How BrightArrow Uses Technology to Deliver Solutions Through the Pandemic

"You know it strikes me that you're sort of at the center of this transformation. We've been seeing over less fourteen months. Oh right the technology is being deployed because our work and life and schooling have all changed drastically. We've gone through this time. Like no other and both schools and learning have greatly been impacted and have needed to radically shift. Can you tell our listeners. How that's impacted you little bit. More by the technology is deployed. There certainly impacted our company because of this the dramatic increase in usage in. This really started last march. We beat the par servers Beefed up our services. We had a day on march thirteenth of last year where our usage was a thousand percent of our peak usage any days prior to that and so we increase our capacity by on the order of ten times in what that's allowed us to do then is is opened up the door for people to do a lot more with our system they have been able to do before and there are a lot of things that are going to be permanent. When example is meetings before the pandemic very few people really at done video. They had not done zooms very much. It's suddenly everybody's become the zoom expert sam. And what are the challenge. And they're going to continue doing that. It's not like suddenly it's going to stop when the pandemic's over people are going to keep doing it. Because it's a new form of communication and new for interacting which is has a lot of convenience and and can engage a lot more people a lot more easily and being able to relay the appointments being able to text and call. Let them know. Hey we're doing this zoom in an hour. Don't miss it. All all of those ways of engaging customers is part of the process of making sure people show up at people are part of it and our system is now equipped to be able to announce those things another area where people doing a little bit and now they're doing a lot more is just the delivery of documents until the pandemic often documents were handed paper handed people but nowadays people are so used to receiving them like chonically. They have to be secure. They have to be available through other forms but again something that we've just totally transformed and provide all sorts of ways to allow people to receive whether it be report cards her schedules or financial reports. Or whatever it might be received them electronically automatically where neil old as they had. They were being mailed documents or being handed documents send reports electronically is very different than it was

What’s the Best Water Source?

"Call it. Like water quality ascension. So we start with you know. We've got the tap walker that that's coming through people's faucets at home. It's coming to showers and what's happened to this water is it's it's been so process you know we. We don't look at water as a living pretty much life sourced you know. She's like i think we take water for granted so we put it through these pipes and it goes through unnatural processes that it doesn't really need to go through. Maybe but we're doing it because we want to take out all the toxins and stuff like that so that's tap water and imagine if you are trying for the rest of your life you're gonna eat frozen dinners and fast food. But you're expecting it to nourish your body the same way that produce and natural foods that occur in the world would nourish us So that's like tap water and ever i. It's awesome. Because i think everyone is kind of starting to wake up to help bad. Their water is that they're drinking so then. We moved to bottled water and bottled water. Obviously you're in the single use plastic bottles So that's like knock great for the environment but it's also it's going through the same process. That tap water is going through. It's basically recycled tap water. In these companies they do usually process it. Goes through reverse osmosis They're taking it also from you. Know small rural towns and country and basically having. They're selling it back to these people. They're almost like stealing their water. And then selling it back to them at like a thousand percent markup which kinda sucks next year. Bpa sake toxins in there too. Oh my gosh and like think about how how long the water is actually sitting in those bottles before it reaches the shelves like sometimes it can be like eight to twelve months or something like that. I think and obviously the the plastics in the water. It can leak into the water. It's just a total mess but Then you moved to bottled water. You know it's not. It's not that much better than tap water and then you move to like a filter filter which okay now. We're we're kind of in the same area but we're using less plastic. So that's great. I love that And it's it's a good option for people at home. It's a good start. Then you move to things like reverse osmosis or a rookie Burke's kind of. I don't fully understand how they work But then reverse osmosis is taking everything out of the water right which is also a good start. But it's it's taking the good stuff out of the water so think about this. If you are drinking reverse osmosis. There's nothing in your water. there's no minerals. Nothing water needs minerals. So we're drinking. It's almost like rick drinking it. And the reverse osmosis starts pulling minerals of our body and then we p it out because we can't really absorb it

The Entomology of Boycotts

"I bring you interesting words and you may know all of them That have roots and a person's name, so if you remember quiz from last year i mentioned gerrymandering from Massachusetts governor l. Eldridge Gerry and the shape of voting districts kind of looked like a salamander Boston globe picked it up ran with became the gerrymander. And that's jerry me today. I really hope that some town in that in that area has a salamander mascot named Jerry. Oh that would be amazing right like of all the missed opportunities--ya so well are words today. Come also from people's names so our first one which i find really exciting well. I don't know if i told you this. I know i did on our previous show. But i don't know about the show but i went to ireland once on my honeymoon and scotland early. Yeah but this. This actually comes to us from irish irish. An irish word. The irish invented boycotting because of the english thousand percents. Yeah okay this all started in eighteen. Eighty when charles stewart parnell whom i've never heard of but was a pretty popular. Irish member of parliament named parliament after sir parlor apart so he decided that the english government had failed them in their time of need and they must seize control of their own destiny. This was not long after the potato famine. When you know. The brits really did nothing when they knew there was a problem and actively chose to ignore it while one third of the irish population starved to death. And then they that whole came in. Yeah we're assholes. So arnelle was the son of a protestant landowner who organized the rural masses into agitation against the ruling landlord class so the brits mostly the landlords owned everything. They were jacking up rent. They're throwing people out on the streets. Just terrible terrible people so kind of started. This movement called the three apps he wants fixity of tenure a freedom to sell and fair rent so these are all just people won't be affordable human rights. The same problem we're facing today.

