"Dan Solomon. Mr Olympia dot com. He's running the Olympia, which is October 7th through 10th. You guys definitely check it out The great show It will be in Vegas next year at Planet Hollywood, but it's in Orlando this year, so check it out. As I mentioned earlier in the show, I did have my birthday week this week birthday and one thing you always reflect on birthdays. As you age as you get older. You think about number one. You're grateful for another year of life, Of course, specially doing this year with the pandemic and and all those kind of things and people suffering and a lot of mental health and a lot of issues going on. So you're blessed. You have another year of life. And also you want to improve your health and wellness. You want to find ways to a backwards You want to be that Benjamin button vibes. You want to go back back in time? Back to the future like Marty McFly, But and so what I always look at is I look at how can I improve my health and wellness? And I'm sure that knowledge with all of you who are trying to slow the aging process, reverse the aging process and really improve the quality of life quality of life is really important. It's not just about living longer. But living healthier being better. Better for family better for your kids. Better for your friends. Better for your business. Whatever it is, If your health is not right, nothing will be right. I always say health is the true wealth. That's the wealth because money will come and go. But your health you only have one body and you can have several bank accounts, but you only have one body. And, uh, you know, I'm not going to say that. You know you you if you work on your body You can improve every area of your life as Dan mentioned earlier in the show that literally if health and wellness is there, you can achieve greatness in every area. So I want to leave with you guys. Uh, some tips my anti aging tips how to age well, how to improve health and wellness. And all really starts with genetics. Part of it, And I think that if you understand your jeans and if you understand genetics by doing tests, for example, for a gene called T E. R C Turk Turk is a gene that looks at telomeres. Telomeres are structures at the end of chromosomes. That as they shorten you advanced age, and so if you can lengthen or keep those telomeres long at the end of your chromosomes, you can actually live longer And so some of the ways to do that is number one to get good sleep number, which we'll talk about in the second number to stress, which is an absolute killer for ages. Stress ages you how many of you guys out there have had a stressful day. And the next day you look aged people said, Wow, you look stressed like your bags on your eyes. Whoever maybe you look, stress and stress does that cortisol is a stress hormone, which is increased when you have stress, and that's why it's really important to meditate. To manage stress. Better to take supplements. Make sure you don't have vitamin mineral deficiencies. Those are all important factors. To lower stress, because stress literally is an advanced age er and a killer literally. So some of the things I recommend if you have sleep problems, because sleep is so important, and we've had actually found studies where if you have a good night's sleep 7 to 9 hours every night, you can actually help increase telomere length over time, So we know that sleep is really important for a lot of different factors. Recovery recuperation. Lack of sleep increases. Appetite increases. Abdominal fat causes all kinds of muscle degradation. And so it's really important to get quality sleep. Some of the things I recommend for quality sleep number one. You gotta sleep at roughly the same time every night. That's to maximize circadian cycle. You have a gene in your body called the clock. Jean Marc Gene really looks.

"Talk dancing with the stars controversy. It's igniting over whether or not olympia j deserves to be contested. She's a daughter of laurie. Lachlan and they've been wrapped up in this whole college admissions scandal. Now we just talked to host tyra banks who said give girl chance. Listen to this. Olivia jade super brave. I think she's super brave to come out. I think she's like i'm tired of people talking about me. It's time for me to tell my story. And i'm going to do it on national television and i'm going to do dancing with the stars. Ought to be right there with her helping her to tell her story. There's just so much tire knows about controlling that narrative also likes underdog to you know what i mean Yeah but she's she's like okay. This girl she's gone through it like we've been talking about it. She has been crucified for all of the things that she and her parents and whoever advise them did and you know i was a teenage. We were all teenagers once and we didn't make the best decisions all the time but we were on some crazy platform all the time. I mean maybe you guys were not all your rate. Also she was influenced by adults. She didn't make these decisions by herself. So errands told this was the thing to do because again they were advised to do that. And i think. And i said this two and a half years ago when we were talking about this this is starting to rival khloe interest with the amount of time. We've spoken about it. But they're from a very affluent area in los angeles. And i think that was part of the culture where every family was like. We're gonna get our kids in college and this is how you do it. Obviously that way of life is not acceptable and doesn't work in which is why the whole system came crashing down because you can't illegally get your kid into school but i don't think that they were necessarily bad people. I think they made bad decisions. Laurie has done her time. Masato has done his time. Is he still in prison. Urged their time like let the girl. The girl is how old twenty two years old not even like. I just feel like at some point. It's like an know even going to one tires like you know. She needs to tell her side of this. It's like what's her side of the story her parents and we're going to get you in to see. This is what you need to do. Do it when you're seventeen years old. Sixteen you listen to your

