College Campuses Opened for Business, Now Scores of Students Have Covid-19

"This is on point Jane Clayson. We're talking with student newspaper editors about what college life is like in a pandemic and how the choices their schools have made are impacting students. My guest this hour Andy Thomason senior editor at the chronicle for Higher Education Andy. We were talking about the political sort of faultlines at play even in higher ed right now, this sort of red state blue state colleges in. Ryan States by Republicans are more likely to offer in person courses. It appears blue states or more online has that held steady throughout the opening here. It has but it's gotten more complex as states have to wrestle with. You know the consequences of reopening the public health numbers on campus and that sort of thing for instance, one of the first campuses to reopen the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill had faced a mandate from the system to reopen but just I think about a week Yep after they had started classes, they were forced to shut down in effectively evacuate campuses. So the public health realities are definitely altering some of. That decision making and many colleges and universities are are not messing around they're cracking down on these large gatherings large parties at northeastern here in Boston they expelled students that gathered in a room together and there was no refund on the thirty six thousand dollars tuition Ohio state issued two, hundred, twenty, eight suspensions to students attended parties a give us some other examples of the disciplinary measures that colleges are taking now. Well, much of that action has actually been predominantly rhetorical sort of warning students saying this semester if it has to end early, it's on you. It's not on us. That's the message from administrators on many campuses there have been lots of suspensions at lots of campuses It actually helps sort of spur something of a backlash among others in the higher education community saying the students didn't make the decision to reopen it was the administrators and are you going To blame students for being students when they didn't really have a hand in these plans, some observers called it hypocritical well, right and and you know I've heard both sides, is it too much to ask college students to give up so much of their college experience and on the other hand you know be responsible put a mask socially distance. I mean there are two sides to this as there are more broadly speaking in the cultural conversation as a whole. That's absolutely true and yes, you can see both sides to it, and of course, in a pandemic, we all have to behave responsibly behaviors good public health citizens, but you have to realize and recognize this occurring in the larger context of institutions that have their own institutional priorities, financial, political, and cultural, and in some cases at least students have. Found themselves in the center of that and and facing some of the consequences.

Apple Announces Watch Series 6

"So there was an apple event. Will save some of the the mechanics of the apple in for a little bit later 'cause I was fourteen fourteen it's all wrapped up into that but top line had an event you heard from us last week they managed expectations around this event very carefully well carefully after the fact. The very carefully managed their post event announcement expectations. So there's going to be an IPAD and there's going to be watch in indeed there were some ipads and there are some watches the NFC apple, one service bundle they said, all the is are coming tomorrow developers freaked out. We'll talk about those and they said there's a new fourteen in the in the IPAD air. So let's start. With the watch. That's why I wanted to call on to begin with Ab. Watched your sixty or you have one I do tell us about it. Tell us tell us about your blood so I have the product red one and it is very pretty red is very I don't know rich and complex like a like a fine merlot a good. It's a good looking read and if you didn't Give me the red one and you asked me to tell between this and the series five. I would fail just straight up The screen is brighter and it's especially brighter two point five times brighter in the always on standby mode, and that's the only discernible difference unless you look specifically at the back to look at the sensors or you know specifically that the alternator is always on So, it's you on the L. Tim Eter blood, oxygen sensor, the slightly brighter screen, and there might be one other small difference that I'm forgetting though the new chip inside it's faster. What does it mean for an apple watching faster? Is like an a a very open question. So it was ironic about that is it's the only question whether it applies to android where where West watches. They all need to be faster But yeah, it's fine. So the really the the news here is the the blood oxygen sensor. It's like the big new thing everything else are like nice pip your year updates, but the blood oxygen sensor is really like the big deal here. So Nicole, you've done a little research into its potential at. I your headline was kind of like an important statement of fact, apple is marketing. It is a wellness device not as a medical device. They didn't say I thought this was really interesting way of kind of threading the needle like you might have heard about blood oxygen during all this stuff and then like closed that loop but nickel even looking into what what do you? Think about it. Yeah. So the reason that they're talking about it as long as devices because they cannot talk about it as a medical device. Clearance from the FDA to do so. So we're sort of in the spot where. Pulse ox mentors were blood oxygen sensors are in like a weird inbetween with FDA were like you can sort of have them on devices without getting clearance me FDA. But if you're trying to do some things and you have to apple has not done that for their pulse men on the watch yet but this isn't something new to this watch like Garmon has. had a pulse talks for a while that that has sort of quietly activated their feature last year and they've sort of been interesting to people for working out and getting a sense of kind of where your blood oxygen is during exercise but they've taken on a new role during the pandemic because monitoring oxygen levels is an important way to to the progression nineteen because. People can be walking and talking and have very low oxygen levels and you wouldn't necessarily know that just by looking at them, which is unusual usually like very low blood oxygen is smash with like you're gasping for breath and you can't really walk up the stairs. So that's why they've been important recently, but the with the product is on the Apple Watch is. It's not it can't be used to actually diagnosed and it shouldn't be to do. So it is more of kind of an interesting thing that you can look at, but we don't actually know like how well validated it is against sort of more standard pulse ox limiters that could be used in hospitals or kind of more medical grade devices because they haven't gone through. The process they don't have to necessarily release some of that validation information at this point.

Texans Bid Goodbye to the LuAnn Platter: Lubys is Liquidating

"Wondering, I'm David Brown and this is business wars daily on this. Friday. September eighteenth some sad news from my home state Texas. Luby's is shutting down on the surface. It's another casualty of the pandemic. Now, if you're not a Texan or haven't spent much time here, Luby's cafeteria chain and an institution. It's an understatement to say that for decades it's been beloved at one time. There were more than two hundred. Luby's Cafeterias in eleven states. Now, there are fewer than eighty left all in the lone star state. The restaurant chains shut its doors back in. March the loss of Luby's goes far beyond the financial implications for the business itself significant enough and even beyond the jobs of its workers the liquidation of Luby's marks something of a cultural shift one that began years ago. The birth of Belugas we know today is the subject of many. Texas. Squabbles was founded when Bob Lou be opened a cafeteria in San Antonio in nineteen forty seven as the company's corporate history claims or did it get it start even earlier with cafeterias run by Bob's Ancestor Harry Lubi? In Twenty Nineteen Texas Observer Writer Andrea Valdez felt the question was so vexing that she wrote I leave the Arcane Texas history quibbles to the more about Asli knowledgeable of our readers. Regardless Luby's was one of many postwar restaurant institutions that sprouted up to serve suddenly sprawling suburbs in the late forties and early fifties. Once upon a time, the announcement of a Luby's coming to town conferred to kind of signal that this place is on the rise in meant heaping helpings of chicken, Fried Steak Square Fish Fried of course, creamy macaroni and cheese and Jalapeno corn bread all at modest prices and serve with a bit of Texas style. You want more you got it. How's your mom and him with Y'all be able to come back next. Sunday after church you get the picture. Its old fashioned meals, liver and onions and Jello cubes became both famous and famously addictive. It was comfort food for sure. But in a fast changing ever more complex world that bright red Luby's sign was. A comfort in another way to sort of reassurance that simple things endure friendly servers, sensible prices, and the luanne platter half an entree two sides in a row. When a character named Luanne platter appeared on the TV show King of the hill. It was one of the coolest knowing winks ever broadcast in the lone star state. Some might say. The fact that you didn't have to dress up for a Sunday dinner at Luby's made it even cooler until Luby's wasn't cool anymore. By the nineteen eighty s he to become the cool equivalent of driving a fleetwood Brougham something grandparents did. By the two thousands Luby's was suffering at the hands of fast casual chains serving fresher healthier food like mad, Greens, and chipotle. By last year, it appeared that Luby's could be on the way out in June. The pompous family which owns Luby's which in turn owns fudd truckers thirty store hamburger chain attempted to sell it. The takers however, last week Luby's announced that it is dissolving the chain and fudd rutgers to the pompous family plans. To return the money to investors, it could amount to some one hundred million dollars. For the moment, the website proclaims that they're still open. So. Perhaps, some might want to run in and get one last Luanne platter while you still can nothing lasts forever. Alas, Lassen it's too bad that in the case of Luby's most people are okay with.

