on and that kind of comes back to the topic of today, the power of voice. And you think of the power voice in lots of different areas, where I'm thinking of the power voice is an advertising at this point, and the value of a person's voice. So as we start to dock into Alexa, and Google and a lot of the other mechanisms that are allowing our voice to purchase things to enable things to verify passcodes to operate, basically, everything that we do in our daily life will come down to hands-free at some point. So today this year we're starting to look at advertising changing where we have agencies that are taking on clients. And you know, an agency of records are pretty important thing. That tells everybody, you know, who you work with like WalMart has an agency record and Ford has an agency of record. These guys are starting to look at their agencies a little differently. But this past month, the thirtieth of January. An agency and J P Morgan. Chase got together. So they became JT Morgan chases agency of choice for voice that just threw up a bunch of flags for me. When we when we look at voice as a transaction. I think about my voice and being able to use it for. Like, I said pass codes and activation and verifications. So we're moving away from where I think fingerprints were, you know, a few years ago into the capacity of voice, you everything that we don't get your your voices, a fingerprint, and your voice is a unique fingerprint though, because your voice has multiple characteristics to it. They can be attributed, right? Like, if you're if you're happy your voice has a certain tone to it. If you're stressed your voice has a certain tone to it to aligning, not just your voice and your vocal pattern, but the tones inside of your voice to verify whether you're stressed while you're asking for your Bank account to the Oakland is a significant feature that I think we're just starting to see developed at this point the Woolsey activated across everything we do.
