National Pretend To Be a Time Traveler Day with Jack Conway
"Hey paul this is jack. I'd love to know more about pretend to be a time traveler day. I did some research. And it doesn't seem that all scientists think time travel's impossible but i don't think we've quite figured out yet so until then we'll just need to pretend which actually sounds like a lot of fun anyway. I'd love to know more about this day. Thanks there's been a lot of national days of my friends have challenged me with throughout this year. And although i won't commit to this. But jack's choice may top them all today. December eighth is national. Pretend to be a time traveler. Day any guesses what you're supposed to do today. Apparently we are supposed to wear some very close from yesteryear or act confused by certain technology. Okay maybe for some of you. That's not too difficult. Say with me. Rss stands for release simple syndication for my first recommendation. I've gone back in time to the year. Twenty twelve and found this live. Talk from comecon by the stuff you should know. People they discuss time travel. Works and reference people like carl sagan. They also get a visit from a time traveler and talk about the musical paradox from back to the future after listening to gout and strap on your steam punk or victorian close and share using the pretend to be a time traveler day hashtag. Today's guests is jack conway. Jack is the editor of podcast review. Which delivers podcast. "Shame in the moments where i still feel like. I read one comment and thing. Like oh. My god i should what. Why did i do that or like. I should never make music again. Like i still have those moments so often but the best piece of advice. I think i've ever gotten is when you get like a negative thought. Like comes into your head is just like asking yourself like it's true like okay. Yeah i might feel like. I suck but is that true. Like what do i know about this. Or what other opinions. Can i give myself on this about how i feel about it rebecca moved to la to be on her own and that's where she still is and when we speak. Rebecca is still so young the ten year anniversary of something that happened when you were thirteen makes you twenty three. She can't even rent a car and she's grown up and she's making her own music and she's finding her way in the world same as any other twenty-three-year-old along the way i i have really found a way to find like a community that feels like there are people that i would know in in love if we all up the same town together and That's been through to channel. That's been through the ways. That i guess kind of showed different parts of my life and and as i have grown the kinds of things that i want to create have also just changed and they still continue to change. I am asking myself more than ever like. Can i offer in a sense. It'll feel really good to me but also provide something that's valuable for my audience. Because i know that it's not just them relying on me especially during this year that has been like the just shit show that it has been. We really rely on each other. And so i am just trying to take whatever i can whether it be like a really valuable lesson. It has enough to be steep talk all the time but just making them feel like they have that person there that i wish that i had growing up. That would have helped me liked be guided through life on the internet if britney spears can make it through two thousand seven you can make it through today and yeah brittany. Got a really raw deal and hopefully someday. We'll talk about that together. But really i would like to update that phrase to say if rebecca black can survive being bullied by most of the world. You can make it through this because truly the internet of two thousand eleven took a fun video made by a literal child and acted like it was a crime against humanity for a middle schooler to sing a song that lyrically questionable when really most of us who are older than gen z whole. Lot of cringe embarrassing. Awful maybe borderline illegal things in our past that we are just lucky enough to have rotting in a landfill somewhere. That rebecca is still here that she's alive and she's still creating and putting herself out there. Someone give me a giant trophy. So i can give it to her. You don't even have to give it to me. Give it to her directly. That would probably be smarter. It's such a weird balance. That i feel like honestly i still struggle with times and i think that the way that this industry is bill. Is you take a person and build that person into a product which is just the way that a lot of this has worked for years and years and years and has served many people. Great things over the years. But i don't know if every person is built to commodified themselves and be able to make that distinction of like okay. This is me as the product that people know. This is rebecca black. Who is rebecca black. Who makes his music. And there's rebecca who is just a teenager or you know at the time of teenager at now is a twenty three year old. And it's something i still ask myself. What am i willing to sacrifice because there are certain sacrifices to make when you have a product that has an audience. So i think now there is an element of the industry in a part of the industry. That is trying to rework that and build more just humanity into the entire process because it becomes very difficult at times to kind of differentiate yourself from coup are as this brand and who you are. Because i'm always changing. I'm not meant to be this one thing. I wanna change on my own behalf. I wanna change on my own time line. I don't wanna change on somebody else's. I don't wanna grow on what somebody else wants me to do. And i guess just being honest with myself of like what. I'm willing to sacrifice. In what i'm not that i think has been the biggest like balancing tool that i found is really asking myself how comfortable i am versus how comfortable i feel like. I should feel that. Make sense in a lot of ways. Rebecca is the best case scenario of how going viral can affect a kid. She's not that terrible. She just lived with a lot of anxiety and depression during her formative years. But what about kids. Now who are being pushed into being viral into becoming brands. If friday happened in