Stocks fall as investors grapple with Fed's recovery timeline

"Are in the red Today, Let's find out what's going on. Michael Columbo is here, founder of M. J. P. Capital, author of the book Calculated Risk. Mike, What do you make of what you're seeing on Wall Street today? Good at Francisco. And thanks again for having me on. You know, we started out in the red. It looked like what? We tried to rally back, and then we so back off, too near lows in the day. You know, there's not a lot of news you guys had mentioned the first time unemployment claims number that that was really pretty much as expected, so that didn't really change things much in the market. We've you know, we've had a huge rally here, especially in tech stacks over the last few months, and this is really just some profit taking. I don't think it gets a whole lot worse. Unless we can't get any more fiscal stem was passed on, You know that that's the big issue right now. Will Congress act? Obviously it's becoming political and there's a lot of people hurting right now. There's a lot of people out of work. A lot of small businesses hurting. They need to get something done and as long as it keeps getting protracted. You're going to see more and more uneasiness with the stock market, and you're seeing it today.

"Thank you so much for joining me coming onto chat dementia. Yours really appreciate you taking time. Getting on during the pandemic and lockdown in general with the pandemic in lockdown I think as somebody who has suffered depression and obviously by now for a number of years. I'm so used to be an isolated so it's almost like on one hand. I feel like contrained for this. So when it will happen I, was just cool. Take some quite east being isolated and mainly because of my own doing however, they have been moments where it's just hit me out of the blue. And I felt quite. So panicked too anxious cheerful could be something that is triggered off the telly or something like that, and you just fight my gosh, this is really happening. Yeah. I. Found a quad roller coaster like even move cited than just just normally disorder that's a bit of a road effective. This felt like. That like an extra layer of rice, stress and everything but yeah. Okay I guess everybody should have been fitting a bit like that regardless of what they they have. Yeah I think. For the first time, they'll be a lot of people experiencing anxiety and depression. He would never have felt those feelings before. especially. Coming out vase I think it's the second pandemic presently. Let's talk about you more that you've had fascinating career. Could you please stop telling us about a Latte from cliche crtv up till today wow. Just briefly. Well, I go go band scientists say knees ache when I was about twelve years old my cousins and I, the three vessels together. We were discovered singing at a family party. We kind of decided to get into a girl band he was just very organic. And Rest Gateway of our childhoods for many as but loved it. Until we signs about the age of fifteen sixteen and we release some songs, snitch shots and we had a great time we told you flying Ritchie and we music videos and bill posters, and this was the days where there wasn't social media. Sorry. Is really difficult. Is such a shame to not to have all those videos and pictures and things like that that people have now they suits in the nineties wants the group. is about two thousand, one about yields so obsolete repented. Got Into TV I saw an advert full crtv the telly that's children's it and I was actually really depressed I. Didn't want to send a tape at done the tape at that point Sheryl Rail, which literally was vhs. And you know Cheryl's on East Coast to be a couple of minutes long. This was like half an hour forty minutes of me to to random stop interviewing people and just random things and. Sent tape off on the very last day. Just to push myself to do it really depressed because the Greek attended we'll start record sale. And that was the first time that Caridi remember suffering depression by sending the tape pain tonight was months later it fell at least I think get coal off gang final decision. So. went out to Birmingham condition and then went three weeks of you know like. X factor style will do. Things now and it was the very beginning of a very beginning of like reality. TV. So yes. So the kids the kids to me in and I became the first and only black female continuity presenter on cit in it's full forty history to date and which is a great accolade thoughts in two thousand, nine, hundred, ninety s no, which I'm sure we'll on seven and Bay botch. It was a it was a great experience. It was a really great experience, and then I go ahead taunted onto Disney and then from Disney I thin starting working for be in America's red carpet, and then I a launched B. E. T. International Kristine K., in Europe. So up in a lot I for a lot of things in and fortunately just over twenty as now I've been TV presenter Sherry it's a long journey and it should jenny. Has Come with a lot adversity, a lot of oppression. Sexism racism. The equally here I am and I'm still going and I'm grateful it comes with some great memories as well and great experiences.

Mars in Opposition

"Wadham to astronomy, cast our weekly facts based journey through the cosmos where we help you understand not only what we know. But how we know what we know I'm Fraser Cain publisher, of Universe today and with me as always Dr Pamela Gay a senior scientist for the Planetary Science Institute and the Director of Cosmic Quest Pamela. Welcome back from Summer Hiatus I missed you. Thank you. I've missed you too although I have to say it feels like we're like experiencing march. Two. Hundred instead of September at this point time has meaning it doesn't it really has no meaning. Yeah. Yeah. It's a it's a it's a snake in a circle eating its own tail. Made of everything nothing at the same time. I don't know whether I'm coming or going. The days just blur and yet time just takes forever. When do I get my vaccination? You are you are you on I was thinking about this really want to do what I want to go places and see people. That's what I do. To to have gone from having that amazing experience in January where we were together in Hawaii for the W. S meeting. And towards the end of that meeting, we were starting to talk about the news about this strange illness in China and remember the Thursday night on. Talking with a couple of my friends at the conference about. Just want to get home before the illness makes it to Hawaii. And I had no idea that. Nine mice be earlier. Still Yeah, no I guy I had my suspicions but. In. And now I you know we do feel like we're closing in now on the final stretch that more and more vaccines are coming into into the final stage of trials, and there's going to be some kind of roll out but I really hope that that herd immunity will start to get kicked in and we can start to see the end of this hopefully during this season. So we will we will and herd immunity from. Thanks. From getting sick. So we will. Exceed the end of it during the season and. Regular life will return. This season fourteen, our show is major and I feel that having a very cranky year is consistent with going through our teenage ness. Thank you bye-bye. Now this is. All right, every two years or so Mars lines up nicely with the earth it takes only two minutes to communicate with the Rovers. You could see the polar ice caps in a small telescope and it's the best time to send your spacecraft to the Red Planet and also I. Guess. It Mars opposition. Between Your horoscope your Mars horoscope is really good that other works. Maybe, that's Mars in retrograde. That none lucky time. They can happen at the same time whereas in retrograde and an opposition. Yeah. That's true. All right. So so so we're going to talk about how Mars and opposition is a really like the best time for Mars that's Mars really takes over the night sky and shows us what it's got but. Why is Marzano Position? So technically, it is that moment in time when you have the sun, the earth and Mars precisely lined up so that at midnight on earth. Mars is at its highest possible point in our terrestrial sky and if you were to look at it from space. Walk. Would they look from above you're looking down on the solar system and you're looking at? Earth Mars and the sun what would you see? Align they're just nicely in a line. And There's some years where because Mars orbit is a lot more elliptical than earth orbit that we are noticeably closer. There's some years that were noticeably farther apart of back in two thousand and three. There's a lot of Hoopla because we were than. We'd been in hundreds of years would be for another hundred some odd year. He was fifty thousand years was the closest yet had been. Two Thousand and three. And at these closest points, we are more than twenty million miles closer than we are during opposition when Mars is at its far points. So there is a substantial difference, but in the grand scheme of things. Mars is still smaller than allows to see it as a desk without. Really good binoculars or a telescope. So but just to give just to give people a sense of perspective, I mentioned this the beginning of the show it takes two light minutes to communicate with Mars just over two minutes right now we'll win Mars you not position until you can. You know you send your beep boop commands to your over and you're over goes beep boop and sends back it's commands and it's just like you're playing a video game with. Fairly reasonable times, but when Mars is. Old Dial up modem exactly. An Internet game what it gets worse right on average the a the time to transmit to Mars is about twelve and a half minutes and at the very worst when Mars is on the opposite side of the Sun It's twenty minutes. So if you want to send some piece of information to Mars, you've got to wait twenty minutes for the message to get there and then twenty minutes to come back. So. The distances are really significant.

