"This is episode three ten of The Voice by podcast. My guest today is ragu, found him a lion, senior vice president of the magenta voice program for Deutsche Telekom. This was recorded live at mobile world Congress. Hello, voiced by nation. I'm Bret you're host of The Voice bob podcast for nearly 7 years. I brought you weekly conversations with the industry leaders and the researchers that are shaping the future of conversational AI and synthetic media. Today I have a returning guest. Three years ago, ragout on a lion joined me to talk about them again to voice assistant and the smart speaker, which had only been in the market a few months at that point. Now, more recently, ray goo submitted an article to voice bat AI, chronicling them again to journey, what the company has learned, and where it's headed with the voice assistant today. I caught up with him at mobile world Congress in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago. To get the story behind the story. So ragu talks about voice assistants in media, the decision to discontinue the smart speaker, expansion into other use cases, and a lot more. He's had a front row seat to the development of the industry and where the technology capabilities and the consumer adoption intersected, and one of the few companies out there that actually was competitive with the tech giants, voice assistant offerings, won a lot of rewards. It was really regarded as one of the most capable solutions out there. So I know you're going to like this interview, but before we get to it, I did want to let you know that in a couple of weeks, voice bought is hosting a special event about the collision of large language models generative AI features and traditional NLU based voice AI solutions. This has been an area of a lot of activity, but it's not clear to me that people have seen it all in one place before. We have great companies set up to come and present what they're doing in the space. Some examples human first and got it AI, and voice flow. They're going to demonstrate their gender to AI features and talk about how that is changing the value proposition, the processes and the expectations of their customers, which could range anywhere across the enterprise. It is a free online event and will be the most efficient way for you to see a number of demonstrations that show how large language models are impacting voice AI solutions right now, just go to voice bot that AI and click on the about tab and events in the navigation bar to register for the free event and learn more, I will also put a link in the show notes. I definitely hope to see you there. I think you're really going to like it. Now ragu, that on the line, he's the senior vice president of the voice program at Deutsche Telekom. Earlier in his career, he was a vice president of software engineering at SAP, his deep technical background, ragu was my featured guest on The Voice bot podcast in episode one 48. Today's interview represents a three year update on Deutsche telecom's voice assistant journey. I know you're gonna like it. Next up, what consumers really want from voice assistants? What doesn't work? What does and what's next? Let's get started. Hey.

"Winning her congressional district in New York City according to AP, and Dan Goldman, winning New York's tenth congressional district. In New York's 11th, former representative max rose has failed in his attempt to defeat representative Nicole malliotakis the Republican who unseated rose back in 2020. Let's cross to our studios in San Francisco at Baxter with more on some of the races in the Washington D.C. area at yeah, Maryland. Doug a very interesting race now has been going back and forth just in the last half hour. It's changed a hands Neil parrot who is a Republican now is leading David trone with 53% of the vote, parrot. 36% counted. So we'll keep a close eye on that one. Maryland, marijuana legalization, amendment has passed. In Virginia, there are three races that are bellwethers that could be looked at for, you know, for the nation, wexton has a slightly new district with 83% of the vote counted, her district was seen as the easiest seat for Democrats to hold. Now, Stan Berger is behind by about 6000 votes with 83,000 luria behind Higgins by about 19,000 votes and if two of those go, it's gonna be a good night for the Republicans. All right, all right, Ed, let's get back to special coverage of the midterm elections. This is Bloomberg's special coverage of midterms 2022. I'm David Weston. Another key race in these midterm elections is Nevada. We haven't heard from Nevada yet, so we now turn to Bloomberg's Francesca maggioni. She's joining us from Las Vegas. So Francesca is actually we don't know what you're the results yet. Is that right? Yeah, we don't know the results yet, the Senate race is a very tight race, but we probably won't know tonight or even tomorrow and the polls just closed and we won't know any results until the last person has voted. Okay, so what do we know at the process? Do we have any sense of how many people are voting, how many people voted in advance in an early voting absentee? What do we know about the process? So one of the data points that we have about the process is in washoe county Nevada, Republican in person voter turnout was around 52% versus democratic voter turnout that was around 22% as of 3 p.m.. This is not that unexpected since democratic voters are usually more keen to vote through mail. But this is one of the indicators we have as of now and hopefully as the night progresses we're going to have some more data on that. So of course we have a Democrat who is the incumbent there, but it was thought that she had a very tough race in front of her. Do we have a sense Francesca with the issues are that might be driving Nevada voters? Yeah, so many of the voters that I spoke to are really concerned with the cost of living rent in Nevada has jumped up dramatically, it's also really interesting because senator court does not know is the only Latino senator. As of now and the Latino voters are annoyed about or upset about high cost, but at the same time they're both the Republican and the Democrat are trying to appeal to this vote that is really important in Nevada Latino voters account for like 30% of Nevada voters. Of course, Nevada is heavily dependent on the travel and leisure, particularly because of the casinos, the travel that goes out to Las Vegas. Is there any leftover residual resentment of shutdowns? Because the pandemic, or are we past that? Well, I was actually with the culinary workers union this morning. It's a union that has mobilized about more than 60,000 canvases and they are actually endorsing the Democratic Party. So it seems that this workforce is really keen on supporting the current democratic incumbent. Okay, Francesca, thank you so much for reporting from Las Vegas as Bloomberg's Francesca baglione. We welcome now our Wall Street week voices votes reporter. She's now a boss. So Charlotte you've been doing a terrific job keeping us honest here about what role of Wall Street plays in this election. What do we know? I want to point out something about that debt ceiling debate because that is a key issue when you come to Wall Street and asset prices. Let's listen first to two sides of this debate, first coming from congressman Kevin Brady, who spoke to you a little earlier today. Our debts will be paid, they'll be paid on time. I'm a little surprised this issue feels like a little more of that economic