Inquiry Slams Security Faults Before Manchester Arena Attack

"An inquiry into the twenty seventeen bombing at the Ariana Grande concert in England is pointing fingers at people other than the person who launched the attack the report finds that there were what it calls serious shortcomings among people who were supposed to be protecting people at Manchester arena the report is being led by retired judge John Saunders and it says venue operators security staff and police each failed in different ways the report says the failures ended up making it possible for the suicide bomber who killed twenty two people to carry out his quote evil intentions the judge says it was distressing to hear that there were multiple opportunities to thwart the bombing but they all fell through the report says while it's likely that the bomb was still would have been able to unleash his explosive attack if some involved with security at the venue had acted differently the loss of life would have been less I'm Oscar wells Gabriel

"Comes with history, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony was really drawn to her. She made me feel like a woman could do anything because she did. She was a Latina like me. She just brings such authority and such honesty to whatever she's playing at the age of 16 years old. She was the sole breadwinner for her family. Little Puerto Rican girl who nobody thought much of at MGM with a contract My introduction Torino Moreno Was on the electric company. I knew nothing about her career prior to that, which is huge. I mean, she's huge in the years before the electric company, But for me, it was the woman who screams. Hey, you guys! At the beginning of the electric company, and and I became a fan because of that. And then later on, as I saw her and other things, you know, but that was like halfway through her career. You know, she had already won the Oscar and she had done all these movies in the fifties and sixties before she even started the electric company and the electric company was kind of her go find herself days. And I'm glad that they focus on that one part of the documentary because, yeah, I've seen West Side story. I mean, I know Marino, Marino and I know she's a big name, but I will always remember her as the character from electric company. This is a nice look at her life is sort of like how the Sparks brothers is a very basic even though it's uniquely put together. It's a very basic biopic of a band. This is a very basic Retrospective of somebody's career with her being interviewed. I mean, it's her still alive, and they're interviewing her, so you get it very much from her perspective. And it shows how Hollywood has changed, and it shows how the the racial component has has affected her throughout the years and how sometimes that was an advantage for her, And sometimes that became Struggle. And and so it's a nice little spotlight. It's a well made movie. It's a well made spotlight on a well known performer that has had a great career and especially if you're a fan. You should enjoy watching this movie. But then again for me One of the people in the Hey, you guys fan base. There's a lot of stuff you gotta walk through before he gets to the electric company stuff, But still, it's a nice look at somebody. I didn't really know the ins and outs of her life. So You know, If you like biopics, you're going to enjoy this one. I'm going to say it kind of rocks. He kind of rocks. That's it for the segment. I need to go to a break. When I come back. I'm going to be talking about Luca and physical and the home cinema roundup featuring Godzilla versus Kong on Blue ray. Hi, You got.

"How do you feel about a a helena. Sell pay per view versus a an occasional surprise. Helena sell to happen on a random paper view when it started. Yeah so w w we has an issue with this right where they take something truly truly special and then they run it into the damn ground. like oscar and rhea ripley my god. That was like yes. I can't wait for that match and now we've seen it six times in two months and it's like okay. I don't wanna see that match anymore. And that's kind of how i feel about the hell in a cell pay per view like i get it like you want how analogy here. It's like what family matters. Decided to focus solely on urkel like it just didn't work like erc was great and small dosing. But when you're making the main character show fucked doesn't work too much. Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing. And that's how. I feel about with helena cell where it doesn't feel anymore you know. It doesn't feel special anymore. We get it every year. now get multiple helmet. We're going to get three hell in a cell matches in three days at feel special to me. And it's the same thing with oscar. Rhea ripley that matches no longer special oscar versus charlotte that matches no longer special. It's time to pump the brakes and give somebody new. I mean the reason why those things are so special is because we used to not see them all the time they used to be dream matches that we would want to see the feuds. It'd be really for blood feuds for nakimora in aj styles. Everybody was like god. I can't wait for that match. And then what are we get. We got that match for four months and it was the same result every time. Aj styles crotch shot and would win or lose the crotch shot so feel about it at this point and and i think you're urkel analogy is perfect and my got just wafting. 'cause i used to watch a lot younger. I watched it comes with my mother. That's essentially what we do. And i think family matters was a friday night sitcom. I could be wrong but i think it was on. Tgi fridays dj friday lineup on abc right. And and i remember we. We used to watch this. And and i'm not gonna let my mother's slightly racist okay. So so there was a part. There was a part of her watching that where she had to suspend her disbelief. That kinda see like you know a suburban middle class african american family doing their thing. But that's a whole other. Yes exactly. But but i do but i mean we watch it and she laughs. She didn't enjoy it. But i do remember.

