Belichick reaches milestone as Patriots top Raiders 36-20
"Everyone is time for the bonus episode postgame recap for Vegas Nation podcast. I'm your host Heidi Fang and I'm joined with our readers writers, Ed Greenie, Adam. Hill we're going to break down what happened here in the Raiders Lost Thirty six to twenty against the New England Patriots here Gillette Stadium in Foxborough at an ir up in the press box Adam back in Vegas a from my vantage point it was. A lot of mistakes made by the raiders, which is something you can't do against the bill belichick coach team. So we're GONNA get all into that here but I I want to remind everybody that we are brought to you by Salmon Ash, indeed visa and also favor. So make sure to subscribe wherever you're listening and what was your first take on what you saw out in the field today with the raiders. You're right. They did everything you can't do and win on the road or anywhere turn the ball over three times. Once rent on. Didn't protect car when they were driving. Me fumbled the Fumble Alina Game Matter Games already overby fumbled the end zone. In the second half, they just wore down defensively I actually done the first thirty minutes be interested at him. I think thought the first thirty minutes they played. As good. A defense as they haven't a while let's be honest. Thirteen points here cam help them a lot. He wasn't any third, but they were down on the second Apple Sikhism Derek. Carr in the offense couldn't stand field. He gave up two hundred and fifty yards total rushing late Sony Michelle when expert in its players per talking, you know these of League so they were down and they just couldn't match. Match up. So a bad game they printed everything you can do and what on the road so Adam how much in fact that these running bags like just through the defense offered their game because I don't think they were looking to contain the likes of three different running backs in this one I think they prepared to contain Cam Newton? What was your thoughts on the running game? I think I was definitely a part of it and I think there was definitely adjustments made. By the Patriots coaching staff because as as ED put out for the first half of the, Patriots were able to run the ball somewhat. But I thought a it wasn't. There wasn't those explosive plays. There wasn't those big plays downfield and it was a kind of picking up some yards here. They're moving the ball effectively but not really gashing the raiders defense and then. They figured out something in the run game after halftime and I'll be interested to find out the later in the week. Interested to get the the all twenty two film comes out like Tuesday. Look a little what happened but I think just at first glance without really looking into what they were doing on the line maybe differently. They definitely started to go to some more cutback plays where they I thought really were able to take advantage of some over pursuit of the writer side in particular from Jonathan Abram, who you know, we know what he can do. In terms just flying around offensively and having people would kind of sending a message for that defense but at the same time. You can use that aggression against him and I think the Patriots kind of figure that out a little bit and it really hit him with a big plays on a place where he got into the gap, he was near the bulk area but just couldn't make up Adams exactly right and and they're going to have to here's the thing about a player John Neighbor might think they love is aggressiveness in his hitting all that he's got a swagger Jim and I. Hate to say this, but sometimes, you just have to you have to balance that it's hard to tell a guy like that. Don't play this way but Adams wait we should for resod against Christian McCaffrey, over pursues too much when you take the battling new pursue Sunny Michelle Christian McCaffrey, they're gonNA come back will go so Yeah. They just didn't play the run wellness second atoms right they adjusted and you have to give Michelle credit like I said when you go For, an average of thirteen yards of Kerry and I don't know if he's ever average per carry more than seven in a games and you also have saved in job I am. But they did they didn't play offensively were out of rhythm Waller. We'll talk about that I know atoms writing thoughts. Darren WELLM was non factor when you get a lot of good at the bill Belgium at he talked about. How good daring waller as well. Guess what he must have died because they ran every defense coverage double team run in stem and stopped him. So atom I know you you wrote about this mean, what did you hear the game to her? How they? You know bottle up there wall I thought it was a group effort I. think that's what of expected to hear from the Patriots Bill. Belichick obviously didn't go into detail about what he did. I think it was just a lot of deception what they were doing offensively disguising it and Bella check pointed out. Hey, it wasn't somebody covering him necessarily a lot of zone. We played a lot of you know bracket coverage a lot of. Men under there was a lot of different things. Defensively. On Waller but I think it was more just about the looks of they're giving up the line and never letting the raiders. No. Before the play what kind of coverage is GonNa be on Waller? Want Credit Anybody I. Think mccourty would be the one that you would like added. Say. Devin mccourty that Dinnie. Tremendous job on him but it was a little bit of everybody kind of in the mixer.

