"So. Yet. Here, from Green, that's for darn sure. Greenie will. Not You? No No. All all you'll have is green split-screen when that happens I'll tell you that that's for sure that's for sure and he's going to have all the. All. The kids that are young has the second half Henderson for Jacksonville. One wouldn't kill junior for. The. Echoes. Great Rookie I love it. We're we're focused on the jets got. No it's okay. We've got more time I'll have you back on anytime talk you the best next to the time. Really appreciate it are. You got it. That's Todd mcshay of ESPN right here on the rich Eisen show the best. GimMe Minute, here you got. I mean going jets wormhole hair Amazon really wormhole. Okay. Black hole it is. Accent is totally early. It's knee-jerk but you did see Greenie, a Mike Greenberg ed going all in on gas needs to go. He's ruining Sam Darnold I. Don't know if that's because he did rename his children's Sam Darnold doesn't want to rename the Mikhailian Becton. Switch to Trevor and Lawrence I just don't know May I. One of his kids could actually be named Trevor or Lawrence. Those are two first names. Okay. It's possible. Possible. So. Yeah. Jet Phantom is we we are on the edge of the George Washington Bridge Right now looking down. We are and it's open because I. Honestly. Honestly, you look at the roster of people that are round. Sam Darnold and they do not inspire confidence and they also do not appear to be the right type of talent. Amount of talent. To surround this guy so he can. Progress, like we see Josh Allen Baker Mayfield had a game last night. The darnold would have to be hard pressed to have because maybe he doesn't have a running back. They could run at twenty four times four, hundred, twenty, four yards. Maybe doesn't have a wide receiver like Odell Beckham who can get open or a tight end like Austin Hooper I know Chris Herndon his talented, but I think you see what I'm saying and you put it all together and through the attrition of a season that we're already seeing with Levy on bell being on injured reserve. And you look at it scheduled like the San Francisco forty, niners needing a win. Coming in. At Owen one taking on the jets and then you look over the steering wheel and see Indianapolis they have to visit the colts who may have to welcome in Denver, an early Thursday night game. Now, they do have an opportunity to win that game because it's Denver having to travel on a short week and a pandemic. Then, they have cuyler Murray coming into their house, and they have to visit here to Los Angeles before having buffalo come right back and visit Kansas City and then have new New England common before visiting Miami and then there's a Bali. And then they visit my Miami right after the by. Vegas coming in, have to visit Seattle visit the Rams Cleveland than at knowing when there's last three or four on the road and a pandemic in December. Put it all together. For and it's. It's they're they're they're in the running for it there. For the first pick and if they have the first pick in the draft and I know this is four months in advance of this conversation but you can look over the steering wheel and see the road. If they have the first pick in the draft and they do todd mcshay said, they should do laughed about it laughed about it doesn't think they're going to have the first overall pick if not them then who and then if they do have it. And they do trade away. The pick for a king's ransom number one if you're in the AFC don't bother calling. Because the jets making this maneuver. We'll have to watch trevor laurence do his thing elsewhere the entirety of his career. Will be laid at the feet of this could have been you jets and Darnold if Donald thinks the pressures on now. If the jets think the pressures on them now. Oh, my God. Take a break. We are back on the rich Eisen show your phone calls at eight, four, four, two, four, rich check on our poll question set up the second hour with Sham Sharoni about what went down on the Celtics. "She Teas Gas Espn College football analyst Todd mcshay Plus Fox Sports College football analyst Bruce Feldman, and now. You're rich is. Run everybody welcome this dish rich Eisen show here we are on a Friday getting set for the bulk of week to action with Thursday night football kicking things off our friends at NBC sports and NBC sports on Peacock along with our radio network. We're thrilled that you're all here. I, mean NBC sports, you WanNa talk about proud as a peacock Stanley Cup final set. You got the lightning taking care of the islanders late last night in overtime set up Stanley Cup game one between the islander, the between part, the lightning. And the stars that's on Saturday you've got a round three of the playoffs and Nascar, that's going on NBC sports. This weekend you've got the US Open. That's going on right now round two winged foot Bubba Watson having a Nice Day right now I see him picking up on the leaderboard now. Waiting for Justin, Thomas Your leader and Patrick read your leaders to tee off. So at Sunday night football on NBC is you've got. The Patriots and Seahawks. And that's just that's just the Pika. That's just that I mean we're not sports back. This is very exciting. The NBA bubble has got a lot of controversy in a lot of excitement in a lot of intensity in. An actual basketball being played amongst all of it. And News breaking things happening and we'll keep an eye on. I want to start with our friends in Ohio. Exhale browns fans him just for a moment. You'll any ale maybe hold your breath again. But that was a must win territory last night. and. The bengals. brought. One Joseph Burroughs of Athens Ohio to Cleveland Ohio by way of Cincinnati Ohio and Columbus Ohio and all sorts of Ohio. And Joey I think just through his nineteen thousand passive his NFL career last night congratulations Kenny phrase that's record or something. and. They survived all that. Is. Joey as he's known on twitter back doored the. Folks who thought the Browns we're going to win by a bunch last night. But the browns won by five. That's all you need. Thirty, five thirty. To be one and one and I know. What we're seeing on the screen, I'll describe to our radio audience as the statistics of last night's game. And a lot of people focused rightfully. So Baker Mayfield Sixteen to twenty, three, two, hundred, nineteen yards to scores bad tuck interception but outside of that excellent stat line for Baker, Mayfield needed do what he had to do especially finding Odell Beckham on a vertical in the end zone that was good to a lot of folks focused on the fact that Odell scored in Odell was part of the fence that looked really tight in the passing game Baker Mayfield making some nice throws, but it's the stat line of number twenty four that catches my eye. The twenty four rushes for one hundred and twenty four yards and two touchdowns. That's what will make the Cleveland browns twenty twenty season significant. We focus on Baker because he's number one overall and those progressive spots look much better last night in the game than the previous week. And we all focused on Odell for various reasons. We all know why? But Nick Chubb? Matched his uniform number for the number of rushing yards, and the last two numbers of his total of yards matches uniform number with a one in front of it. Twenty Four for one, twenty, four for number twenty, four. That's what we'll get at the Cleveland browns where they WANNA go. It will open up the passing game. It will take the pressure off of whereas Odell where we finding Odell if that is. A pressure as it was discussed certainly after week one. Defensively. myles. Garrett. Came up with. Defensive Player of defensive. Player of the year play what does that sure sack if you will force fumble but that was right after the browns went for it and got stone on the half inch yard line. Kevin Fancy could have gone up eleven didn't. Took took the. took the ball try to jam in there didn't work. Back on the bengals the browns make silly play on defense give borrow a little bit more space a little bit more room in here comes myles. Garrett pop at loose and is Joe. Buck congrats to him. On his. Announcement is the Pete Rozelle? Award winner for broadcasting wing and the pro football hall of fame joining his Dad. As Joe Buck was right on the spot call right away. Browns get the ball back right where they gave up. Then trump scores. That's what a defensive player of the year candidate can do erase. A negative. Of An overaggressive coach perhaps, figuring out that we gotta go for as many points as possible because he sees chopra winging it all over the lot. That's the good stuff. That's what the browns run. The ball control the clock take the pressure off the passing game. Keep that defense of your opponent on the field and put your defense out there that hopefully for them on the back and we'll get more healthy, and now they've got the many by week with the Washington football team coming into their house in week number three, and then after that at the Dallas Cowboys, of course, we will be that's a big fat week for meal. I mean you could pretty much settle Nansen Romo into. Dallas for week four for that call. That's going to be a big game potentially for both teams certainly with Dallas taking on Atlanta this week and.

"So but the Middleton thing I think is a legit concern and he needs to be kind of like twenty five and night if for them with Janas, putting up mass massive numbers and Milwaukee continues from the bubble to have this this tendency and we saw before that but it was definitely something that was brought up more and more. People. Had A decent number three's against them in forty-eight and do anything vucevic terrific. Augustine just steady is not a superstar but was weird loss. We're lost that team the other Games mentioned Boston I thought they were the better team the whole time and got close they're a little bit at the end. But now Gano Gordon Hayward before we extent say that's a huge deal i. mean he's still probably their fourth best player but it's a big deal because he had these moments where somebody else's off. Then he could pick it up for you because he's that kind of score and paid them looked incredible in their first game against Philadelphia. Other Games, the clippers one was weird to be down that. Big to the mavs dodge another one of those insane games you're like, where is this guy ceiling but for pozingas to be thrown out? Especially, it being the back toback technicals where it was like he was thrown out for the conversation just it was a second technical. Steve Javale agreed with it. No breaking news on that one. That Javale thought it was I call. I don't know I would love. He came to push Morris who you knew was gonNA mess with. Donncha. Dodgers in having it with anybody and dodgers kind of twirled away at at Morris and then present his comes over and he pushes them and it's the second technical out of game but Paul. Georgia's great close and that was really kind of A. Difference even though which he had a play against Kawhi, he went at Coli in shouldered in the chest in Gut Kawhi off of his body like he bullied Kawhi Leonard on a drive and the end of this game, all their offense was don church going I can get a layup every single time against the team, even with these wing defenders and that's That's scary man that was like really scared be curious to see how much sooner he goes to that. But with no prisoners, he didn't really have much choice. The other Games Raptors Nets exactly what you'd expect and really Donovan Mitchell Fifty, seven points but a backcourt violation that's unacceptable and what I loved about that game for Denver Cech Murray moments okay. Where are we where he was unbelievable in overtime closing out that game like he was the guy and and Yokich was totally fine deferring them the whole time so that I think if Denver Nuggets, Fan, not to say the mammary hasn't had begins the past but that's just a great. Just a great start for him in this playoff series to get that going again. Because I still think the jazz can hang with the nuggets are probably going to pick 'em and comedy back up the birth of his son. So they got little day one in day to wrap up, and this will be released before the later. Games. On Day two before we get todd mcshay as the original light Beer Miller lite has always been there to bring people together through Miller time in a world where you can't always be with your people..

