"robert lee" Discussed on The CyberWire

"It's come to the cyber wires career notes podcast brought to you by recorded future delivering advanced security intelligence to disrupt adversaries. I'm robert lee. I'm the ceo and co founder of drag us and my earliest memories aren't related to security gators at all. My mother and father were both enlisted air force folks and they ended up retiring after twenty five years of service each and My earliest memories were around planes and air force and a man. I wouldn't be death a crash. My daddy tried to push me away from that. They'll be a lawyer. Go do something different than i did. Sign you know. Don't don't join the military go. Do whatever ends me out of it. And so that's the direction i went went into going off the air force academy and and that commissioning into the service. But you know i've always liked computers at always played games and been a computer junkie but it wasn't and it wasn't as drenched in it as a lot of other people in our community on. It wasn't until i got into the air force academy that the topic of computers became interesting and it was only that they became interesting because of industrial control systems so i was into industrial control systems and working with water. Filtration units in wins. And i'm similar heck even getting Sports gaining perspective getting access control systems that were on planes that being developed by twenty two and you know the seeing the engine working like engineering of it that was my draw before computers or computer security even today look at like security as a whole year protecting data or information. It's very important thing that does not interest me at all To me the interest is in things that impact the physical world around us. It's very exciting to me. And so i joined an organization called engineers without borders and ended up going to cameroon. Doing humanitarian work there and it was in building water. Filtration units and wind turbines to store electric in car batteries to provide lights for folks so they could continue to work into the evening and be more productive and that idea not only the physical world around us but this ability for control systems to make life better for people. That's that's something really really special. We try to focus on identifying what people are doing bad and helping people understand how to defend against that while also thinking of the art of the possible so that we can get ahead of the challenge and doing that in a system of systems world where everything is connected. Everything is impactful and a lot of the security and insights and protections or whatever were developed on a system level. But the moment you start. Deploying systems of systems context like we do in industrial control systems. All that goes out the window. And we get to be the puzzle makers that sit there and document what other done and come up with new ways to do it and make sure that we're empowering folks to go keep the lights on the water running manufacturing goods producing and a accelerate run on time. I believe that anybody can do anything. I don't think you have to do one path. But i do like the idea of bringing something to the table to get started. And so that might mean maybe starting out nineteen before you even to security or maybe it means starting out in control systems of where we going security starting out and security before you go to control system security but i wanna be careful that folks that want to start out have a community and have a foundation of knowledge available to them so they don't get discouraged. Find something that drives you for pathum perspective. Maybe it's network security maze memory security. Maybe it's the physical process of you know electric transmission but do first. Then let's talk about the other piece of it and and form it together. My hope of what. I'm doing sam's what drag us doing. What our community is doing what i'm hoping as we move it into a foundational topic so that five ten years from now people do walk directly in ics security because it's more documentation a common language professionalization around it. It's more accepting and capable for someone new to start out in kind of a sandbox versus. You know no floor underneath you know ceiling above you. I think a lot about my son. And i want my son to grow up and a community that has safe and reliable electric power and water and transportation and similar. And today that would be true are actually infrastructure's pretty awesome. We have some of the most safe and reliable and affordable infrastructure and all of history. The problem is the trend that were on. That trend doesn't look so good five to ten years from now i would love to make it impossible to kill people through cyber industrial environments. I think that's an achievable goal hard. One i'm especially with the turn of the community. But i think it's cheaper.

