What we really think about the new 8th-generation iPad
"The eighth generation IPAD may not be the sexiest new tablet on the block with the starring price of three, hundred, twenty, nine dollars. It might be the one you're most likely to buy. So Is it worth? I'm Roger Chang and this is your daily charge with me is our IPAD expert Scott Stein welcome Scott. So Scott we had you on right after that September apple than to show your impressions of all the announcements and the eighth Jan. ipad was not the most exciting product mentioned. You know we spent a little time talking about it but. You spent a few weeks with it. Has, your. Opinion Changed, are you what are you feeling about it now I think it's fine. I think it is not surprising IPAD. This is an IPAD that reminds me of last year's ipads because it practically is last year's ipads the the IPAD air twenty nineteen and the IPAD mini in two thousand nineteen had the same chip the IPAD air in this at the same Ram. It's basically that for less. There are some trade offs here that are tiny, but the IPAD air was more expensive. Now, that's now that's an all on the apple store. The IPAD mini is, but it's a tiny bump up in price. So you know three, hundred, twenty, nine dollars. This gets in at a much more affordable proposition, the the IPAD air that's coming. which is who knows when it probably in a couple of weeks is more expensive at starts at six hundred dollars. So it looks nicer. It looks like a less expensive pro. But I think when you're talking about almost doubling the price that. That really gets into a different territory for people. Yeah. Definitely. Anthony Twenty nine starting at three, twenty nine. It's obviously the most affordable option for someone looking for an IPAD. Ultimately for you who should be looking at this IPAD is primary option I. think if you just think of an I had something to have lying around check my email to look at shows to have one for your kid. This is that one if you don't care about step up bells and whistles, you don't want like a fancier toy. Not to call ipads toys I think they're very useful but I think that there is a point at which if you try to push an IPAD to become your everyday computer, you're going to have what you call pain points. You know you're going to have these difficulties that increase as you try to throw it out more. And I go to my laptop all the time because I need to. So that's the thing about the pro. He's got a lot of upsides that could be interesting, but you really have to map out whether that makes sense for you and if you WANNA think of it as like a fun thing for you but IPAD is totally perfect doing all that other stuff that being said. You know you got to bump up from the thirty two gigs of storage I think. That is too low an amount. For for what you'd be paying for this if you want it to last. Year's, and then you're talking about four twenty, nine Ri-, which slightly changes the equation a bit. He does you talked about our kids using this and a lot of kids obviously doing remote learning right now I've got a friend of mine who know he told me when he offered his kid a Mac, a choice between a Mac and ipad actually chose the IPAD. But isn't that really geared for remote learning for Education I think the older you get it's it's very nonsuited for it. You know we have a seven year old and eleven year old seven year old uses an ipad that we have around that. We use for remote learning it suitable. I think it's great. For eleven year old uses a chromebook and I think that's what you absolutely need for the types of. Work assignments you're doing your editing stuff, etc. Now ipads work with track pads, and so there's like on the entry level ipad they don't. It doesn't have this gets to accessories. Apple has beautiful but very expensive magic keyboard. That's like three hundred dollars. There are different accessories for this entry ipad. There's a Logitech Combo touch, which is still expensive one, hundred, fifty, dollar track pad keyboard I've been using with it. It's kind of like a surface with a kick stand. Type layout, but it's good for turning into a kind of a laptop but the point is that you can edit use a track pad. You'd be surprised at it can do more than you think, but some web apps some tools a google drive works well with it now but like some things don't. And you just don't know whether you get to that point where a problem especially with file storage file maintenance and chromebooks are weird too. But they're much more like web tool type based. Think the IPAD gets a little bit hotter with that. It, and then the I mean the big difference here as you said, it's identical lashes model. The big difference is the H. Wealth processor. How people differences that make you know I'm so used to seeing like. Standard. New I IPAD iphones. It doesn't feel particularly special, but I think it's necessary to get up to speed with. We're is going and we're going the processor was a couple of years old. It was feeling a little sluggish. They twelve is not like super zippy in comparison it's it's basically fine. It gets to the like very good fine point. So you know I could use an IPAD totally, but I think it's getting to the point where you might not be able to use it. So on the future and it gets to the point, I don't think you need to upgrade to this win -sarily. If you have an IPAD lying around, that's working fine you can probably keep using it. This is like you know between this last year's IPAD entry of like last year they did the. Works at Pencil works with the smart keyboard made the screen a bit bigger. It adds up to like one set of upgrades. But this thing still uses lightning. It still has a home button, the Basil's or kind of big. So for Split Screen APPs, it's not ideal. That's a the cameras a little less good than last year's IPAD air but that's not the problem. It's on the side ipad cameras on the side that kind of sucks because. You. Know if you're doing zooms and things like that your faces off center and I have not really sell for that and they should but I don't know how long it's GonNa take for an ipad to have a side. Mounted. Camera. To address this. So just F Y that's another thing now that we're doing everything over zooms in remote,

Economy plunges 31.4% in spring but big rebound expected
"Revised GDP figures from the Commerce Department show. The second quarter downturn was not quite so disastrous as initially reported, though the economy still shrank at a jaw dropping annual rate of 31.4%. A revision show consumer spending in the quarter was somewhat stronger than first reported, while exports and business investment were somewhat weaker. The economy has enjoyed a partial rebound in the third quarter, which ends today. But there are signs that recovery is losing steam as federal relief payments dry up negotiations over a possible new round of relief payments continue in Washington, but there's been no breakthrough yet. That's an you were talking about going to the MIC bar. member. Let you guys discussion because a lot of people don't know this how did you guys get the idea for comments by CELEBS? Okay. So it was April two thousand seventeen and it was right after instagram had changed the algorithm because if you remember back in the day, you're scrolling through instagram years looking at Kim's picture and there's one hundred thousand comments third they were sorted by most recent. So if Yeah. You know if a Kendall and Chris comments that you would never see those comments and instagram change their algorithm to highlight verified comments and we kind of noticed it together our whole friend group had and what really caught our eye the first time was we saw Courtney Scott interacting in the comment section. We're like wait a second. This is previous knowledge you know that we have we had. This is crazy. And the idea Cami of like I, need to make this into an account. So I had the name of. Because we did one of his posing Kennedy just not you would find this funny and he followed right in what he followed, which is kind of another. It was another solidifying factor that we were onto something but. I don't think it's that they're doing it to get picked up by us. That the landscape is changing and comments make headlines like Hamas news now, and so I think it's natural for celebrities to want to be in the news cycle clearly obviously, that's part of their whole. GIG THEY WANNA remain famous. So is it for us? Navy not? Is it for the general idea of comments making news probably

"Percent when you shop online, so you have to be able to bring the other ninety eight percent back through email and through that is when you're building. An Audience I. Guess is what you referring to. The next pillar is getting people to buy again right and by keeping in frequent contact with people buy from you, and sometimes they'll forget about you over time, so you have to remind them back to come back. They haven't purchased in a long time. And only once you have those three pillars in place. Should you even begin driving traffic? So in the beginning, you can use paid ads drive traffic, but ultimately you want to be able to get their contact information build an audience bill brand, and that's what creates a lasting this. Got You. And what are you seeing now in terms of you know like what we're doing right now. A podcast used to be only audio now. Everybody's doing audio and video. There's tons of streaming that's happening. People are going live on Instagram I mean, are you? Finding that the traditional old school, a website and email marketing system the ability to capture and connect with them. Is that still the cornerstone or is social media and a lot of the streaming starting to? Lapse that. Yes so I know for my efforts. I have not focused as much effort on social, because in my experience social. When you, you might get something that goes viral, but it's very temporary. It's like a couple days maybe a week at most whereas if you spend your time on more lasting resources like I focus on, Seo, my Youtube Channel Just building these platforms have a greater lasting reach rather than something. That's like running I I consider social media as more effort more it a lot of effort I, it's almost like running on a treadmill so to speak, you can have great of you can have great wins with social media, but it just requires a lot more effort. I don't know if that's been your experience Scott Yeah absolutely I mean I I was kind of throwing up a softball seen. If you'd hit it there because I see so many people who are really. They think that social media's the way to go and like you say it's a never ending thing. I mean that's a basically created a job for themselves rather than a business. and. "I've been told you're supposed to say Toronto Toronto now Toronto Rondo that's how it's spelled anyway. We flew out to elevate in Toronto to do pivot live this week. They say it's south by southwest of Canada a here Michelle Obama is there there. Are you ready. Let's do a Keira. Here's pivot live from elevate in Toronto L. Right Scott Get yourself together all right good. I'm good so first off. I off Canada Toronto so my father is eighty nine and returned eighty-five as any good son. Does I said Dad. You'RE GONNA be dead. Soon your bucket list you need to create a bucket list and every a year I will take something off your bucket list. He said okay. I'll think about this and I'll put it together. So what do you want to do and I think it's going to be well. I WANNA a home to Scotland or I want to spend time with you and your sons and every year for the last six years it's been the same thing I want to the opening night of the leaves at the Air