Victor Noir's Mysterious Erection

"Year more than three million people visit the parish cemetery in paris it's home to hundreds of thousands of tombs. And you can buy a map directing you to all the graves of the cemetery. Most famous residents folks like the singer. Jim morrison and writers like oscar wilde and produced but among that list of celebrities and historical figures is a name that pretty much. No one will recognize but whose tomb attracts a lot of visitors. And i'm very certain kind of visitor with a very certain kind of neat. it's the tomb of victor noir. Victor nor was a journalist in paris in the eighteen hundreds and he didn't publish anything especially remarkable during a short lifetime and he probably would have been forgotten a history if it weren't for the fact that he was shot and killed by prince pierre. Bonaparte the nephew of napoleon that act triggered a wave of protests and led to the commissioning of a statue by the acclaimed. Sculptor jules delauro. But even that isn't really why people are visiting his grave today. The visit for more personal reasons and they aren't there for victor exactly. The statue that covers. Victor noirs grave depicts him laying down as if he had just been shot and that alone is kind of just. But then you notice a couple of other things. I the crotch of this statue has a bulge to it in second. The bulge is very very shiny. Though the statue was largely darkin discolored that particular part has been polished by the hands of countless win over the decades women who are drawn to the statue of victor nawar because rubbing it supposedly confers. Good luck in love and fertility. The full ritual involves kissing his lips rubbing the bulge and dropping a flower in his hat.

"I do these promos every morning with inkers all across the country and i just started asking people in the latter half last week like well. What have you seen. What's your favorite. I was just interested in people around me. And i thought for some reason we at all said that everybody was going to see movies because they were streaming. I don't think i ran across a person who had seen more than one movie of the films. That were oscar-nominated did you guys have that experience. I mean that's that's a great point because same thing. I talked to radio stations across the country every day and most of the hosts were like. I haven't seen any of these movies and the point was they had the most access to these movies. You'd have to do anything you can just button and see them but also that makes them a lot of people that i've talked to. Who did see them said. It made it less special when you put up the effort to go to one of these movies when you see it on the big screen you have all the sound and everything. It feels more like you went to see an oscar movie when you watch it at home. It feels a little more like you. You know binged episode of the parks or something like you know if i was watching this show would well observed if i was watching the show last night and i wanted to see one movie that i saw honored last night. I would wanna go see judas in the black messiah right now I thought what was shown from that. What the reaction for daniel kalou. I would want to get out there right now and see that movie because that just popped off the screen that was just full of energy and excitement also to piggyback off that out of everyone who spoke last night and removing the the actual award winners out of this conversation laura dern how she introduced the supporting male actors was so passionate and it was so respectful. And you could tell that she is a lover of the craft. I thought it was so brilliant and beautiful the way that she introduced and talked about everyone's role so when she got to daniel kaluga and she talked about him. Bringing fred hampton to life on to me. I just wanna say thank you because with your extraordinary commitment and your endless research you did. In fact beautifully. Get within the man. And i have been listening to you. Speak of your inspiration in denzel washington's performance and malcolm x. And just to say how grateful we are the inspiration you gave us with not only the role the words you shared and the reminder. You can't murder freedom thank you. I was thinking this was my favorite film all season. Maybe i should watch it again. Based off the strength of what. Laura dern just said it just felt like such Such a powerful moment. I think when she gave it this incredible and gave his performance specifically the endorsement that she did. I thought that was really beautiful. And for that. I was okay with not seeing the thump clips and you know if there was any justification needed for the importance of the live in person show the acceptance speeches that we saw in the supporting categories justified. That decision the energy that people looking at the person the award gave to that moment gave us to really phenomenal speeches with unexpected turns and memorable phrases and that was a lot of fun to watch watching and saying young. Eun and brad pitt. That moment for someone who hasn't seen monari may inspire them to say. I need to see this lady. Who is this. i love her candor. Pig finally nice to meet you. Will you impulsive spill to absolutely