"Bear is a program dedicated To informing and educating about exactly that sustaining Hawaii. Our primary focus is on agriculture but also ancillary issues topics. Pertain to sustaining Hawaii today. We have a great program because today we are focusing on Hawaii agriculture. Yes, Hawaii. On my favorite places on this earth. We're going to cover a lot of ground. The relevance status, the present condition and importantly, The future. Joining us a little bit later on is going to be Josh Ohara. Ah. He is chair, the Committee of Kuwaiti Economic Development Board and many other areas. But to start things off. We are delighted that a good man good friend is on board with this Senate President Ron Coochie and Ron, I want to thank you so much for taking the time to be on sustaining Hawaii. How are you? I'm good, Rick, but it's like a sports coach and the letter E. So it's coach E O Did. I think I didn't have my my third cup of coffee. And that's what happens and run it, though it gets butchered all that time. Not a problem. No worries beef Curries. Hey, tell you what, First of all, I'm very glad you're with us. As I said. And I want to thank you for taking the time we're going to focus on a great deal away agriculture feeding our community during a pandemic. I'd like to start off there. If you don't mind. We'll get into some egg topics. We're very fortunate You're with us. Can you tell us how Kawai is faring during a cove? It Americal. Comey took some rather stringent methods on the initial closed down. He had nine PM curfews, and he had Restrictions in place that were tougher than the other three counties. But clearly the numbers fork away have been fantastic. On DH. They have diligently enforced. The quarantine they've made over 60 arrests. On the way and the partnership with the National Guard and the Koi Police Department has has been fantastic. And you know he's out with Janet Behrman, the Department of Health Officer Fork. Away public service announcements and really great cooperation from the community. Realizing that away has the oldest demographic population off the four counting. So you know it's a lot of our Capuano we of which I am one. I'm over 60 these days. You know, there's a lot of respect for keeping friends and family safe. Would you mind also just sharing with us? Ah, a little bit about yourself, Senator because you have such a great vested interest in agriculture. On Hawaii, maybe a little bit more about your personal background and then let us know. How is the community doing on coy? Sure I served on the court County Council for 22 years I started at age 25. I was on the first elected board for the Koel Island utility cooperative. And as we have been pursuing renewable energy alternatives that Three plus years of experience on Ko, you see has been invaluable. And you know we have over 60% renewable energy to the grid on Kuwait by far in away, leading The state and there are times on sunny days that we are providing. 100% renewable to our grid, something we're very proud of. And then since 2000 and 10 I've served in the Hawaii state. Senate. And since the you know may of 2015 as the president on and then quite frankly, I didn't know very much about egg. My dad was Police officer of My mom worked for first Hawaiian bank so we didn't grow up on the plantation. Although I had an uncle again. Robinson and all of my friends. Ah, lot of them were from Temptation families, but when I first got to State Senate. I knew that AG was important for Hawaii and so I served on the Agriculture Committee for four years. And was very interested initially and how it could put more local food on our school lunches and we kept meeting resistance because they said, what is on a plate in corner? And a plate in Lee, who he needs to be the same thing and federal nutritional standards. And it was all about why we couldn't and I'm pleased to report. You know, now it's about how we can And we found out it was a lot easier to work with the hospitals. Then the schools. They have a couple of procurement exemptions. And so two years ago we started Found the path that quite Veterans Memorial Hospital in West Quay Samuel Barcelona in About to convert to more locally sourced. Products on the plate. And when I checked with the board chair this morning before the call, I'm pleased to report that the two hospitals are currently putting about 70% of what's on the plate. You know, being locally sourced, and we don't have dairy. So when you think about some things that we just Can't locally get you know 100% is not realistic, But 70% is incredible and it's been so good people have been asking When we come into the hospital to buy those community people And then we were able to show the deal IV that the school district comprised of 15 schools, was ready to proceed ahead of the pilots. Happening at school. Here and there throughout the state, and the whole district started on January 6th. To have more locally sourced food on the plate. Unfortunately, coded 19 hit A lot of it is now grab in goal, which creates a different kind of menu. But the I guess serendipitous. Ah, turn of events. Those networks that were created too. Try to get more locally sourced food. The fort of the Hospitals and the school's created distribution networks as we were trying to feed the community, and we were in a unique position. Collaboratively work in our community to get those who needed food locally sourced food. And the USDA had two organizations on Coop. I receive almost half a million dollars each to deliver. Of boxes of food that they purchased from local farmers to make sure that we were continuing to support them. And then certainly the fantastic support from A White Community foundation threw the food bank, Salvation Army and a host of other nonprofits. No, really..