"Even Charles Barkley Might Trico Rich Eisen. I had the other thing is shefty ten. Gm's I think it was ten. Ten GM's reached out during the actual draft during picks were going on and they looked at the time and I was like. Wow you know the fact that they would stop what they were doing and send a text making sure that I was okay. It was really cool but but the bottom line is I've never felt more support in my life and ESPN. I you know we all love each other. We get along and we have fun when we're together but I've never felt like it's more of a second family than I do now with that support meant to you. I'm much meant you had a lot of support leading up and then they Which was helpful. But I was so tired and so exotic like I was just trying to scroll through. Make sure I got back to the people that really needed to but what I what I started to come to the hospital and got four hundred thirty seven texts. It was a feeling that I've never felt before you know I. I know I have good friends. And I know we're all friends like work friends but to see how many people reached out and and how many times in how the well wishes that they sent. Not just hey. I hope you're good but like sending real legitimate notes that they had to sit down and think about it it mental me. It really will. I will never in my life. Forget it you bring up the GM's on clock and some of those other than multitude of texts that you got. Was there one that really stayed with you? That really touched you. In a way that you wouldn't have thought or you will always remember Rick. Spielman worked with his brother Chris for many years and he sent some really nice texts. Chris Ballard he Chris Ballard. I didn't have a cell phone. He didn't have my cell phone number. Talk when we're at the combine in different things. But we've never exchanged phone numbers. The Colts Chris Ballard Center really heartfelt no during the draft and it opened with. Hey Herbie gave me your number. I hope that's okay myself. Like yeah I it's okay now zone Of of of a note that really stood out. So how does this change your perspective on the world? The sickness his virus. I realized that this you know it's it's not life and death. Just look at the numbers. I mean clearly you guys. You guys do better without me. The broadcast range. I know do the math on it. I'm a trend guy. Yeah so no but I I realized that it's you know you can say what you what you want. And it's all Corny but I realized that it's okay. It's okay and I think a lot of GM's and I've talked to some some jams after are realizing maybe we don't need to do some of this stuff and I'm sure in six months everyone will go back to that. Same Crazy bubble that we all live in. But do you really need a million pro days? You really need some of these things that we do. Can we spend a little bit more time with our family and and less time worrying about some of the little things that really don't matter you know and it was? It was cool when I when I actually did start watching the draft looking at some of the you know the decision makers. They're stuck there in their home. Like Bella check would make a pick and then stand up. Walk away and his dogs there. I watched the Joe Douglas and his kids that I know hugging him for pick. That's okay it's okay to be a little bit more family oriented and not to work. There's some there's a lot of little stuff that we worry about shefty. Had I've always thought like it's not it's not worth it. We're not gaining anything from it really but we do it because it's that's how it's always been done at. I'm hoping that maybe we rein it back in a little bit We'll see what happens on. That's how we're wired right and show something like this. That RECALIBRATE OUR COUNTRY. That recalibrate our lives that recalibrate. Everything just makes you think differently about everything going on in life right at this. I was a change. You have you just like being involved with the draft being different and everything going on around you. It's a great question I I haven't You've had it. My parents lost one of their good friends. My college roommate lost his mom. Three cousins had it. My niece had it And I I think. I'm just amazed at how vulnerable we are as a society to something like this could just take us all down and turn our lives upside down and I think it's good in the sense. That again forced us to spend more time with our families. There would have been a lot of days that I would have been in Bristol. Were going to Las Vegas that I was right here and so that's also good but I'll be me about. It is that this may be like this for a long time a long time and I don't know when this changes in so of the obvious changes how it changed me very Harry Right now. Todd I it's out of my ears my nose my eyebrows. I've got more hair got his truth. Yesterday I saw one of my neighbors. Any was holy. Call Me Teen Wolf for nothing you know and so just a little simple things in life that I thought were simple like I said like getting a massage or five six. I told you that Susan Bristle is. She's great she's unbelievable. Yeah and the next time. I'll get them son. I have no idea man. I love that I love that you know I very simple like right. I work out. I don't much more than that but even the little things like my sister said me this morning she goes. I miss going out to dinner just once. I don't once rather than every single night and it's been so long since something like that has happened and I miss driving through the starbucks. I haven't done in six seven weeks now and just getting no little afternoon. Pick me up whatever. It is just little things a woman that would make my smoothies in the morning. Haven't been into her shop in the two months you know so. It's just the little things like that that I think it changed my perspective a little bit of a smaller sense in addition to the obvious. Let me ask you this. Tell we now in our country have over one point two million cases of the virus. We have at the time recording. This basically seventy two thousand deaths which is more people than died in the Vietnam War. They're going to be a lot more people that can track this virus. They're going to be a lot more hard days ahead. What would you say to them? If somebody was battled this somebody who gets this about what they're about to get themselves into well again? I I feel I feel badly giving an opinion on it or talking about it because I had a mild case and I know there are thousands upon thousands of people who have had it worse but the only thing I can say is no matter what you're doing what you're trying to let go let go take care of yourself. Get to the hospital get tested. Get your rest. Get rid of your phone that to me. I was in a unique period. Obviously because that's what I'm getting flooded with texts and emails and calls and all that for for shows and get ready for the draft but outside of the focus on your core people. You know if it's your your wife your husband. Your children focus on them. I pictured two pictures of my of my children you know not because I didn't have a phone. I had physical pictures one of my daughter in one of my son that you know when I would wake up and kind of a dark place just look at them and that would that would kind of inspire me to just keep keep going and keep fighting and all that but I think I think you've got. I started to get better when I let go when I just let go and rested in. Took care of myself. He'll ask you is later today. Which is amazing. You're going to get the chance to see your son and daughter for the first time since April I. I know you talked about how emotion that will be when you think a hate to that moment. Which by the time. Some people listen to it will have already happened. What is that going to be like for you? I'm going to get off the boat. And they're going to be standing there and I'm going to run down and probably plow over people in front of me and go pick both of them up at the same time if I still can do it and just squeeze them kiss them and and get in the car go back to the house and into whatever they want. Ride Bikes on scooters. Runaround anything we can do. I just can't wait to spend those moments with them and obviously you know hug my wife and hold on tight. It's going to be. It's been a long time man. It's been a long said it's almost forty days and it's a lot has gone on and I stayed in Boston to this being safe. Just trying to make sure that I don't go down there and bring anything. So we're we're in a safe spot now. So it's it's time to go and it's time to see them and it's going to be. It's going to be amazing. I can't wait Laurie. Glorious mentioned say spy so are you now only healthy like what we see you on? Espn soon wherever you at. How would you describe where you're at right now? Fully healthy fully healthy done some stuff with dot com you know five teams upgraded the roster ten players that. I think are going to be great. That are going to be you know impact players this year as rookies and some other stuff. I've talked to to the executives. I'm going to go down and be with my family for a little bit. There's no rush the the way too early. Mock draft can wait a little bit it always. Can you know my mind? It should be December. But it'll probably be somewhere in in early June when I come back in and do some meat back on TV and you can get ready to go. You can give your wife a hundred me let myself. I appreciate your time today. I appreciate its high Monday before red. Glad to hear you sounding warlike todd than you did that particular time and welcome back. We love you. Were very happy that you are safe. Place they've no our basement and I thank you. I thank everyone that this support. I can't tell you how much it meant to me and you are. You are leading the charge. You sent me so many text messages. Just checking in making sure on good and I really appreciate it. I'll never forget it. You're on our minds you must end We are awfully happy to hear that you're doing the way you are not being. Well enjoy your family later today. Brother thank you and the ESPN draft analyst. Todd mcshay and I will say it is hard not to get emotional listening to him. Talk about being reunited with his two children ages four and five and a half getting to see them for the first time since April I. I cannot even imagine being in that situation where you go forty days without seeing your.