twenty twenty what would be different. I don't think today's internet would publicly. Shame and also she'd have instagram swipe ups in a line of something or other. Today's internet almost hungers for kids to be content creators to be profit centers. I look at so many of these kids who are having their own experiences through right now and i just hope that they've got someone mayor that is like just purely looking out for them because i mean now more than ever i feel like very quickly becomes like the point of just capitalizing off. These kids just happens even quicker than than how it happened with me. And i just know how hard that is to at eighteen or before eighteen and how difficult it is to put yourself out there like that at any age. It's hard to put yourself out there. It's hard like both. My parents are divorced and they still talk to me about our hardest but themselves out on dates like it's just hard to get yourself out there at any point and as a kid. I just hope that we all keep moving in a direction where we are taking care of kids and where we are aware of the fact that they are children and the one thing that i heard so often growing up and i still here now is like i had no idea that you were thirteen. Why didn't you have any idea i get. Why didn't look it. But why wasn't that more of a part.

"Right back just five months ago. Rebecca black exploded. Friday hit a hundred and sixty seven million views on youtube. That's half the country making her an instant star but it also launched a national debate about whether it really was the worst sun ever in two thousand eleven. Rebecca black was a normal middle schooler intel. She wasn't so to set the scene for two thousand eleven. What it's like online at this time. Two thousand eleven instagram newish We are not running businesses on instagram. There are new influencers. We are just you know plopping down terrible highly filtered photos. Then he was a big recording star. Thou these little kids were seeing this and thinking. Oh my gosh cool. I want to do that. Rebecca was the kind of kid who just loved to perform. She always had where i grew up. There was like this little shopping center. That kind of had these little light things for kids. There was a dance studio and a karate studio. My brother went downstairs to karate upstairs to dance and like that was just kind of something my parents tried and i think my brother lasted a few weeks in karate and it became very clear that it did not matter.

Lyra McKee: 'New IRA' admits killing of journalist
"Last thursday. Twenty nine year old journalist Lyra Mckee was shot dead in Londonderry twenty one years after the Good Friday agreement was signed to bring peace to Northern Ireland yesterday. A group called the new IRA released a statement taking responsibility for the killing and offering it sincere apologies to liars family who holding her funeral today to find out more about the situation on the protests that followed liars murder, I'm joined by Rebecca black who's a journalist with the Press Association based in Belfast, Rebecca who are the new IRA and holiday different from other branches of the group. Morning there and the IRA they're a dissident Republican dissident Irish Republican terrorist group, but they Kim together to eleven grew together. A lot of these smaller groups that were sort of sloughs ING steam and the come together though, they're small numbers. They have being described as the threats by the police service of Northern Ireland's some of their members were involved with real array, which listeners will probably remember, and they responsible for the ball in nineteen ninety which which killed a lot of people. What has the public's response being to the group's admission of guilt? Well, just order discuss. I think the statement yesterday came quite a few days after it was very much enough to fold on an even though it shouldn't apology still seeking to justify what it has done. So buro- responses being. It's not enough. If you're issue any sort of statement, it should be that you're going to spy on the late stage. What would what possible justification can there be? What do they say? Well in their Russian they're blaming the police service and on the on the night. It's all on the night. That killed 'em was a police operation going on. There were searching Heis and based on intelligence and Abida terrorist suspects. The police have combined actually since then and said the review intelligence before the search and they're perfectly happy. It was the jet on should have gone ahead. But these dissident Republicans they say the by the peace coming into an area such as Creggan, and it some way provocative that they're suppressing them. They're perfectly entitled to riots Super Four lire Schultz and was ride in helping that was that was quite a number of petrol bombs thrown up police, and then in the battle this Amana merged, but yet in their Russia there, they think it's acceptable to close riots on to ultimately their Jackson to any sort of any sort of doctors objecting to out of being part of the United Kingdom and there. Of the mindset that learned Heil do Coyote violence until Northern Ireland's part of the United Ireland and their their philosophy. And is there any sense that this sympathy for that point of view, and that people aren't supporting extremists on either side? Well, very very little sympathy far. I mean, it was very different buck in the nineteen seventies. When the provisional IRA were going because they did have somewhat support. This group has very little support. I think after the carrying of killing of narrow in particular, a young female journalist who was competing political opinion chill. All she was doing was just watching that night. That's close to even more discussed. A main there seems to be even a split within the discipline grip themselves because ever since Thursday there have been a number of incidents where Petra ball miss that side, a dissident members Heiss the shots fired another person's heist in Lurgan county, my yesterday, do they seem to be disagreement even within themselves as you said, we know that Staunton the power-sharing agreement broke down of two years ago. I wonder how far the up since of a working assembly stoking, more extreme fringe groups.