because in the movie. She is such a spitfire of a character. And it's such a great thing and then you see her acceptance speech and you go. There's this is maybe subverting expectations. I think some people might have had of the movie and it's great to watch with something like that. And i think the speeches were the best advertisement for a lot of those films for monari also a film that last time we talked about. I didn't think necessarily belonged in some the categories with another round in thomas venture. His speech i think was the best advertisement for why you should go see that movie. Not only that. But what what what was behind it the personal aspects in the loss and everything that fueled it and that he felt touched and move that movie. You watch his speech and you go. Oh i want to see what the magic was. There that led to this film four days into shooting the impossible. Heavens an accident on a highway to my daughter way. so when looking into cell phone and We miss her. i love her. And jason said it perfectly. It's like if if that had been at the dolby theatre on a normal. The music would have been playing. He would have been rushing. You know it would have been a kind of crab moment because they would have been trying to get him off the stage and so the fact that he got to tell that story just the way he wanted to and you knew something big was coming and something mementos was coming as he spoke. That was really powerful. I thought now if we said crab so it made me think of puss and so very happy to see. Some other notable wins history. Being made pippa erlich james reid accepted best documentary for my octopus teacher And i don't mean that. I just also loved that film but i think we're seeing between daniel and The documentary of my octopus teacher nomad land. Some of these. We kind of knew right. I mean the ones that came up and it wasn't just a night of surprises. I was surprised that i will say i was surprised. I mean in a in a weird way. Octopus teacher was the audience picture moment of the night. Like if i looked at that category i would say best. Film is collective best character is fox rich in time and so i would have voted for time but that was an audience picture like if there had been a movie like that in best picture the whole thing would have been thrown up in the air because that was an audience picture. And may i say. A lot of people say bad Octopus teacher twitter is the best. The best i the whole round of people saying. They didn't think the octopus hell. And then people going shout out to all those octopus teachers working on zoom all this and it was phenomenal so kelly we did see the hair and makeup history so we anticipated and hoped for but it came true and the oscar goes to my rainey's black president. I want to say thank you to our ancestors who put the work in where denied but never gave up. And i also stand. Here's jamir break. This glass ceiling was so much excitement for the future. Now those beautiful. And i loved her speech hearing about her her the journey to northwestern university and not being able to live on campus or was it. Her father thinks she was talking about. And and that was relatable. I think to a lot of people. I i was imagining everyone at home. Kind of nodding their heads and understanding and agreement so that felt really nice to see her and to both of them win And jason can can. We just do. It is number thirteen. Going to be the one for diane warren. Because she's gotta get nominated again. We do you think she just goes and starts writing immediately like.

I've thought it was so brilliant and beautiful the way that she introduced and talked about everyone's role so when she got to daniel kaluga and she talked about him. Bringing fred hampton to life.

"Oscars. How are you feeling plausibly. Live somewhat alive. You know whenever oscar the weekend is over your voices like an octave. Lower your ed. You're just trying to remember how the nouns and verbs go together. You're so right. Chris conley. I normally don't sound the sexy. But after the i need some hot tea and a shot of whiskey. Well after this or during you can so let me start. Let's do it. Jason did the producers. Pull it off yes. We had an oscar show that they put together so they pulled it off in that sense and under difficult circumstances of course with the pandemic and everything and also steven soderbergh coming in and really wanting to put his stamp on it and he did Whether that was good or bad it depends on. That's the eye of the beholder but they he made it look more like a movie. The frame rate that he brought in made it look more cinematic and they made a lot of changes. One thing that i really did like was that they gave more room for the speeches to breathe. They cut out a lot of the film clips which i thought that kinda hurt to lose a lot of those to make room for that. They cut out a lot of the bits they cut out. prerecorded stuff and gave room for those speeches. And the speeches are what i think people are gonna remember from oscars the ninety third oscars but on the other side. They made choices like changing the order in the best picture. Best actor thing which didn't end up working in gave a very anti-climactic ending And the the opening.

