"And we were talking a little bit about some surprising finds that she had in the book. But also I wanted to ask you the question. Well in any book, there's always not enough space to say all you need that you have any problems in this line. Well, the work was supposedly four hundred pages. It ended up five hundred pages, and I had to dub the few that things I would really love to put in. I think there are things missing. And the hope is that it is a stark, we need more of the history of Latinos, we need more of the history of Asian women. They're missing pieces, but the choices so rich there is so much history to be found into beat toll and large collection from lots of years of studying Syria. So it was really a. It wasn't exactly a terrible choice. But it was really inviting pieces of it that would give at least teasers to rise to the surface. The fun of doing an 'em Follivy is that you know history. Usually is the historian the scholar the expert saying this is what happened, and this is what they said, but you don't get to interact with the people themselves and Inam Thala. Gee what I try to do with. This was to set up the background set up the context of it. What's going on? Why are they saying this? What what does it mean that they're saying this in a little bit about that? And then boom go right into and here is the first woman to run for well actually to declare her candidacy for. President of the United States who ends up spending election night in jail arrested under the Comstock axe the anti-obscenity act for exposing to hashtag metoo in her newspaper. Who were they who does she expose? She exposed the most famous minister in America, Henry ward Beecher who was using his position and his religious authority to sexually co worse. His female parisioners and the other one was to Wall Street offer to who the toilet hall and her sister, Tennessee Claflin who are entering who are editing, the newspaper publishing would ho classroom weekly. They also were Wall Street operatives. They were stockbrokers, and they went to a big van of party. And they watch two men. Get a fifteen and a sixteen year old girl systematically drunk and then sexually violated them. And they were bragging about it. The next. Day on Wall Street that sounds like our president. Excuse me. That's a lot to take. Any connections between past and present are for the reader to make. Yes, they do repeat themselves. Well, one of the one of the unique elements of the women's suffrage movement is the emphasis placed on primary documents such as speeches letters and excerpts from various retelling of the suffrage movement. What is the value of reading these historic texts? I think it is that being able to connect directly with the people and hear what they're saying. It's what I try to do with this is to open a door to the past. So that you get as the reader to walk through and listen to what's happening in this meeting. What am I reading in this one of these people saying to each other, but you get to enter into the time period with the people who are actually making the change. Well, of course, if you have a bad editor, you're gonna lose a lot. But that's unfortunately, you didn't I have the best editor in the world though, lower courter. Did you know that she was the best editor in the world? I envy you. O'clock. Also would put my editor up to challenge. No. Would I've really enjoyed working there. Elizabeth my editor was a dream to work with. And I think you, and I are both blessed with having really wonderful editors. Because we're great people to begin with, right? Well, so yes, I did say that. Yes. I did. Well, the Gloria Steinem writes in the forward that the movement was both a miracle of shared purpose and a tragedy of division. Can you explain that further, please? You know, there are some divisions. That are actually I think productive, and there was a time period when it was very possible right after the civil war when the constitution had to be rewritten. Because as we know it had slavery built into it for the determination of of voting. Enslaved people were considered three fifths of a person. So the south atten and abundance of representatives because they had that extra boost it also the constitution called for the return of fugitive slaves. I don't like that term at the gate center. We use the term freedom, takers. There's people took their freedom. But the the three fish person had to be constitution to be changed. And so it was a moment when it would be possible to expand. Band voting rights to everyone and congress played with the idea the Republicans were in control, and they were the the party that opposed slavery and supported women's rights, presumably, but what they decided was we're gonna slam the door on women and not only that we're going to put them back worse position than they've ever been in constitution never talked about gender, but after the fourteenth amendment when they determine citizenship in the named citizens to be protected from the states, and they would they would have just said citizens that would have included women and women might have been able to vote to that. But what they did. Instead was to say male citizens three times in that document, the fourteenth amendment says male city. Zain's men are throwing into question whether women really are. It was an incredible moment of dividing a very strongly and knighted abolition women's rights movement. And there were two separate groups that emerged out of that. And they took different directions. One group the national were for a universal or a Mashal amendment to the constitution. This is a time. When it was, you know, who gets to decide who votes is the states is the feds and the national woman suffrage association said the sixteenth amendment which actually had been introduced after the first fifteen minute gave African American men the vote not women. Just men the sixteen commitment was introduced in congress, which would give women the vote women black. End white the vote. And so the national supported that the the American woman suffrage association on the other hand supported state by state. Now think about what's going on in the country at this time, the federal government has stepped into the south and his protecting the rights of the African American male voters as it should under the fourteenth amendment to the constitution and the neighboring legislation follow that they were doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing. Well, they were beginning to withdraw which meant that the states were rising up again and saying, you know, we get to determine what goes on. And they were starting to pass the Jim crow laws. You know, the ones that were limiting the right educated suffrage