Proposed federal law seeks to limit skyrocketing salaries of college coaches
"Well anyway. I I call one of your stories. He's just week. We're talking about salaries and congress trying to put a cap on things and you. Did I think a an amazing. I don't know how you doug all this up. A deep dive live into the evolution of coaching salaries. Take us through that process. Yeah I one of the one of the most interesting thing about college. Football is how in twenty twenty I guess in our in our myopic nature point twenty we think that we all have these like little arguments novel discussion Russia. We've been doing this thing for one hundred fifty years at this point in time there are quite a bit of things that just are not new and some of that is complaining about too many bowl games but another one of those things is talking about how coaching salaries are way too high. I mean it's it's it has quite literally almost almost always been like this. I mean Amos Alonzo Stagg at Chicago making six thousand dollars in eighteen eighteen ninety two now I went back and use the consumer price report and price some of these salaries out in you know twenty eighteen at the time buying power. And you know. That's six thousand dollars. Amazon does stag was making then was worth like a hundred and sixty thousand dollars back in eighteen. Ninety two there has always been this separation between what highly paid college. Football coaches made Versus what the Common Man Colombian mix. You know I'll I'll bring it to your audience and hit them home like bear Bryant when he's doing. Brian show that that famous Sunday highlight show That that became formative so formative for a lot of Alabama fans. He wasn't doing that just out of the good report he was because he was getting paid there Bryan getting in pay. That's why I thought he. I thought you said he was a benevolent. So I believe you remember this because you weren't born but he also had to Eat the potato chips and drink cocoa which by the way had bourbon in it. Yes absolutely I mean like bear. Bryant was Bear Bryant was cheering the back right now. Yeah so I find it amazing we we. We had a professor on earlier who who was very much a part of the Donna? Shalala Team Wanting to limit coaching Ching salaries so When did they make the big turn? When did they start going? I mean as as some of the critics say out of control to me. It really doesn't matter what any of these guys make but TAKE A. When was the big turn? I think they really and truly exploded in the nineteen eighties because in the nineteen eighties. That's when that Supreme Court hate happened with like Georgia Oklahoma and you know they got. TV rights You know they divorced the TV rights from the NCAA and schools colleges then became able to go. She ate television rights As entertaining defended themselves. Obviously than we get into the CFO era and BCS. And what we have now where the SEC. Disperse what was it. Six hundred and fifty some odd the million dollars yesterday give or take a few million yeah To all fourteen member schools. I mean look. The bedrock of this cannot be overstated. The bedrock bedrock of this is this when you as an Athletic Department at Florida Alabama at Lsu is Florida state when you do not have to pay your labor force when you do not have to compensate you or athletes. That money has to go somewhere now. That money goes to beyond coaching salaries. I mean that's the facilities race that is everything. Everything that makes these college will programs at opulent as they can be obviously a really really big part of the PIE now. Is Coaching salaries. Now Coaching coaching salaries the early eighties. That's stuff starts to get reported. That's my really really starts coming into Coming into the sport in a way that it had really really before that By the time you get through the mid nineties Florida's paying Steve Spurrier the one of the first billion dollar contracts so that he doesn't jump to the NFL at that time honestly the NFL itself explodes. You've got that competition. So it's it's the competition that that spurs in any industry the street Salaries and money and will lose those things but the early eighties. I think is where we can really pinpoint when college athletics kind of started growing up from a from a fiscal standpoint talking to Richard Johnson from a better society in now we all know what is going on. I'm interested where were you. Were you sit on this. Because the the so called Donna. Shalala proposal We heard Professor Ridpath on this would would curtail a lot of things I find find. It somewhat amusing chancellors and presidents at Private Schools More so than public schools making. I'm five six million dollars a year We have an offensive and defensive coordinator is making major seven figure salaries I know is a highly paid journalists. Where we're we're are you on what Shola is is attempting to to do at least down one lane in Congress right. I think you have a good point. the the facilities boom and the salary boom of coaches collect directors and the things that we coach Sports Mirror. That of