"So what makes us great is that he posted this on Twitter for you know, just to get some positive feedback. Right. Sure. That's what he was hoping for. But there is a one of his colleagues came back. I mean at first of all on the tweet, he just said, you know, new track. Is a fire or trash in your your my favorite player Keenan mccardell? Okay. Get back. Brearley honest said row that straight trash. Yeah. That's excellent. That's what you want out of this. You want some constructive criticism? Correct. Yeah. Listen, if you have a cute video of like a little kid, and he's like oh this little kids going to kindergarten. But he doesn't know that his father who's in the military is waiting for him and the little kid walks through the door. He sees his daddy. As it seemed like two years. He runs into his, arm and cries Twitter will destroy that in a heartbeat. Like don't put anything on Twitter Twitter will destroy everything like anything that you like oh my God. My heart is bringing us so beautiful. That is beautiful moment. The cynics will come right out and pour gasoline on that fire. They don't mind. What a you wrapping on on Twitter at expecting the Twitter world to go. Oh my God. This is brilliant. And I made it was a it was Keenan Allen knocking. Well done. Even went on further your hand, if you honestly felt that way, you could have just texted me don't put it out on social media thirty to put it out there put out in public. Thank you. Like, I said, I speak facts. I don't troll. I love that. Can I use that line? I speak facts. I don't troll. That's awesome. That's great. And that's what you want out of your friends. You want them to just be brutally honest. Sometimes. Because I mean, all of a sudden dodgers opens up all the Twitter. I mean. Yeah, he's going to get blasted. It was he had to have known that. And he doesn't he he seems to me the kind of guy who would take those thoughts personally. Jay have somebody in your life that you don't mind when they listen one of the things I love about my wife, for example, is that I brush my teeth. I I use a breadth thing, right? I'll my wife will tell me when my breath is awful, she'll say that's awful. You gotta fix that. She'll be like I've listened normally. I you have good breath. But right now, it's terrible. And I'm not embarrassed by it because you know, I go great. I'll go upstairs. She trust me. Gotta go. Do this. You need somebody in your life. That will do that somebody that will look and say, nah that shirt and those pants do not go together change like you need somebody in your life. Like that. Right. I know I told this story once when I was I I got to do the state baseball championships in Nevada when I was living there, and I was so excited, and I was so prepared and I wasn't good and my wife who was my newly. We're just buried. She said now that wasn't good. Woo. You're going to basketball. You're good at auto racing. But you're not going to that. Like I'd never called the baseball game again. But sometimes you just need that I need the honesty, so levian bell. Congratulations. You've got the honesty now maybe spice it up a little bit. Maybe not so bitter. All right. Maybe not. So Otto, Tony. Yeah. I mean that whole thing was just straight auto tune into you don't even hear his voice Rebecca black is like God that stop. Terrible terrible. What's bad about of the day? Tony. I don't know if you saw this because it's in your neck of the woods. I'm not really sure we're frozen head state park is I just know that it's in Tennessee frozen head state park. Yes. But the one in a why they call it that I don't wanna know why they call that. But the the bad is that no one finished the Barclay marathon for the second year in a row, the Barclay Marivan Barclay marathon have you heard about this. What is the Barkley marathons? Only forty participants. All right, and it's one hundred mile race. Okay. You think I've heard that you have sixty hours to finish it. Okay. I have heard this. Yeah. Okay. I've had this is really bad. This is a really bad race the dumbest race I've ever heard first of all, you know, date. It's over five days, you run twenty miles a day. But you gotta finish under sixty hours. And you're doing it through the woods, right? Yeah. It's like they just found a random trails that let's start here. Then you just run around this day two and four or at night to make it even more difficult, and there's there's only two stops along the way. Where you know. There's like aid. There's two water stops. That's it. That's it. You're on your own. You gotta carry your own stuff. But my favorite thing about this race. Tony you I know you've you've you've seen a lot of races. How would you expect a race? Like this to start with a bunch of people at the starting line, they go and you'll run. Exactly, right, right. You've you know, this one is start by the race organizer lighting a camel cigarette now, so he's got he's got a camel in his mouth, and he's got a lighter. And he's like go. I don't even think he says the word go, I think was seriously lights