Susan SurfTone: Female Competition in The FBI, and Criminal Psychology

"I I think we need to start with the FBI. Special Agent in the eighties. Yeah. That's a pretty male dominated field initially for that. Yes. It was convene many women back then or there. That many where I think I, think women had been in for eight years before I joined. So what was lacking was women in the supervisory roles who they hadn't made it up that high hip. So those of us that were there were you know bottom of the Ron Did the women's stick together women did women do Basically. No. Women aren't like men and women don't help each other usually. Oh. That's sad to hear it is but it's the truth than I. Always tell the truth they'll please do. So every woman for themselves, I wouldn't say it's an all the time general rule but most women that do want to get ahead a lot of them feel that they're better off putting their, they're investing their time with the men that have power. And they don't help other women and I have a theory. See My father played baseball father was a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers Minor League and I grew up in a very sports oriented household were learned to play on teams and be kind of a team player and understand that a team has to work together and I learned that my ban to. And women don't learn that because my women Meyer didn't plant sports teams, I hope some of the younger girls learning that now that they're having an, you know able to play more on sports teams that you kind of have to help each other to win. And sometime, there has to be. A star. And, sometime, that's the quarterback sometime that's the pitcher in the guy that can hit the grand slam home run like puts. Hernandez. Whatever his name is did for the dodgers women no learn that lesson and they don't help each other. They don't know how to work together with other women is that probably than reinforced back then there's a lot less women in the workforce overall. So just didn't. Learn that because women to learn it with. Yeah, I. Think. So that's what I'm saying we weren't on teams. We didn't learn that how teams work together and look at look at what happened to Hillary Women Support Hillary I it's hard to describe. Unless you've lived in it and you've seen it and it's hard to describe to man I. Think because they just don't don't see. They don't get it is that there is kind of jealousy among women. That is a very female thing. It's self-defeating. We'd be a lot further ahead if we learn to work together and support each other. Even with everything you're saying though do you still felt like accomplishment getting into the FBI originally though, right? Yeah I was it was an accomplishment. Sure. What was that I like when you're going there for training I guess scary. I didn't want to be looked upon as weak by the males in my class or the instructors who were all male I wanted to pull my own way and I wanted to do a good job. I felt good because when I took the entrance exam if I had been white male I, would've qualified to get in. So in my own mind I didn't feel any exception had been carved out for me because women were allowed to have lower scores because they wanted to get more women in when I think about the training. I think about learning to shoot guns personal defense will tell us someone's lying information from them without them knowing is. It all those things. It's all those things plus it's a lot of academic work. We did a lot of academic work. We did I had fascinating classes in criminal psychology absolutely fascinating. They were some hard slide shows to look at I'll tell you that Jin example, Flynn murders, bodies mutilations, and it was funny because it was in explaining the psychology of Ted Bundy in we were taught by experts in the field people that had pretty much written the book towards the end of the class I had showed us. Of course, it was female bodies were mutilated female victims and they said at the end of the class, we're going to show you two days of. Young boys and men that were victims and mutilated. And they said we can guarantee you. That There's GonNa be some mail in the class that's GonNa Faint. Said you're GonNa the men are going to get sick. They won't be able to handle this. Guy's all at all of course out eight hundred lightning ha ha well, one of them hit the floor guy sitting right next to me thud. The guys were practically running out of the room to get to the men's room so they could vomit. Seeing the male body so mutilated and it's bad. The things they show, they show you the real thing it and just you're saying that they were they were made sick by seeing a male body relative a woman's body right and the women were fine seeing the women's body and with the instructors told us and neither the guy that like I said wrote the book on Criminal Psychology said that women are so conditioned in our culture to see ourselves mutilated that it doesn't bother us. But men are not. And when men see it they just they can't handle it. Kind of blowing my mind to be honest blows your mind when you see. When you actually are sitting there and you sitting next to the guy that just fainted I've never heard it put that way that we are conditioned to see women's bodies like that and it's nonchalant toss? Yeah. Yet is a mind blower isn't it? It's like the opposite like we're conditioned to see women's bodies sexualizing half naked, and then we see a naked male body it's like, Oh wow, that's that's a naked person it's. How we're conditioned.

COVID rules broken by Trump and the White House

"Trump's approach dangerous himself and others consider that right now the White House is one of the more dangerous hotspots compared to other places that includes places with less funding less doctors. She regards because many other places are just filled with people following basic rules but trump spent months discouraging mass undercutting his own CDC guidelines and rules for their use in the West Wing. The masks it's going to be. Really a voluntary thing you can do you don't have to do it. I'm choosing not to do it. A lot of people don't want to wear masks. There are a lot of people think masks are not good. Many in the White House followed his lead skipping mass even tight indoor spaces holding that recent super spreader event with two hundred guests packed in like sardines. When this outbreak hit trump's team head crucial information about the viruses spread posing extra risk to his own staff. These are people who have security clearances they have inside access, and yet they found themselves learning about the spread in the news as has been, the case ever sets according to senior trump official just as trump stage-managed returned featured him. Just ripping his mask off before going inside leading experts to ask. What White House staffer would still want to go to work tomorrow epidemiologists WANNA. Vomit. Now. I just want to take a step back to stress the obvious here. Most public policies are not tested on the people who make them or on the White House itself. The president has a policy for schools or farms or prisons. The policies not tested in real time on the president and his team. Obvious But because this virus can hit anyone rich or poor powerful or not the nation is actually witnessing this strange process right now, you're living through a piece of history. The empirical medical fact check of the president's approach to covert. Which shows the approach failing. It fails to keep himself safe. Even with the advantages, the best security and healthcare in the country. The results are in trump's policy didn't protect his team. We're approaching twenty people who now Kobe ranging from government advisors to the people running trump's reelection campaign. This is obviously not what trump wanted. Being sick having teams sick drawing the campaign focus back to Kobe when he spent months trying to shifted away to other things law and order. Crime Supreme Court basically anything coke. So. Why? I mean we know from Bob Woodward's reporting that got so much attention and other evidence. Trump new covid was deadly. He pushed the propaganda downplay to trick other people. So, what happened? Well it's clear at least two thinks i. Trump broke a cardinal rule from Mafia movies to the ten crack Commandments. He got high on his own supply but began as a political effort to trick others boomerang with people in trump's own orbit apparently believing all this propaganda that came from their own side to trick other people. How else can you explain this visage of these relatively informed adults some of them senior citizens taking such risk against their own self interest. So that's part of it. The other piece of this is the sense of false security because well, trump did endanger himself the also relied on these hypocritical measures that he thought would protect himself. And that brings us to the third and final part of this approach that I mentioned Donald Trump's moves on covert because he did secretly demand people around him would wear masks and follows CDC style rules. Just. To. Protect him.