"The social network of linked in from business professional focused to be more of a facebook and more of a snapchat tiktok or whatever the case may be. Look i got. I got into clubhouse Yesterday i don't know if you've heard of that. S to new audio focused social network. It's coming up Forgot who is part of the twitter anymore. It's just very noisy right now right. So we'll get very early in terms of It's still in us. Not everyone has it but you know it. It's i think it's still trying to find its legs and those types of things. What will stay around are the ones that have the value as you're saying folks actually putting out right relevant messages. So as long as raise the game and elevate the conversation. Because there's so many folks doing it right and you elevate the conversation. I think a stick out from from the masses. And and have some some attrition in terms of folks that were continue to spread message and be be part of the communities. I mean to me. Imagine trying to figure out like every new feature whether it's linked then or even now. Twitter has their fleet fleets fleets michael. I haven't seen one freak out yet. What really. I know. I might have done one just to test it out. So it's more like i celtics crews do not I mean to me. It just doesn't make sense like i mean. Sometimes i wonder if if they're just doing that just catch up because oh facebook instagram had. We'd better have it. I'm like okay. Well how's it work. How's it going to help others. That are using it already. I've seen other people like the lincoln there like cata either if not sharing the same views you have. It's almost like concrete. There's another thing we gotta learn. I'm looking i'm like. Why do they have. I mean you're doing the same things Within within the fees in lincoln. I mean i could see how it helps with instagram. Just because it was all pure pitchers and just want to be able to have something like really quick to try to almost kinda like adopt. What snapchat was but So i could see how why they would do that. But i mean with the business platform lincoln are. They're trying to be. How do i put this try to be cool or were they really see it. As an asset as to help be able to diversify to present the message of just something they want something quick. They don't want on a for a long time. Okay that makes sense but it's so for me. It's just a match is trying to figure out what what the purpose goal is kind of like what i was saying earlier to with the purpose when ukraine the video there. So let's not let's not talk too much trash about lincoln because we're screaming now on linked in which case yes from the team is watch and and you and i both get an email tomorrow saying you're you're in you're fine to me. I think i'll probably give them the necessary. All we gotta pull the plug in this guy. 'cause like i yeah. He lost count the number of times. I've sent messages them asking fault questions..

"Because there's actually taxing issues on your on your system. Try a lot of us. Run it up. Run e cam probably our laptops but yeah disband gets to go on every now and then from from processing and everything that the application is doing. So i'm probably going to be looking at one of the new in one mac minis. Okay pay for everyone else's christmas gifts till telling my wife that though but recently is also phenomenal because it allows you to go to multi locations that allows you to bring in multiple guests o-3 stream and streamer light up to ten people on screen a lot but at still being able to have that flexibility. And you get what you pay for. The the numbers are you. They call something. If you want something of quality you got to pay quality right i. I'm not a freemium type of guy guy. I don't even like a lot of free apps on my phone right. Rather pay to develop for their work they put into good work. I let the compensate you for time and effort and the engineering practice do that. So you know they're comparable kind of in the same from a great effective the different levels but i think next year we kind of talked about this. I'm probably going to bounce back and forth between the two platforms. The one thing that i really like about restraints that they've got analytics and man. I'm a sucker for numbers. Look i i will look at a spreadsheet and i will i will. I will do that and and see because i got a screen going over here right now. I see who's watching this on lake. Then we're doing pretty good on lake. Dan i got screen on facebook. And all of those things. it'd be aggregate all of that information right right olympics of what's the best time stream. What's the best where people coming from across the globe and things like that. That's right now. That's the one thing that's missing for me from screen yard and in fact that like the stream has not are those types of things built into like an expert or a v necks so exploit haven't used expert in a while but i i think they had i don't think they if they had analytics It's something. I don aware of but in terms of the be able to stream into different channels It was pretty decent. I mean you could. I don't think they had linked in live. But i mean you could do. You could go onto youtube facebook. Some other channel blanking on and I think it was just a matter of just..

