"It opened up a new stand that sold hot dogs and hamburgers that stand eventually went onto sell tacos over the course of a couple years it was across the street from a family owned Mexican restaurant and Glenn Really Fell in love with the food and the culture and thing one of the best stories that we've heard from. that he's told that is the first TACO that he sold. He put on the menu for nineteen cents, and the gentleman came up and asked for a Tako. You didn't even know how to pronounce it. That was kind of the overall a feeling of of Mexican food in the time there really wasn't a lot of Jr, so for him to kind of bring it in. In and make it more available with something that he was really passionate about, and and and so he did that, but Matt wants to be clear TACO. Bell is not claiming to serve authentic Mexican cuisine. We try to be really careful to ensure. That were especially now more than ever. This is not of course strict. Mexican cuisine The cheesy Gordy to crunch is not something. Something I believe is going to be making in the family kitchen, and we understand that we want to make sure that we're respectful of that, but I think at the time in one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty, two, even into the seventies, eighties that for a lot of people was their first foray into Mexican inspired food even up until the seventies, there were actually pronunciations underneath the. The menu items, so you can actually see. It's Taco or Burrito, because again people are not seeing them in a lot of places before, but back to the TACO bell. Timeline Glenn opened a Mexican inspired place, called Taco Tia, and then after a few years he closed that, and he opened up L. Taco, and then he closed that down, and you're like Oh my God. What is he going to open? Taco Bell Than Nineteen Sixty two, he opened up a restaurant called TACO. Bell nineteen sixty five had the first Franchisee, and then it grew from there, but the first restaurant in nineteen, sixty two was about the size of a two car garage Call it numero UNO It was operating in Downey California up until the mid eighty s in the mid eighties. Taco bell left the building and many other restaurants occupied that space over the years until the building was set to be demolished in two thousand fourteen, and we ended up saving the building week before it was to be demolished, and raise the building from its foundation, put her on a flatbed truck, and it from down toward headquarters in Irvine were currently says okay, so earlier rose mentioned the Taco Bell Hotel which is a real thing, but unfortunately it was kind of a one. One off weekend we launched this last year. It was hot. It was in Palm Springs. We had about seventy rooms that we took over at a local hotel and everything from the soap to the wallpaper to the pillows to the pool was themed out Taco Bell and Redone. Re skinned synchronized swimmers with hot sauce packet swimsuits room service was all Taco Bell and we had about I'd say close to four hundred folks come through over the six day period. It's sold out within two minutes by the time we put it up for availability. So that's pretty much beyond say. Levels of sellout times. Get your nails done with Taco Bell. Are you can get fade? Put into your hair which I did and if anyone's wondering and takes about.

"Rose McGowan grew up in Italy, but she moved to the US when she was ten years old, so her last meal is an amalgamation of these two childhoods. It'd be chicken Milanese made in Milan preferably, so it's done right. Sauteed, Spinach, Wisconsin and olive oil, roasted new potatoes. Rosemary all oil and probably a nice. I don't know a guy red wine from a region in Italy that I. Really like the Super Tuscan a great wine but I would also. My alternate one would be Taco Bell to being Britos no onions add sour cream one hard shell, Taco and medium. Pepsi thank you. Okay, I was going to ask you about this because when I was googling around I always Google the person minute interview, and then I add the words food and eating after their name, and the only thing about food that came up for you is Taco Bell over and over again. Yeah, la I mean they have a Taco Bell Hotel. Go on, yes, in Palm Springs California. I'm like I must go there. Day of Taco Bell Room Service is not Mexican food is Taco. Bell's very specifically its own thing and And I I I was not allowed to eat anything like that growing up at all, but when I was homeless, the kids I was running with would eat Taco bell. We'd say we'd turning cans or things like that for the money back for the ten cents, an organ ten cents, and that's when I fell in love a Taco Bell, and it's still like my main comfort food, and in fact I did a documentary called citizen rose its own Amazon, but there's one scene in my ox. Call me. She's like rose. Something really serious was going on in that scene Ronan Farrow and fact, Checker New Yorker. We're telling you that you know your life have been infiltrated by on Israeli, spy data. Steal your book, but she's like honestly rose all I. could focus on was that you are wearing a Taco bell sweatshirt? Did you have to wear a Taco Bell? Sweatshirt on TV. I'm like yes. Yes, I do well. Just you know you know how you can change the background when you're doing zoom meeting. I did yesterday. That made it. Look like I was at Taco Bell. So that is an option for you go, yes. You're out this background thing I don't know why we'll let me do it. It's really annoying. Ask someone. Help I couldn't figure it out either so good. Is that been your? Has that been your order since you were thirteen years old? Yes, and have