My Time Machine

"Who is not imagined at one time or another what it'd be like the time machine. Time is a fascinating concept, the idea of moving either forward or backward from the present moment has most likely occurred to each of us at one time or another. Quite possibly, the only time in our lives when this idea does not have appeal would be the very beginning of life for that brief period following our entry into the world appearances and behavior tend to confirm that our only goal is satisfaction our needs of the moment. As we get older, we become accustomed to wishing we could move their time especially into the future it is called play into the healthy part of a child's growth and development. We play at Greenwich Activities Like School. House and other pursuits that we've seen our world or on television or in the movies we might act out roles as cowboys and Indians cops and robbers, soldiers, pirates, or professionals such as athletes dancers. Each of these and numerous other activities make us dream about having your own time machine to take us to some point in the future we wish we had achieved right now. Adult in our lives eight in our participation in this time machine dreaming by asking what we want to be when we grow up. This dreaming occurs in the normal course of our lives. When you look ahead to things like summer vacation a family trip time camp as well as Christmas and birthdays. We can project our thoughts ahead and time dreaming of things like college or starting our careers marriage and having a family. When I first saw the movie back to the future I realized my fantasy time machine would not take me to some imagine future time. Instead I found myself wishing I could go into the past for me. It is not wishing I could go into some period in the distant past that I thought would be better than what I was experiencing at the present time. My dream for a time machine was one that would take me back in my own life to the time before had made a few decisions in my life I admit I have wanted the chance to make several decisions differently based on what I know. Now, none of these changes come from any deep regret over how my life has turned out. There are simply a few times when I would like to have had the chance to choose a different direction. As we move forward, we may want to consider that in life. We have a marvelous time machine. We have the amazing ability everything that has gone on in the past and a learned valuable lessons. The past has for us as we move into the future with hope and anticipation by seeing our movement through time. This way we can come to embrace every moment in every experience has it comes along. Life therefore is the amazing time machine. We have each been given, maybe learned to enjoy it more and more each day.

Candy Makers Try to Fight Off a Halloween Horror Show

"From wondering I'm David Brown and this is business words daily on this Thursday. July thirtieth. It may be the dog days of summer for most of us, but the folks at Hershey are already up to their necks in Halloween earlier this month Hershey announced it's Candy Lineup for horrors high holiday some of the ghoulish goodies include vampire themed Hershey, kisses stuff with red strawberry cream, and Reece's Franken cups which have a green creme dement flavored bottom. But the candy maker also has a haunting concern if covid nineteen continues to cancel in person celebrations what will Halloween Twenty Twenty look like Dad. Insult to injury the holiday falls on a Saturday this year. So little ferry princesses, pirates and ghouls could've stayed out later collecting more candy for their late night sugar rush without worrying about school the next day. Now it's unclear if people will be comfortable handing out goodies to trick or treaters at all, even with ample squirts of hand sanitizer in between. So Hershey is hedging its bets in an earnings call last week CEO. Michelle said the company is reducing production of Halloween, themed candy to avoid. Pirates' Derek Holland ejected for arguing with umpire from stands

"I I read a story for them. I watching this Apparently. You ever watch baseball When you know there's an argue of a strike or a ball and out, the manager comes running out, right gets face to face for the empire. Even you see, you've seen that right? Apparently. At one of the baseball games. I guess the umpire. I guess he is He is. Ah, Karen Massacre Right or a mass. Karen. He happened to see a couple of players. Sitting in the stands. I remember nobody is allowed in the stands is no fans, So a couple of players were just sitting in the stands where nobody is. But they weren't wearing masks. So the umpire Through the player out of the game. Because he was not sitting With a mask on he Apparently the players are not allowed in the stands. Even though nobody's allowed in this stands. You can't get any more socially distance from this. The pirates and the Cardinals are playing. And AH Pirates pitcher Derek Holland was just like just sitting in one of the The seeds and the empty stands and the home plate umpire Jordan Baker saw this and said You're out of here. Throw him out. And if that wasn't bad enough, right, So you're throwing out a guy sitting by himself in the stands where nobody else is. Right. Nobody else's there. What is he stealing signs? I mean, whatever he's just sitting there. So the manager Of the Pirates came out to go argue Funniest thing. He had to run out and pull the cloth mask above us above his mouth. And he and the hope and the whole plate umpire takes off his catcher's mask. Whatever you know the protective mask and puts on his surgical mask. And he used to be back in the day. The manager get Toto inches from their face and yell at each other. Now they have two socially distance. You see the home plate umpire and the manager, yelling at each other from like four or five feet apart. And then at one point, you see the whole bump higher, like, just see, must have said something to the manager. The manager then pulls the bandanna thing. Whatever over his nose, he only his mouth covered, not his nose. Course Their eyes were wide open, right? So now in baseball, the managers are arguing from a socially distance. 345 feet. We're All in the Same Storm But Not in the Same Boat

"You may have seen them facebook. Instagram meam or all the means that twitter mean about the pandemic? It's the one that says we are not all in the same boat, but we are in the same storm. I heard. People say that I heard people say. Well, at least we're all in the same boat. In fact, I think I have said it. But you know the pandemic quickly exposed the hard facts that, despite dealing with the same storm quote, unquote. We are all riding it out in very different boats. Summer and yet! Some fishing boat, and some are hanging on for dear life as they fly roughly down a series of rapids on an overturned canoe. We are not in the same boat. You know some are enjoying a pause in their frenetic lives. binge-watching net flicks some are still employed, and maybe even T- making more money than before, but others are working two jobs and trying to home school their kids. Some of already buried loved ones and others are still fighting for their lives. And some are fighting for their freedoms. Some are zooming happy hours with friends every day and others are watching their child through a pane of glass at the hospital or waving from a sidewalk to a loved one in a nursing home. Some are angry. Some are board. Some are lonely. Summer terrified. Some are trapped inside with someone who is abusive. The pandemic quickly exposed the deep inequities. People live with every day. INEQUITIES! Of Income. Education. And Opportunity? Inequalities that fall disproportionately on those of collar are black and Brown brothers and sisters. As a white person I do not pretend to know how the constant challenges caused by having another skin color can change the way you're able to live. Can, take opportunities away. Can threaten your ability to make a living threaten your health and your life. But all these things that are swirling about us right now in this. Swirling see of uncertainty. Are Questions really and I? Don't have answers. And as we teaching Buddhism, it is about sitting with the questions sitting with the uncertainty. Sitting with fear. Anger and even rage every day during these unbelievably awful times I realized I am becoming a different person. Each new experience I sit with is a learning moment for me to grow and change and be challenged to evolve. Is learned to meditate in the morning every day, breathing and feeling my body and mind alive in what is in my own present moment. Listening to birds at sunrise, and enjoying the smells and sounds of the morning in the yard and garden. In doing that, I realized I was happy and grateful. Yet the pandemic still exists yet yet civil unrest -rageous You may have heard this quote by Tibidot Han. WHO said quote when the crowded Vietnamese refugee boats met with storms or pirates? If everyone panicked, all would be lost. But, if even one person on the boat remained calm and centered, it was enough. It showed the way for everyone to survive unquote. These are the questions to ask ourselves during these times. Questions to help us remain centered, and that picked up and carried off by fear anxiety. Anger. Rage ask yourself. What does it mean to you to be calm and centered? ASK YOURSELF IN TIMES OF TROUBLE? Can you embrace what you are feeling? Ask Yourself. How did you survive a fearful experience or one of complete? Before.

