Getting Ready for the 2020 Emmys

"The Television Academy has just unveiled the nominees for this year's edition of the Emmy Woods Nichols Fernando Augusta per checker and colossal rebelo went through the list and brought us the highlights. Let's have a listen. Pelada. Lovely to have you here. Let's talk about the AMI's but first of all, I mean, you have quite an experience with the amas right while I was very lucky last year while working out of our Los Angeles Bureau to attend the ceremony last for the seventy first. Edition of the Emmy Awards it is amazing. It really is a celebration of all things television not only of course, you're able to see the ceremony yourself and how it all unfolds that the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, you get to sit right next to some of your favorite stars as they celebrate you know a year worth of work you get to watch as some of them lose some of them when at last year was quite. Special because it was of course, the last year that game of thrones was nominated the end of the saga of game of thrones, which was, of course, a really big deal and one thing that I really liked about that was also how they marked the series that were coming to an end last year by bringing all the cast in the production team that was attending the ceremony on stage and kind of acknowledging any TV show that's on. Air for. A few years it is a bit sad one. You know the last time modern family was also the last. So it yeah, it is. It is quite an experience. I mean we are still a few months to go until this year's edition. Hopefully, we'll be able to have it in person by then by September the television academy still hasn't exactly unveiled the plans for that. But yeah, it just feels as much as it is A. Celebration of television it feels very different to watch it in person than on. TV. Sets and if he's going to be a special year because I mean we've been watching lots of television during lockdown effing and one of the things don't you grieve me. Colada that I like about the Emmys they are. You know what they are actually fairly diverse compared to the film awards and that just shows TV can be actually quite progressive away. Absolutely I think. The nominations this year as well. Reflects that diversity is well and yeah it does show how TV has been able to catch up with only momentum that has been happening in Hollywood about asking for change when it comes to diversity. But even if you look at the shows that are nominated or even just a shows that we're watching now they are reflection of different stories that are a reflection of different themes it's not as standard I would. Say, for example, with the Oscars and I think that's what makes it quite an interesting and exciting. Well, let's talk about some of the favorites I did like sheets Greek being nominated for comedy series of things surprise it started as a very little Canadian series but then apparently people saying that my win actually because the critics love it oh, it is a fantastic show I definitely has been one of the ones I've been watching this year and I was very happy to see it getting nominated for the outstanding Comedy Series Award another one on that category that it was really happy to see their it's the kaminsky methods. This is a Netflix show and yes, it is very lovely with Michael. Douglas starring in it and it is very funny as well and it was so nice to see you know it. They're in the category as well and I just I was very happy I. Think. As we were saying the nominations this year do justice to the TV. We've been watching I mean drama succession I know we're both big fans and you know Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong both be nominated for best actor in a drama series very well deserved extremely well deserved and it is, of course, we're talking here about a big categories. As if you go down the list, there are more awards being given to all the shows we've been mentioning. Not Awards, nominations I mean. But yes, I was very, very happy to see succession I think personally, it has been one of my favorite shows over the last few years I can't remember being dad excited about a show in succession was already nominated for Fiore's last year. I. Know that Nicholas Brutal do who composed the sound score for at won an emmy last year. For. For the score, he composed for succession that would be nice to see it how it's catching momentum and that fans quite disappointed that due to coronavirus sat filming restrictions. The third series did not come out this year as planned but this is a recognition of TV done very very well, there's been other recognitions for example, the morning show had quite a few nominations. And again, it was a show that it was not like loved the beginning by tics but I think people kind of were said, you know what actually was a good series especially the last episode of series. So another one I'm very happy also have very significant for apple as well as the morning show was you know the show that apple try to use as? To make its mark as someone that could compete with the network giants and streaming giants as well. So not only is a very good sign for the a seeing Jennifer Aniston Steve Carell nominated but also to see apple when they've been investing into the right series hiring great actors, great writers, Great Producers, and