"Listen you guys. Today's episode is so exciting. I didn't want every episode to be of people that i don't know or have relationship with so i'm excited on this week's episode. This is someone who has come into my life and when we get together it is so much fun and there are a few times when we've gotten together and i've said we should have recorded this. It's horrible that we are now in a world where we're saying. Oh my gosh. She should have captured this. This is tweet about this. Is i g worthy. Except why can't this just be a personal moment between us. Everything is now. Oh we should record this. I guess because to let people in on our lives and to give people a little bit of us and so i'm excited because my next guest glow attend mo is someone that is so inspiring to me. I follow her on instagram at glow graphics and she is beyond graphics hunting. She is in educator. She is a traveler. A blogger an influence or and i don't mean influence as it only gonna look at my new nail polish. No honey an influence each life in your mind right. Please welcome i. Thank you so much michelle and just you know you've influenced importance in the same way and i just have so much respected admiration for you. So thank you for having me on the show. It is honey. Come on this. Podcast is caught checking in. And i love to check in with people from all walks of life and i admire how you check in with yourself daily minute by minute. You are taking care of yourself. You're making moves that have you in mind cause lots of times. We can work in an industry where it's to have other people in mind mr put others first regardless of how you're doing like today i had to check myself because i've been waking up to messages. That don't even say good morning. Is it a little off. Everybody's off to the races. And i'm learning that you are type of person where there is a deadline. Yes i respect it lines. But you've gotten to a place where you're like come on share and look. I have to be so intentional because michelle. You and i both have really big hearts and we're very generous people and people know that and when you're a light worker in your light people are drawn to that and i decided unlike for my own self care. My phone goes on. Do not disturb from eight pm to eight am if the world is burning down i wouldn't until eight. Am girl like eight am. I check in with everybody else but until then wake up at five. So i need my three hours of lila nds. Meditation prayer. Journaling working out. Because if i'm not whole i cannot poor from a place of wholeness and a lot of times and i did this most of my life on wakeup check. My who needs me before. I can even porn to myself. I'm already pouring into someone else. The minute i wake up. And i'm not pouring from a place. A fullness importing from place of urgency or desperation. Oh my gosh. This sounds like an emergency. Your emergency does not constitute one on my end. Yeah and people love to project and also you'll lack of preparation is met my emergency okay and and again like you have to give you have to love yourself more than you love other people in that sound selfish but like it's an act of self care So you don't believe that self care is selfish is when you're at her that south carolina selfish. It's all about you you in. It's gonna take time to transition and and people will come back at you like you'll you took three hours to get back to me. I i was working out. I was praying. Yes i check my phone for the first time at ten. Am yes. I got back to you when i saw my phone. Lau and people can't even contextualized as a possibility that someone else could be pouring into themselves before for yemenia yet. And i think that's a great lesson for everybody. Listening to this week's episode is Maybe in order for you to do that you might have to wake up an hour earlier like you say you're up at five. Am maybe i thought i was doing something by being a no later than seven. Fifteen am but i'm to try to see what it's like to actually be a bit five eight. Am and with this time change. It's dark it's still dark at five. Am and here's the thing. Because i'm a creator. I have this like mad. Scientists evil genius in me. That i'm like before the sun go what we not feel. Almost this instinctual sense of like i'm doing something. Yes dark the sun. what's up. What you can with our sleeping grinding. Also go to bed at nine o'clock. So i also want people to listen to this and think by. Oh you ain't getting sleep. No i love. I love my come on. But i'm going like grandma. Go to nine o'clock so do you think you're most productive when you stay on that schedule. Yes yeah thousand percent because of something beautiful about knowing that even if my phone wasn't on do not disturb. Most people aren't up one needs me. They're not going to give you till eight. Am when they wake up. So the fact that. I can do what i gotta do before people wake us like i just it makes

"Often hold grudges against specific people. What they're very good at recognizing people's faces found to remember people for a long time. I believe that cruiser creepy hell. Okay but i need. I've i've gotten like side eye glances from them. And i've just been like hello. You have it like. I need to find out if hawks do. Because i yelled at one. We were outside in our backyard. Taking pictures as we do and taryn does happens to look up and sees a giant hawk. Yarn a giant giant store excise the giant hawk standing on a telephone pole in the corner of our yard. Like that's like in the middle of like a bunch of homes and we remember one. We have a bunch of little dogs in the house. We panic and we go and lock the door and then we remember like my neighbor has chicken chicken. That thousand percents chicken. Yeah so actually. We'll post this. We'll prove it. I video of taron just screaming at the hawk. And it's the funniest thing on trying to find out is my life and that's basically why struggle going to survive. Are we gonna serve anyway. Yeah it was a little scary though because like at one point the hawk look straight at me and like all. Its like rough. Left up I that was when i was like. They're like they're like fight stances they get themselves looking bigger. Yeah and then. Like flew over me. And i was like. I don't think he could kill me. But i lose an i. It was terrifying because it wasn't a fly. It was like a slow swoop kind of down towards us but then inevitably it went above was a threat. It was a threat dot. sir. I saw