"Sides of buildings that you would be able to use for your projector projection of the game. I would take it one step further. I would extend the connection of it to your minor league teams. Your minor, league teams don't have games going on this season I would reach out as an organization to the Dayton Dragons and Louisville bats and Chattanooga and Greenville and billings in Daytona and say we want you to be a part of our reds drive in baseball network in on X. maybe it's not every night. But on x nights we'd like you to be a part of a network of crossed our region of reds, fans and host be a host site to watch reds baseball that night. Now you're going to need for something other than a traditional drive in. You're going to need a projector. Screen you're going to need. Security offers officers in charge of enforcing health and safety regulations and social distancing in in all that stuff I'm I work in progress here. I think there's something there and yet. Here's one problem I sense right away I. Look outside and it's eight. Twenty. Six in the sun is still up I'm conceding bat as a problem. There aren't any west coast games that it would play to a greater advantage in the dark. I do know back in June. The padres hosted seven driving events. In the parking lot and that I look this up, but during the week that accommodated two hundred and fifty cars. did two concerts. They did to movie screenings. They did three high school graduations. That's what the padres did. In fact things went so well. The padres are hopeful of holding drive in baseball outside Petco Park this summer so again the rigid idea. The Angel Stadium did a drive in. For three concerts that sold out last weekend. And the angels did it in accordance with health and safety protocols and social distancing between the cars and tickets and concessions were sold in advance, so it limited exposure food was delivered to cars. Mask vendors roamed the parking. Lots, beverages and snacks say a in fact. They used a virtual restroom line. On an APP. You I I I I. Guess you made a reservation when for when you were GonNa be I'd like to make twenty reservation to be I. Don't know a capacity for Angel Stadium. Two hundred seventy four cars. All perked within the parking area adjacent to the Grove in Anaheim. Just something to ponder. The concept is they're? They're doing with Dr Driving Concerts Yacht Rock. Dave Matthews Blake Shelton Brad Paisley Garth Brooks. Alan Jackson Keith Urban. It is worked from that standpoint. Walmart's already engaging in fact. I don't know if Walmart is tied in as sponsorship with the reds to in extent whatsoever. But, in terms of trying to find spaces and screens and everything if Walmart is already partnered to create one hundred sixty store parking lots across the country I, don't know how many of those are around this area. I'd say we weren't in on that for these nights. We're going to do reds games. There's only three hundred and five dry as of this as of the the first of the year, you're only three hundred fifty drive in theaters in the US, according to the La, times so of Walmart is has created one hundred and sixty pop-up drive in parking lots. They're onto something from that standpoint. I'm looking for creative things to to rally. Reds fans in a community sense to also help the reds..

"Screen or side of a building? I'm I'm trying to get creative here. You would watch from your car socially distanced. Your speaker would be on seven hundred wwl W listen to Tommy, thrall and Jeff Brantley I. imagined scene where people would be gathering in celebrating Reds Baseball not the stadium experience that everybody wants, but imagine doing it in a in a movie theater drive in. Experience. Imagine, the honks the home runs in rallies imagine doing split the pot by phone on your phone. Throughout the night, a red split the pot for the reds, community fund or a raffle tickets for reds items. The the reds have a lot of promotions going on. That that Games are going to be played where we're talking about bobblehead giveaways and number of giveaways that don't have a game this year. Take some of those these I. Don't want to call them hot spots. That we're exempt negative connotation, but I envisioned in. It's like pop up spots for reds. Games from that standpoint and those who come pay to get in with their. Carlo to people whatever. Maybe a limited to bring a truck or something like that, but you get in you. Listen to the watch the game on the your drive in movie theater. You listen to your speaker on the side of your radio you. If you want to do concessions, you could order those on your phone. Maybe going in and as you pay on the way in they handier concessions, so you don't have to get out of the car and go to the concession stand. I'm looking ways to make this easier. You would do. Something in conjunction with starlight drive in and Amelia. You could do Hollywood drive in on Cedar Avenue in College Hill You, could do the holiday auto theater in Hamilton. That's still open. You can do the dixie twin drive in Dayton on. You could do if you get an I. Don't know where you'd by the screen for it, but you could do something in the parking lot on West freedom way between great American. Ballpark Paul Brown. Brown stadium I mean what is that lot being? He think of the number of cars. You could put in that area. You could social distancing them. You would just need something screen. Wise visually you could do in theory and that's why. I call it like the pop. You could make it. A reds drive in baseball network which would make it a community of reds fans getting out to support reds baseball in tight in with..

Not exactly any Bob Gibson's in his group, but they did win a World Series really amazing thing about Bob Gibson, by the way, since we brought him up starting in sixty-eight his e r a jumped-up a full run every year for three straight years, which sounds awful but the endpoint is 3.1. He went from 1.12 to 2.18 to 3.10. No. 23 and 7 in nineteen seventy and another season of around three hundred Innings pitched three of those in a row anyway for Carpenter. Here's a guy who's blossomed into the tutelage of pitching coach Dave Duncan Duncan. The former who has been associated with seven different side Young Award winners. Coach Jeff Bob Welch Tomar hoye, Dennis Eckersley as a player. He caught Vitae blue catfish on her and Jim Palmer. A lot of time for Dave. Duncan is part of that swinging a dynasty in Oakland. Back then he was there the bushiest most unkempt member of Charlie Finley mustache gang. It looked like a refugee from a Grateful Dead concert and speaking of a swinging age peers Pietro's through at this very Stadium barreled over a catcher a faucet the All-Star Game in nineteen seventy not won the game for national league, but it altered the course of bosses career. They don't call Pete Rose Charlie hustle for nothing bowl haircut and switch hitter wearing number 14. He settles in from the left side against Carpenter now, it takes a strike on the outside edge nothing in one. Here in seventy-five Pietro's a 317 hitter only seven homers, but $47. I'm talking about Rosa's an aggressor on the basepaths Mets fans will recall ignited that brawl against Bud Harrelson in the 73 NLCS and Shay. And the pitch coming in low, it's one and one breaking ball that time. Al Michaels was arrested broadcaster in seventy-three. He tells an amazing story about the the game after that but a Harrelson Affair or Rose was a hero with a 12th inning at home on the bus light in the shade that afternoon with fans doing lots and eggs at the Reds team bus holding up signs and said all kinds of unflattering things about 1 Peter Edward Rose Michael Rose got up stood in the middle of the aisle and that bus and yelled to his teammates. He said do-or-die boys do or bleeping died and 5 hours later. The hormone off Harry Parker didn't offer or decisive Bears game. Victor Rosa swing foul ball at the first base line. It's one and two. After the game El Michael said he asked Rose what he was thinking the moment. He realized at ball on Harry Parker was gone and he said well, I was rounding first and Shay and went around first you looked directly in a visiting Bullpen and left and all I was thinking was Boise Park. You better get Tom Hall up right now, cuz the Mets have left he's worse table and Milner coming up in the bottom of the inning and that's something on his way around First Choice thinking and for the record Sparky Anderson went with his righty Pedro borbon retired the side inorder. No Score first inning. And the pitch Heroes Wings in a deep Drive left-center field to the warning track of over the head of Jim Edmonds bouncing against the wall 10 mins will pick it up from pulling it back in. At first, second based on him coming off his head. He's got himself and walked out that invented Steve Williams right there. And then that means the guy can go and get it off that ball jumps up and over one off the wall there and roll is now dusting himself off getting ready at second base for Joe Morgan off. MVP Joe Morgan the left you hit 327 here in 75 17 homers 94 batted in 67 steals too long and the pitch to learn from Carpenter ladled in for a strike. It's nothing in one. Mentioned Edmonds and Center President Wilson's and left one in Carnoustie. O'nien ripe rolling at third eckstine and short belliard at second Pujols at first Yadi Molina doing the catching. Fitch coming it is Powell. Do I have to Plate nothing into now to Joe Morgan MVP in 75. We'll do it again in Seventy-Six Reds in a run were five or six years. They'll have the NL MVP Steve Garvey interrupting that streak in seventy-four. Now the white-haired Sparky Anderson clapping his hands in that Dugout given the nickname Sparky by a minor league radio announcer in Fort Worth Bill Hightower back in the 1955 season. Not for nothing. The 55 Fort Worth Cats had five players went on to manage in the majors. Dick Williams Maury Wills. Danny Ozark Norm Sherry on that team to Thursday runner at second. Here is a pitch to Joe Morgan a swing-and-a-miss right three sheets of breaking ball out. It's unusual more than in the regular season 130 to walk against only fifty-two strike ins but Chris Martin who breaks off a terrific looking curve and gets them. Runner at second one out now. Here's Johnny Bench. Joe 8328 home runs a team-leading 110 runs batted in ironically there really is no bench for bench built plumber Adventures back up and you hardly ever plays. Plumber did break up around the Jones now hit pit and a game against the Padres here in seventy-five, but that was pretty much the highlight. First pitch breaking ball of beauty strike one called the bench huge blocky letters on the backs of those white jerseys for Cincinnati some home five letters of bench go nearly from armpit to armpit on the back of those jerseys. Thank goodness, Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Never caught for the mid-70s read. There's a sling in foul by bench up the first base line nothing into. You know from 1970 through 76 the Reds would end up playing thirty eight postseason games bench catching in all of them and during those games the Reds stole 40 walk-in basis. They allowed to Johnny Bench one of the best defensive catchers of all time, but I'm with Bill Dickey Roy Campanella. Pitch on the way. Hey, swing-and-a-miss strike three Johnny Bench also up over a curb Bob. That's terrific pitcher lie for Chris Carpenter to out Louis still stuck there a second here is George Foster. 300 hitter right on the button twenty three home runs 78 runs-batted-in. "Now. Follow me here. Don't yell at me. Here's an idea that came to me and I'm kicking around ideas. The last couple of days is compiled all these different stories and articles and quotes about how things might look differently how they will be presented differently from a listening standpoint and a viewing standpoint and I thought well. Let's just play it out if Major League baseball doesn't have fans of a stance at least early. And you heard in. You heard me read in the in the piece from USA Today. There's there's not a it's not a given that broadcast teams will travel to road games. That, they may do games from studios. That's becoming more common in sports anyway. What if? You ready for this. What if? Say if there's no fans in the stands or if Tommy Thrall and Jeff Brantley don't go on the road to broadcast. What if Tommy Thrall and Jeff Brantley. Called Reds Games. From, the holy grail banks. Hang on. You take the stage where we've done bengals line, and they do everything, but you take that stage. You move it off that wall back towards the door. You set up Tobby Jeff. You've got all the TV's at the holy grail. You're obviously going to have to socially distance. You're crowd in the holy grail. But you make. You make an effort to connect with the. Reds, Community Fund and you say. Ten dollar cover ten dollars. Each ten dollar contribution goes to the Reds Community Fund and we want you to be a part of our air quotes here our studio audience. To Watch, the reds game up on all the big screens while Tommy and jeff broadcast game. I think he would get behind that I think the Sheriff Big Day would get behind that. I think. Tommy and Jeff would get behind that imagine the difference between sitting in an Empty Stadium, broadcasting a baseball game or not going on the road to broadcast games and instead sitting. I don't know where. Maybe sit this studio and watch it off the monitors in call instead of that put them at the holy grail each home each game whether it's a homer road game under these circumstances you would sell tickets for the in imagine the crowd interaction in and around Tommy Jeff is they react to a Suarez homerun. A nick cast the homerun diving stop, and they would be raised up on that platform that stage, basically in the middle, pulled off the wall of where it is right now in the middle of the holy grail like surround sound fans. Calling the reds game. The reds are on the radio live from the holy grail banks Thom Brennaman Jeff Brantley Coal Reds baseball surrounded by socially distance reds, fans who are they're eating and drinking consuming? Beverage of choice and reacted we. We talked earlier. What what's going to be the biggest thing without fans will man. What's the reaction going to be? There will be no reaction on that triple on that relay play on that initial ball off the bat where you rise up out of your seat. Does that have enough to the strategy that pitching change boo. Imagine the Cornucopia of Fan Reaction Milling in and around Thom Brennaman and Tommy Thrall and Jeff Brantley raised up on a stage looking down to a socially distance crowd of specifically reds fans because they've made their. Contribution to the Reds Community Fund inner join the food presented by the Holy Grail Banks I said this was a brainstorming session and I think that's a damn good idea. A, your calls as we continue I've got one two three four. I've got five lines open. Five, one, three, seven, four, nine, seven, thousand I would be in. I would the inside pitch from here and I would I instead of going to the stadium I go to the Holy Grail I. Give Him my ten dollars I'd say hey, tell him I told Charley Frank Charlie Franks. Hello, and let's do this. Can you. Can You Tummy Thrall? Jeff Brantley. Walking into the place crowd goes nuts, but on the headphones good afternoon, everyone and welcome to reds baseball tonight from the holy grail banks. We Watch with you and call the game and you are the crowd reaction. Your reaction as we continue to. We check news carrier sports talk presented by Kelsey. Chevrolet seven hundred WWL W..