you tried anything else or did you just cling to that one and you love it forever. Yeah, one time I tried something else and it was that Damn Doritos Loco Taco, and I was like that is so disgusting I'm never doing that. And then finally it was like six months along, and I was like fine I'll try it the only time we got really quite ill from Taco. Bell it just that was too much for my stomach and do you do any of the hot sauces I I like just the hot sauce. Only one packet on each Rita I love this so much, so this is kind of like the highs and lows because your first. First Choice. Is this meal that you'd prefer to have in Italy, and then the second one is any Taco Bell and America does that kind of describe you in any way, high and low person? Yes, exactly, that is really interesting, an astute observation question and I have to say my accountant is like you spend the least amount of money on food of anybody I work with, and I just thought I don't really understand the concept of like spending a lot of money on lavish meals in wine, because it just goes away of course like a nice meal, but If I'm in Italy or somewhere with amazing food, I'll eat a lot, but otherwise I can eat to survive I could take a pill. Not even care like I. don't care. Kanye Lot. I'm one of those people I like candy I like like Lassie Taffy now later. Anything fluorescent I. Really like for her last meal rose McGowan wants either chicken Milanese eaten in Milan with Garlicky, sauteed, spinach and roasted rosemary, new potatoes glass of red wine made in Tuscany or Taco Bell. No onions at center cream, one hard shell, Taco and medium. Pepsi thank you there is something called a third place, so your first place is your home. Your second place is where you work. If you have a job, and then your third place is where you spend your third biggest chunk of time and in Highschool, my third place was Taco Bell, or maybe just the Taco bell parking lot because we would go through the drive through and then just hang out in the parking lot hours. Hours, my friends and I would go to Taco bell almost every day after school and I think it's pretty common to have a standard, or they're just like rose has asked some friends of the show to share their standard Taco bell orders to being burritos sauce, extra cheese, extra onions to beats crunchy TACO. SUPREMES I without fail order the Mexican Pizza Dr Pepper in a true Mexican pizza with light. Meet to Crunchy tacos lots of mild sauce. The burrito easy on the onions and a coke. That was Natalie. Who is one of my high school? Best friends and it's funny. What you think is cool in high school. One of the things that I thought was really cool about. Natalie was that we would go through the drive through we would order. We would eat our food in the parking lot, and then I remember the first time she said this. I thought it was so cool. She said I like to eat and then I like to go back through the drive through and get cinnamon to us for dessert and I thought. This was so classy to do double drive thru now. We're having our second course of desserts. All Right? Let's us to one more recording of Kassy's classic Taco Bell Order. My Standard Order is a number. Ten was one of the Tacos soft-shell instead of hard show. Add tomatoes to the tacos, but do not add sour cream and medium Dr Pepper however in a very very sad turn. TACO bell continued. Combo number ten about one month ago, today, thoughts, prayers and condolences to Cassie as she gets through this emotional time. Last regular Taco Bell Order thank you for asking is left over from my college days. I would get a cheesy to crunch. Add Sour cream and a chicken cassidy, and no green Sauce Cup for water. That's when you were eating inside. And for those of you who don't know I have a sour cream. Addiction and I've always been obsessed with the large metal industrial sour cream gun at Taco bell uses to squirt sour cream all over their food so I talked about this. So often that several years ago, an ex-boyfriend plan to surprise me with one for Hanukkah, but he said that he didn't get it for me. Because it costs more than one hundred dollars, and it seemed like a very expensive joke, and now you don't have to ask me why. We're not a couple anymore. Anyway enough about me and the sour cream gun that I will never own. Let's talk about Taco Bell. I called a Matte Prints Taco Bell Senior Public Relations, manager, and unofficial historian I think back to when I was a little child and asked me what I wanted to be. When I grew up, it was always Taco Bell Historian, so I think of I followed that path pretty well. I used to have a boss. You're at the radio station that I work at new called me Rachel, Taco, Bell and every time I write TACO. Bell is spell. Spell it like my last name. Right TACO. The E. L. L. E. and I'm telling you this. Because Taco bell is named after someone Taco Bell is named after the company's founder Glen Bell Yes so Glen Bell was a pretty, Amazing Guy, an entrepreneur at heart his story. I think we can probably start. When he served in World War Two, he was a marine and he served on the USS, Rochambeau and on that ship he served as. Basically, a cook and a waiter, and so that's really where he learned how to cook. That's where you learn about food supply numbers service. All of those things kind of though he would later help him and producing restaurants after Glen. Bell left the Marines. He came home and opened his first business. A hotdog stand called Bellas. Drive in in San Bernardino the same city where McDonald's opened its first. First restaurant, and he did for a couple of years ended up selling.