No Grease, The Small Business Champion Of The People

"All right y'all back on the line. Deion and jimmy. Johnson from no greece are back on the line and of course last time we talked. It was a controversy going on at southpark mall that has been resolved and now they here to kind of tell us. What was the conclusion of that controversy. How ya doing brothers going man. I'm so proud of y'all man. I'm so extremely proud. Man that was a great look for us here in charlotte man to see them do the right thing and they wouldn't to underwrite thing. We wouldn't have stood up for our rights and what was right. God back this up one thousand percent you you started the whole thing man so we appreciate you. People really heard heard our voice. I threw you manso. We appreciate Being j murphy and everything that you you brought to the table for as so thank you so much well. We give all praise the gulf for having the courage to Talk about things like this and you know we doing this for our children. We are doing this like dame dash that we this for the culture. Let's talk about the conclusion note of what happened between you and south park mall. It came to resolve by way of simon property from corporate Getting involved so it wasn't a more management from south park. It was corporate Simon property and actually wanted to see os clue in and they met with me and my brother that friday. And let's be clear it was the people and it was the the media and all of those different outlets that no them charlotte it. Wasn't you know no greece wasn't germane game. You know it was the people and particularly that people are charlotte and so The ceo he flew in. We met them on their friday. They informed us. On some of the you know how was kinda mishandled on You move management side and you know there was a deal being worked That the lower management didn't know corporate was doing with a bigger company which included twenty stores in that store that we were in which included in the math. They knew that the best thing to do was finish out. Lease and then Finish that deal with that company A more broader thing was that they recognize that we had already been five other locations in simon properties. They wanted to help us expand and they're going to give us a permanent lease there in South park so choose to do it. At the end of the lease Actually already offered us two locations already in there. We just haven't made a decision on which one of the locations we would you know Prefer okay and guessing the nutshell gang. Yeah i just want to back up. You know just a little bit. Was that that pressure that the city the people of charlotte put on on simon property in in south park. You know may that resolve happen real real soon. You know in twenty four hours. Basically they had already reversed. You know the whole combination of our lease and so that was already know down at twenty four hour that they was not terminating us and then everything else was about. How do we do better as a corporate entity working with small businesses. How do we do better. So that's how discussion got to wanted to see ios clients charlotte and having that discussion with us so a lot of people when they were looking at this story. You know two black barbers in south park and people were were saying. Hey nah is this. Racism i an are. They doing this deliberately. Because they don't want black people to become successful business entrepreneurs in south southpark mall in and then others would want to come in and say. Hey look we don't need that many black people in the south park ball. That wasn't the case at all. Was it or was that was not issue with south park. Simon property it was not the race the race card but the issue of the community and in particular small businesses and black businesses and particularly. Those issues are the broader issues that they attached with no greece's issue. That's why we want to kind of continue this conversation so that we could deal with some of the broader issues. That's happening not only in charlotte across america was small businesses and specifically. You know when we start talking about small businesses. we're talking about black businesses. Also so. I think that's the that's why we think it's important to continue this conversation. And start to plan strategies and actions moving forward because this really energized the small business community when i saw this happening and everybody put themselves in your place. I know that you want to really be a catalyst for helping. Small businesses thrive and and the begin to be established especially with young people. What do you think is our next step for building. Economic mobility was small businesses. Not a we have. The city's attention. And when i say we i'm tom. The small business community is now. It's time for us to put the pressure you know on our politicians and our leaders here in charlotte and say okay. What are we doing as a small business community. What opportunities really are afforded to us here in charlotte. Let's start holding our leadership accountable. And when i say our politicians talking about our our private equity investors here the banks. Those are the people that we need to start saying. Okay now what are the opportunities here because we have this challenge here with you. Know being data city and meaning no when economic mobility. Here you know. We have a a group of people that fallen last here. I mean if you're born poor in charlotte you remain poor for the rest of your life right and small businesses the big answer to that. We need to create more small businesses so that we could deal with this poverty issue here in charlotte. You know we're talking about you know tax dollars and we're talking about politicians who obviously they get paid by tax dollars. They need to be held accountable. These answer