The Importance of Having A Clear Vision Towards Your Goals

"The end of the day it starts with a clear vision. I didn't make this up. I actually picked up from out of all people. Arnold schwarzenegger arnold schwarzenegger is probably the best example. I can think of when it comes to vision. He says it's very important to have a very clear. Simple vision that you can look at the. You can imagine your head in a second because that's your driving force for him. He had multiple visions so at start. It was becoming mr olympia. Which is the highest title for a bodybuilders. And then he wanted to become an a list actor and then he the fill that vision that he wanted to be the governor of california which is the largest state in the us. And i think the eighth largest Economy by gdp in the world. And i picked this up in his book. Total recall his autobiography And it's really important because there are days that are tough. There are days that are harder than others were. You're required to do things each just don't feel like doing Your might be a little burnt out. You might be a little bit tired and might be dealing with are annoying thing and I often have to go back to the vision and say to myself okay. This is what i'm doing this for. This is why it's worth me going through this slog a little bit because it's one step closer to my vision by doing this. It gets me closer to my vision. And that's how arnold schwarzenegger puts it together like every rep. He did got him. Closer to mr olympia. Every set he did gone closer to that. You know that title.

That's set olympia. Clapping her hands. You've got it now that the bear was feeling more confident. The pair of them made up a dance in the garden gliding across the grass and around the tent in leaps and spins pay. Were having such a wonderful time that they didn't even notice the real time. 'My Body, My Choice': Healthcare Workers Protest State Vaccine Mandate

"High right and choose what I'm gonna do with my body, My body. My choice, the same argument used by pro choice activists adopted by anti vaccine mandate protesters in Pula. I think it should be choice I'm vaccinated. My daughter is not, And I think it should be her choice whether she would like to be vaccinated or not. They are against the governor's vaccine mandate for all healthcare workers. The large crowd gathered at an intersection drawn there by a conservative Christian group on Facebook, the same group that promoted stop the steal protests in Olympia back in January, which coincided with the insurrection at the US Capitol 2.5 hours north in Bellingham, another group protested outside of a hospital over the same vaccine mandate issue. Cairo radios Nicole Jennings reports from Peace Health Saint Joseph Medical Center. The States mandate health workers have until mid October to get the vaccine or say goodbye to their jobs. Bellingham protester Frank says the mandate violates those workers rights and that it's an especially bad idea during a health workers shortage. We need doctors and nurses. We don't eat less of them, especially to be fired. You're taking something they choose not to do that's truly insane. Peace health says the vaccines have proven themselves to be safe and effective and that it's imperative for their caregivers who are medically able to get the

"I've been listening to olympia. Rodriguez album sour and i think we need to talk about her third single off album good for you. Have you guys gotten a chance to listen to it yet. I mean a thousand times. The record has been repeat. Every time i get in my car and turn on the radio seems to be playing yet. Shire jump on tiktok. I don't know how often you guys tiktok. But that's another very commonplace. You might hear that song. Tiktok is currently my social media restriction at this very moment. Okay as in. You're not on tiktok. Usually but i've just needed a break. Yep so i kind of missed the phenomenon okay. Well tiktok aside. I know you've both heard it a bazillion times. I want to queue it up and listen to a little bit of it. Yes please one of my favorite things about this track is that it's almost like it has a split personality between the verse. The chorus the verse is kind of funky kind of slow kind of sinister cathedral. Qassim down really easily found in the only took a couple weeks and then the chorus just explodes into this distorted raging pop punk anthem. Head-spinning totally

"Who is not functioning or is that just the heat emanating from the discourse around the olympia rodrigo album. It is tough to know. I had mentioned on the facebook group. That i wasn't sure if i was gonna come in for a second. Olivia cast twenty twenty one. But you know what the demand is there. The urges there the intrigue is there and the discourse has arrived. Here we are sour is out. We are back lindsay sold. Ads is here lindsey. Hello lindsey reviewed sour for npr. First time on podcast. Olivia horn is here. Hello olivia welcome. Hey thank you. Olivia reviewed the album for pitchfork. We have a lot of takes a lot of inspired takes between mine and lindsay's and olivia's so we are going to. We're gonna get active on this week's episode going deep on the ark of olivia rodrigo. We opened up with deja-vu which is a later. Alavi rodriguez angle after of course driver's license. Which are sure everyone has committed to memory and tattooed on their arm by now lindsay. Let's start with you. Can you talk to me before we even get to sour. Can you talk to me a little bit about the ark of the single rollout the singles roll out. I should say 'cause i feel veers. There's a narrative within that micro arc that says atone before you even get to. The album agree. So you. I think that first of all is interesting about the olivia. Argus is this. Is all pretty much happening this year. In the calendar year of twenty twenty one driver's license comes out at believe january and just conquers the world and everyone's soul and is just one of i think the biggest like out of nowhere sort of breakout hits other not necessarily out of nowhere. We'll get to the hat but really like has this hold on the culture even cross generational which i think is kind of interesting element there at aachen stay. Takes off on tiktok in just becomes like mass. Cultural phenomenon is number one for weeks on the billboard chart and you know like that type of breakthrough has the danger of one hit wonder written all over

