Chicago White Sox clinch winning season, plus current playoff field
"Turn your head because I certainly did over the past couple of days maybe I got washed up at a bit of college football, the NFL return and but I didn't realize the Chicago White Sox. We're now in first place in the American league central after going eight and two in their last ten games they are. Let's see a game up on the Minnesota twins who have figured things out and are now in second place in that. Leaves the Cleveland Indians losers of six straight all the way down to third place at twenty and twenty one and four and a half games out. So so the Indians have gone from first place in the division arguably the team to beat in the American League two. Now, a wildcard team outside of the top two in the division and four and a half games out just that quickly I mean, don't you know six in a row and when the white sox are winning four that's at least. Four Games in the last four days and with a deficit of four and a half, it's gone from a half a game to four and a half year. By the time Friday rolled around you have the Detroit Tigers at twenty and twenty six, and then the Kansas City royals at twenty and twenty eight. Neither of them are atrocious baseball teams, which honestly is a bit better than I had anticipated for both of them but neither of them are going to be infecting the playoff picture with their presence. Where do we go here? The Chicago White SOx thirty and sixteen winners of four, straight eight and two in their last ten they swept the Tigers this past weekend. Let's take a look at their scheduled down the stretch here. See who they have coming up. They have four with the Minnesota twins who I just spoke about being a game back. So this'll be a fantastic series between the white. SOX and the twins it'll be in Minnesota Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday some fantastic pitching matchups in those. Then they travel to Cincinnati to Cleveland and retell her for return home ver-. CHICAGO. So the white sox tough schedule down the stretch with clubs over five hundred and then the reds mixed in there. So we'll see if they can continue to play quality baseball they continue to be led by Jose Abreu. He's crushing the Baseball fifteen home runs. Forty eight RB is Tim Anderson is currently your Major League leader. In batting average, he'd be your batting champion at three, sixty two. If he qualifies in Thirty six games, one, hundred, fifty, two are bats I think he has just qualified fine when it comes to that statistic on the pitching side of things Lucas g Alito. Continues to pitch well, Dallas Kaikal not a lot of people talking about it but six in two two, one, nine era talk about a successful year Then you got mad foster coming out of the bullpen with a one three, one era so Chicago a well rounded team they were my surprise bic in the American league at least they got the memo because. My Cincinnati reds on the other side will get to them but they still haven't figured things out sell but hey, one or two in regards to surprise picks. So the summer I'll take that absolutely. Did I think they'd be a first place team I didn't think the white sox will be a first place team but I certainly thought they were good enough to. Make the wild card and make the playoffs. Now we're talking standard one, sixty, two, five teams but yeah, certainly a pleasant surprise on the south side of the windy city.
Trader Joe's Fall Products to (Pumpkin) Spice Up Your Shopping List
"Welcome to another of our short shopping list episodes. I'm Tara Miller director of words and phrases and clauses, and I'm Matt Sloan, the marketing product guy now just about everyone in every type of business has had to make adjustments during this pandemic but we're proud the trader Joe's has maintained a commitment to developing new products to giving you that sense of discovery on every visit. So, let the discoveries begin. All right hold on I'm just organizing. I don't even know where to start there. So many new products. What's purple on the outside creamy white on the inside and makes a Great Ship Donny Osmond socks no. Almost Masaaki sweet potatoes. They're not the normal sweet potato. They're not the bright orange sweet potato, their paler in color and flavor. Wise. I'm going to say that they're kind of like a roasted chestnut in obnoxious kind of way. But in a nice way like insists nutty sweetness these are great chips but wait met we sell. Masaaki. Potatoes in our protection when we can get them. These are delicious sweet potatoes people love them. They're great for you. You meant the sweet potatoes themselves. You mean in chip form that these should be considered some kind of health. Okay. These are potato chips, full disclosure, right So they come with all the caveats that regular chips do sweet potatoes themselves really good for you. I will stand by them. Those are probably in the store. Already I think those are coming in at the beginning of September or something like that, and they are limited because there's a limited number of these potatoes that can be made into chips. People associate trader Joe's with Pumpkins stuff in the fall. How about Pumpkin Spice Pretzel Slim's I mean this is a candy. Yes Pretzel but it's a pretzel that is swimming in really nice white chocolate with crushed pumpkin spiced pumpkin seeds and I think we're trying to figure out another way to Pumpkin on their one more time. These are just great. So if you like the peppermint. Pretzel Slim's. I think you'd be a fan of these to these are really tasty sweet with just a little salty. So you just WANNA keep coming back for more. Another thing. That is sweet. But I think not too sweet are the pumpkin spice batons that are coming in and those are kind of a very close relative to the cocoa batons that we have every day and the vanilla batons we have the villa batons. Do, and we've had coffee batons we lemon for awhile it's a wafer cookie with pumpkin spice filling inside I mean it's kind of simple and straightforward, but it's a you know kind of thing you could have with a cup of coffee or even some ice cream though should be in stores by the time. This podcast lands and folks should be able to grab those right away. They're just delicious when we're thinking about. What else to include as a Pumpkin version we often look to really popular products Brioche we sell an inordinate amount of that classic agee, Sweet french-style Bread. We have a Pumpkin Brioche coming I'm excited for this. I think French toast will never be the same. That was also super limited by the right like it's it's in and we'll have it for a little while, but it's not something that's going to be around for. You know months and months and months. That's our hope for infant works or it'll be a great. Saint. Patrick's Day breakfast and by that time it'll be green. So perfect. One of the things that was a big sort of revelation to me this year even though it's not something we invented it's not something we were the first to think of is the spicy pumpkin curry simmer sauce that's coming in. It's kind of inspired more by a Thai curry than Indian curry but it has all of those really classic curry flavors. With the addition of actual Pumpkin and it's like thick and it's creamy and it's got a really good kick to it. I'M GONNA. Say This is good. Right out of the jar actually with Yeah Yeah I can't wait to hear about how people put this to use. We are working on a recipe right now internally for a Vegetarian Spicy Pumpkin Curry potpie that we're hoping to have on our website and in the fearless flyer in late. September. Also, I think slated to be featured in an upcoming flyer many spicy Pumkin Samosas the. Sabih in the frozen section, this is not a Pumpkin pie situation at all. This is an appetizer wonderful bridge creamy spiced pumpkin filling. This does sort of flavor. Wise. Go more toward the Indian style curry Classic Somoza Spices are used this. These are delicious. They're really good with a number of different kinds of sauces has been a we've tried them with a Chutney but also with our sweet chili sauce, which takes its inspiration from Thai cuisine and the hot and sweet pepper Jelly these tastes really good dipped in any of those. I'm still focused and obsessed with Pumpkin Pumpkin Nada. Now, this is a Pumpkin pie situation. So think of a small Mexican inspired hand pie with delicious spiced kind of a classic spice, Pumpkin Pie Spice filling. So. Good. So not like spicy spice but like sweet savory spice, the spices more like our spiced apple cider or a traditional Pumpkin pie spice sat up I mean this would be great for breakfast I. Think because I like to have pie for breakfast you know pine a cup of coffee is a great way to start the day, and this is like a little pie. So it's like I'm just having a little Lil Pie wilpon. That's your new nickname. Okay.

