Naveed Afghan, participated in several national competitions and had run up position and the adolescence and youth national championship in Iran. Few years back, and was he taking part in anti government protests in 2018? So there have been several rounds of protests over the past 2 2.5 years in Iran. The protest that Naveed was prosecuted for took place in summer of 2018 in several cities, including in Shiraz, where he lived. So how did he come to be accused of stabbing to death? His security guards and so, according to documents Reviewed on DH news articles have been published about the case on the evening off one of the days that the protest was ongoing. Mr Torre Common who initially was reported as a security officer, but later was introduced as just an employee off the water Waste management company was stabbed to death close to his home. I think that the rush nature off this sentence because Iranian authorities disregarded the procedural rules that they need to abide by and when executing someone shows that it had a political motive behind it, And I would say it's probably an attempt to defy the international and domestic outcry against the death penalty. So was there a campaign inside Iran to have him sped? Since July of this year, there has been an ongoing campaign. Well Japan has plunged a lot of money and prestige and human capital into making the Games happen if we think back to when they were originally bidding on the Olympics, they said that the entire escapade would cost seven point three billion dollars, but by the time this summer rolled around, they had spent some twenty eight billion dollars, according to an audit by the Japanese government, and so that's four times what they had originally planned postponing means adding anywhere from two to six billion dollars. Those are the best guesses that we have now. So what's at stake for Japan is they've already spent way more money than they expected and now they might not even get the Olympics to actually

And in fact, Japan is working around the clock to try to figure out how to keep their games. Despite a global pandemic, it's part of a long story for decades. Just like their athletes. Countries have competed fiercely to host the Games despite mounting evidence that they usually represent a significant financial loss, and that made us ask why, if not money, what's the games offer that so special and worth so much effort I'm Gabrielle Sierra and this is why it matters today, the Olympics soft power and the deep running politics of the World Games. "The US Olympic Committee was broke and we made hundreds of millions of dollars. It's the infrastructure and people do things like build a new railway to so cheap. Well, that's not like the Olympics that was a fifty billion or whatever dollar railway that people put into the Olympics as that's inherent cost of boondoggle, and you're getting your boondoggles in early now so that they can't better than that. We delayed twenty twenty eight let periscope I and twenty twenty four and we negotiated one hundred sixty million dollars up front so sixteen million dollars a year has been going into doubling the number of kids, who get swim classes, and African American Latino kids over half of them, don't know how to swim, and it's the second leading accidental killer of kids under twelve. So we, we are putting into public good now and main reasons why can get away with it and other places are right to avoid, it is not building Olympic village. We're using UCLA. So we're just renting those rooms were we've got all the infrastructure, the most expensive stadium in human history has been built without public subsidy in Inglewood here for the Rams and the chargers we're gonna use that we have the call a Siham. We have the staple center. So we're just renting the incredible sports facilities. We already have here we have velodrome, we've got tennis court. So most other cities are smart to not bid, but we hope to get the Olympics to kind of chill out, on needing to build so many new things. So the moral of the story is the Olympics should only be held in Los Angeles. One person. I want to ask, and we asked this to a lot of substantial people, what's something that you believed for a long time to be true until you found out that you were wrong. Well, I mentioned it already. I think that was one of those Democrats always thought you can never lower taxes, and I think that I've seen in practice that businesses do make their decisions based on what we're taxes are. That's definitely one. I think the other thing I used to dismiss people's fears, and that let's say in a town hall meeting where people don't want a homeless shelter in their neighborhood, that it was okay to just say you're wrong, or somebody's racist about something this that, and the other, and I realized over time you have to kind of. Understand people's fears that they usually come from a real place. And until you understand that you can't transform. The mayor told us a lot of things about Los Angeles. Any facts, we need to be concerned with. So a couple of things that are interesting. He was rated one of the top five most dateable mayors in America. Despite the fact that he's married to the incredible Amy wake you, I was going to say I'm not dateable at all. I did want to say one thing about diversity, which was interesting. There is a large study that just came out that ranks LA itself, not greater Los Angeles. As the sixty third most diversity in terms of racial, and ethnic. Diversity moves up to the eight most diverse city when you take into account income education, language, industry class age religion cetera. The most interesting thing I think you talked about was how hometown buffets also have diversity. You'll be interested to know that in Canada. Some buffets offer jellied moose knows in Japan, you can get tuna eyeballs, but most impressive was a man in Springfield, Massachusetts who ate all the diversity and was kicked out of a buffet after spending more than seven hours, onsite eating more than fifty pounds of food. God. So it is possible to get all the diversity. Thank you, make them on. And thanks specially to mayor Erica, said he of Los angel-. Our next guest is a size. Malla gist to Caltech, and she's a leading thirty on earthquake risk. Would you. Please welcome. Lucie jones. Okay, lucy. It was so interesting to me that people clapped earthquakes. So tell us something, we don't know about our quakes start there. Most people think of California's a place with a lot of earthquakes. The reality is, we don't have enough. Now, maybe that's only something small just just going to say, but we can look at the geology, and see how many we should have, and especially the last couple of decades. Ben particularly quiet we call it earthquake drought..