"Are putting in long hours around the clock to best serve our community so the next time you're in schmucks tell them thanks and that you appreciate them let them know how much we appreciate their efforts because we will all get through this together. One of my favorite people in the business of Baseball Chris Welch former Major League pitcher and now longtime analyst with the Cincinnati reds. He also runs a website. That will not only teach you about the rules. But bring you in. It's interactive is well. Chris is always I miss CNN. It's great talking to you but Hopefully we'll see each other in person fairly soon. How you doing? I'm doing great Danny. You know we were. We were scheduled to to meet up on opening day in Cincinnati. The parade the cardinals and everything else. It's it's one of the big match ups that I always love on the reds played cardinals because I get a couple of teams that I really like and get the hang around us so Thanks for having me on today. You got misplaced golf with the on opening day and I really miss seeing what this rivalry have been like in twenty twenty and maybe we'll still. We'll have that chance. But what were your expectations for the reds coming into the season? Wow very high expectations you know the ransack thank The Front office says took a bucket thereafter and said Hey. We don't think that we're going to have a better starting pitching rotation in the next few years than we do right here in two thousand so the winner of Two Thousand Nineteen Two thousand twenty one. They decided to go for a lot of money. More than one hundred and sixty million dollars in free agents They made some trades. They decided to bolster their offense. A little bit. Bring in guys like Mike Nicasio to to get already pretty decent team over the edge and I think that was part of it then. I think the other part of that. They see the window of Joey votto being a high quality caliber possibly MVP type player beginning to close enclosed quickly. So you want also take advantage of that so I think everybody in. Cincinnati had great expectations for this Auckland. What did that line of look like Especially towards the tail into spring. When you're playing your regulars and you're seeing Mustafa's Kosta Janos Suarez veto some of the others. I know there's some injuries mixed in there. But you didn't have the full complement. But what was it looking like as you're heading towards That Opening Day. Matchup with the cardinals. You know the interesting part of the lineup is at the very top for me. Because res- went. They signed their first ever Japanese. Free agent Akiyama who's left handed hitter not a big power guy but he was always very good on base percentage player over Japan and I think that that the reds thought his skill set would play pretty well as rates in the same way. It'd probably platoon little bit. Maybe with a young player name. Nick Zell Dick. You gotTa look at him. Last year. He came into camp injured with a shoulder into that. You know he should be ready to go right now so. I think that that would be the top end of the lineup. Joey bottle would probably be in the number two spot. And then from there it would be this learning Mustafa's past the however. David Bell wanted to play the lefty righty matchups and I think the good thing for the Red Sox fans standpoint is that they've got some firepower. They would have some threats in that lineup as far as power hitters. All the way down to the you know. Probably the number seven spot in the eight spot Freddie Galvez. Who's going to take over shortstop on an everyday basis the guy that switch hitter you can expect fifteen or twenty out of him so. I think that there was a lot of excitement to go along with good pitching that they were going to see some homeroom ball set to what would rotation look like a you know. When you think about some of the the big names that you have coming back and guys that really Kinda reclaim their careers in Cincinnati. I thought you're pitching was going to be really improved this year. You know the pitching is going to be improved because you have veteran status pitchers who are now reaching their peak age wise. These guys are thirty five years old. They're twenty nine twenty eight twenty seven one and one a. whether it's sunny gray or or Trevor Bauer no Trevor Bauer. I'm a steal. You know so you know. Casino was was the at the start opening day starter last year. Trevor Trevor Bowers on board obviously sunny grey had he got some cy young award boats and so I think those top three or guys that they really think going to be They would keep the red some have any kind of losing streaks which is always a real problem on ballclub doesn't Excel Wade. Miley was signed as a free agent. left hair first time at a. Red Square takes him. That is very exciting. And he kinda you go one through one through five in that rotation and now you're looking at is the some of the guys who were in the rotation last year the year before our Tom Alley for instance pitch pretty well. Times LAST YEAR. For the reds. Probably looking at going to triple a long time for that kind of depth that they came into spring training. You know looking to cut pitchers off their roster rather than at pitchers to the rotation. How I'd would it have this year? And hopefully we'll we'll find out but to not see Marty Brennaman in the radio booth in a Cincinnati reds game. How how odd would that have been Chris? I think even more odd for you would be not to see him in the media dining room because a lot of people don't know this. I think the best forty events in my day sitting with having because this Guy Holds Court. He has great stage presence. He loves you and gets on you all the time. Get BILLIONAIRE IN. Turn a little bit you know. Sometimes they hurt. But that's the beauty of it though. It is the beauty of it and the guys completely unhinged out what he's not on the air when he's the air is one of the best officials ever caused a terrific reds fans are going to really. Miss Him. I think. Because it's you know little by little the fabric of the game is changing and when you lose icons like Marty Brennan Menendez in the Radio Boots. You know you just don't have you. Don't have the comfort a turning the radio on and hearing that that old leather shoes that fits so well kind of voice things move on certain late but they're they're certainly going to be a big void. I want to get to your site here in just a moment but a final question about the reds David Bell and his long history with his family with the reds and the city of Cincinnati. What would it mean on a personal level David Bell to win in Cincinnati and to do it with the reds? What what do you think that would mean to him and for the city and the fan base? I think it would mean everything for him. Obviously I mean he's always been a guy even going back to the days when Dusty Baker was managing. Jesse told me one time he goes. You know who's going to succeed me as manager David Bell that time David Bell is managing the double eighteen for the reds. In the meantime he had moved on came to the bench coach. The cardinals he. He's well respected his father. Buddy Bell is in the Reds Front Office document. Everything plagued the front office operative coach and so on So the Bell family very well entrenched Cincinnati. It would be a lot. I mean Cincinnati's allow like Saint Louis. You really proud of your own when they do something fun and great and I think that that's how they would appreciate it bill. The one thing that I would recommend. You didn't ask this question but I I think the one thing David Bell you learn as a manager is you have to sometimes follow your own instincts a little more than you think you do Everybody can manage with the stat sheet. Anybody can manage now with all the analytics that the science apartments and the data departments are giving to the manager. But I WANNA see him. Take that one step forward where he begins to manage people a an and situations in putting guys situation or they can succeed by using his gut feel a little bit because he's got a great sense of baseball where he knows the game. He's got a great sense of being leader.