Even though I gave our producers personal phone number which she gave me. Just so you know in the future Ron numbers that have five five five in them are I'm usually fictional will keep that mind but Leeza. Gibbons are not. We are going to pretend. It's the Academy Awards and you're going to help me get the job of hosting the red carpet coverage. Okay fine, whatever I just feel like the usually get younger people to do that now. Like Ryan, seacrest or Mario Lopez. What did I tell you you you shut your mouth. You shut your mouth right now about Mario Lopez. That's a friend. I didn't say anything bad about how I don't, but I don't WanNa. be in competition with Mario Lopez. I happen to know he's not going to be available to host the Oscars pre show next year. That's why I'm even considering doing this in the first place. How do you know Mario Lopez enjoying it because friends Talk Carolina. Also. We recently went on a Whitewater rafting trip together and I think he's going to be laid up for a while. Oh my God does something happen Mario Lopez was he injured nothing track. No, it's nothing. I was supposed to be rowing, but I got hungry and I reached into my lunch sack for Venison Jerky I swear. I only put the or down for like three minutes tops anyway Mario Lopez going to be fine America. Nothing, a full body cast and six months of intense rehabilitation won't fix, so get well. Soon Mario. We! Love Your Buddy Ryan. Did you intentionally causal? Whitewater rafting accident with Mario Lopez so that you could get a chance to possibly host the red carpet pre show the Oscars next year. No in Oh spells. No, I can't believe you'd even make that accusation. That is so sick Carolina. You have a sick mind. And with that, let's go to our three sixty cam, so he can get a look at all the great fashion that I run. If you seriously want to do this, that was a terrible say. Who are you wearing tonight, Carolina it appears you've just dressed in sweatpants. T shirt from what does that crank Yankers? That's a funny show. Yeah, but this is the Oscars. My God you look like trash. Okay I now. Just being bitchy like the late great. Joan rivers recipes. If you're just going to be insulting, I can lico stay. You can submit this tape. The red carpet hosting gig is always a two hander. And if you could just died Leeza Gibbons, that'd be great, I'll do my best buy I'd. I didn't come unprepared for this since there's no way for us to know what boring films are going to be the big winners next year because they haven't come out yet. I went and pulled some information from the Sixtieth Academy Awards, which happened in nineteen, Eighty, eight, hundred, eighty eight. Why don't we just do last year's Oscars? So they have a more fresh take on your hosting ability. We'll if I'm being honest. I didn't see any of the movies from last year. Hey! The one that won best picture had subtitled. So you know right? That's an automatic. No from you. They make them too small. They make them to small. When I'm on a teleprompter. They used three hundred point type. Also there was another matter of me. No longer being sent screeners because of a misunderstanding with the union was the misunderstandings really silly I had this neighbor who I swore was stealing packages from in front of my house. Late One night I whipped a dvd of something called uncut Jim Straight through his bedroom window. Shattered the glass. Scared, the Bejesus out of him, that is just awful. That's destruction of property. Someone could have really gotten hurt Mario Lopez on their ravel joke ended up on me because my neighbor took it and made a bunch of copies, and started selling them out of the trunk of his car and that's. Why I don't get screeners anymore to be fair, uncut gems was a really great movie. Haven't seen it because it landed on the floor of my neighbors bedroom, but from what I'm hearing. The sand man was robbed anyway. Can we just go over this one thousand, nine, hundred eight Academy Awards, stuff prepared sure whatever you WanNa. Do they okay now? ACT Like share is walking down the red carpet. Hey, hey, leeza gibbons. Shared nominated tonight for.

