Ethics of Commercial and Military Space

"I'm Fraser. Cain publisher of University with me as always Dr Pamela. Gay a senior scientist for the Planetary Science Institute and the Director of Bus Hip Pamela. Hey doing I'm doing well. How are you doing fraser a once again? The weather's just getting better and better. The apocalypse has never looked so. Lovely Garden is getting out of control. Is the chief sentence. It is now in control and we've got to cut it back. There's just too many plants too much grass too much weeds. I got many weeks ahead of me at this point out in the garden. The day of the trip is trying to be upon you exactly every year. More and more people are making their way to space. Some private citizens have already gotten their astronaut wings paying for a trip to space out of their own pocket. What are the ethical implications of this as the cost of spaceflight? Come down so we've got a new series. We're going to do like at least a two part series. Maybe at most two part series home. But this week we're going to talk about private spaceflight and just what are the ethical issues with this? Next week we will talk about military spaceflight. We're GONNA talk about Space Force. Although I think if we got timing a little better we could do. The episode after Space Force COMES OUT THE NEW TV show. Oh Yeah we can pull that off. Can we may thirty first. So let's talk about today. We'll talk about space tourism. The new movie that is planned next week will look at the trade off between commercial space and scientific exploration from the ground. So issues like the iridium satellites and of space resources for economic purposes. And then we'll go to space force. Okay now we've done two episodes about space tourism to fourteen and four fifty one to cover too much ground. But I think the thing that I found very interesting was just the way you had proposed it. Which is let's deal with the commercial and the ethics of this situation and we'll sort of see where that gets US first. Let's just talk about like? How do you define private spaceflight? When the purpose is the economic benefits of the parent company and its shareholders over the advancement of science and exploration causes that benefit mankind rather than stakeholders and. I mean like one version. That could very well be space. Tourism that you've got a space tourism company that is sending people on flights and they're having fun in going to the zero g hotel and enjoying themselves or flying to the moon and printing about on the moon in that low gravity but that is really just a sub set of what private spaceflight could look like so when you think about that larger umbrella. What are some other examples of the kinds of missions? We'd be run privately. Well this is where we start looking at. And this is what triggered this for me Sending people to spaced film adventure movies rather than to do the normal peacekeeping educational and scientific endeavors that take place on the space station even space tourists up until now have pretty much been tasked with. We're going to train you like an astronaut. You're GONNA do education stuff while you're up there too. And Hey we may throw you a bone and give you a little bit of science to do right but right now. Tom Cruise is looking to partner with spacex to partner with NASA and this has been tweeted out by NASA administrator. Jim Breitenstein they're gonNA film a not mission impossible but certainly an impossible mission on the International Space Station. Yeah I can't even imagine how awful difficult that process is going to be. I think I had a chance to interview someone who took the Imax seventy millimeter imax cameras up on the space station and tried to make a documentary. They gable the gave the astronauts. They taught them how to use these cameras than they had to. Fly Up with these cameras and try to shoot what they were doing. While they're up there and then send the footage back down or it was on the space shuttle. Anyway it was tough. Because it's a great big bulky professional camera that shoots an enormous amount of film at this huge aspect ratio. And it's a real challenge and so same thing right. Does he do his own shooting? Do you send up another person. Who's who does can handle camera sound hair makeup fright to the Astros get involved so I just. The details of this are blowing my mind but I think when you when we look at just all of human existence today and we think about all the trips that human beings take the vast majority of them are private right. When you fly in an airplane you know ninety nine point nine nine. Nine percent of the airplane flights are for private purposes. You are on a trip. You are carrying cargo. You are doing this. And then every now and then some would fly the airplane to a hurricane or you know to take some aerial footage of a of a drought. And that's the scientific purposes but the vast majority into. Why wouldn't it be that into the future? This is where it starts to become a how the numbers work out. And what is the ethics of this kind of question and in the frame of reference? I'm using for this is when I was a graduate student at McDonald Observatory. We'd periodically get. Vip's coming through the telescope and no matter what we're observing for science at that moment we had to kind of put it on the back burner and yeah. We'd bang the keys that we needed to keep things more or less going in a timely fashion but we had to pay attention to these guests who might be funders who might potentially help keep our science going one more year with the money. They might give the Observatory. And this okay. We are a not for profit. Enterprise we exist thanks to the generosity of our donors thanks to our competitiveness in peer reviewed science funding opportunities and thanks to our benefit actors in the state government who give us line item budgets. We know that we exist by the grace of all of these different humans and so we have to dance like the dancing monkey when they appear to keep them happy. That is of the job that we are. All aware of and astronauts are fully aware that that is also part of their job. They are all given amounts of media-training they're given massive amounts of here are effective ways to communicate complex ideas how to work a crowd how to be this stem educator. Even though they may be training pilot an engineer a doctor a myriad of other different things geophysicist. But they're all trained to be educators in the role of astronauts and when they're on the International Space Station. They know part of their is going to be on video cons with girl scouts to Judge Science Fair from outer space to do all these different feel-good tasks that remind everyone. Hey we have astronauts so the funding keeps flowing. We know that's part of the job. But that's a few moments a few hours out of your day and what we're looking at here is filming a movie in Outer Space. We don't know how long Tom Cruise and whoever else might be on the International Space Station but what we do know is while they're up there there. It's a twenty four hour gig in a large way and so now. Instead of being there a stem professionals benefiting mankind inspiring engaging educating their crew on a movie that the movie's primary goal is to have a great storyline and earn a whole lot of profit. And so where is the ethics in having our astronauts instead of engaging people in Wasilla educate them about space having them work crew on a film

‘Black Mirror’ Creator Says the World Is Too Bleak Right Now for Season 6 to Happen

"Charlie. Brooker gave an interview. He's the guy who created Black Mirror you know he's the he's overseas at all and he said you know quote at the moment. I don't know what stomach there would be for stories about society's falling apart so as a as a result of everything that's happening right now. He's not working on any new black mirror episodes. That doesn't mean there won't be a season six eventually. But for now he has no interest in writing the episodes. And you know he seems to think that audiences at this time aren't really in the mood for what Black Miras offers since we don't need the show. We can just look at everything that is happening right now.