"It's time for another installment of sea hunt. It's still alive here on scuba shack radio. This time. we're going back to episode one of season two and it was titled the alcatraz story this episode premiered on january fourth nineteen fifty nine at the time. Alcatraz was still very much an operation as a prison and it did not close until march of nineteen sixty three. The alcatraz story starts off with a scene of several convicts breaking rocks on the cliffs of alcatraz when all of a sudden one of the convex Falls in and then you see him. Swim-down before surfacing when the guards fish him out but wait. There's a mysterious fishing boat. The olympia watching what's happening. The convict circling is arm as if he's signaling fishing boat the scene shifts to the boat and three guys say they need to find mike nelson. Now we're underwater with mike nelson and he's testing flares for company. When all of a sudden an anchor comes crashing down dangerously close to him and an a skin. Diver comes diving down. Mike is really mad. And he's ready to chew him out when he gets to the surface but they get to the surface in all the guys start apologizing and they say they've came a long way to see mike and mike ask them why to bury mitzi no. They introduced themselves as the brand brothers. Larry johnny and frank they claim to be abalone divers and need to to learn how to scuba dive so they can find the abalone. Mike advises them on the law. But they say hey there lotto buying brothers so he agrees to teach larry and johnny how to scuba dive for three hundred dollars. And we're going to start tomorrow morning at eight thirty. But mike tells them any of them goof off. It's over so the next morning they're out diving. Mike says they're easy to teach. He's going over the equipment the safety procedures in the buddy system underwater now. They're in triples doubles and singles tanks. Bit of everything after their first lesson which by the way lasted five hours underwater and they were below sixty feet might tells the brothers no more diving while he heads back to town jeep to get the tanks fill and he gives them a book on scuba diving. Do read larry tells mike okay teach will be good he had. That's not gonna happen. Mike returns to find the boat empty. And there's bubbles in the water. Larry johnny or diving again just franks shows up and mike and frank get into a fight before mike knocks him down gets into his gear and enters the water to retrieve the two brothers before they kill themselves. Mike finds them underwater. And it looks like they're doing something like the dive master gear exchange. Now they take off and mike goes in hot pursuit for some reason. Johnny turns around rips. Mike mask off. Mike has defined it. Put it on and clear it. Just in time to find larry running out of air. Mike grabs larry and buddy breathes with him to the surface now. Mike is really mad. Schools over another five minutes and all their problems would have been over. They'd be dead his advice. Don't play games with the ocean. The brothers gibb tell mike. They were just practicing. What was in the book. Mike gave them. Mike doesn't really believe them but they take off and as the boat depart mike find frank's wallet on the pier. Apparently he lost it. Doing to fight with mike. He's not frank brennan but frank bronson the plot thickens. Wonder if my god is three hundred dollars the scene now shifts to fisherman's warf and mike is getting the low down on the bronson brothers. They haven't been abalone fishermen for years and there's a fourth brother mark now mike looking for their boat but he spots it on often abandoned peer in oakland and decides that he needs to scuba dive out to see what's up. The board is empty. But before mike can get on board the three bronze brothers show up his only option. Hide under the boat when the engine starts. He grabbed a dangling. Bow-line and hitches a ride. They're up to no good. The pressure is tremendous as he hangs on an fears of the blades of the prop behind them. But the boat finally slows then stops. And larry johnny jump in on scuba and have an extra set a gear. What's going on. Mike surfaces and sees their right off alcatraz. It's two against one. Nothing new for mike nelson. He follows them down to some rocks underwater where they deploy a surface buoy. Then we see a convict one zero nine eight six. That would be mark bronson. He died into the water now. Mike gets it as he sees the convict getting into a wet suit. And putting on the gear. Mike shoots a flare off to signal. The guards on alcatraz hoping it works. Mike is now fully rigged mask wetsuit. Tank regulator weight belt and knife and their high tailing it off against a strong title current. But larry turns and he spots mike. He's going to fight a rearguard action while johnny and markswoman. It's a knife fight. And it's a good one larry's tough clever and slippery but might get behind. Him cuts his air hose and brings him to the surface. And that's where we see. Mike's knife into larry's first stage. The flare did its job. And there's a patrol boat from the island coming on the scene that's one bronson in the bag on the boat. They followed the brothers bubbles and when they catch up mike dies back in lights off a flare and pokes it at the brothers and another massive underwater fight breaks out mike pulls off marks masks shuts air off and shoves him johnny he then puts johnny in a stranglehold and brings the two brothers to the surface. Mike has thwarted escape attempt. Larry says on the boat. It was a pretty good scheme. Yeah mike doesn't think so. Wow this first. Episode new year was jam packed with some great underwater fight scenes. I guess they really wanted to get everyone excited about the show again. And you most definitely will recognize johnny bronson. That was leonard. Nimoy yes mr spock. He shows up again. So that's the alcatraz story from nineteen fifty-nine the first episode of season. Two of seon. Hope you enjoyed it. I'll be back again soon with another installment of seon. It's still alive here on scuba shack radio.

