Ranch Fire Burns Thousands Of Acres, Threatens Homes In Azusa Foothills, Los Angeles County

"The ranch fire up in Saint Gabriel can in north of Azusa, is it 2500 acres and growing. The work of containing this fire will be ongoing for days. The fire started at the base of the hills near homes on ranch road, then move with startling speed of the tops of the riches and kept right on moving, North Angeles National Forest Battalion chief Seneca Smith said. While there's plenty of fuel to burn is the fire goes into the hills it's penned in on both the east and Western flanks. The recent fire. The damn fire, which started a little over a week and 1/2 ago, is actually just to the northeast of this fire that we see right now and fires from a couple of years ago to the West. Camp Cruz. Belarus: UN rights chief condemns violence against protesters, calls for grievances to be heard

"Nations has condemned the use of violence by authorities in Belarus, following the death of a twenty, five year old man in police custody. There have been protests across the country in recent days amid claims, the Sunday's presidential election was rigged in favor of Alexander Lukashenko Lukashenko has ruled Belarus for more than a quarter of a century and is often described as Europe's lost dictator. Let's get the latest. Now a monocle twenty, four security correspondent Benos Zog Begnaud is also an expert on batteries and he joins me on the line from our newsroom in Zurich, a very warm welcome back to the briefing. Bene-. Tell us what are we seeing here? The scale of the demonstrations does seem to be unprecedented in recent times. Embarrass is this potentially a moment of change? High under good to talk to you the the use of the word unprecedented was quite widespread in twenty twenty. But I think when apply to these protests that we currently see in Belarus in a number of cities, it is indeed warranted. So what we have seen since these rigged elections on Sunday and by rigged, we're talking unprecedented rigging elections as well. One could even assume that up to fifty percent of ballots had to be changed to not show Smith Leonard, Dehaan Kia, the main opposition candidate, but Alexander Lukashenko, the incumbent president. Since. Then we've seen a bit of a cat and mouse game and a number, very decentralized protests across the country by a number of people not just young students, for example, the liberal elite of cities but even former supporters of Lukashenko's policies are now taking to the streets and police brutality is indeed widespread. So don't you there is a bit a sense of change there because Russo Society will never be able to go back to what it was as an appreciated kind of this strong welfare state that the Lukashenko provided for as well as disability in the country changes in the air and people have demands unfortunately. Political. System. Under an autocrat, Lukashenka has no way to take these grievances and addressed in any meaningful way. In similar situations in the past, the the only thing that can happen to let the demonstration demonstrators get what they want is for the military or the police force to change sides. As you say, we're saying ordinary police brutality, the the death of a man in custody. That doesn't seem to be any hint of that. Yet is that is that the the the weak point though for Lukashenka that he needs to make sure that that there there is no dissolution amongst those forces. Indeed I think the loyalty of security forces and that's most of the police, but also the army is key. But at the moment, it appears like they still know who they owe their loyalty and their privileges to polices. For example, they have stable positions are well paid, and there's no alternative force that has come up. Let's say a general or any high ranking officers that kind of countered this this narrative I'm so it's very even though on social media as optimistic rumors about the odds officer here and there pledging loyalty to Hanukkah, the opposition candidate these instances are still very rare but one does wonder for how long even the security forces can. Maintain this level of repression because it's a battle day and night for these thousands and thousands of security forces, and the army is a conscription army. So it only has a few thousand paid offices and the rest are well members of the public of the people as well. WHO's loyalty will probably be less so with with the president at all costs but currently, we don't really see these cracks within the elite at some point maybe the way out also to address some of the grievances of the protesters and maybe allow for that to change policies under Lukashenka or under somebody else but it doesn't look like a coup at this stage yet at all. then. What we make of what Russia thinks this time because we know the EU is is saying that this is being a a terrible corrupt moment that the election was not fair. You see you see the opposition leader heading to Lithuanian, being given support there but for Russia's a complicated story because you know they would like better to be back in new within Russia back more closely aligned with Moscow. They have here a maverick leader who's over the years tried to play Moscow off against the European Union. What would Russia like out of this? Do you think they would potentially even like him gone if there was another strong leader who supported Russia. Indeed Russia, the Kremlin specifically isn't a tricky situation here, and even though they congratulated Lukashenko on his electoral victory they've been remarkably quiet overall in a why the not too unhappy with the situation because Belarus that is very busy with itself and is weak politically in that sense and lacks other friends like European, union, which is very critical and may enact sanctions is somewhat in their favor because this will only leave one thing which is continued dependence on Russia. Let's not forget Russia is better. Russa's closest ally genuinely the to share a lot of cultural ties, as well as political ties and economic ties above all batteries for longtime has been dependent on cheap Russian energy as subsidies. But I don't think Putin or the Kremlin on necessarily. Keen on Lukashenko himself staying power as long as the someone that they can rely on and as long as some kind of stability is probably maintained I think. To the West kind of in a wait and see approach how these protests continue does any translation of this descent on at the political level and then it will decide. But at the moment as Belarus is in turmoil, it works somewhat well for the Kremlin but there have to be wary about how this is