"Back in a little bit of Elvis music right there course they yes you know much fun it is talk about that but Hey let's say hi to Mike is Mike wants talks more sports might die yet let's got here on the board you want to maybe talk Reds and you want to talk about Joe burrow and I guess the possibility him coming here to Cincinnati which one you will start off with I'll probably bring with the rug out of but do you think Joe burrows gonna be a new franchise quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals technology think of small hand really matter and thirty day they're going to want more than seven games or less well I don't have a crystal ball here now I got magic tea leaves because I'm just cooking Amman up below honey in there so I have some the sip on but as far as the bangles go and and this deal about his hands being small there is another story it was put out I haven't had actually had a chance to go through it I definitely think Joe burrow has an opportunity to be a hell of a good quarterback is you get to be a franchise quarterback well you know there's a lot that goes into it because I don't care if you're Tom Brady or Rodgers stall Boker Terry Bradshaw if you don't have an offense of line blocking for you don't matter who in the hell your health bar you can throw the football or what have you you're not going to succeed so that's number one you got to have a live now number two you got to have some pass receivers number one that are afraid to go across the middle the can actually catch the ball instead of running some forty yard dash should for three or whatever you see it catch my drift so if you don't have those two piece of the puzzle it don't matter how good or how much talent you got em all right wrong no no no that's definitely right so you know so there's going to have to be some more piece of the puzzle but do if you want to ask me do I think Joe over its got to be drafted number one and be right here in Cincinnati I don't know because there could be a lot of horse trading going on at team like the Bengals that made you know so much new talent and a lot of different spots a lot of people are speculating that it might be advantageous if they got blown away on a deal to a trade the number one draft pick because they still have a good opportunity to pick a top notch quarterback maybe not necessary Joe burrow because the part one hang around but you know Miami Dolphins supposedly they've got the three number one draft picks that they might be willing to to work out but that must mean that they think pretty highly Joe burrow I can't wait like skyline all right here while I put question better at eighty seven went above or under why well I would say right now it's it's a little early I'd say right now the smart bet would be to say under but I think if the things fall right the Reds have an opportunity definitely compete for the the pennant in the division and you know it's going to be definitely a a a tough division it always is you know Saint Louise got lot of talent this year you can't you know sell the the cubs and no more Milwaukee down the river they've got an awful lot of town of Pittsburgh might be a team that might not compete but there's so much talent they're in they tend to beat up on each other but I think that the main thing is let's see how the pitching staff comes together and see if we can get some more guys that are a little banged up and beat up and see if we can get about their spring training and that's why I got a list of these preseason games in and see what the cowboy because he always does a real good job analyzing the team so that's kind of like my and I haven't followed it real closely right now I've been busy doing some other stuff with all the political stuff but does that make sense to you about the Reds nah you know just forget all that political you know it just looked on thinking that a baby you know okay well why don't we all love walking the red bangles in the we're so happy to have you guys Hey listen I appreciate the call and have a commentary called talksport's anytime let me say hi to day because I'm not sure Dan is a first time caller Danny is says here you want to talk about the Roger stone book you're through think stay for take my call any go go Richards we've we rooted for your Cincinnati Reds here Oklahoma since the red machine days only but the Reds fans are all over the country no question about that we are the nation's station and home in the sense that a Reds and proud of it here he should be I before I wonder if your question about Roger stone since you know we have this you know pending you know possible situation with corona you know spreading throughout our country but if for you know have have we entered into a frog in the president did the right thing and whenever he you know stopped all flights out of the China when he did but what about now that we have of the situation on South Korea you know since it's really spiked there in Italy have we really decrease the number of flights that have the that still flying to the US from like South Korea and Italy well you know I that I have and you know the R. X. for around here I I don't know if he's talked about that broach that subject because that's all the kind of like new breaking stuff Jay Ratliff United saw on with Mike McConnell every morning you know like I think he's on like four times he's R. AV H. ften expert I could maybe reach out to him but it's gonna be troubling because if you have all these other countries that it's apparently spreading too big time and we are having international travel even though I think Donald Trump did the right thing up put in a a curtail on the travel from China and course he got criticized up and down the radio dial by the Democrats are left and right now they're kind of you know taking it back a little bit I guess maybe the fake news media is not it's gonna be real interesting because if this thing keeps spreading and spreading what he had to shut down the borders of one hundred percent never goes you know all your tourism business and what effect the airlines of course the stock markets are already gone in the tank so there's a lot of ramifications that's why this thing's gonna be thought out but it's got to be attacked and I thought Donald Trump said that he the Chinese leader was cooperating in a and B. in asset but then people saying that there still be real secretive I don't know so I don't know which one of those two is true right now okay well you know speaking of the southern border have you noticed that the Democrats from there either interviewed or even probably more importantly with these recent Democrat debates have you heard they they never expressed any concerns with but the drugs that pour no no no they don't express no concern what about all the violence comes in from south of the border yeah and not not withstanding even the disease like you were you know talking with the last caller I mean they either they should be vetted for diseases you know the ones that are allowed actually now you know what this corona I'll tell you one other last thing about the crew and before I ask you about stone and that is I really think this hello are you a brand new virus just out of the blue attitude just pop up out of nowhere and and I think the timing of awful shift back because you know when when Donald Trump he campaigned on you know even you know evening up the the playing field with China and from these other countries like Mexico and I and I know the Chinese hated that you know the Chinese government that he all he wanted to do which she has done is just you know make the the rich you know art but they're trading practices on a level playing field and I cannot help but wonder you know if this I mean again if this virus existed from the beginning of time one down twenty twenty well there's art here maybe I guess kinda hanging around I'm not gonna put words in your mouth of that supposedly there's there's some sort of bio weapon tree place in that same area China where this a corona virus his I guess originated from are are you indicating that you could there be something going on to something the skate like some the conspiracy people are talking about in that might really be how this thing got these started as opposed to the the food that the people have been used to eating there and suppose I've heard some doctors say that this is like a strain often has been around for a long time yeah hi I just got it in it very well I'm not saying I mean who who really knows but I just I just think the timing is a little suspect and you know despite their eating habits will they've they've they've had those sort of eating eating haven't seen on that part of the world for as you know for for years and years right right and so where does this thing just coming now all of a sudden you know even if it naturally occurs in nature and it has for the millennial why now why you shouldn't give down twenty twenty because look what happened to the stock market because of you know people see known companies you know the trading you know they they have fears of the vehicle be a big slowdown and so you know in fact one of the or the vin list one the prominent Democrat said here's another angle we can use yeah Hey Danny I got to your brakes on a push on hold but let's do it we have taken a little short.