How Monster Beverage Shares Soared a Monster 100,000% in the Last 20 Years

"This has become one of your favorite companies. Not just because the story around bro. Culture is quite interesting right now. Lots of people are playing more video games. Were all stuck at home in. So maybe wanna drink more of this particular beverage while you're gaming but also because the returns on this one have just been absolutely stunning yet. Exactly right so. The company is a monster beverage. You've almost certainly seen them like at any deli or grocery store anything. They're known for their big cans of heavily. Caffeinated drinks sugary like super aggressive label labels on them. and it's like this sort of like very like macho. Frankly bro beverage and the stock has done phenomenally well but depending on exactly what Settings you use. it's it might be the single best performing stock in history or certainly over the last twenty or so years. I figured southlake eighty-five thousand percent over the last twenty years or one point it was like it's just unreal. We're talking like bitcoin level returns actually could probably put like bitcoin indie Etf to but we're talking like a bitcoin level returns for a company that sells a sh- sugary caffeinated beverages. Right and i think when most people think about the best performing stock of the past couple of decades they're going to think about amazon or google or apple or something like that. Not many people are gonna think about you. Know a consumer facing beverage company after. Tell you something. So i don't know much about monster I've never had one of the energy drinks. Although i am very aware of the branding and advertising strategy has been a big part of their success. And i'm sure we're going to get into that on the podcast. But i have to say in the course of doing some research for this episode. I found the most amazing anecdote on read it. Of course it came from read. It changes that perfect. What what what the anecdote. So i think it was on the financial independence retirement early board but it was some guy who said he invested ninety thousand dollars in monster energy drinks I think this was in two thousand ten. He posted and he said he'd invested five years ago so basically he had a five hundred percent increase on that ninety thousand dollar position which made him a millionaire in the space of five years and the best part of it was he wrote that in two thousand ten everyone on the message board basically said you are absolutely crazy. I can't believe you have this huge chunk. Appoint foley of your portfolio in a single stock. You need to sell it right now. And of course had he held onto it at. I don't even know what it would be worse now but like the big spike in monster energy came after two thousand ten so you can only imagine what ninety k. Invested back in two thousand five with look like after a fifteen year. A monster run in monster energy. It's really incredible. I mean it's like one of these charts where you just like slice it up. And you're like holy crap. These amazing returns and then you zoom out and looks even more amazing. It's just. It's just

The State Of GameStopped Stock

"The state of play on game. Stop the biggest of the big. Red it hype. Stocks slid more than thirty percent in. Monday's trade is a further fall to come game. Stop has had a wild ride recently. After exuberant retail traders sparked a short squeeze in the stock. That meant that the professional traders who had against the mall retailer were forced to buy it to limit their losses pushing the price even higher. At this point you've been watching this guy's got a one thirty eight dead so down thirty percent yesterday to to to to twenty five and now down from two twenty five forgot it at one forty i gotta i gotta one thirty eight bed right now. So thirty percent yesterday. Thirty seven percent today. I don't know what to say about that other than we said all along when when the shorts get covered. What's it worth. What's it worth when the shorts get covered. It did anyone. Ask that question Well we did. Obviously but yeah. I don't know what the the company is. I don't know what the company is actually worth. And i love the i love when people say you know maybe the guys got some some great plans who knows. Maybe maybe they do. Maybe there's some online business model that works for brick and mortar right. I mean that's that that that i guess you could. You could somehow justify you know a two thousand percent run up. But i know what do you think is this. Just go back up to five hundred at this point or is the fever. Broken at this point look i. I wouldn't proclaim to know what's going to happen with different investors who try to get in and run with this. We knew from the beginning that you may double a stock and that looks outrageous enough but when you're trading at twenty times what you were a couple of weeks ago there's something besides fundamentals that are at play there so it'd be almost impossible to say because it hasn't been a fundamental Move that's been driving this for quite a while. Hollywood's weird isn't it. There's a couple of movie versions in the works already. they have. I hear it when they make a movie. They made three different endings. They have no idea. Well what the ending of this is going to be on on the ben. Mezrak is doing one of the social network before this one's the antisocial network eilly anti-secession well i'd like to. I'd like to have some idea what the ending is going to be before i sign on. Maybe it doesn't matter

