What's Next For Metal Gear Solid
"Series is hitting P. C.. J.. Gabe at Gamespot, the military series is hitting. Via Gog. Konami has announced previously only a select few games in the franchise were available outside of consoles the. Games hitting the service either MELA gear bill you're solid and bill your saw to substance were already to in. Taiwan, prior to the official announcement. Malaysia solid and substance actually had come to before and your saw five was also released four PC. But this should give those who never played playstation or xbox a chance to experience more of the Franchise Miller you're solid for to the Patriots remains a PS three exclusive. The new offerings don't seem to have any enhancements and you're getting the original metal gear solid rather than the Gamecube remake which I personally prefer I prefer the original not necessarily the game remains what I'm saying substance dot clear. Yeah. Substance does feature has an extra content not found mill solitudes original release. Releasing as the as collector's series, also be able to get five Castle Dania N. Contra. Games. Including Super See Dracula's curse and Simon's quest these games originally released on the s along with the series along with the Melody Games. The total cost for all titles is thirty two dollars. Tim is very exciting stuff for people who WanNa play these Games on. My one question is, when are we ever going to get your solid for? That's the thing anywhere else anywhere besides the playstation three it's bizarre. I am utterly shocked like back for all the young ones out there which is crazy at this point like even that era, there's probably of people listening to this right now that don't know what I'm referring to but when melanie solid four came out, it was the mean game of when's IT GONNA come to three sixty and it's like, oh, man, how many disc? On. Like nine there was like photoshop shops like xbox three, sixty cases with like that stick. With metal gear solid four on ten million discs But the fact of the actually never came out on another console is really weird and I think a lot of it has to do with the whole Kojima. Konami situation that went down around MCS five, but even then the fact that four wasn't. Like ported at some point. Di Around. With the architecture of the game because I know the game was advertised as a PS. Four game or a PS three game, it was kind of synonymous with. The launch of that console envier to some extent feels very built into like when you're transitioning from chapter to chapter, I remember getting the loading screen of. Solid Snake Smoking, the cigar and you. Believe. There are like tips in there to be like, Hey, you know take a break like the which took awhile. This. Going to take awhile I. Hey, you know relax take a break between sessions all that stuff that stuff seem. Very built into like the PS three system as far as at least like how this stuff look like it looked like a PS three like installation screen as opposed to just an in game thing. So I wonder if there's something about that game in particular that it's tough to port.
C.I.A. Operatives in the Early Years of the Cold War
"Scott Anderson joins us now from the catskills. He is a contributing writer for the New York, Times magazine, and the author of many books. His latest is called the quiet Americans four CIA spies. Of the Cold War tragedy in three acts, Scott Welcome back to the podcast. Thanks much nice to be here. So you are allowed on the podcast to talk about your previous book Lawrence in Arabia which came out in twenty thirteen hand, which of course feels like now centuries ago which makes it clear to our listeners are longtime listeners that this is not your first. Book. Involving spies I'm curious what what's the draw for you but I think Speiser inherently fascinating in not just to an awful lot of people and of thought about what is I think it's the the allure of having a secret life. I think that I think that for an awful lot of people this idea that you have a whole separate identity is really fascinating New People. What I was drawn to in both the Lawrence and with in the quite America's the foresee a officers I follow is that in both cases, this was at a time when individuals out in the field had a tremendous freedom of action. So it wasn't. People sitting behind desks following policy that they're actually out in the field doing crazy stuff. You also have a personal connection to the story right in terms of what your father did for living you talk a little bit about that. Sure. My father was agricultural adviser for the Agency for International Development, which was a branch of the State Department. I grew up in. East. Asia in in Korea and Taiwan as Indonesia. and. So this was the nineteen fifties, nineteen sixties when I came along American government workers abroad often in those sorts of countries often were two hats whatever their official job was my father's job as agriculture adviser but it was also part of this great anti Communist crusade was happening around the world. So the upfront hearts and minds, soft power aspect of my father's work was working on agrarian reform in line with countries like these countries were were the land was was had been controlled infra centuries by all darkies. But the the more hard power in the darker side of what my father was doing was was setting up rural vigilante squads, home guard militias to watch over the local populace and to make sure that they weren't being swayed by the communist in certainly in countries like Taiwan or South Korea. If you were exposed or accused of being a leftist, your life was not going to go. Well, you know I'm now getting a sense of why one of the four characters in your previous book was an agronomist perhaps. That's right. Yeah it's well It's it's an interesting thing because. It just for national development was often used by the CIA as a cover because. Are Out, in the field, they're not, they're not saying, I'm destined to capitol there often out among the local population and probably have a better sense of what's happening. Outside what you one thing I'll say I've noticed over time in different countries. I've been almost invariably the ex Patriot community that knows best what's happening in the country are tend to be the people are out in the field in often the Middle East is the oil guys. They have a sense much more than than people sitting around in the capital. Let's start with frank wizner. The first person you mentioned, and this is not the the first book to be written at least in part about wisner who was he and what made him. So central to the story wizards amazing Turkey was a corporate lawyer who was working at a Wall Street firm when even before World War Two broke out and he quit his law firm to join the navy, he ended up being an operative for the office to teacher services, which is the the wartime intelligence agency of the of the army that they owe asset kind of the precursor to the CIA. That's right. That's right and he ends up being A. Kind of the first American to to to witness. The Soviet takeover of country in Eastern Europe, and this was in Romanian to summer of nineteen forty. Four So full year before the war ended and a wizard was on the ground as a as an oasis operative and just watch the strong arm tactics did really a matter of weeks led the Soviets to take control the country he and he was sending cables back to Washington telling telling them what are so good allies doing he sees the say he has the same experience in eastern Germany at the end of. The war in watching the way the Soviets for taking over, he goes back to his law from for couple of years for the complete unhappy, and then when the CIA starts up in nineteen forty seven, they have this idea that they wanna start a covert operations branch of of the CIA called the Office of Policy Coordination and frank listeners chosen to head that the name was deliberately chosen to be really boring. That's right and in fact, the name itself, the Office of policy coordination was was so top secret that even you can't even say the name out loud for twenty five years. So in that role wizner e created, what what he called the mighty world, which was this vast covert operations umbrella of a operating throughout the world and everything from hard power aspects of it like dropping dropping partisans behind the iron curtain to everything to cultural stuff voice. Of America. Radio Free Europe that was all came out of the Office of Policy Coordination.