Six months in, how are you doing?
"In thirty five seconds how we doing because when this thing started, we were talking depression and end of the world. Right so we we've seen the depression part I don't think we'll see the end of the will be. That's the good news. We but we definitely have seen an economic decline that's been at surreal levels. Just think two weeks of a march shutdown with enough to drive a first quarter. GDP. Down five percent on an annualized basis, and now, and then after that, in the second quarter, we saw thirty three percent annualized decline. So it's been truly remarkable in terms of the economic recovery though though the magnitude is severe and still. Severe? It's likely to be one of the shortest economic recessions on record for starting to see the momentum and quick bound said everyone talked about. But from here, it's still vulnerable and the path back to pre pandemic levels is likely to be a long one. Okay. So deep let's talk about the from here part and I point you to Capitol Hill this week and the Senate not able to pass. Its version of another relief package. Why Why question we always ask about Congress. We. We all know that the United States Congress tends to respond to fast moving urgent disasters the ones that are politically salient. The ones that create a create a the momentum they need unfortunately corona viruses becoming a slower moving urgent disaster still disastrous still awful. But it's not necessarily shocking people at the same pace that it did six months ago. That is I think. The big difference that we've become too almost accustomed to the apocalyptic world that we're living in. That's just it's just a weird sense who cares about the deficit at this moment but there are people who do and at least people who care about it from from an timeframe or from whatever form of of of of religious view they have on debt. So, there's always a chance that something could happen in the next few weeks. We don't want to write off Congress completely of course, remembered twelve years ago. There was a giant bail out of the biggest banks that asked Congress just over a month before an election, but it was right after it failed in Congress and took a giant tumble in the stock market to make to to show. Some activities something that looked real for lawmakers to respond to. We just haven't seen anything sudden and real to get people to respond and let me ask you about that slow moving part of this thing because I kind of agree with deep, it happened so fast and now it's become a long drawn out thing. The question is, can people can this economy wait until Congress gets shocked into action? There is a significant segment of the economy that can't wait. Those are the people who seen their unemployment insurance benefits expire at the end of July. Those are the people who may be facing addiction. In early twenty, twenty one if something isn't done to to stay continue to stay the evictions Those are the people who are. PART OF THE OVER A. Fourteen million Americans who've been affected by COVID job losses and you may still be employed but not getting paid. So there are several people who will be affected by a con Congress in a stalemate. What's not seemingly affected the stock market which continues to advance even if you get tripped up here and there and over a course of a couple of weeks, a socks and home prices continue to climb higher. So the impact has been a different. For different segments of the economy will do the stock market is clearly what's giving Congress the covered to not actually move right? I mean that's that's not much of a debate but let me get back to what you said a little while earlier, which is, let's keep an eye on the next few weeks. The you actually believe there's going to be relief action in this. Congress, before the election and if not how it not become a political problem. It it it. I think it's possible that we will get some some type of action just never know like all of these things come out of nowhere like we we would have expected that there would have been. More urgency a month ago or six weeks ago and that that there isn't a think as perhaps the most shocking political story of the moment that that they're not feeling it I do think some lawmakers are are aware of the risk. It had their democratic lawmakers who are screaming at Nancy Pelosi right now saying please pass something We're we're in tight races, but they're also Republican lawmakers who. Carrying on a narrative that the thing that gets out of this is grit and determination, it's not more money. It's it's it's like wrapping yourself in a flag. Maybe, not even with a mask. And and just just trying to like get just get through it and there's this idea that like that's the American spirit and that's the there. These really contrary views of what what the country needs right now that have been. And been become obviously polarizing but become ingrained in our in our minds collect way the nation. Quick. Just a rip off of that a little bit. You know Congress has been remarkable and its ability to pull a rabbit out of the hat in the last minute and what can't be denied. It's the political calculus going into whether or not to do this next round twenty Republican Senate. Seats are also up for election in November and so they have to be doing that calculus what happens to their? Their states, it's no more stimulus as passed. That's going to be part of the negotiations over the next few weeks as well.