C.I.A. Operatives in the Early Years of the Cold War
"Scott Anderson joins us now from the catskills. He is a contributing writer for the New York, Times magazine, and the author of many books. His latest is called the quiet Americans four CIA spies. Of the Cold War tragedy in three acts, Scott Welcome back to the podcast. Thanks much nice to be here. So you are allowed on the podcast to talk about your previous book Lawrence in Arabia which came out in twenty thirteen hand, which of course feels like now centuries ago which makes it clear to our listeners are longtime listeners that this is not your first. Book. Involving spies I'm curious what what's the draw for you but I think Speiser inherently fascinating in not just to an awful lot of people and of thought about what is I think it's the the allure of having a secret life. I think that I think that for an awful lot of people this idea that you have a whole separate identity is really fascinating New People. What I was drawn to in both the Lawrence and with in the quite America's the foresee a officers I follow is that in both cases, this was at a time when individuals out in the field had a tremendous freedom of action. So it wasn't. People sitting behind desks following policy that they're actually out in the field doing crazy stuff. You also have a personal connection to the story right in terms of what your father did for living you talk a little bit about that. Sure. My father was agricultural adviser for the Agency for International Development, which was a branch of the State Department. I grew up in. East. Asia in in Korea and Taiwan as Indonesia. and. So this was the nineteen fifties, nineteen sixties when I came along American government workers abroad often in those sorts of countries often were two hats whatever their official job was my father's job as agriculture adviser but it was also part of this great anti Communist crusade was happening around the world. So the upfront hearts and minds, soft power aspect of my father's work was working on agrarian reform in line with countries like these countries were were the land was was had been controlled infra centuries by all darkies. But the the more hard power in the darker side of what my father was doing was was setting up rural vigilante squads, home guard militias to watch over the local populace and to make sure that they weren't being swayed by the communist in certainly in countries like Taiwan or South Korea. If you were exposed or accused of being a leftist, your life was not going to go. Well, you know I'm now getting a sense of why one of the four characters in your previous book was an agronomist perhaps. That's right. Yeah it's well It's it's an interesting thing because. It just for national development was often used by the CIA as a cover because. Are Out, in the field, they're not, they're not saying, I'm destined to capitol there often out among the local population and probably have a better sense of what's happening. Outside what you one thing I'll say I've noticed over time in different countries. I've been almost invariably the ex Patriot community that knows best what's happening in the country are tend to be the people are out in the field in often the Middle East is the oil guys. They have a sense much more than than people sitting around in the capital. Let's start with frank wizner. The first person you mentioned, and this is not the the first book to be written at least in part about wisner who was he and what made him. So central to the story wizards amazing Turkey was a corporate lawyer who was working at a Wall Street firm when even before World War Two broke out and he quit his law firm to join the navy, he ended up being an operative for the office to teacher services, which is the the wartime intelligence agency of the of the army that they owe asset kind of the precursor to the CIA. That's right. That's right and he ends up being A. Kind of the first American to to to witness. The Soviet takeover of country in Eastern Europe, and this was in Romanian to summer of nineteen forty. Four So full year before the war ended and a wizard was on the ground as a as an oasis operative and just watch the strong arm tactics did really a matter of weeks led the Soviets to take control the country he and he was sending cables back to Washington telling telling them what are so good allies doing he sees the say he has the same experience in eastern Germany at the end of. The war in watching the way the Soviets for taking over, he goes back to his law from for couple of years for the complete unhappy, and then when the CIA starts up in nineteen forty seven, they have this idea that they wanna start a covert operations branch of of the CIA called the Office of Policy Coordination and frank listeners chosen to head that the name was deliberately chosen to be really boring. That's right and in fact, the name itself, the Office of policy coordination was was so top secret that even you can't even say the name out loud for twenty five years. So in that role wizner e created, what what he called the mighty world, which was this vast covert operations umbrella of a operating throughout the world and everything from hard power aspects of it like dropping dropping partisans behind the iron curtain to everything to cultural stuff voice. Of America. Radio Free Europe that was all came out of the Office of Policy Coordination.

"You're going to be okay because they are going to get confused. But. Particularly when you deal with a young defense when you're showing them something and making them make a decision off of that, and then you can make your reading fro based on how they react. You'RE GONNA be okay and I think we're GONNA see a lot of that on Sunday I know the opening script mcdaniels if it goes as planned is GONNA BE MR action I can't be you know. Goes motions, play actions. You know all over the place because this is a very young and inexperienced defense like I said in the very well at least there will tell you a very complex scheme. So I think there's a lot spinning those heads of guys like David Arnett, for example, who is in his third NFL game trying to master this scheme that you that match coverages and you have to play over the man as well, and you have a bunch of different things going on mark. "Numbers, but certainly modest numbers today. 162 yards through the air in a touchdown, nine carries 27 yards matter because it's all getting done. New England's two and one and camp says his personality is messing with this team from walking in day one. There's there's an aura. That you get when you plan for when you play as a member of the New England Patriots, and that ORAC can sometimes be like are saying Is this the Patriot way to a degree from the outside looking in? But from the inside looking out, man, These guys are really You know, they really enjoy the process as well as myself and me being a member. I'm just lucky to be here. But Mark I WanNa talk about the raiders because they are playing the raiders on Sunday in Foxborough let Stadium Jon Gruden. He's had some fun. I. Would say in the first two weeks of the season you saw at reaction that have with. Mike. Mayo. Falling the win over New Orleans last week on Monday night so. I think exciting for Vegas but are you buying this is this is this team really there or was that more drew brees showing his age one night I need love beating Carolina who a lot of people think are in the mix potentially the Trevor Lawrence reach stakes at New Orleans? Has Issues Right now you know with Michael Thomas out that offense looks to struggle looks to be struggling and there are questions about wreaths and so I'm not buying yet. I think what's interesting about the raiders is. For years to knock on Derek, Carr has been doesn't throw ball downfield. I'll be last year I. Think is averaged at the target was six point three, which was seconds to last in the league. And through a couple of games right now at six point shoe might have those flipped either way it's. Basically. The same but with one five, point five last week against the raiders six point nine, they did some more vertical downfield. The absolute tree talented the wide receiver position Brian Etheridge and rugs they have some guys that can get on top of you. Derek Waller is going to be a problem, and so I, think it could be a bit more aggressive downfield. Carcass stay aggressive downfield. This could be quietly offense I'm not fully buying. He added look in the AFC West you've got home to deal with it. So you know you don't think this is a team that's going GonNa, win the division, but they could pose a problem..