Worldwide COVID-19 Cases Soar as Scientists Scramble for Response
"This week in America a grim and telling number. More than two hundred, thousand people have now died officially of Covid nineteen the House of Representatives held a moment of silence yesterday to acknowledge that painful milestone more people have been infected there than in any other country. Cases continue to climb states that suffered the most are recovering but infections and others are rising, which seemed to have been making progress in tackling the virus is against infections spreading fast and in Britain, and elsewhere there were expectations warnings of a second wave. I'm sorry to say that as in Spain and France and many other countries we've reached a perilous journey. With a vaccine still well down the line preparations are being made for an uncertain and tragic winter. And many governments have squandered precious time failing to prepare for what's to come. I think it's important to realize that each country experiences curb in its own way. Edward Car is the economists deputy editor. Europe. At the moment is going through a second wave cases in. India. Very high but overall it's been a consistent increase relentlessly such that they're announced note two million recorded cases day. And that reflects I think the both the nature of the disease and the insufficient grasp of the basic public health policy response that's required and are there any bright spots? Any positives to look too at this stage? Well, of course, in the background, which is hugely important has been fantastic and really impressive work by scientists and doctors, both to kind of work on the treatment protocols to find various medicines and to do research on vaccines. So that's all that's also entering in the background and it is beginning to have an effect on fatality rates, but there's a lot more to come on that. And what are the improvements on the medical side specifically. Well quite a lot of it's kind of really basic medicine. So when people first presented with what was thought to be essentially a respiratory illness, the focus was on the lungs people were put on ventilators in very large numbers vary eilly and that that wasn't always very good for them and didn't help them as much as was needed. Now it's realized this is a disease that attacks many organs in the body has stroke is a big problem that kids can suffer the heart damage and doctors a much better at keeping an eye on fluid levels on oxygen levels on treating the symptoms that might be harming various organs. So just in sheer sort of management of the disease that being big improvements. And then, of course, the medicines of and POPs one of the most important decks and methods zone is a is a very cheap steroid that can be bought and supplied in large quantities in that has for people who need oxygen and to need ventilation can lead to substantial declines in mortality of twenty to thirty percent. And the hope is that over the coming months, there'll be more medicines and. Vaccines which will bring that fatality rate down still more. and. What's your sort of overarching take on the the public health response. For the Public Health Response has been just much much more variable for a number of complex reasons. I think one problem political problem has been some differences on on what the priorities should be. Some countries have a ticket only favored keeping the economy open and Sweden's often held up as an example there possibly an idealized example because in fact, actually there were restrictions others have tried to keep the death rate down to zero by having a blanket. On the economy I personally think the both of those extremes are wrong. Sweden's actually had quite high death rate and quite a big blow to its economy compared with the neighboring countries, Finland Norway. Denmark. He's done some worse on both those measures. New Zealand has had a stunningly successful. Ability to keep the deaths right down but it's paid a very high price because it's shot the the whole country down and if you look at a country like Taiwan been even more successful on deaths and paid a much much smaller price in terms of the economy. And I think that that's because the countries that have been prepared to make trade offs and have had good public health can succeed in both reducing fatality rates and in keeping bits of the economy open. But what does that look like in detail? How should that that trade off actually be made you think? I think are two or three key components, and the first of those is a really granular testing and tracing operation. The second thing that's important is being sensible about the trade offs and then the third thing that's important is how to communicate this. I think people are quite goods in an emergency at taking difficult steps to change their lives but it's very hard to sustain and this will need to be sustained already need to stay for nine months but this'll go on for a long time yet before supplies all vaccines are plentiful enough for everybody to being vaccinated and even then the vaccines might not work that well or they're affect might be temporary so we're going to be living with this disease for a long time yet. I mean a lot of this advice was was starting to become clear even even months ago, and why do you think it is at different countries responses continue to be so divergent when the the best practice seem. To, be converging. I think that's a hard question to answer I. Think part of it was the enormous relief when countries have had a bad first wave came out of lockdown at the end of the spring, and in the summer. And there was a sense of cough people just thought thank goodness and governments having got through that desperate first phase of the disease themselves were relieved are never quite caught up. I mean the countries that have done this really really well, and I I think Taiwan is absolutely top of the class here have been good from the very beginning. and You perhaps feel at some other countries catching up in other places. In the United States, I think has to stand ups an example of this, the poor communication and the changes in rules reflect the politicization of the disease. There are too many people who have a stake in it working one way or another, and it's it's a tragedy. I think that the Centers for Disease Control and prevention which went into this pandemic as perhaps the most highly regarded public health body in the world has suffered from errors and poor leadership and denigration from the White House. That's that's just done nothing tool for the overrule effort. Are you hopeful are you more hopeful about the the post vaccine era and the experience today has made us all. Yes I think people, and I think people learn and learn more slowly than than baps they ought to but they do learn and you know I say the scientific response to this disease has been incredible and and that's something to feel cheerful about is just the even the best scientific response will take longer than people might like I did that time many people will suffer?
The PS5 is the biggest game console in modern history
"Playstation five little story here. So PSI hardware images show the size of the biggest game console of modern history. And so ladies and gentlemen breakout those tape measures. So new PS five images of come our way the Taiwan's National Communications Commission. So according to Sony the PS five. Sits fifteen point four inches tall ten point two, four inches deep. And four inches wide for comparison, the xbox series XS eleven point eight, five inches, tall five point nine, four inches eve, and five point nine, four inches way. I'm GonNa try to pull these images of Brittany apple up So I heard this news and I just bought a new entertainment console, which was really stupid because I should have waited until we got everything but thankfully, everything fits in my slots. So I'll be. Okay. So. Yeah. I was a little nervous also, if you're curious about the xbox series s an ex or maybe just one or the other anyway, you can go on their twitter account on the eighteenth of September, they tweeted out fat is so fat they tweeted out a link to a cut out you can print it out and cut it out a model size of the what the Xbox is going to how big it's going to be. A paper cut out. It's really cute. So if you want to build it and make sure it will fit in your areas, you can do that. So I know it's on the website, but it's probably just easier to find it on their twitter account. But yeah, that's a fat boy.

