"Promised I'd do this today. First thing ran out of time yesterday. This is about how many people out there. Show of hands. How many people out there with your winter gear? Have a jacket from The North face. That's the name of the company pretty popular in Colorado. They're famous for their puffy jackets, right? Here's another exercise in woke virtue, signaling So the folks at the North face Decided they'd make a statement on the issue of climate change. And with this yet another tiresome, active, vain virtue, signaling the North face snubbed one of its existing corporate customers, refusing for the first time to produce jackets. That had the logo of this company. It was AH West Texas company in the business of petroleum production. And this is the statement that the North face was making because it wanted to jump on the global warming climate change bandwagon, so they refused to make jackets for this West Texas company with the logo on the jacket. His company in the business of petroleum production. Here's the irony. What do you suppose North face jackets are made of? Exactly right. They're made of petroleum, which by the way, two thirds of all clothing sold today. Is made from petroleum products that the geniuses in management at the North face company are now effectively boycotting one of their own suppliers. Really, really brilliant. So Regarding the whole debate over climate change and energy policy. Listen. We're not going to get rid of petroleum anytime soon. I wind and solar are fine, although a to current its current period solar and wind combined Constitute less than 10% of electricity production and solar less than 2% and these air emerging technologies. As the technology improves, the cost is getting lower. And over time..

"You're not related to Ian Anderson. By any chance, Are you? Someone call you? Yeah. My middle brothers and different and Anderson that the jester asshole, But what does he do? He's an artist. Oh, really? Is it a starving artist? Or is he is he doing okay? What he's doing, Okay, but maybe close, he's doing fine. He's got a rich, but he's a painter. An artist still here in Houston, you know, like like Leonardo DaVinci in and the light. You just always had to have a patron that would, you know, write two checks, and then you get to be the artist. Until you know we're gonna kick out. I thought you played, Jethro told coming out of the break. Tell me about calling the North face. Yes. So we wanted to every year we do. A Christmas present for our employees in this year's as you can imagine, but difficult time, folks in the oil field. Um and the team has pulled together really well, so we're gonna do something a little bit. Nice toe. Get back to folks, so we We're gonna do north. Nice North face jackets with Innovex logo's on them and distribute them out all of our customers, So we reached out to it in fairness distributor to North face, Dude, who makes you the past has made these jackets for us and asked them if we could buy 100 North face jackets with Innovex logo's on them for how much would that cost? That's for about 40,000 bucks. Okay? Was that the budget or the budget was kind of depending on what you got. Uh yeah, party depending on what we got about that get them to do the stitching. Or you have somebody here that does that for you. We have somebody here that does that person here that doesn't actually have to call out to to the North face to get approval. They've asked that we not They don't want to get in trouble with the North face and they've asked that we not Another night. Okay. All right, so go ahead. Yes. So we re stuck to this distributor. He contacted the North face and they contacted back and said, Hey, Unfortunately, they would not be willing or able to make that large of an order with the Innovex logo on it because we did not conform their brand standards. And they told him what that meant was that we're in oil and gas company and they didn't work in which were normal service company but shut the distinction aside. They didn't want to be co branded with a business in the oil and gas industry. And how did how was that news received? S so I think we were all shocked. I was aware a couple other outdoor manufacturers had this this view. I didn't realize that North face did but first, Yeah, number of us as we talked about this were shocked by their decision, and I think first and foremost, the obvious irony is Jackets were looking to buy our maid, predominately from hydrocarbons. As are almost all the products that North face makes. And you felt like that was hypocritical. Hey, I think the word I used was virtue, signaling, I think if it gets to this, uh Point where people try toe. Make a point about where their their virtue is, even if they're actually behaving in a slightly Different way. Did anybody a wife a customer and employee and investor, go? Why are you talking about this publicly? We don't wanna be boycotted. Yeah. Right? It might be my wife are Did anybody tell you, you know? Lay off? You know you're you're in the news. This is not good. Yeah, I think that, certainly. Uh um In the sentiment. That was my wife's initial reaction is this is interesting. And she knows that this is I'm very passionate about this topic but would probably prefer that I not speak so publicly about him. But I think my view increasingly, is I I'm a Diehard fifth generation oiling and gas person. What we do is In the willing gas industry is critical for humanity for the prosperity and flourishing of humanity. And not only should we, you know, we should celebrate that not apologize for it, and I guess I feel like over the last throughout my career, I've seen a change in tone in the industry. And with folks outside the industry that oil and gas is a necessary evil, and I just don't see it that way at all. And I thought that this was This'll, um, view by north base was just quintessential example of how how were you, probably by the rest of the world that candidly when I wrote the letter and published I didn't think anyone would actually read it. I thought it might get somebody thought of mine. You know, so I employees would feel feel bad and have to read it. But I didn't didn't expect them to get nearly in front of attention at the did. Where did you publish it? I'll make them also emailed or email. I sent the physical copy to the to the North face a parent company as well, but link them is what I posted it to did they respond. Not directly. They made. They put a post up on their Facebook page after they got A number of, uh, derogatory comments on their Facebook page about their stance. They they put in a kind of generic response, saying they've effectively reserve the right not to sell to folks that they have. Don't want to be partnered with Yeah. So you saw this as an opportunity to take a stand on an issue that's been important to you for some time. Yes, exactly right. Why do you think it is that this industry is maligned to the extent that it is? Well, I think people don't understand. I probably a couple different reasons. I think on the one.

