Asmussen Looking to Win Preakness With Midnight Bourbon

"The phillies did it. Steve asmussen did it. He's done it twice. So far in the preakness stakes. He's looking for a third victory coming up later today with midnight bourbon. Who was one of just a couple of horses coming back from the kentucky derby to take a shot at turning the tables medina spirit earlier this week. Steve took time to talk with anthony. Stabile on our race day program presented by twin spires. And here's what he had to say about his talented midnight. Bourbon you know. Come back here to pimlico. You get to re live those amazing moments and With rachel alexandra. Coming in to our barn. Jess jackson barbara banke of stonestreet bought her two days off of her oaks win. She moved into the barn three days later. And then the fact that she wasn't an original triple crown nominee. There was the you know the chance she would be excluded from running in the preakness and then getting to run drawing the thirteen posts and It was very fast. Moving times with rachel alexander leading up to the preakness but the moment i remember the most is when we walked out of the barn to walk over for preakness. I never been a part of a horse race. That that percentage of the public was on one horse inside.

"Coming down to the line. Dynamite here comes from bauer a run them down. Don't know what caliber he yet. You know Obviously running breeders cup races very respectable. I don't think jim just going to be an issue with him. He's not a very big horse. she's got some good mechanic. He's got a foot so we'll see we'll run off the well quarter mile and based on a synthetic surface. See what happens. It's still midnight. Bourbon pass the sixteenth bourbon proxy mandolin. Gamely here it is for midnight. Farben ben's look compli big beautiful horse that runs some solid races as a two year. Old man. I definitely think that there's more of a lot more mature horses a three year old and put it together in the very good. You know he's just a big beautiful horse for the huge pedigrees it. There's always been a gorgeous mover. And i think obviously you know very excited about the three year old program at fairgrounds here in louisiana and mild sixty mile lecomte. Eighth risen star in the mound. Three louis c. I'm very sure should suty. Welcome to the equine forum now. Here's mike penna here. Hall of famer. Steve asmussen california based mike mccarthy talking about their talented three year olds looking to take another step toward the twin spires. And it makes you realize the first saturday in may is edging ever closer now. Only seventy seven days nine hours forty three minutes and wait for fifteen seconds until the run for the roses. "I love the name somebody whiskers. That sad was begging to you. Don't wear back in spring valley who go up to off to a great start on the christmas Music Steve asmussen joining us and You may have seen Yesterday at Td and steve wrote an op. Ed piece and In in addition to his thoughts also Dr hawk contributed as well and steve. Good morning first of all. Good morning steve. This this is kind of inside baseball topic And you know the the general public the community you know might not have been all that aware of you know some of the the elements that you discussing this piece which includes race tracks in essentially cost cutting efforts restricting training A day a week and You know talk about What you know what caused you to step out and and you know and take to the keyboard. It's a practice that is Started at lower level race tracks. That is you know feels that it's creeping its way up and I just don't think that it allows for horsemanship or mother. Nature herself For us to do the best job with horses and My kids listening me complain about. It told me i needed to put my name on something and i feel strongly about it then. Obviously i do strong enough to put my name on it. I just think that it's a train. That does not benefit horses and horse racing intern. And i don't i think it misses the mainstream but i didn't come from the mainstream. I feel that. I've worked my way up and everybody in that position needs all the all the tools and opportunities that can be afforded sny and I i can just tell by some of the comment and the support that received You know you talked about the challenges from the training side Dr hawk talked about From a veterinary side. Explain to people the challenge and the difficulty that you know having to essentially you know the relation is well situations. You can head up to the racetrack. Planning on working dot likes the surface when you get there for whatever reason to wet to dry just not suiting you for the day and strike is closed the following day and you're dealing with an owner or group of owners that have a date circled of when they wanna run and and everything i just. I think that it is a variable that is simply in the way of doing what is best. Doing what horseman feels is best with the horse on any particular day i suppose i i suppose the track maintenance aspect that it you know we. I guess we can ease more easily understand when there's been you know the extreme weather conditions and i. I don't even believe that that is an understanding that is going to happen. Right weather is going to interrupt your schedule. And that is out of our control but when you add the element of taking another day away or you know happening to way not doing anything at all with the race. Coming up or any It is it is. It is not a practice that was used at any level Fifteen or twenty years ago. And it like i said the.

"Ship down just got here. Don't think she ran a race you know from the inside. I think she's benefited from being able to stay at keeneland settled in and train here. She also had a very good work on Sunday and expect her to do more of the same. No, she's absolutely stunning philly physically and capable of much better run than we got from her in the alphabetize. It sort of lady lily goes the ran a very nice allowance race very determined win but Most likely going to bypass the juvenile fillies and wait for later a she I. think she'd benefit greatly from a spacing Jerez Right talking with Hall of Famer. Steve Asmussen House my house my favorite midwestern Roger Keith. Doing. He's being a great student at the University of Texas that like. What what a special time that was to have the opportunity to lake my son up on. A few winners this summer So but he is back in school at the University of Texas and doing extremely well. We have one asked about bobby I can't remember the horses named yesterday afternoon. You unleashed was at silver. State. He Ran Very nice horse through the winchell thoroughbreds. The Horton's Obviously, we felt was a derby caliber, this spring Great Bay course absolutely gorgeous individual and. Some time off after a disappointing Louisiana, Derby, and he came back and ran lights out yesterday and look. Special. What are you? Thinking about race like the Malibu Scar Mile. I think with him having some conditions it's give coming off a nice long break being in great shape as is right now I think we need to look towards twenty twenty, one expecting purses to get back to some spoiled levels at Oaklawn and some of those places. I think that's what we should target with him. Always Thinking Always thinking, you don't win thousands of races without thinking Steve. Thanks for some time today as always we'll talk to you soon best of luck with the Breeders Cup. Night I appreciate it and happy handicapping..