Seventeen that's when last night's Oscars faulk in started started Oscar. Thank you thank you probably. I got into to the red carpet even half hour before I love it obviously trying to get best song for twenty twenty cat go award just performing singing what I see. Oh God I sing it as I call it. WHO's so they do? The you know the red carpet stuff off and Ryan seacrest is the dork interviewer. He's a he's a puppet right like there is a hand up by. He'll talk to people that have facial work done also and it's like Oh look at this guy looking like a robot look at this guy looking like a robot and then I look at Ryan seacrest. Mc He's seeming more human though Moss Lad he's the robot you know here's born a robot and I didn't know his vanilla stupidity required cue cards. I'll put this up in. Show notes the Cue Card Guy came on screen by accident those questions. He asks like literally they say. These awards are long. Did you bring a snack. That is on a cue card. What are you excited to be here? Tonight is on a giant cue card with different colors as if he needs to know what we're to accentuate tonight we'll have have Like red means pretend like you're improving. Bright Yellow means. Start acting disgusted and then finish the sentence. You're I mean you know. Part part of me is like I never have that job because I don't know who I'm talking to in I'd need like a heads up like hey so and so's coming mcadoo I know so and so they're on every. TV show short put a name put. Maybe put what they do. We do have a snack in your pocket. You think Shirley's there on each snacks. An accident pockets. Do you think that the the people that are coming up to get interviewed by Ryan seacrest are seeing this yes. I didn't think of that where it's like. He's about to ask me five a snack. I saw I also saw I mean why have to have a snack. Are you asking somebody else if there was because that one. Are you saying I get angrier green because I do but I don't know how you know that these quote reporters are the worst. I did see like a couple minutes of the after the Oscars you know people leave and you made it. I'll tell you why cow I made it but anyway I saw part of that in this guy goes and let me ask. That was a long Oscar. So wasn't it You know whoever I'm interviewing now out. And she goes. Yeah it wasn't he goes okay and hold on a second IRA car beep and we're gonNA take that again. I'll I saw that live in. He goes and then. Here's some background. Okay in five four three two. Hello and here I am with it was all I was wanting to get all of course I watch it. It's fantastic. I think I saw Ryan seacrest in commercial. There's a American idol commercial during the Oscars interesting. 'cause I tried to watch the Oscars with keys and we'll get to that later but I noticed that everybody who has a job in the Oscars rose also on the commercials through the Oscar. Yes and I'm like. Oh my God now of course course we all know this. This is just a bunch of commercials it's commercials for the movies. Obviously but it's also commercials for the actors in the commercials it's also commercials Marshal's for upcoming movie shit. It's just one big. What are you watching necks? 'CAUSE here's how we're going to influence you do get irrationally. Angry Ryan seacrest stupid like I just said something deep. Oh you were watching TV. Yes yes well. It's a bus full of American idol. People Lip synching to they obviously recorded tiny dancer the studio and they play the whole song. It's a long song right So they sing it all benefit cuts to the bus driver and it's Ryan seacrest. I'm like yeah you host. Then they show Ryan seacrest and the River Mirror and Ryan winks at us and I lose my shit. I'm like what are you waking at. Its you as soon as they showed you. I go kgo eight you the from the show and then winks like well. That's where you would be the show. What's the what's the joke I think isn't it? Isn't it funny that the most popular shows are still operating in like seventies eighties. TV like isn't this crazy right. It's like Sitcom kind of jokes. Like I'm I'm self deprecating but not too much family show. Is The wink. Like I would never drive a vehicle in my life. What's the wing let alone be on a bus in my face? I don't ride the bus. I think it was more like heard them singing. I'm in charge of that right right. I made them. Yeah I give them the microphone. NCA- phone it was the host Louis Oscars of course ever since. Kevin Hart ruined everything. With this homophobia the Oscars don't WanNa mess around with a host wage. I believe is is one of the biggest pussy moves ever. It's it's a trick. Yeah because people are gonNA come out and say hi. We wouldn't know how to handle if they started giving out awards we gotta we gotta be coaxed. I into it right you warm it up. "It's really really important. It's storytelling did you see a difference. In the American coverage in the British coverage for example in in the way they portray or perhaps because they're a little bit more outside. Well okay on on the ground in L. A. The coverage is very different It's a lot more locally informed and you get a lot more of the politics of this in Britain you get a lot more of the critical side and also a little bit of the gossip. That's another thing that's very important. I say politics I do mean gossip on their level in Britain. You will get more of an esoteric more critical more about an informed view in La. It's an industry town Hollywood. It's all about who's GonNa going to win. And how is that going to enable their future. Karen tell us about your Oscar scheduled to preserve. COURSE