Panic in the Streets

"We're discussing panic in the streets starring. Richard Would Mark Paul. Douglas Barbara Bel Getty's Jack Talents. Zero mastel directed by Eliah Kazan. This is the now playing. Co-host who's fond of Shishkabob Arnie Stewart? And this the CO host. Who Likes High Foreheads Jacob? Well we hope everybody at home is healthy and safe and likely quarantined. No matter where you're listening to us from the world. Yeah at the moment of recording. We are all separated apart. Watching the news is one of the shows that we've taped since this pandemic has hit America. We are hearing reports. There are over sixty thousand cases in America by the time this airs. Who knows but we are thinking about this pandemic and checking in with you. You guys told us you were interested in watching movies about viruses. I don't know about that you know I can understand why some people might be like. I want to turn that off. I don't WanNa think about that. It's scary to contemplate when you turn on the news these days. Yeah but people are I think indulging in it in some ways entertainment as of this recording contagion is the number four movie on Itunes and it has been for weeks and outbreak is in the top twenty five and let's face it. We had to kind of fill out our schedule. The new mutants is punted for the sixth time or something but James Bond got moved black widow. The new saw film fast and furious nine and just a couple days ago when we're recording. This wonder woman. Eighty four half of our schedule for the spring has no release date anymore. Yeah I thought it was going to be a super busy month person July and lots of new releases and now we don't know yes and we didn't really necessarily know how to approach virus movies. Either there are a lot of them and we've covered some of them and you can go find those in the archives. Twenty eight days later and I am legend. All the stand. I did a list. I wanted to see how many we've really done if people wanted to do. A full now. Playing virus retrospective. There's the I am legend trilogy. Starting with the last man on earth in nineteen sixty four. Yeah then Omega Man in seventy one. There's the stand from ninety. Four twelve monkeys. That counts right. Nine Hundred Ninety five definitely twenty eight days later two thousand and two resident evil also two thousand two twenty eight weeks later as well. Yep Yep rise of the planet of the apes and then its two sequels but rise. Came Out in twenty eleven. Dare I add it in the name of the King Two worlds. It might make you sick watching it. And there was someone plotting to release a virus. Yes and they did. That's the thing it's not if they were blinded they released it in the Kingdom of EB World War Z. And Day of the dead bloodline. Yeah I think what's different here because we do want to be sensitive. We're not doing the sensational Zombie outbreak. Type films I mean. We talked about all kinds of viral outbreaks. And we really wanted something that that would speak to. What's going on right now. Though yeah I agree I mean I want a very clear eyed view if you WANNA laugh and enjoy camping ones no judgment but it might seem inappropriate to make light of something that seemed so severe the way I thought about it is. It's more interesting even though we're told. Time and again. These are unprecedented times. Mankind has always dealt with viruses. It has always been a part of our story and it was interesting to think that we could go back through the decades and look at the ways that it was presented on film and how the general public thought about contagion and viral outbreaks. And it makes sense that we would start with panic in the streets in one thousand nine hundred fifty film when we were discussing the Tom Cruise film losing it Stewart. You pointed out that in the eighties. A lot of movies were being set in the fifties because baby boomers who were in their formative years in the fifties grew up and now they were writing films in the eighties so setting them thirty years earlier while thirty years or specifically thirty two years before nineteen fifty. The Spanish flu was out there so a lot of people. My Ninety nine year old grandmother is regaling me endlessly with this coronas. Nothing you should have been there for the Spanish flu. Nine hundred eighteen. Not many of us can say that we were there for that but it does sound awful. It killed a whole lot of people. And Yeah that comes up a lot. But even in the nineteen fifties which is the start. I think of the movie. Sub-genre virus movies kickoff with panic in the streets. Nine hundred fifty s were a scary time. That looked a lot like. Are you know right. Now we're thinking very much about protecting our seniors because they're what's at risk for covert nineteen but back in the nineteen fifties. Hide your kids to let them go to the pool. Don't let him play with other kids because if you do they're gonNA get infantile paralysis. Polio I mean the scare was real people close pools. They didn't let their kids out. He was considered a summer plague. School's out and then all of a sudden just populations of people all throughout the United States would suddenly be hit hard and kids would suddenly lose motor function and only able to breathe when they were put into an iron lung interesting statistic by the way it sounds a lot like corona only two percent of the population actually develop the disease and most of those cases were mild. Most of the people were not left with long term disabilities but it did impact a whole generation. I know my mom believes. She was diagnosed with polio. My Dad's second wife had it. You know the thirty second president. Fdr The reason why he was in a wheelchair he got it when he was thirty. Nine years old. You didn't even have to be a kit. People were living like we were back in. One thousand nine hundred eighty. When this movie came out there was a real field. If you send your kid to the movie theater. He touched another kid. This could happen wasn't until one thousand nine hundred eighty five. When Jonas Salk released his cure which was very controversial he was doing things that scientists disapproved of in order to get that vaccine and it worked one monkey equaled six thousand doses of immunization. And before you know it all the kids got to lead the iron lung and come home and famously. He didn't even keep the patent. It's something that warms my heart. When I think about it he thought it was unethical for anyone to profit from this cure and so he gave it away for free so there was panic in the streets in nineteen fifty and I think the other thing that might have inspired. The onset of movies talking about viruses was the smallpox outbreak of nineteen forty. Seven guy got on a bus in Mexico. City drove all the way to New York City. Didn't feel so well with feverish. The whole time went to Bellevue hospital a week later he died. That was when the doctors realized. Oh my God is smallpox. They had had a vaccine for smallpox for over century but because smallpox was so rare like nobody was immune from it so suddenly everyone. That man had come in contact when the bus was infected and it was being you know across the country so everyone literally was being impacted. Kind of like we are now. Everyone potentially could have smallpox what the government did was they started a big PR blitz. They put out commercials on the radio. Tv magazines go to our free health clinics. They opened them up all over the country. Get your vaccines and so everyone could sing the songs everyone knew about shots and the necessity of getting immune to smallpox. Hollywood jumps on trends. If something is big in the news. They're going to come up with a movie about it and I think that's the movie we're here to talk about today. I'd never heard of panic in the streets until we decided we were going to cherry pick. What is what the best the most iconic virus movie from each decade the fifties through the teens. And you said this is the top one on the list I I. I never heard of this. Yeah nor have I. This is totally new to me. I knew by reputation but I've never seen it either. I do think most people know Elia Kazan. He was a director more famous. Maybe for Broadway the stage but he helped pioneer the method acting. So if you know Brando if you know James Dean if you know all of those leading light actors for the nineteen fifties Elliott. Kazan probably worked with them and got them to be the actors that they were. Yeah I did look up this director and and unfortunately Brando. Unless he's in Superman or the godfather I I got a blind spot for his films as well as James Dean so I recognize. Yeah Kazan oh he's he's actually done some big movies but this one isn't one of his that I've heard of