"Hall of Fame Trainer Steve Asmussen Nice enough to join us now to talk about the. Breeders Cup namely the Sprint namely St Anthony and Bobby Newman here on race day. Thanks for some time this afternoon. and. Absolutely. Glad to join you. So of course, last year Matola getting the job done the Breeder's cup. Sprint must back Great Memories Oh. Very much. So you know MOTTOLA had A. Tremendous year in two thousand, nineteen for the Heidelberg rose You know what a? Unbelievably impressive horse pleasure around. He gets that Breeders Cup when he goes off the stud you. Pick. Right where he left off with volatile. Unfortunately volatile late summer. Early fall forced to retire must be nice to have a horse like pond to. To look down the shadow and call his number man, he has been fantastic in his first four starts his career. We're very fortunate. You know extremely blessed to be given the opportunity with multiple talented horses as you mentioned, extremely unfortunate that volatile is off to start but very feel very comfortable with his great one win in the vanderbilt as well as his. States that he showed let a brilliant horse he is, and he'll a very good chance at Stud at three chimneys. You know just I don't believe. There's any replacing or like Matola volatile compose the who they are as individuals. What makes them so special? Um with that being said, you have all little are pan being four for four very talented fast, horse? three year old tackling The Breeders Cup this year tall task that a horse with a great mind didn't plenty of physical talent. Random against older horses in the first two starts of his career. Got The job done in the main race by a nose, and then when he went to Saratoga under the gun from the rail, that was a really big effort when did you know when did you know he was going to be a good one? I mean he is really really fast. That's kind of a funny question that was asked of me previously When did I know when a Hobie Kite, work demon twenty and twenty point three at the two year old in training sale at Gulfstream, he showed that he's better than just average You know just a completely brilliant horse You know you mentioned how fortunate we are to have horses of this kind of ability brought into our care and the the Heidelberg was. Purchased Him and gave him plenty of time and she mentioned he ran against older horses his first two races being no three year old three and a maiden race at Churchill. Late summer with Kinda the delayed or racing the pandemic this year caused, and then his I thought we were honestly surprised. He didn't win easier the first time with what he had shown training. But I think a lot of that is just a his attitude and how laid back years and as you've seen in his three subsequent races. Progressive with him as far as how he's spend ridden and he has responded. Accordingly. Talked with Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, he's got the three year old yawn. Nashville. Speaking of impressive three year olds, you don't normally see horses go do what he did in his debut one fourteen to Saratoga I know it wasn't a Slob I care if. Broken glass they go one oh, seven and four, one, fourteen and two they're going to open some is he comes back and he just annihilated. Keeneland yeah What do you say about looking first time out? It's an off track racing scratch down to four. So you did what? I. See was that the real thing or my lion is under the circumstances but I think that his other than the other day at keeneland more than validated his ability. You, make a decision on him yet you're gonNA. Love. He. He is on the pre entry considered free entry lists this and have had many discussions with Elliott Walden and Winstar and were he will breeze Monday, and so. We I think that He must be considered at this stage, but with horse only having to races we'll. See how see how we're doing? And finally It's very rare that you go to the grade one winner last but echo. Echo town won the Allen Jerkins Third in his trial at Chemo and last time in the greater. Phoenix is I against older horses. Is he going forward as well You know you mentioned the great one winner laughed and they. Were all you know shiny objects and the undefeated Yao Pan and the undefeated Nashville are easy to talk to 'cause. They haven't done anything wrong. But with that being said, Eco, town is more than battle-tested I thought. He ran a solid race in the Phoenix. We have went to training him with blinkers since then I thought is just the. Kind of an odd race if you take it and snapshots eighth of a mile away from the gates, he's probably half length off the lead they calling seven links back three eighths and he gets beat two and a half. So I think that if we can. Get a little better run with him in the middle of racy compete with any sprinter in the world. And he's going to get the blinkers for the Breeders Cup Steve. And that is yes that is where our training now on what I am expecting and I like how he worked. Very well this past Sunday with blinkers on. Steve you've also got some major players on future stars, Friday Breeders Cup both in the phillies and the colts and speaking of undefeated runners Jackie's warrior four for four coming out of that monstrous win in the champagne figures to be the shortest price of the day on breeders. Cup Friday how did he come out of the race and how do you think you'll handle two turns for the first? Time That's a great question what a what a tremendous source. We watched his Saratoga special and it's hopeful. couldn't have been any more impressive. I thought until I watched his champagne We. Everybody's curiously we familiar with his pedigree Mcclain's music out of eighty five hundred man that was a multiple winner but usually at a sprint distance but I love how he you know he's got a high cruising speed Joe Got a tremendous amount of confidence any and. The way he accelerated from the head of the stretch to the wire and the champagne was extremely impressive You did mention not not to turn racism yet but he does walk into the breeders. Cup juvenile with Saratoga special hopefully champagne. Trophy and Then also on the Friday card, you've got to really nice phillies pointing toward the juvenile fillies thoughtfully coming out of the run in the also by it lady Lily coming off a nice win against allowance competition both those races Keelan, how're those phillies coming up to the race? You mentioned thought Flair I was actually pretty disappointed as out societies opening day of the..

Because the game is what it is it it. Goes on and. Presses forward. So we'll talk. We'll talk to some very happy connections and in this next couple of segments. That will him him In fact, Timmel Join US next than day out of the. Office. Wins the present first grade one win. For Tim Ham. And Tim Somebody you've heard for years and while. Gone National and Partnerships with the when Star and others? He's getting. Quality Horses and the horses that can win grade one races. So looking forward to hearing from from Tim. Ham. We'll talk about the the Philly and she even off the layoff I understood why people were You know wavering a little bit Oh she missed a month seemingly and and you know why didn't you come back for the spin away but She picked up right where she left off having one. At the beginning of the Meat Saratoga. And wins the present well, and of course, we also had had Jackie's warrior will talk to Steve Asmussen who just continues to have a parade of. Of Nice. Young Horses. The win in the Champagne Jackie's warrior was stunning I just. reinvestment risk looked like they were going to engage again and Jackie's warrior just cruised forward and. Left reinvestment risk to finish okay and and ran a nice race to be second in the champagne. But. Jackie's warrior marching toward Breeders Cup an from every standpoint. There's nothing that says looking at him that to turns is going to be any kind of a problem. He's got a he's got a long elegant neck he he doesn't look sprint the. Big. Big Great One. Follow. Up. He's got some couple of five for a long works to come up yet but. So thin this hour Tim Hammond and Steve Asmussen the hitting some of the other highlights from the weekend before Tim joins us. The. The big great one card in New York. that. Kind of unfolded after the two year olds and the two year old races you know which were early in the fourth and the fifth gave way to. Todd pletcher gets his first jockey but when. which has been something that was kind of absent on the. On the resume and that that he'd been. He'd been seeking. So. Happy Saver. It's not easy it's a it's a tricky. Element to. The makeup of. You, know of a pack animal so He's a nice source. He he He'll. He'll have to wait to find his great one. And since we're mentioning acid, let me also slip in. The news from first thing this morning that enable officially was retired and we'll certainly do some enable appreciations, but there's plenty of time for that. Wonderful wonderful career. and. "Max player individually, it was watch all of his previous races. you know observing feel very comfortable with his attitude with his demeanor with how he travels. And have went to the racetrack at Churchill with him got a few Gallup's any Relatively, easy work for him by himself and then added company to it from there. So from a timing standpoint felt very good about the three weeks we had at that point leading up to the Derby and feel that he is settled in. Well, love the fact that he jumped right into the feet up with the change and has done really well. Interesting. You say that you go back and watch the replays of all of his previous races. Coach goes back and watch his game film What what thinks stood out to you steve when you watch him and you saw those previous races, what were some of the things that jumped out to you that you picked up on? I. We feel that he's a horse that keeps coming and he he he He just. got a very good action It uses the very efficiently and don't feel that he will appreciate the mile and a quarter. You know Steve I said earlier, there is only one trainer in the history of the sport that is saddled more winners than you, and of course, that's Dale Baird. Your now closing in on nine thousand career victories. The Kentucky Derby man that's a tough one to get past. It's eluded you. But you've been tantalisingly close on a couple of occasions with looking at Lee and Niro, and we remember curling finishing third gunrunner. Why is that race so difficult to add to the resume? 'cause it's. Most coveted. Prize and horse racing but. On a very positive note I'm undefeated Kentucky Derby in September? Yeah Great Point I. Guess The that that's a good way to look at it and we'll see if if masks player can keep Steve Asmussen undefeated in September in their run for the roses. Which one of those Steve, which one of those keeps you up most at night the the the ones that you were so close with. I, it's a situation whereas if if the Derby was run in, September on, those years would curl of gunrunner Ben beatable. Just tortoises it Came around and. Continue to improve and the circumstances of this year allow for that. The Derby would have been running may would have had a considerably different field and It'll be extremely interesting but I. Worry about looking back. You just worry about looking forward. If the next one you run windshield, we'll be okay. All right. So finish the sentence for me then if Max Player wins next Saturday to win the Kentucky Derby for Steve. asmussen would be what? Next.

