"Why these x.'s. Who a lot of times are stronger or you know. Have a whole like super powered team with them or have magical or update. Yes abilities and all this stuff. Why is scott pilgrim. Able to defeat them all unless unless he's just really good video games it's hard to. You're you're just a little bass player. What is happening. Well you know one thing that a lot of times. When movies are based off of complex. I find myself sort of disappointed in the translation because like comic books are an art form in and of themselves like that can be the final way work is done and movies always viewed as like better than a comic book And i don't really i unless you do something different. I don't always feel that they're necessary. And i think that. In the case of scott pilgrim the they do something different. And that's the the focus they put on the music in the movie ngs obviously comic books. Cat have that element And the music is so good like that. They've got different bands to basically be like the shadow band behind each of the acts. Like back of the music. For scott pilgrim span. For the sex bombs like metric was envy's band glass demon head and that element is lacking in the comics. Which i think is really cool. Yeah that is true. I think the music's really good and it's fun and it is neat. That like i feel like scott. Pilgrim's band is actually good like that's a that you know it's it's not just all a bunch of i don't know if that's different from my experience. Yeah but I think the only thing that i have trouble with in the movie version is at the end. We have this decision point between like. I don't think it's clear who scott. Pilgrim's gonna end up with because he is just fought this battle for ramona. But he did like the final the final boss basically he fought alongside knives. And there's that comment from ramona that they make a great team and i think there's this moment at the end of the movie where you don't know who's going to end up with and i feel like you should. You should really know. You know what i mean like. There should be a really obvious. This is where the love is kind of. And i don't know that i can tell like at the end of the movie..

Yeah yeah And i read all of them and now at some point in in my recent history i purchased my own balk set of all of them. Now i own all of the graphic novels again so the movie in the graphic novel follow roughly the same story line. There's a lot more stuff background to characters and stuff you get the graphic novel obviously longer form but sure you know just sort of follows kind of you know how musician twenty two year old. Scott pilgrim he's not doing much with his life He's dating a seventeen year old girl when we first meet him and then he falls for this cool. Just dater Yeah and has a lot of like a video game imagery. it's very like the movie is very comic book very video game very pop culture. It's very much a product for for a nerd audience a lot of easter eggs. Yeah i saw that. It got a lot of I guess like good attention and good press for all the video game affects. It used stuff for lowering the different kinds of media like In the in the battles between scott and some of the exes or just like when he's peeing and he has the little bar at the top the mp's as he's peeing All those different kinds of layering of of mediums I saw a lot of people that was new and cool..
CDC Says New Science Caused Change in Mask Guidance
"Their mask guidance as we hear from a B C's Eva Pilgrim, the CDC advising the fully vaccinated people return to wearing masks indoors in areas of high transmission as cases climb around the country. This was not something that we took lightly, and something that I know weighs heavily with me and with all of America director Molinski, citing New science that shows even some vaccinated people can transmit the delta vary it the data showing, though, that the vaccine reduces the risk of getting the virus, seven fold and the risk of being hospitalized. 20 fold. The CDC also recommending kids and teachers returned to school in the fall with everyone masked even if they're vaccinated, a reverse from guidance given just two weeks ago. The new guidance coming his parents across the country protest mask mandates in schools, but the head of one the largest teachers unions in the country standing by the new guidance. Obviously we're going to embrace the science, but you know it's it's with great reluctance that we have to put our mass back on the variant now responsible for an estimated eight in 10 cases as we learn who is in those hard hit hospitals. ABC calling 50 hospitals in 17 states of the 271 Covid patients in the ICU 255 were not vaccinated. I see you doctors telling ABC News the vast majority of vaccinated patients in their ICUs had underlying conditions or weakened immune systems with more than 156 million Americans fully vaccinated nationwide. Approximately 153,000 symptomatic breakthrough cases have occurred representing less than 1% of those fully vaccinated, according to an unpublished internal CDC document obtained by ABC News overnight. America Has a Drinking Problem

The mayflower landed at plymouth. Rock is because the ship was running low on beer people back then drink beer instead of water or they preferred it to water. Same and the sailors freaked out. And they thought that at the rate that they and pilgrims. We're drinking the beer. They won't have enough beer to get them back to england's so rather than sail on to the mouth of the hudson which had been the plan they pull the shore and kick the pilgrims off and that is why the pilgrims landed at plymouth rock. Of course the truth may have been a little more complicated than what was indicated in their diaries as they complained bitterly that winter about the beer and having been kicked off there were other things going on it was december. The weather was bad. The food was running low but the beer was a big part of the picture. People are dying in there. Like where's the booze yeah right. So william bradford who would go on to be the governor of the plymouth colony for thirty years that winter in his diary couldn't stop talking about the beer dearest diary. It has been another long and thirsty. Day here at the plymouth colony. How i long for the cool sweet feeling of a droplet of beer rolling down my throat part. That's not real. Almost half of the pilgrims were going to die that winter and the is what he was worried about now to be fair people back then. Were very leery of water. There had been problems with water. Purity in england and they thought that beer was safer nonetheless. They really enjoyed their liquor