what we see on the institutional side at a lot of these verses and I think that is one thing thing that really gets lost you know like you said like g Foreign President of like West Virginia. Like these guys make guys and girls make six figures seven figures. There is a lot of money in higher education in the United States at the highest levels. college athletics is it is not an outlander But like studies have shown time and time again going back thirty forty fifty years that when your football all team is good when your basketball team is good It becomes you know they always say that is the front porch of the university. Admissions skyrocket when athletics. Do well and that is. Why a lot of these University of course than anything else I think? Put Up with and we'll pay out the nose for Nick Sabin or Jim Harbaugh or a Davos. We or whatever I think the dirty secret is is the weight from Ro a lot of these endowments in some of these very popular. Schools would shrink a lot more than people wanNA realize. No I mean just look around. I mean boone pickens. She died recently. I mean the the amount of money that he put into Oklahoma state and I don't I don't mean to disparage Oklahoma state in stillwater Oklahoma. Oh my been there. And if you haven't Richard Make sure that you put that on your bucket list. Wouldn't it wouldn't have had that type of money And and a lot of these Jerry Jones. He's given to the University of Arkansas. You can go down the list And I mean and it's because of one thing we're trying to win in in in college football or basketball depending on on on where you live and what part of the country you're in. Yeah absolutely I saw a stew. MANDL's works in the for pretty athletic. He He has a college pat column and somebody asked him Ten million dollars. What would you do with it to build a staff? And I look the question and I was like look man if you WANNA compete with Alabama Lsu Clemson Oklahoma Ohio state. You need more your salary. You Pool has to be bigger than ten million dollars. I mean on on its face. You'RE GONNA have to pay a coach at that level. Five five and a half six six billion dollars. You'RE GONNA have to pay your coordinators eight hundred nine hundred thousand dollars because Dave Aranda was was pulling such a salaried Lsu a few atmosphere necessarily because he was such town defensive coordinator which he is but it was because one opinions coordinator so that the only job job they'll leave for is a G. Five or or power five kids coaching job. It's got bulletproof coordinators. I WANNA lose them. I don't want to take collateral. If they leave me they gotta take step up so okay. You're paying both your coordinators Like one point eight billion dollars between the two. That's like eight million dollars. Just gone to the head coach in coordinators. Now you're in another like five million dollars higher director staff your eight assistant coaches which is all right. That's your ten assistant coaches You want to compete with Georgia Alabama. All right we'll have a party because you have to fill out the rest of those staffs with analysts. We assist tense You know you gotTa have a staff of three saw guys kind of the shadow. Coaching staff that that Alabama kind of those famous or infamous. No matter how how are depending on which by the fence you went on but You know it takes money to keep up with the Joneses and it takes a lot of line really want we national championship. Always great to have you on Richard other than chicken. What's the what's the second most favorite food that you'll be serving the super bowl party Sunday lady a friend is bringing some guacamole? She'll be homemade guacamole. I'm not a big block fan but you know you know how this you gotta try say like it. So that'll that'll it'll be my My side dish. I cannot wait I if I'm in the neighborhood I'll just drop Bil- bring some bring bring a some some fruit cake leftover from Christmas. I couldn't give away Gringa fruitcake. Brings some cold ones man. I'll have seat for you right on the couch next to meatball. Thank you great. Great to talk to you again come back soon. Have you

"Head coach Steve Spurrier leads the Orlando Apollo's into San Antonio for a clash with the commanders. It's the alliance of American football on the twenty four hour home of CBS sports. I find it. Interesting to say, the least that that leak about Colin Kaepernick in the af came the night before this settlement with the NFL to say, I find that interesting and twenty million dollars was what was reported as possibly his demand. Let me say a few things about that really quickly before we get back into the bigger discussion, which is his settlement with the NFL and your take away from that at eight five five two one two four two two seven when it comes to the af why would he ever play in the af I mean, I think we talked about that league on the show last week? It's not not dissing the league. But. Cap is not a developmental player. Not. No one else is being asked to prove themselves in that fashion. Why would he go out there with people who are not highest level