YOU WATCH I. I've seen a few Oscars view than I mean. That's the night for you. Don't sleep basically it's like a when there's an election in the US or something important because you're in the UK. We have to tell listeners if ends about five thirty in the morning okay. Yes every every Oscar that that I've spent in in Britain it's been quite a few you stay up all night and you watch moment by moment because you can't of course course get the list of the winners the next day but it is how it happens. How the production is because again as I said it's industry town? So how is the production action going. How's the host Chris host this year? Who is presenting? What are they going to say? Did they repeat any any speeches from from the Golden Globes and it's an all night thing and it's it's it's wonderful. It's like waiting for Santa Claus in a way. It's a huge gift all night long. And it's worth staying up with. Of course you feel terrible the next day but it doesn't matter because you're excited sided usually. I'm very elated about the winners. Because this is important for filmmakers it's important for designers and actors if you nominated needed really wants your nominated that's kind of the best place to be because a winner. You've you've won and that's kind of. It's almost a poison chalice. Sometimes because what are you going to do next. That's a very good point and let let's talk about the film's itself this year. Do you have favorites or do because you know I think the acting categories I I mean we kind of know who's going to win right. I mean it's been quite established but I don't know do you do disagree with me. Yeah I think it is pretty sewn-up granted. I've noticed that. There was one year where I stayed in Britain for most of the season and then I flew over and did the Oscars over in La and what people we're talking about with very very different. And that's why I think it's so important not so much online but what gets into print they have to be a little bit more careful what gets into print I think You can't change it once. It's there but this year I think it's going to follow very closely to the baptist. I don't know about parasite how much that's the one thing I don't don't know how much love parasites getting over in La. I know here. It's pretty huge. But the variables I mean I would have loved Cynthia Revo to have to win in the best actress nomination. Best female actor. I think we're saying now but she actually deserved it for previous films. But this it's almost like the true grit thing you know. This happens all the time. This happens with John Wayne and he gets awarded for the next film when they realize that they've made a mistake. In fact I I've pitched over and over again again. A television show called. Give it back. which is where we look historically and see? That wasn't the best film of that year. That was that's an amazing chosen. And what's the best thing to drink. Watching the Oscars the best thing watching the Oscars of courses champagne unless you're rooting for the The British contingent and then it's English sparkling and I would suggest you choose from Hampshire because they're ten beautiful vineyards there. There was carrying Crisanto. Vich there if you to hear me and Karen talking about the Oscars results June into the globalist live on Monday the ten for February at seven. Am London time. That's twenty three hundred. La Time and finally on the show. I like to think that I have a pretty decent sense of Who Be picking up the statuettes Sunday night but our next guest well really should know best Benzon mors job is to predict award shows like the Oscars using maths? His latest book Oscar metrics the math behind the biggest night in Hollywood is a delight full of stats to delight fuel nerds and lay movie watchers alike. Ben Began by telling me why the best editing Kathy is. The best predictor of the best picture winner. That's right in terms of which nomination you get if you're a best-picture contender best film. Editing is actually the single most important I love all of the Oscar coverage out there some of it like mine is mathematical apparatus. Others is more based on an industry. Feel and I think it all has its place is all very fun but my lane. My Gimmick has always been to use hard data. Dan Statistics to try to the uncover hidden truths about the academy to win. The idea for the book came out that started after graduating college. In two thousand fifteen. I thought aww fun to maybe get to tell Oscar stories using data in a bit more than two hundred eighty characters at a time which I was confined to on twitter and so my goal with this book was not to write a statistics textbook but instead to write a series of interesting stories interesting findings about the Oscars that any movie Fanconi thank enjoy but have those findings and stories be influenced by the math in front of me. Do you have a favorite cathy. Green away for some reason. I quite enjoy best actress. You know. I think it's quite interesting and especially because the Oscars are so male-dominated so even some of the nominations are from films that are sometimes sometimes not on best picture but you have one for example. It's a great question if I had to name one it would actually be best original screenplay so for me. I've sometimes joked with friends. I get so focused on a plot when I watch movies that if I were an Oscar voter my votes for best picture and best original screenplay would be the same in most years not every sometimes there is something about some movie that it's so well produced or directed or