Virgil and the Funeral for a Bug
"Was a poet who lived in the first century. Bc e during the the augusta periods of early imperial room and You might know him best from his most famous work the epic poem the aeneid which is about sort of the founding lineage of rome and the adventures of the trojan hero aeneas who after the trojan war travels from troy and eventually becomes the ancestor of the roman people Virgil is often considered one of the greatest latin poets and he was wildly popular during his own lifetime You know he. He received commendations from from kings and the wealthy. And and you know everybody thought like this. This guy is just got the juice. And i had virgil on my mind A lot last year. Because rachel and i were re-reading dante's divine comedy. And if you'll recall of course virgil is the pilgrims guide through hell and purgatory and the divine comedy so the spirit of virgil. He's been living out the centuries in limbo because Though he was a very virtuous man he's one of the virtuous pagans. He was never baptized as a christian. So he can't go to heaven he's got a hang out in this sort of antechamber of hell where everybody sits around sighing. Because interesting has ever happening to them. I have to admit that. I tend to when anybody mentions virgil. That's the first place. My mind goes is dante's inferno which is probably not fair. It's like if you were to mention the name of socrates and there was someone were to go. Yeah yeah he's in bill and ted's excellent adventure that's exactly eighty nine. That's exactly where i knew you were going with the villain ted. Yeah yeah the that is pretty good because though it slightly different because it's not a it's not at all parodied in the divine comedy. In fact i would say it's exactly the opposite in the divine comedy. He is he is revered. Yeah yes he. He's reimagined as this like superhuman wizard. For for dante he Virgil is the embodiment of wisdom and reason so for the intended readers of the divine comedy. We're supposed to understand that. Virgil is like a ten out of ten platinum level. Cool be st is just like this ultimate wizard of knowledge and about half of the state you remember. How like basically every other time. Dante talks in the first two books of the divine comedy. It's just to say like virgil you are so right. I would never doubt your wisdom. Tell me more you know and it kind of stinks then. Because i remember when we got to the end of the purgatory and virgil does not get to move on to heaven with dante. He has to stay behind and be beatrice takes him on from there. We're really mad. That virgil didn't get to go to heaven. Yeah yeah no. I mean so much so much time is devoted to him. It also much stripped away at that point. You know. it's like if it's hard to follow dante in into paradise just because you know that there aren't going to be any demons playing trumpets with their bombs or anything there's gonna be Monsters so much and virgils not gonna be there. So it's it's part. Three in a series is always tough. Yeah i agree. Yeah the the trilogy is a hard sell to to complete with dignity. And but i think for modern readers that sense of injustice about virgil that is interpreted by the characters in the inferno as you know perfect divine justice. It's the one person version of the dynamic that plays out throughout the whole thing whereas they're going through hell it just seems like wow. This is really unfair. Yeah but anyway long. Before virgil was guiding dante up the mountain of purgatory in his post mortem shade form people were telling lots of legends about his life and one of those legends. Is that once at his home. In rome virgil built a tomb and held an extravagant funeral for a dead fly. Like a fly as in the insect with six legs and wings This story is very probably untrue. And we'll get to why. That is in a bit. But i i wanted to explore some of the details and for this. I was reading an article by george pendle in cabinet magazine. In two thousand seven called virgils fly and he describes the legend in the following way quote held in the grounds of virgils home on rome's esquel line hill. The funeral attracted the great and good of the city. Dirges were sung and tributes read virgils. Patron my sinus delivered. A lengthy and moving eulogy to the departed insect and virgil was himself said to have uttered a few of his exquisite versus over the tiny carcass tomb had been erected and the lifeless body of the fly was placed within it to the whales and moen's of the professional mourners so lavish where the commemorations that the cost was estimated at over eight. Hundred thousand sister. She's so that's the gist. According to the story virgil and his close friends spend huge amounts of money and effort to celebrate the life in memory of an insect concluding with the insects burial in a marble tomb. Why on earth would this be. Well the legend itself also contains an answer to this so to read from pendle again quote but the reason for the funeral was not due to extravagance interest or even emotion. Having defeated julius. Caesar's assassins at the battle of philip pie. The second triumvirate was at that very moment. Engaged in confiscating the states of the rich and dividing them among the war veterans returning from the battlefield only one exception was given if the estate held a burial plot. It was not to be touched by burying his housefly. Virgil saved his house.

