Hidden Histories - Rosewood, Tulsa, Chicago

"Halfway between Tampa and Tallahassee, a hundred yards off state route, twenty four and ten miles from the next town stands a handsome Pale Yellow House with decorative white trim on the two story porch. The house was the only survivor of an episode of such extraordinary violence that it boggles the mind how quickly and completely it was swept under the rug. An entire community was burned to the ground in an incident of racist asymmetrical warfare. And most people have never even heard of it. My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. The community had been or technically still is Rosewood, Florida. It was settled by both black and white people twenty years before the civil war, but the Jim. Crow segregation in the Post Bellum decades put a clear divide into the community. The town was incorporated in eighteen seventy after it got a post office on a train stop and was named Rosewood for the Pink Cedars that were also the base of its economy. Residents worked in lumber, yards, mills, and even a pencil factory. Until the cedars had been overharvested, and the factories began to close. Most of the white residents moved to nearby sumner. But one couple John and Mary right who ran the general store? They were kind to their neighbors, and were known to Slip Candy to the black kids who hung out at the store, possibly because their own children had died young. The white flight continued into the nineteen twenties when Rose Woods population of about two hundred was entirely black plus the rights. The little hamlet got by just fine. Until New Year's Day nineteen twenty-three. Over in Sumner, a woman named Fanny Taylor woke her neighbors, saying a black man had broken into her house and attacked her. Rather than alert sheriff, her husband immediately gathered a group of men. Including clansmen who were in the area for a rally and a tracking dog. the, dog, lead them to the railroad tracks, which led to Rosewood. The mob, which would grow to be three hundred strong got it in their head that they were looking for a black man named Jesse Hunter who had escaped from a chain gang. The dog ran through the open door of a house and back out with that of wagon tracks. When the homeowner swore that no one else had been in his house, the mob tied him to the back of a car and dragged him down a dirt road. Then they tracked down the owner of the wagon whose tracks the dog sniffed. When he also claimed ignorance and innocence, the mob mutilated and killed him. The mob came to the House of Sarah carrier the Taylor's laundries. Two dozen people most of them. Children were hiding inside having heard what was going on already driven out of their homes by fear. For whatever reason the mob was sure that carrier was hiding Jesse Hunter. They fired on the House and carrier. Sons returned fire. When it was over both Sarah and her son Sylvester carrier had been fatally shot, though Sylvester had managed to kill two of their assailants. Had, anyone bothered to talk to Sarah carrier about Fannie, Taylor. She would have been able to tell them about Taylor's lover. Her white lover who she had been with before the attack. As, the mob kicked in the front door of the carrier house, the people hiding inside fled out the back door to the relative safety of the nearby. Swampy Woods. Not. All were able to get away though. Carriers, other son James was found by the mob who reportedly made him dig his own grave before killing him. The newspapers of the nearby towns caught wind of what was happening. They ran exaggerated. Retailing's of the siege of the carrier House and blatantly false reports of roving bands of armed black citizens. Seeing that even more white men poured into Rosewood believing that a race war had broken out. Apparently it's only a race war when the race you're targeting fights back. The manhunt and terror campaign wasn't confined to that single night, but stretched on for nearly a week.