acted something that's outside of the screenplay they can vaulted in the first place for me. Because I just love a good story. That's the category that care about almost as much as best picture. Well I think he's a very good categories whereas all best original screenplay tell me I mean most of the time I presume you very right But do you. Do you feel surprised. Perhaps recently about some of your choices that went completely against your math of who is going to win and if you can name a few examples absolutely so ultimately what math is doing it's figuring out the probability that every nominee wins and these probabilities are never zero percent. One hundred percent sometimes life the thing with the lower probability ability wins. It's what we call them upset. It's what makes the Oscars So a really. Classic example of this in recent years was the best picture race between Lala Land and Moonlight Lowland Lowland as you may recall one everything that year. One the baptism and the producers guild the directors guild in the screen actors and it seemed like a surefire bet to go Juan and win best picture but it wasn't sure fire it wasn't one hundred percent and moonlight came from behind and pulled off the upset and it made for one of the most exciting moments in Oscar history even independent of the envelope. The ASCA what about this year. Are you feeling confident about your choices can never be too confident certain categories. I feel I feel competent in the categories. Where all of the precursors lineup so all four acting categories really fall into that group this year or best international feature the new name Foreign Language Bill Pretty much? Everything from across the globe is parity so categories. Like that yes I I feel a fairly confident best cinematography. Nineteen seventeen is another one. Where all precursors lineup but for the majority who have no I would not say I'm competent in many categories? The front runner is actually below fifty percent to win. Meaning it's more likely to front runner loses than wins. We don't know which of this place nominees are going to pull off the upset. And Ben you just released this incredible book about the Oscars Lot of Trivia Finke. I'm sure a lot of listeners would enjoy that. What about throw the year? Do you do that with other entertainment events or are you just kind of Diaz Command. I do in terms of predictions I predict to award shows which are the Oscar's as well as the tonys for Broadway and then I also tweet out plenty of Trivia facts for many many other award shows whether the Emmys the grammys or all of the the film award the lead up to the Oscars say it's a year round hobby but definitely one that kicks into high gear around Oscar season. There was Ben's ause Moore author of Oscar Matrix tricks. The book.

"Like my father. You're also like my mother bad things about all of these people but mostly of other. It'll be interesting to see during the Oscar. TV Show exactly how Adam driver reacts when they play a clip of his best actor nominated performance because he hates seeing or hearing himself on screen so much that a few months ago he walked out on Terry Gross in the middle of an interview for fresh air when she played a clip of him which surprised me because when I talked to him in two thousand thirteen he was indulgent as we watched one scenes from the TV show girls. I did ask him why it made him so uncomfortable. I mean lots of reasons I just forgot why look like to was reminded in my God. That's what you have to go through that But mostly because I feel like If he was gonNA continue if it was going to kind of go on that You know I came from a theater background or you. Don't get to look at the end result or what what is actually being a Brosseau. You just have to do your homework than As much as you can then show up on the day and be open to something being different or not knowing the answer and I think think in things that I've watched in the past one I would just obsessed about them for months and drive myself crazy after you saw your work of things that I wanted to fix and change your or do over again in an obviously you can't and and same thing with the people around me. I just drive them nuts with like ask him quite so we would just couldn't wouldn't it be allow you to like. Oh next time and I won't do that or get better the next time. I don't think it's necessarily a good idea. Just kind of seems to be what I think. I have a natural tendency to try to make things perfect or better looking or Change it for the sake of changing at arbitrary Changing making it look better in the things that I'm interested in an watching in film theatre and television role is the imperfect or the ugly part of it. I just know it myself. Especially while we're shooting I have no interest to see what is coming across I on the show. I asked guests a lot about their their kind of Aha moments. As young people the thing they saw experienced experienced a rat or whatever that made them pursue whatever creative field there in. I read that the moment you realize you wanted to be an actor wasn't in a theater or watching. TV But during basic training in the marine wasn't basic training we were was in the fleet Our Tiller was firing. White Phosphorus over a Motorman as a training exercise. Yeah it was a trade. Yeah and Got Corn is wrong and they they fired on us as opposed to the target so It was really windy and coupled with the fact that all of us were running away from it all away from it because if it touched you would burn you in. Yeah and that was kind of my first experience