Which teach the founding and Dr Larry on President. Hillsdale College is joined by Dr Kenneth Calvert. Dr Katz When we went to break we're about to talk about the founding up North Way discussed the laws of Virginia three weeks ago. People who go and listen to that. That's England transplanted. What is it that the pilgrims had in mind? And when did the Pilgrim's become the Puritans? And how did they diverge? And when does the Salem compact come into this conversation? Well, I think it's important to understand that James, the first of England was really attempting to create a culture built around the Church of England. Andre English, Christianity on and then what happened in the midst of that was that you have two ends of a spectrum kind of cut off from from inclusion in that one are the Puritans on one side, the other are those who choose to hang on to their Catholicism's And on the product inside the Puritans and the pilgrims were ones who really struggled with this idea of being you know, essentially forced into into the Church of England. The Pilgrim's being separatist left first went to the Netherlands and, um, realize that their Children were becoming Dutch more than they leaving behind English tradition. So what's very interesting about the pilgrims? And then the Puritans that followed them is that they were very much you know, Uh, Honoring the King and stand and Parliament of England. But they did struggle with the religious, um, on church structure that had been established. And so the pilgrims ended up coming to the northern colonies and the pilgrims being much more separatist, much more distinct in their attempt. T O be separate from the Church of England, the Puritans who came after them and again. There's a lot of discussion is how one really makes a distinguished distinguishes between these two groups. The Puritans. Many of them were from London. Many of them were involved in commerce and business. Many of them had been trained at Cambridge University, Cambridge University in that at that time, tend to be the kind of intellectual center Puritanism. And what they wanted to do in this new colony or new colonies in the north was to really establish Christian Republic, Um, still under, um You know the King and Parliament of England but to establish a kind of government again, As I said earlier, that might Be a a model for how Christians would live with and among one another, they established the first university in the colonies, Harvard University. Established. You know, in the name of John Harvard, who was a Puritan from Stratford upon Avon and in 16 36. This this college became a university was established. "The thing that felt important to me to understand about that moment over time is that like yes. That doesn't make you good on your own. You can still be pretty selfish and thoughtless. Even if you're not a super villain right. Glenn i have a question for you which is as our foremost chronicler of nerd culture as somebody who has watched the sort of steady progression of how things like comic and video games. And you know. Fantasy and sci fi stories have sort of moved in and out of the center of culture. Did you have a reaction at the time to where this fit on that time line. Because we're not quite at the moment yet where it's just be central tentpole of everything where there is like an empire of like superhero content that just popping propping up half of hollywood at this point did it feel ahead of its time. Did it feel stuck out of time. What how did it strike you. It felt at the time like the best comic book movie i had seen. The pickings were pretty slim back then. Still but i mean you know the thing about nerd. Culture is that it represents when the things it loves get popular but it also for it to happen. That's all they want to happen is for the thing. They love to become like football but when it does they react and so. That's why the fact that a lot of these references in this book in this movie are so niche and so specific to manga martial arts films especially video games that was a selling point to the geeks and may be one of the things that made it harder. Sell in the movie to the mainstream america at the time. I think this movie comes out. Now you change some stuff about some of the characterizations. But i think a more people would get it now. It's true it's very canadian into stardom in presence. Nothing to too big yup but at the same time. It's not afraid to be big and over the top. I mean my issues with like the dragon. Sonic waves aside. That scene is just so fun to watch. This movie is just so fun to watch like as much as i was. You know kind of grumbling about scott being the worst the whole time when those jokes land they land so well and it still makes me feel that kind of excitement about the manga and video games. That i grew up loving. And it's still fun to see. Like oh i get that reference re watching. This movie made me think a lot. About how i feel. Like ensemble films aren't as good anymore. Like in the sense that everyone is doing what they need to do. Like what cure in kokin. Especially as wallace. Which i mean. I've always loved him. he's great. I watch comedies now. Kind of just been doing research on like how comedies have changed in the last ten years and i noticed that like more often. Now it's like a bunch of famous people and the hope that they will have chemistry whereas like scott pilgrim into a bunch of people who weren't really famous and they just trusted the they were going to have chemistry and work together and they really like for. The most part really embody their characters in a way that. I don't feel like we see that much anymore. It's true all right. We want to know what.

"Because she's a high schooler sarah's vibe at this point around the end of the two thousand kind of sheepish self conscious soft boy. Who's also like totally def- nick is already arguably starting to sour at this point and it's why a few years later when he plays himself in this is the end. The joke is like what if he was just fully unapologetically insufferable. What if there was no smokescreen about it. He was just actually the worst. It's one of the things that makes him good for this role and take that but drop it into a story where he's at the very least not completely surrounded by enablers like the thing that happens in so many like romantic comedy type stories. Is that the version of friendship that we see represented with people who are just making bad decision after bad decision is like we got you like we're here for you through thick and thin rather than confronting people and telling them like no your exhausting. You make life difficult for people around you like. That's a really important part of friendship too. Is this jumping off of that. I love anna. Kendrick's character plays scott's sister. I was saying she was like my voice in this movie. Everything she said about scott. What's exactly what. I wanted to say at that moment so it was really fun to kind of hear her. Come in and go like oh. You're just the worst. Why so. I do appreciate that you know scott is constantly being told. You're bad. why are you doing this. What are you doing. But at the end of the movie the lesson that he learns a self worth. And i'm i understand what that's supposed to signify in his kind of character arc but i don't know if self worth the lack of self worth is scott. Pilgrim's real problem. I personally think that his real problem is just his lack of considering other people's work so it's hard to kind of see that his big lesson is self worth and that's what allows him to defeat his big villains. That's why. I think it's important that the character ramona is yes. She's a dream girl but she's by no means a manic pixie dream girl not pixie but a clinically depressed joy division dream girl who needs to dump scott get a therapist and find a.