it. That's when you're allowed to run. Then that's how you know. This is a great race. Oh, yeah. That's great. That's great. Golly. I can't even magin have training for that. Rain for that. You're massively in shape. How do you do that? I mean, you know, some of the some of the cool things about is that if if you are accepted to be in this, it's a dollar sixty application fee. And like, I said only forty people are are asked. Did you are allowed to race this race? All right. So how much was sixty. So if you hundred if you wanted to submit it application will cost you a dollar sixty to submit this application, just to see if you're in the running of racing if you're a new entrant you're required to bring a license plate from the state or the country late. So you got to take it off your car. And then if if you were previous racer. There's an additional fee, which you some of the things included a white shirt or socks or flannel shirt as a donation. Oh, okay. The race bib number one is always given to the person deemed to be the least likely to finish one lap. Oh, good. That would be me. So those you because one lap is twenty miles. Now, forget it. Now there is there were six runners who've finished the fun run. I'd say that in quotation marks run run. Yeah. Run is through this three day you finish three out of the five days, and that's sixty miles sixty miles. But again, I mean, you're. You know, I I don't know how much of you America's been in the woods during the day. If you've ever ran through the woods. I mean, that's tough as it is. I can't imagine doing it at night. Oh a night. It'd be awful. Like, I like, listen, if you if you said, hey, you're five days, go to this air conditioned room on a treadmill with a TV in front of it and just walk run until that thing says one hundred miles and you have five days to do it. I still couldn't do it running through a trail like with mosquitoes and plants and twigs and whatever is out there. Sasquatch bigfoot. Yeah. No chance polar bears. Alligators bald eagles. Right. No. I'm not to get any of that nonsense. Not a chance running through there. Dogs kitty cats that I mean, my favorite part is the fact that the race organizer who's pitted me of health here. If you see a photo of him. He looks like a typical person that you would imagine eating at a. A Perkins or waffle house in Tennessee. Yeah. The way he starts the racist lighting are camel cigarettes, beautiful beautiful dump the demo of the day. And I'm this is I'm gonna leave it up to you to choose. What's dumber because I'm not really sure what's dumber. Okay. Jau announced yesterday on April Fools day mind, you that there will be another fire festival this summer. Oh, or is it the fact that there will be another fire festival this summer? Okay. Do we know that this is not an April Fool's, Joey? No. This is not a naval kills joke. Yeah. I mean, it could come out that way. But the fact is is this time he feels that he is taking a step in the right direction because he is bringing Mark Cuban on board. Okay. Okay. This is this might actually be redeemable. I didn't know how to I didn't know how music festivals work. Okay. Like, I'm not I don't know how to plan one. I don't know the logistics. I don't know. For example, if I were to have an event, and I was going to bring ten thousand people like I don't know what I need for like a bathroom services and water. And I don't know any of that stuff. So you hire people to do that. I think when they got on the scene of the fire festival. They realized there was so many problems with the way was the logistics of it, if they're gonna do it at least make sure everything can go right that you need to go. Right. So I think they they didn't plan for all of that. So it was like last minute 'cause they were put trying to put it on this little island, and then they went into a bigger island. But when they moved into the bigger island there was like four other things going on at the island. So they didn't have anything that they needed that. I mean, it's literally it's the same. The same game plan is in place is to have it on an island. Obviously, I'm hoping he's learned from his mistakes. But we're going to have a really great documentary coming out in next January February well with Mark Cuban being so high profile, at least at least people will should get paid. Right. Like woman who is the caterer. She ended up with a gofundme page here, and she got her money back when she lost her life savings again. But my only problem with this is that he's planning on holding it Labor Day weekend this summer Labor Day weekend, right planning a gigantic concert for Labor Day weekend. And he's he's planning on holding in the Caribbean. Again, one of the main problems last time, and you know, it's a weather phenomenon that happens every year in the Gulf of Mexico or hurricanes. Yes. Don't I under the impression that you can have this concert in the Caribbean and say December, and it's still going to be beautiful. Yes. It's not nice to fool mother nature, like don't mess around with this..