Me also slipping another one to a first time starter coming up at the end of the week at Alice Summer Ride this Candy Reid and Tore. Had some pretty chronic. That he's going to need A. Giving him a race on, turf you have. Not called Speaker Colts that have been in frame too long. They are race to get them over the hump from fitness level. I think giving run on the turf, a safe thing to do, but he was meant for the dirt and further distances. So we'll keep an eye on him. And of course candy ride out of Eskin, d'auray, a mayor and Seems like. Seems like he's. Got To keep an eye on this one There's there's It was a three hundred ten thousand dollar, Euro. Crack very attractive, or that has some talent, but he's he needs to run. He's been in the bar and training for too long. Well Steve is a wonderful weekend A grade one when it's era toga for volatile on Saturday and K J Keith James a winner in the nightcap last night at Lodestar congratulations to the clients to you. The family just a the smiles told it all. The thank you very much very very special moment where the horse racing will have the Asmussen family very grateful. Steve Asmussen, everybody and I'll put that picture up. Actually I, re tweeted it from last night, Lone Star, putting it out, and and if you saw Keats, you saw the press release and. Keith himself acknowledging being. Twenty four and that. Lodestar, twenty two years of of racing action, and that he just you know growing up that that was the race track that he frequented the most and so to get the the win they're. Very special and IF I'm not mistaken Steve's. Gone I think but Pretty sure. That Steve's first win came at mater at maynard ounce. Where I? I I'll also make the connection to mater that Pat Cummings that was the last place I think that the last. Track announcer that major had was pat. Pat called racist right absolutely in fact. In fact. We came down. I never acted. Maybe I have discussed this with that over the years and I haven't gotten the results yet from pat now that I think about it from. Contest we gotta get the we gotTA. Get the. Prop contest results. Who won but We were at Philly. We were running. I I'M GONNA I'M GONNA. Say Kicking and screaming. and. Pat was calling. He was filling in for Keith Jones that we keith was on vacation or think he actually heath may have had a may have had a surgery or something. I'll ask pat this for. We gotta get a clarification. anyway Steve asmussen and volatile and much much more hope. You took a couple of notes there on some horses that Seem worth worth tracking that summer ride the cut out to be my source, but sounds like it's going to take one Kevin. That's is GonNa join us and I. Think Yeah. I think we'll have him momentarily and we'll talk about the amazing. and. Hard to par to stop. Mayor now seven. starship jubilee. And I am curious actually because I thought I thought I'm going to ask Alaska. Going to have to ask. The cabin there because. I thought she was heading to the. Mommy. To being a broodmare. and. When she went through then she yeah, I'm GonNA. Check this Kevin. That's our joins US and. Kevin I'm I was free associating a little bit waiting and I I WANNA say that last November wasn't. She headed to the. To the. Broodmare band. I I, didn't I? Wasn't sure that she was coming back as a seven year old. That was originally the idea. he Contemplating your of the breeding shot, but then decided We were GONNA. Give it another shot in the sunshine. Millions and see how she performed how she came out of the race, and if she continued to kind of have that will to win and he was obviously founding healthy that we would kind of take it reached by race. Well and race by race has resulted in more steak success, including Saturday where on Q., when have your Castellano Astor? She responded, and she very mild upset of sister. Charlie and her eighth grade at stake win originally going back. into the at Camp A. Sixteen thousand dollar claim and it the story just you know keeps writing chapter after Chapter Your first stake win the New York. Congratulations. Yeah that was I mean obviously like the been there the covert I wasn't allowed to travel but it was It was really exciting, watching TV and reading. Some thoughts about you know going into this race and you know knowing that. You. You GotTa Horse Like Sister Charlie. that is actually you know on A. Kind of A. Par in a lot of ways. You know an older mayor that Coming back for her started her six year old season. It felt like a good spot in terms of you know catching her a little footed and you having a recency edge. "The victory ride kicks off the stakes action here at Belmont Park tomorrow afternoon grade three early in the caught has just the feel of five phillies. GOING TO GO Six and a half furlongs as for the three year old's warning line favors one francs. Rock Cat Hall of Famer Bill Will Give Fellow Hall of Famer John Velazquez a leg up and this phillies done very little wrong on her career. She's three for seven. With four second-place finishes ran second in a couple of graded stakes, including the grade one spin away up at Saratoga last year last seen winning a third level allowance optional claimer. She uses stakes. Winner took the any limit kick off three year old season three starts back. and. Probably the only reason that this race isn't later in the card is that it's a five Horsfield and Franks? Rakhat is three to five on the morning line, and she may be the the loan speed in race, so she's going to be tough to beat at three to five, but that's a pretty short price, considering there some pretty good up and coming phillies near now I think number four center. I'll I'm going to give her another shot for. For Chad Brown and Joel Rosario Sheila Great Getting Her Maiden Win Gulfstream Park, when bet down to three to five at the end of March then came back in a tough allowance race at Churchill downs where she was really over bet, she was three to five that day against another very impressive maiden winner of this one for Steve Asmussen in casual casual ran a great race that day center I'll had all sorts of problems. She didn't break that well. She had trouble during the race, and she was just really never in at any point. I think it's a racy can kind of draw a line through? If she runs closer to the way she did and her debut. I think she's the one that could give Franks rock cat. The biggest problem Franks rocket will probably get the lead I would think Rosario would have center I'll sitting justin behind her and seeing if they can outgun into the line going six and a half furlongs. With you I'm going to take a shot with center. Rile planner. If? When I plan! Early took five tomorrow I will use both Franks rocket and center, but I'll tell you what I think. You can make a case also for up in smoke was undefeated and sprints. She's four five and a career. Lone blemish came when George Weaver tries to stretch her out Hollywood wildcat. Go at Gulfstream Park. She's raced exclusively of Gulfstream, in fact, steady diet once. Once a month February march April may June now. She gets a race in July. Here over Big Sandy, she wanted the game face overboard last time out for weaver Rod Ortiz Junior. Who wrote her in her debut against fellow Florida breads down at Gulfstream Park's in the climb back aboard for the first time. Since that day looks, you'll need a little help up front if Franks, rockets able to set an easy pace I. She's going to be very very tough. I think Senator I'll be the first one to come calling. Those are the two up in smoke. If you're looking to three deep, I don't think you need to center for Bobby and I race number three goes as the great three six and a half for a long victory ride go to the end of the card. Eleven race card like I said earlier, and the final four races make up an all stakes pick four, and it starts in reasoning with the greed three poker. Flat Mile on the turf for many years. This was the fourth of July staple. On the naira calendar here it is now as part of a super five stakes card. In, the poker though. On the widener, so they come out of that shoot. On the clubhouse turn we get a field of eight entered for the turf as a main track. Only it's all relevant with the way. The weather's been here. I would imagine you know there's supposed to be some rain. We're recording the show Friday afternoon supposed to be some rains rather day on Friday and into the evening. I can't imagine it enough to take this off the turf, so let's say it will be a field of eight.

Tremendous machine moments in the horse that the of gaining energy as they as they go, so we'll get. Some thoughts from him about. "Those that liked to watch this topic, they they will. Enjoy the next four days, and of course you can watch. The sale pretty much everywhere. BS SALES DOT COM, the first and foremost than especially if you're going to be watching it through the sales. APP sales format. But the are F- streams and. Sodas, blood horse I mean it's it's everywhere so looking forward to it, and we'll get certainly tomorrow we'll get day one report and some initial reaction from from said. And one of the things I love to do that this time the the TD N.. Publishes their. Pin Hook Guide every day at the sale and. You get the list of previously. purchased. yearlings weanlings whatever it was and. Now. You know going back through the rings. You get a chance to see. The home runs among the pin hooks so ten o'clock. We'll keep an eye there. There is some there might be some early fireworks one of the things that. I, think is anticipated when you read most of the coverage and Most of the quotes from consigners. And prospective buyers. The top end. The top end will be the top end. I. It just doesn't seem to be any stopping that but it'll be. It'll be notable. I mean there were there will be some unbelievable bargains that'll be looked back on. At the end of the year or Next year when they're three year olds and so forth the, it's just impossible that. You know given the circumstance. There aren't horses that will. You know under sell that that and there's also you know it also notable to watch the Arnaiz and see you know who takes their horses, home and racism. the not everybody. Is going to take. The price at hand. They put in a reserve, but. Some cases not all summer sold without reserve and. There's plenty of people that aren't going to just give away their. You know they've got that option Yeah. There's plenty of people that will take on partners and and race. So. Very important and interesting four days ahead that that's the bottom line We've got three hours ahead. That will include some some gavel knock and watching but we've got some fun. Conversations setup to and Steve Asmussen is going to visit and didn't get a chance to talk to reach for Steve Yesterday. And I actually in some way A. Glad I did because later today at Lone Star Park. And Lone Star off to a very nice start and the new landscape. That's been refashioned essentially in.

