"Johnson Jimmy Johnson scores his first win at Darlington. Raceway three-time Darlington winner. Jimmy Johnson remembers the first time watching a race at the track. Too tough to tape. First Race I saw from here was an old Iraq rates before I really watched a cup race and also remember coming here trying to find a job in the nationwide series and watched ten months. Grave had had a sh- I think he won potentially shot at winning. It was really exciting race. He was sixteen. I believe so. It was a long time ago but I just remember coming here and of the track that I watched on television looked exciting and I came in I in and it was so much more than than what television can do for you know divas. An awesome job is just as track is so narrow and so different in. The speeds are so high for such a small racing groove that left an impression on my mind in watching cars run through one in four back then up on the fence was mind boggling to me and then when I had a chance to run Salem Indiana you would run in. Asa Series would run up near the wall in three and four. They're in my mind. I'm like if I ever get the Darlington. This is what it's gotta be like. I'm getting experience for Darlington. Came here and had a didn't win in the nationwide series but struggled a lot. Less than other rookies coming here. And I think that running Salem helped and then also my off-road background in how Abrasive the track was in RAF and different It's one of the things driving on the jury. You have to adjust all the time. Your cars are truck in my and my case is never perfect grip levels always changing and I think that experience helped me come here and get a feel fans place quicker than others. This has been forty eight stories with Jimmy. Johnson we're.

"On this law without getting a haircut? No I have not. I have not although I will tell you. That's a great question. I got one of these two clippers at home the other day I was Kinda trimming decide my sideburns because I wear these dog on reading glasses now every time I put my glasses on his six all out and saw this tremendous side my hair and kind of cutting myself but I can't wait My hairstylist or Barbara. Wherever you want to call it. She's a lady Can can cut my hair of looking forward to that one at least get back in shape. I Know Ron Radio and so you really don't generally see my hair but I see it when I get ready to morning iota. The track and I don't like the way it looks at times. I saw your hair for the very first time back and I think it was the mid eighties. You brought your. Asa Car to Michigan for the Berlin raceway young loaded popped out of the out of the hauler there and everybody got a chance to see that you know that hair. That was all over the place. Was that kind of your thing if you will when you transitioned out of. Asa and into NASCAR well listened to Jeff Right now. My hair used to look like basketball so big so round and there really wasn't a stylus thing going on back then it was just. Hey just make sure. It'll fit the helmet. 'cause I got a racist week but all my gosh. I used to have hair. That was gigantic. It was almost a foot diameter. Real Super. Carly I got that curly stuff. My mom actually. She's got real curly hair too. But Yeah Oh my gosh. I got a lot of laughs at that and when I made it the NASCAR and I left a short tracks of America and got it down in the NASCAR land and started driving for penske. To first thing he did he looked I one day and he said you wouldn't mind if we cut your Hairdo we. Would you know Sir whatever it takes I just? I'm just so excited to make the Nascar so let's give you a haircut so but when I drove for the Gatorade guys back in early days in Nascar never said a word. I just kind of figured out that I had a kind of get it a little bit under control but the time that I drove for penske he was on me said. Hey cut that hair all right so if you could not saying you could but if you could would you go back to it when I go back to it. I've had people trying to talk me into that. You know I mean. Go back and have that curly haircut. I think a major right now my look kind of funny but you guys probably all know. Boris said I mean are the road course. Driver of my hair look almost identical to Boris. Said I mean it is really really big out there. A lot of people thought it was Kinda cool. But I don't know if I trust it. I don't know if I would trust going back to that radical of a haircut back then. I just didn't know any better. I wasn't trying to have some style or nothing like that of is just busy man. I was cranking on those race cars and you know having my hair perfect wouldn't big deal. You know. It reminds me of a rock and roller and this is kind of a segue into our second question. That comes to us from Dave in Nashville Tennessee. In a take it back again all the way. Back in Nineteen eighty-five you recorded a song for the world series of country music record stock car racing's entertainer of the year where multiple drivers during that time featured on the elbow. Do you remember putting net thing together? How did it come about and did you? I would imagine you had a great time doing it. I actually remember that thing really good a see house ago. I grew up in Saint Louis Carolina's now my home my pride my wife and children in the trophies that I own. That's the only part I remember. I do remember that and we had a great time. We worked to good singers. That's for sure but I remember that lear. How'd that thing ever come together? You recall You know I don't remember. How would the lead guy was that brought it together? Cow Petty Remembers that I was watching the thing on him the other day and he was talking about that day But I do one thing I do remember is they chose a writer for each driver and the rider. Kim Hung out with business. Tell me Your Life Story. Tell me everything you've done so I grew up in Saint. Louis I wanted to be a race driver and then I got married then. I started winning some short-track races and so he's listening to all this stuff. He's interview and put aside together. I grew up in Saint Louis Carolina. Now's my home. My prize my wife and children and the trophies at I own so goes on and on like that but you can tell how you can interview you and start building them The song with those with those words that interviewed so I think that's what he did with all the drivers and that's how they're they're songs were put together by their upbringing. And what how their life went. It wasn't just dreaming of something random of his actually all about them and observe story turned into a song. They put an album out. It was fun. We laughed about it. I think we did one appearance where we made us go up on stage and single song to the people listening and how I got through that with remembering the words I have no idea. But there's some of those words to stick in your head. Mammoth just one for me. All right let's close with this one and we'll stay on that musical theme your favorite musical artist. Who WOULD IT BE? Oh Man I've back on your right now. That's a good one and I don't care what people think but I was the biggest dog on top fan of my life. I loved the fuzzier tarred. I love the long beard and a lugged a really cool cars they had. They had some of the coolest hot Roz ever was so and and when I first heard started driving for Raymond beadle in the famous number. Twenty seven car. He was really really good friends with the guys Z. Z. Top in particularly billy gibbons and Raymond would take his Z. Z. Top concerts every now and then. And that's how I got to be such big Z..