The Bonus Army

"Welcome to kiss myths and mysteries. I'm your host Kit crumb today the mystery of the Bonus Army July twenty eighth nineteen thirty two will mark the eighth anniversary of one of the most controversial protests in US history and yet it remains virtually unknown to most Americans. On, that day nineteen, thirty, two, five, hundred, US army infantrymen loaded rifles, fixed bayonets, gas grenades containing of vomited ingredient two, hundred cavalry, a machine gun squadron eight, hundred police and six M One, nine, thousand, nine, hundred seventeen army tanks prepared to attack seventeen hundred unarmed men plus thousands of their wives and children moments before the Assault General Douglas Smith Garth in charge of the operation turned. To police officers standing next to him and said, I will break the back of the enemy. The attack was ordered by President Herbert Hoover and commanded by General Macarthur Dwight D Eisenhower was MacArthur's aide and Major. General George. S, Patton led the tank unit after donning gas masks the tossed hundreds of tear-gas grenades into the encampment which started raging fires and the assault drove all but the. Occupants of the area in Kampman was then burned to the ground. This wasn't Cuba the Philippines or the Mexican border. But in Washington DC The camp nicknamed Hoover Ville occupied by World War One veterans who were living in tents and shanties across the country and they're also in their encampment in DC with crumbling buildings all around them along Pennsylvania Avenue near the capital if your education was anything like mine, there wasn't any mention of this event. In history class four, million vets had returned from the war. This is World War One was the war to end all wars and found that others had taken their jobs that are considerably higher wage than though one dollar per day soldiers pay an expected more help from the government in nineteen twenty four Congress promised World War One veterans a bonus payment. I'll dollar twenty five for each day of overseas service and a dollar for every day of. Home Service there would be a limit of six hundred, twenty five dollars for overseas service and five hundred for Home Service but the catch twenty two was that it could not be redeemed until nineteen forty five cash quickly dubbed at the tombstone bonus because many of them would be dead before collecting with the Great Depression deepening demands for making an immediate payment we're escalating finally bill was passed, but President Hoover vetoed it in response some three hundred. Veterans led by Ex Sergeant Walter waters boarded a freight train in Portland Oregon in early May nineteen, thirty, two and headed. For Washington DC. Soon, others began their pilgrimage the cat to the capital from across the country and dilapidated buses overcrowded pickup trucks by walking hitch-hiking the vets and their families were in desperate financial shape with overdue bills to pay hunger affections hanging over their heads. They demanded immediate payment of the bonus soon, known as a bonus. Between Seventeen Thousand and twenty five thousand trekkers began arriving on May twenty third nineteen, thirty, two, assuming their demands wouldn't be met anytime soon, they proceeded to set up a long-term presence in order fashion they mapped out streets named for states, Setup Library and post office, a barber shop and a military type sanitation approach appointed MP's to keep order publish their own cap newspaper and even organized evening. Vaudeville shows. Some ten thousand other vets occupied partially demolished government buildings that surrounded the main camp between the capital and the White House. Extremely Patriotic. That's insisted on American flag fly over every tent and Shanti further as Roy. Wilkins than a young reporter with a press pass road. There was only one absentee in the Cap James Crowe get it Jim Crow. The entire massive undertaking was one in which blacks applied shared everything. Together, during world, War One, the military was still segregated as was Anacostia Park when the marchers arrived the vets who had fought a war together deliberately decided to live side by side and set up in the black section of the park. This fact alone may have led some people to fear the movement General Macarthur's most trusted subordinate Brigadier General. George Van Horn Moseley portrayed black and white veterans living together. As proof that Negroes Jewish communist were planning a revolution in truth radicals and Communists were dismissed by the veterans and were never serious element in the movement. The veterans those were still alive didn't receive their bonuses until nineteen, forty five keep in mind that many. World War One vets had died by then and families were not eligible for the bonus. The ravages of the Great Depression continued until World War Two. Today. We have a confluence of factors including the federal government's failure to protect US citizens for the Cobra virus and pandemic machine fiscal austerity in the face of another great depression a newly transparent institutional racism that has provided an unparalleled opportunity to replicate the bonus army's action in the nation's capital this time on an unprecedented scale depth and breadth of

"It has been the habit of kings throughout the world to hire tasters to test their food on the off chance. Some oppressed masses poisoned it. But Henry, the eighth cast, a wider net with his paranoia. He wanted to be certain. No one was going to poison him transdermal either meaning through the skin. He ordered that every morning, the servant, the WHO changed the kings sheets had to kiss every part of the sheets, pillows and blankets they had touched to prove they hadn't smeared poison on them. They also had to test for poison on the cushion of his son. Edwards Chamber Pot. Though the historic record doesn't say how? My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. The term mad king re entered the common lexicon a few years back. Thanks to George R. Martin's Song of ice and fire books. We'd have more than enough examples from Europe alone to choose from. George. The third born in Seventeen thirty eight was the English king who lost the American colonies. Though anti-monarchists would record stories of bizarre behavior like George Mistaking and trees for Frederick the Great? The king really did have mental health problems that manifested themselves in different periods of his life. During these times, he suffered from insomnia and talked incessant nonsense for hours. It was not uncommon for a single sentence to contain four hundred words. It has long been suspected that King George suffered from Porfirio. A genetic metabolic disorder that causes depression hallucinations, constipation, purple urine, and severe abdominal pain. However, as will come up frequently today new evidence in theories undermined that original thinking. One of the medicines that king was treated with was Gentian. This plant with its deep blue flowers is still used today as a mild tonic that may turn the urine blue. His incessant liquidity as it was called and his habit of talking until foam ran from his mouth are features that can be seen today in patients with extreme cases of mania from psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder. Besides benign sounding herbal treatments, King George would be restrained in a chair with iron straps for hours. He was also bled forced to vomit and starved suffering under the humour old or four humors school, of medicine. A recent study based on the examination of King. George's hair shows high levels of arsenic administered to him as part of the cure, but would have served to only worsen his symptoms. In the last ten years of his life, his son and Heir George, the fourth served as regent. Fans of the show blackadder will remember George the fourth brilliantly portrayed by Hugh Laurie opposite the Tischler, Rowan Atkinson character. A somewhat annoying little side note when the play the madness of George the third was made into a film. In nineteen, ninety four, the title was changed to the madness of King George. Why for fear that American audiences would think it was a sequel and wouldn't go to see it because they hadn't seen the first two. When your business is running countries and even whole empires you WanNa keep that in the family and the best way to ensure that is to make sure everybody marries somebody there already related to. When you say it like that, it doesn't sound like such a good plan. But that was how royal houses conducted themselves for centuries to ensure they retained their fortunes in the days before even a basic understanding of genetics. When close relatives reproduce, it increases their offspring's chances of being affected by. Recessive traits for all kinds of physical and cognitive disabilities, including things like hemophilia and cystic fibrosis, as well as deformities like the Habsburg jaw. Mike Tyson put a shark to sleep with his bare hands

"Well, this headline caught my eye. Mike Tyson was so scared of diving with a £200 shark that he vomited during his Tyson versus Jaws. Shark Week. Special, Really? Mike Tyson knocked out 44 opponents during his professional boxing career. Now the 54 year old can add a shark to that list after putting one to sleep with his bare hands as part of Shark Week on Discovery. Dubbed Tyson versus Jaws Rumble on the reef. A boxing legend undertook a trio of increasingly difficult and frightening challenges with seas Apex predator in the Bahamas in an effort to try to conquer his fears of returning to the ring. So he succeeded in all the tasks given to him. Tyson was so nervous before the final challenge, which saw him swim uncaged with a group of £200 lemon sharks. He vomited on the dive boat before getting in the water. He was so scared. But he's like it. See, I thought this was going to be him in a shark cage agents. He's down in the water. And he puts this Shark in like a sleeper hold with some shark experts standing there. Next to people are gonna watch this. This will be Shark Week's most popular show. I'm sure. Well, now that I know this, I'll watch that. Yeah. It's sports sort of. He does something called tonic immobility, So if you grab a shark's nose It puts it kind of in a hypnosis like state of in activity. Do you have to say I got your nose? I got your nose. But I don't watch that in the shark's eyes, Dollars eyes and they roll right over.