Growing a String-of-Pearls Plant

"We're going to talk about a very hot house plant. There are trends in house plants. Last year was monster. It's probably still monster but one plant. That's super popular right now and i'm going to try really hard to pronounce this correctly but whatever i do i'm going to do it with conviction it's curio rally anise used to be called scenario rally ennis. And it's known as string of pearls or bead plant and this is in every magazine photo of an indoor garden. Everybody's crazy about this plant right now. Are you crazy about this plant sale. Well it it's funny. Because i recently did buy one i few years ago had a big rain chain out in my porch and i planted all of the cups in the rain. Chain with succulents. That's fantastic. I love the and and the top one i planted with this curio. The string of pearls so that they dangled down and over the edges. But it's funny that now it's kind of hard plant to find. I know at my garden center. They have a hard time finding growers. Who are growing this plant. So i just want to caution people because it suddenly you know what used to be a grandma plant that your grandmother had in her window and every time she wanted to give you some. You're older you're is right now. It is a hothouse plant. That people want partly. Because i mean that's pretty unusual to have a plant that instead of foliage has little green round beads. Right it's it's a cool looking plant. I'll give you that. It's a cool. It's a cool looking plant. It's also an easy plant for people who tend to not water. Their plants often enough and in fact the way that you can go wrong with this plant is by giving it too much water but as with most succulents you also need to have adequate light so waterboarding it in a room with no windows is not gonna be good for this plant. Either you need to have it in a window and probably not a north facing. It'll it'll survive in north facing window. But you'll notice longer pieces of stem between the little green balls and it won't be quite as luscious looking as it was when you bought it at the garden center. It's funny because you almost always see these in hanging pots. The cascade down or up on a pedestal so that they can cascade down so i thought to myself. How does this plant grow in nature right you. Can you can picture some of the Epa films all living in trees. And i thought is is a plant that lives in trees but it turns out. No it is not. This is a plant that is native to africa where it grows is a ground cover and this gives you a clue if you cannot find this plant somewhere but you have a friend who has it. Think about how it grows in nature. I know we say that all the time but it's a really good thing to do that. Plant the stems grow along the ground and where it makes contact with the ground it sends out roots and that indicates or should indicate to you that it will not be difficult to route a cutting of this plant. So if you want it and you can't find it and you have a generous friend. Maybe they'll give you a piece. I have never seen one actually bloom indoors. I'm sure that it could if you had a really bright window or greenhouse. But i have to say those flowers are so cool looking and this is also really weird. I know they kind of remind me of the corona virus because there they're white and they're round and they have these read statements that stick out all around the flower. So if you google it like the flower of string of pearls. You're going to see one of those things that looks like a depiction of the corona virus. But don't let that stop you from growing this plant please

Supreme Sells to VF Corp. Will it Sell Out?

"It's an entrepreneur's classic dilemma. Can we keep the culture that makes us unique and made a successful and still sell our company. Nowhere is this dilemma more stark. Then with underground street where companies supreme which recently announced that it selling to fashion conglomerate. Vhf corp you know. Vf the ten billion dollar company that owns nineteen brands including north face vans and timberland well in case she were doomed scrolling in miss the big news last week. Vf announced its deal to acquire supreme. For a couple billion dollars it's bs big acquisitions since it bought timberland and twenty eleven also for just over two billion dollars bloomberg reported. Now you've probably heard of supreme but just in case it's a streetwear company. It sells branded. T shirts hoodies hats and their fashion. Ain't cheap. The label launched with a single skateboard shop. In new york city in nineteen ninety-four the brainchild fashion designer. James jeb jeb. Lia will remain at the helm of the brand supreme at big by doing everything. Mass market brands don't do it. Amplified scarcity in a big way. Supreme spent almost nothing on marketing building. Up word of mouth instead. According to cnbc it opened brick and mortar stores. So slowly that. Today there are only twelve around the world and you couldn't just walk in to make a purchase. No the only way to get supreme. Fashion was to follow them on social media like a hawk waiting for them to announce random drops of merchandise. Today those drops our weekly getting a spot in line for the privilege of buying anything was intentionally almost impossible at the height of their popularity. Wannabe customers would camp out in tents or sleep on the street to get a spot in line. The next morning teens also commonly spent a couple of hundred dollars to purchase online bots that notified in the second clothing dropped but that notification guaranteed nothing products could be sold out in less than a minute that strategy in turn created hot resale market t shirts and hoodies that originally so for sixty to eighty dollars could fetch up to a thousand bucks on ebay and other resale sites. The supreme red and white brand became so magnetic that the company seemingly could sell just about anything by slapping the logo on it from kayaks to a pyrex measuring cup to a brick literally. You can still buy a supreme branded brick resale sites stock x. It'll set you back. One hundred and thirty dollars though according to cnbc and just for fun and unbranded brick currently cost sixty six cents. At lowe's the company also pursued its famous collapse strategy. Working in tandem with the f. Corpse vans timberland. North face to create supreme branded footwear and apparel partners included designers like gucci and louis vuitton even colgate toothpaste has a partnership with supreme for vf. The deal signals a strategic. Step forward in what it is called a transformation plan in recent years. Bef has begun. Divesting less edgy products. Like work. where it's off wrangler into its own company and is building on its prowess in athletic streetwear. Its stock price surged on the supreme announcement. Its biggest gain in more than thirty years according to bloomberg. But here's the really big question. Can supreme keep expanding by making its products. Hard to get under the umbrella of a fortune five hundred company with its eye on global growth. Bfce's the street where market is a fifty billion dollar opportunity. Supreme reportedly earned half a billion in revenues last year the f. plans to add new supreme stores around the world. The new york times asked kent supreme. Stay cool while going corporate seemingly. The answer is yes. After all one of the country's biggest private equity firms the carlyle group bought about half of supreme for five hundred million dollars in two thousand seventeen that deal prompted the same kinds of questions about authenticity but supreme continued to grow. Not everyone sees a smooth path forward. However matt powell is a senior industry advisory at retail consultancy npd group. He told the website high snow by the streetwear market is based on scarcity scarcity and growth are oppositional. Oh and one other challenge ahead for vs. It'll continue to allow supreme to do its famous collapse with partners outside the f- like for instance the f. rivals levi's and nike from the outside. That looks like letting your new spouse still collab- with other partners does it. Not and of course we all know how well that can work out in the end. Success will rest on whether the acquisition will juice revenues and profits for both partners. The f. is confident that supreme can become a billion dollar brand. If that is supreme can hang onto the cool rebellious image it's cultivated since his unassuming launch or than twenty five years ago