"And I'll be ready on Wednesday the race on Thursday morning. I'd be ready again. It's just it's just I mean obviously you can get an accident sore. That's one thing but the adrenaline is an amazing thing that you go through when you compete in the sport like this it It will take care of us. I saw during the shutdown or lock out. Whatever you WANNA call it while we've all been waiting for this moment to finally come upon us. You got some fishing in you. Got Some time with the girls in. Have you done some things that you didn't think you would ever find yourself doing while we were in the shutdown situation cooking a lot more food I can tell you? That's a fact recipe really burgers on the grill. I've got my own beef cows so burgers on the grill or an easy thing to do. And the kids definitely enjoy homemade. French fries my My Mom's mom. My Grandma taught me how to make. Vegf is kidding. Some reason I've I've mastered with the last few months or so I I really just I. I have enjoyed a lot of time with my kids. I have enjoyed a lot of time at the farm work on small cars and things like that. Don't influence still miss. What was normal the racing life and and will I'm hoping at some point. Get back to that though. Sold Green Flag. Not just a Caution can you tell me? Grandma's French fries secret or would you have to kill me. I'll it's easy. It's just a matter of being Like anything else when you cook you. GotTa you gotTa prepare right and Cook it right and I use Russet russet potatoes. I this the way I slide. Some just makes my style of French fries. It's not a steak. Brian is not a shoestring FRY. And then I use MAZOLA oil Mostly because I got it for free but it is really well and Just just cook them in a actually I use a A Turkey fryer and With a basket. And that's it. It's just a matter of having the right temperature Which I couldn't even tell you. I don't use thermometer. I got professional temperature. If they're ready and I let her eat. Luton norm by doing. That's exactly right. I got you mentioned the animals. What's new at the rescue ranch? How're things going there? I saw a lot of social media. Seems like a lot of folks are helping out as best they can. During this time we've done videos and raise some awareness. You know it was really tough for us because it is a social activity to come out and have educational glasses in groups at the ranch so all those things down but yet the overhead and the responsibility of feeding the animals and not having the income as we had planned was tough. So are we appreciate everybody's support and we'll always appreciate their sport as much as they can help In many ways.

"Badly we welcome you back to NASCAR live. We are so glad you're with US sand who were so glad to be joined by the anchors of the motor racing network. Jeff Struggle and Alex. Hayden joining us. Gentlemen Welcome to the program. Hello Mike Hey Mike. How are you doing fantastic Alex? I'm going to start with you. Obviously over the weekend at Darlington we got back to racing. And the real heroes four hundred. You shared the booth on Sunday with Dave Moody. Can you give the listeners? A little inside behind the scenes sneak peak what it was like driving to the race track day of instead of the hotel getting there and all that you went through before we hit the air on Sunday. Yeah you know from where I live up on the coast of North Carolina. It's about an hour forty five minute drive straight down interstate ninety five and and it was it was. I guess nervous type of drive down because I wasn't sure what to expect. I had in my mind what it was going to be like when I finally saw the big grand stands at the Darlington raceway just off of the the two lane road there and pull aside the famous raceway grill right outside the track where we all like to dine in the race fans and competitors and when I finally got there I wasn't prepared at least what I thought I was going to be. There were no cars other than just some general traffic But no campers no tents no campfire smoke in the air. Just kind of hovering like a haze and you pull onto the property. You get stopped by the medical professionals and they do the temperature scan and a couple of quick questions and you get approved you move on and no midway and obviously working in the booth we park right behind the main grandstands there was no midway set up where all the vendors are and the souvenir trailers. That was surreal. There's just nothing. Just the the asphalt slab out there part literally right behind the grandstands and Jump on the elevator or the stairs. I opted for the stairs because I'm trying to at least be somewhat healthy and it took the stairs up in and the race itself. Once we took the green flag it was business as usual focused on. What's going on on the race? Track during commercial breaks. Sure we look around and we. Kinda just talk a little bit. About how unusual it was not seeing any fans and seeing all the green grass in the infield that's normally occupied by campers and tents But the biggest thing is is once Kevin. Harvick won the race and stopped his race car on the start. Finish line to normally do a checkered flag. Get FROM SHANGHAI. Bednarik our flag person yesterday and and you normally hear. The crowd is screaming and hollering fans gathering around and get a close up. Look at Kevin. Harvick is he gets out of the race car. Start Finish line. There was nothing there was absolutely nothing. Obviously our friends at Fox did their interview on on the Victory Lane Quote Unquote Stage at the start. Finish Line we did it as the motor racing network in the same spot and literally you hear Birds Chirping. They it was. It was silent. Not Not a sound not a tear. Nothing and that's when it really just smacked me in the face heart that this is different and it's very very unusual and it made me miss it even more. I missed the race fans and I cannot wait till we can open these gates backup. That was a similar takeaway. I Had Alex. I obviously listened from afar on M. R. N. and watched Thank you to our brothers and sisters at the Nascar on Fox Jevon. I assume that you had the same experience I did. It was it was. It was weird that you and I are used to being there. So we're watching and listening from afar but when they did the overhead shots not seeing the fans. It's amazing how much the fans bring to a race weekend and we obviously all of us miss them. Not being there yesterday in Darlington. Yeah we sure do Mont I miss being near you. Missed BEING THERE WINSTON. Kelly missed it but you know before we talk about the fans. I think you touched on something. You're listening to the motor racing network. You're watching NASCAR on Fox and in a tweet yesterday. I'm going to say you know right. Now how proud and I think I speak for you to Mike How. Proud we are of our sport today Watching the competitors watching Nascar Watch or listening to our brothers and sisters if you