Ice Like Stone

"Welcome to stuff to blow your mind. My name is Robert Lamb, and I'm Joe McCormick and we're going to be talking about materials today but this is a really fun materials episode that will shatter like glass in our hands or will it I? Guess. It's a big question mark. Yeah we'RE GONNA be talking a lot about ice, but a lot of exciting stuff about is you're gonNA learn some new things about ice I think and you're also going to think A bit more deeply about what can be done and also. Perhaps cannot or should not be done with ice. So if you've read any of George are Martin's a song of ice and fire. If you've read that saga or if you've viewed the TV adaptation, a game of thrones, you're well acquainted with the wall but to reacquaint everybody, this is a fantasy world that's day stunt sort of a medieval European model, and in the far north, you have this massive three, hundred mile long seven, hundred foot tall wall of ice that we're told has stood there for eight thousand years is a barrier against the peoples and the supernatural horrors of the far north. Yeah. It's basically. HADRIAN's wall except much bigger and made of magic. Yes. Yeah. We're told it was built by brandon the builder with the aid of giants and the magical children of the forest were definitely to understand that there is actual magic in its construction. But also there's this idea that brandon was a master engineer that he's in the vein of these various engineering cultural heroes that you see in various cultures. But of course, the the real up feature that makes this while unique is that it is built out of ice not out of stone but out of frozen water. Yes it is a wall of ice so. Ignoring the magic for a second here. It sounds like a great plan, right? I. Mean Humans have been known to make shelters out of ice glaciers and snow has served as natural barriers to travel. So why wouldn't a it'd be ideal to construct this far northern barrier which is going to be dealing with you know with far northern climate why not build it out of ice good. Question is a block of ice not just as good as stone brick. Yeah. So I, I was looking around about this and Fortunately. There is already a great book out there that dives into this very question it sidled fire ice and physics the science of game of thrones by Rebecca Thompson, PhD A physicist, and author of the popular of Spectra Series of Comic Books About Physics and I should also note that Sean Carroll wrote the Intro Cool. So she first of all, this is just a really fun book. If you if if you're interested in game of thrones and science I encourage you to pick it up I love books like this. One about Dune. I I've been eyeing one about star wars. But she goes through various aspects of the books and the world of West rose in breaks about scientifically Indus-. So in a very engaging humorous but also West rose loving style. So, there's there's one section there where she tackles the wall and she points out that ultimately this question would an ice while work is a lot more complex than you might think. So for starters, there's not just one type of Ice Crystal. There are seventeen types of crystalline is that we know of plus there are three different types of amorphous ice and three hundred. Theoretically she says there might be as many as three hundred different phases of ice. Depending on some of the the research out there

"Was that kind of night for the chicago bears the green bay packers hackers and a dominating defense of showing take out the defending division champions tend to three at soldier field in the n._f._l. One hundred kickoff gough yes the packers with arid. Everyone talking aaron rodgers matt leflore mark more like matt labar matt to flower flower blooming it wasn't it wasn't about aaron rodgers. It was about mike petten and the packers defense ten to the three season opening win just like the the big game last year in week. One the packers break the bears hearts and that's how it all starts dan hands of the around the n._f._l. Podcast joined in the backyard of what is it. What do we call on. West rose were here in the backyard with of course greg rosenthal's my left mark cecil next to me and wes and <hes> lakisha here tara deaker and it's a beautiful night in southern california. We sat outside chirping. Crickets are chirpin ambient sound. That's all of mitch trubisky fans hands. Yes exactly exactly so. Let's get into talking about this game <hes> because listen i don't think we were expecting a shootout greg but no one expected game at this level and we could dissect <hes> how poorly the bears played but give it up for the packers defense which balled out right here lots of people had great. Night's goudie was one of brian to the packers. General manager brings in preston smith who gets three q._b. Hits in this <unk> game including the game finish zig area smith. I think hadn't even bigger impact the brings adrian aimo senate who has the key interception <hes> his draft half picks darnold savage and i think the two safeties they have savage in amos are gonna let mike pet and do a lot of crazy stuff back there. He loves having five six defensive backs. They're not going to dominate like this every week but you could just see aaron rodgers after the game. How happy is that. He's going to have a difference making defense and i think they can be a top seven the eight ten defense all season. I don't think there's a fluke. I mean i i think part of it is the offense you play tonight in chicago. That seems like a work in progress and you know a lot of those players did not operate great in the preseason and airy measured compared to what you were saying during well. No i mean i i would say this. I leave your credit because i think mike patton you. You got some with these games back. When he was cleveland coach in the one good season they had and when he was the jets coach when he started his court kind of feel himself in the second quarter with this defense they got aggressive and they took chances and they were able to against the bears offense it in the second half. I'll never forget this drive where it's one points i and forty then it's second and forty than its third and forty and i you know for all the people who want to tug mitch trubisky into this conversation a franchise quarterback. I've not seen someone with that. Label look has lost consistently on third down as he did tonight. There seemed to be no plan for this offense or he could not pull them out of the trouble. They got into and it's going to be a long week for him. I know logically not to overreact two week. One especially after the quarterback didn't play in the preseason but there is a there's a feeling of collaboration just throwing mitch trubisky by the way so this is the big breaking news the midway through the

"Lebron is such a nice guy bit good family. Schools, donating fighting for causes like he's a little passive aggressive at times, but. Have to be that way. Yeah. But like annoying, but Jordan is like if people hate him at cards, he'll try and kill you. You gotta put more killers that. That's good ending. Right. No. His speech as much as I dislike Jordan, the person his whole speech is hilarious because this is somebody who is achieved everything. And he's going back to second grade. He's like, hey MRs MRs Rogers, remember, when you doubted me that I couldn't write cursive, look at me, now write in cursive checks bitch. They said it just real quick dream Ongeri, how cocky, like not even on a stratosphere. Oh. So every time he drives when he hit that one three in the Houston series. It's like Draymond after he hits one three after missing nineteen. It was Thanos getting Infinity. That is pretty funny. This question here from Brienne. Can you address that half the fans think that brand is all knowing doesn't work like that? And I'm annoyed a lot. That is yes. It's of people have been saying this brand evil because he knew how everything was going to happen. He can't see the future as clearly as you can see the past. That's it's something where stopped where people have their preconceived notions. They're like, oh, well, they're wrong says, brand tell aria what's west of west rose? It's like I if I'm so caught up all that stupid. Yeah, but there's so much. And it's try to break down every detail gets tiresome. So I'm kind of just over everything. Have for you. TV Review: A 'Chernobyl' Deep Dive