"Fell to his. Nearest able relative Congressman Brooks. So on May twenty second eighteen fifty six thirty seven year old. Preston Smith Brooks waited outside the Senate Chamber to ambush forty five year old Charles. Sumner Brooks's companion Lawrence. M keet was there to egging him on. Once Senate floor was free of ladies rooks barged in. He stopped over to Senator Sumners desk with the aid of his heavy. Cain Brooks would later give conflicting reports about this moment in some statements. He said he always intended to beat sumner on behalf of his second cousin in others. He says he only meant to give him a stern talking to and got carried away either way. He began by greeting sumner with the words. Mr. Sumner I have read your speech twice over carefully. It is a liable on South Carolina and Mr Butler who was a relative of mine. Sumner in an effort to acknowledge Brooks began to stand degree him before. Sumner could rise Brooks swung. His goal tipped cane and brought it down on his skull that I blow made. Sumner so disoriented. He fell back into his chair then instead of pushing his chair back to get away. He kept trying to stand with his knees. Still Stuck under the desk. Senate desks are bolted to the floor. It's clear. In retrospect that sumner was concussed from the Moment Brooks. I hit him. Once the beating began it didn't stop in under a minute brooks delivered. Thirty ferocious blows to sumners head face and body. A handful of southern senators. Goaded him on shouting. Go Brooks and give the damned abolitionist L. Acting on pure animal instinct and blinded by blood dripping into his eyes. Sumner ripped his bolted-down desk out of the floor boards but even that feat of strength wasn't enough to stop the beating Brooks wailed away at sumner until his canes splintered and broke apart in his hands even after Sumner collapsed unconscious brooks picked him up by his lapels to continue beating him. The South Carolina representative later insisted he didn't want to take sumners life. He chose the cane as his weapons specifically to avoid becoming a murderer. Perhaps that's true but brooks came within inches of beating a man to death all in defense of slavery the head Trauma Senator. Sumner suffered that day was severe in an age before. Mri is can't know exactly how bad his brain was damaged but he suffered severe headaches and nightmares for years. One doctor diagnosed him with spinal cord damage. He also endured extreme psychological distress after the attack. It's obvious through a modern lens that sumner had severe PTSD. He became so affected that he couldn't bear to enter the Senate chambers even after his physical wounds had begun to heal as for Preston Smith Brooks E. was the new hero of the American south. The Richmond Whig of pro slavery paper wrote a glorious deed a most glorious deed Mr Brooks of South Carolina administered to Senator Sumner a notorious abolitionist from Massachusetts and affects Ewell and classic caning. We are rejoiced. The only regret we feel is that Mr Brooks did not employ a slave whip instead of a stick. The Richmond Examiner even called for more violence against other senators writing. Good good very good. The abolitionists have been suffered to run too long without collars. They must be lashed into submission. If need be let us have a caning or cow hiding every day of course? Northern newspapers vehemently disagreed. The Boston be wrote. Brooks ought to be mercilessly. Kicked from one end of the continent to the other still back. Home Brooks was invited to parties across South Carolina in his honor. He was handed trophies for his treatment of Senator Sumner. An engraved silver goblet a silver serving platter there. At every event someone inevitably offered him a brand new. Cain to replace the one he'd broken over sumners head pretty soon brooks had so many canes. He ran out of room to store them. If being celebrated for beating a man half to death on the Senate floor bothered Brooks at all. He certainly didn't show it in his letters. He wrote to his brother that the fragments of the stick our big for as sacred relics he later added that it would not take much to have the throats of every abolitionist cut as for punishment. There was little brooks had been convicted of assault but only find three hundred dollars. He never served any time for the vicious attack while the Senate later appointed a select committee to investigate the matter. It determined that the Senate couldn't punish a congressman. It's only recommendation. Was that the House Expel Brooks on July Fourteenth. Eighteen fifty six. The House gamely took a vote on expulsion but it fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to expel a congressman with one hundred. Twenty one is ninety five as though the expulsion measure had a clear. Majority Brooks was embarrassed enough to resign. The next day on July fifteen the south wouldn't have its hero. Scorned in the special election held in South Carolina to fill his seat. Preston Brooks was sent straight back to Congress in November of eighteen fifty six. He was reelected for another full term. Rooks had everything and nothing is support in the South could keep him in Congress forever and yet. He was so unpopular in the north that he now feared for his life and refuse to travel through any free state feeling trapped. He weighed his options. He was approached by several of his friends. About potential positions within a succeeded confederate states of America he was even floated for confederate president. Someone suggested probably ingest making him emperor instead. If fate hadn't stepped in Brooks might well have been offered one of those positions when