"Pilgrim vs the world's dr michael sarah as directionless kind of selfish not terribly bright twenty two year old living in toronto it was directed and co written by edgar right and despite its amazing cast in its kinetic and frenetic visual style which are from video games manga and martial arts movies. The film underperformed at the box office in the ten years. Since however it's attained cult status. It was one of the first films we talked about on. Pch back in the day and we loved it then but does it. Hold up on when weldon. Today we're looking back. At scott pilgrim vs the world. Elizabeth winstead and eventually dumps knives but then he learns that in order to date ramona. He must i feed her seven evil. Ex's in what turns out to be heavily stylized combat. The film was based on a series of graphic novels by bryan lee. O'malley and where's that comic book. Providence on its sleeve by doing things like depicting sound effects and speed lines visually on screen. Not only is it stylish as hell but when you watch it with twenty twenty is and the opening credits roll you. Sit there going. Oh oh kieran. Culkin anna kendrick. Aubrey plaza brandon routh mae. Whitman brie larson jason schwartzman and with eyebrows. More on point literally. Chris evans dodi. What's your general impression of the film today and has it changed at all over the last ten years. I really liked this movie. I think if anything's changed in the past ten years there are moments that i have to kinda watch through my fingers. Now i saw in twenty ten off. Fresh break-up which i think is the way to see it. And i walked out and i was kind of like i think i like that and over time i of found that i couldn't quit it that i went back and rewatch scenes from it over and over again. It became sort of like a late night. Comfort watch and i think the thing that sticks with me about it. Is that in many ways. It is a romantic comedy with all of the trouble. That that brings. But you're aware from the very start that the hero socks that he's the worst. i also recognize. That may be one reason why able to enjoy it so much that i'm not in this movie. It has no black characters if knives chow was and there were lots of jokes about that. I'm sure that at the time. It would have made me issue a lot more. But the thing that i thought about rewatching it last night getting ready to talk to you. All is that in a way. I am in this movie because i've been a twenty two year old six gender straight dude and the thing that i recognize in even this is the aspect where to me. It's less just about like loving it and more about like kind of finding it useful because it can be gutting to see some of your worst moments reflected back at you. Obviously in an extreme way. But i think if you're a young horny dude who still has a lot of growing to. Do you want excuses for your romantic life to feel epoch and like a conquest and you don't want your partner you wanna win them..

You can also do tag team moves like a super special attack. Scott can let call knives in with a barrage knives on the ground and you know Scott can call in Ramona flowers and she kisses him doesn't kind of. is really fun. It's it's it's a great it's a it's a solid video game and it's a damn shame. This movie didn't make more money because I think if it did if it made its money back probably reported it to the playstation for. The bone, and I would be. This, Week Converted to pee so that I could play on in any era because like, yeah. Stuck on little console really sucks especially I think the playstation three is also kind of infamously hard to emulate right like. Crazy parallel risks. that. Yeah. That like you know even though we have way more powerful machines, it's just very hard to emulate that. So I've never I mean maybe it's possible today but I've not able to I've never been able to get a good playstation emulator. My only complaint about that check that out is it a kicked? My Ass. Again is hard. Is Very hard. Yeah. That's part of the like you. I think you all sorts of other things like you had to beat it in one go you could use. hyperspace tunnels to bypass things like Mario. But you had the like if you got to the final stage, you had to get there at once ran out lives you had to start all you could save but like once he ran a lives that was it. So it's kind of I think designed to kick your ass and you have to level up and if you're if you're struggling go through some of the areas multiple times but. The variety of enemies like when you're fighting the Chris Evans Guy, the stunt the do you have to fight a stuntman and there's also dudes that are wearing green screen. Mo. Cap. Suits that blend into the background until they come screaming at you and like assistant directors assistance come at you with like swing lights and Shit. Like when you fight Nega Scott, it's like set in a graveyard and there's like Zombie versions of the characters popping out of the ground. You Got Ninjas and Samurais when you're when you're trying to defeat the Ninja. Girl. I think Japanese twins eventually form Voltron robot that you have to go to the rooftop to defeat like their individual hands and then their chest platforms and all that stuff. Yeah, it's super. It's it's. It's really fucking elaborate. They spend a lot of money and time on that game and it's criminally underappreciated. Yeah. We've got to mention Scott, pilgrim, the film, right we've got to mention Howell integrated. You know that the idea of a game is into Scott Pilgrim because. It's not just you know the coins pop out of people or there's like round one or whatever, which the journalist Bill. Hader doing those voices, he's credited as voice in this movie. I did not. That's cool. Yeah. That's cool But the end of this movie the battle with Gideon. He uses a game mechanic to defeat him right that one up that he grabs. He you know he dies, and then he comes back with his one up his extra life and Yeah, the