Friday 18 September
"Now, as we just heard, China's navy is acting live fire drills near the Taiwan Strait. There's little doubt about the intended audience because in the slender credit, where'd you file of us? President Donald Trump remains his phone call shortly after his election to President Chang of Taiwan the first time the US president or indeed president-elect had spoken to the Taiwanese counterpart since nine hundred, seventy, nine, president trump clearly understands that there is no more reliable way of winding. Up China then embracing Taiwan, which may be why he has now dispatched the highest ranking American envoy in decades kaethe crutch on the secretary of State for Economic Growth Energy and the environment, a rank which seems calibrated to annoy China even more by making any overt rage on their part appears somewhat silly one joined with more on this by Isabel Hilton CEO of China. Dialogue is a bill first of all the the visit of chief crash and I've allowed time for everybody to furiously Google is just trolling on America's part. And Up to a point you you left often you know one elements in the winding up of list, which is that he's there to attend the memorial service for former president of Taiwan, Li dung-wei who has counted as the most hated Taiwanese in Beijing because leading Guay was the man who really lead Taiwan to democracy and was also an advocate of Taiwan as kind of independent cultural and political entity from China. So he's really not very you know he's definitely not on the Christmas, Card List for sheeting pin and to pay tribute to him is pretty certainly would be read in Beijing as a as a a further effort crime. So what degree of C- Will Beijing be at over this visit? Well I think we're seeing it now. I mean a great deal of of rather dangerous firepower is buzzing around at the moment An. We've seen really since June kind of escalating provocation from China, in sort of entering various kind of buffer zones which are pretty much being respected for decades you know around Taiwan that you can you can threatened and rattler cage but on the whole, it's been recognized that if you if you cross certain. Lines then you are risking at least an accident so. I mean the the the problem was that you know. In. The last well, just today actually eighteen Chinese bomas an and find the jets and Taiwan's advance buffer zone and that caused the cost Taiwan to scramble its jet. You had a lot of very you know serious. Flying around and I think that. Is and that along with the naval exercises and and a great deal of rhetoric is probably as far as it will go. But you know we have seen a prolonged campaign for the last three or four years of diplomatic isolation of kind of steady pressure on Taiwan from China, and certainly this doesn't help. You correctly observed that the US envoy is there to attend the memorial service for a former Taiwanese president. He will also be meeting with the current Taiwanese president is likely that anything of actual substance is being discussed between the president of one country and the Under Secretary of state for you know whatever from the other one or is this again? Largely. Theatrical. I wouldn't count on it being largely theatrical If you know we, we've wh as you know, we have a kind of dealing confrontation between the US and China and some alarming voices in Washington. Are, advocating, for example, the United States should supply nuclear weapons to Taiwan, which would be pretty crazy move in my view. But. There is a commitment from the United States to supply to Taiwan such a defensive Capability as is required now, it would be quite easy to argue that in a situation of enhanced tension greater a military supplies, more more military supplies. Packs more advanced military supplies were required and I would expect that to be part of the conversation I would also expect at least saying went to be exploring the idea of more formal cooperation between Taiwan and the United States last US official. To visit, which was relatively recently that produced an agreement on of collaboration on health I think timing when would very much like to see a free trade agreement with the United States. So again, I think this quite a lot to discuss an I would be surprised if this visit took place without some of them being on the table is anything really likely to shift in the near future though in any direction where this is concerned is everybody involved not basically biting their tongues and one hopes. Metaphorically as well as literally holding their fire until election day in the United States and certainly hope so you know the the US position on Taiwan, which is a it's a treaty obligation to to make sure that Taiwan can defend itself. This doesn't actually commit the United States to coming to the defense of Taiwan, but there is a kind of strategic ambiguity in in this treaty, which is designed to stop Taiwan declaring independence and therefore provoking China to stop China assuming that were it to. Stage a military salt. The. United. States would stand by and and not come to the defense of Taiwan. So the ambiguity in the US position is designed to keep both sides. Calm. Under a trump administration of calm is not a highly valued factor in Washington's calculations but I think. That the hope would be in Washington that enough kind of chest bearing and beating. We'll just keep everybody from doing anything too rash said, he don't think that China would relish an armed conflict, but on the other hand if the United States and Taiwan scenes to provocative in Beijing, in order to satisfy, it's increasingly nationalist domestic opinion and a PLA that seems fairly rested at the moment they might feel obliged to do something and as soon as you do something in a situation like this, then your provoking something very, very dangerous indeed

"taiwan" Discussed on Monocle 24: The Foreign Desk
"You're listening to the foreign desk with me. Andrew Miller still with me is Joseph. Woo Foreign Minister of Taiwan. Let's get back to Taiwan's peculiar relationship with China. You've personally been dealing with it for a very long time. We met in Taipei in two thousand and five. When you were mainland affairs minister I remember asking you about the future and you replied the destroying China would probably not be a one hundred percent. Blessing photogr warm but the chaotic. China would be a disaster now at the time you earned most Taiwanese politicians. I spoke to thought that the strange limbo that has become the status quo was probably actually the best option. Do you think that's still the case? Yes he's still the best option for us and it serves the best interest of all parties concerned. The earlier part of your question is whether China's relations with Taiwan is better off or worse off than when I was serving in this council. I can tell you that is probably not as bad as what he was. At that time the closer relations was terrible at that time. And I think You came to one not long. After China issue that anti-secession law the cross-strait relations work in a terrible situation and we gradually improved over the years even though it gets worsened in the last few years. But it's still not to the degree when we sold the across the situation in two thousand four two thousand five in two thousand six and etc but what we see in China is that China is becoming much stronger. Either in the military sense or in the economic sins and China's objective remains the same. They want to take Taiwan over peaceful possible by force if necessary and I think they are gearing up their military activities. They're all Taiwan. They have several major air exercises and surface exercises around Taiwan aimed at intimidating Taiwan people. So we sense that there is strongly and I think China use also much stronger economically and diplomatically so they tried to suppress our international participation. They tried to take over our diplomatic allies and etc and they tried to impose the one China principle on international community so even though the closer relations seems to be better than during the period of time when I was serving in the men and Affairs Council. But it's not that good and I think a strong China may not be a blessing for Taiwan as I say. China will continue to threaten Taiwan militarily diplomatically. But if China is going into a chaotic situation what we are very concerned about is that China may want to find. Scapegoats to divert is domestic attention so the current period of time when the Chinese economy is slowing down when the international criticism against China is becoming very strong. We are concerned that China may want to fight Taiwan the best scapegoats that he can have and as a result we are being dealing with China in very cautious way and I say that a little bit earlier under current kind of circumstances not only title. Why should try to maintain a status quo? Which prevented across a situation from going chaotic in. I think the international community should also take interest in helping Taiwan helping China to maintain the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. It's clear enough. We're seeing it already. That China is attempting at some level to use its own handling if the covert nineteen pandemic as the lever of diplomatic outreach. Is there any element of Taiwan trying to do the same? Do you see an opportunity here to score points off China whether it's inviting. Us correspondence which have been expelled from China to set up in Taiwan or taking in more Hong Kong dissidents like the bookseller lamb winky. And we've also seen Taiwan as China is donating face masks and other gear to Japan the Philippines in Europe. I'm sure those are all gratefully received but is a complete altruism on your part or are you sensing an opportunity here to promote Taiwan. Then me try to clarify. We try to do things as you indicated out of our goodwill to other countries or two individuals who are being persecuted or being damaged by the virus outbreak. We think it is the right thing Taiwan to be able to do that. We are not doing it because of China. If you look at the American officials description of Taiwan they described Taiwan asset democratic success. Story a reliable partner in a