What is next with Racehorses not comfortable Sir Well Finally Steve. How do we like how do we like? Blue Moon rise today at the Will Rogers. He should lock them. Oh zing I love it. "Mike Penna in Lexington Kentucky Studios. Happy to have you back with me. That was Terry Wallace. always great to have his voice on the program. Anytime you can get it. That was the two thousand seven running of the rebel. Kirwin one of four winners in the race saddled by hall of Famer Steve Asmussen. Who's with me now? He's looking to add to that total later today when he sends out three horses. In this year's edition and Steve. I know it's a busy morning for you so I appreciate the time. Good Morning. Good morning hard to believe. It's been twenty years since the first time you won the rebel back in two thousand with a horse by name of snuck in snuck in was a great win for us to give cash. My brother wrote. He was very very special. Then Yeah Family Affair and at that Point Stephen. Two thousand you know. You weren't necessarily Steve asmussen super trainer. You're still kind of trying to make your name in the sport right very much. So you know the thing. We love about racing. No matter how good you did yesterday you gotTa lineup and do it again. Today you're constantly given the opportunity to prove yourself and I think we have that opportunity again today with Rebel all right. So let's talk about the three horses that you're GonNa Saddle today and I guess we'll start with basin since he is a horse that second choice on the morning line. Tell me a little bit about basin. Brian Harsh you know. Great one winner winner. The hopeful has trained extremely impressively This winter at the fairgrounds. And if he is capable is to turn says he is at one he will be a superstar. What's he show you? That makes you think he will be good at two turns just like he was at one turn. He's very athletic. Very efficient mover not overly heavy. Just take a lot of himself when he's going fast and a dominating company obviously this wouldn't be the ultimate goal for basin. That would come on the first Saturday in. May All things being equal but you want to see him. Run a good race today. What do you do with a horse? That hasn't been out since September trying to get him ready for a peak effort on March fourteenth. Here today what do you do as a trainer? Steve to make sure he's ready. That's what basically just That we have plenty of bottom anymore. He's in a position that he can protect himself and he's physically prepared for what's going to happen Off looks like we're going to have an off track today. Obviously there's tremendous amounts of speed in. They're using the capable hands of Castellano. And I think we're just Hopefully he's away from the gates cleanly We feel very good about the preparation that he has any. And as you said this is the first race of his season and as we all know are hoping the third racing season will be the Kentucky Derby. Yeah and no to wet tracks of the same you know especially when you talk about Saratoga. He won the hopeful. And the SLOP. And now you get a wet track Oakland later today but it has to give you a little bit of of confidence to know that. Okay it he at least handled a wet surface. Saratoga doesn't it a very much so and when you're around. I think that you would not worry about an off track. He is very athletic. Cat like the very nimble on his feet so. I don't think that the racetrack will give you any trouble. It does appear that he'll have a little bit thrown on him by all the pace in the race and that will be new for him He had drawn the outside. Even though he wasn't on the lead he just had a very advantageous host position on the whole and handled it really well so there. There's a lot of new for today but you couldn't have anymore confidence and horses ability than we do this. You join me on this show back on February seventeenth and that was the morning of the southwest stakes in you. We'RE GONNA SADDLE SILVER PROSPECTOR. That day well. We know he went on to win that race. He's back again in the rebel. What's what what are these past? Few weeks for silver prospectors since that win. I feel very good about Thorson. His You know obviously talented with the success. That he's had in the Kentucky Jockey Club against his law courses of that caliber and then run a very fast race In the south west of handled wonderfully away from the gates a lot sharper than he wasn't a Smarty Jones. I thought Ricardo had him in a perfect position with plenty of pace in front of him and he came home. Nicely A great amount of confidence when you can get to do the same thing on the on the same racetrack. So We do. I think with all the three-year-old perhaps Is Very Unlikely That your last racist. Good enough your next one. And it's all about which three year olds are improving this time of year and we feel that we feel very good about the group of three year olds so we do have. Yeah you have the three in of course you know basin and Silver Prospector. And then you have accession. The longshot. Thirty one he is probably the the furthest behind. I guess the other two. If you WANNA look at it in that fashion one for eight lifetime tell me about accession as you mentioned you know the grade one winner in the great to winner in there as well as accession he'll benefit from it backing up to a mile and a sixty. He's a very large horse. That is not completely to himself yet. And I think he'll benefit from backing up from the mile and eight of the risen. This year's risen star for the mile and a sixty today. You know it's interesting because so often we hear trainers talk about trying to keep their horses separated as they move down the road to the Kentucky Derby and here you are with three of the eight in the rebel stakes today by design. Is that the way you planned? I on the ball. I I WANNA get these sources to the Derby and give them their one chance at the Derby. I think that they're pretty much propels. The sport as far as their value and what people are wanting and I did not feel that moving these these sources across the country or some variable that. We weren't comfortable with with answer any of the questions that we weren't going forward and I and I- greedily hope this isn't the last time they run against each other and they all stay on course for the Derby talking with Hall of fame trainer. Steve Asmussen here on the Horse. Racing Radio Network Steve. You've had a chance now to experience saddling. A Horse running a horse with no fans in attendance at the race track. You were there. What what was that like with me? It's pretty typical. Everybody says I'm in my own world anyway. I it is it is weird pre race the during racer worried about the exact same thing. Yeah is there was no. You're not even really paying attention to it when the horses are coming down the stretch. You're right you know. If they're acting typical for who they are. You know where that yesterday you know a little bit off track you were concerned about how some of 'em we're going over at early in the race and you know we had a couple of pleasant surprises a couple of disappointment but it's the same worries you know are you. Are you going to show up today? Are you can run your race. You know I talked about this at the top of the show Steve. With so many other well pretty much every other major sport saying okay. We're just going to suspend operations for the next three four weeks. Whatever it might be horse racing saint all right. We'll we'll take the approach of running window fans and keeping the doors open. Is that the right approach for horse racing at this time. I definitely believe that it is Not GonNa ask me when I'm thinking about something as large as that were mentioned about three year olds and this is extremely extremely important to him in the next step staying in rhythm getting the racist you expect out of them you know they. They don't stay ready. They get ready and I am very anxious to see where we're at with this quality of three year old and I think this is an opportunity to do so Separate from that. I believe that Oakland and the was up seven percent yesterday from the corresponding date a year ago. The pre rebel card. We're pretty much the only show to show in town take advantage. Yeah Well said. I'D BE REMISS. If I didn't ask you about your daughter of Kirwin who you're GONNA send out in these areas stakes today as well lady apple who won the Houston Ladies Classic. Last time out she took the Remington Park Oaks. The time before that. Tell me a little bit about lady apple and how. She's doing coming into today. Very special filly so proud of what she accomplished last year. When she was spurred in the hopes she was the youngest source in the field. Not a real big stature. Philly just looks like a deer almost as good as she did. Last year everybody felt like being a curling with time that she would then get to the next level and for her to come out of the box and Beat to accomplish grade one winners in. I read the we were so proud of her with running the Houston Lady. I'm GonNa let you go in a second. Steve but I do have to ask you about midnight and that performance in Saudi Arabia. What an effort she put in that day. What an amazing there you know I just how consistent. She was last year in her attitude. Inner training with all the travel. She had just your game face way. She goes about exercise the way she goes about her works. What unbelievable blessing to be around quality? Or like she is and then her to go to Saudi Arabia and run as valiantly as she did against the best sources in the world and in the paddock in the closure an is exciting as everything was what a what a beautiful group of horses they had a symbol and for her to show up the way she did. We couldn't anymore proud of her and we were midnight. Masud today arrived at Keeneland out of quarantine or I should flown back to Chicago team. They're weak and she's back in the racing stable this morning so we're relieved and excited about that. We'll I know my good friend. Jeff Bloom and bloom racing. Think that she should now be awarded. I first place in the Saudi Cup knowing what we now know about the situation with trainer Jason Service a maximum security who won that race Do you agree she's world. That's how that's how I feel. That's how I felt going over there. That's how I feel coming back. And that's how I deal today. I just She is a true blessing and anybody. Who's been around her nose surgery? Only del Baird has saddled more winners in the history of our sport than Steve Asmussen. Steve appreciate the visit and spending some time here. I know it's a busy day. I'll let you go all the best and good luck this afternoon. I'd have had again..

