That sounds a lot better in schizophrenia. I wish they had told me that at the time. What they told me at the time was I have to take medication for the rest of my life. How I Built Resilience: Sandra Oh Lin of KiwiCo

"On these episodes, we talk with entrepreneurs and other business leaders about how they're coping during this very challenging time and today we're gonNA hear from Sandra. Olen, the founder and CEO of Kiko Kiko makes arts and science projects for kids and ships them out in monthly subscription boxes or crates in March when students began learning from home Sandra's company a spike in orders, and it's now shipped over twenty million boxes around the world I spoke with. Sandra from her home. In the bay area is trying to keep up with demand. Tell us a little bit more about Kiwi Co for people who don't know what what you do tell us about your your company. Yeah. So we design and deliver hands on experiences for kids, kids of all ages. So we have different experiences and products that we develop for Newborns and infants alway through to kids at heart. So teens and even grown ups and these hands on experiences they range. So science experiments, games, kids making play projects that encourage imaginative play. And they're all center around this idea of how can we encourage kids to see themselves as makers And I. Think the the best known as the Kiwi crate and inside like you get pipe cleaners and different OV- like Styrofoam balls and I think that's probably the best known product that you guys make. Right the Kiwi crate. Yeah. Yeah. I mean that's our flagship line. So qe crate is geared for early elementary age kids. So five to eight and it's very project base for Kiwi crate. There are at least two different projects and it's usually one that's a science and engineering focused project and one. That's more be more of an art in creativity designed focus project. So let's say one project overall. It's about arcades and one project might be you create a mechanical arcade cloth that you can actually grab things with and the other side of the crate might be a project where you're making your own yarn pom Pom Creatures, and then you're actually taking your claw, you're trying to grab those creatures as well as whatever else is around your house too. So it's a combination of discoveries along with hopefully A. Little Bit of delight and a whole bunch of fun which I love and tell me I i. know that you launched this in twenty eleven and at the time I guess you were like you were in charge of the fashion portfolio. For Ebay. How did the idea come to you? So it was born mainly out of personal needs. So my my career has spanned consumer products and technology mostly ECOMMERCE. So it started my career in India proctor and gamble and then had been at pay pal at. Ebay but when we started the company, so two thousand eleven, my kids, my oldest two kids were almost three and almost five and I really want to give them especially the hands on activities. It was a way for them to really see themselves as producers and not just a passive consumers as kids who could actually kind of problem solve and make something, and so I started to pull together different and inspiration and I was like, Oh, my gosh, is taking a long time like I need to. Amortize. My effort and so I would invite friends and their kids, and one of the MOMS actually said, you should start a business around this and it was one of those things where I think long story short is that we found that there are a lot of parents who are well intentioned very busy. They want enriching activities for their kids and if it can come. To them in a convenient format from a trusted brand, and that's something that actually really resonates and then if you think about it from a business perspective, if you can get a subscription service to work, it works really well right and so if you consider all the elements of subscription service or you're considering lifetime value if you're able to drive down their cost of Acquisition then you're able to provide something that is not only valuable to the customer, but ends up being something that works really well all the business side to I I imagine when the Middlesex business for a moment I mean I imagine that when it became clear that the pandemic was GonNa shut down huge parts of the economy like most business owners you probably. Anticipated a downturn for Your Business and first of all, how did you prepare for that possibility? Well, to be completely frank, it was a little bit of madness say kind of the beginning. So we were a little bit ahead of the curve and having folks work remotely. But then as people started to shelter in place was definitely a scramble you know we had to see. What the impact would be to the business, and so we've definitely became more conservative. So very quickly we decided to basically pull back or remain conservative on marketing spend. We were looking at things like hiring and figuring out what we wanted to do that. So we held on hiring but then we're also tracking the business and what we actually started to see pretty. Quickly is a pretty decent uptick in the business. I think the combination of parents being home needing something to engage kids we happen to be a good solution, and so we started to see an uptick in the business and then accordingly had managed to the business based on that demand at a pretty dramatic to I think, right? Yeah. So I think you had mentioned. I kind of in the beginning that we shipped out over twenty million