professional offensive lineman for a salary that does not? Measure up to what would be the risk of playing. It just doesn't make no one's asking any of these other guys to do that. As far as money one every whether it's twenty million dollars. I can't even fathom how much you'd actually be worth to the af could you imagine that the publicity for him playing in a game. That would be that'd be all over everywhere, including like, CNN and MSNBC their publicity would be enormous. But another wrinkle, I find interesting about it. If the demand actually was twenty million dollars that may have been on purpose that may have been done legally on purpose because of the suit with the NFL where his lawyers, I'm sure we're representing him as a starting caliber NFL quarterback based on his profile forgetting everything else. You just look at the typical profile it fit in saying superstar my saying anything, I'm not going crazy guys. But it fit a starting NFL quarterback. And that's twenty million dollars. Right. So his lawyers may have been saying and is representation, you should not accept. Anything less than your market value? And now. None of us know, but we can only speculate and smart people are speculating in reporting that this settlement from the NFL likely worth well more than twenty million dollars. Probably. Closer to the range of sixty seventy million dollars, perhaps even north of that. Which is a huge win for him, obviously financially. And was the purpose of what he was doing. Like, you have to separate this grievance with the NFL and the 'cause he's protest. They're independent. They're not the same. He was never protesting. The NFL. Colin Kaepernick was protesting the NFL. He was suing the NFL because he couldn't have his job. He was protesting other things what he does with that as an activist with his platform. That's his responsibility. You know? I think the guy actually I don't think he had any idea how big this would become when he started. And I think he grew into it to be honest with you because I think some of his biggest mistakes were at the very beginning of this. You know, the things he did that that people that rub people the wrong way, you know, some people some people are going to be rubbed the wrong way, regardless. But I'm saying that like legitimately weren't a great. Look the pig socks. The Castro shirt the stuff that rub people the wrong way. He did that at the beginning of it. And I think as he realized what this was becoming he at least from the outside looking in. I don't know the guy or anything like that. I it seems to me he grew into that role and started to realize the significance of what he was becoming. At the same time. There was the battle with the NFL, but the battle with the NFL was not what he was protesting for the battle with the NFL was over not having a job and that battles.
Alliance of American Football: Week 1 Highlights
"Producer Robert did you watch either one of these af game tonight. The alliance of American football. I had the San Diego and San Antonio. That one was fifteen to six I believe San Antonio wins. And in a low scoring game was only one touchdown. But Orlando the Orlando Apollo's coach Steve Spurrier, they defeat Atlanta. Forty two six Robert I'm watching the highlights. So, you know, the old Phillies special they ran on the Super Bowl last year. They ran the Orlando special the double reverse pass back to the quarterback. And boy is that typical Steve Spurrier for a touchdown. Orlando winds forty two six, and you know, it's interesting looking alliance of American football everybody I like in the gym this week or out and about talking to friends about sports. Nobody even knew that they were starting up this week or that there was any such thing as the af. And I said, you know, I think this is pretty good timing. Right after the Super Bowl, people are still football crazy and they're getting their start right away here. Then you look at some of the coaches, Rick neuheisel's, coaching, Arizona. Mike single, Terry. One of the great linebackers of all time. And by the way, I'm a San Francisco forty Niners spent a horrible head coach coach. The Memphis express Steve Spurrier as we mentioned coach in the Orlando Apollo's Dennis Erickson. Again, be being a forty Niners fan another lousy coach Dennis Erickson, he's coaching the Salt Lake City stallions, Mike Riley, the former Oregon state Nebraska coach goats in San Antonio commanders. Mike Martz who we were joking about earlier coach in the San Diego fleet. And Michael Vick is the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta lessons who only scored six points tonight and got blown out by arlando. Okay. You look at the af. And they're not gonna try to compete with the NFL. And they've already made that clear they want to be a feeder league and provide players to kind of be a minor league of the NFL. But at the same time provide some entertainment here and. You know, we love football, the two most popular sports in America are the NFL and college football one and two and it's not even close followed by the NBA at number