I'm afraid I fell in love with Alice in Wonderland Lewis Carroll for the same reason. You're Alice did. It helped me to escape from life. Life didn't strike me as being very interesting now. Nonsense invention imagination. Those were what I went for. I was more likely to read Charles. Dickens during the great expectations period more than the later Bleak House. I was more likely to read. Aristotle phillies than Sophocles. I loved the nonsense of invention and all of my life until very recently reading was helping me pursue my desire to escape Lewis. Carroll was another not trying to escape from life. Who's most exciting moments had to do with a certain golden afternoon in which he was rowing alison her sister in a row boat on the Oxford River. The marvellous thing when you tell me about falling and earning ancient Greece in that extraordinary bed your turn twice a day right now. It's It means to penetrate whereas Lewis Carroll is a man of the surface. He May let Alice Fall. Down a Hole. That hole is anything but sexual. She grabs jaws of Marmalade facing in the in that. Battle we play with string and so that was what I wanted. I didn't know that I'd get to grow up and be a bookworm. I mean it's a great privilege. "And all of the snark like creatures of Carol Phil and it thrilled me to learn how to do symbolic logic and solve syllogisms by Lewis Carroll. Your Alice is a much more impassioned. A woman on the verge of the breakdown of becoming older wiser stranger to her own knowledge of herself. Yeah you're writing the psychological exploration with the other side of me the other author who means so much to me as I and that idea of being. I'm not even saying this book is Christian but it it isn't but it the idea of being in someone's mind in a time of this crisis that could go into the brooding feelings of the suffer me. The show was always about. How do you leave childhood behind? Well it's very interesting because she's in love with a boy she met at he has often. They've been together as best friends and as readers of Allison Wonderland. They've been together in Wonderland. Which in this book is childhood. She because he's always about to leave to broke. You owes us. She has identified him with the White Rabbit. He's always late he's always complaining about his ears and whiskers has no time. No time is dying. He's trying to get her to wake up and recognize that he's dying delusion. She thinks she can take him to warn their land. And he'll him and what in fact happens? The familiar wonderland rituals become like stages of grief for her. She heals herself is what I'm saying. Ultimately Okay so alice by heart has been a musical justice bring awakening when through draft after draft after draft in San Francisco in Europe. In New York off Broadway on Broadway I think Alison is still in. Its way in the works. It has been on Broadway off Broadway. Down with the book. There is a record. Let's hear the first song because it talks to us about the words we're going to begin in the middle of the song west of words because it mentioned some of the wonderland characters. Let's hear.

"By heart and it is about. It would be like for a young person. Also named down was to read Allison Wonderland during the blitz in London. She has a friend who introduced her to the book. A guy who she was friends with from the age of six who she most attractively met in the Giraffe House in Regent Park and he introduced her to Alice in Wonderland and from that point on all the way up until the dropping of the bombs. They acted out Alice in wonderland when playing together. So this is a young adult novel Alice by heart which is a novel about reading and about reading books that alter your life and your heart and your mind and your language this boy who she was in love with in the way of passion not sex from the age of six now has to burke losses. He is dying and he's down there in the underground station where people are hiding out during the blitz. He's input into seclusion. Red Cross. Nurses are tending to him and two other children. Alice Spencer is She casts them in her mind as the Cheshire cat. There's a Red Cross worker. Who's like the Red Queen? There's a doctor who speaks in Latin diagnosis words and he reminds her of Humpty dumpty and his analysis of Jabra walkie so she's living underground the way Alice did in the first version. Lewis Carroll was probably my first love and Steven. Sater was led to this book by producer. I believe because having written about teenage passion in Spring Awakening and having revolutionised certain kinds of musical theater. It was suggested that he like many others. Take on the opportunity to do something theatrical with our yes. These adaptations will get one aspect of Alice. But as for being adaptations of Alice in Wonderland and through the looking glass they fail. My Guest Steven. Sater has not attempted that. This is an experience of a girl who has experienced homeless. Who's been marked by hours? And now she is in the blitz during World War. Two trying to escape back to wonderland when it was first proposed to me to adapt allison wonderland. I thought it was such a terrible idea for the because the book is such a series of almost hallucinatory encounters these visitation these phantasmagoric visitations. Let's say on the cipher like British young British woman. She has no real character. She has nowhere Arcturus no objective and I had spent eight years adapting spring awakening. Which is you know. The first great German expressionist play and learning by introducing songs. How we WANNA go on journeys with these characters that the songs take us into their hearts and minds spring awakening by the Great Franz Vehicle and author of the Lulu play which turned into a fantastic opera person. Who did vote trick? Um It's part of the history of German literature theatrical literature at its most bizarre perverse intense. What led you to say okay. I'll do alice when you might have gone onto Lulu. I have often thought of going onto Lulu and I love Alban Berg's I love that opera so much that I tread lightly around it books meant everything to me and I'm saying this is someone I know who I'm saying this to. I was very ill as a child. I was confined to bed. I was confined to my room. Books really were my world. They marked my life and I just thought what an opportunity to create a show about what literature can mean in this dark time in our nation. I think we have to reaffirm the power of the imagination and try and reignite wonder in ourselves That was the spirit within which I took on the show which became an eight year journey of its own for five years into that journey. The producer said to me. What if you created a book to China that is terrible idea? I'm not gonNA write a tie in book. And he said you know but like a book of pictures and the moment he said it. I just thought of you know what is use of a book with Pictures Conversations. He and I began to think of a book in conversation with all these other books that I'd love this histories centuries of British literature that met