forceful good in the world in. We think that we deserve that description. Because our democracy is very successful we want to share. Time wants experience of democratisation with other countries. We want to support those people who are fighting for their own freedom fighting for democracy. So there's there's no hope of winning back some of the the diplomatic partners. Beijing has prized off in recent years because obviously countries have to make that choice about whether they have a a full relationship with either Taiwan or the People's Republic in the last few years. Is You know. Obviously China has prized off El Salvador. Kiribati the Solomon Islands. And a few others. Think you're down to just fifteen full diplomatic partners now. Yes we have fifteen diplomatic populace right now. We want to maintain the diplomatic relations with our diplomatic allies. And if there's any other country want to recognize Taiwan people naturally we welcome that but we are not going to engage in diplomatic competition with China. We will try to safeguard nevertheless our remaining diplomatic allies. And we'll we'll try to show to the international community that the way Taiwan is helping those diplomatic allies can be seeing us a Taiwan model. We help their agricultural production. We help the Job Training. We help in the medical assistance and we tried to make their lives better. Because what I'm wondering is if you get a sense as a foreign minister that anything about what the world is now having to deal with is is putting other crises into some sort of perspective or Div feel like that. Diplomacy is carrying on as usual while everything else is happening. Why I think the world is very different place right now. For example in some European countries or even the major metropolitan areas of the United States. The medical system is almost collapsed. And it's heartbreaking to see that in some countries. The medical doctors need to choose among patients who to save an who gave up. And it's very heartbreaking for everybody who sees that news and if you look at the economic impact. I think is even greater. Economic production seems to be not only slowing down in. Some occasions is stopped. The consumption is also slowing down. Tourism is slowing down and under this kind of situation. We also need to look at the way that economic production model as being handled whether it is a viable to put all the critical or strategic material production in the same country in. I think many countries are actually looking at these. You right now and we're also looking at the. Who itself where the W. H. O? Is Actually helping international community fighting against Kobe? Nineteen or whether this any new model in dealing with whether we are going to produce the medicine or vaccines fast enough under the. Who is still not certain in therefore this a lot for us to examine what the current diplomacy has been doing. And what I would suggest is that we need to engage in international cooperation Indian with current epidemic or future epidemic. And I think we need to come up with the best practices especially based on the experiences of those countries that are more successful and I think we also need to think very hard on the Lionel supply chain one thing I would like to point out. Further is transparency transparency is associated with diplomacy or associated with democracy in us. We us our experience can tail. Transparency is probably the most important factor in dealing with a pandemic like this and to transparency can only be associated with a democracy in as I say the inaugural occasions. Taiwan cannot afford to seal. But if you look at other authoritarianism they. Institutionally are incapable of handling the truce. So that is something that we need to think. Very hard on in terms of future development of mankind. Joseph Wu. Thank you very much for joining us on the foreign desk. That's it for this episode of the Foreign Desk. "We're willing to use the greatest sincerity and try your best to strive for the prospect of peaceful reunification because to realize reunification through peaceful methods is most beneficial to our crossed straight compatriots and the whole Chinese nation. You would do not promise to renounce the use of force and reserve your option to use all necessary measures ball loose hygiene Egypt. Be All sorts through the shame on. China the seventy issue is always a big one especially now. There's so much talk in China under party leader shooting pain of the might of China the China dream you know how great the nation and so this is the million dollar question whether or not China will make a move on Taiwan. It's not impossible. Beijing has always made its intentions extremely clear especially with its military. China's really fast improving its capabilities. Even at the height of the coronavirus pandemic Beijing somehow found a way to fly. Fighter jets over Taiwan's airspace to assert its sovereignty and so as China gets more and more powerful less nations are willing to stand up on behalf of Taiwan Taiwan's also in this part of the world where there are so many massive territorial disputes over islands in the South and east China Seas. There are plenty of reasons. Conflict Spark in this part of the world's but there are many other ways that China can gain a greater foothold in Taiwan through business and economic links Taiwan Francis home to many key apple suppliers who have factories in China. So what happens if those plants were all of a sudden order to close down or parts? Ships doesn't necessarily have to be physical move in terms of how China wants to coerce Taiwan. And so this is something to watch in terms of cross-strait relations going forward.

"It's created a lot from that time on Nineteen forty-nine it's created a lot of geopolitical political strife that we still see today because Chang's Republic of China was the first UN member attacks by an access power so going all the way back to World War Two. It was actually given the honor of being the first country signed the UN Charter in one thousand nine forty five so the R. O. C. received a permanent seat on the UN Security Council along with the US. Britain France and the Soviet Union but when the civil war happened and Chang lost all of a sudden there was a really awkward situation. The ROTC was on the Security Council whereas Communist China with all these people were shut out entirely so until chain died in one. Thousand nine seventy five. He was determined to retake China to go back and reunify as though he kept refusing to accept a two-state solution at the UN where Mouse People's Republic of China would receive the Security Council seat and Taiwan's Republic of China government but stay in the UN in other words mouse. China was in Chang's China without ends the terms of the resolution on twenty fifth October Nineteen seventy-one by the General Assembly decided to restore Tutti People's Republic of China all of its rights and to recognize the representative's office government as the sole legitimate representatives of China and the United Nations. So that's exactly what happened. Un resolution in Nineteen seventy-one transferred that Security Council seat from chains China to mouse China for both sides. You have to understand that. There was always a goal to retake the other so both sides both now in Chiang always wanted to reunify China. Obviously that was a conclusion from the Chinese civil war that was never fully settled. Both sides always wanted to have power and dominance again over the other and both sides claiming that they were the the one true China when of course there were two very separate governments that were now forming. When Taiwan was first moving towards democracy China was pretty unruffled. The island was still led again by chains. Party also called the combing dog and so it was definitely a party. A governance system that China was more familiar with in many ways mainland. China probably didn't see this coming. How democracy has bloomed in Taiwan? There are so many different political parties. Now there are elections. I mean it's it's something. That's become less and less recognizable and understandable to Beijing..

"China officially regards Taiwan as temporarily Rogue Province. Which will one day be reincorporated into the motherland for decades? China has subjected Taiwan to various pressures. Some more subtle than others in one thousand nine hundred fifty eight. Chinese artillery fired nearly half a million shells containing propaganda leaflets at the Taiwanese island of Kinmen visitors. To Kinmen can still get these made into knives as recently as this week. China took umbrage at the Netherlands. Changing the name of its trade and Investment Office in Taiwan to Netherlands Office Taipei which Beijing thought sounded affronting. -Ly Embassy Ish to look at how we got here. He's Sophia Yan. China correspondent for the Telegraph to understand the Taiwan issue. We need to go back decades even before the current communist Chinese government that we are familiar with today was even formed. The government of Taiwan formerly known as the Republic of China which I'll shorten ROTC once controlled. All of China at the hell was a man named Shank. T- can't even woman bunk room now. Chang's our republic of fought alongside the US against Japan in World War Two. After Japan surrendered Tokyo gave up a colony that it had controlled for decades and that was the island of Taiwan. Us forces than essentially gave Taiwan. General Chang a few years later we come to nine hundred forty nine chains party. The nationalists lost the Chinese civil war against the Communists led by Mao Zedong on media chain then fled to Taiwan where he reestablished the Republic of China government back in mainland China Mao founded the People's Republic of China governed by the Communist Party which remains in control today so ever since Nineteen forty-nine Communist China has considered Taiwan a renegade province. The black sheep in the family of course sees it very differently. After decades of martial law Taiwan democratize in the nineteen nineties and has its own currency and military foreign policy passports. The Celtics Island is twenty three million in its now one of Asia's freest countries..