Why Serena Williams just missed her last, best chance to win No. 24
"Gentleman. What happened to Serena Williams Victoria Azarenka, the latest player to step in between Williams and her record tying 24th Grand Slam? The airport. NASA wants to start a gold rush in space, so it’s putting a bounty on moon dirt
"To mine the moon and then sell lunar rocks and dirt to the space agency. For more. We turn to the KCBS Ring Central news Line and talk to CBS News Space consultant Bill Harwood. You'll soil and rock collection is this part of NASA's bigger plans to set up camp on the moon? Well, yes and no, it's it's really more of a proof of concept and an effort, you know, enticed companies to mind the moon, so to speak. What they're trying to do is set up a mechanism by which Company could go to the moon. They do some exploration find something interesting, and then NASA would buy it from them. So, so it is a mechanism by which a private company could then Tell something to the government that the government might want NASA views. This is a first step to setting up I don't know what to call it, not a lunar economy, but You know, private sector operation in space. You know, the outer space Treaty says no nation can claim a NASCAR nautical body. You can't go to the moon and say this is this belongs to me. Just like you can. You can own an ocean on the earth. You can pull fish out, right? And the same thing would apply to the moon. If you go look for ice, which is something that would help astronauts down the road kind of live off the land. Um, if you have a mechanism by which which companies could do some of the work for Dennis and then get paid for it is a private venture. That's the sort of thing this is looking to encourage. This sounds like a really big shift for NASA story is, if you think about it in the in the half century that people have been exploring space has never been Ah, framework by which you could do business in space. You know, everybody talks about what it costs. No fun to space program or whatever, but all that money is really spent between companies here on the ground. I think this is an attempt anyway, to encourage the private sector to think Maura about what they condemn in space and how they can make money doing it than the money in this case is very monitors between 15 and $25,000. For Little less than a pound of rocker soil. The companies would have to show exactly where it's located in market and photographic proof. They've got it in the nest. At some point down the road would go retrieve it and bring it back to Earth. So I think it's a little bit far out there right now, But it's a It's a step in that direction. And that's what mass is hoping to do with their Artemus Moon program, which is come up with a sustainable architecture for long term exploration. Interesting too, that the bidding as I understand it will be open. Not only just to U. S companies, but international ones as well. Yeah, that's right. Uh, certainly anybody can bid on this massive agrees to it. They pay you 10% up front. More when you prove you've actually done it, And then the final 10% when you get it when they get it back to earth, and look at it, Um again. I think this is ah. Pretty far out there in terms of what you or I would think of it as a business opportunity, considering what it would cost the company to get to the moon in the first place. I think it's more about setting up a framework by which you can do business in space. That's that's to go here. Always great to talk to you. That is CBS News Space consultant Bill Harwood. Sox

Politics of country we're going to pass on safety after November third every time I hear you till the story I feel like there is something a little bit more grounded in the way in which you tell your story, and I'm wondering if it is because you had this time to write this book and really reflect you've got a book coming called find the Helpers and before we get into that I, want to note The huge amount of praise. This book is already getting new have blurbs from members of Congress actors, activists, people from across the social and political spectrum, and they're all raving about it and I don't think in my life. I've seen such hype about a book even before it is released. So what do you think it is what do you think it is about finding the helpers that makes it so universally loved and also. Tell me about the process of writing it, and if it was Cathartic for you because I think we hear. So often people that tell stories an especially stories that are so close to your being your heart people always say you know it was Cathartic and it was their -Peutic for me to write. "Okay. So no one was above five for the ER a like that's not that bad of rotation buckles was pretty not good stretch of his career know it's not Joe Kelly still. It's still relevant Thursday and water and rigas. Everyone's telling me he's going to win twenty games again, which was crazy to think he's gonna win twenty games. Again Rick Porcello serviceable. I wish they brought him back this year at the price at Mets were paid him and Wade Miley home. Yeah, whatever. He's your Marty Perez Wade Miley actually after he left the Red Sox. He got better, but I'm still I mean like what's that? The five is the mark for being good place to park be good. Just like if you're under five that's not terrible, which is what we're seeing like there. There is a team right now is 616 I think like that's awful. Do you know what their run differential is wage differential is the worst in baseball by far its - 60. Okay, the Pirates have won ten games. I think I think it's thank you James. It's 11:00. Now, whatever. There's like - 4 or so, it's it's unbelievable. How much worse they are? I said, sometimes you gotta tank for Trevor Lawrence and that's what the Red Sox are doing. Apparently throw them out there. If Trevor Lawrence is a blame football game or get him on the mound use that use that Cannon because they would it be the most entertaining thing of this team this year again besides like Alex Verdugo is really I'm excited for that kids baseball future here. I think that job Actually got something going with especially cuz he was a Red Sox fan growing up. I think he's going to be a solid addition to this team baseball wise. I hope you're right. But hey, Tom. Thanks for coming on. Hey, thanks for having me man..

"There's a dog You should definitely see moved on from the obviously traded Mitch Moreland. But Martinez might have been the one that I keyed on the most and said he's got someone some team out there is going to need him. He's going be of use to them the faith in National League. Now it kind of because they didn't trade him that tells me that but it didn't get as many offers for them. Then they get the market they wanted for him. So if you're on Bloomberg, I just move on from them to move on from when you could possibly trade him in the offseason if he opts in, you know what I mean? So I think maybe they kept their options open as far that goes. Maybe they move on from some of the other names because they said I will get a better Market in the off-season Cristian Vasquez being another one. And by the way Christian baskets the more I thought about that was that's a power-hitting catcher. Those guys are kind of hard to find. So unless slowly Back-up Plan change not just give these guys away. So that's why I kind of warmed up to the weekend too high in bloom had when I think if you asked me two weeks ago, if the players are just listed off for the only ones that they traded I would have been. I mean, yeah, and you're so J D Martinez obviously is the most important one that you that brought up and I think he's an end up saying here cuz I don't think the Market's going to be as big for him as he wants. Especially wage not taking over the d h, but they're not going to fold. Eh next year, right. They're going back to regular season. I'd be surprised. I mean, I think remember they are but like with the players are going to say give us the full-time DH it creates more jobs going to create, you know more opportunities for those guys. There's no reason to have pictures hip. I mean, that's the other thing too. Like with this code would be a sport some of these things are working right the national like DH Works. Yes. I mean like again, I'm just a temporary host right now for the show. But as of right now with this is an anti pitchers hitting podcast. I am so against that but it's good for the business for Red Sox because that means JD Martinez If he if the national league ads in that DH roll JD Martinez Opt out because there's going to be now an extra gaggle of teams that are going to need a d h and a lot of them don't have a guy like JD Martinez just waiting there in the rafters. So they're going to go after him and throw him. There is a growing up. So it's good for the Red Sox right now that the NL does not have that or at least in the long term and out doesn't have that but going back to my point about these guys who are still on the team and what it means. I think the Red Sox, I think that signifies that the Red Sox know that they are not entering a full-blown rebuild like a couple of years ago..