so much to me that classics that I met so much man what a book made what a book can contain of Culture Lewis Carroll who wrote Alice in Wonderland Name Lewis Carroll whose name. He was a math teacher and rector. I think Reverend His name was trawls lot would because he had a starter this dude and he would say Dodo Dodge. His students called him Dodo. And there's a Dodo. Allison Wonderland down in the underworld bought by accident. Because he was telling stories he liked young girls. He liked to photograph them. There are people who have their suspicions but he seems to have been entirely innocent but if people have a different way of thinking about it that is also a possibility but there is a Dodo and there are the characters of Alice who are now down in the underground and the Tube station during the blitz. And they're being classified by our Alice. Who is not just a reader? She's a memorizer. Y'All she knows Allison Wonderland and the truth is that Allison Wonderland is magical accident. There are chess games and puzzles in it. There are anagrams and there are a word games. Their a word puzzles in fact. It's a huge accident. Allison Wonderland is the book in English Literature. That anticipates James. Joyce in some ways. The first book that relate Martin changed my life. This is an as an older young man was was ulysses. I was at Washington University. I was studying with gas was like a mentor to me at that time me. Mcguinness was a philosopher novelist as well yeah one of the best literary. Sas We have the author of what I think is the greatest book to have ever been published in my time the tunnel and books of essays on Literature Short Stories. I mean he's he's God he only died a couple of years ago and we live in morning yes but he was my teacher. Yes and he We really hit it off in a profound way. Way I'm guessing I and I had a nice dead classics with him. I studied philosophy with him but he was also the person who introduced me to Boras. He was the person that introduced me to Cortazar. You know and Rocca But I in the middle of my Leno at the end of my sophomore year I was trapped in a fire. I was on fire. I had to jump a third story balcony to escape and prior to that I had spent the entire semesters studying ulysses and had written a version of ulysses you know what I thought was twenty years. I was in one thousand nine at the time. I thought I had the Hubris but I thought I could take. What choice did to the Odyssey and I could do that to ulysses and write the story about my professor and me. Wow and I wrote this work in twenty four chapters and I. It was my sumer and it. It burned up in the fire and burned nearly burned. You Hunt to Jim. I had to a newly per shattered. Fractured like twenty vertebrae and I was broken and burned and I was laid up on the striker frame which is like an earning board was turned every two hours and I had a page Turner I could turn with my teeth and I. I have to write something that can last and I began teaching and I used to talk. You talked to me before the show about your phone conversations with with bill he called me he would call me in the hospital and I began teaching myself ancient. Greek and I learned integrate without would I never studied at him? I never learned the form of of choruses the chorus Greek tragedy. There would be no spring awakening because it opened up to me whole possibilities of how songs can function and dramas ulysses has meant so much to me. I brought it to this today. Because it's so momentous to me to be meeting you think your. Alice is the Alice of a girl on the verge of maturing and she's experiencing like the characters in spring awakening a biological change. That wasn't the world of Lewis Carroll. I don't think he understood biological change. I think he understood that God could lead you pass sense into nonsense and then deeper into nonsense and so. I started to buy as a kid. His logic books because there were syllogisms a series of statements that are designed to help you draw conclusions but thereby goal was carol so they have to do with sun dolls and Buju rooms.
King Midas and the Satyr's Song
"King Midas and the Sater's song. Once upon a time in ancient Greece King Midas was bored. You'll may remember King Midas as the man who wished for a golden touch and soon found himself cursed by golden food. He couldn't eat and golden wine. He couldn't drink. You'd think that would have taught him his lesson for good but MIDAS was forever a misguided man misguided and full of agreed so strong he would have stolen the sun from the sky if he thought he could fit it into his his purse without burning his fingers. Baugh there's nothing to do old Midas blustered walking about his throne room. I'm taking a walk. Walk through the Royal Woods. See that no one bothers me. He took off his robe in stocked out the door near his palace. The wilds of Greece were open into him and wild were. This was still the time of Gods and monsters. Were you were as likely to run into a center as you were a horse and any any random apple may contain curse or blessing. So it wasn't much of a surprise when Midas soon came across a seder playing his pipes sater's were rogues but of mostly pleasant kind. They would play their tricks especially on those who didn't respect nature but usually we're content to enjoy themselves selves in the woods from the waist down they looked like goats standing on two legs and from the waist up they looked like men except for the great curving horns warns that adorned their heads. This particular Seder played his pipes. Beautifully spinning a lively rustic tune that soon had MIDAS tapping his does say. Did you enjoy the Song King Midas the Sader said when he had finished minus was surprised that he was recognized for a moment moment but then he realized this later was none other than pan himself God of the wilds and Lord of all sater's finally played aide Pan MIDAS said. What do you call it? Not One is called a lower for MIDAS. The Sader said. I wrote it for you do as I I need help. Man King Midas puffed himself up a bit that pants should need help from him made him feel royal and Regal indeed indeed. Of course my good man Herb Seder or pan he said. What can I do for you? Well L. I've made a wager with Apollo. He said we're supposed to have a musical competition this very afternoon. You Bet your pipes against Apollo the god of Music King Midas said shaking his head. I think you play beautifully but Apollo is music. It comes from him rolls off him like heat from an oven. I don't see how you could win at this pan laughed. Roguishly Shot MIDAS a wink. We'll see it's my job to bring a judge to the competition. He said you come as the judge in declare me the winner. Well this sounds all well and good for you said MIDAS leaning on an old olive tree but why should I do that. We both know Apollo is sure to sound best true true who said Pan but if you declare me the winner I'll split the prize with you. Apollo has wagered a Golden Lyre and a golden draw against my pipes and a bounty of fruit and herbs. Call me the winner and