Fresh update on "twitter." discussed on The Breakdown with NLW
"By nyg and produced and distributed by coin desk. What's going on guys? It is Friday, October 15th, and if you have been alive and on Bitcoin Twitter at all in the last 24 hours, you know exactly what we are talking about. We're discussing whether Bitcoin is actually finally about to have an ETF. So we are on the precipice of a monumental moment for Bitcoin. Jill gunter, who is formerly Jill Carson, congrats on getting hitched friend, tweeted, is 2021 the year that all of the Bitcoin boy who cried wolf rumors actually come true. China actually banned it. The ETF may actually get approved. Matt Hogan, the chief investment officer at bitwise in an appearance on coin desk's first mover today said that we've had a series of zero to one moments for Bitcoin over the last year. That was before and after Paul Tudor Jones and his great monetary inflation thesis. Before and after Michael saler and micro strategy put Bitcoin on the balance sheet. Before and after El Salvador made Bitcoin legal tender. And now, before and after the approval of a Bitcoin ETF. Or at least a Bitcoin futures ETF. Let's dig into what this actually means why it matters where there might be skepticism and everything else you need to know. First of all, WTF is an ETF. An ETF or exchange traded fund is a type of security that tracks other assets, but is bought and sold on a stock market just like a stock. Basically ETFs combine the simplicity of buying and selling stocks with the ability to invest against any type of thesis or category. SPY is the S&P 500 ETF, for example, that tracks the S&P 500 Index, and thus is a super easy way to get overall exposure to the whole stock market with one single trade. If you listen to this show a lot, I'm sure you're familiar with Kathy Woods arc and their series of ETFs that track specific feces, including innovation broadly as well as subcategories of innovation like health AI, robotics, et cetera. You can also, however, have ETFs that track commodities, like gold. The benefits of ETFs is their simplicity. The fact that they can be traded just like stocks.
California's Regulation on Truck Emissions Shuts out Private Owner-Operators
"Twitter user Jerry Oakley reminds us that carriers domiciled in California with trucks older than 2011 That's just ten years Or using engines manufactured before 2010 just 11 years We'll need to meet the board's new truck and bus regulation beginning in 2020 Otherwise their vehicles will be blocked from registration with the states DMV according to California law Well ladies and gentlemen that's the situation It's 2021 Beyond 2020 the requirement is to purchase electric trucks Which do not exist Sundance a conservative treehouse expands on this explaining that the EPA reached an agreement with California air resource board to shut down semi tractor rigs that were non compliant with new California mission standards in effect what this 2020 determination and settlement created was an inability of half the nation's truckers Half the nation's trackers from picking up anything from the port of LA or the port of Long Beach Virtually all private owner operator trucks and half the fleet trucks that are used for moving containers across the nation were shut out

Charlie and again congrats on your success by their happy for thank you thank you very much and you have a new chapter to your vouch. Ian book some would call it a booster shot. Is that right yes. It's called faustian. Ian booster and it just came out Yesterday in fact and the goal is to help equip people to push back on vaccine mandates. We go into a lot of data. We look at this strictly from a medical ethics in a scientific ethical perspective. Because we don't frankly think that the people making these decisions will be moved by constitutionality at all. They do the constitution. Something to a race run over undo so we try to appeal to something more hippocratic more directly judeo christian. We appealed to the nuremberg code. Which came out after world. War two in response to Using humans as test subjects to try to reset. What he you know. Medical and scientific experimental ethics look like and a lot of the data that we use charlie. I thought it was funny. I had some Spirit of the age lefties combat me on twitter this morning wondering if i had quoted a bunch of people that had just been baying on youtube now that that means anything anymore but a lot of these names. I'd never even heard of no. I didn't quote any of them. I actually use almost exclusively. Cdc in who data in this chapter so it's available right now for digital download. It's only a couple of bucks. I'm gonna make like forty cents a copy. This is really just about getting this information to people as many as we can to push back on these vaccine
MIT Cancels Geophysicist's Lecture After Woke 'Twitter Mob' Outrage
"Okay. Mit and i'm speaking about the corruption and the cowardice of the entire university world. Virtually the entire is very disconcerting. All these all the education has produced cowards. Mit is the latest example. They cancelled a distinguished scientists lecture because he's against diversity equity inclusion departments department chair rob van van der hilst did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the college fix. Which were reading this. From kimberley allen spokesman for mit told the fix via email. The electric quote will not be held this year at the discretion of the department. That's helpful. that's exactly what we knew. Allan said abbott may still present. His work informally to his colleagues at mit at a future. Date abbott said. He does not want people to go after those who got a speech cancel well. I'm sorry professor abbott. I am if you don't fight bad. People weak and weak and bad are also synonymous through these sweet people. In many cases fine neighbors good parents. All that stuff in how many people like that have unharmed. Societies cowardice always leads to evil. I forgive the activists who led the campaign against me. gowdy sounds like christ. It's christ like thing. He forgives them. Why does he forgive them. By the way it's an interesting question. Would jesus have forgiven them. You have canceled free speech at mit. And i forgive you. I don't think jesus would have. But it's an interesting question because the harm. Yes i i know jesus on the cross of course. I'm well aware. Forgive them father. They know not what they do but they were. They were hurting him. The people who canceled this professor's lecture are hurting the country