Content Creators Prepare for Possible US Ban on Tiktok

"Actually do lurk on to talk a little bit. Through the web truth. Out. I haven't installed the APP. Don't have an account, but I do like. Are you clicking on twitter that what it is on Instagram so somebody will post a tiktok video to twitter, and then I'll click through a watch it and then I'll see what else is showing me and something that I've noticed especially like in the last couple of weeks. Is that when I watched the most popular videos? The ones that have like tens of thousands hundreds of thousands of different engagement metrics. Is that the creators will often like start or end the video by saying like Joe This be shutting down so goes subscribe to my youtube. You know and wondering like. Going to happen are these creators who also have a presence on Youtube had they set up a presence on Youtube, or is it the other way around like the youtubers who are using Tiktok? Because it's the hotter platform I think it's the former so i. think it's that they are proactively trying to make sure that some of their audience has another way of reaching them, but I think. Think it's kind of like for a lot of these creators that take Takashima the main outlet that they have, but if you're Superfan, will also follow the money, instagram or like. If you liked the two minute, they put on tectonic like you can go watch the monetize ten minute video on Youtube, but those I think are kind of for super fans a lot of times when I. I click on a talk creators instagram profile. It will say like Hey, like I have five hundred dollars on Tiktok like hey, if you found me from Tiktok, like follow me here so I. Definitely think it's not really that they grew their platform elsewhere. A lot of them are too young. I think people forget that like instagram is really liked driven by your existing Social Network Youtube is. Is the videos are the wrong way? You know it's very desktop driven, so if you are used to making stuff on your phone, it doesn't really make sense. It's not super obvious how to kind of translate that to other platforms as his early of course, plenty of them do, but I think that Tiktok sort of is something different now one wants to watch a ten second dancing. On Youtube really one of the things that's unique about tiktok to. You is just the way people are actually encouraged to copy each other I. Don't know if copying word exactly, but they're encouraged to like participated in the judge meet. Challenge, do some version of it or interpretation of it, and so now I've watched like dozen videos of people you know holding their cat to their ears and going up. The Queen is coming right. You're not going to experience it the same way without seeing the TIKTOK but like. People do really creative different interpretations, and that's one of the things that I really like whereas I think. If you see twelve of the same videos on Youtube, you're like okay, who? WHO's stealing whose idea here? I think people forget is a kind of early on people describe. Tiktok this way, but everyone kind of forgot it is that it's like Youtube, but with spotify in right, so they were really smart to like have these relationships with the record labels? There's also been problems with pirated content, but they made these relationships with me musical artists and with labels that. That you have those sound clips right like that was a huge part of it that you don't have on youtube usual. Silence your video. Keep trying to take some music right like it's a very different environment where that's not really part of it, yeah, the sound clips are huge i. don't know about you, but I definitely have brain worms from them just. So speaking of other platforms if Tiktok his. Does this end up. Meaning more power for Facebook, buy Instagram, considering how much facebook already rules are social existences while they're also going to release this new APP that's Tiktok knockoff called reels. So we will see if that has any traction. I think that it's more likely to have traction if To talk is bad, and there was also some activity from the founders of vine that they got a boost in new users recently because people came to their new APP bite. because. They thought that Tiktok was going to be banned. So people are getting a little bit more into bite, so yeah, I do think there's a chance that this ends up being kind of a boon for tic talks, competitors and you're Mark Zuckerberg loves to talk about how scary China is. So I think these companies are aware of how can use the situation to their advantage.

I taught that it's just a third party API like you know you have like you know where your schedule. The in everything I thought that may be compromised, and that's how they got author. Riley said No. We have everything. A screen chart I tweeted screen shot, and after that is blue. Well and so, who are these people? who were the people involved in the actual twitter hack? The difficult to identity like frankly I don't know I can speculate, but obviously because someone security and privacy I don't want to speculate but I can tell you wanting like college. Kids are maybe like someone between eight, eighty, twenty, one, twenty, two, and they are video gamers. They'd metaphor armed, and they found fascinating for them. Dislike a game like you go into video game on you killing you do stuff for them. It's like that. They, probably living in some way or radio patterns right now in basement. Who does not even know anything? and. They just do it for fun. Obviously, money's there, too, but most of fun for them is just a today. And so originally. The way you got in touch with them was they were targeting these different cell phone accounts, and what does motivation and taking over the different cell phone accounts so for account you can actually to when people take account, they can actually destroy you financially emotionally ended up recently, though by financial I can say they can get into your county bank accounts ticket by Tiptoe through that they can buy a lot of levels of securities financially they can do. obviously going to facebook in an email to, and then they donor all information from your facebook, and then they start blackmailing you that. Hey, likely when a lot you have done this like you know you have this. And you have to pay me this information out there and a lot of people would have to pay them the money because they don't pay the money. They looted operation right so and then third party. They just become Parson Mike is the word processing me. blender used to take my county new. They cannot get anything, but they wanted to talk to me. Just fun for them like people. Some people are sick. Like how did they pick you out of all the different people that they could torture also the league, if not just me like everyday hundreds of people to get them soft, though I'm just one of them on average, every second medical become victim of since up, not himself but cybercrimes so. But I had the impression that this was primarily targeting crypto currency people, but you're saying it's any bundled nor I think eighty percent of people who was himself to an entrepreneur L.! And the new in the cases of those people is it like personal vendettas that they're trying to? You can make more money by a hacking Lord cell than anything else you know. is one thing but Lloyd is like one number one target Loyd and has professionals league doctor medical doctor then. In Lord other number one targets in suffers, and what is the motivation for targeting lawyers Don. Money don't happen. How do they monetize that Yeah, so I tell you doctors, basically busy less tech, savvy and rich. It's that easy to find out any doctor information. You can find out who the best doctor in the city and you consume. Stop Him. And once you get into that account, you can transfer money between accounts who can be that people have been? Going into the count, Simpson calling the bank making via transfer, and then just checking accounts. That's pretty common. For for doctors to clinics have a lot of money. If you'RE GONNA clinic, instead he did even like five hundred hundred million dollar distorted the front because Alaska. Election for them. Okay, so let's go back to the twitter hack. They were some names that were identified of people who are involved these names. In The New York Times article that quoted you as a source one was kirk. There were some other people ll and ever so anxious. Who were these people? And how did they know each other? So they don't. Know the Best Birdie. They just hang out on rooms like chatting channels lake similar people on developed talked with you. The pirates channels. We had people a go if they WANNA have information to the document industry for finding information. If I want someone associated Gordon dissipates on one. Don't get call for these people trade information. And you asked about like a leg. Imagine your lawyer and you are fighting for my open kiss. We begin go to the website by that long since he will. They are who they're talking to the day can. Make some delays on them. That's one thing but other than that. These people are just a game as they would play like you know different video games and kick the die, who was basically a source of the rate industry rock says they'll be extra agents, and they are in room for longtime and David. Obviously you want you want something you don't trust the new guy. The new guy who is basically the main culprit punching the entity because multiple reasons, but the main guidance, the just which had A. Reputation. If you say you want a username of Laura at Laura, Shannon inactive. You may not trust kick, so you can do this. Middle Diane Tell Them Hey, can you hold the money for because you have a good relation? Because like Ebid forums generally have a petition systems. You know so then you ve into this guy like you know every inch it He went to care. Concur depended he the credit employees but I. Don't think he was employees. And, then he gave him the concert start building. So this is just a middleman. He was just broken deals. You tell them what you want. He was just keep his car and transfer the money. The is completed that fall. And so so kirk was was saying that he was a twitter employees, but as you said, you don't think that he was, and he was essentially selling valuable twitter accounts, and if people didn't trust, Kirk, they would use ever so anxious as their middleman to get the different twitter handles that they wanted. Is that what happened? That's correct. Good Gig, only unharmed on in July of. July it was very recently. that. He actually came so obviously not trust someone admit. That soon. July seventh in the New York Times article are. Limited okay, but all right so but ever so anxious. How to longer reputation and. And that was who people are transacting with. And so then. How did BITCOIN come into this? All. On these things happen through Bitcoins, so the way it started was they were selling. This twitter handles four bitcoin and then later. How did the scam change? So I. Personally is what I personally think. That kid was in touch with the employees who was giving these accounts. For a few thousand dollars. And then. Either bribed him. Architects. Social Engineering Him. Legs because like hey can do. This is my. This is purely my speculation that you're working for so long. He warned the trust. Any may have said Hey, can you log in forbid I wanNA see how it looks like something that he made it something so the guy is pasta on. Hey, just do it, but don't do anything crazy. You Know Butt kicked. Decide Okay, man I can just go on or can also go online with I can do it I can. Can also go on like you know. All those accounts crazy. That's what I okay, but you're just speculating. You don't have any proof that or or do you know what? I don't have any proof of that I don't approve. Have critic probably do it? And Kirk? Is probably a guy called coup, which is on a farm for a long time, so he speculated that he someone that was in the industry for wide, but not. Approved that. Kicked it, but from all the action than everything it all points to cook. Irene so in a moment we're gonNA. Talk a little bit more about what happened. Exactly I, in sight, twitter and scam, but First a quick word from the sponsors who make this show possible. How much in fees are you paying? Back to my conversation with his Heeb Awan. So, we don't know exactly how. Kirk got into twitter's internal systems. However Once. He or she did then what'd he do or or she do with their power? So. Kirk than they went to buy I think. Start with by notes I'm coin base. And the see your finance and he made it account Egypt first of all. What did it was did with other? Account. Okay, which means when you log in, it asks you to do a second type of security, which is hopefully. If you're in the crypto space, you have used something like Hugo, authenticate or key, and you're not using text message based second factor authentication. Where they sent a code your phone because otherwise if he gets swaps than than having no. Buyer so. Removed that and then keep going good thing. They added wall a secondary second. You know Autodata so now. I'll give example like you have my username seep, so they moved to a FE, and they're also removed. Jane, Email. And then they. Did possible reset. So the new email guard, the chain deposited garden the account. and. tweeted whatever they wanted. Well, and what were they tweeting? So, they were tweeting that you know. About Co. Ed Nineteen I believe like you know because of Covid, we like helping people. I don't remember the wording. Health Has Something and they said Back. And this is video any comments in YouTube. Actually they were so good that frankly sometime I get like you know Oh my God like the able to make it like a secondary thing. That's real you know and like, but this happens pretty commonly, and and it's happening for almost two years now i. It, really is the kind of thing where people think it's real I honestly. Had created a question for you, which is who are the people who are savvy enough to own bitcoin and know how to send it, but not savvy enough to spot. What to me seems like an obvious scam. Actually went on the Internet and are tweeted out this thing same thing I said like who are those people who can have sophisticated enough to buy Bitcoin, but knowledge to. Send. Bitcoin but I think leap Dick's everything. Like I agree people think okay. Let's give it a chance. You know it's like a lottery ticket. You know people may be, but they think what if this is true and other than that. If you like an must happening there, actually flaunted, be efforts on twitter. All the time with people are donating money on twitter, but they don't ask for anything they say hey, can you give me your Alfred Egland who this every day, so he will dollars to off fifty dollars for every person everyday. You'll say. Retreat this. I'll give you this money. So this happens right now and obviously As hit audible, read like you know when viewed come in people, people forget everything that you know. We have so many Ponzi scheme like so many scattered that happened that exist today could if I come to unity Laura investment scheme, which is a pretty good you know. He hit all the MACHIDA. But it only gives you five percent. You may not listen to that. Say Hey, Lord the Child who may tennis money tomorrow. You may skip everything. Cocaine is thousand and ten dollars tomorrow. Okay I'll take the risk from doing that. Hopefully I'm sure my listeners are savvy enough to know if it sounds too good to be true. But people do that I. Think I have estimated that around like maybe I. Just in this journal given us cam like. He put a lot of tens of millions of dollars and well not last week, but no, not over time overtime. Yeah, yeah, we'll be sending money, so there are enough food. I guess yeah over I mean for last week. The hackers did net about a little over thirteen bitcoin, which was about one hundred twenty thousand dollars, although analysts said that about twenty, thousand of it seems to have come from a suspicious address that they actually think controlled by the hackers to kind of make it look like this was legit and people were actually sending money. But then also by the way they could have netted more. However, Cuevas said that it did prevent more than one thousand customers from sending about two hundred and eighty thousand dollars worth of Bitcoin to the twitter hackers so oriented, so let's talk a little bit also about just what happened in twitter which was? Twitter blog posts. Hackers a targeted. Thirty accounts for forty five of those they reset the password and sent tweets from those accounts for eight of them. They actually downloaded that counts data, and then for thirty sixty legitimate direct message inbox, including one elected official from the Netherlands, and it was who. What do you think they could do with such information? I think it's A. Black, man that I've been talking to you about what happened with sin sopping. Let's think about it if you have first all that fool Phoolan that why didn't put? It wasn't like planned. I don't believe it was just like in the move in the heat of happened. BANDAIDS slaves. They clearly guy who just got drunken pretty might do everything but I think if you have access to like anyone, social media, proper social media like I have been I've received. Messages. And I but I don't believe that I think we have forged around. Believe the electoral, so, but if you have someone should media that maybe confidential information that can be misused by Stacey when leg if you do about it on dedic messages, a you know that's not confident that even with the journalist visceral broads. You know so I. Don't know who the information was. What fast, but that's video very very concerning and I believe this may happen on facebook or other social media from his. Because to same. Attack Factor. Yeah I definitely think that this is. One of those cases where it makes you want to just use encrypted social messaging APPS. Such as like signal or something, maybe what's up? So, let's just also talk a little bit about what we said before about how the hackers were able to remove two factor authentication on these accounts. Well, actually what they did I was. They changed the email address. And then the chain Laras Oh, actually bid on a there was A. There was an email. There was a blog post by somebody who had the at six twitter account, and they said they believed that the hackers change the address, but that when that happened, it did not send a notification to the original email address, but not I don't know if this person was surmising, you know six hundred interest in history, those belong to a hacker. Their the community of Hackers Gobi Twenty six hundred. That's like a court for hackers right. Not a quarterback, just like community for hackers and you were the hacker who ended up homeless anywhere. They will do attack into I think he would to. And he went into multiple you as homeless, but he was a hacker. And oxygen community belong to sixty name. Is this secretly off? I believe his name. And, but yes, but I think the first drift was removed and then. moved. To the letter. Control of it now thought it was the reverse, but either way. In Like for any of us who are in the crypto space who have been? Keeping up with our security and using things like Google. or UB and avoiding. Text message based to a or or any kind of to a based on our phone number. What? Can we take away from this like? Is there any advice that you have for Crypto? People on how they can protect themselves if the services that we use have loopholes like this. Let's not that'll be biased in obviously you know. Will. Finding here, but that's what we do, right. We work, but a lot. Actually I am surprised at how many a compromise them security argue out stocking some customer yesterday and they do You know an extra seat is probably the most I can tell you I know. We are making like a faces, but at same part exit. She's most prominent used offer manager for probably ninety ninety nine percent of the word. What would you recommend instead? There's something at one time I have statistics, said ninety five percent of people who are like major changes. Do not have to a fait. Travel to Brittany France