Speak to Actions and Results Rather Than to Character and Intelligence

"Host is Guy Harris who has more than twenty years of combined. Professional Military Experience in consulting coaching and training in areas like team in interaction dynamics, communication strategies, and tactics as well as emotional intelligence take it away guy part of this guy harassed welcome to the talk leader. PODCAST. This week's episode is titled Speak To actions and results rather than to character and intelligence. This fits really in the category of coaching conversations or correction conversations or feedback conversations. Terms of how you speak to the people on your team and. Based on some things we've already talked about series I did with Carl Smith and a number of other episodes in this podcast. Probably you'll get the idea of what I'm about to make an explicit point of today. And still I feel it's necessary to make an explicit point. So let's talk about speaking to actions and results rather than to character intelligence. The idea is to avoid what's known as an ad Hominem attack now in the world of debate. And philosophical discussion there is an a line of reasoning called an ad hominem attack with. An attack against a character. Or intelligence of the person in an effort to turn their argument. And I've heard it said in the debate world that Ad Hominem attacks are the last refuge of someone with nothing to say I've also heard it said that Ad Hominem attacks are the last refuge of the ignorant. entered. It said that Ad Hominem attacks are the last gasp of a adine argument. And the point is this when we resort to attacking the person, their intelligence, their character capability. It tends to indicate the. We don't really have that much substantive to say or that we haven't given much thought to our argument. So let's talk about how this applies in the realm of coaching performance management offering feedback and why this matters atoll story. About an officer I reported to the Navy he was the ship's engineer and he basically insulted the junior officers that reported him on virtually every opportunity had anytime anything what wrong it's because we were stupid anytime anything. Well, it's because he was smarter than US and was able to catch us before we made a stupid mistake. He was rarely able to give credit for what went well, and he was almost always willing to blame others when things went wrong he. Had negative really crude nicknames for every person that reported to him. He often did not call us by name but called us by rude and obnoxious nicknames. All of these if it were a debate would fall in the category of Ad Hominem attacks they were on our intelligence or attacks on our character they were tax on our capability and while I'm confident that he thought it was all in good fun because he would tend to laugh when he did these things. And thought it was probably a joke. Really a pretty negative impact on the team reported to him. And one day we had a discussion in the engine room and something had gone wrong. He actually picked up a book and literally threw a book at me. I was quite a frustrating situation. And the impact it had on me and the other junior officers are reported to him was that we tended to avoid him tended to avoid trying to have conversations with them of any substance, and we were afraid frankly to let him know when things went wrong. So it basically cut him out of the loop of having any productive dialogue with us and I've heard it said I've actually experienced this that you can often learn more from negative experiences in from positive experiences. So while I wish that I had only had positive experiences in my life, the truth is it's not true. I have worked for leaders who terribly bad at communication who resorted to Ad Hominem attacks who attacked the people that were around him and yelled at people in criticize people rather than encouraging and supporting people. I'm not suggesting by the way that we don't confront. Quote bad behavior or bad results or inattention to detail. I'm not suggesting we don't confront negative things. What I'm saying is we don't have to attack the person because something went wrong if we talk about the results and the actions rather than the person who got the results or took the actions if we talk about how the thing was done and how we can do better than we're going to get better results. When we interact with people the more we can shift our conversation away from attacking the person. And more towards discussing the problem or the outcome, the better our communication will be. Now. With having a conversation with my daughter one time and I was trying to come up with a way to say this since she said, you know dad, it's better to prosecute the problem than it is to persecute the person. and. So that's the idea of today's episode. The better we can get at focusing our attention on the actions that were taken were the results that were achieved rather than the person who achieve the results or took the actions. The more effective our communication approaches will be the more likely. We are to draw people towards us to solve the problem collaboratively together rather than run from US and

David Bowie and the other hand and it was impossible to do both things. Boy Do you think would happen. There'd be less school-going. Joe I buy another talk. I wanted to be a rock and roller I play guitar, and I just wanted to make wild noise. Or. Unveil. muschamp coffee you would see warhol walking around with his polaroid and handing out copies into you magazine. So this is what I thought. Every teenager did it didn't occur to me that. What an unusual environment this what? We're here sort of to talk a little bit about the band place music and give people a chance to find out what the student teachers are really because I think a lot of people in New York even though I know most of the people in the band from the New York area don't know that much about student teachers. Any. Seems to be a mystery to herself and everyone. While sometimes, that's effective. I don't know. Imagine this group of teenagers in the late seventies in new. York. City. Most of them are still in high school, a couple of recently graduated. They're obsessed with bands like television and Patti Smith the Ramones Roxy Music. Most of them come from fractured family lives and find community in the club scene. But get this in the span of six months they go from not knowing how to play instruments to headlining their favorite clubs. Then opening IGGY pop getting interviewed I'm GonNa have their favorite radio stations eighty nine point one W Nyu. How do they make that happen? This Ragtag Group of best friends lived and breathed the scene. They spent all their time together by records running fan clubs. Reading. Rock magazines. They'd go to shows together and off often get mistaken for being in a band so. One day in bills living room they decide. Why not? Let's form one. Just. kind of said that everybody everybody's all play drums and I'll play guitar. Okay. You play Bass and I said, okay. Then lawyer said well, I don't know if my voice will be good enough because she was gonNA sing. So maybe you should be from female rhythm section and then we We all hated. Wouldn't bands felt like sports teams. And with David I both being gay and Philip, and then later Joe being straight boys and then, Lauren? Laurean. Laura being the female rhythm section we really love what we did visually. I think it's more important than we have a concept an idea. I A music. Actual technical ability because we knew our instruments well enough to be able to contain the idea to an extent. But you guys can make it. I mean you think you're gonNA make it after the All of us into. Your knew we weren't musicians and none of us cared but we cared about is that we were gonNA have a blast. We were going to be cool. We were GONNA be the coolest kids and we weren't going to imitate anyway.