that it actually pays off and Collado. So what if Jimmy Kimmel? This time I mean, as you rightly said, we don't know how ceremony is going to be, but you know what bt awards they did try and they did like a special ceremony. Names might have to do that because it's happening on the twentieth September. That's very the as the television academy has said that the creative emmys, which you know the creative emmy is usually happen a few days before the Primetime Emmys and they've already said that those are happening on an online platform a few days before didn't haven't clarified yet for the AMI's themselves. We still don't know exactly what are the plans now? What is interesting about Jimmy, Kimmel here hosting I think it's his third time hosting is that he is nominated as well. His show Jimmy came alive is on the outstanding variety talk series, and there's always very endearing one. You know one of the host sometimes even people introducing the award end up being nominated. So yeah, I'd be curious to see exactly how that's going to pay out I don't know. was there any surprise nomination here on this list for you? Fernando as F- in the morning show was A bit of a surprise for me and also in the drama category I mean, we saw men hurriedly having quite a lot of nominations itself Jeremy Pope for his role in Hollywood for a best actor on limited series or movie because Lotte I think competition program should go again to Rupo's drag race. Oh Yeah. His love rapport figured they will he would win again just shows how you know when Ru Paul's drag race started. It was a very Niche not known at the public, and now they've been doing this for over a decade now, and there's just shows how you know there is an appetite for a show like that that it is mainstream, there's no way you can't say that anymore and is so empowering it is, of course, one of my personal favorites as well. It was really nice last year to be there when they won and to see Europol come on stage with a lot of the. Of the show as well and some of the judges when we look at that category I'm partial to and I would love to see them winning again on that category.

It's really funny to take in the walk winning the argument and then looping back to apologize. Cheerful! Very Real. You know how that goes, you know how? I, do I do have to apologize constantly which start with we can start with the book and then. Backward from there? It's like I mean I I've read about a third of it I'm trying you know. I got my own schedule, but I understand I. Understand I understand what's happening. No, it's got nothing to do with the book. You know my brains in a weird place, but I'm trying to do my homework. It's an incredible kind of thing that we're facing these days. Everybody's multitasking and I never stopped. It's just literally I took ten minutes to take a breath before I got on the air here. Well, yeah I'm just overwhelmed all the time and. really I. my ability to compartmentalize is is limited so changing so rapidly it's unbelievable. We are in the midst of a convulsive historic moment. Yes, in so many ways that once, yes, that it's just mind Bogg- are any of them. Good Jim. Yes. Honestly, I honestly believe that we are you know it's the crowning of a new age is the crowning of Birth GonNa get? Yeah, it's a birth. It's a it's a painful labor and and I think you know it's. It's going to be a great new world. Okay good well. Hold onto that so. With the with the partnership in the book now did you have an idea before to write a book? And and you're like I? Imagine people have been pestering you to write a memoir for probably three decades. Had No designs about at all right really all came from a moment in time where I stepped through the Truman door. You know which I've done several times in my life and try to kind of grow and other branch that I could bring back the tree in. Spending time in New York in the West. Village and Becoming an artist, you know right trying to breathe life back in the West village scene and Rented myself a space there and it was so much fun and I was just you know big bay door open and. Painting and going wild with music at four in the morning batching drunks from the bar next door and it was an incredible experience. And I was really deep into that in a really terrible winter and. I wanted someone to give me kind of a perspective or like an maybe do an essay around the work I was doing. It was all fairly apocalyptic, the paintings of popular horrible people. No not that that came later, okay came. That was a symptom of the. The Liar Right. The cancer that we must remove. The. eight-man! Yeah, the melanoma. That belies deeper sickness. AL's yeah. Yeah, crazy, not an unfamiliar sickness, though is it? No it isn't, but it has. It's reached epic proportions. Since Gordon Gecko said greed is good well. You know it's interesting. I was trying to joke Jim about the how he's the envy of all narcissists, because he actually succeeded in making it all about him, actually everything. And everything everything. Well. Yeah, there's a big danger there, so it's really tough not to concentrate on it. So, this is more than a lot of energy in trying to get that out of there, but but before that I was trying to meet a rider, and maybe talk about an essay around the paintings and Dana Sean. who had no interest in that whatsoever