"Don't out of Westport Conn and former FDA commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb good to have you back with us thanks the president just tweeted that cases of numbers and deaths are down across the country what are you saying hello this is N. contains yet that doesn't mean we can't go out and start doing things get back to some semblance of a normal life but we need to do things differently we need to define a new normal so when we get back to work we need to get back to work differently when you look across the country you see hospitalizations going up in many states Florida Georgia Virginia Maryland Minnesota Wisconsin Ohio Arizona you saw hospitalizations coming down about three weeks ago over two week period in the last week just trying to see them take up that should be surprising we expected cases the go up and hospitalizations to bump up as we re open but we need to understand this isn't contained and it's still continuing to spread I mean it might not be able to fully contained until we get to a vaccine or better therapeutics singing you said if people aren't careful they can kind of take a little bit of a breather what does that actually mean what can you do now but you couldn't do a few weeks ago well we we think there is going to be a seasonal effect here we don't know how strong that's going to be meeting when we get into the summer particular July and August we should see cases start to come down and so people can start to go out again I think and start to enjoy some semblance of the lives that they want to enjoy over the course of the summer but we should still be careful we should still try to social distance you know now your circle of friends that you interact with try to go shopping a little less try to group your shopping to maybe one time week or two times a week instead of going out every day practice good hygiene with your hands so all the things that we told people to do it we do that on a broad basis across the whole population it could have a big impact on spread but the virus is likely to continue to circulate we're likely to have this slow burn through the summer and then face renewed risk in the fall that we're going to have bigger outbreaks and potentially epidemics in certain states and cities that's what we need to be focused on right now getting the tools in place to prevent that in the fall you know the president went golfing yesterday in a part of Virginia that's still technically under a stay at home order he's not publicly wearing masks at least the vice president went to it to Georgia this week at a state that they initially objected to having relaxed restrictions too soon do you see this public messaging as dangerous because it's not signaling the caution you are saying is making it look like things are back to normal well I think governors elected leaders should be setting a strong example on what kind of behavior we should engage in because if if we do engage in that terrible behavior for more careful in what we do I think that's actually gonna facilitate a successful re opening getting back to the important things getting back to the economic activity and so if we you know cut down a little bit on the social interaction in the social activity things we don't necessarily need to need to be doing we could focus more and doing more things we should be doing to try to restart the economy and that's where I'd be focused that's what I would be messaging trying to put in place good practices so that we don't see an upswing cases we're going to see a bump in cases and we're seeing it right now I'm the question is how much are we then going to have to re implement some of these mitigation steps I hope not I think that as we get into the summer that's going to be a backstop against spread maybe we'll balance it balance out but then we face a fall where we've had this slow burn of infection through the summer it never really went away was never contained and we face risks as we get back to school get back to college campuses get back to work more fully in the fall so all fifty states are opening partially can they stay open in the fall if there's a resurgence the president says he won't shut the country down again I think what we need to have in the fall we need to have in place is really good data to track where the operates are where the virus is spreading at a local level and we put up a tool today on the American enterprises to website that tries to do that is just one tool I think we need to develop better tools like this I know many people in the White House a working on is Kevin Hassett my friend in the White House has been working trying to get more data feeds in to build a tool that can help identify where the hot spots are early so that we can target measures that we want to close down the whole economy maybe don't even have to close down entire status is now breaking a state but can focus on the county's getting testing to at risk people in at risk communities trying to take local mitigation steps so what you might see as local school districts closed down as there are outbreaks but not entire state that's the goal the goal is to get good information more real time so we can target the intervention so we don't have to do this national shut down or even state wide shut downs but that's going to be dependent upon good screening good taste based interventions you believe going actually target people isolate people who have the infection actually look at a local level and know where their outbreaks whether it's in a local factory or shop warehouse or local community do you agree with the national security adviser that the U. S. will get a vaccine before China does and share it with the whole world as he said I think we well I mean that the Chinese have for vaccines in clinical development right now one is based on a novel platform in an adeno viral vector platform the data came out last week in the lancet on that didn't look overwhelmingly strong it was posited provided some immunity it's probably going to work they have three other vaccines in development based on old technology inactivated virus those vaccines if they do work probably gonna provide lower levels of immunity than the platforms that the U. S. and European