Paul's Religion

"Welcome back to another five minutes in Church history for this episode. I am sitting here with a book in my hand. It is J. Gresham Megan's the origin of Paul's religion. It was first published in nineteen twenty one and that was when it was copyrighted. And this edition. Looks like it's from nineteen twenty five and autographed. It says with warm regards. Day Gresham Megyn October. Six Nine thousand nine hundred twenty seven. He gave it to George Fisher and George Fisher. Meticulously underlined and put in margin notes throughout this whole book. Sometimes you find books with notes and they stop after the first chapter to these notes. Go all the way through. Well that's the particular book but let's talk about this book Paul's religion. This book originated in lectures. In fact. There's a page here at the beginning that says the James Sprint lectures in nineteen eleven Mr James Sprint of Wilmington North Carolina gave to the Trustees of union theological seminary in Virginia. The some of thirty thousand dollars since increased by his generosity to fifty thousand dollars and it goes on to say that the purpose of that money was to set up a lectureship and in nineteen twenty two twenty one the lectures the sprint lectures were given by the Reverend. Dr John Grissom the year before the lectures were given by G Campbell. Morgan from London. The Great London pastor and the year after making the lectures were given by none other than the honorable William Jennings Bryan the nineteen twenty one thousand nine hundred ninety two lectures just three years before Brian would get into that courtroom in Dayton Tennessee. Well let's talk about mentions sprint lectures. He gave it the title the origin of Paul's religion there were actually three views floating around testament scholarship of the origin of Christianity. You see these New Testament scholars. German English turn of the nineteenth into the twentieth century. Made a distinction between the Jesus of the Gospels and the religion of Paul and they saw Jesus as one who talked about behavior ethics and made religion essentially how we live. Paul's the great systematize her and turned all of those systems of behavior into belief codes that you had to believe. And so that was the argument there was the Jesus of the Gospels the religion of Paul. And so where did? Paul's religion come from while German scholar Adolf von Harnack argued. That Paul was not a foundation not building on a foundation of the Gospels but was his own sort of mix off of the gospels. Harnack did not like Paul. He didn't like John Either. He only liked this synoptic gospels and then not even all of them and he certainly didn't like things like the Apostles Creed Harnack said Paul Deified Christ and turned him into somebody that Christ never claimed to be. There was also the German scholar of Rada and he said that Paul founded the Christian religion on certain Jewish elements from the enter testament period. But certainly not from Jesus and then there was another scholar boo set. And he said Oh wasn't founded on Judaism at all. Paul founded his religion on the Greek Pagan religions. Well Megan did not agree with that at all. An in this very scholarly book which was about three hundred pages when it was done. Amazing wanted it to be five hundred pages but the publisher said No. That's too much But in this very scholarly book Mason makes the case that the origin of Paul's religion is from Jesus himself the very end. This is what made us Paulin. Ism was not a philosophy. It was not a set of directions for escape from the misery of the world was not an account of what had always been true on the contrary it was an account of something that had happened and what had happened was the death and resurrection of Jesus. Megan says this he loved me and gave himself for me. There lies the basis of the religion of Paul. There lies the basis of all of Christianity. Well that's Mason on Paul's religion and I'm Steven. Thanks for joining us for five minutes in Church history

"Hello and welcome to the podcast, I'm Tracy v Wilson, and it's November tenth a mob of white supremacists. Overthrew the democratically elected government of Wilmington North Carolina on this day in eighteen ninety eight this incident happened after the end of the post civil war reconstruction to parties in North Carolina had banded together to form a coalition came to be known as fusion politics. These were the Republicans and the populists who were also known as the People's Party both parties knew that individually, they didn't have enough political power or voters to try to unseat the Democrats and the Democrats at that time were mainly made up of wealthy people, many of them former slave owners who had also worked against the civil rights gains, reconstruction and implemented Jim crow segregation. But together, the Republicans and the populist thought they had a chance of getting enough voters to work toward their common goals where they had the same. Ambitions. They could work together to accomplish it and in eighteen ninety six fusion candidates won every statewide election in North Carolina. They completely supplanted the Democrats after the election. The state house included thirty nine populists, fifty four Republicans and twenty Democrats and the state Senate included twenty five populists, eighteen Republicans and seven Democrats. The Democrats obviously were highly upset by this turn of events. And a lot of them were also explicitly racist in their view that black people should not be in office Wilmington, specifically was the state's largest city. It had a majority black population and on March twenty fifth of eighteen ninety seven the city of Wilmington elected, a majority Republican board of aldermen that included three black men. This new board of alderman, then elected Silas, p right? He was a white Republican as the mayor the incumbent Democrats in Wilmington refused to vacate their seats, and they argued this all. All the way up to the supreme court once they had lost. Their Democrats went on a campaign in North Carolina to try to retake political power. This included a campaign of racist disinformation that painted the black population. Specifically black men as violence and dangerous, and they got some help in this from Rebecca Latimer Felton of Georgia who made a widely publicized speech in which she branded black men as rapists and white men as week for failing to defend their women from them. Alex Manley who was the editor of wilmington's black newspaper. The Wilmington daily record published a rebuttal to this that became a talking point among white supremacists. Who demanded that his newspaper be shut down and that he'd be run out of town and response to all of these factors. A group of white business owners and other prominent white citizens turned their focus in Wilmington to election day of eighteen ninety eight and this was a conspiracy to take control of the municipal government. There were multiple people in on this plot, including two sets of ring. Leaders who were known as the secret nine in the group of six one of the ringleaders was named Alfred more what L and he gave a speech the night before the election in which he said to the gathered crowd, quote, you are Anglo Saxons, you are armed and prepared. And you will do your duty be ready at a moment's notice. Go to the polls tomorrow, if you find the negro outvoting, tell him to leave the polls, and if he refuses kill him shoot him down in his tracks. We shall win tomorrow. If we have to do it with guns armed white men patrolled the streets on election day in Wilmington trying to scare black voters away from the polls while encouraging in quotation marks the white voters to get out and vote on November ninth the day after the election white leaders in Wilmington published a white declaration of independence, and they summoned the committee of colored citizens and ordered them to go run Alex Manley out of town, and then on the tenth having not heard back on whether that had been accomplished, they formed an armed. Bob, they burnt down the newspaper office. They ran elected leaders out of town. Thousands of black..