She grew up one a big family lot five kids. The matriarch of the family was estelle salia housekeeper. They grew up in a housing project in north philadelphia. Not easy but still staley was a disciplinarian in her daughter's words and everybody knows my mother. She's a headstrong woman. She's deceased now but she was known for her straight took. No nonsense backed down from nobody. You did not take her parking spot at the mall without a fight etc and down has carried that onto a much larger stage so just a very tight family and still somebody who's very much shaped by her mother and be the course of north philadelphia where she played against boys for most of her childhood and became not just very good but very tough. The neighborhood i grew up in you had to make sure that you had a reputation as being strong then back now from anybody was able to handle anything that was throwing your way and that has prepared me for any curve balls. Life can throw me north philly. Tough was the word her brother used. And they don't throw that around lightly a connection between the way she was raised where she grew up and the kind of basketball coach that she's become a where she was raised in where she grew up has affected every part of her. She is not a person who on some days. It's easy to play for our imagine especially early in her tenure at south carolina there were players who left the program high profile players. Who left the program. I would think don stay. They would tell you. She may not be for everybody because she is not going to suffer any foolishness. She will defend those players outside the program to the end of the earth. But that doesn't mean that she's going to give them an inch when they're in her. Jim staley has also become one of the more outspoken coaches and all of college basketball and josh recently wrote that quote staley. Mary's attributes that many have decided are incompatible. What did you mean by that. Well she's just fascinating to me because she is a black woman in the state of south carolina who has been pretty clear that she's not donald trump supporter. This is a state that voted for donald trump. So she's really walking a fine line there when she's got a lot of fans in a red state and she's pretty blue person but she's also shares a very strong christian faith with most south carolinians. She has been outspoken about police. Brutality inequality in the policing system at the same time. She's a special deputy at the rich county sheriff's office. She regularly rides armed with rich. County sheriff's deputies on their patrols. I do think that's relatable the coaches like some of the things that they do the de-escalate or tactics they use is relatable to deal with every day. Leon lot longtime sheriff of richland county said to me. If she wasn't a basketball coach she'd be a cop. She's just got that demeanor. Help people i mean. And that's what law enforcement should be about is about helping people and she wants to know people. She has a gift to gab. She can talk. Do you have to have good communications. Feel today law enforcement officer. She has that so you can't put her in a box and that's fascinating to me. How do you think she navigates. Straddling all of those worlds. She said to me that she is not stressed. I can't be anybody but me but at the same time you know. Most people here at south carolina in south carolina. Accept me for who. I am and i'm good with that and i'm good the ones that don't but i don't think there's a grand plan. I don't think she has an outline. I think she takes every interaction every moment and she deals with it very reflexively face what you could teach me something you can over me up to see things a little bit differently then. She's not a person who will not listen to somebody who has a different opinion. She says she craves hearing those different opinions. As long as the conversations can be respectful and stay within certain bounds. She wants that to happen. I can foresee a day where dawn staley is sitting in the middle of colonial life. Arena in the court at a podium and just taking questions from tons of people in the audience. Who don't agree with her on anything politically or socially. I think she would love that. I think she wants that stuff. But i don't think this is part of a bigger plan. I think she just deal with it from her. Core and then goes to the next day. Does the same

Will Oysters Ever Make a Comeback in the Bay?