"Today, the amateur traveler talks about walled towns and standing stones, beaches, and folk festivals, pirates, and you boats as we go to Brittany in France. Welcome to the amateur traveler I'm your host Chris? Christensen. Let's talk about Britney. I'd like to welcome to the show Kristen Montgomery from growing global citizens dot com who come to talk to us about the region of France known as Brittany Kristin welcome to the show. Thanks Chris and I want to say the Duchy of Brittany, but that's really not the term anymore so. It's definitely part of France officially where we talking about. So Britney is located in north western France, and as you said, it used to be a duchy, but in the fifteen hundreds it was incorporated as part of France basically taken over a against their will, so there's still a very strong regional identity. There are some people that still identify as being brought tone before their French slump. And why should someone go to Britney? Britney is a place that is not usually on lots of travelers lists. Obviously, if you're going to head to France, you think of Peres you think of southern France provence or niece, but there are a lot of really great things to see in Britannia, Britney there are beautiful beaches first of all, and it's actually sand beaches, unlike the rocky beaches that you find down south. It's a great place for a multi generational trip. So if you're traveling with family, it would be an excellent place to visit because it's a little bit less touristy, less crowded. There are more things to do that are in small towns out in the country. And it has this Celtic identity like I said the the Britain identity that really is not found in any other place in France, and so you're going to be hearing things like bagpipes for music. You're going to be seeing traditional dancing, even some of the Breton, language. and. I found that people here were really very very friendly. which is something that I hate to say, but sometimes and other parts of France especially, you think of Paris. They don't really have the reputation of being very friendly, but people here really took the time to be able to chat. And if you're someone that likes history or is into myths and legend Brittany has a lot of that, too. Excellent. What Are you going to recommend for us? So I would recommend starting in Ren, ren is in the eastern part of Brittany. And you can fly in, or you can take the train. The TJ evade from Paris. It's about an hour and forty five minutes. There are international flights into rent from other places in Europe, but I don't think there are any from the US or from north. America directly. If you're looking for a place, that would have more connections. That would be a bigger city. You can also fly into note, which is farther south and not officially right now is no longer part of Brittany in the administrative region, but it was part of that she. And there is a quite a bit to see there, too. So I won't talk about that today, but that's another option if you want more connections. And, so for the itinerary like I said you're going to start in Rin and then most of the things to see our along the coast, so you're basically going to do a clockwise circle, and you can go all the way around following the coast and then get back to ren okay. Excellent we'll let's jump in a little more detail. What are we going to Iran before we head to the coast? Okay so. Is the cultural capital of Brittany to university town, and it's really easy to get around. I will mention that you're gonNA. WanNa rent a car to be able to do this. Because there are a lot of small towns that you're going to want to be able to go in and out of. But when you're in rent itself, you don't need a car. They actually have a great metro and it's the smallest city in France to have metro. And this one is driverless also so it goes both underground and above ground, and it was really clean and safe and efficient, so that was that was something that I didn't really expect, but it was a very pleasant surprise. So, Ren is known for its half timber houses, which is funny, because that really I think we're on the other end of France over and. Also as lorraine or something like that when I see the half timber houses, yes, exactly that part of France and then Germany to places where you usually think of those, but it's very much native to the architecture here and I believe it's done in a slightly different way, but I'm not positive about that, but the half timber houses are usually the first level is stone, and then on top of that they're usually three or four other levels that have these big pieces of wood, and then they're deaf clan of plaster or mud in between them. When they're all different colors, and so when you see them all together for example, plastic undone. It's a big square where you can see this architecture and Ren, and some of these are incredibly old. They're dating from the fifteenth to Seventeenth Century. All the way back in the Middle Ages incredibly old by American standards is an exactly. Yes, thank you. Yes. It's all relative actually in Renton. They're kind of pockets of these and the reason. There aren't more is because like many other places. There was a big fire in seventeen twenty, and so many of them were destroyed, and so part of the town has this much older architecture and part of the town has more modern architecture. And another thing you're want to see. Is the Britain parliament building and like I said Brennan kind of the. Of Brittany, and so this parliament building originally had a little bit more autonomy than it does now now. It's really part of France, but they still do some court cases here it's it's basically a court of Appeals. The architecture that's there is beautiful. Especially, the grown Sean Code they have paintings and tapestries in there. It's all Gold Leaf. I believe the