"There are TACO. Bell restaurants in twenty six countries outside of the United States, but the only market that they failed in is Mexico which is ironically where our little Taco Bell? Lover chose to write out the pandemic was up and I was like I'm GonNa. Go Beautiful. SIP The quarantine out there, and and pay a third of the rent in Mexico and and I've been coming to Mexico for twenty years, so we are you in Mexico? I'm in Cobo, which is about an hour outside of to loom and it's. Just a lot of Pyramids and jungle and Beautiful! That's bad, Wifi, but other than that. Rose had what many would consider an unorthodox childhood. She was born and raised in Italy, where her dad ran the Italian chapter of children of God. You know we'll call it. A cult what I grew up in, and that has a lot of negative connotations I grew up in a group, called the children of God and certainly did you know later on become quite dangerous and bad, but the original ideology, and why my parents joined, they were. were trying to live a utopian life, but I think ultimately because they come from the system, they couldn't really get free of the system, but the kids were raised including myself in a very interesting way in that we're just raised very differently from for most people kind of hyper educated was reading full books at two and a half I got dumber as the years have gone on. Don't worry, but I used to be very smart kid and. It's something that a lot of people like. Oh, so weird a Europe walls. We're how you live. Frankly according to Rose's memoir, her family left children of God started advocating for sexual relationships between adults and children. Her Dad took the kids and move the family to the United States, but before rose left Italy. It says you were a child model in Ben, beanie and I just love it. It's called Vogue. Bambini isn't that cute very cute and they have a vogue for kids there so stylish in Italy. Yes, but I was a boy, I played like I always had the boy role in my sister, daisy, fluffy, blond hair and blue eyes, so in your pictures I was always like I was holding like flowers, and giving into her, but I always kind of had BICA surly expression on my face. A little bit like this sucks. I might giving daisy flowers looking back I'm like Oh, the cute, little boy! That's what my role was, so it wasn't like because I was a pretty little girl I was A. A child model. I think it was more those pretty boy, and then you came to the US when you were ten landed in Eugene. Talk about your time in Portland and your involvement with the drag community, and then moving to Seattle your whole Pacific Northwest Life Pacific northwest. Life was real. The first place actually landed was a place called gig harbor Washington when I was ten and I had to go to a school I went from a Hippie Commun- to a military school in Washington State Haida very redneck. Redneck kind of area, and that was a really horrible transition, and that's Kinda when I invented my on imaginary friend, which I called planet nine, then new gene was like like I did my first head of acid at the eighth grade dance. A you know in middle school. Someone's like you WanNa. Listen it like sure like hallucinate is until you actually do it. First of all I'm of course than it changed the course of my life. My Mom's husband was like she has the makings of a drug addict. Addict, let's lock her up. So I got locked up. Rehab was supposed to be there for a long time and I was like I kept telling them. You can't addicted hallucinogens first of all, but I didn't even know that yet. They would be like you're a drug addict. People at the Rehab and I'm like no not like your denial like this is so good I cannot get out of this so I scraped, and I ran away with to drag Queens now we recall them Trans Women Trans Girls. But back down there was called drag queens you know. And they became my very fast friends Mike Protectors. loves and and I actually I was homeless by thirteen for almost a year, and though I got really bored of being hungry, tired at the end, I had a lot of fun. It was weird like huckleberry. Finn but drag Queens until I. Mean you grew up in Italy, but you were really young when you left. Do you have a connection to the country and to the food culinary? Like things you remember from when you were a kid? Oh. Yeah, God. I mean I've pretty much lived on just pasta. That was my Jan by when I came to America. I cry because I knew my life as I knew it at least food, wise over because some church lady from the school techniques Danny's than I didn't know if that was now is like what they had pictures of everything native picture of plate, of Spaghetti I very excited and. Speaking, rapid fire Italian I pointed at it, and ordered it, and it came in. It was like one congealed Blob of Yuck. A started to cry so I was like. Never give me to say that said England has terrible food. They need to get it together. Still I that it had changed with Oto lame. Maybe some of the fancier restaurants, but if you're like low key ordering in disgusting I, go to bed, hungry a lot actually I don't know how to cook really well, so I do read Hungary rose. There is no reason to go to bed hungry. There's toast there cereal. There's cheese and crackers. There's apples and peanut butter. Actually I have to confess and Laura is here with. With me recording, so I want to know what what your go to would be for like if it's late at night, and you're hungry, and you don't WanNa Cook anything so last night I was in that position and I didn't WanNa make anything I didn't want to snack on anything unhealthy, because I'd already brushed my teeth, so this was like a real serious snack situations so. I jumped out a can of corn that I had bought for Corentin. You know at the beginning in March when we were teenagers were corn, corn and. This is like one of those things I bought when I thought we had to stock up and dumped a whole. Can of corn and a bowl and I put some butter and Sultan and a eat it in my bed and I felt like it was a very sad snack, but also it was kind of good I love corn. I'm fully on board with. This is on bashing corn fashion. That's basically just popped popcorn. Writer prides. It is a crazy analysis I don't think so I. Think it's actually science so rose next time. You think you're GONNA. Go to bed hungry. Cana corn. Yeah, you heard it here on our. You got endorsements. Fashions. All right. We're GONNA. Take a quick break, but when we come back rose McGowan's last meal..