three. A hundred million people just watch the Super Bowl and their philosophy is know eighty million people don't watch sports again after the Super Bowl if you can get a big chunk of them still watching football. Maybe they can stick around a little while. But here's some really interesting things. Let let let's go over some of the rules in the af no kickoffs. And I know the Commissioner of the league today said he's pulled everybody has everybody. He knows and people are always telling him that the kickoff. It's the most boring play in football. So they got rid of that. And they're just going to place the ball on the twenty five on the twenty five yard line after scoring place. Now, I think right away. That's a huge mistake. That's just wrong. The kickoff is the most one of the most exciting place in all the football. Not boring. What makes it boring is? When you move the kickoff up to the thirty five yard line the way the NFL did. And there's never any returns when you blasted through the end zone all the time. That's boring. Move the kickoff back to the twenty five yard line. Which is what the NFL should've done. The NFL move the ball the wrong way instead of moving up from the thirty to the thirty five they moved it back to the twenty five then you're always gonna get returns. And the kickoff is maybe the most exciting play in football. So that's a big mistake. And that's wrong. Now, they're also having no onside kicks the entire game. So you say to yourself. Well, what if you're behind what if you're desperate and you have to get an onside kick. Well, there's no kickoffs. How are we going to do that? So so Robert, you know, how they've solved that problem. Have you read about this rule? I haven't read about this rule at any time. You know, they put the ball in the thirty five yard line where they kick off. What normally kick off would be. And they call it fourth and ten convert you keep the ball. You get one play to get ten yards instead of an onside kick, that's not bad. That's an interesting rule there. And that gives you a much higher percentage of converting than an onside kick one play trying to get tenure. So and then if you don't get it the other team gets the ball on your thirty five. So you're giving up field position. So I don't know how often you would try that. But certainly if you're behind I say, you leave the offense on the field and go forward onto fourth and ten situation. So the kickoff thing I think it's stupid because the kickoff an exciting. Just gotta move the kickoff back in ensure that they're going to be returns. The no onside kick. I like that one play fourth and ten if you convert you keep the football. I like that. I also would have gotten rid of putting if you're not gonna have any kickoff why not get rid of? And you gotta go for it on four thousand every time. Now that would put some strategy and excitement into the game. Wouldn't it? If you weren't allowed to punt see I'd get rid of the I get rid of putting before I'd get rid of the kicker. I would keep the kickoff but move it back to the twenty five yard line. And I get rid of quality. You have to go for it on for you got four down to make ten yards. No punting. They have no point after touchdown kick. You have to go for two every time which I think is another good rule the play clock instead of thirty five seconds. Thirty seconds. Let's will speed up. The course of play. Hopefully now, they've got the skied judge who is a way up there above the sidelines. And you can correct officiating errors and one thing. I liked tonight early in the game San Antonio through one. I feel that it looked like a long game. But his foot could have been out of bounds. It was close. And instead of putting the camera on the referee on the sideline and you can't hear what's going on. And then it's quiet for about a minute or two then he makes his ruling they've got the camera up on the guy in the booth making the decision, and you can actually hear him corresponding with the referee down the fields and talking with each other. Then you hear the whole process of how they're going to make the decision on whether to reverse it or not now I liked that. That was interesting and entertaining. So you've got the sky judge. You've got the play clock at only thirty seconds. You have to go for two every time all good. The no onside kicks, but they give you a one down to get ten yards to keep the ball. I like that rule. I would again, I would keep the kickoff. And I get rid of that. I think that's that's a mistake. They made. And by the way, no halftime. Which is another good thing. They just after the second quarter ends they go to a commercial break and they start up play right again. Is there anything more boring than at twenty thirty minute. Halftime break. I like that too. And there's no TV timeouts another positive anything where there's less time outs. No halftime and speeding up the pace of play. I love it. So all good except except for that that the kickoff. They should bring the kickoff