fear mongering. We're hearing from The White House about if Republicans take the majority, the economy will crash or social security will end. All those things have been debunked. Now, David, I also want to bring you inside a conversation I had earlier today with Charles Myers, who is the chair of global, which advises and works with more than a hundred clients that is asset managers that says he's really worried that we're really getting close to the fiscal edge or very close to technical defaults, and the only way to avoid that is if Mitch McConnell does the right thing in December, he says, and he thinks it's going to be very difficult for him to do that. That would be having 9 Republican lawmakers really side with the Democrats here to raise the debt ceiling. And that's because as we know, that debt burden has burdened past $31 trillion for the first time ever and is very close to hitting that ceiling what Charles Myers believes is at the beginning of next year. Now, I want to put this in a perspective to you 2011 was raised a couple of times here. What exactly happened in 2011 aside from just that the U.S. was downgraded, which of course was the first time in history you did see, take a look at that, a massive drawdown inequities from peak to trough that was more than 17% almost 18%. That's in P that year ended about flat on the year. And even through September, you saw that overhang really laughed. So months of concern, even after the initial dispute was brought up. There was something else that was different about that time and now David. At that time, it was only equities that really saw the pressure from the debt ceiling debate at this degree. And remember, a lot of folks now, BTIG as well, drawing that concern that this will be similar to 2011. This time around treasuries and the dollar may also be under pressure if this really gets to the degree that people are really worried about. As we've said, this is a two sided issue. They may not want it to get to that point, but to the point that you've been making all night with your guests, this could be a point of leverage as Republicans, certain Republicans may want to start raining in fiscal spending and other issues in the budget at a time when we have the U.S. debt to GDP ratio ballooning past a 120%. And that is very different of an environment that we're dealing with today than in all of the prior times that we've dealt with this. Thank you so much as Bloomberg and I basic. She is our Wall Street votes reporter. Back with us now, our political contributors, Rick Davis of stone court capital and Jeannie Chan Zeno of iona university. So Rick, apart from the debt ceiling issue. What are the other issues that business should be concerned about with the Republicans in charge? Or maybe they should be happy? Some will be happy on issues related to government spending and taxes. There's no question that Republicans may have a much more conservative point of view than what Democrats were calling for with billionaire taxes and taxes on minimum corporate profits and things like that. So that will be a sea change. I would also say an area that Republicans will go after. But for different reasons, is big tech. Both Democrats and Republicans have their issues with big tech. Republicans issues are slightly different. They include things like not using enough conservative voices in their algorithms and things like that. Democrats have a lot of issues related to privacy and other issues on that scale. Will Republicans work with Democrats to sort of unite against big tech is going to be a big question coming forward or do they just move out on their own agenda that has their own specific questions? Gee, this is a little bit like the debt ceiling where I hear about it all the time, but nothing ever gets done. How many hearings have we had about big tech? Where Democrats and Republicans beat up as Rick says for somewhat different reasons but beat up the big day. But nothing happens. Do we really expect anything really

"Quoting TechCrunch. Meta might soon want everyone to hop into its playful virtual realms, but some users are set up for a shock in the service of pushing people to socialize in horizon worlds. The virtual social network has voice chat enabled by default. As anyone, particularly any woman who's played an online multiplayer game in the last decade can attest, chatting over live audio with people you don't know is often a harrowing experience and one that opens the floodgates for harassment and hate. Nonetheless, meta's virtual social world doesn't disable the voice chat options off the bat, a strange decision for a company that should be at least a little self aware that it's online platforms have time and time again been used to spread hate. Now the company is adding voice mode, a new set of controls for voice chat that will be rolling out in the coming weeks. Voice chat is inexplicably still enabled by default, but will soon come with some more granular options that let users opt in to disable audio from nearby strangers. There's also a new option to garble strangers voices, turning them into unintelligible friendly sounds, basically meta's version of simlish with garbled voices on, avatars around you will be able to see that you can't hear them via a mic icon with a strike through. You can raise a hand to your ear to hear what they have to say without needing to add them to your friends list, but really, why would you do that? In March, meta introduced a feature called personal boundary to keep a small four foot buffer of space between avatars and horizon worlds. The option which was presumably implemented to address obvious concerns about spatial social networks and sexual harassment is on by default for strangers. In the modern workplace, employees log in and out of countless websites, services, and apps every day. How many of your coworkers use password one two three for every system? How many teams share credentials on a spreadsheet or via email? According to the Verizon data breach investigation report, 81% of corporate data breaches are due to weak or stolen passwords. "It, you guys. All right, will we return? Mahomes and the chiefs. Enter another must win situation against the packers on Sunday, no Aaron Rodgers will return and talk about the focus for mahomes and Andy Reid, they address the media earlier today you'll hear from them. You're watching NFL live, presented by Windows 11 and Intel. And so great. Yes. Kick off your week 9 NFL Sunday at ten a.m. eastern with the countdown crew on ESPN ESPN app. All the early breaking stories injury updates and previews of each game right up into kick-off. Glad you're with us here on NFL live. Before the season, ESPN's football power index gave the Kansas City Chiefs, the highest percent chance to win the Super Bowl after week one, their chance to make the playoff rose to 92%, but entering week 9, look at that. The chiefs have seen the third largest decline in playoff odds since week one behind only the dolphins and Seahawks who have both been without their QB one for part of the season. We got Jeff Darlington here with us from keyshawn, of course, at Jeff, he recently had a chance to talk to mahomes. How much of a toll has the struggles he's had taken on him recently? Well, Laura, that's actually an interesting way of putting it because I don't sense that it's necessarily taking a toll on Patrick in the normal sense. I actually felt some optimism after talking to him because he didn't seem panicked at