"The ocean that's reporter khloe veldman even with a couple of friends so tough khloe. Sorry tough katrina. What's a tough assignment. I eat always does all the time. But i had actually never tried this type. It's called an olympia oyster or ali for short. Oh i've never heard of that kind. Are they like well. They're much smaller than the oysters. Most of us in the bay area a familiar with they taste kind of coppery and pungent and this special because they are native to the san francisco bay. But the oysters you just heard me and my friend guzzling actually harvested from our bay scientists. Say it's still too polluted from agricultural runoff and other chemicals like mercury instead. These came from a farm in washington state. However for thousands of years the olympia grew locally in vast numbers three generations back would be a safe to say that our family last word gathering oysters from the bayshore east bay alone chef and food activist vincent medina says the only was a dietary staple for many local tribes including his own ancestors in raw they would also be cooked in earth ovens underneath the ground and with of sea lettuces and different types of seaweed acorn sue vicious meals matthew buca is an environmental historian and has written a book all about the bays voice to full past. He says olympia oysters. All along the west coast stretching from alaska all the way down into central mexico all these perfectly adapted to survive the cold waters of san francisco bay but they need rocky surfaces to grow on matthew says by the mid eighteen hundreds thousands of years of slow sea level rise and melting sierra. Glaciers made the bay muddier. And that's bad for all these. They were struggling. Basically then the gold rush hit and brought thousands of golden protein hungry settlers. It didn't take long for them to destroy the local population forcing oystermen to look further afield. All the estuaries of the west coast are essentially mind for there to satisfy this endless demand from san francisco. Matthew says soon even those far-flung habitats had been plundered. There were relatively few all east left on the entire west coast but there was still a demand for them. So entrepreneurs took to importing non native varieties from the east coast. You can capture baby. Easter's barrel them up. Put them on. Board schooners later on board unrefrigerated train cars ship them across the entire united states and then they would be placed into san francisco. Bay on privately owned tied lands and harvested as crop demand for always was so high pirates frequently raided the beds bay area native. Jack london tells us about it in his autobiographical novel. John barley corn the winds of adventure blew the oyster pirates. Loops up and down san francisco bay. Before london became famous writer. he was among other things. An infamous oyster pirate every raid on. An- bed was a felony. The ofa glamorized his experience stealing oysters from the bay by night and selling them in the oakland markets the next morning in several literary works and behind it all behind all of me with you. A bubble whispered romance adventure but even the imported oysters didn't survive in the san francisco. Bay for long the already muddy waters were made worse by mining in the sierra during the gold rushes. This turned up more modern sanders sweat downriver. So the san francisco bay historian matthew book says grow moved their atlantic choices to the south bay when mantras less of a problem but heavy industry and human sewage polluted. The bay waters a rash of deaths connected to eating contaminated puts an end to the san francisco bay oyster industry so by the early twentieth century. There are plenty of oyster bay but the people eating them are no longer so sure if this is the right. Food in the nineteen thirties bombing resumed in the clean waters of drake's in somalia's base north of san francisco but the focus especially after world. War two was on pacific oyster varieties from japan. Interesting cultivating the native olympia oyster as a food source dwindled. It still hasn't really come back. So will we ever be able to eat the native only ounce of the bay again even though no always does a grown in san francisco bay food there are efforts to bring them back to help restore the based delicate ecosystem and ecologists have focused on the native. Only that once thrived here sickle spot. Oh you been question. Scott joseph fletcher at the bay natives. Plant nursery in the bayview to interview linda hunter. She's the founder and director of the wild oyster project. Oysters have so many wonderful benefits. Linda tells us does have superpowers. So one grown oyster can filter fifty gallons of water a day. Oysters helped maintain the balance of marine ecosystem but reducing algae and sediment that can contribute to low oxygen levels causing other marine life to die. There's also the fact that oysters provide have attacked for other critters we as cluster on discarded shells rocks peers and heart submerged surfaces. They fuse together. As they grow forming these rock like reefs that make ideal homes for other marine animals. Implants into says the protect coastal lands by reducing the impacts of storm wife's. It's been proven that voice to rapes attenuate. The effects of rising tides caused by the wild oyster projects is trying to rebuild these reefs. That works starts with collecting discarded oyster shells from local restaurants and piling them. Up part sites like bay natives shows in. Linda says eventually these shells will be built into reefs unplaced in the bay. The idea is for these manmade reefs to attract native voices and as a result other wildlife like ill gross salmon crabs egrets says. They've already installed reefs near alameda. Point pinot the first to reflect the at point panel in richmond. I got a phone call from a fisherman who is complaining that his fishing line had been snagged on one of our reef balls. And i said Have you noticed more fish. And he said yes. I have thank you very much. But before they can be turned into reefs. The oyster shells needs to be clete. And that's where the chickens come in. They natives is home to about two dozen chickens. This is the chicken launch. There's not chickens. you have to clean the shell. Otherwise they get stinky and they attract kinds of critters. Should we feed the ins- off the shelves at cleaned laid out in the sun and several years later gobi ready to use annoy staff. This curing process helps kill any harmful bacteria and houghton's the shells. We have plenty of show. We have over ten thousand times here. Linda tells joseph. The projects has been relying more heavily on individual choice to eaters recently since covid nineteen shelter in place. orders have shut down many local restaurants. "By the time six days passes you didn't hour of cardio which isn't like lot over the course of six days but it is an hour and then the day of thanksgiving or the day after thanksgiving if you get an extra walk or something. It's kind of more just a bonus I do think it's good like out here. In bega We see tons of families outside walking. And i realized that other parts of the country It'd be much more difficult but don't be afraid to get weird and throw on some layers of clothes and go for fucking walk in the snow but it tries to encourage other people to go with you like make like make it like a thing. Make it like fun. You don't have to be outside forever just You know just try to get a little bit in a little bit can go a long way For myself recently i just started implementing a little bit of cardio Birthday number forty four has coming up on december tenth and phil heath is actually somebody that inspired me got me fired up to start to work on getting in better shape again Not that i was in bad shape. But i was like i can kick it up a notch. And when he announced he was doing the mr olympia. I'll shit i'm gonna kind of work on some of that as well like. I'm not gonna pretend. I'm doing the olympia. Necessarily gonna take it that far But i'm going to push a little harder than normal and so i started getting better shape few weeks ago. I really took my time with it. We're still the diet wasn't a hundred percent. It was probably more like Eighty percent and then. I just been kind of tweaking. It added a little bit of cardio but the first day i did cardio i just said do minutes of cardio you lazy bastard and i didn't even want to do ten minutes because i haven't done it in so long i'm like i don't get on a stairmaster. Whatever like i don't feel like doing. I don't want to do ten minutes of cardio mike. I'm already lean earning good shape. I'm making all these excuses. I'm like you should just go. So i was like all right. How about like just go on there for like three minutes you know. And this is. From james clear. The author of atomic habits he said Make what you're about to do so simple that it's almost impossible to say no to so. If you like dude just to fucking push up you know it's like it's pretty hard to talk yourself out of you know doing one push-up or doing a one set of bodyweight squats for twenty wraps or something. Like that i mean it's just it's it's too easy. It kind of makes it feel like a pussy. You're like you're disappointed in yourself before you even try it if if you're saying no to Doing cardio for three minutes. So i'll say just do three minutes. I got on there and of course. I'm not gonna do three minutes. So i did six minutes and then i left. That was it. I was like that's good. That's a good start. Next day i came back and did seven minutes before the workout. The problem is the six minutes i did. I did after the workout. So that's really why didn't wanna do it. But the next time i came in i did seven minutes before the workout seven minutes after the workout. Then the next time i came in i did ten minutes before the workout ten minutes and so forth and then i did twenty minutes straight the other day and i did thirty minutes so here we are. You know Five six days later. I've now strung together doing five five or six days in a row of some cardio training so you can suck today and not be doing shit and within four five days you could have strung together a streak of nearly a whole entire week's worth of doing something consistently they could change that quickly. Can you guys talk about like maybe the the the mindset when it comes to You know so. Gyms are closing down if not already wherever everyone is but also even just in general like You know my wife is off this week. Jasmine my daughter's off this week I'll probably be working from home for majority of the week. Therefore you know getting access to jim. Although i you know have stuff here but i'm dislike. I'm around my family. Like i'm probably not going to really want to necessarily go all out and get a crazy. Jim session in but like i can still do. But i'll i know some people will see that a in their Situation and kind of fill. Like oh man. I didn't get in like a super hardcore workout You know what's the point or like i'm really fallen behind but really they're not so. Can you guys kind of shed some light on you know not necessarily being okay with a mediocre workout. But still just doing what you can right now. I mean what's the alternative. I think that that's kind of the way. I think about it. in these situations it's like well. You have a kettle. Bell have an aba roller I can either figure out a little workout to make me sweat and work my muscles with this and i have a slingshot so i can do some push stuff or i do nothing and i don't get any type of workout in and i feel even worse because a motte working on my body so like which ones better like. Do you have any other options. Really i mean if there are other options you can let me know. There might be something that i'm missing but it really does seem like you. Just gotta you gotta work with you got at. You absolutely can work with what you've got. You just have to make the decision to do it. Yeah there's a there's a book that i I think my dad or my brother got me a while back and they just got it for me because of the it has a weird title and it says like eat bacon. Don't jog the name of the book. And i kind of modeled the war on carbs after it. Because i thought like wow. What a great book. It's like a. It's like a pamphlet almost you know And in the book the guy talks about how people they just make too many boundaries. They make too many Barriers have too many barriers of entry when it comes to exercise and he said i think that it would be really helpful for people to stop thinking about working out and just start thinking about exercise just movement of the body and it's it's a lot easier to talk yourself into moving your body around Shit i got that kettle bell downstairs. i'm gonna. I'm gonna set a time on my phone for ten minutes and i remember three or four exercises that i can do it. That kettle bell. And i'm just gonna do them on back and forth between each exercise to a couple reps and keep alternating and when ten minutes is up That'll be my workout but a lot of times you see me. Workout like polo or like Like golf shorts or whatever not really like in like workout stuff. And i got that from that book. The book was like you don't need.