"People do they like to these money line all chalk parlays where they parley a bunch of favorites against the money night you know like a minus two, seventy, five of minus thirty, five minus one, ninety, five, Farley them altogether always favorites and your game plus one, seventy five or whatever the heck. The number is so people like to do that So if if there's not a lot of upsets, those parlays cash and left or right. So again, the straight waiters weren't too bad for us. You know we had some really big wins that Kansas City gain the chargers. I mean the against the spread that's against the spread that was a massive winter force, and there's a couple other big games in there but but the public had huge winners and the the the teasers in those moneyline parlays just rectus. Got It. That's A. That's a tough beat. I would say for the books there but I think a lot of people would say, Hey, we were we were owed one against you guys so. I'm sure that it will turn around the other way too. I wanted to talk about the AFC East ause in a second. But actually what me more is that you do have Cam Newton in slowly climbing up the MVP ladder but he's still not even had a Josh Allen or in the top five of them vp odds right now why? Why don't you guys like Cam? So. Low. We we like Cam and we sixteen to one. He's a lot you. When you talk about the beginning of the season, here's a lot lower. So he's making a move You know he he's been impressive hell. Yeah. He keeps this I ended the big with cameras. We could stay on the field right You gotta factor that you gotta factor that in everything that's factored into the Patriots odds that's factored into. Cam Newton MVP odds. You know that that's just the elephant in the room the dudes healthy. Hell. Yeah. I mean I like the Patriots odds to do anything and I liked Cam Newton to do anything but you know. Cuz this is you know off with the personality to Seattle has in the secondary if nikhil Harry can't get going in this game and find some sort of a rhythm against these Corners then you know, I think some of the rookie season struggling the rookie season concerns kind of start to creep into this year for sure. Yeah, if he can't get anything going against whoever's playing cornerback on the the left side then yeah, that would definitely be a concern and if he can't then it's hard to see where sustained offense for the Patriots might come from and that's not saying that the Seahawks defense is good cuz I don't think they are but you you don't generally need some sort of receiving options to score points in this league. Absolutely. All right, the last question here. I wanted to get I'm putting you on the spot a little bit, but I wanted to ask you if there's one player who we don't talk about not the not the Wilsons not DK met cast that are that's on this team that is really shining make one or you think it's kind of an under-the-radar type of player. Not a week one. But God this is really impressive the Seahawks traded for him from the Lions for a fifth-round pick midseason last year and the Seahawks defense was much much better after they acquired him. They they really strong. At the safety position last year. So they they've gone from very bad safety plates quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams, which is really exciting. He had a pretty quiet game on Sunday, but he still an exciting fun playing maybe he'll show up more this coming week. Awesome. So I've been do me a favor and tell people about your database and where they can find it cuz I you just send me the link the other day and it is an awesome job resource. I hope very very soon and if they have not already, so I just tell people what you're doing cuz I think it's amazing that you're giving it away for free that's just ridiculous like BFF charges like $300, you know a year for the same level of content. So it wouldn't tell them where they can find it and what it's all about. You know, so kind of the high-level philosophy is that if you're going to tell people to use better stats as I often do then it's kind of long. To not Point people in the direction of finding those. So so basically the goal is to make these stats laikipia per play or completion percentage over expected things like that more accessible to people who want to be able to look this up and talk about it or put that it in their stories or just learn about their game things like that. So I'm kind of the main one is this statue statue is everything hosted at our bsdm which stands for running backs don't matter. Com slash stats and there's kind of a bunch of different apps where you can look up team's offensive or defensive EPA per play or quarterbacks or past frequency a bunch of stuff like that and people have a lot of people have found that it's useful and it's been great to here and hopefully that makes a very small difference in improving how we talk about the sport absolutely can get less, you know, when the team carries ball twenty times the game there's an x amount of the time or whatever..