"Into the Reds plans now and going forward does he fit into their plans now and going forward more on that I have my favorite five favorite UC basketball players and five favorite Xavier musketeers of all time we'll talk about that a little bit later on in the show seventy one years ago tomorrow was the opening of the Cincinnati gardens it is my Val every year to remember the Cincinnati gardens we will share stories as part of the off the beaten path topic coming up in the eight o'clock hour I have moments and memories and stories about the Cincinnati gardens on the blog right now also the national media on the bangles and a listener last week who caught the UC Memphis game on seven hundred WLW from Venezuela all of that in blog form take a look at it so what's new Reds raids early and often and then we'll get into some college basketball the seven o'clock hour the off the beaten path topic in the eight o'clock hour but if you like talk and read to this would be the time to do it and I was it was it declines on Monday in fort Wright I was at the end K. U. coaches show take it in the show and talk in sports and in in a Reds fan said to me he said Hey should I be optimistic about the raids this year and I said heck yeah if you look at me and said that's what you told me last year Eddie I kind of paused for a second he says that's what you told me the year before if I remember in the year before that in my first response was well and then I kind of pause and I thought about I said well I have told him that for the last number of years they've had six consecutive losing seasons since there was a real sense of excitement in a legitimate chance to play winning baseball yeah I go back to last year and I remember how we felt about this point it the the national media had made the Reds one of the the the buzz teams in baseball remember people teams were laid out nothing was being done in free agency and the rates have gone out and brought in we can camp in warding got rid of Homer Bailey and they traded for Sonny gray and they traded for Tanner Roark in there was excitement and then they started the season one eight but this feels different does it not now I know my my my rule of thumb every year at the start of the season is it can't be optimistic at the start of the season wife to be a fan of any team Reds Bengals you name the team I always said if you can't be optimistic at the start when your team has even won or lost or even played why would you put the energy in the investment emotionally financially into rooting for that team I N. yet I will admit over the last six seasons it has been difficult we've had to for lack of better phrasing we've had to suspend reality because I I think in our in our hurts deep down we looked at this team the previous years we thought man there is no there or we did this well you know if this goes right in this goes right in this goes right in this guy has a career and this guy has a career year maybe even that guy has a career then there might be a chance we had to create reasons what we what we had to make up reasons are head to be excited we had a trick or mine it alternately as it played out the raids were a losing team for each of the last six seasons but this time around this offseason bringing us to this point on the verge of spring training games opening tomorrow does not this fuel differently is there not a different vibe I know there is one for Joey Votto is talk with Jeremy row from fox nineteen to win a chance to catch up with Joe yesterday listen to what Joe he said about the difference from previous years to this year you know some years you.

"Plenty of baseball news to get into on a Monday including big signings by the Cincinnati reds while he big signing that's on top of other signings they've made throughout the offseason the busy offseason in Cincinnati reds history will take a look at the central how that division looks like plus a lot of other news to get into throughout the world of baseball. We are running towards spring training. Starting really exciting. And hopefully we can get this astros astros cheating scandal behind us and move on from it but I would be mistaken. Remiss add in other adjectives if we did not start the show with the tragic news of yesterday Shocked the sports world that shocked the world in general the passing of Oscar winning NBA Mvp Future Hall of Famer Los Angeles Laker wonderful father. Kobe Bryant at the age of forty. One I'm sure you've heard the story don't need to go through the details but I wanted to spend the first part of this show today remembering what Kobe Bryant was who he his and just discussing this for a little bit because it's important and so Often in sports we escape things that are going wrong with the world. They don't matter here. I don't have to talk about them here. I don't need to talk talk impeachment trial or politics or the economy or the stock market. Here I don't need to talk about real things here. Just a ball. A Bat runs victories. Losses things that matter yes but truly at the end of the day. They don't yet when something like this happens. The real world collides with the sports world extremely tragic way and it saddens dances and reminds us of the things that truly matter life like our loved ones our family. If you're a parent your son or daughter if your son or daughter your parents your girlfriend. Your boyfriend your significant other and I think what happened. Yesterday reminds reminds us all to hug the ones next to us. Show them that we love them. Remind them how much they are law because we never know when it all all comes to an end because Kobe Bryant a guy with so much potential in front of him even though you felt like you already showed all. His potential in the sport of basketball is no longer with us and I'd never really understood celebrity deaths and why people truly born person they had had never met never talked to never shaken. Their hands were hung them and I never really understood those and and why people grieved those deaths until yesterday. 'cause my mom always used to tell me a story about when she found out about how. Princess Diana's death and how that was the same day she found out she was pregnant with me. And that I would eventually Ashley becoming into this world and on that same day. She tried to inform my grandmother that you know I was GonNa make get into this world that I was going to be thing. She was going to be a grandmother that that's what the news was supposed to be and yet she couldn't get it out because before she could even say anything they were in tears over the news of Princess. Diana's death tragic death and when my mom told me that story I never really understood it really. I thought isn't your life a little more important than somebody else's but yesterday I understood it fully because when somebody somebody that has so much impact on so many people that matter to you so many people that you have watched so many people that you've grown with when when that person connects us in a way that is undeniable crumble up a piece of paper shoot it at a trash can yell Kobe. When he defines a generation of sport when he defines generation of culture? It hurts because it feels like everybody. Everybody lost a piece of something and there was no time to prepare for it. There was no story that he's getting sick. There was no age that now he's an old. There was no lead up. There was nothing this came out of absolutely nowhere and it came in the middle of what felt like was going to be an amazing next ten to fifteen years of Kobe Bryant. It came in the midst of him producing one of my favorite sports analytic. Show detail it came in the midst after dear basketball and him winning an Oscar Oscar him and his daughter on TV and you clearly saw Kobe. Developing into this man to this role model to this person that Wanna be this person that slave away and dedicated himself to a craft and yet was able to let go and move on and transition in becomes something even more to define culture and win something like that was taking away and I saw the reaction from everybody and I could feel it. Group could really feel it and felt like a true loss to me and I'd finally understood why my mother and my grandmother held each other crying over the death of a person they never do because yesterday and all I could do was just cry because it was touching it was awful. It was tearjerking because it didn't need to the happen senseless pointless tragic but I want us to remember what Kobe Bryant wants. A cultural icon. He was a legend a creative savant. Both on the basketball floor in his life. I mean you can see the creativity on the court as well as in his his creative adventures. You could see the way. He got off a shot the way he made. It looks smooth the way he could shimmy shake spin and still deliver a jumper without you. Blocking it was the same way in life he could shimmy shaken spin around five languages. Shimmy shaken spin a movie script. A detail right. Those things connect and Kobe showed US something. So special that the unbelievable dedication into a craft the unbelievable dedication to an art the Mamba Mentality the unbelievable focus on achieving something on driving to be great at to getting up every day in working at your craft and not asking for somebody to hand it to you. Were expecting it to be handed to you but working for it and outworking your competition showing up the gym two hours early making king sure your workout or your grind or whatever you do to get better is somebody else's full day you're warm up. Is Their full day just out. Working People just being unbelievably dedicated to something in showing that is extremely important but also showing the ability to move on the ability to let go the ability to transition the ability to understand when you've failed when it's time to move on and unfortunately it's time for the world to let go of Kobe. Bryant taken from US far too soon and I can only imagine what else he would have accomplished in his life. And it's sad that this has happened to unbelievable tragedy. It's a tragedy that I will remember forever where I was when I found out. It's a tragedy. I'll tell my kids about and I'll also tell my kids. Every good thing that Kobe Bryant did everything he inspired fired me to be everything. He inspired people around the world to be Kobe. Bryant should be and will be across sports baseball soccer. Her basketball everything should be remembered forever. And it's unfortunate that this all had to happen but it's important to realize that an event like this shows us. The power of sports shows us that one person one one shot one frame of mind one saying can be repeated and believed in by people across the world that one game it can be seen by millions by hundreds and thousands of fathers and sons and mothers and daughters and people can connect over those moments and not only do. They remember member watching Kobe but they remember watching Koby with their dad. They remember watching Kobe with their brother. They remember watching Koby decided to go out and take a few extra shots. Were they remember Kobe talking about his dedication at work and deciding to get up a little early that morning and do a.