"The most incredible thing I've seen on television this year. And really in some time has just concluded I'm talking, of course about Chernobyl the HBO mini series chronicling the devastating nuclear disaster that occurred on April twenty-sixth nineteen Eighty-six near the city of Pripyat in the former Soviet Union leader in the show. I'll be speaking with creator writer. Producer Craig Mazin, who will help me understand how he pulled off this extrordinary feet. But I, I am joined by fellow her noble, admire and ringer executive editor Mallory Ruben. Hello, moe. Hello. Mel you are. You're a voice in the darkness. You were a Soviet minor in the chair noble. Admiration society months ago. I saw screen this show and I was like this is extraordinary. It's incredible. How powerful and beautifully done this very sad. Gripping physically upsetting story is crickets. No one had seen a screener. He's actively making fun of you became a bit. And I certainly feel vindicated not just because you like it. But because a great many people have come to appreciate this show, but tell me a little bit about your journey. You had been living in west rose for quite some time. And then the show came to you and very quickly. You started to consume it. Yeah. I joined a few weeks late Memorial Day weekend, fact. Sorry, sink convert truly a binge then as you know, it's a something of a habit of mine I as you as you said, wrapped up with thrones and I needed to reconnect to the wider culture wanted a little, you know, joy in my life, and I thought. What better way to connect to my fellow man? Rediscovered my own humanity then sure noble. But all jokes aside, you know you'd spoken so highly of it. And there was something appealing to me about the fact that it was a miniseries. It was I was gonna be able to consume it off fairly quickly started watching it. Early in the weekend. So three episodes were out at that point in time. And I watched all three in a row and then was consumed with almost like a surprisingly dangerous, rage that I could not immediately access the final two episodes. And then I watched both of those obviously, when, when they aired, and in the case of the family when you were kind enough to provide me with screener. That's why we're here right now. I had a very similar experience. I watched the first episode like I said months ago with my wife and we were both very taken, but then also, well, we wanted to keep watching it, but we knew that it was it would it would be part of the kind of conversations like oh, but also there's something about any show like this unfold slowly limiting is powerful to no offense to binging in general. I respect that approach to, to culture. But I did appreciate the slow roll out, and we, we sort of parcel deaf ourselves in that way. I think part of the reason he needs to do that is because there's just just a really deep emotional toll that the show wages on its viewers because of its. You know, not just the, the physical terror that you get from it, but just considering the absolute awful scope of what happened in these events. I I'm not sure if you were alive, when winter, the turnover will disaster happened. I was not. So we'll turn Warren later that year September eighty six so April twenty six eighty six as my good friend David Shapiro's birthday, we'll congratulations to David. I hope he wasn't met him for the first time she said, Chernobyl, I presume he was not injure noble when he was Cleveland. Thank goodness. What was your level of awareness of this event? Throughout the course of my life, you know, I think probably similar to what it was for many people who came to this show, which is an awareness that a disaster, it happened. And then little else beyond that, and actually, I started listening to the podcast or the HBO was put out around the show, the official podcast, noble, the buck cast the turnover Petrova podcast and that's that's out there right away as motivation for creating in the first place was this complete void for certainly not everyone, but wide swath of people about what actually happened here and why. And so, in that sense, I think ultimately partially at out week after week instead of all at once is actually very fitting because you as viewer obviously not equating, the experience of the viewer with the experience of somebody on the ground. But it manufacturers that sense of protracted discovery and your desire. Fire is so fierce to understand how what how could this have possibly happen, especially when you realize that it was a safety tests that what's this all? It's just such an incongruous set of initial facts that you're so desperate to learn. And the fact that you can't get to the truth right away. And that, in fact suffocating the truth is really the entire point for so many people is this unbelievably frustrating, but also compelling for pulse of force throughout the rest of the show. You're the eagerness to understand, I think, is the driving force, especially if the first two episodes, which play a lot more sort of like a murder mystery. You know, we're thrust almost immediately into this very quiet setting where this huge disaster happens. There's no really not a lot of preamble before we get to be actual disaster. Right. And then the, the preamble is the suicide of the pro tag. That's right. That's right. Which is also kind of a sleight of hand, as a storytelling device. But there's something so unusual about the way that everything is meted out here. But also kind of it kind of drags you along once things get extremely intense by. Roads, three and four you, you kinda can't turn away, even though we're start to fully understand why some of these things happened until we get to episode five when we realized that we don't actually know why certain things happened in more people had more information than we originally thought it's really kind of a masterful Sherlock Holmes, Ian kind of design for, for telling the story, I think a lot of times with docudrama. You tend to get something that is very earnest. That is very straightforward. It is a very chronological. Now, this is told chronologically, except for that sort of opening sequence you reference, but a lot of information is withheld in the way, it's with held is very powerful. For you. I is this a kind of a format kind of real life story that you like, because when I think of your passions, I think, you know, Harry Potter, of course in game of thrones. And the things that are more fantastical. This is really hard line down the middle in many ways, journalism. Yeah. Well, I've devoted my, my life and career to journalism. That's true. That's a good. It's a good point. It's a good question. I think. When I think about the things that I really love about SCI fi or fantasy stories, which is how I spent so much of my time as a consumer of literature film television. Everything conversations with my friends. Of course. I love the idea of dragons and dire wolves and waving your wand, and making anything that you won't possible. But the thing that I really love about those stories is tapping into something core about human nature. And so any great story can deliver that. And obviously the place that you're going to get that the, the, the most fully formed is something that is literally about confronting humanity and what people are willing to do to each other, and what they're willing to do, when they see what other people are willing to do to each other, and I was riveted every single second of this experience. Like I it's so upsetting and horrifying to watch that it doesn't feel like a normal thing to say, but I can't wait to watch it again. And part of that is because I think. To your point about how much you find out in the finale, actually, how much is sort of held back for this reveal even though it is real world history that we're talking about. And that's sort of like a contrary thing to say. I'm fascinated to then re rewatch it with that in mind. But also because it is just such a pitch perfect case study in some of the themes that I cherish so much. You know the