"Yeah, if I were Bill effect, that would be absolutely the the plan I would much rather have that than trying to hook cover both Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf at the same time if Russell Wilson is playing like he did on Sunday because if especially you can speak a Metcalf if you he's an outside and you have one on coverage with no safety help like it's just an impossible situation to put your corner back into and we saw like the one time that happened they Russell Wilson just threw it in an end zone and Metcalf had a very easy touchdown. Yeah, absolutely. I wanted to ask you about DK Metcalf because I know a lot of people in New England are going to listen this and roll their eyes and say, oh we could have had DK Metcalf instead of n'keal Harry. But here we are and I think i d k I had him as my top wide receiver in that draft because of his physical tools, but now all of a sudden he started to show some Polish also, which is a really scary proposition for the rest of NFL. Yeah. He's he really progressed as the season went along last year had a big playoff game against the Eagles which is kind of his like National coming-out party and then kept right back on on Sunday. So all signs are pointing up for him. I think the marriage between him and Russell Wilson is really good because met Cavs like greatest strength is being a quarterback of the line scrimmage just running really fast dump bills in a straight line and Russell Wilson's deep ball is so good that when Metcalfe wins those battles then the ball is going to arrive and so it's been fun to watch that pairing even log. Here when the Seahawks weren't throwing the ball that much absolutely and in 2016 Bill Belichick the Patriots defense didn't do a great job of containing Russell Wilson to be honest Wilson kind of had his way with the page defense that day, but from what you've seen when Wilson struggles, you know, what's the plan? You know how the teams kind of attack him?.

"Hello. This is Stephanie and this is Talk Tales and Trivia the show where I talk about enlightening topics about society culture and the topics that affect the world we live in plus some trivia so that you yes, you can stump your family and friends is so interesting and fun. But this topic today this topic right now on this episode is not so much fun because we are coming up upon an anniversary that really truly some Americans wish had never happened and that is the September eleven attacks. This at timber eleven, attacks often referred to as nine eleven. Remember were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group. al-Qaeda? Against the United States on the morning of Tuesday September eleventh two, thousand and one some of you weren't even born but yet it affects all of us to this day. No matter how old we are the attacks resulted in two, thousand, nine, hundred and seventy, seven deaths over twenty, five, thousand injuries and substantial long term health consequences in addition to at least ten billion dollars in infrastructure and property damage. But did you know that nine eleven is the single deadliest terrorist attack and human history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States with three hundred and forty-three firefighters losing their lives and seventy two law enforcement officers losing their lives. Speaking for al Qaeda leader Osama Bin. Laden had said that quote it has become clear that the West and general and America in particular have an unspeakable hatred for Islam. It is the hatred of Crusaders terrorism against America deserves to be praised because it was a response to injustice aimed at forcing America to stop its support for Israel which kills. In. Quote. Even, though that was somewhat an admission of guilt by Osama bin Laden. He stopped short of admitting responsibility for the attacks but. Eventually, he did admit to the attacks. Yes. Shortly before the US presidential election and two thousand and four bin Laden used a taped statement to publicly acknowledge al Qaeda's involvement and the attacks on the United States he admitted his direct links to the attacks and said they were carried out because we are free. And want to regain freedom for our nation. As you undermine our security, we undermine yours bin Laden said, he had personally directed his followers to attack the world trade centers and the Pentagon. The impact of nine eleven extends beyond geopolitics though and into society and culture and. Immediate responses to nine eleven did include greater focus on home life and time spent with family. It really did hire church attendance and increased expressions of patriotism such as flying of the American flag. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks President George W Bush proclaimed Friday September, fourteenth two, thousand, and one as a national day of prayer and remembrance for the victims of the terrorist attacks on September eleventh Patriot Day officially known as National Day of service and remembrance is observed every September eleventh in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on that day Patriot's Day will be on Friday this Friday September, Eleventh Twenty Twenty also I find on Kapadia on the search of Patriots Day. The flag of the United States is flown at half-mast at the White House and on all US government buildings and establishments throughout the world Americans are also encouraged to display flags in an outside their homes as many many due to this day. Remember that Patriot Day is not a federal holiday though okay. Schools and businesses remained open and observance of the occasion and that we will never forget and that America will not be stopped or halted even for one day memorial ceremonies for the two, thousand, nine, hundred, and seventy, seven victims. Are often held, but that does not include a matter of fact at excludes the nineteen hijackers who also perished we do not memorialize them.

