Barrier Island Prepares for More Sea-Level Rise, Worsening Storms

"Teague island is known for its beaches hiking birdwatching and wild horses the uninhabited island off of maryland. And virginia's coast drew almost two and a half million visitors last year but acid sands are shifting underfoot when a storm hits. Strong winds and waves can carve inlets into the island and change the shape of beaches and storm. Surges can wash sand from the ocean side beach farther inland so over time. The island shifts. The northern portion of the island has moved about a half mile to the west in about the last forty years. Hugh hawthorne is superintendent of acid island national seashore. He says some movement is normal but as sees rise and storms get more intense. The rate of change is speeding up so the park service is working to adapt. Its facilities is now making restrooms and lifeguard towers portable so they can be moved to new locations as the island shifts. And hawthorne's says the park. Service plans to relocate. Its oceanside campground farther west. The island may change the way we manage. It may change but we expect acetate island national seashore to be here for a time.

"So I was one fair port dad to the Superintendent Relative to Daniel prude today a lawyer for the seven suspended officers going to stand up with the locust club and lay out in black and white literally the training regulations or whatever you call it of the Rochester Police Department and contrast those directly with what took place that night again, you and I spoke from the very first day that video is out there about what transpired on Jefferson Avenue I personally don't think that the way the officers acted is the way that I would've acted or a compassionate person would have however. It is obvious that the physical tactics that were used one was to hold down his head. The other was to place a need between his shoulder blades, both of those tactics. Are trained exactly that way by the Rochester Police Department these officers had been told by their department in this situation, this is what you do. Right and we reported on this program the Rochester Police Department adapted those techniques into their mandatory training and their standard of best practice after those techniques were approved by the State Office that oversees law enforcement agencies The boss of that Mike Green former Monroe County district attorney. So those officers that night and again i. Again I'm I nobody to second guess but you and I all looked at that and said, why didn't they just put him in the COP car? Why didn't they put a blanket on him? Why don't they watching better as he's being restrained? Why is nobody Mutt? We got all that. We mostly of US agree on that. But but the point is the actual things that were done in that situation. How do you restrain a person under those circumstances? These officers did exactly what they were trained to do. Right, and if if that wasn't the right thing to do and we can have that discussion of course, and I can understand a lot of different viewpoints on that. But if that wasn't the right thing to do, that's not on the officers. That's on the city of Rochester and. and. Because the city of Rochester Police Department adapted those two restraint techniques after they were approved by the state of.

Oh, no, this is open because my Alameda put my family on his by like giving my brother. His favorite thing was the by close dragon. And I was like wait. Is this legal? He's just like you know they just there. And I was like what they belonged to someone at first, and he was like well. Maybe they don't want. Mayo brother needs to fight. After the show I would give you all co-ordinates. Because he probably about when. Listen! I need to hit him up and be like so where do I do? If. I got a buyback. My designer clothes so. I mean he would have cheaper to the first time. I'm just be straight with my own blog. Look, I'm Gosto machine now. How much to get it back? We're GONNA. Keep the COPS additives I'll. Just you know one on one right there like you black. You're always going to keep the cops out of it I'm like. that. Okay. Y.. A white woman. By the time you get here I, will be white. While you're checking and doll American. Dog. My. Shirts. So thirty three thousand dollars worth of his local dry cleaning I mean money will spend, so you get your clothes back? And for fifty thousand dollars in flights to London just specifically owned Oh. Wow aggie at home i. don't know Susan across the pond yet. He must have Coz in different. Area Codes for shellfish Oh he's. Postal codes. NFL found. Fifty six thousand, six, hundred forty five dollars of the schools funds. He used to pay a Manhattan weight. Loss Dr Frank was also. What an Oprah's out here, giving y'all meal plans for like thirty I listen. I'm just GONNA stay. Thicken delightful. It take. Do I, mean right. You know so much of our weight loss culture is rooted fat phobia, but I'm like. Is this a good scam to get part of because it was he that fad after fifty fifty six thousand dollars later. Steal your car, information, information and stuff like so people have been. I remembered at I remember that and they keep elevating as much as we get ahead of them. You know the scam. Industry constantly evolves, and that's why I love it. The ingenuity. You know what I'm talking about. Like just right, right? Motivating right so if you guys are out there and you need to charge your phone. Just check out the cable. I maybe just bring Dude I do. It is laugh to keep from being depressed right literally. That's why black people are constantly laughing I, know this the guys I do just have to mention this. Woman Amy Cooper. That twitter ruined her life. Yes man shot. Kubat ruined her own life. Her all life. Yes, but the twitter really took it upon itself to make sure that it was extra ruined and. Not just gotTa say shadow to whoever found out where she adopted that dog and contacted the dog. If you haven't heard the story, there was a white woman in Central Park. They're calling her central park. Care her name's Amy Cooper. She is a scammer and an excellent voice over actress She needs to be as somebody's booth immediately she does. Talent jumped out. It really did She was in the ramble in Central Park. If that's a familiar place for you with her, Cocker Spaniel, the leash the leash laws state that she'd. The dog needs to be on a leash It was disturbing bird watching areas. That bird watchers were trying to you know. Get a bird on watch birds I. Don't know what. Seems very thank. They probably related. It's probably some ancestry dot com like Somebody looks. Somebody's ancestor owned right into. So. So he asked her politely to put the dog on a leash. Of course the Casati jumped out, and she immediately put her Karen Wig and decided to call the police on this man, and he started filming her. She said I'M GONNA call the police and I. "Get the superintendent on to get him on the record about what their plans are what the intentions are what they're hoping to achieve you heard that he was you know upbeat about the fact that they had up to forty plus thousand students connecting in one way or the other this sometime earlier this week of course there are a hundred and eighty nine thousand students in the system and my understanding is that many of those connections were you know maybe for one class at a time forty five minutes or so I you've got kids who are looking to get a full school day and right now and my understanding is you're not getting it and the superintendent acknowledges that he says we're not where we need to be and that we need to get where we need to be and I want you to expand on that discussion a bit more here as we now have the superintendent taking full responsibility on the record saying what he's doing and what he hopes to do well how does that square with your experience right now as a parent of children in that school system let's start with can in Fairfax go ahead can your first up on WMAL yes hi he there's an aspect to this I didn't hear address the think is very important because in addition to some of the you know sort of Danticat's specs with advocates for the roles filled by our schools engine preparing our young people to have the proper attitudes and behaviors the good citizens of our society to understand the need to respect for others the socialization aspect the school they're not going to be you know presented its appearance with these distance learning I mean if the messages to get our students understand the need to respect other students of different beliefs yeah you know transgender students of respect different choices that people make to understand our pain and the need to protect it and save it yeah I thought that the school provides the student it's an important warning I'll be honest with you right now I think the priority needs to especially for this extraordinary circumstance the priority should definitely be the basics I think if they can get the basics done that would be a miracle given the challenges they've had and then maybe they can expand on that but I gotta be honest it can thank you for the call as a parent who has had children in public schools in parochial schools and the and the I a home schooled my children I've done all of the above and to me frankly teaching my children respect for others teaching my children respect for other faiths teaching my children our compassion for other individuals and what often gets put under this umbrella of socialization it was never better than when hi and my children's mother were responsible for that instruction so that all of those things could be taught through the lens of our world view and our morals and all our ethics and I should hope that parents will take advantage of this opportunity to have their children with them so much at home that they will take that up because I'm openly I think that that is the primary responsibility of parents and if parents do that then we won't need the public schools to do it because sadly when public schools do they do it through there the lens of their world view and that doesn't always match many many parents world view and these are our children after all but I thank you for the observation very much so how about Matt's in southern Maryland we're talking about Travis county schools but let's face it everyone in the area is dealing with frustrations and roadblocks and speed bumps with their school district it's just been really heightened in Fairfax go ahead Matt you're on WMAL Hey well thanks for taking my call yeah I think you guys got the lead there for a second here's the here's the thing so it I heard you say that you have to look at kids may be being held back because of what their parents have decided to do I find that completely out of line no child this year should be held back because of the decisions that govern the governor has made whether it's Virginia Maryland it could be called into the matter well here's the thing they're going to find out that the numbers whether they're right or wrong they didn't warrant what's going on I know a lot of people are free to say this I've done the numbers I would argue it's only about.