idea of truth in lies. What is heroism, what kind of forms cannot really take when you're talking about storytelling, what is the role and power of image and narrative, and it's pretty hard right now in two thousand nineteen in the United States of America to watch her noble and not think about our current political system and the role of truth in lies in the narratives that unfold around us every day. And so that was interesting to, to simultaneously gain. Newfound understanding of this seismic is stork event and also like with any great story be able to apply it to something in your current life. Is it important that you learn things when you're watching something like this, because everything that you're talking about is the Matic, you know, it's, it's essentially emotional or intellectual. But it's not fact based per se, right? And you know, it's funny, we've been having this conversation in the office, a handful of us about sort of dad non-fiction, you know, the, the canon of handful. You and Kevin Clark and continue. No, there were a few more participants, but shadow to Brian Phillips, with, but there's small group of people that there's a sort of strand of, of culture and history books that are targeted at what we presume to be fifty five year old white guy in pleaded pants, who's just come off the golf course and received his Father's Day gift from his hopeful son or daughter, and inevitably that book is about a general in World War. One man is based on a world historical event more than likely. It's got a certain kind of, you know, pursuit of those some of those themes you're talking about heroism truth in lies, but there's something kind of stayed about it. I think tra- noble in some ways falls into this category. The and in fact, a lot of the series is based on a book, voices of tra- noble. But there's something somehow different about it for you personally. Do you are you the kind of questing for information? It will then bring that to the bar and tell everyone what you learned or is it much more of a televisual emotional experience. I think both and I think that one of the reasons that I really not only enjoyed the show, but thought it was such a grand achievement is because they clearly can be either of those things for you. And that's valid, however you choose to consume. It is valid, you know we we talked about this a bit over the weekend. I was so impressed by the show's handling of the science because I am just in the interest of candor, not a physicist, not a nuclear scientists talked, you ve lied on your resume can barely do math working together for five years. And I little did. I know. And so I was actually a little bit could -cerned about that heading nothing ever felt like a true barrier to entry, but you know you worry about both extremes. I think on the one hand is this going to be so dumbed down for the general viewing public that basically feels like it isn't real that you can't believe in who those characters are in the work that they're supposed to be doing because there's no way that people like that with talk that way about their work on the other extreme. Is it going to be so scientifically precise that it's totally alienating for somebody who for whom that's not there, there for an actor or something that they're comfortable with it all? And I thought that the show's ability to thread, the needle between those two things and allow you to understand with now I'm not implying that we're coming out of this as. Nuclear actually, deuce everyone physicists now. But the basic ability to comprehend what they were talking about what was happening without making it too complex or making it feel like they were condescending. And speaking in speaking, towns, you and I think that's a great trick. There was positioning, some of the other characters on the show in the same seat that the viewer was in, you know, and I think, I think, for example of one of the earlier scenes in the show when are I when I look gossip and Boris our first heading out there on the plane, and we gossip sketching his sketching this out, because Boris's demanding that he explained it to him, and the, the bullets analogy that was so instantly clarifying. Similarly, the trial in the finale, do we understand every single thing that was on all of those placards tiles? No, but they were colour coded, and the, the thing that was unambiguous was that balance was the key, and that wants you. You lost that you lost the ability to control the thing that needed to be controlled, and I just thought that okay I don't need to be coming to this as somebody who is, like inherently obsessed with the science or the facts, but I feel like I can grasp them, and then because I have that beasts comfort, I and then able to shift my focus of the things that I personally care more about the seems the characters the choices that they're making. And I think that if you probably are in the far extreme of carrying about the science. I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who are like fact check on x y and z, and I think that one of the cool things is that the creators of not in any way imply that it is a note for note, faithful rendering of history, you know, that there are for, for example, the Yuan, a character is a composite of all these other scientists, and I think song, right? Saying that in the it was either the first or the second inside the episode feature at that the that we heard that and then it's also. Noted in the run through a fax at the end of the finale. So what about you? Well, I think that there's a brilliant storytelling choice that also happens to be true to history, which is that every single character who is not Lagoda for most of the film is completely ignorant to how any of this works.

No keep going keep on going. But do you think about it from, like, I guess, a logical standpoint someone who is unbiased, and all knowing could kind of be the best person to guess, usher, in this new world, just I don't think sounds wanted. Anyway, now she wanted to know if they would have asked her, she would have said, no. And she just said, I want the north of somebody brought up to you the other lords of west rose there. Why don't they all ask for their independence that seems like the best time to doernen, the iron islands Dorn, especially and the iron islands? Nobody cares about. I think out there. Independence but it was it's like a weird independence where they're not independent, but they think they are. It's like giving your kid brother controller. That's not plugged in your independent Dorn was independent for a hundred years, under tar, Gary and rule. I think that once like once Tyrian was being brought out, and they were again there. Panting everybody. I thought we're going to see John Alyssa thought you're gonna like. Like he was getting free. Because in in that interim John had become king. Yes. Me too. I felt like the three week gap was a little jarring. Yeah. Kind of like did they say three weeks I knew time had passed only because beard, basically said a few weeks, I think and things here and said he had a few weeks. Think about things. But it's like the biggest moment like the cap of song of ice and fire just happened. And now it's just what do we do now? And it just felt weird. I think we should have had more time like this should have been an episode epilogue just one brand. Can't see the future. Right. No. He can. Because he saw drug on flying over kings lending, like he doesn't. It's not like he can go pick a pet time into pass and see it. He can't do that for the future. This flashes just gets flashers. He saw servcies med much blows out the setup to south because him saying what do you think I came back here for was very Blyth accusers. Very smart to. Yeah. That line. Or when he spoke we saw we said, when that aired that we had wished we had seen more of that conversation. At least I said it, and I think that, that's a conversation. We needed to see in order because I didn't fully believe that Tyrian would just suddenly be like brand brand is the one who needs to be king. I mean, I'm sure whatever happened in that conversation. Maybe it sold him. So on wavering loyal to narrow since like the end what was just like jump time and