"Could have gotten the stock could have gotten third-and-long and instead you're looking at 32 in the Playbook is open. It's good as the plan was for Brian Flores against Tom Brady and week 17 in that matchup. I think that the benefit of having Flores was almost like he knows his own defense so well and he knows how to beat the defense when he goes up against it and what they did last year and I'm going to try break this down without a white board or anything so I can see if we can do it but they did last year was they attacked the Patriots divorce principles of the Patriots play outside shade Trail technique on a lot of plays depending on where the receiver lines up on the field, but most of the time it's outside shade Trail technique for a lot of the outside quarters wage. So what's open there? They have the rat at intermediate level who's going to the sticks. They have the Deep safety over the top to cover the post but when they don't have is that low whole player often times when the Patriots run their five, man. Schemes to you know, throw that in there as well and a lot of the times that sort of zero to five yard range is just wide open with nobody in the middle and you have a cornerback cuz out leveraged on those throws wage and I've tried to ask every single person in the building that I can what's the coaching point there. You know, what do you do there because you're giving up leverage. You have no help to the inside. You can't overplay it because then you're going to get beat over the top. So what exactly do you teach the corners to do? I think it's what you owe go ahead. I'll call on you. Yeah, actually because this is something I was studying their game plan against the Chiefs the chief did a lot of similar things where they tried to sneak attack that area. Yeah. So what the Patriot did was they would put five min on the line of scrimmage and they'll kind of mix-up where the drop is. So now this is where Fitz a much better coordinated than add you on because this is exactly where I was going with this can keep going like perfect so fits, this is ballsy there were some throws he made early in the game, especially where there was a whole player dropping directly in the area where site we're supposed to be. I know there was one more time. I tell was right there in fits just gave no apps and just done it in there if he had hesitated a second High Towers at least going to break it up. Probably picking it off. But yeah, cuz he has one interception of course definitely to pick it up. But this Patrick is he has that experience where he's not afraid to make those tight window throws if he knows where the ball has to be. So the Patriots from time to time if you're just going to keep hitting them with those kind of plays they're going to drop those Edge defenders in the shallows owns. A lot of the times you see them brush with three. That's what they're doing..

"I think with a lot of these weaknesses, but I think the the biggest issue that the Patriots had last year with this Miami team in week 17 is that Brian Flores knows all the state Secrets, right? And the one benefit that you have this year is without Tom Brady is that there are no secrets, right? You don't know one knows what's going to happen and this is such an unprecedented year in that respect. There's no preseason tape on any of these players. We have no idea how any of the coaches are thinking about closing any of these guys. That's such a big difference from a normal gear. So I agree that sort of deceptiveness that element of it. I had a Patriots pretty much know exactly who Miami is cuz remember they know wage Vannoy. They know Roberts they know Byron Jones a little bit. They know the guys that they brought in right? So it's not like those dots are foreign to them the same way that what's the cam offense going to look like in New England is to Miami. So I think Thursday A little bit of an advantage for them as well. I want to move over the other side of the ball Patriots defense force of Miami offense last year. There was a lot of those Crossing patterns those Slants those off as in Breaking routes. And of course we can talk about the big match up with DeVante Parker again Stephon Gilmore, but I'm curious here. Does your take Taylor and your opinion on you know, Miami is probably going to be the same drum a little bit of throwing those quick hitters over the middle taking advantage of the coverage rules of the Patriots. How do you go about you know, I asked a lot of the players about this and they just said, you know the typical we just moved over tighter, you know, it's obviously not that simple. So, how do we go about making sure that Miami doesn't carve them up the middle of the field again, I'm screwed cuz I was going to be my answer honestly that really is what it is because yeah, the biggest the biggest I'm not going to say mismatches, but even that game they took advantage of DeVante Parker just winning if they catch Point against Gilmore, honestly, that's what it was. A lot of people say was this worst game of the season, which is technically true. But if you watch it was a tight match up and you could tell that Flores was just it was so shaped was just exposing their Tendencies like Gilmore. They know that they knew when the Patriots went empty. They when they went empty the patrons are going to check wage which was going to be that everyone in man coverage. And basically they're trying to make sure that they don't allow anything inside like they're really just going to try drive on any in Breaking routes because there's no help there. There was one play with no more. I think it's pump to Gilmore really quickly because he thought it was going to be a quick throw because who throws deep against the Blitz in Parker ran right past and there was no route deception..

"The best and that's definitely the biggest concern about this Patriots team offensively defensively. I think it's more about regression than anything. I don't necessarily think that the players that they have in those roles going to be a problem, but they're not to turn the ball over as much they did last year most likely they're not going to have the production this point scored by the defense like they did last year and the Special Teams unit. Those types of numbers usually are not they don't and year-to-year very, well, right. Usually it's one sort of year where you got the bounces and you got the kind of the The Luck You know the puck luck as they say and hockey sort of just kind went your way right you look at the defense like the Chicago Bears a few years ago. They had that same exact season the Patriots had last year where they could just do no wrong and they were had a bunch of interceptions at a bunch of pick sixes. They were turning the ball over left and thought they were scoring on defense and they were setting the tone defensively the very next year. They kind of regressed back to the meat and we're sort of still a top-10 defense but not on that ungodly type of level. So there's going to be some sort of Turn over aggression for the Patriots ultimately offensive. It's going to come down to if Can't Get Enough chemistry with this guy's to be able execute a drop-back passing game, but we have time to get to that point and that's what I want to say into this break is that they have time to get here. It's September. We don't need to be at our best in September. They need to be at their best in December January and hopefully February so long that might be a little bit optimistic but we're going to take a quick break. Then we're going to be right back with our Dolphins Patriots preview computer systems in cars are the new normal from electronically controlled Transmissions, the touchscreen displays to dozens of.