shirt was really serious. Writer didn't WanNa do essays about paintings. you know he came in just? A under that? Under that guy's just meet me and say hello. Because he had been watching online in some of the ridiculous things I was doing were appealing to him like something as simple as blowing I just got up one day and I I tweeted out. Buoying couldn't describe joy in any other way. Have you ever felt man sure? I sometimes I, glimpse glimpses of the boy I usually fight the Boeing I. Nate. We fight the Boeing. Fight the Boeing that be yeah. Yeah, well, that's! Is that because you have. A need to keep the well full the pain well for your art. I don't a lot of people believe that I mean. I've heard that, but like I I've never had to to to work to keep that wealth full. Anything you know I just never. It never dawned on me that people would do that on purpose. When people said, the rain gathers, the well gets full, yeah! I'm just a joy makes me nervous, Jim. That's all it just makes me nervous. Don't know what to do with it I. Don't know how to around it I ended up crying I know especially in this time, but but in this time it's like it's almost like you're afraid. You're afraid to step out and be joyful. You're afraid to. Affirm the positive and stuff, but I'm telling you it's it's a big moment in our history and in. It's a wonderful time to be barely alive. Yeah, I agree with you. It's an exciting time bigger tips and so okay, so so Dana says he doesn't want to write essays about your paintings, but he enjoys. You're single word, joy tweets, and that's where the romance. Me He came to meet me and we struck up a friendship right away and. We kept talking and we had kind of A. He's east coast. I'm west coast. We. We had this skype friendship happening. A high end in the conversations got so interesting. I was doing a lot of viewing at a certain point kind of hiding out from the world was going through a lot of deep currents in my life and. Having. Like major traumatic relationships and things like that that happened. So PTSD keeps me. Very selective at this point. And the atmosphere you feel like. Do you feel like you? You actually had PTSD from it. Yeah, I definitely do..

"Now but like we demand sex but the thing that I created called the tally. And when like Hawkeye's would come in and we would just like market on the tally and then compare days. We're like how many guys came into the Burgers Bagel Bakery and Western center today. You know you're so. You're getting arrested tally just to be like how many guys team like landscaping not harassment. That's kissed this isn't here relate very early mark Zuckerberg yeah. Yeah it is it was there was such a nice. We liked making the BAGELS. Yeah it was a great job it was pretty good. I if I love making the same I I was going to say it's meditative in wonderful songs. You don't have to interact with customers. That's hilarious because my job is to make the sandwiches and then put them into the warmer in the main area and then one time I was out there putting them into the warmer and I was having the morning of my life and woman comes up to me and goes whoa. Why aren't are there any vegetarian? Ones can you make me one of those and I'm like I'm a grown man on television please. Don't I'm doing this I'm a hobbyist this is my this is my just for fun. He'll go to the salad bar. You also recenter descended into realizing be nice to service workers right right service workers. I mean it's funny for me that like the the the interaction because because it's not that I wanted cognitively challenging human interaction I wanted to fuck and be like Yo. It's raining. It sucks totally. That's is what I wanted. I wanted the really predictable. Interactions about Oh my God. You're dresses cute. The weather's great the weather us us nothingness because also you have healthy boundaries. Yeah Yeah Yeah. There's literally a boundary. There's a thing but I think there's something nice nice to about it. Sort of speaks to the human desire to like. Be Good to your fellow human right. Okay have a great one. You know there's something very nice and tender about that. Yeah I think well and then so the article says that people again. This is the the psychologist a need. Both experiences variances of mastery and pleasure for healthy mood. So if you're if if in the future were getting rid of and we've gotten rid of I mean to stop to some extent you know they're just in my lifetime. I remember when my first movie came out in two thousand ten. The festival process process narco. Rising premiered by South West went onto ten cities. It doesn't matter it. My I remember when that first movie came out they were still doing like paper. There are some things that you had to ono. DVD's we were sending DVD which was kind of which is hilarious hilarious but I remember like making labels remain DVD's and fixing them and they were beautiful. And I would put them in an envelope and I would do it with such care. I would include a cover a letter and I poured my heart into these cover letters and and so there was something taught. I never got one of those. No I would have been thrilled. Obviously but it's the stuff that comes in. The mail sucks. It's like he's like when you're phone rings it's like what what are you doing. I don't want somebody better be dying because I do not