Robinhood CEO speaks out after GameStop stock chaos

"Robin hoods roller coaster ride and a new interview from the company's ceo. Trying to slow things down. The popular free brokerage app has experienced unprecedented high volume of trading as well read it reading retail traders pile into a few highly. Shorted stocks in a move organized. In part on the irreverent wall street bet sub reddit. The volume was so overwhelming and companies. You've been hearing about maybe again after a few years game stop. Amc blackberry and nokia but robin hood suspended trading in those stocks on thursday. Wow the reaction to this move was swift and surprising both congresswoman out of cossio. Cortez and senator. Ted cruz found themselves on the same side of an issue. Both tweeting that robin hoods moves were unacceptable and at the expense of the little guy investor over the hedge funds feeling the squeeze when stocks they shorted suddenly shot up a thousand percent in the legend. Robin hood stole from the rich to give to the poor so this was a confusing metaphor yesterday for everybody. Robin hood said it was a risk management decision to protect investors the markets and the firm. The company has to deposit money to a clearinghouse based on the volume of trades. And they feared they'd be unable to meet the anticipating deposit requirements now. The company's ceo joined our andrew. Ross sorkin of squawk box just earlier this week on the power of retail investors. It is a huge time for retail investors. Check your feed for that conversation and then take a listen to this one done just two days later. When the company was dealing with the anger of the robin hoodies they're typically younger users and trying to raise money through credit lines to ensure it had enough capital to resume trading on these volatile stocks. Here's andrew flat. Ten of is with us right now and we appreciate you joining us on a day where there are so many questions there are frankly as you know a lot of angry customers out there and a lot of questions about what took place in the decisions that you made to limit so many your customers ability to buy stocks like game. Stop questions about whether you have a liquidity problem. Whether you're trying to protect them from themselves whether citadel did this explain what happened today. Thank you for having me on the show again andrew. So what happened. Today was as you pointed out. We had to make a very difficult decision. It's been a it's been a challenging day. We made the decision in the morning to limit the buying of about thirteen securities on our platform so to be clear customers could still sell those securities if they had positions in them and they could also trade in the thousands of other security is on our platform so it was a difficult decision. And that's what we had to do as part of normal operations but explain. Why did you do this. What did the call you and tell you you had to do this. Was there a problem inside. The company in terms of liquidity in terms of the demand deposits. The you had to put it in front to the exchanges. What led to this sure and let me let me explain exactly how this works. First of all i want to address some of the misinformation. That's been out there. There's a lot of a. We absolutely did not do this. At the direction of a market maker or hedge fund or anyone we row to or other market participants. The reason we did it was because Robin a brokerage firm. We have lots of financial requirements including sec net capital requirements and clearinghouse deposits. So that's money that we have to deposit burying clearing-houses so some of these requirements fluctuate bid based on volatility in the markets and they can be substantial in the current environment where there's a lot of volatility and a lot of concentrated activity in In these names that have been going viral on social media so we're really in unprecedented times and in order to protect the firm in protect our customers. We had to limit by in these in these stocks in to be absolutely. It's ahead but it sounds to me though that you're suggesting that there was a liquidity problem inside the firm and my question about that then raises all sorts of new questions about whether there's a systemic issue underneath the system and underneath the company unto itself. No there was no liquidity problem and to be clear this was done preemptively so we did this. Proactively in thousands of whether securities remain tradable on the platform customers that held these positions. Were able to seldom in. We're doing what we can to allow a buying 'em to remove these restrictions in the morning but also You might have seen robin hood has been the number one app in the in the store overall so we have seen unprecedented interest due to the fact that finance has been culturally irrelevant in a way that hasn't been before and these stocks are going viral on social media. And i think it's really interesting to juxtapose against some of the other questions that we've been having a before this of course robin For everyday investors from the very beginning with stood for investors opening up access and giving them the ability to trade commission. Free in whatever they want a in. We've gotten a lot of criticism that you know. Maybe there should be more restrictions so it pains us to have had to these restrictions and we're gonna do what we can to enable trading test. How concerned should customers be though about the robustness of the system. If in fact what ultimately had to happen was you had to shut down. Access to buying these securities because of the deposit required. Well to be clear. This was the system working. We have the ability to restrict buying in symbols for a unprecedented market conditions. Such as this in to be clear we didn't shut down the system. We shut down by four of these thirteen stocks for the thirteen securities but customers that position could still sell and customers still could buy and sell the thousands of other securities on the robin hood platform. But when you look at the precipitous fall for example of game stop. Do you think that robinhood bears any responsibility for that. I can't comment on price. Action of of securities and probably would be inappropriate for me to do that in also. I should know rodman wasn't the only firm to restrain buying other. Brokerages have been restricting the buying and trading of these types of securities all week. And even today. Of course we get the lion's share of the attention since we've been the cognitive referring for retail investing in america but other other people are dealing with these challenges as well

The DMM Foundation: Putting Your Crypto to Work for You

"You just kind of remind us A little bit about the dm foundation. Sure so dm that sounds for defy money market And it's run by a foundation and basically it's pretty simple. What is trying to do is really just trying to solve the dual problems problems of one currency debasement and then the second is the possibility of earning interest and so we have a defy protocol basically that empowers anybody connected to the internet who has crypto to earn six point two five percent Stable correlated yield on their assets We do that through Basically a protocol you can interact with The compound that you convert your either. Us dc die either or use dt into. What's called 'em tokens. And then this earned six point two five percent. You can come in and out at anytime. You want one of the big differences. Where we're focused is is really. We know that in the crypt space time yield can be like a thousand percent and then it could be like point two percent right and so define money. Market is really focused on a stable interest rate. And the way we do that as we actually connect and interest is generated from real world assets that are all viewable on chain and this provides. It's very stable. Six point two five percent return and we use chainlink. Oracle's where all this information now is transparent into what's backing up the eco-system and the portfolios sentence producing this interest So it's governed by dow the dow. So oh it's full decentralized governance and we think that it's a new way that i think a lot of folks are interested in because again it kind of helps you solve the ability for debasement because all the all the assets actually buy real so we have an inflationary environment real senator. Pretty good the second thing is you can get the view into the underlying assets and you get the stable six point two five percent so it's been pretty well received by the market in that i think we fit in niche in the overall space grip space.