"It's tough because of the physically demanding position. So they'd have to use a lot of bear fronts where they cover all the linemen to prevent him getting double-teamed so he can still get a good pass-rusher but he's got that sand in his pants where he can anchor down and he doesn't move against double teams and he's way better at it than I think a lot of people realize because it's a brewery this position. He got Lawrence guy who's all about Going to be a disruptive presence Chase winovich who's another underrated run Defender. I frankly misdiagnosed him as being an undersized Edge Defender. Well, that's true for what Belichick usually does. He's bigger than life. He's about the size of a Patriots Modern Edge Defender where he's about 2:45 so he can move cuz he's much bigger than that. He's not gonna be able to do much else. He's not going to give you that speed that you need for athletic quarterbacks. I think he even has the potential slide into Kyle Van Noy his role is that guy who really collapses the pocket sometimes has the speed that just give you something to think about and also sets a hard Edge because you're not seeing a lot of those Road grading right tackles that just overwhelm you with power and those are things they can adjust to just personnel and that's before we can get to the rookies who you know, Anthony Jennings and Joshua J can be used all over the front. They're not just Edge guys are not just linebackers. They can do a lot of things wrong and they're catching on quicker than even Belichick said he expected and Kyle Duggars going to be in the box. So I think you have a lot of pieces and obviously John Simon if you know me at all, you know that I am in love with John Simon. Yep. A man, so I'm not even going to go into that. Just check my feed. But yeah, there's a lot of Veteran pieces that I think people are overlooking because there's a lot of tape which makes perfect sense, but they'll also got young guys who have the pedigree like these wage in Michigan we're talking about it's not a huge learning curve. Like they were using schemes that double-check inquires about every offseason. He's talking to their coaches to find out their password schemes. The Patriots line games are a lot of what went wrong in Joshua J. We're doing in college and pretty Jennings was used as a coverage guy, you know, dropping 15 yards downfield, even though he thought of as an edge Defender because if you're going to be an exam a Defender you have to do a lot of things or do one thing took a saintly well. He does a lot of things in above-average level. So again, that's another position where there's not a lot of tapes. So I understand the skepticism but there's a lot of talent that I think we just need to see how they jell on Southfield. Once they get together right? I think the biggest thing is what you hit on is the scheme and we know that the scheme is sound right. We know that they get what want out of it when they have productive players in those spots and two months. I think you know we all want the Stars right? We all want the hightowers the you know, I thinking Von Miller right now because of his injury or those are the types of players that just can dominate one-on-one without help from the same thing. That's obviously a great benefit for a lot of teams, but I think with the Patriots in particular and what we've seen over the last couple of years, you know, since that 2018 Super Bowl really is that you know, they have role players are sort.

"And now I'm going to bring in my guest Taylor Kyle's Taylor. Thank you very much for doing this. I'm glad we are here together to break down some of this tape up to you are still muted Taylor wage. I knew that was going to happen Okay, this is this a good joke Point here because we have obviously experienced these Zoom calls with the players with the coaches. They're muted sometimes were muted sometimes and this is just a world we're living in right now. I saw it happen with one of edelman's interviews and I was like how silly and I'm like I told myself don't forget to unmute yourself. But that's our relationship. Anyway, we don't we don't do that buttoned up stuff. So now that's a good intro. There we go, and it's only one way to do it and that was the way to do it. But thanks for coming on Taylor. I really appreciate if you like I thought Go check out Taylor t Kyle's 39 on Twitter. He has done a great job of breaking down this Patriots Dolphins matchup already beating me to a lot of my points per usual. So we'll definitely have some overlap there for my game plan on Friday, but I want to get in some big picture Thoughts with you first Taylor, then we'll get into the match up. I think we're all really excited to see Cam Newton's debut on Sunday with the Patriots and just your thoughts of you know, kind of where this offense is going to be heading with Cam. And if you're a believer in sort of what they're doing with new and under Center. Yeah. Well, obviously, we're not going to know what happens until everybody gets on the field wage. That's a disclaimer. You have to give even though it should be implied but that being said, I'm really excited. I know earlier in the offseason when came first got here. I was saying that I think the ceiling for the offense is higher than it was a break which understandably upset some people because obviously Brady's more accomplished he's done a lot of things and he's done a lot of things that people are never seen in football, but I think it's important understand that came. You more simply because his ceiling is higher from the jump like Brady was a very pretty average athlete relative to the sport. He's playing and he maximize disability by being smarter than everyone by taking a little things in a lot of less experienced players tend to you know, take for granted and cam is someone who has been intelligent quarterback in an outstanding quarterback his entire life and he's also been someone who physically is out of office..