all, and he also didn't seem like jaded or cynical by the criticism that's come his way. You seem very willing kind of like almost sitting forward in his seat like ready to kind of attack it and address it, but not in the way that a lot of times some athletes can do when they're up against that criticism. He just seemed willing to say that I know we need to get better. I know how we need to get better and we're going to get better. I think from that standpoint, that could resonate a lot within that locker room. If in fact, this chief's team is going to bounce back. Yeah, and when you're a leader of a football team and you're a top notch quarterback where player for that matter in any sport, you know what your problems are, and you know how to fix them. Sometimes it takes a little bit longer to get there than most. But in the end, I'm not worried about Patrick Mahomes, and quite frankly, I'm not really worried about the Kansas City Chiefs. What they've got to do is just get back to the basic drawing board and stop trying to push the ball down the field, take the easy money and then capitalize on that before you start to move on to the next level, just because you got in a way with things in the past, don't necessarily mean you're gonna get away with it now. And I think Patrick Mahomes Andy Reid and Eric B enemy certainly know that. Yeah, shout out to our guy, Marcus spears, on that drive when they ran the ball with gore. It was like, man, this is what they should be doing. We'll see if they continue to go with that. All right, speaking of Marcus, we sent him and Dan over there back into the trenches. One of the best matchups of the line of scrimmage this week's voice. Well, part of it is gonna be with this Kansas City Chiefs Green Bay copy this week. This week I'm letting you know I'm ready. Hi. Anyway, Lucas Patrick versus Chris Jones. Okay, the guard versus the Green Bay Packers versus the defensive tackle from chief. Please let him be a defensive tackle majority of this game. Number one. And the one thing you gotta stop about Chris Jones is his ability to get upfield and pressure your quarterback and create sex. He's top 12 in the league. Right now in sex created. That many people are feasting because Chris Jones bones. No, Aaron Rodgers either obviously, all right, Nick Bosa Tom to show up versus DJ Humphries, Humphries has given up 6 sacks this season so far. Yeah, DJ got his work cut out for him. And obviously we saw last week the Green Bay Packers get a little pressure on this Arizona offensive line. It's a big challenge for DJ. Nick Bosa is an athletic freak, but he has the strength to go power. You better be able to protect it all. Many of times is rookie of the year for Shawn cider versus your big man balding member last week for the Philadelphia Eagles Josh sweat. Can't believe when I tweeted out that this was a good extension for the Philly eagles. I had Philly fans saying he's not good. Yes, he is, right? It's a point of contention with people when they don't see the gaudy sack numbers. Joshua creates so much pressure off the edge. Restaurants later has been playing wonderful. This will be a great matchup. This is about speed. This is about making sure Rachel and feet are right and he can protect that speed and that being off the edge. All right, how about this one? I think it's a big game too. Big one. Hassan Reddick versus Isaiah win. I'm gonna put Reddick up there just because the run game is such a big part of New England with Isaiah win as well, but Reddick's starting to create some issues for offensive. Yeah, he coming along him and burns are two guys that you talk about from Carolina, but the bottom line is this. The New England Patriots are starting to find themselves not identified how they want to play offense, how they work. You just had a tape about Mike Jones getting the ball out of his hands. It's imperative that win is physical in the run game, but also when that protection needs to hold up. Because those guys can go. Yeah. Sorry, this is the biggest matchup for me to speak personally. Harold Angie versus Whitney. Wait, I want to let you know. I wanted to put you up on the board, but he kept saying we got about. You can. Because my brother, the old man, is what I call him now. Spring plan at a very high level. Harold Landry is going crazy this year NFL fans, but it's his motor. It's his technique and his ability to get offensive lineman hands off of him and big with strong suit is to grab you with them big neck hooks and hold on to. You're gonna be one on one a lot. Absolutely. Wait, I got your back for you. I can't believe you did that. When I got your back. When I got you, bro, I got you. You know what? Dan didn't even try to come for you today, Marcus. You said you were ready and he heard. I told him. Yeah, he knows. With the absence of Rogers, Jordan loves now, the man in charge of the packers offense this week against the chiefs. We're gonna tell you exactly the plan for Jordan love and what it should be as he.

"Digital radio so consumer confidence is plunged The last four weeks of really battered the Brits in terms of inflation food and fuel issues And we're going to talk about that with Bloomberg's Lizzie burden coming up on the program Yeah very interesting here This is very different than a pandemic slowing spending considering that online sales also fell last month Yeah absolutely those retail sales numbers we broke for you about 7 a.m. We've also got a lot of PMI data out of Europe today so we'll break that throughout the program France Germany and then the Eurozone Data coming fast and thick of course we heard from many central bankers over the past week voicing some caution on getting too ahead of yourself when it comes to inflation Let's bring you up to speed though in terms of the markets then an a day to check At the Saudi European trading we are up two tenths of 1% on the U.S. stock 600 The features had pointed higher although we've also had a pretty good month actually in terms of European stocks for the U.S. we closed a record high yesterday up three tenths of 1% U.S. features though a little bit off this morning down by a tenth of 1% for the S&P 500 But the big overhang in markets is around the concern around inflation The Bank of England's chief economist talking about November being sort of finally balanced in terms of a rate hike U.S. benchmark yields trading at one spot 6 7 three so down three basis points UK gilt yields on the ten year one spot 2% Germany is at negative 9 basis points Also a lot of interest and strong demand for tips in the U.S. effectively investors are trying to protect against the risk of elevated inflation So that is really what we're watching Also in terms of metals rising prices for industrial metals this morning but some relief in the Asian session because of this report around China evergreen paying one bond interest payment so that gave some relief in the CSI 300 up by a 6 tenths of 1% Danny All right let's get some of the stock movers of this morning with our stocks to watch as Bloomberg's Joe Easton who joins us in our London studio Joe no surprise you're looking at earnings and starting with auto sector That's right So we start with Renault This is quite an interesting report really Renault over in France They're saying they're going to produce around half a million fewer cars and this year than their previous guidance suggested So quite negative on that front but actually I'm saying quite a few traders and analysts pretty positive on the