Hottest Stock On Wall Street: Struggling Video Game Store GameStop

"Hottest stock on wall street is a struggling video game store. You walk past in shopping malls game. Stop its share. Price has spiked over a thousand percent in recent days all because of amateur day traders who gather in a red forum. Mary childs is the co host of. Npr's planet money podcast and well talked with her. Hey mary hi. So i found myself up at ten o'clock at night texting with my kid brother about game stop stock and i realized i really need to know what is going on here. What's going on here so it starts in a place on the internet known as wall street. That's it's this forum on read it. We're all these day trader types. These non professionals get together and trade stock tips as well as memes and screengrabs of their trades and a ton of rocketship emojis. This places become really active since the start of the pandemic with people kind of trapped at home looking for something to do and back one of these reta traders started arguing for why everyone should buy game stop. This was a weird argument. This is an old mall brand with exposure to commercial real estate. It's not exactly natural by right now but that actually became part of the argument for why you should buy it because the argument against game stop made it a good stock to bet on because there was so much interest betting against it. All these big establish hedge funds were betting against it so that turned into this rallying. Cry that you know. We should take on big wall street and from there took off so the hedge funds are short selling it which is something that hedge funds do and then it takes a twist right yes. Basically these big hedge funds were betting that the shares would go down right. They were shorting it so to do that. They have to borrow the shares of the stock and sell it and if the price goes down then they can buy it back at. The lower price borrowed stock and pocket. That price difference but as price goes up. If they're wrong they have to go buy back that stock at new higher price and that leaves them vulnerable to if the price shoots up really fast then all of a sudden that's called a short squeeze and that's exactly what happened here. It kind of amplifies the effective and more so it makes sense. Inherently that big hedge funds might be able to move markets right. They have like billions of dollars but this is a case where small investors moved to the market. How did they manage to do that. Basically wall street bets has learned how to weaponize the tools that they're using so they're using options and functionally. You can buy options for way less money than you need to buy the actual stock so that means that you can take your pennies on the dollar and go play in the market. And the way that they're playing they found ways to lean on the banks that seldom the stocks to lean on these hedge funds in such a way that exploit the mechanics of options and that can amplify everything that doing and get the most bang for their buck. Mary what does this tell us about. How wall street works and who actually has power versus who. Maybe we assumed has power absolutely. This has all these kind of same stresses occupy wall street where people are saying these big hedge funds. Why should they get to control the stock market the systems rigged and this has been a weird way for people to forcibly. Take that back to up. End those structures and up that power dynamic so it's not clear to me where this ends up and certainly there are going to lose a lot more money than they necessarily have but at this moment it feels like popular opinion is a little bit more with wall street bets. Mary tiles is a co host of. Npr's planet. money podcast. Mary thanks so much thank you.

All The Things: A 2020 Debrief with Sean Miura

"Living cooney In in many ways that is the most that we can ask ourselves right. Now i was gonna say what qualifies as living now is simply a pulse because sure i got that notes a into bleak time but i think I'm leaving this year with capacity to be grateful for stuff. That's that's kind of something that i'm i'm happy about and i feel very privileged good. I'm very happy to hear that. That's an esa. Just sean way to start this off. isn't it also need. I'm still like writing this high of realizing that. This is the first time that you're on my first of all podcasts. 'cause i was like i've podcast with sean before. This is not the first but if the verse but this one. So i've done. I've been on collab- cast multiple times. I think the last time was when we recorded with david joy okay and then the recording. They didn't like that so that but it was fine. I think laden wanna had just come out and that was all we were talking about or something so it was kind of saying that in intro as well it was a whole thing it was a it was beautiful thing. That is so solicit. Start with that. That my memory is non-existent This i mean the whole purpose of this conversation. Is i just wanna talk with you. But it's really we're at the very very end of twenty twenty which will go down in infamies. Two days left two days left as probably gonna go up the last day. So we're just like you know settling and coming to terms with all that was this year. So yeah we're just if anyway i mean i said this in the intro. We good but just or eight. We're debriefing. I calling this. Like a twenty twenty debrief a good a good debrief. Yeah thank thank you for having me. This is actually the. I've i've said no to pretty much every like podcast or video or or writing. Ask that. I've had This year really. Yeah just because i had. I didn't it was it was like either at. It didn't feel like i was the right person to talk about the subject. Or i just wasn't really feeling like i. I wanted to be putting anything. That i was saying at the time on tape because my brain was all over the place but I'm i'm happy to be here just to to look back because i think that that's that's an important thing for everyone to be doing right now. I'm slow. I am just so beyond honor. Now this is so meaningful that it's the first time you're on first of all and also that it's a rarity because i one hundred thousand percent support that i think i did ask you earlier this year and you did say no. I really admired and respected you for that. I think that an imprint. On my heart of like i need to be more on i. Yeah i mean. It's i think you're asking me to talk about the The uprisings after the murder. Of george. Floyd and taylor and And the The central park on incident. And i think that for for for many from for many of us who were applying. That was an interesting moment because that sort of like amplifying and supporting movement work has been is just kind of part of what we do and then in that moment. Suddenly i found myself being pegged as like a like a weird spokesperson. For that. i wasn't. I wasn't a leader. Hin or was an expert in nor nor should i really be the person to go to and i think that i i think for many of us. Were just trying to figure out who who who could have. The conversation. And i got asked quite a few times actually In the weeks following that to not surprised podcasts. Or or Write a thing or do a photo shoot or et cetera et cetera. Simply off the fact that i was reposting things on on instagram stories and I think what. I what what i've taken away from. That is just this reminder that you know we we need to be more clear on who within our community is doing this work and who were in the scene to and who were uplifting and And so and so in that moment would it's some. This is something that i've always tried to practice I thought it was really important. Just to pass the mic. Which i did a few times and referred people to other folks but Yeah i mean i. I'm i'm glad that was. That was a good thing. I'm always a little a little bit unsure. When i say no to stuff but yeah trying to try and do more of that.