"But when you look at the data, that's not true it's actually the other way around so that the performance model that we built was built around the fact that when American League teams travel I'm sorry nationally teams traveled to American League teams. Stadiums saying this right I am not elitist. When the National League goes to the American League the National League team gets the D. H. But I. Think I know where you're going with this and what people assumed that it would be an advantage for the National League because they're getting an extra hitter but what is not? You know understood in that is National League teams are not accustomed to how you substitute late in Games using the D. H. whereas Yelm where American League teams are. So at essentially, it extends your bench, the D. H. Extend Your Bank Layton Games and National League teams had more trouble adjusting to that that American league teams did going to a ballpark nationally parts where the picture hits. But even if the picture hits, you know maybe once or twice a game and then gets pulled it becomes more familiar environments, the American League teams. Yeah. Yeah exactly, and so if you start with that theory with what we you start with that theory and then you can add layers to it. So again, it's going back to my original example, which was the patriots are sixty two percents. It's pretty it's a pretty good number but when you start to add layers to that, you start to eliminate games. Like. You don't have a big a poll of games to play off of. So the Patriots by Sixteen Games a year when you start to add those layers now you go down to six games a year, maybe five games a year would you probably ability of winning goes up so the average Gambler, the fun good time Gambler is going to go the sports far. He's GonNa put a hundred bucks on the Patriots he's rooting for the Patriots Anyway. This gives them something a little extra root for come on. Check you son about the cover that cover the spread you know you know. One of my best friends is a patriots fan. "Before the break John, we were talking about a score metrics I want to get more into what they are and how they are based. On Different? Data. points. Okay. All right. So what we do is we we back test like thousands and thousands of patterns and micro trends and I guess that I have a couple of here that I'll. You guys in the second at we developed them in this what we call super patterns. So it's not just one pattern it's not. Well let me explain to you. Let me learn I have one that I wrote down here. Let me just read it off for you. Because I I don't remember all these things obviously. Down Let's talk about the Patriots. Actually this is all they I'm it's actually not written down. It's typed on a piece of paper. You don't write anything down anymore panel. Yeah. You don't. You don't lose it on your screen on your laptop going between five different desktops on your right. On the cloud now. So I have everything. I, the. Let's talk about the Patriots over the last twenty years. I give you could. You could argue, but it would be a futile argument to say that the Patriots are the most success successful sports franchise in probably anywhere I? Don't think anybody has reached level of success. They are as an actual franchise wins and losses but you know how are they against the spread and that's always something that you wonder because the bookmakers are. Smart and they're able to figure out with within a few points of win a what most games are going to be. Now sometimes, you'll see a blow out that no one predicted. But if they say, it's a seven point game will usually be a six seven or eight point game the Patriots or sixty one point two percent of the last twenty years against the spread. which is very impressive. The average team, our fifty, three percent. So the Patriots are head above the best higher than I would have expected. It's very hot. Yes. Considering how smart they are Vegas in the adjustments that.

"Reason. And data data points and I know you're big on data points yeah. Point toward a trend. Exactly. Exactly. It's like, Vena. There's some browns fans watching. It's like being a browns fan and then hoping that. Sorry. I. Had to get one browns joke. They're. Fine by me I grew up rooting for the bengals. So anytime, you can dump on Cleveland and the Browns I'm good. It's so easy though you almost feel related toddler. Sometimes I'd gotten to the point now where I I don't even rip on the Browns fans anymore I'm like. You guys will get. You guys will figure it out I. Hope they do at one point. I. Actually think they are heading in the right direction I just. Because obviously speaking of analytics, they made a big push towards analytics and data points and going in that way. and has an eight off. What's that? They made that commitment last year I believe. That yeah, they did. They spend lot of money in the off season. They showed up their offensive line. They did a lot of things I. think that could make them a lot more competitive. It's really gonNA come down to the kind of coaching, the Baker Mayfield get, and that's less about analytics and more about the head of the quarterback. Unfortunately, we have no. No, there's no way to share dict. What's going to happen to a twenty five year old guy at that. But at that point over several acres is he's twenty, four, twenty, five but. Anyway. So I went back to see US getting off on football, run off on a tangent. When you're investor if you're if you're a if you've ever spent any money to try to make money whether it's stocks or property, you can buy the brand you can buy an I have an iphone somewhere around here. I don't know where it is right now probably charging. Here's my iphone so I can invest in apple because I use an iphone but that be ridiculous because that's just me saying I like the steelers. So you know when you break it down but I can also. Apple comes out with a brand new. Piece of technology every third quarter of the year and on that on that fourth quarter earnings, it comes out so well that the stock goes up and I know that if every I wait, you're on the third quarter of invest in. Apple I've could make some money. Now I know that because if I look back ten, twenty, thirty years at historical data I can see when the perfect time to invest in apple is right before the launch of a new product. A lot of people do this and seasonal trainings