"Bid to counter vaccine skepticism and hesitancy. Pope Francis has added his voice to the chorus of leaders urging everyone to get inoculated against Covid 19. NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports on the pontiff's public service message. In the video, Francis says vaccines grant us the hope of ending the pandemic, but only if they are available to all and if we work together, competent being vaccinated with vaccines authorised by the competent authorities, the pope says, is an act of love. Love is also social and political, The pope adds. It's universal. When Francis was vaccinated in February, he said, it's an ethical obligation. Vaccine. Skepticism has been high among religious conservatives. But the Vatican has declared the covid vaccines morally acceptable for Catholics, including those based on research that use cells derived from aborted fetuses. Sylvia

"Twenty, fifth, two, thousand, nineteen, the solemnity of the nunciatures of the Lord. Pope Francis gave his Apostolic Exhortation Chris. The document would follow the two thousand eighteen centered on young people. The faith in vocational discernment was the first. Papal document addressed to young people as well as the entire people of God. We'll follows this less of a traditional magisterial taxed. Those certainly is just that and more of a letter. Written from spiritual father to his children. Chapter One explores what sacred scripture has to say about young people. Young people in the context in which the Holy Father was writing means anyone from the ages of about sixteen to twenty nine. In the United States context, we can expand. Both are categories of youth. Twelve to eighteen and young adults ages, one, thousand, nine, hundred, thirty nine. He points our attention to Gideon Samuel and Solomon in the Old Testament into the life of Jesus in the New Testament. He reminds us that Jesus being young did not imply lesser worth dignity. In fact, we should remember that standard stands. Jesus himself was a young person. Pope Francis rates if you've lost your inner vitality. Your dreams, your enthusiasm and your optimism and your generosity. Jesus urges you. Young, man, I say to you arise. Chapter to continues to reflect upon Jesus every young. Pope Francis reflects upon the baptism of Jesus. That was a concentration prior to his embarking on the great mission of life. Now young people are invited to hear the father speaking those same words within his or her heart. You are my beloved child. The Holy Father then explores Jesus's youth can teach us about the Church Including, the youth is not just an age, but a state of mind. And the Young Church must be open to renewal and attentive to the signs of the Times. The Holy Father been reflects upon the life of Mary and young saints such as Saint Sebastian Saint Uva Zoo. And blessed Pier Giorgio for Saudi. Chapter three is titled. You are the now of God. In this chapter Pope Francis Acknowledges that rather than listening young people attentively. All Too often there is a tendency to provide prepackaged answers in ready made solutions without allowing their real questions to emerge. Chopper the Pope Francis provide us one of his most poignant reminders in the entire document. That we cannot speak of young people as homogenous category. But that? Our young people are from distinct groups each with its own life experience. He continues by exploring some the challenges of young people, including the digital environment, migration and forms of abuse. The chapter. Four is the heart of. It is in this chapter. The Pope Francis lays out before full truth for all of God's children here, but especially young people. God is love. He saves us. He is alive. And his spirit gives us life. He says. I can tell you absolute certainty. The you can find security in the embrace of your heavenly father. Of the God who I gave you life. And continues to give it to you at every moment. It is because of this God. WHO LOVES US? The Pope Francis says there can be no doubt that goodness will have the upper hand in your life. And then all our struggles approve worthwhile. In chapter. Five Pope Francis shows us the various paths of youth. Youth as a time of dreams and decisions that are based in the hope, we have from Jesus. Thirst for life and experience. That doesn't just seek pleasure. But to experience fully in with gratitude, every one of life's little gifts. He speaks of a life in friendship with Christ. That not only receives the love that Christ pours out on us. But that also loves him, and here's his love with those around us. He focuses on growth in maturity, the paths of fraternity, the commitment of young people to share Christ in their participation in social and political society. And lastly the path of the courageous missionary. Where the Holy Father reminded us. Where does Jesus us? There are no borders no limits. He sends US everywhere. In chapter. Sex, Pope Francis speaks of young people with roots. This is such an important part of the document. To have roots is to be as pope. Francis draws a comparison like a tree that is firmly planted. For it is impossible for us to grow unless we have a strong root system to support us, and to keep us firmly grounded. He speaks of intergenerational relationships between the elderly and young people. That share the vision and dreams of youth with the memories and experience of the elderly. Parameters writes about Ministry with young people in Chapter. Seven as you reminded that pastoral, Ministry with young people must be cynical. It should involve journeying together through a process of CO responsibility. We must reach out to our young people. Seeking growth in our relationship with the risen Lord always proclaiming the Charisma. The proclamation of the Life Daphne resurrection of Jesus, Christ and growing in fraternal love, community, life and service. Later in the chapter, he speaks of a Popular Organic Youth Ministry. He says ministry when it ceases to be elitist willing to be popular. The process, it is gradual respectful. Patient. Hopeful. Tireless and compassionate. At the end he reminds that young people need to be accompanied by adults, so the gifts can be realized, and the seeds of young people can nurture to bear the fruits of the spirit. Chapter Eight speaks about vocation. Chapter Pope Francis reminded US vocations a call a friendship with God. And that is essentially communal. Only father recognizes that locations manifest themselves in different ways for some it is the love of the family for others is in a special consecration. We must also recognize vocation in our work to see and live the universal to holiness. The last chapter focuses on disarmament. Young people must discern their vocation. The Pope Practice spoke of in Chapter Eight. Reminds us of the need for silence. Prolonged prayer. which enables US better to perceive God's language to interpret the real meaning the inspirations? We believe we have received. The Call Martin. and to see the whole of our existence of fresh in his own light. Jesus calls us to recognize that he is our friend. And that as with any relationship. There was demand the we choose to encounter him and to give him our. Yes. The Holy Father Ends with three sensitivities as we accompany young people. Sensitivity directly to the individual. Sensitivity marked by discernment. And sensitivity that is able to perceive what is driving the other person. Through these three sensitivities, we can walk on the journey of Discernment Together Ripe for both spiritual reflection and practical ministerial practice. Chris v reads a letter from a spiritual father to his tour. We are invited to read this letter. To wrestle with it. And bring it to the Lord. Both. What challenges us? Firms us. We always remember. Christ is alive..

