The Birthplace of Saint Augustine

"World of augustine encircled the mediterranean sea spain and portugal. To the west france switzerland and the british isles to the north greece turkey israel to the north and to the east. Of course italy extending right into the sea the boot poised to kick a soccer ball also known as sicily and stretching all along the south egypt in the coast of africa. Agusan is from africa. Now that's the modern designation as are all of those country names. I just listed for you and the three hundred and four hundred. This was all rome. All of these peoples were roman or were to be considered roman and all of these places were part of the far flung roman empire augusta was born specifically in what was called new media the roman province of namibia. It is modern day algeria. His hometown was aghast. It was originally a village of nomadic. Berbers and back in the two hundred and one hundred species does the punic. Wars rome took control of this vast area as guston was born. Rome reached its zenith as augusta and lived roman declined and as guston died. Rome fell well. The gas was two thousand feet above sea level. It was surrounded by mountains that were another thousand feet or so and it was a very fertile plain. In fact the most fertile land in north africa it was a great place to settle and farm. Corn olives were mostly harvested and had a great economy one. A story noted how it became a retirement destination spot for roman soldiers. Did you ever wonder where the lions and bears and tigers in the roman amphitheatres came from. Will they were caught in the mountains and in the plains around agustin's hometown of the gas one hundred and seventy miles away to the east was the massive city of carthage. It was bustling with people and trade. It was second city only to rome and sixty miles or so to the northwest hippo regis. That city would come to play a significant role in the life of augustine. Near the end. Agustin's father was patricia. S a roman pagan. His mother was monica and devout and sometimes mystical christian much much more on her later as our book unfolds. Augustine had siblings. But we know very little about them he had at least one brother navigate. Send at least one sister and he likely had more brothers and sisters. But we just don't know that much about them at all. He was born on november thirteen. Three fifty four. This was a full generation of post. Constantine rome one. After constantine's conversion did you see the air quotes there. i put around network. that's important. This was the christian era at the end of the roman empire of course alongside of christianity. Plato's philosophy and the schools that followed him ruled the roost. That's important. It was a time of doctrinal advance. Augusta lived right in between the nineteen creed three twenty five and the cow sedonia creed of 451 that's important. He also lived during the time of heresies. They were springing up all over the place. Will that too is important if you were to ask a young augusta playing in the streets of the gassed. What do you want to do when you grow up. He would answer with one word. I wanna be

How to Avoid Deadly Weather-Related Accidents with Rob Mark