Canada Centre for the last six years and he thinks about it every every year and then he tells me the same thing we go see usually the leafs lose and he grabbed me says we need to do something very important to have to the game and grab a CAC and we go to the dark reaches a King Street or something and he takes me by and by the way I've never seen my dad doesn't cry and the only time I've ever seen him cry when the bagpipers come out pre-game and the leafs and he just loses it anyway after the game he takes a cab to the dark reaches of Toronto Ronna we walk out tells the cab to wait and he looks up and he says you see that apartment. Yeah I see it and it's pretty nondescript brick apartment. He's like Third Floyd. You're over two three apartments. See the broken air conditioner. He's done this four times in a row and he held my hand and it goes. That's why you were conceived conceived. My guy says it angrily like it's my fault anyway so I'm very honest when I say literally for me. Everything began in Toronto so wait a second aside for your egregious kissing up to Canadians here ears right. I I was not born in Canada. Where are you Canadian? Make my parents mad here and then you become a landed citizen center. Whatever so you can escape trump when the time comes all Americans kind of honorary Canadian citizens I mean now we kind of like for the most part are we brothers and sisters is an arms at this point now? I'm making want us Scott Technology his aqua hires. I think we should have an invasion Asian higher. I think we should invade you and have your leadership takeover our country well. We'll get to your leadership in a minute. We'll get to your leadership and we got some issues with your leaders right now our we have worst issues. You know brown phase orange face. It's a problem right now anyway. This is our first international TRIPP Scott. That's it's right for our honeymoon. We were invited. It's not going to happen for you. We know yeah you know absolutely right now. There is nothing ever happened between you've been watching the dog. I didn't write your wife. Is another another issue anyway so so so anyway so here we are in a in Toronto. We big fans here. We were asked by lots of cities. He's and this is our first well. We went to New York and done live events there but be someone from Toronto wrote a ten part thread on how pitches scale it's business including its network effects and I think I think it's good. I think this selection of Toronto is the best decision we've made. So far. The let's get started. We would like to know what is going on with Justin Trudeau. We thought he was just dreamy and now apparently he's not so dreaming. So what what can anyone give us a an idea of what's happening embarrassment embarrassment so the election is in October is that right four weeks is going to win the tallest midget which really fascinating to us from the United States and look listen. We got something going on down south. That's pretty major going on this week an impeachment of the president but one of the things that was fascinating to me. He is my kids and I they like Justin Trudeau. He's got like the appeal you know. He's got the jury meeting going on and honeymoon period especially the United States like come here and be president didn't this and that after trump was elected and it was really fascinating to me. My son was seventeen my other son's fourteen we were like how bad add could it be like. Someone said he had been in Brown face and we we're like how bad could it be like. People possibly did this in college. It's really it is racists. No matter how you slice it and but how bad could it be and then we saw the picture and we thought this guy took a lot of effort to do this and that was most fascinating channing was like that is flawless makeup you horrible man and so that was what was interesting me and then three times all fantastically done which was horrible horrible in through the practicality. That's this is when it gets really scary. As you think about the prep the actual prep and you put yourself in the room or he's going Yup. This is a really good idea on a risk adjusted basis this makes a lot of sense yeah imagine and then and then you decide to do it a second and a third time but that's not disqualifying what is really disqualifying is using taxpayer funds to basically co op to foreign government into pursuing his political enemies that is treason like that's our guy. That's our guy we'll get to him. I'm in a minute but first of all so anyway. It's really we're watching it from afar. But of course we have our issues in our country so we should talk and we do often about about trump. We'll talk about that in a minute. What's going on there but I think that we have to do a big story breakdown? Let's begin to begin with. We work following our work on we work do they. Have we work in Toronto. Okay so this week the CEO Adam Newman is out and the question is is have we hit peak founder. Now we're talking about. We work even though both Scott and I think that we work is not a tech company Scott. How do you feel about this? I think Komo feel like you're somewhat responsible for the situation yeah so the autopsy on we work will be death by `Swan which is our perspective perspective or the SEC. It was actually a victory for the markets because if you look at what's happened to we work in the last thirty days. It's a company that Goldman said was going to go public was taking them public at a range of sixty fifty two ninety billion you know twice value Ford Motor and now it's worth zero it literally is worth probably less than zero. It's got forty two billion dollars in long-term leases and three doing dollars in revenues and loses a billion and a half dollars for every dollar it spans in top line with no margins it loses fifty cents and it's not a company that scaling scaling that has great gross margins like Google or even a Peleton which is supposed to go public today whereas positive gross margins once it gets to a certain top line it would be profitable. This is a company that similar to Uber as it grows grows its losses so it's literally worth zero. We've had probably the greatest destruction in shareholder value over a thirty day a period that we've seen in a long long time but here's the good news there is a silver lining here the mandatory disclosure by our government agency the Securities and Exchange Commission and put out something that kind of was a whistle call for this incredible confidence that is still alive and well in American business in Kadian business called math and people showed up and saw this thing and said okay including myself and said and Keira said something is very wrong here so all of a sudden the value went from fifty billion to twenty billion ten billion to now zero but whose incurred those losses. This is the good news. We're getting to our next victim here lowly out the employers lost a lot of money which is a good which isn't good news obviously a lot of hurt a lot of employees the the move a lot of fund out of the UAE lost a lot of money okay and who lost the most money the company that has washed the dirty money of the Saudi Public Investment Fund and then has moved dollars into the US and as leaving with dimes. I think this is the ghost of Kashogi who by the way was dismembered by a bone soft funded by the Saudi government and basically as as far as I'm concerned Saudi Arabia. You should definitely invested vision fund to Right so here's the deal today interestingly enough. NBS It was was saying it. It happened on my watch. He was he was washing himself responsibility of Kashogi and then kept saying it happened on he said to Martin Smith which is in a documentary that's coming out that it happened on my watch but didn't take responsibility which was Donna Shing Yard can we we definitely definitely pivoted away from. We work there okay well. We always liked to get into dismemberment of journalists but he does it is related this idea of where the money comes from and I think I think more to the point the one of the things that people talked about is the focus was a lot on Adam Newman his pot-smoking and he bought a Surf Company and he bought this and that and he it was a bad manager. Essentially the fact matter is people enabled this behavior and allowed it with tech companies and he's not a tech startups in a way this sort of founder allowing them to behave in juvenile managers and so I think the real problem here is are the is the board of directors actors of this company which has allowed it to go on and continued and what was amazing was that Softbank which I think was essentially like provided the sugar to to like a toddler essentially like a whole giant bowl of sugar to to this management and then said I can't can't believe this management is doing what it's doing and so it seems to me that the Board board reform is a big deal whether it's the board of facebook whether it's the board which has no power or the board of this company and I think we have to really look at these investors because what happened after the Wall Street Journal story about him lighting up on a plane like you honestly. I don't care if he does that. He is that what is that air. Private plane are never going to get on so it was fascinating fascinating about that is they immediately then went after him as if they didn't know they were shocked by horrified. I know so that's what's really to me really the most annoying part of this. It's not so much Adam Newman look he's an interesting entrepreneur great idea great brand but but you know is is is running a non-economic Company essentially but that the board gets off and Softbank is off and MUSC- shoes on gets off and they shouldn't they are completely completely responsible for it as far as again you have to discern between a public company that is supposed to be representing stakeholders including the community and all the retail investors who piled into this if we work at gotten gone public a union worker in Detroit a teacher Ottawa through the T- teachers would have been a shareholder most likely and we work in them would have incurred heard those losses so the tragedy here the tragedy of the comments was presented prevented and if you look at sopping vision one was one hundred billion dollar fund. It's basically impaired now. It's probably not gonNA work because two of their biggest investments Uber and we work which they invested twenty billion dollars one hundred billion into if one of them catches AH sneezes vision one catches a cold and right now vision one fund from Softbank has full blown pneumonia so the notion that this thing is going to work. It's just it's just not going to happen and then there's some it has forty percent of the forty percent of the fund has what's called the preferred return meaning it gets seven percent per year in cash and so they're taking the few good it investments they have the proceeds of few good investments they've made and they've put it back into the forty preferred which means the sixty the remaining sixty billion of the fun but what you could think of as common is severely impaired so soft bank's adventures playing in traffic are about to come to an end it will die with a whimper not not a bang but this does represent something more on mental and that just as there's a tension between capital and labour there's a tension between capital and founders and when I was starting companies in the nineties nineties the general the general viewpoint was founder was there to start a company but they were crazy and irresponsible and as soon as the company became real you brought in some old guy with gray hair like Jim Barksdale.