"pirates" Discussed on The Daily Beans

"It's it's an ethics thing and so <hes> what's interesting is. Is that the let's see dem senator. Tom udall has sent a letter to the interiors. There's ethics officials wednesday asking them to provide copies of all the ethics filings made by balaj and any notifications of his negotiations for future employment or compensation because this is really really anti anti-ethical apathetic. No painters take on this rampage him. He's a con man. I love him so much. Yeah definitely yeah that is not sound good and and this isn't new to scott pruitt left his post at the e._p._a. He got a job consulting for coal magnet magnate donate three weeks after leaving the interior department vince devito. An energy counselor got a job with cox oil offshore which operates in the gulf of mexico so this is just drain the swamp. Oh yeah right okay <hes> yeah and those those companies those are privatized companies right yep all of them then that just get like a bunch of government contracts ex yeah yeah when ted cruz and <hes> a._f._c. had their twitter moment talking about a bill that would ban politicians from going into lobbying. Do you think it would be extended to stuff like that. It's hard to regulate the private sector no but i think that yeah i think i but you could regulate the government officials saying you can't work for anything anything you worked on those rules already exists but only an ethical sense not an legal sense in the you could make rules that gave those <hes> route you know you can make the laws that gave those rules some teeth with you know maybe penalties or punishments <hes> for doing that because it's it's unethical but these are norms that have always been followed and they're just being shit should all over now yeah yeah 'cause the the lobbying group obviously is a first step to stop them before being able to go into lobbying directly after being representative but the private sector has so much influence over government and politics right now it may as well be lobbying anymore laws. "The dossier when he was head of the house intelligence committee someone had the source law nunez also suing twitter and to troll accounts <hes> and mcclatchy dc who owns the fresno bee for hundreds of millions liens of dollars hundreds of millions of dollars for what amounts to defamation. He says you're mean to me on twitter and they're trying to detroit is trying to dismiss the case twitter located in and <hes> you know northern california. You're famous case in virginia <hes>. It's just all really dumb so me northern california. We'll settle this shit. The the weather's better yeah. It's also mcclatchy owns. The fresno bee like it's just all reporting and he is just a giant deterred so <hes> on jamie. That's sure that's okay thank you. They should be shamed. Manafort has filed a motion to dismiss. His new york state charges citing double jeopardy. We knew this was going to happen. We beans on this so manafort's lawyers told reuters about the filing which intends to test the state's double jeopardy protections protections. His lawyers contend that the charges are tied to the same crimes he was convicted of in federal courts under new york law. A person cannot be tried twice for the same crime unless at least as one element of the crime is different and the statutes address very different kinds of harm or evil and new york could argue sivan's could argue that such an exception is warranted in this case and additionally <hes> new york could argue that the hung counts the ten hung counts <hes> in the manafort trials the one manafort trial <hes> ah they relate to citizens bank and four of the counts relate to federal savings bank and loan which could open the door for another prosecution because those those are the banks in question here in the new york case for mortgage fraud and falsifying business documents so since those counts were hung. They're saying this isn't double jeopardy. He wasn't convicted on these counts. I have beans on the judge dismissing some of the charges but not all of them because legal experts have said that at least a portion of the case <hes> double jeopardy doesn't apply at all <hes> so it'd be funny if one of our fans can make a mean it's like double jeopardy and just manafort as fuck you know like solving the puzzle one of those just mad afford standing there yeah yeah okay. You got the daily double jeopardy. I find it <hes> that would be surprising to me if the arguments that he wasn't convicted thus there's it's not double jeopardy here if that stands because in that case then you could just kind of go to trial take somebody to trial until they do get convicted yeah and it depends too if the counts were dismissed with or without prejudice right because when the whole when the ten counts and we're we're you know 'cause they convicted on eight were hung on because a one person <music> the rural juror <hes> then you know do you take those ten because muller could have prosecuted them again and i think if muller could have then i think that it means new york can too so i think that they were dismissed without prejudice which means it can be brought up again. I i might have that right on my have that wrong. If not we have a whole correction section you can taylor. She wrote dot com. It's good for both shows.

"Now. It's my mom's mom and she's in a memory care unit and obviously i don't get to share is many moments with her anymore because she's very sick and it is a horrible disease and one of the worst ways you can watch a human being lose. I don't wanna say lose fade away sort of slowly over. It's a very slow long for long death. That's what it is and it's horrifying. It's so fucked up for everybody around and it gave me a special different kind of i also watch taylor's lose. Her grandma alzheimer's <hes> four five years ago from a very first hand perspective. I never seen anybody dying before and in it is something i'd found dead body before which i told her i remember the story on a shot episode like ten to yeah real i. I found a dead body before but i'd never i'd never been in a room with somebody who's actively dying and it is it is something. I don't know if that's something i'd ever want to experience. It's something <hes> you probably will at some point. I think we all probably have to at some point. It is a brutal thing but all that is to say alzheimer's and the way to fix is just if you if if i had to throw out a random here's a 'cause you could go support today outside of obviously giving blood and and trying to help the victims of horrific violence in our world i would say <hes>. Would i say j what was i saying. You're about to bring up a supporting alzheimer ahead one of my brain brain farts. Oh thank you. I would supporting the movement. Get out and find a way to contribute to the the alzheimer's research community or give money to alzheimer's research anyway. You grandparents are incredibly important. They offer a ton of wisdom in in in perspective that you don't have to go back to a point earlier about your conversation with your grandfather father yeah. There's nothing like when an elderly person gives you advice like that especially a grandparent that really makes it's like a wake-up call. <hes> it really makes you realize is like hey. I gotta change like something's got a something's gotta give here. There's wait. There's more weight to hearing something like that from somebody who has look look at that point. I'm sitting on the couch that man. He's done right for the most part. He's accomplished all the most difficult things in life. He has made made a career for himself. He's built a home for himself. He created a family from self yet three kids. His kids ed kids. He's three levels deepened his family's the patriarch he's moving towards retirement etc. He's enjoying his golden year. That dude doesn't need or omi anything. I'm here because of him and he he still took the time to sit down in explain to me what he thought i needed to hear to snap out of it especially you saying that he was a man of few words then he actually had a conversation with you about that. Yeah holds weight in it so did and that's very important and it's so important for for it's such a it's that doesn't fit in my world right like anyone who knows me knows that i like to talk the fact that turned into careers still shocking to me but i'm a talker i. I've always been a talker. It used to be that i'd get blackout drunk and that's when i do my talking and understand what you were saying that sometimes i probably didn't make much sense apologies to all the people who had to over the course. There's like ten years there. Listen to me speak drunk. I don't know if you understand me. I understood me. I was having a hell of a time but i've always been a talker if you let me talk in a conversation if if we have a serious serious conversation you'd better come with points because if you don't start talking i will talk the entire time it's part of it's partially anxiety thing because it makes me feel better right common defense mechanism and a lot of ways to just a related to what you're saying sharing in some ways. It can be yeah it. It can can be a defense mechanism..