want to give it. When you're giving something physical to process becomes it becomes a chore? It's like I need a filing cabinet now because you gave me this thing and I get it but this was going. I mean as you'll read about in my book medallion status. I talk about how the Television Academy the Television Academy and all of the networks and all the streamers sent out. DVD's ask ask still still not of shows that are on streaming platforms. Talking all television is digital. But you get this massive stonehenge own Ange Yup of DVD's in these incredibly Ornate cardboard boxes just as monument to waste. Yeah it's on your counter and reminds you. There's so much television out there and still not getting hired bread so I think like but what's interesting is that that whole world at least at my level of like when I was applying to film festivals was there was a.

"I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter and Bat obviously the Emmy nominations came out this past week and my first reaction was really to admire the wealth of material that is so oh good and you know the academy. The television academy has been paddled in the past for the sort of reflexive conservative re-nominating modern family teen times not that there's anything a great series it but got to the point where it seemed crazy just keep nominating and over and over again this time there is some really fresh interesting shows and actually some formidable matchups yeah I mean I think a lot of the headlines that came out of the Emmy nominations were based on game of thrones getting a record thirty two nominations but if you look deeper there are a lot of nuance shows like fleabag getting into the comedy race killing Eve in the drama race bowl shows from phoebe waller bridge if you look. Ed Shits Creek which is a word. I don't know if we can say on the radio <hes> but it is spell with a C. H.. In two TS <hes> that's a show that has been on for a number of years and not gotten much attention but the ground swell of love for the stars Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara got popped T._v.. Its first emmy nominations and there's a lot of Nice little narratives like that yeah I I was late to the Shits Creek Party. Yes it is going to say that word and <hes> benched it on Netflix like so many people I was like Oh look what I found on Netflix when really pop would probably like to assassinate me for even saying that except be really can binged on Netflix and it's pretty great. I'm also really impressed by the very high impact series that ran. They're not in the same category we have the R Kelly series from lifetime in the in one category up against <hes> Leah Remedies Scientology series and weirdly comedians in cars. I mean very very very different kind of material. Anthony Bourdain also is going to be I think for a lot of people an emotional choice but that r Kelly dock as we know he's imprisoned or Kelly right now and I think a lot of credit goes not only to Jim de regardless the journalists who pursued. Him For so long but Dream Hampton and lifetime for doing that series and if you look at the authorities who arrested r Kelly they specifically cited that Docu series as being the thing that opened there is to what was going on and if I'm lifetime I'm looking at that and saying wow that should be our emmy materials because this is the best advertisement you could get for winning. An award is that there's real world impact. You might think that the H._B._O.. Series leaving nevertheless would be in the same category with the R Kelly but it's not <hes> and it is up against you know things that are so diverse in and you know again. This is golden age in many ways some of the stuff I mean minding the gap and this points to the confusion. What's a T._v.? Show what's a movie mining. The gap was an Oscar contender this now also an emmy contender. That's happened before in the last few years and it's it's confusing and in the same category you have you know Jane Fonda Series and <hes> thing about Gilda radner and the it's it's a very <hes> odd set of. Things to be competing with each other but talking about cultural impact. I think you know I don't even know if we can measure what the impact of that series was but I think it was huge yeah. The breath of the nominees is one of the reasons that H._B._O.. Oh really clobbered Netflix this year. If you remember from last year the big narrative was at after seventeen years netflix finally overtook H._B._O.. As the top nominee at the emmys this year no such luck now obviously game of thrones was a big reason and for that but even if you take out the number one nominee on both of them game of Thrones H._B._O.. And when they see us the central park five miniseries on Netflix H._B._O.. Would still be the winner this year and that might be the Swan Song. I think in the future is going to be really difficult for H._B._O.. To compete with what Netflix is doing now. We're seeing the output of H._B._O.. Increase via this new streaming service called H._B._O.. Max that was announced last week but in the short term Netflix Netflix is really focused on winning awards and they are green-lighting things with an eye on whether they can win Oscars Emmy's so for the foreseeable future. I predict the emmy champion is going to be Netflix but it's going to be a nice party this year.