The BEST Financial Strategy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The BEST Financial Strategy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

"There are things that can be learned during a crisis. There's also things that you're going to be in the middle of ego man. I wish I knew going in. But there's definitely something I'm going to internalize and then I'm GonNa make sure in the future. I don't get myself in this situation again now. What I think is so exciting Brian. Whether this is like a fortunate or unfortunate thing we've been through crises before whether it be the DOT com bubble or nine eleven or the great recession or fill in the blank. We've been here before. And one of the great things you said is after a crisis you can learn a lot from there you get to kind of do an after action review. We thought well maybe there are some things that we've learned from prior previous experience that we can share that might be viable as we approach this or even the next crisis. So let's see if there's some planning opportunities and things that you can figure out how this works with your financial situation so you not only go into this the next time stronger better and more prepared. You will be in a much better place to tackle shorts so number one. Give it gas and drive through it. I think I think we we. We talked about this. Appreciate you guys. Love recirculating this pitcher that Daniel created and this is supposed to me because he did some out. He found a picture of the hat that I had when party leader work in the drive through. I mean if you drove through the hardy's McDonough Georgia more than likely you saw me working there and I'll never forget that it was at heart disease that you know days of thunder crews Robert Hall and others it was. It was big hit movie and that we were the big sponsor restaurant and in that movie which I re watched probably in the last twelve months. I'll never forget Cole trickle gets in a situation where he has his horrible car accident and he's just not the same driver anymore. So Robert Duvall his character tells Tom Cruise. Hey when you see when you see the smoke when you see the accident coming ahead of you just drive through it you gotta hit the gas and draw through an encounter and if you're making an analogy we're in that situation right now. There's definitely smoke. Were concerned were fearful. You're trying to figure out. You have an investment plan. You have a dollar cost averaging plan. You have monthly 401k contributions. And you're like do I. Do I panic and pause and stop and stand still because you guys I hear you say standstill? But what does that mean for future investments? We're saying no if you're twenty years if you're in your twenties you're in your thirties during your forties even fifties. If you've got five years before you retire. All those systematic savings plans still need to be rocking and rolling so keep buying equity investments so buying risk gone asset. It's sounds like what I hear you say is that if you have planned appropriately and plan correctly when you see volatility when you see a downturn or when you see discomfort scary things that's not the time to be adjusting course changing strategy making moves trying to figure your way out of it. All of that planning and preparation should have probably happened before you got into the mess. It's just like in your race car driving analogy. It's the reason they have on the suits and helmets. They don't try to put the helmet on while they're getting into the end of the crash. That would be counterproductive. I think it's also we will look back in five to six years in the people who made money on. This is going to be a lot of people but man look out lucky. That person is Sean Angelie. They man it must be great that they had this opportunity to do it. I I. It's just like people from the two thousand. Eighteen non collapsed were real estate. I have clients that bought rental property back then that are sitting quite nicely now. Wow how did they knew to do that? Did they have some crystal ball? Some magic tea leaves no guys you just have to look at. The current financial situation see where the opportunities are and be willing to maximize the opportunity and a lot of people. They think about this when they look back and they go. How did they know about the financial opportunity guys? The opportunity is big enough to drive a truck through. This is not something that requires you to be a genius when you see that valuations of companies like price earnings ratios of the stock market and the S. and P. Five hundred is getting down to historic lows. Gets kind of easy to see? We're probably getting closer to a bottom than we are to the to in the losses that we've fallen down from so keep buying those risk assets that we get all the time as people say to us. Oh well okay I hear you say key by but don't know where the bottom is. Why don't I just wait until it gets to the bottom and then I'll start buying well? That's great if you wouldn't mind sharing with us with the bottom is going to be then we'll all just make tons of money. What actually happens. We never know exactly when that knife is going to hit the bottom. We never actually know when it's going to bottom out so while right now today may not be the lowest point that the market's going to get to. It's still a great buying opportunity. You don't want to get it just right if you can get close over the long term. You're going to be successful. And that's why we we're GonNa talk later about the importance of creating a systematic savings plan. And why that way you can take the emotional part out. But here's let's move on a number two we talk about. This is a tool you can. Use is called harvesting losses. This is something that I won't and your Batman Utility Belt. I want you to have this tool imbo. What's the power of this? Yes this is actually one of the things I would say. Probably at at the firm abound wealth management. We've been doing the most in the past week or two. This is probably been the most active that we've been doing. So let's go to like a webster's dictionary definition. What IS TAX LOSS? Harvesting will tax loss. Harvesting is the practice of selling a security that has a loss by realizing the loss investors may offset taxes on gains and or income. In the what this doesn't say is I'm going to sell security at a loss and just go to cash sit there. Will you go to panic when you tax harvest? You're actually recognizing a loss without changing your overall investment plan investment strategy. Yeah what I like about. It is is that look. We know. Markets are down like we have a v-shaped recovery and there's even a perfect illustration. Let's take two people that start at ten thousand dollars. Let's show the differences between this sure. So let's say that we have to investors F. T. E. D. Daniels due to investors Tony Entries and they both have ten thousand dollars at. They're going to invest just in a broadly diversified index fund. Let's assume that for both of them. The value of the investment drops by ten percent and they both had ten thousand dollars invested and then it goes down ten percent down to nine thousand. Well Tony he says you know what I listened the