"Six thirty news is seven minutes away I bring up the the Reds being desperate in in large part because they they should be I I hope they are they should be because you just you you can you can offer a seventh consecutive losing season in and expect people to continue to buy in what you're doing the the beauty of last year's people jump back on board to it a very large degree attendance was up ratings were better interest was higher but you've got a double down on that now the people paid attention again yet you have to give him a pay off in the pay off can't simply be one suit fund you know seventy five win here it's it's got to be it playoff baseball championships the hope of this team perhaps you know being in the World Series so here's why I bring this up the rest can still get free agents threads will still get free agents and maybe they get McCaskey on us and there's also some some big names that are being kicked around terms of potential trades Kris Bryant the cubs Mookie Betts from the red Sox it's been some conjecture that the Houston Astros but would be willing to to perhaps deal Carlos Correa those are all super star caliber players Mookie Betts is one of the best players in the game Kris Bryant's in his prime coast raise a former all stars a former rookie of the year he's a he's been one of the best players on arguably the best team in baseball over the last three years notice I said arguably so make maybe the Reds can get involved with those guys it's going to cost a lot if you're doing business with somebody who's desperate what are you gonna do you're gonna Jack up the price and so cute to me is is is kind of a conundrum is the right word but I use it anyway here's kind of the conundrum you're you're desperate for a back you're desperate for outfield offense you you're desperate for somebody that can upgrade your hitting right you're the wretched Dick Williams you're trying to find offense and a team says well he yeah he Mookie Betts let's just use him for it for the sake of example for I will give you Mookie Betts guess what we want Louise Casteel that's why I'm starting it it it is prime all star top of the rotation guy who is not going to be a free agent until twenty twenty four yeah if if I'm going to give the read something of value that's what I'm starting with the conversation starts with him now if you're like me I really don't want to part with Louise Casteel maybe it doesn't come to that but let's face it is as we crossed every name often free agency and we want the Reds to get more and do more chances are you have to start looking at trades ends in a wallet it's fun to flip the corpse of a picture like Homer Bailey for for a living human beings let's be honest yes he'll play doesn't have a job right now and Matt Kemp sort of baseball right now Alex was a free agent in cow farmers you know a bit player who can play a bunch of different positions the Reds didn't acquire for like in their prime superstars coming coming off great years they got from a good team expendable parts it's cool when you make those kind of deals those kind of deals typically don't vote you into the ninety win ninety five win range you've got to go get like A. listers the right to try to get some A. listers Dick Williams is so we've been in conversations with every free agent available by the way the cast Yanis is doubles machine and just absolutely turned on for the cubs last year when he was acquired from the trade in fact against the Red Sea was fantastic and maybe you could get him in free agency but if you can't and you start crossing off names and you have to go to the trade market if you're desperate team and the other club knows you're desperate the asking price is going to be really really hot and for me it's going to start with Louise Casteel it will include Nicks and sell it will include perhaps hunter green the bottom line is this whether or not it includes all of those guys are one guy more than the other no one's going to give you something of of major value and and by major value I mean controllable in their prime star for you know some random prospects the don't have very high ceilings or for for some guys who have been in the big leagues for awhile that have no upside so the question then becomes Hey are you desperate enough to deal guys like the players I just mentioned if you do are are you really just plugging one hold that opening up another basically a game of whack a mole end date to me the be the question would be yes I mean think of all the hard work that this front office has done good hard work this front office has done to to repair its pitching staff and they've been in that the conversations for some starting pitchers mentioned Tanner Roark mention Zack Wheeler there's some chatter out there that maybe the Reds are gonna try to get Dave price and that's that's a really good thing and the more pictures you get the more willing you are to deal someone else and you always are we looking to deal from a surplus but this franchise just went through a dramatic transformation within the last really twelve months where they had no pitching and now they're starting rotation as of today is pretty much set but after all that hard work are you really willing to deal from the top that rotation or let's say it's Sonny gray Sonny gray somebody I would be interested in it's gonna make around ten million Bucks over the next three years controllable for three seasons and it really doesn't cost comparatively speaking that much money again though you are plugging the hole maybe in the outfield perhaps somewhere else in the infield me behind the plate but you're opening up another are you handy swaras who don't love but if I'm another team I'm going okay your third baseman who really doesn't cost that much we think about it think of the coin that third baseman like Anthony ran donor getting verses the coin that are you here as far as getting seven years roughly sixty seven sixty eight million Bucks in his prime coming off nearly fifty home run seasons it's gotten better defensively years of team control that would be somebody I would want so we all want the Reds to get better but I think we're to the point where we want to read to get better with players that can really make a difference I think that the thing though is the thing you have to ask are you willing to give up players that could also make a difference and are you all setting what you game but what you give up I don't know the answer I don't know the answer because we're not there yet we haven't seen what a deal actually looks like but the longer free agency yields limited results the more you have to turn to the trade market and the more desperate you are in the trade market the more teams are gonna ask for ransom in return it's kinda hard to win when you have to give up a ransom in return your thoughts are I had five one three seven four nine seven thousand ends one eight hundred the big one pound seven hundred free call AT and T. also you'll hear an NFL hall of Famer offering very very very simple solution to this whole Spygate to thing end the onus maybe it shouldn't be on the bangles this hall of Famer says it is and I agree what do that after the six thirty news with Matt recent sports talk Malik or for last McAllister on seven hundred W. out.

"Outward apparently loved his time in Cincinnati. And that's a guy who I think. Obviously he's not going to a say Noda more millions of dollars from somebody else To come back to Cincinnati but I think the idea of him kind of some unfinished business there. I think he'd be very interesting. Asian coming back on a one year deal with certainly round out The best reds rotation since at least two thousand thirteen Back when the Johnny Cueto. Mla Toes and Bronson Arroyo Royo And one of the better ones in the National League so yeah I. I could certainly see them doing that. And I think that's something that they will address if for no other reason that there are. I'm not even sure I'm trying to think I'm not sure there's been a deeper pool of really good. Starting quality. Starting pitching teaching options on the market is our this winter And I think the reds will certainly try to do their best capitalize on that. Yeah there's a ton of them and one name that throws up for me is another former red sox or gallic report solo. Just the guy's going to go and then throw one hundred. Eighty two hundred innings obviously didn't have the best end of the year last year. But you got you could definitely benefit from guy. I jame shields report sell those names. You hear all time that can throw two hundred innings and just help out someone's hurt help out if you're just waiting for someone to you get called up and there's a lot of like in between things that there are serviceable guys that you need to eat innings. That aren't that bad on the CAP. Oh Yeah for sure that was ten Aurora for around the perfect. It was great I loved him. I thought he was perfect. Yeah he was these. The the quintessential number three number. Four Starter Taghi. No He's going to give you a six and a half innings or six the third innings averaging time out there Yeah you need that that that that saves you bullpen. That is time for younger guys I think that's absolutely something that they will look into. A heck you get tired for tears and twenty million Do that why not go do that. And then Bauer and discover off the off the payroll after this year and suddenly Rox Rox till hair. You've never through starter behind guest you grade for twenty twenty one and he helps you out an extra as well so yeah. I think the red. You're going to be opportunistic about that. I I mean. There's there's so many good pitchers out there. This particular offseason minute the reds they're gonNA walk away with somebody I don't think dedicate a lot of payroll to l. but they're gonNA walk away with somebody out there for sure all right so we cannot not ask about The Bauer trade are other coves. Covers the Amarillo. Emmerdale of sod Pu poodles and covers Taylor Trammell. So he'll want us to ask about this. But what were your thoughts on the Trevor Bauer. So I've got I've got to put my out reflective goggles on this for a minute So we've talked about data Gorey's talked about yes. migraine doll The last reds free agent contract of note that they gave out was Ryan Ludwick for two years and eighteen million dollars in two thousand twelve before that it was Francisco. Cordero I think two thousand seven four years in forty six million dollars and that's the biggest Asian contract they've ever given out so it has since for the better part of a decade and a half the idea that the redskin ever address any of their major needs. Free Agency has been nonexistent. Like we haven't even written about a free Target for them in six years because they just haven't done now they've expressed very often this particular winter. How important twenty twenty years and how they are willing to jump back into the free agent market which is a whole new territory for them and for us so when I saw that they traded told you about their top prospect futures gaining women? Vp from twenty eighteen. I think at the time number thirteen over all and it'll be pipeline for one and a half years. Trevor Bauer when the rotation was already the best rotation they put together together in a decade. I was like what the hell are you doing. Why why because at the time that you would do to address your roster sure to get better as traits? Why Trade you best guy for somebody who seems almost redundant to what your best aspect is? It's one trade. They could pull off or something they really needed so at the time I hated it. Absolutely despise the deal in which they would a trade journal for a guy who would have been around for longer than Bauer or who is cheaper than our all the the aspects of the old small market trade only Cincinnati reds. That's it if the reds actually are willing to begin to address roster issues by spinning in Free Agency that to me looks a lot better on paper Because okay trade all the prospects if you can go outside Nice to replace him. That's just not something red's ever did did ever before Trials Guy who is as tools as could possibly be They signed him. It was the second pick. I think it was a supplementary first-round Pick Nick in two thousand sixteen they saved about a million and a half bucks on Nixon's when they took him second overall through all of that money. Detailed Your Mel signed for three and a half million dollars Goodbye out of a scholarship to Georgia tech where he was particularly also gonNA play football. Standout running back stayed out athlete. Guy Approved by university Georgia Livable's football as well Just one of the tools. These athletes that red hat in their system in a long long time giving up on him where they did I was I was really really frustrated. Frustrated he was going through a swing. Change you look at his numbers at Aa this year. They really weren't that good as I mentioned earlier. In the PODCAST. The the Double Environment Office Environment Emmett Chattanooga's really was not getting all this year. Especially for lefthanded hitters. So that kind of played into his numbers really being down. It seemed like a soul low on him to me and got a guy. It's only there for a year and a half half which was a season in twenty nine team with the reds. Weren't going anywhere. It really puts a lot of their eggs in the basket for for the twenty twenty season season. I think Bauer has the chance to be a very good bounce. Back candidates specially heading into free agency after this year the reds bringing in cal- boaty. You could tell the bowers guy that they had interested in for a long time before this and this all kind of seems to be kind of coming together in a perfect storm knock on wood for how good Bauer could could be next year But trails guy who I still have very very high hopes for. I think he's going to continue to evolve and improve as he gets more and more used to that swing change changed. But he's the guy who I still look up in the rescue out and sign every outfielder. They possibly could want to make me forget about Taylor's from L. That still doesn't diminish the fact that I think he's very very good impactful player For whether it's the padres or somebody else down the road. I think he's kind of guy that just did really still burns. Think about the redskins enough on him. Yeah for sure. I'm pretty much of the opinion that of your so. I hate that You know he they had to do the away with Trammell but you know maybe maybe it works out in the end but finishing out with the bullpen Just a few quick couple questions Amir Amir Garrett pretty solid season over your thoughts on his season I did he make enough of a jump to be. You know the setup guy And just your thoughts awesome his season as a whole. Yeah his was up and down for sure you know he was a guy who we all got severely snubbed by not being on the All star team. His first half half was just brilliant guy who excuse me he was a guy who was saint. John's phenomenal athlete. The reds ethic drafted him. Wait and sign up for a seven figure bonus knowing that he's going to continue play college basketball but a guy that won't be patient on crack every single possible top WANNA prospect list crack top fifty by couple As a starting with the miners and near the reds at that point in time during when he started on the rebuild really had a big group of guys who we thought was going to be the rotation the future And all who were very very highly riddick is Brandon Finnegan cody read Robert Stevenson and Garrett was a big big part of that as well None of those guys panned out as starters But you saw from Stevenson a little bit last year and certainly from Garin That the way Derrick Johnson implements his is pitching philosophy. It's not euro relief pitcher. You need these three pitches. Learn them and throw them in this mix. It is throw your best patient though. It is often as you think you need to and Amir Garrett slider is absolutely one of the best wipeout pitches in all of baseball. Aw and you really saw focus on throwing that last year and when he is. He's almost untouchable. It's not quite Josh. Heydrich but it's very every similar from the left side and he's a guy while I'm extremely high on I think he's kind of found his niche back there I certainly think he's got the chops to be one of the better elected setup and all the National League for for Twenty Twenty and going forward hopefully and Last question for you do the reds go out and bring in a guy you know another guy to work in the seventh through ninth inning. I think so yeah is quote unquote closer. Although I think it would preferred I use it more as that high leverage guy than the quote unquote ninth inning Guy So he's there. Michael Lorenzen extremely interesting guy. Especially now the fact that the twenty-sixth roster twenty-six rolls into play and the provision for having a the two way player. He's a guy who I think is just going to continue to improve the Boldon open I I think those three. You've got a pretty solid back in Mentioned Robert Stevenson. He kind of broke out in a relief last year as well. I think those four lucrative Luke sims you get a pretty good mix there that said The reds love playing great American ballpark. You have to Love guys can come in and get it ground ball and they had that Jerry use the last two years A guy who can come in. Is somebody guiding first base and you need a big out or try go play A. He's just announced. Grab all machine A guy like Brennan Kessler. I think would be a really good fit in that role but I think the reds will sign another veteran interest to bring in for that back into the bullpen. They lost you're accused of mid year last year David Hernandez well both of whom had great twenty eighteen seasons not not so much twenty nineteen but also guys that you'll fill that veteran role in the bullpen. I think you'll see the rents. Go Out and get a guy like that Kim jumps out to me. You might be a little extensive than that. went to what is spent for a guy who doesn't profile his eighth-inning Guy But someone in that that is absolutely what What the reds are contrary targeted this winter?.