It's easy to blame the markets for your failures and credit credit your your character and your grip for your own success when things are going really well. It's important to realize it's not entirely your fault and in the same time when things get really bad it's also important and it's helped me realize it's not entirely your fault in this too shall pass. "Sara. Is it time yes scott. Let's go back to pivot live from new york city all right so we're going to do some live questions in the audience instead ahead of making predictions. We're going to get some from you and questions by the way just while awaiting. You should never have a big event without inviting canadians. Where am i canadians. They're in the back from halifax word. I met them at a bar last night. He'll my god by the way just if you wanna meet people who are emotionally secure secure super friendly and if they get sick will not be bankrupted and go to a good university. The american dream is alive. It's just a live in canada. Welcome welcome canadians canadian the question i by the way andros oregon is a spy for the canadian government this you know this. You know it's true. I love andy ross ross. He had a good column today. Chastising the power people. He enjoys talking to all the time if you were moderating moderating political debates. What questions would you ask. That haven't come up scott. Oh my god where to start okay so you want aw open borders. There's a billion people who want to come to the u._s. Does that mean we no longer have a process for legal immigration. Does that mean you're a soccer or if you actually go through the process of trying to get here legally. That'd be my first question. I know it's not cool not to endorse open borders. I think it's ridiculous that the democratic candidates would basically basically we shouldn't demonize undocumented workers but at the same time we shouldn't turn everyone coming here and saying they're here for asylum into saints. The murder rates in central america. Arca plummeted yet applications for asylum gone up. There's some new there's some nuance here. Oh we wanna give free college to everybody. You know what that is. That's a transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich because because eighty percent of kids in the wealthiest households go to college only a third of kids in poor households go to college you want to transfer more wealth to the rich then yeah make college free for everybody the fuck fucking thinking at some point demo- democratic candidates have to double down on capitalism. We have mistaken cronyism for capitalism. That's what we have on the right right. We have to embrace capitalism. We believe in a certain level of winners and losers without any empathy we can't level the playing field so yeah my question for democratic kind the following step up to the plate and start endorsing the greatest sources of good in the history of mankind and that is the american middle class and capitalism capitalism. Thank you all right. What would you ask. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very very much. So if i ask i would probably ask about tech 'cause. I'm like that like what are they gonna do what i would ask about check i. I'm never gonna get brought. It up really haven't brought it on what i what they haven't brought up at all but it's not a big thing. It's not a big topic. I think if you were still care if you were still a daily reporter what would you be interested uncovering that is i was just talking to scott about that backstage. I would like to see if i can get someone else fired like the uber guy i just. There's a a couple of companies. Would you like to see farad right now. I would like mark to move to chairman of facebook. I'd like to put a professional c._e._o. Cheryl she was fired. I i think she's hardly the point is i've written. I think he's not going down this road with you because he has full control of the company just like the work is has the work has all these these sub-standard juvenile men who are have complete control of companies is a problem. I think they fall into the same trap. That's the perversion of women have to navigate eight this hunger games to get to the sweet in technology and once they're there they become a protected class. We need more female c._e._o. Sites that we don't have an existential crisis every time we tried to fire one right. Yes ask because let me just say because women really are the problem in tak. That's how i get. Please give me a break..

I got that got that pool unless it's like a james bond by the way james bond is coming back for the twenty fifth film. It was announced today. Move along aw back to me all right okay. You go ahead so fear it. Just it's not about the agent of here. It's about the delivery right so we we all know the stats about sharks the idea the idea well the bottom line is about three times as many people will die having a vending machine fall on them and crush them this year than being by a shark but i would rather much rather like have a vending machine crush me then the death by twix bars stories i learned to surf in the bay area and then a kid had a chunk of his leg taken off by a great white and they said don't worry and serving lessons because what happens is the shark arctic great wide mistakes you i still takes you into his mouth and then realizing you're not a seal spits you out. I would rather die than have that experience when you when you rather have a sealed come up to you with an a._k._47. At some point seals are going to have access to a._k. Forty sevens and just kill you before actually having a great white clamp down on you and that moment of decision is as my food chain or not anyway so fucking sucked. I'm glad to be back back to you. Thank you you know there is some like stories i was looking at. There's a debate should locals. Deploy buoy drones to detect sharks. There's all kinds of things if they should get rid of the seals what what should happen. Is there a tech solution to this shark situation. Kill the seals in the sharks. Okay all right. Oh no any case scott. There's lots of news for us to talk about. I want to talk about just briefly. Something i tweet it today. Take on a lot of attention. It was a photograph of a white dude not getting up for a pregnant lady on the subway and set off a frigging 's firestorm on and i said you might want to look up and see this pregnant person in front of you and so it was really interesting because all the women had a million stories of this anyone who's been pregnant including myself of people not getting up got up for you and who didn't get up for you and so there was a a lot of ir towards this man who wouldn't get up and at the same time there was a whole postle of men who like one. Why didn't you just ask. Why didn't you say something like the personally personally phone and the second one is how do you like gender equality now and i'm not sure how that has anything to do with getting up for people in distress and the other one was what was the third third one. I've never seen it. Men always get up for women on buses so just general advice to men here. You should just as a rule never never assume unless you see the head crowning..

I don't suppose she left the Magic Arrow that I traded a quarter million dollars of diamonds for that that we gave her to stab camping Yati. If you showed up summary I'm going to say that I don't know I didn't know to look out for an Arrow and she drove it away. It disappeared Z.. Come easy go and we can look around for. Maybe it's still around here. I mean technically owned it. I mean I kind of gave it to give it to her. When the Vampires showed up last night you early you paid for it? I paid for it. Look you know will it if we needed. I'm sure it'll turn up one way or another either that or she'll or lumine will stab stabs lean to death with it. You never know okay so you think so. That's all she wrote for for Mary. Sawalha yeah apparently she was <hes> in a coma or something I don't magically asleep Antolin took her back and said all would be forgiven and Blah Blah Blah as much as I hate it. <hes> there you go. I guess I there's nothing we can do about it anyway C._S. G pulls up a stool at the little bar in the the you know the the counter in the high counter in the kitchen rubs his forehead and says well. I've had so many different magical creatures jump out and tell me things over the course of last five or six days that I have trouble keeping track of it all there was there was another dragon wagon who was telling us to get magic weapon of war to bribe another thing and I can't even keep it all straight in my head what I do know. Is that tonight I have <hes> I have a group of mercenaries arriving this. It is Wednesday today and tonight. I mean unless there's been a day that's passed. No it is Wednesday today that today is is the <hes> is the day that <hes> sarge and his boys are coming over or to a place YEP is a I. I even got the Captain Tire Corp.. Tyler with the with the fantastic ass to <hes> who's going I intended to have him fall in love with <hes> with lumine to keep her human but that's not gonNA happen the amazing you're not there by the way where whereas whereas Levi that's a good question. Are You on the Sofa or are you gone or he's. He's curled up over the corner of the Shah next to like the radiator part where it's nice and warm. He's ooh reckoning warm YEP so. Can I ask you a question real quick history. If I can ask you one back shirt you literally have a mercenary named tyler with the fantastic ass. No no he's just Corp.. Tyler Okay I was uh he he wins. He did a thousand squats on a dare got it. I was thinking hey Bob regarding newman. They'll hit it off. It would be a good thing but if she's not sort of give her something to care about other than her her unstoppable magical power struggle but you know if that's not going to happen. That's not going to happen all right and your question for me yeah. I've been doing some thinking in light of some stuff that happened. Well I mean all I'll just gesture grandly to the hang in the room with the dragon and the Greek goddess. I don't even know that you knew I'm here yet. I met you. I met you okay briefly. What do you want to do with Your Life Wellington? Are you trying to recruit me into Cobra not at all. I'm done with Cobra. My point is trying to recruit me into the whatever the other group was called I was it was one of well. It's long story. I don't know I don't know if the name of G._I.. Joe was there I was denied admittance to. America's elite special mission force was a turning point in my life that why joined Cobra well. I became a contractor first and then and then ended up in Cobra after that what I I wanNA do my life. I mean you don't want to you. You overcame what serious injury. I don't know your full story but I know that you have overcome a lot to get where you are today and you don't WanNa just order takeout and live in your garage for the rest of time we we're. I mean we're going to see it here. Man I mean honestly Kinda yeah but I mean you know I I make decent money doing my research stuff and selling it off to whatever and doing my thing and you know superhero in a little bit on the side and on the weekends well at life got another weekend coming up and I'm a good-looking guy can go to broad ripple. Get some women well. I'm afraid that in general the giant giant snake and other stuff that's going to be something of a <hes> yeah. It's GonNa my style yeah living in your the house is like Shh. It's worse than your parents. That's true that's true and I did miss last weekend out but you know what I mean we. I have this issue where I am. A joiner is one of my things I have. I've gone from the employees of one you know nefarious group to another have a weakness for powerful women of questionable questionable moral fiber. Who doesn't I'm beginning to think that I need to? I need to do something better with my life. Are you saying you want to form a super team like official real super team well. It would be better than just <hes> you know. If how can I put this. It would be better than just having <hes> the police show up at your house and wondering why you were fighting in the street like they did with <hes> <hes> with that is going to catch up to us and honestly we are as subtle as a wet fart in white pants. We are not cut out for being a secret group. Wow well yeah no. You're right. You're right. You're right okay just saying yeah. There's no point in not doing that. I Guess Affair I look at the clock. What time is it eight thirty? Uh well got some room over there too. I guess you're up here with me now. I'm a I'M GONNA go down to the workout area. Got Down there and do some curls push ups and whatnot wait until others start waking up already you wake up in a start in a weird room and then the memories come back to you as to where you are you. You send some movement out in the main area but you don't hear a lot of noise. It's as though they're actually trying to be quiet okay so I probably smell coffee. Oh yes coffee has already so I'm going to follow the scent of coffee addressed. Yes just Jackie just walked out. You know with all your clockwork bits out. "You finished okay and he stands there. Yes I'm sorry you can take store them now. Well Kinda. Let Drain it right. I don't WanNA spill. Don't know you're right true. Thank you so. What's your plan about going to the store? Oh if I were to get like a hydration pack a mobile sippy crap. It's a Campbell back moment. Actually that's pretty frequent BURLINGTON. It's not bad no that's not bad at all yeah probably do that. Keep it on hydration packs so when I need to just wear it yeah yeah you have a superhero ones it yeah. I just realized I'm still get all right so superhero onesie. It's like what's your weakness. It's like puncture wounds to my camelback. What's your weakness your fashion sense? Oh cute ones. It's not once you know what I'm trying to say. I don't know Taylor called UNITARDS unit. That sounds even worse than I think I was thinking of that by thought. You know that sounds really stupid so I must say onesie Nice Bodysuit Bodysuit. Oh you ruined it. That's like Mr Green Room Zuma or what is it the yeah sure what's the Japanese morph suits yeah so so after all right after a couple minutes he's like all right and he snaps his fingers and it's gone okay. Thank you very much my pleasure. Anything else needed this evening yeah. What else can we be of service with zero? Nothing just wanted to say that I hope our previous aggressions or in the past. What do you