"This week's Adam Schefter podcast. It's a special edition of the Adam. Schefter podcast to go along with the one that we earlier this week would be new cowboy's quarterback Andy Dalton in the retired forty niners offensive Lineman Joe Staley the medical director of the NFL PA. Tom Air but this week. We are bringing together a special edition podcast because todd mcshay he great. Espn draft analyst is finally feeling well enough from his battle with Cobra nineteen to come on and publicly speak about it the very first time we had spoken to todd week of the draft but now he has agreed to come on and share his thoughts about what it was like to battle Kobe. Nineteen and where he's at today without further ado the great-aunt mcshea my friend. My colleague Todd mcshay who you've been waiting to hear from for quite some time to last how we spoke. Todd was the Monday before the NFL draft. We thought the draft would go on without a hitch. That was your plan that it didn't so what are we scarred there and say what happened that we that derailed your hopes and hearts that you would be working the NFL draft that week. I was diagnosed with with Cova. N- I had the corona virus and and the scary part is I had a mild case of it and it just lingered because I wasn't taking care of myself. I was preparing for the draft. I had four hundred page book that I distributed internally that we use to for the draft weekend and just the stress of getting ready for the draft and then knowing potentially that I might miss the draft. I think my doctors said that it kind of all added up and I think the most important thing I can say and it sounds like a canned line but my heart goes out everyone that had it as much as I did but certainly worse than I did. I mean there are so many deaths thousands of people on ventilators just fighting for their life and I know the level at the coughing was hard. You know the fever would spike a little bit here and there but the level of exhaustion. I can't even explain to you. Man I mean I was a Massachusetts Kid who went down to Virginia to play football and had two days in August in one hundred degree. Temperatures with ninety seven percent humidity and there were days. I didn't think I was GONNA make it and I'm telling you this was more exhausting. I would I would send a text to Mike Cambria. The Guy He's an executive. Who RUNS THE SCHEDULE? Just trying to check in with him and he respects me right back and I wake up three hours later. If that's how bad it is so I think the most important thing that I can say I just I just feel so terribly for everyone. That's going through this and I'm so grateful for all of the people that that are there in these hospitals working even by my primary care. Physician spent ten days just dealing with this in hospitals. Like it's all hands on deck and it's It's remarkable to see and it's it's tough to to go through entire you. Shed you had modeled case inner mayass. I didn't imagine were key if it was worse. Now where you're not doubt for hours at a time way you're describing right now no I can't and that's that's why I want to you know I'm uncomfortable making this about me. Obviously I missed the draft and we can get into. You know how hard that was but this isn't really about me. It's just it's just about you but this is just essentially. You are one person I was at. I know St- with this virus. You had it so that you know who you are from the great work. You've done a senior on the draft which you weren't on this year. They want you to know what happened. And what it was like and show or a little bit of time here on this particular podcast with all due respect and all apologies. It is about you and I understand. Your thoughts are with other people but I want to hear about you and I wanna hear how dark it was. I WanNa hear our low. You got because I'll bet you there were some low moments that you had during the course of fighting this disease which went on. I might add for weeks. It's it you know so I don't know exactly one when I got it. I know I was diagnosed earlier in the month of April and I thought young enough in relatively decent shape and in better shape than I thought I could fight through it but anyway so we moved with everything going on we moved a TV studio into my office and the Prudential Center in Boston and then two days later the prudential center offices got shut down so then we moved to studio into my apartment and we live in Boston. I've got two children who are four and five and a half years old a wife and a dog and we're in seventeen hundred square feet and they moved the studio and to my my kids playroom. So so my wife was like all right. You're not feeling well. We're we're going to go down to the beach and get away on April first and they left so on April first. I'm here and I'm trying. I'm trying to do hits. I get up in the morning and do a sportscenter. Hit now would go literally atom. Go lay down in bed like face. I in in the my pillow and then set a timer to wake me up to go back to go to get up or whatever the next show us and I was just trying to fight through it and there were a couple of days where I felt like I was getting better and then I just I bottomed out because I just. I didn't take care of myself and I didn't rest. And you know the dark places as I can remember just wrapping myself in a blanket on the couch and you know like when you have the flu kind of shivering and I was coughing and I would just not off for hours at a time and I tried I was trying to get back to producers. I spent fifteen years of the. Espn trying to get on the first. The first night of the draft on on the set and this was like this was the year I finally was going to be on the set with Herbie and Davis and pollick Jesse Palmer I was GONNA be part of that. Abc First Time In fifteen years. And I'm sitting there fighting doing everything I can to try to get there but I just couldn't do it and you and I talked. I just wasn't lucid and I thought I was but I wasn't and then I would send a text can and and then he would text me back as I said before I get back to him. Four or five hours later. He's a bud. You know Miss Three shows so just I was just gone and it got really dark in the hospital when I was just by myself and I knew the draft was going on and I couldn't watch it. I didn't watch the draft until Saturday night. I woke up late that night and there was a re air and I started watching it then because I knew it was over and I for whatever reason I just. I couldn't watch the draft knowing that I wasn't being a part of it wasn't on it and I felt like I was letting everyone down. Union wash the dress until after it was over on replay may ninety two or three. Am I woke up and turned on ESPN and they were running a re a replay to watch it at that time picked up pick seven and at that point. I had let go to be honest and I gained perspective because I was so sick and I was starting to feel better and and so I had let go and I could finally watch it. I wasn't watching it like I would. If I was sitting on the set or or a part of it I was just interested in who the first six or seven picks for and it was a very different view viewing experience I was starting to get a little energy back and I was finally interested in it and not and had let go of like being a part of it. You know it just. I spent eleven months of the year hearing up and working towards that draft weekend and it was. I don't know why I just I could not watch it when it was live for some reason. So what did you do? While the draft was unfolding Thursday night Friday night into Saturday night arrested. I slept and I watched some terrible shows. Whatever whatever I could find on the limited limited cable that I had the hospital so and I just I I would scroll pass the ESPN and ABC just to find something else like I watch magnum. Pi at one point. But that's how bad things were just just to avoid watching it. I can't explain it I just. I just couldn't bring myself to watch. It live knowing that I wasn't there in a part of it. It would hurt that much to watch it. Yeah was exactly. It was exactly. Yeah it was. It's it's my thing it's what I do. It would be like. I don't know free agency for you if all of a sudden and I think what would be like. Is someone spending a year putting together a book or and getting ready to have publish and then when it's coming out ready all there at the end they can't be a part of it right sitting the only way acquainted. I three. There's other things that happened now. That's not really apropos. In your particular you build up to this up to this buildup to this work on this prospect that prospects it goes on all year long all leading up to this three day period in April really the entire month of April. Let's be honest right. Because there's a report programming net goes up but the culmination of it all is those three days and on those. You can't do it right and I'm sitting here sitting there staring at because I pulled out my my draft books and was you know one of them's team. Based in what the team needs are and all those things and the other one is like four hundred ten or four hundred fifteen pages of just every page as a as a breakdown on each player. And I'm staring at the books tonight again. I. I just couldn't open them up and I couldn't watch the shows because I it just it hurt man. It's the best way I can describe it. It's just it sucked it. It was so hard knowing that you guys were all there. The support I got was amazing but just knowing you guys were all. They're doing it and part of it and then I just couldn't pull through mother a few things you touched on but I want to get to. You mentioned that your wife and two children and dog left on April First Yup. How long were you all part? Are you back together now? I'm heading down there to see them today for the first time since.