will with the motor racing network. Alex and day did an amazing job along with the rest of the team Mike Joy and Jeff Gordon did a great job bringing The pictures to life in amazing pictures we saw and I really think that what Alex touched on. And you referenced as well Mike is once the green flag came out. We were racing. You unless you took a shot of the grandstands it. It was business as usual right up until Kevin Harvick got out and kind looked around and just said man this is i. I didn't realize it would hit me like did. And that's not a quote but that was certainly what he was feeling. So no what you said Mike and what Alex said Nascar are is not Nascar without the fans but right now what we got yesterday or or watching the race. Spectacular was indeed and at the end of the day. We're talking about Kevin Harvick going to victory lane. Even though there were ten weeks of downtime Alex it would it would appear that your children's Kevin Harvick didn't miss a beat Stewart. Haas racing didn't miss a beat while they weren't necessarily setting the world on fire in the front part of the race. They did in the back. Half of the race yeah. They proved what they did in the opening four races of the year. They were the only team coming into Sunday's race at Darlington that had a top ten finish in all four of the racist prior. So we knew that they had competitive. Ford mustangs we knew that they were running towards the front of the field in every single race just yet to break into Victory Lane near twenty twenty and it was only a matter of time. You can't beat that consistent at the front of the field without finding victory lane. We knew they were good enough and by the time we got to about the three quarter of the race mark Sunday. We realized Harvick had a good enough car. And and I gotTa tell you one of the things that really jumped out at me and and this is something that's been A. I guess you can say a bit of a Hiccup for the four team is occasionally. They'll have bad pitstops occasionally give up track positional. Pit Road And Kevin Harvick has been very outspoken about that in the past is team has responded for that and they've done a nice job of rallying around that yesterday they had a couple of pit stop so they gave up positions one in particular They came in as the leader and came out eight so I was wondering that's something I was watching. How how was this team going? Respond Because we were well into the events when that took place. Arctic was able to get four positions back on the race track under green. They come back to pit road on another caution and the team gains them. A couple of spots so to me that the team aspect really Was shining brightly for Kevin Harvick and Rodney chillers in that entire race team because Harvard obviously did a masterful job on the race. Track itself but the pit crew while they stub their toe once or twice. They rallied and they got positions back when they needed it. So it was nice to see a good solid team effort across the board. Well we had a good solid team effort going for Jimmy Johnson Jeff and that ended on the final lap of Stage one in in an odd circumstance coming out of two and colliding with a lap cars spinning out. Where you like me that you thought ca forty eight had something for the Darlington. Absolutely I think the best organization on the property was Rick Hendrick in his four teams. But what did they come away with to show for it you know? I thought that William Byron was going to be very good. His Day ended early. Let's go back and talk about Jimmy. Johnson just I. It was heartbreak I appreciate it his interview on. Tv where he cook responsibility at the time. I just Mike I look at it and I'm like Jimmy. What was that you know? When they showed it over and over and every single time they showed it. I had the same spots. Jimmy what was that. You know coming to the checkered flag. No need to press the issue. You've got sizeable cushion over second. You're going to get the stage when you've got a very fast race car and oh by the way you have haven't one in a while take your time show some patients. I I hated it for him. I hated it for Jimmy Johnson pains and I really felt this way. Might and I don't know if you agree or not. I think NASCAR fans as a whole thought. Oh my gosh. That's awful even those that don't really care for Jimmy Johnson. Just because I think it was good to see Jimmy Upfront.

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman Walks Out of Hospital Holding Daughters' Hands After Wreck
"That's our driver Ryan Newman has probably heard walked out of the hospital this past Wednesday just two days after his horrific crash during the final lap of the Daytona five hundred is racing team tweeted a photo of the forty two year old Newman walking out with two daughters meanwhile the wreck last Monday had all the trappings of a tragedy right a speeding car flying up in the air turned upside down hit by another car in mid air on the driver side of the vehicle and bursting into flames skidding to a stop on its roof yet somehow Newman survived in his number six Ford here's an in depth look at the safety measures in place from Brent Scruton bore reporter at USA today print set this up for those who don't follow NASCAR I mean it's in the in a watch that crash which has been all over the news on mainly you wonder how anybody could survive something like that flips upside down to get it contend that driver side of the car and it's really a miracle that he survived it in a in a way it wasn't because if you look at what happened after Dellinger going hurt the legendary NASCAR driver after he died in the Daytona five hundred in two thousand one the people took a lot of steps with safety they need a lot of advancements and that one of them is we quietly in head and neck restraints in the car another is providing better and more energy ups or being the walls so that you're not crashing into a concrete wall like this happen before knowledge that the number of drivers could have died because of head injuries after collisions with a wall and have there been other engineering things that they've done they they started a research and development center in Concord North Carolina that opened in two thousand three and what they do is they they certified cars being safe enough they do research and safety testing and always looking for ways to make a very dangerous sport a lot safer and one of the other things I learned is that they they they put some energy and absorbing things and on the sides of the car and even moved the driver's seat closer to the center of the car and it you know you take all those things together and you watch it crash that happened on Monday and you can see how all those things could've saved his life speak with prince Croton for sports reporter at USA today about his piece entitled how did driver Ryan Newman survive that NASCAR crash at Daytona happened