"Sam Sanders. Thank you so much for joining us today. Just seemed beautiful faces. You have done a lot of political reporting for NPR. You also host the podcast standard minute which covers pop culture and news so much happening in the world right now. That requires you to be plugged in I'm curious. How has the news been affecting you? In this moment it's been it's been a lot so like the news. Itself is heavy, and it's hard as a drink of color to be a real human being who you are and also processed kind of news I. Think what's bigger for me. What's larger from my mind? Right now is how. Black germ was trickily. We are asked to be a part of this story. educate white people and our white friends, but also be extremely diplomatic, and above the fray at the same time. I think even on twitter I've noticed a lot of the people that I follow being respectful about the kinds of images share, but on cable news is kind of like I mean. How many times was the image of George Floyd circulated? It makes me wonder what you think about how these stories are being covered I, think. We are seeing. Newsroom leaders. In this moment seek to cover the black men and women who are being killed by police seek to cover the black people, and all kinds of people out there protesting and marching, and the same instances they do not accept the full humanity of the black journalists in their Dutra this idea of objectivity, which is been around and. Mention John Lesson for a few decades now basically says all journalists are above the fray. They are not partisan. They are not local. They don't take any side. report the facts now. We're faced with his moment where we're having talk about black lives, matter again and newsrooms are asking folks like me to be. Objective in that Muzasa us to see both sides. But there's no both sides when a man like me is being choked up for eight minutes night. I watch cable. News and you just watching the news in general I feel like I've never seen so many kind of flat correspondence. Grave because you have them there, but it's also tough because he feels like. They're bringing them out to kind of just comment on this moment. Comment on trauma, and it's not just common. We are asked in many ways to publicly perform black grief for white consumption, and so my flight in this the moment is to say, amplify these flat voices, but don't make us. Criers were more than that journalists. It seems like right now. The it's more urgent than ever to stay informed, but. It feels all that. It seems like it's like one horrible thing after another. I'm curious like somebody who has to stay informed. How do you do that with out losing it? I would say the first order business is knowing that like you don't have to be on twitter all the time, and you should not be on twitter all the time. I think especially at night. We have to monitor our media consumption we can go to. To Sleep. There are many nights now I will turn the phone off. Walk the phone down to my car in the parking garage in my building. Put the bone in the car. The is every night in Sam's went upstairs to go to bed and then I think the second order of business is to consistently kind of truth. Squad yourself with other people you trust and Mike talk about this news with other people that you trust. If you sit at home on the scroll on the feet all day, and it's just you and your thoughts by the end of the day your tears. It is okay to call someone you know interest just to unpack. At this point is too much for anyone to deal with alone too much last night I was able to sleep in its partners. I'm able to function, but like the day before I made the mistake of opening twitter just before I went to sleep in literally the first thing in time I was video of a black being being killed Yup and I did not sleep. What can we ask you? This register is as journalists than black folks on the Internet. We feel this duty in moments like this to constantly be in the struggle, but what I always tell myself is. You can't centers up on fire to keep other people more. And at a certain point, your self destruction is not helping anyone. With so much processing of our own that we have to do with all of these traumatic entrenching headlines. I'm wondering. Has Anything changed for you about how you report the news? Take the imaginary white man off your shelter. I think what I think. Leg We so much. Show is a podcast, and it's also on the radio and the average age demo of a weekend. NPR listener is fifty eight years old plus mostly white for the longest time I was at. Gut Check everything I did and say we'll look. Will that person get and so I think my responsibility in charge to myself now? Is Not to worry if they understand all of it or like all of it, but to worry about it, but I'm saying it's true NFL what saying speaks to the vomit. I have consumed white media since I was a kid, and I just figured it out I watched frazier. Do you know I watch? I watch all that stuff and I. Know I can I can figure this out I want to give my white listeners same grace, so that's been my charged myself in this moment cake. This imaginary white may have to perform for off my shoe. And just? Tell the truth and making play

"We are back we've been talking about spring poisons that are dangerous to dogs and cats we've talked about a couple of plants out there the dangerous lily that can cause acute kidney injury in cats we talk about some common outdoor cardiac glycoside plants like fox club that can cause heart everything me as when your dog or cat gets into it rare types of plants like yesterday today tomorrow that can cause seizures and depending on where you live I wanted to talk about the risk of mushrooms no every spring we get a lot of rain in Minnesota and I always find these brown mushrooms growing in my yard especially when we get a lot of rain now the problem is mushrooms are really hard to identify I am not a psychologist I can't identify mushrooms well and I will disclose I'm a mushroom hunter I love to hunt for morale mushrooms but they're spongy cap is so hard to confuse with any other type of mushroom so I feel very comfortable hunting from around mushrooms however when it comes to mushrooms depending on where you live in the United States the majority of mushrooms are often but nine but there's a small percentage that can be deadly even the humans so I always tell people never eat a mushroom unless it comes in a styrofoam container from a supermarket because identifying poisonous mushrooms can be really difficult the biggest one that we worry about that are dangerous to dogs cats and humans is that am I need a mushroom these can actually is because the V. or liver failure there's actually five main types of mushrooms that are poisonous and they all work by different ways now again the am I need a mushroom is the most dangerous and that's the one that causes severe liver failure I actually have heard of the humans needing liver transplants because the Yemeni that is so dangerous these are often called death cap death angel mushrooms and sometimes they look really read one. animals and humans not to eat them but some and we need to look like just white regular button mushrooms so again if you can't identify mushrooms you always want to remove them from your yard and make sure your dog cat or human doesn't get into one another type of mushroom contains something called Mascarene and these would result in what we costs large signs that's the acronym S. L. U. D. G. E. stands for salivation lacrimation urination diarrhea and this will cause clinical signs in humans when they get into one it's really similar to organic phosphate or carbamate chemicals and that's similar to the axe gas or seven gas so chemical warfare we want to make sure to keep these motions at a reach but the good thing is there is an antidote atropine for this type of mushroom ingestion another type of mushroom is the false morale these kind of look like moral mushrooms but thankfully these are gonna kill you or your dog or cat they can cause profuse vomiting and diarrhea however another type of mushroom is a category that just resulting gastrointestinal irritation or dog or cat might have some vomiting and diarrhea but thankfully most the signs go away after one to two days the last category hallucinogenic mushrooms these are life threatening these are what a lot of people take a list at Lee but when dogs and cats get into them it can cause walking drunk abnormal behavior howling abnormal I've movements so you we want to make sure to keep all mushrooms at a reach I say because mushers are so hard to identify as a veterinarian I have to treat mushroom poisoning or mushroom ingestion as worst case scenario in other words if your dog comes in for eating a couple mushrooms in the backyard we still ideally want to treat them and hospo I sound and that's because I'm worried it could be that deadly am I need a mushroom that causes liver failure most the time with mushroom ingestion. I can induce vomiting give charcoal to bind up that poison from the stomach and intestines then I'm gonna treatment IV fluids stomach protect and liver protect and anti vomiting medication and monitor blood work for typically one to two days then next spring poise and I wanted to talk about our fertilizers now thankfully if you're about to fertilize your lawn and you apply and scatter those little pellets onto your grass most of the time it's not going to be a big deal for your dog or cat unless your dog gets into the whole container of it if you look at the chemical ingredients on a lot of fertilizers the happy scary looking chemical names and numbers like ten ten twenty thankfully those numbers usually represent the amount of natural elements in it so nitrogen Otash things like that thankfully those rarely resulted in issue however there are certain types of fertilizers that can't contain insecticides and that means it kills in sacks and very rarely that can cause central nervous system signs like walking drunk and rarely tremors or seizures so I would say if you are going to put fertilizer down make sure its water down into the ground or if it's a wet product then it's dried and make sure that we store open containers of fertilizers out of reach the bigger danger that I see is actually something called organic fertilizers organic typically means that it contains a carbon molecule in it and most of the time when you see an organic fertilizer it's because it's got crushed up dead things in it now a lot of people will choose an organic fertilizer because I think it's more natural but it's actually organic fertilizers that I worry about being more dangerous and more poisonous to dogs and rarely cats most of the organic fertilizers I see out there are bone meal blackmail or fish meal this means it's typically crushed up bone from farm animals it's D. hydrated blood in the. all natural sources of nitrogen which is good for the soil however as you can imagine the smell terrible in Labrador retrievers love to eat them so most of the time dogs don't want to.