"So until that happens and a here this rightly, I do believe. Although God bless the churches that are dating women. But I do believe that if at least in the Catholic church we are deigned women right now, they would be put into a model. That's patriarchal. There. And maybe they bring a little sweet feminine energy to it. But it wouldn't be long, and I have seen this too at other churches, where you basically, except the culture that you're apart of you like all the pomp and circumstance and adulation that pre skipped which is now received in Filmon for. So maybe it's okay. I don't know how many more years I'd like to believe twenty. I don't always going to be much quicker than that. But it's going to take a pope in our church. Who's at the mystical level at the yellow turquoise levels to to have the courage to do it. Now. Pope Francis is at that level. But I think he's choosing his battles wisely. And he's making his edge into married priests in certain parts of the world the foot is in the door for marriage pre that will have to happen. I once you have married priests in will the next generation will be ready for women pres, and we'll stop our fixation that men are the sacred figures. Thus just my quick and naive analysis. It sounds like you're saying I mean, it's structural a meter, and I appreciate your insight because I do think. Many of us is women are blind to or perhaps swimming in the waters of patriarchy to the point where we don't see that. We're actually being asked to step into a role of leadership as a male in a structurally male way. And so was drums. I can't. Yeah. How? It's hard to not have a little bit of like, what would it look like, then, you know, what would what would this shift be toward a I guess a whole ARCHE is Ken Wilber describes it. Instead of a hierarchy. It's hard to imagine. Maybe the Anglican church, and the Methodist church, those many churches have women ministers. They're all be already beginning. To twist the Catholic archetype. I remember when I first saw Susan Sager who started saying Martins. Attended her mass of this was in the early nineties, and it was a mass for about ties to baby and see a woman baptizing baby. And then raising up to God and holding it to her just I said by this is pretty natural. And it works it works. So we're going to have to see it for imagine Asian to be changed. And that's where you're right. You have some people are courageously going to have to push the envelope. Maybe they're rebels. Maybe they're a little too aggressive. But someone's always gotta do that. So that I'm all for them. Even though I can be pretty patient. I mean, it would it would -absolutely split. The Catholic church. We would be to churches if he'd try it. Now, even if you try married priests on a whole scale. Yeah. Change takes so long any institution..

"The the guarantor of the agreement so we reached out to the vatican bomb met with pope francis who wanted to be helpful he's from latin america we secretly had a cardinal from havana visit the white house came into the the back door gave these formal letters offering up the vatican his venue i flew out to the vatican with the cubans in the fall of two thousand fourteen as we would the vatican didn't realize is how far we've come because the vatican doesn't do any business over email which in retrospect it's pretty smart they know hacks you know wikileaks yeah so so we couldn't tell them how much progress we made so when we got their funny walking in the vatican and we're meeting the cardinal who's kind of the the number two guy in the vatican the secretary of state is what they call an actually and we tell them look we're prepared to normalize relations and he didn't believe us i think at first and we're these two separate meetings frisa cuban delegation and then i went in with my negotiating partner and he kind of looked at me and said are you really you know really gonna normalize relations with cuba and i said yes and then he looked at me and he said who are you you know 'cause i'm just young i like you didn't i hadn't heard of me and i'm like well ben rhodes and he's like does john kerry no you're here and i was again though he does and but then we we we had this amazing experience of reading aloud these commitments we've made to each other again to open embassies and take all the steps and the people in the vatican side many whom had worked in cuba because they're from latin america they had tears in their eyes and the the the cardinal said this is another one that's moment with bin laden they've just felt like he said you know this is going to give people hope that in a world it's bigger than the us and cuban a world where there's so many conflicts and if two adversaries can put the past behind them that that might send a positive message and that was another one of those times where i felt like okay this let me just pause in this moment for a second and i've got to ask about putin yet after the dnc hacks around the democratic national convention i think obama met with putin for the last time in september yeah that was their last one on one meeting yeah it was pretty tense it was really tense we i was i was in the meeting with is just me john kerry and susan rice the first kind of our plus was about syria and ukraine the two issues it had kind of dominated the descent of our relationship and putin was very tag mystic i remember he he had i caught some crazy line he used about john john brennan you know he's describing our effort to to support the opposition but not the terrorist elements position and he said you know you've asked john brennan to climb up of spruce street naked without getting a scratch on his ass and that's the kind of way that von putin could soon on speak you know at the end of that meeting obama pulled him aside just one on one with susan rice there and so i didn't hear the discussion but that's where they discussed the happening and obama you know essentially warned him you know we know what you're doing cut it out we can engage in retaliatory measures and but by then you know i think putin you know my my theory that i realized in the book is that when the governor ukraine the russian government ukraine collapsed in the face of protests that putin thought we were behind that i don't agree with that but he i think he really did believe that so he was income he thought ukraine was part of russia so he thought we were basically coming into russia okay meddling in russia's affairs so he was going to do a back and i i truly believe that that that was the breaking point for putin and and he basically took the information warfare capability that they had developed around ukraine and use to disseminate a lot of fake news about ukraine into discredit people and you just bought the.