And those people are Alexi Pappas, Nick Kroll and Jeremy teicher now Olympic dreams, you probably haven't heard of. But I am happy to evangelize for it. I saw a little while ago. And it premiered here it's off by south west down in Austin. And it is really like a small miracle movie. I'm sure it's going to get distribution soon. And you guys will be able to see it. But I thought that the story of the making of the movie was so cool that we would be able to share it with you. Now Alexi is a Olympic athlete. So she is actually out there. She ran in two thousand sixteen Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and she and her husband, Jeremy are filmmakers as well. Jeremy's a director and really accomplished filmmaker on every level because he is essentially on this film. Mm-hmm. Is his own crew. And here's what they did. They got in with the Olympic Committee who asked them to be artists in residence, and they went and made a romantic comedy in pian Chang during the Olympics. And it was really it's a really incredible accomplishment. Basic, the basic story set up is that Alexi plays a woman in Penelope who's competing as a cross country. Skier she competes early in the game. So she has a lot of free time afterwards. She's kind of feeling a little bit of an emptiness after competition, and she meets a volunteer dentist at the games. Played by Nick Kroll, and they kind of have this this worlwide end friendship slash romance throughout the the movie and every scene takes place in some part of the Olympic experience. Whether it's the opening ceremonies that dining hall at the Olympic village in the dorms in and around peon Chang going to the pennant behind the scenes of these ethnic events. They're shooting in a lot of interiors because that's easy to control you DC to light you can kind of get things in and out. But sometimes it doesn't feel of the world. This movie is kind of remarkable because it feels both very of the world, you get to see all these incredible locations, and you know, they're running around in parking lots and in like food courts, and then they're like at a karaoke bar or a nightclub. But then it also is a world basically like ninety nine point nine nine nine nine percent of us will never get a chance to see. We will not be Olympic athletes. We don't know what it's like to train all your life to do something. So incredible..

"Terms and conditions apply. Now, we can get back to the show. I'm curious if you've done work where you know, it's actually like within a specific organization that, you know, it's not necessarily an entrepreneur trying to network, but perhaps it's like within a specific company of, you know, bringing people within that little community together. I'm curious if there's been any kind of work that you've done around that. This past summer in about three month span I was hired to speak to Lincoln and bell media, which is like a broadcast media platform in Canada. And then the Olympic Committee so miserable. Olympics like for Canada the Olympics here. So the Canadian Olympic committee. So I mean team Russia doesn't know anything about. Yeah. Maybe someday. So these are all large companies unique personalities and mutually exclusive from each other. And in each of them, I was basically just talking about appreciation recognition giving thanks at organizational level because me running my own business hitting the road a lot like right mound. Thank you cards. That's impactful, but highly different world from one of these companies in what's exciting for me is that I'm going into these massive companies. And I'm speaking people every time in my head. I'm like this is kinda like, I'm literally. Yes. Vote handwritten thank-you cards and every time even at fireside every time I get so my head. I'm like, I should have sleepy telling him something that's like powerful impactful and innovative because simple. Simple, basic, and so. It seems like it could be something that's very surface level. I could I can understand where you would maybe getting your head and like second gusts that and be like this is a big company. This is linked in. And I'm talking about. Thank you. Right. Yeah. Some literally coming in with these like boxes of blank, thank you cards. I'm heading pens and already like they're sitting there with their ipads with their cell phones. Or like, you know, getting thrown because go work to do. And I'm like you go to go. I mean, you experience it a fire set you walked in you got a blank card. You've got a panel. Everyone's like, okay. Yeah. Sure. I don't know what I'm gonna do it. This. But but there's some mistake to like. All right. I'm kind of listening in every time I speak to these companies. I'm reminded at the end like, oh, this this was the powerful impactful innovative thing because everyone's so focused on tech everyone so focused on scaling everyone so focused on speed in fishy in how can we just like copy paste? So you come in with this seventeen hundreds method of feather Panin piece of paper. Yeah. And it's so it in itself is innovative because innovation is just something different. And now the things that are old are now becoming rare which therefore become new, and I love it. Because. All it is asking people to pause and do a thing that they likely have done which is for nothing related to money for nothing related to job description for nothing related to deadlines. Think of someone that's important to you and tell them when they don't expect it, and it shakes people up like people, they get stressed state might like it might cry. They might get excited might giggle. I have people making live phone calls inside the company like I literally have people come on stage in their phoning like their sister. Their husband their parent their old college roommate in inviting them to just give them a random. Thank you. And it makes people freak out. But they're so excited to do with only I don't know. This is weird. And hit is weird. I save at this is a weird. But but it's important as the powerful stuff. The and these are the things that unfortunately or source, mentally when there's tragedy we do this like if there's a natural disaster, or if there's a sudden death or even a desk just that we knew would come in our family or life. Then people start gushing the appreciation. So I'm just trying to insert that before tragedy. Does what it always does? And one thing I love about it is that we've talked about it in terms of like your personal life. We've talked about it. In terms of being like entrepreneur, we talked about it in terms of organizations, and it really is something that people can do like a cross board..