Monday night I didn't know that they had moved the driver seat a little bit more toward the middle that may have obviously helped Ryan Newman as well I mean to think that hit the wall first red hat on it well I would I would imagine a hundred ninety miles an hour if not yeah right the flies in the air then gets hits on the driver side like you know what what we would think like maybe his the side of his head we're going to buy another car going that speed is just the it's on the same couple are but now as you said this this R. and D. center I guess gets a lot of credit and that's unique it is the the the the first motor sports governing body that had anything like that yeah maybe that's really proactive you think about I mean did this kind of thing is that the so called part of the game the only thing for so long and they realize that one of the quotes I've read in a in other stories that I've read about this is you can have the heroes of your sport dying or something to that effect think about I mean it's a smart business move too it's not totally out of the goodness of their hearts and they want to continue to survive as a sport they can't have people die and every year like Taylor caught it right so they made an investment in in this kind of research and development and and it's it's not coming it's that's not to say that they've they've not been lucky I mean but I mean there may have been there haven't been any deaths in the three top national series in NASCAR since Earnhardt died but there have been plenty of injuries and collisions and sometimes you look at those you wonder how they survive though you know they are Kyle Busch and in twenty fifteen the a brokers like an extraordinary Dale Earnhardt's son Dale junior retired a few years ago because in part he had suffered a number of concussions and was concerned about his future in the towers that goes so I mean it's not killing a sport not without its risks it's obvious to say but you do wonder though even there though they have made such progress at I mean it's the risk is always gonna be that you still think it's a little bit of a crap shoot interview watch that video Ryan Newman crash he eat it what could fall to I mean the AutoCAD things definitely help but you know you're you're flying around in in in the area because of the strike like that there's a little bit of luck with landing in the right place and that

NASCAR America Motormouths: Carmichael recaps Daytona 500 Newman crash
"Five Times supercross champion and NBC analysts. Ricky Carmichael had the best seat in the House for that one. He joins US now on motormouth. Ricky I'M GONNA get to bikes in a bit but I wanna ask you about this past weekend you were in Daytona as an honorary official. And I know you've talked about Ryan Newman's wreck on your podcast. You've seen and been a part of crazy accidents even so what were your thoughts. You've taken back by what you saw was and I was glad he's okay. Just incredible the turn of events to see him walking out. Yesterday was definitely special and Man. I was thinking about him. I met Ryan through Kevin Harvick when I was driving for cage. I in two thousand nine and we've kept in touch ever since then. Everybody knows his sense of humor. Is is so fun. He's a great guy to be around so I was really concerned. Hated seeing that. And you know it's just daytona an all racing really. It can happen anywhere so I was concerned but at the same time I was so relieved to see the outcome yesterday. And hopefully he's going to be all good. I now we all breathe a sigh of relief. And you talk about that sense of humor. Sometimes I don't know fans get to see that but yeah he's a very a very funny guy so I'm glad you brought that up those crazy accidents though I talked about you having well. They've been on both lakes and in the NASCAR TRUCK SERIES. You mentioned driving out at number four for hi and back to back years at Daytona. I think two thousand nine and two thousand ten. What were your thoughts? I think you had some some some hits there at Daytona. It and the truck. Of course I of course I did. They weren't they weren't that bad. I was very lucky but I loved racing. They're a loved racing at Daytona whether it was two wheels four wheels. I was really excited to be able to raise four wheels there. Because you know my history there five-time Daytona supercross champ and to to be able to race at Daytona. Four wheels at a pretty high level race. There two thousand and ten. I believe it was so it was special. Just because I'd had so much success here on two wheels to be able to experience that racetrack on four wheels was something that I'll never forget. I'm so grateful for that opportunity but It's fast things happen fast. I always tell people you don't really know how fast you're going until something goes wrong and then when something goes wrong you're like oh man I really. There's a lot of speed here but I applaud NASCAR for what they do in the racetracks and making them as safe as they possibly can be. And that's what I really respect about about NASCAR so you kind of get comforting feeling a little bit when you get in get in those roll cages them race cars a little bit different compared to motorcycles as you know yeah had in my notes xfinity race in Daytona. Two thousand eleven. So yeah you were close but yeah you also know about comebacks to. I think it was a crash in a torn. Acl that kept you out of the two thousand four supercross season. You came back with a perfect run outdoors you want all twenty four motos. Obviously we don't know about Ryan's road to recovery or his future plans but can you talk about the mind of an athlete. What you went through mentally to to come back and then to come back even stronger. Yeah for me. It was. It was almost a blessing in disguise. I mean as you know Chris. I was at it for a while and competing competing at a high level winning championships at a high level. I think that that came at a great time. It kind of put things into perspective. It was a nice break at a four month. Break of just basically re having training doing all that stuff and it gave me the motivation and the the want again that. I wanted to go out there and race and finish out. The last three years of my career came at a perfect time. It wasn't ideal but it really boosted the next three years for me and so if you look at Ryan you know. Everybody knows that. He's strong and he feels like he's not done yet and he hasn't made it left the mark that he wants to racing then. I fully support it. He's very intelligent person. So I know that he'll make the right move and decision that is best for him and his family but he just has to believe in himself believe in himself his team and at the drive is still there then then I'm in support of of his his comeback. And you know anything can happen. You certainly fascinate. Had No reason. He can't be throughout the rest of the season.