Tencent Buys Warframe

"The first here is from the motley fool and the headline tencent makes another billion dollar gaming acquisition. The chinese technology and media conglomerate has been on an acquisition spree in the gaming space making its leadership position even stronger What they bought here was Lay you lay you technologies. Which is the parent company of digital extremes And it's a canadian. Based video game studio known for war frame they also own studios including athlon and splash damage. Ten sense going to be paying roughly one and a half billion in cash Choir the company which is incredible The buying spree that they've been on the amount of cash that they've put out there the second acquisition this one I think we talked about it on a previous podcast And it was a agrees to a us. One point two billion dollar deal for f one video game developer code masters. I think when we talked about it we were talking about it in the context of take two interactive having made an offer and ea sort of just trump them. The came came up with an offer for about two hundred or two hundred and fifty million dollars more so they were willing to pay a higher Share price 'cause code masters is publicly traded. And so it looks like ea is going to end up acquiring code masters having outbid take two interactive. Which i think at the time when we talked about it we felt that was a big price. Tag billion dollars for code masters and now the looks like the trading price is going to be one point. Two billion so curious to get your guys thought You know we can talk about them individually or we can talk about sort of which one we think is the better acquisition Neil i don't know if you know the war frame guys. I know it is canadian based a candidate based But curious to get your thoughts on these two. My i take is. I know you guys are fans of this gentleman. But jeff bezos when you look at code masters being bought yeah code about being bought for one point two billion. Let's just taking kids that are issued. How amazing that twitch nine hundred seventy six years ago right on decide to eight point. Nine children should win. Ea i think is in such a good spot and we might say openly. Here that one would you billionaires demo overpaying if you look at the stock run that they've been onto it's a currency unto itself and there probably sixty seventy percent on the year and adding more aaa titles to their. Snow is all the better. I think they've just done a tremendous job in and similar racing at f. One especially with what we saw as a result of that netflix series drug survive and get him is f. One is making a huge comeback younger audiences and people that have now seen this through netflix. And then people that are you know. Middle aged or know mid thirties to my age is. We're all obsessed and we're following it every week and it's quite dramatic as i didn't care about f. one at all in the last couple of years. But i'll admit. I've i've in the playstation store i've bought the f. one game it's not that great in my opinion maybe not that good at driving it but i think the acquisition is worth the risk. You want to be known as as a world class when it comes to fee for Nhl sim racing. They've got such great titles along the way and you know the team over there in teams doing it competitive gaming entertainment now. They're just making the right most. I don't know much about this. Said deal admittedly But anything tencent touches It's a powerful move and they're building empire that we should be very very afraid of. I mean both seem like really good acquisitions from synergies perspective right because ea has all the sports titles so f one feels like a perfect fit and and ten cents graded monetization right. Probably better than anyone and wore. Frame really is one of these free to play like monetize. Every which way up the wazoo kind of games like it's in the ten cent portfolio both of these acquisitions. I have to tell you like in a vacuum. I thought they were already owned by the people. Buying them like no joke. Like i literally thought were frame was somehow i was like. That's just the sort of thing they buy and the same for ea. Like i literally thought. Like i played grid quite a lot in my memory. Brid was an ea game like it was published by ears. I don't know. But like i just that tells you how lake like well on portfolio on message these acquisitions. Our prices are high. But as neil said like the market tie and then took to other point as well you know putting in context of bazo acquisition. Like doesn't matter where you put money and put it games like i think anything that was bought for a billion dollars a couple years ago smart because there were a couple wasn't just twitch we had minecraft myra look in a world where roadblocks goes public at thirty billion or forty billion market cap like buying minecraft at four or five or whatever they paid right seems like house. Yeah just like microsoft like so like the bottom line is but guises whiting. Listen to this podcast. It's so important. It's just like this is not the exception. This is the norm putting money in games today will turn into more money later. More likely than not investment advice aside. I'm not a credit above because the industry is just so positioned. It's the future of so much entertainment media and everything so like the reason. We're observing these crazy exits and outcomes is because the space is a whole is growing so much right so lake. Get into the space. That's the bottom line william. I'm with you on that. A hundred thousand percent. And i think the interesting thing is re that are in the industry. we talk with these things very openly. We discuss them. But from an outside portfolio manager at a morgan stanley wherever they probably are afraid

Men’s Nail Polish Is Taking Off—Why Now?