More folks get into it so we talked lights. We talked audio. We talked video. We did talk software. let's let's talk about platforms as well. Because i see on the back your wall right there. I know european guy won't won't fall for that a you know it's funny because i've been in. I've had a foot in both worlds. The problems are always the same. It's the bear like how how what resources are able to fix it. I mean you'd be surprised. Hugh max is you know. I said i would get really strange. I tell them the types of problems. I have with a mac like you did. What but yeah same. The difference. Same with their look. I gave a steve jobs eight years of my life. I used to work for the company. I heard about avi mix after i encountered some of the tech issues that v. makes had some solutions went over there. Let's see what else this talk is. Free yeah but i. I did not feel like the learning curve obvious. I didn't want to read everything. I want to take the time. It seemed cool in the feature functionality and price is obviously obviously right but the learning curve of setting it all up and that was too much work for me. So i i didn't go install it and then literally thirty minutes after install. I hung my head. And i well well. The thing is is great. I think the challenges that because there's so many different plug ins and because such an open source. It's a little bit hard to pinpoint like where you can go if you need that help..

The Mcstay Family Murder: Setting the Scene

"The mcstay family had recently moved into their new house on on a nice cul de sac in fallbrook California Nets. At the time they disappeared. They had relocated from a beachside apartment in San Clemente. Joey and summer next day had been making plans working on home renovations when they stopped responding to texts and phone calls on February Fourth Twenty ten Joseph was forty he owned and operated earth inspired products misses a business at designed installed water fountains. It had been. Joey's dream to be self employed Loyd in order for him to spend as much time as possible with his sons Johnny h four and Joseph Junior h three. Joey's summer was a licensed assist real estate agent. She taken some time off in order to be a stay at home mother. Yeah and to work on the house. 'cause there was a lot of work to be done there. They big cleanser this house. Stay Dead Joey and summer had each been married once before when they met and according to friends they fell in love quickly and they were just crazy about each other and quite happy. So let's go into summer. Joey's history is a bit just to get a better understanding of who they were as people and who they were as a couple before this all happened. So Joey's birth name was Joseph Allen Ashley. His Mother Susan married his biological logical father. Robert Lee right out of high school but the marriage just didn't last very long at all. Susan then met Patrick mcstay. Nineteen in seventy one and Patrick was quite happy to take over his. Joey's father he and Susan married in nineteen seventy two. They were married and and Patrick adopted Joey with Robert. Ashley's permission which I found pretty interesting and with this adoption Joe. His name was legally changed to Joseph. Brian mcstay then in nineteen seventy-three. Joey's brother Michael was born. And Joey was a doting big brother. Who really love to help out with Michael's care but unfortunately Patrick and citizens marriage didn't last long either and they divorced in nineteen seventy five and and they would continue to have some back and forth issues over the years? Although Susan remarried and maintained custody of Joey and Michael the two boys did continue to spend in time with their father Patrick and for a while in his teens joey went to live with his dad in Dallas Texas. So according to Patrick the father he was is very close with Joey. A very good relationship is consistent adopted kid right right Berkeley her very good relationship. Well I mean. He came in pretty early in. Joey's life so there wasn't a lot of you know arguing back and forth about anything not a lot of that. You're not my real father stuff through now. Joey met his first wife Heather in nineteen ninety and they got married in nineteen ninety two in nineteen ninety six. They had a son now. Al Joanne Heather lift in San Clemente near the beach. Had his father's pretty wealthy Yona jewelry store in Laguna beach but he really likes Joey and he helped give his daughter just an absolutely beautiful wedding and before he met and married Heather Joe. It had several jobs he worked as a waiter and bartender. He also started his own small business designing and selling products now later. He began designing small waterfalls and fountains in his garage. He borrowed a little bit of money from his father opened a shop which he called Naturally Dana Point and by late nineteen ninety six was quite successful. He had made over two hundred thousand dollars in sales then he brought his brother Michael and open naturally DP fountains with the least warehouse for the production. So he's starting to move up a little bit here. Yes very hard worker very motivated. But Heather enjoys marriage. Rich fell apart and he found out that heather was having an affair and she had become pregnant by her lover but still he kind of blamed