Three years ago, ragout on a lion joined me to talk about them again to voice assistant and the smart speaker, which had only been in the market a few months at that point. Now, more recently, ray goo submitted an article to voice bat AI, chronicling them again to journey, what the company has learned, and where it's headed with the voice assistant today. I caught up with him at mobile world Congress in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago. To get the story behind the story. So ragu talks about voice assistants in media, the decision to discontinue the smart speaker, expansion into other use cases, and a lot more. He's had a front row seat to the development of the industry and where the technology capabilities and the consumer adoption intersected, and one of the few companies out there that actually was competitive with the tech giants, voice assistant offerings, won a lot of rewards. It was really regarded as one of the most capable solutions out there. So I know you're going to like this interview, but before we get to it, I did want to let you know that in a couple of weeks, voice bought is hosting a special event about the collision of large language models generative AI features and traditional NLU based voice AI solutions. This has been an area of a lot of activity, but it's not clear to me that people have seen it all in one place before. "Winning her congressional district in New York City according to AP, and Dan Goldman, winning New York's tenth congressional district. In New York's 11th, former representative max rose has failed in his attempt to defeat representative Nicole malliotakis the Republican who unseated rose back in 2020. Let's cross to our studios in San Francisco at Baxter with more on some of the races in the Washington D.C. area at yeah, Maryland. Doug a very interesting race now has been going back and forth just in the last half hour. It's changed a hands Neil parrot who is a Republican now is leading David trone with 53% of the vote, parrot. 36% counted. So we'll keep a close eye on that one. Maryland, marijuana legalization, amendment has passed. In Virginia, there are three races that are bellwethers that could be looked at for, you know, for the nation, wexton has a slightly new district with 83% of the vote counted, her district was seen as the easiest seat for Democrats to hold. Now, Stan Berger is behind by about 6000 votes with 83,000 luria behind Higgins by about 19,000 votes and if two of those go, it's gonna be a good night for the Republicans. All right, all right, Ed, let's get back to special coverage of the midterm elections. This is Bloomberg's special coverage of midterms 2022. I'm David Weston. Another key race in these midterm elections is Nevada. We haven't heard from Nevada yet, so we now turn to Bloomberg's Francesca maggioni. She's joining us from Las Vegas. So Francesca is actually we don't know what you're the results yet. Is that right? Yeah, we don't know the results yet, the Senate race is a very tight race, but we probably won't know tonight or even tomorrow and the polls just closed and we won't know any results until the last person has voted. Okay, so what do we know at the process? Do we have any sense of how many people are voting, how many people voted in advance in an early voting absentee? What do we know about the process? So one of the data points that we have about the process is in washoe county Nevada, Republican in person voter turnout was around 52% versus democratic voter turnout that was around 22% as of 3 p.m.. This is not that unexpected since democratic voters are usually more keen to vote through mail. But this is one of the indicators we have as of now and hopefully as the night progresses we're going to have some more data on that. So of course we have a Democrat who is the incumbent there, but it was thought that she had a very tough race in front of her. Do we have a sense Francesca with the issues are that might be driving Nevada voters? Yeah, so many of the voters that I spoke to are really concerned with the cost of living rent in Nevada has jumped up dramatically, it's also really interesting because senator court does not know is the only Latino senator. As of now and the Latino voters are annoyed about or upset about high cost, but at the same time they're both the Republican and the Democrat are trying to appeal to this vote that is really important in Nevada Latino voters account for like 30% of Nevada voters. Of course, Nevada is heavily dependent on the travel and leisure, particularly because of the casinos, the travel that goes out to Las Vegas. Is there any leftover residual resentment of shutdowns? Because the pandemic, or are we past that? Well, I was actually with the culinary workers union this morning. It's a union that has mobilized about more than 60,000 canvases and they are actually endorsing the Democratic Party. So it seems that this workforce is really keen on supporting the current democratic incumbent. Okay, Francesca, thank you so much for reporting from Las Vegas as Bloomberg's Francesca baglione. We welcome now our Wall Street week voices votes reporter. She's now a boss. So Charlotte you've been doing a terrific job keeping us honest here about what role of Wall Street plays in this election. What do we know? I want to point out something about that debt ceiling debate because that is a key issue when you come to Wall Street and asset prices. Let's listen first to two sides of this debate, first coming from congressman Kevin Brady, who spoke to you a little earlier today. Our debts will be paid, they'll be paid on time. I'm a little surprised this issue feels like a little more of that economic fear mongering. We're hearing from The White House about if Republicans take the majority, the economy will crash or social security will end. All those things have been debunked. Now, David, I also want to bring you inside a conversation I had earlier today with Charles Myers, who is the chair of global, which advises and works with more than a hundred clients that is asset managers that