they tell you how like what has been going on, and you see weeks. And it was kinda just too much to drop on us. It's like we could have maybe seen that play out. It's like here we are unsullied or holding Kingsland ABC, John interior in prisoner, and the north is surrounding the gates of king's landing, and why don't they kill John right away to give the Justice? They took him prisoner. And well, they didn't want to War, I guess, but his body was also gone. So he had to been, like, yeah, I killed her. Rogue on clean the crime scene forum, and he ratted on himself, and like grey worm is like dictating terms of who they're going to elect their new king. And he's allowing Tyrian to make the speech after telling you don't get to speak here. Just felt very awkward like arts. Big. Go. Create your new governor totally cool. He's like, pick a king tell us what to do with John and Syrian. All right. It's on the Magna Carta. Let's wrap this up. I'm going to Nuff. But also beyond like, okay, Sansa didn't even like she was like, I'm going to become independent rather than voting for my brother to become king. "Both might act season. Seven they were okay together. Cheering when they were hooking up they, but they had just met, like they really have been together that long. Like literally just there together, I think it was more the fact that I accept that they both. Except that they both saw each other. And we're like that's a fucking good person. I'm gonna fight for them. Yeah. It was hard for me to accept the conflict after that, though, he says he loved her, you know, just like Tyrians I loved her with all my heart also by that's another. That's another thing that I don't get about this characterization of Danny, because why would Danny be attracted to such a good in good hearted person, right? She was so crazy in so evil. Like everybody's painting her to be. She needs another calls Rogo that's her. That's her speed. Or even somebody more ruthless in, you know, like any any of these other cares, what a hearing. A hearing him marine, she'll have to guard marine mount. All right. So we get to the okay, so. So they killed judge John kills Danny boom cut to black and we do get a title onto week jump maybe. Yes, you weeks and that was kind of anticipation time Jim. But I thought it would have been great if at times it happened with Danny on the throne still. And then you see what happens with her room. She's dead moving on. John and Terry. Still imprisoned their beards are growing long and there's another meeting, they had in season, seven when they brought him the white walkers with the council small council of west rose, and again, tearing and IMP a land Stor a prisoner. Just convinces everyone, listen eight seasons. They've been trying to figure out who's gonna get the throne. They figure it out and five fucking minutes. Oh, yeah. Each other warring over these things there, the last of the surviving people. They have all the power and the tunes like we're not gonna have. Let's figure out who's gonna be the king, and everybody's like all right. You pick. I do. Tully standing up and then sit down now. I agree. I mean. Tyrian does give speech. He's craving that a good speech. I'm like, by the end of that. I'm going brand the broken. That's about it. I'm like, why do they even bring Tyrian out? What what's reason does? He have to be out there to tell them who to became which became, but, but why what is he, he was terrible hand of the king handed Queen. He was instrumental in this happening. He he quits. He betrayed his Queen has the Lancasters are dead. Why bring him back out? Yeah. He made one good decision in two seasons. Right. Everything's done back and save this sister, tried to save his worked. I mean the only the only reason that they brought him back out. So that brand can go, he's made a lifetime mistakes. "They're talking about John, and what makes him an ideal ruler. He does want it. Have you considered the best warm may be the one who doesn't wanna rule there says to Tyrian about John? Well, who else does it want brand? He just said it now obvious issues with him. Having learned nnounced not only his stake to award ship, but basically his humanity. So how they would potentially bridge that divide into episodes candidly have no idea, but it seems like that exchange about brand not wanting an episode where the idea of someone who doesn't want being an ideal ruler comes up so often is deliberate. You know, the thing that I keep thinking of is this seems like the death of breaking the wheel. Yes. Because if the thing that's important about brand one of the things is that he understands history better than anyone. The history of west rose is not great Danny's entire mission is let's escape that history. Let's break with the past. And let's do something different from tyrants Sabet. To have brand it's vote for status quo. Sensually, well, I guess it away against to combat that would be saying we're going to use all those lessons. We're going to tap into that memory to avoid those mistakes and try to build something better. But I'm glad you mentioned breaking the wheel. Because I think that that is one of the ways that the show has to sell Danny he'll turn here, which is she's actually forgotten about breaking the wheel. And that's part of the problem. That was part of the reason that she seemed like the worthy choice for so long. And now it's just about her precious. You know, the iron grown is her ring of power, and she's pursuing it above all else. So inserts he says keep the gates open. If she wants to take the castle, she'll after murder thousands of innocent people. I if feels like that's exactly where this is heading especially after what happened to Masan day and Masan days endorsement via the word your cars. And also if you factor in everything that Emilia Clarke has said about how she feels about the end of the show. So on the one hand this has in many ways been set up for quite some time. Many many emblematic lines are moments. You could point to something like Danny saying marine? They can live in my new world or they can die in their old one her saying when Barrington push for mercy, I will answer injustice with Justice her saying car through my dragons, growing, we'll take back stolen from destroy those wrong. We will lay waste armies burned cities to the ground all mass burnings plenty of other examples on ago, but is there time now to sell it as her giving into her worst impulses in losing sight of those higher pursuits in other words, becoming the tyrant that she says she's trying to rid the world of without just making her basically, the hysterical woman who snapped. Yeah. I mean, I think that's a very real danger with the way the pace is unfolding and with just the amount of runway. We have it feels very abrupt even though you have to acknowledge it. It's been set up the whole time, it feels quite abrupt. Yeah, I'm okay. With certainly with John Danny rift and with Dani dying, and Danny as a character who ultimately people did not trust with power. I'm actually okay with that. Because of all the setup, but to a point you made earlier, I don't want it to feel like she's evil or villain. I wanted to be that tragedy. I agree. And I I'm really worried about that kind of like misogynistic lens framing because you know, to be honest, great. She storms the red keep and they slaughter everybody. And they melts the castle. She's not doing anything that any other king of west rose has not done Rayo all did it. But somehow it's a problem now in Danny does it because she said she wouldn't end because they're holding her against her father standard as the mad. And I think that's where I'm just like come on like, we're holding her literally to an impossible standard at this point or her advisors. Certainly are if she storms at city and innocent sti- what Lord of west rose, what king of western has not done the same thing, which one of them. None. I would not be surprised if she has stashes of wildfire waiting in the red keep so that when Danny unleashes a burst of Dragonfly and the whole thing blows up that reputat. Is secured for I think the tragedy is that all Danny is wanted ever was to return home to find family to be this person who could.