himself at least in part are because he'd been working a lot so he wasn't spending much time with her. He tried to work things out even told heather that he would happily raise the new baby as his own But it was too late. Heather was already in love with this other guy and she decided on a divorce but apparently this was devastating to joey. He was still in love with heather so he was pretty heartbroken and depressed any moved in with his mom and according to her he went through months and months of depression. He and his brother Michael continued to run the fountain business though and eventually they got together with a computer expert named Dan. Kavanagh Dan and help them build a website so they could begin doing their business as earth inspired products online so people could go online and order fountains so this is really opened up things for them then. Joey did meet summer. That was in two thousand four. They were introduced by. Joey's friend who was named macgyver. So I don't remember. He had enough his parents liked the TV show. It's a strange name choices in it or yeah so summer was just breaking up with her longtime boyfriend. Vic and Joey and summer's relationship moved fast but she was worried about how vic was going to react to her being with someone a new so soon she didn't own a house with vic and had to go through the legalities of getting her name off of the property in the mortgage and getting some money out of that so summer was a bit eccentric and she had been known by more than one name so this would end up causing a lot of speculation after the family's family's disappearance like what was going on with her. She was born Virginia Lisa Aranda and had also been known as SUMMER MARTELLI SUMMER ARANDA RANDOM MARTELLI LISA Aranda and Lisa Martelli Summers mom raised her and her two siblings on her own as a single mom in both California and Chicago and according to summer's mother Martelli was the surname of Summers Stepdad. Now another thing that summer did that would lead some people to question things was that she was also known to have taken some years off her age when speaking to people. But there's no evidence that she used this new birth date on any legal documents family members including her sister. Heavens suggested that her name changes were just her own preference and it wasn't anything anything to avoid any legal entanglements. She was just the kind of person who wanted to make up her own name. She went to live in California and be named summer and she did did. She did it so summer gave birth to Joey's first son Johnny in two thousand five and in less than two years later Joseph Junior was born a summer had an aversion to hospitals and both boys were delivered at home shortly after Joseph. Juniors born Joe in summer got married and this is a small ceremony in Orange County. The summer side of the family didn't attend. She didn't seem very close to family. And this worry. Joey's mother so the night before the wedding summer had called her family s and not to come to the wedding and stole his mom. Susan was never quite sure awesome redundant no but it seems like. Joey knew why he wasn't questioning it. So you know there were issues but what family doesn't have issues really. Were your those issues. His issues right and these were a little extraordinary. I guess but who knows what was going on and it was a small second marriage. So maybe it wasn't a big deal. Having family. There is a bigger deal to some people than others where I would put that as a priority. I'd like they're where my family at my wedding. Of course right. Yeah but not all. My family came to my wedding. We'll important one stood. Oh okay well. According to a lot of people though summer was very jealous of Joe his first wife Joey and heather shared custody of their son Jona. Joey's friends friends and family said that summer was very caring Jona even though she wasn't always thrilled with heather. Summer did complained to her sister. Tracy that heather would barge barge into their house regularly. You know even walking in when Joey's in the shower kind of weird and she would drop off Jona without calling ahead and just kind of expect. Expect summer to Babysit so summer was trying to get along and she put up with it at first but eventually she told Joey that she was going to have to break up and leave if he didn't set some boundaries with the ex wife now to me that seems totally reasonable for those to me too yeah. I'm not just a working or drop off daycare right. No Yeah and you're not married to him anymore. So what are you walking into the House for is if you live here. Durham my house. Yeah Komo Yard. That's right so I totally get that. I mean it's territorial thing if nothing else plus. It's disrespectful very disrespectful. To summer summer and to summer and Joey's relationship maybe not the best thing for Jona to see either possibly not

"So she rarely had to deal with his excessive flirting and other bad behaviors his time in Fort Rucker coincidentally aligned with the murder of -Tarian Corbett a nineteen year old transgender woman who was killed on August tenth nineteen eighteen ninety five. Some sources say she was a sex worker. Corbett was last seen at a nightspot in Dothan Alabama located twenty miles. South of Fort. Rucker Kerr the next morning.