says he's really worried that we're really getting close to the fiscal edge or very close to technical defaults, and the only way to avoid that is if Mitch McConnell does the right thing in December, he says, and he thinks it's going to be very difficult for him to do that. That would be having 9 Republican lawmakers really side with the Democrats here to raise the debt ceiling. And that's because as we know, that debt burden has burdened past $31 trillion for the first time ever and is very close to hitting that ceiling what Charles Myers believes is at the beginning of next year. Now, I want to put this in a perspective to you 2011 was raised a couple of times here. What exactly happened in 2011 aside from just that the U.S. was downgraded, which of course was the first time in history you did see, take a look at that, a massive drawdown inequities from peak to trough that was more than 17% almost 18%. That's in P that year ended about flat on the year. And even through September, you saw that overhang really laughed. So months of concern, even after the initial dispute was brought up. There was something else that was different about that time and now David. At that time, it was only equities that really saw the pressure from the debt ceiling debate at this degree. And remember, a lot of folks now, BTIG as well, drawing that concern that this will be similar to 2011. This time around treasuries and the dollar may also be under pressure if this really gets to the degree that people are really worried about. As we've said, this is a two sided issue. They may not want it to get to that point, but to the point that you've been making all night with your guests, this could be a point of leverage as Republicans, certain Republicans may want to start raining in fiscal spending and other issues in the budget at a time when we have the U.S. debt to GDP ratio ballooning past a 120%. And that is very different of an environment that we're dealing with today than in all of the prior times that we've dealt with this. Thank you so much as Bloomberg and I basic. So Rick, apart from the debt ceiling issue. What are the other issues that business should be concerned about with the Republicans in charge? Or maybe they should be happy? Some will be happy on issues related to government spending and taxes. There's no question that Republicans may have a much more conservative point of view than what Democrats were calling for with billionaire taxes and taxes on minimum corporate profits and things like that. So that will be a sea change. I would also say an area that Republicans will go after. But for different reasons, is big tech. Both Democrats and Republicans have their issues with big tech. Republicans issues are slightly different. They include things like not using enough conservative voices in their algorithms and things like that. Democrats have a lot of issues related to privacy and other issues on that scale. Will Republicans work with Democrats to sort of unite against big tech is going to be a big question coming forward or do they just move out on their own agenda that has their own specific questions? Gee, this is a little bit like the debt ceiling where I hear about it all the time, but nothing ever gets done. How many hearings have we had about big tech? Where Democrats and Republicans beat up as Rick says for somewhat different reasons but beat up the big day. But nothing happens. Do we really expect anything really

"Quoting TechCrunch. Meta might soon want everyone to hop into its playful virtual realms, but some users are set up for a shock in the service of pushing people to socialize in horizon worlds. The virtual social network has voice chat enabled by default. As anyone, particularly any woman who's played an online multiplayer game in the last decade can attest, chatting over live audio with people you don't know is often a harrowing experience and one that opens the floodgates for harassment and hate. Nonetheless, meta's virtual social world doesn't disable the voice chat options off the bat, a strange decision for a company that should be at least a little self aware that it's online platforms have time and time again been used to spread hate. Now the company is adding voice mode, a new set of controls for voice chat that will be rolling out in the coming weeks. Voice chat is inexplicably still enabled by default, but will soon come with some more granular options that let users opt in to disable audio from nearby strangers. There's also a new option to garble strangers voices, turning them into unintelligible friendly sounds, basically meta's version of simlish with garbled voices on, avatars around you will be able to see that you can't hear them via a mic icon with a strike through. You can raise a hand to your ear to hear what they have to say without needing to add them to your friends list, but really, why would you do that? In March, meta introduced a feature called personal boundary to keep a small four foot buffer of space between avatars and horizon worlds. The option which was presumably implemented to address obvious concerns about spatial social networks and sexual harassment is on by default for strangers. In the modern workplace, employees log in and out of countless websites, services, and apps every day. How many of your coworkers use password one two three for every system? How many teams share credentials on a spreadsheet or via email? According to the Verizon data breach investigation report, 81% of corporate data breaches are due to weak or stolen passwords. Well, Laura, that's actually an interesting way of putting it because I don't sense that it's necessarily taking a toll on Patrick in the normal sense. I actually felt some optimism after talking to him because he didn't seem panicked at all, and he also didn't seem like jaded or cynical by the criticism that's come his way. You seem very willing kind of like almost sitting forward in his seat like ready to kind of attack it and address it, but not in the way that a lot of times some athletes can do when they're up against that