and the Golden Lyre is yours. My Good King Midas now any half clever man would have learned their lesson when they turned their own kid to gold and nearly nearly starved to death trying to eat golden food. But as we know King Midas was not half clever he was maybe a quarter clever on a good day but even that was pushing it so when he thought of Apollo's Golden Lyre all heavy bodied with finely woven strings like rays of Sun. His mouth began to water. His palms began to each his hair began to sway and tickle like grass in the breeze. His brain began to sing into him a simple chance. That went gold Gold Gold Gold Gold Gold Gold Gold I think MIDAS said licking his lips tips that we have a deal. Perfect said Pan slapping the king on the back. I'm supposed to meet Apollo at the river nearby. You're by come now. Let's go win a contest together. They made their way through the woods. It was a gorgeous day with the birds birds singing and the critters of all kinds leaping and rustling about the trees when they came to the river it was even more lovely than before. Because they're air sat apollo he was a tall and golden figure holding the U shaped harp called the Liar sitting on a rock by the river near him. The birds seemed to sing sweeter. The river babbled beautifully and all the myriad harmonies of the natural world seem to come together in a single. Google heartwarming song then King Midas. He called setting down his lawyer and clapping his hands. Even the clap seemed to be a song in itself. I'm glad you've decided to come. Pan I see you have your pipes and Midas you must be here to judge King Midas. It's not a degrading and took a seat on an old log. Your exactly right sir. I wouldn't miss the chance to hear to gods such as yourselves make music. I'm I'm sure it'll be quite the show. So should we take this contest off said pan knocking his pipes free of for against his thigh. Why we got our instruments we gotTA judge? Oh about that said Apollo. I think more judges are better than just one. Wouldn't you say well said Pan looking about nervously. I suppose one could say that good. Well I invited a couple of our friends to be impartial. Judges he said shooting a sly. Look at King Midas come onto the Mola's come now. Texas King Midas gaped as the two judges emerged from the wilds quite literally to Mola's was the spirit of the mountain itself and Ted. This was the grandmother of the fresh rivers that gave Greece life now pan immediately saw that he had been outsmarted. He was the god of nature so the mountain and the rivers were his domain. He couldn't accuse them of being biased against him. If anything they would look on him more favorably than other judges. Hello to Mola's allowed at this. He said it's lovely to see you on this shah. This fine day Tethong said her voice a watery whisper. We look forward to hearing your music. Yes boomed into Mola's with all the might of the mountains play for Rosh pay on what I hear. Your Song Pan nodded and leapt nimbly upon Hannah flat rock by the river using it as a sort of stage. He put his wooden pipes to his lips and began to blow a melody. It was simple a song of the wood and the trees. It's melody was that of a hiker speed and it's notes soared like an early spring breeze by anyone's judgment. It was a beautiful song. And when he finished and laid down his pipes king midas tumultuous tempests and even Apollo had tears standing in. There is beautiful. Wonderful cried King Midas his. His heart soared pan. Could win and it wouldn't even be cheating. The Seder played that beautifully MIDAS turned and looked at Apollo Paulo eyeing his heavy Golden Lyre. The arms were solid and shining the strings like he imagined finely woven rays of sunshine. And soon soon it would be his wonderful tune said tests but we must hear Apollo play. Yes rumbled to Mola's the nature. God has proven his worth. And now it's time for the Golden God to show us. I saw song. Apollo smiled and stood towering over pan and King Midas. He stepped up onto the flat rock. Stage each and then sat cross-legged cradling close his lyre. Here is a simple song for you. He said brushing the golden strings rings and sending out a ripple of music like the warmth of a perfect summer day I hope you like friends When the song was finished they didn't have tears in there is no? They were weeping openly any pan and king midas included. The song had touched them deeply. It was more than natural. It was supernatural. It was more than music. It was a great therman Cord that stretched from the Heavens to Earth and echoed deeply through their souls
Dorian Slams into Bahamas and Menaces Florida
"We begin with the breaking news. This hour hurricane dorian the massive deadly storm is now lashing the florida coast powerful winds whipping onshore conditions are getting worse with each passing hour and it is going to be hours upon hours and hours. This is from moments ago from melbourne beach. Florida mandatory evacuations are underway there. Let's show you the storm from the international space station a stunning picture three hundred miles wide right now winds up to one hundred and forty five miles an our the picture of the storms. I just tweeted by u._s. Astronaut onboard the space station so that is the i of dorian seen from space as that storm is essentially sleet stationary moving so slowly ravaging the bahamas which it has been doing us since it came ashore there as a category five storm thirty hours ago it it is the most powerful storm in known history to hit the bahamas decimating the islands. Thousands of homes and businesses are now gone. An entire island is without power tonight. It is way too early to have any sense of the death toll and to give you an idea of just how high the storm surge was what the united states could be looking. Eh you can see waves nearly reaching the second story of home. <hes> rescue crews are just starting the grim task of searching for signs of life among the piles of debris and it the scenes like this that has officials in florida pleading with people in evacuation zones. Were still there to get out of a team of reporters standing by from florida to the bahamas tonight. I want to begin with miguel marquez who is out front in vero beach florida gal. What are people eating the evacuation warnings yes and no there's most the people along. The coast here have evacuated along the way but this storm has been so slow. It's creeping so slowly towards us. We've had this same wind for most of the day to day that is south here at vero beach. We're on the barrier islands here. The sea has been quite rough about the same. We've gotten on some bands of wins but as you look north you can see it's sort of broken up is not quite as much wind and clouds on that end of it so you do. You have some people who are staying sort of coming here to watch see what's happening. Some people coming here to secure their homes before they get out. Most people say they they are. They are going to get out there waiting to see what's happening here. They're watching very closely. What's happening to the