"The reds hi everybody check corgan along with jerry schimmel and producer engineer jesse thomas rockies for the first time this season have a four game losing streak so they certainly wanna turn that over the next couple of days starting with tonight actually solutely jack and they're back on the road with evatt success or nineteen and thirteen away from course field this year's tied for the second most wins on the road in the national league so they're very comfortable on the road they were a team that had a good start to their home stand but not a great finish to it and hoping to kind of pick up the pieces after a day off yesterday get back on that winning track the reds are exciting excited here tonight because anthony disclosure fani one of their young pitching prospects is finally going to be back pitching in a regular season game for the first time in a couple of seasons about that late to september i think it was two thousand sixteen that he lasts pitch and that was from in relief so yeah activated from the disabled list today had his rehab starts he had four those and then miners and it's the guy that the red really like he had two different injuries that last couple of years the elbow strain as well as you leak strain and he's back there tonight we're not sure what the pitch count might be in terms of limitations for him but i think the reds are very excited about having this guy back on the mound and the rockies feel excited in their own right because kyle freeland who has been as consistent as anybody gets the call for colorado i think you make an argument jackie's been the most consistent pitcher from day one with the rockies there have been some great performances with beddis gray and some other but they've been little up and down this guy's been pretty steady along the way he said his last time amount was probably the worst out and he got the win in that game so i think the rockies feel very good about their lefty there denver native on the.

"Certainly these are two of them moving onto the next big story it's a big story in new york it's about to shift over to cincinnati and actually to los angeles because matt harvey who was designated for assignment by the mets and then subsequently traded to the reds will start tonight in los angeles for the reds so they're really not wasting anytime seeing what what they have a matt harvey it's not as if the reds are needing to be careful with any of this their record is terrible and it doesn't look like they're getting out of that anytime soon so the interim manager jim riggleman said that harvey pitch a couple of innings maybe go four but he will be little bit limited because of his lack of recent just game appearances so it's been a volatile time for him in in new york i know spoke to the media and i think that he is putting that all to rest after his one time talking to the media about his years in new york so i don't know richard i mean i guess this is you know like a wide not situation i do feel like matt harvey has the potential to go on and have a major league career in in some capacity but i don't feel like he's gonna write himself this year with this team going out on the major league stage i feel like he's gonna have to go to like one of these like ranches in the off season with some pitching guru that nobody knows his name and reinvent himself and try to be able to get outs doing other things i know you kind of feel like he just has to i don't know maybe refined some pitches that he's doesn't seem to wanna throw anymore i think he's got a star but looking himself in the mirror this is the hundred and fifth start of his career he's twenty nine years old he's got a sixty are a over his last forty four appearances that's that's where you start looking at mirror in on it feels like this is a crossroads of sorts but it felt like it was a crossroads of sorts when he gets mickey callaway his manager dave island is.

"Reds exactly right i who he he's not the quarterback of the future the giant so and davis webb who you're like if you're going to do this you say okay let's get a look at him he was an active so it just all around was just a ridiculous decision to do and how they went about doing it and now it just seems like he may need to burn the thing down yeah that seems to be the only i'd say outcome in this that makes any sense because footballwise all these decisions are are interesting but if the lack of decisive leadership that's really the glaring error in all of this and that's the mirrors coming out and saying we wish wedeman bore volvo it's your job to be involved in around for these decisions to happen ben makah do obviously is grossly mismanaged a lot of things coming out around all of this but top to bottom the inconsistency the way too transparent nature of this and ultimately them undermining themselves has been embarrassing for a franchise that you expect to be better and again according to chris mortensen adam schefter that firing of been mac at which a giants hardly ever do ever do anything like that in season could come as early as today but he almost get the feeling guys they're doing that to sort of see they can distract us from how what you just talked about how poorly this was handled with the manning situation look if you wanna look to the future that's fine that's understandable he is going to be thirty seven in january years in his fourteen th season but the way this sort of thing was propped up they want him to go out and be the show pony to keep his streak alive we had steve young on on oreo ally i said i wanna told the stick it now i want to me to do that it don't say you didn't know because there's no way ben macular was on a short rope any way oh yeah there's no way he did this on his own he wasn't just give a hey guys just so you know i'm going to do this and i hope you're okay with it that's not the way were and mike i heard you play it on your show just just where we are in this situation and you knew he was going to be asked it but how ally handled being.