"You're listening to Stanley Clarke from the boys in the hood soundtrack because we wanna take a moment to remember filmmaker John singleton he died yesterday at age fifty one after suffering a stroke a few days ago, singled him down and film history for being the first African American and the youngest person ever to be nominated for an Oscar for best director. "And when you do me more, thanks man, quick quick like secondary nominations or somebody you don't wanna let go go by without shouting out Betty gilpin, ferments in glow. So good. Also, Betty gilpin performance outside of low is really good. I highly recommend listening to any podcast interview that you can get your hands on with her. She is just an incredible like find as a public persona. Okay. 'cause I don't think people really heard of her before the show gilpin come on desktop. She's very direct. I really not not afraid to say what she thinks she is just like incredibly vivid imagery that you wouldn't even necessarily guess like from the show. But yeah, I mean, glow is a show that I think as you guys have discussed on the show before really took the leap at a lot of that has to do with her character getting to be like in the first season. She's pretty objectively like the wrong woman. Ruth does something really shitty to her in the sense of sleeping with her husband. And then this season she gets to like be a brat and be mean and not be like a super uncomplicated hero. Yeah, and that both fits with the themes of the show really well, but was a great performance for her. And I'm also television academy voters if you're listening. She was kind of the surprise nomination out of that cast. And I'm so happy for her any other performances you wanna show up for move on? I think we all love is it really reacing racy here. This has been a topic of much. Conversation I have. I've investigated her own Twitter account or she answers this question very, very, politely. Every time somebody asks racy horn, of course, plays Kim Wexler, better call sauce. That's my favorite show. That's my favorite character on the show you guys talked about this on the show. I think this week about episode three and her performance and episode three and how tightly wound she is and what she's searching for. And that show has been criticized for having the sort of dual track the being Mike story, Jimmy story, and sometimes they cross over. But for the most part, they don't when they force them to cross over, it feels unnatural. But Kim story is the story that I most invested in maybe because I know that she's not a part of the show that came before this, and so there's the most unexplored territory there. So she's also just a fascinating, brilliant, captivating actress who I think was basically a sitcom actress prior to that. She was on Whitney. Just one of my favorite characters. Lindsay is all Jorde about her character earlier this year for the site just huge fan of hers shoutout to the supporting players that supporting performance. Her earring. In her ponytail. And I read this point her arm, sling men, the like the different the makeup they're doing as BRUCE'S, fade on her face, like the one of the things that really jumped out at me about that scene in episode, four between her and Jimmy, and the bathroom was the fact that she's acting almost entirely with her is because everything else is kind of restricted by the sling and her her business sued and her ponytail, like all of this stuff. But like in her eyes, you can kinda just see her being like, oh shit. This guy's conman. Okay. Let's move onto the biggest surprise of the summer, and this can be taken in in a bunch of different ways. It could be pleasant surprise. It could be, I didn't know they made them like this anymore surprise or it could be. I didn't know that people would watch the show surprise. So I'll start with you Alison. My pick honestly fits basically every single one of those categories which would be the multimedia artists. Terence dance was given a late night show. I guess you would call it on HBO called random acts of Linus. I was honestly not very familiar with his work. Prior to this, I interviewed him and watched a lot of it for research and he shall we say, like not the usual person that you would pull out of the talent pool to get a half hour on HBO. He obviously has not worked in TV before, and he makes stuff that you know is weird and challenging and much more in the world of fine, art and even conventional filmmaking. He had a feature that was really big and Sundance in twenty twelve. I think it's called an over simplification of her beauty..