"How they might tell the difference between us she vomited or oh, I need to go to see Dr buyers at the ER. Sure. Well, you're hitting one of my hot button issues because I'm sure all of your listeners have heard and maybe believes that TAT's just vomit occasionally. And that's just not true in the way. I like to emphasize that point is people. Don't just vomit randomly for no reason at all. There's always. Reason behind it. You caught a virus? You went out and partied too much the night before you're sick. There's always a reason the same holds true for cats. There's always a reason that a cat vomited. It just may not be a life threatening reason it may not be an emergency situation. It could just be a hairball in. That's okay. If your cat vomits up a hairball at three in the morning in his otherwise fine. I'm gonna tell you to go back to sleep, but not come in and visit me in the emergency room because you've cats probably fine. And we don't need to use those financial resources that are so precious in the emergency room. But if you take a step back, and you have a vomiting kitty and they're vomiting multiple times. Or they have other red flags that are going up for you like they're hiding in the house. There are less. They're not eating you're noticing weight loss. Those are red flags for me that there's something more serious going on. And they should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. What I don't want to do is wait three weeks three months to seek veterinary. Attention the best way to avoid an emergency. With the veterinary emergency room is to follow the recommendations of your primary care doctor regarding preventative healthcare. So that you're taking steps to proactively prevent an emergency. As often as possible in vomiting is one of those classic scenarios and veterinary medicine where in the emergency room the Austin here pet parents say when asked how long has your pet vomiting? Oh, it's been going on for about a month. Well, if I'm being completely honest, the cap probably should have been. Valuated a lot sooner than a month into the specific problem and not at the so I wait three days, if your cat is vomiting multiple times, you come and see me and do it during my regular business hours. Don't have to send you to the ER. I mean, no offense. Dr by it's true, though. And I when I send a patient home, and hopefully, I do that more often than not I jokingly but not so jokingly say no offense MRs Jones, but I hope we never have to meet again. And I actually mean that I never want to see that patient again through my emergency real now, if they just stopped by to say, hi, that's wonderful. But I think every emergency clinician would hope that we never have a patient come through the emergency room where there when needed, but we'd actually be really happy. If patients never needed to come in. Because that means that kids are healthy that means that these kids are doing well, and they're typically doing well because they're following the recommendations of their primary care doctor. So the things that we talked about already. Affect all cats even cats that are strictly indoors and cats that are indoor outdoor or what have you been? There are a couple of things that are more commonly seen in kitties that go outside or get outside things like trauma and toxins, and I don't want to skip over those things because they are important to can you touch on those real quick. Yeah. Absolutely. So another very common type of patient. That's presented to the emergency room is the cat. That's been hit by motor vehicle or the cat that has been attacked by some type of wild animal in their environment. I am based in Omaha Nebraska metropolitan area, surrounded by rural farmland, we have coyotes everywhere, and it is very common for us to see patients cats dogs that are traumatized attacked by coyotes. We have. A large hunting population. Unfortunately, sometimes our cats are caught in the crossfire of gunshots and arrows these obviously don't happen to the indoor kitties. These are truly accidents that happen as a result of kitty being outside. But I think that hopefully, my cat lovers would know that there was traumatized because it had wounds or I think they would know to go to the ER, but I just wanted to touch on those as sometimes the reason that you might be involved. It's a good point that the traumas of the feline world are pretty obvious. You don't need any medical training to see a wound. You don't need medical training to see that that leg shouldn't be in that position. And it's probably broken because the cat was injured by a motor vehicle accident. Those are obvious emergencies. But there are other things that cats get into outside that may not be so obvious or may not affect them immediately. It. Could take a couple of hours for clinical signs to set in and those are some of the various toxins that are outside. And it's not always a chemical that they get into in a garage or in a spill somewhere. Sometimes it's toxic plants that you didn't know was growing in your region and the cats ate it sometimes they get into things around the house. Sometimes you're never going to know what they got into. But the clinical signs when evaluated by a doctor raise concerns that this is most likely a toxin. And the reason I wanted to bring up toxins is one of the most common questions. I get asked by pet parent in the emergency room with patients that are suspected of having an intoxication is what can't you just run a talk screen. Everybody's watched medical dramas like are in Chicago med in any of those drama. Shows on the major television networks, and they hear the term talk screen chance. You just run a touchscreen. No, we can't we can't. They don't exist. We can screen for some toxins like illicit drugs and ethylene glycol, which is antifreeze. But if we were to screen for every possible common toxin with a tax screen, be would spend thousands of dollars sending samples off to laboratories all over the country, and that's not practical. So I want cat owners to know that as much as we understand that it's logical to ask that question and believe me, I think every veterinarian wishes there was such a thing as a tux screen likes are human colleagues get to use. It doesn't exist in veterinary medicine. Listen at least yet in two thousand eighteen. Yeah. And there are new toxins coming onto the scene all the time. So I don't know if it ever will. Well, this has been very informative, and I really appreciate your time. And for everyone out there, you can find out more information about critical care on the veterinary side by finding Dr buyers on critical care Devi 'em. He's on all.