fact that when I have maintained their margins which was expected to be a negative part of the report given the supply supply constraints But actually Renault being quite positive on that The stock falling around 1% so whereas those big numbers in terms of the guidance cut you would expect to see a big slump only down a little bit more than the actual broader French markets day for Renault And of course supply chain issues squarely in focus for consumer good earnings as well and L'oreal and other stock reporting this morning That's right So L'oreal actually looks like a really positive one they're saying that there's been a big rebound in cosmetic cells make up and hair products And they're saying this is due to the fact that we're having the big unlocking people going out going on holiday going out partying and kneading these products against their for their seat and that big increase in demand The area that's weaker is the home products So it's obviously a bit of a reverse where people aren't people are going out more to salons and spending on that side And I'm seeing that stock opening up around 6% today and analysts at Bloomberg intelligence saying keep an eye on the entire sector in cosmetics set to boost that whole industry L'oreal up 6% in Paris Yeah I guess less mask wearing means that more makeup is gonna be put on You're also looking at a Whirlpool of course a U.S. company yesterday but the read across from that to Europe That's right So electrolux over in Sweden dropping around 1.3% at the moment Whirlpool as you mentioned in the U.S. there are certain they're saying there and supply chain issues really worse than expected and actually interestingly what they're saying is they're going to have to start shipping and refrigerators and dishwashers and those kind of products that we know them for by air instead of by sea and land which is much more costly and the warriors that companies like electrolytes and other firms will have to do the same It'll weigh on their margins more and as such we're seeing letch Luxe down 1.4% in Stockholm Joe Thank you so much keeping us on top of all the movers this morning that Bloomberg's Joe Easton Let's go to our top stories now So is a rate hike next month still on the cards here in Britain The decision whether to raise interest rates is live and finally balance that is what the Bank of England and the chief economist Hugh pill told the Financial Times but it makes Hanna George has more The Bank of England is in an uncomfortable position Hugh pill says that UK inflation may top 5% in the coming months far above the bank's target of 2% But he added that the pace of price gains will moderate in the second half of next year While money markets are anticipating a rate increase in November pills remarks suggests that a hike isn't a done deal But that he may favor acting to curb inflation Pill also signaled that any future tightening doesn't need to be overly restrictive and he had a warning for investors saying there's a bit too much excitement in the focus on rates right now In London I'm Hannah George Bloomberg daybreak Europe Well despite all that it does seem that British households are racing for expected interest rate increases from the Bank of England and they're less willing to make big purchases ahead of the crucial Christmas period According to latest survey by GF K UK consumer confidence fell in October to the lowest level since the country was stuck in lockdowns The main source of worry surging inflation food and fuel shortages along with climbing COVID-19 cases Well also just breaking earlier this morning UK retail sales fell unexpectedly for a 5th month as that consumer confidence slid that adds to evidence that the economic recovery is losing momentum so the volume of goods sold in stores and online fell two tenths of 1% last month economists had expected an increase of 6 tenths of 1% So it's the longest period of consecutive monthly declines on record and it came despite panic buying of fuel during a supply crisis Well let's move to the UK where the fed is imposing new rules on personal investing for officials at the Central Bank The move follows trading disclosures that led to the resignations of Dallas fed president Robert Kaplan in Boston's Eric Rosen green Here's more with Bloomberg Steve Matthews They're prohibited from purchasing individual stocks from holding individual bonds from holding derivatives The rules require even for the securities they do hold they require that they have 45 days advanced notice for purchasing our sale of securities They have to get approval for purchasing their sale of securities and they have to hold anything that they do hold for.

"Me. Ohio republican senator rob portman because he has a pretty generally modern record and he's retired so no real political cost anyway. well what. What are your thoughts on this. The cr yeah. I probably would have voted with Senate leader mcconnell I probably typically would right around and look. I think this was a this was a republican win in that they got essentially the clean bill. They want it right That there's an extension They avoided the the argument that they've somehow shut down the government But at the same time they're keeping everybody's feet to the fire by by setting a by making only run through december so Look this is what mcconnell wanted. And i i often lament Republicans were the casey stangl. Can't anyone here play this game But mitch mcconnell played the game. He played it well. And i you know kudos to. I don't i don't think he you know you. And i when we talked to a couple of weeks ago. Neither one of us leave that we would reach this. You know shutdown type thing was it was brinksmanship and someone would Would do something eventually at and they did so. Yeah i'm i'm in the same position i've completely unsurprised about that. Cr are just a basically a matter of course at this point and so yeah. I think it was pretty unsurprising. I actually think this was the way it should have gone. I was not. I was not crazy about tying the cr to the debt ceiling in any case i think there are two separate things and so i'm perfectly fine with with how this happened and speaking and i should've i should've yeah. I should have made that clear what i was talking about. I said clean bill. That's what the democrats had wanted was votes were drawn on both at the same time and republicans are are very much opposed to giving democrats a free pass on the that ceiling absolutely and speaking of the debt ceiling noth-. Nothing much has changed really with that though this week. Treasury secretary janet yellen said that even with the extraordinary measures the department is taking the debt ceiling will be reached by october eighteenth. But she also said you know that it's only an estimate and that this uncertainty underscores the critical importance of not waiting to raise or suspend the debt limit and yellen also. This week voiced support for legislation introduced in. May that would repeal the debt ceiling entirely. She noted that as congress makes these decisions approves these decisions on taxes and spending. It should also provide the ability to essentially honor those prior obligations. And i wanted to get your take on that. I mean janet. Yellen nova lot about the economy as she's only in economist. Not only the treasury secretary but she's also a former chair of the federal reserve. And so what do you think about You know her ideas and yeah. Let's just repeal the debt ceiling entirely..