"To forget to include the staples in in time crunches and such and thank you my my point is thank you because it really inspired me to remember what what the point is here. What i'm trying to what i wanted to do with the show was always be able to do exactly this. Go from talking mass shootings two <hes> silly pirates segment because i believe that's the show the world world needs is the ability to go from very serious topics too light hearted in funny shit that doesn't necessarily matter so much roller coaster ride. That's the way life works a lot roller coaster of emotions. Yeah you gotta be able to handle this shit so today. We're bringing back bad ass pirates. You haven't heard of in his name the one we're going with oh by the way sam w. W is the guy that got me hooked up with this pirate today. Sam thank you for the suggestion today. As bad as pirate you haven't heard of is henry every okay his last name's every which is a real bummer 'cause very intimidating no and when you're reading about him stoned. It's literally spelled e. v. e. r. y. Which looks like the the word every and so when his last name is used at the beginning of sentences of okay i see he gets really confusing the word a._m. Like every every who every what right oh every it was anyway. Point is very confused and smoke weed and research pirates unless you're equipped to do so. I'm not sometimes he was arana's. Erroneously ashley erroneous on all counts sometimes erroneously named jack avery or john avery he was in english pirate in his name was henry every every any operated in the atlantic and indian oceans in the mid sixteen ninety s. That's quite a long time ago. I can't do the math quickly. Cleveland certainly been hundreds of years. He probably you several aliases throughout his career. The other one's side from jack avery john benjamin bridgman see i like that that sounds like a pirate name. I'm playing pirate video game in the avatar pops up and says name yourself next time. I'm i'm going with benjamin bridge. Bridgman can't even say it easily <hes> he was also known as long binh to his crewmen and associates. We all know why those was hanging. We know why they call them. Long been slang in the fuck. You get the nickname long been when your actual name is henry. Every man is due. You must've been next level because you're a piece but somebody looked at it and when dude you've seen henry's cock that's been that's what we call big dicks through now on bins. That motherfucker has been on him anyway. The point is his real name is henri every he was dubbed the arch pirate and at another time. Apparently i don't know how you get two things the king of pirates that's a bold statement. Yo that's the nickname you want. Pirate yes every was infamous for being one of the few major pirate captains to escape with his loot without being arrested or killed in battle and for the being the perpetrator of what it has been called the most profitable act of piracy in history which is big. Obviously we're gonna talk about that so although every career ear as a pirate and this is what's funny pirating. It turns out not a long winded career. Most of these guys didn't go twenty years on on the high seas. You get a couple of years. It's like being a running back in the n._f._l. Then you got that yes you either get arrested or you. You find your smart enough to escape gabe into hiding which no one does every. It's like being a drug dealer right from the black plague or you die from the black plate but it's like the scarface thing like look. It's always the conundrum with illegal activities. Did you have great success and you get you and you gain great wealth as a result of that great success in that illegal enterprise. No one in the history of illegal enterprise has the wherewithal to pull allow out before it's too late literally every gangster story yes..

"Fear leads to frustration leads to anger or leads to hate which in some cases clearly leads to mass shootings and sure if you sprinkle in some mental illness with a dash of broken mental health care and at the very least would have to be defined as weird gun control laws at a national level then that certainly doesn't help things but we can't treat any of that other shit without first treating the root of the issue the fundamental flaw the baseline sickness and clearly there is a substantial lack of understanding between between us as human beings at the most basic level in whether that lack of understanding is due to inexperience with people people that come from other ethnic backgrounds or walks of life or a failure to free to think freely instead choosing to just take on the t._v. Narratives from you know quote unquote news channels that are probably financed by morally bankrupt lobbyists and applying those thoughts and feelings and takes says your own excuse me in some cases it could be a lack of education or just terrible parenting or in some cases all all of those things combined that should has to be treated before we have a chance in hell of solving the intensely complex issues plaguing our nation today if we don't start to come together if we don't find a way to actually start listening to each other's issues and differences and he'll with one another and start to pick up the pieces this slowly but surely we're fucked. I guess we can continue to keep screaming at each other and killing each other. They're over over red and blue and black and white and green and all the other codes the fucking rainbow but i would ask can we please for the love of all that is good and decent. Stop doc making this about politics. Stop immediately getting on twitter and firing off your political takes and try something new. "Pro what i'm confused anyway. It seems like it looks like there's some type of there's a reason for this. Is that what you think it would make sense. Yeah that is that is interesting. I'm going to have to look into that. Some more. I had no idea honestly it's funny because the victoria's secret fashion show as a show in general doesn't doesn't play in two thousand nine hundred anyway unless you're gonna what makes you say that it's just forty <hes> six foot tall one hundred and eight pound <hes> you know models with great tits and great ashes. It's that's not a normal women's body image. Let's bring that up because i think one of the points they made in there was alive. Critics have said that this show displays women it does in a light to where it's like. It's not unattainable beauty. Oh yeah things the way they put it if you were we're gonna women. These women are perfect. I don't typically buy into this whole narrative about like showing a bunch of beautiful women together is bad for the world because it makes other women look at those women compare themselves like if you put a whole budget on stage and they've got six packs in great bodies and huge cavs. I'm not looking at this stage but i also also get that. Everybody's different all right like maybe my self image in body issues and i've got my own set of problems that being said i get it. <hes> it doesn't really makes sense to have one body type seemingly presented as the perfect body type represented on stage in what is the grandest fashion show in the united states it every year i get it. I get how that could be perceived as <hes> an issue. It's not that i don't see it as a damn. This is a hell of a thing to lose. Oh yeah definitely dude me and my friends naive and just me and my boys like girls to we would all get together every year to watch the yes we will get a couple of twelve packs packs beer wings like an actual treated like a sporting event yeah and we watch the whole thing and it was just one of those one of those things where you just watched. It was like a social event. It was a point about it on twitter yeah. It was a point in college where like it turned into people would have victoria's secret fashion show viewing parties yeah and like the girls will wear like lingerie and shit. It's honestly pretty common taboo. No no that was the greatest night of the year. You know we used to do this last thing. I'll say about victoria's the secret before we move on <hes> when we were in college. I had like you know few different sets of roommates over the years. Some guys went to different. We lived in a house at one point within apart anyway. Point is this we had a d._v._r. Right that went from place to place like the d._v._r. Was in a house that we lived in when we moved to our next place. I took it with me. 'cause we use the same cable company sure that d._v._r. A._p._r. carried on it each three or four sets of <hes> victoria's secret fashion shows what we would do we'd we'd d._v._r. Him that night and obviously watch and and then whoever needed to watch would watch whenever they needed is is as as <hes> cranks became necessary or whatever it would sit on our d._v._r. For the course of the year but then what we'd do is we'd get home blackout drunk from the bars or like people to wear whatever over and we throw it on and let like pit bull or bruno mars or whatever fucking musical guests they had that taylor swift riana yeah we let them be our background music for the after party and you'll get a crank off no or weed or we'd mute it and play our own music and just let it sort of serve as like background eye candy for the after part oh and then get a crank call and then we'd get a crank off as a squad to like everybody in a circle called the rookie cookie so the beatles used to do it is so they made their music. Nobody ever talks not talks about that that that's the thing that was the creative i i just want to say..

"Cleveland how they're on the down on the decline for a while but now things are looking ok really are live the cleveland browns. They're projected to like win the division and go onto the playoffs you how weird team team is stacked. I don't know if you've been following. The like op rejected the. I'll make a prediction right now. We'll do an n._f._l. Predictor the cleveland browns sounds are gonna win at least nine games this season man. I was worried you were going to go to high no no no they'll finish nine and seven okay and they'll squeak their way into the playoffs. Maybe wildcard sure they may be win the first game but then that's about as far as they go free my my i on his prediction. I think that's fair. I would look at this sort of as a year one almost for the browns now that they're bringing in odell and it just feels like i mean there's a lotta talent but it would definitely be an improvement. They'll definitely went a lot of games and it'll be a huge step up from when they're out before i would think so too. I think we can all agree on that. I i would think so too. I'm excited to watch brown this year. Which is something that i've never been able to say before literally in my entire life that's crazy mostly because lebron's veg that shit ownership as baker mayfield city now it is he owns that city man that he teen wolf to beer at a baseball game the weekend. I'll find learn what you meant when you when you talk about vamping camping that's it. Is that what that was wolfing or vamping all cats. Would you call it but yeah. That's what he did yeah he did. He really knocked it out. If you're new to our show the ross bohlin podcast almost every episode is broken down into segments which you can find below time cues in the description of the episode now. If we have a special guest or perhaps a special topic there could be exceptions exceptions to that rule but you'll figure it out and learn as you go. You don't have to have heard any of the preceding two hundred and eight episodes of the show in order to enjoy our v._p. Two oh nine but if you like it it obviously we ask that you go back and enjoy the two hundred nate backlogged episodes when you can soak him in enjoy when you've got the time. "The brunt of the blame when sports franchises go horribly awry but ownership. If you don't have have good ownership you have nothing when it comes to a sports franchise and look at it this way if your company has a c._e._o. Or an owner or founder whatever that makes is all the decisions right. One guy in that one guy is a mess. You companies fucked right if the head of the snake is sick. What's the rest. The body of the snake is fucked. If you don't have good ownership of your sports squad <hes> that's likely while your squad sucks if you have a great sports team. It's likely because you have good ownership. Even if you're owner is a moron many cases these billionaire sports franchise owners are or seem to be. They have the ability to make good hires. Didn't that makes them a good owner. I'm gonna give you some examples. Look at my birthplace my hometown houston texas for example. The astros are owned by jim crane and run by jeff who to two guys who've clearly what they're doing clearly wanna win who've gotten one world series ring together so far. They're chasing another this year. They're willing to take calculated risks. <hes> giving up future assets to bring in another stellar pitcher this past week that grungy to give it another shot to win again this year. The rockets now owned by tillman for tita eh run by darrow maury. They've been perennial playoff contenders. My entire life championship contenders the last couple of years. If golden state didn't exist. I'm almost positive they would have gotten one and then they went and got russell westbrook. They're putting themselves in a position to have a chance at another trophy this year maybe their first since the mid nineties and then you have the texans owned by son of former owner bob mcnair. You may remember bob for <hes> well. That's not even fair. I'm not going to say what you remember. Rebuff for. Bob did a lot of really good shit. Let me just say that. I think bob got a bad rap in the media but his son cao dude named cow who looks exactly zaki like what you think he would look like and has the mustache to go with it. He's the owner now and they don't have a g._m. By choice no g._m. G._m. and their best defensive player hasn't signed as a result jadeveon clowney floating in the wind and now they've cut their backup running back <hes> that's fine though right. You just need one more miller. He's not that old. It'll be fine in professional. Sports ownership matters to an enormous degree if your owners don't care about winning if they're just there for the money or the status of being like an n._f._l. Owner you are screwed as a sports fan. There's nothing thing you can do about it. Point is enjoy appreciate and praised praised like in a religious sense. That'd be strange. Don't build any false idols or anything weird like that. <hes> <hes> some people do please don't bill bob kraft statue in your front yard. Don't do that if you have a good owner though go spend that money on those tickets and support fort that team because you're lucky if you have to good teams in two good owners like the people of houston do at the moment for the love of god support them in shame came the bad shame. These old wealthy fucks who are ruining your sports teams for real. I'm i'm not joking. Shame these old wealthy men making horrible decisions on account of your sports franchise that you love and care for but also remember when your team sucks that's part of the fun of sports that makes me think about <hes>.