"Apparently there's been a lot of criticism of Dr. Ted Drove the Director General of the World Health Organization. He's been accusing Taiwan of making racist attacks on him which is some pretty strong statements against Taiwan. But there was evidence. Those attacks aren't actually coming from Taiwan. What's going on? This was quite remarkable episode Last week the W. H. O. Has largely not even mentioned the word. Taiwan there was an infamous video about a week prior to that where a a senior. Who official was being questioned by a reporter from Hong Kong and she asked him about Taiwan and he pretended he hadn't heard the question and then just literally hung up on her. And in less than a week after that dope to Ted Ross was asked in a briefing by CNN whether or not attacks from the likes of Donald Trump harmed the credibility of the WHO and himself at a time when they specifically need this credibility all over the world and he didn't mention that is all he then came out this quite remarkable claim that he's been the target of a racist online campaign for the past three months and that is coming from Taiwan. Where are those attacks coming from than if indeed there are attacks the thing is you look online? It's the Internet. There is unsavory stuff everywhere and of course. China has this fifty cent army which is a group of Internet users who are actually paid by governments local governments often to spread information that is beneficial to the Chinese state. And why fifty cents. It's very cheap. And so the resulting product you get from. That is also often largely ineffectual. So here we have this case. We've got this terrible disease. It's killed way over one hundred thousand people worldwide. Aren't there more important things that we should all be focused on right now? Well not for an authoritarian communist government. Perception is reality and since the the PR spin of this is being very integral to China's campaign In combating the virus being very very sensitive about it being linked in any way to Wuhan or to China which in in subways is absolutely understandable Samson. What's the biggest lesson we can take away from? Taiwan's handling of the disease. Well I think number one full the United States and Western Europe now. They had weeks if not months to prepare for this and they didn't learn the lessons from what Asia's democracies and China in certain cases did to contain this virus. I'm actually listening a while ago to your fascinating conversation with the rich Howard from the Howard Institute and what he said about the importance of finding local solutions to work for local communities and empowering and inspiring people from all walks of life to participate in the solutions that affect them and that really resonated with me. Because you can see that in so many aspects of Taiwan's fight against this disease while the government absolutely has played its role with early intervention and clear communication and high level expertise it's attitude to openness has been absolutely key in bringing people on side and more importantly allowing them to take an active role in fighting this crisis one of the worst aspects of crisis. Is that feeling of being imported. The you can't do anything about it. You've just gotTa sit there. Wait for it to be over. And that creates all kinds of anxieties and people but at Taiwan's case because it was an open transparent and it has this long tradition of civic what we call civic tech where people at the public largely try to adapt solutions from the technology via in the public. Good not just profit but in the public good and Taiwan citizens have been able to get together take the day to the government has provided them and turn into something practical and useful. Samson Ellis Taipei bureau chief for Bloomberg News. Thanks very much for joining us and giving us your perspective on Taiwan's fight against corona virus before our conversation. Jim Has a recommendation Richard. I've been reading one of those books that you hear about your whole life. But you've never actually read a book called Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Which is a classic of mental literature by Annie Dillard and it's about a year. She spent living in remote part of Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains and basically just taking walks around her little house and sit on the banks of a creek and observing nature and thinking about the universe. And it's a kind of thing that a guy like you would think might find sort of annoying and I just absolutely love it. I'm just blown away by her writing in it's funny and it's deep but also at a time like this. It's so nice just to read something about the joy of life and the planted in nature and not to be thinking about everything else. That's going on around us. So I couldn't recommend this more pilgrim at Tinker Creek. I found the Taiwan example inspiring. Here we have a a feisty democracy right off the coast of China with only four hundred cases of Corona Virus. And just six deaths as of the middle of this week It's also a country where people largely trust the government and seemed to be okay with the kind of technology on contact tracing and surveillance That has been needed to help. Taiwan through this health emergency one wonders though whether the US which is so much more culturally and racially diverse Would be a place where this would work as well One other thought about a Taiwan is that it does have a single payer universal healthcare system and perhaps that is really helped it a combat this corona virus although There are many other countries with single. Payer universal healthcare systems that have not done nearly as well But to that point a friend of our family whose Mexican American and lives in New York was telling me just this past few days that his uncle died of corona virus and had been reluctant to see a doctor because he was worried about the cost of treatment. I think that when the worst of this pandemic is over there's going to be a renewed and perhaps even stronger debate over health care accessibility and cost. There's no question that the reluctant people get tasked. Not just the shortage of test but the obstacles that were put in people's way and cost is a major one are something that we're really going to have to look at. So I'm I'm with you on that. I may not agree with you ultimately about the solutions. But there's a real problem here and that's the debate we're GONNA have to come back to in future episodes but right now. I think one of the big lessons from Taiwan is the benefit of being an outsider. They're not part of the UN. They're not part of the IMF they're very close to China and don't trust China so they were extremely sceptical about everything. They heard coming from China about corona virus. I suspect that if China said. Oh it's all under control at Taiwan health officials were probably already zipping up. There has matt suits you know but I think there's a lesson here for all of us is don't just go along with the crowd if something if there's subtle signs or growing signs of a problem there's a lot to be said for for stepping outside the consensus. Yeah it's not a member of the World Health Organization and tried to warn the world but the message didn't get through properly this whole story with the world. Health Organization is blowing up right now with trump now threatening to de fund the American contribution in the World Health Organization which I think is is misguided. The leadership aside. They do a lot of very important work all over the world. I'm sure all the medical people at who are are pretty upset with what's going on. But the fact is the leaders of the organization have allowed themselves to be dragged into this bizarre political battle where they won't even acknowledge the existence of Taiwan practically they. They've tried to help China with their propaganda that they did such a great job of controlling corona virus. Clearly all you have to do is look around the world and see that patently untrue and so they have brought great distrust upon down upon organization that needs trust.

"Style Dui Y.. U. E. N. E. N.. Yeah Yeah and so this is actually a very small gates that remains the days so it was built in eighteen thirty eighty five and now the only thing can find is literally dot gates once she entered the gates. There's tons of shops and unique places to see a lot of the Architecture from the olden days are inspired by falsely so the gates was placed in this location because of answering okay that you had to have the gate face this direction because it would be bad luck for it to face a different direction right so he wants to have a west facing prosperity. Disparity got it. Okay I didn't know the details there. Yeah there's a lot of places or buildings you'll find in China. The House unique locations. I might say because of the People's beliefs in helping out here a little bit. If it faced West it would be prosperity if it faced. I self it would be. I don't know I'm not sure about south. I just asked because my house is South so pick up. It's absurd. You might have to ask the master for that temples mentioning earlier could you temple. It also has the story behind its locations. So tionna is known asked US city of the Phoenix which is an animal or creature that we think of as Bertie and luck and very magical kind of creature so could you temple is aimed at middle of the city city to capture and to keep a phoenix and to keep it locked to the people and after that one really famous place to check out code us. It's all green tunnel and sits as vowed as s ICAO and so. This is really known for being a Antezana Taiwan. I say that because it's lush green and says this waterway that takes you around and Tennessee annecy ecological sites so you mentioned that the city used to have a lot of different canals. Is this then one of the original canals yes. This was a man manmade canal that was I think during the Teen Dynasty and they used to transport sugar and other goods during the old times and so because because the water's really shallow usually travel on a bamboo raft and travel really slowly so now he can actually take same boat ride around canals. It's about half an hour ride and you have narration. Even though the narration is not as helpful for some of us as it might be eh show point to the left into riots and can see what creatures come up as she's pointing you get to where Bantu hats as well which is pretty cool okay. After the Green Tano another place to check out would be another temple which is code. Luhrman men chang-ho temple so there's a lot to spell here luminous spelled L. U. E. R. and E. N. it has a long history asphalt so everything has a story behind it. Which is why I find so fascinating and with this particular temple? There's actually a debates Asked to which one is original again because the original temple was those back in I believe a sixteen hundreds with the earlier establishment Bushman of China. And so there was a flood in the eighteen hundred s talk destroyed original temple and other statues religious objects it's were displaced throughout the city and so this particular tempo actually has I believe two locations now and each of them claims seems to be the original because they hold certain facts or certain but just object. Okay so there's the Lerman Matsu temple. Aw what's the other one. I think the one I mentioned as dot one ten whole is not suit in in in Chinese. If you go you might my be able to see religious ceremonies taking place so it's actually quite scary because there's a lot of noise going on. They have firecrackers the a half people being the instruments. So it's a bit overwhelming. But it's really cool to see because they'll be a shaman or someone doing ceremony the and they'll think trust dancing around and waving a baton really interesting to see we should say we haven't put this into any number of days days with this at all. Is it one day's itinerary so far so do you know roughly. How many days worth of sightseeing? We just did here. I would would paces in one or two days. You don't want to overwhelm south too much with that. So there's tons to doing on as well so you can easily stay for a week the close together because it sounds more than just two days worth so far. There's a lot here. Yeah Muslim places on mentioned the food options or award tempos that all in city centres so he can easily walk to them or you can take the buses fall an interesting way to get around as through the bike so we have a bike sharing system in China. It's called a T. bike so you can find a station on any street corner and you can and boral bike for half an hour for a whole day with your credit card. Okay in the APP for that. Is there an English option for the APP that we need for the I believe so. I was able to find the website anger so there should be an English version of the APP as well. Yeah I am seeing the English website. Perfect for everybody. Who is trying to listen to the show and write down notes because you're planning on doing detained on irony did that? And so we'll have all these things as always in both the lyrics and the show notes of this episode of the amateur dot com website terrific onto our on next destinations and other place that I discovered upon chance. And it's really interesting to see is a village right Ryan next to the Macho Temple actually okay and makes for a good spot kind of car on the way in Taipei. There's a really really famous cat. Village people go all the time this the China version I guess so. It's really rundown looking village and dates back to colonial times on the Japanese occupation. Okay it used to be dormitory for a factory here. In China Call Mine is what I'm reading coal. Mine okay I I think I read something about petrochemical so it used to be a factory dormitory for the staff and because the factory closed down so now I guess inhabited the by more than people. Yeah so it can just fine cat's sleeping around or lying the middle road and it's really adorable. Who says a lot about the spirit of Tai non? It's very slow pace. It can enjoy yourself in the sun just like the cast down very lazy and Really Chill Hill and this is who tong kept village. That was what I'm seeing the report. Sorry this is the one. I talked about in Taipei Taipei. Sorry sorry sorry got it okay. The Tena One dozen actually happening so you can probably find that despite going tie can village but it won't all be very obvious where exactly.