And which i would i would honestly i would become patted me on the back. He said. keep on doing what you're doing. I said douchen. I didn't say you can't take my tag on rebel. No trouble shot starbucks roka. Did you notice the police presence at starbucks. I did not dot a lot lot of cops. I came in a different way. Oh yeah you're you're you're you're addicted i am you're addicted to. Im am once. I got back in last week. I'm like this. Is the life like you have a driver now. they don't talk to you. You get to set the temperature before you even get into the car. You had the lead. That was regular uber. And now you're like you're smoking great hydro or back in the day. That's all i rode was over black four times expensive now. It's ridiculous this before they had baracks and they had uber all these different tiers right. They just have like uber. Uber black and i would always take uber black because it was only like five dollars or ten dollars more expensive and then they come out with all these fancy tears and so i take those because their way cheaper you know three dollars versus twenty five trying to justify this little to no i m. He seems like he's a little defensive. I am. I will. Totally take uber black anywhere. I go now. I i clark the other day. We went to Fan expo and he got in this car that had ac. It had a automatic door locking doors. It was incredible. He he was like it was like a kid. Visiting willy wonka factory for the first time like this is amazing. I didn't know the cars could do this. Like i'm the guy even opened the door for him. Not like i'm the my hand getting limo right. You're on your way to join the diamond club with me. Oh yeah. I'm taking it everywhere. I go now. The cost me eighty dollars round trip. But it's worth it by so yeah. Clark went to a fan expo for the first time this week i comic con. You've ever been. yeah correct. Yes what was your first without getting into what we did and all that yet. What was your first impression walking into that building. So walking in i was Actually bad kind of rundown looking. But that might as well. I mean the event i'll mandates laid down looking actually I rather enjoyed it. There's a lot to take in. What did i I mean the vendors were was was what really kind of surprised me. His all of these videos at different comic cons. And it's just it just looks like a a massive people in costumes and just kind of you know co mingling. But they're you know you have vendors and you know. There was the celebrity booths and whatnot and I was actually kind of a surprise that there were not as many people in cost him. Just look like a bunch of people are on their lunch. Break china also. We went day. One right opened up four. Pm you know if you today or yesterday. Yeah there would be all sorts of people in costumes. I'm sure the parking lot. The one behind the convention center like next to the highway was packed. Yesterday when i came back saturday's crazy. Yeah i mean honestly we probably pick the the the right time to go. I'm really trying to be around that many people we got in. It wasn't super packed. The first thing we did was he went to go see Kevin conroy who we had on last week voice of batman the batman and we waited in line for more. You say thirty minutes forty minutes. Yeah and then we finally get up to the line and we picked the picture we want. Kevin assigned for the hallway for a wallow graph. I say hey kevin you. We're on our show last week For those who don't know there was about a ten minute delay in between when you're supposed to call in and when we picked up because we had a phone issue we didn't realize we were having and so at one point. I told spider. Like i think we lost and we're never ten. Ten minutes is a long time. If it was me i would call it twice. And then they didn't answer forget it but he kept trying and so we started the show as kevin wasn't coming on and then he called like. Hey i almost gave up. I'm like glad. I'm glad you didn't give up because i've waited fifteen years fifteen long years to talk to you and that's why he's your verse line. He is my bruce wayne batum westwood. I think adam was would have given up on you. Adam was give up on the house. Twenty for twenty minutes and he didn't answer find there it is. I sent an email and then exit of and then his his guy calls me the next.

"4 million a month for last four months in natural record Why are they doing that Well there's 10.9 million jobs opening those plenty of jobs though these people are leaving looking for better jobs more salary more time off better working conditions for whatever because of that that's inflationary Right Think about it You can always people quit 4 million people quit That means they're looking for million people looking for a better job more salary And that happens for four months Salaries are going up So that's a flash area So it's not just the goods and services that prices are going up but it's also the salaries Now the 1980s the mid 80s I believe it was not possible It could be late 70s There it got into that cycle where wagers would go up and prices would go up in ways to go up in prices So that's what I mentioned before earlier this week That's what I'm looking I be looking at that Is that happening Are we going to get into that cycle Because it's a bad cycle to get into I don't think we will why Because we can export inflation by having things made outside the country We've been doing that for years and years and years and that's why we had such a low inflation Because we're many years we send stuff to China There's still a big producer right So they pay very little So that was no pressure on wage raises here in the United States That's why you want to bring back that manufacturing because that will raise wages for our workers Isn't that what we want I think we do We want higher wages because we want to keep our middle class Vibrant Do we want to bring back some of those jobs We really do Anyways so let's keep moving Here comes another caller question from a 24 hour 7 day suddenly four hours 7 days a week voice bank line 88 99 chart Hello Steven Justin This is Matt up administering county Really enjoy your show Question about Texas roadhouse I own some of their shares It's done well for me over a 7 year period and I'm just trying to decide whether to hang onto it or sell it And it has done well during the pandemic and wanted your take on the stock Texas roadhouse All right Thanks guys Bye bye So this is a restaurant operate franchises 363 634 Texas roadhouse full service restaurants and 49 states and ten foreign countries It's a $6.4 billion company so it's pretty big They made money in the COVID year 2020 made 45 cents a share Before that the 2019 year they made 2.46 So jumping to this year they're going to make 3.67 So skipping that COVID year their growth rate is still intact Next year it's going to go up another 13% of 4.16 cents and it's a $91 stock So as we were talking about a 25 PE or so which is pretty expensive for a food company for a restaurant company But their sales growth in the most recent quarter was 89% or before that was 23 Before that it was shrinking for the four quarters So it's recovering and starting to pick up and that's very good That's probably why the stock has done pretty well My view is expensive then I'll play a dividend owner's management owned 6% of the company they don't have a lot of debt which is also good Companies ran very well They were trying to equities a little weak and not only a lot we could only return to 3% I like to be in the teens This is only 3% That would be my biggest problem I think that I will look at it I don't like your return on equity The stock price is high compared to this fundamentals but not unreasonably so So if the sales growth continues it will easily be worth the price We shade that appreciate the call Thank you and that was simple a TX R 8 Texas "The iheartradio app. Oh welcome to the big five o'clock hour for the end of the week voice. Line people in just about fifteen minutes from now. There's two rounds of them. They just sound off whatever their worked up about during the past week. We'll play of their calls in between the two rounds. We do have a hack for the dumpster at lana. The mob members or here. They'll help us. Throw this hack into the dumpster. It was an easy choice this week. Particularly with the development that occurred a week ago and then yesterday concerning the criminal justice system in the state of california this particular hack has been trying to make it easier and easier on criminals for far too many years we actually had an encounter with them on air about three years ago. We'll play part of and then we'll get. Oh this person. All policies let criminals out early so and they ended up killing people. Yeah but that's what this guy does makes makes it easier for innocent people to die. He gets reelected every year for decades. Go figure so News outlets from around the country are trying to figure out what's interesting angle to cover the recall of gavin. Newsom out there in crazy california. What can we do. There might be a little different but seems really right on in terms of Topicality well a writer. By the of lisa bono's for the washington post has the headline climate change inequality a recall vote. How the french laundry embodies california. Yes is this is a keeper. One one of the most expensive restaurants in the nation embodies the whole