criticism. He just seemed willing to say that I know we need to get better. I know how we need to get better and we're going to get better. I think from that standpoint, that could resonate a lot within that locker room. If in fact, this chief's team is going to bounce back. Yeah, and when you're a leader of a football team and you're a top notch quarterback where player for that matter in any sport, you know what your problems are, and you know how to fix them. Sometimes it takes a little bit longer to get there than most. But in the end, I'm not worried about Patrick Mahomes, and quite frankly, I'm not really worried about the Kansas City Chiefs. What they've got to do is just get back to the basic drawing board and stop trying to push the ball down the field, take the easy money and then capitalize on that before you start to move on to the next level, just because you got in a way with things in the past, don't necessarily mean you're gonna get away with it now. And I think Patrick Mahomes Andy Reid and Eric B enemy certainly know that. Yeah, shout out to our guy, Marcus spears, on that drive when they ran the ball with gore. It was like, man, this is what they should be doing. We'll see if they continue to go with that. All right, speaking of Marcus, we sent him and Dan over there back into the trenches. It's a point of contention with people when they don't see the gaudy sack numbers. Joshua creates so much pressure off the edge. Restaurants later has been playing wonderful. This will be a great matchup. This is about speed. This is about making sure Rachel and feet are right and he can protect that speed and that being off the edge. All right, how about this one? I think it's a big game too. Big one. Hassan Reddick versus Isaiah win. I'm gonna put Reddick up there just because the run game is such a big part of New England with Isaiah win as well, but Reddick's starting to create some issues for offensive. Yeah, he coming along him and burns are two guys that you talk about from Carolina, but the bottom line is this. The New England Patriots are starting to find themselves not identified how they want to play offense, how they work. You just had a tape about Mike Jones getting the ball out of his hands. "Digital radio so consumer confidence is plunged The last four weeks of really battered the Brits in terms of inflation food and fuel issues And we're going to talk about that with Bloomberg's Lizzie burden coming up on the program Yeah very interesting here This is very different than a pandemic slowing spending considering that online sales also fell last month Yeah absolutely those retail sales numbers we broke for you about 7 a.m. We've also got a lot of PMI data out of Europe today so we'll break that throughout the program France Germany and then the Eurozone Data coming fast and thick of course we heard from many central bankers over the past week voicing some caution on getting too ahead of yourself when it comes to inflation Let's bring you up to speed though in terms of the markets then an a day to check At the Saudi European trading we are up two tenths of 1% on the U.S. stock 600 The features had pointed higher although we've also had a pretty good month actually in terms of European stocks for the U.S. we closed a record high yesterday up three tenths of 1% U.S. features though a little bit off this morning down by a tenth of 1% for the S&P 500 But the big overhang in markets is around the concern around inflation The Bank of England's chief economist talking about November being sort of finally balanced in terms of a rate hike U.S. benchmark yields trading at one spot 6 7 three so down three basis points UK gilt yields on the ten year one spot 2% Germany is at negative 9 basis points Also a lot of interest and strong demand for tips in the U.S. effectively investors are trying to protect against the risk of elevated inflation So that is really what we're watching Also in terms of metals rising prices for industrial metals this morning but some relief in the Asian session because of this report around China evergreen paying one bond interest payment so that gave some relief in the CSI 300 up by a 6 tenths of 1% Danny All right let's get some of the stock movers of this morning with our stocks to watch as Bloomberg's Joe Easton who joins us in our London studio Joe no surprise you're looking at earnings and starting with auto sector That's right So we start with Renault This is quite an interesting report really Renault over in France They're saying they're going to produce around half a million fewer cars and this year than their previous guidance suggested So quite negative on that front but actually I'm saying quite a few traders and analysts pretty positive on the fact that when I have maintained their margins which was expected to be a negative part of the report given the supply supply constraints But actually Renault being quite positive on that The stock falling around 1% so whereas those big numbers in terms of the guidance cut you would expect to see a big slump only down a little bit more than the actual broader French markets day for Renault And of course supply chain issues squarely in focus for consumer good earnings as well and L'oreal and other stock reporting this morning That's right So L'oreal actually looks like a really positive one they're saying that there's been a big rebound in cosmetic cells make up and hair products And they're saying this is due to the fact that we're having the big unlocking people going out going on holiday going out partying and kneading these products against their for their seat and that big increase in demand The area that's weaker is the home products So it's obviously a bit of a reverse where people aren't people are going out more to salons and spending on that side And I'm seeing that stock opening up around 6% today and analysts at Bloomberg intelligence saying keep an eye on the entire sector in cosmetics set to boost that whole industry L'oreal up 6% in Paris Yeah I guess less mask wearing means that more makeup is gonna be put on You're