"You get a phone call local phone call. I've ever take the ten dollar a month What do you get you get extra exa one of the Pinky one of the pick that one. What was it? What was it twenty. Ten twenty two twenty not the laughter mine. Anyway stay a y'all ready for motherfucking rose McGowan. Don't be coughing on this girl. I know I know everyone's so scared and have them ask on while by myself. It's fine he all right. We're about to go live with. Motherfucking rose McGowan R. O. S. E. Mcgowan he rose. What was his red violets are blue all that's rosy should be. You shouldn't happen so are you soon? You're listening to allegedly NYC. Beer is a big big thing. You know my book is called brave. The book I wrote and people like how do you get breaking on that way and I'm like no. It means scared every minute you goddamn do it anyway. Like you know me like you when you live your life out loud as a free person as a free being you have to fight in. It's exhausting like I said but the thing is when you make them tears list a hundred times. We just have different hand. That goes around like a hamster wheel. Remind Mind Right. What if you could make an fears. Listen you're like what's the worst case scenario? I was a homeless street kit at thirteen. I was taken in duct. Then we called them drag Queens to drag queens and a an to Fernan Iran with right and these people and I I saw them have fear but lived their lives of freely. Like this is what I am. Suck it and that's that's also how I live. I'm not push back. But you know to the fearless. I was really scared for most of my career at the time when I the most money had ever made. I was so intensely scared of being homeless again. It would keep me up at night right like hunger that I had that stronger I was so hungry. And so what I did was Right down the worst case scenario evolve my fears. The worst case scenario is other than that I was like. Oh and I am. Lucky enough to not have schizophrenia. I I am home again. It's burning down hall. I wouldn't take down Weinstein. I will be able to manage it because I'm lucky enough to you know schizophrenia. Which is getting off the street. Much harder I mean. That's like the worst every your control. Yeah it's a deep fair and it's real and it's like most people are just on this package guy so how the not more and more. They're all these stories coming out about like people who are in abusive households and like usually like you know the outside world is a space for them to escape whether it's their job or like even just school kids going to school and like now they don't sort of have those outlets just send warning signals. Keeping women are going to pharmacies to like give code words to the pharmacist. Stay like I'm you know I'm endanger like help me like how do you like and usually I think like now. I'm more aware of my neighbors for some reason. I'm just more aware of the people. Go in my immediate space. I'm just like okay. I need to be more aware of like the people around me. Like how do you think like we can look for each other now that we're more isolated more than ever like? How do we how do we? I fundamentally if you're hearing something if you can hear through your walls I remember this horrible case in New York City and I I wasn't in New York then but as reading about it where this little kid died of course from abuse and it was in New York City. Kind of a fancy apartment hurt but everyone was like well. I don't want my neighbor to get mad at me. Let him get mad at you. Let her get mad at using fucking Mattie gives a shit have people been mad at you and you survived it. Yes thing all the calls. I just did Interview with pay right now even for men the help line and I think I'm not sure but it might be more queer relationships or same sex relationships by the men's hotline for domestic violence in the UK is seven team on the women's has gone up by eight and the children and right now on. Why did my album planet nine and released it? Right now was because besides the fact that his music for healing trauma literally That's why I made it in. You know it's a Thurston Banger. Um their credibly like right When you buy it I'm I wou- you make so much money in music. I made a thousand dollars on Friday but I sent that. I work with ACE. Los AND WOMEN CENTER. And it's it's a boots on the ground it primarily serves low income. Latinas and impoverishment but all domestic violence abusers human trafficking victims and their children without thousand dollars. You know why I'm urging people to go to rose McGowan on Calm and if they weren't lers to bite off band camp because twenty percent and I'm actually going to give all of it. I don't care I was GONNA say one hundred percent at this point. Not that I'm rich not that I couldn't use