"Today of course. We're going to talk about that via far into imc It's it's not a new Reason at all that people are hurting themselves in airplanes In fact it's been around for quite a long time. I just finished in fact writing a story for flying magazine. That'll be out. I believe next issue About via far. And i m seeing and of course we all know what happens. People fly into whether that they have no business. Being in but big question is why so. Maybe that's some of what we're going to talk about today while everything we're talking about today is certainly weather related. And the unfortunate thing about via far into imc accidents is that ninety percent of them. Fatal which makes them the most lethal of any kind of an accident. So if you're gonna have an accident don't have a fear foreign to die. mc accident. I did a study years ago where i looked at via foreign. Imc accidents over a ten year period. And i was wondering do instrument pilots also have them. The answer was yes so they have them at a somewhat lower rate and i think There were certainly times. When i was not current as an instrument pilot and so i would fly via far and you've just got to maintain those normal via far visibility cloud clearance minimums otherwise even if our pilots could find themselves Going into imc and having an accident. Well i think that when we we are training pilots Will often ask them. Okay give me. The cloud clearances for For via far won't see five hundred of below a thousand above two thousand horizontally from you got it baby but the question is does a pilot really understand what that looks like. When they're flying via far how do they. How do they tell. When they're five hundred feet below or a thousand above or two thousand feet horizontally from because most of us never really get up there in those kinds of conditions to say okay. Here's what those minimums look like. And unfortunately i think that People fly into whether and then they say oh my gosh in the first thing they do is always look down and looking down does nothing more then make the situation worse because you're in the clouds there is no down there is no up. There's no left and right An unless you're really current on instruments up you're gonna lose control of the airplane so the key is is some good risk management to make sure that you don't fly when those conditions are possible or that you give them a very very wide birth which of course we're gonna find in this accident Today this pilot did not give the weather at all yeah. I've had at least two times. That i can remember in my forty years of flying where i went to from via far into. Imc one case was at night. And boy. I was working absolutely as hard as i could to avoid. The clouds were in a metro area. Things were reasonably well lit with the surface lighting and yet we still found ourselves in a cloud. There are times when it's just virtually impossible to see the cloud no matter what you do now. A particular case. We were very close to francisco bay. So i knew that a slight turn to the right. Put me over the water. Push for a little bit pop back out of the cloud but yeah pilots set and really need to kind of anticipate win. This might happen and have a good strategy for how to avoid it now. A great strategy. Especially for people with an autopilot. Snap the autopilot on and then do a one eighty. That's true and and of course. I don't think we're going to know in this particular accident yet whether the pilot used the autopilot or not He certainly never used the the shoot in the sarah's so again we know where this was going. And i think that sometimes when we train students as well that we're not clear with them about the fact that if you do this you will not only hurt yourself. You can possibly kill yourself in anybody in the airplane along with you. I