The Real Reason Katie Hopkins Was Banned From Twitter
"I'm talking to katie hopkins katie. You're british journalist. You're the most banned woman on the planet. I was asking you earlier. What is it. I want you to be honest. Because if are asking this to anne coulter who's a dear friend she would never admit it's kinda like donald trump would never admit like yes. Maybe i shouldn't have said this. She doubles down. My guess is you're probably similar that you wouldn't say yeah. Maybe i shouldn't have said. I think it's similar that the differences i would say people always say oh. What was it that banned from. Just pick something twitter and you can't answer it because it isn't one thing because there's never a thing it's just that your voice becomes too powerful. Your audience becomes too big so at the point that i had my own column on met online. I was on tucker three or four times a week. I had my own radio show. You become too big okay. To tell the truth. This is beautiful. This is beautiful. Because i was wondering i was saying you on the break. I was this program. Which is i would think pretty anodyne. This is not like we're not fire-breathing you know and we were completely wiped off of youtube like just two hundred twenty thousand subscribers which is not monstrous but for us it's extraordinary and just completely wiped out the whole show and i think the final straw was we. We had naomi wolf on. She's was talking about vaccine passports. And i thought naomi wolf is a feminist. She's very liberal. She was in my class at yale. Just completely different in most ways but on this an amazing. She's been a hero because of that. I mean that was the final score but they had other reasons. But you said you think that the real calculation they're making is that you scare them become too. It isn't ever people will say. Why did they take off youtube. And actually i want to say it's an ignorant question but it's not the right question because the only answer is you become too big and your voice becomes to heard of things you're simply not allowed to

Facebook, Instagram Down for Hours After Whistleblower Goes Public. Coincidence?
"This is really interesting. How facebook goes down again. You might be listening to this at some point as we post all these things and everything might be solved with this but the fact that facebook goes down for as long as telegrams having issues. Twitter's having issues. It's bizarre but it's also on the same day that the facebook whistle francis haagen or twenty. Four hour news cycle says that facebook is realized that they changed the algorithm to be safer people spend less time on the site the click less and they make less money now understand. This whole whistle blower thing is a fake psychological operation to try to justify more government censorship over the internet. It is an attack from the left to say that facebook is not doing enough to censor voices like ours. play cut twelve. It's easier to inspire people to anger and it is to other emotions. Misinformation angry contents is enticing to people. Entertaining keeps them on the platform. Yes facebook has realized that if they change the algorithm to be safer people will spend less time on the site the click unless ads. They'll make less money and so she's trying to make the argument that facebook's entire business model is around promoting and monitoring hate now. Interestingly facebook is totally down telegrams having massive issues back yeah. My telegram right here is not even loading interesting. How that works. So there's something going on right now. That is multi institutional so this facebook whistle blower comes out and starts to complain about all of this and we are now experiencing problems on facebook on twitter instagram. Snapchat to talk as someone is some state actor attacking every single major social media and communication company. Right now where we prepared for this.

Should the Climate Movement Embrace Sabotage?
"So Gerald byer who's a right leaning guy I'm not particularly friendly I don't really know him that well But he noticed that there was this article up in The New Yorker Should the climate movement embrace sabotage Apparently this was an actual article up at The New Yorker Should the climate movement embrace sabotage The core of the article the court tenant was that left this should consider environmental sabotage of pipelines bombing pipelines and whatever as a reasonable means to stop energy production in the United States ladies and gentlemen this is The New Yorker So buyer put out on his Twitter feed He put this gas commentator literally calls for blowing up pipelines not a metaphor The New Yorker again he says literally platforming a terrorist Now this is nothing unusual I mean of course the left is in love with violence They have been in love with violence for a very long time But what I found unusual about this is I went down and started scrolling through the comments Folks I could not find one left this comment on this thing from a leftist That was condemning this thing outright I couldn't maybe it's there I didn't scroll through the whole thing to be fair There were quite a few comments on Gerald's tweet But the ones I scored here's just a screenshot It's taken from my phone I got it right here Of just like the top ten I saw These are leftist responses to bombings and environmental actual and not figurative not metaphoric Actual environmental terrorism that could get people killed and disrupt the entire energy industry in the United States One person commented what oil companies do to get their pipelines is terrorism Sabotaging them is self defense

Why is Fortnite banned from Apple?