Columbia Sportswear's Gert Boyle Faced Down Sexism and Ageism

"Boyle. Grew. Columbia sportswear into a downfield powerhouse is the third Nar five-part series on the origin stories of iconic companies. We originally aired this episode about boils legacy after she died last. November, let's listen back. She was one tough mother and proud of it. Gert Boyle, the ninety five year old Chairman of Columbia Sportswear died earlier this month since then accolades poured in for boil, she was a formidable funny icon of the outdoor apparel world notorious for her resilience and her toughness qualities that empowered her to guide Columbia from near bankruptcy in the early seventies to what the New York. Times. Now calls the largest outerwear brand in the United States, a three billion dollar business. Gert Boyle was born gertrude lamb from in Germany in one, thousand, nine, hundred, twenty, four, when she was thirteen, the family fled Nazi Germany moving to Portland Oregon there her father lamb from bought the Rosenfeld hat company worried about antisemitism. He changed the name to the Columbia hat company. Columbia evolved from hats to outdoor year including a fishing vest that Gert than a homemaker raising three kids designed. Gertz husband Neil Boyle eventually became CEO of the family business. But in nineteen seventy, the forty seven year, old leader suffered a fatal heart attack. Suddenly Gert found herself at the helm of an eight. Hundred Thousand Dollar Company. She had no idea how Neil had run it nor how she and her son twenty, one year old, Timothy would manage. As CEO of Columbia Gert frequently encountered sexism, but she always had an acerbic comeback as the new. York Times reported Gert recalled that a businessman upon learning. She was the president exclaimed, but you're a woman her answer. You know I noticed that when I got up this morning. Still, the combination of rampant sexism in her inexperience almost killed the company by Nineteen seventy-one. Gert. Agreed to entertain an offer to purchase it. But when the buyer a man offered, only fourteen hundred dollars she custom out and slammed the door in his face wrote Doug Schnitt span who profiled her for outside magazine. Gert said for fourteen hundred dollars. I would just as soon run this business into the ground myself that encounter galvanized Gruden Tim with a combination of unconventional strategies including being the first to use the waterproof fabric. GORTEX. They saved Colombia and set it on its growth path while all of their outdoor industry rivals including the north face in Patagonia. Marketed their wares to elite climbers and adventurers girding in Tim, we're happy to sell their products. Products at department stores at lower prices that strategy shocked the young industry and it worked so too did the Marketing Campaign Gert? Boyle is best known for the one that featured her as just what she was. One tough mother that campaign which ran from nineteen, eighty, four to two, thousand, five depicted gert down to earth mob oil. Now, take no nonsense mother who didn't suffer fools gladly, and who would allow nothing less than perfection A. A string of TV ads showed Gert using her son Tim as a product Tester to prove that they're outerwear was both warm and waterproof. In the first. She had tim dressed in Columbia's famous three layer system. Walk through a car wash. Her favorite one was one in which she drove a Zamboni on a hockey rink. Right over her long suffering son dressed in Columbia gear. Of course, he was lying the ice breathing through a straw. Straw apprentice out of the same era for the boundary peak parker quoted the Middle Aged Gert, saying I've got hot flashes to keep me warm. You'll need something that zips mob boils tough. Mother ads are credited with transforming a little known business into a household name inside the company. Her wit was also on display. She summed up her guidance for other leaders. This way early to bed early to rise work like hell and advertise. She might have added and work like hell. Until the day you die, she made it to the office on her ninety fifth birthday in March and was still having business discussions shortly before her death on November third according to outsides Schmidt's Pon. Gert Boyle will be remembered for many things among them, her belief which she shared often with younger women that a woman could do anything and also her conviction that older workers are assets in the workplace. Indeed, in her nineties, she wrote perhaps my presence in the office offers a message that managers liked to put older workers out to pasture. Out. To lunch.