Bengals at the Combine in Indianapolis, taking a closer look at Joe Burrow
"With us here from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis where we will be all week so much going on. I'm waiting next with Adam. Schefter Louis Riddick Todd mcshay and Mike Tannenbaum just to catch you up right now. Here's what's happening today in Indianapolis. It will be a very busy week. At Five o'clock eastern though owners are expected to meet players to talk about the new CBA which could expand the playoffs and move to a seventeen game regular season. We've got forty seven. Nfl head coaches and GMT. We'll be talking today. You're also hear from SEC. Standouts Joe Borough and to a ton of Aloha who also addressed the media earlier today. Jonesboro put on an absolute show as you know on route to a national championship for Lsu setting an FBI. Single season record with sixty touchdown passes and Ditto. While completing a whopping seventy six percents of his passes and not only that but bro won the heisman trophy in dominant fashion receiving a record ninety point seven percent of the first place votes here. Our previous comments from Joe Borough on February seventeenth during a reception. For the Davey. O'brien award. He had this to say I do have leveraged the Bengals have their process and I have my process. We haven't even gotten to the combine yet. There's a lot of things that happened. Leading up to the draft. A lot of information gathered bras. Mother Robin shot down the idea. Her son does not want to play for the bengals. Saying we have no idea where that came from. It's a story out there that has created that doesn't have any substance at least from our perspective here Hasbro earlier today here at the combine. Of course I want to be the first pick. That's that's every kid's dream you know I've worked really really hard for this opportunity and I'm blessed to be in this position. I'm a ball player. Whoever picks me on my go show up? How play whoever for forever dressing? You know. I'm just not going to be presumptuous. About what they WANNA DO I. It's the draft. You guys have been covered it for a long time and you never know what's going to happen so we played a month longer than everyone else and everyone else's been training a month longer than us you know. I wanted to put. I don't I didn't think I'd be able to put my best foot forward here at the combine so I wanted to wait till pro day had another whole month of training and just be the best that I could be when everyone when. Everyone's eyes are on me. You know coming in. If you're the number one pick the teen is picking number one. Is there for a reason? So you're going to have to come in. There's going to be ups and downs and you've got to stay steady through the process. Our research tells us about Joe. Borough is his own man. He's not going to be talked into saying things for other people's benefits so if that's what he said. That's that's fantastic. I'm looking forward to getting to know him getting to meet him through. The process haven't been able to sit down with them yet. But we've got that on the horizon. We'll talk more about Joe. Boroughs plans to hold off throwing here at the combine. But might I'll start with you in terms of do you want? Do you not want to play for the being. You have any issues at all with where we landed at least at this point. No I mean as I said last week Joe Borough at the end he does not have leverage. The bengals have the first pick in the draft. If they want to draft. Joe Joe Borough. That's where he's GonNa go now with that. Said I think it's incumbent upon sack Taylor in the Bengal organization to create the Right Environment. Where he could come in and they could build something sustainable and truly transformative so. I think where we wended. Wendy is appropriate last week. He could've handled that better but to Joe Boroughs credit. I think they tweak things I think they're in a good spot now. He's been well-coached past week. Tower doesn't it. Yeah and Adema to your Do All your contacts. It appears that borough likely young he's projected pick. I still think that's where the bengals ultimately go. And they're sitting there and that's about this a team that needs somebody to revitalize that franchise and they are expected to look to trade Andy Dalton at some point this off season and so when you're sitting there in division with Lamar Jackson there in Baltimore think that they know that they have to get somebody in there. That's going to put some points on the Board Baker Mayfield Cleveland and this is going to be the pick for the Cincinnati bengals. Even Joe was considering trying to exercise some kind of leverage really the only leverage you have is withhold your services and not playing not report even if he was thinking along those lines. Let's say he's doing a deep dive trying to figure out exactly. Just what the Cincinnati offer as far as developing me as a quarterback. Could you blame him? Could you really blame him for wanting to dig? Deep on exactly what? What does the future going to look like during over the course of my rookie contract with this football team would exactly? What exactly is Mike Brown's commitment to go ahead and building out this roster around me because we all know a lot of what's going to happen to him has nothing to do with him and has everything to do with everything that's going to be around him. Just look at the past three or four drafts. And how certain players have benefited from going to certain to certain teams? Just look at l a look at the difference between jar rookie year in his second year. Sean mcvay came in. It flipped his rookie year. People were saying Jared Goff to Canada. All of a sudden his second year is like. Oh wait a minute. Maybe he's not so bad you couldn't blame him. If that was a thought Lewis to that point I also think an opportunity. If you're Zach Taylor to say hey what's happened in the past. It's irrelevant we're going to myself with you and we're going to build something great and we can't worry about what's happened before we have a lot of work to do. But if I'm the bengals if I have a hey coach Taylor. That's worked with quarterbacks. Like you mentioned Jared Goff Joe Boroughs Billy and character. That's a great opportunity for the bengals. Sino three things one. Is that if something were to go on with. The bengals is not going to happen in public and this has been addressed in the past week if it's going to happen behind the scenes so whatever we hear from this point on. Don't even don't even look at it. Don't think about it because it has nothing to do with with what is going on behind the scenes. The second thing is this guy's different cab he beats. It goes a Beatles drummer. He doesn't care what anyone else has done. In the past what everyone else is GonNa do in the future? He's going to do what's best for Joe Borough but the third thing I know about him is he's a football guy he's his. His brothers played linebacker at safety at Nebraska. His Dad's a almost four decades coach in football. He's a football guy at its core. He's from Ohio. Obviously I think when it's all said and done he winds up going in Cincinnati if he's number one overall pick but again. If it's GonNa Happen it's GonNa Happen. Not In the media. It's GonNa happen behind the scenes again. Joe Bro not expected to throw on Thursday. He said he just wasn't ready yet. Not a huge deal. Sam Darnold Kyla Murray. The last two years have opted not to throw here at the combine as well. What did make headlines on Sunday? Oddly enough pros hand measurements the measurable quarterbacks took place on Sunday on the smaller side. Love listen here's what he said after it was suggested his aunt size was small considering retirement after. I was informed that we slipping out of my tiny hands. Please keep me in your thoughts while he's got good company because here's what Super Bowl fifty four. Mvp Patrick Mahomes had to say who had just slightly larger hands than did borough my small Andrew doing great so far all right he should say believe in yet. Here's borough earlier today addressing his hands. Yeah I mean these measurements you can. You can take so much from them if it's a glaring issue on film with turnovers. Yeah it's probably an issue but I didn't have a lot of fumbles or anything like that so I just tried to make a little joke out of it I think it's a non factor I don't get paid to talk about. Measurements and analyze. The measurements like played to play football. So that's what I'm GONNA do. I look we're not gonNA make too much of this question. Well yet about what? They actually do what they're actually measuring here so worry not. We've got a ruler. We've got Louis at. I mean really what you're really trying to do is just trying to measure the expense of someone and they put it down on the ground and you actually hear about guys actually doing hand exercises to stretch their hand as wide as possible although when you're grabbing a football you're actually going to measure from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the Pinky here and this is hard because this is a hard rule and you can't really get good accurate measuring you look tired type by just under nine right. Look I'll give you a non center's Oh that's attention and would have actually done something with my. I mean what's interesting when you watch the tape of Joe Borough? There are situations where people come from behind strip him when he's trying to move up in the pocket and run. I mean that's going to happen if you have nine if you have ten inches so I mean it's not a glaring obvious problem as far as him on the football field and that's why I think it's really. It's just going to be something that will hopefully wind up forgetting about certain the biggest thing is and you know this with all of these drills you know as well. Mike you go back to the tape and you're trying to find something after the fact that says okay. Now I'm going to look specifically at these things so you're gonNA look cold weather rain and then ball security and Joe Boroughs as good as any college quarterback you're ever going to see in the pocket in terms of two hands on the ball and protecting the ball. I saw him in two thousand eighteen the last weekend. In September against Ole Miss. You can go back and watch the tape. My suit was soaking wet when I did the open of that game. It was pouring rain driving rain in anyone who says it doesn't rain in Baton Rouge on a Saturday night is lying to you. Because it poured and he completed seventy two percent of his throws with three touchdowns and zero interceptions in that game. So you go back to the tape and you try to look at these things and what the tape tells you is. He's just fine. You know I had a theory here. I have an interesting experience with hand size so I was forced out in two thousand eight. We were we trade for Brett Farve and just as a fan of sport. I can't wait to go out to the first practice and watch Brett farve throw. There's nothing physically imposing about breath and he goes out there and he's throwing Abe I've ever seen and I ask them like what is the value. Where's this philosophy comes from it? He said you know what Mike I have long fingers and I actually couple of football the way a lot of people throw a softball. I could actually be over the top and that's where I get all my philosophy from just watching my practice. It was unbelievable to watch though. I know as Lewis show. There's a tradition of how we measure hands but finger. Length is actually an underrated aspect of playing quarterback so far so far small hands but long fingers and you know what my pinky and all the time strong throwing football pictures of the five. It's easily the least important finger in the hand and I can't remember it ever being a big factor. It's all there in the grip. The pinky to me doesn't matter. It's archaic. How we're measuring the quarterback's hand span now with that. Said there's thirty four quarterbacks in the last fourteen years who have been drafted that have had hands of nine inches and smaller and really only two of them had any sort of Sustained Success Ryan. Tannehill is one of them and Jared. Goff is the other. That's it so there are thirty two out of thirty four. Who have failed. But are we going to say that he's going to the Joe Boroughs? Not GonNa have success because his hands tells me that the reason for their failure wasn't because they were nine inches weight.