"The force is a very interesting place at checkout and then then after that I recommend doing some tour of the religion in China so as famous for its temples calls it has the most number of tempos in one. Oh one good one to check out his Co. Puji Temple and this is the center of town find a nestled in between small streets fuego during Chinese New Year. You'll I find it really an amazing display of lanterns chempil. So the lanterns are painted and crafted by. Oh wishers they you just want to make their own lantern and to write on their own wishes but in other times of the year you can also find prayer card tight trees around the temple so he can make a wish and how that kind of in the temple as a blessing. When you mentioned Chinese New Year I think many people who are listening new the Chinese new your moves around a bit? It's lunar. I don't remember when it is here in twenty twenty. Yeah I have to look as well. It's Saturday January. January twenty fifth in two thousand twenty. Okay so we're talking. In general in the in the winter months January ish is when we're GONNA find Chinese New Year and you mentioned that it's warm all year round. Is there a best time of year to go to China. Because it's really warm. In the summer month I recommend going in winter or spring so actually actually December typically tend to be dry and vault. Hopefully mellow weather. OKRA and Chinese New Year might be good timing okay. Great Kiana on a Cedar festivities and the mobile are people but yeah that's part of the experience. The smartest way to hire welcome back before the break we were talking about how popular the Taiwanese system is and it makes sense. People in Taiwan are are living longer because of their national health insurance. But this popular and successful program isn't perfect right now has two big problems. The first problem is one that every healthcare system is dealing with healthcare costs. Keep going up and on top of that. There's the wild cost of new niece drugs. For example take the case of Lee j interest is seeing movie and also. It's my major. Uga is twenty five. She majored in communications. And she loves Titanic Classic Jack Especially like that scene at the end where roses on the door. Oren jackets frowning. She says it hits you right in the feelings. And that's what. She majored in communications to do. Because I think it's very hard you talk about vowed Experience or details of your life by we can use the movie videos to show audience. The all story insured time. That's why she's written song lyrics like the song you're hearing now and book all about her experiences with a disease. It's called spinal muscular atrophy. We asked her to translate translate. It's a homework from me but loosely translated. The song is like her book about overcoming obstacles because of the Jays disease. She can't walk doc. She can't move her limbs much or open mouth very far and she asked to make decisions like will she sit in a wheelchair to talk to reporters which is maybe more dignified or will oh she s. She decided to do lying bed. Because it's easier to talk even taking shower sleeping eating. I have so many yes. Well sometimes life is difficult a few years ago. EJ found out about a new drug. It seemed like it can make a real difference if not for her then for people in earlier stages of disease but it's super expensive. The first year is seven hundred fifty two thousand dollars. US for one year for one patient. Wow it's too expensive for for Taiwan's national health insurance to cover. That's hard for ye j knowing that the medicine exists. But she can't have it so she thought you know what I wrote a book. I write lyrics lyrics all right the government a letter to give the reporter fish. It's a smart way to do that because major incoming incoming occasion I know how do you see her letter got attention. She told us. The government officials came to her home and the President President of Taiwan called her. They say they will try their best. There's a committee that meets to discuss the budget for National Health Insurance Doctors and hospitals and drug companies and government officials. They all come together to talk about things like covering new drugs and no matter how compelling and funny and sick Nick Legia is we have limited financial resources and limited capability. This is Dr Societa Chang. He's a researcher. Her studies healthcare but he's also served on that Budget Committee. We went to meet him at his office National Taiwan University and he told us that the reason that drugs like Lee Jay's aren't covered but right now is that healthcare costs keep rising. The Taiwanese health insurance just can't afford the new staggering costs some treatments in fact he says the National Health Insurance System can't necessarily afford the services. They're covering right now. This is the second big problem one. That's more specific back to Taiwan's healthcare and it's a problem that Societa Chang has been studying since nineteen ninety five when national health insurance. I passed so we published a paper. That's my first. I paper the best so far in that very first paper two decades ago so she has studied the elderly. He wanted to see what happened when you made healthcare cheaper And easier to access before the new system the annual number of physician visits about five six times but after is jammed to like doc tell visit which means the elderly started going to the doctor twice as much once they got healthcare. Good that I don't know I think this is the hospital. We actually wanted to see this for ourselves across the street from societas office. There's a beautiful red brick hospital. It looks more like a New England college building than a medical facility inside. There's a tile atrium here's registration and there's the pact registration area where people take little tickets and then waiting chairs for their number to be called. Israeli is like a DMV wander around every hallway every waiting room. We we see. They're all teeming with people haven't necessarily spent a ton of time in the hospital but this seems like just bustling right most of the time. It's very crowded was lotto patient and walk kind of be like you taking a two in the supermarket. Social Associate tells us that under Taiwan's National Health Insurance Co pays are so low and healthcare is so affordable that people use a lot more of it. That's a problem because it drives up costs us and because it puts a lot of training providers and when we reached out to Taiwan's doctors union the doctors. They put us in touch with agreed people come in for every little thing. The doctors told us it's overwhelming. We're not marvel superheroes one of them complained. Personally I feel that the patients in Taiwan or kind of spoiled by the system share people of their healthcare. So she says but that's because patients are getting too sweet of a deal. I I believe we are too kind to our patient which is not a good thing actually is not. You probably shouldn't run for political office on that message. Acids die right away jokes aside. A lot of people are worried when we talked to the guy who currently runs the national health insurance. He told us that things have to change. And the guy who used to run the national health insurance also told us that something has to be done. He predicted that if nothing nothing changed the system would go bankrupt in ten to fifteen years and our researcher was even less optimistic in two years. Yes ten to fifteen years. No no normal. Wow so why is nobody talking about how to to prevent that. Nobody's talking about because it's election year. Who will take the hot potato? No candidate they're nasty a be right so they were to pretend well. I am not the Knicks breasts and yet I'm going to worry about that later but this is where the really high support number might be good after all even are pessimistic researcher admits that if patients love system this much. They'll fight to keep it they. They will adjust. I believe so one of the doctors. We spoke to said that in the. US patients are in how and the providers he believes are in heaven in Taiwan he said the patients are in heaven and the providers are overwhelmed with too many patients coming in there in. How obviously Ed this is an oversimplification going? Forward Taiwan is going to have to find a balance away to bring everyone down to Earth. That could be done a couple of different ways either are you are willing to pay more as a premium or you're willing to pay more as a copayment. Taiwan might also have to create more situations like clearly jazz where the government tells patients. I'm sorry for the good of everyone. We just can't cover.