Looting and fires continue in downtown Seattle as protests turn violent

"Nick tell us where you are and what you can see well it since about three this afternoon we've been here in the west like pause over near Westlake park and behind us you can see still demonstrators that have been we're essentially the epicenter of this entire day going to began with all this frustration at being pent up against law enforcement over at fifth and behind those car fires obviously been put out but Kane county sheriffs and tactical gear made their way through the area just I'd say about ten minutes ago but right now it seems that a lot of people just been standing around and have just been continuing to demonstrate despite many people moving on to different locations all we've seen a couple different businesses being broken into the doc martens on fourth Avenue we saw people running in there about five or six people but aside from that and the gap store over at the corner of fifth and pine demonstrators continue to just stand down and protest and show their frustration over what's happened with what happened in Minneapolis and several other different locations obviously a lot of frustration continues to grow and people continuing to want to demonstrate that whether it's on TV or whether it's here on the streets of Seattle on but either way and this is been the scene that we've been seeing for I'd say the last ten fifteen minutes with only a couple walking away you could see people walking away with a mannequin pieces of mannequins and also came from stores it's it's it's been quite a scene in the last twenty to thirty minutes you're located at Westlake center that's where the rally he organized a rally was held it was supposed to be peaceful there are pastors people speaking on the stage so from where you are right now from the vantage point where you are at any sort of organized assembly it's over now correct yeah there there is no organized assembly that that ship sailed a while ago in this area they have that organized protests that happened from at Westlake park but as soon as that March when all they had made their way away from this area and I was to ride out where that fire had taken place spent lining up all right up against those demonstrators who are still here over at fifteen point Nick thank you very much I'm gonna ask your camera man if I can to zoom in back over to the right Justin this down being saying we just saw moments ago a group of people walking through downtown Seattle with legs and arms of mannequins that they've stolen from looting in the store there's an obscene gesture Fauria but really an astounding and just incredibly sad thing to see that is happening in downtown Seattle tonight you mentioned the doc martens store looted the north face store looted the Old Navy store was looted earlier tonight the poly clinic set on fire police vehicles burned and it we've talked most of the night about these two separate groups there was the peaceful protest the peaceful demonstration speeches made our prayers prayed that's all said and done what's happening now from here on out the people that are downtown now or are there I'm guessing for reasons of raging of violence of looting and pillaging the downtown core of Seattle and this is going to be interesting to see if and when the National Guard gets here how they're going to put a stop to that the mayor said the National Guard should be in place sometime tonight and this is an unarmed National Guard coming in possibly if necessary to protect citizens it's also interesting to note that earlier when protesters and demonstrators and riders were marching towards the police precinct there was a line of police officers protecting that building just an hour ago mayor Jenny Durkan addressing the city she said quote we will take all steps necessary to protect residents and property in the city but Eric as you mentioned we have seen live images of people actively looting vandalizing stealing from the downtown shopping corridor and this live look right here right now so bold maybe this is where Nordstrom is near right near Pacific place a couple blocks away from pike place market we have yet to see police activity protecting the stores or standing guard to protect the property in the downtown area on those police are stretched so thin because these groups have splintered off into several different areas and of course they have they have set up a line around police headquarters are trying to protect that they are trying to protect the stores and and the citizens but they are stretched so thin at this point but it's almost impossible without some more help and again I'm worried about when darkness comes here in another hour hour and a half what's going to happen under the cover of darkness as as this chaos continues in downtown Seattle again the speeches have been spoken in the prayers have been prayed in the protests have been protested now this is ugliness in our city this is sheer chaotic ugliness and we can only hope that order is restored just as soon as

Xiujing deputy leader of the Assault Party Chong Chunyan and Wong Fu who took part in the first ascent of Mount Everest via the north face but only ten people took part in the final assault since three people were dealing with altitude sickness on the morning of May second. They reached the summit not long after they made it to the top. They began their descent back to the final assault camp over the next several decades. More people attempted to summit the mountain. The next ascent of Shisha Pong did not happen until nineteen eighty when the mountain was open to foreign teams the first winter ascent of the peak took place in two thousand and five otherwise hundreds of people have made it to the main summit of Shisha PA as of twenty eighteen thirty one people have died on Shisha Palmer. Some of those deaths were caused by avalanches falls altitude sickness and fluid accumulation in the lungs caused by sending to high altitudes