money guy show so what I'm going to do is I'm going to sell that. Index Fund. Nine thousand dollars and I'm going to immediately go vest. Invest that Nine Thousand Index Fund. It's similar same type of asset class same type of investment opportunity but it's not identical is materially different enough that. I'm not just buying more of the same thing. Have a little bit of a different. So maybe one international index to another that way you avoid the wash sale rules no wash. That happens so theresa on the other hand she does nothing she just lets her ten thousand dollars nine thousand well then the investments. Both of them come back up. Let's say that the investment for both of them goes back up to ten thousand dollars so they both have an investment portfolio of ten thousand. What was actually happened is Tony. He sold at nine thousand and reinvested. He actually has a thousand dollar loss that he capitalize on or that he harvested that he can use to offset any capital gain income. This year it can even potentially use it as offset up to three thousand dollars of ordinary income and if he has so much losses at not only the all of his capital gains and not only does he offset three thousand hundred ordinary income. He can actually carry those losses into future years and use them in future years. What I like about it this is. This is a strategy. That don't overcomplicate this. All this is allow. You don't put your money on the sideline you just walk in the paper of loss that way serves as a tax benefit. Meaning that you might actually get a refund of some money when you file your taxes in April. The other thing it does is. We know you're in a lot of mutual funds and other things issue out a lot of investment income. If you walk in these losses elise allows you to have an offset to that income so once again lowering the tax bill with really out changing anything in your risk profile. Not Changing. Much your behavior of how you're structuring. Your investments is utilizing the tool to save as much as you can off taxes so this is a great thing we talk about all the time. This is one of the things that we use when we are in some of the volatile times. It's a tool we use as we're perpetrating. Re-balancing clients are getting portfolios. Back into the right. Mix to take advantage of some of the volatility. Tax Laws Harvesting. Just like you said. It is a great tool in the Batman tool bell that you ought to think about

"Only we will the story of Tom Cruise movie of the society where the there are these people who are basically tortured these these three brothers and sisters who you have the ability to combine to kind of see the first see the future and see what people are going to do and so they're able to read their thoughts and be able to determine who's going to commit a crime and then they go and arrest that person before they've done anything and they put them into the state of of Stacy S. which I can only assume is its own level of holy hell and then Tom Cruise won the cops and then all of a sudden he's on the list and you have to go prove his innocence the the whole thing it is actually a very good movie when it's a movie because it's a cautionary tale it's not supposed to be a how to manual you know it's it's like nineteen eighty four nineteen eighty four supposed to be a cautionary tale not a how to manual so the FBI is doing this that they're looking to be able to analyze your threats in case you make a threat your time in a thread that I actually make or threat that you think that I made or a threat to you're going to tell me that I don't even know was a threat no joke about the people who claim to be woke see they know things that you don't know they understand things that you don't understand they see things you don't see feel things that you don't feel right so they know how to be aware and alive and they know what racism is they know a bigotry is you ever hear this from Alexandria costs of Cortez I don't know if I ever played this audio she was on the podcast pod save America it's it's run by a couple of guys are part of the Obama a team speech writers it's a very very popular and I think do I have the from the question I have from her let me look here trump becomes president and there's this debate about you know our trump voters racists and clearly see the rallies you see some of the stuff online and there's racism there and then I wonder like I don't necessarily want to vilify people who vote for trump at the same time you also need to call racism out and I don't know how even be on trump I don't know how we ever sort of pieces back together or we were the spaces for these conversations that it's not Twitter now it's certainly not so the idea is that that he sets up for revision of a classic Cortez here is the idea of trump supporters as racist can you blanket say they're all racist yes and now compact connected to this precogs story out of reason of the FBI wants to come through the social media and make a determination if you made a threat based on what they're trying to pre decide listen to represent of a costume Cortez and how she utilizes her so called logic here well first of all I think when the biggest mistake that we have and it's a trap that gets set by the right whether intentionally or unintentionally is just the frame of asking is blank racist that is something that we have to pull ourselves out of it's not about asking whether trump voters are racist we need to talk about racism not Hey Seth yeah so she first wants to go about telling you there's a difference we don't talk about racist we have to talk about racism by racists it's a very two dimensional boring conversation is something racist yes or no and then you do about that we need to talk about racism it's con towards its histories where it manifests how it's used because like all winning political phenomenon whether they're good or bad in your opinion they rely on coalition building so trump relied on the coalition and a core part of that coalition were racists let's stop in this scenario she is determined your guilt as you determine your guild by applying herself to another plane right so it's not about the racist it's about racism and the contours and this and that and the other the first things first of course trump won with racist which based on her definitions and her desires include you because she has put herself in the position to be able to decide who the racist is because she is the one who thinks she gets to make good decisions on the definitions and the definitions are not based on things that we might all agree on but rather on the things that are her whim like for example if she were to scroll through your social media feed and take something that you know to be innocuous but she decides has deep dark meaning my goodness look at that photo you know you made the okay symbol in that photo well that's clearly a white supremacist we understand how ugly the solace when we look for meaning in meaning in meaning and don't listen to words if I put out a tweet that says he'll Hana Mars an anti semite based on what she has said and done which is a tweet I pretty sure I put out there to the world to the Alexandria cause you Cortez is of the world then take that we come back to me and say oh you're a racist what do you mean I'm a racist I'm talking about is that there is some I don't wanna mark yes you're only doing that because she's a brown person she's a woman of color that happens all the time I am the guy who popularized the term racer I did not create the term but racer is somebody who's conspiratorial about race this goes back to the days of Barack Obama if you do if you were not a fan of your not a believer in obamacare your racist what are you talking about it's a terrible policy it's because he's black I'm not in favor of government run healthcare shore because the black guy wants it you see how that works what made reading into your tweet any different how is it any different the minority report.

