"So we're going to start this episode off on the morning of that final culminating day of the conference. It's a sunny, Saturday morning. The kids have just gotten the final pep talk and some logistical instructions and the voices that you're about to hear now belong to Steve so stack and Erin Mona's of inspire citizens. They are the organizers of the conference. So here we are at Seoul foreign school for the global youth media conference where. Both iron and Wendell from out of the blocks have spent the week integrating into classrooms from fifth grade all the way into middle school and high school sharing stories of how to listen how to interview how to do soundscape, how to just capture the spirit and the mosaic of a of a neighborhood. And now we've brought ten schools from overseas to join in with that experience. And we're about to go into the goo thanks to Seoul foreign school and out of the blocks in Korea. The neighborhood is called goo, g you g you. That's it. And so rather than going get creating a story that comes out of the blocks. We decided to create stories by going into the neighborhood into the goo and by adding GU we add our Korean context locale to the name. So this is Saturday morning, these kids are literally about to get geared up and go out onto the streets of Seoul into these different neighborhoods, these different Gu's talk about sort of what you see, in there is the sort of mix. Of emotions, they have right now, this is like, like they seem excited, but a little freaked out. Well, I know it sounds cliche and, you know, you say a lot of tears, that idea that our parents told us not to talk to strangers and we are now going to go walk around with thousands of dollars worth of gear, and talk to strangers and a lot of, they don't know if the person's even going to speak English, they don't know if they're going to have to trans language. They don't know if they're going to have to if they're going to get rejected, you know, and they will ninety percent of the time. So. Right. And others this mix of excitement in Drennan, but also, like what the heck am I getting myself into so it's amazing to see that confused, the next sighted, look on face of a teenager? We're setting up the main camera angle, and we're getting up Taipa locking up played, and we're in a plugging the power supply. Who's gonna be? So who's gonna be the who's going to be the audio part? So basically, you your main goal is to set the audio level to negative twelve. Test test test negative twelve here. You see the audio level Trump point here. So right now, we're still kind of setting up and looking for people who would kind of be interested in interviewing and refound, a quieter area so that we can get all the boom, mikes and cameras set up without people having a go around us on the sidewalk. You got a good spot. Now, you just got to find some people to interview. Oh, they've got someone high. So thank you for agreeing to do this. And what is your name? And where are you from? Thank you. Nice meeting, you, and we have a couple of Christians that we want to ask you. So the first question is, what are you currently worried about? This is the university area. And so it's fully universities. It's got a younger demographic, lots of restaurants shops, and clubs. Nightlife. This is Gibault he's one of the teachers at Seoul, foreign school. Who's out here on site today, helping to keep an eye on the student teams from other countries while they navigate their way through the neighborhoods of soul. They got their gear crews and through hong-dae trying to scour for some interviews nervous, probably. But, like we just saw there once they like break the ice with the first interview, they realize this isn't so hard, right? And then it starts to kind of fall into place, and more and more people say, yes. And they kind of get a positive momentum. This might sound a bit personnel. But you, it's okay if you don't want to answer but what's your most treasured memory?.

"But the first time you're that's quite surprising. Okay. Okay. And I was just looking up so fifty one million people in South Korea. And I believe of that twenty six or twenty seven million of them are in the Korea the Seoul metro area. They say that this size of Correa is similar to the size of Indiana. Okay. It's about twenty percent. The size of California. With one and a half times more people. Yeah, it's a huge population density, especially when you're in the big city, and if you had to summarize soul in three words, which three words with us modern busy. Yep. Delicious. I hadn't chosen delicious. I would have been Sedley to support the conversation. When I go on vacation, it's about food, and I keep going back to science at Spencer, our guest, again, his Spencer gents, the Packer tells just a little more about hacker paradise because we've mentioned a couple of times during the show, but it's an interesting program. Yeah, hacker paradise is a community on the road for remote workers. So basically, if you think about people who have the flexibility to work from home or work from another office or a couple days or maybe for months at a time. We basically round those people up people who have the freedom to work from anywhere. And we take them to different places. So instead of just doing three days in Seoul or three days in France on vacation before you have to go home, we go and actually live there as a bull who would be there for two months or something like that live there and work there, obviously there and work there. Right. So we have accommodations we have in office. We have a local community, and we have our own community. And so instead of just going to these places once in getting a small taste of it. And then leaving we're actually embedded in the local city quite a bit more. So you live there you work there, you make friends the lady who works at the corner coffee. Shop knows your order. There is a lot more of a familiarity of traveling in that way. So for people who have remote jobs don't wanna leave their job just wanna travel while still working Lucas up hit me up. We love taking people with us in introducing them to this different type of lifestyle, and we'll put a link to