"Memes. Now i got four people employed on the drake millimeter team yeah for real. Have you listened that <hes> that compilation album by the way yeah have that was was asked a nice little surprise for me. I didn't know that was coming all those songs or at least most of them anyway have been obviously previously released like dreams money can buy the opener is like one of my all time favorite drake songs as a really good and it just never been put on an album and i guess he finally realized like armory was sitting at home counting downing stacks of money and he was like i need more of this arguably. This is some of his best work really put all put together. I mean once when you listen to it in this form cohesively yeah. It sounds really good. Isn't that a little surprising because they're all random tracks. Yeah it does feel like a pretty complete album. I liked listening to the whatever the what's the the name of thing <hes> the name of the album drop. Oh the was a care package. Yeah care package. I enjoyed care package as a whole oh more than his most recent album. It's also weird too because like you said these songs are all old so we heard the rely younger listening to it now. They kinda kind of take on a whole new meaning dude also with you especially because you're married now yeah and he talks a lot about marriage and relationships l. It's probably hard to relate to back then but now kinda hits different. You know begin stuff hitting differently like after it's been given time i watched no see or not country for old men. Excuse me also a great movie. <hes> i watch there will be blood over the weekend for probably like i don't know fifth time i've seen it but over the course of since its release i saw it in theaters when it came out at one point like a it tastes old company they took it was oil and gas company. They took us to go. See it in like a private theater at one point randomly like i've seen it at home a couple of times we own the blu blu ray the point is this i watched it and for the first time watching it a whole bunch of shit hit me differently like i kept finding myself brealey understanding the deeper meaning behind scenes and why <hes> the the main character does the things that he does why henry plain view does the things that he does yes and <hes> that was strange for me. It'd been awhile since i had one of those moments where i'm like. Damn i've progressed or age or experienced enough life or enough. Shit has happened to me. Between the last time i saw there will be blood. In this time i saw there will be blood that it took on a completely different meaning for me in almost every way play was crazy and that's how you know movies good by the way the if it continues to take on that's just that's what art is right. That's that's that's art. It's supposed to make you feel a certain thing or a certain way or learn something about yourself or other people every time you look at it or watch it or viewer enjoy it or whatever and there will be blood man and i know that movie gets made fun of a lot and it's funny. Actually when i saw it in theaters i remember leaving the theater and me and my buddy will win saw with like this is gonna sound like brag rags not well fuck that would like four's eight as there's something for sorority girls when we were data yeah when we were in college and for the record and none of us none neither of us had any <hes> luck in that in that regard there was no dating or anything that took place after the fat before girls hate them to go with you not pay them to go with his a._j. That's prostitition or escora tation. If that's a word but when we left the theater all four girls were like what was that actually ten minutes and they were like can we leave it was because it's a very weird artsy fucking. It's just it's a weird movie. These young very young be open minded going into yeah. No those movies where you just have the kind of clear clearer mind with no expectations..

"Hey i want to briefly continue our discussion about chance the rapper from the last episode only ooh. I don't know if we ever done like a carryover before was a couple of points that i wanted to make all right. We're one main point really yeah. I've been reading a lot of reviews and just what people are saying about the album okay and i'll just say at first i thought the whole running joke about chance loving his wife yeah the whole yeah love my why i thought that was funny at first but now looking looking back in hindsight is actually kind of starting to piss me off 'cause listen p people are really throwing shade at this album because a lot of the materials owes him talking about his wife and about his religion and his faith and just it's just a very happy album and i think kinda messed up that that's the reason why people people are so turned off by this. That's fair. That's almost like if you were to get on here on the podcast and the whole episode like we have a whole episode about you talking about your wife right and and people are just like that was the worst episode ever. You just talked about your wife and how happy you are the whole time we hear about but here's the thing with chance his he's. He's sort of <hes> outlook in energy. <hes> people get upset by that. They don't they don't but why why do people get mad at positively. Most close people are unhappy in angry i think and when they see somebody that isn't unhappy and angry and seemingly is a very are you able to express the joy they have in their life a relationship or religion or whatever it may be <hes> sometimes that can be annoying i as a as is a perennial hater. I've been a hater my whole life. I've been in active in minne- player haters balls. I get it i don't. I try not to do that anymore more obviously but i get it and it's honestly it's part of the reason that chance sometimes cannot hit for me it because like he doesn't. I don't know man. There's he's like you made the comparison to old chance right. We discussed his old albums and how it was more about like yeah. It isn't evolution of a person just going through life really absolutely and i think that's the unfair part as a but be real most of those people it's like how many of those people making fun of chance and bussing out the memes teams in doing that. I love my wife thing. How many of them you think jam the album energised trying to have like it's part of the fun of chance the rapper at this point i mean i guess you can look at it from a from a p._r. Standpoint like great promotion and marketing for him share because once you get once you get turned into a mean then like it's all it's all uphill from mandrake makes his own memes..

"We talked a lot of talk a lot about the golden age of pirates. But at what point did pirates, get to be come cold pirates, and like, how did that name come up like what does it mean? What's come from? So I know I think the word pirates it comes from an ancient Greek word that, but I don't remember the exact definition, but it has to do. Yeah. Live so many. But it has to be pirate comes from a Greek word has Latin roots as well. And I it generally means, like plunderer something similar to that. So that was kinda us throughout history to describe people on the sea that were generally causing lots of problems. Basically a word that meant really troublesome problem people. Christner. So I was doing make him question. This exactly like me. He'll be asking a question. Okay. Ask her what the name of. What was the name of Madame? Chiang. No, I was just really, really shocked that the whole treasure idea was made up was there. Absolutely. No buried treasure. Like the curse of oak island and all that stuff was there just because they never found it yet. Got some info there was something, there's always been lots of rumors, including with oak island, and then also parts of the Caribbean. And the Americas, there's always been lots of rumors because when captain Kidd was arrested he alluded to like a big cache of gold that he'd hidden somewhere. But this and somehow this news got out to the newspapers, but it was never proven to be true. And the reality is pirates weren't after things like gold. They were after things like silk medicine sugar spices. Because it's really desirable. Like only the wealthiest could really have it wasn't. It wasn't a. It wasn't a swill that gold was back, then there is that goal. Get out of here, sill that blouse, Maine. They're basically after anything that they could sell for profit. And the thing is the big things of gold and jewels. They're heavy, it would actually way down a ship. So they wanted these items and back then actually found this out like I think about a week before had to submit my dissertation. So I was glad I found this out the word treasure was used to describe valuable goods, excuse me, just valuable goods. So that's where we get the idea from we're, we're than did. They keep all their their shit. They would keep it on the ships, and then they would sell it. Okay. That's leading me. Potty time on the. We don't have any type of Dory, did they over the site of the throat over the throw it hand, and they do it over, and you said they weren't flamboyant throwing piles of I was. Backcomb splat. They can very much guys coming next month. Dr Becker, taivon Novak ROY Scoville link. And curb thank you and goodnight.