"Forced out rainbow six yesterday at Gulfstream Opening Day and opening weekend at Oaklawn Houston Ladies Classic at Sam. Houston then that that card into the early evening yesterday to absorb and it'll take a couple of days I think there's also plenty of recapping yet to do with the connections from Eclipse Award Night Thursday. We did the recapping and we got you going on on Friday into the weekend. The opening day at Oaklawn hard not to revel in what went on at hot springs. The last seventy two hours a terrific first few days thirty thousand eight hundred Saturday and and looking forward to getting into some of those results including the opening day stake the first step toward the Arkansas Derby. Southwestern rebel the Smarty Jones opens the season. Gold streaked scully pointed you in that direction with Martin Garcia and Steve Asmussen sending out Gold Street. Steve will join us in this hour. Asmussen with a magical Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday. What can you say you know able to share in two championships with the highly brought season Mottola in Jeff Bloom and company with midnight? Be Sue and then opening day. Oakland wins the smarty Jones Shift to last night wins wins the ladies classic in a a mild upset I I suppose. The price was fabulous on lady apple but that was a a terrific for horses headlong down the stretch seren getty empress turning back challenge. Enjoy after challenge but in the last couple of jumps just could not withstand lady apple rallying inside the Kirwin philly under Ricardo Santana junior and maybe out of sight the Asmussen team was also winning the Riley Alison at Sunland. Onlin a top of everything else. So we'll talk to Steve and some of the next steps in the various runners that were successful and then some that that misfired when it came to Saturday and and the action at at Hallandale. The Pegasus kind of just to me to some extent and we'll talk opt to Johnny tomorrow. He's traveling right now. He and Gail. We're down there and John. You'll talk about everything that went on. I and the racing when we talk tomorrow and we'll also touch on those but gail talk about it. Seemed was Djalo. She's Kahlo she was. He was wherever wherever Jaylo arrived. Johnny Gayle L.. Were right there and gale gale beside herself for seeing Jaylo the racing using side. It just was a you know a kind of strap yourself in and play along on kind of a day it it you know to me. I'M NOT GONNA I don't want to say it was workmanlike but you did the work and you did the bedding and you hit a few and got stymied a couple of times. At least I did. I was a little frustrated with a couple of singles singles that I thought in the early pick for and or the middle pick four and then in the late action. I mean a lot of us. Undoubtedly stymied stymied by spooky channel the neck winner. We're GONNA talk to Brian Lynch because it was one of the fun moments. Certainly of Saturday Lychee will kick off the conversations. Spooky Channel was kind of easy to gloss over. But you you know second off the the layoff and having run maybe a little sneaky in the Fort Lauderdale. I know gus sniffed amount. Gus had him Lonzo in his dabs at Brisbane that gus put them on top and loved them. Paid seventy four sixty gus. Actually when we get the Vegas. I'm sure we'll sit with God because he's GonNa play in in the NFC. He'll he'll tell tell you his tale of woe yes. He cashed quite nicely spooky channel in Zulu Alpha two in the big race for the turf. Then he didn't use my left off which Auguste though so it happens. All of us. Nice job by Mike Welch with Zulu Alpha by turning you in that direction twenty five sixty and Muccio Gustavo. It just seems like this race. This pegasus its first four runnings. It just gets overwhelmed. A horse just swamps the field. And that's what Muccio Gustav did and the timing was right and certainly you you know getting on a on a tight fasttrack. After all the work he was putting in back at Santa. Anita uh-huh and BAFFERT WHO I. I can't really decide. I'm going to be at Santa Anita Thursday Friday and Monday Tuesday next week. But we'll probably talk to. We'll probably talk to Bob in the third hour. Today his quote was when they reached the quarter pole. I said to myself myself. Why didn't I go? He stayed back and of course baffled. Not You know not hopping on planes and traveling as much as as you used to but this a pretty darn good prep for mutual Guzzo who will go to the Middle East. I for his next assignment. And there's an amazing story to tell about Muccio Gustavo in addition to just winning this race and and so forth but of course Prince Faisal bin Khalid bought this horse specifically to run in the Saudi race off of Baffert client Michael Lund Peterson and Peterson's involvement came along at Tema neom as a two year. Old KIP L ser. Who was in New Zealand right now for the sale? He'll be back at the end of the week. I will probably not talk to Boyd until next week. But I reached out to boyd early on on Sunday morning and kept bought Muccio Guzzo as a baby and and you know he he had sold very inexpensively as a short yearling than a little bit more fetched a little bit more as a keeneland. YEARLING KIP trained him. Developed him got him started. Tried to Salam in the spring are in aid for modest money and then two months later fetches six hundred and fifty thousand when he turned in a brilliant effort at two modem so it's a very interesting story and then from there of course Baffert Baffert gave him the usual shakedown toward. They're trying to get involved in the three year old opportunities of last year he really just connected all the dots and batterer. Tease looks and Steve Rushing. Look like geniuses for latching on to muccio Gustavo and it won't the loomed up and then I thought he was kind of treading water and then when Iraq asks you know Little Pass Midway on the turn he just gobbled up MR freeze voting express ran very credibly. War story comes comes running late for third which was not impossible to see the disappointments in here of course higher power and taxing attacks really never higher power tried to attend the face and then folded up and tax attack though just really kind of went through the motions and I I know the report is Oh you know nobody bled and we're whoa okay. That may be the report but some Morse's certainly certainly ran with characteristics associated associated with with horses. Not You know Breathing as as easily as they might. I think so. I think there was only one winning favourite. I'm a hole card right. I think market analysis and Todd pletcher with a very nice afternoon atomic blonde and the two maiden winners candy tycoon Hi coon for Mathis stable and market analysis for China Wars Club in Windstar Farish Bread Honor Code coat. It's very solid eighty four by think market analysis and then atomic blonde upset Mitchell road. There were a whole honestly. I look is GonNa join us today. Johnny Eddie flip-flopping with the ten o'clock With Johnny traveling this morning so I don't know how much I was busy Saturday but I I'm sure he caught a couple of of these events. I the thing to me. That was really notable five to two beaten eaten favorite in the first race. Five to two beaten favourite in that maiden special candy tycoon was seventy two CECCHI Shabazz at one to two beaten in the world of trouble turf market analysis. The only seventy five. The only winning favourite girls know best. I I don't know why girls know best was favored that much over Gene Elizabeth. Jean Elizabeth Larry Ravelli and the Ravelli Kelly Raven Ritchie Ravin than and Patricia is hope team. Mitchell road was even money. Free Enterprise was just. It's not not competitive. Just didn't run free. Enterprise came in looking like you know a a horse that was whose time was now did not run and under two to one lady Panam beaten on the square. Bhai Mean Mary who will talk to Graham motion later that was in the privy aunt. She ran fine but I mean Mary got away with some easy splits. Yeah one after the other spice perfection. She kinda loomed and flattened out under two to one. Read night just you know. Came running late ninety cents on the dollar. This was this was the whole day one favorite and without parole kind of chase. Then sort of finished evenly Mo- Forza Joel. Rosario basically hugging the outside fence. What that was both of you know kind of loomed but you know had had been the six path in the hallway route without parole was seven to to move? Forward was ninety two and then of course higher power ended up going the favourite ultimately favoritism was bouncing around between him and and Muccio Gustavo and even tax was sort of hovering the very interesting day of racing and then of course yesterday the eleven thousand plus distribution big player edge thirteen percent player edge. Thanks to Marshall Grams. Calculations and all of Marshall's calculations were rewarded. Because he he won with Dot Matrix trix. They won McConnell ten strike. Did yesterday. We'll talk to Brad Cox and we'll celebrate his two championships as well British idiom and confetti so Graham Ocean Brad Cox Steve asmussen and Brian Lynch Andy and probably Bob Baffert and as we head through the break. You obviously.