"More rumblings in the battle between games an apple over fortnight and the app store the ceo and founder of epic games said recently on twitter that fortnight will continue to be blacklisted. From apple's app store a tim sweeney. Who is the founder and ceo of the company Shared some of this information through his twitter account. According to him for night will continue to be barred from the app store until the conclusion of the appeals process in the company's lawsuit against apple according to emails that sweeney released through twitter apple has said that epic games committed a breach-of-contract and trust when it implemented an option for app related purchases outside of apple system if you recall A lot of this started because fortnight epa games rather the creators. A fortnight added a system within the game so that folks could buy v box. Which is the in game currency and they could do it within the game without having to use the app store. Obviously that upset apple apple ban them from the app store ended up removing them completely. Epic followed up with a lawsuit and this is where we are According to an email that sweeney released from who what appears to be an apple representative it says quote apple as exercises discretion not to reinstate epochs developer program account at this time and quote representatives from apple declined to comment now earlier. This month. we had a big Moment in the case where federal judge said apple must let developers use payment options that funnel consumers out of the tech giant's app store which would then bypass apples thirty percent commission on a lot of transactions. Epic has appealed the ruling though because the district judge in the case rejected the company's allegations that apple random monopoly. So what is this gonna eventually mean for. Users will no more obviously wants. This appeals process shakes out as far how apt transactions. At purchases will go. We could see a lot of things like a link within an app. That takes you to maybe a safari page or some of the browser. And then you can pay there as well. That doesn't mean that apps are users couldn't still use the option to go through the app store to make their purchases but it might change a little bit How that process works. It could also mean to as an incentive for people to click that link they may be paying
The Hunter Biden E-Mail Coverup Is the Clearest Evidence Yet of Media Corruption
"Im in houston texas about three hours away near the campus of a very very left wing. University of texas in austin is our friend. Katie mcfarland former deputy national security adviser. She's in the lone star state to talking forget. Her book is revolution trump washington. We the people all right. Kt there's a lot to cover today. You ready ready to buckle up. I'm reading all right story out. Hunter biden emails. They looked to be authentic Legit i guess for two million dollars you could have hunter biden moolah as people trying to unfreeze freeze libyan assets. This is very dangerous. The white house is for sale. We know that. Kim your take on that and then what other black males floating around around there. Yeah i'm not surprised at this story. I think a lotta people for a long time. If now that the biden inc was a pay to play scheme whether it was with ukraine weather was with russians whether it was you know chinese anybody. That was the way you got access to. Joe biden vice-president and probably way to get access to him as president is to pay the family to get married. Get something what has always upset me about. This is why the media crush the story so the new york post had. The story had a laptop have the emails and in trying to report it the rest of the media crush them in fact the social media twitter banned the new york post the oldest newspaper in the united states banned them for their having a story that was critical of joe biden during the presidential campaign so to me. It's a bigger problem than just corruption. The white house. It's it's corruption the media you know the watchdog. We're not watching. In fact they were actively working on the other
Grassley Will Run for 8th Term in Senate
"The other bit of breaking news. Is that your colleague. Chuck grassley with whom you serve at. The age of eighty eight has announced. He's running for re election. And i for one. I'm glad you know pete. Wilson's eighty eight. We are honoring and last night on the thirtieth anniversary of his first year. As governor of california. Those two eighty eight year olds. Put us to shame. Jim talent they do. And i'm gonna tell you they're they're like chuck is is what we lawyers call. And you know this. Better than i do sue generis. Yes so i mean he is every time i see chuck. It's like the same chuck grassley i. I met twenty seven years ago when i got elected to the house. i saw in and And then i served with fifteen years ago. The guy's incredible he doesn't incredible job For iowa and more power to them. And i wouldn't say that normally i mean normally i would quietly. Somebody asked me say you know you'd be thinking he's unbelievable that there's always an exception the rule my role is you shouldn't be in the senate after your seventy two. The john kyle rule chuck grassley the exception because he is one of. I love the history channel rants on twitter right. I love that stuff. But he also takes care of iowa and when he We're gonna be talking about this when he decides to run at ninety four as well. By the way he'll make his eighty eight county drive. He works at very hardy. Takes care of iowa for joni ernst. Can't keep up with them. But like pete wilson. Were drinking the water differently when they made those two jim talent. I asked pete wilson last night. What makes a great senator. So i want to ask you chuck grassley. What makes a great senator. The the most important prerequisite is to have the heart of a servant. Okay and chuck. Does in pete wilson. Does i mean you've got you. You have to be another really important thing goes with that is to have a dose of humble understand and and and they both do.