Joining me in studio today, Jason Moser in the house. Thanks for being here. Alot we're going to dip into the full mailbag. Let's start with the Berkshire Hathaway meeting which always gives us a couple of headlines coming out of the meeting have you ever been? I've never made. I have. Yeah. It went. I think he was just once I win in. So of course, when you go with us. I mean, you get to go you have the press badge, and you sit up on the top and you get spoiled with the lunch and everything's easy in. So that was like no way, I'm topping that experience ever. So there's no way I'm going all the way out the Omaha just a wait in line to hear some guy say something I heard him say five years ago. You know, what else you can follow it on Twitter now, it's so robust and in. It's like you're there. I was thinking it's just like I don't watch a lot of baseball anymore. I love the Red Sox. But man, I tell you follow the Red Sox on Twitter, you I mean, they are that that's a. A great baseball Twitter presence right there. So you can do so much. Also, I think Yahoo finance has done. The livestream for people who are looking and watch the video I've talked to other analysts around here. It's like are you going out to along? Like, no, I'm just getting up and watching it in my pajamas really a lot of clips are still floating out there. So it's it's easy go over and over and over again. So let's get to a couple of headlines, and I up his craft Hines which. You know, it's it's impossible to read Warren Buffett's mind. But I'm wondering to what extent if any he's regretting the craft how the participation in the craft highs because Kraft Heinz came out and said that they're going to restate their earnings for twenty sixteen and for 2017 due to misconduct on the part of some employees. They say it's not going to be material. And I'm just going to go ahead. And grant them the benefit of the doubt and say, okay, it's not material. And if you look at the stock it's not falling through the floor. So clearly smarter more invested people literally more invested people than me are taking them at their word. Well, it's not falling through the floor any more. I mean like it's been an awful year date. It's basically been cut in half of horrible, twelve months and has really been a horrible existence ever since the merger in two thousand fifteen. So I mean at some point or another that floor kind of set itself, but you know, I started thinking about this with buffet. And so there was this one point like I dunno years ago where my wife kind of basically called me out on. It's you know, sometimes you as married couples. Do you talk with each other? And sometimes you just sort of the words are just kind of going in one ear and out the other. And and so whenever that would happen with me. And I would say something like, oh how about that? Eventually my wife figured out that how about that meant. Oh, I'm not listening. And so she called me on it. And I so now I can't do that anymore in with buffet. It's starting to feel like whenever he's like, you know, we're just going to give him the benefit of the doubt. It's kind of like he's just those words going in one you're out the because he does the same thing with with Wells Fargo, essentially, he's doing it with craft Hines. He kinda tends to do that. And that's fine. He's got billions doesn't really matter at the end of the day. But I do wonder how much this kind of grinds his gears because it has been obviously an awful existence since the merger. It is a very buffet style investment. I understand his perspective when he was asked about the long term value this company in regard to the brands that's kind of what he fell back on the brands. I don't know that I necessarily. We believe that going forward though, I think those brands are in in a bit of a bind. Red flags. Yes. And having to restate things, perhaps it's nice to see they're actually get out getting out in front of this kind of resolving and all, you know, I I don't know that I'm looking at this as an investment I want to have anything to do with anyway. So let's move away from Kraft Heinz for a second. When you see a company that you own shares of come out and say, hey, we blew the math. We have to go back and restrain like, I is it on a case by case basis because I was I was looking at this and sort of thinking through my own holdings and thinking to myself, you know, what depending on which company I own if they came out and said, oh, we're going to restate two years worth of earnings depending on which stock it is. I'm either rolling with it and saying, okay, you blew it. But it was lower level employees, and you're on topic. Whereas other stocks, I own I would think boy, I don't know this. This is one more check against you. Yeah. I mean, I think it is a case by case basis, but I will say. And we talk about these companies a lot on this show. It feels like for a while. It was Bank of America than it was Wells Fargo. So there are companies that get out there and are really in the spotlight, and they kick get out of their own way. Facebook is another one. I mean, it seems like every week we could just have that one segment of the show where it's like, you know, this week in Facebook screwing up again in so eventually privacy. Right. Eventually you get a little bit tired of it. Right. And so then you have to ask yourself is this really accompany worth owning? I in. I I think that is again, it's a case by case thing when I look at something like a craft Hines. I mean, it just don't see any kind of a competitive advantage there with the business to begin with. So this certainly would not be one of just sort of gloss over. I think it'd be one more reason to probably not want to own a so for this next story that comes out of the annual meeting it's worth remembering that? Last month. Yulon mosque said on Tesla's earnings call that tesla was going to be launching its own insurance product in the month of may and not surprisingly Warren Buffett was asked about that annual meeting and said point blank, it's not an easy business. And you know, there's some people online today said boy, he really called musk out there. I, you know, I don't know that I want to ascribe that to buffet. But she clicked, you know, the most generous interpretation of what Buffett said regarding tesla getting into the insurance business is good luck. But he did go out of his way to say. I'm not worried about them. I'm I'm more, you know, because Berkshire Hathaway owns Geico. I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about progressive. Yeah. Well, I mean, listen, given given EON Musk's track record of behavior. I mean is this really someone you want to be getting your peace of mind from seriously? Like, I mean, you wanna mind sure. From that guy. I don't think so. And I mean, I'm a big fan of you must listen very clear. I support what he's doing. I love is big picture thinking, I'm rooting for the I there are points in time where I feel like maybe he's just you know, that's kind of silly candy. I think that was probably pretty silly. And apparently that candy still coming out insurance pales insurance is hard. That's why we like great reputable insurers that requires a lot of capital. There are a lot of regulations in. It's not easy. I mean, it was it was interesting. I thought when when he was asked about this potential insurance product in he noted that they would be writing these policies based on data. I mean, we'll dumb that's all like all good insurance companies right there policies based on data. Like, there's an entire industry that you know, the actuaries to get out there and figure this risk out based on data. So I mean, I think that when you look at what musk is trying to do with tesla with spa. Sex solar city somewhere in there as well. Yeah. I mean, I is is insurance for this Jews really worth the squeeze. I don't think it is. I love the back and