state notice. She could written an article on all the businesses that were closed. All the kids that were thrown out of school How the unemployment department got backed up with millions. And millions of claims that that's real world real people suffering but instead it's like climate change and inequality at the french laundry out bodies staff. It's like all right. How far out of touch can you be a. She explains it this way. We're reading ahead here. But let's start with the difficulty of snagging table. If you're not a government official or a high priced lobbyists. You'll have to get the old fashioned way reservations for the entire month open at ten. Am pacific on the first day the previous month. So if you wanna table for november. Set your alarm now and recruit a handful of friends with fast fingers to book a table on october. First before you're charged sinti or credit card and yes. Diners charged up front. The french laundry has whetted your appetite with anticipation there's nothing more delicious than exclusivity when you finally arrive and drive right past and drive right without noticing because one tour. I said i thought it would be on a mountainside. You're reminded that california wealth is subtle like the tech billionaire. Who shows up to dinner in jeans and flip flops or the celebrity who lives in venice bungalow. The french laundry exterior is not showing from the street. The large dark gray house. The first level covered in ivy and shades drawn obscuring. The faces of whoever is dining inside is well appointed but not extravagant. The sign out front is easily blocked. A stretch limo stops by to drop off patrons. The opulence at the french laundry kicks in once. You're inside the food. The why the service. Then she gets into this thing about whether to insider outside and apparently they do charge more. If you want to sit outside four hundred fifty dollars a person four hundred fifty dollars three fifty if you wanna sit inside which gets talking about the air quality and of course we're about one hundred and fifty miles. She said from the dixie fire one of the largest state history but now here she goes with the woke crowd california's low income residents and people have cut are disproportionately exposed to pollution from vehicles poorer. Californians are less likely to be able to afford portable air purifiers. Expensive air filtration systems. They're more likely to have jobs. They keep outdoors and expose. You gotta love this. She's talking about rich. People like newsome who pay four fifty outdoors in the fresh air up in the mountains. Wine country and that veers into poor people can't afford air purifiers. Wealthier residents can fleet a second. Homes are vacation rentals on. The air gets bad okay. Poor people cannot wow. She just discovered this. She just discovered that wealthier people live better than poor people. I never noticed that. Did you notice that. did you notice. Poor people don't eat outdoors for four fifty plate. Never would've occurred to me then. She talks about food insecurity. It's one of your favorite terms. Both california's we're not dining at michelin starred restaurants during the pan-demic many weren't even getting enough to eat a team of ucla. Researchers found that in the first three months of the pandemic three million adults in california lack sufficient food a twenty two percent increase since before the pandemic. This is the part of the jonah's that come. I see somebody fat be outcome. I see so many people if everyone is so food insecure. How does that work. Nobody seems to be food insecure. The rise and food insecurity is a part of the reason. Newsome's dinner at the french laundry nearly a year ago struck so many as towed okay. Can i stop her their first of all nobody uses the term food insecurity and most people had no idea what it means. It has nothing to do with the reason that people got pissed off about his photo at the french laundry. They got pissed off because he had ordered everybody to wear masks. You can't eat indoors. In fact restaurants were closed for indoor and outdoor dining. He closed outdoor dining. Just three weeks later this from the day you went to the french laundry and then then you had the photograph come out so if he had eaten at like a fright as it would still be a story. You're right but because it was the french laundry with the lobbyists took lobbyists. It was them not wearing masks and still nobody asks him. You were telling everybody. This was a horribly deadly disease. We're all going. We all should be afraid. We're all gonna die. Hospitals overloaded bob by. You're the one who said that. How come you weren't afraid. How come the twenty-one other sucks you were having dinner with weren't afraid. She writes california. One of the highest measures of income inequality in the country. Only five other states have bigger gaps between the wealthiest and the low income families. Much of that disparity comes through in the fancy homes and flashy cars that overshadow those who are hungry and homeless but it's also reflected who can afford the luxury of time being a five hour meal or a two week vacation who can outsource their childcare. They're cooking and they're shopping. And who's providing those services and you know when when she makes us point. I do agree that the state has incredible income disparity so but this crowd that lives at the top of the people. Were talking about here especially the tech people that go to the french laundry. They're the ones that vote for these idiots. Yeah they did have destroyed. This state drove out the middle class. And that's an taxes. Why do wealthy people vote for politicians that turn san francisco into a sore. Why do they do that. Why do wealthy people in san francisco elect politicians who've made it one of the most disgusting cities in america..

"Company. You want again roy. Sure joel no rico. No i don't because you want you got what they wanted to have more coming picks you have more come off. You know you one big big you want to give you the picks i'll just go your would say all you're on track. No you didn't lose. I can't believe i'm not like our what. Rico you know what i can't believe picks relief. Can i just say real quick. I can't one fucking people attractive. Lost people killed for this. You know what. I can't believe rico is that we spent fifty minutes talking about a salary then fifty one minutes. You're like i'm actually getting paid more. That's what i can't. that's honorable. horrible knows honorable. You wanted to get paid more than he didn't want to take pay cut right and you didn't. You didn't have back. i don't i went flat. No but i don't think go flat because you were never making what you thought you would like. We didn't know how much you make. You also have the. And i. And i i let go. It was your job to when you send it over and the number came through like all righty bump it. That's like saying the the president of a bank when someone goes on. Atm is a fuck up. Has you write it out. Didn't they give it to you for review beforehand. No by the way you want. You want rico. Do you want an exact apples to apples. Comparison here began talking about other people. Hank will back me up. This literal exact thing happened with bill football. He was getting paid more than we thought and then he tried to negotiate their higher for eighty hours a week. Yeah a higher salary when he came in. And i said we're not going to pay you more just because we fucked up and we rectify also going to say something give. The money is not an apples to apples situation but there once was a guy by the name of bubbly gang around here and he was doing bubbly stuff and the only people that didn't know the bubbly gang was like happening. Was myself you. Dan and like paul other people knew if you thought i paid you and bubbly told me about everything is just like how could he omit this piece of information of what was happening. If you thought i paid you more hourly goodness in my heart and you thought i did on purpose and you didn't thanked me for. That doesn't sound like something you do. That sounds like somebody who knew a mistake was made in their favor. Let's not a thank you a million times for that extra money. No i thought that was his business. Yeah i didn't was like are at. That was an understatement. Like i don't believe you here. Here's one other thing. I'll throw out there because i told you the billy football story. And what did i tell billy football. I said were not going to give you a raise from a fake salary that you are making. That was a mistake. But what i will do for you is. I will have your back if you produce for this company when you go into dave and asked for a race and guess what. Billy has been producing. His blogs have been huge. He's been doing a great job. He's been doing a lot of content. And when he goes into dave in december. I will tell. Dave billy has been doing a great job. I will tell. Dave rico's men doing a great job. Like i when i when i have my guys. I always go to bat for them. And it's kind of disrespectful to me when you're like well. I need more anymore anymore. When i telling you i will go to bat for you. I want you more. We pay well. I can't give you more on a fake salary. That i didn't even know existed but i have. We signed the contract. You one where he co. You dance for you you know. You're you're getting paid more. Yes last year and off of okay a