crates now, and so if you look at the first ten million crates, we hit that Mark Actually in January twenty nineteen, and then in the next eighteen months or so we actually shipped out another ten million crates and you can imagine kind of the celebration of the business and some of that. Is Because of acceleration that we saw on the business given the pandemic and the demand that was their I'm not surprised spoke with the CEO of dream box who told us that they have seen a doubling of on boarding on onto their platform it's a math platform for elementary school kids. I spoke to Sal Khan a few days ago of founder, the Khan Academy. I mean, they're seeing record numbers of students on their platform I mean as you have seen this kind of surge in demand, how have you been able to meet that demand? I mean, for example, have you had any challenges sourcing supplies? Yeah. So we've definitely had different challenges associated with with meeting the demand I. Think the great thing is that our team has been incredibly responsive and making sure that we shoring supply chain putting in the appropriate orders to make sure that we had the inventory available and I think when it's kind of regular times. To a certain extent, it's almost like your utilities or you know you expect the water to be there in the electricity work and similarly expect that you're going to have product to ship, and so we had to be very proactive about making sure that some of these things that we may have taken for granted and pass were there available to us that we could actually serve the community fulfillment was definitely another area that we had to really shore. Up and make sure that we have the capacity and then customer care I. Mean Obviously we WanNa do an excellent job of serving the customer and making sure that their questions are answered etc and so there was a certain amount of capacity that we were planning for in March April Etcetera May June, and so we had actually scaled add up pretty significantly. Let's go to some questions we're getting in from folks watching system cows, Zimmer he asks via twitter. How do you develop your kids and how do you test them with kids? Yeah. So we have interestingly to product design and development teams. So we have a physical product design and development team, and then we have a digital. So the digital is creating ecommerce platform or content platform. So the software and then our physical product design team is really comprised of folks with mechanical engineering backgrounds, industrial design. We have someone who actually worked on space satellite system. This is, and so these are the folks who are accepting the different projects that could to the kids prototyping testing, etc, and a big part of what we've done at Kiko even since you started it in my garage actually is that we are always testing but children. So in every office that we've had, we have a sizable room and four to eight times a week kids are coming in to test the products at various stages and that is. Something that is absolutely critical for us. We may assume that a project may be engaging. It may not. We may assume that a material is something that is malleable enough for preschoolers hands, but it may not be, and so it's just a critical step in. So as we've actually been working remotely, that was a big challenge to figure out, and so it's been pretty amazing. We quickly decided to actually purchase three D. Printers, laser cutters, etc that we. Then distributed to different product designers, and then on the testing side, we ended up actually either shipping or having a hand off locations for kids to pick up and test materials, and then do them via video conference and so we actually ask for different camera angles to see what the kids are doing because depending on the age of the kid it's not so much that they're going to tell you what's going on you actually have to observe. What's going on in? So that's definitely been an area where we've had to figure out how to get things

Is Space Junk Cluttering Up The Final Frontier

"We are tackling a question from listener. Rachel. Weiss space-junk this growing population of manmade objects cluttering up Earth orbit so Does that happen? Okay I. Let's consider what satellites are made out of metal plastic glass powered by batteries or solar panels, and when they're placed in specific orbital highways, they stay there moving. So quickly that they don't fall towards the earth kind of like, you know if you had to put a boat in a body of water, you want to avoid fighting the current kind of thing that's more. But jaw who we met earlier, he says that from sputnik onwards, our satellites have been creating debris shedding spent rocket bodies pieces becoming glued satellites have been known to explode when unspent fuel is on board, and of course, they can cross flightpaths and collide with one another and whenever satellite shed pieces they. Tend to not should one but many many pieces, hundreds of thousands of pieces depending on the type of collision. These collisions rarely destroy the satellites, but they can alter their operation and send pieces jettisoning off into space affected not only by gravity, but other physical forces. So we're pressure thermal radiation charged particle, environment interactions with you know magnetic fields, and all of this makes it very difficult to predict what space junk will do next the little that falls back to Earth, which is one object that day on average burns up or falls into the ocean. So space