Biden slips into political quicksand amid Haitian migrant buildup
"Starting off the show. Tonight we have a discussion about joe biden. Apparently he's doing more deportations than trump specifically deporting more asylum seekers than trump did well. Yeah we don't have the other categories of deportations as the numbers that That we came across. And it's a shocking number. I don't know the entire number. But i have here the us Moved over six thousand. Haitian asylum-seekers from the border at del rio so that's just haitian asylum-seekers just recently with you know the whip's did see that. Oh i saw that very scary stuff. There was ice agents. I guess they're ice. Sported patrol agents. Scroll on horseback whipping people catalyst. Yeah like cadillac. Wrangling them with whips and hitting them with the long whip. It looked incredibly frightening and in and scary to be in that situation with a bunch of armed men on horses attacking people who are just trying to escape the hellish life of living in haiti. And do you think the biden voters expected this to happen because the people on the left like biden love to position themselves as the friend of the immigrants they acted like trump was the worst for immigration and right immigration. I mean right. When joe biden got elected like somebody. I know got a deportation letter. Just and they're telling him oh. It's been a lot worse recently under biden. They told him that his friends sorry like his friends. That like is also a legal immigrant. Types may know some other people like that well according to the same place that you're looking here. It's says twitter account. Aj plus they're citing cnbc saying that biden is using what's called title forty two to expel asylum-seekers without a right to a hearing so you know what asylum is right. Yeah when you leave somewhere that is you're gonna die there or they're gonna put you in prison for the rest of your life or thereafter you for for whatever reason and the numbers here are just shocking. According to cnbc under trump and remember trump had four full years. And we're not even through year number one biden four hundred and forty th over four hundred. Forty thousand people were Were expelled under this title. Forty two during the trump administration and six hundred ninety thousand have been expelled under the biden administration under title forty two so that's a tremendous level of increase because if if biden is able to keep up the same amount over the next three years. Yeah he'd be like twenty four hundred weight. It was six hundred ninety thousand right now so yeah that'd be well over two million people well so you know that is just absolutely horrifying because these people if they are indeed being prosecuted or persecuted. They're going to be sent back to likely their deaths or likely to a prison cell. Yeah it's probably worse for you if you try to leave and then they find out about that absolutely it is. Let's see there's other story here from cnbc biden. Administration appeals judges order. This is from less than a week ago to stop. Expelling migrants under trump era pandemic policies. So there was a judge who said they need to stop using title forty. Two and biden is appealing so this is yet another example of how joe biden is more like trumpy than the trump haters thought. That trump was like people hated trump for all these different reasons and biden has continued trump's policies and crank them up. Yeah my friend. Sent me this weird video of biden today. It was him when he was younger. You know he. He's always been in government office. So i don't know what his title was at the time but he was being interviewed. Probably a senator or something. Yeah and he was saying he was saying. What do people think. I care more about bosnia than haiti because it's white people in bosnia and it's you know black people in haiti and then he just went on and said well if haiti sank into the ocean. I wouldn't care just like that was his answer to that was like what is that supposed to mean. Well i'll tell you clear what it means. It means he has no empathy right to say that about another an entire group of people living somewhere on the planet to say they just if they just all died one day he would have no concern whatsoever for that and you juxtapose that against what he says while he's running for office which is to make himself seem like this all caring. Oh the democrats we care about people that's clearly. Bs tel aviv From penn and teller thought he was going to heal us all with his love. Is that what taylor said. Y- you read that on the show. It was numbered teller's lider new saying let pendulum but tell her was going along with pen from what i could see. So presumably teller didn't disagree otherwise he wouldn't have been in the photo op. Yeah just mixed them up. Sorry according to the story here. Cnbc biden administration appealing. A judge's order to stop using a trump era pandemic policy that allows for the rapid expulsion of migrants without giving them a chance to apply for asylum. So they're using covert as the excuse. The departments for his just cove it. That's why we had to have horseback riders with the because of it. It's just you covered. The department of justice filed an appeal of district. Judge emmet sullivan's ruling thursday bars. The federal government from expelling migrants under the public health law known as title. Forty two sullivan. The ruling to go into effect in fourteen days the appeal is the latest move by the bided administration to address the twenty year high surge of migrants from mexico and central america crossing the border illegally which remains a political flashpoint between republicans and progressive democrats title forty two is first introduced by donald trump in march of twenty twenty over concerns about the corona virus pandemic. It gave the government the power to turn back any migrant caught crossing the border illegally regardless of their country of origin to supposedly stop cove nineteen. So if you had managed to escape from north korea and you made it to the united states which is no easy task. Mind you. it's one thing to get here from haiti or guatemala. Or duress or something. It's a whole other story to get here from north korea. But if he'd managed to and they caught. You did it cover. Nineteen you gotta go back to north korea and you back to north korea where you would certainly either be put into a hellish prison labor camp and then of course all your family members have probably already been put into a prison labor camp. Because that's what they that's how they roll over north korea. If you try to escape or you do something bad. They punish your whole family for it. So you know you're going to prison and it's going to be like the worst possible prison labor camp experience basically on the planet right now if they don't just go right ahead and just summarily execute you but this quote from a man at the border a haitian man with two children. "They had an application process back in june and actually people can still apply and be on the weightless but what you can do is apply to be able to use this feature. I've only seen like maybe one person offered this and they can pick a ticket price. They pay me tickets. They can sell so kind of if they wanna limit. How many people are are in the room. And i've heard great things about so far but is not that many people that have access yet so until we see a bigger rollout. I think most of us are not going to really see this Talk much about it yet. But i'm excited. I think it's a great feature. Might think because so many people are using spaces. Now how great would it be to now. Offer a ticketed space in maybe go that step further offer offer masterclass through spaces where you know you get paid for it. Yeah i think that the applications are fascinating rights so imagine exclusive content for pain customers where there could be alive. Qna with maybe industry celebrity or something like that. It sounds like it's right now. It's only ios and super limited. But i'm sure they're going to roll that out so i have to keep our eyes on that now. I guess you can also integrate with calendar stuff for twitter spaces so talk to us a little bit about that and what that makes possible. Yes twitter's been talking about this for a while now and i'd seen some mockups. I was thinking. This is such a great idea if you're promoting your spaces rooms and want more people. They are because the hard part is getting people to the room. And i schedule lots of rooms. Plenty of other marketers are doing that as well. But there isn't in-app reminder. You can get if you said it but how much better is now to be able to let people connect us to their google calendar apple calendar. And i've already experimented with as i love it. This is such a great feature. What i've noticed with. This is if i see scheduled room. I'm on ios but my understanding is for both ios and android now. So when you see a room scheduled in you go to set reminder. It should show you should see now. There's been a few times. Where didn't and i wasn't quite sure why they have updated the app several times in the past week or so so it could have been that you know you still need to make sure you always have the most recent out download on your phone but i think this is gonna be great for getting more people into scheduled rooms yes on. I'm guessing it just gives you the option attitu- to your apple or google calendar and then when it pops up on your calendar you click and it takes right on the twitter outright enrolling. Does it literally as soon as i use google calendar so when i see that option a tap on on my phone it literally opens up my google calendar from iphone. Perfect just like if you would anywhere else online. Yes a great feature. I love that twitter topic tags. That sounds like a tongue twister. But what the heck are twitter topic tags for spaces like talk to us about that. What does this mean yes so. Twitter has a feature that is very underutilized. That most people don't use this call topic so we can add different topics of interest so that our twitter feed is more full with things that are important to us is really just a crazy number of topics when it first launched. I think it's about a year and a half ago..