Incident: Wings AT72 at Ambon on Jul 3rd 2020, Failure of All Instruments

"A. Wings Eighteen, seventy, two or eighteen, seventy, two dash. Two, one to. At Ambon, which is in Indonesia was flying from Ambon to Babbo with forty nine passengers and three crew D my Indonesia accent. Yeah. I think you make an APP. I am was in the initial climb out of Ambon Putnam, Laura Airport's runway to just when just after becoming airborne all display units, standby instruments, communication and multifunction control display unit failed. All of it. The landing gear lever not good. No landing gear lever could not be retracted. Climbing through about two thousand feet the display units one and three partially recovered showing speed and altitude indications again, and about three thousand feet communication and remaining displaying its intermittently recovered and the landing gear retracted. They put their landing gear lever up and then finally goes. Okay. Yeah. Sure. You're up. You sure. It wasn't doing a Microsoft update or something might have been. So. I'm thinking. If this were instrument meteorological conditions. I believe we will be reading about the accident and terrible tragic crash of this flight however could easily be yeah without any insurance when you're going to do not ways up, right. Thankfully the weather was not quite as bad. I mean it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't IMC apparently. and they were able to maintain. Reference to the. Queues outside to keep the airplane flying straight and level and climbing all stuff aircraft stop the climate four thousand feet position for return to runway for about thirty minutes after departure but went around and enter to hold at seven thousand feet. The aircraft subsequently landed back on runway four, one hour fifty minutes past. Departure. In Asia Cayenne KT which I guess is there investigatory agency rated the occurrence a serious incident? Yeah. Open an investigation. There were no injuries and the aircraft sustained minor damage doesn't really say. How I can recall. Let's see. Then they go into a little bit more detailed by the way this is from the aviation. Excuse me. Aviation Herald. Let's see the weather during the situation was raining and the ground visibility was six kilometers. So you know wasn't. Great with not great. Let's see the. Starting process of the engines was normal when the aircraft taxied in lined up for runway to to. The aircraft took off and after airborne, the pilot verified the idol gate lever engaged I don't know what that is something to do with props. I guess suddenly all five display units and the integrated electronic standby instrument i. e s I went blank and the VHF radios burr off. the pilot glance to the overhead panel several lights eliminated. Consisting of the shed light on the D. C. Service utility busts, the available light on the external power push buttons. That problem they. Hit a great big generated. Along. With the we're just getting of course Pack lavatory detection engine boost. Hey we have a lavatory, we detected there. during the Situa- we just talked about that the pilot did not have flight instruments as reference for flight therefore, the pilot flew visually. about one minute. So everything came back and let's see why is it that they ended up holding for a while they run some checklist or something that the deal oh, I think he was waiting for the weather to improve. A bit before they came in for their landing. Yeah. Sensible. Relying, his attitude indicators. And other instruments. Yeah. Urinate Visual Reference Yeah. That was smart. So you know you'd think that was this the airplane that was kind of Pretty new or was that another one lows? Let's see Oh. August fourth twenty seventeen. Yeah. So it's Relatively, new airplane Not, sure. Exactly. What happened there some kind of electrical. Weirdness apparently yeah. I mean a supply problem but the thing that really concerns me as if you get a supply problem to you main instrument panels. Avis or whatever type of aircraft urine you would expect perhaps to lose some. But the one thing that should you should always bail rely on is you standby instruments they should be from a completely separate power sauce. Often. Just connected almost directly to the battery so that regardless of what else you've lost, you've got something to go on to help fly the airplane. the fact that he lost his signed by insurance as well. makes me seriously concerned about the architecture, the electrical system of of this aircraft. If, they find a full of manages to take out. So many buzzes by all buses that they also lose their same standby instruments that for me is a major concern. Yeah. I'm wondering if if that was something about the way, the electrical system was designed and manufactured or maybe. There was some kind of maintenance done to the airplane and they didn't connect all the bits and bobs correctly. I don't know I saw. The aircraft should be so capable on the ground before they get on something incorrect deep rooted of self diagnosing electrical problem If they wouldn't have got to have on, they had known that they had a major potential right room with their instruments. Sure. So this is just It happens. On a bus of had some problems in the pasta with unexpected glitches which have taken out all the display units but never have I heard of an Airbus having a problem with standby simultaneously that that is just nine national that is not supposed to happen. Ever. But did apparently in this case, and thankfully, the weather was good enough for them to maintain control their come. We had some pundits who had enough skill to bail to continue to fly the airplane the even relatively poor visibility with. Right around which meant horizon, the visual horizon would have been indistinct. They managed to interpret what was happening to the aircraft in their Themselves and not get fooled and not getting a situation where they lost control. So fantastic