"Is men's nail polish taking off the wall street journal just posted an article This past week and they've predicted that men's nail polishes taking off. And why now really. I've tried nail polish once. But i never. I've never thought to myself saying. Oh i you know. I i really need to put a nail polish. Yeah well they say. The trend is trickling down from celebrities. That are wearing nail polish. Of course men wearing nail polish is not new In the seventies many rockstars Wearing yale polish. As well. And i just you know i'm a little well. I'm not skeptical. I'm sure more and more men are wearing l. polish. I'm sure but i actually used to work for a men's makeup brand and we launched nail polish for men. Beautiful colors and people did wear them. People did buy them but sure to very very very small niche market. And i think no matter what's happening to sales. I think it's a little strong to say. Men's nail polish is taking off. Well i did a little. I did do a bit of a snarky comment on twitter about this. Said you know if they they. They sell a hundred bottles this year. They're going to improve it by thousand percent or something i'm sure they sell more than that And it has plenty of men who are going to like nail polish. I just don't personally think like it's it's really going to like. It's there's never going to be a time when men wear nail polishes much as women. No and i think. That's where i i feel like the articles. A little misleading. This isn't actually the first time. I've seen immense nail polish article are quite a bit a few of them and yes i think. Younger people are more open to wearing the l. polish for sure but when you look at the whole scope of the nail industry and how much revenue is generated from it male. Specific nail polishes still going to be a very small very small fraction of that. Yeah well it's very interesting. I you know. I just always see these articles about the men's cosmetics taking off and i've been seeing those the same articles since ninety five and you just never never seems to live up to the heights in the articles. Maybe i live long enough where that changes but boy i still don't i still don't see it. I suppose i just imagined. Most men have the same sort of Lasi faire attitude about cosmetics. As i have. And that's probably completely mistaken. Yeah it'll be interesting to see what market share actually gets taken from this trend will say i mean. I can't even myself to put on shaving cream. To shave. Just saw your. You won't be the polish consumer. I thank god. I mean mr cosmetic chemists certainly won't be but you know i don't even see my nephews wear so we'll see. Maybe maybe we're wrong. We've been wrong before. Not offense sometimes certainly about trends. Would you read this week. I stumbled on this article. Which is a review it was. It was published a survey published about ten years ago but it does not a subject that i'm interested in It's an old survey of toxicologists. Okay so just about ten years ago this survey of toxicologist who were members of the society of toxicology. I was just very surprised to learn that in this study of it was over. Like nine hundred toxicologists. Ten percent of the toxicologist said that they believe. Organic or natural products are inherently safer. I've never met a toxicologist that has not that. That's incredible i mean. Ten percent is pretty low. I mean so nine. Out of ten toxicologist say no. That's not true but there's really. There's that one toxic one out of ten toxicologists high. I i know exactly but you know it was even more was even more amazing to me. There was also a whopping twenty six percent who said they believed. Cosmetics pose a significant health risk.

"With very little pushback with very little insanity like oh god so i guess when the harriet tubman thing that was not last year but the year before last god why that trump tom feels like it travel so fast but then so slow at the same time it's like he's been in office own my life but also for only eighteen months how our both of those it doesn't make any sense that we have to deal with both of those at the same time but shutouts kim kardashian for using her again i always said well always over the past month i've said it would take heaven and earth to compliment that bitch i'm saying good job on using your whiteness forgetting this one black woman out of jail but the call that going to the white house and talking about prison for making matt something that applies to the vast majority of people who are unjustly incarcerated as a totally different thing and also fuck you in your hoping never not gonna feel that way about that so fuck the trump administration for feeling the way they do about harriet tubman thing i knew that i wasn't going let a former slave on the money like i wanted it to happen quickly enough for everything to be done and them to be printing the new bills before obama got out of office but when it became clear that wasn't going to be the case i was like oh weird truly fucked so we might not see it until we get another democratic president in office which might not even be twenty twenty me does apparently we have democratic senators who are ready to roll over and accept on trump for renomination as long as they think they can get whatever the buck bullshit amenities which aren't even mendis just basic human rights basic things human beings need in order to survive to leave so but anyway not to go all the way down that road but the trump administration for that in addition to all the many many other reasons there are two cuss everybody.

"You could have just sent out a press release just gave us linked to the trailers and then saved a whole bunch of money on this whole performance and shit 'cause they being their playstation especially being they're having fucking hamilton on stage and we'll break into trailer for video and then it's like cats and then it's another it's like musical i still have not seen me neither here really great things about going to watch a musical about fucking cats i've heard it's really like surprise it's older than i am to sug for you but i'm just won't maybe one of these you know what i'm going to buy tickets and surprise you and be like we're going okay the only way we're actually gonna probably the only way on going okay so for me bars of all totally agree that nurse should just let the neri's enjoy whatever they get their merged ship from especially when we are in a situation where like so few people have access to joy lead nigga have the joy girl was like a so important you're gonna leak anything leak things that could crumble the current white house right we do that let's look good stuff that would be great so less april president obama was an office if you can believe that or not right the treasury secretary announced that exam ags and hamilton would remain on the ten dollar bill but that harriet tubman would be on the twenty dollar bill opposite we're not gonna yeah well right it literally so opposite of andrew jackson interject andrew jackson who was a slave ver harry was announced to be on the bill and everybody was like very very excited and all this but i thought this time this is gonna take a few years to implement at the minimum and by that time donald trump will being office or sounds like that won't ever happen and today guess what came out just guess monday go we're not going to the trump administration declare that they don't have any updates regarding the progress of getting harriet tubman on the twenty dollar bill and they cannot confirm or deny whether she will be inclu.