"It just for me, but if you're in Norway. Yes, I love to hang out and whatever happens happens and she's like, I live in Romania. Why would I ever go to accept to see you? Have you have you watched our fjords? They're beautiful Georgs of fjords here you can have fun on the fjords, and then you can have fun in my Ford's. That's driver four Torres because I am into that's for the esta is Ford Fiesta. So obviously you'd go for it because you jump headfirst to exciting story. I'm in love with her. Yes. What I just showed you one picture and I even see it because of the glare. But. Downloading hater. I hate. Later I had to look up what hater was. Do you know what hitter is? So it's a dating after matches you based on mutual hatred or things. Oh, I hate vegans. Oh, hey, begins to the theory being that people are more attracted to those that hate similar things rather than like similar things inherently negative. I'm not behind it. Yeah. So you would match with someone who also hated that? Yeah. Cool. I'm back in. All right. So what would you do this? If I were you after all. What I would do is let her visit me and tell her to stay with me and then regret it the entire time. That's probably what I would do. I think what you should do is tell her that you're not ready for a relationship where you guys see each other, but you like texting every once in a while because the truth. Yeah, God, it'd be fun story. I wanna see what happens. Whatever happens. You gotta let us know. Give us that follow up. We need to follow up. I could, but you know, he's, he's a teenager from Norway. It's a, it's a lot of pressure. It's an exciting situation. Could time kind of kind of want them just say yes, because it'll be like great story, not only for us before himself. Later in life, you'll definitely survive unless she some sort of Ethan hunt esque spy, how cool is it? The cold open of mission impossible, whereas we're always something and then. The credits are rolling. Did you like it? She did. She liked it a lot. All right. Cool. 'cause I wanna know like the the POV of somebody who's not necessarily huge, Tom Cruise slash action movie star. Yeah, right. Exactly. Not usually like action, movies, but she dug it and she went to bed in the middle of vendors, Infinity, which we also watched this weekend. It was a whole Jake. For I got my way that thirty three, maybe that's the difference. I don't like superhero movies because it just like I'm inventing a gun in. I've invented a bigger gun in, there's so much effects. I can't wrap my brain around it, but I like the idea of Tom Cruise jumping from building to another building. That's more since like understandable to me. You're like, I could imagine an evil mastermind trying to set off atomic bombs. Yeah, I can't quite imagine a alien overlord trying to take over the universe. Both of them like Ethan hunt and you like the alien overnight any any like, but he like I like people of outstanding stature and overcoming odds, like even like Tom Cruise is the man. You can do anything, but it's like that mission was nearly impossible even was so close the way they narrowly avoided disaster. What I wanna see Tom Cruise in a superhero movies so I can. Once and for all do I just dislike. Super. I love super superhero right. He's always just played like every man or not every meme, but like ambition, Ethan hunt is basically Batman. Yeah, Tom Cruise has Batman, makes sense to me. I'd like to see that too late. He's fifty five or fifty. Six. He's forever young forever young. All right. Thanks for listening. We are all at a time. If you have your own questions or theme song submission cinema to if I were you show at gmail.com. Opening one was Jacobs mom. This closing one is Silvana again. I think we use her song last week or the week before another theme song it's a ocean is cover. Not really sure what that is, but thank you so von and thanks to you for listening. We'll be back next week by the time you hear our next episode. Jake will be a married man. Oh, boy. Imagine that dragons Chow. I've been leasing. Cast. Make me smile. Camis. <music>. He has to. Tom Cruise is the man. And so am I also what. Tom Cruise man. And then what are you? You're the man because you watched it while eating popcorn. I'm the man to related reading. Got it. Tom Cruise is also completely like avoided, like like, you know, how Will Smith has to become more relevant, make his own Instagram videos. Now, Tom Cruise is not like tweeting up a storm or Instagram videos behind the scenes, Instagram or Twitter, you know, I checked and he recently did, I think for mission impossible. But it's like almost like run by his like. Clips trailers. It's not like hanging out with this person. He so guarded. I can't imagine a world where Tom Cruise's driving or texting on his phone. Imagine like Tom Cruise waiting for a sandwich on his iphone. Like, I don't think he does that. This is Matt. He's the new Matt, Damon, but he's like, Matt, Damon, like Matt, Damon, I can't. I can imagine him doing normal things, but not during the poorly. I can't even imagine Tom Cruise, like going to bed and waking up. Like what is that process like for Tom Cruise. This Tom Cruise go to the dentist. The dentist comes to. This makes a HouseCall for crews. And then like when they're shooting, he had a hotel and like getting picked up in a car and arrive in to set or does he take his own motorcycle like I don't know who this guy is and what he does. Does he have friends? No, he doesn't have a posses not hanging out with Toby. Maguire z. listened to a podcast talkers ever listened to a podcast. I wanna see. No, I have to say now because I can't fucking handle the reality of Tom frigging crew, a huge fan of my brother. My brother and me and not us. I think his name is actually Tom Cruise to makes it even like once at once and every other generation heroes born with a perfect game. Perfect attitude, perfect body, perfect face and his generation Amir, Shmuel ohi. There I can sing and dance. I wonder if he can do that. You think he'd be musical theater just because he can do everything good can dance. I don't. They say he's still charming. Heck can tell. I'm Kristie. Google can time cruising you think he wants to comedy like tropic thunder style? He hasn't comedy tropic. Thunder style? Yeah, but like starring he would start a comedy or that'd be too dangerous for his brand. Jerry Maguire's, like sort of a rom com. Did you see American made the last movie he was in? Yes. How is that one? It wasn't as good as the like. I like these. I like. Locked BUSTER. Tom Cruise will like Jack Reacher and. Lived, I repeat or Edita that was called and and the mission impossible's. Like in those movies, he's the man. He knows like what's any like in kick ass. And in American made, he's like sort of a pilot who like stumbles onto like dealing with the cartel, like he's not an action hero see him. You don't buy them as guy who can't do everything. Yeah, the party was bored to play. Like why it right in American made he should've singlehandedly taken down tell 'cause he's Tom frickin cruise. That's why. Can you sing. But he could probably learn how he learned how to fly fricken helicopter. I also heard that he learned how to hold his breath for seven minutes, really in the last mission. And yeah, and he uses to say he's a politician and he's never seen a movie. See, that's the thing. I think he's trying to convince you that he's seen every movie, but I, but I don't know if that's the, he's either every movie or he's never seen a movie. He's seen every movie. They show him every movie in some private theater all day three day. Silver screen cinema, I love it. I love it. Thinking ever do TV. No, I don't think he will prestige limited. No. 