also looking at a Whirlpool of course a U.S. company yesterday but the read across from that to Europe That's right So electrolux over in Sweden dropping around 1.3% at the moment Whirlpool as you mentioned in the U.S. there are certain they're saying there and supply chain issues really worse than expected and actually interestingly what they're saying is they're going to have to start shipping and refrigerators and dishwashers and those kind of products that we know them for by air instead of by sea and land which is much more costly and the warriors that companies like electrolytes and other firms will have to do the same It'll weigh on their margins more and as such we're seeing letch Luxe down 1.4% in Stockholm Joe Thank you so much keeping us on top of all the movers this morning that Bloomberg's Joe Easton Let's go to our top stories now So is a rate hike next month still on the cards here in Britain The decision whether to raise interest rates is live and finally balance that is what the Bank of England and the chief economist Hugh pill told the Financial Times but it makes Hanna George has more The Bank of England is in an uncomfortable position Hugh pill says that UK inflation may top 5% in the coming months far above the bank's target of 2% But he added that the pace of price gains will moderate in the second half of next year While money markets are anticipating a rate increase in November pills remarks suggests that a hike isn't a done deal But that he may favor acting to curb inflation Pill also signaled that any future tightening doesn't need to be overly restrictive and he had a warning for investors saying there's a bit too much excitement in the focus on rates right now In London I'm Hannah George Bloomberg daybreak Europe Well despite all that it does seem that British households are racing for expected interest rate increases from the Bank of England and they're less willing to make big purchases ahead of the crucial Christmas period According to latest survey by GF K UK consumer confidence fell in October to the lowest level since the country was stuck in lockdowns The main source of worry surging inflation food and fuel shortages along with climbing COVID-19 cases Well also just breaking earlier this morning UK retail sales fell unexpectedly for a 5th month as that consumer confidence slid that adds to evidence that the economic recovery is losing momentum so the volume of goods sold in stores and online fell two tenths of 1% last month economists had expected an increase of 6 tenths of 1% So it's the longest period of consecutive monthly declines on record and it came despite panic buying of fuel during a supply crisis Well let's move to the UK where the fed is imposing new rules on personal investing for officials at the Central Bank The move follows trading disclosures that led to the resignations of Dallas fed president Robert Kaplan in Boston's Eric Rosen green Here's more with Bloomberg Steve Matthews They're prohibited from purchasing individual stocks from holding individual bonds from holding derivatives The rules require even for the securities they do hold they require that they have 45 days advanced notice for purchasing our sale of securities They have to get approval for purchasing "Me. Ohio republican senator rob portman because he has a pretty generally modern record and he's retired so no real political cost anyway. well what. What are your thoughts on this. The cr yeah. I probably would have voted with Senate leader mcconnell I probably typically would right around and look. I think this was a this was a republican win in that they got essentially the clean bill. They want it right That there's an extension They avoided the the argument that they've somehow shut down the government But at the same time they're keeping everybody's feet to the fire by by setting a by making only run through december so Look this is what mcconnell wanted. And i i often lament Republicans were the casey stangl. Can't anyone here play this game But mitch mcconnell played the game. He played it well. And i you know kudos to. I don't i don't think he you know you. And i when we talked to a couple of weeks ago. Neither one of us leave that we would reach this. You know shutdown type thing was it was brinksmanship and someone would Would do something eventually at and they did so. Yeah i'm i'm in the same position i've completely unsurprised about that. Cr are just a basically a matter of course at this point and so yeah. I think it was pretty unsurprising. I actually think this was the way it should have gone. I was not. I was not crazy about tying the cr to the debt ceiling in any case i think there are two separate things and so i'm perfectly fine with with how this happened and speaking and i should've i should've yeah. I should have made that clear what i was talking about. I said clean bill. That's what the democrats had wanted was votes were drawn on both at the same time and republicans are are very much opposed to giving democrats a free pass on the that ceiling absolutely and speaking of the debt ceiling noth-. Nothing much has changed really with that though this week. Treasury secretary janet yellen said that even with the extraordinary measures the department is taking the debt ceiling will be reached by october eighteenth. But she also said you know that it's only an estimate and that this uncertainty underscores the critical importance of not waiting to raise or suspend the debt limit and yellen also. This week voiced support for legislation introduced in. May that would repeal the debt ceiling entirely. She noted that as congress makes these decisions approves these decisions on taxes and spending. It should also provide the ability to essentially honor those prior obligations. And i wanted to get your take on that. I mean janet. Yellen nova lot about the economy as she's only in economist. Not only the treasury secretary but she's also a former chair of the federal reserve. And so what do you think about You know her ideas and yeah. Let's just repeal the debt ceiling entirely..