bahamas right now and they're all wondering when will make that right word. Turn will head north and if it doesn't if it wobbles toward shore people are concerned about that authorities saying look if you don't get out tonight by a two a._m. Tonight it will really start to come in <hes> in a very big strength here. If you don't get out before those winds hit forty five hours those those bridges to the mainland we'll be closed and you will have to ride it out here on the barrier islands aaron all right miguel marquez. Thank you very much. I wanna go as as miguel pointing. They're indicating getting down south. Just south of miguel stuart florida where brian todd is at this hour so <hes> brian <hes> you know as we understand it. You know it's sort of sitting there as it moves so slowly. What is happening conditions where you are conditions here. Erin are getting worse like they are. Mcgill is look at the storm surge here at this park in stuart stuart florida. The waves have been smacking up against the seawall here all day long. It has been getting worse and if you can see out here looks like a rain band another one of those outer rain bands is about to come in here. You're at seward. It's been like this all day. You'll get an really hasn't let up as far as the wind. The rain has come and gone with the wind has not let up and we are told that the wind is going to get much worse in the next say twelve hours or so here in stewart what also is a concern as you've got the confluence of three large bodies of water that have all been you know had the storm surge been bolstering them <hes> since i guess sunday <hes> where was in the bahamas that storm surge i has been affecting the atlantic ocean over here the indian river lagoon here and the saint louis river right over here. This is a confluence of those three bodies of water all of which have seen the storm surge really get stronger and that makes the flooding here the flooding danger here much worse in addition. We can tell you that right behind us. Here are barrier islands hutchinson island in jupiter island about thirty thousand. The people combined live on those islands. Some of them have gotten out there under mandatory evacuation orders but as you know even under mandatory evacuation they people cannot be forced from their homes. They are concerned though that the people who did not get off these islands are not going to be able to get help once the storm starts. They believe that they're not going to be able to get first responders to them. The bridges are going to be closed. Ridge is going to be too dangerous for first responders to pass over them and they're worried that people here in these barrier islands are going to get cut off for at least a couple of days erin all right brian todd. Thank you very much and let's get the latest now on doors path. Tom sater meteorologist is tracking the storm. So <hes> tom you know is <hes>. You know. You hear people saying well. Let's let's wait. Is it gonna wobble. Is it gonna turn. What is the forecast right now well. We're still hopeful that it's going to start to make that job to the north now and stay offshore but the the door is not closed on that yet the sun is setting and you can see it here in the visual imagery another harrowing night for those in the bahamas about seventy thousand of this northern islands three hundred hundred sixty thousand overall but they're without power communications probably without roofs we've heard of total decimation of homes and the inundation of heavy water and they're going to have a long night tonight it. It is stationary. It's not even moving one mile per hour now. We cover a lot of hurricanes and the c._n._n. Weather center typhoons and super typhoons of the pacific cyclones in the in the indian ocean. I've never seen one put on the brakes like this. Keep its power after traveling aaron. Seventeen hundred miles form barbados through is wobbling a little bit overnight last night. It went through what we call an eye wall replacement cycle. It can't sustain this energy so the eye wall opens up another band and then it contracts syndicates energy back but every time it does that those strong winds extend outward so the storm actually gets broader in its strength you you can see already some rain in the carolinas into florida. We've had some waterspouts. I wouldn't be surprised to see a tornado watch tonight or tomorrow for the eastern half of florida but but even when you get in freeport i mean this is only thirty two miles to the northeast of them. They have been getting a beating but they struck the strongest winds near the i. Maybe just away from them. I'm sure this has changed the coastline in the shape of it right now but what we're watching now of course the warnings have been extended north. Just south of jacksonville now watches her into the carolinas but coming up the second part of this show. I want to talk about the steering currents and what this means every ten fifteen twenty miles is critical. We we need to get that. Turn to the north and i think we may have something that's going to help us out and share it with you in just a little bit all right. Thank you very much. Tom is going to be back with us as we watch this and tom in a few minutes i wanna talk about four pierce one of the city's about to feel the impact a door and when you talk about these wide bands tom linda hudson you see her there the mayor of fort pierce here's joins me now. Live maher. I appreciate your time <hes> obviously the storm dangerously close to florida and so enormous that you have these impacts but so slow that you have some people saying well. I just wanna get a better sense of things. What is your biggest concern right now. Mayor i am concerned that people will not take it seriously we still even though it looks better for us. It's still going to be a serious effect on this area. The winds are going to be high and the storm surge is going to be high and we're concerned about flooding so and we're also wanting people to stay in their homes and not leave their homes until all the all clear so you know obviously you're going to have hurricane-force winds as you as you talk about the storm surge itself could be it could be incredibly deadly <hes>. Are you prepared right right now. Yes we are prepared and i will tell you that we've had lots of time to prepare. How many days have we had to prepare pair. So we feel really good about what we done and <hes> we're experienced at this and i know you can't prepare for every eventuality -ality but <hes> we have a great team that has had experience with matthew and experience with irma and we coordinate well within this county and and we've done the best we can with what we have and we're we're prepared so when darrow people you know who have not evacuated and we are you you know across florida where they're gonna be. Bridges are going to be closing down right. People are going to be stock and they could be stuck for days and if the storm <hes> you know you have a stationary storm like what's happening the bahamas it could be incredibly incredibly deadly <hes> for a loss of life. What is your message to people who have not yet heeded evacuation warnings so they shelter in place ace. They've made that choice and most of them should know the dangers. The dangerous are <hes> when the winds get above forty five miles per hour first responders cannot come and rescue them and so that message is always clear and <hes> we have seven hundred people in shelters right now who heated that message and in a vacuum but couldn't leave but a lot of people left a lot of people left friday saturday and sunday so <hes> the ones that are sheltering in place they know the risk a- and <hes> we're we're all in this together all right. Thank you very much more