"Then I think at aged thirty two alexander the great dies he dies in the field he dies mysteriously he dies suddenly everything. He's built the biggest empire. The world has ever seen is thrown into absolute chaos. And what Kate Armstrong Calls Alexander's Royal Brose his hangers on his group of close friends and generals in warriors are instantly fighting over his empire and Olympias realizes she wants to hold power. She has to put all of her energy into protecting acting her grandson Alexander's infant son and maintaining his place as Alexander's successor ruler of this empire tire. Rather than letting everything fall apart does help the culture that came from Helps explain his is famous last words that he leaves his kingdom to the strongest and then he dies. So that's always been excited as these famously disastrous last words like why just say who has errors but he so famously loved and celebrated celebrated as Macedonian culture. He's Macedonian about it everybody grab for it. Yeah his mother and his human father. Both both are really strongly enmeshed in this idea. That strongest person rules. Yeah and that. That's what's best for the world Olympias believes that. What's best for the world is that her grandson is in charge? And so she fights with every ounce of her energy gee and her skill to make that habit basically the next several years are going to be taken up by what's called the wars of the successors so this is when all the Royal Bros.. There are all kinds of battling it out for. Who's going to be the next Alexander who's going to take his place so Olympia goes to work immediately goes on for years? And then one of Alexander's commanders. Basically says Olympiads. I want you to come back over to Macedonia to take care of your grandson now. She's no dummy. This could be a trap She's not going to walk right into this but eventually she goes but a force has been brewing to go against Mr. So again we have the two camps. We Have Philip era dais and all the people who are backing him to take the throne and then we have team Alexander's son. Filiberto has gotten married. Need to woman called. You're a dicey. She's the daughter of a woman named synonymous. WHO's an incredible woman all in our own SONANI and her daughter basically basically decided? We're going to get you married to Phillip Davis and we're finally going to take this room but Olympia that's and her. Supporters are having none of it the two armies meet in the fall of three seventeen at the Macedonian Malaysian border. So we have your indices army and Olympia says army coming together for the final showdown offer this empire. Though no neither of these women command the forces per se. They are most certainly riding at the head of them. You're a dicey dresses in full Macedonian battlegear ear but Olympia chooses to deck herself out as a worshiper of dyonisis her absolutely brilliant understanding of who she is and what she means to these people and she shows up dressed as a goddess essentially. She is this fifty something grandmother of this infant king and she is every inch the VIC. Greek goddess that they expect in full Regalia on a white horse at the front of the battle and I love imagining her. A strider horse hair whipping in the wind staring down this enemy army ready to go all in for this last bid for power. Wow reminding these people who she is and what she stands for that Eurydice his entire hire army quits joins her side. So without even having to Fight Olympia says one the day. What do you think that really happened? Even darker hates our guts says it happened. Wow that's the way to win a battle through effective costuming I mean the UN. I heard one hundred percent get into that kind of warfare. If it comes down to commitment accurate costuming I am there so at this moment. She has more power than any woman in the entirety of the Greek world. In charge of the Kingdom and in charge of Alexander's and she had just stuck with that Oh things might have been okay. She Has Philip Era Dais stabbed because we have to get rid of that guy and she lets you're a dicey dicey choose her own death which ends up being by hanging. which is the death of choice for royal women of this time apparently if she had stopped up there perhaps things could have gone differently? But she doesn't stop there she decides to kill this guy. CASSANDRA WHO's another one of the Royal Bros.. Who she it has a grudge with? She decides to kill his brother and she defiles the tomb of another one of his brothers. In revenge for Alexander's Alexander's death. So then she kills one hundred Cassandra's friends. This is not a great move. It does not make her a lot. The friends in the Macedonian court is this behavior any worse than any of the men around her not really but because she's a woman in charge and it's just something that Macedonia cannot allow and she loses the things she has fought so hard to gain that goodwill and respect of the people and it's the end of Olympias Cassandra who's very angry rightly so very angry about what she's done comes riding into town and only bs just doesn't have the supporters at this point to be able to fight him so oh she has to essentially surrender and sadly he puts her to death in three sixteen and we aren't quite clear how she dies. There are several stories. The the one I liked best comes from Justin who gives her a little bit more noble drama. He says she goes out to meet the forces armed against her in full Royal Regalia. When win the crowd sees her there reminded of what God is she is and that she's Alexander the greats mother they are so struck with what she stands for that? They can't kill her. None of these people who have been sent to end her reign will do it. Really and eventually CASSANDRA has to hand pick relatives of the people. She killed To come and kill her because no one else will do it. It and she dies with her Chin up like a warrior and as Justin has it you could see Alexander even in his dying mother as horrendous as many of the things that she did are I do have a grudging respect for her. She thought literally to the death for her family and nothing was going to prevent them from having and every opportunity that she could fight and claw out of society for them. And though I I definitely we don't admire that in mother's now. Yeah I can't judge her. Yeah I mean it is true. Those were the times. Is this how you mother in third century BC agrees. We don't know and I mean no one can say that. She did not love her children. She was a dedicated mother. We know that the last he loved his mother. According into one ancient writer he said he wanted to consecrate her immortality to make his mother God just like become.