"There are some guys right right at nine inches. So it's it's one of those things that's it's kind of the Mendoza Line. It's a red flag number. Whatever you WANNA say Joe Nine inches. There there are some guys that have had success. It is a little bit of concern in terms of ball control. But you watch you watch him play and and it was never really an issue you know. I mean he there. There isn't anything that jumps out on tape in terms of throwing the rain or protecting the football. That really concerns you or jump out when you when you evaluate him so you have to kind of have to look at both sides you have to evaluate the tate versus the number but that eight and seven eighths inches is different from nine inches. Whether you like it or not and it's a ridiculous thing to say 'cause it's one eighth of an inch well nine is also the number of bells that he will be at which he will be sitting down on Tuesday in the morning at a podium and meeting with the medium for the first time nine. Am and on Tuesday. And I imagine it's just going to be put to him point blank. Is there an issue between you and the bengals from any any form or format of what gives from the media to Joe Borough are you what are you what are you hearing Amongst your evaluators. Scouts and your contacts. Is there any smoke Is there a fire? What do we got here on the borough and Bengals Front tot? I'm I'm actually really close with with Jordan Paula and he's he's training with Jordan Palmer Yup and obviously Carson has said Carson Palmer has said what he said I I to be completely honest with you. I haven't asked Jordan yet. 'cause I I. I hate asking blunt questions like that to put people on the spot. But I'm going to have to ask him when I when I see him on Tuesday tomorrow. And just see what he says. Because it's it's becoming such a situation and everyone on the League. It's kind of talking about it and it's it's all rumors you know in in any question that he's answered if you really go look at the context. It's because he's been asked that and he comes out. He's a different cat. If you meet with him I've met with him a couple times thirty minutes at a time. And he's a little bit of a different cat and that he doesn't care what you think. And I remember like Brian Greasy and I have done games for the last few years and we. We walk out of meetings especially with quarterbacks and Brian is intelligent as anyone. I've ever been around in terms of evaluating quarterbacks and just knowing that the position and every time we walk out we usually say nine out of ten times usually say that guy was impressive and vice versa or not so sure with with Joe we walk out of the room and I was. What did you think he's like? I don't know what to think I don't either. You know and then you get to know him a little bit more. And it's just that he. He's so confident in himself and he kind of attacks. The quarterback position like a linebacker because his brother play linebacker. His Dad's twenty plus year. Coach is other brother played safety in both of Nebraska. He's just kind of a tough guy playing the quarterback position and so everything about his personality tells me that he's not the type of guy that's GonNa say no or try to pull any ELI. Manning enforcer trade and those sorts of things but the fact that he spent all this time with with Jordan Palmer in and around Carson Palmer a little bit and and knowing that he wants to compete and win you know it makes me concern that there could be something there now. I know and then the connection a Tj who Schmidt Zodda is working with him as you know a wide receivers. He has given more voice to the you know. Be careful like going to the bengals front. I mean I'm paraphrasing and in and then just his comment where he said that he had leverage at one point and again I might be taken completely out of context but he did drop that Ellwood and the question is is like look. You don't have leverage in terms of how long your contract is or what your pay your slotted. So what is the leverage and what leverage do you have unless what? Let's put it this way. What leverage is there to exact unless you intend not to go right? So that's I mean that's and and trying to force maybe trying to force Cincinnati to when free agency starts very soon Force them or at least put pressure on them to go out and get some players and and try to get some wide receivers and try to get a better supporting cast around him. Although they've got talent if everyone's back healthy for the the bengals they've got talent and the offensive side of the ball. So you know I. The leverage thing was the only one that that was interesting because it is a trigger word. And what is the leverage leverage is? I'M GONNA try to force a trade but the problem is if you're Cincinnati. Who are you going to trade if you move to five and you know? There's there's a proposed deal you move to five with the dolphins and get a bunch of picks you could all of a sudden you know wake up and burrows gone to is gone and now you better love Justin. Herbert and I don't see Justin Herbert from Oregon as as a top ten. Pick in my opinion you don't you probably will go in the top ten. I just don't see that. I don't see that on tape inconsistency. I think there's potential there. I think he can develop. I think Jordan from Utah has a lot of potential as well but he's even further away from from being ready to play in the NFL. My point is there are two quarterbacks in the strap and if you don't get one of those two and Joe Burrow into a ton of Iowa then you're on the outside looking in and and I I just don't have any strong conviction in any of the other quarterbacks Pasco's to molly and Tom mcshea here on the richeisenshow let's gain this out a little bit more because the Bengals do have an aunt bengals fans may not want to hear it. It's not like the coverage totally bear. I mean Andy Dalton is there right I mean so you could. You could technically stay the course there. There is Trevor Lawrence next year. For whatever sweepstakes you might want to throw your hat in that ring And also the word is that borough wants to go to Carolina and now the reason why that word might be existing is the Joe. Brady's been hired to be the quarter. There and Matt rule is got seven years. And if you'RE GONNA go to a spot where you know. The owner has made a statement and he's made a statement with his aggressiveness. Getting rule and getting Joe Brady and giving them the contracts and you're concerned about being in a spot where there's a riptide of coaches and offensive coordinators in your whole career is going to go down the toilet because of all that then. That's where he wants to go. How really think that would be possibly talk I mean you can't go to Carol. How do you get a trade with Carolina? Going from seven all the way up seven it would be seven seven up to up to one. I mean that. That's you're talking about second and third this year first next year. Probably I mean the amount that it would cost Carolina to go up and go get that guy in job early and I know I'm sure they love him. how do you not love 'em based off of one of the? Best College Football Seasons. We've ever seen from a quarterback in the history of the game and then knowing that the offensive coordinator who took him from a game manager to that this season that we just saw a national championship and and Heisman. Trophy is there and Carolina. Like I get that. But how do you move up and what? What's the cost to go to go do that? I think you'd have to wind up doing like maybe a trade. I don't know three four somewhere in that range. And then like in the bengals draft him and then trade after the fact something like that where where at least you're not giving up all of that compensation and then you make a deal but it's still gonNA cost you a tone in order to go get one guy. And as much as I love Joe Borough I would rather move back if you're telling me that job doesn't WanNa play for me and that this could be an issue. Well if that's the case I'm not saying it's the case but if that's the case I would rather move back and get a bunch of picks and then next year being the the running for Trevor Lawrence who I think is better than both of these guys than than You know then wind up just stuck there and drafting a quarterback who doesn't want to be in Cincinnati who has nine inch is going to have to play in Pittsburgh and Cleveland right for the vast majority of season. Todd mcshay here on the rich Eisen show. What are you hearing about tool? He's got the tensions we know that but What are you hearing about is? What are you hearing? I N. he's GonNa blow away the meetings he's GonNa come out of this combine with everybody falling head over heels in love with them. The dolphins might fall back in love with them. Based on what? You're whatever reporting you might hear believing what. What are you in about two going in talk? It's all medical. I mean he's a stud. I if if you were and I think i. I don't know if I said this to you before. I know I've said it before but if you were to give me a crystal ball and promised new ten years upheld I would take two over Joe Borough even though I love jober and I don't think there's a big difference but I think to a is that I think he's Special. I think he's special from a leadership standpoint. The poisoning brings. He's Today's NFL. Quarterback JOE is too. I mean they're both so great in the pocket. They have such a great natural. Feel their instincts. How quick they are with their progression reads but to a his deep accuracy is exceptional. It's unique and his touch in timing and his ability to just kind of maneuver within the pocket and go from re to to read three where most guys start to panic in their eyes drop and they take off and run. He's just like I'm I'm cool. I'm good and he. He works through it and that he he almost the ball's coming out almost before you can imagine him seeing what he's saying and so that's that's what makes him special to me so. I know the same things that everyone else. He's a phenomenal football player. He would he would arguably be the first overall pick if he was healthy and didn't have the hip injury. And it's all GonNa come down to medical we've seen progression and it's good progress but there's so much more to learn and the interesting part for me. Rich is the game of chicken. That's GonNa go on between the dolphins and the medical report because the dolphins are the team that has that are able to go five picks in the first two rounds three and the first first round there the team that has the most ammunition to move up and go get him..
Tua Tagovailoa's Recovery Shakes Up the NFL Draft
"Time last year to ten goodbye. Loa was the consensus number one overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft but when a devastating hip injury in November ended his season at Alabama his NFL future was cast into doubt now with new reports. That too is recovery is on track. Teams are debating whether his elite talent is worth the risk and the entire draft. Looks like mystery? I mean at times? It's Tuesday February. Eighteenth this is espn daily presented by ADT. Todd Todd mcshay is an NFL draft in college football analyst for ESPN so todd. The last time we saw Tunga Velo on a football field. He was getting started off with a hip injury and it ended his season and Alabama title hopes along with it. News broke last week regarding the status of his recovery. What we know now well first of all I was there that day and it was brutal to watch behind. He's down to us. Down Helmet came off. This is exactly what you did not want to see happen and I was probably ten. Maybe twenty yards away from him as the to. Mississippi state defenders converged on him. And you could just tell right away. Something was wrong but then I saw the bloody nose at first and they said the trainers got. The plastic wraps in there has the gloves on their hands and and I just thought all right. They're they're just taking care of his nose and he'll be done for the day and then he went to stand up and you could tell just how deep his knee drove his leg into his hip that something was seriously wrong so it's good to hear that he has passed his first test. If you will sources confirm to ESPN at the most recent tests show is healing well and has good range of motion to what could get back to football activities in a month if he continues to progress well and is now moving onto the second phase of of the Rehab and recovery stage. There's still a lot left to determine and there's still a lot of rehab to go so that's going to be the biggest thing in terms of his evaluation between now and late. April's draft is where is he? And what are the doctors really? Think about the long-term WanNa talk to you about his injury and the draft. And you know the time line for all of that but I I wanNA talk to you. About what a good football player he is because prior to that injury he was the base star in college football. And you've been watching him for a long time wind it I strike you. This guy's got this stuff how `bout that throw in the national championship talk. He had never started a game and now he's in the National Championship with the game on the line he was coming off of a bad play was able to shake it off. He's keeping his is down the middle of the field and he's working that safety just a little bit to the right. He's trying to move the safety as much as he can because if he does. He knows that he has Smith's breaking down the sidelines. The is move the safety just enough for him to go back to Smith and make the throw of the year. I mean he just knew the spot that he had to get it to and to come in the second half and to have the confidence to lead Alabama to a victory. That kind of told me everything about him. And from that point he kept developing. But if you go back and just really study his tape the things that make him special his deep accuracy is as good as you're gonNA say he's so quick twitch he's like a drew brees from the left handed side you know just how how works in the pocket and goes from one read to the next but keeps his is married to his feet. He fits what you want in today's NFL. But is he going to be healthy enough to with that hip recovery to to have that quick twitch nece and and the ability to to move as quickly as he has tie? You're around these players but also these programs. What did you hear about how to? Oh was handling the injury in his rehab process. Everyone loves him. There's a calmness and a poise about him that you rarely see with with college quarterbacks or any college player so. I'd like to leave you with this from one of my favorites McGraw songs. When you get where you're going don't forget turn back around and have the next one in line. Always stay humble and kind so confident but so humble talking. Nfl SCOUTS IN GM's not a negative word about him. He's a special human being and wherever he winds up going. He's going to be the face of the franchise obviously but he's kind of a culture changer if you will and and. I think that's part of the draw in part of his value. It's not just this injury right. He's had other injuries that have caused him to miss time. He broke a finger sprained. A knee injured his quad. The ankles even before all of this. How much of a concern with that? It's a big. It really is a big concern and the problem is if you study the history of it if you look back. I think it's the last ten years or seven quarterbacks that had college injuries there were first round draft picks that all of them have had some varying kind of durability issues in the NFL from Rg. Three to SAM. Bradford Shawn Watson Marcus Mariota Carson wentz Teddy Bridgewater Jake Locker. All of these guys have gone on to have injuries now. They're not always the same injuries. Some guys are are just injury-prone and just knowing. Nfl teams in the amount of time and the amount of studies that they do. Especially at this position. Especially with first round picks. That are going to cost you. When you're talking about quarterbacks in the top ten twenty to thirty five million dollars in guaranteed money they're doing the research on this and they all know this. You know your job over the course of these college football seasons you're not just evaluating these players you're thinking about where they'll be drafted if to ahead gun her at that point in the season where do you think he would have gone. I think he would be the first overall pick. I think if two was healthy Cincinnati would be taking to a number one overall. I really do if he didn't suffer that injury. We would be having a great debate between two a ton of Iowa and Joe Borough but ultimately my guess is that too would probably be the decision at Number One and knowing Cincinnati. They'd probably they do something to maybe move out of that spot. Make a mistake and let Miami or the chargers Carolina come up and get that pick. If I'm being honest he's he's better than Joe Borough and I love Jober but if you tell me these two guys are going to have ten year careers with no injuries. I'm taking two but then I've got a measure. R Joe Borough has been durable. Jost has shown the ability to kind of fight through pain a little bit more and to stay healthy and so. That's really the deciding factor. In my opinion I have to ask you know. Why do you think he's better than borough? I mean rose coming off of arguably the greatest season we've ever seen by college quarterback. What is it about two as game that you prefer? If I knew he was going to be healthy I think he just kind of fits a little bit better in terms of what what the NFL is today. Terms of getting the ball out quickly and being decisive and then also when you take shots down the field. But I I love Joe Borough to if I WAS CINCINNATI. I would take her over to because of the durability issues. Borough is worth the the first overall pick and I think Cincinnati would be making mistake if they didn't take jober tied. You have to take proof your analysis because you're gonNA get clipped saying to us better than Joe Borough and that's GonNa Follow you forever. You've been spending too much time around.