movie is made. At is absolutely made for a time when gaming is getting big You know it's always I've always been Gamer. So I feel like gaming has always been a big thing. It certainly hasn't and it is probably did before two thousand ten when this movie was made sure it's gotten even bigger but now yeah now it's just bleeding over into movies and and the novels and music and everything. I married some time ago I think it was maybe about ten years ago that like video games make more money than Hollywood. Yes, and is not even close anymore like I I read what was it the the last of US moved. Four million copies in its first weekend. Like, if that was film that was a film, it would make a billion dollars in a single fucking weekend. Yeah I mean it happened is probably on rockstars back. And Ray dead cell. So many free copies that sure colorady like yeah. Like the EA Games like there's some by but like there's this like you know like the last of us to doesn't have nearly the cultural significance that lack of injuries does. But when you're talking about the number of people playing and how much money it's making, it's night and day. it's it's insane how much money's come go in and that's all it. It's cool to see these crossovers in that. In kind of like, you know because I think other movies have tried to capitalize on that like the movie doom you know had that infamous kind of like four minute first-person sequence a Kinda SORTA works, but this is just more of like you know in the middle of fighting. A hit Combo racking up and Keio people and it it it does the classic like Street fighter k. o and and it just kind of affects that you you get it. You know yeah and it's built around that. It's not. It's not like something that they said Oh well. You know this is a game movie. So Shit, we gotta do something game like I dunno let's put. Let's strap a camera to somebody's head and do No. This is built on ground up with gamers in mind and I. liked it is woven in organically like you said, even the P. Bar like there's so many things. Like that unlike and also. They use like very, very comic book way like I when you go into Scott's apartment and you see that like Kieran Culkin remember his name scared navy he literally owns everything except for one shitty poster and Scott, Scott's actual coat and then there's US I forget this someone used this word on Brandon routh. he's like, do you even know what that word means is like yeah, and then like this something popped out of his head says he doesn't. or other things like were. Ramonic- throughout the whole film is constantly correcting Scott's like your seven evil ex boyfriends she's like seven evil. And then like when he finally makes the realization that you know his girlfriend had a lesbian lover lover, it goes into his brain and there's tile that goes doesn't get it to gets it and it just goes. All the way over I don't know I can see like my dad watching that because you don't, you don't need to understand how these video game mechanics on like they don't. They're they enhancer appreciation. I see them being annoying if you don't get it but as a Gamer in someone that likes that kind of frenetic you know a editing style because I love like Shit. Cranked movies man like the average cut scene is point two, five seconds the average length of cut like that stuff that just like fucking move and move and move and crazy shit happen all the time. I love that stuff and Scott Pilgrim is probably the most accessible version of that Yeah and still to this day, I can't think of a movie to does it better And then La, certainly less offensive than crank. Much, less expensive than Krankl Shit. So I'll do it for our coverage of the tenth anniversary of Scott Pilgrim vs world. Next time on Bob move pulp movies. We're GONNA be talking about bill and Ted's excellent adventure. Do you know why? Because Bill and Ted her face in the music. "The pilgrim family drifted around Alaska for a few years. They lived in fairbanks and then in homer for short time. But neither town offered Papa the seclusion. He desired for his family. He knew as soon as he drove into. Mccarthy in January two thousand two. This was where he wanted to settle. He did not plan to live in McCarthy itself but he wanted his home to be near enough to the small town so he could get supplies. They're on the Weekly Mail plane. Nail dear ish who was in the process of remodeling the McCarthy Lodge. For the summer tourism season was the first to notice the strange arrival of the pilgrim family. The temperature hovered at twenty degrees below zero. But most of the huddled together in the open beds of two pickup trucks. When the trucks roll to a stop in front of the lodge the kids sprang from the beds and began looking around town excitedly. A man with long grey hair along beard a weathered face and piercing blue eyes climbed from the cab of one of the trucks and introduced himself to Garish. As Pilgrim Darioush invited the family into the Lodges Dining Room. Pilgrim had come to McCarthy with only ten of his kids rose stayed back with the younger kids. While Papa chucked out McCarthy and scouted available Property Papa liked what he saw McCarthy and the pilgrims charmed the dozen residents who gathered at the lodge to meet them. The pilgrim kids grabbed fiddles guitars and a mandolin from their trucks and put on an impromptu bluegrass concert for the crowd. The children were cute shy and various religious. Most of the residents welcomed the pilgrims. But at least one in the crowd of townspeople saw papa pilgrim for the con. Man He was papa. Pilgrim soon returned to McCarthy with country rose and their fifteen children. They bought an abandoned mine. Fourteen miles from McCarthy up the mountain and accessible only by the nearly impassable McCarthy Green Butte Road Papa called their new Home Hillbilly Heaven Hill Billy. Heaven could be reached by Snow Machine Horse and even on foot if you didn't mind