"So Alexander apparently jumps up and throws a drink in analysts face so outraged by this slight. This is the soap opera wedding. Yeah Scandal Hey. And in that moment instead of defending his son the King Philip rises drunkenly from his seat and points. His sword awarded Alexander in front of everyone. This feels very game frenzy as well except instead of killing everybody. The Olympia and Alex decide you know what fine. If we're not wanted here will leave. And she and Alexander self exile back to her hometown. Really this is a very bold and unexpected move. Yeah she isn't one to let anyone threaten her power or her sons power into publicly. Call it into question. This is what I mean about. She is outside of the box walks. She is thinking lots of steps ahead on the chessboard. I think she really understands the power of a power move who've That she is raising herself and her son above this uncouth behaviour half and she is going back to where she's appreciated. She aided eventually Phillips. The error of his ways realizes he's chased his very capable grown son away and he invites them both back to court. The gamble has paid off and she is back on top then. Everything blows up again. Dan When Philip is very publicly stabbed by a guy named Pausania one of his jilted lovers everything erupts into chaos consistently. Macedonia is without a almost immediately. The whispers start circling that it may have been Pausania who wielded the knife but of course it was Olympia. Who pushed him to do it again? We have no idea whether she was involved or not. I suspect not. Her son was back in Phillips Good graces. He was the clear next in line for the throne that she had a lot of reason to kill Philip other than Philip. Philip was kind of worst regardless. Her son is now in charge and as his mother. Olympias is in a position to wield a a lot of power prefers she and her son to cement their position in this court of as plutarch puts it great jealousies terrible hatred and endanger everywhere. So they start taking out anyone they see as a potential threat and this is when Olympia STAS one of the most brutal controversial show things I suppose that she ever does. She has Phillips Latest Wife that Macedonian Cleopatra and her infant baby killed there are a couple of versions of how she does it. Maybe she burns them both. Sit F. O.. Maybe she. She kills the baby in front of Cleopatra and that forces her to kill herself no possibly she sends her for a variety of suicide options. Another says Olympia Sends Cleopatra Three things a rope a dagger and a vial of poison and and lets her choose the way. She wants to go out somehow. She disposes of these two. Maybe they died of natural causes and it's all a- plutarch smear campaign it could be totally could be but also this viciousness par for the course for this court Everyone is doing this kind of thing and definitely Alexander has done infinitely worse things than this but the way that this entire interaction is framed by plutarch by all of the male writers later. They want us to believe that this killing is revenge because this woman dared to marry King Philip Nonsense this is a strategic power. Move to protect her son and his kingdom. Yeah I mean it is. Of course it's bloody it's cutthroat it's the ancient world right but it's not personal it's business but of course when a woman does it has to be personal it has mostly driven is Feminine Raid Jealousy was slighted and of course women could never strategize. They just react yeah. This is a woman who possibly arranged an entire maybe. These snakes are God's scenario to shoo her husband away but we're expected to believe that she murdered a baby because she was mad at this woman. Just it doesn't panel to me. This isn't the way that this strategic warrior woman women works. This is protecting her son. This is consolidating power. Doesn't make it great. You know I'm not a fan of these actions. So she does that. They nullify all the threats and then by three thirty four Alexander's replaces King of Macedonia. Pretty well assured and that's theo that he prepares to write off on his big decade-long adventure turning himself into the guy that we now call Alexander the Great. She watches him right away. Not Knowing this the last time they're ever going to see each other her. I think about this moment and again. This isn't a moment that really gets talked about a written about. But you just imagine that moment kerr standing there watching her son on. She's poured everything into so much. Love fierce protection everything. She knows everything she's learned has been put into do this. Boy Who is now a man and she's never going to see him again. So Alexander Rides off. Does many things back back home. She's not the region she's not running things but she's pretty close. She's taking the plunder he sending back in and making offerings for him. It places like Delphi and Athens. She's writing diplomatic letters to members of state into other regions. She's making sure that no thrown pretenders are going to take advantage manage of Alexander's absence. She's giving gifts to foreign leaders so she's not acting as regent but she is maintaining the status quo and she's really leaving leaving the chair open for when her son comes.