"For for. La Played Really. Well it had a great game the safety he's going to be a top ten pick. Did nobody tell Jerry. Did nobody tell Jerry Judy how highly he was going to be drafted and tell tell him to sit out the virgo. Nobody did nobody get in his ear. Todd come on come on I mean I love it again bump if his dad I'm saying don't play but I love the fact that he played in. Every evaluator loves the fact that he played. He had nothing that he had to show show or play for. He's a top ten. Pick he in CD LAMB or two receivers. That really had not very at least. CD was playing in a semi final the game for Oklahoma right so it was understandable and everyone expected him to play Jerry. Judy only out there and playing against Michigan. I thought it was awesome. I love that. Could this could this could this be an AJ green. Julio Jones situation with the two of them yeah absolutely I think those are the top two guys who I coltie Martin is going to be coming out of Clemson but but I think Judy's in twenty years of evaluating wide receivers evaluating players I. He's the best route runner I've ever evaluate. Yeah WanNA draft Clayton up the biggest. He's not the fastest. He's GonNa run a four and five and it's all good. He's he's just like Marvin Harris knows how to get open. He knows how to get open. and CD is great after the catch and is tough and physical and does all the little things but those two guys are in my opinion. Both were top ten picks all right last couple of questions for you. Todd you hear anything about Lincoln Riley maybe going to cowboys anything at all on that front. I haven't heard anything. I haven't heard I've heard some other names. I mean I've I've heard his name. I didn't talk to him about it. He he was asked the question in. He couldn't have run away from the question fast enough obviously he did not specifically say that he was not taking aching job or would not be interested in he just ran away from the question. And then last thing for you I give you Three I put you to desk. I give you a sharpy. I'll give you a pencil and then a pen in an old Jar Container of of Whiteout which kids might not know but I give you. I gave you those three items. What you used to write down Joe borrow and chase young one two in the draft? What are you do sharp now? Do you didn't even stutter. That's going to happen. Borrow bengals chase young redskins. That's the way it's going to go and you can play his back. Just like someone's GonNa play back Martin Winston Watson stuff. Sure got it todd. I loved everything you did the here. And you're on On the call my son and I watched the Orange Bowl was great. Good Times a happy new to you. Of course happy New Year to you and yours. Let's chat Often often place look forward to catch. You got right back at you. That's todd mcshay at mcshea. Thirteen sharpie quick story a quick story based on what he said about Joe Borrow. I was just a newbie though. He's a veteran evaluator. Football Standing Standing My First Super Bowl. I super bowl that I was covering for. NFL Network first time ever on a field for super bowl because we were doing. The Post is game. Show the we being me and Solomon Wilcutt. s- oh solid man. They say director's chairs on me and him as the NFL films crew. That was working. The international channel feed were the ones who stuck around to broadcast it. Because del Tufo and the rest of the NFL network. Gang was off to the protocols. That for that I stayed behind standing there. You heard how he said that Joe Borrow through what he said a fifteen yard In cut so what. He said something like that something like that and he took the hit and as he released it was heading straight for an Oklahoma sooner until one of his receivers just came and swooped in. Oh okay. She's thrown into a spot. He's trusting trusting is receiver. He knows the route he knows the coverage. He knows he's going to take a hit. He's delivering the number of times. I watched Tom Brady. Eighty matriculate the ball down the field against the Carolina Panthers in the last possession of that super bowl that wound up with another vegetarian game winning field goal for a super bowl. All the number of Times Brady let the ball go took the head and I thought they are goes in interception. There's the game and a member of the Patriots receiving core just zipped right and and caught the ball for perfectly run route and throw. I lost track telling demand everybody calls this guy a Tom Brady like talent. What a huge compliment? And of course a huge potential the anchor going into your professional playing career but he is off the charts good and two if two is going to be sitting here right Mike now getting an opinion from a doctor saying come. April can't guarantee you. Now I can sit here. And wonder why he would consider going back to Alabama but if I was him and he went back to Alabama. I would say guess what I`Ma Coaches assistant and I'm going back to school like Thornton Melon. I might do the triple Indian the pool. That is all I'm going to do because he thinks you know what. I can't risk getting a medical report in April that there's another eight months to go. He can't risk that. And then there's the biggest question mark of him. What can he do after being gone for as long as he was gone? But I would still. I don't know is I just told you. Evaluators are going to WANNA draft them. Owners are going to WanNa half are are going to fall in love with them and so will coaches and they're all GonNa look at the medical staff and say. Tell me something good. Wow that's all common Monday. Your phone calls at eight four. Four two zero four rich coming up next on the rich Eisen show. Hey listeners just wanted to take a minute to thank all of my great sponsors and all of.

"The bengals would take them that. Would it'd be my my opinion if he was healthy if he was completely healthy but it just it really comes down to where he is not only for year one in terms of the recovery. But is this something and I've heard different stories from different medical people but is is this something that's going it'd be reactivated and become a career problem. Where three or four years down the road? We you know we lost the guy that we spent the number one overall pick on so that that that one's trickier Justin herber is more of A. He's the the football valuation is the tough part. Because he's he's big strong he can run. He has a big time arm. He's a lot like Josh Allen with the bills. When Josh was coming out Wyoming He's very smart but he's very introverted. He's Kinda the opposite of what you think of when a quarterback walks into the room and I think. NFL teams are going in a struggle with that any other quarterbacks dip it into the top First Round Jake from is the smartest quarterback. I've been around a long time on Georgia quarterback he has physical limitations but he. He's the type of guy that overcomes it Jacob easson needs another year. He was the the well he wants to start her. And then and then he got injured from beat a mode of Georgia and then transferred to Washington Eastern probably if if he decides Komo early. He's the most physically gifted quarterback in this class in terms of pure talent. But I really think he needs another year Washington aside from Cincinnati. Miami who will definitely draft a quarterback who definitely The lions could. You know they're sitting right now like five. That range Jacksonville I wouldn't rule out where arline again the Carolinas do. What the what are the chargers GonNa do? What's going on with Jon Gruden and in color There are a lot of teams that they're interesting this year more so normal. I took the last few years. We've had more cornerbacks than we pat teams in the top ten have needed them I think I think the Broncos are happy with what they have but you never know Just going down the raiders. Pick again at sixteen the the buccaneers or are they are they happy James. Even though he's you know he's played well recently. But Teddy Bridgewater and Cam Newton where they end up if if they end up with another team and then how that affects the draft. No question but I I. The point is in the first sixteen. Eighteen picks there are about eight or nine teams. That potentially could have interest in quarterback is Washington sold on Dwayne Haskins Who are you asking the owner? Well the owner I know is but but but if I'm a coach I coach you get has got to be sold on him as well where he's not taken that job so I i. I've been holding back from calling urban this week wondering what what he was doing in the box I if the current structure I can't I couldn't allow a friend to take the job without saying now. If you get a new general manager wait wait are you. Are you the friend urban to tell him not to take this job. I'm just saying hypothetically okay. If any out there I would make the phone call and say make sure you got a football guy who's in between the owner and you and and you can completely run the football stuff you can make the decisions. I mean that that's the issue right now under the current construct Washington can't succeed. They need Daniel Snyder to take a step back. They need to hire a general manager that knows capone and can evaluate players and then they need a coach who can take those players and develop them. Would you rather coach Washington or Dallas Dallas. Yeah Yeah between those two. I'd rather coach Carolina. I think Dallas but you know I just rather coach any team in. I'd rather coach thirty one. Other Teams Shington in Washington right. Now don't sugar coat it. I won't okay todd great to talk to you and Merry Christmas and thanks for the mock draft all right there. That's todd mcshay. ESPN NFL draft analyst. There man that brutal not that you need a friend to step in and tell urban hey dear really want this and you do have some of your former players there but is that enough. The two questions I have if I was going to be a coach for a team. I want to know what my owners like being around him. Who EZE which is personality? How involved Izzy is he willing to go the extra mile you know? How important is winning to him? Is this his main business or is it a side business here and then I want to know who my my quarterback is. I would start in in that order because if I have an owner who is going to listen to me. I feel like he understands football because there are times when you've been in situations before in and people in this business where I go. I don't think that person should be in that position and I think you have an owner. Who shouldn't be involved in it? Who is that would make me really nervous? Because I can have a quarterback that I may not be all in on but the owner is the constant there. The quarterback is interchangeable angel. The owner is not take a break. Last call for phone calls close up.