In fact, there's one guy who I I worry cuz he's always been good but not great. But he's having a really good season this year and he's making a splash on social media and I'm a fan of him because he talks a lot of crap, but I am genuinely concerned that the Red Sox are going to go out this offseason and throw in overpriced amount of money at Trevor Bauer. I don't I don't think he's going to keep up what he's been doing. Yeah, I don't love Trevor Bauer. But again, you look around you're like, okay. Well if you don't look Trevor Bauer, what do you want? What do you want to do what he wants to guess you do it. Do you want him to go get three more Martine Perez's you know what? I mean? Don't get a guy who's going to have any outray between 5 and 6 maybe win 10 games in a regular thousand. Do you want three of those guys order to have something like Trevor Bauer who is a quality picture. He's also, you know throwing media standpoint. He's going to mix it up so he's good for business in that regard as well, you know, oh it into it for sure. Yeah, you know, so so why not I don't you love that idea. But sometimes you have to look around and say well it's the best available maybe go ahead and sign them. I'm not totally against it. Right and and especially when you look at the offense as a whole cuz and we talked about at the start of Season. Okay, if there's going to be one if the Red Sox are going to win games cuz it's 60 Game season Anything Can Happen. The Reds win games going to have be like thirteen to 2:13 to 12. The pitching isn't good. But the offense is really good really hasn't panned out that way especially when you have guys like Andrew benintendi who just aren't producing that the way that even close to what you anticipated the way that they would produce so the offense I don't think you have to do too too much too..

"And so maybe that was the mistake by bloom in the Red Sox was giving me a million dollar contract to Bradley to begin with and now you're kind of stuck with that. I mean if they had traded Bradley and eovaldi that's 27 million off the books Mookie Betts. Twenty-seven million this year, so it's not that simple, but yep. Do wonder if that was a mistake and the other trades makes sense? I mean Brandon workman's a pending free agent you get something for him Kevin flowers pending free-agent. You get something from you know, he temporary had another year left of a like that returned. They packaged him with workmen. That's always smart to do Moreland has a three million dollar option for next year. So you like that but he's getting older and he's going to be thirty-six next year. He's got a lot of injury problems. You got them all back in Michael shave. It's the place and first base you want to see what they can do. They all the moves to be made sense. There is no movement was like, oh my God, what a brilliant move. The only question will one was not trading Bradley. But if you can't if can't get anything for him. So I got the Red Sox the Red Sox did find one. They didn't make and here's where baseball just plays with our emotions. I mean if I were to tell you, hey, the Red Sox did not sign an old guy who was three four Thirty this year you'd say big deal. Of course, they didn't but then I say that guy's fault, right and everybody kind of loses their mind. Hey, you could have bought black holes back and may God. Old City happy for a month blah blah blah. I'm glad block got a job. I really am as you know, he's such a great guy but no surprise the Red Sox just throw on the line, right? Yeah, you know, I was a little surprised they need players. They knew they were going to be making trades. Why not bring it back. It's like, you know, absolutely what's the point in keeping players who are not going to be free agents. Anyways when you are not going to make the playoffs so essentially why keep Bradley and he said it's important to have a positive environment here to have a club house that breeds winning that game he seems to really like Jackie and contributes to that even if Jackie's going to be a free agent just having him here for another month can be helpful to the overall atmosphere on the right side. Don't tell me having Brockville here for another month. When I took the same exact thing and wouldn't have cost them anything. He was released. It could have been a very easy move for them. I believe he passed through waivers and was just straight-up release and then signed by the national so Thursday. It seemed like an easy move that they could have made and didn't and I do Wonder because Bloom shows essentially chose Jose Peraza over Rock bolt in the off-season. We see this all the time. There's a lot of stubbornness with general managers in baseball when they when they make decisions. They want to stick to them and ride out and they don't want to ever admit that they screwed up and I think you bring it back. There is a could be a sense of who well terrazza didn't really pan out. You know, should we have kept hold? I don't know. I wonder about that. So here's what I'm wondering now, too. I was talking earlier about the rampant anonymity that suddenly has taken hold with the Red Sox..

Well. Actually it was a long time ago. I was going to say not too long ago, but we're talking about the freaking 1980s now, I think Jason mastrodonato of the herald also from Rochester, he does not remember Sam Horn because I'm old and he's not old but I once saw him against the Tidewater Tides with a 5 home run a doubleheader. It was just a remarkable thing to behold. I mean you guys know about Sam Horn better than I do. But other first home run games for the Red Sox not too many of them. Danny Shafer had one back in eighty-seven only nine ever. But anyway dalbec had one on a total golf shot just a little slice down the right-field line just inside the pesky pole. Nobody knew it was gone. It a 48-month Degree launch angle meaning just a towering pop up is all this was but that was a good day. Sunday was a good day. Kevin plawecki had never been on the field for a Red Sox win Owen eleven when he played and that's not fair. If you've actually had a pretty good year but Red Sox actually won the weekend series their unbeaten in their last 4 Series heading into what they've got with Atlanta right now and look at thier one and twelve against the Yankees and the Rays is here, but they got a winning record against everybody else. That's one way to to put that if we want to shine a nice light on it but back to dalbec I hope he's something the guy that comes to mind for me since I'm still dating myself and telling you how old I am or with every one of these Sam Horn Recollections. You guys remember creating gubanich. That's who that guy reminds me of the he was a big strong kind of Catcher slash infielder type late 1990s and went to Mike piazza's High School, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. And he was supposed to be something never was he had a home run maybe two or three games into his career. I'm looking it up right now. Hang on. Oh, yeah, here it is. This is an amazing game the Red Sox and 99th, which is such a fun team top to bottom. I know I'm viewing all over the place here, but the 1999 team think about it. I mean, it had Pedro's twenty three and four with a 2.07 313 Girl Scouts, which is still a record for the Red Sox. No more want to batting title hitting 357. You have the All-Star game at Fenway. David came up and got big hits Mike Stanley had a great year. They were down to nothing and it's just 5 in the playoffs outscored Cleveland 32 to 10:00 from that point on their rotation other than Pedro was an absolute hot mess who was Pat Rapp Mark Portugal. Jinho Cho San in Rose Wakefield was a closer perhaps the season That season was nuts. So the Creighton bubonic game the Red Sox behind a gubanich homerun took a seven. Nothing lead in Oakland, New Jersey. Early in the year and then they gave it all away..