the civil war came but in January of fifty seven he developed a sudden and severe case of Croup viral throat infection. Despite his doctors best it's restaurants in Smith Brooks died in Washington D C on January twenty seven eighteen fifty seven at the age of thirty seven. He was celebrated by southerners in Death Justice he had been in life. Thousands turned out to pay their respects both in the nation's capital and at home in Edgefield South Carolina as for Charles Sumner. He might have been feted as a hero in the north if he'd healed enough to attend parties honoring him. But when Preston Brooks died. Sumner was just barely beginning to mend his head still throbbed but at least his wounds from the caning had stopped leaking pus though he was unable to return to the Senate Massachusetts reelected sumner his fellow. Republicans made sure that one seat sat empty for him on the chamber floor. It served as a nice visual point for rhetorical arguments about the uncivilized violence of southern us. It was a near miracle when in eighteen fifty nine almost three years after he was nearly killed at his desk. Sumner did finally return to the Senate colleagues warned him that he might be a target for Democrats looking to gain the same popularity as brooks still. He refused to tone down his abolitionist rhetoric in one of his first speeches after his return. Sumner shouted say Sir in your madness that you own the sun the stars the moon but do not say that you own a man endowed with a soul that show live immortal when the sun moon and stars of passed away today. Nearly no one would disagree with that statement but in eighteen fifty nine giving such a speech on the Senate floor went beyond political courage. Senator Sumner had real reason to fear for his life if he continued advocating for abolition. And he did it anyway in the years that followed both the deceased brooks and the living. Sumner suffered a fate familiar to anyone. Who's gone viral? They became symbols. Rather than human beings. Brooks was the Avatar of the south fed up with northerners and ready to fight. Sumner embodied the north preferring words to weapons yet. He was willing to endure violence. If necessary rather than give up his morals together they symbolize the irreparable divide between north and south and the inevitability of war essentially both men became means the first memes ever to start a civil war..

"This is number twenty seven the Brook Sumner affair. The closest thing to a murder ever to happen on the. Us Senate floor may twenty second. Eighteen fifty six thirty seven year old Congressman Preston. Smith rooks waited impatiently outside the doors of the Senate Chamber inside. Legislators gathered up their papers and made their way to the exits. But the man for whom Brooks was waiting remained stubbornly at his desk writing letters. It became apparent that if Preston Brooks wanted to see Senator Charles. Sumner have to do on the Senate floor. There were a few women in the Chamber That Day. Like a gentleman brooks waited until they left. He had things on his mind. He didn't want any ladies to hear or see eventually. The chamber was nearly empty. Only a handful of men remained including senator. Sumner Brooks made his move. He limped into the Senate chamber relying on his gold tipped. Hardwood came to keep him upright. Soon he was directly in front of Senator Sumners Desk. What happened next left? Sumner near death and the United States more divided than ever before. Welcome to political scandals. Two parties are so divided that they're willing to fight to the death. There tends to be a catalog of history between them yet for major wars. We almost always associate there beginning with particular inciting incident the assassination of Franz Ferdinand the Boston Tea Party Pearl Harbor September eleventh and in the case of the American civil war. The caning of Senator Charles Sumner. While the civil war officially began almost five years later the Brook Sumner affair pushed a divided. America has the point of no return if the two opposing legislators couldn't rise above violence then neither could the north and south one final note this episode includes discussions of slavery sexual abuse and assault. This material may be disturbing to some listeners. Much like the divisions between North and South the differences between Preston Smith Brooks and Charles. Sumner started years before they met on the Senate floor. Let's start with Charles Sumner who was born prematurely on six eighteen eleven in Boston Massachusetts. He and his twin were both born so weak that his mother separated them to give each baby a better chance at survival. Charles stayed with his mother while his twin Matilda was raised a wet nurse his father Charles Pinkney. Sumner was an attorney but his legal practice never really took off by the time. His preemies twins arrived. He was barely making a living as a father. He was strict and overbearing which was ironic given his moral standards. Were close to those of nineteenth century. Hippie he even famously published a poem criticizing slavery his anti-slavery views put the family constantly in the local spotlight so he expected his children to be as steadfast as possible. Charles spent his childhood laser focused on winning his father's approval which was a near impossible task. When Charles Junior focused on his studies is father complained in letters to friends that his son was quote somewhat deficient in strength. When he spent more time on exercise he was then admonished for missing classes. Growing up Charles couldn't relate to his siblings had no hobbies and rarely if ever dated he was nicknamed Gawky some nearby the few friends he did have when he started law school at Harvard. He made a few new pals among them. Were Future. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes and famed poet Henry Wadsworth longfellow. They appreciated sumners gift for oratory yet. His profound lack of social skills was unavoidable. Is Ignorance of humor and irony was downright painful home. Said if one told Charles Sumner that the moon was made of green cheese he would controversy the alleged fact in all sincerity and give good reasons why it could not be so by eighteen. Thirty four when twenty-three-year-old. Sumner was admitted to the bar for what we might today call a fragile ego. He was always convinced he was right and would argue for hours even the friendliest of teasing could shatter his composure. All this clearly embittered him. When his friends fell in love and married instead of congratulating them he complained about his own loneliness luckily for Sumner. It could channel his frustration into the next best outlet politics ironically given their terrible relationship. Sumner and his father did share political views. One year after his father died in one thousand nine hundred forty announced his desire to become an active abolitionist from that moment on Charles. Sumner was on a collision course with another future politician. Preston Smith Brooks of South Carolina as with Charles. Pinckney Sumner Whitfield. Brooks was unimpressed with his son. Preston though for different reasons the Brooks family owned multiple large plantations in South Carolina. Each one worked by dozens of enslaved people. They were expectations for a young man from a wealthy southern family and from a young age rest in was intent on Buckingham in Eighteen. Thirty seven at the age of eighteen. He left home to attend South Carolina College yet by eighteen thirty eight. You was suspended for menacing. Another student with his pistol during a fight Whitfield Brooks wrote in his journal. That Preston was quote deficient in moral energy and too indulgent in mere physical gratifications. He advised his son that quote. The spiritual man must overcome the Moore Corp. Preston didn't listen nor give up his corporal delights of drinking and raising hell in eighteen forty. The year. He turned twenty one. Someone told him falsely as it turns out that his brother was being unfairly held in prison. He rushed over to the jail without his firearm and threatened to shoot the sheriff. He did not according to the historical record. Threatened to shoot the deputy but lower often favors that version of the story. This time Preston was expelled from college. He would never receive a degree shortly after his expulsion. Preston learned that his cousin had been killed in a duel with a hot headed drunken lawyer named Louis. Wig Fall Southern White Masculinity then operated on a strict code of honor. If a man's family was harmed not retaliating was the ultimate act of cowardice so Preston challenged wig fall to a duel of their own. Dueling was technically illegal though still common so they made arrangements to meet on a tiny remote island in the Savannah River on the first shot both Preston and wiggle missed. They drew again and fired again. This time both men fell those watching. Couldn't tell for agonizing minutes if one both or neither was dead alas both men live but Preston was severely wounded in his left hip from that point on he had a permanent limb and used a heavy gold tip. Cain after this very public embarrassment brooks became even more desperate to prove his manhood. Six years later he got another opportunity in eighteen. Forty six when he was twenty seven. The Mexican American war broke out his cousin. A colonel in the South Carolina. Volunteers suggested he might be able to skip a few low ranks and join as a Captain Brooks accepted immediately the South Carolina. Volunteers got their name because none of the men were drafted. The earnings were meagre. Just seven dollars a month for a private a little under two hundred fifty dollars in two thousand twenty. It was nothing compared to the Brooks family plantations earnings but brooks was putting masculinity over money. He wanted to prove once and for all that he could fight like a man on the Long March to Mexico. Rooks didn't want to be treated differently because of his limp. He refused to ride in a wagon. Soon he became exhausted and contracted typhoid fever. Before even reaching all Varotto it was put on sick leave and sent back home rooks. Never saw battle be blamed his cane for ruining his chance at wartime glory years later after it starring role in a brutal beating that very cain would become the ubiquitous symbol of southern independence to the north though it was proof that secessionists understood only the language of violence up next hi listeners. threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former Vertical bar centered on white vertical bar. Twice the width. The nearby walls were fifty percent gray without true vision the black and white patterned area would simply come across his does fifty percent gray. And you wouldn't expect the brittle stars to consider that part of the arena a good hiding place instead the brittle stars flock towards the pattern suggesting they have at least rudimentary rudimentary visual skills but strangely the creatures lost this ability when they turn from red debate after doing digital reconstructions of the visual system the researchers determined determined that perhaps the reddish pigments limit the angles of light reaching photoreceptors long the animals arms thus improving the resolution of the brittle stars vision and allowing them to do in their own way.