"Urgency's? I take my own calls all the time as many of, you know, I'm I'm starting a vet which is a telemedicine Telehealth service for people where well actually for their pets where we are working conjunction with their vet hospitals. Just to provide veterinary care on those hours where you're that's either your hospital is closed or too busy to see you. And you have concerns and the truth is that when you run to those. Well, let's get a basic fact eighty percent eighty percent of emergencies are not emergencies. So you don't know that. So if you call in your doctor Kinsey or you're in the middle of the night. What do you do a machine that's honest as hey, thanks for calling. We're busy we're close. If you need help go to someone so critical care facility the hospital you go over there. And you spend a small fortune for that which wasn't even an emergency. So one of the most common cause I get vomiting. So first of all you have to vomiting is one thing. There's some questions you need to ask yourself when you have. A pet. That's vomiting. First of all, you know, your pets. What is the likelihood that they actually eight something that is bad or eight something that could get lodged in the intestine number one number two look at your dog. I look at your cat are the acting. Normally can they not wait till you get the next meal are they happy running alert playful active eating what's coming up. Is it food? Is it flame is bio is it grass is it pieces of leaves? It is then you can tell a lot from what they're throwing up. And if it's food how long after the eating do they vomit vomited of what looks like a full meal ten hours after eight that's a problem. And then I'm thinking about some sort of obstruction that stuff couldn't get through. If you see just yellow bile or flam and the dog is running around and can't wait for its next meal toy or whatever the play, then that's probably just like gastric reflux. That's an Asaf ajilon gastric juices that are flowing. And it's almost like our heartburn. How about a dog whose throws up something like grass relieves? Well, clearly, he ate grass Elise. And guess what they make them vomit. And if you offer them some more grass Elise he'd probably eat some more. And if you offered them food, he would eat it. Then again. So interestingly most of the vomiting stuff that we see. All right. You have to look at the pet. If the pet is super happy alert playful still their own behavior their own everything. They can't wait to go out. Again there wagging tail then you probably have nothing to worry about if they are infirm, they're old and they haven't been eating for days. And now they're vomiting, then that's a problem. That's probably a metabolic disease. We have to worry about if you have a dog whose continually vomiting and spitting up a now dry heaving, and it's a large reduction and their belly is getting very large almost like, Tim panic like a drum, very large infirm. Now, I'm concerned about bloat. That's an emergency medical emergency. You gotta get him in. In right away. And they also there hunched over there, just they look said, they look like they're in pain. They're going to a corner net. Continually trying to spit up. Nothing's coming out, you know, at first, but then nothing, that's a synagogue. So one of the best things to evaluate is just look at your pet. And if there had got dot com in the office, and it was vomiting a couple of times a week. It's a French bulldog. So I I I know friends I have some I see tons of Frenchies and this dog, I couldn't get a good look at it. Because which running around the room jumping up and down licking me in the face. I mean this clearly not a sick dog. And yet vomiting several times a week. So I ask them questions. What's coming up yellow bile? It's like when does it happen usually like late night early morning? Oh, yeah. Yeah. It's usually and build an I wake up to it. This is still eating. Oh my God. You can't stop eating. So all these questions, and I knew my answer right away. I I barely even have to put my hands on the dog. I didn't have to take an x-ray. I didn't have to take a blood test. I already knew the answer. That's why I'm. Concerned. Sometimes when these dogs are vomiting for whatever reason and all your thinking about his vomiting. You're not looking at the big picture. You're not trying to ask yourself. What was it last time? My dog actually chewed up a plastic toy or my cat, eight yarn or got into the garbage. If the answer is never I've never seen them do that that probably not that. So you have you know, your own dog? Now, you know, everything all the time and is always getting into the garbage. Now, we have something called dietary indiscretion he made eating something that is either lodge or more likely just something that just irritated his stomach. Now, let's talk about irritates. And let's talk about one of the things that I often hear when I get a call is it August acting. Okay. Maybe a little bit sluggish. But he's continued. He's vomited like five times in the last couple of hours, and I'm thinking, okay. Is he drinking? Oh my God. He's he's going to the water bowl. I wanna say go. Let them drink water. Vomiting breeds vomiting once that stomach goes. Goes through is vomiting episode. It's almost like taking a rag a wet rag and ringing it out the inside of that stomach is so irritated. Now. That anything anything that goes back in that stomach even something as benign as water could induce more vomiting, and he stretches that stomach wall is going to induce more vomiting. So now that second third and fourth vomiting may maybe totally related only to the first one and nothing new, and it's because the stomach is so irritated. So when I often ask recliner client comes in with the concern of I will offer them. Well, I I asked if they're drinking water if they do and they want to drink water. That's actually a good sign. Now. How about if I offer them something really tasty to eat? And I mean, really tasty I often give them a little baby food right out of the jar. If they like attack my finger. That's a really good sign now going to let him eat it away. But the fact that they want to eat despite the vomiting is really a good sign because dogs that have more serious reasons for mommy will turn. Their nose to filet Mignon. They will not eat anything. That's how lousy they feel and they're hunched over their body position indicates that they just really feel like crap and those are the ones that probably needs more medical attention. So what I recommend? If you have a dog bombing evaluate your dog. Just sit back and watch him. He look is. He running feeling is he seemed like his behaviorally, he's normal. That's a good sign. Secondly, don't give them water take some ice cubes, depending on the size of the dog might be one ice cube for small dog three or four or five ice big sticking the ice cubes in the water bowl. Why? Because unless you have a dog loves to Montana ice cubes, which most don't, but some do, but for typically let the ice they can't drink a lot of water at once when the water is in the form of an ice too. So what they do is as the ice melts and they're thirsty. They can go lap a little bit of water up at a time from the melted ice, but they can't get a whole large volume at once. Now, of course, one of the side effects that we worry about without extensive vomiting. Is dehydration. So they do need the fluids. And if we have to deliver fluids without getting through the gastrointestinal tract, we have to give it to them. Either sub Q is small we can do that or medium large dogs really needed IV giving fluids would cost subcutaneous to a big dog. Probably not going to be that effective. So you have the bigger the dog the more likely they're going to need an IV. And then of course, medication to stop the vomiting, and depending on what's coming up. How soon after eating what their general demeanor is like it's cetera will dictate are we going to need x rays to take a look and see if history indicates a dog. Oh, my talk everything I think Iraq all rock out of a dog. Hey, if you want to go into my my Instagram at Dr Jeff wherever you will see I did a little show with this dog who actually his name is Louis who actually eight Iraq. And I'm not talking to small rock how you even got into his wrote to stomach. I couldn't believe it. So so yes, some dog eat crazy things we call that pica. Eating of inanimate objects and this dog did it. So with the history of the dog who each things like that. Then. Yes. Of course, I'm going to take an x Ray. And of course, if they are dogs that are really just agr this ain't doing right there. You're sluggish there slow they'd just look sad and have very tender belly. And of course, we're gonna do blood work. I'm looking the organ failures induced vomiting Liber disease causes vomiting pancreatitis is a huge one that causes severe vomiting kidney disease, high be when blood urea nitrogen that causes vomiting. So sometimes we have metabolic diseases that lead to vomiting, not necessarily just gastrointestinal. But even some of the extra abdominal organs are when when they are inflamed when irritated when they are affected where they are. In fact, they can also cause vomiting other. It's one of those symptoms that there are so many potential reasons some need extensive workup extensive treatment and some simple as. Keep away from it. Feed them late nights knack after the episode ton of water, and these are the things that will kind of guide you say don't panic and of as I said really evaluate the big picture. Anyway, that's about all we have time for today. We will be here. If you have any subject medical subjects. Something your pet is going through whether you know, a disease like just had a diabetes case come in this week that you just want more information. Maybe some help how to treat it. Maybe some guides of even had what tests to use to diagnose is you're getting bombarded by your veterinarian who's just saying. Oh, my God, we need just two thousand dollars worth of tests. Oh my God. He vomited you're doing them. All right. So you got. If you just pick my brain what's left of anyway? And. "To someone so critical care facility hospital. You go over there, and you spend a small fortune for that which wasn't even an emergency. So one both common calls. I get vomiting. So first of all you have to vomiting is one thing. There's some questions you need to ask yourself when you have a pet. That's vomiting. First of all, you know, your pets. What is the likelihood that they actually eight something that is bad or eight something that could get lodged in the intestine number one number two look at your dog. Right. Look at your cat, are they acting? Normally are can they not wait till you get the next meal are they happy running alert playful active eating what's coming up. Is it food? Is it flame is bio is it grass is it pieces of leaves? Well, if it is then you can tell a lot from what they're throwing up. And if it's food how long after the eating do they vomit evade vomited? What looks like a full meal ten hours after the? Eight that's a problem. And then I'm thinking about some sort of obstruction that the stuff couldn't get through. If you see just yellow bile or phlegm and the dog is running around and can't wait for its next meal or toy or whatever the play, then that's probably just a gastric reflux, that's an esophageal or gastric juices are flowing, and it's almost like our heartburn. How about a dog whose throws up something like grass relieves? Well, clearly, he ate grass Elise. And guess what they make them on it. And if you offered them some more grabs Elise it probably eat some more. And if you offered them food he would eat it that again. So interestingly most of the vomiting stuff that we see. All right. You have to look at the pet. If the pet is super happy alert playful still their own behavior, their own everything they can't wait to go out again, the whacking their tail then you probably have nothing to worry about if they are infirm, they're old and they haven't been eating for days. And now they're vomiting, then that's a problem. That's probably a metabolic disease. We have to worry about. If you have a dog whose continually vomiting and spitting up a now, dry heaving, and it's a large reduction and their belly is getting very large almost like Tim panic like a drum very large and firm now, I'm concerned about bloat that's an emergency. That's a medical emergency. You gotta get him in right away. And they also there hunched over there just a look said, they look like they're in pain. They're going to a corner and continually trying to spit up. Nothing's coming out, you know, at first he does. But then nothing that's a sick dog. So one of the best things to evaluate is just look at your pet. And if there I had a dog come in the office, and it was vomiting couple of times a week. It's a French bulldog. So I I I know Frenchies I have some I see tons of Frenchies and this dog, I couldn't get a good look at it. Because which running around the room jumping up and down licking me in the face. I mean this clearly not a sick dog. And yet vomiting several times a week. So I ask questions what's coming up. Just yellow by. When does it happen usually like the late night early morning? Oh, yeah. Yeah. It's usually in Bill the night wake up to it. This is still eating. Oh my God. You can't stop eating. So all these questions, and I I knew my answer right away. I I barely even have to. But my hands on the dog. I didn't have to take an x Ray I didn't have to take a blood test. I already knew the answer. That's why I'm concerned. Sometimes when these dogs are vomiting for whatever reason and all your thinking about his vomiting. Not looking at the big picture. You're not trying to ask yourself. What was it? Last time. My dog actually chewed up a plastic toy or my cat, eight yarn or got into the garbage. If the answer is never I've never seen them do that that probably is not that. So you have to know your dog. Now few gawk at you know, eats everything all the time, and there's always getting into the garbage. Now, we have something called dietary. Indiscretion he made eaten something that is either lodged or more likely to something that just irritated his stomach. Now, let's talk about irritated stomach. And let's talk about one of the things that I often hear when I get a call is the dog. Was acting. Okay. Maybe a little bit sluggish. But he continued he's vomited like five times in the last couple of hours, and I'm thinking, okay. Is he drinking all my God? He's he's going to the water bowl. I wanna say don't let them drink water. Vomiting breeds vomiting once that stomach goes through is vomiting episode. It's almost like taking a rag a wet rag and ringing it out the inside of that stomach is so irritated. Now. That anything anything that goes back in stomach even something is benign as water could use more vomiting, and he stretches up stomach wall is going to induce vomiting. So now that second third and fourth vomiting may maybe totally related only to the first one and nothing new, and it's because the stomach is so irritated. So when I often ask or Kleiner client comes in with the concern evolving. I will offer them. Well, I I asked if they're drinking water if they do and they want to drink water. That's actually a good sign. Now. How about if I offer them something really tasty to eat? And I mean, really tasty I often give them a little baby food right out of the jar. If they like attack my finger. That's a really good sign now going to let them eat it away. But the fact that they want to eat despite the vomiting is really a good sign because dogs that have more serious reasons for marketing will turn their nose to filet Mignon, they will not eat anything. That's how lousy they feel and they're hunched over their body position indicates that they just really feel like crap and those are the ones that probably need some more medical attention. So what I recommend if you have a dog at farming evaluate your dog just sit back and watch him as he look is he running is. He is he seemed like is behaviorally he's normal. That's a good sign. Secondly, don't give them water take some ice cubes, depending on the size of the dog might be one ice cube for small dog three or four or five is good for big sticking the ice cubes in the water bowl. Why? Because unless you have a dog who loves too much ice cubes which most don't but some do. But for typically let the ice they can't. Drink a lot of water at once when the water is in the form of an ice ICU. So what they do is as the ice melts and they're thirsty. "It is vomiting, but the dog doesn't bring anything. So sometimes we hear that called wrenching or non-productive vomiting in the reason that that is a big red flag for veteran areas. And why I wanted to be a big red flag for dog owners is because with that type of behavior is seen that makes us very concerned that a dog may be living with an emergency condition called gloat medical term for bloat is jazz strick Dila tation involve euless, so let's break that term down. What does that mean? Well, we often call it G D V dilation means the stomach's just gonna fill up with gas, and or food just gonna get big and Volvo s means that it's going to flip on itself. So we have two things going on in patients with bloat or GDP. I. Stomach. It's really big with food and air. And then because of that it twists on itself it flips and win it flips things can't get out either through vomiting or through normal passage into the intestinal track. That's an absolute emergency for a dog large breed dogs. And giant breed dogs are over represented for this problem, but it can happen in any dog. I have seen your keys and rat terriers with gastric delegation. So if you're at home in your dog is vomiting in they're not bringing anything up there doing this nonproductive wretched, then you need to get them to a veterinarian as soon as possible why? Because unfortunately, uncorrected. Elected dogs will die. They will die and they will die fairly quickly. And it won't be any fun at all. So yes, if your dog is wrenching seek help immediately. It's not one of those things where you go and Google it. And you look my Facebook page up, and you think you just need to go at they just die that is so true. And I think it's also worth the dog owners out there knowing that effective treatment of gastric, delegation fog, the required treatment for bloat is surgical. And I'm not a surgeon. I don't like placing animals under anesthesia unless absolutely necessary if we're going to effectively treat a patient with bloat, they need emergency surgery. There's no way around it. Excellent point. Well, while we're talking about the gastrointestinal tract. I see a good bit of dogs with. Diarrhea and diarrhea. You know, it's something I see my general practice, but certain kinds of diarrhea, especially if they happen actor hours really need to see you. Can you talk about that? So diarrhea happens for every dog every person. Let's be honest. We're gonna get personal and not every human that has diarrhea needs to rush to the emergency room at three in the morning. Same thing holds true for a dog. I don't pretend to that every dog owner likes dealing with diarrhea, but not every dog that has diarrhea needs to go to the emergency room at three in the morning when I do want patients seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, even if it is at three in the morning is win that diarrhea has a couple of characteristics. Those characteristics are either it looks like there's raspberry jam coming out of the hind, Dan. So that raspberry jam is indicative of fresh bleeding coming from the large intestine or the colon. The other situation where I want animals to bring their dog to the veterinarian as quickly as possible is when the diarrhea is black when it looks like tar so that raspberry GM diarrhea is medically called motto Kiza in that black Tari diarrhea is called Melania. No, I told you that the raspberry jam looking stuff is because there's been fresh bleeding into the large intestine. Why is the feces turn black? Why does the poop turn tar like? Well, that's what Di chested blood looks like in. So what that tells us what that tells a veterinarian is there has been some bleeding higher up in the intestinal tract. He threat the level of the stomach or small intestine, and as that blood has passed through the intestinal track. It's been digested an ultimately manifest as that black color in the feces anytime, I have concerns about leading in the intestinal tract either because of Melania or that meadow Lia we need to see a veterinarian as quickly as possible. Absolutely. Because I'm with the medical therapy needs to be instituted sooner rather than later. So while we're talking about things they're coming out of the back end. I know that you mentioned that it is important that doglovers be aware of other kinds of discharges like badge discharge on their female dogs. Can you talk about what kind of concerns you about discharge? Sure. So in the United States, most female dogs are spayed they've gone through surgery called an ovarian historic Demy so their uterus and their ovaries have been removed. So they are unable to welp. They're unable to have puppies. But there are breeding bitches they're sweet dogs, but they're the population that I don't wanna see vaginal discharge. I don't wanna see anything coming through the vulva. Why if intact female dog has discharge coming through the vulva as a veterinarian I am concerned about a uterus. Infection called Hieaux maitre Pyo maitre is the big fancy medical way of saying the uterus is full of pus, and it is often considered a surgical emergency. So it's very important for my dog loving listeners to know that vaginal discharge can be a surgical emergency. And that their dog will die if.