to working with so I think we're going to have a better vaccine and I think we're probably going to have it sooner based on where we are in clinical development some of the early progress that we've shown the health and Human Services secretary was with us last weekend and said there would only down from fourteen to about a handful of candidates do you know which vaccines are most promising at this point well the two that are perceived to be the furthest along in terms of where they are in clinical development have shown some preliminary evidence of benefit either one by Oxford that was now partnered with AstraZeneca and into vaccine with me during a with their partner with lines on a manufacturing there's a number of manufacturers that are either if we listen to them or not far behind I'm on the border Fizer they have a vaccine in clinical development right now in clinical trials phase one phase two trials J. and J. has a vaccine Merck has a vaccine Sanofi has a vaccine all looks promising based on public statements they made to some of the preliminary evidence that they put out well we hope to see that information about progress soon Dr Gottlieb thank you very much as always for your analysis thanks a lot we'll be right back with a lot more face the nation stay with us sixty years we went from about a hundred thousand factory workers to probably about seven off in the distance you can see some factors are still humming most of them are just kind of banded the restaurant industry right now is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in America and yet it continues to be the absolute lowest paying employer in the United States fairly anybody's making enough to live you're donating plasma to get by it's literally a slave wage I don't remember growing up like this my mom didn't have to go to food banks it's pretty sad how to put this in perspective about how worried we should we're gonna share the newest numbers and critical information on the outbreak land your DJ is tracking the wind of the restaurant business glad you've been talking to doctors what are they saying to you about their experiences doctors and scientists in a race against time get your corona virus every evening we'll show how close they are racing towards your on the CBS evening news with Norah o'donnell hi Lauren taxing jobs even before I have no idea what I'm walking into I don't know if the customers are carriers service to be out here did you ever think you would find yourselves at the front line we have the opportunity to bring something valuable to the community and that feels good we have to be willing to change policy to recognize it doesn't seem like it's worth the risk I have to do it I can't take care of myself and my family if you had the choice would you stay home devastating flooding has reached catastrophic levels rising sea levels are threatening America's coasts you would have to take that house and put it on stilts country the street this bill with salt water what difference does it make how high you make your house the concentration of the highest rental rates is exactly where the elevation is high this is what the evidence to prove that cottage vacation with three eighteen hundred in five days you have to be scared every single person who stood up and said I am not paying this rent increase received an eviction patience builds this place then you're getting kicked out yes she welcome back to face the nation we.

"We're here with Catherine Connely, and she is the supervisor of this amazing house, but you have to come and see when you come to west Ireland. I'm gonna let you all the details because I think I'm just four or FLA monster, whatever the word is trying to think of the Irish version of that work over grace O'Malley the pirate Queen because actually her family through the years. This was their home. So first of all, let's talk about the significance of Westport. Significance of Westport Westport. And town was the was the two parts. Westport original town was out of the front for Guidon. Here was that was beginning of. Plus, it was known as marks the family, the Brown, the director of the pyre clean. They actually moved the tone seventeen sixty seven to wear a state because you do things like us ducking back in the day. And they moved west baton won the first Plum tones, and so this is quite important on it was beautifully. They abuse designed by architect released in conjunction with Peter Brown secondary. Without while. The pirate Queen and how many castle she had rain, Molly, we are going back to the fifteen hundreds of grace Ahmadi, and she had five custom around this area. And he was an credibility who did things her way always than she ends up. Mine that she she was born of fifteen thirteen just kind of context, and she she died sixteen three and her life was filled with adventure and politics piracy travelers. He just did it on. This was probably run the world more than likely originated from here in the west of our is known as the territory of moon is run by the clown the O'Malley clan. She was a doll of chieftain Ono of the area unto. Yes, she she ruled the roost Russians credibility and so as the pirate Queen. I mean, she really got on ships and she had three. Golly ships were very lifespan scholarships because they're. Three hundred sixty five minutes on EBay around here on her galley-ships were able to maneuver who these items very quickly onto you heard it all the way from Spain to Scotland, and she was well traveled and versed in the in her job piracy that she was not above on her essay was incredible. She was she led two hundred men and her crew people heard her her clans people follow around. It would have been a time of intense, poverty, inter-clan rivalry. And she really was four at all. And she protected her client, and she made sure they were she had a huge huge following loyalty. Because while so then we from from all that rich history of the pirate Queen and her lineage and various children, and how do we rive at the house because the the herbal Mounties would have been there there? And the first Brown came from six in England the first Brown Mary's quest modest quick quick. So this Brown and the amount of her name's more Burke at the stage that they had.