"Oklahoma state's got some ballers like they competed out there. That wasn't an easy win for Texas so you know to see Oklahoma State may be better than people thought because of the lack lack of schedule and have an unranked like that wouldn't be new for the pokes but I just it's really easy to just go. Hey Oklahoma's better. Maybe that's still the right answer but I think that's what every other conference has to worry about is the winner of that game. I think first of all there are two of my favorite coaches in the country and for very not very different reasons Lincoln is you sit in a room of Lincoln and it's like I get it. You know he's he's so smart so humble about it you. Don't you know it doesn't come off as I'm trying to tell you how good I am. It's just like I'm trying to talk ball and and trying to give you some of the answers than he just respects the game so much and you understand why he's literally I. I'm telling you there are at least or at least five. NFL teams that would take and their situation now now and hire him. That's how respected he is and by the end. I'm talking about right now. Just ridiculous I by the end of the season. Maybe a third of the League May maybe more that's how respected he is and when you said when he it's it's just like talking to him. You're here. You're sitting on the plane next to a really nice out the average personality guy and you like he just won't let you know how smart he is but you know how smart he is and he's just he just gets it and he cares about the players lawyers and all that and and Tom is just he's fiery and he's really smart offensively to he doesn't get enough credit for that and I remember I spent a year with urban. Remember over the whole fall going down every single week spending the day at his house and watching he would put put on tape after tape after tape. I think was at Iowa state at that point of watch this Guy Watch what he does. Watch the count this and so that that was that was not a surprise when he wound up hiring. Tom Herman is is offensive coordinator Ohio State Thomas because more like I said fiery and and just you just get after you then demands it and they do it in different ways so I love both of those guys. I think Oklahoma we have so much in the tank in terms of talent. I think Texas is capable this year of doing it for the first time because I think they've recruited well enough. I still would give the edge Oklahoma but I think the gap is closing and and I think this is one of the big reasons because he's he's just got something. He's just he's a warrior. Is An urban wanted you to work for him. he never really. I mean he inquired about like what I WANNA do in life and we had a lotta long long good talks no that's when when we were doing game that game day hits and all that stuff and I went down. I was the first time shelly his wife. It's the first time I knock on the front door. I didn't know where to go. She opened the doors like all right. We you and I need to talk before you can go to all this TV. He stuff like okay. Yes ma'am Sunday. I loved I loved him. It's not just you know I just about the draft stuff. She's like all right. I just need you understand tvos like a son to me and I didn't like all the negative Gasman expand sorry awkward. Did she apologize for you being right no no never do that. Do they. All good nine. Oh I feel like I didn't really ask him about the SEC you have before. We let you go one. Sec Eh observation something real juicy. You haven't even share with anybody yet I don't know whether it's a talent thing you know. Bam was get six of the top twenty twenty in your in your latest first round thing. I don't know if that's really interesting because I'm not going to sit here and say this is most Calicut Bama team or all these different things but Gimme a sense sense of yeah. Just give me something. I'm I'm not even asking a question the best todd mcshay. SEC take is the same stuff man six Bama players in my cop twenty anyone thirty two players drafted in the last three years ten last year twelve the year before and ten the year before that and they still go have six in my top twenty one. It's it's just insane and I are. Auburn's got one with Derrick Derrick Brown defensive tackle. LSU's got one with a grant Dalton to safety they got you unless you get to a Christian Fulton cornerback Georgia's along with the with the Andrew Thomas the offensive tackle obviously from his down a little bit but somewhere in the top forty. It's just I do think Auburn's a little bit better than people think it's going to be bone ickes thing yeah and I'm GonNa keep getting better her Jimbo's. Tim is going to recruit well there. He's got a lot of resources. Let's put it that way the water resources when I looked at your top ten because I'm going to Judy love. 'EM DELPIT love him. A kudos love them chase young. I freaking love. I Love I mean love and that. was you know getting to see him in person tax or anyone I to me. He was a sideline guy so that was like okay. I'm going to watch him him and watching him from the sideline. It was another experience altogether and his motor yeah. I always think it's a little unfair. Not Consistent motorists like are you run into another dude. Seventy plays plays and tell me how locked in you're going to be every fucking snap we're allowed to swear on this podcast but when I when chase like he's going then I look at herber and then Derrick Brown you just mentioned auburn see lamb Oklahoma size on top of everything else although stews are wide open all the time Fulton and then rugs like that this top ten it feels at least maybe too early status but this top ten look stacked for next year. It's really good and then a depot from Stanford. Nobody knows about gets overlooked. I'm just looking at the back of the endzone a couple years ago right the corner corner. Yes and I forget the and like made Dylan's always plays and that wanted Paulson Paulson a depot from Stanford. He's like six. Two who long arms and former receiver just makes plays on the ball. Jacobsen is GonNa get in the mix whether you like it or not Ray Kwan. Davis had some bad influences last year. It's been a better better place this year and you know what talk honestly asleep to us about. It and I was really surprised. It was one of the more mature conversations I've had with the player in in my years of doing it like you know I just I wasn't living up to who I needed to be and my family told me and when these are it's one thing for a coach to tell you and your family tells you you're blowing it. You know you start to get it and he's he's a freak man. Let me let you go in this one five years from now from this class the best defensive player in the NFL will be can't show yeah. That's what taught I mean. I'm willing to admit I don't know what as well as you did but the best back I think that would be my bet. I think he's more talented than in both houses just naturally and I think he's starting to learn to hand combat and all the things that the has learned to to become as special they are and you put that combination together if it happens. I think he's going to be break todd. I know we went long here. Thanks a lot dude. I really appreciate you can check out all of his work on. "todd mcshay" Discussed on The MMQB Podcast with Peter King
"Yeah. Welcome to the Peter King podcast. Right. Tried to tell you about football and life. But this one's going to be short on life. This was going to be very long on football. Because as I record this after ten o'clock on Tuesday night, March twelve the NFL has gone headlong into bedlam over the first two days of this free agency negotiating period and trading period. We're going to talk about the Odell Beckham junior trade, but I wanna tell you a little bit and pardon me. I'm a little sick this week. But I want to tell you a little bit about our guests. I'm gonna have to Rosenhaus agent to the stars. He's going to discuss the Tonio Brown trade. The rob gronkowski status Willie retire won't he and what the Antonio Brown trade might mean to the. To the long term future of the NFL as it relates to big big stars were also going to have Todd mcshay the ESPN draft analyst, you know, it's crazy how things happened so quickly and the new cycle just goes on and on keep spinning and spinning. But by the time you hear this. You're gonna be wondering, hey, I wonder how Cuyler Murray didn't is pro day at Oklahoma. That's sort of a big deal for the guy. Who's got a very good chance to be the first pick in the draft. So we're gonna talk about all of those things in a moment. But first I want to get into a little bit of what exactly happened and how the New York Giants seven months after signing Odell Beckham junior to a record setting contract for a wide receiver just seven months and after twice. Ice the general manager of the New York Giants Dave Gettleman said we did not sign Odell Beckham junior to trade him. So why in the world did the New York Giants trade him? And secondarily, why in the world of the New York Giants trade him for a good, but not great safety young safety Gibril peppers. Of mid first round pick the seventeenth picking the draft which the Browns have in the April draft and a late third round pick actually the last pick in the third round the last regular pick the ninety fifth selection in the third round which the Cleveland Browns own from the New England Patriots from The Danny Shelton trade last year. So I think everybody could sort of understand why the giants might want to do this to reasons. Pat Shurmur the head coach of the giants last year, basically said I really want a chance to coach Odell Beckham junior. He's a great talent. I wanna see what we can do with them. And Odell Beckham junior is is difficult. He's a tough guy to have on your team. There's no question about that. I guess what? I maintain. Chain about this is I'm sure that that patch Shurmur who had to sign off on this deal. Pat, Shurmur, basically said this guy's pretty tough. And if we can get something good for him. I wanna start a new now one of the guys who was part of the drafting process in two thousand fourteen when the giants picked del Beckham junior. Mark Ross was on NFL network on Tuesday night. And now, here's a guy who helped draft Odell Beckham junior. And so he said on NFL network. There's no one more distracting than Odell even on his best day. So although I understand how difficult Beckham is..