So we're we're starting to get a new year new car announcements things that we waiting for for a while are starting to be unveiled in. You know we've Got New York auto show coming up in April. That's going to happen most sooner than than we think but as we've talked in the past. I'm more and more car. Companies are not necessarily just relying on the auto shows to announce their cars. Were seeing cars debuted at the Monterey Rolex historic and CBS and things like that. So you know there's a few that have caught our attention for a while now first off is the Ford Bronco What we know about the Ford Bronco is. It's going to be unveiled officially in March prior to the New York auto show in April. And it's going to be What we figured out is a Ford Bronco which is a body on frame. It's a full frame. A meant to be a beefier vehicle to compete with with the jeep and then a smaller. Bronco the broncos sport which will be a unibody vehicle. So it'll be more of a more of a what we know as as an SUV. Now that that structure so we have something that's a little bit more jeep jeep renegade jeep or gladiator versus something. That's a little more You know maybe defender something like that. Land Rover defender. But you know what we what we've always talked about in the past is is I really think. Ford's GonNa launch these vehicles especially the full size bronco with a huge aftermarket catalog because excess rising. This thing is going to be the biggest thing. Of course we're going to see them all over Beverly Hills. All tricked out with a bunch of stuff that no one's ever going to use but but it's going to be interesting to to to officially see this thing. I don't know if it's just a two door. Four door version and the broncos sport and how they sort of cater to those markets. But that's what we've got coming up we've got a Ford Bronco coming up in March Excited to see that. We've got a Bronco Sport which will be unveiled an April at the New York auto show and speaking of SUV's Cadillac is expected to unveil a mid size electric suv at the New York. Auto show as well we spoke about. We spoke about About them bring back the Hummer with up two thousand. I don't know a thousand horsepower. Some crazy rating like that and zero to sixty in three seconds and we've also learned since then that there's going to be at least two other motor options with maybe a little bit less power a little bit less range A little bit less. I don't know towing capacity We don't have all the specs on that but I don't know maybe some of this Electric drive train. That they've been working on is gonNA trickle over to Cadillac as well because I'm not sure who else they partner with on that. We'd have to do a little more research. Or maybe you guys listening know if this is all. Gm developing this stuff in house or if they partner with anyone somewhat similar to the way that Ford partner with with Riviera and so I like what's going on there but it looks cool. I I was watching. I was watching a little bit of TV. Last night. And I was flicking through the channels and I saw the commercial for the new Cadillac C. T. Five I. That's a good looking car. I'd like to really see that thing in person and hopefully get one to two test drive. But that's a that's a pretty interesting looking pretty interesting looking cars to sharp looking thing. I'm not sure if you've seen any of this yet bill but pretty cool man I just. I want him to come up with something that I consider. Yeah right I don't know like I I all I listen. I know you've got you've got the big dodge truck in your guys that gearhead fabrications going to be doing you know big engine swap or something on it but I tell you I am. I am intrigued by by this Ford Bronco. Of course we we we. We love the brand. We love the name. We Love The history. Any of us not be. I mean. We've been clamoring for that thing for youth. Yeah and I'm still you know for me especially because such a fan of the aftermarket I love. I can't wait to see what the aftermarket does with this thing and I think it's just gonna I think we're GONNA see a ton of these things at at the sema show as we should because everyone is going to be working on new products and stuff for everything from increasing power to offroad capabilities. So it's GonNa be cool. I you know we've seen the spy photos we've seen with the BRAS and the camouflage all this stuff on it and I'm Kinda hoping that it gets a little bit more in line with what the concept vehicle look like but also keep in mind that you know if it's a little off on that the aftermarket probably fix that. The market's going to say. Hey we really liked the concept vehicle. I think it was the silver one. So we'RE GONNA start coming out with some things that maybe a get you a little closer to looking like that. Now we know by time. Everything goes to production. There's a ugly mirrors in side markers and all the things that that we need to. You know to be safe and legal but I you know it's GonNa be exciting it's GonNa be exciting and The the other car that came up that our friends over at shelby went out to to shelby in Vegas a little while back when I was driving the GT five hundred says well and and shelby shelby's been doing their own versions of the car sees these post title packages and the Shelby Super Snake was usually that are big package. But now they They said they've been working on this for a while. Shelby signature series and. This goes on top of a super snake. They start with the basics of a super snake package. They're using a huge whipple super charger. Making eight hundred twenty five horsepower and and the shelby signature. Mustang is going to have some additional bits onto that. There's a wide body options. I saw some of the wide-body conversions that they were doing at their factory in Vegas and I saw some of the steel wide-body so it looks. It looks pretty good. They've got a good. They've got a good look to it If it's anything like that hell cat. Red Eye y body that I was driving. That's a lot of front tire man. I was just tracking into every little groove on the road. Like I was saying before between that amount of power and that much frontier. It's not the easiest thing to drive. It's fun Super Fun. I tell you what though you know? And and after you mentioned that I really took note of that and especially have especially happens when he got three fifteens all the way around. I mean it comes real fives on it but I'll on all mine. I got three teams all the way around but I got my green demon. Set Up to ninety five on the front and I'm GonNa see if that's GonNa make a difference I've really don't believe that it's GonNa make too much but The caveat is that the carbon car has the K. W. The carbon cars got the K. W. Suspension and it completely eliminates that. Oh yeah well. That's actually an interesting point that you you mentioned that just wrapped up in the shelby. There's they're gonNA make fifty of the signature. Shelby Shelby's signature mustangs. They're going to start at one hundred. Twenty seven thousand seven hundred ninety five. Bucks Savior Ducats and then give them a call. It's interesting that you made that point about this suspension because on my my truck I've got the two ninety five tires all the way around on it now It's it's you know. The stock was a was. A to seventy five but I went to an overall larger diameter which is the bigger footprint and a wider tire which is bigger footprint and I hadn't lowered with the with the DJ 'em suspension kit and there are shocks that it just a a a twin tube shocked that's meant to sort of get as not be super expensive. Forty fifty bucks shock and get it to work with the lowered suspension. But I'm realizing to your point. The the suspension the shock evolving the shocks themselves contribute so much to the ride quality the springs of course but it's controlling that balance in that rebound and whatnot. So I've been chatting with I've been chatting with Jon. Hotchkiss AT HOTCHKISS SUSPENSION. And he doesn't make a suspension kit for the lightning. And I'm not going to change up what I have too much. But he's developed for his muscle car market an electrically controlled shock. This is he's put into the aftermarket what we're starting to see in so many new cars. You know when you when you get in a car and you hit the sport mode of the track mode of the you know the the normal mode. It changes shock changes. This suspension changes the steering changes. The engine calibration and I wanted to bring a little bit of that that that new suspension technology into the lightning to see if we can control. Can we make a smoother ride but also make it handled better and he has a system that it it's basically three modes and you can program each mode? And then you have a dial on the dash that's basically street track or auto and he's got He's got a sensor like a like a gyro in the car and it senses turning left and right it's it's spent centers body roll body movement even breaking the brake dive and accelerating and it changes the shocks instantly. Do accommodate that or you can just leave it in. One of the two modes. So what we're trying to do is. Can we come up with an adjustable dynamic base an active shock system for the lightning? And does it make sense to do that? So yeah hopefully bill. We can get something that rides a little bit smoother a little bit easier to control with the larger tires and get a little bit of that new technology that we're seeing a nuke and cars today into a you know a truck that's going on twenty five years old should be pretty interesting. Well come under him and we do. Yeah can we do so? One of the issues he brought up was is the length of the shock. The shock actually needs a bit of travel. So if you've got like if you think of the hot rods running the Mustang to suspension and they got these little whatever seven inch shocks and only about an inch and a half of travel. You're not a lot. You can do with an active suspension. When it comes to this you need more travel so if if the shocks on my truck are not long. Because it's lowered. We needed a shorter shock if they're not long enough already. We may have to weld on new shock. Mounting points like imagine the rear axle just a straight acts on the back of the truck. It's just got a.