"Is delivered night twenty sixteen and at the parking lot in Ventura California rose macario steps out of her car and into the warm mid morning sun the Patagonia. Ceo rubs her bloodshot eyes. She barely slept last night. And that's because her nightmare just came true. Donald J trump has won the election. Trump ranks high Makarios black book. He stands for everything. Patagonia opposes oil drilling coal mining. Climate Change denial but her horror at the election. Results has now solidified into resolve just before heading in. She emailed the entire company and urge them to find ways to help. Patagonia's fans Organiz against the trump administration's environmental agenda as she walks across the line von Cunard emerges from the same tin shed where his billion dollar business empire began. The sheds long outlived its usefulness to the company but you could still use it when the urge to do some blacksmith things strikes. He had straight for macario with a determined. Look on his face. Rose I read your email and I agree with every word. We must push even harder now. We must be ready to fight for what we believe in Makarios smiles. That's exactly what she wanted to hear. And it's just as well because it won't be long before Patagonia and traube cross swords. It's April twenty seventeen and Makarios Patagonia's office watching president trump deliver live address from the White House. Today I'm signing a new executive order to end another agreed abusive federal power and to give that power back to the states and to the people where it belongs in December of last year alone the federal government asserted power over one point three five million acres of land in Utah known as bears ears. I've heard a lot about ears and I hear it's beautiful. Macario tenses at the mention of bears ears. Patagonia funds the activists who helped turn this part of southern Utah into a national monument. Now trump wants to put these federally protected Red Rock Canyons. Back in the hands of Utah politicians and that sparking fears that the land will soon be opened up to developers and mining. It's a direct strike against a cause close to Patagonia's heart. Marco knows the fight to stop trump. Going ahead with this plan is on. She needs to call in some powerful allies. Macario grabs her phone and calls. Vice President are are. Are you seeing trump's announcement on bears ears? Yeah we need to do something. The whole outdoor industry needs to together. We can make a difference. I'll get our social media team to spread the word and encourage people to lobby against the change. Fantastic will do the same on our end. We should call around the rest of the industry to build a coalition by the day's end Patagonia. The North face and other outdoor companies are ready for battle. They may be business rivals but in this fight their allies united to protect the kind of outdoor spaces that are their lifeblood but their words fall on deaf ears. It's December twenty seventeen and in Ventura employees are crammed into Patagonia's conference room on TV. President trump is in full flow speaking live from the Utah State capital in Salt Lake City. I will sign two presidential proclamations. These actions will modify the National Monument says it nations of both bears ears and grand staircase Escalante the teen reels. As trump announces that the federal government will hand eighty five percent of bears ears back to the State of Utah Months of campaigning by Patagonia. The North face and their customers have failed to save the National Monument but Makarios ready for this. She turns to her team. Looks like we're going to war. You all know what to do. A minute later. Patagonia's website gets a new homepage. Five stark white words on a black background. The president stole your land by then Makarios on the phone to the Washington. Dc Law Firm. Patagonia put on standby filed a lawsuit as the Lawyers Spring Action Patagonia's publicists spread the word. That Patagonia is now suing. The Federal Government for scaling-down bears years by late morning Patagonia founder. Yvon Cunard is on CNN. We're losing this planet and we have an evil government and not just the federal government but Wacko POLITICIANS OUT OF UTAH places. I mean it's the north face also acts. It blasts the move as the largest elimination of protected areas in US history and donates. One hundred thousand dollars towards an Education Center in bears ears but the trump administration isn't backing down Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke hits back on Fox News so Patagonia made in China. These these companies are out there. Shameless lies they should focus on how to bring manufacturing back to this country rather than line the public about about losing federal land but while Patagonia spars with the White House in waits for its day in court. The North face launches a new marketing campaign. That seems like a clear dig at trump's promise to build a wall along the US Mexico border since nineteen sixty six viewed walls not as obstacles opportunities. We were searching for a personal kind of freedom in this pursuit found a community this community shyness that the only way forward is together. We believe in a world is united by difference bound by empathy and strengthened by understanding. Walser meant for climbing yet. Despite its present day political undertones. It's a campaign that could have come from north face or Patagonia at any point during the last fifty years for awhile. Most companies run scared from politics. Patagonia and the north face have long been nailing their colors to the mast. It's not without risks by making a stand. They inevitably alienate some customers even as they win the loyalty of others but there are sound business reasons to do it. In two thousand eighteen. A major survey by Public Relations Firm Edelman found fifty seven percent of Americans say their beliefs. Now drive their decisions about which brands to spend their money on and that number is growing not just in the US but worldwide so now more than ever what values accompany stands for matters to the bottom line and that's good for Patagonia the north face. Because they've done more than just make money they've sought to change the world to since one thousand nine hundred eighty five. Patagonia's made cash and in kind donations worth eighty nine million dollars to hundreds of grassroots environmental groups. The North Faces Explore Fund spends half a million dollars a year supporting projects that help people access the outdoors and the conservation. Alliance Co founded by the two brands in one thousand nine hundred eighty nine has given more than twenty million dollars to North American conservation groups. The origins of the North Face Patagonia politics were there from the moment. They started as a hobby. Jobs of two dirtbag pals since then. The two companies have reached heights. Neither founder could have imagined on the way they've survived near fatal falls defied convention and inspired millions to head outdoors today. They boast combined annual revenues of more than four billion dollars Patagonia. The North base of both come a long long way but even now so many years and billions later these two companies are still kindred spirits to competitive dirtbag brothers looking for the next peak.

But there are business upsides to the common threads program further underlines Patagonia's status as a responsible company and wins it even more loyal customers by two thousand nine Patagonia is growing steadily. "Its may two thousand. In an army from the east is swarming through the red corridors of the north basis in San Leandro California. "On the last episode Patagonia was hit by the recession while bankruptcy loomed over the north face after it over expanded now. They're both licking their wounds in setting out on divergent paths. Patagonia stopped chasing growth and put planet before profit. The North face is now on the Nasdaq and pushing to become a billion dollar brand but it's lower price tech wear line. In new summit shops are failing to deliver the sky. High growth companies told investors to expect. And now the north face is about to resort to subterfuge to cover its mistakes in order to maintain its assent this is episode five rescue mission. Its December nineteen ninety. Seven and in an inconspicuous office in Connecticut. The North faces thirty nine year old finance chief. Christopher Crawford is out to salvage bad quarter. He sitting down with a rep from a barter company. Bader companies are corporate swap shops places where businesses can offload. Merck's didn't sell in exchange for other services or goods. Crawford's hoping this company will make his Christmas by relieving the North Face of the excess inventory. Clogging up its warehouses. The unsold surplus spans the company's entire range from Mango Colored Mountain Light Jackets and Black. Willie hats to Merlo Hugh Tundra pile vests and hot shot day packs these unwanted items are more than a storage cost. They're also money locked up in fabric money. The North face can't reclaim until the garment is sold. The REP taps and figures into the spreadsheet on his PC interns to Crawford. Okay Mr Crawford will accept the inventory at the full wholesale price Crawford fields relief flooding his body with this deal. The North face will get paid. It's full profit margin on its unsold gear. But there's a catch and that catch is that this will not be a cash deal the coordinator glances at his spreadsheet again. So that's seven point. Eight million dollars in trade credits. The North based can redeem those credits for goods and services offered by other companies in our network. We've got advertising agencies. We've got printers Crawford cuts in. Actually I I've got a condition. I need a veto on who you sell. The inventory to the north face is a premium brand. We can't discount stores flooded with our product. That's not a problem. Get the contract draft over to you later this week Crawford leaves in an upbeat mood. He's just offloaded. The North faces unsold gear and more importantly made a sale that will show up the company's soggy fourth quarter sales or so. He thinks a few days later at the north basis headquarters in San Leandro California. The barter company faxes over the contract. There's just one thing Crawford needs to check Crawford. Picks up his desk phone calls the north faces onto. Hey It's Christopher I'm about to sign off on a barter deal. They're buying our excess inventory for the full wholesale price and they're paying in trade credits. How do I list Prophet in our accounts in short you? Don't you can't count. Trade credits is dollars earned. Doing so violates generally accepted Accounting Principles Gab. Crawford's eyes widen the north face. Needs this deal on the books. If the millions from the barter trade aren't in the figures investors might run scared in the company. Stock Price could tumble after getting his shock and check. Crawford calls the bar companies representative to reopen negotiations. He knows all cash isn't going to fly so we offers the next best option need alter our agreement. I need the DEAL TO BE HALF CASH. Half trade credits. Oh well Mr Crawford. We're not going to pay cash when the North Bay skin veto who we sell the items to your tying our hands and making this deal too. Risky. Let's face it if you could sell the inventory through your normal channels. You wouldn't have come to us. Proffered purses his lips. Okay Okay how about this? The North face will guarantee that you will recover at least sixty percent of the price when you resell the product and if you will make up the difference by buying back the merchandise oh well that changes everything given that guarantee we'd be willing to bake it apart cash part credit deal over the next month. The North base ads the barter transaction to books it counts all the cash as Prophet. Even though under the terms of Crawford's guarantee to the barter company the North face could find itself buying back the year. Then the north face makes another sneaky. Move IT SPLITS. The trade credits across two quarters. Split into the amounts involved fall below the threshold that would force the auditor to strike the sale from the accounts and despite knowing the barter transactions are being counted in the figures the auditor deems the amount immaterial and signed it off the move delivers a five million dollar boost. The company's nineteen ninety-seven Results and another two point. Four million in nineteen ninety eight but the ruse won't go unnoticed.