forth. I think you've got yesterday versus tomorrow and in buffet in musk and two guys. I really appreciate in in honestly love as an investor. But there's no question that insurance is a very difficult business to run. I'd have to believe if they were going to be writing insurance product, it would be with another partner that actually dozen sure. And then I would imagine it would be basically just for people who have a tesla. Like if you don't have a tesla. I don't know why you would get insurance from them. But I mean, hey, he says a lot of stuff what about dating app? I feel like you know, owning a tesla. That's a that's a bar to clear socially. And it was like start matching people up. Tesla owners. I think I don't know. I mean. Yeah. And instead of going to be helpful sure instead of swiping left and swiping, right? Like musk. I'm sure would add a dimension. Right. Instead of that. It'd be like swipe diagonally or swipe four D or something of that nature. He's always throwing a bit of a bit of a forward-looking twist on things so Starbucks got a surprising promotional boost this morning Twitter was all a buzz about Sunday night's game of thrones episode that is to be expected because it's the final season of game of thrones. What was not expected is the fact that apparently a Cup of Starbucks Coffee made its way into the episode of game of thrones people were posting video of this and screen caps of this a half to believe there's a production assistant who is in the process of getting fired today for leaving a Cup of Starbucks Coffee on their unless I don't watch game of thrones. Maybe there was a story line about the first Starbucks opening in west rose. I don't know. But but. That's amazing. Because you hear the phrase all the time you can't buy that kind of publicity. And I would say the majority of time someone says you can't buy that kind of publicity if you step back and look at a given situation. No, you really can this is a situation where really Starbucks couldn't have bought this. I yeah, I feel like sometimes there are situations where things like this. Are there not accidents there planned out, but they are made to look like accidents? Now, I'm not I I have HBO. So you think this claimed? Well, no. And that's what I'm saying. I don't think it actually was. I mean thinks in some cases these types of things are it does it does feel like this was genuinely just someone missed this. Now, I don't watch game of thrones. Which is fascinating because I have HBO. And I and I love it for whatever reason just never got into game with bronze. But it strikes me. That of the rabid fan bases out there. Starbucks and game of thrones are two very rabid fan bases to tie these two together. I mean, there is there is some serendipity here that I think is going to work out for both entities. I I don't think there is a downside for either. Now, maybe there is a production assistant out there who's who's out of a job today. I don't know who we just we won't even go there. But I I don't think there's really any downside to something like this happening not for Starbucks product placement has been around for decades. And if they had gone. The idea to go to the producers of gaming throws me. Like, here's ten million dollars. We just want to scar. And of course, the producers would be like, no that doesn't make any sense. But but I mean now all of a sudden, we're thinking, okay. Is there some type of is is there some type of of time-warp here in game of thrones that didn't exist it possibly now. Does is this how they continue to tell that game of thrones story after the end of this. He's who knows. I mean, we as the viewer or potential viewer. And I tell you like I said, I don't watch it. But now I'm feeling like I may want to start because who knows what could develop from this. But I have to believe they're gonna milk it for all. "I definitely was surprised that all of those like it did seem like, okay, it's amazing that all these people made it through the battle. It seemed unlikely. But I'm also I just I don't know. I didn't feel it questioning it at the time. What did you think? I know there was chatter around that moment Tyrian had with Santa and people were wondering if he would kind of re think his allegiance, I see it as oh, do you seek shipping or major respect Nelson. Does mutual respect. I mean, there was definitely mutual respect. But I meant like post battle winter fell. If you know he and Danny have been on the rocks. So an I don't know, and he clearly has much respect for Santa. So I don't know like how lots going to play out like supporting. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And just north brother. I mean, it's it's weird. Because like again, John is continuous auto wannabe kick off a wannabe leader. And everyone's like your later. I don't wanna be this. And now again, they're like you're gone to tour, Gary and he's like. Just put that on hold. I don't know. I feel like my God is like dude he's going to step aside. He doesn't give a shit about the iron throne. I'm just I would be shocked if they killed dead at the end of the season because I feel like she's a one character that I like assumed to be constant in the whole series. Yeah. I would be shocked to when I feel like her. Her arc confuses me because it is like all ascendant like it's all her learning to be a Queen and to be a ruler. But when it comes to her taking her place on the throne of west rose, I feel this in eight resentment where I'm like, yes. This is your birthright in a way, but this isn't your country. You didn't grow up here. And you don't understand these people. So for me like Danny on the throne of west rose at the end is unrealistic is an unrealistic good ending in it that I would not expect from the series. You know, because it it it feels not unearned because she's worked really really fucking hard for it. But it feels like something that would not be a celebratory moment. You know for the people. It's true. I mean, if you think about how she handled the tar Leigh's too. I mean, yes, they they wouldn't bow to her. I mean, I get it. But like, what's? Yeah. Like, how can I mean? I guess this is how all few. Fil warfare. Like, how can you fuck in March in there and be like PS, I'm the Queen now and expect people to be happy about that. Like, yeah. That's a great thing about the Tyrol is that they earned their trust in people. They earned all of their power through manipulation and lying, but they fucking her. And today, we're also very rich. They're also money. Yes. Also a few. I guess okay. But Misao, yes. Still alive? Yes. Still I think I'm being, but if we have Tyrian on the rocks and forget the most crushing Giora surge for dying. I feel like I was more emotionally distraught. That I was in the entirety of endgame. Why has very very distraught. When Jordan it was last words, he just yeah. And like sometimes it's just how it is that you don't always get like a parting word, and that's it and like the spent such an extended period of time focusing on her face and her crying and her grieving that it was so. Hard to not feel that because he's been with her since the beginning. Yeah. Also shout out to a million Clark the very expressive face calling. That's good. She sunny. She's so good. The I'm in a very different point with Giora because I haven't watched the last three seasons of this show. So I have a different opinion, but I- validate you what is your do? You just not hit the last thing that I saw him in the books was just really shitty. And I'm out right now. Oh, yeah. He I mean. Yeah. The books are quite different. He's he's kind of Dickel. Sometimes. Oh, oh, also, the leeann more Mancini. Oh my God. I was shocked. I was re I've been rewatching some of season six and seven. And so actually we watched last night the episode of season six where she's I introduced. She's like, my mom was no great beauty. And I'm like God.