with Oh like Even though I'm young young could die and the two things that I wanted to do was I wanted to smoke and Be An actor that didn't have any relation to each other. Never really smoked cigarettes. I WanNa let's see what really WanNa see what that is like killed. Let me kill myself. Yeah it seemed like a good idea at the time and then you've got injured right and and didn't stay in the marine. No yeah I broke my sternum and had that not happened and had the marines. WORKED OUT Would you have ended up where you are for now. Do you think. I don't know it's hard to say the I mean. I didn't WANNA go like being a civilian again and all kind of getting my civilian privileges. It was like a hard thing to swallow especially when they were kind of overseas doing their job. And I wasn't like I was here in New York at acting. School like that was kind of a really difficult transition and I would say I still regret not being able to go go through the fall enlistment. Yeah well with my with that specific group of people. I mean like there's no what it's all about at that. Yeah Yeah Yeah there's no like You kind of joined for whatever reasons and all kind of had reasons but as soon as you kind of get in with that group of guys you kind of forget about the outside. I remember very specific moment of being a Chow Hall and watching President Bush than being like our military's in a hi State of alarm Mike Really. We're on red alert. You know. I'm here eating eggs right now. and thinking about getting a second helping of potatoes like where the the outside world seems something completely disconnected and we wanted to go and do our jobs with this group of guys and the idea of not being with them through. That is like there's there's no way to describe. And where did they deploy to They went over. They did a WESTPAC can of Iraq and Afghanistan. And now that you're an actor in and you're on in casts and does it. Is it hard for you not to feel as cast get together and feel all part of this group and like you don't know what you're talking about I. It was in the Marines with this unit that I felt that was feeling close to people. I think when I got out I had a really strong sense of entitlement about being in the military and I cannot and adjusting into civilian life in getting really aggressive with civilians about like. What are you complaining about getting in line for a lot But since I don't really I think that's I've been fortunate enough to find acting to be able to find the language to express that so I I feel like I haven't gotten started to calm down a little bit and no longer to judging civilians millions will there's also right there's also a strong connection between the military. I think in theater acting and just the you know in that band of brothers kind of way. Yeah Yeah But oh yeah that there's You know you're trying to accomplish a mission that's greater than yourself. It's it's not really about you. You have to know your role within a team you know you have to be intimate with people in a short amount of time and the stakes are really high. The pressure is really high. Obviously life or death circumstances. Don't really compare it to you. Know bad crafty but still the sentiment of trying to accomplish something. That's is not about one specific person and in putting your trust with another people in the discipline. Self maintenance applies. Well Adam driver. It has been a pleasure meeting. Thanks for having me. Adamant drivers nominated for best actor for his role in mirrored story coming up next the Oscars. That's what we came to. You never won an Oscar and it's a damn shame he's the most I enduring star in Hollywood recognized all over the world immortalized in gold. But this Guy Oscar well. He was apparently great friends with John. Wayne mm-hmm he's supposedly taught. Rudolph Valentino detangle. He's a bit like a forest gump. The real man behind the statue. That's next on studio three sixty two years ago. I was looking on the Internet and I saw these intriguing images that looked like a sci-fi set and eight people on red jumpsuits in front of this glass pyramid and was shocked to learn that this wasn't a science fiction movie it was real and I found out that so many of these people were still alive if I was determined to tell their story. Matt Wolf is the Director of the documentary spaceship Earth which premiered at Sundance Twenty twenty spaceship Earth is about in one thousand nine hundred one in science experiment. We're eight biospheres. went to live sealed inside an enormous terrarium in the Arizona. Desert with a miniature replica of Earth's ecosystem they called it biosphere. You're too it's an inspiring story about what small groups of people can achieve when they put their minds together towards a common goal and that idea extends to how Matt worked with his own small team. Making film is really about problem solving and putting together a puzzle and it takes all sorts of creative minds to do that. It's something he could only achieve with the help pox so much of the collaborative work I do is remote this a lot of communication. I mean I'm going back and forth with my collaborators all day constantly so I'm reviewing music composer or looking at new motion graphics. Somebody's uploading new Q.. Sheet for me to look at and to see the latest creative assets that have been completed we were this small group that brought together are diverse skills and interests and our goal is to tell this story that's been mostly overlooked and forgotten jocks helps filmmakers makers and their teams make their best work.