hiking for a day since it was impossible to drive a truck up the road. Though pilgrim arranged for supplies to be delivered by Bush plane or by horse the freight costs soon became too expensive. However and in the fall of two thousand and two. When the family ran short on funds the pilgrims began to secretly use a bulldozer to clear the old road to town since the road ran through the wrangle. Saint Elias National Park and Park Regulations Prohibited Clearing Park land or altering the old road in any way. Pilgrim did his best to hide his illicit actions from the park service. The following spring when Park Rangers discovered what the pilgrims had done to the road. They began surveying the damage. And prepared a lawsuit against Robert Hale. Aka Papa Pilgrim. Pilgrim wasted. No time preying on the generosity of other Alaskans and asking for their sympathy and support. He posted the letters around McCarthy about the unfairness of the park service. Denying his simple God fearing family access to their home. He invited a television news. Crew Anchorage so it's viewers could see the families simple lifestyle and Papuka talk about how much they needed the old road to haul supplies to their home. In Hillbilly Heaven. The charming news piece created support for the pilgrims and anger against the Park Service. The story about the pilgrims and their simple godly lifestyle. High Above McCarthy in Hillbilly Heaven Spread to national and international news organizations the Washington Post The economist. Cnn and the BBC all did stories on the pilgrims and they're backward lifestyle. Zealous reporters uncovered. The Story of hails passed. But the pilgrim patriarch revelled in all the attention and greedily accepted proffered charity. He pushed his charming in front of the cameras and never missed an opportunity for his family to perform their gospel tunes. For the press residents of McCarthy who had I found the pilgrim's charming and had welcome them with open arms soon began to grow tired of the clan. At the beginning of the two thousand four summer tour season pilgrim dress some of his younger children in ragged outfits and stationed them by the footbridge into McCarthy where they sold tickets for a bus ride up to the Kennecott mine. Other local families already provided a bus service to the mind and the residents McCarthy resented the pilgrims for stealing the business the pilgrims also set up a squatters camp down the street from the McCarthy Lodge where they stayed when they were in town. Not only did they encroach on the properties of others but they brought their livestock into the camp forcing their neighbors to deal with the smell and excrement from the animals. Mccarthy residents repeatedly asked the pilgrims to move their squatters camp but when they refused Stevens Harper a park ranger and a neighbor whose driveway had been partially blocked by the pilgrims possessions approached their camp driving a bulldozer. Two dozen McCarthy residents arrived on the scene to support Harper and Papa. Pilgrim finally moved the camp to a parcel of land. He'd recently purchased at the end of the McCarthy road. Papa pilgrim continue to teach his kids. It was okay for them to steal equipment and animals from others and at the father had a run in with one of the locals he often sit and Joshua and Jacob his two oldest sons to follow or frighten them when Park Service. Rangers attempted to climb the road to talk to pilgrim. Some of the oldest kids at first followed the Rangers on horseback and then blocked their way when they got closer to Hillbilly Papa. Pilgrim liked to preach his version of the Gospel and when others disagreed with him he'd get mad. And leave the people of McCarthy found Papa pilgrim overbearing and self righteous and. They were concerned about the welfare of the kids. The older kids often sported large bruises and people wondered if the bruises had been caused by a rough life outdoors or was there source more sinister. A few realized most of the kids could not read and they wondered if the children had ever received formal schooling..

"This store is not specifically a Taylor murder. Although I do believe it does involve a murder. I chose the story because it describes the independent streak of many Alaskans and their desire to live without government. Interference it also conveys the friend late open nature of Rural Alaskans and their willingness to trust others and go the extra mile to lend a helping hand to strangers this story also unfortunately reveals the nature of those few individuals who moved to Alaska to escape their sins only to repeat them here and become an ugly stain on the fabric of the Alaska Landscape in most wilderness areas in Alaska. You are likely to find a few people who've chosen to live in such a remote area because they want to escape. Societal norms and public scrutiny. Most of these individuals are good. People who simply don't WanNa be bothered by the government don't WanNa be told how to raise their children or want to be able to follow their own spiritual beliefs. Alaska does have laws though. Alaska is not the wild west. Papa pilgrim probably could have hidden off the grid in the Alaskan Wilderness and continued his horrible rain over his family. Had he not taken on the National Park Service and turned a spotlight on himself and his family? My first podcast episode chronicled the mail. Day murders in tiny McCarthy Alaska the ghost mining town in the heart of the huge Rangel Saint Elias National Park. Most of this story is also said McCarthy and it begins where my last story ended Chris Richards. One of the survivors of the McCarthy Mail Day massacre died when his cabin burned a few days before Christmas in two thousand one at almost the same moment when flames leapt from richards cabin. The Pilgrim clan marched into McCarthy PAPA. Pilgrim country rose and their fifteen children made quite a spectacle in the streets and McCarthy Alaska.