to like pork bellies and things like that commodities. So I do this thing sports I go back and I test data for ten fifteen sometimes twenty years and I got some data later on we'll talk about for the Patriots too because I knew I was doing a patriots podcast today so yes, I got some cool stuff you're people like so what I do is I I use the exact same principles that are using trading and I've turned them into sports and I have used sports as a market is actually used as an investment market so rather than rather than. Tell us how you got to where you are today with sports, trading systems, dot com. What was the impetus if you will for creating the website and your brisk business? Well let's talk about like where I am right now. So you are in where are you exactly Marino Mild im in Boston actually Siri Massachusetts. So I didn't tell you this when we talk for a little pre interview, but I am currently in Thailand. Really yes. You're talking to me from Thailand. So two years ago I sold I had I'm originally from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and nobody cares. Restaurants. Kept that out the other fan. Yeah we. We talked about hasn't advanced. I had the pleasure of living in. Miami for almost twenty years where I worked for a while in bars nightclubs, and then eventually owned and operated my own and a couple of years ago I. Just I got tired of what I was doing and I also found a separate bathroom myself. That was born from to two thousand and eight most people out there at least Ron my age probably remember that two thousand eight we had the super crash. You know the real estate market graduated from all the housing and all this stuff like that I was heavily invested in everything I lost a lot of money. But seven figures and. I realized that that time that everything that people told me about investing was was pretty much not true. You diversify yourself. You have all these different portfolios of different things that things won't be connected. So something goes wrong in the housing market you're stocks will be fine. Well, they they were wrong and. Born from that idea came from the fact that I I love analytics I talked about this before end up and I obviously investor now obviously to too big money. That's something that I truly truly joy. A pleasure of that and. I came up with this idea to use sports as a method of investment. Now, a lot of people say that but I I actually figured out an actual way to really do this emulates what a Lotta, some of the best traders in the world do. So without boring your entire audience I wanNA, Talk Sports. Bore. Your audience I just want to let them know exactly what it is I do I do something pretty i?.

Come and take the game together. and. That was electric. Collins. I imagine even just like. Baseball. I, I think. Part of the appeal is British people are just so funny. They would have like six different announcers. On. Stream I watched entire Patriots game in Spanish. Awesome. They know what they're saying. But I was loving. It didn't matter. Heard it in German too. I've seen some streams, German. That's actually been really good. Because you could like pick a random words, so you kind of know what they're talking about. It's this this time of year for US anyway. On the Patriots. We do a lot of work from home. Anyway you know probably we would have ended the owners meetings but a lot of work from home so in that sense. It's it's it hasn't changed but you know having a full house like you know having the kids home all the time that that's a little different.

"How is your comically slow week going? I could not believe that it was only Tuesday when I woke up this morning. It was like what Tuesday all the days are starting to blend together a little bit, but. Weekends are obviously a little bit more peaceful, but it's doing okay. It's going fine spending a lot time with daughters spending a lot of time working going through draft stuff. I'm getting used to this whole stay at home. Thing. Yeah I'm not. Sure shocks you. I'm just a nervous Nellie I like to be out and about I like to be out my car going out to get A branded coffee of your choosing whether it be yeah, Yeah Dunkin or starbucks, whatever or even honeydew I don't discriminate. But I like getting out I, like driving around, and I've really had to alter that quite a bit I've done it a little bit, but It's hard for me to stay. Still a house just is yeah. No, it's. It's definitely a challenge I usually before this out, go to a grocery store almost every day. Now it's now. It's once a week. I'm staying serious about this for sure I am, too. I am going to my grocery shopping once maybe twice if it's an emergency, but I'm trying to. Stay is. True to the stay at home, philosophies of dealing with covid nineteen, all right onto veteran happier news. Trigger Your Patriots Fan Base Dog. Cromwell if you're the Patriots, then you draft a running back in the first dress. That's what I wrote this morning. I was you know it's? There's not a ton going on sports right now so I've been trying to come up with some more creative ways to to get some content out there and. You know all these mock drafts, and all the rankings that we do all the same positions or at the top of the board. The Patriots with I'm sure that we'll get into him a little bit later so I tried to find a creative way to to write about some of the positions that no one's talking about the Patriots taking early in the first round, and that would probably anger quite a bit of Patriots Fan, so I I wrote about running backs, cornerbacks, and what was. Was the last the position about Oh an art and guards to direct. Yes, that a lot of people would not consider the Patriots to have, but you just never know where the Patriots they might just go out of left field, and and take running back cornerback. Some position that you would not think is a major need at the top of the draft. See you know the way. I view this though they almost always stick to the board in terms of the best athlete available and The Best Athlete has if you're talking top twenty three and the Patriots select for the time being at twenty three. You're talking wide receiver, right? You would think so at this point I mean there's so many talented water series in his draft domestically looking at the list right now and. There's who knows how many wide receivers are gonNA wind up going in the first round..