"Know like you said. Man. Let's everybody stop and take a breath and a prayer for Ryan and all those guys were really close to them. You know all the NASCAR guys are. They're mostly all friends of mine and Ryan has been around for a long period of time. He's been very successful new. You obviously don't wish that upon anybody but to see then he's able to survive something like that like you said is a testament. To The you know the the safety advancements and I mean look at the cockpit and the Formula One I mean. Is it really much different than a fighter pilot you know cockpit? I know and we're GONNA see the new Aero Shield or the basically the windshield or whatever. They're calling it on on. Indie this year and a lot of the guys have been driving with a testing with it and you know I'm sure guys have different opinions about like. How do you get used to it and can you see through it and what happens throughout the race? The dirty things like that but for the most part I think. Sort of commending. The the idea of increased safety because these are not getting any slower. I'll tell you that they're you know. Look and by the way this past week. I think this past Tuesday was the anniversary. Nineteen years of Dale EARNHARDT's death You know and and his accident was a game changer. On safety standards like from their coordinated. And unfortunately we have to see something like that before we can really commit to big changes in drag racing. Look how much the John. Force racing team has put forth advancements in safety after. Forgive me I forgot the the guy's name but their teammate. That died years and years ago. And and we've seen some pretty you know. We see some pretty horrific things on the track over there as well. Cars exploding spinning around and an all kinds of stuff. So it's a IT'S A. It's a crazy sport. Car racing is a crazy sport. It's it's you know I wish. Ryan Newman the best and glad to hear. He's doing a little bit better again. You guys have seen the scenes the same statements that we have at this point simply saying that that their doctors are saying that his injuries now are not considered life threatening but but definitely critical and You know it's it's tough and I hope I hope he gets better. I hope things go well for him. I used you know able to continue with his with his career in racing. And because we don't know much else beyond that but but crazy race crazy event. You know our. It's unfortunately part of the damn allure right. You know you look at it. It's it's so exciting to watch these guys teeter the edge and you know I don't know if it says something negative about our society or I I it's just I I don't know but when you see those guys bumping and grinding two hundred miles an hour and then someone takes off. There's I I don't know man. It's it gets national attention and unfortunately you know people get hurt sometimes but you can't deny that that's part of the allure. You know it's part. It's watching the hockey Part of the allure is fighting. Because it's you know it's it's different. You're right unfortunate that you know it's I don't I don't know what I'm what point. I'm trying to make but it would. I mean I. I understand what you're saying right. We are a little bit disillusioned. We're watching a we're watching the Daytona five hundred or watching these epic crashes happening and we're watching it on our TV in the same way that we watch movies and television. That are unrealistic right. 'cause they're movies and then our -taining we can. We can sit there and we can watch Ford V. Ferrari we watch a John Wick movie. And we're so entertained by the crashes and the and and the fighting and all the crazy stuff that's happening and when you watch a real race on TV it's tough for for us to go. Well what's really the difference between the reality of it and and the make believe Hollywood version of it because we're just sitting on our couches eating doritos watching this event. And you know yeah and it takes. It takes a conscious effort to realize one of them is real. And what isn't you know if you're at the race and you see what's going on and and you can hear it and smell it and yeah it's it's much more of a realistic thing but just for the for the you know for the millions of people that watch this stuff at home. You're right it just still kind of feels like it's exciting and it's interesting because you're seeing this epoch stuff happening in front of you but you don't realize hey man this is real this is this is real life going on so well also to you and I both know 'cause we've been at these races difference between a crash at ninety seven miles an hour and a crash at two hundred. So when you're watching when you're watching Bristol and the allure of Bristol is it's robbins racing and there's going to be Franken. You know hundred racks in this thing because guys are so tight and such a small course you know but at the end of the day that that race you know that that the outcome the negative effect of a crash is much less severe than obviously the double the rate of speed. So you know you you go back to the youtube videos. Guys that are been posted up there and watch some of the stuff. Watch some of the stuff in slow motion. Cars are flying through the air and bouncing off of things like a rubber ball lake at that speed at that speed the aerodynamics everything involved with with those types of crash and you look at Newman's crash how terrible it is just getting hit again and again you know this. Isn't you. Hit The wall and you and you spin out as horrible as that is. That's one below but this is like you've been in you've been in the ring but you've also fought 'em may this is. This is the the guy pounding you and once you're all taken three more shots to the face before the raft jump said right like this. Unfortunately I haven't been man. I was too smart. Yeah I mean you know you try to like in your experiences in Bay. There's nothing man. There's nothing that the normal person can relate to compare to what these guys are going through and I remember years ago. Remember the ignorant comment by Donovan. Mcnabb that these NASCAR guys aren't atheletes Oh my God man. That's so far from the truth. Man I mean especially with this new generation kids. I mean everybody followed the Jeff Gordon Mold you know and Work or the Mark Martin thing started that working trends but I mean those have to be an unbelievable shape. I mean who was Jimmy Johnson? The one that ran the marathon half marathon before the race early this year. I I don't know if it was the Daytona marathoner was but I mean those guys are unbelievable shape. They don't nearly get credit that they deserve a little mid. That's like you. So then. They deserve even more credit. Like this is why I hit the wrong machine before the podcast. It's more I gotTA stretch it out. I gotta get ready for this. You can't just walk past. Your you know has an empty seat. You gotTA fill in there. You go all right. Kaelin'S GONNA grab he's GonNa grab a Marcus Angel. Get an update on that. I'm going to tell you guys a little bit about gyco while he's doing that. Let's say you a home. You rent a homeowner home. Well you know a lot of times. It can be a lot of work over there so what you know what's easy. It's bundling your policies with Geico. Geico makes it easy to bundle your homeowner's or renter's insurance along.