that in the show notes, obviously because that could be. Interesting match for somebody who is in our listening audience Spencer. Thanks so much for coming on the show and telling us about your love for South Korean, particularly for Seoul. Thank you very much. Happy to be here. "And it was a huge board. We snapped it in half. So those holidays are generally pretty boring where on the flipside like Christmas day, which front with your from the US is generally what you'd stay home with your family for Christmas day is like a very popular go out hang out with your friends holiday in Korea. Anything else, we should know about soul side trips? Most the side trips that I'd tell people to go on if you're just gonna do simple day trip would be maybe down. Awesome fortress, which you talked about more going up to the demilitarized zone DMZ that we talked about if you wanna go somewhere a little bit further away Pusan, which is the second. Biggest city in the country is maybe three hours away by train in his on the coast, which is really beautiful kind of the far side of the country. This point it is the far side of the country, but it is this mall country quickly willing. That's for those were history fans Poussin is the only part of South Korea that was not conquered in the Korean war, the beginning of Creon war, the Pusan perimeter. You are correct. So yes, very historically significant for those of us who do like the history. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of stuff in Seoul, which is beautiful in lovely. But it's all been rebuilt because it was destroyed during the war where in Poussin, you can find a lot of stuff that has been there for two thousand years. Okay. Well, you mentioned shrines or diamond dozen to you. There west stands out for people who do like shrines. There are some really beautiful ones down outside of Poussin area. If you really wanna go on a date trip. I think the city is called ongoing and they're out there in between Poussin and hey goo, and they're some of the most historic shrines in the country because of they've been there forever. They're hidden these beautiful mountains, and they just have a lot of religious and historical significance. Okay. When we do have a separate episode on southern South Korea. So I will send you off to that episode. For more information about that area. Anything else we need to know before we wrap up questions when you go to Seoul Korea in general, Google maps doesn't work very well. Okay. Uber doesn't work very well. They have their own set of applications for all those it's run by a company called kakaako. So download Kaka all maps download Kaka. A taxi service. Download the Kaka oh texting out because that is basically how everyone in Korea functions and gets around. So if you are trying to use Google maps, and you're trying to have it show, you how to walk somewhere it doesn't function. So you have to download these other apps to have that that functionality. Okay, good. To know. You're standing in the prettiest spot in Seoul where you standing in. What are you looking at? I would be standing on imam mountain wanna the viewpoints top and looking down at the old city where you can see the new high rises that are there the old palaces and the tower as well in the distance, and that's the same place. You took us that's behind the Blue House. Yes. Okay. That I got to bring my passport. One thing that makes you laugh and say only in Seoul, South Korea. They have very little respect for personal space because it's a small country with lots of people in a small city with lots of people, right? It's just packed full of people people will just bump into almost push you over at times, and they don't even stop in say anything. So the first time you're there that will take you by surprise that people bump you in just keep running past and then by three days in you're doing the same thing everyone else..

"Back on the road. There and read it's go real good pass board. Amateur traveler episode six hundred and thirty three today amateur traveler talks about temples shrines and a palace barbecue k pop and the DMZ as we go to Seoul, South Korea. Welcome to the metre traveler, I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Let's talk about soul. I'd like to welcome to the show is Spencer Jentzsch the CEO of hacker paradise. Who's come to talk to us about Seoul, South Korea? Spencer. Welcome to the show. Thank you. Happy to be here. And we'll talk a little more at the end about what Hecker paradises because I think it's interesting, but what's your connection with Seoul? I have a lot of connection with Seoul. Actually when I was younger. I actually went there on a Mormon mission and lived there for two years. I was my purse 'introduction than after that. I went back to university and decided that I wanted to study Korean language. So I actually got a masters there. I then ended up going back to Seoul and working for Samsun headquarters. And now like you mentioned I run Aker paradise which takes people to on trips all over the world and we've gone to sole twice now with me leading groups for about six weeks at a time. Excellent in why should? Someone go to Seoul. I think Seoul is one of the best cities in the world to be honest. And one of the reasons I think it is is because it's not on people's radar. Just as an example, we took a group of people over the summer to Japan for six weeks. And then we took them to Seoul right afterwards for six weeks. And to be honest. Everybody was so excited for Japan, and people didn't really care about soul before we went and afterwards because of that build up, I think that they had for Japan they had so many expectations. And none of that for Seoul, their experiences afterwards were totally reversed. So most people had said that they had always waited their whole life to go to Japan. But then after they went they're disappointed and way went to Seoul, it became their new favorite city to visit to in their planning Bakke shins to go back to it will since I have a trip planned in a month to Japan. Very disappointing to me. Excited trip over to Seoul as part of it is time. But I absolutely need to get their. What should we do insole?.