laws that would limit the right of African American men to vote or the practice anyway. And so you think about it if I'm a woman asking the state for the right to vote Arnaud also implicitly saying. Well, if you give me the vote when you could take away from black man because you get to decide not the feds. So there's this difference between these two groups that gets reflected in their whole approach. One is more progressive in one is lurking -servative eighteen ninety these two groups heard, and it brings in the woman's Christian temperance union, and the WC team you wanted to get the vote in order to put God in the constitution in Jesus Christ as the head of the government, basically, and it would have destroyed the wall of separation of church and state. It would have meant that you know, anybody that was not a practicing conservative Christian would not be able to vote run for public office. It would've limited. It would. It would have destroyed a democracy and that. Then in addition to that, they become this organization. The national American is the one major organization for much of this time until the women's party grows. But the national American woman suffrage association began to court the south southern races. And they began to make the argument. Look, if you give women the vote, it's a way to maintain white native born supremacy because women outnumber negroes and immigrants and both men and women they outnumber the, you know, the ones you don't wanna be in here voting. So what it will do if you let us though, there are more white women than there are men and women negroes in immigrants, and it will be a way. Take away for you to maintain white native born surpremacy, they practice states rights within the organization, and they let the individual states, do whatever they wanted to do and that included letting these southern states segregate if they chose to northern states as well, it also allowed them to work for Jim crow laws, which they did many of them and to work for the vote for white women only. The movement toward the end, practices racism as policy. What was? Abraham Abraham Lincoln's views on all the going on that were there any comments that he made well initially humid- some comments about, you know, would be valuable for women to vote, but he's dead by this time get gets murdered. And he's not really part of the whole discussion about who's gonna vote and about what's going on with radical reconstruction in the south. Okay. Yes. Of course. For some reason, he. Favorite soul of mine. Did he ever talk about women's rights? You know, he did. And I can't give you I didn't. I don't have it in the book, and I can't give you the direct quote. But there was some support for women's rights. Well, we're going to we're going to do our next break here on twenty first century radio. And when we come back all we've got a number of questions. I can't wait to get to you. We'll be right.

That's why all these stars are losing Gerard Butler lost his home burned to the ground see later. So one cool thing though, a lot of them. I know let's see James woods was one of them. I think some other celebrities they're using their Twitter accounts. They've got millions and millions of followers to help people. Find the relatives. Oh, that was really really nice. And it's Scott bail was another one that somebody. I know they're all people who live in Malibu. Yeah. And it's not cheap living in Malibu. So you know, what? I mean, they're just like everybody else. They gotta get out like now later, and they lose everything. So hopefully, these people took they have precautions set up beforehand. My sister-in-law was very, okay. We'll go to my son's house. Liquor was no big deal. She goes, you know, we could all are important stuff. Locked up in the Bank. We leave Mike. Okay. Right. Well, I'm glad you have that attitude, and I'd be like a scary though, that that's such a normal part of life that they deal with that that earthquakes. Yeah. Riots. California everybody, but slides, okay? And they love it. There. Don't go get me going. I don't know. Why don't know why President Trump is back home and the controversy continuing after French president Emmanuel Macron's comments calling out the president's and the president being a proud nationalist, America. I it's what that's all about. Right Macron said nationalism is the exact opposite of patriotism any Senate while he was sitting next to him only Fritsch. I was wondering if the president knew what what's going on. Is there a translator mixture of telling them that Macron just trashed him nationalism betrayal of patriotism at? No, it's not. And Secondly, should you be saying this to us? Really Louis bailed him out how many times take care of yourself. We'll take care of ourselves is the best interest of the world story. You know? I I think I've shared with you the story about my dad when he was a fighter pilot in World War Two. And when we went to France, we had to go find this church that he and his his squadron. I guess protected during World War Two. It was right in the middle right outside of Paris. And I was like, okay, Dan. So I know for a fact that my father was part of a mission that saved part of France, right outside of Paris. My living proof Macron needs to take his tree back pike down. I wonder how big that tree is at this point. This may be our greatest export. So little. The brewing company is coming out with pot beer that novel of thing. Actually, a lot of companies have tried this is it any good. I I it's it's only in states where pot is legal. They say this is going to be about in Colorado and in Washington, and maybe Oregon, maybe California where obviously pots legal, but do you get a pot buzz from a beer, or is it a beer buzz? I'm not sure it's not just hemp either. I guess it's green wave Belgian style ale. Oh, no, alcohol five milligrams of THC. So you would after. Yes. So you drink to get high. I I have the ingredients instead of him completely instead of it. Wow. So it's like medical marijuana mostly in the bottle. Yeah. I guess I wonder if that tastes like, I didn't know this federal law prohibits the use of marijuana in alcoholics beer, so they had to cut it out there, totally fine. It's totally different product and they're wild. So there you go Jen, how do you like that? See now what they come up with this lake frozen. Pops. Then I just talking to one of those. Like a better idea. I I don't like fruit flavored pops that have THC stick with your Gumbi's. I'm just thinking get ready for controversy next. Now, they've they've narrowed it down the toilet hall of fame the twentieth. Eighteen class what is wrong with these people? It started already that headlines coming up next keep it here.