junk is probably not going to land on your head. Have you calculated that probability because you're GONNA ask me this question I haven't. But there's a scientist mark. Matinee, at NASA orbital debris program who has it's one in several trillion honestly I still like it but okay Mattie the people you should worry about more astronauts right? The International Space Station actually has a tracker to monitor for collision risk and they will maneuver out of the way when the risk is too great. Wow. But I feel like if there was a major collision, I would hurt about it, right? Yeah. There hasn't been a major collision you know the US military NASA and other agencies and groups around the world they tracked debris and Warren of potential collisions but there's been a few scares in recent decades. So in two thousand, fifteen, for example, the crew. On. The International Space Station had to hide in their Sawyer's capsules. Basically, the stations lifeboat when debris from an old Russian weather satellite came dangerously close. I don't like that no spacecraft and satellites will routinely maneuver out of harm's way but only if they have ample warning so the whole spacefaring community was pretty rattled when in two, thousand, seven, the Chinese military destroyed one of their own weather satellites they were testing out anti-satellite. Technology. Brian Weeden, remembers tracking this big explosion for the US air. Force. I personally was sort of shocked. It was of like wow Brian was part of a squadron that counted the resulting debris and in the end ended up cataloging more than three thousand objects. So that one. Got turned into three thousand things and that's just the things we can track wasn't space junk a big part of the movie gravity you are remembering cracks lake. From the missile strike has caused a chain reaction hitting other satellites in creating desgris two thousand eighteen Hollywood movie begins with a chatty George Clooney and Sandra bullock servicing the Hubble space telescope gays, and contentedly back at Earth. When this huge cloud of debris from missile strike grips through communications blackout it's a bad situation happen North America's laws individual. Dramatic portrayal definitely raise the profile of space junk. Even if the portrayal wasn't very accurate I, think navy on the whole it has been a good thing for for the issue. Even, if I might grumble a little bit scientists love to grumble. That's Brian Weeden again he's now the director of program planning for the Secure World Foundation thinks a lot about sustainability in space, and he says that opening scene gravity doesn't capture the true problem over the breath catches him was portrayed as sort of a nuclear chain reaction. Right there's one event that sets off this series of things that will happen very fast. The reality is sort of the opposite where it's it's like climate change. The problem with space junk is it's a long relatively slow accumulation over decades with a big negative impact down the road. Got It. Yeah. So Brian says. The risk of space junk involves convincing people, launching satellites, governments, and companies to change their behavior. Now mindful of the future and maybe have a little inconvenience or a little more cost now to forestall bad things in the future, and that's a really difficult argument to make because we humans just aren't engineered to kind of think like that preach especially when nothing truly catastrophic has happened yet but space junk is already proving to be problematic in the short term, it's translating into real world costs a satellite. Field alerts about potential collisions. Do Do I change my satellites orbit because that costs fuel and that will shorten the lifetime your satellite, which isn't good for the commercials base economy, which is Kinda booming right now. Yeah. We did that episode all about how SPACEX IS GONNA put a bunch of satellites up there. Right you know in the long term space junk has the potential to not only collide with manned spacecraft like the International Space Station, but threatens satellites at all levels of orbit like those used for imaging and whether data collection, which then could mean our climate models are less accurate or we don't have a good way to track the mirrors and that could have negative

"Welcome to medicine. We're still practicing I'm Bill Curtis of course I my friend and Co host Dr Steven Tailback He's the quadruple board certified doctor of Internal Medicine Pulmonary Disease Critical Care and neuro critical care these days he continues to fight on the front lines of the COVID battle in California for which we are eternally grateful Steve How you doing I'm well thank you. It's good to be. I'm sure you've heard of children's Hospital of Los Angeles notice. Hla US News and World Report has consistently ranked the H. L. A. in the top five nationally and the number one pediatric hospital in California for thirty years. Running this remarkable nonprofit children's care hospital is nationally known for Neonatal Research and care that is funded entirely by generous philanthropists. Dr Felipe Friedli is chief of neonatologist at Children's Hospital. He is also co director of the fetal and neonatal? Institute. And he is professor of clinical pediatrics and surgery at the renowned kept school of Medicine at USC where he's published over one hundred, fifty abstracts, Peer Review Articles and book. Chapters Dr. Freedland is a rock star in one of the world's most complicated pressure filled and