mean oh the sword neck beating thing yeah completely forgotten about it okay but didn't bother me? I didn't is is GONNA look like it bothered you. I mean obviously kick your physical thrashing notwithstanding. I mean more of a wound the pride I mean the body can be filled with holes. Those those can be speckled close real reason for that to be a problem. Where is the short one that I stabbed through the neck? She's gone oh well then. If we talk of wounds of pride died I'm still here no harm no foul well requisite amount of harm and no foul okay. Yeah I meant to be an immortal Bain that watches over a bank vault short of being exiled from this plane or excommunicated exercised if you will it would take someone tromping through the Astro Lor Nether planes lanes and freeing me by force will to keep me from doing my job. That sounds exacerbating. It's tiring at the very least he's using a lot of words within the X.. I didn't prefixed <hes> as we just heard all the loopholes. I didn't understand half the words you said but okay wonderful have a good day Sir and you Jugo the door all right and he walks out how the strangest people feel good has made a huge mistake. You're gem is stored with him. Why do I feel like we made to huge mistakes technically three because the statue is divided into two feel actually actually or four because I think Steve's gold coin is what the managers well? I'm a Labor into these matters but believe he just gave four excuses of how he could things could go awry anyway. The Way I look at is this <hes>. He told me he told us that he stores armies in his vaults which means since he probably storage lots of treasure mystical artifacts as long Cetera et CETERA. He's in this plane those he's not exercised as long as right but what I'm getting at is someone would have done that by now. It was really that easy. No just based on all the other junkie must be holding in as vaults that is very true. I'm sure is very difficult to get rid of that book yeah so the plan for her. Yes campaign Yati. Can yati point to the Whiteboard Hindu dry erase mercker draw the layout of his house. Everything you can remember about of his. I remain grow as everything vividly as though it happened only yesterday actually earlier today Okay Fair enough when you buy this time. It's probably past midnight. So what is today but yesterday's tomorrow so anyway so I'll I'll draw it out and we'll get with labels calls and everything things like how many guards are patrolling. Oh sure what time does it get. Deliveries aware usually sleeps during the day <hes> this is. Do you know no. I don't he never he he doesn't sleep at the House staying with that that does not do us okay well. He arrives pretty regularly. Take the eraser and I'm getting ready to raise he goes but what was your arrives pretty regularly every early evening. Yeah also open we would do this during the day so track his motorcade or whatever it will yeah I it would take a little bit longer you could it. Just you know role in heavy hard right now but track his motorcade back in the morning. What time does he leave in the morning to go sleep even though we don't know where he goes? Can I in tuition that or cure I don't know I assume I'd be intuition. That actually be reason. Oh yeah you can reason the F. out of that eighty six. That's going to be unreason or intuition. You've got that both that's both goods okay so that that's I'm sorry that's just at the Ele- summertime it's like it's like four thirty in the morning wintertime. It's five thirty five forty five so when it's light out more he leaves a little earlier but usually about about forty minutes before sunset are sunrise daybreak all right so if it's a little past midnight now we can catch a few hours then we have to scope out as place until he leaves and then somehow follow it to wherever goes so question being how long the we need to figure out how long we have until the package arrives and Bangladesh Nice Air quotes well Bangladesh is actually a place. You don't really need to say that it's not really going going there. Bangladesh proper right so that's if we're going to have to SCOPE and try to figure out if it's leaving from India from Indianapolis Airport <hes> with a single layover in let's just be generous and say l._A._X.. We're looking at a is a plane leaves Indian three something in the Ballpark of twenty six hours so we have twenty six hours to uh well but that assumes zero delay and we're supposed to send it like overnight or just chip it ship it. I mean it can take weeks all about you. I ship take weeks. Do do you really think that something this precious to him is GONNA take weeks depending on how he shipped it truth. Will I shifted based on the manifesto. I say presenting the manifest. Can I read the festival yeah. It's an English okay so second day here second day air so that means we have four over a day so so my thought was this if we could track camping Yati to where he goes for the day then that gives us another data plan. We hit him the next day. Fair enough sounds good to me. So how do we scope about and track. I would think commander shotgun could easily manufacturer any of those things depend on the cars true he could probably put while the tracker things I'm a gun and and then we could just cheap e._s.. That crap who oh another Guy Commander Shotgun Firmer Cobra agent you heard of Cobra like the Hail Cobra. Yes like the snake like little yeah but it's like a terrorist organization. He's reform I I I've heard it encyclopedic. He's a is many useful uses essentially for this group right. You can make many many different things how soon will return the next day. Dare show yeah okay door. We assume that he can handle that then. We need to talk about what we need to do to take camping Yada yeah once we have him alone right yes so we need to research at Akilah Vampire. According to Bram stoker sunlight is a pretty pretty solid way <hes> so simple terms obviously we can build on this planet or not saying this plane is foolproof in any way shape or form but if we were to get a hold of his coffin and because you're already strong you're already strong. I can get strong <hes> we can just hall the coffin out of wherever it is that he sleeps during the day and good morning sunshine the Earth says die right well the really the sons has die the beginning do stick to the heart or silver garlic. I imagine that all work all that stuff does the corner all the movies. I've watched according to Branston what can go wrong. What's again one of my talents trivia movies nice and so the day draws to close? You're beginning to feel tired you beginning to wind down and potentially with you. Had you stare here before you two paths that that opened before your your thoughts one is we could go kick the Hornets Nest and plan to hunt down campaign Yati and bring him to his final demise. The other path is the potential to lay your head down to sleep this evening with no worries no conflicts who staying where tonight yeah Ms Lillian upstairs in your Ed crap with the bunny go figure that out but this is a guestroom on the second floor and obviously there's the sofas down here. I'll just sleep by the eater I'm fine. I'll sleep on the Sofa so you can take the bed. I find a lot to stay well. We might need you for something your your information right now. Insider see got it. "Picture of the body. God didn't put any one person in charge or give a select group of People. These superhuman abilities to go accomplish everything. He gave various gifts to every person and then instructed us to operate in unity and love to change the world. Now it would be foolish for the I to say to the hand. I'm better than you. I don't need you and this is what happens in a lot of people who have a leadership role as leaders. We often see ourselves as a big deal as important and you are important. Leadership is critical. That's why I'm so passionate about it. No organization can move beyond its leadership. And if you're a leader you are very very critical so you might think of yourself as the brain or the heart. Okay really critical. But what good is your brain with no blood? What can your heart accomplish without some means of action vocal cords tongue hands feet? You see we as leaders have to understand that we're still a component of the body and every single piece of the body has been given and gifted in order to function in unison to accomplish something big you know in a global marketplace that we operate in today as leaders and we have problems that have increasing complexity. It's not possible for any one person to have all the answers. Google has a guy who's the VP of what he calls people operations. He's essentially their human resources. Director's name is Laszlo. Bock and he says that humility is one of the traits that they are looking for most of all when Google makes a new hire. He says this is a quote. You're in goal is. What can we do together to problem? Solve I've contributed my piece and then I step back and is not just humility and creating spaces for other to contribute its intellectual humility without humility. You're unable to learn. This is the guy who is in charge of hiring at Google. He's saying that humility is a critical resource in their success. See I don't care how vital you believe you are to the mission and like I said you are vital to the mission. Great leadership requires the humility to recognize that. You need lots of other people around you with gifts. You don't have or even gifts you do have but then enable you to replicate yourself in someone else. You gotTa have an accurate appraisal of others. They're worth their value and their necessity to achieve anything. You want to achieve continue with that accurate appraisal of other people. Let's pause from this discussion for moment. Talk about your personal brain as a leader. You need one. You can't develop a personal brand though without a website the easiest cheapest and fastest way to get online as for my friends at W. E. Engine de vp engine is a hosting platform focus specifically on wordpress the number one way busy entrepreneurs and leaders get online now right now. Wbz engine is offering listeners to the Scott Ross leadership podcast twenty percent off their startup plan to go to Scott Ross online dot com slash boasting to get twenty percents off. You can be online and building your brand and under thirty minutes now. If you already have a wordpress site you should be hosting it with WBZ. Engine I moved my site from one of the really big popular hosting companies and my website performance skyrocketed. They have a migration tool that is idiot. Proof it requires no technical skill to get on. Wbz engine so go to Scott Ross online dot com slash coasting and get twenty percents off your plan with WBZ engine. Build your brand start today. All right let's get back to the steps towards developing humility in leadership and let's move to number four which is pray for it. Pray for humility. Start praying daily to be a more humble person. Prayer is transformative. The power of the Holy Spirit of transformative begin asking God regularly for a more humble spirit for a more humble attitude. You get what you think about and it will be hard to remain a prideful or selfish person if you're continually seeking the mind of Christ and Christ likeness through your life say Scott praying guy or praying gala. I don't do that well. No time like the present my friend. Let's get rolling it. Does it require some sort of fancy language or special words? You just talk like you're talking to your best friend. Trust me. He already knows what it is that you're gonNA say. The exercise drives a lot of value in just doing it. Just enunciating it so pray for pray for humility number five. Spend time with leaders who exhibit humility and observe them and watch them and take notes. Try to hang around with leaders who exhibit true humility leaders who are strength under control leaders who elevate others leaders who make others feel important. Who helped them become their best selves and take notes on what they do? You know next week. We're GonNa talk about what this actually looks like to be a humble leader. How do you model it? How do you operate in humility but go find some people that are already doing that? And just observe them now. What if you can't find anybody that fits the bill? Well first of all. I'd say you might need some new peers in your peer group That's probably a bad sign but you can get a little shortcut you can. You can kind of cheat the system by reading biographies of Humble Leaders. I regard if he's all the time because I want to learn from the lives of those people who've already run the race and made decisions and we can see the fruit and the consequences of those decisions. Here's just a few of the leaders that I really admire that. Come to mind as humble leaders that you could read their biographies George Washington. Many of you guys know. I'm a huge fan. Frederick Douglass unbelievable James Madison and Benjamin Franklin. All four of those are people that you would do very well to study in terms of the humility. They exhibited in their leadership so spend time with other leaders who exhibit humility. So that it's obvious what it looks like and you can just simply imitate what you see in them. Sixth eliminate media that stokes the fire of pride. This is such a big deal. In our culture today eliminate media that stoke the fires of Pride Social Media Often tends to make us envious and prideful and disconnected and lots of people are spending inordinate amount inordinate amounts of time on social media where everyone is trying to look better than everyone else. We had this thing. We call a Selfie. And what a joke I mean. How gross is it that we have a word for this consumption? We have with people looking at us. Look at me. Look at how awesome my life is. Of course we know it's not real we know it's manufactured but we look at it and it stokes in US. These unhealthy emotions jealousy isolation depression. Listen don't play the game. Just get rid of it put yourself in environments that spur you to be the person you desire to be an eliminate the junk that robs you of your joy and robs you of your ability to stay in a humble track. Don't don't go down that social media path social media has its place but make sure that's what it is that it's in its place because if you stay there you know. Comparison is a thief. Is Going to rob you of the leadership that you could cultivate in yourself if you were in a more healthy head space in a more healthy environment. Okay last option..