"Villain wilmington. You're not ignoring this area either. That's right. No, we're we're staying put where we need to be. Because to an extent we still don't know what's going to happen with this hurricane, you know, we're watching the weather minute to minute. Just like, I'm sure everybody out there is and you never know when it's gonna make a turn. And if that means that we need to stay put for right now. Just to see what's going to happen. Then that's what we're gonna do. It is quite an army of people. You have out there at the speedway. Yes. No. I was actually just there yesterday. You know, guys, it's almost like an army around for their for their their orders to to head out. And right now, they they are still mustering there and are ready to see what's going to happen over the next couple of days a head out with rations in a little box sandwiches. Oh, yeah. They're well-fed. That's for sure. And the speedway over. There has really been taken care of there are guys along with a lot of the contractors who have come in. So it's really a community effort. And you know, everybody just knows that this is a big deal, and we need to take care of each other. So you guys have meteorologist there and very smart people that know the grid we're at thirteen thousand now have you got a prediction in locally as to how many could lose power before. This is all said and done. No. We don't really have a local prediction of what's going to happen particular in this area. You know, we're just tracking it as much as we can. But no, it's tough to tell what's going to happen over over the coming days. So we're we're watching and me sitting in the media center right now, I'm watching that outage map as as intently as possible to try and and give us updates to customers when they come. All right. So if somebody's lights flicker, and then go dark, they should do what? Well, it's best to if you have your phone number have your phone handy..

"About when we could lead to leave, actually was between the Wilmington club and one of the other couple of Washington nationals of the union association and their interest wasn't necessarily in, you know, wilmington's health, but they didn't wanna lose home day against the Philadelphia club. So let me wind back. You know, as I mentioned earlier, the Philadelphia team was was bad. The they, you know, the Phillies weren't popular either, but they they were drawing better than the than the quickstep. Pardon me? The keystones keystones at slice their admission price by half. There was only twenty five cents to go to the game. So didn't help. The team didn't win any games that was their problem. I believe Philadelphia played something like three hundred ball for most of the year. And so you know they, they were on their knees for a while and when they finally gave up the ghost. There was talk that Wilmington could replace them in the schedule, and and so Wilmington make that decision after several discussions with William Warren white who was in charge of the national team in the union Sochi and you know, Wilmington had their own reasons for making the move for all their sixty s you know they were not drawing well, they had, you know, while up to the teams in bear eastern there minor league Wilmington was at the time they made the jump to the association or magic number was one right? They would have clinched the division with one more or one more loss from the mind and they were. They were tearing up if you will in in the in the interstate league, right? So they eat. Which was renamed the eastern league in eighteen eighty four. Yeah, the Wilmington was fifty one in twelve at the time they made the move. So that's that's better than eight hundred ball. You know, the fans had basically stopped coming out to the games because of the results were foregone conclusion. The eastern league was having the same problems that the union association was having in that. You know there was a little bit. There was a competitive balance that you know getting the interest in pennant race. Some of the teams just just were were financially or you know, well, run operationally and and we're up against one team that was, you know, Runwell operation that was the quickstep they dominated their their league. There was, you know, there was really very little drama in their games throughout. The year they had, you know, had a terrific team. They had a very good manager. Then they were having a lot of success. So it sounds to me like it's a little combination of hubris and flattery and maybe. Flopper. Toyota. Yeah. Yes. Well, there was there was plenty of financial opportunity. You know, the like the one we just kind of operating in the red from the start of the year, and that's because you know, they went out and kind of what players you know, they bought the best players at east out of the interstate association of eighteen eighty three. They simply got a head start on everybody else, and you know, had assembled their team basically by by November while the others were still figuring out who's going to who's going to support him that year. And but the the story goes that the Wilmington owner, John West said that William warned white of the of the union association had agreed that they would not only will. They would pay the team's expenses for road trips if they made the trip and that they would get in some cases, likely fifty percent of the gate receipts at the games that they played in and from West Point of view. If that were true that would kind of pull them out of their financial issues that they were facing and kind of get them through to the end of the year. So that was a, you know, the question is whether that was really ever offered. Although it was widely reported at the time, you know nobody ever disputed it until long after the season and and Lucas said, he'd never heard of, you know, the Wilmington team, and you know. Denied making any of those offers. It's hard to say whether that was actually a thing or just something that John West told the Wilmington people because he was worried that you know the team that he was supporting was going to go bankrupt in the middle of this great season..