"HP as clearly the winner in the battle for winter fells game of thrones fans lined up for the series third episode, which pitted the night king and his undid against the team at west rose. There are some key moments for fans of the series among them the return of the red woman Monday night's episode. Mel Sandra makes a return. Remember, she is a believer in the Lord of the light not a fan of the night king. So she helps set off crucial fires for the protection of west rose. But also reminds RAF something that she said to her in a previous episode

"Yet definitely brought together a lot of our favorite characters. You know, maybe a not so good way. It's maybe some of them will not be with us much longer. But I think overall just having that kind of maybe goodbye to some of our favorites. Adults prequel one of my favorite episodes of game of thrones ever this week. It really was now stews right? It was kind of the second set of episode in a row and only been one long episode at the quality of this one to start the season. I think it would have been higher impact. But the writing how everything has come together. This story has been about characters in different places far away where now all together on what they think is their last night, basically living, so well, so I thought this was lost in the show like five hundred other people this isn't revelatory. But I do think there's a chance that everyone in the crypt is going to die, and everyone that's outside is going to live. Can I can I pose a theory? My wife kind of red slash came up with please you guys tell me if you would like to think it's possible. The more thought about it the more. I was arguing my brother today the more. I I'd like it to happen. And that is this your the night king. You're really smart you're trying to take over west rose. You have a show where they keep bringing up all of the books that Sam well stolen from old town, and you got Braun for no reason going north. What are the reasons why would the night king the only place in all of west rose prepared to stop him, which is winner fell with dragging glass? I think what's going to happen is that he's actually fly. This is a decoy. He's flying around winter fell. Bronze going to see him fly over narrative plot point he's going to go to the to king's landing. He's going to raise all of the the only have this all the dead people that make up the wall surge he's gonna throw so from a window. Just like Toma did. Because the thing in the books with mother, it's in the other order mother, a son he's gonna take over all of west row smarts to old town burned to the ground and the actual battle winner fells in the season finale. Oh, wow. Really? So this is just a total fake out that the battle doesn't actually come there waiting and what they're just looking at the NFL episode of just white walkers that are complete distraction. I.

"So at the reins and his name is how remove final touched on the fact that drogue gun looking a little bit jealous of John. And Danny from the last episode, and he kind of points out. He said, I don't Joel gone knows. I don't think let me read this again. I feel like Joel on knows as in. Joel knows that John is Gary Mikey senses. It and he's not jealous. I don't remember them ever. Letting anyone get close enough to touch them. They must sense who Jay is. So that I mean, they do they do kind of lewd two interviews that date that Dany Danny has a special connection with the dragons, some maybe they sense that John is one of the smell that targe area blood, and John right that fire going through. There wien. So you get good. I mean that makes sense. And then have one more question. It is from at 'em toes. Seconded? His name is Mon Masirah Malla. And he asked us. It's Jimmy Lancaster Zora. By now, just to give you guys what backstories so as a fly is this this character. That's a almost gonna prophecy. So as far as I was this great man, he brought a Hiba the chosen one from from the God, we're Loehr and so in order for him to defeat the white walkers or the long night, he had to forged light Brinker, which is the sword that STAN is supposedly had but in order for him to create light Brinker. He had to sacrifice so had to sacrifice his love. So he put light bringer through her heart, and she died, and then he ended up defeating the white walkers. And he's he's his prophecy is more Esso's, but he's kind of the same character as the prince that was promised they have very similar storyline. So they're probably one in the same. It's just that as ores is from the region of Esso's. Whereas the Princess that was promises from west rose. But a lot of people have noted that they feel that jhad is going to kill Danny. I guess too. Maybe infused her blood with long claws like the fire from her blooding and kill you know, the Nike ad on now. But I don't think that Jamie is or as I if anyone would be that character it or that prophecy fulfill it will be John to answer your question. So. Think about that that one they're kind of the if that does happen, but we'll see I will rise. I will right. So. Yeah. "Well, you know, the people in west coast, that's the one of the one of the main lands and game of thrones. The kingdom of west rose. They really shouldn't be worrying about the about the night king. They should he's he's been arrested. What he's been arrested in Trondheim. Norway has he? Yeah. Norwegian police have done west rose, a huge favor. They caught an arrest of the notorious night king Sunday night just before the premiere of the final season. I don't think we have the picture because I just found this story but photos and mug shots posted to Facebook. By Trump time police show the night king safely in custody. The post has more than four thousand seven hundred shares of time of this writing according to the post the leader of the white walkers was arrested for animal cruelty and involvement in the destruction of a wet of a wall. But of course of all the Brown people on Esso's here come the arguing, and we're essentially just aeriens because have white hair literally like the whitest white people possible. Like when you when you listen to this though, it just makes you look at the creator, and you're just like with about. I just feel like colle- is essentially who George are Martin would have liked to fuck. And so that's what made her be like. It's his fantasy. So we're just in his fantasy in the book scenario is supposed to be thirteen in the show. She's supposed to be fifteen and in the first season. Yes, she's married off to college Rogo who is not fifteen so. Some a lot. You gotta just let it go. You gotta just let it they don't. They don't say that outwardly. But it's definitely like, okay. This is this is not. I mean, she's just she's so worldly that you you don't even consider that she could be a kid, but I think that they did on purpose as well. Long story short. These are the houses of west rose that are basically the main houses that people talk about there's one house in particular that people don't talk about a lot. But that is actually featured quite a bit in the history of west rose. And when you read fire and blood the history of the charge aeriens three hundred years of west rose. This is a book that Georgia are Martin put out that basically starts you at one eight on the conqueror took over west rose. And it runs you down all up until we get to Robert Barath, Ian, conquering the tar garrisons because basically ruled west rose for three hundred years until Robert Barath Theun who was married to sir c. He's the one in the season one who is really good with ED's start, really cool. It was the king at stark down. He is who you know, basically Joffrey and Tom Marcella are said to be breath. "Doesn't feel like. Doesn't feel like she'd come back from this. Maybe she'll be like an finale gonna throw thrown room celebration type of scene. I really think like the thing that nobody is thinking about here is that the white walkers don't have to cross water. The gotta fucking dragon true. Fly outs. Right. Right. Right. They don't know. So they can't be blamed for not thinking about it. But the iron islands aren't safe. That's interesting. Because there's I wanna talk about. I wrote this these these books in the off season about the religions and cultures of west rose. And in my research, I found in the world of ice and fire. There's his Maistre who makes us observation that we're woods never grew on the iron islands because they need a certain quality of soil and too poor for them to take purchase. And consequently, there's no evidence that children to forest ever journeying to iron islands to there's evidence of this weird kind of ancient precursor civilization that I talked a little bit about the books. But I was thinking that this is interesting because Yar actually probably has a right of it without the dragon. I wonder if you know like like since the we know that these things are essentially some kind of runaway weapon from the children of the forest it's entirely possible that the white walkers couldn't get over to iron islands because they make sense at the same. Magic to kind of created them would bind them kind of more of west. West rose now because the question of what if you'd never defeated the night the night king or the white walkers and able to take over off west rose and the entire globe freezes. And then they like is this a west rose progress owes problem, right? I don't know that you can definitively say either way except for there are a lot of like Zora high type prophecies from Esso's.