"Something. You'll have to pray for me about but I'm just a ridiculously die. Hard Dallas Cowboys Fan. Well it's the off season right now. You know what cowboys fans and every other. Nfl team fans thinking about men. Who are we going to draft this year? One if we can get any free agents. Why do we care about that? We care about that because better players make a better team. Well the better your players in your team the better your team. So if you have a growth oriented culture that is the derivative of your humility as leader as a leader. What that's GONNA mean. Is that your people are constantly rising and when the people rise the whole organization rises. You don't build the business. And then the people are the byproduct you build the people and the business is the byproduct talk about just a couple of other things and then we're going to wrap up the other thing. That humility does is. It gives the leader the ability to be absolutely honest with their people. And I can't tell you how important this is because I've seen so many leaders through pride and ego self destruct because they paint themselves into a corner you see if I've made it out where I don't ever make mistakes. I always do the right thing. I'm a genius. I'm brilliant. I'm perfect well. Guess what the second I make a really big mistake and I know it and I need to change course. It's going to be a thousand times harder to admit it and change the course and I'm very often likely to just take my organization right off the cliff. This happened with General. George custer I mean I don't know if you guys remember the story of Ca- customer but you know I think it was a battle a little bighorn. I mean it was a massacre and he was so arrogant in so prideful and he had all these people in zere saying. This is a really bad idea. You don't have the resources you're making a mistake. And he couldn't admit he was wrong and he gets there and realize oh my goodness this is a really bad deal. We're in a really bad spot. But he couldn't confess it. He lost the lives of every one of his men. I mean it was absolute one of the greatest slaughters and military history. This is what happens when you set yourself up with pride as your underpinning. You cannot change course. You can't go to your people and say Hey. I screwed up guys. Let's all rally. I've made a big mistake. I really need your help instead. You GotTa Keep Perpetuating the myth that you don't make mistakes so if you will just start with humility as your beginning point and you're being transparent as we go through and we're gonNA talk about how to model humility in the next coming segments but transparency. I think you will just be able to guess. That's an obvious component of modeling humility. You're able to be transparent and confess your weaknesses. Confessed your your mistakes man. We here's the reason why we made this decision. It was strategic at the time. But this didn't go the way we thought it was GONNA go. That's on us. Here's what we're doing. Now we're changing direction. It becomes much simpler to change. Course so guess what that means that means agility and your organization and I don't have time to get into it right now. But one of the most critical components of any organization in the twenty first century is agility companies and organizations and teams that cannot shift quickly to the changing tied to the changing environment out in the marketplace. They're going to get left behind. They're going to go the way the dinosaur or marketplace's changing too fast so you have to be an agile organization and humility actually creates and leads to agility okay. The last thing that humility allows you to do is to reply with charity when you are faced with malice when you're attacked if you're a prideful person you're likely to lash out in response but if you're humble you can respond with charity and by not responding in kind by not turning around and replying with the same malice. That comes your direction. You know what you do a you. Don't burn bridges. You build bridges number two. You let time become a magical balm SAV on wounds and reveal ultimately truth and more importantly you know what you end up doing you end up going back and getting all the benefits we just talked about because you garner the respect of the people who are watching. What's going on you? Garner influence because you're now the underdog you're the one being attacked rather than on the attack. You start to show that. Yeah maybe I did make mistakes. Let's learn from that together. And you. Further perpetuate this learning environment and again. If you did make a mistake it allows you to shift course very quickly and because you haven't set yourself up as the end all be all in the first place people are like why are you attacking the guy. He's just a guy he's one of us and of course so humility gives you grace you know one of my favorite parables in the Bible is the parable of the debtor and I think about this parable almost every day. And it's the if you don't know the story you know there's a guy who does the king this amount of money that you can never pay just for our day and time. Just imagine iota trillion dollars. It's just not possible you're never GONNA pay back. Trillion dollars ever is nothing you can do and you know he's supposed to have this horrible punishment goes and he begs for forgiveness from the king and the king does forgive him. He doesn't just say okay. It's less he says. I'm wiping the debt cleaned. The guy is like overwhelming Lee relieved. He gets up and leaves the King's presence and he says or he walks out in the street and he notices a guy on the street that owes him a penny he owed a trillion out notices the guy a penny any immediately calls the police and says that guy needs to go to debtor's prison because he owes me a penny he won't forgive the guy a penny the king hears about this and he is furious furious with that guy any any punishes in in a much more harsh manner than he would have even originally been punished and Jesus says this is what the Kingdom of Heaven is like and I just think about that all the time and I just tell you. The thing that I know is that I have been forgiven debt that I could never repay. And so who am I to not give grace when grace can be given when it's in my power to do it and by operating with humility? Even though it's sometimes really really difficult it puts me in that position. Take a respond with charity and respond with love and to turn the other cheek. And that's what I want to model you know as a group of leaders here altogether. We're this giant flock of eagles and I want us to model what this look like. Looks like because it's very counterintuitive to the world. The world doesn't understand it and you know what it's GonNa do is going to make the world go. Wow what is up with those people? "Up involved in a lot of stuff. That's beneath them. That they wouldn't want to be involved in because they hadn't thought it through in the beginning. Well all of our relationships should to a degree. Be like this. Obviously it's not as critical as with our mate but we should be thinking about these things. You can love everyone but you should have standards for who gets your valuable time in big quantities because your peer group is so critical to your success. Here's some of the standards. I have people that I invest a lot of time. With first of all they got to be a growth oriented person. I don't have a lot of time for people who just want to exist and just love the status quo. You need to be in motion. You know need to be into the things I'm into necessarily you don't need to be growing in the areas. I'm growing but I'm just fascinated by people WANNA grow. I want to be around growing people and I know that growth is a process that universal. And you could be growing in this area of your life and I could be growing in this other area my life but we're going to be able to contribute to each other talking about that now also know that. I'm not gonNA leave you behind. I'm not gonNA grow. Pass you because you're going to keep growing alongside me so we're going to be able to stay on this journey together. That's a really worthwhile relationship. The person I'm going to spend a lot of time with gotta be authentic. I mean a lack of integrity or authenticity is an absolute nonstarter. I mean I'm just a real transparent person probably transparent to a fault but if I have to work to figure out who you are. If it's like really hard to figure out what your agenda is or I find out like you're one person to me but another person other people you know. I don't have the energy for that. It's just not time well spent. I'm moving on again. I can love you unconditionally. And you know she might watch football game together or whatever but not a lot of times going to be spent together. That person has been a lot of time with must encourage me now. They don't have to encourage me directly although that'd be cool too if they would just say encouraging things but they got to encourage me with their behavior with their model. You know somebody that I I like things about their life that I wanNA emulate certain things. Now nobody's perfect people. I want to emulate because of who they are in maybe their health and fitness or other people in their relationships. But there's gotta be something there that encourages me and spurs me on Spurs me higher. Things they gotTA love people. I mean if you're just not into loving people we're not going to have very many big things we can do together because my whole life is about people. It's all it is all I wanNA do and you know if somebody's not into that. That's just my standard. Maybe this isn't gonNA be your standard. I'm just trying to give you guys examples of the fact that I have a standard for the peer group that I establish and these don't need to be your standards. Just giving you some insights into what it looks like. I have to as an example a avid standard of needing to be able to have crucial conversations with people. You know in every relationship. There's missed expectations and where there's missed expectations. There's opportunity for bitterness and resentment and for the devil to get in there and start to plant seeds of doubt and liars to come in and and plant seeds of untruth then so you need to be able to have crucial conversations with people you need to in a kind and loving way but in a an affirmed able to call each other out and not have it just like immediately go sideways. Because you're not mature enough to have those conversations. I mean I had a conversation somebody the other day and they were like you know. I didn't call you because you and wanted to talk to me. I'm like yeah I would`ve. I wish cursed me out. That'd been way better. If you just call them and curse me out more healthy see if we can't have those conversations then we have a problem so I'm an invest and people have the maturity to have those kinds of crucial conversations and then that the genuinely cheer for me and that's not because I've got an ego but I'm gonNA genuinely cheer for them. We shouldn't be in relationships with people who wanNA bring us down and I know of so many people who invest so much time in people who legitimately want them to lose mean that to me is insane that you would spend huge swaths of time with someone that actually doesn't want your best interest. I don't have time for that. So they got a genuinely cheer for me. These are just some of my standards and I do have standards for my peer group. And so I think it's very important for you to this. Peer Group thing is going to be so critical. You've heard it said you're going to become the average of the five people you hang around. You WanNa have income. You're gonNA become the income. The your income will be the same as the average of the five people you hang around your fitness your relationships. I mean you know. I'm not trying to beat anybody up but I just I hate divorce. Hate the word hate divorce and so. I'll hang around people who hate divorced too. I don't want to be around people who are okay with divorce if you're divorced. I'm