"If he understands does he understand what was accomplished for him at the Cross does he understand the provisions that was made for him. No probably he does not yet. And many of you don't squinting he's looking. He's trying to see that narrow gate but he too far from it to see it then. Evangelists S Christian. Do you see the distant light I think so I think so. He says evangelist is asking Christian. Did you see even a glimmer of hope in the reading of the Scriptures? I think so. Jesus cannot be found without the word of God without the testimony of other Christians. This is a supernatural work of God. It's by grace. It is not earned. It is not something that we deserve. It is a gift of grace so evangelist tells Christian. Keep that light in your eye and go directly toward it and as you go you will begin to see the neuropathy that has laid out for you so continue reading the Bible until Jesus the Son of God is revealed to you in all of his beauty to understand what I'm saying to you today I just shared with you. The first part of the chapter of Pilgrim's progress do you understand what have said? It is impossible for you to be saved if you have never been. The place to begin is not trying to force certain obedience. The place to begin is to honestly survey the condition of your life before God to honestly look with an open mind and an open heart saying Jesus show me who I am and then show me who you are. Let me see you. Plainly Jesus and the Holy Spirit begins to stir in a man or a woman's heart and draw them out after righteousness after repentance after a broken nece with tears for the way we have offended the Holy God of Heaven For we have offended. God mightily the Christian faith is not about performing certain duties being like a certain culture. No the Christian faith is about repenting of the wickedness of our hearts and reading the scriptures and searching after Jesus until he begins to reveal the true nature of our own heart the wickedness of our own heart many of you have not been able to leave the sin in your life because you have skipped this vital step of humbling your heart before God and letting him teach you who you are in reality before him and why you should be cast into hell. You skip that part. That's the place of the narrow gate. Were the arrows of the enemy or piercing. After rusted take our life where were burdened down with a heavy burden that we can barely make it and we cry out and say Oh God I need you. This is what I'd done I repent. I'm sorry I turned from the sin. Jesus.

We would always gather other around a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve one Christmas and by the way my father did not want a Christmas tree. He said was a pagan holiday. But my mother always insisted on a tree that year. We didn't have very much money and there were no packages under the tree. It was bearing. We had a tree that we brought in from outside we head fashioned a stand for and it stood there almost naked. Aw and mother called us to dinner and there. "Book pilgrim's progress that we have shared many times but today i wanna return to it for very specific reason we're living in a world that is so desperately deceived and and searching for what is vile and wicked we're living in the day when everything that is righteous seems to be cast down and everything that is evil seems to be lifted up how do we deal with all of this as christian is walking toward that promise land he is met once more by evangelist evangelists begins to talk with him about about the crown that is about the final reward of entering into the presence of jesus and he says quoting first corinthians nine twenty four to twenty seven the crown just before you ended is an incorruptible one so run the you may obtain it many who have set out to win that crown even after they've gone quite a long way on the journey allow other people to come into their life and snatch away that crown that victory so evangelists this coming now to christian and he's saying hold on don't let anybody take that away from you you were not yet get out of the reach of the gun shot of the devil you've not yet resisted under death and you're striving against in let the kingdom be always before you unbelievable certainty inconsistency the things that are yet unseen let nothing that is on this side of each journal life get inside of you above all take care of your own hearts and resist the lust resist those things which are deceitful that are desperately wicked set your face like flint you have all of the power of heaven and earth on your side now is they continue talking with evangelist he began to share with them that they would soon go through a town called vanity fair and then they would be set upon by enemies in this town who would be determined men to kill them or did turn them aside from the path of righteousness she'll be faithful under death he says and the king will give you in that great day a crown of life continues i saw in my dream that when they had left the borders of the wilderness they immediately saw town before them the name of the town is vanity and then the town there is a year round market called vanity fair it bears it's name because the town that host the fear is only concerned with things that are unimportant in vain things that are worth less things that are without hope now i've been curious about okay what is the difference between vanity fair in the city of destruction the city of destruction if you remember the story of a vanity fair the city of destruction is that place firm which christian fled why did he flea well he saw in the scriptures that the city was going to be destroyed but it's going to be burned but what really prompted him to leave the city of destruction was the conviction found in the scripture regarding his own in he was so convicted did end so burdened by that sin that they had to flee for his life and so we have the story of this allegorical story of bunyan written in the sixteen hundreds we find bunyan writing the christian is so concerned about is and then so under conviction regarding the ugliness of his own personal life that he flees from the city of destruction and you remember he went through the swamp despondency almost gave up hope of ever finding any relief many like pliable who come to the swamp despond finally say i'm not going to make it through that i'm going back i'll learn how to liv with my sin and as one brother other wrote to me this last week i've not overcome my cigarettes there's a dead nest in his tone he's not overcome his sin and so he has continued delivered in the city of destruction well what's the difference between that and vanity fair vanity fair is the system of the culture it is outside side of my own personal sin that has already been dealt west vanity fair is a place we must all go through we are all in fact going through vanity fair so what is the difference the answer is the christian and faithful have been changed they have dealt with their personal sin they have repetitive that personal sin and they have turned aside from it they now see everything through