"Look? After right down bid. I have to remind myself, I'm the one reading it doesn't say that the NFL who they talking to me. Okay. Did they look so professor? For the for the most part pirates. Looked like any other sailor. Really? I know. Sorry. So that's why they said. Gotcha. Up there. You know, done some. We looked normal rains. You've heard about. Up there. There's a skull that could be. You'll be it'd be don't do ways human being with those skin on his face. Roger, we did that very jolly was sad Rogers, Iraq. That's what we called him. So, yeah, the clothing was. So sorry. Our little recess. Foolery here. What if you're the professor oversaw your thesis, just appeared right now? It was like you're not a doctor anymore. Whatever this is we're taking it back. Honestly. I think you'd be really into this. Yeah, Dr Drayton if you're out there listening. Your. The of Iran. Amazing. Even more up in the audience. I'm here. So who, who looked where do we get this notion of the three corner hat and the and the ipads? Oh. Actually speaking of ipads, a member of already told me that the reason they had ipads was not because they had lost is because they wanted to keep one eye. In the dark so that they could go under they could go down into the bowel of the ship or whatever, or whatever it's called say, you're describing this horribly. Okay. That I heard the extent a why don't you try Laurie? Well, we should the guy he was ROY. Okay. If you know the truth, they used to wear patches not because they had lost is right? Because sometimes when they had go down into the ship, they wanted to just like flip that up me like, oh, my doesn't have to adjust because I had it in the dark the whole time, true or false. That was better. I will admit that I tried to race along. Threat. Explain if my own head, he. I'd love to hear you do. I was the guy crowd. You'd be the best one tonight Jacqueline field. One. Well. Would you be really disappointed if I said, that's more of a theory than fact. Urinating. Wasted our time. So people don't know, people have people don't really know all I the vision, we have of the peg legs, and the eyepatches come from the fact that, yes. It was a very risky job just to be a sailor in general. So losing limbs was a reality. But the image we have comes from Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. And he got those images from when he went to the states and visited a lot of civil civil war veterans who are often missing one of their eyes or an arm, or a leg. And so he's that is inspiration. That's pretty cool that he was able to go see the carnage of the bloodiest door in American history. I've got a wonderful little lily putting fantasy. Right. So you're saying Treasure Island is in many ways, the bible of pirates in the sense that may be it's real. And maybe it's all made up. Finding characteristic of the bible. Treasure. Treasure Island is the book where yeah, we get most of our visual ideas of what pirates aren't Balenciaga. We generally believe that as history in this author dude was just like I'm gonna fuck fuck here. Here's the thing lived his whole life, thinking that surreal, here's his numerous parties. You know that. That he saw on Mythbusters, not Robert never mind. He didn't. In seventeen twenty four there was a book published called a general history of the pirates, which is huge volume about, like, now, it's like nine hundred pages of pirate biographies that possibly the writer Daniel Defoe had put together interviewing people, and this is considered to be mostly factual you can still buy it in a bookstore. It's never gone out of print. It was a huge success. And Robert Louis Stevenson did a lot of his research from that book pulled the juicy facts from their exactly, exactly. And then he relished. Book in seventeen twenty four one. I'm fascinated at your ability to remember all of these things in various Pacific details. And I mean that in general, I can't do that. But seventeen. Seventeen seventeen twenty four someone already like man I'm going to document these pirates either. Like people got. No. What didn't you? Golden acing didn't you say nine hundred pages didn't you say the golden age was seventeen hundred seventeen twenty five thousand this person was writing these biographies during the actual big hot era of the pirate. Close. How did they find these people? How Willem Dafoe great-great-grandfather find these people. So he's the only person to laugh at that. Can make one doctor. So they will get the information from a few ways some would be literal interviews, a lot of pirates were imprisoned, he could go, he interviews, some imprison, but most of the information came from the trials were published literature about day or so after they would happen for Begum and people read them everywhere, and they were reprinted and resold, constantly newspaper reports were sold about them and the spiritual. Advisers of those who are condemned to die would also publish their own observations and accounts. And so taking all this information and plus embellishing for the sake of entertainment. This is how a lot of the pirate biographies came about the then became fame, is that how we know who Blackbeard is because of those biographies, mostly those biographies, and then yeah, I would say, definitely the biographies because in the advertisements for the book from the seventeen hundreds, they would often highlight Blackbeard the pirate and also and Bonnie and Mary read their Baggies in there as well. For the women and then black beard was famous because the way he looked has long black hair and his black beard. This went against the social construction of the time, where if you wanted to be seen a civilized you were clean shaven with short hair and Blackbeard went against that he would he would even go as far as putting lit candles in his beard to make himself look like he'd literally just come out of hell and. Backtrack over here. Most of the kind of more colorful versions of the way, the pirates look complete bullshit Blackbeard was on fire. He was the dread pirate Roberts, literally do you wanna know when black, but you maybe know this when Blackbeard and Rackham separated, black bears, aided, you got to come in here and he put the candles ending does this coming and Raga was like, dude? What are you doing? He was like, that's it. That's it. You can't just say, yes, I have fire in my face buried treasure. Real. No buried treasure. Whereas there is no. No buried treasure. Unfortunately, also a myth way it goes. Roar, the whole deal except for more naturally, buried treasure. Right. Like sunken ship. We'd I mean I hadn't thought of it that way. Sure that, you know what the whole ideal there was a wreck there. Sinking that, that would be known people would find that in fact, there was a Spanish ship that a pirate ship that had crash, and then it's goods actually washed up on the shores of. I don't remember the exact. Sorry what was what was it actually like on the boat? What was the what was the how did they function if they weren't like military hierarchy what was were? They partying all the deadly. Drinking allow where they partying or the fucking on the ship Jesus. Right. Kind of all the above. So, yeah. Mother fucker. Jesus christ. Kind of like the Jesus Christ high-seas in that they were fucking constantly drinking. Right. They, they had to kinda run. They had to run the ship, so you have to make sure everything spunk. Shinning keeping it clean making sure the food stores were okay, making sure that everything was in good repair. But because they weren't an actual military ship, they had more downtime than other ships. So pirate ships are also known to have musicians and they would have games. They play music and yeah, they drank a lot of alcohol because water would go bad, after a while in wooden barrels, so they would drink rum, or they would put rum into the water. So it was drinkable room because rum was distilled from sugar, which was the big product coming out of the Caribbean at the time because of the slave trade and news. Say it's obvious you fool. It again. What about them? Well, you told me that there was a story of a famous ship of wine that was pirated. Yeah. So in forget, exactly what year. But in the seventeen hundreds, I know can only member so much that there was a ship that professor for shut the fuck up. You can only remember so much. The whole early anymore. Time fucker said Moore loan. I also didn't work. So there were some newspaper reports from New England that said that they had caught a ship of pirates and these pirates had washed up on shore. And they were all unconscious. So what happened is that a group of pirates had robbed a French ship, that was carrying bottles of Madeira wine and Madeira wine was like the wine everyone was after at that time. So the pirates according to. That work, this crowd hates Moore lows. Yeah. Marleau. Yeah. Yeah. Madeira was the one that they all wanted. And so they captured the wine, and then according to the reports the pirates all drank the wine, they drink so much of it, that they all passed out completely drunk, the ship washed up onto rocky shore and they all woke up to find themselves being arrested because people literally been walking down the beach fishermen and found him. To the hangover. What, what, what was the pirates code was that a real thing? Do people really live by a code pirate Ned low? He did write a set of codes, and they were published in newspapers and the code was a list of ten ten rules, essentially, and they were things like men won't drink themselves into oblivion. All such a low bar. Al- nobody have an alcoholic seizure. Number one, we were here to Ray. If you're gonna cut someone's head off do it swiftly do it. And so. So things like how to equally distribute goods based on who captured it, and also how people will get repaid, if they got injuries because people did get hazard pay essentially, so is, how that would be distributed, and also just kind of general rules. I think on the said we won't work on the Sabbath, which is interesting because pirate religions. We're looking for a bargain. The code is like, really. I thought the code is way like fuck with you on and get fucked up every day. Instead, you're like, okay if I got the gold, and I decide Tam gets. We turn left at the Bahamas and we all go to church. Yeah. They were a lot more. The pirates code is a bit more tame than we might think about race racism, racial makeup of the of the boat. Is it is it all whites on one ship, and other, what was the deal is better? Be good. No. Unfortunately, all have a different definition. It also motions already said and we're some boats other. Oh my God. I didn't mean that only meant that white is the default. You go was a white boat, and then other was like. I only mean filling out SAT taking, they were they Asian Pacific islanders know what I'm saying is a very racist time in history. But these are also people that are living off the grid of the social mores of the time. And I wondered that they buck social conventions about race. Yeah. Definitely. And this is.