"There was a huge outcry right. Yeah Guy even went to court and try to convince the judge that he should be able to do this and of course you did not win obviously but that reflects the links some people will take to do what they WanNa do print what they want to print say what they want to say and have absolutely no feelings about the people who are family members who are friends who are suffering. Yeah in the entire situation. This individual with autopsy photos is the same person but I think he might be the person who came in to the media center the day after Blaise Alexander was killed. And we've talked about that I've written about it in the two thousand and one Daytona five hundred book but he actually came into the media center and was laughing about plays Alexander. He actually had the nerve to say. Oh Billy Francis killed another one I very talking about. It's not the same individual but okay attitude. He said that and Steve. I had now to body experience. I mean I think you know me well enough to know that not gonNA lose my head and shouting screaming cuss and everything like wolves. When he said that I was sitting across the media center and I started screaming at him. I said shut your likely black mouth also for you and have a little bit of blankety blank respect for the guy and his screaming back may hear you and if we had been close to each other yeah I I don't know one of us took swaying in there. I was cussing him like there was no Tamara. And everybody knew me is the Nas clean-cut Christian guy they are and I will never forget before he came in. I had been sitting at my desk and Bambi Matteo. Who is one of our photographers at the top? She had been standing there. And we've been talking about some photo that I needed or whatever. When I started screaming describe. Babies is got as big around as manhole covers. I remember I'll never forget her. Taking a couple of steps back but stave. That was just a sign of that time that that entire press corps was under so much pressure the years two thousand two thousand one of those were some bad tops. Apps really bad times now getting back to social media overall. I was pretty proud of the reaction on social media have by asking for prayers and but there were a few that you know maybe kind of proved that the First Amendment isn't all that it's cracked up debate. There was one in particular that actually had the nerve to say that because Ron Newman had evidently expressed some kind of support for Donald Trump that he basically had this comment he deserves. Some bad Karma. Good grief I don't care if you're Democrat Republican conservative liberal. Whatever business going on I mean. It's it's totally ridiculous. Yeah and that was obviously a crazy thing to say but I also thought that it was funny on the other side of the fence. You had people going back him and basically cussin' this person but in the very same tweet saying today we won't be praying for on Newman. I don't know how that kind of mixes better. I do know some church members like that but hey you know well back to the point. I think you're trying to make is the fact that anybody who can sit there and bring politics any any situated Ryan or anybody else is involved in it. Yeah got as I have no work. I have no words I think the biggest thing that this year's Daytona five hundred drove home is the fact that safety was is and always will be a huge factors are considered that what happened in the year. Two Thousand and two thousand and one and then what happened? Initiate state on the five hundred. The difference is thankfully Ryan Newman was able to utilize all safety advances. That have been made since the start of the two thousands and that at large role probably saving his life. Yes it did and I thought it was kind of ironic. That Tuesday was February eighteenth and that was the nineteenth anniversary of the two thousand and one Daytona five hundred and because of everything that had happened the year before and in the two thousand and one Daytona five hundred and with Blaise Alexander. Later in two thousand one in the Charlotte Arca race. Steve I gotTa Tell You I believe that we had maybe Kinda SORTA lulled ourselves into a false sense of security. That may well be true. Because of all the safety events to the tracks into the cars we've come to accept the fact that drivers might be so safe. There really isn't going to be much of a about. Let me tell you something as long as a cargoes fast. Yes and as long as the car goes two hundred miles an hour at a two and a half mile track they are going to be. Problems is inescapable. And you have to understand that Steve out went to breakfast morning at my usual. Hang out in the mornings and of course the conversation was about Ryan Newman and there was one guy sitting there. We've heard it before from a million different people. Sure but he was sitting there and he was saying they need to take him down restrictor plates off and they. I don't care if they run three hundred miles an hour. Let's see who has the biggest balls? Yeah right yeah absolutely. Go ahead rice. Sure yeah he didn't bring out though Candy Ass Lon but this is the same mind CEO. Yeah and I actually told him. I said if that car is going three hundred miles an hour and he gets upside down. It's in the grandstand and if it's in the grandstands let's start talking about golf game over at that point so. I do think that we have laud ourselves into a false sense of security. This sport is still very dangerous. I think that there's some things that they could do to. Maybe make it a little bit less this whole blocking thing. The the yellow line is one thing. I think you've got a point there. Yeah I think that they need to somehow take a look at at all the block in this going on the yellow line rule. Do Away with that. I mean if they can make a pass in the grass going through the infield. That's fine but again. This is not a situation where it's a video game and when you crash you just hit reset. Yeah when you crash you hit reset. Car is inherent in auto racing. Although is to it now the advancements made in safety all the way around are great and they have made the sport safer. But I'm telling you nothing they do or anybody else does is gonNA make it perfectly safe. It's not happening. You got a car two hundred miles an hour and there's forty two or forty three or thirty four zero. Would it be one out there with them? That particular car things can happen. It's the Law of physics. You touch here s card going to turn around you touches guy. They're GONNA go aboard. All these things can happen in because things can happen. That are not good things. I think. That's the proof that we can never ever ever take our eyes off the prize of safety. I agree with you know everybody has theories. Everybody says this is what we need to do. That's what we need to do. There are Brazilian theories about what can happen. But as long as you go two hundred miles an hour anything can happen. Anything can happen. So Steve I think that it was appropriate for us to sit down and talk about these kinds of things and certainly our prayers are with Ron hearth ulcer with him absolutely now we will be back next week with the last part of our interview with Kyle. Petty and a look at our Western Cup saying issue of the week. So we'll see you next week..