"As interim superintendent. How would you define what your job or mission or task will be? You know, I think for me it's really thinking about the vision that set board and the mission that our board has established for our district. And then making sure that across our organization all of our work is aligned and coherence such a way. That's driving us to great outcomes for kids as it relates to the mission of our organization, which is like high quality education experience for our students that they leave productive citizens ready to leave lead lives that are fulfilling and be productive citizens in our community any major changes or things you plan to do a little differently like say, no every superintendent sort of has their own stamp not saying that the previous superintendent was bad by Detroit imagination, but everybody has their own sort of different leadership management priority styles. Yeah. I mean, I think you know, the board has been pretty clear on the path to progress that we're on now into, you know, generally, stay on that path. And so I think that will be a big part of my job. I also think though, there's an opportunity for us to really highlight the great things that are happening in IP s I think too often the amazing teachers and students. Just work happening in our schools gets overlooked in. So I really see me making efforts to make sure that we're highlighting the great stuff. That's happening in our district every day. I know one of the criticisms that ipads has gotten over the past year or so has been your partnership with the charters innovation schools and some people saying, hey, guys are in the pocket of the mind, trust, etc. View as a deputy superintendent, your job was oversee a lot of that any changes in that area. Or no modification going to keep moving forward. This partnerships. You know, what you also knows? We have a new board composition that'll be in place. Come january. And so I think for me it'll be looking to them to sort of see what their priorities are over. The course of this, you know, rest of the school year. I don't anticipate any, you.

So in this case, I'm the superintendent for both of those National Park Service conservation units. Is there any other reason why gates of the Arctic is set apart from the other parks will again, I, you know, I don't know how different we are for those parks that are off the off the road system. I, I will say that. Compiling the visitor use numbers for gauge. The Arctic is particularly challenging due to the fact that visitors are not required to register to get a permit. "Really uh she what's going on you know 'cause we get a lotta real odd moving parts and with fifty so modern police it doesn't take much for one person can make a mistake or something because it's not like cook in a burger in a in a in the kitchen where you get a redo there's no redo button for us if we screw something up you're going to see it and uh yep that's a problem with us with everything we do is on public display every day right or we make a mistake we got to catch it earlier we don't want to make that mistake so uh you know that's why i'm out there every day checking it out walk in it so you mentioned fifty employees do you you are there just different groups of people who are experts you have like bunker guys versus green guys or how does all that work uh we've got a uh yeah we're fortunate up here we we get to attract could could could guys i've got a great group of guys saw you know i've got a uh a bunch of guys who have turf degrees uh like myself i've so i've got a uh a a main superintendent i've got assistance i've got about seven or eight assists bench i've got uh interns turpin turns i've got to me i tease assistant and training so we got a really good team of all the turf came we call it that uh does all the chemical application as the fertilizer the hand watering out in a world where hand watering everything every day and they do all the technical stuff and then we have um you know the other cruised do um you know all the mowing in the bunkers and earn um all the other daily maintenance rahm.