'cause like who? So it would be a movie star movies. Yeah. Like, I think he's one of the few people left. I wouldn't disagree with them. The old guard that would say like TV devalue what I do. Yeah, because the thing is too. Broadcast is video game playing on twitch. That'd be great guy. Love him. Just talking about video games. He'd never gets around the plane. Oh, what's my favorite video Game? Boy. There's so many of you play like Donkey Kong Country on twitch. You can play anything on Twitter. Maybe I'll start that. Doing Donkey Kong Country playthrough. Yeah, people like older games. People do. Speed runs wanna, do slow and steady. That's how you speed, demon speed, demon. No love the median screen mission impossible to. He didn't take any up front money, but he negotiated thirty percent of gross ticket sales see me seventy five million dollars on that movie. And that was the second mission impossible like this most recent one he's gotta make so much more. So I think actually for like no other reason than that, he won't do TV because it's like, why would I do TV? I can do one of these mission impossible movies and make a hundred million dollars and almost killed not all that the money for eight. You know what? It might not be all about the money, but it's all about pleasing fans. Maybe some people just want meals made for them. Their spouses staff Huhne's. Yes, I was. It was like she was wearing like a like a fancy bra or no bra, but they were like, you can't run a marathon, not wearing a sports bra like you're gonna get chafed clear at that point. I don't know if she was like really like, of course she was in Scientology, but I think she was like. She got super into it right. That's why she ran away. Well, Tom, I disagree. I think she, I think you should stop trying to rob this young woman, Oliver accomplishments. Yeah. There's some good trivia. About Tom Cruise that I think we should bring up the internet movie database, do you know? And this is from there. Speaking of Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise has been married three times, and every time he's got divorced, his wife has been thirty four years old. I didn't know that. Yeah. Are you upset that you can't be as wife now. Too old. Apparently he would divorce me years ago. It'd be fun to be married to Tom Cruise though. Right? Just to be clear that was l. jokes. I don't actually believe that. Don't tell played, how is it a clerk. It's because I- somebody's phone. This is going to be like the like it's going to set a record for the most. Something. One piece of evidence has been used multiple trials. So you hoping at some point. In the future, defamation lawsuit like your defense attorney. You can play a clip if you saying. Hey, befuddle to be married to Tom. Yeah. Bygones be would when you're married to Tom Cruise, you don't have to. Yeah, you don't probably don't have to interact with them all that much. And you know you get your Meal's cooked for you. Wouldn't that be awesome per? You wouldn't marry somebody if he was like, hey, you don't have to worry about like procuring food. You just ask for whatever food you want, and somebody will make it for you wouldn't marry somebody just to get my milk. For me. Not by your spouse by your spouse's no staff. No, I still wouldn't be enough for me. To marry, pray to marry anyone, but especially to marry a man like. Whatever you're, you're uptight. I am too tight. Consider marrying Tom Cruise, Tom, did you know this? Tom Cruise has one now, you know what, though if he took me out a motorcycle ride and if he got down on one knee pricey. Yeah, Tom, I'm telling you. He didn't win an Oscar. I think we're both underestimating his his charisma, in-person Mel. I'm positive that he's, I watched a thing today with him like a interview from, like, you know, like a geek movie news website and the person was like, yeah, every time I've interviewed, Tom Cruise have been short interviews, but like he knows my name. He knows things about me like he's read the last few things I've done and they're like, you know, I interview these people like press junkets all the time and like I get it. I get why people don't. They can't remember all this shit and they can't, but they're, I don't know how he does it, but he doesn't. And it's crazy. He's the only person that like really like, you feel like he knows you? Yeah. Well, he connect. Yeah, weird teeth, Tim. I was just about to bring up his teeth because they're beautiful teeth very. Nice teeth. There shifted one tooth over. Yeah. One of his teeth is right in the middle. Yeah, I think what they did. Just like, hey, you wanna have a winning smile. You end of the winningest smile in history and he's like, hell, EM, Tom Cruise. These big productions doesn't have a movie every year. He comes close though. I actually I'd be hard pressed. Maybe that's not the movies and some movies. He hasn't taken a year off. Well, he took three years off between Jerry Maguire and is wide shut, but I think is why shut win. Just super long, right? Yeah, because he was supposed to be in what was it? He's supposed to be like another movie like a big movie. Oh, what was it like? Went to Will Smith instead handcock. It wasn't a Hancock. Hancock is an underrated movie. That handcock fifteen years. I'm never going to see it. I'm sorry, you're a good friend of mine that is Cam ideas in it too. I think what I think it has somebody you never want to see a sequel Shirley there on. I was get them confused. You shouldn't. Well, I do so different. I should know I'll women are the same to you objects. No, it's just like they two blonde women who normally have like are going after the same roles going after them, but they have similar roles. Look, you'll be much easier to keep everything straight now that Charlie, Sarah on the picture, not sharp. Got damaged. Miller, one Cameron? Yeah, we've been talking about. She's the picture now. Yeah, I'd like to see night and day. I bet that movie is. Looking up as I am db earlier today. I forgot he was in that movie. I remember watching the trailer and thing and like fun doesn't look like it's going to, you know. Knock citizen Kane off the top one. That list of the top one. Citizen Kane. I watched a few minutes of citizen Kane the other day town. Can I tell you what boring? Yeah, people in black and white talking to each other. Yeah, Bolivian I think that's my. That might be my very Tom Cruise movie. Can I ask you something? What the hell is oblivion? It came out and twenty. Thirteen ahead, Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman. And Melissa Leo Zoe Belle. Veteran scientic strapped. Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself. This was during the time when like he was just kind of doing he was like the only person out there doing like a rigid original science fiction. That wasn't an adaptation of anything came tomorrow, which is an adaptation, but it's like an adaptation of a Mangga comic or whatever. It's like. And they apparently comic, you say, in apparently they changed a lot of it. From that? Yeah, Tom get this. He lives. He dies, then he repeats it all. That's what they name the movie. Yeah. Collateral is a very good movie, Tom, I watched collateral on a plane recently. Yeah, I think where we going somewhere together, think I was there. I don't travel. Not since the incident while I thought it was. Sorry. What is lions for lambs? He played Senator Jasper Irving in it. When did that come out? Two thousand seven sustained by two army Rangers behind behind animal lines in Afghanistan. It's blink would to style humor. What the hell is Robert Redford Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise, I've never heard of this movie my whole life. He has a weird he has. He has seen career, right? He does it all is he. I know I talked crap that nobody actually likes him. I do think if you met him in person and I was telling you this unrelated conversation earlier today, that wasn't even about Tom Cruise. Like I bet if you bet Tom Cruise in real life, he'd be like you'd be blown away. Like I'm suspect when going clear the documentary based on that book that's. We're not talking about this good. I was like, okay, good. They're finally going to take this scumbag down. This guy's Teflon like he's he's more beloved than ever now and people know more unseemly things about him than they ever had. The only real unseemly thing is all of the stuff. Building his his airplane hangar in cutting grass? "Did you enjoy his turn as the antisemitic, caricature in tropic thunder, screw them. Not really. I remember drunk. Everybody loved that that, oh my God, I can't believe Tom Cruise. Did that put them in a bunch of makeup? And he said, like, what? Did he say? Raunchy things? I never saw tropic