As Dorian looms, Florida's Space Coast braces for possible unprecedented impact
"Trump has cancelled his trip to poland because of the threat posed by hurricane dorian. The storm is now on track to hit florida as a major category for after sideswiping puerto rico and damaging parts of the u._s. Virgin islands floridians are scrambling to get ready lines snake snake around gas stations and stores in south florida. Let's go to c. n. N. meteorologist. Tom sater tom how much the florida coast could get hit well. It could be the whole coast. I mean really dan. It could be the carolinas. It could be the keys into the golf. I mean this has been a fickle storm. You ask about five days ago if we would be talking about a category category four meteorologists say no way but it's where we are this is the acorn that will become the great oak tree and if you look at the cone of uncertainty it's all a florida and it extends into the gulf so please do not believe that when you see the track moving and the hitting one location that that's where this is going to hit. I mean winds right now. Eighty eighty five. I wouldn't be surprised this gets up to one hundred and fifty hundred and fifty five by the time it gets closer to the u._s. And dorian is as you're showing their over wide open warm water. Could it get even stronger because of that before making landfall absolutely in fact <hes> not a big surprise from yesterday but one of the changes was when you looked at the track we had it at a category to which should be later today that category three three and three at landfall not a surprise to see it. Go up to a category four and mainly the reason as it's got open open space. The smallest storm is gonna get larger but you go from temperatures in the water in the mid eighties to the upper eighties and that's at gulfstream so easily you can have a just an eruption of st right and and real quick any chance for good news here that dorian could weekend or make a sharp turn and go into the ocean the european model here in yellow. This is the u._s. Model really slowed things down today a little bit of a surprise anytime these storms slowdown. It's anybody's guess. The american model has just south of cape canaveral in fort pierce and here's a european down by nassau bahamas this changing constantly even within the same model so again. We've got to watch this each and every hour we've got several days a lot's lot's gonna change. Most likely that was models. Look a whole lot better for the state of florida. Tom sater thank you so much for

"Why would we pay basically the trump tax. Why would we pay him for his name. We could just take a marriott hotel or a sheraton and pay a lot less why somebody going to buy apartment in moscow from donald trump. Nobody knows i'm here. It dawned on me that hey now. They know him. Now like you get this deal done that. I tried to do in the past so that's when when i reached out to <hes> michael cohen and said you know i could get a trump tower moscow deal done. I had a developer who was a friend of mine ready to go. We didn't have the land. We didn't have the psychiatric but those were small details. When you're thinking big start there and fill in the blanks and <hes> he was running for president and i knew they were interested posted in him winning. I was interested in building a trump moscow. Let's face it him becoming president of the united states and me being i'm torn apart for three years and my whole life being torn upside down or me making fifty to one hundred million dollars on trump tower moscow. What are you betting my motivation was and did you. You didn't actually think he was going to become president. Did you did you could you did yeah okay okay so you go back in time at that time. You had president barack obama getting on t._v. And laughing saying he's never going to become president. Every reporter was laughing at it. I'm sitting sitting they go. We can make some money so don't put it on me. What were you thinking. What was everybody else thinking to me. It looked like an opportunity to get a real. Stay deal done then. I got i'm bishops. I said you know what let's make it the tallest building in europe a couple of drinks later. I'm thinking let's make it the tallest building in the world so it was a few hubris well. No i actually want to build a tolls building in europe. I was actually involved in the in the development. I was on the board of directors at miramax and we actually built in moscow the tallest building in europe. It was called federation tower. It was subsequently replaced by taller building but i was involved in the construction shen and the development of the tallest building in europe once and i didn't see any reason why couldn't do it again. Okay two questions come to my mind as i hear you tell this story story. One is you've been at this point by two thousand fifteen exposed in the press. The new york times has done a front page story about your criminal past pointing out your connections to trump suggesting that there's something unsavory rian trump's relationship with you and trump's response is to essentially disown you in a two thousand thirteen affidavit in a lawsuit. He says if seder seder were sitting in the room right now. I really wouldn't know what he looked like in two thousand fifteen when he's called by the associated press says felix sater's boy. I have to even think about it. I'm not familiar with him now. You had an office two doors down from donald trump. You did business with him. You were photographed with him. You were with him. Meta opening of trump soho and you were with him in denver. I believe and people saw you together. People saw you talking. Why would you want to do do business with donald trump after he had dissed you like this because michael isikoff wasn't going to help me develop the tallest building in europe. Make fifty to one hundred million dollars or you didn't ask i. I'm asking now. We can do the tower. You know. Look look. I was doing business. Why would i want to do anything. I don't care what anybody says. Five paid attention to what everybody says think of the stuff that they wrote about me which was modestly negative and mostly designed specifically to be negative because of donald trump. I mean what am i supposed to do hate every reporter who writes a bullshit story about me. Get insulted..