"We're back at the races about ten minutes to the top of the hour. This is an overdue. visit all on on me. Getting Steve Asmussen Asmussen here to join us. And GotTa go all the way back to Breeders Cup actually even before we talk about the two year old sweep and another. I I think half a dozen maiden wins including the very pricey gesture town yesterday in New York. But Steve. Let's start with Mottola. Congratulations to you and the highly rats. Thank you and I said Steve I. It was just wrapping coming up without stall and was talking about his clients. And so it gave me an easy segway to you and your visit and you know that we were going to catch catch up on Mottola because the howling brought have been with you from the day you hang a shingle. It is a very very very nice The Jewish in for the whole team and A lot of success and for them to have a champion like mccully. This year is very special and you could see it. You could see it on the on the race. Track both you and Scott and Mrs Broad Rod and this is a horse that has been just so consistent all year. I mean just talk you know in in in a snapshot I mean I mean this is we could be having this conversation in January after the eclipses but just talk about his year in review from from your perspective. How well I think? He's a horse given the opportunity proved himself. And you go back to the met mile and the feels that was assembled For that is in two times by world kept winners under snow they can be the highest rank force in the country. At that time I took it to them. And what a great. What a great win integrate rate than Off of that effort to you know prove on Breeders Cup Day that he passed the source in the world Under trying circumstances is Proving South very very rewarding feeling get it done and the the the tactical nature of of his speed I think really was fleshed out as the year went on the that that if he had to if he had to go toe to toe he could do that if he was in a situation where it behooved them to maybe set off a little bit. He could do that he really he really kinda showed. What a what a complete runner he was as the year went on? He's just physically table and the horse has a great mind with elite level of ability. And I yeah I think he had a tremendous year without a doubt and it'll culminate In January with a with a trophy for the collapse and wish him luck in his stud career. Steve Let's talk about the weekend. which was really a a two year old dominated and that includes Saturday's performance over the course of about an hour and change between finite coming through as as the favourite and then that was in the Goldenrod and then in the Jockey Club with silver prospector? Kind of fulfilling confidence that that We we've seen and read You know how much you guys think of him in the barn. And let's start with the Philly who I thought was was even better than.

Rich Eng Talks About the Potential of This Breeder's Cup Due to Changes in Play

"There is rich good morning good morning I rich Eh. This was going to talk about the official for this Breeders Cup because of the way Santa Anita's playing and because they've kept track slow you know trying to equate it goal you know when it comes to the main track how decided edge are you gonNA give them next week well that's a really good question because neither track is a lot different now than it's been in years they've really slowed it down it's a lot deeper I thought we saw kind of a little taste of how a shiver might handle the different track is seeking the soul it come out to southern California not do well and I think a lot has to do with the track surface but I've noticed some of the trainers have opted to come out really likes Steve Asmussen and some others and I think that's a smart move the acclamation oh even if they don't get a full blown work but at least Allah on a consistent basis each morning over the track has got to be a help in getting these choices used to the deeper surface and so that's a great question in my mind is going to definitely play as one faction when factor and Randy Kevin and the the Asmussen early you know early move out there I thought was was pretty telling and in the when I guess it was what probably four years ago maybe when asked listen sent Scott Blasi out for a winter and tried to establish a beachhead and of course the the racetrack wasn't necessarily the same way then but I think the I struggled a little bit and the fact that the fact that they went out early like this is to me is notable and you know obviously midnight be sue and Matola or the you know are the are the principal stars but yeah there's plenty more they got the baby seizes well that shoplifted for instance in the juvenile wicked whisper for the girls race so they've got a they've got a strong hand that they they bring out just it's GonNa be the other issue when it comes to trying to decipher this rich on Friday you know you always you always looked what the track is doing on Friday to maybe make some interpretation for how to approach Saturday but in this case dealing with the oval races the two you know you've only got those two and obviously there's not gonNa be any any east coast horses participating in the golden in state races so you really don't you really can't count on the juvenile performances as necessarily of a gauge on what's going to happen Saturday juvenile's the juvenile's could misfire for all kinds of reasons well you know that's certainly a possibility in order to jumps off the page to myself and a lot of people can get juvenile day the stars in the Future Day is a dentist moment he has been working so fast that I you know I quite frankly I'm salivating the white he can do next try I certainly hope Iran's oil because that would be exciting if he's able to run a big race could create a national natural eastwest kind of like competition with Bob Baffert eight rings who seems to be possibly the best our west and then this moment back east and we always like like rivalries and this might be one step the first step of maybe these two meeting multiple times from what you've seen so far we had dictum earlier Steve asking just spent an hour we mostly we spent a good half hour on the on the classic what are you your initial impressions talk about hours you know like that we wanna see not only what they do in the Breeders Cup but then and look forward to three year old season and that's one of the real appeals of of the juvenile card on Friday what other horses what other spots rich are you initially focused on and particularly eager to get the fields drawn and a start to make decisions in my mind I think the most interesting angle that certainly will get played up a lot is the decision of Bill Mata enter a late first preference in the classic I've been reading a lot of comets and social media there's a lot of people who don't think that was a good move but I certainly would not the question anything that the bill sites you do because one is in the hall of fame already and I will never be and the two is sure he is thought this through and in bounce the idea off a lot of people in his circle of advisers and friends and well he did not come to a decision like this early so I'm really interested to see how she runs You know the last time we had the philly slash mayor running the classic was of course the Great Sin Yada and you know her resume speak for herself I I don't think anybody questioned her I at least I hope they didn't question her running in the classic twice you on one year and then got beat the head by blaming the second go round but you know I think this is a good opportunity for me right because this is not in my mind one of the most talented classic fields that we've seen down the pike it's a good group but I think if you look at the figures going back on a lot of the horses at rendered I mean they're good speed figures but they're not great speed figures any late depending on your sources either consistently can consistently run with them on her best day or did not that far behind in proven factor she's three for three going a mile and a quarter so you know in the last furlong or two and some maybe gasping the hope is that she'll be just come out like a like a Azzam tank and the stretch and I would be real interesting if she could upset that growth so that's my number one choice as far as interest well in fact you earlier this week you wrote a little piece kind of looking at some some price potentials and some some more says that you've already thank that you you might WanNa bet on late was was a big focus affect the you started the discussion with her what other what other prices have you have you just been kind of tracking you know knowing that you know once the fields got assembled the you would probably utilize well I could go back Act that the store I did ready for America's best racing website in the I focused on three space limitations kind of parental from going much deeper but I will as we get into the coming days but the second horse I listed is actually a fairly high marquee horse from the trump the crown the season is improbable for Bob Efforts I think people who watched his race in the Pennsylvania Derby the last time out the horse activist open the starting gate again I I don't know what exactly causes it I'm sure Bob Baffert is has been trying a million things that try to remedy the behavior situation in the but the horse got off slowly and then the made a huge run to get into the race and the only lost by a length and a quarter length and a half in the blanket finish at the wire but he's writing and entered in the mile I think it's a really good spot for them I know there's GonNa be a lot of high profile case the date you're going to be above him but you know thing that happens in saying the neither sometimes you get a little too fast paced especially or she's that are used to running twenty twos and forty five you know they they may not be able to relax as much as the connections would want and set up a fast pace and double and everything I read about him that's been training brilliantly for Baffert so I thought he would be dangerous pricewise I think he'll go off at a higher odds and people might assume because there's some other horses like money and if he behaved himself Steve and brings his game I mean he's your horse I'm looking at it the hopefully usually Christ you know I it the one thing that that and he was my derby pack and and I've been a fan of his literally from day one and I was at La Salle for the for the futurity baffled in the dirt mile with this kind of horse I think has been I can't recall top of my head if you know that that he's had much success with this to be honest