thunder. I liked tropic thunder, but it's one of those movies that I don't understand why people like love it and think it's like one of the best movies ever made. I don't know that anybody similarly, we're like so blown away by Tom Cruise, and it's like, well, he came in for a day or two and the e can you know a wacko for a minute when people are just like. Acts like a wacko twenty four, seven otherwise, like, oh my God, I can't believe he would do something like that. The man from rock of ages or like. What was that other movie that recent. German night and day. You remember that? Yeah, I k- and K. I. g. h. t. I think that was the names of the people. Yeah, it was. I'll tell you it was really Miller June havens. So No, no, not. no. No, Paul dano is in them. We we played Simon FEC probably a bag. Yeah. I don't know why was a young woman gets mixed up with the disgrace by who's trying to clear his name. Hey, did you know this about Cameron Diaz retired from the business since when nobody knew about she didn't tell anybody last movie she was in was Amy in twenty fourteen. The had it. We know she's retired. I'll tell you why somebody asked about a through trash. I was looking rare window emails, but Nekia layers. No, somebody was doing an interview about the sweetest thing. You remember that picture? Not the YouTube song and I had the in it though, right in the trailers, at least, and that's all I care about. Tom, I don't like movies. I like trailers a trailer fan. I'm a trailer, fiend trailer, freak Eliah times trailers nowadays. They've seen that aren't even in thing movie. Yeah. Fake out. The trailers used to be like the after the movies. I didn't know that that's why they're called trailers. Oh, oh my God. Tom, that blows me away. Why did they change it? So people actually watch him. I guess nobody, you know what? I feel like trailers where after the movie back when. Nobody had anything to do. The movie's credits were like three seconds, log words. She'll like the director's name and their top five built stars hundred. Nobody cares to help the boom mic shut up go. But now they could bring him back now that there's the, the post credits and all that. I guess you could say, you could argue that that kind of is a trailer. Yeah, they're getting back to the old ways. Tom, you just blew my mind. I turn my u-turn my way. You turn my thinking. You turn my brain on crazy bowed Brandon crazy, but it's. Gauge. Gears up there. Trying remember this last mission impossible had, no, it had like a snazzy and credits, you know, like not just a black screen and white text, but like shoot. Yes. Well, I ain't got the Dan dant then then and then then Dan it, what the hell do you not know the impossible to different extra beat? That's what they did in the thing. They make it four, four of five, four idiot. All right. Read a book on music. Junior and the other guy from? Yeah. Play Tonny in the in the in the first one, at least. Yeah, that movie was gonna flop. Why couldn't they get panel in the edge? I know. I know. Yeah. Why by bond, the edge like took lead on the Spiderman musical there were like, now we're gonna sit out this mission, impossible movie with the most bankable star in the world. Anyway, Christina Applegate was asked about a sweetest thing reunion or Applegate. Yeah, she was awesome movie. Confusing and she was like a sequel and she was like, oh, I mean we'd love to, but Cameron Diaz is retired, and then she's like, oh crap. I wasn't supposed to say that. And then everybody went digging and must have been sad for Cameron Diaz be like, nobody noticed I was gone. Yeah. So you think she instructed like all of our friends don't tell anyone..

I, but like, I don't know. I, I will say that like I get. Why is a big movie star because he does big movies he's done cocktail. He's done brain men. The story of the world's smartest man. He did Raymond and what's his name that plays Raymond Hoffman. Rainman or Raymond in the movie. He's like way he's way older than Tom Cruise. It was kind of like a weird thing for them to believe, ability wise that they were brothers are sixteen years apart that can happen. It can happen, but still, you know what I'm sick of people be like the actors are like, suspend your disbelief. Just just pretend they're brothers. He plays Raymond's brother and he goes Rober Bella the whole movie. What's your favorite? Tom Cruise movie. Nice, white, shut you Perv. I mean, that's not a bad movie. This guy, and then he walks into your like I misjudged him. Yeah, right off your feet. No, I think he's probably five. Six? Yeah. I mean, is five seven that much better than five. Six one inch taller. I guess that's true. Bad checks out. Yeah. Why do people hire Tim Robbins too tall for movies. He's very, if you're that tall and you want to be in movies, you get a number plays like a tall guy movies. How tell is six, three, six, five, okay. Well, I think what happens is you get a natural crouch going, they never show for the waste out at just walks down the street. You would imagine his knees slightly. "That was my main question. I thought maybe finally. Why she left her show just settle down. Down. I don't know like he's the guy that like everybody says is like, hey, what a consummate movie star, right? Yeah, but like, what do you actually like loves them? Right. Only now in this weird. I don't understand what kids are doing these days. Gonna blame fortnight for Tom Cruise. Here's my thing. Like feelings. A have been like devalued, like what is shit posting. I feel like the fact that young people are like Tom Cruise rules. Is like the movie star liking equivalent of shit posting where it's just like, and no. It's funny to say that it's not ironic. He is kind of cool, but also like I'm just gonna. I'm just going to. Has he get older years, get more and more paranoid that everything's a trick on you or check on me. Refused to play the game. Of course. Yeah. You're the only one to smart. You cant outwit somebody who's above it all. It's my mom. I don't think it's ship posing. I think it's literally actually, I will say that. I think one of the reasons why mission impossible six fall our does that is is like, what does that have to do with Tom Cruise is doing so well and such zeitgeist right now is because it's one of the few movies that this summer that is not part of marvel or like other cinematic universes, it is. It is, but it's it's own franchise and like ano- it's almost like a hearkening back to the way franchises used to be like, well, yeah, there aren't like spinoffs and separate movies that are connected. It's like, Nope, there's one and two, then three, then four, then five minutes. Six. That's that's older. You watch him in to watch other things understand what's going on at the league. Before you're talking about discounting, movies from another franchise. It was so boring. I've blocked it from my memory, but yeah, this doesn't do that. Right? Because there's barely any continuity between the. Like the later movies got a little more serious about continuity than the early ones. Tom disclosure. Only seen one of the mission, impossible movies, and I watched it two days ago, but my air conditioner is so loud, but I didn't hear dial. Team you buy like a sound bar recent? I did, but here's the problem. I watched a kind of late at night above the Sembler so hot. I put that on the -partment Boylan now now I wish well. In the winter? No, probably still be inefficient compared to a heater put if I'm using it anyway. That's true. Yeah. Watch all six mission impossible's at that point, the six VOD by then Tom video on demand, perhaps you've heard of it heard of it. I demand all the time. I demand video veal man, video on request. Yeah, because then it's like well, and it might be other countries. Requesting movie accent is that that is just a general's general foreigner accent over here. Exactly saying that they're nicer than the US. Yeah, but you know what? Sometimes they requested and the movie company comes back goes, you know what now? So that's when you got back. I tried. I tried it your way. I tried to be nice now pictures. The night man, this movie right now, and they're like, well long, my home. This is my Sonos sound base that will. That will be way too loud.