"Madeleine how you doing today. I'm doing great mike. Thanks for having me back again to talk more things twitter. It's exciting yeah. We've got a lot to talk about today so we're going to start out with twitter spaces because there's been a lot of updates so first of all it sounds like you can now have co hosts in twitter spaces. Can you kind of explain how that works. What the limitations are and maybe what they can and cannot do as super exciting. They finally added this feature. Mike me as well as many other room requesting this for a very very long time. I host three rooms every week. And they all have co host like. I don't do it by myself. I have a co host free trim. So now i don't have the burden of managing the room on just me. My co host can now help me so you could. Here's what's really great. So before this feature you have one house and up to ten speaker so eleven people total now is one host up to co host and you can still have ten speakers so you can have a total of thirteen max whereas before it was eleven and was great about having co host is that they can help you manage moderate the room they can invite speakers they can get them on the mike real quickly for because you know what i'm hosting these by myself it is hard to try to juggle it all and they can also send someone out. They commute them. School is so nice now to finally have this feature is huge. I would imagine if for whatever reason like you're on twitter space and you get a phone call or something they could take over. Couldn't they or something happens to your internet. Could that happen well. So here's the thing so it's not like clem house rican hand off. Unfortunately i hope they do get it to be that way at some point mike because there have been times or i've hosted or someone else is hosting and maybe your internet cuts out or your phone freezes up..

"Remember fleets feature available on twitter peg to piggyback off. The success of apps like snapchat by allowing users to share text updates photos video. Whatever they wanted that then disappeared in twenty four hours while it's gone. It's no more on wednesday twitter bid farewell to fleets due to the lack of new user engagement. You could say it's time on twitter was fleeting. I mean i'm a dad. I had to put a dad joke in there. I'm sorry a twitter. I rolled out the feature last november and as of last month twitter confirmed it was shutting it down now it was originally launched in an effort to attract new users to the platform who did have an interest in tweeting. What happened though was it was mostly used by regular twitter users. Who were already tweeting. Because they wanted to amplify their own tweets and talk with other people that are using twitter all the time. Eliot brown twitter set a product said in a blog post the social media platform will attempt to incorporate features from the composer that was used to create fleets such as the full screen camera. Text formatting options and gift stickers. This is actually something they've done before. Twitter has shut down big Things that they've added to the platform and then incorporated them into the broader picture. Later down the road for example when twitter dial back it's twitter moments feature that offered quote curated stories about what's happening around the world and quote. They ended up updating it and then they turned it into the export tap which you can use to see kind of what's going on in the twitter verse. There was also periscope the live video streaming app that shut down in march. But it's also a part of twitter's overall functionality. And you know it's obviously interesting to see twitter and all these other platforms experimenting with different features. It's also interesting to how snapchat has really been this big influence on a lot of the platforms out there. Remember stories snapchat stores were big thing and then every single app out there. One of their own stories feature facebook added it instagram at it. It's been very successful on instagram. You know we've seen twitter experiment with it obviously And tick tock now is kind of the new hot thing. We're seeing other Absence services kind of try to mimic what they do So that part's always fascinating. But i really am curious. What twitter does with these features and fleets in how it incorporates it. And that's obviously something we'll see over time What happens

"That you know. It's not called black twitter. I follow black folks on twitter. It's just called twitter for me right. So this is something coming up in conversations with people. I spoke with right like we didn't. They didn't call it black twitter. It was everybody that was outside of black twitter calling it black twitter and said what what's going on over there but i think over time vincent people embrace the name especially around twenty thirteen two thousand fourteen when the platform. There's like shit a small ship in the platform on what it's being used for. But i mean as with all things that you know. Black folks are online and the idea of blackness and black culture at eventually sort of gift. Just co-option becomes this other thing but i think black folks eventually over time. They embraced it and just kind of ran with it. And we'll talk about that shift in a minute because that's that's really interesting One of the people you talk to in your story talks about the early days of black twitter and just being like a hang right. It was a porch space. It was a place that you just went to like talk about jokes and maybe talk about celebrity news or something But it wasn't like they weren't the center of the conversation and then at some point it switch from a porch to a stage like you didn't just go there and hang out with your friends. You went there to be heard. You went through to say something that that you and you knew that it would be amplified. Yeah i think eventually a lot of people early on singer reminded them college and reminded them of a quad space right. Select an early days of twitter early so black twitter which two thousand eighteen thousand nine two thousand ten maybe up to two thousand thousand twelve. You have this. Very specific millennial set of people who are maybe ending highest score in in the early days of.