And we'll. Finish up with Collin McHugh. Guy That I got to know what the mets when I came up and just a really thoughtful insightful guy sharpened his sword. Houston Astros, because I love that spin rate on his curve ball. It's a big if if he's healthy. But he can certainly contribute as well and what's going to be? Let's face it everybody an absolutely strange nine weeks. That's all this is. It's basically a nine week season. And I, it's a race to see not only who can get to that thirty six wind total like we discussed, but who can stay sane who can do the little things necessary to just kinda tune out the drumbeat of no drumbeat. There's not going to be real fans there. There's going to be fan noise, but was the psychology of that can be all about. There's still so much that a lot of people I mean. Certainly the players have to to get to here and think of this like an NFL season this year if you start out twelve eighteen. Dusty equivalent to being three and five if you're the Patriots and As. We know unless NFL team goes seven and one down the stretch after three and five. They are cooked at that point. So getting out to eastern start and having a lot of orioles on the early schedule here, that should help, but They cannot stumble like they did last year. Remember that terrible open road trip. That was my introduction of the Red Sox by the way. Hi, I'm your new announcer with Joe Castiglione? Oh, they're gonNA start to and eight I hate this guy and just to leave you with this. He had fourteen defensive runs saved for the dodgers. Last year was a positive sixty s when he added to play left field, and he can play centre as well. There's a lot of guys can in theory play center, which is great to have, and now like you gotTa platoon here. He's actually hit lefties a little bit better than writings in his career. The O. P. S.'s two points higher against lefties. Surprise to find out after that should be at least on opening day and second base. Known up. Peraza, Jose Peraza and by the way Pedroia is going to end his playing career with a batting average of two ninety nine. What a shame! It was at three hundred, and then he came back, he tried to play. He didn't play well. He was heard obviously and these. Ninety nine Peraza to thirty nine with Cincinnati last here from pokey reese to Brandon. Phillips we've seen former reds, middle infielders come to Boston and compete before and the coaches seem more impressed than you might expect with Jose Peraza. There's kind of a pedestrian guy when you when you look at his stats, but Ronchi says we love him, and you swing has been great great vp is. Is GonNa be the second Baseman here and he can get starts at short and third win. Zander and Rob Evers need days off finally we go to number nine in the order. That's your center fielder contract year number Nineteen Jackie Bradley Jr. Now Forty Games in last year. He was hitting one forty four forty games this year. That's two thirds of the season, so that can't happen. You Love Jackie Bradley Jr... Now Jackie Bradley the third undersized in high school. We were just talking about Dustin Pedroia and there's a lot of that with Bradley wasn't invited to the prominent showcase events. He went undrafted as a high school senior, but when he gets going as you mean. How many guys are on their resume? have it that they flirted with a thirty game hitting streak their batting ninth in somebody's batting order. Last year, Jackie ended Ryan Presley streak of forty consecutive scoreless appearances, a monster home run so hopefully a nice bounce back over all year for J. B. J. on the bitch. Couple of catchers to clue you and I'm Kevin. Will wear twenty-five out of purdue former met former Indian Jonathan Lukoil will wear number twelve. This guy was fourth an MVP to balloting not too long ago for Milwaukee's thirty four years old now is coming off neck surgery, but his old before the next thing and all the other injuries has opie was seven eighty four when he was healthy? It's been six sixty six ever since. Little pause in the action here just to talk for a moment about something. That's not all that easy to talk about. Nobody loves talking about erectile function. Just I'm GonNa just talk extemporaneously about each one in left field number sixteen Andrew Benintendi. It was supposed to be the leadoff man last year. It never really took, but here we go again, and he never turned the corner at all last year I mean it every step very much like the entire club. He was grinding, trying to figure it out, but he was missing a lot of pitches. strikeouts last year. Obviously, that must improve third base number eleven game program Rafael, Devers boy where to restart more line drives off bad than anybody else in baseball last year, two hundred and thirty five of them say the Poindexter, with the slide rules the the most extra base hits in a season by red sox player ever last year Rafael Devers had ninety Ted Williams. Never had more than eighty six did that in his famous nineteen thirty nine season when he was just coming on. Nomar Garciaparra Ninety seven at eighty-five Ted Williams get the list in nineteen forty. mookie made the list not in two thousand eighteen, but in two thousand sixteen was seventy eight divers had ninety. Last year and some of the best hands in all of baseball, though as able to respond to pitches, the defense certainly has gotten much better. He really turned the corner after that costly ninth-inning error in Chicago early May last year. He talked to Adrian Beltre on the phone and somehow got his mind, right. Guy had no home runs three runs batted in his first twenty four games last year and ended up where he ended up all right batting third your shortstop number two. Zander Bogart's who actually finished last in some of the defensive metrics among big league shortstops last year, but is blossomed in one of the best players offensively in the game. He was on base more than two hundred and fifty times last year, fifty, two thirty three home runs seems like he's absorbed the same lesson. His Jose Altuve The walks have almost doubled the last four years now he's doing major major damage, and we talk about finding another face of the Red Sox and Boston sports, really because Brady's not here Gronk, snotty or Cetera et Cetera. Then Zander Bogart's is the guy that's already got a couple world series titles on his resume, and there's the personality because the type of guy that people should be drawn to. Your cleanup man. You're D. H. Number Twenty eight Jd. Martinez going to get back to the production of twenty eighteen. He always mashes lefties. He's going to do that again. At four four against lefties last year, two thousand eighteen was three thirty batting, average, forty three Homerun, hundred and thirty run batted in season. I mean obviously that's a lot to ask for even pro-rated, but I'm fascinated by JD Martinez who by the way still a has no walk off home runs. Can we get one of those? Charlie Culbertson has four. Of Twenty three total home and his career Martinez is no walk off on two hundred and thirty one home runs, but after he washed out with the Astros in two thousand thirteen. A great story because it was sending a lot of time in the trainer's room had bad wrist the ESPN feed..