not judging you. I love you absolutely and I know the pain and the suffering the debt involves. I mean my mom went through it and I was part of that and you know I. I'm not saying this in a judgmental way. I'm just saying like you know we all WanNa give up. Sometimes mayor marriage sometimes has its challenges as hard and if I was to ever ever let cross my mind. I want every single person that I hang around with the come in and tell me what an idiot I am. Smack me down. Because that's their standard. Steve I'm hanging around with people who are okay with just letting it go. Maybe I'll let it go to your. Peer Group is so important. Have high standards for your Peer Group? Okay last two. Things is just a couple words of caution. I cannot emphasize how critical this is. You obviously can tell that I believe it is the pillar like I said one of the pillars of success but a caution would be not swing the pendulum so far that it becomes self destructive and I mean two things by that the first thing I would tell you is you need to avoid perfectionism as you go through this exercise of changing your standards you see raising. Your standards doesn't mean expecting perfection. I don't expect perfection. Actually sometimes I do of myself. It's one of my flaws and I have to be very cognizant of that and give myself latitude because see you can see your some selfish someone. That is a certain thing and still not perfect yet like you could. For instance start to say man. I'm a saver. I save a lot of money. I put a lot of money away. That's just who I am and then start with five bucks a month five bucks a month if it's more than zero and that's where you're at now that's a great start and every time you put five bucks into the bank. You're you just tell yourself that same story see there I am? I'm saver? Five bucks went in there on. Multiply money a money multiplier. Baby you can see yourself as a person who is people oriented. I'm a people person and then just simply start by. Maybe sending a couple of text messages of encouragement to people. You already know this saying I'm a people person doesn't mean that you're suddenly going into the mall in like shaking hands with strangers. At a time I mean that might be super scary for you but you can still see yourself as a people person and then be on the way towards the behavior always moves to meet the standard. Write that down. The behavior always moves to meet the standard make. Sure you don't reverse that by the way because see if your standard is high over time your behavior will become high if the standard is low over time. Your behavior will be reduced to meet the standard. The worst thing is reverse if the behavior sucks and you just basically like give up and you just lower your standard did just meet. How bad behavior is. That's a really unhealthy place. Remember the behavior moves to meet the standard so raise the standard and then let the behavior move over time. I'll give you an example from Christian discipleship. There's this idea called sanctification and no-one you when you come to Christ your save that means you have eternal life and you're going to heaven but you're not perfect yet you're not yet senlis but you now have been freed from the bonds of sin and death and you now are capable of moving to perfection. You now have it be. It's possible. You Listen Lewis Life but you're not going to immediately in the devils GonNa immediately come to you and remind you what a terrible person you are and see. You're you're you're lying to God because you say you're Christian. No it's not about that. It's like well now. I'm spiraling upward. My Standard has risen. And now my behavior is going to move and rise to that standard. That's the way of life. It's the sanctification process. You set the standard high and then you move. The behavior moves then. That leads to the last little bit of caution. Just take baby steps. Take baby steps. Move THE STANDARD HIGH FAST. Move The standard way up and then give yourself permission to just start doing what you can do. All you can do is all you can do. All you can do is enough or Williams. All you can do is all you can do. All you do is enough to take baby steps. Just make sure the baby steps that are going in the right direction guys. This has been episode one sixteen of the Scott. "Now the third thing you need to do is you need to get really honest about the source of your standards because for many of us the standard that we have settled into accepting wasn't even given to us by ourselves it was derived from some third party. Who's standards? Are you really living with? Let's get really honest. Are you living based on your parents? Standard your peer groups standard. Your friends co workers pass doubters. Who told you what you could never do. The neighborhood where you grew up one of the phrases I just think is silly. People always say man. You can't forget where you came from. You know who says that the people still there. That's who says that. The people who are still sitting there are telling the people who are rising man. You can't forget where you came from. It's their way of subtly and with passive aggressiveness criticizing. The crabs have climbed out of the bucket. I don't know if you've ever seen crabs in a bucket but if you throw a bunch of crabs in a bucket one crab starts to climb out the other crabs grab reach up grab. It's leg and pull it back down the people who don't want to move or the one you tried to remind you that you better not forget. You came from listen. I had some good things about where I came from but most of where I came from. I don't want anything to do with. I want nothing to do with broken homes broken dreams alcohol mediocrity debt the frivolous use of my time zero impact on people that can make a list as long as marm get. I used my background as my standard man. I would be absolutely stuck in a spot that I would be miserable to find myself in. Never apologize for having high standards. Never people who really want to be in your life will rise to meet a high standard. People are addicted to the opinions of other people and most of the time those other people do not live by the standards that you aspire to get really honest with yourself about the source of your standards in every area of Your Life. I mean make a list of all the areas of your life and think about. How did I arrive at this? Is What's acceptable. How did I come to the conclusion that this was o? K? We're going to be addicted to the opinions of other people. It's almost not. There's almost no way around it. The question is which people are addicted to their opinion which leads to the next thing that can dramatically affect your standards. Get AROUND PEOPLE WITH HIGH STANDARDS. Put yourself in an environment where people with really high standards exist and it would be great if we could add the bonus of those people being the kind of people who will challenge you either challenge you through their model or just outright challenge. You write this down. It is hard to see complacency in the mirror it is hard to seek complacency in the. Mir. We always justify our behaviors to ourselves. We judge other people by their behavior. But we judge ourselves by our intentions. Will I intended to do that? I want to be better in that area. It's hard to see complacency in the mirror so wherever you want high standards you want high standards in your fitness. You want high standards in your In your financial life you want high standards in your relationship. I promise you if you start hanging out with people who have very high standards in those areas your life will change WanNa be fit easy. Hang out with people. You will make different choices when you're at the restaurant you'll see what they start order. You'll start to do the same. They're posting their pictures at the gym. You'll kind of need to do the same they'll be their conversations would be revolving around you know. How do I reduce my recovery time? So the my muscles increased faster. Boom never had that conversation but now that's what they're talking about. So that's what I start talking about once your money to multiply. Well how many people are you hanging out with on a daily basis? That you're talking about growing their wealth are you. Are you around people who are all the time talking about you? Know Different investment strategies. And what's going on with crypto currency? Right now is that legit or not legit and you know where what are ways to benefit myself from the tax code man the tax codes changing where the things. I need to be aware of to make my money go further now based on the law. We got all these people by the way. They're complaining about the tax code. Hey it is what it is. Why not figure out how to maximize it in your favor. That's the conversation you need to be having. You can't control that control which you can control are year round people who that's their standard to control what they can control instead of being. Weiner's are year round a bunch of victims or you bunch of people who are champions who take control of whatever situation. They're in and just decided to win. In spite of their circumstances you see if you wanNA raise your standards. Get around people with really high standards. It'll change everything you've heard me say many times. That leaders are readers and something that I am very passionate about is constantly putting good information into my brain the latest and the best thinking from around the world in the various industries that I care about and people are always astonished at how much reading I get accomplished and may think how is it possible. How do you do it? One of my secret. Weapons IS AUDIBLE DOT com. And then I'm GONNA give you a couple of warnings. The last thing I would just ask you know after we've been really with ourselves about our belief system and after we've been honest about our personal standards and after we've gotten honest about the source of our standards and we've put ourselves in an environment of people who have higher standards another question we need ask ourselves is. Let's get outside of us now and let's look forward. What standards do we have others? You See. I've said many times. It's not about you and it's not about you and it's not about you in this place to because it really for you to live. The life you want is GonNa require that you have a high standard for other people your standards for those around. You are GonNa play a massive role. I'll give you an analogy just from one aspect of the coaching that I give to. My Children and that coaching is around identifying their future mate. I believe that the most impactful and significant decision. They're ever GONNA make in their life after the decision to trust in the Finnish door. Christ is who they're going to marry because nothing affects your life more deeply more significantly in a more pervasive way than the person. That is your spouse. It is absolutely the most important decision you ever make. And so we talked our kids all the time about that process in about the standards. They need to have for that process and one of the things we talked about as a little system called the negotiable and non-negotiables list they need to have an objective list of what is what is a non-negotiable in their spouse. So for instance for my kids and non-negotiable is that they have to be a Christian. Another non-negotiable is for my kids. That can't be a smoker. You can argue with them if you want. That's their standard. So that's a non negotiable. I'll meet a smoker. They're out I'm meeting on Christian. They're going to be my friend. Hang out all the time. Not GOING TO BE MY spouse then. The negotiable list like you know really important things like cowboys fan or that they like. Jazz music. That'd be cool. But they could live without it. It's non-negotiable and because they're thinking objectively about these standards. They can very quickly weed through people and sort through people to figure out who is a candidate and who is not a candidate what most people do is they just kind of accept what comes Adam and so. They ended.