Jose Ortiz Interview - October

"Welcoming Jose Ortiz who is a native of Puerto Rico and his one more than nineteen hundred races in what has been just a a stellar career and that career still going strong and he's with me now here on H. R. N. Jose Good Morning My friend Mike give having yeah. Thanks for taking a little time. I know you're a busy working horses. This morning. Never ends does it does not if you want to be the best which right now you certainly are my friend Brendan. You know it's interesting. I mentioned being a native of Puerto Rico one of the jockeys who mentored you when you came here and one of the people that you looked up to is his hall of Famer Johnny Velazquez who last week set the record for most greatest stakes victories by jockey in the history of the sport and that has to make you very proud. I know that yeah yeah we are happy about it and it keeps going throwing you know hopefully he can give winning some more on winning out much again until you know until heater dyers what makes him so good then you got a lot of these. Atlanta for the sport and I think that having taken to the next level where he's been for awhile you know yeah he certainly he's been doing it for a long time and still doing it at a very high level. How many great stakes victories are you behind him now. I don't know I have made the way to go yeah one day well that win yesterday and the Phoenix was impressive. This is a horse. You've you've been on before you knew him. You get back aboard him yesterday and he's able to hold off Whitmore who was putting in that late run. Take me through the race Jose. Well we broke. We broke very good. expect expecting a much faster pace but they did in in came out of five dollars. I thought they would and I was able to be closer than I than I thought. I was going in two weeks so I think that well We have a very pain trip when I ask him to. Well what they're for me the whole time. You know he's a horse worse by intimacy if that when you were riding him last year and even this year at Saratoga he was trained by Chad Brown now he's trained by Steve Asmussen. Ah when you were riding him before he was always knocking on the door but he couldn't quite get past horses like promises fulfilled you yesterday you beat him and everybody everybody else. Is there a difference. Did you feel something different now with engage than you did last year. He always been a ah very nice or worse. I think some more mature before others on. I think he'd take a while but I think he finally figured out you know. Did you know that Moore was gaining on your yesterday. I didn't knew what Whitmore Kabaya fell somebody coming out. You can tell yeah I could yeah. Did you know you had enough left in the tank. He very game he always has been and I knew what GonNa try but you know something this all horrors you know he's just turned four so there's all live orders season and they are very good. You know they they come in. They coming at you like wait Marino. He's very nice or you know that win. In the Phoenix was part of a Multi Win Day on opening day of Keeneland then you you've had several days in your career where you've won multiple races like that. I asked you what makes John Velazquez so good. What makes Jose Ortiz so good. I don't let somebody out of that. Answer that question. I guess right to be myself on gave that horses the best chance to win but you also worked very hard I mentioned you're out working in horses this morning. I know you're being humble and and that's what's part of makes you part of. What makes you so good but Jose you work your tail off and put me the in in the saddle with you for minute if you will if I can use that term take me through like your routine in your approach to riding races. How do you get ready to go out there. Every day and ride was everything star on the when the overnight comes up so I have to see we shorts on on quantum there I go the R F and and they got the raises and I put him whatever I think they should be and you know I have to talk to a trainers on and follow their their instructions but at the same time I want to I want her to be relax and that's that's what I try to be happy and I think they control and relaxed. We'll give you a running the end of it yeah you know. Johnny will always tell tell me about his different plans that he has going into the starting gate the plan a plan b the Plan C. and you hope you don't have to get any further than that but once the gates open you can listen to the trainers instructions all day long but once the gates open things can change quickly right very quickly. What do you you do at that point. Do you say Oh my God. I gotTa follow his instructions or do you say I just gotTa. Let my instincts takeover in and try to ride this race the way it needs to be ridden now so you've got to let your instincts they over because it's very tough to execute a plan when their plan doesn't work from from the gate you know. Yep You gotta change everything so I think you just gotTa Julia uh-huh. Yeah everything you could do everything changes in and you just have to adjust and that's why I've always said you know jockeys in terms of there's always that debate are jockeys true athletes athletes and I think you know I've said for years but pound for pound jockeys the most gifted athletes that we find in all sports and I have no doubt about it and you're certainly right there Jose. Let's talk about the horses that you're going to be aboard today. You're in all of the great stakes races at keeneland which is to be expected matter of fact. Thank you might be riding every single race at keeneland today. nice to be in demand extravagant. Kid is a horse. You're going to be aboard in the WOODFORD stakes. That's is the first greatest stakes today. What can you tell me about. Extravagant kid very nice hard. I had the opportunity to ride him. One time before and we won he's doing very good very fox. Horse doesn't need to be on the late which is very helpful full on way like junkets. Today we think is very life so right to win all right and then in the next race in the TC a talked to me and I think I'm saying that name correctly but talk to me the horse. You're going to be aboard there. You've been aboard her. The the last two starts second last time out in the Press Kyle downes master stakes on September sixteenth. Tell me a little bit about her. It's very nice to write very easy last time. She has run very very very good. we are expecting seeming to or better than last two times. I think she got shut all right and then the first lady turn our attention there you go to the first lady stakes miss bad behavior for Richard. Balta says the Horse Year aboard. What do you know about her. I won on her Kentucky Down She got some sleep but he's he's also stayed on the race so let's see how they're they're in writing about her because she he doesn't need elite. Also g come come on. We gotta go pole so let a break and make sure shade in a winning position I during your yeah how much different is writing this keeneland turf of course then of course like Kentucky Downs Kentucky down says the undulating up and down configuration. How much different is it run getting more like we do every day. You know saying Kinda you you know over same thing by Kentucky different. Go Up and down left right so I think in Kentucky and it's all about the horse like it you WanNa be okay. It doesn't like nothing you can do about like well. Let's hope that this bad behavior likes the keeneland turf course later today in the classroom breeders futurity Max Field for Brendon. Walsh is the second time that Brendan will give you a leg up in a greatest stakes today. Tell me about Max field. You went on him last time out to very nice coat a win first time out very nicely actually that day a he was a speed favor drug. Nobody was coming from behind and he did which is very impressive to me so I think we have something here. We got very nice coats so hopefully put it together and stay undefeated talk to for to all right and the last one admission office This is a horse who you road last year but haven't been on them for the last four starts you get back aboard admission office and that is in the the shad while Turf Mile. Tell me about him. What you remember about writing him before is on very cool hope to ride very easy going on to be honest? I love him. I think we had a huge show the winds along really how come because I think he's is a nice source if their truck come from behind and here something other threats you about to rush these sorts. BEC- they're stretchy short here. I wouldn't have to we go. We got our loan stretching so I think it was the drug I mean he. He did alright at one eight zero. He don't good with Y'all yup so he's got big right now. You can tell what what makes Jose Jose Ortiz so good. He knows every race that these horses have run before he gets aboard and he did indeed win. Three starts back at Keeneland in the spring which Joel Rosario Dario Award winning an allowance race getting up by neck and admission office the Horses Jose will be aboard in today's Shell Turf Mile Jose. I know it's a busy morning. I know you've got horses assist works. I won't keep you thank you so much for spending a little time. Congrats on all your success. My friend and I'll look forward to catching up with us. We make our way to Santa Anita in about a month. Mike thank you.