Say Six. Oh five winning. Winning percentage so thirty six wins is what you got. Get this out of sixty. You can't afford something like five or ten starts. I mean you'd have to play basically better than the eighteen red sox did at that point to go forward just to get in, so let's get out of the chute against the orioles right high feeling about native all these reopening day star five point nine nine. You say goodbye to a couple cy, young winners and Al Mvp World Series Mvp Potential Hall of fame closer, the fan favourite Brock Holt is gone. I mean even Water Nunez. For a while, so we'll break down. What is on tap for these Red Sox are twenty twenty shortened season as it may be no guest this time. This is just me talking to you about the lineup, the rotation the bullpen and we'll see if you agree with the assessment and give you some things. You probably didn't know, too. It's always the goal. Hey, there's there's no shortage of action going on at our exclusive. Exclusive Partners Online sports. There are making their way back. They've been there with a UFC NASCAR soccer leading the way they've got the best odds in lines for the upcoming matches this weekend. In fact, ESPN is back, so look for that. They've got more.

"Like. If I was the red sox I would have thought that more employees would probably wanted a furlough, but you know they're they're now. You know taking less money and still working and doing doing you know is. Is Much as they're expected to do so. Yeah, it's a difficult situation and you know we're seeing teams throughout the League doing it and I understand why A mass live put Did furloughs for a week? Everybody did a furlough. A bunch of media companies are doing it i. mean you know if your business is losing advertisement or other? That were just you know sales if it's a store? I mean if it's a restaurant and stuff I, mean it's difficult, so you have to do something I just think that furloughs ribbon better in this situation for some of these people instead of having to force in, give up all their. You know to give up some of their salaries a large percentage. Yeah and you know as much as I wanted to kind of swing towards some positive talk here I. Really Am big on that with all. That's going on in the world right now, but. I'm looking around and just on the subject of nickel and diming I'm looking at the nationals he talked about. You. Know things that you you could have done a little differently. Total News Dump Right I mean on a Friday afternoon with every city in the country, basically burning with race riots. That's when they basically decide. Well, let's announce it now that we're going to take everybody in the minor leagues from four hundred a week down or excuse me four hundred a month down two to three hundred, and I'm thinking. I don't know if you can nickel and dime worse than that I mean. Why would you WANNA save one hundred bucks? What what's what's the use of that? I mean especially a week ago. You shoot. Everybody knows big glitzy world series rings a cost, a JILLION dollars. What are we doing here? That's ridiculous. It really is I mean. I mean. How much does that really as you said? How much does that relieve in save in the long run? And what does that tell your minor leaguers you're trying to you know you're hoping will help you out major leagues, obviously I mean I chocked Josh Army. WHO's on the Red Sox? you know one of the red SOx minor leaguers on their forty man roster and..

"Just put a stamp on this and get get along. Little Doggy I mean let let's have this at least in you know. Fans are understandably pissed off. Teams again the Red Sox, not the worst offenders here, but everybody's taking their sweet time servicing the customers to get refunds to games that aren't being played. You look at the as not paying their minor leaguers. The nationals quietly deciding to cut minor leaguers salaries from four hundred bucks a week to three hundred bucks a week. Those are not good optics gotTA. Love the nationals player stepping. Stepping up and basically saying f you to management. If you know if you're gonNA take one hundred dollars away from minor leaguers will pull our resources and come up with that hundred bucks a week for these two hundred or so players I mean come on your Mark Lerner. You're worth five billion dollars is kind of the least you can do so again we're. We're looking for good things. We're looking for shiny stuff and the rubble right now and as America just spins off its axis right now in the whole world seems to as well. I WANNA. Go back in time. This is a one thing I thought you guys would appreciate because. The nostalgia play. Obviously, that's something that's kind of saving our butts right now, we we think of things that happened. Way Back when. Or even. Hack! Three or four months ago before Corona, virus and Because I'm recording this on June first. That's a day for me. It's funny. June first with the mets. That's the day Johan Santana had the mets only ever. No hitter and I missed it. I was back in South Lake Texas. My daughter was graduating from high school that evening, so it was a a no brainer. That's where I needed to be only have one chance to see your daughter. Walk across the stage so I was there, but I just so happened to Miss Johan Santana no hitter. That's baseball. Susan as our good friend John Sterling would say in New York, but for me, you know I I go back, and this is a fun anniversary for me. It is a twenty four year anniversary of something else entirely. It's when I got to be a major league baseball announcer. The Fox network was hiring young guys to roll out their new game of the week coverage and me and Ken. Singleton were a team for the first couple years they started mixing me up I worked with psycho lions for a while, and which sobbed in with MacArthur and boy. I'd some great partners at George Brett. Frank Robinson it was just amazing and. The very first assignment I got June First Nine Hundred Ninety six twenty four year anniversary today. My assignment was red sox at Seattle. And the Red Sox. Let's go back and ninety five. They were coming off. I thought a very interesting season that was ear. Tim Wakefield started fourteen in one in Wakefield was going to be on the mound for this game I'm going to get you through that lineup in a minute, but. That was the best of five against Cleveland, where in game, one nehring hit the go ahead of home on the eleventh, but then Albert. Bell hit the the big shot off Rick Aguilera and the bottom of the inning, the Tony Pain you walk up again seen Smith, so the socks ended up getting swept in the ninety five playoffs with can Saco taking an over thirteen I think.