"Instagram stories. So when one tap illegally opens up your instagram stories in takes that tweet and places it right on the screen and you're ready to share it in stories. I love is easy. Try i played around with. It is really great. Does it look nice. Because you're right. It is not easy to put it into a story because the shape of it and everything right exactly that too. So yeah i mean i think this has been a great change. You know both over the years these platforms. Don't like playing nice with each other. It is is really to our debt. is like i mean people are going to sit here and take the screen shots is a lot of work doing this so they take in all of that out of the picture. Now just one tap your in and of course you can dress up more once you get in there if you want but it literally opens up your instagram stories in places at right on top this next one's kinda crazy more like a commentary on this right twitter's thinking about allowing you to only tweet to your friends this facebook. You know how you can post to facebook and say only friends. Public versus private kind of thing doesn't seem to be something that just totally against the open nature of twitter. What's your thoughts on this. Yes absolutely i mean. Twitter is all about public discussion and connecting with people all over. And if you're limited. I mean you can have your twitter account protected tweets or protected so only people that you allow in can see it but i always tell people what's the point of that especially as a marketer you you want to be able to tweet out to the world for kids. I can understand it right right right. They're thinking is that there might be some people that you know. They're juggling different kinds of content and some of it. They don't want it to be for everyone. You like on this stories how you can have it. Go out to just a group of friends. So i think they want to experiment to see. I don't see at work in personally. I don't see it being viable. But you know i give them kudos for wanting to try different things and having that dialogue appear things we're testing and see if it works fifteen second video ads. It sounds like are now available on twitter. Where would these show up like. How would this work helped me understand. This is a new thing. "Knowledge. Is it yes. It's part of the twitter app my understanding. Is he still in beta or the twitter app. Yes i mean if you have at least six hundred all hours you can host your own rooms. But if you don't have the six hundred followers anyone can go join in any room. That's going on at any time as a listener and you can be invited to be a speaker in a room. You just can't host okay. You have at least six hundred followers. All right we're going to move along here. Just quick announcement here. That twitter spaces is also allowing ticketed spaces which we don't really need to talk about but that's obviously going to enable you to sell tickets to exclusive experiences. I wanna talk about twitter. Blue real briefly and then i really wanted to get in to fleets so twitter blue is now officially rolled out but not everywhere. So where is it rolled out. And how does it work again. Just brief overview is been put out to australian candor right now because they're still testing it's a subscription service so for a fee twitter saying we'll give you extra features will let you do some extra things that you can't do at with a free account so they're trying this out to see if people are interested So what are the features being able to organize your bookmarks so bookmarks as a future where you can bookmark in each tweet whether your mobile or desktop a great feature and now they have like these folders so you can categorize them and make it easier. I don't think people are going to do it just for that. Because i don't even know very many people. That is a bookmark like crazy. But a lot of people i know. Tell me i don't use it. I didn't even know. I have that feature. There's an undue tweet features not edit tweet feature but they're calling undo or basically when you're doing a tweet composing tweet. There's this timer in there. That gives you different from what i've seen in these mockups of it were the max is thirty seconds but you have to on the front end pick timeframe.

"Below that it'll show you what they consider our top rooms and i imagine there's an algorithm at play here this just choosing popular rooms at any given moment so it's not necessarily anyone you follow just these random rooms. I'm hoping at some point. Might they connect that to the topics. Feature topics is a great feature. They don't talk about it much but it's a way to pick different things you see in your feed on twitter just based by different types of topics. We've discussed it on the show before. I will love them for to take that information and apply that when you're trying to discover new runs because how cool would it be if one of the things you put in topics is maybe bitcoin. Maybe something. you're interested right now or marketing. Social media marketing that things that relate to that which show up and be easy to discover in spaces. Sarah quick just so i understand. Once this rules out to everybody on twitter they'll be a new icon. That shows up in the bottom. What does it look like the top of your head. that's correct. yeah they're low icon. Which are these little little little triangular dot kind of thing. Exactly when you click on that what do you see. Do you see what looks like a bunch of tweets or did you see like a little bunch of rooms are what are they are spaces. Bunch of rooms is very pleasing to look at because it's a nice nice looking screen is just part of your twitter experience where two shows all these different rooms instead of at the top bar where you see fleets and spaces all jumbled together and you have to scroll across this. This is a vertical. Scroll which is what we're also used to doing so it makes it a little bit easier to scroll through and look to see what's going on and the beauty as you can always tap on any room you see and it doesn't fully opened up. It just opens up enough re conc- loose hosting who's speaking. How many people are there. Was the topic. Even though it shows you part of that in this discover ability tap. It shows you more once you open it but does not mean you're automatically listening and they see you got you have to do another tap to actually join in. Listen so recordings. Is this now available on all rooms or is this also just available to some people at this point just for host host room spaces first of all. There's a way to go access your data on twitter. Another little known thing that people don't really talk about on twitter. Bet you can go into your settings and privacy section and get to your data in there through the account and then your data and you can download all your data on twitter and what. They're doing now. Because i think a lot of us. We've all been saying to twitter. We like to be able to have a recording of our rooms now..