California Creek Fire Zero Percent Contained, Chief Firefighter Says

"The People Fighting California's wildfires include our next guest chief. Chris Donnelly is spent twenty two years as a volunteer firefighter in Huntington Lake California. Good, morning sir. Good. Morning Steve. How are you this morning I'm okay. We've reported a lot on the sheer extent of the fires. How have you been spending your days where you are? Well we we began this this fight probably on Saturday morning about six am and what we did I was get all of our people out of Huntington Lake. Huntington has about probably five hundred and fifty summer cabins in an additional hundred and ten. Condominiums, we had thousands of people at Huntington and Once I had is on the fire, very clear to me that he was going to burn into Huntington and lives were at stake. So we spent most of the time getting people out. Well, I'm glad you've been able to do that. But of course, because of course, we have been following stories of some other resort areas, vacation areas where. There for the summer there for vacation there camping have had to be evacuated emergency ways. you said you got is on the fire can you describe the landscape the way it looks to somebody who's never been there and what the fire looked like. Yeah. Honey. Lake is quite unique word seven thousand feet, and we are the reservoir for a very large electric generation facility. That's two thousand feet below us. Virtually down a steep just just a cliff. and. So when I heard a sheriff's deputies go through our area to begin evacuations about five thirty in the morning on Saturday. I called our dispatch and and and they told me where the fire was. I drove down there about fifteen to twenty minutes away. And look down into the Canyon to about a thousand feet below us and saw flames and new as soon as the morning wins started upslope of Valley. That that was going to be a threat to Huntington. So I recommended that we do a mandatory evacuation at Huntington and began that vacuum evacuation about seven thirty. Our our teams, we we knew this was coming eventually with so much deadened down and the droughts over the years. And temperatures have been drier and well, it's been hotter and humidity's dryer. So said so much deadened down is this mostly forested area that we're talking about This heavy forest. Read for in white for as much as eight feet in diameter. And Bark Beetle infestations probably killed a third of that forest and Ecorse was. Caused by not not too much water much hotter temperatures in the last ten or fifteen years. and. So we have a lot of lot of fuel out there in the forest. You you focused a lot clearly on the evacuation is everybody out safely so far as you know from your area of responsibility. Absolutely. We made several passes through our small community. And we verified that everyone was gone, and then at that point, we had lots of strike teams which are groups of fire engines each. Totaling about thirty five engines by about two PM. At which time is started releasing our personnel to get their families and get out. So right now, the the only members of our fire department, our one company officer, which we will keep their throughout the battle. But it's simply not safe to be there. Well this helps to explain number that we've been hearing the past couple of days we're told this fire is zero percent contained. Is this a circumstance and of course, it's true of all wildfires to some extent circumstance where it's abundantly clear that the massive -ness of dead vegetation that you've described that the extreme dryness means that you really this is something that is beyond human control. At this point I think that's a that's a good statement. I don't know what the future of Huntington Lake is. But at this point to it does not look good. Has. The fire actually reached the the what had been the settled area of Huntington Lake. Yes. We have loss cabins of on the western end of the lake. All communications are down into the area I am not there at this moment. So it's very difficult to get serious information but about six PM last night, all crews were pulled out to about the middle of the lake. And we don't know if they re engaged or not. You said, all crews have been pulled out to the middle of the lake. Do you mean that they went out on the water? No. Okay this is copulated on the north side of the lake, and so a mid mid way on the shore you retreat retreated to a more defensible place is what you're saying. Thank you for much much better said, yes, Gotcha Gotcha I want people to know if they don't that you are as you describe it a brother in the Catholic church maybe a layman would think of you as a monk that is another thing that you do besides volunteer firefighting for twenty two years. How does that inform the way that you think about an event like this? Well you know I'm a teacher at Saint Mary's College and I've worked with kids since probably nineteen seventy. So it for me, it's all about caring people and touching hearts and. It's it's that center of people that I worry about the most you can rebuild cabins and you can go somewhere else but it's the people. So you know just a a little. Thirty second bit for you. Yesterday morning, I drove by a cabin and made a PA announcement directly to people about you need to get out now. Yesterday I called her and told her cabin was gone. And she shared with me that are great. Grandfather that cabin in one, thousand, nine, hundred, twenty. And her grandmother talked about the moments out playing in the woods and collecting pine cones and. As she broke into tears. I. Thought. How many stories like this am I going to be hearing? And how hurtful this all is. Income on their summer cabins, they gotTA someplace to go, but it's the hurt and the loss and. Tens of thousands of girl and boy scouts that. Were at Huntington. And Church camps and private Anson. There's so many lives. So many memories that probably won't be there in the future. So for me, that's what it's about. It's about the people. And all the all the loss. Donnelly thanks very much for your insights. I really appreciate it and we'll continue following the news to see if you begin to reach a point where you're able to battle back. Well, we'll look for that moment to. Two Angels Petite Sirah 2017