I've been looking for a while. I've been traveling abroad internationally for about almost two years these that i want you to come work with me and that's how i became his senior adviser which was in two thousand ten and then i had an office three doors down from him. It was him rona jason and my office on the twenty fourth floor. He was on the twenty sixth floor but i believe it was before that you accompanied ivanka and don jr. to moscow. Yes that was. I don't remember <unk>. Oh six oh seven. I don't remember when did how did that. Come about donald asked me president said look. My kids are gonna moscow. Would you mind going with them and i'd be i'd feel a lot safer. Fewer there. I said sure was this when they began scoping out trump tower moscow nah they were talking about trump tower moscow since the nineties or even earlier since the doing on that trip yeah yes yes we were looking for. You know yeah well. The answer is yes and yes because you also meet people and other business opportunities could come up but the predominant purpose of the trip was definitely find a site light for trump osco right and you also happen to escort ivanka into vladimir putin's office. If i recall correctly yes aw that's a bit of work but i got done. She actually wanted to sit in his inst- she actually wanted to sit in his chair and i asked the the guy who was with us on the tour because i took a privately in there wasn't part of general admission and we were met by the curator of the kremlin and one of putin's equivalent of secret service or something the guys that protect them and translator and we had a gigantic tour all through the kremlin and as we he pass when we finished and the curators finish telling us how in this room this treaty was signed in this room. This guy was coronated in this room. This queen did whatever she did. Did as we're already leaving we're going through a car door with offices but you're pretty grand and the guy says this is the boss's office and i said let's see it. He says he's not there. I said so watch open the door and he did and he opened the door. He held it. We looked inside and vodka says. Do you think i could sit in his chair and i asked him. The guy looked at me and said. Are you out of your mind. I said what is she going to do. Steal a pen. She's the daughter of an important american businessman. You know who sent us here. Let her sit in the chair. You're right here. What's what's going to do so he said all right and she sat in a chair spin around twice you know she was giddy like a schoolgirl afterwards and that was it okay. Let's talk about how you get entangled later in the muller probe in two thousand fifteen you right <hes> as somewhat what notorious email that helped fuel the narrative that trump was a <hes> an asset of the russians if not wholly wholly-owned subsidiary of the of the kremlin and i'm gonna read the candidate okay. So what were you thinking when you wrote that and how do those words look to you right now stupid. How did why did i write it. "I've got a young daughter who was born. My firstborn probably haven't paid rent in three months on remember the details of one of my financial issues then and my attorney who needs to file the appeal so that i don't go back to jail says it's one hundred thousand for the appeal you know as a felon in this country. You can't even get a job at mcdonalds plus. I was angry because i felt that it was unfair. That i went to jail over a bar fight where the victim wanted to drop the charges charges no matter what you say no matter what his injuries were he wanted fifty grand and to drop the charges feel free to call him and ask him and he'll tell you that that's the truth the d._a. Wouldn't let them so. I was angry and i needed money and that's how i got involved in the stock fraud but for many years i was working as a very legitimate stockbroker. Let's discuss us the stock fraud because it's it is laid out in the five k. letter because they do want to spell out the crimes that you committed with some pretty the unsavory characters a bunch of mobsters with ties to all the major cosa nostra families in new york at the time. How did you get involved with them. Well the thing is they were very much a fixture on wall street in the shady part of wall street read which i was never a part of until right after the bar fight until going to jail and i started a firm with three other friends and partners and when you're doing criminal stuff the criminals show up because all of the guys that were working there were either from brooklyn and staten island and your brooklyn kid kid right you know everyone's got a friend so any argument about anything as oh. I'm gonna go to my uncle or i'm going to my guy or whatever and eventually they try to show open external cue so the idea that they were any kind of masterminds they weren't they were muscle. Anytime there was an argument whoever whether it was somebody shorting the stock or are fighting or to brokers fighting over a book or whatever it was they would wind up. You know some guy in brooklyn with valid the end of his name wanted to have a conversation conversation and those conversations always and badly unless you have somebody of a similar stature to protect you and my grew up in brooklyn new all those guys so that's how they came into the picture but it was certainly wasn't affirm that they were a part of we gave them some money and some i._p._o. Profits to keep deep the other wolves at bay. That was the involvement of the mob. It's been described as a pump and dump scheme. Just explain that in plain in english what you were doing well. We were taking companies public. We would buy the stock very cheaply. I in a private placement was very elaborate. We would buy in offshore company names. We'd pay ten cents for the warrants. We take the company public at five dollars a share we would pump the stock to ten dollars but our warrants which were exercisable.

If these guys could i can do it effectively dropped out like a week later and went to wall street fulltime <hes> and a key part of your origin story is a bar in a restaurant. I guess a mexican restaurant tex in tex mex acts in the thirty s in manhattan. Well let me say this. You know the history that is printed is always stock fraud case. I went to wall street and worked for many years in the most legitimate firms. The only reason that that came around is because of what you're mentioning now. I was a stockbroker working at very legitimate firms arms very successful went to a it was a bar. There was our regular bar because our office was at six o five third avenue which is i think fortieth street and this is l. Rio grande on. I think it was thirty eight th street so it was literally the place that we had lunch. Dinner drinks everything so there apparently is still alert. I haven't been back in a while. I was there. We were there to celebrate. One of the guys getting has broker's license a lot of drinking and there was a guy at the bar and i was at the bar and we were drunk and we got into a bar fight. It was just two guys full of piss and vinegar masters of the universe because he was also a he was a commodities. He's trader fire member or a currency trader here was this is this is ninety-one so i had already been working on wall street four six seven years and it was over woman if i want. I don't even know if you could say over a woman because neither he knew her. I knew her but there was a woman. Alcohol and a woman always an alcoholic the woman straight out of tom wolfe so we get into a bar fight and you know he's a little earlier than i am knocked down a few times. I kept getting up. I guess i'm just too stupid. Stay down and you know. I saw him going for beer bottle and i grabbed a margarita glass. I did not break it. I it was one motion. He was going for beer bottle title. I went for the first thing i could grab. I hit him. I my life's trajectory changed completely. I was subsequently the next day a that was taken to the hospital first of all but i was arrested and eventually i wasn't smart enough to figure out what to deal with it because i didn't think a bar fight and everyone likes to make it sound like there was something horrible. Wasn't that horrible 'cause. He tried to drop the charges. All he wanted was fifty thousand thousand dollars from me pain and suffering which i gladly did have one hundred ten stitches. I've lost a fifty grand. I paid him but he didn't want to press charges the d._a. Wouldn't let him because the d._a. Wanted to put pressure on my dad and subsequently explain that which part art by with the d._a. Dash around your dad they they. I don't know you'd have to ask them. They wanted to and eventually i went to trial which was a mistake lost at trial and i was sent to jail and i was sent to jail rikers rikers island yeah that was that was a classic spent about three months in rikers and and then i hired a new attorney who got me out on appeal bond so now i'm out of jail three months but i still have a sentence hanging over me pending ending the appeal. I've got no money..