"Us to better identify if there's see Apollo along the way amass or some changes that could cause some outflow obstruction out of that area. So. Part of her losing weight and still having it tied, and I do feed her, you know, twice a day, smell meals. And for her, you know size, I think the meals are appropriate this, you know, dogs, sometimes ten tend to overeat. She definitely is seems to want to eat anytime. In if she's taking in about the normal amount that she has in the past and she's losing weight, then there's there's a disparity there somewhere. Ryan. There are definitely whether it's a chronic health condition or something of a cancer nature. We know that the bunny needs more energy and can't utilize well when we're fighting those problems. So that can explain perhaps why she might be eating okay or even have a strong appetite in losing weight. So I guess in the back of my mind, I, I'd say, yeah, I didn't courage to keep looking because some things it, it certainly would be better to tackle head on rather than kind of wait for them to become more of a problem and become more apparent. And I don't know that you know the the leg thing probably gets me too excited about the looking on the leg, but. At one joint than she's caused a sore. And so I would. I've gone to a natural path and and acupuncture that doesn't, you know, she's still choose on it and it's all Brown, you know, from her chewing and licking. Yeah, a lot of dogs can do that where we see and what we call a lick granular, and that's a little settings can cause that from allergies to board them to you, name it. But I'd really say that, yeah, I think in the situation, I would encourage a move forward. In the meantime, we might try things with having some vomiting ongoing. We might try some hypoallergenic diets or some easily digestible diets as well as my husband seats the dog because he overpaid. Okay. All right. Well, I, I hope that's all lady is definitely I'd say, you know, if the weight Loss's continue, I stir up, you'll doctors phone and say, hey, you know, I'm ready to take that next step and see if there's more going on there would would you recommend any other specific blood test? I mean, they've ruled out thyroid. They ruled out diabetes because he isn't like ringing and peeing a lot. And so it's not that. Yeah, and that's a good question. There are some health conditions when with the pink that can cause some problems with a weight loss. Generally, we'll see vomiting diarrhea. Some other things in that would be more in the t. l. i. family or the p. l. i. those are specialty pancreas tests that can be done. I'd have to say though if they feel something kinda strange in the belly, I'd follow their instincts in a track that because some of these other things we can do we, we can add on all sorts of tests. But I'd say with clinical intr-. In really what's most pertinent your situation into your pet situation in? And I'm certainly track that way. I maybe before we go looking for, you know, other tests that we can do. But for the ultimate on, I mean, they when they said two hundred and forty dollars, I says, oh, well, let's see. She gets tough. Sure. Well, you know that the blood tests I'm proposing at least in my area can easily run you one hundred and twenty. So it's starting to get into some more costly thing. So yeah, I'd say as much as you probably don't want to hear those dollar signs Jinglin along with that Imma be the most prudent way to go for at this point. So that way they could. No, it's a mess that causing pressure that making her grow up when she overeats okay. Yeah, if there's mass effect in that area and again, we can't see everything those little polyps inside the luminary inside the structure of the digestive track, but the big things hopefully they'll be able to pick that up and give us some direction on that. I hope that helps you gives you some some food for thought there ago, Karen and best wishes to you and your baby and hope.