"In our new series we follow the trail blazed by two of the biggest names in outdoor apparel the North face and Patagonia today. These giants have outdoor attire boasts combined revenues of nearly four billion dollars a year and their clothes are as common on city. Streets is mountain slopes but their story is about way. More than dollars earned. It's also the story of two companies with shared roots and their battle to stay true to the values that were founded on but when these two companies took their first steps in the nineteen sixties. Mountaineering was a niche hobby. No one imagined mountain where would become a fashion staple. The outdoor industry was run by people who just wanted to make enough scratch to fund their next expedition. This is episode one dirtbags. It's nine hundred sixty four and Doug Tompkins. Fumbles for change in a telephone booth in downtown San Francisco. He pops a dive into the slot dials. The North face seemed appropriate after Mount Temple. Good name but Tompkins once more than ours approval. He needs products for the north face to sell and for that. He needs Shuna hard. You see shipyards not just a climber. He's also blacksmith back. In nineteen fifty seven he bought a secondhand hammer anvil and ever since he's been making and selling climbing batons piton of the pegs climbers hammer into rock faces to support their ascents most batons are made from soft iron. Which means they break. If pulled out of the rock but yards batons are different. He makes his from steel. And because their steel they're strong enough to reuse shards. Been selling them on a small scale but now Tompkins wants his new retail venture to stock them. So I wanted to ask you sell me your towns at a wholesale price so I can put them in our catalog sure sure. How many do you need? And I'm thinking maybe if we went to the operator. Your three minutes are up. Damn money's run out Yvonne. I'll mail your first order by. But Tompkins isn't the only one about to turn his love of climbing into a paycheck and that's because shards. Transforming his piton making sideline into a proper business. It's nineteen sixty five and in Ventura California craggy-faced landlord unlocks the padlock on a chain fence gate. And pulls it aside? He turned to avant Cunard and his climbing. Tom and beckons them inside an this way. The two climbers followed the landlord through the grounds of a now abandoned slaughterhouse. She naarden frost or here searching for a home for their new business. Shoe art equipment. Last fall they wowed tight-knit climbing world by making the first ascent of the near Vertical North American wall of El Capitan in Yosemite. And ever since there's been a rising tide of climbers mailing shoe with orders for his steel piton. So now she naarden frost out to tap into that demand by starting a business that designs makes and sells peons and other climbing hardware. They're not after riches they just want a few more dollars to fund their climbing trips. They also want to be based somewhere where they can lay down their tools and head to the beach. Whenever the SURF's up this sleepy beachside town is perfect. They both stopped through the premises after the landlord. She yards short muscular guy with a determined. Look on his face. Frost follows behind. He's being poll thin with a crew. Cut that accentuates years. The landlord leads them to the ramshackle building that used to be the Slaughterhouse Boiler Room. It's about the size of a small store and made out of car gated ten. Well boys here. It is like I told you. It ain't much but it's cheap step inside the ten shed. It's gloomy mid small. The roof probably leaks and the grounds uneven. And it's exactly what they're looking for a dirtbag home for a dirtbag company within weeks. She moved his blacksmith gear into the shed and Shenar. Equipment is in business. Not that shoe. Narc CONSIDERS HIMSELF AN ENTREPRENEUR. He sees himself as a craftsman and artisan who makes climbing equipment the traditional way with a hammer and an advil. It's like the industrial revolution. Never happened all the same she yards. Timing is spot on in the mid sixties climbing is still a niche hobby. But it's growing more and more people are looking to reconnect with nature by heading outdoors to hike and climb nowhere. Is that trend? More evident than in the San Francisco Bay area. And that's inspired shoe. Narves Buddy Doug Tompkins to move the North Bay from a mail order. Operation run from his kitchen table and into brick and mortar. It's October nineteen sixty. Six and in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood and opening party for the North Bay store is underway. The store might be new to this Bohemian corner of the city. But it fits right in with the radical bookstores beat poets and strip joints that define it in the north faces. Window is a huge poster of Bob Dylan at the door to hells angels. Stand glowering and sleeveless denim shirts inside a hot new local bands playing live. They call themselves the grateful dead as women in Flowing Gypsy style. Dresses and beaten guys enroll necked jumpers sway to the music. Doug Tompkins handout glasses of wine. He's having a great time even though no one's paying attention to this sleeping bags tents piton ropes on display. But he wouldn't have it any other way. Is he just like vonts yards climbing hardware business? Tompkins didn't start the north face to get rich for him. It's about embracing the outdoors lifestyle and for Tompkins. That lifestyle always comes first. It's spring nineteen sixty seven and in the north face store a customer's checking out the store sleeping bags while Tompkins watches the clock from behind the counter. Work days seem to last forever. Excuse me I'm going climbing in Castle Rock Colorado and I need a new bag. Which do you recommend? Tompkins looks at the customer with envy since opening the store. He spending more time helping others pick out climbing gear and scaling mountains himself. Well for maximum more if you WANNA go with the model two hundred if you want. Lightweight it's the model one hundred. Thanks I'll take the one hundred and it's going to be a great trip. We're thinking of doing the athlete's feet route you know the one Royal Robbins did North base founders zones out the customer Jabar's away. This isn't the way it was supposed to be. The store was supposed to subsidize a life of climbing instead. It's just become a job. Something's gotTa Change. And then he has an idea that makes us smile creep across his face. It's time to dump the north face a few weeks later. Tompkins sells his store to two brothers for fifty thousand dollars not bad for a one store business that struggling to break even the brothers open to more north face stores in the bay area only to find they can't cover the costs the demand. Just isn't there America's yet to discover its passion for outdoor sports a year later after losing sixty thousand dollars the companies up for sale again and in May nineteen sixty eight they find a buyer an ambitious Stanford. Mba named HAB clump. He pays sixty thousand dollars for the north face. This former high school quarterbacks got a plan a plan that will transform the North Base. From just another dirtbag outdoor store into the flag bearer of a new industry but while the north faces new owner is settling in the company's founders. Enjoying his return to dirtbag life. It's June nineteen sixty eight in. Tompkins is spending the Day with Dr Surfing on Ventura Beach. Tompkins squats down on the Board. Is Seawater sprays. His Tanto arrives the way to the shore which is board under his arm jobs across the warm golden sand to wear short sitting. She barely acknowledges his return. He's too engrossed in the book. He's reading Tompkins flops. Onto the beach towel next shenar rolls on his back and puts his hands behind his head to look up at the blue sky. What's your reading conquerors of the useless by Leeann l? Teret it tells the story of how he made the first ascent of Mount Fitzroy in Patagonia. Back at fifty two. He says it was his greatest and toughest climb. Fitzroy's only been climbed one time since then the mention of Patagonia brings a smile to Tompkins Lips. He went to that vast mysterious Argentine wilderness. A few years back Patagonia's amazing Yvonne. H- you'd love it. What a challenge. Fitzroy would be. That's a great idea. We could drive the whole way. Make it a real adventure surf in Mexico. Ski and chilly. Eat the local foods strength. The local spirits to we could also film it. Make a movie out of it. We'll need what six months? The smile on Girard's face Vanishes Doug. I got responsibilities now. A business to run. And you've got a kid to go quiet annoyed by realities intrusion on their daydreaming. But they're thinking the same thing screw business screw responsibility. Tompkins is the first one in the water. We're going to do this right. Yeah we are. They are adventurers dirtbags and responsibilities. Well they're just another obstacle to overcome by sunset. Their minds are made up. They're leaving for Patagonia and it's going to be the adventure of a lifetime and adventure that will transform them and in time the world.