"The story soon. May Chang also known as May grew up in Taiwan raised by parents passionate schnitt about social issues rubbed off and the nineteen sixties. She moved abroad for Grad school at Yale by the way. That's the best way to meet your future future spouse because you're exposed to the same intense atmosphere. Let me half of the time you scared to death. Gale is in fact where may met her future spouse. She was sitting in a library studying. I was taking an economics course and I had a question may was struggling ogling with all these dense theories of economic development. And a guy named who've reinhard another Grad student saw her sitting by herself he came over an offer to help. She explained her question and then he said you know I have just a write paper for you. But it's in my place. So he says you know we can go. Get it was a charmer. They went back to his place. The ambiance was fantastic. Made May Jasmine tea and he put on music. Who's Beethoven and then? He lit a fire in the fireplace and we discussed the paper. They also talked about themselves. Ova told her about his childhood in postwar Germany. Living with his family they lost their house and they found day little tool shed in the countryside. So they moved there. It was the mother and grandmother and five little children. There was no. Oh how water. No heat no electricity and in the wintertime. When the wind blew the cold came in you know they would wake up with a sheet of ice on their chest? Because they're they're breath the would come out and then would freeze into ice. That was sit on their chest but one thing they all had. He and his siblings was healthcare. When we were paupers? My family we had health insurance like everyone else in Germany. I've never forgotten that. This is speaking decades later in two thousand nine on fresh air with Terry Gross. He since passed away but as interview review makes clear his childhood inspired a lifelong passion. Making sure that everyone had access to healthcare and I would like the American American people to have what I had in my mother had as a kid so that is why I care. That is why I care. Those were his is words. That is why I care. It's also why in the nineteen eighty s UBA and may went to Taiwan. They wanted to help build a transformative formative new healthcare system in. May's home country one that would eventually give millions of Taiwanese people access to healthcare twenty five years later that the Taiwanese system is still in place and it looks a lot like a pitch. Were hearing from presidential candidates here in the United States. We have got a pass a medicare for all all single payer system. I'm with on Medicare for all Medicare for Medicare for all program.

"Frightened of China. The vast majority of countries in the world will never let the president of Taiwan visit America is big enough and strong enough that it doesn't care and does let them visit even America has to be unbelievably careful about the kind of the tiny details of what flag flag is flying all the people she's allowed to visit so it's a real kinda vestige of cold war oddity around this otherwise perfectly normal friendly little country simply because China insists that everyone treats them that way and what is that saying when is hoping to accomplish with American visit in theory. This is a visit to some of her allies. Taiwan's still has seventeen countries which recognize Taiwan have full diplomatic relations <hes> they're mostly small very poor countries in the Caribbean central in America. She's going to visit for them this time and the front and the back of that car opinion tool the Americans are allowing her to visit this is a moment when support for Taiwan is very strong both in Congress and with some senior officials in the trump administration so you so only this week the American government announcing over two billion dollars worth of arms sales to Taiwan which always makes China across because America will it doesn't recognize Taiwan as a country is Taiwan security guarantor basically if China were to invade vade Taiwan America should Taiwan hopes be there but side and yet any visit to America by Taiwanese leadership is going to enrage China and has again. Would it would have how they responded so far so it's been relatively sort of boilerplate. Language from the Foreign Ministry and you've seen complaints in tossing in the state media one very nationalist state newspaper suggested that if these weapons which are basically tanks and missiles are delivered Taiwan that may be China should offer to do bomb them and destroy them unless they're removed that kind of Cuban missile crisis style scenario doesn't seem to be getting play elsewhere these visits they are weirdly serious business. It was back in the nineteen nineties that had an earlier Taiwanese president it was allowed to give a speech at his Alma Mata Cornell University and China launch gigantic missile tests that actually brought to American aircraft carrier battlegroups into the Taiwan Strait so these are these are high stakes but this also comes at a time when mainland China will have been rattled quite a bit by the protests in Hong Kong. I mean what connection do you see between to rest of regions that the mainland takes interest in Hong Kong is a very different case from Taiwan. It is absolutely legally part of China Taiwan is not part of Communist China never has been but what happens in Hong Kong is watched very closely in Taiwan blues protests. Were really a rejection in Hong Kong of the idea that autonomy offered by Beijing under the slogan One Country Two Systems is working very well. Oh that resonates in Taiwan because China's big offer to the Taiwanese is that they can also have one country two systems if they'll agree to come under mainland China's control they could have lots of autonomy so protests involving a million or more people people in the streets of Hong Kong or a dark warning sign to Taiwan that one country two systems might not be all that it's cracked up to be and we've seen that playing out as Taiwan enters election season because Taiwan unlike Hong Kong long unlike mainland China is a proper democracy with big boisterous elections and in this season tying when the incumbent president has actually seen a bit of a boost in her poll numbers because she was pretty tough and outspoken defending the right of Hong in Congress to protest and saying this shows that we can't trust China's offer of autonomy to the extent that her conservative rivals she's going to have to run against for the presidency who are normally very keen on in closer links with China making money by seeking to link the two economies. They actually had to say some unusually tough things about the mainland just to kind of keep themselves in good shape public opinion. Another complicating factor is that America is in this pitched the trade war battle with China surely entertaining the Taiwanese president is going to add tension to that. It is really hard to know what the trump administration's Taiwan policy is. There are a bunch of very senior people around president trump who are lifelong supporters of Taiwan and you can see their influence in his arm sales and probably in this longer visit president trump himself seems not to have a great interest in the fact that Taiwan is democracy. He's famously not very interested in the fact that countries our allies thinks allies as as a burden and so he has been very careful not to use Taiwan as a bargaining chip in these trade talks but it all adds up to the fact that nerves are jangling in Beijing on so many fronts so why should American voters care about Taiwan if they care about China having the right to dominate the whole of the Western Pacific they should certainly care about Taiwan military planners naval admirals they talk about the first island chain especially Japan Taiwan and then down into the Philippines which kind of acts as a kind of barrier that hems in the entire Chinese coastline and for the last several decades the American navy has been able to use that island chain as a barrier to basically Hem China in and to give America free rein. Over the whole of the Pacific having Taiwan as unsinkable aircraft carrier for America right in the middle of that island chain is incredibly important and so what's your view on the likelihood that America's policies around attitude towards Taiwan will change inch American policy is changing to different directions in Congress and in the Pentagon as China becomes more potent military power the either of having Taiwan as a base close to China to kind of Hamilton is increasingly important and president trump is someone who is scornful of the idea of alliances not very interested in the idea that allies are democracies and so you know who knows the deepest fear of the Taiwanese is the president trump they could wake up and he's sold them for a couple of ships soybeans. What about those Taiwanese people? How do they view this visit for example and Messiah being on the on the world stage and the dangers that might present Thomas very divided sauce so her supporters will be pleased to see her getting a good welcome in America that will be a relief the sign that America is on their side? There's another whole half of the country that blames her for provoking China that would be willing to have a closer relationship with China if that keeps them safer and improves the economy frankly and we're heading into an election election in Taiwan and a few months time. She's currently not very popular generally.