delicate specialties that include newborn respiratory failures newborn pulmonary hypertension even surgery on unborn babies. Can you imagine welcome Dr Felipe Free Lick? It is an honor to have you here tonight and having me. So doctor. Can you just bring our listeners up to speed on C. H. LA and your mission there? Sharon's HUSK local Sandra's mission is to care for sick children's no matter what their background cultural background or insurance they have we are. Laced to gear for family and children's in babies when there's no other place that could care for them. Are we talking about like one of the few medical specialties that truly couldn't wait for Covid to pause that's a great question fortunately or many children's covid has not been has impactful. They are some babies are insurance that are sick but by four unless we compared to adults we. Are Really lucky so far. So we're not going to spend the whole show on Kovin because frankly I think people wanted to know much more about your specialty, but maybe you could tell us a little about what kind of a regimen as C. H. L. A. Developed uniquely for this pandemic and what are some of the special things that you do at your hospital to manage this. A lot of it has to do with making sure that became screen families in staff when they arrive at the hospital in make sure that they're the environment for caring for the Germans you regardless of the reason why they're in the hospital is is optimal until the hospital has and significant resources to ensure that we screen families and visitors and parents when they arrive psychologically, how do you get your clientele to feel safe under these circumstances that has been Estonia As you can imagine a lot of families or speared to even go close to a hospital. So said, only our data's suggesting that we can provide a safest environment to bring Ren's and care for them, but it is a concern. Certainly, we can see that visit to the emergency room are significantly down obviously a lot of the outpatient clinic. I've had to restructure their environment, but I think that honest conversations with family in trying to make sure that. Children can get the care they need. So they don't have complications from their Biz orders diseases are we tried to do our best to get the message across

Well, it was at phone interview and he had no idea who I was except I was just writing a book on muddy waters but the thing that struck me was that it was like talking with an old friend, he had such warmth and generosity and He was really forthcoming and very interested in my project, and then at the end of the interview, he said you've got to promise me something promised need this promise me that call me back in two weeks. Please because there might be something I've forgotten to say and I might want to add more to the interview. So I did that and he was so friendly again, it was just amazing and of course. As I I didn't know at the time, but he was like that with everybody he just made everyone feel like you were his best friend on that something that I've heard over and over again it was disturbing. Facility he had per putting people at ease and you making them feel welcome in to put it into context for our listeners. What Year did you interview Yvonne via the phone that was nineteen ninety six now ninety six was posed original band and he had done a lot of Solo work and work with other individuals..

"Obstinate and child is suddenly delightful in public. It's hard not to make it about him. It's hard not to be swept away by the fact that his presence has calmed. My little tempest of daughter. The exact way he made me feel when I first met him. Com. On the street. We say goodbye. But birdie won't have any of it. She jumps on the man with the white shirt. Like takes a running jump onto his back screaming. No, don't go. Take me with you. He laughs and hugs her. And doesn't seem uncomfortable at all. We'll hang out again, he promises her as I try to pry her off his body. She's unbelievably strong and will not let go of him her mother's daughter through and through. Is beaming. He's had so much fun. But my insides are a mess can't be monogamous. He doesn't know if he can be in a committed relationship. Ooh. Birdie schotz as we crossed the street. And this is how they meet the man with the white shirt and my birdie. Their relationship becomes so deep so quickly it grows easily into its own thing over the next several years. He teaches her to play the drums. They walk his dog together they build the elaborate LEGO structures. She hugs him. Like hugging is what she does. He picks up from school or watches her on summer days while I'm working they call it camp white shirt. For years. There will be one or two nights a month where I get home from work to find him cooking, dinner birdie happily plays nearby. The are the only nights I look forward to going home, the N -ticipant of the life going on inside the warmth of light and food and other human bodies. Have floods me the second I walk in the door the war. The three of us at the table joking and eating like a family the way they cut each other off trying to tell me funny story. How's she writes out our desert orders on a little notepad, then returns with three pudding cups and three Espresso spoons neatly laid out on a tray. In these moments. I glow watching them listening feeling whole again. But his phone keeps beeping soon he'll be gone out somewhere with someone and birdie, and I will be back to a family of to the warm light slightly dimmed..