Lands’ End Shares Jump on Earnings

"Going to start with what I think is the surprise of the day and that is lands end up twelve percent after third erred. Quarter profits came in higher than expected. Revenue was a little light same store sales for Lens and came in north of eight percent. That is strong growth. Yeah yeah some of that has to do with the fact that there were eighty nine lands end stores that closed right so those generally in fact I think in every case Someone will certainly correct me if I take one side of this issue the other in every case it was because of sears closing in lands end was was was an integral part of of of the sears experience. such as it was So certainly certainly the you know that that that helped the tick but you have to say looking looking at the revenue numbers. It doesn't look like an up double digits result. It really doesn't and I know that at least part of that is lands end raising guidance. For sure we're going into the holiday quarter. Maybe there's optimism there I don't know this is. This is one of those businesses. That is a little puzzling to me. Just because they appear to have the product right right the under armor. They've got good products. It's just the rest of the business. They're struggling with lands. End makes quality stuff. Yeah they just appear. I do struggle with Most other parts of retail. I don't think that you would look it lands and and maybe this is for better for worse you look at the you know the the nosedive dive that north faces on for example like landon isn't going after like being the hot brand They they are a steady as she goes brand. They are very credible. You know it's funny. I never noticed until I was actually doing the research did you ever notice that. The the APOSTROPHE for lands end is in the wrong place it's Land S.. Apostrophe the grammar scold in me is really angry that I never noticed. What does this so I looked it up and it turns out that when lands end was founded the first time they had made enough money to make a catalog? The printer put the apostrophe in the wrong place. And they didn't have enough money to fix it so this road with it and not only did they roll with it. They just embraced it so it is still. Land S. apostrophe and which despite the grammar scold in me you know. I will never UNSEE that. It's a really great brand. It's a great brand brand that they have the that they have taken pains to maintain and I think that helps absolutely helps. This is a company where the market cap is about four hundred fifty million dollars. Do you think I mean this really seems like because of the quality merchandise is because of the how solid the brand is it really seems like it would make for a good smart Tuck in acquisition for W- and I'm not saying for the next year or the next year and I wasn't you know wasn't going to say the neck you know for tapestry per se it's exactly who I was thinking about those types of businesses businesses that say you know what we've got a portfolio of brands and we're GONNA make this part of it sure a tapestry or a it would be a very smart acquisition. I you know lands ends and to me is a is a company that although you know as I'm as we're recording now is up seventeen percent despite that it's not something that really is going to surprise you that much and I'm not sure that the brand gives it permission to push into a bunch of different verticals. It is a the it is what we think it is and so I would think that this would be you know. Now that it's cleaned up a bunch of a bunch of its operations. Now that it's you know sears is sort of taking itself out of the equation. I would think that this would be a really good acquisition for for for a tapestry because it's a good cash flow of story. It's just not one where I expect. I would expect hyper growth without taking some risks to the brand