"You know that typical like that would work anyways, the list from the production assistant. The first name on the list is Paul Newman is who they wanted, and I'm thinking, I can't imagine like, and what budget would they have? What would you had to pay? Paul Newman to do an episode of super train. Now, let's address some of those legends about super train. There's a legend out there that says that super train was so costly. After all, they spent five million dollars on the train sets alone that it along with the loss of money from the nineteen eighty Olympics helped to almost bankrupt. NBC I prevent story to, and you know, NBC had the deal for the Moscow Olympics for nine hundred eighty and we pulled out the Soviets went into Afghanistan at Christmas seventy nine. So the US backed out in the NBC was left. But again, the Olympics that was Lloyds of one, then there was a policy on on all of it. So while they didn't get the exposure that you know, you're basically running the Olympic so you can plug things like super train. They never got that. But I don't think it was that huge loss for NBC and the the things I've seen on super train. I mean, it was the modeled themselves in the set for about five million. They certainly weren't spending a lot of money on guest stars. I think because of the compress nature of the production. A lot of these people, I don't think they could get him lined up. So I don't think there was a lot of money spent there. In fact, that production book I have it's surprising how many people are working for like thirty five hundred dollars for the episode or five grand. It's really not. I think that the Knicks edge rated credit that super train nearly pulled in BC down. I, I don't think that I don't think so. I think that's just kind of one of those is the the legend that it's become it get some of that credit. Okay. So we'll scratch that one off the list. What about the story of Fred Silverman visiting the set and kicking one of the trains and breaking his whole. Yeah. And I don't know if that I don't know if that's true. That one I can actually confirm or rather Silverman himself did confirm here. He is talking about it in an interview with the television academy foundation from two thousand eight kick locomotive, and nobody told me cast iron and crack my Tope. Build a locomotive with. You know out of cast iron show you when it could have been paper for ROY audience, Gary Silverman by the way would never turn around and BC. They remained in last place for the three years while he was president, he was fired in nineteen Eighty-one not everything he did with bad though. He did make the series commitments for cheers and Saint elsewhere before he got the boot. He revitalized the news division and maybe most significantly he did re introduce the peacock logo that NBC has used since then. It may not be surprising that it was never released on DVD, but consider that pink lady or pink lady and Jeff, another notorious bomb from the Fred Silverman NBC era did get a DVD release and it kind of makes, you wonder, well, I hear a copy of full. Of course, you would have got the, of course you would. That's that's a gym from the NBC years back when that got announced, oh my gosh, never leave it. They need to buy. I need to two in case. I wear them out. Super train has basically vanished since nineteen seventy nine though it did air couple of other times and to my knowledge over the years lifetime in the late eighties, ran the two hour movie wants and the Caribbean, some Caribbean cable channel had the had the show and ran it for whatever reason in the nineteen eighties as well. And that's where most of the bootleg copies that have surfaced over the years have come from there. And other than that, you know, it's been out of, it's basically gone. I know they donated a couple of episodes to the. I think museum of television in Los Angeles I spoke to. I spoke to someone at universal a couple of years ago because that's, you know, it NBC and universal or together now and they. Looking and I think they only basically came up with the pilot so it may not even be possible to get it released on DVD. That's the real crime here..