bank when there is a bank era. The bank makes you repay. Yeah actually now. That i'm thinking about it. If you actually do the math you're getting paid the number you want if you count all the extra sauce last year by accident they you're not having to pay back. You're getting that now. Can you. at least say thank you that i'm not going to be like. Hey riyals us this. Why thought i earned it you. You signed a contract with a number on it right. Yeah you you paid well about no no. That's the mistake. Maybe that's the disconnect. The contract that i signed was was that number. Oh they just sent the wrong number. I thought that was the right. Yeah i mean but that's all we got you got the auto renew number right so and again you are business guy. I'm not going to bother you. I i thought the change the change was your ex nor conversation with them or long conversation which down through mud. That was the hardest to go. She never thank god. I've read art of the deal because that was not easy. Let's get to the your conversation with them. I didn't win. You want you you one not. I think we had a now that we're now we're talking about. I have an idea of what i think. They probably did. Cause you were getting paid before that correct. Yes no but he talking. I was getting c. Yes seasonally. I bet. They added that yeah. They didn't they added by accident. That's my guess what they did. So you're good. They stacked it on by now. Getting paid guess they didn't cut your seasoned. They added what i said. Your new thing was the to me. Numbers add up. Okay and look at the number of times. What's your if you count the extra money that you made last year and then the auto renew this year. So let's say that you're at the real number last year and now you're now you're getting this right. It basically is like if we had a part time employee who prove themselves and we're paying them part time like here's their contract and they don't stop they don't somehow get. The new thing has taken out the old correct. So you're good. You actually did win. He won he fucked me in the us. You fuck me caller on. Yeah you fuck me in the. And i don't think you did. Your supercilious are the number that you gave was four limited stuff. I've done more after. I don't know let's not you know you want now you one you know what the listeners one. Because next week there's no more negotiating right loss. Two hours i listen forty. Got this all the way why next week. It's going to be all football. "Dropped when she added an issue. Because to me this was the first time the first actual purely negative emotional thing. I still felt like that was coming from a place of anger last week. So i still emerged but everything he makes from. That has some strategic. I think this one has your strategic game was actively against your own game and was emotional like last time she flips like. She was an adjustment and a bad situation at the time. Like it wasn't a great situation to flip. It was better than being on the border with our and having nowhere to play and there was actually like bid this time i just could not understand why she on an esu. Well i i really wonder if there is something about the fact that they aren't necessarily together. I think what. I've sort of wrapped my reiner mine around tried to in this episode is that we thought okay there are there are nephew and centenary here as the double agents but i think what we actually have is something i wanted to say. Unique to at least twenty years of survivor. I've watched which are too independently minded free agents in this game and that. It's not necessarily like the wu. Tony we're gonna flip back and forth every vote together. It's not an incident sunset seemingly checking in with each other to figuring out which way they want to vote. It seems like the story were being told that these are two people who feel like they're already on the bottom of this buna majority which we will certainly talk about as well. I think this episode is by far the maybe the most straightforward one. We had besides kion episode. But at least. I think he did a good job of at least setting up. What's to come next. And it seems like they both have their own resentments with their place in the current totem pole. But it doesn't necessarily seem like they're working together it seems like zomba's we're trying to put an almost double the work of currying favor of both of them to possibly sway them over. That's going to be really unique again. It could all change next week that these two are going to be the ones to really be the fulcrum. And the lisa welsh michael scoop and go back and forth each and every vote right now it really does seem like they're not working in tandem. Which is one reason. Why i think seni who seemed to be a bit jealous of the way that the zomba's sort of welcomed nestle back with open arms was like okay. No no let me pull the pull up the wall that was pulled over. Everyone's is she is not working with you but also this seemed to care about that anyway. I think that's a great point miami. We haven't really seen any sort of strategic compensation between nineteen the whole time so it really seems like they're all pretty independently not gonna makes me think that loss week voice will also independent and.

We're talking about the origins of amazon echo smart speakers in today's episode because this week voiced by research introduced to new reports about smart speaker adoption than the uk germany. Does the uk germany and in each we compare the results to the us adoption from voice parts reports from twenty eighteen through twenty twenty one. So a couple of top line findings. Germany has filed the us adoption pattern very closely but about two years behind however there are several differences related to the frequency of use in the top use cases. Gerbils preferred through the devices so that's interesting and uk. The big news is that the adoption rate leapt past the us twenty twenty. Yes that's true hired option raid the uk. Did you us. "That's so disingenuous guys wednesday. I'm going to tell you a story about this week. Wednesday i had. It was like the busiest. It was like the busiest had my entire life and one of the commitments. That i made this week was that i was going to show up in full power for every coaching call. Which meant that. This livestream that i have the check ins that have after every single coaching. Call that. I showed up. My goal is to show up in full power and so on wednesday. I had six back to back to back to back to back. Calls and each of them were about an hour to an hour and a half long but i made the commitment to show up every single day in full power to every single call and it was the hardest thing i've ever done. Because like those guys that go live consistently no like when you go live. Just drains your energy like especially if you go live a lot in a day like it's exhausting but i'm so fucking disciplined that i showed up to every single coaching call single live in full power with this much energy for six hours straight. And that's what the fuck it takes. Because i'm going to be honest with you guys. The week voice inside of me wanted to cancel and wanted to like be like man over committed myself. Maybe i should just take a break. Maybe i should cancel some of these calls. So i can show up some of them in full power. But then there's this little fucking voice inside of me that's like yo be mark's show up like you said you were going to show up. You said you were going to do something and you need to start listening to that voice if you wanna be successful at guys if you wanna be a high performer. I'm gonna give you a secret to being a high performer ready. You need to know what your own bullshit. Straight up tune it out. I want you guys to imagine all of your excuses and reasons for why you're not where you wanna be as a frequency that you're tuned into right now. It's like a frequency right. It's like a frequency of like on too busy with school right now. I can't work on my business. Or i'm not good at tiktok. That's why i'm not getting on there. Because i don't know how to edit videos or closes in new app for me and i'm so confused and i'm outside of my comfort zone or i'm not video that's why i'm not getting a live streamer. I'm not good at social media. That's why i'm not post. I want you to imagine your bullshit excuses as this frequency that you're tuning into and your accepting as a reality right now right now magical these excuses as a frequency or tune into now understand that the real truth. I want you guys to write this down. If you're taking notes the real truth is always buried beneath bullshit. The real truth is always buried beneath the bullshit and the real truth on finnish coach. You fucking note. You know like we know when we're not performing at the level that we want to. We know you know if you're not being consistent on social media you know if you're not being consistent on tiktok you know if you're not getting on clubhouse you know if you're not posting on infamous coaches you know you also know when you're being lazy with your finished ernie like you know you're fucking sleeping in you know you're making excuses and the like you're tuned into the bullshit frequency in your accepting it as a reality but you need to start listening to that little voice inside of you the truce that little fucking voices inside man. Maybe you're sleeping in a little bit too much..