the money but I'm housing without thousand dollars housing. Four women in three of their managed to escape from their abusive households during coins and they now have an apartment for a month. That's amazing that's amazing. That's what we can do like little things. I know a lot of Mr Scary just just every little bit helps your you? I say something. Don't be scared exactly. Someone gets mad at you when you were wrong. Okay you Hong. Have you been wrong before? Survived it yeah exactly. Well we've been also talking a lot here about the end of the age of vanity. You know like where like I said before like all these luxuries and like like come celebrity right now. Seems so irrelevant. And so it's it's really insane. It makes me look back. What did all mean like? What was it all like now you know like? Do you think this is going to have an effect on celebrity when this is all like? I don't know when we in our new normal. I think it will affect my Factor way people. They don't worship fame anymore in the idea of it and the idea that you're so lucky if you're famous because I can say from the other side having at times been very famous when I was on charmed that was like TV crazy. "But there's a millions and millions and millions of people like me to that hold no hope and that may be escapes on one. That'll feeling of like David Goliath kind of thing. You know I can matter I can stand. I can count. I can't point and say it was you and you stole something for me and you really shouldn't enough. He and half to kind of all gone very differently. I know what would you like the long term lasting impact of this whole story to be the lasting impact is that it's really just like rape is not about sex. As at this is story of US unraveling abuse of power. I think it's revolutionaries you're saying things I can't stand gas lady not by anybody. 'cause gas lighting leads to injustice in at least a pain and death so why and for all here for only a little bit of a short time. Can't we all making a little more butter a little more better? You've really I think made a difference in that inching US toward being a little more better. Just be a little more better. That's all I want a little more better. There's a moment I'll never forget from during this reporting process you were under a ton of pressure and in a moment of a ton of doubt and I went to Your House to talk through staying in the story with you and we were both reading a lot of music at the time and I remember is Moan actually kind of only obliquely referenced in the book because it seemed I liked. It seemed so insane though to actually really get into what songs were playing a musical number in Macau real life. There was a musical resume musical and you asked to hear what I was working on. We were both writing all this music. And I was in with a bunch of producers at the time and just lay down a scratch vocal on a song called born to lie which was a relationship song. It was about infidelity. But it was also. In retrospect about all of this shit I was dealing with with NBC killing the story and the culture of silence in the media what oppression title and you played me at song that was also in retrospect seems Prussian and vehicle for what you were going through at the time called Lonely House. I stand for strength for mine for women and men to scare beast to watch him. Try To beat that beast to watch him drown the him. I speak of east to die the him I speak of told you lies of original sin and dirty whores but it's not true and never fair think who wins. When you're quiet. Thank us from. Do you still feel like a lonely house. Has any of this made you feel more heard less alone when people would say like? What character do you identify with and history was always liked? The astronaut out there on the space walk by himself is floating and one day I was. I actually one of the stars watching. The astronaut has more pleasant. And I think yeah I think I am less lonely and when you look back at that lyric to beat that beast to watch him drown. Do you think that that's happened? Did you get to quote? Beat that beast watch him drown? I think I'm watching him drown May caused an towards amount of pain. I mean dis- wreckage of so many lives and futures And relationships and joy and time he stole time you know he stole my youth my beauty all that time when whatever. I was supposed to be thinking about. I was wanting to die. How different or similar is this to what you thought might happen. How you felt things might play out when you sent those tweets. When you were writing that Song I seen everything I just never saw this part. I saw up until the news came out and then after that I was kind of a free fall. 'cause I was like Oh my God I had worked for twenty something years to get.