heavens authorized the schemes the traps enticements entertainments of the world they all see this in a new way so now they're going to encounter the corporate system system the nine lates all the forces who would block the progress you see what are these systems today it is not acceptable double in or culture just say that homosexuality lesbianism transgender ism sodomy it's not acceptable to say the these are all out of pit of hell they are of satan they are seeing they are wrong they will take a person to hell that's not acceptable just say in our culture likewise it's not acceptable in many parts of our culture to take a stand against the murder of babies they call it a woman's rights never mind the placenta is the different dna than hers never mind that a woman is supposed to have absolute rule over that life that she is giving birth to so abortion and is very popular today death is very popular and when we stand on the side of life we are cursed in today's culture we're also told in today's culture that everything is about success about money everything is about having my way doing it my way everything is about dominance in control not about submission and love today were told that women must dominate of course you understand when there was one god there was one rule and it was the relational rule it was a ruler ship that did not dominate it was not a ruler ship that manipulated it was not a ruler ship that exercise its authority over others but rather it was a servant leadership it was not one the stablishment self as i'm the boss in our culture today we have three god's we have or lord god of heaven we have ourselves and then we have everybody else and everybody's trying to dominate everybody else and control and say what has to happen but obviously that's not biblical servant leadership however is biblical where relation lay we love and share in top together everything jesus did for us was relational dying on the cross that doesn't mean there are no rules doesn't mean there's chaos it doesn't mean that there's no authority there is authority with authority is not to dominate authority is to guide to protect in the shelter but in today's culture that's not the rule of the day so we have leftist progressives socialist communist we have all kinds of 'isms we have the pope is he brings destruction and to the catholic church do his wicked beliefs turning aside from the fundamentals of the face we have on every side the systems of today of control that's vanity fair so essentially there's no difference between vanity fair in the city of destruction vanity fair is simply the city of "pilgrim" Discussed on National Prayer Chapel, Pilgrim's Progress
"In this book, pilgrim's progress, we've been talking about the narrow path, and the broad path. And we, of course, all recognize that the narrow passes the path of holiness and the broad path is the way of the world. But could I tell you a secret? In truth, the narrow path. Is the wide path. And the broad path. Is a tiny little road called prison. It looks broad to us from our perspective, because we don't see the fullness of God's glory. In this world. We want everyone to approve of us. We wanna be recognized. We wanna be accomplished. We wanna have our lifestyle. It's all the broad path that leads us to hell. The path that we call the narrow path the highway of holiness kings, I way. It's wide enough for all of us to walk. And it leads straight to the gate of the celestial city. And you have to make decision are you going to allow God to cut your heart? Are you going to allow the Holy Spirit to come on cats feed into your life and begin to grow conviction of your sin or you're going to push him away? And are you going to say, you can't have entrance into my life? Because if you come into my life, you're going to spoil my deal. If you wanna receive the Holy Spirit, I'm going to give you three steps. They're not original with me. They come out of revival. Number one. A deep conviction. Of your personal depravity. Revival begins. With that deep conviction of my sin. And today if as you're sitting here you're saying, you know, I can't really think of any sin, and I can't think of any real depravity in my life. And I don't see the vile -ness of myself. The newer far far from the kingdom of God. The closer, you come to Jesus. The voice vileness you'll see in your own heart. The more you come into his presence, the greater will be the conviction that there is absolutely no way for you to ever. Enter into the kingdom of God saved by the grace of the blood of Jesus that nothing, you can do will earn you that place. That it is a gift of grace from first to last that only by the power of the blood of Jesus can this violence ever, be wiped out of my heart. Only by the blood of Jesus, can these since ever, be forgiven me. If you're living unconscious that vial -ness of your heart today, you are far from Jesus and far from the kingdom of God. And you are subject to the judgments that are coming upon this earth. The second step. There must be an entire devotion of the whole man to God service and a hearty obedience to his whole will. In other words, there has to come in your heart. As Jesus convicts. You buy a spirit of your sin and you pray through victory. And, you know, the presence of God, you give yourself utterly and completely into the hand of God. You don't hold back anything. You don't hold back friends. You don't hold back money. You don't hold back anything from him. You know, your sin, you know, the kind of person you are without the blessing of Jesus, in your heart, you know, that you would be as a Hitler, if left unchecked by the, Holy Ghost, if the restraining power of the spirit was removed from your life, you know, you would plunge into the depths of vileness, if you don't know that about yourself. Then you will not take the next step and give yourself totally into the hand of God, because that alone is the only place where victory is won over sin. I wanna say just one more quick thing about that. Some of us have in our experience sinned against God repented, and then syndicates God and then repented and then sinned against God. Why? Because we're utterly self absorbed. Because our focus is on our own life, and our own trauma, and our own needs, and desires, not on Jesus. You can't overcome sin by focusing on sin, you overcome sin by focusing on Jesus by putting your faith in him by saying Jesus only you can deliver me and I'm now standing by faith. I am delivered from this wickedness, and I hate this sin that. And you name it, if it's out go hall, I hate this alcohol in the name of Jesus. I have nothing to do with you devil. I renowned shoe in the name of Jesus. I am given into his hand, and I will serve Jesus alone. Until you take that position you'll have no real victory over sin. There must be hardy obedience, and I love when he says. Not just obedience. It's not grudging obedience. Have you ever was the child corrected them? I can remember my daughters. They would finally do what I ask them to do. Sometimes with this scale on their face. It was..