Kosher Giants Merge, Creating Possible Matzoh Monopoly
"<music> <music> ah from wonder i'm david brown and this is business worse daily on this tuesday august twentieth. The two biggest companies in the kosher food business are merging the tie up between giants keiko and manischewitz will mean the merged company will hold slightly more than fifty percents of america's twenty four billion dollar kosher market that could create a monopoly for an assesses like fell to fish in monson prompting a writer here at the daily news blog. The hustle to ask is a kosher monopoly kosher. Many shepardson keiko were icons in the jewish community both got their starts more than a century ago. The rabbi bear manischewitz founded his company in cincinnati in eighteen eighty eight to make macho the unleavened bread that jews eat during passover. The lithuanian-american rabbi was an innovator he took what had traditionally been around handmade bread and began making with machines and square both changes inches that kosher traditionalist at first resisted but his matsu caught on so too did manischewitz wine a cheap cloying drink that nonetheless this is standard at most passover sater's the company thrived over the years and expanded its offerings to include many other kosher foods from gal to fish to borscht it went public public in nineteen twenty three but was sold to a private equity firm in nineteen ninety manischewitz has changed hands many times since then and sold off pieces of it's kosher empire notably. It's manischewitz wine which the family sold in nineteen eighty seven keiko has both an equally storied history and an ever increasing share of the rapidly growing kosher market ho cost survivor eugene herzog who came to america in nineteen forty-eight began making kosher wine ten years later he drew on his family's family's ancestral winemaking tradition which began in the mid nineteenth century when the family supplied wine to the emperor franz joseph of the austro-hungarian empire like manischewitz cheviots the herzog's built their wine and food empire over the years the company now distributes about one hundred fifty different brands from soups tomato but it could never topple manischewitz position as the preeminent matsu maker it did however win the vast market for kosher grape juice which plays a significant role in orthodox doc families a few years ago manischewitz attempted to break keiko's monolithic hold on the great juice business by pairing with cheaper kosher certified version of welches grape grape juice but it didn't catch on terms of the agreement and manage shiva's motivation for selling were public at the time of production but business has become much more competitive over the years as now more than eight hundred thousand foods from hershey's chocolate to trader. Joe's tuna have have been certified as kosher with many more choices available manischewitz sales have been declining one question is whether kosher prices will increase under the merged company kosher food already costs more than non-kosher items but an expert quoted in the times says no keiko was a family business. He said sensitive sensitive to the market besides mana schevitz likely learned its lesson about overreaching long ago in nineteen ninety one hundred different management the company paid a one million in dollar penalty for manipulating the massive matsu market meeting kosher dairy on new york's lower east side leaders of manischewitz and two other companies notably not keiko had agreed to fix passover matsu prices. Surely that wasn't a step toward sacred seder from wondering this business wars daily. If you like our take his second give it a five star rating in a review on apple podcasts. It is the number one way other listeners buying this affects. I'm david brown back with you tomorrow.

And it went on and on and on. And so you look at now this proposal to. Give vitamin Putin. A fifty million dollar penthouse. That you know, the one hand there's Felix fatal says it's a marketing ploy to entice other guard who to purchase the unit within the tower. It also appears to be a way in which to get him to sign off on it. And obviously the conversation has since evolved into. Did that constitute a bribe that violation under the Foreign Corrupt Practices act? That was not the, you know, we didn't look at that area for our story. But at this point, that's where it's sort of a ball to and and you know, and the thing about tower this tower Moscow project is that even in these text messages, Michael Cohen is an Felix sater's when they're going back and forth about about what what what the next step should be Michael at one point lashes out at feel saying you're not gonna make me look bad in front of Mr. T refers Donald Trump when he asked me about it. So it became very clear in our reporting early on and even more. So now that the Donald Trump was gonna no I mean, he was very much well aware that that project was was happening that they were moving forward on it that Michael Konno's move forward on it. So this is not something that he was kept in the dark about. And there were just a few. Meetings, which is how Michael Cohen shark rise in. This was something where we're we're Donald Trump was well aware, right? And the thing is he had Donald Trump had been claiming all along I have no dealings in Russia. I have no lungs in Russia. No projects in Russia. Nothing in Russia. Got nothing to do with Russia. Even though he had been trying to get into Moscow for years and years and years. So he had he had claimed he had nothing to do with Russia and Michael Cohen had been working on this. Now that the I guess the the the the the. People thought that he had stopped the negotiations before he actually took off on his candidacy before the the campaign took all, but but what you discovered is. That is actually went on well into the summer until after some of the debates had been held, and in fact in one of the the text exchanges that you had between Michael Cohen Felix Sater staters is talking to Cohen think about coming to Moscow. And he said, you know, I come now. But Donald basically was saying Donald Trump can go after the convention. Do I have that? Right. Correct. Yeah. That's right. And we posted. Some of the text messages our latest that we have early of the year, and that's an exchange at happened in bay. So Michael Cohen has long maintained that even testified to this. Which is what ultimately he pleaded guilty to in terms of lying to congress. He testified that his discussions about, you know, Trump Howard Baucau ended around January that it just fell through the deal. Never the the letter of intent that was actually fine in October. Right. It's a sort of ended. Now, what's really interesting about them? These these heavily. The letter. The letter of intent was signed in October of twenty sixteen. Fifteen twenty fifteen. Okay. There you go. Right. And it went on through the summer sixteen. Okay. Correct. So so his discussions