Natalie Portman responds to Rose McGowan's criticism of her Oscar nod to female directors

"Yesterday we talked about the fact that rose McGowan went after Natalie Portman because Natalie Portman wore a Cape add to the Oscars on which she had embroidered the names of a lot of women directors and apparently she believed were snubbed for the Oscars and rose McGowan as we mentioned yesterday called her out and said you just this lame actors he's pretending to care and you really don't because you had a production company where you don't even higher any female doctors except yourself yeah start walking your talk you're not work or super woke you're right Natalie Portman right so yesterday we were we didn't know how Natalie Portman or if Natalie Portman would respond to that and she now has and she wrote a big giant Facebook post about it are not a Facebook post I can't remember where she actually no she just made a statement to E. news and she actually agreed with me down essentially saying that it's inaccurate to call her brave for wearing that Kate she's as brave as a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who've been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks under incredible pressure it's true I've only made a few films with women in my long career I've only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times and then she lists some examples unfortunately the unmade films I've tried to make our a ghost history and she ended her statement by saying so what I wanna say is I've tried and I will keep trying well I have not yet been successful I'm hopeful that we are stepping into a new day but my Cape is really pretty like really pretty on the right car bad expense and I am so gorgeous you guys so pretty so anyway sure how that will count by handing out that's where we are

Two NYT journalists set off to uncover one of the biggest scandals of the decade

"The New York. Times investigations team. Jodi cantor was facing a new challenge. ENJ- for years should reported on workers rights and specifically women's rights companies like Amazon or starbucks. You know I had come to believe. The gender kind of can't open are a for investigative journalism that these stories were not only about women's experiences but because women are often me outsiders at these organizations. If you focused on the women's experiences you could learn a lot about what was really happening inside. It may twenty seventeen and her editor put her onto a new patch. The previous mumps has seen a slew of allegations around powerful men in the public eye allegations of sexual abuse use and harassment about bill cosby or TV anchor. Bill O'Reilly The Times made of sort of all around commitment to sexual harassment reporting and so we decided to look in academia in factories in restaurants in Silicon Valley etc etc but that was a huge patch. Cover so where do you start well for Jodi. It was with a tweet that caught some people's attention a few months early. Ah The tweets was from Hollywood. Actress rose McGowan and in just a few characters artists. It promised away into the story. The tweets was accompanied with the Hashtag. Why women don't report and read as follows? Because it's it's been an open secret in Hollywood slash media and they shame me while agitating rapist. Jody sense who the tweet might be about it. Tallied was something elsewhere somebody had given me a tip about Harvey Weinstein and said the story really needs to be done but we were really starting from nothing. We a new only rumors had no idea whether they will real or not so subtle at her desk in New York. Jody stead her computer screen. She was not a celebrity gossip tip columnist. She didn't have any connections with anyone in this world. And it's not exactly an easy universe to wonder into. I didn't know any actresses you normally emily when you're trying to get in touch with the famous person. You call their publicist or their agent. But we did not want to do that. Because with all due respect to this people they're gatekeepers and we thought they would just shut us down and a few people Jodi did manage to talk to didn't exactly fill her confidence that there was even a story here. Harvey Weinstein Though A well-known in the industry wasn't exactly a household name people had heard of his films and his company but not that many people would have been able to point him out in the crowd and Jodi kept hearing the same thing. There were some very condescending Hollywood sources who lectured us and they say things like oh Jodi the casting couch which is just a part of Hollywood and it's been that way from the beginning. It's a very unfortunate part of our industry but it's just not changeable and look you're never get your little story but if you do nobody will care. Feeling a bit stuck Jodi went to her editors they had an idea another reporter who face similar roadblocks alien her reporting give mecanical. They suggested so Jodie and I didn't really know each other She had been at the times for much longer than I had. And she was wondering what to say when you as a reporter when you do get a woman on the phone who you suspect has been a victim of of sexual harassment or assault. What you say in those first thirty seconds to try to keep them on the phone but you know I basically tapped into some of the experiences dances that I had had in that reporting which was to say? I can't change what's happened to you in the past but if we work together we're able to publish the truth. We might be able to protect other other people. We might be able to use your private pain towards some sort of constructive purpose. Meghan put the phone down but couldn't stop thinking about a work. Jody was doing so when she returned to the office after her maternity leave. She knew exactly what she wanted to do. I quickly ended up becoming her partner on the

Iran protests: Who are the opposition in the country?