"Were. Condescending. You already have doctorate. Legitimate question. Oh, she just saw you a weaker vessel could board and plunder. Yeah. If you or kids, I guess. What she said to me. I think you're onto a screenplay here. Super rich guy. Tired of being rich? Pirate. Is this your oppression of help pirates really talked back then it was the rich guy being like I'm gonna get my own boat like you have seven good? Get one of them ready. We're pirates now. But most pirates if they weren't already a successful sailors kinda came from more humble beginnings, but there was a pirate who is known for being really wealthy and his name was Jack Rackham who was also Jackson's a rapper. A really good detective Graca or a really good pool player. He says, at the end of every gay rack up. That's not a good as last name. They just call them was Jack his full name, or perhaps was it Jacqueline? I didn't wanna have to say. No love. Yeah. So wait, Jack Rackham. How are you going to be a rich guy named Jack rachot? Some people have. What, what was his thing he came? He started rich and then just started robbing other. People say, Jack Rackham. He was actually born in the Caribbean. Sun deck Rackham from the Caribbean. He's the guy that had been the. Zacher beckham. Kim. How could you not do that if you're in the Caribbean? Jack up. Old school, so they didn't have automated. Gunfire jack. During the town. Here is really good at the full leaf or. Don't go away shoot again. What I like is at the end of every rift. She then goes no what happened was. You would have made great pirates. Jechorek started rich. So, yeah, he was he was. I'm so sorry went to graduate school. Got a doctor your deuce to this. But I'm glad you're here. Yeah. He was the son of wealthy wealthy planters landowners. And he got married, and he has about four kids and then suddenly, no one knows why he decided, I don't wanna do this. I'm going to become. I know why he had those kids, he was like fuck this. To be a pirate. He basically literal pretty much like he literally had enough and decided, I'm pirate he goes to NASA, which are now on in the Bahamas, and he met up with the pirate Blackbeard, who. Yeah, he was real and sailed with him. And Jack was a really terrible pirate. And he ended up scream was this not been me terrible pirate. But in the mazing fall. Dear kid's father here on the boat with. Swear to God real name. Dear brian. And Tommy rack. Rickie rackham. Iraqi rack. That's the song recommend Coon Beatles. Fuck you crowd. No. You're right crowd. That was a bad one. I made it. I made it. Okay. So he was he was a shitty pirate. Yeah. He wasn't very good. He didn't have sailing experience. He got he, he was a battle got really injured. And this is one eighteen up with Blackbeard him was like you can take my ship, and you can captain it, but I still need to work with you, but he ended up being still such a bad pirate that Blackbeard sort of kicked them out, and says, no, you can't sail with us. And then he began to sail someone else named Charles vane, who's sailing with two female pirates, and Bonnie and Mary read, but then they all got captured he was hanged and the pirate think record. Recco, he dead? Yeah. Rectum. Rock Rackham Graca. It up hill. More work. I didn't Iraq Jacqueline questions. First couple of question the rapid fire did they hang them on the boat? No, they would've they hanged him on the land. Yes. So this is done in. In Kingston, Jamaica or that actually Port Royal Jamaica. And that's where they were all hanged was or hung, and they were hanging in Vienne sorry. Yeah, I get those two confused. They were hung in on land in the Caribbean. Death in Jamaica and also London other parts north. What about the name, the two women, and I've always wondered, you know, because when I started dig into these feelings of trying to identify. Like lead imaginative rich imagine of life. I'm like, do I have to sort of get into my what is the pirate wench great question where the women that you're describing who you said pirates, like was an is a pirate wench to real term, and were they just so many questions? Finish. Okay, go ahead. Pirate wench real. And then and then after you answer them. Hold on quick one. That's what I did. So in short words, yes, the were wenches a real word, and it wasn't even derogatory. It was a woman who usually worked in like a pub or a tab. Every weekend, I'm defending myself. Right. No, it's not where you like hang out outside of bar so that you can go look at this win win. It'd be. That's an appropriate. Shuli wenches inappropriate term feminism back about fifty years who were pirates. What was the deal with pirates and women were, they were they horrible to women were, they, they obviously weren't feminist. But we're what was there? It was slightly more egalitarian than the rest of society. We'll how did they interact with women? So it's, it's hard to say because we don't have too much documentation about it. But I know that and Bonny Mary read they were really successful as pirates. They were they basically ran the ships that they were on, and that was a really unusual case because their names were so not pirated. I'm bonnie. Read and Bobby sounds very pirates. I don't they it just sounds like my body lies over the ocean. Do you do these people? Most of them have nome-de-guerre these real names was Blackbeard, the guy's real name kick. But, like most of these people feel very pirate issue is that just because I've heard of them probably because. Yeah. Probably because you've heard of them, and these are the names that have been documented. So it's possible that they went by other names. But what was written down in the court records would have been and Bonnie and Mary read, and they did they take lovers. They did so on. On and Bonny Mary read you really want. In the. They hung in the vote. Did they talk in the boat? In the boat where they where they hanged in the boat. And I mean different things hang. You better believe Mary, read fucked. She. Mermaid and Bonnie is down below fucking again. Finally is that they were both on the ship. And Bonnie, it actually married Jack Rackham. And then when when they were. What with Jack Rackham? The bad sailor, even though about sailor. Right. So Anthony Reid kind of ran the show and they sailed with someone else named Charles vane, who was he was not a good guy really violent pirate. But when they were all arrested and put in jail, both end Bonny Mary read were pregnant, and so for this reason this Jimmy. What they weren't hanged for this reason. The Mary Reid died in prison. She died in childbirth and Bonnie survived. We don't know what happened to her, but they both said when Jack Rackham was hanged if he had lived as a man he'd need to have hanged like a dog. So they were pretty witty.

When he was growing up in the city, the jeweler on main street never wanted to become a jeweler, his father had been jeweler. His grandfather had been a jeweler and his great grandfather had been a jeweler to all in the shop on main street. The jeweler always thought he'd break away from the family business and do something different with his life yet here he wants a grown man running the same shop his great grandfather has stabbed all those years ago. The truth is though jeweler enjoyed it and his customers enjoyed him. They called him the most skilled and honest jeweler in the city praise which made the humble jeweler blush redder that are ruby one day. The jeweler was standing behind the counter polishing some silver. When in came the Taylor from down the street. Hello, my friend. I haven't seen you in awhile. How are things the Taylor. Frowned and shook his head. I've seen better days. Man. Business has been so slow lately. That's why I'm wondering if you can help me sell. He reached into his apron pocket, this dangling from the Taylor's fingers wise, a necklace, the pendant was clear like a diamond as it caught. The sun's light through the window rain, those specs stems to cross walls. This necklace has been treasured by my family for generations. Migrate grandmother used to say, it was the most priceless thing in her house more valuable than her crystal her, China, even her silver. A few years back. My mother gave his precious heirloom to me. It pains me to have to sell it. But hey, a man's. Gotta eat the jeweler took the necklace and gave it a closer. Look, the pendant was well cut, and it certainly sparkled like a precious gem. But his expert I knew it wasn't a precious gem at all it was plain old glass. So what do you say? Will you help me sell it? The Taylor seemed awfully desperate. The jeweler didn't have the heart to tell him the truth. You know, you've been such a good friend to me and the shop all these years recommending us to your customers. Giving scraps of fabric for polishing our gills. I'll see what I can do for you Taylor. Ran behind the counter and gave the jeweler a hug. Oh, thank thank you. Thank you. Everyone says you're the most skilled in honest jeweler in the city, but you're also the most generous friend in the world. And he went skipping out of the shop jeweler slung the necklace over a hook on the wall right next to his coat, then he slumped down on the counter his head in his hands. Oh, no. What am I gonna do this necklace is nothing more than cheap glass? Twig toll the tailor. His so-called treasure is anything, but priceless that night the jeweler spent hours tossing and turning in bed at one point. He glanced at the clock on his night table. Three. I haven't gotten a wink of sleep frustrated. He threw off his covers and began pacing the room. I don't know. Maybe I should just try and sell the necklace for the Taylor after all to the untrained eye. It looks like a diamond my friend would make a nice profit and put food on his table. What am I talking about my customers praise me as the most skilled in honest jeweler in the city, if I pass off this worthless piece of blast as a diamond, I'm not being honest at all the jeweler stopped his pacing and gazed out the window. The full moon was shimmering like a big round gem in the sky got settles it first thing in the morning. I'm going to get the necklace from the shop than March right over to the Taylor and tell him I can't help him out. Now, maybe I can try and get a least a little bit of rest and having made up his mind. He drifted off to sleep. A few hours later