"But I talked to Steve Spurrier junior up top the Spurrier word illustrates the play as we call it. And discuss it in select a play then Dave Nichol who's on the sideline but over here's what the headsets then sends in the personnel. And and then we'll once they're in then we'll kind of comment speculate a little bit. But as soon as the place over, you know, there's kind of an order to things in other words like you get to speak. Now, you get to speak then together, we'll speak later type of thing. Do you know because it is football, you know, one day, and I love baseball. But one difference between football baseball, you know, their stack of the helmets a certain way, the first baseman comes off Utah is all right. Yeah. You know, you bring the hat and his glove out to the hitter, the play cts, you know, football football and have time for any of that. I mean, it's just there's a certain amount of organized chaos that goes on there 'cause there's so many moving parts, and you gotta throw gotta throw touchdowns and score and win coach. I love you. Enjoy your a Mexican dinner and good luck against the dogs. I always love avenue on his show every year. You're the vast. I'm always falling for you. Well, thanks a lot. And I love being on your show. So anytime. Yeah. Anytime you're bored. Call me, I will college Leauge. I love you, brother. Good luck Saturday. All right. Thanks bubba. I dare you. No from Jimmy Johns. Three three grains up Brad threes on enough. How about four four grain who wouldn't want grains, Jimmy Johns Dylan? Oh, let's go by five six seven eight one to make it Ryan eight Jimmy John still. No, all right. What about nine non-grain? We ramsey. Yeah. We'll take it. That's Jimmy Johns. New nine weeks up going once going twice. So.

"So take me back to what do you me? I've got you just meant there raising the standard of what they're going to say fits into a finding. Yeah, that's if you use the bond for only correction, which works in certain situations. One of our early guests on the show who worked on a lot of genetic status said, oh, we use the bond for Oni correction, and why after you know, isn't very strict. She was like, yeah, but we have huge sample sizes, so it's easy for us to achieve statistical significance. But in other cases, you might not have huge data sets. And so there's a family of techniques called false discovery rates. And finally, we're getting your topic for today, false discovery rates. This is like kind of an alternative method to the bond for Oni correction. It basically says, let's just control for the number of errors. We might. Get if we do a bunch of tests. Yeah, some of them are going to be spree asleep positive, but as long as we have a low rate of which we see spree asleep, positive things we can be happy. So let our Spurrier his findings. A Spurrier's finding is one that appears to be supported by the data, but is not generalize. -able likely there would be like, maybe you could be studying car crashes and you could say, oh, a people that have iphones they got more accidents than people have Android, but that's a plausible mechanism, right? Maybe there's something about the iphone that you know notifies people in a certain way, and it's more distracting and there's more drivers that therefore getting accidents. I don't think that that's true. Just hypothetically, it's it's not impossible. It could be that iphone people getting accidents more often or that could just correlate. Maybe you know the people who choose to buy phones also choose to drive more radically which again, it would just it would be correlation causation, but it would be real in the data. If. If you look at enough variables, you know, maybe you look at what type of phone they have. You could look at what radio station they were listening to. You could look at whether or not they were wearing sunglasses or had the visor open, had the sun roof open. If you look at enough variables in some data set, you will find something that correlates. And then you'll be like people that have sunroofs they get more car accidents in your statistics. We'll tell that story, but obviously or not say, obviously, but one would assume that a sun roof really is not related at all to the rate of accidents. That makes sense. But I don't understand the data showing this. In person, interpreting the data wants to interpret it in maybe a not solid way. How do you actually know that it's not the best interpretation of the data, the optimum finding. Well, good question. So you don't necessarily ever really know that's part of the point of false coverage. You can only assess with some probability actually, that's not really true. You can know by repeating the experiment. So if I do some big study and I say that sunroofs cause accidents will maybe the highway safety commission can repeat the study. They can gather new data in if they gather new data and that new data doesn't reproduce the same result than it would cast doubt on my result. But of course reproducibility expensive. Okay, sir. Reproducibility is one away. They validate the other thing in getting more to our topic. If you don't necessarily have the luxury.