with Felix sater's who was kind of into shadows regarding this this deal feel had a lot of contacts in Russia. A lot of. He knew a lot of the white people. You had the connections to perhaps get this in front of Putin or banks to get financing. So he wasn't important figure all this. But Michael Cohen made it very clear that that he was it was his project. It was mine my McComb project. Right. And that his communications with Bill fater. You know, win through January the end of January. What happened afterwards, which is what we reported earlier the year their communications about Trump Tower Moscow, then fell off the. Well, we also know that the two Trump organization guys who themselves specifically, we're the ones working on Trump Tower. Moscow Felix sater's and Michael Cohen. They ended up themselves. The two of them involved in one more scheme right before Mike Flynn was fired right at the start of the Trump administration. They were involved in a scheme to cook up yet another plan to get rid of Russian sanctions. Remember, the story field Sater and Michael Cohen involved in these supposed secret Ukrainian peace deal scheme, which was really just a proposal to give you crane over to Russia and then dropped the Russian sanctions. Anyway, what were Felix Sater Michael Cohen doing working on something like that do Felix sater's and Michael Cohen scream international diplomacy and peacemaking to you those guys those guys wouldn't even say that about themselves. And that couldn't happen until US sanctions on Russia were dropped some of the real estate guys start working on dropping sanctions in Russia because it's part of their deal. Because sanctions and a huge financial deal for Trump and lying publicly about the deal for Trump and lying about contacts with the Russian government. It's all one thing. And it may have even all been run by the same guy. Dmitry peskov in the Russian government. And so on Tuesday. Mike Flynn will be in court, and we will learn what Robert Mueller has come to know in his dealings with Mike Flynn since fluid pled guilty to lying to the FBI about sanctions a year ago right before Flynn comes to court. We have finally learned the answer to the biggest mystery about the case against him. Why he bothered to lie about those sanctions discussions in the first place. It wouldn't have needed to be surreptitious if it was just about sanctions alone. But Mike Flynn and his deputy KT McFarland and the president himself. We now know they were all compromised by Russia at the time because of what they were lying about that Russia knew the truth about what Russia knew the truth about what turns out to be a fairly simple plant compromised the candidate with promises of a secret deal install the.

"This thing is still playing out. Yes, it's going deep into June and close to the Republican convention in fact, Felix sater's and Michael discuss with Michael Cohen when he should expect Donald Trump to go to to go to Russia to perhaps discuss this. And when Michael intended to go and that discussion took place in June. Michael said beef actually in may of two thousand sixteen Michael said. Me first before Cleveland, and then after the convention, Donald Trump, so. These discussions were taking place deep into the campaign. And which is what we reported earlier this air. All right. Yes. Exactly. All that. You guys nailed this again as I said just tip the cap. So here's here's my question. Why it ends up getting cancelled June fourteenth is a key date in in the criminal information. I want to show you at Felix sater's said to me when I asked him why it fell through and what we actually know about the reason take a listen. Why does the deal fall through in Moscow because the Trump organization announced that they were not going to do any more international deals? That's not true. They dropped the deal in June fourteenth before they make any kind of announcement like that. Right. I think that first of all from what we've seen in the text messages. It's a little unclear as to why this these discussions just abruptly ended because they were making plans to go to these the economic forum where they would be discussing this deal in the financing revolving around the deal, then the text messages from what we have that were turned over to the FBI turned over to congressional investigators the just sort of ended, and I think that that is the excuse or the rationale that the Trump organization put out there at the time, but we have not been able to determine exactly why. The talks broke down. Let me just say that my my understanding is Felix sater's on the record tonight to someone basically saying that the publicity from that story on June fourteenth land, saying the Russians hacked, the BNC is what abruptly cuts it. But one could also imagine all the reasons that that spot being blown up might chase people away. Right. And you know, Felix was working directly through Michael in in some of these text messages as we reported he saying that you know, he'll he will kind of be in the shadows on this. And Michael is Michael Cohen is the point person. So what Felix was told was coming directly from obviously from Michael. And he was apparently getting some word from from higher ups in inside of the Trump organization. All right. Jason Leopold who's part of an amazing investigative team over there. Buzzfeed is done. It was a great journalist and has been a great journalist for longtime is doing great work. Thank you very much. Appreciate that. Chris. Thank you. All right today. We learned new details about the Trump family's involvement in the effort to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, according to the charges filed against former Trump fix Michael Kohn by the special counsel today. He Cohen briefed family members of individual one. That's the president within the company about the project in Moscow. Now, that's especially interesting considering what the president's son and top Trump organization official. Donald Trump junior told the Senate intelligence committee in September two thousand seventeen Trump junior said he knew very little about the Trump Tower Moscow deal, and he wasn't involved. Joined now by democratic congressman Eric swallow of California member of the House Judiciary committee and the intelligence committee, which also interview Donald Trump junior and Michael Cohen about Russian context last year. Congressman did they tell you the truth. I don't think they did Chris and we've had this concern for a long time. And I think that Moeller actually could have reached this plead today much earlier had chairman Nunez and the Republicans allowed us to send over to the molar team are transcripts. We have in the basement. Of the capitol pages of lies of Trump campaign. Witnesses and their transcripts. They came to us. And those those witnesses and their transcripts sit in the capital protected by chairman Nunez, and I think that is delaying the molar investigation..