"A biblical counselor. Somebody like that and come to the leader ready to go to work. Ready to become a winner. And that leads to the very last technique that you can use that as a surefire way to ruin your relationship with the leader and that is to break trust confidant confidentiality or loyalty. Let me say that again to break trust confidentiality or loyalty. Nothing is going to ensure that a leader never talks to you in an intimate way. At least they may say hi to you in public but they will never spend intimate time with you. If confidant confidentiality is broken if trust is broken if loyalty is broken. Let me give you some examples of some things. You could be sure to do to offend the lear confidentiality. Let's say that you're talking to the leader and the leader really wants to pour into you so to impart some wisdom to you. One of the best ways that mentors can impart wisdom to younger. People is to just tell stories and let the let the younger person kind of learn from the stories so some of those stories end up being quite personal so a leader shares a personal story with you. And then what they find. Is that that story get shared with other people. Did you know that in their youth they Blah Blah Blah? Did you know that just a few years ago? They struggled with XYZ. The second that that confidentiality is broken leaders. Not going to want to spend a lot of time with you. The other one is to break trust and this is to lie or mislead the leader in some way you know to tell them things that are just not true to come to them with situations that are gossip in nature and to misrepresent. What's really going on under the auspices of I care about this other person or I need your help with them or whatever. This is something you can take to the bank. Anything you ever say about the leader or that is about someone else. That wasn't true anytime you ever lied to a leader. It will all ways get back to them. Always one hundred percent of the time you know. It's just mind boggling to me how people think that what they're saying is going to stay private. It's just not and so if you break trust with a leader it is super super fragile. It'll be very very difficult to get it back. And that goes hand in hand with the last way you can do this and that is break loyalty and the way you do that is to deify the leader in some way behind their back can't tell you how often this happens in front of the leader. They're awesome you love them. You respect them. You like their help. You'd like their feedback. You'd like their wisdom but then the second they're not there if you're in a group of people sitting around the water cooler kind of bitching and moaning about the leader saying bad things. You're right there in that conversation. You don't walk away and for sure you don't have the leaders back shut. This shut that conversation down you join in. Let me just tell you something. It will always always get back to the leader. There is no leader. I know that doesn't know everything being said about them. Even to the people who are smiling to their face and so a rule of thumb just in general by the way since you're an emerging leader is just assume everything you ever say is going to be heard. Never say anything that you wouldn't want repeated on a video screen because guess what it'll probably be shared in some form or fashion and it will normally be twisted a little bit so you WanNa make it so when it's twisted this twisted in a way that the only way to twist it would be positive so just keep that in mind but you can. I sure make sure leader checks out on the second you de edify them or you demonstrate that you're to face to them in any way they're going to check out on you. They're not gonNA INVEST THEIR TIME WITH YOU. So let's quickly review one thin to leader. You WanNa make sure that you get to be Lone Ranger and riding roughshod on this road to success by yourself without mentor ship and without council or with the Council of other people who were kind of the blind leading the blind because a lot of people who like to offend leaders. They like to flock together which is awesome. Because then you know it's just they doubly ensure that they've got the leader to check out on them. Because I didn't mention that but it's kind of a little bonus one if the leader sees that the person or the people you're getting council from foolish then the leader knows that person's probably the next foolish person in the group. So here's some things you can do. Make sure you ask for advice and then begin to argue with it. Make sure that as soon as you were given some blessing by the you. Don't show any gratitude but ask for something more or something. In addition to you can always ask questions that you could have easily found the answer to with a little effort. You could only call the leader if you have to complain or you need something personally. You could make sure you ignore their advice and just keep getting the same result. You could act like they need to be your shrink in. That's the only reason you want to spend time with them. And you could break trust confidentiality and loyalty implement any of these techniques guys and it will just you'll be wowed at how quickly leaders will not want to invest a lot of time in you guys have obviously done this a little bit tongue in cheek throughout this. Take this advice to heart. You need leaders in your life. You need mentors in your life and you're gonNA WANNA avoid these mistakes if you're going to keep leaders in your life if you have leaders who are willing to pour into your results are going to be exponentially greater and you will achieve those results much faster. There's been valuable. It's been episode. One fifteen you can find this at Scott Ross online dot com slash one. "Order to impact more people. I think I've told you the story in this podcast before about the fact that I was mentored by John. Maxwell on one of the founding members of the John Maxwell Leadership and coaching and speaking team and John is of a powerful brand into himself. I mean he's published. I think it's whatever seventy plus books. Now he's obviously bestselling author massively successful keynote speaker and seminar speaker and yet he didn't feel like he was reaching enough people so he wanted a way to extend himself to touch more people and so he partnered with people like me to figure out how to do that. And to equip more people to go and touch more lives than he could individually touch because obviously if he mentors ten guys. Those Tin can touch people. He's not going to touch. It's a way to extend his leadership. That's the way all great leaders think they're trying to create leverage. Well I don't want to offend you. But you're only as valuable to the leader as your conduit to impact other people can be if you can become a con conduit to impact a lot of lives on behalf of that leader. You're very valuable. If the leader pouring through you is is hitting a damn if there if you're not a conduit if you're more of a reservoir than a river than the leader can't impact a lot of people through you and you become less valuable you're less of a quality investment of that leaders time you know one of the great examples of this in history is the Apostle. Peter Peter was loved by Jesus Jesus was his leader was his mentor. He definitely loved him. But Peter was all about Peter. Peter was about Peter's agenda. You may remember the story where Jesus tells the disciples that he's GonNa have to suffer and Peter Step is. You're not going to suffer. That's not how this is going to go not on my watch. I've got a different plan. And that's where the famous quote. Jesus get behind me Satan because Peter was tempting him to not go through with the suffering. Well that was Peter's agenda and then of course we know the famous story of him denying. Christ why because it was about him. There's about his agenda but later Jesus gives him a chance to grow. And there's a very famous section there. Where after the resurrection? Jesus in with Peter and Peter's kind of ashamed of what happened knowing that he he denied Christ and Jesus comes up to me says. Do you love me and Peter says you know that I do and Jesus then therefore if you love me feed my lambs. He says at three times. Listen to what he says. They're feed my lambs. Peter is valuable to Christ in so much as Christ can feed his people through Peter. That's the way it works. One leader pouring into another person. That's a reservoir a pipeline. Four the blessing so the leader is reaching more people than they could reach all alone. If you're not that reservoir if you're not that conduit you're really not helpful to the leader and it's a way to shut down your relationship with the leader. You need to be in discussion with the leader about becoming a person who can serve others. You need to be in discussion with the leader about how to best. Serve more people now. Guess what if you did that? You'd be blessed in the process. You'll get the blessing of the leader in the process. You'll get the you know the selfish stuffy want in the process you'll also earn the right to vent and complain and ask for selfish things as well as long as you didn't make it about that as long as it was clear to the leader that it wasn't about you so again I know that maybe that's not some of your goal if you want to make sure that the leader doesn't spend a Lotta time with you. I think this is one of your best avenues just known and complain when you call them and only ask them for selfish needs. Just make sure that they understand this person's really more of a reservoir while we're on the subject of ways to blow out your leaders and your mentors. You know one thing you can do. That would cause a mentor to have to spend time with. You is to have them be your professional coach to actually compensate them for their time. I do professional coaching on a very very limited scale every single year. But it's something I enjoy doing. It's just with my schedule. I don't have a ton of time to do it but going into the new year. I have opened up my personal scheduled to add just a handful of coaching clients. And if you've struggled with finding a mentor someone who is poor into you? I would be honored to be your coach as we enter into two thousand eighteen. Your coach is going to go away very very shortly as soon as we enter the new year. So I highly recommend that you take advantage of that again. Scott's online dot COM SLASH. Coaching enter the code. Podcast for twenty percent off the next great technique you could use to offend. A leader is to not implement any of their advice or counsel and continued to get the same results for an ongoing period of time. I just think that would be a super effective way to demonstrate. You don't really care about the leader being in your life and spending their time. Investing their time in you because again leaders are investing their time. Now they're not looking for perfection but they are looking for improvement. And so when you don't even try to implement their advice it quickly causes them to grow tired of that process. That's a waste of their time. You know I teach sales people and oftentimes I will mentor. Somebody will call me. And they'll say I'm just not getting the results I want. You know I can't get a yes or I'm running into this objection or whatever and I will teach them some sales techniques now what I know is that they can only digest so many techniques at once but I also know that when they go to implement this technique technique by itself might work some of the Times. But it's actually going to create a new objection or a new hurdle in the sales process. Now they're going to need to master technique a the creates the new problem before they can master technique be that ultimately solves the whole thing but they don't know that and I'm not telling them that and so they will call me if I if I don't get a call back from them or when we speak the next time they don't mention the new problem. Guess where that tells me. They didn't even try to implement the first step. They didn't even attempt to do what I advise them to do. Their mentor ship techniques that I will teach for dealing with challenging people on your team for instance and it should result in some specific follow-up steps no follow up. Guess what they