Start your journey towards data driven decision. Making it snowflake dot com slash NPR. Bankruptcy for farms in the mid west rose sharply last year. And it's not just one thing that is pushing farmers over the edge. Esther Hoenig of harvest public media reports that many of those farmers have been hit by a trifecta of trade disputes, continuing low crop prices and now extensive flooding. Corn is pouring into a semi trailer. Ben Steffens farm in southeast Nebraska. Corn out, and we will call it to atchison Kansas. That's about eighty miles one way staffing calls this past winter. Brutal on this frigid day in March most farmers couldn't clear their snow packed roads. He could which meant he got a bit more money for his corn. We're in a situation where we're we're counting nickels and pennies on every transaction and we're trying to capture every every penny weekend over the last few years. Farm income has dropped by half since high point in two thousand thirteen when you spent five years of your life pouring, your energy into a business and you're worse off today than five years ago. It feels like a crisis if dismal situation for many of America's commodity farmers, and it sparked concern that the agony tree may be on the cusp of a major downturn like in the nineteen eighties. When scores of farms went out of business. One indicator could be the number of chapter twelve filings, a special bankruptcy. Code for family farms last year. It reached nearly five hundred that I'm looking at right here suggested. Actually, we had higher. Bankruptcy rates in twenty ten in twenty eleven David Whitmore is an economist with the website agricultural economic insights. He says well overall, the farm bankruptcy rates look relatively normal to get the whole story. You have to look at all the numbers bureau wanted took into my phone with the dash the metrics that we all talk about our trade being the wrong way, metrics lake farm income would says trade disputes have hurt markets and slashed exports of major crops like soybeans and Nathan Kauffman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City says that means excess grain is piling up. And it's pulling prices down to at or below the break, even Mark whatever may or may not happen with trade policy. I think those supplies are likely to continue to weigh on commodity prices for this receivable future. Kaufman is watching to see if this drags down. Other key financial indicators like loan repayment rates. Land values at the moment. He says, it doesn't look great. But it certainly has not gone to the point where I think that that we would call it. The kind of crisis that we saw playing out in the nineteen eighties. But tell that to the farmers in states like Nebraska and Iowa were recent floods killed livestock and drowned hundreds of millions of dollars worth of crops. Nebraska farmer. Ben Stephan says he dodged the worst of it. But if prices and trade continued to slump he along with many others may have to file for chapter twelve that's because this special bankruptcy code helps. Farmers resettled, dead and stay in business. And if that happens, lawmakers won't be ready or more going to push ahead with reform chapter twelve bankruptcy because we need to update that law. I was Senator Chuck Grassley says he wants to make sure more farmers can qualify for chapter twelve bankruptcy to do that. He's proposing more than doubling the amount of debt. They're allowed to take on from around four million dollars to about ten million. For NPR news. I'm Esther Hoenig. "Search of six iron throne replicas, you know, the ultimate symbol of power in the fictional kingdom of west rose last week the official game of thrones Twitter account posted the hashtag for the throne along with a cryptic twelve. Second video. For the throne on the quest for the six images of thrones were posted and fans around the world began the search one of those people a twenty five year old gamer and project manager from Sweden. So my name is Josephine Velinov from your meal Sweden at first Josephine was skeptical. I'm sure they're never gonna put one even remotely close to me, not even in our country. Next to mine, and of course, starting speed them. But when she looked at one of the images closely, it gave her hope when I saw the snow, wait a minute. This may be actually can be Sweden. And when I read the first clue I was sure right away that it wasn't Sweden since the clue for it said crown for each of the three stacks three crowns or part of the Swedish national emblem within an hour of the clue being posted Josephine set off on her quest to find the throne. She wrangled her boyfriend through on warm clothes, and they headed north no time to even Pakistan like should I bring sandwiches or not? And we would like, no, let's go. So they headed north, but we're to Josephine had only an image to look at. But one thing gave her an idea a clear shot of the Northern Lights, and they were bright. This was their clue they knew the further north you go the brighter. The light gets I drove eight hours. Yep. You heard right. Eight hours north. So when we went. On the morning. We're just started hiking up the mountain like six iding across the mountain to make sure that the terrain was sir was a match. Finally, they caught a glimpse from the distance. She could see the spikes of the throne. It was like a surreal feeling 'cause we were never sure that we were actually gonna find thrown or if we were in the right location, or if we were going to have to search or one hour, eight hours. And seeing it if made us, oh, so happy like super surreal weird feeling like seeing the throne standing there in the snow like, no, no, no. This is wrong. This is supposed to be like in the show. It's not supposed to be in the snow. But there was one more surprise waiting an actual man dressed as a character from the show. A man of the night watch the guards of the realm. The protectors of the living. You get my point. He asked us, why are you on this quest? And we told him that we were on this quest to find the throne. So here he was in full like costumes all and he was like in the game of thrones you either win or die. And today, you have one Josephine was triumphant hidden more than one hundred and fifty miles north of the Arctic circle, she found it and the man gave her a special gift he approached me and put the crown on my head. She was crowned Queen of the north the one true Queen at least for that day. And she got to keep that crown. Congratulations. We pledge fealty..