They pushed the idea, very hard, and they can go that will find all sorts of way. And it's been decades kind of let go. That's why I wished I could stop and see that they're all the possibility. Early the next morning, Andrew, nice scooter apartment building in Taipei on the twelfth floor we walk into a place called tone to hotline, the hotline is an inclusive LGBT Hugh center that runs all kinds of programs for the queer community Taipei, and it's literally in an apartment, there are posters of different queer Asia movies on the wall. And we sit down in the cozy living room the center runs a hotline for people who have come out and there's also a hotline for their parents. I'm the go on my mind, Andrew, and I meet wall, mama wall is her last name and mama means mom mama has been volunteering at the hotline for fourteen years. She says that when her kid was first coming out, she and her husband, had trouble finding information we're all looking very, very hard for those information internet. Then there's no lying or our Facebook sixteen seventeen years ago when he can out. He was very young. So how can we expect him to know anything concrete? So we have to do all of Mark. The he come out as trans transgender then no, no. I sit y'all less being almost like a T, definitely a t t our boys drive a few years later, he came out as trans while mama has been volunteering at the hotline ever since with what makes hard for people, you know, some parents for Chinese parents, we still believe that children are our property. So we will do all the decisions for them. Buy houses for them. Protect over protect sometimes, and we have the control freak heads. Whatever the had a copter, parents over. We are probably not like that. But still, the, the source society the, the pressure are different because they're judging the parents. I how come you like that? How do you think a kid can come out to their, their parents? Like what is the easiest way to do that? So they understand five steps out how their star. That's right. A ladder. I Wayne was the first time you realize you're different really early as early as facile. So, you know, you force, the parents, now this is not the outsider is now the what school, you're a or of the friends, you're dealing with the problem become the problem started really, really early in their lives and second wing, you confirmed your Riddick different confirmed confirm. You have certain steps yourself through now. Your, you're your check you try different ways. And you blame the classmates, or the movies or everything your kids do that a lot along. But at certain foreign, you're confirmed like you're, you're desperate is all I have. No or made you. No one can help me. I'm definitely that kind of person that date year. The tell your parents, then the third, it's like the history of your out, ubt life like what happened, you have tried the opposite sex. You have boyfriend girlfriend, many things you have went to the doctors you do into line and things like that. Like a history, also telling the parents, this, no eo can now fours is your now. What happens now you're twenty eight or thirty five you have a boyfriend girlfriend, and what you're really seeing yourself, you have already addressed to your orientation, and tell your parents happy and have a partner in what I'm going through. And the fifth most important. What's my futures? Look like now I wanna get married. I wanted to have cats dogs or babies. Very PIN's live plans is really important. So your parents who say all my, my kids were still a low in, and he would die alone. Have a very scary picture, seeming their mind. You have to know I have my own plans for my future rather, ladder in favor really lays aegis rise five cents. "L started in actually it goes back to nineteen forty nine Quin Taiwan in China. We're still kind of fighting internally and then going down KMT lost the battle with a communist party, and then retreated from Mellon China to Taiwan, and it was during that time about Taiwan star to kind of grow. And also a lot of major constructions. And the roads highways airports were being built after nineteen forty nine when China was occupied by commenced party, and in one thousand nine hundred seventy nine China pushed you when to recognize one China. Where the official China at the time was still Taiwan, which is Republic of China, which is different than People's Republic of China, which is today's men than China, so Taiwan or our see Republic China was forced to leave the UN and ever since then we were sort of in this ambiguous. State. Taiwan is not recognized by the UN as a member of states. But we have our own government monetary system. Our economy our military. So I would say our official title is Republic of China. Our see? But today, I have a vision for Taiwan to become Republic of crypto currency, which is also our see in a future. So and so that's kind of short crash course of the Taiwan's history. Yeah. So Taiwan is a democracy. Is it a parliamentary system or is it more like the United States? It's yeah. So this is what you say, surely what's differentiates Taiwan Minin, China Taiwanese democracy. We promotes the freedom of speech and human rights and democracy system. So our system is hybrid of parliamentary system and presidential system. We directly elect our president and then president appoint a premier which is equivalent of prime minister, and then premier Assam bows. The cabinet members and ministers and on a powder, mentally side. We have one house, which is Hungary thirteen members and we now have four parties representing the legislature. There's a ruling party Democratic Progressive Party DP, which all sixty seats of the current legislature. And there's KMT the previous volume party which I belong to right now, which owns. Thirty five seats, and then you have Neil power party, which is a newly minted party after the sunflower student protests movement in two thousand fourteen they have four members in the legislature, and you have people's power party, which is kind of break away from the old KMT. They also have three seats in the legislature. So together, we have one hundred thirteen seats and is similar to the US as chicken balanced system. So the legislature has the right to oversee and supervise budget approval elected law amend the law and questioned the cabinets on their policies and essential and the executive branch, which is led by the premier is responsible to the legislature and also answers to president as well. Our system is somewhat complicated. But I would say it's a similar system to the French system and the Korean system. Taiwan is actually a pretty progressive plays. Taiwan has a woman president the first place in Asia to legalize gay marriage. And there's a universal healthcare in Taiwan. Is that correct, correct? Yeah. That's amazing. So with progressiveness now, you're pushing for crypto currency like a little island in Asia. I where did your inspiration in your personal passion for crypto currency come from basically sort of grew up in a kind of marginalized part of society, which is a nine market some of those looking for ways to be creative. And also to kind of make it a my all comedians define what is a night market. I know what make market is you do. But I don't know if the listeners do a ho K so in Taiwan, we have this special kind of market nights. And it's normally going from six PM. Two two AM in the morning where bunch of Stolz they come out in the setup there stands and selling food, or, you know, sending some products, and it's very entrepeneurship, and everyone, you know, can set up a stand there, and then can grow their businesses and a lot of a system retail chain stores stars on nine markets, and you know, and it's sort of a spirit of Taiwan's entrepreneur and kind of attitude. Yeah. So I grew up in that environment. My mom owns beauty parlor in a nine market..