Ding Dong is I'll give you one of the you give them a ding Dong off the air. Why do you have to? It's like superfluous. Why do you have to give it to him on the air as well? Because nobody heard it off the air you heard it, but on the air so somebody did here at hundreds of people now here it, but what do they feel better about himself? When you're not here to do a radio show to make Mondo feel better about himself. But if it helps them out in the guy drives hometown because I got a good thing. Don, man like that. That I think it's fine. But I'd like to drive home and feel good about myself too. All right. Well, tomorrow tomorrow, if you're good tonight, if you're good you produce the show well tomorrow, I'll give you Dixon's Rebecca black and David Goldstein on. I know it's great show. Bye. Like, you're holding a stick a dynamite Wiley, Coyote style, and who knows what happens after that. You don't want your family to find you like that? So get it out of your system..

"Go mornings from six to ten on kfi am six forty eight is the conway show rebecca black with us she has a very famous song called friday but that is not her whole career thirteen when you did it now you're twenty twenty twenty one next week oh that's great where are we going for the twenty first birthday vegas i am working on have you heard of bitcon have you never heard of it now your kids probably know about it is it's this huge youtube convention that happens every year and anaheim convention center and i'll performing is madness that's great madden bet thousands of people yeah i mean there's a video game convention this weekend in la at the convention center and they sold out in like an hour wow they sold forty thousand tickets they another forty thousand people wanted to go it's amazing but we're looking at this and i couldn't believe this either but there's a song is it dispossessed them espec busy though it has five point two billion views okay that's unbelievable is actually unplayable because that song is only like a year old yeah it came out like january of last year so in one year it has more than half the world has looked that's amazing so so where did did you finish high school did you go to college afterwards i moved straight up here like two weeks after graduating and moved up to l a and i started writing oh that's pretty cool okay and who have you worked with i'm sure a lot of people want to collaborate with you you know it was actually really tough when i first moved out here because there were people that were really supportive and really excited to see you know what we could do together but honestly because of friday to get real for a second like there were a lot of people that said now i don't want my name on that or you know i don't know i don't know if that's worth my time so that was really tough that's one of the reasons why it took so long it was two years of writing to get one ep was that depressing for you you came along with people already knew who you were before it was i wouldn't say it was depressing it definitely you know how we were talking about avoiding our problems that made me be like okay there's something going on here because in the studios i would get in i would get in there and be like oh now i can't say anything like i've fooled i think that they can work with me right so there were a few months of like me having to go like okay i need to work on myself i need a really like understand what happened here and you must have been raised properly they did it didn't destroy you you didn't turn to the bottle and you know drinking gin every night see that's the way i went that's okay december always shaking her head man this guy around here all right so you're writing now how did katy perry get hold you she honestly just found i don't know i mean i don't think she personally picked up the phone and called but they're working on a music video called last friday night at the time and it was pretty soon after friday had really like kind of taken off and they were looking for some cameos and that'd be a great fit and it turned into something i mean like a whole roll and not only that blake she was so supportive throughout that entire time i mean even still up to now there are times where last year we were just talking about this during the break during her a witness when she really style them witness and she did that whole livestream she brought it up and was just so kind so is that what was your first contact with she call you or did you see her on the set for first time i saw her on set and she was playing this crazy character called kathy beth terry for the video and they were filming something for some something she was in character i can't believe i didn't follow her i was so i've never been so nervous in my life she must be thrilled when she met you too yeah i mean that's crazy to think about it also you know when when you have katy perry supporting you and there are a bunch of a holes out there who are saying nasty things it probably reduced that.