"Today, I sit here butterflies swirling around my head, lovey, dovey gooey complicated. Butterflies for the man with the white shirt. Complicated complicated. Butterflies? White shirt is texting me he's on his bike and going to drop by the park. He says. I think hard on this. I don't want birdie to meet any man in my life, unless that man means serious business serious in the traditional sense. He's gotta be my boyfriend and white shirt as we all know is not my boyfriend. He's the not boyfriend. Birdie is six years old at this point. And isn't very physically affectionate. She refuses to be hugged or touched by almost anyone. But her dad, and I even then she manages to worm her way out of our arms and a matter of seconds. It's like she has no use for most people. She's met a lot of my friends, both men and women, and although she's friendly and polite. She doesn't usually pay all that much attention to them. So I figure there's no harm in the man with the white shirt coming by the park to sit with me a bit. She won't even notice. When he arrives at the playground. It's like extra sunlight was ordered in. And the wind machine. And sparkly missed. I can smell every single flower the park. He gets off his bike smiles. And I have to remember to breathe. He hugs me. And I'm super stiff I don't know how to reconcile volcanic eruption in my body with the wholesomeness of this playground. As we sit down birdie who never pays attention to me or anyone in the blade ground. Suddenly comes running over. Hi. She says to the man with the white shirt. She doesn't acknowledge me at all. Do you wanna see, sir? New, sir. New is a tiny eraser in the shape of a white cat. Yeah. I do he says and before I know it they're playing with a racer cats and laughing talking leg. No big deal. It's a big deal to me. My two worlds are colliding. I really thought he just going to drop by for a bit on the. But instead he's deep in storyline creation with birdie. And this is also unexpected here. She is draped over him touching him. Even. Why is she gone back to her friends in the playground isn't going off? White shirt suggests we got some frozen yogurt and birdie is thrilled. I agree. But it's like I do it from a distance. This wasn't supposed to happen. She isn't supposed to love him. So immediately like I did he isn't real his love is only partial it has limits. I need to protect her. But this is all happening. So fast. Walking through the park the three of us. Child who touches no one reaches for his hand. And just like that walking along the path. We look like a family just like that. It's so easy for my heart to be swindled. Frozen yogurt with sprinkles and cookie dough and job jobs, obviously, he loves kids, but has never been a parent. She's laughing with that husky Janice Joplin voice of hers, and it makes everyone in the shop smile. My.

I don't believe that why not your service? The definition of service is the act of helping or doing work for someone for money doesn't talking about your pain help. Maybe. Someone's making money off of this. Like whenever I say feeling depressed, I immediately get a pop up. One of those shredded bamboo body pillows, the picture, this guy pajamas like blissfully asleep with shitting grin on his face. We can't stop if you prefer. No, no, no, it's this is good. It's interesting, but like I'm not gonna get a Bill for five hundred dollars for this therapy session and I know, but you're snuggle. PD adult body pillow will be arriving with anti-business business days. I already have one. Oh, sorry that's not in your purchase history. I didn't buy it. Did Phoebe gave it to you. How many times have to tell you? No, Phoebe. I'm sorry, TED, you really don't want to talk about her at all. Not even for a minute. It's not like I'm going to be able to like.