"Did team owner Joe apologizes for his team. Celebration while Ryan. Newman was being tended to his injuries. I knew that it was raised by never even focused over there. I was focusing on our car and everybody started celebrating around us. I say to everybody out there. Some people may have sauce several. These guys are celebrating when there's a serious issue going on so hopefully apologized thereby but we really didn't know we got the winner's circle then that's when people told us later on the winter circle so I wanted to explain that everyone and just makes it so hard Such a close knit community. You know everybody and this is one thing kind of like what Danny was saying. If you think about all the wrecks that we've had over the last now how many number of years and some of them look look real serious. We've been so fortunate so anyway. Just want to say in the state that for everybody. That's that's what took place for us and so now it's you know it's hard. We're all waiting jobs back for more Winning the Daytona five hundred hard despite Joe Gibbs racing consistently making it look very easy. I think as far as Winning this race I can tell you how hard it is we. I think we were a stretch of twenty. Two years didn't win it Just on our race team you got Martin Kyle been here fifteen times. Haven't won it and then to have Denney You know in sports. Thanks sometimes. You're not you're not quite sure. Why or how when you watch somebody Just have a gift and even last week stat was miraculous for him to get back out there and be able to you know down lap and everything so I think he does this. One of those things you have to say. This one of the things is fans. We love to see somebody. Special has a gift and finally we wrap things up with Chris. Gebhardt winning his second Daytona five hundred atop the box break it. Yep Well I told somebody come pit road. I'm not going to buy any lottery tickets for the rest of my life. I it's amazing that One second and as many Daytona five hundred crew chief but For me personally This one is is honestly way more special for me The first one was my first race's kerchief chief for the eleven Fedex camera with Denny and you know you just have so many great resources behind you is really just riding the wave. I'm trying to figure out you know what's going on and I felt like Denny in the team we're doing all the work To be honest with you I'm very very lucky to receive it but three hundred sixty five days later after put together the season that we put together in twenty nineteen as a team and me being fortunate enough to be asked to lead that team This one is so much more viable to me. Because I feel like I've earned this one I feel like I belong Feel like this team is capable of of excellence. And this one. This will means a lot more to me personally so Denny wins his third of the last five Daytona five hundred's. He is a restrictor plate. Ace among you know weaklings. Yeah and if you'd like some expanded Daytona five hundred stats for Denny. Hamlin my colleague Joseph's Wrigley at Tokyo's Dot Com statman. Yup has a impressive one. He was posted to twitter. You ready for this all right so denny. Hamlin's third win Daytona five hundred history like you were talking about moments ago. Seventh top five. Finish for him in Fifteen Daytona five hundred starts. Hamlin has never DNA after and the Daytona five hundred in his career and has completed two thousand nine hundred and ninety eight laps out of a possible. Three thousand one laps in the Daytona. Five hundred that's four or that seven thousand four hundred ninety five miles out of a possible seven thousand five hundred and two point five miles. That is incredible. Amazing Al Pile on for you. If you'd like second closest finish in history and of course any was a part of the other one edged out Martin tricks and the other. So that's That's wild of course this all takes a back seat to what we're going to talk about here in a little while but You know guy at least give me a little bit of do. This is a pretty historic moment. three Daytona Five. Hundreds of something you don't see very often To back to back is something. You've only seen three other drivers. But then he do in the past Richard Petty. Did it once kill your road at once? And of course sterling. Marlin did it wants as well so Denny Hamlin joins that prestigious group of guys to win the Daytona five hundred and back to back seasons next Daytona truck series winner grant and finger on the program. We call this T. Nfl W grant like us at FACEBOOK DOT COM SLASH. The final lap. This is the final land weekly on the final with us. Today is grant and finger truck series winner from Daytona. Welcome to the program. Hey thanks all right. So has that whole thing sunk in yet I mean winner at Daytona grant figure. Now go together. He know what has again is what it means for this year. Emperor has made an accord in the playoffs in Amethi did. It has a four hour season but not. I don't think that we actually want on it. And I said Maine's Burger everybody involved That's up in. It might take a little while for for that to sink in yet now. The good.