and it's a $91 stock So as we were talking about a 25 PE or so which is pretty expensive for a food company for a restaurant company But their sales growth in the most recent quarter was 89% or before that was 23 Before that it was shrinking for the four quarters So it's recovering and starting to pick up and that's very good That's probably why the stock has done pretty well My view is expensive then I'll play a dividend owner's management owned 6% of the company they don't have a lot of debt which is also good Companies ran very well They were trying to equities a little weak and not only a lot we could only return to 3% I like to be in the teens This is only 3% That would be my biggest problem I think that I will look at it I don't like your return on equity The stock price is high Call that. I showed up. My goal is to show up in full power and so on wednesday. I had six back to back to back to back to back. Calls and each of them were about an hour to an hour and a half long but i made the commitment to show up every single day in full power to every single call and it was the hardest thing i've ever done. Because like those guys that go live consistently no like when you go live. Just drains your energy like especially if you go live a lot in a day like it's exhausting but i'm so fucking disciplined that i showed up to every single coaching call single live in full power with this much energy for six hours straight. And that's what the fuck it takes. Because i'm going to be honest with you guys. The week voice inside of me wanted to cancel and wanted to like be like man over committed myself. Maybe i should just take a break. Maybe i should cancel some of these calls. So i can show up some of them in full power. But then there's this little fucking voice inside of me that's like yo be mark's show up like you said you were going to show up. You said you were going to do something and you need to start listening to that voice if you wanna be successful at guys if you wanna be a high performer. I'm gonna give you a secret to being a high performer ready. You need to know what your own bullshit. Straight up tune it out. I want you guys to imagine all of your excuses and reasons for why you're not where you wanna be as a frequency that you're tuned into right now. It's like a frequency right. It's like a frequency of like on too busy with school right now. I can't work on my business. Or i'm not good at tiktok. That's why i'm not getting on there. Because i don't know how to edit videos or closes in new app for me and i'm so confused and i'm outside of my comfort zone or i'm not video that's why i'm not getting a live streamer. I'm not good at social media. That's why i'm not post. I want you to imagine your bullshit excuses as this frequency that you're tuning into and your accepting as a reality right now right now magical these excuses as a frequency or tune into now understand that the real truth. I want you guys to write this down. If you're taking notes the real truth is always buried beneath bullshit. The real truth is always buried beneath the bullshit and the real truth on finnish coach. You fucking note. You know like we know when we're not performing at the level that we want to. The Wall looked a certain way. And then the other from the other side that looked a lot different tell us about the actual wall standing there especially on the Mexican side looking at it. What's it like where the wall is a big piece of iron mongering That looks like it looks like a prison wall. I mean it looks ah fence it has slats in it. The first one that I saw was in Nogales may be eight years ago or possibly more and it wasn't a wall that you could see through. It was sexually big iron plates steel plates. I guess and there were there. Were Rusty thirty feet high. You couldn't see through. It looked like it didn't look like offense at all actually looked like a wall That's now slats. What is it looked like it? It looks like something that is surmountable. Looks like you could climb over and people do it. Looks like could tunnel under it and people do it also looks very beautiful. It looks like a piece of sculpture by the artist Christo it looks like Krista went to the border and said I'm going to show the world. What a border looks like in metal and so the the fence to steal border fence goes up and down through hill and Dale undulating up? As far as the I can see and you think how amazing but how primitive too because house obviously keep any vote. No when I go as a traveler to these walls the odd thing is I can pass them easily. I can go from Israel to Palestine I in the cold where I could go between East and West. You were south of the wall and you wrote about the women in the diners there that kind of saw you you as a maybe a ticket to the north. It must have been interesting for you to be in these hardscrabble. Little spots in the wall was so close and you could just waltz right back and forth. They couldn't not only that it's only yeah waltzing bank in Nogales Arizona. You visit door in the wall. The first time I saw it there was a turnstile where you're in a street in Arizona. You know with parked in the sunshine. POKKA walk down the end of the street. Go through the door in your in Mexico is your show you I mean I showed by. Id and just by walking through a door. That for travel is such an amazing experience to me. It was an experience of the kind that I'd I'd never had before I've cross borders. You've been through many borders but most borders that are memorable you walk across Kenya Ethiopia China China and Russia Kazakhstan Benetton wherever you know Canada and say but Mexico is it's the wall and also there's another language behind the wall is cuisine beyond the wall and the women that you mentioned some of whom want to go over the wall around it to work in a motel or a hotel in the states Have left children behind husband's behind and the going what I found.