2020 election could be another 1972 for Democrats
"Me. It's fascinating looking back at the nineteen seventies in as someone that has studied history, and you know, about how sometimes there's these political cycles. It's fascinating to see how what happened in nineteen. Seventy two is starting to play out a little bit now as we get close to the the twenty twenty elections. And I was hoping you might be able to explain what happened in seventy two compared to what we're seeing today. Yeah, it's interesting. The the similarities are really Erie. Basically what happened in seventy two is you're coming off an election in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight where the incumbent vice president Hubert, Humphrey ran and lost really a razor close election. And he had won basically by not participating in the primaries. You only piss in one South Dakota. We came in third, but he went a lot of delegates at the convention. So as a result that was really? In. There was really there was there was a lot of incense between between between really inflamed the liberal, but the liberal insurrectionist anti-vietnam people was forty two, gene. Mccarthy in the primaries because the won the primary supported the Johnson ministrations proliferating in Vietnam war got the nomination. So it was a result in the general election. Eugene McCarthy finally get endorsed Hubert Humphrey, the kid by saying essentially, probably the most lukewarm endorsement, you can imagine. Support Hubert Humphrey and asked him I said my and asked my supporters suffer with me. And then. Where? I mean, I don't know. I don't know if you can take an endorsement that's a lot to try to fit on a button. But I'd I'd wear that. But that's funny. And then what happened was so after sixty eight from Richard Nixon Republican beats Humphrey, and then you have the scenario where you McCarthy who was the only really anti Vietnam war candidate really galvanize Westport among them by nineteen seventy-two Nike seventy one seventy two the there's a seismic change in the Democratic Party at moved to the left and the Vietnam war now, even Hubert Humphrey was running again opposed to be Warren called for termination of all troops in south East Asia. So now, gene McCarthy just one of many candidates matter of fact, pretty much majority of candidates were now opposed to be at Phnom results. You've lost that issue in seventy two. He runs again and Hubert Humphrey runs again if he kind of the establishment candidate. I mean, you haven't this time around you have George McGovern though, because he was seen as more galvanized into the anti Vietnam war can't war insurrectionist, so Israel, real key. Who was two hundred one at the beginning when nomination gene McCarthy is an afterthought only win three. Point six percent of the of the vote the popular vote among the democratic primary winner primary contested. And as a result, you have George McGovern winning the nomination then going onto lose miserably in the general election only winning one St. Massachusetts. Phone South Dakota. He and he wanted to why he knew the district Columbia. What's interesting is you see it very similar Somme or today because in two thousand and sixty in sixteen Hillary Clinton won the nomination, despite the fact that a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters felt cheated win a lot of the leak memos. Catchy note that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairman of the Democratic Party had tried to basically basically worked rigged the system for Hillary Clinton results in the general election. Bernie Sanders did come out he did support Hillary Hillary Clinton. But now, you have the scenario we are a lot of Bernie Sanders positions for Medicare for all for example, for a single payer for healthcare for breaking up the corporations breaking up, the big bang and democratic socialism. A lot of those issues are now the mainstream the Democratic Party taxing the rich Camille, the Harris, for example, was moved to the left on MIR. Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts running the scenario. Bernie cares. Not the only liberal alternative to the more. Moderate establishment, the Democratic Party. And it'll be interesting to see if he can. A lot of the people over somebody like Tulsi Gabbard from Hawaii. I'm a lot of others are now running is progressive. No, there really aren't very many New Democrats. Never Bill Clinton ran down a crowd of moderate democrat. There really aren't now we have Mary where everybody's essentially moving to the left and Bernie Sanders is just you know, it's just one choice of many lip pretentious liberal candidate. You only see a couple of very few New Democrats. You have the Beto veto from down from Texas who lost Iraq Iraq, you lost to Ted Cruz. You also have some people are talking about in south bend, the mayor Buddha judge Judy judge. Yup. Yeah. He's also someone that's kind of like fresh blood for them. But other than that, you see a lot of the same names coming up people are like crossing their fingers Joe Biden runs again, which is fascinating too. Because you know, he he sat out, and obviously if he would have ran during this last election that would have really complicated things you throw him into the mix with the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders popularity going on the one I would look to to when I think when he does. And now somebody who if you're looking for somebody who gets votes in red states. Steve Bullock in Montana's, a very interesting candidate because he was just reelected in Montana by four points the same election when Donald Trump won by twenty five twenty point and got about twenty five percent of Trump's supporters. If he's one candidate could make that general election case, perhaps. But of course, right now. He's known as Peter Budaj Jagan, you know, some of the other. Yeah. And big part of this too. Is that it's you're looking at a Donald Trump that's going to run in a lot of times. You are curious. What are the odds that he gets elected? So he's got a lot in his side right now, the fact that he's the sitting president adds a lot of favor to him being reelected. You see historically speaking that seems to help pave things a little bit. But even if you look at some of the polls coming in and you look at some of the people in Vegas when they set the odds, they're still setting him as the by far favourite. And I think that when you have a crowded democrat field in you don't know who's gonna come forward on that side that also hurts the Democrats costs us because they don't have like one person they can rally behind right now. In the case of the Republicans are kinda worked in their favor. Last time you saw Donald Trump rise to the very top in a lot of people were reluctant because they didn't want him to. But he's still didn't regardless. I don't know if there's any democrat that could rise like Donald Trump did during this last election. Yeah, it's interesting because if you're looking for somebody like that. Donald trump. And you're looking for somebody who basically people would not be thinking of right now the one candidate. I'm not sure she can win. But the one candidate. I think you're gonna see. Well, we'll surprise a lot of people. It's healthy gabbert the congresswoman from Hawaii simply because she's running. It's kind of a younger version of Bernie Sanders. This is somebody who was the co-chair who had worked Democratic National Committee lifetime, actually resigned. Her post may end up supporting Bernie Sanders because you're supposed to technically be neutral what she has a lot of other candidates. Don't have EPA episode and non interventionist foreign policy, and that's something that has peeled really across the political spectrum. Remember when Ron Paul ran, for example in two thousand eight and two thousand twelve a lot of liberals who didn't Mike is positions. A lot of other things like position on being a non interventionist and TC only can it in the field that emphasize Matt right now. So I can see her really taking a play for that type for a lot of example, a lot of independent voters. A lot of liberal voters. Who think Bernie Sanders is perhaps a little bit too all a little bit more charismatic? That's the one that I would watch. And as I say. That's deep. Bullock, the governor Montana. If he does run I do think if you look at these polls that show what Democrats want more than anything else. One AD logical. Purity is an eastern buddy who I think can make the case that you look I've gotten elected into red state interested state, I've been relatively progressive governor of expanded Medicaid expanded gun control. I've I've supported campaign finance reform. He can potentially make that case. It's kind of like Bill Clinton in ninety two. He certainly wasn't the favorite of a lot of Democrats who thought that you know, who I think would would grabs in heart wanted somebody like Jerry Brown or Tom Harkin or someone who's more liberal they closed Bill Clinton because they've not a power for twelve years. He he could win votes in the conservative state of Arkansas and Bill Clinton got the nomination that time and tarp emphasizing that I think there could he could potentially move up those the two candidates. I'm kinda watching right now, then you really haven't had much name recognition back and see where they can make an