Pm eastern welcome back to the show madeline. Hey mike thanks for having me back. Love coming on and talking about twitter. Well we've got a lot to talk about today. We're going to get to twitter. Fleets in a bit. But we're going to start by opening up with twitter spaces for those. That don't know what twitter spaces is is like clubhouse it's the social audio platform and since you've been on the show which is i think about a month and a half ago. There's been a lot of upgrades if you will to twitter spaces so before we talk about what that is. Why don't you i talk about. What is the application for twitter spaces. Tell us how you're using twitter spaces. Oh twitter spaces. As i think it's just become a really a game changer. Just because is incorporated into the twitter. App is not a standalone app. Like some of the others and it's been a great way to really connect and enhance your conversations with people. I used to always say to people that were saying to me. Like you know twitter. You know. I don't really connect with people is not that great for me. I would say go to a twitter chat and you'll change your mind very quickly because the great way to connect with like minded people now. I've added twitter spaces to that conversation because twitter spaces is such a great way to connect with so many people that you wanna be talking to whether you're hosting room yourself or you're just listening or even participating in speaking in a room because just like the other social audio platforms you can see who all is there and you can just be a passive listener and still be connecting with lots of new people who are following every single person in the room and maybe even deeming them and talking to them. So i think it is about time that we've got social audio added to twitter. Super excited talk about it. Yeah in my opinion you know clubhouse kinda started this craziness in twitter is the next big one does are really the only two that i consider very viable options right now..

"On the board in the western conference finals. Paul georgia twenty seven fifteen in eight as the clips. Beat the suns in game. Three last night at staples. Patrick beverley played a strong defensive game on. Broken nose devon booker. Perhaps rusty chris. Paul frank clippers win. Make you see this series differently. If they could win game game four. I'll feel a lot differently. I give paul george a lot of credit because didn't shoot well but he's still made an impact on the game but we know this came down to chris. Paul and devon booker shooting a combined. Ten for forty. If you tell me they're going to do it in the next game then. Things are really going to get interesting but give tyler a lot of credit made in In series adjustments put a smaller quicker team out on the court. They did a really good job defensively. Who knows your guy chris. Paul was out a long time. Maybe that'll impact him devon booker. You can tell. I give him credit. He did not used broken nose as an excuse but there are times during the game michael. He's moving the mask. Wild play is going on with them in in game three. We'll see if it affects them in game for frank. I completely agree with all that analysis. Chris paul we figure it was gonna be rusty. Jeff van gundy said and he called it to the t- he said early is chris. Paul's chris paul later yes series but not probably tonight meaning last night. One hundred percent aced that piece of piece of analysis and booker. You know it's interesting. Because richard hamilton told them. You can't take this thing off on the bench you gotta use. Well he at one game to get used to a nice gonna practice today with that with on and he'll go through warm ups and be more accustomed to wearing it tomorrow. But but listen t lou a guy who may be the most underrated coach in professional basketball. He can get these teams ready. Kenny not are you talking about making adjustments people of course gone overboard now as star compared to bill parcells another one. I'm not bill parcells. I'm sorry to the to the other hoodie coach in new england. And so they're comparing him to to to build check. People can go crazy but who knows how to get a team ready frank. The clippers are tough tough physically and tough minded. And paul george put those to miss free throws behind him at least with that one game and he played a really really really good game last night. Yes i think. It's a different series. Remember the clippers should probably based on the way game to played out be up to one series and game. One was a two point. Game before booker slipped free on an imbalanced pass and got a dunk at the end of that game. So i mean the clippers have been right there for this entire series so far. Yeah that's to me. What was so impressive. You had that devastating loss in game. Two all paul george. Just make one free throw. And maybe you have a chance. So he misses both free throws and then the way that they defended that play the valley oop is a call and we also your reaction to it that is a crushing crushing loss. But they've been resilient group they were down to dallas. They were down two in the second round in utah. They find a way to get it done but to do it without kawhi. Leonard is not going to be easy if they could somehow somehow some way get three more wins in this series that is going to be as impressive as a run as you can get for a team. That doesn't have its best player. Michael they showed him on. Tv last night. He's sitting up in a luxury suite. They need him in uniform. And as you know they're probably not gonna get them no no doubt series of they didn't seem to be in the cards and by the way that is ultimately. What would change the narrative on paul. George yeah that is it. If you play without your best player and paul george becomes your best player. It helps rally that team and they got to the finals. That's i don't care what you did with. Ms free throws that changes if you could somehow advance a long way from that but this series is just one night after night becomes compelling an additional reason. That's why you need to win less by the way with beverley guarding him. You have devin. Book is four for fifteen and the last two games. Ten thirty five. I think chris. Paul devon booker will shoot better but at this continues you know what. Maybe the clippers actually have a chance. All right we have an intergenerational bad blood in the nba. How about this scottie. Pippen told that kevin durant didn't know how to play team basketball in the nets series loss to the bucks. He ended that lebron would have found a way to win. Durant of course responded on twitter. Saying didn't the great scottie. Pippen refused to go in a game for a last second shot because he was in his feelings when his co. chew up a play for a better shooter. All right michael who you backing in this beef. Neither not getting into this frank one. I'm too old to. I know kevin durant a little