"Fly and so on and so forth, or you know, there's always like I mean, they say like you can viruses airports. Biggest problem is people flying from here today, and they bring, you know, viruses, and everything from one country to another same thing with insects and stuff like that. These things can crawl into your luggage. And it seems that that's how it was introduced in England to begin right? So they could end up anywhere could be here in the United States. So what happens though, because you've got a Caterpillar on your. Kills you at the same time. We start bombing all over the place vomiting blood. So if you touched a Caterpillar, and you said, you get a really bad case of asthma vomiting and skin rashes. You know, you touch the wrong Caterpillar, actually for tickles. But I mean, you gotta be careful with that. And one thing that I noticed actually out feeding the chickens before the show, and how ironic that sounds and good early. I'm out there for five ten minutes covered in mosquitoes already here in the Florida region. Oh, yeah. So, you know, the southeast is kind of like the example of what the year is going to be like in the northeast and everywhere else out west and everything as it starts to warm up and the infestation of fleas mosquitoes chicks already in the south. If it's anything like that in the north wants, it starts to warm up more. It's going to be a killer year for bugs and stuff. Definitely. And they a lot of these insects. Unfortunately, also, transmit disease. So gotta be very careful. Now, what is it with the mosquitoes heart worm correct, correct for dogs and cats? Some other species, but primarily dogs and cats free lines in in canines, but another thing that we have to keep in mind. Also in civil lightest most mosquitoes can. You know? And then can that can also be just made it to people. So not just animals now what about for fleas? I mean, we know that it bugged the heck out of our pets. You know, when they're biting them, and so on and so forth. But what about if they swallow a flea they can get a tapeworm egg. And then, of course, tapeworm infestation. So you see a little segments coming out of the pooper your pets? Doctor veterinarian it has to be treated in. It means that a certain point dating jested Tibor mix somehow whether they would biting on themselves at ingested the flea or directly ingestion from the environment. Tapeworm egg kill kind of looks like a little rice. But it moves. Yes. Isn't that? Pretty yes. No, it's not it's grows. You know, what it is you see rice coming out of your pets behind cats? Feline infectious anemia, which is a you know, you is like picture like a bog eating up there a triggering an immune response in the body of the cat where it attacks his own. There's other kinds of all kinds of different types of tick borne diseases that we can talk about. But just be aware these animals, not just suck blood. They also Chesney disease. So be careful try to cover up and so on and so forth where your bug spray's if you have to and if you can long sleeves, you know, to try to keep them away. "It, progress to, hi spike fevers, vomiting which just you know I mean that's. A normal something normal kid to get holes in. Originally that's. What we thought it was, and and fill it wasn't and we decided to are the attrition told us to. Take him into the emergency room and and they did and immediately they could tell. Something was a little more wrong. Than just a cold so they decided. To quarantine him and. Then from there it just it? It progressively got worse, how how long was this process We went. In on Thursday night Julie took Kyle. To cook children's hospital. In Fort Worth on Thursday night And he. Was gone Sunday morning at eleven eleven oh my gosh oh my gosh So go ahead That that's the thing about this and and, and the payoff and it acts so quickly that one of the other fathers of child that they. Lost in Florida he. Said it, best he said When you realize. What it is it's. Too late Well or it was for us Because back, then you know seven years ago we didn't have, the drug that we have now but it's just it's, it's devastating if anybody new Kyle the way that we knew Kyle is his hair was on fire and you couldn't hold the kid down unless she's, duct tape them to a tree which I actually did It takes kiddos. And and it it it's horrible like you said you hope you never have to go through it its worst case scenario we're not. Supposed to bury, our kids, it's just it's, devastating so there's a special done by a friend, of mine who is producing this special Darren foster who, used to produce for me eons ago he's doing this medical mini series on on h. l. and it premiers Sunday and it's somethings killing me and, it's the medical mysteries You know we we're we're able to find our we're able to, cure that have been plaguing us for quite some time Julia are you there I am so can can you tell me as? A as a mom what what was? This? And what happened To us we thought he maybe. Just had a cold or a flu and then that evening when they, told me he might have viral meningitis we thought he was going, to sleep it off and. Maybe get medication then go home and become the? Rambunctious boy again that we knew but Everything changed that Sunday morning. And they didn't actually find this amoeba until after the passed away, really World changed forever at that moment and they didn't have the drug then but they do now They do now yes there there's been lots of, studies for many many years and there were some things that did help to kill the amoeba but such rapid destruction that it, wasn't timely enough and It's, ADL this actually this this amoeba actually eats the brain Yeah multiplies itself and destroys the? Brain and how did, he get into Kyle through the river Well we know it's. Present in the river in the lake that we were in president most fresh bodies of water but it. Goes, up if it gets up the. Nose to the olfactory nerve when it starts its destruction It makes me never want to get into. A river or lake again You know we grew up. In Texas and we were, always gonna, lake we're. Always in a river I was. In cattle pond you, know it's, never it's never something you think about but after we, learn you know one. Of the, tag lines, that everybody always uses it but it's. So rare so rare you know in in the grand scheme of things when you look at how. Many cases have been correctly identified it is I'll go along with that but what's, even scarier Glenn is that. When when these kids go into the hospital the, doctors have no idea, they're not thinking about it because their whole life their whole. Medical career all they've, heard and all they've ever been told so rare so that's what I So that's what I was kind of, asking Julia Jeremy whichever one. Can answer this is well how did it manifest, itself that we that, that a parent could see wait a minute wait a minute. This is something different You know it's. It's it's it's one of those things we were, in the, hospital and, we got a text message from Julie's mom and, she's, Saturday more mid morning, she she actually said look you guys were in fresh bodies of..