"The program taught you part of the two hour window that he SPN's putting on the air this weekend. I am more we're excited. So it's the first year since younger not even with ESPN that I've actually been able to get into the combine. And and unfortunately, I won't be watching you as much but other than that. It's all positive. I appreciate you bringing it back to me Todd. But so did you did you did you run a forty at the university of Richmond or or what? No, guess I mean, I ran one. But it was not certainly part of any combine and didn't run it very fascinating four four eight nine somewhere in that range, six long hundred hundred ninety five pounds. I know excuse to be that's what would Todd mcshay the evaluators say about Todd mcshay the football player or they say, try hard guy. You're. Your. Dave it every every bit that he had the t h g the try hard guy, the t h g co system doesn't move. Well. Give you everything scouting tastic. I love it. All right. Let's let's let's dive into it right here where where are you on your quarterback board a right now Todd who's who's number one on it for you? I've got Haskins, but I've got I've got him. Basically, you know, one ticket head of kinda Murray. I think it's really those two to me. And I think after that you've got a bunch of guys that. They you feel good about could develop into a good backup in the league. And maybe a couple of them potentially. There's some starting ability there to relax from zuri. Daniel Jones from Duke Ryan Finley who I think is is underrated. But doesn't have any any while skills about him coming out in North Carolina State Jarret stidham from Auburn will Greer from West Virginia. So there is that. But to me, the only two guys that have true I around grades are Haskins and Murray, and they're both one year starters Haskins is nearly as mobile as Murray, but he's more repair passer and Murray if you hit on them, and you have the right system and utilize properly could be an absolute home run. So then which the buying is an athlete, which is the teams that check those if boxes Todd. Well, you know, you've got the giants sitting there at six, and I think that that to me would make a lot of sense for Haskins. Then you've got Jacksonville at seven. And then after that, you know, you have to look at Cincinnati finally try to make a move and make a change or Miami. What direction are they going to try to go? They need to to handle their quarterback situation as well. So those are those are four five of the of the top teams. I think in the first half of of the first round now. And you said though, all the if things that need to be hit for Mario. You gotta have the right coach the right offense the right system the right at cetera et cetera. Would the Jaguars be that team at number seven? I mean, let's let's let's see who's possible here because we're Suming. Let's just assume nobody trades up in the top five because they get antsy over Haskins knowing that the giants you're gonna take him. Let's just say that that happens. So that means the. The teams that will have a shot at taking Cuyler Maury. Are the Jaguars the Broncos the Bengals the dolphins at thirteen? Although I hear that they're tanking for two like starting now, which is absolutely crazy to guard..

"All right. Couple of phone calls in there and mentioned Todd mcshay will join us. Coming up here in a little bit couple of the things when you look at matchups this weekend. And we we had the game of the week. Ravens chiefs is that the game of the weekend. Eagles. Cowboys is is tasty because it's the Cowboys. And if the eagles would happen to win now of a sudden that changes a whole lot here. Yes. For to go Rams bears one. But ravens chiefs. I think is a strong second especially with both more trying to hang onto that succeed in the wild card number one scoring defense number one scoring offense. The Mark Jackson getting the start against Patrick Mahomes. The ravens are game back a Pittsburgh in the loss column in the north. But you that defense has been great. They're stingy. They don't give up many yards number one in total yards. They have thirty five sacks best in the NFL. And you probably can't name if I if I take away. Suggs in Wetzel, I'm sure there's a Smith in the secondary. There's there a Williams there as well. Brandon Williams, of course, of course. But the ravens because it used to be you could name the ravens defense because they were all pros this time around and they've done a great job there. And now you've got Lamar Jackson going against Kansas City. Can you control the ball? Can you keep Patrick Mahomes off the field? Can you put pressure on him? So that's that's a spicy little match up there. Yeah. Paul do you? See your cheese picked up former wider, Shannon for the bell bills. Coming band. Yeah. Surprised? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I I don't know if he loves football when you see him, and you go now, that's a man that's a grown, man. And then you watch him play. It doesn't play like a grown, man. But this is your last call. This is it and I was surprised Denver. Didn't pick him up. Kansas City picks him up Denver needs wide receivers. And they didn't pick him on. Yes. Mclovin. There is one tweet that I I really liked that he was disappointed when he found out. It was Casey KFC. Mean-spirited whatever he killed, my friend, Nathan Peterman career singlehandedly. He's an interception. Sees the one day to beat them ninety percent of his picks Calvin Benjamin Walli gagging around and throwing away at every other. Are you? Sure, are you. Sure. That nine hundred show the pick six against Texans watch the row Calvin Benjamin pretends to run it is unbelievably lazy. I'm by the way. I totally sure about that. Because any bills fan will tell you Calvin Benjamin was a killer. Oh, yeah. I don't want him. But now you've got two bills. Former bills on the team Sammy Watkins and Kelvin Benjamin. We're gonna find out how good Patrick Mahomes is like anybody can make Kelsey look good or tyreek hill. Now, they make you look good. Can you make Kelvin Benjamin? Look good feel lot tougher for him to blame the quarterback now. Yeah. Yes. Mclovin. By way, you mentioned that the Jags were built to play from head or the raven the same way if they get up seven nothing in this game, they're gonna play four corners, right? And just but if they fall behind Lamar Jackson throw. I don't I don't know if being up seven nothing is going to change the philosophy of Kansas City. And know, I mean Baltimore are they're up seven nothing. Are they slow it down for the rest of the game? Oh, yeah. If you can't I mean that would be my philosophy against Kansas City because nobody can go toe to toe with offensively. The Rams did. But it's really it's rare to be able to go toe to toe. I want every possession to mean something when Mahomes gets on the field. I want to add even more pressure to you have to score against us. Because if you don't we're going to have a seven minute drive, and we might not even score on the seven minute drive. But we're going to take time off the clock. That would be my approach if you're you're gonna face Kansas City already Seton. You've got another meet Friday song for us. Do you wanna go with a another holiday wish your why not or do you want to well actually here? Why don't we play a man in California? Because I know that this will get you in. Okay, here we go. Mark..

"Marcellus travis espn la all right so you mentioned this yesterday all right the guys that do the mock drafts most famously todd mcshay and milk hyper and their junior accuracy rates right or lack thereof kind of an interesting little here because stay look backdraft is over what we're going back their mock drafts and let's see how they did along the way i can't believe we're looking first pick in the nfl draft is we all know cleveland browns take baker mayfield with the number one guy typer junior you gotta right oh oh good gets it right with baker mayfield from oklahoma todd mcshay take a look here he loses sam darnold number one ignat to cleveland so he misses right there i'm moving on to the second pick in the draft saquon barkley from pan penn state going back oh no copper hot star two for two saquon barkley number two on todd mcshay so he got one right thing naming thanking it's that one right moving on number three sam darnold nope todd mcshay mrs with baker mayfield keiper feeling it three for three event you say good vet you know what i may pay attention the next time because yeah let's see three for three that's pretty darn good number four everybody got this right let's see both mel and todd had bradley chubb at the four spot and maybe this because they're the browns and the browns do things like the browns took dens award so nobody got that one right.

"Schefter podcast we'll be joined by the draft mavis mel kiper junior and todd mcshay themselves will tell us who won the draft who is eight for the two thousand nineteen draft the best quarterback for that draft plus we'll be joined by the bengals seven time pro bowl wide receiver aj green but first milk hyper and todd mcshay thank you for joining me today i appreciate that and let me see if you feel the same way but i say the end of the super bowl sorta like finishing finals in college during the winter term and then finishing the nfl draft is sort of like finishing finals in college at the end of the year where you know your summer break is appropriate or not absolutely that's the perfect analogy when the season's over i'm i sit there and talk to guys like greasy who i work with and herbie and all those guys and they're talking about going on vacation and where where their plans are and seeing their family and i'm like i'm just not even a quarter of the way up the mountain but now i mean tonight when i get in that car eighty four to ninety east new man the tunes are on the windows are down life is good how you feel about actually okay my leg was really bothering me the two weeks leading up to the draft which it always does i think a lot of stress related but at the end of the day adam you know it got through at somehow i think adrenaline and you get going in your keyed up and i got mcshea getting jabs in his sparring partner here to keep me going and it really does help because i think you know having tied to have that opinion and if we get into our era our differences and we move on it's fun so i think you can overcome a lot with the focus on the when you're sitting.