"The latest protests in Iran over the Iranian military's unintentional downing of Ukrainian jetliner are different from past ask protests over rigged elections rising gas prices and what Americans liked to call voter suppression this time. The protests cover a much wider area of the country this this time protesters did not chant death to America or death to Israel. This anger was directed at the theocratic regimes handling of the missile strike. This time a president president of the United States tweeted his support for the protesters at English and Farsi and warned the world is watching Democrats. Were nearly silent about the protests even though Oh they once boldly voiced opposition to totalitarian regimes interviewed Sunday on. ABC's This Week House Speaker. Nancy Pelosi appeared to minimize the significance insult demonstrations host George Stephanopoulos asked her if she supported the demonstrations and whether it would be good for the regime to collapse. The protesters are are. I pro testing as I understand this brand of protesters about the fact that plane went down and many students were on that plane and these are largely students in the street. Come again the far left which increasingly dominates the Democratic Party predictably took a rand side against their own country. Actress rose McGowan tweeted. Dear Iran the USA has disrespected your country or flag. People fifty two percent of US humbly apologize is we want peace with your nation. We are being held hostage by a terrorist regime. We do not know how to escape. Please do not kill us. And then she ended with a Hashtag Solo Money Aig. SHUTT- responded to McGowan and many others on the far left in National Review magazine. He wrote quote while it may be tempting to dismiss McGowan's attempts attempts at whit her line of reasoning however faulty is echoed by nearly all the Democrats on the campaign trail and by virtually every Middle East specialist in the media and in academia unquote. Now why aren't the Democratic presidential candidates asked if they share such views. Perhaps it's because those asking the questions don't want to do anything thing that would harm the chances of one of the Democrat presidential candidates beating president trump in the November election. Does that sound too harsh. We'll consider that ninety. Two percent set of media coverage of the president has been negative. According to a study by the media research center could the protests in Iran. Follow the pattern of other freedom movements like solidarity in in Poland or demonstrations that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union or could they end a stalemate with increasingly brutal repression as as in Venezuela. It's too early to say but we should at least expect people who enjoy the blessings of liberty including the right to say very foolish things to support the efforts of others who want to free themselves from totalitarian oppression

Jury selection at Weinstein's rape trial trudges forward

"It is week two of the Harvey Weinstein trial in the tense moment for Hollywood and the me too movement for decades Harvey Weinstein was this towering figure in the film industry he was executive producer behind huge movies like you know the English patient and good will hunting in the king's speech most of Quentin Tarantino's films but since October twenty seventeen more than eighty women have come forward accusing him of sexual harassment assault and rape heavy winds dean is now facing five charges including rape and predatory sexual assault of two unnamed accusers and those accusations sparked the me too movement Rebecca Keegan is the senior film editor at The Hollywood Reporter she's been following the trial and he joins you from Los Angeles to talk about the implications the trial has for both the me too movement and for women working in Hollywood right now good morning Rebecca thank god so there's a ton of coverage of this trial for you what are some things we should be keeping in mind as we had to well we're just heading into sort of the heart of jury selection and I think that's where a lot of this trial will be decided it's going to be incredibly hard to find twelve people who are impartial apart about hardy winds dean in New York City because of the just blanket of media coverage it's also interesting to note that many of one's dean's alleged victims have been coming to the court house they should want to make an impact on him on jurors and on the victims will be testifying you mentioned there that some of the yes some of some of the I'm accusers have been coming to the courthouse including the actor rose McGowan this is rose speaking outside the court on the first day of the trial your Harvey no matter

The Harvey Weinstein Case

"York the trial is expected to last about two months and will be a high profile media spectacle as many are gonna be interested to see if the fallen entertainment mogul can escape any type of punishment and just as the trial began in New York there were new charges of sexual assault that were leveled against one scene in Los Angeles for a look at the Harvey Weinstein trial we spoke to Eric Gardner is a senior editor at The Hollywood Reporter winds teen is being charged with sexually assaulting two women one of the women is known me me hi my A. she is a production assistant to alleges that she wears assaulted back in two thousand and five the other woman's name is not known and she alleges being raped in two thousand thirteen additionally there will be other witnesses coming in with their own stories of being assaulted by once you know over the years there are about three or four of those women we don't know that their names or their stories but the prosecutors hope to use those stories to establish that once he has a pattern in how he approaches women and a lot of the stuff beforehand was sealed off by the judge judge James Burke so there's a lot of things I as I said some secrecy surrounding what's going on that we really don't know yet the judge wants to do a couple things first he wants to preserve the power of having a fair jury trial doesn't want there to be any mistrial on this so he he sealed off the rulings a question it also means that we can't really scrutinize the basis for a lot of his decisions were like who he's choosing to allow to testify who is not we don't know the name of one of the accusers we don't know the names of the witnesses we don't know which evidence has been precluded because it's prejudicial so there's a ton of stuff that will be kind of surprise is going into this trial and there might be things that we just never learned about trial there might be things that aren't said that we don't know aren't being said because their strategic core because the judge has ruled to allow that into the trial would mean that once you may get a fair trial whatever the verdict will be there