"Red Sox beat. This is Josh Lewin your host from the other coast sitting out a year and Salona Beach California where things are starting to quiet down. What a crazy weekend! Awful weekend! Maybe, this'll be archive, and you're listening to this and twenty twenty three for all I. Know A boy. Wouldn't it be nice, but it was twenty twenty three right now, but the weekend just for archival purposes that just happened in America was eye-opening, scary chaotic. Horrible. Race riots and Protests gone wrong and there's some good things the I'm sure can come out of it I. Sure Hope So. It's scary. TIMES CORONA viruses. According is the number two thing that everybody's talking about. Twenty Twenty Sucks Just to biblical proportions. I'M NOT GONNA. Wear you out with that. You're here to get away from it and I'm here to provide so. We're GONNA. Try to get to in this episode. A little bit of prediction in terms of when we might see some baseball when we might see the red sox out there at fenway wasn't a great week or weekend for the socks either. We're GONNA talk to Chris Smith momentarily from mass live. He's going to break down the red sox kind of caving towards what a lot of teams are doing right now. Which is saying look? We're you know we're losing money, so you're gonNA, lose money. We're going to start having some salaries here releasing minor leaguers and As always I hope he has. Total red. SOX Honk I give the red sox of the doubt all the time, because I think that that they the giants the phillies. Maybe there's very few teams. It seemed to do almost everything right. All the time and the Red Sox are usually right at the head of that list. I just don't think they. They had a very good Friday. With News Dump that showed that they're gonNA start cutting salaries and. The structure of how they did it. We'll get into that with Chris and a little bit, but I want to try to keep it somewhat. I don't WanNa say positive because again. Nothing super positive right now, but just. As of June first the latest that you need to know the players proposal finally came back. They want one hundred fourteen game season would start at the end of June would go to the end of October. That's probably not going to happen for a variety of reasons, but at least it seems like there's some some talk now some back and forth and. Expanded Playoffs for a couple years I dig that that's fine. They're talking about a salary advance of one hundred million split among the players during Spring Training two point Oh. Still talking about enhancing the season with microphones on the players and other broadcast enhancements. All of that would be fantastic and. Holding some other events like off season all, Star Games. Plural home run derbies. I mean there's so many cool ways you can be generating goodwill and additional money, so they need to find a way right I mean. The nuclear option is not an option that they gotta understand. How if you don't play, it might take years if not decades for some fans to forget all of this squabbling, the millionaires versus billionaires. And other sports are starting to come back or at least show that they know what they're doing in terms of coming back, so it's time to..

"And it was. We're about to play. The Boston red, sox and The question was had. Lee May really done that poorly against Louis Teapot, and it was something like the staff. Lee was like three, thirty, one with no home runs and I'll say seventeen strikeouts exaggeratedly or performance. No home runs. And and so I run back and. Do it by hand. We had all the score. Sheets of all the Games go back and recalculate recalculate. I go and I see earl in the dugout meetings around the said. Yes, that is okay. And so that move blay may down I. think to six in the binding order now. Twenty years later. Twenty years more than twenty years later. Who that I would ever get to work for the Boston Red Sox. New that I would ever get to meet lt on and on a bus at team bus. I told Louis theon that story. and Ti says to me is wonderful accent. You know why he didn't believe those stats. I said why. He said where at Fenway Park one day. Thirty Lee may is a home run over the wall over the screen. What. He goes next inning. He reigned, did rain rain rain looking no stats. He never hits the home run. Remember that. Could call only can call bullshit on Charles. dynevor involves something like that right about everything else. You had no way. No, not an easy. The the stats, really. He went down the the scoresheet from game. That retroactively didn't exist right. You would see that. He hit that home run, but I thought it was amazing. The Tian remembered it and and that's what was causing earls, suspicion, but the. Or was great he was in. There are thousand earlier source role and one quick Baltimore in because of another passing of late, unfortunately great alkaline. In Baltimore is hometown of all things. He had a homerun. Just light rain out. Didn't council famously with a three ninety nine? Yeah okay, yeah. "Process to dive in to the culture of of Worcester in central mass and I feel bad little bit because Worcester. FANS ARE PASTA FAN. They've been coming to pawtucket for these fifty years again. Minor League baseball defines it as one market. That's why you have not had two minor league. Teams in wooster. One in pawtucket I simultaneously in organized baseball so I feel bad that only lately. Did we really dive into the culture of Western, but it's one. that. You learn in immediately. Is that the heart? The symbol of a heart is ubiquitous and you recognize. Is that maybe there at least three reasons that it's so valid one? Back in eighteen, forty eight, when worcester went from being a town today in a city they. Declared themselves the heart of the Commonwealth. So. They were a transportation hub They are essentially located in Massachusetts. But also right around that same time in wooster the Commercial Valentine. was invented but really the third reason is the most Tackle reason you can feel. You can touch and feel the compassion of the city. It is a city with a heart they've had tragedy with firefighters other tragedies to but losing the Worcester six. In nineteen ninety nine ripped. Ripped this city, and if you're from Worcester, everybody knows and everybody was affected Firefighters in law since including recently and so, but how the city reacts to heartbreak is heartwarming. It's a remarkably passionate and compassionate city, so the hard is ubiquitous symbol, and that's why we want back in the logo. Also. Go back to November. Twenty second nineteen, sixty three president. Kennedy is fascinated. The world mourns as the nation mourns, and in this spirit of melancholy. There was an insurance company in Worcester that new spirits were low and I think whatever they were GonNa do from a business standpoint, a merger or something like that. Prompted the head of the insurance. Company has their out agency. Can you do something to lift spirits? And they went to an artist at the AD agency gentleman named Harvey Ball Be Alo. and. He sat down at his drawing table. and. He drew a circular yellow ball circular. a circle was.