"Paula just real quick on snook. Was he the same guy who said who quoted Steve Spurrier that called you a Muckraker? He did. Have you talked to Steve Spurrier since then? Yes, I have. And what did Steve Spurrier say about saying that you were muck-rake. Steve common yesterday and said that is untrue. Never said it. Okay. And again, we was there a retraction written in his story. Well, I'm not looking for. I am by the way. I think everyone prosecution rests. People knows my mo- my relationship with Steve Spurrier and as buddy Martin pointed out when when he called me about it or I called him, he said, do you think these furry would have asked you to write the forward to his book if he thought you were a Muckraker? And I'm saying, I don't know, maybe would, but I. These, here's my surmise of what we're hearing. This snook is in the tank for urban Meyer. We know that we've read stories. This is the urban Meyer spin being circulated right now you you fire me or reinstate me that that's you would have thought. And again, we're all speculating on speculation, but, but after three weeks at home. Urban Meyer might have been more conciliatory but apparently showed up today with drawing a line in the sand because he doesn't believe he did anything wrong. Most football coach, you do not like to admit. They've ever done anything wrong. Antoine is in Michigan. Good afternoon. Are you doing Paul? We're doing great. Enjoying your show here and I'm joining everything about it. I was on there bought one day. I got cut off because the show was ending, and I was talking to you about dantonio in our urban Meyer supply this and I, you know, Pau I, I'm really, I'm really, really disappointed in Ohio State. He would all my Michigan man because it seemed like they just stormed everything out the window just to keep a guy that knew that this guy was whether on his wife beating his wife, you know, and you know, I got three daughters and one on today's ones day birthday Asha and I teach her about, you know, keep your hands to yourself and everything like that. And there's no room for domestic violence is just none. And they just keep, you know in like he'd done nothing wrong. And all these guys are. Over Myers, a good coach and he's done. He did something wrong. He kept his guy around and he knew this guy was beating his wife and I just can't. I. I don't know. I just can't get archaic it. I don't understand. I can't get it either. But you know, I in my mind, you're right. I. I think they look at it differently. I think if you're Arben Meyer and just trying to free associate here. You. Enabled him probably because of his grandfather. And then when you became aware of the situation, you told your boss and he said, you're good. Just keep your eye on them. I mean, I don't know. I mean, I can't. I, you always have to put in that situation Antoine. And I guess the question is, what would you do if if you were in urban Meyer situation, if you weren't his position. Guy. Reported a minute fire the guy because it's not gonna cost you my job. I mean, this guy could cost him his job. Okay. Let me let me let me offer one more thing. What. What reasons why, what what reasons could there be that you may not want to fire the guy. You've worked with them a long time. Maybe he knows things about you. But I look, Paul integrity can only go so far. If you, if you have nothing to hide, then you don't care what somebody says about you. Right? I don't care because I've been married almost twenty years and I have yet to have and I got through had yet to have domestic violence on the same way with you. Listen to somebody wants to investigate my my life. I don't care. I'm I'm pretty boring so they can. They can. They can go through every every every rock and every Email they. I mean, they may I, I want them seeing some of the emails I've had to say about Mark and John. But beyond that, I'm good. We'll take a short break thirty minutes ago. We may or may not have the verdict. Can we go all night guys? We can't. Okay. We'll just flip over to the.