"Edrich. How did we get here? Well you know I have to tell him like eleven following American Politics American economics for about five decades and I really watched both the political system and the economic system victory over that time in economics, the things really began to change in the eighties early eighties. From World War Two until the end of the seventies. When the economy grew the middle class standard of living rose with it. You can see him almost move in tandem all levels of society moved up together but then we started to get what they call shareholder capitalism maximum return to shareholders. Wages tended to get frozen. They got stagnant. The middle class of living deteriorated wealth got concentrated. The top one percents the top point went percents top point zero, zero, one percent, and then you had a bunch that happened in the economy partly because of shareholder capitalism, we can talk about that. But also because of the way the tax system was changed huge tax cuts. Under Ronald Reagan under George Bush on Donald Trump for the wealthy added about five trillion dollars five trillion dollars to the wealth of the people at the top end added to the insecurity of the middle class people not knowing whether or not. They could afford their retirement, send their kids to college of for their homes, make it from month to month, and at the same time that was happening a lot of that money was spilling into the political system. So you had the increase. Influence of mega donors, corporate money, and billionaire money particularly since the Citizens United Decision in January twenty ten by the Supreme Court which has given just a free pass to unlimited amounts of money and you've seen the amount of money skyrocket wing go into that. and. That's really affected the political system and the other thing is the party differences have hardened.

"And a lot of people just want to level up. You know, we just want to get to the next level wherever we are in like. JJ Smith, the wonderful JJ Smith out with her new book. Think yourself thin by JJ Smith New York Times bestseller in the house, which was truly Stephen right here on ESPN radio and ESPN news. Now, I know you do a lot of these things for women and bought the way how many pounds have you contributed to helping people lose throughout this country? Could you give you that number. JJ they're gonna have years. I mean, million pounds, three million pounds in the last year and a half years. Yeah. And I know somebody's like when I just need twenty thirty, but we got you covered. I mean, we and you know, even you did a slap belly challenge with us. Some of these programs target just getting rid of belly fat. Some of targets losing weight. Overall, some of it is getting more energy and you know, just, you know, I'll be forty nine and for me, I'm looking feel great. I don't mind aging as long as I look and feel great. So we have programs for everybody depending on what your goal is. Now you brought up women and I know you've done a lot of a lot four women. I gotta call you on the carpet about this. Have you ever thought about talking to offensive lineman in the national football? They do Steve. Those putt billions that they would around. I mean, have you have you have you entertain the possibility that could be big business for you as well? Some of these offense of lineman in the National Football League? Can I ask you a question. Have you heard of the hogs the Redskins hog. Oh, yeah, I have. What's your point. The hogs right overweight, they're all overweight. That's right. No see the role of the offense lineman. Those gotta beat a big guy. You know, they need some girth right in order to protect the quarterback. And so you know you'd be taken away from their edge if you try to slim them down. Zone other words. They just let me let me make sure I get this correct, because we're got a WinCo back years, and I happen to know that you love your Redskins. So let me get this straight. You all for weight loss, and you want to help the nation, a nation, full of women and men to get the help. It oughta get themselves. Right. You Todd and the rest of the fellas the whole crew love all young, love all the, here's the deal. You want to help everybody else, but them damn hall on the risk is because you want them fat and rotund and block it for whatever for Alex Smith. And anybody else is that is that was my understanding. I did not use the word Rotan. They need some curve dry, partly fine if the risk is office of line and have a little extra weight because you see when we played your band man, air Iraj is we looks good. I mean, you even you even noted that yourself going, let let the hog let the rescue. So let me get destroyed. That's what we doing now bragging about Redskins. What about thirteen games to go? That's what we would take into Chicago. We do that. You talked about constantly and I just need you to give it up with me on the phone. I need to hear at one time for myself about what? What do you need me to say? What do you need? How great we played and how much better we love Aaron Rodgers. No, I. It was one day without best game. We look good that game will feel with a little messy. He got a little leg knee problems, but we look good and I need to do it knowledge. You don't do that enough in the solicit, the Redskins did well, it was a guest one leg quarterback in bad weather. But if you need to props just, you know, game three, it's regular season. I'll give it to JJ Smith Washington Redskins. I got it. I got it. I got. We're talking a wonderful to lovely JJ Smith off the off of the new book that's out..