didn't even try. It's a very very clear if I see someone continuing to get exactly the same results I know. There's an issue there following through on the advice that I gave them and it makes me feel like it's probably not really worth the investment that I'm making so if you want to make sure that you make you don't have the ongoing mentorship of a leader and council and wisdom of leader very simply. Just take their advice. Let it go in one ear out the other and just keep doing exactly what you've been doing before you you saw out there council okay. Couple last ones and we'll wrap up. I hope this is helpful to you. You know I'm I do get a lot of questions about how to make sure that leaders don't want to spend time with you and I just I wanted to put it all into one single episodes so that. We've KINDA got the go to guide the how to offend lear. One Oh one and I. I hope we're accomplishing that for you. Now the the last two techniques are these the thing you could do next and you could do this all by itself but especially if you add this into any of the techniques. I've talked about up to this point. I mean it's a home run to get rid of the leader in your life and that is to act like the leader is your psychologist now. It is true that leadership is a lot of psychology. If we'RE GONNA LEAD PEOPLE. We've gotTA KNOW PEOPLE WE'VE GOTTA love people as you've heard me say we've got embrace the messy -ness of life but you go into the leader need to understand that the leader is not there to be your shrink so you know your dad always telling you that you were going to be a failure and now that's created self esteem issues and you want the leader to fix that. Hey listen I understand. The leader understands they care but the leader doesn't have time to fix the issue that that creates for you. That's not their role. You gotta figure that stuff out somewhere else. The leader is there to help you get results again. The leader is there to impact people. You have to be a resource in that regard. Wow Scott that's really harsh that you act like you wouldn't care about that personal thing that somebody's dealing with. Maybe that's the hurdle I get it but is it really that harsh. I mean the real world is about results. It's about creating value. Leaders are focused on creating the most value for most people and getting bogged down into. Someone's really personal issues. Doesn't facilitate that now when you bring that stuff to the leader. They're going to be kind about it especially if they're a good leader. They're going to be empathetic. They might even recommend some options some books some seminars but they're gonna make a mental note. This might be a person I need to limit my time with because ultimately and I said this in last episode winners or people who just figure it out they don't let themselves ruminate and go round and round the mulberry Bush on stuff. Look my dad told me I was never going to be anything. Also guess what I got over it. I understand. That could be a real issue. I WANNA help you. But that's not the leader in your life's ultimate role. The leader in your life's role is to mentor. You to the maximum success that you could possibly achieve and you have to show some mental fortitude. You gotTA show some gumption. You've gotTA show that you're the kind of person who can pick yourself up by your bootstraps and be a self starter starter. And doesn't need to be coddled all the way to success when you act like they should be your shrink that you should be laying on a couch and you know sharing your you know bad dreams with them. They're going to go. This is not really my job. I love this person care about them but they need to mature a little bit before. I'm going to be able to invest a ton of time and the leader is going to checkout. I'm just telling you harsh is that. Maybe it's a real thing so if you want them to check out on you know problem be that person. If you don't want them to check out on you go have somebody else. Provide that role in your life. Your pastor you know.
"scott" Discussed on Scott Ross Leadership
"Take ownership of your situation. Take ownership of your situation you know. There's there's two types of thinking there's ownership or leadership thinking and then there's the victim thinking and as the leader we have to be people who own it rather than people who act like victims the biggest difference between the leaders in the world and the winners in the world and the followers. Everybody else is the leader's own stuff and the victims are. The followers are victims. It's always something else so let me give you some contrast you can ride down. Owners live independent of circumstances. They are outside their circumstances. Their circumstances play no factor in their happiness in their ability to move forward in their attitude in their choices. Owners live independent of circumstances while victims need circumstances to make them happy so owners live independent of circumstances and victims need circumstances to make them happy so if the circumstances are going great. They're happy circumstances aren't going great unhappy. Next owners live by choice while victims live against their will see owners are driving the car. They're driving the ship. They're making decisions. They're choosing what is going to happen next. Where am I going to go next? What is the next set of circumstances? I'm going to create whereas victims are being tossed about like a ping pong ball in the water and whatever is happening. They're just kind of getting swept in that direction or the other against their will owners get from and victims get through owners get from and victims get through. Owners seldom take offence while victims are easily offended. Just ask you. How offended. Are you buy stuff right now? Could you make a list of all the stuff you're offended by if you could probably victim? I'm not offended by much. It takes a lot I get on social media and all I see is people who were offended as all get out their skin is like you know so tiny thin. It's ridiculous. Don't be that person. If you want to be a leader you gotTa have very little. You take offense at owners use life. Where with victims life uses them owners take responsibility whereas victims shift responsibility? It's someone else. It's my boss my spouse my kids my car. My House. My neighborhood the government. Whoever's in office whoever should have been an office the Russians? Whatever somebody else's always responsible owners just take responsibility? Owner see themselves as the programmers while victims see themselves as the program once again owners are in charge of their fate. Victims are just up to the whims of circumstance. Owners see challenges as benefits. They actually embrace challenges as positives whereas victims see challenges as burdens. We're GonNa talk about the benefits you get when you lead through adversity at the end. And you'll see what I mean by this idea of seeing challenges as benefits and then last owners have a higher sense of purpose while victims always diminish the purpose of what they do It's no big deal. I'm not that great is not a? That's not gonNA make any difference. What could I do? I mean I'm only one person. Owners have this higher sense of calling whereas victims diminish the purpose of what they do side note. I'll put the Lincoln to this too but I did a blog post on purpose yesterday and You could read that if you go to Scott Ross. Online dot com slash one fourteen. So going back to this idea of leading through adversity. You are going to take ownership of the situation. Let's talk about to last ideas and they don't want to give you some of the some of the big wins. If you're willing to do this and I apologize. This is going to be a little bit of a longer episode. Just because I wanted to pack all this didn't want to split it into two and it's just a little longer than the typical half hour that we spend together. So hopefully you'll stay with me for just a few more minutes but when you're going through adversity as a leader you want to commit to increased personal communication. What do I mean by that? Well you're going to need over communicate with your people and if you're a task oriented person like me. This is especially a big alert because task oriented. People live in their head. What I mean by that is and I'll just tell you how I operate. And it's just it's been proven this is the way most task oriented people. Are you know I will see a situation and immediately? My mind is calculating all the ways we're going to get through it and I started to go. Oh that's mobile. Oh that's cool. Ooh That's going to be an opportunity right there. Oh Wow we could actually pull this and this and this off and get confident and I just immediately leapt to action. I just started doing. But meanwhile no one knows what just happened in my head. Now I think they know because I know but how would they know when I didn't communicate so we have to do is we have to remind ourselves to over communicate. We have to tell people what it is that we're seeing. We have to tell people why we are excited. We have to tell people the Opportunity. That's before us and the exact st set of steps that we are going to take and we believe we can pull off in order to get to the other side in the in a better place. The other thing we need to do in terms of increasing our personal communication is personally reach out to our lieutenants and make sure that they're all doing okay. You know they might have a brave front in the group when you're sitting in the team meeting everything's going well but you need to reach out to them personally. Say Hey you know. I appreciate your leadership. We're all putting up a brave front but I just want to check in with you how you really doing. What's really going on with you and just get the real scoop. Are they scared? Are they frustrated or are they angry? What's really going on? You need to reach out personally to take their pulse and then you can do some things inner personally with them to reestablish that confidence and communicate with them what you see and let them borrow some of your vision. Let them borrow some of your problem solving. Let them take some ownership of this vision. You have and become a part of it with you. So that they can enjoy this process during this this season of darkness and adversity and that leads to the last thing about or increase personal communication and that is to show people their personal role in their personal win that go back and listen to the episode. We did last time on inspiring high performance. We talked about people needing to see the worthiness of their work to see how what they do. Their personal role how it plays into and is critical to the success of the overall organization and the success of the bigger picture will this is. That's especially true in seasons of adversity. You GotTa make sure that people see how what they're going to do in this season is going to be absolutely critical to the entire organization pulling out and coming out of the other side last technique and this is so critical guys as leaders. We're often as we should be focused on serving our people and we're focused on external things but more than ever during seasons of adversity. You have got to be ensuring that you're filling up your own tank as a leader if you run empty. It's over. Your people are GonNa be empty so you gotTa make sure you're controlling what you can control from building up your personal tank so your morning routine you know. Are You doing prayer? Are you working out and exercising so that you're blowing off stress and making sure that you've got high levels of energy inability to have high levels of output? Are you doing exercise where you're doing like gratitude exercises where you're remembering all the things you have to be grateful for and why this is really just a blip on the radar when it compares to all the reasons you have to be filled with Thanksgiving? You've got to control your energy write. This down. Energy equals performance. The people who bring the most energy to a situation always perform at the highest level. And you've got to control that you've got to be thinking about your energy levels and thinking about your body language and you know because Motion creates emotion. Your physical body and the way you carry.