Part 3: Jeff Siegel, Ed DeRosa, James Scully

"Jeff Good Morning Good morning how you doing excellent and lots to digest. We've already talked to the J ribbon earlier this morning morning. I want to get your take on what went on about the racist we discussed last week including the the upset which I think is less shocking talking than people. The people are are feeling. It didn't seem upon further review that Mongolian groom was all that impossible well. He wants to me I mean I thought he'd run well but I I really I'd watch McKinsey working. I thought he was ready to roll. Oh and just looking at the form I thought that he would win and he he moved to the top of the stretch like he was going to pounce and then he kind of flat out and I I always had a little sense of doubt that maybe he wasn't quite amount of quarterhorse but this is only a mile and they and I was disappointed and I think Bob Baffert with two do I really was an he's made in announcement that he's going to replace my Smith with a writer that we don't know who's going to be. I'm sure all the the agents are kind of hanging around trying to throw their hat in the ring but yeah I mean I it was I mean it's it's just it's the nature of the game here. We've you see this happen a lot and perhaps the real the real important racist coming up a month from now but if you've you know food for thought as to whether or not the horse that we also at least I thought was the number one older horse in the country. is really that much better than everybody else and amount of quarter. I think it's anybody's game now fold in as well the the result at the Jockey Club Gold Cup and what did you think of the takedown and who do you favor of the two of them coming out west well. I'll tell you what that I I was kind of hoping that it didn't come down and even I thought the three year old is going to win the race going in and what am I ran well. I thought he I thought he had every chance to get by but it was a tough. It's tough to lose a race lightweight like way when push came to shove and unfortunately for her also did come to push he he hung in there I think both both of those are deserving the universal. I'd come already come out west a winner racer over the summer so we subtract and so they'll meet again it's I I. I was talking about this. The other day was Zoe on our podcast and we we were pretty much not baffled. I don't think that's the way but kind of open to in trying to figure out who might win the plastic doors so many possibilities now so many horses that look like they're capable title stepping up some of them that look good or maybe vulnerable so I duNNo. We'll be watching the next couple of three weeks to see who trains the best. Maybe maybe we can come up with a conclusion but right now now. It's really a mess we'll wait till they get the decisions. The final decisions horses like a late and late would add another wrinkle visit I think they're thinking mile and a quarter and the boys aren't that top much tougher for maybe the midnight DC would be if he ran against her again and and a mile an eighth in the in the the staff so that would that would certainly make an interesting well a couple of other thoughts jeff about last weekend the reasons we discussed filled D'Amato just a of magical a couple of days pee wee reese on Friday mirth and Cleopatra Strike in the Rodeo drive and the John Henry able to Geo Story. I keep coming back to it because what can you say and then Sunday Paradise Woods and I ask you the same question that I brought up up with Jay and I asked Sadler too Sadler Sheriff's the other day if she runs that race of the distaff she's she's a major major player and I know she's a notorious in and outer but I thought that was a terrific effort it was it was accomplished under under pristine conditions sitting right outside a speed horse with nobody all rounder nobody in front of her nobody beside her with kind of like a workout for but she did feel the deal as she finished strongly and she earned a beyer speed figure that was something like eight or nine points better than they were not that that means anything but bottom line is she ran really well now whether or not she can do that again I don't know if he pointed out not exactly your model of consistency and I thought maybe your best days were behind her but boy did she work well and I I I yeah I mean you have to go. You have to think that going into the dispatch. This definitely has a legitimate chance I mean if she decides to show up with a game the thing that we're going to start talking about Jeff when when when I'm at clockers corner and and we're watching horses work and when we analyzed the the XP TV workouts leading up to the race between you and Millie Ah Zoe is going to be fitness levels and the one thing you're not going to have to worry about John. The sheriff's Baffert and Sadler is is fitness of these horses on that racetrack and that's going to be a huge factor and I'm I'M GONNA keep referring to the east coast horses that went to del Elmar for the Pacific Classic and God drowned on that deep surface and Steve Asmussen asked me to his credit with with tenfold he learned his lesson and went out early with Mottola because he is not gonna get caught on that element he wants his horses. This is ready to travel over that surface and it's going to be something we we really focus on and then I'm sure in the recap you know after breeders Peter Scott. It's GONNA come up well down. Mars is eat but it's it's not it's not any deeper than in Santa Anita where this is not the old Santa Anita track backwards you know three quarters in eight and change all all day long I mean you have to be did fit to run on. This track is deep. You just tiring you you have to train over it. I think I think it really helps and yeah I think it's going to be very important to to to watch the works and I I do think it's going to be a great advantage for horses to get in early and get a beast of one or maybe even to work over the drag your possible because it's it's not it's it's tough. It's it's it. It's deeper than New York and Belmont Park is I'm convinced of that and I know Belmont to be called the fanny and all that but this track is is big heavy. I mean it's the faith it's safe and that's why they made it so deep but you've gotta get through it and you gotTa. That'd be fit well. Let's get set to look at the weekend and before we talk about Saturday any any day maker ideas for today well. You know it's yeah I mean I I did do a couple of San Anita and I can give the a little bit of an insight today's tough but I like the Philly name swirling in the fourth race she's not the favorite averaged five to two zero six two five in there she's a late running turf sprinter that that I that likes attending through force and they're starting to run five and a half now in the first we've got a couple now they extended the shootout there so she'd found five furlongs on this course a little stripe and she was hitting the boy and running well but just running out of room now she goes five and a half and I noticed in the few couple of five and a half long since we've had so far that the closers have a better chance and she's she's good enough to win. and I think that extra half for a long we'll give her the edge that she needs so I'm looking at number two swirling in the fourth race to kind of heightened me over for that's my play play today. It's an okay car not a great guard but I think we can we can get some value there because she's not going to be the favorite it's excellent all right swirling today and Let's let's go to the weekend and obviously the steak the steak side of things Let's talk about talk about the city of hope I because it it it really is intriguing and I brought up with Jay earlier. Jeff the mixing and matching of older horses. I mean really veteran in six seven eight year olds like synchrony and Ohio and Bolo and catapult facing off against some horses that may be emerging What's your angle in the studio? It's really hard. I handicap this this race and I came up with about four or five that on their best day could win. synchrony is intriguing to me I think he's intrinsically the best of the group but he doesn't have a lot of tactical speed and going a mile on this course even though he's running the tool aww theoretically he could maybe draft into the mid part of the mid packing and save the nangle out and get through he tends to give himself a lot to do and I remember when he came out here for the CBS del Mar last November. The same thing happened. Do that was sixteen. He fell back. He he had some traffic trouble he got. That's where we finished. Fuller Ronnie finished thirty one but but he didn't get there so I I like him at five to one at synchrony shipper I I hope he gets the trip. If he doesn't then you can make a case for a number of these. I mean looking for fifteen to one shot number four on your program. Aziz restrained vengeance. He's GonNa get loose in the lead and if he does that he can be dangerous. TAT upholds training really well but he's form doesn't look all that well you gotta go back to the Kilroy Mile Back in March the finding good but at least it was over this turf fourth and he could pop up Sadler. He's five to one the raises a bunch of the race basically is is a bunch. That's a five to one shots hoping for good luck but I think maybe if he gets through synchrony can win I wanted to I wanted to like River Boyne off the lay off and then John White made him four to one and that that cooled my ardor well you know I looked at him him and he was a very good three year old and he hasn't won at four and haven't made a lot of progress at least according to his numbers and he goes from practice and I'm looking elsewhere. Let's put it that way you know a to go back to an angle from last week as that in fact Jay also came up with and Dash the other filled D'Amato player and here's able to do who the things that just seem to be running for Jeff at at least from what we saw last week while they they ran for a golden gate when he was leading rider up there and I talked to them for a number of years actually we had horses up there and he he wrote for us always felt that he was good enough but he was kingpin up there era and then he decided to make the leap and I thought it might be tough for them but it really hasn't he's really falling favor with the with the horsemen down here and he's a strong writer but he's a good rider as far as and dishes concern. He's coming off a nice win. Del Mar.. He's obviously never beaten this this group although he did run second Mendelssohn and his racing debut of that matters which it doesn't that was way back in two thousand seventeen at the Curragh but but he's he's he's developing. He's he's coming around and the way the model is going. I mean I wouldn't put anything past him and especially in a race like this in which really there is no standout and anything can happen so hey why not wanting to watch a couple of other thoughts. what do you make of this chance Salat Omaha beach matchup the very very different set of three year olds against elders in the in the sprint championship wells twelve sheds lots four to five in the morning line because he's not only the fastest horse in the race in terms of numbers but he's also look controlling speed and he doesn't even have to go that fast my my concern was and it's kind of happened in the Jerkins a little bit then I know that the inside part of the wasn't particularly hit that day but they kinda slowdown down twenty three flat forty five and and he's fast horse and I think you gotta use his weapon and I think going three quarters. They don't have to worry too much about you. Know saving reading anything so I I would suspect he'll bust out there and go. He had a nice breeze over the track. I think Navarro did the right thing by bringing them out early and breezy had a half and forty. He's seven and one third fastest at sixty five last week and he lied did it. The right way looked like he was relaxed like he got over the track very very well so he's going to be it really hard for Omaha Beach the rundown although I my theory about Omaha beach is that he's always wanted to be a sprinter and because he was so good and all the money's going long long that Richard Mandella kept running them wrong and why wouldn't he won the rebel in the Arkansas Derby any may have even able to win the Kentucky Derby had come down with the trap Levada brought his only sprint race of his career only race of seven that he actually sprinted

"Exceptional and and that the as i wrote the more i looked at that race the more it felt like what's the point of of taking the favorites because the mile and a quarter we talked so much friday about the mile quarter distance obviously dunbar road answered it in spades but in the pacific classic he had horses that had never won had had a mile and a quarter only tenfold had a mile and a quarter win a war story who had all kinds of buzz for some reason never never hit the board at a mile quarter how do you how do you embrace that exactly. <hes> it just didn't make any sense you had acquitted at only really one run wants a you know in that range in the preakness pavel oh for eight one second two-thirds so why is seeking the goal seeking the sole was what eighth in the dubai world cup but at least he he had pedigree with the seeking mayor and at least there was a pedigree there that said okay mile and a quarter higher power. You didn't have to wonder about higher powers hours eligibility at the distance and and so i i went in that direction with higher power and campaign.