I've always been kind to them. My teammates were very reluctant to go in front of cameras. Throw me, they're all talk away. I'm good speaker. I'm on the US speakers network anyway for the Olympic Committee. So but me up there. Go ahead. And then they emphasis asked me to go and cover the London Paralympic Games with our wounded because the numbers were jumping up in the win number of wounded athletes that we're and they were being they were active duty wounded members. But they were going to become veterans eventually. And so they asked me to do it. And I just called up media said, hey, can I get some can I get some credentials to go to London. Will yet? Kevin shirt. You're good photographer. We've seen you those you always you always hit your big cameras with you. You're on the team. So you've been contributing us anyway goes photojournalists. Yeah. So you wouldn't understand that he's on menu. However, my my triumph. It ends before. I would really wanna stop traveling was twenty twenty. There is an expected. Twenty to thirty percent of team USA will be our wounded veterans and active duty personnel. The highest numbers that they've ever seen because of the TI amputate. "There have been instances moon when the olympics have been a useful diplomatic tool for example in nineteen 56 1960 in nineteen four than the height of the cold war the international olympic committee required that the two germanys west germany east germany compete as one team obviously it didn't solve the cold war but it is certainly lessen tensions when seoul was assigned the 1988 olympics it was a military dictatorship and there was a tremendous amount of pressure given how democracy was starting to spread around the world what are you going to why are you going to do this you know why are we giving the games two into a dictatorship when there's all these other countries and so pressure came pressure came the military leaders stepped down as 'extraordinary and he became a democracy i have to say i think that you know the olympic movement can be a positive force but we shouldn't have any illusions that the what happened in south korea's going to happen again olympic boycotts began in the 1950s there were two boycotts in nineteen fifty six one to protest the soviet invasion of hungary and one to protest the israeli led occupation of this suez canal so there were two boycotts then there have been others the most famous nineteen seventy six when many african nations at the last minute boycotted the more growl games in 1970s six to protest apart that they objected to.

"The olympic games and that is africa finally though that could be about to change not this meant it but there will be a step to take before that happens hosting the smaller youth olympic games in twenty twenty two the international olympic committee's president says that a mini olympic event will be held on the continent of africa although a specific country has not been selected as yet most of the countries in africa i mean to be perfectly honest don't have the funds available to to host something like that nor the facilities perhaps south africa these are that's about it you have to have a venue to hold the opening ceremonies young you have to have a venue it i would assume that it would be summer olympic games ray would look at you'd have to have a venue big enough to hold track and field events then i don't know that they have anything that resembles that and then you have to have several other sites for basketball end i mean the loss goes on on the other hand if it works out well be great if it were joel that would be great and then they could end up having the regular olympics in africa so they're going to at least try again a dealer shot yes good thing but again they haven't said uh just as yet where they're going to here's the thing chris and i know that you remember this is well during the so she games the long live and it's not like russia is a third world country no but the ability to put some of those venues together even if you have the money to to fund certain things and trying to hurry all those events along the list of things that were screwed up during the socie games was comedic low and then in the rio games brazil yes so and i mean the just the water it's not an easy thing to do the water problems alone and all the sewage that was going into the water and yeah the list of venues that three days after the event was done sat idle in there has been anything their sense just ridiculous you know why i think that's why that's why yet two of the next few olympic games are going to be a places that have already had the olympic games before now that's paris.