"This. Is Dave from. SHEEP WIND DOT COM. Come and again with another one. And this one is kind of an interesting one is this a? Ten dollar one. Or is it a twenty four, a gallery one? And the answer is depends on where you by. The. Angels. Petite Surat twenty seventeen, which I picked up at Costco. For Nine Ninety nine. You go elsewhere. Check the Internet out and it's selling for twenty, three, twenty, four, twenty, five. So it's like this is a ten dollar wine or is this the upscale wide? It's a petite derived from the Red Hills Aba in lake. County Lake County is due north of Napa Valley. And it's On the end of clear lake up there up about two thousand feet or more. From The Becker Mecca. Famous. Mountains I'm not quite sure where. But. It's high elevation, which is interesting. It's got You know the lakes helping things spot canucks soils. Really Cool. Groin area. It's one hundred percents. nine months in French Oh, twenty percent new. Is this deep dark rich bulbs, Bisi. Why it's kind of funny I'm drinking on a hot and sticky. August nights in the mood. A bit out of place but in about three weeks when it cools down at night. It's going to be just the wine you're looking for. And it's big bold. It's both silky smooth events ICS got tons of spies. Yeah And like I said, is this a one? There's this twenty, four dollar one. It's it's rich extracted. It's got a lot of flavors. Usually like the Tannin's and the acidity talk about that. But there's so much flavor they take back sheets everything that's going on. Off The teeth Sarah's kind of a weird grip kind of explain that a little bit. Back in the eighteen hundreds late eighteen hundreds, France at all sorts of problems with Pest and disease in vineyards, and when you're having problems with wine and France, it's a big problem. And the Sarah Grapes? Enron valley we're having some problems. So man named Europe. But Together With I think person? I'm it's a great that I think might be extinct nowadays or just almost never planet. To kind of create this hardy. Healthy. Sarai substitute. And by the time he did. The problems in the vineyard solved the no one wanted the. Ceron. Somehow showed up in Australia where it's called the roof. And California, and it wasn't a big wine from California until lately. It's everywhere. If you grab the Zinfandels, probably got some Petite Saran there and In other if you grab a red wine, it's the hidden member the. Used to. Flavor you. Come to expect. It always gives the wine a little bit of a boost unexpected boost. The teat psoriasis come into his own. This is a really, really nice petite up. that. If you feel like going upscale spend some money, well, you can go to any other store you want to. But if you want to spend ten bucks, go to COSCO and if you don't have a membership card, you talk to your neighbor does. Toss him twenty bucks or so and promise to share it with them. Drum breakdown. And you're in luck in I don't know what to say about this wine then it tastes great. Spice it's a big red wine. You like big boy red wines a big girl red I don't want to be. I don't WANNA be. The World's Highest-Dwelling Mammal Lives Atop a Volcano

"In twenty thirteen to mountaineers were nearing the top of Vulcan Judy Jayco a twenty two thousand foot tall volcano on the border of Chile and Argentina. When they saw something unexpected, just two thousand feet below the summit climbers spotted a mouse scurrying across the snow. It's really a remarkable citing his known expected wild mammals to be living at an elevation of over twenty thousand feet. At that elevations that the scarcity of oxygen oxygen that makes it really a challenging. Place to to survive in function. But then also just the extreme cold, it's an extremely inhospitable environment J. Starts and evolutionary biologist at the University of Nebraska. The climbers reached out to starts because he studies how animals adapt to high altitudes and he was so intrigued that he decided to make his own trip to survey the area starts and his colleagues spent a month that Jews Zhigo earlier this year where they confirmed with the climber saw they found mice everywhere including on the summit officially setting a new record for the world's highest dwelling. Mammal. Start says, the summit citing was fortuitous, his climbing partner Mario Perez, Mamani saw the mouse dive under a rock just starts made it to the top exhausted and groggy from the thin air. It took starts a minute together his wits, but he eventually managed to catch the mouse with his hands starts collected that mouse and others as museum specimens that will enable future scientific analysis. They also their encounter on video. The report is in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences now that he's home starts wants to understand how these mice can survive in such harsh conditions, and conversely what prevents other animals from venturing. So high clearly the the device that are living these extreme altitudes. Have physiological capacities that are very different from your typical rodent. He and his colleagues are comparing the genomes of the mice from Judea Jayco to their lowland relatives to see if they can identify the animals high altitude adaptations. He's curious whether they have evolved some of the same strategies as mice that live at high elevations, in north, America in the Himalayas. Starts also wants to know how mice are finding food on top of a barren rocky volcano thousands of feet above the highest green plants. On his next trip, he plans to analyze the stomach contents of the animals, the capture. It's really an open question to whether most species are whether they're elevation limit is set by physiological tolerance or just the lack of ecological opportunity. It's probably a combination of both whenever the answer starts suspects, there may be more high altitude animals out there than scientists thought, it's just a matter of climbing high enough to find them