seems to be already some skepticism to whatever's going to play out there and whether it be because of all the money and the power that Harvey Weinstein had or or whatnot there's already kind of this looming over it there's a sense of mistrust so if for instance the verdict is not guilty will people accept the judge's reasoning and the second reason that matters is because you know a lot of this Michael on appeal so you know there's a lot we don't know about the case the judge is clearly made a decision here that to preserve a fair trial require secrecy on the other hand people are going to report this reporters are on this case for two years not reporting this and if there are mistruths part of the blame for that might have to go to the judge as well because he's not letting out a lot of the information out so a lot of the misinformation could be attributed partly to the secrecy I think it's not such a great crash dance I think that's the reason why a lot of media organizations pushed to open up access to some of the pre trial hearings and but something the watcher as as this moves forward what what are we gonna learn about how the how the judge conducted himself in this case and you're talking about you know that need for this fair and impartial trial that kind of played out in what happened on Monday a little bit where the judge was talking to the defense attorney saying Hey you know you did the same view on CNN do not disparage any of the witnesses you know it's gonna be hard enough to get a fair and impartial jury as it is we don't need you going about this that way because I guess the prosecution was trying to get some type of broad gag order in the judge didn't really go for that but he did give a warning to the defense at least say do not talk about any of these witnesses judges are always leery about some of the comments that come outside the court room so that's not not such as a prize from one scene perspective his point there's been there's been a lot of bad stuff put out there in the process and one scenes lawyers just want an opportunity to rebut it and to push across their story and so they don't think it's fair if they have to remain silence while there's all this reporting out there about him as a monster and from their perspective they can't get a fair trial if they're gab and the judge has a lot of discretion he can do things as you wish us as he's been planning out this trial clearly the second he's made is to try to keep this as tightly lip as possible and now this is all going to spell out is kind of unusual there's a very high profile case ace yet the ratio of things we don't know two things we do know it is quite high compared to that the typical high profile trial and it's going to be a huge media spectacle I mean the jury selection supposed to be about two weeks the whole trial I guess they say something around six weeks as this was getting under way in Los Angeles there was two new charges against Harvey Weinstein there was a little bit of counter programming from rose McGowan I did they had like a press conference as the trial starting this is gonna be a huge media spectacle as well some of the stuff that's happening outside the courtroom is a lot more interesting right now than what's happening inside the New York court room the first week in the RP one scene trout could be quite boring just Jerry saying whether they can commit to a six week trial on a lot of juror in perspective jurors will take themselves out of pull because they you know have jobs and they can't do that but you look at what happened today in new charges being announced a Los Angeles that was alluded to at today's hearing I think that there might be a push and about whether or not some of the media spectacles that are happening outside is going to change what's happening inside so if there's any news the common in next week I think it's going to be motions based on a lot of the noise that's happening outside the courtroom every "I think that I think rose McGowan Really did take the time to process this and put together a statement that people would actually read and not write off and that's kind of. What I see there but I am, interested in the fact that it seems to be that people around. Us. Are Gento are the ones that, are telling the story and Osceola Gento herself is no doubt she, doesn't she, doesn't wanna talk because she feels some sort of, while she doesn't know how to. Deal with the situation in the public and at some point she's going to have to. Otherwise you have a career there was just know word, that she'd, been removed from his show in. Italy not America's got talent but it's like. The x. factor or something like that anyway you know if she's. Going to have a career she's going to have to account for these things you know otherwise in. The meantime in between time people just fill in the. Gaps themselves. Yeah it's. Just it is very interesting I also have to say and I found. This. Very interesting I the first. I saw that, statement was, not what was written up in the In the. Like in the tabloids and the news it was emailed to me by like a publicist so I might follow up with that publicist on that to be kind of interesting I got the whole. Thing in its entirety message from rose McGowan and just written out in the seven paragraphs and I thought that's really interesting that. They're reaching out to people truly who can report. It individually and in you. Know within its own context so.

"Book this week and he said that there are two big questions that he wanted to address you know one is sort of what are a legal and moral boundaries here with this kind of assassination in the second is is it effective yeah that's interesting yeah and essentially i mean the the sort of larger point that i took from the book is that on a tactical level you could say in many instances it was affective in the sense that after certain assassinations the number of terrorist attacks you could measure that they went down because if you take out somebody who is a high level operative and they're unable to actually help plan attacks then that will have an effect at least immediately but he also points out that because israel became so good at it must century that what ended up happening is that it was seen as a way to deal with all sorts of issues that probably needed much shh more sort of more of a political approach more of a larger strategic approach of okay well what what should the relationship with the palestinians be how should we deal with this i mean these are larger deeper issues that require more of a vision and i thank the sort of overwhelming sense that you get from the book has well look at where we are right now i mean it's still a difficult situation and i think also having netanyahu and power that's also something that he sort of suggest is essentially that israel society right now is sort of of.