"Right but how how would kevin encounter that he drives by those homeless people so fast and his fancy car looks down how how would you even have contact with that to get that set almost impossible to avoid it in los angeles right now it he walks to work he lives in hollywood and he said he realized now that he goes back out on the street he's passing it all over the place he wasn't aware of it but if you don't pay attention it's all toilets and the toilets tried to tap out tuesday wouldn't allow it i saw the classic symptom is vomiting diarrhea vomiting very prominent that kind of goes away and then the diarrhea persist bad muscle aches low grade fever yep yep and then the diarrhea continue i didn't realize it was like an epidemic has a real meaning i don't know if this qualifies but it's widespread you're saying it's widespread and it has the perfect medium to be spread and i'm telling you the leading edge the next thing is going to be the roy rodentborne flea you'll diseases and our city i think our city officials should be held accountable for whatever how do we do that i don't know but they they their lack of ability to function as a government is what's causing the population to be harmed and in really grave danger i can blame the government for what happened to me the last three days i wish you would because there are people suffering in the streets they're doing nothing about sanitation is failing they're doing nothing about it and now there's going to be major infectious disease outbreaks this is why we have cities because we've discovered sanitation we we don't have to do that anymore but dr drew and i know that this is a much bigger issue that any of us are ever going to be able to figure out you know a couple of minutes but i just saw that la times article this week about whatever the number was forty three thousand i think it was homeless on the streets in los angeles county right now by the way let that sit in and sink in for a minute fortythree thousand people homeless in l la county is in la county right but they were saying however having said that there are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of beds that are available to them programs that go empty every single because that is because we have decided politically it's more expedient to call it a housing problem rather than a mental mental health crisis when the fact is this is strictly speaking a mental health problem and if we expanded there's a senator in california the sacramento just trying to expand the role of conservative ship there's a county supervisor some of them are working hard to try to expand the nature of gravely disabled and if you do that we will begin to erode away this very very quickly because if you can put people in these places where when they get better they look back in they're pissed at anybody that let them deteriorate to the point that they did because their brain isn't working because it's the nature of the condition then you very kindly give them proper care and vocational rehab whatnot they look back and they're pissed i've seen it and seen it and seen it one percentage would you say of that fortythree thousand are mental cases sixty sixty percent maybe higher and a large percentage that sixty percent is a drug al i've you drug users and we are the listen they were how many tens of thousands of needles were in the santa ana river bed talked to one of those supervisors down there and he said yeah that we got forty five thousand needles out of bed those are the ones we could find the rest of them you're going to swim into oh right and so this is this is and look and they're humans are suffering on the streets and our government is doing nothing in the name of what civil liberties give me a break so what is it possible for us to do kevin you're going to be case wanted we're gonna hold the key accountable you're gonna die why do we have to start with but kevin you're the poster child for great change great guy so many people doc obama hope post you and instead of just say nope.

"Our symptoms of ebola virus ebola virus disease so ebola virus disease used to be called ebola haemorrhagic fever it's no longer called that but it this symptoms include a pretty sudden onset of fever and a relatively high fever fatigue muscle pain headache and often a sore throat then this is pretty quickly followed by vomiting diarrhea rash liver and kidney failure and sometimes although importantly not all the time internal and external bleeding so that's where it got its previous name hemorrhagic fever ray because two hemorrhage is basically just to bleed uncontrollably mmhmm so internal bleeding which is something that we talked about i believe and yellow fever as well that can result in things like black or bloody stool or vomit if you're bleeding into your gi tract and then external bleeding it's not i think a lot of people have a misconception that he bola results in you like explore voting blood out of your orifices doesn't happen any mola you can get using of blood from your gums or your nasal passages may be the corners of your eye and things like that because he bullock can infect a huge variety of tissues ebola virus does exist in basically all of your mucus membranes and things so anywhere that it exists you can get bleeding but you don't have like explosive bleeding ray there's no there's no bleeding out right so you tend to die from things like very similar to what you die from an septic shock which is your body rain overloaded by both immune defences and the virus itself and then just organ failure and that's what ends up actually causing death the virus is transmitted via direct contact with certain bodily fluids actually most bodily fluids feces saliva blood vomit seamen noone said it but i would assume vaginal fluids as well and then the.

"I feel very guilty about that there's nothing we could do because even if we warned everybody in episode before this at this is coming that would set off a panic attack just the mere mention of the word vomit can can set the the anxiety disorder into full gear yeah this one article you sent one of the clinicians interviewed um who treats anxiety disorders said it is in her practice the most common fear among children that they see now uh and that's typically how it start so it's a chronic disease meaning that if you don't treat this it's going to persist basically every day of your life in a tends to get worse over time yeah um and it usually starts with a traumatic experience of vomiting most frequently of all in childhood so it's it's more common i think among kids but it can't survive into adulthood and it can start in adults but what seems to happen is you have a traumatic experience it's from vomiting and just like with any other traumatic experience whether it's surviving a um a violent crime or being in war um vomiting can have that same effect on the brain apparently and you develop something pretty closely akin to ptsd here at the thought of vomiting and it over while beer life as a result i had a traumatic experience with this when i was a kid and um i might add told the story before for another reason but um i was on the bus go into elementary school and there was a scary kid remember element you school they were just the scary kids i remember my scary kid's first and last night yeah right in their scary for various reasons whether they were bullies or i mean you could probably diagnosis something that was wrong as an adult right but as a kid they were to scary kids and i'm not talking about like uh i mean the until now like sociopathic behave.