"Of the documentary because that is a good point that you brought up a lot of people talk about him and talk about his works and have used his art in some of their projects yeah none of them were profiled none of them were talked about in this let me see so the the work that he was doing and he was one of the artists were showed like his old apartment every door every window the refrigerator door the floor had art on it because he would just he was one of those artists who wanted his inside of you you have to get it out one way or the other or it will drive you insane and so he just he would just put art everywhere around him and it was kind of cool so there there's a q and a with alexis adler after the film who was one of his partners back then and she was his roommate and they were together for a few years and she still has some of this art like she has a door that he did way back then how did he pass that was so this is another documentary that me going into this similar to how you were talking about pope francis somebody going into that not knowing the history is not really going to know they're not really going to get a lot of context with this i knew nothing about him going in and i still do not know much about him i feel like this documentary could have been renamed east side seventy eight relating to lower east side and nine hundred seventy eight in new york and it would have been fine like naming this as a basquiat documentary there are so many questions that me interested in the subject matter did not get answered i have no idea how he died i have no idea what his relationship with his family i have no idea it would there were so many unanswered questions and in a documentary that kind of.

"It just it it had no teeth like it felt like an extended sixty minutes piece jet were absolutely i'm just interviewing the pope and he's telling me about his own personal theology why being poor is bad in about well if they feel about homosexuality in charge and how we feel but here's my take on it and that a new thing and that was one aspects that i liked is because one of the things that pope francis has been getting under fire about it is his somewhat progressive liberal views so he talks about it but not these this is why we need to accept homosexual people and this is what i'm doing to do that it is my believe homosexuals should be welcomed in the church and blah blah as long as they're on their own faithbased journey there people of god blah blah but nut i believe this and this is a conclave i've put together that is working at no he just talks about it so i mean that was kinda rough this movie did give me the feels in quite a few parts mainly because i grew up as a catholic boy and so that is going to kind of get me right there but also some of it all the reenactments of of the other no i'm not there yet so parts of it took place in italy and i have been to that exact place where they were in assisi in italy in this tiny little church and had an incredible emotional experience while i was there but one thing that this film does that i do not use this word lightly i hated hated hated hated these reenactment things that they did where it was basically when it would talk about saint francis not pope francis but saint francis and where he came from it went into a black and white reenactment with actors would by itself okay sure kind of weird but not only did it do that as we were watching this black and white reenactment it has like that kind of staggered black and white film look from a film when you look at like nineteen twenties and thirties when the film was kind of you can basically see the film.

"Documentaries it is just something that i find fascinating because you know getting these little insight into people and places and really diving into it this documentary that we saw pope francis when tim and i came out of this one of the first words you know that i was saying we will not go into the way the dc mayor would describe this movie at least not on this podcast but this is just a fluff piece this documentary it talks about pope francis and what the and the activism he is doing now and the global ambassadorship that he is doing but for me pope francis is an incredible person as far as like what the what stories he could tell talking about the first pope from the southern or from the south american continent i mean he chose the name of a jesuit i mean or rather he is jeffrey chose the name of of francis from saint francis there's so many compelling aspects to who he is and all this and what a lot of this film focused on was what he does not who he is so like it opens with a thirteen i'm gonna stop you greg for a second okay it doesn't really focus on what he does it he talks about what he does talks about what he does end where he goes yeah it is really focused on that was my problem yeah folks because that's a way more interesting film if they're like here we do what we do a international day of prayer and this is why we do it and this is who comes here and this is why this is important that is like we do a national day of prayer and then we move onto the next conversation yeah yeah and it starts with the speech that he gave in nineteen ninety nine i mean almost a decade before he became pope and it was in brazil and he is talking about just the lessons and like i want more of that like why is this a pope francis documentary and we get like one clip of him in his younger years and not the stuff that he has been doing the past two years like this is a documentary where is that documentary feel and this.