"We have to be careful not to let our dreams become stated plans because we're short of that, we have imagined that twenty twenty would be a season long a series of sentimental moments where you could celebrate the memories of McCoy Stadium. This is the fiftieth anniversary this year of Pasta that's baseball. started in double a with the red sox. In Nineteen, seventy later became triple eight of Nineteen, seventy, the twenty twenty. was you know a fifty year period and tied in a bow and you know a lot of baseball? Fans know the longest game professional baseball history. was thirty three. Any Games that you are familiar with because of your days with Rochester Red Wings. But in nineteen eighty one. And that thirty three inning games in pawtucket against the Orioles Triple Club at that time the Rochester Red Wings. I mean history thirty three innings, and there's a whole story in a gorgeous books about read then marries booking semen craftsman's, but there's a great, but you want to celebrate that you wanNA have Dave Khoza. Who got the game winning him? Come back so we? Assumed that, we could do a season long. Tribute to McCoy and deposits baseball while building polar park in West Both are along the blackstone. River both are in the Blackstone Valley they are one market as defined by Minor League Baseball, so you're not going too far. Even though it's still an emotional jolt to Rhode Island Lois. who see that you're crossing the border? In Massachusetts but it's really one market so now with with Kovin. You have a `daladier season all right well. We'll still be able to treat twenty twenty with sentiment. They never delayed construction and you're starting to wonder well. Is Everything going to shift any year. You might still have it. and you just don't know well now with today's news that some construction projects in Worcester Cam resume. You have the resuscitation this construction project, but you don't know yet what the rate of construction will be because you have to take new measures to make sure the construction workers are an entirely a healthy and safe, so you still don't know what the impact. Of the construction hiatus and rate of construction will be, and so you don't know yet when we're talking about time wise for the sunset on Pawsox baseball and the sunrise blue SOx baseball that we still have to see. On Baseball and by the way I can only imagine. The merchandise is already flying off the shelves internationally. Really, banding of there's Logo. All of the time of the heart I mean it's just fantastic so I know you have to ten percent. We have everything in the time to read I, mean it's almost makes it sound like we're insensitive. "You look up tainted means that there's something sticking to it. Something in there is something there so. Let's be be grownups about it recognized that there was an issue there, and that's where we are. I think that's very well sad and you know if you go inside the numbers. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe not, but for what it's worth. The team Oh. PS with runners in scoring position in eighteen was eight seventy two when they had nobody on, it was about seven fifty, so whatever they were doing. It worked but but all in all I. is it fair to say? The socks skated a little bit I mean? If. They really didn't dive dear nearly as deep as the Aska was did it makes sense. Punishment was far less other than a video replay guy taking the fall Cora Front office. Everyone else comes off pretty clean here. Yeah and one of the things I've learned in which reading over the years is that? You can rip the team. If I. Read a call saying. Oh, the red sox in this the Red Sox, that and boo the Red Sox, and how dare they? I can walk into the clubhouse the next day and no one's going to bat an eyelash. When you, would you aim your your poison pen if you will? At individual players, coaches and In front office types, and so forth when out now it's the individual that's being called to the carpet, and that's when you walk in there the next day and you've got that player will come running up to you, Hey! Tom How dare you so forth, So with that in mind with that philosophy mine, of course, they skated. Because it's if you Google Boston Red Sox while you're going to get that stop, but you google individual players. They're not part of it. And so they can sleep well at night. Knowing that their individual reputations have not been a questioned. And, so if you look at it that way, yes, of course, they skate. You know I look back I. Guess was twelve years ago when the US housing market crashed, and how not a single top executives at any of the major banks went to jail, one loan banker somewhere that I think got thirty months because you can seal the tiny fraction of his company's losses, but that's kind of the comparison. Some people are making your the JT. Watkins is this one lone banker, and if you're to believe Major League, baseball, he acted alone in decoding and relaying signals and Dave Dombrowski didn't know John Henry didn't know the players didn't know, so. Let me have you put your intrepid journalist hat on again. Is that possible I mean it? Could that really be true? Could. It be true that it was Watkins alone doing all this question. Yeah, we'll know it's silly. Because he. He doesn't have that kind of power. he? He didn't move the video replay room to right behind the DUGOUT. And he didn't on his own and I don't know him well. I had a pleasant five minute conversation with him in Fort Myers back in February, walking down a hallway together and We have a couple mutual friends so when I say I know him, I I have a vague familiarity with him and nicest thing I can say he's a very pleasant young man. that doesn't mean I've done a you know exhausted investigation into the way he does his job. But. I find it hard to believe that this person. Who hopes to grow and prosper and have a career in baseball would all by himself. Gather this information and put it under. The is in front of the eyes of Big League ballplayers That just doesn't make sense to me I think that's that's being very naive..

"Journal is going to join us in just a little bit. We're going to talk our way through the very latest around baseball. A little bit about the. Red Sox obviously best we can. Certainly talk about. If there's going to be baseball if there's the possibility of the red sox now being in this weird division with a bunch of great teams, if that happens, that could certainly put a little dark spot on the outside chances that they were in the beginning to make a playoff run in twenty twenty, but isn't going to be a twenty twenty We're GONNA. Get to that. That's going to be pretty much most of our conversation here today I, sure hope there's a two thousand twenty baseball season. I know you guys do, too because they for no other reason, the scarier and more uncertain things seem in our day to day. Lives think the more important it gets to have an anchor, and for so many people. Baseball is at anchor in their day to day lives sports and music are really the to Universals, and there are people out there. That aren't necessarily sports, fans or wondering. What's the big deal that there's no baseball? Baseball for a while and I always say imagine in an entire month, maybe several more with a moratorium on music. If you're stressed, you can't listen to your favorite song. There's nothing on in the background. Is he working your kitchen that concert? You were really looking forward to for months will now never happen and that's kind of how lonely it's been for baseball fans, and that's why it's so important to get back to them just as soon as it's safe, and that is the key word to me. I hope it is two guys to safe. Can the game be played without fans as question. We're hearing a lot right now, and it may have to be for a while to keep everyone safe. Lots of spring training. Games are played in front of very few fans, and there are be games on backfield's where there are no fans, so this is not unprecedented in any way. And in a strange way I keep thinking. Maybe baseball can model for every sport and every social event in the country. How to execute this slow roll back to normal. Keep it safe. Make some adjustments for now as need be. Keep looking forward to when things get back to how we've. Known them is the Arizona plan real or the Arizona Florida plan, real I get that one a lot too and I would say yes, and no, because until testing is scaled and accessible to everyone say very bad look to test only ballplayers in a bubble I think everyone agrees going forward. Even talking about all this, assuming the testing across the nation will be a reality before too long. I mean I don't mean to turn this into politics, but I I can't believe that's not the number one thing that's. been tried over the last several weeks..