bit. Given of course is a star civically in my adopted hometown of of greater washington. Dc dmv Scottie pippin i have known longer and better. And he's the most to me the most underrated player in basketball in my lifetime. And maybe forever scottie. Pippen so i'm not getting into this. In some ways. I was around kevin some when he was younger and he has got it reminded me of each other and that they were both really shy and sort of grew out of that show. We can see we know scott has for a long time Kevin did to these these these social media things understand all the time and i like it. Enjoy both of them. I've worked with scotty. I'm still going to work with scottie. Scottie has said these things in this building in the studio. Which is where i wish. Instead these things they come off differently than if you do it to a magazine writer. And then kevin to social media. I'm not going to be drawn. "Enjoy. I'm told by marketing, we should be encouraging you to grab their Fernan, stole it for them. I think it's a bit aggressive. But if you think you've got that kind of relationship eyesight guy forward, I today big changes to Twitter. Well, big changes. Find out what happens when you open up Twitter at the moment is you get something that sort of like it's a mixture of things that just happened, and there's a mixture of tweets that it rises to the top because he thinks you came about according to an algorithm, very similar to what Facebook does, but Jeremy cook is changing has changed really. So Twitter's kind of listen to people who follow. It very closely allowed you to do have completely chronological timeline. So this is where you actually just see tweets as they appear. So previously, they kind of had this algorithm acc- timeline where they wouldn't inject content, popular content sometimes from people you didn't follow into there and you could sort of shut this off by until box and says, don't show the best tweets, but it still Twitter gripe that was the exact way you can look at the media tweets, but not the best, but it's still kind of injected these sort of things in there. And so what happens is ends up being sort of scrambled experience. And so the more people you follow Twitter, the more just becomes sort of fire hose. And so a lot of people just wanted to, I just wanna see what's happening straight industry time line, and so they did it. And so I don't know. I tried it. I turned off the best ways and try to morning. I was like, yeah, I like this immediately because you're actually seen sort of the relevant stuff from the people that you're following rather than some kind of rent occasionally row. Random stuff. I got really sick of saying tweets, that would twenty three hours old. And the only reason I would love you because that got Monterey toys, a lots of height and lots of attention usually for not very good reasons as well. And they'll massively at a into sort of, I felt like an affront to the concept who tweeted to me, but also just like it felt like you only looking at things generated outright, which is already one of the big problems to anyone. That's just the problems with the internet full stop in yet. Look, I think it's real interesting. I, I think it's worth saying that they introduced these sort of messed up time line calling. It messed up pulling out what they would like to have it cold. Oh, expect an angry from Twitter PR and forty five minutes only back in two thousand sixteen..

"A champion their policies engage their constituencies end and and disseminate their policy so that's the basic premise of the lawsuit on the facts are fairly straightforward i'm sure your listeners are aware that president trump operates one of the most followed a two accounts on twitter he has i think about thirty five million followers on twitter and he regularly uses that account to uh to announce policy to describe policy to defend policy to engage with other world leaders and to engage even occasionally directly with his constituents about his presidency he has also taken to blocking critics on his twitter account i and the result of a blocking a it is really twofold it first prevents at twitter users from easily reading the president's tweets but perhaps more importantly it prevents twitter users from engaging with the president's tweets in the very lively common thread that surround each of his tweets and he has blocked a number of of critics from those threads and from seeing his tweets and we represent seven of them each of whom was blocked after posting a critical comment in the president's common threads arguing that uh the blocking is viewpoint discriminatory and for that reason of violates the first amendment thank you very much for.

"Okay who here is a twitter subscriber zero how many of you would pay 10 a month to use twitterthat was the only way you could use twitter small group what about five bucks few people are so we we have a portion of power twitter users here who would pay for the service there's no doubt for mommoffittnathan's in this morning the only way to fix twitter is to make it a subscription only service there are other people some of whom maybe in this room also think you should go this route would you ever consider ditching ads and making this a subscription online service or hot right into it i waited 10 years ago in this redcherbourg on rate at it is one of the 10000 suggestions we get for users which we welcome all the time i think it's important as for put into context a framework of how to think about that question and the other suggestions that we get from our user base twitter's and incredible service it's resilient but for the better part of the first nine years of its history we didn't really define what twitter was viewed asked any executive during that time period what is twitter in even board members you probably have gotten a different in a way we had a bunch of them onstage and algave different exactly will as our grow slowed in 2015 we had to come to grips with the funding what twitter was and what makes a powerful different and it will help put into context that the answer to your question after a lot of consternation about what we weren't what we weren't we ultimately decided that twitter is unique value proposition for consumers that is that we're the best at showing you what's happening the world and what's being talked about and when we think about different opportunities we have to be able to deliver that value and what allows us to be the best showing showing what's happened the world's really four things were the fastest noone breaks newsflash than twitter people may ask the question why is through the fastest will first and foremost are tweets are publicly available for anyone hissy in their broadly distributed or tweets are on our property with over 325 million monthly active users but they're also spread across thirdparty digital properties in on television with about 16 billion.