PBA DOT com slash B W daily in Uh from wonder I'm David Brown and this is business wars daily on this Wednesday September eleven. The Amazon is he's burning as we now know in late August aerial photographs showing Sao Paulo plunged into darkness in the middle of the day stunned the world that day turn night eclipse lips was a mystery at first but soon it became clear that the cause was some eighty thousand fires burning thousands of miles away in the Amazon rainforest the F. Corporation the multibillion dollar owner of Timberland vans shoes and the north face does not want any part of it late last month it announced that it will stop buying vying Brazilian leather. It won't start again the company said until quote we have the confidence and assurance that the materials used in our products do not contribute due to environmental harm in the country so what does footwear have to do with fires well. The fires on the edges of the Amazon are result of deforestation the station in drought loggers farmers and ranchers cut down trees often illegally they also set fires to clear vast swaths of ranchland mostly to fulfill the world's growing demand for beef. There are fires in the Amazon every year but the number of blazes this year is up about eighty percent over last year according to CNN the news outlet reports that the growth in the blazes is purposeful a result of pro beef industry policies promoted by Brazil's president gyroscope scenario Brazil is the world's largest exporter of beef Bolsonaro says he is not to blame the Amazon rainforest plays a huge role in mitigating climate change. The area is so enormous that unharmed it produces about twenty percent of the world's oxygen BEF Corp says it makes about five hundred million products a year making it one of the largest users of raw all materials in its industry in its effort to improve the company sustainability. VF Corp has been overhauling its supply chain by twenty twenty one. The company claims it will reduce the environmental impact of its raw materials by thirty five percent. Now one of those materials is leather Timberland. You know the Conic Yellow Boot Company is. VF's largest leather user leather is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. That's because of land-use changes like clearing parts parts of the rainforest. It's also do the copious amounts of methane made by the cattle themselves v F says fifteen percent of its greenhouse gas emissions come from leather weather. It's largest contributors cotton at more than forty percent given its public commitment to cleaning up the supply chain. It's response to the Amazon fires. This makes sense. One of Timberland's biggest rivals is doc Martin maker of the iconic Black boot. The British brand earned revenues news of about three hundred fifty million pounds last year up twenty percent from the year before the much smaller brand has made no public supply chain commitment similar to those of the F. Corp but like the F. It belongs to a consortium called the leather working group which sources materials from tanneries that attempt to reduce the environmental impact of leather processing icing on its own the corpse decision isn't likely to have much effect on Brazil's commitment to fighting fires in the Amazon but often where one company goes rose so go others and when they do together they have an impact so to do shoppers who as we pointed out here more and more lately are increasingly concerned about where their products come from and what effects they may be causing. Patagonia Gives $10m Tax Windfall to Eco Groups

"Business wars daily is brought to you by the podcast the growth show each week. They explore inspiring stories that get to the heart of how people grow a business an idea or movement. Stay tuned at the end of this episode here a little more about this fascinating new show. Brom wondering, I'm David Brown and this business wars daily on this Tuesday, December eleventh Patagonia knows how it spending the ten million dollars. It suddenly found in its pocket. This year. The outdoor clothing company is giving away the money to environmental advocacy groups. The move is a poke in the eye of the Trump administration. The windfall comes from the tax Bill passed earlier this year, which lowered the corporate tax rate that move left many companies flush with cash, but it was also a boon to the oil and gas companies and now Patagonia wants no part of it company. Founder Yvonne Shenar, call the tax cut irresponsible saying the government is ignoring the seriousness in causes of the climate crisis. In a company statement CEO rose macario argued the tax cut is threatening life-giving resources at the expense of our planet as for the money. She said our home planet needs it more than we do. Patagonia has long been known for its. Environmental activism, the company already gives one percent of its annual sales to environmental causes a year ago after the president reduced the size of two national monuments Patagonia blacked out its homepage and replaced it. With the senate's quote, the president stole your land. It's fans instantly rewarded the move by buying more fleas that week sales jumped seven percent, the outdoor clothing industry tries to brand itself as environmentally responsible. Value shared by many of its customers. So does Patagonia most direct competitor the north face though? It's advocacy is more subdued its owner recently announced a plan to reuse materials and try to make its business less. Wasteful Patagonia is privately held. And it's too soon to say whether customers are rewarding the company for its politically motivated gift, but CEO Mark Cario has said that when Patagonia takes his stand. It makes more money not less. Indeed, some research shows that for brands that has spouse values like Patagonia and the north face staying silent can hurt business, but for other kinds of companies the economic effect of social activism is less clear as more and more brands respond to societal issues. You can bet that this debate is occurring in boardrooms across the country, and that we might see more companies speaking up. Romm wondering this is business wars daily.