Paul Theroux's Mexico Journey

"More than fifty years of writing about his epic journeys in Travel Books and novels. Paul through has recently finished a series of road trips on the back roads of Mexico. He wanted to see for himself who lives there how they live and what's really behind the headlines about a migration crisis from south of the US border and by the way you'll have to pardon my weak voice at the time we recorded our interview. It's better now. Paul theroux welcome Doc Ricketts a pleasure to be with you. You know this is such an exciting adventure you went on and right at the beginning of the book you write the Mexican border in the edge of the known world only shadows and danger beyond it and working figures. Hungry criminal predatory fanged fanatical enemies an ungovernable rabble eager to pounce on the unwary traveller so you decided to travel. Tell us where you went on this trip. And why by the rest of that senators and a Tutti fruity of grizzled gringos accident. So why why. Because I noticed that people were stereotyping Korea Typing Mexicans Mexicans who come across the border why they come that illegal looking for welfare making trouble and I thought one of the reasons as we traveled your a great traveller. Rick is to destroy the stereotype to find out what people are really like. What's this story and we find the come from? All sorts of places is in Mexico they might be billion as they might be millionaires. That might have no money at all. Some people in Mexico have less than the average person in Kenya or Bangladesh Rush. So it's not a simple situation but to see it at its best or to see it most clearly. I thought I WANNA go alone. I want to go on my own car. I WANNA the drive up and down. The border. The border that everybody talks about but no one knows that firsthand as written about much and I want to see it drive along the aboard and then drive deep into Mexico and I thought I bought a car for this purpose secondhand car. That wasn't very notable and off. I went not very noticeable but it had Massachusetts license plates on it. That was a little unfortunate. The police said you know they. They looked at my plates. And then they pull you off the road and they say Whether or Saturday do you know what I can do to you and you say what exactly do you want. And then they say pay me some more Didi. Is that the open. This happens but people say how awful and I think. Yeah how awful but on the plane of snakes is travel book and travelers travel writers. Rav Paul Writers have the last word so I have the last word and that's a side of Mexico. The police are excited. Mexico that exists and as travelers were not looking in for la La land in Orlando. We're looking for the reality. Go south of the border. We're looking to see things as they are the good the bad the ugly the the fun that whatever it is the sunshine the rain you know I was the Peace Corps joined the Peace Corps nineteen sixty three and I went to Central Africa. I didn't know what I was GonNa find was into the wild blue yonder and what I found was not at all what I was expecting. Not at all our guest right now and travel with. Rick Steves is author Paul. He just published an account of his road. Trips from the back roads of Mexico his new book introduces us to the people he met and explains what he learned about life in Mexico far from the comforts of resorts in the safety. Excuse tollways the books called on the plane of snakes. Your book is about the wall and I'm fascinated by walls in my travels. The Berlin Wall the walls between the Protestant and Catholic neighborhoods in Belfast. The wall of between Palestine and Israel and in this wall I remember when I was in the Holy Land on one side. The Wall looked a certain way. And then the other from the other side that looked a lot different tell us about the actual wall standing there especially on the Mexican side looking at it. What's it like where the wall is a big piece of iron mongering That looks like it looks like a prison wall. I mean it looks ah fence it has slats in it. The first one that I saw was in Nogales may be eight years ago or possibly more and it wasn't a wall that you could see through. It was sexually big iron plates steel plates. I guess and there were there. Were Rusty thirty feet high. You couldn't see through. It looked like it didn't look like offense at all actually looked like a wall That's now slats. What is it looked like it? It looks like something that is surmountable. Looks like you could climb over and people do it. Looks like could tunnel under it and people do it also looks very beautiful. It looks like a piece of sculpture by the artist Christo it looks like Krista went to the border and said I'm going to show the world. What a border looks like in metal and so the the fence to steal border fence goes up and down through hill and Dale undulating up? As far as the I can see and you think how amazing but how primitive too because house obviously keep any vote. No when I go as a traveler to these walls the odd thing is I can pass them easily. I can go from Israel to Palestine I in the cold where I could go between East and West. You were south of the wall and you wrote about the women in the diners there that kind of saw you you as a maybe a ticket to the north. It must have been interesting for you to be in these hardscrabble. Little spots in the wall was so close and you could just waltz right back and forth. They couldn't not only that it's only yeah waltzing bank in Nogales Arizona. You visit door in the wall. The first time I saw it there was a turnstile where you're in a street in Arizona. You know with parked in the sunshine. POKKA walk down the end of the street. Go through the door in your in Mexico is your show you I mean I showed by. Id and just by walking through a door. That for travel is such an amazing experience to me. It was an experience of the kind that I'd I'd never had before I've cross borders. You've been through many borders but most borders that are memorable you walk across Kenya Ethiopia China China and Russia Kazakhstan Benetton wherever you know Canada and say but Mexico is it's the wall and also there's another language behind the wall is cuisine beyond the wall and the women that you mentioned some of whom want to go over the wall around it to work in a motel or a hotel in the states Have left children behind husband's behind and the going what I found. Is that coming to make a living