"She did back in twenty fifteen with Stacy Elaine de show called the rehabilitation of Tom Cruise that was at the all dot com. I think there's some really good insights there, but interview with the vampire is for choice. And of course it's one of the eleven cruised movies I haven't seen. I've just never been interested. I've also read pit, isn't it? It's partly pit. It's also partly Tom Cruise, the two patron saints for me of don't let them play characters and characters playing vampires. But no, I'm hearing Amy it. It works where I really feel bad, Josh is that I could have. I could've found time this weekend. It's always so hard for me to find a movie with my wife that you actually wants to watch film spotting movie. She actually wants to watch. She totally would have watched Tom Cruise and Brad, Pitt play vampires, and I screwed up. You didn't. Do your homework, you're no, you're not nearly as dedicated as Tom Cruise this. This is not an oddball pick for me. I have interview with vampire as an honorable mention for my list. I also had, as I said, is wide shot and magnolia. I think Rainman I gave some consideration. We've talked about him possibly giving the better performance than Dustin Hoffman, even though Hoffman's pretty good. There. Collateral Peterson, w hill and Facebook said, has to be collateral all the charisma and charm are there, but they are met with the dead nece behind the is accurate. Really like that performance. Then here's one. I'll go to bat for that is an oddball night and day Alaric of an action spy flick element is, yeah, he's in that has Larson recommends all over his pretty pure crews there. She's a lot of fun good film night and day. You like any goofy movie camera d. as in don't you road, would you running from killers and you're good a life less ordinary to good, which I haven't seen night and day, but in comparison it's probably citizen Kane. I don't have any honorable mentions of. Standout as unique here? I suppose I will say I've always been a fan of some of his early eighties movies, not only risky business. His small part in the outsiders love that movie love that book as a kid, and I've always been a fan of all the right move. So I'll give him some credit. Now if you want to trace the over the top unhinged, Tom Cruise, you can trace that all the way back to taps. Another movie, I saw a bunch as a kid where he has one of the best lines ever as he just unloads on people with a machine gun in a burst of violence. I'm just gonna leave it there. I'll let you a legit YouTube but and see if it's there, but that's it's cruise. It has an inch best..

"Through with the character and the dedication to a craft. The comes through in what was clearly hours of repetition and practice in order to become that good all do come through in that cruise performance, even though it is one very early in his career. So it's hard to sort of argue, it's a culmination of everything cruises done. But for me, it doesn't body that got us. It added to the list of Scorsese's I have to see before it can be a complete on him. But yeah. Paul Newman, Tom Cruise answer says the definitely made Saddam. I catch up list. So I mentioned the Nicholson book. We've talked a lot about her. We might as well hear from her as she did in her Twitter bio informs us of this. She literally wrote the book on Tom Cruise. We had to ask her what's her favorite, Tom Cruise performance. And anytime we do this, I get a little bit concerned that it's going to be one of the films that's on our list. Maybe it's an overlap. She says, born on the fourth of July. We've already babbled about that or Jerry Maguire. It's not gonna at anything that we haven't already heard the listeners have already heard. Well, we did not have to worry about that with Amy, Nicholson, hey, guys, Nicholson here, the author of Tom Cruise anatomy of an actor. So of course I wanted to call in with my favorite Tom Cruise performance hearing, and I'm saying favorite not best, but maybe best, but definitely favorite. My favorite, Tom Cruise performance is less dot an interview with vampire, and here's why. I don't know how much people remember the outrage win. Tom Cruise was cast as the Stott. I mean, if we had had Twitter back, then it would have completely burned down. People were furious. They've really wanted Dan Lewis or really like anybody. Besides Tom Cruise to play list dot this like fashionable thin, red haired, European men who just like exuded sex appeal because the thing Tom Cruise is even in his movies, or he's sexy and romantic. He doesn't get exude sex appeal. Like I mean, when you think about him, in magnolia, he doesn't kiss anybody. He doesn't make anybody. He just talks big game and that's kind of been cruises MO really. He's not that much of a man to kill anyway. I digress. What I'm getting at is that Tom Cruise was so committed to doing Justice to the role of Stott here at every single book. In this series, he really knew dots biography, not just the stuff that you see in interview with the vampire in that script and in that book. But let's arc a somebody who. Loved in the past and lost and handle this fear about the people he loved, leaving him behind. And you see Tom Cruise channel. This really deep and empathetic knowledge of the Stott into the character. You see when he plays piano four, kissing in the way his eyes light up when he thinks that she's being nice to him and that maybe he can build this family that they never give him a chance to really build the as villain pretty much from the get-go. You know what I find affecting about that role is that Tom Cruise is almost so good at la- Stott that he ruins the movie because I think Brad, Pitt intended to walk into it would just all of the audience's sympathy because every with vampire is so told from his point of view from Lewis point of view that Brad Pitt actually didn't even do any homework. Like he told interviewers at the time that he picked up interview with the vampire the book and threw it into the trash. So you're watching a whole move. Eighty watching mopey mopey Brad Pitt. Expect the audiences are going to side with him that list dots this jerk. But Tucker's started just so much more compelling and watchable in wonderful that to me, the movie falls apart because Tom Cruise, just so good. All I have to learn. They don't. Gift. Gave it to you. So that's my favorite Tom Cruise performance, and you might think I'm crazy, but for real watch it again every little detail he does in that film magical and that he could pull up that role when nobody thought he could. By the way. Thank you Amy so much for that. We will linked to more information about her book in our show notes, and we will also linked to an interview..