Her name all one word so they know we sent you time for a new name again so at some point in all this she picks up the name that she's now famous by which is Olympia. One version of how she gets it is that she takes it on in celebration of her husband's Sup- victory at the Olympics when his chariot team wins a big race. But I don't like that version of the story. It's also just as likely she gets it as as part of a Macedonian festival in honor of Zeus. And if she did in fact have an affair with Zeus Sandra boyfriend. So exactly I like like the image of Olympias claiming that name is her own having it be something she takes on herself to show her own power reminding people who she is and who she knows. Alexander lives with his mom at least until he's six years old. She is very involved involved in raising him in teaching him. He is raised on the stories of these heroes. That are in his bloodline. The important the powerful people from whom he comes And this destiny that he is born to you so while we don't know a lot about what she actually does. During during this period the fact that Alexander grows to manhood the fact that nothing bad happens to him the fact that he never gets shoved aside for other children says a lot about her fierceness about her savvy about her ability to keep her son safe which I think is really impressive. I don't think she gets enough credit for that and it works go. This training of this future hero works and he becomes his father's darling. Alexander's father is gone a lot. He's really busy. Expanding Macedonia's borders warring warring with other nations essentially making Macedonia the biggest power that the Mediterranean had ever seen really so by sixteen Alexander's doing well he's doing in great he's commanding armies. He's fighting off leary while his father is away. He's making Olympias very proud. And it seems like his ascension is assured and then in three thirty seven Philip decides he's going to get married again and this time he picks Macedonian woman and this is a major threat any children that this Macedonian woman gives birth who are going to be home town envoys. Alexander might be a hero but he's only half Macedonian And Olympia very concerned. And she's proven right pretty quickly. When in one of the worst for other of the bride drama moment set a wedding ever? Everyone's drinking everyone. Everyone's having a nice time. The father of the bride makes some very loud and off color comments he called on the Macedonians to pray to the gods for a legitimate Heir to the throne.

"The story goes that Alexander's Alexander's father is not actually King Philip. The second Alexander's father is actually Zeus. Yes he is in fact Demi God of course which not only means. He's unstoppable and people shouldn't try to oppose him. Because you don't WanNa make Zeus angry angry but that she was chosen by the God. This is the best adds to her prestige as well as his and we don't know if she's the one who starts circulating this story or if Alexander is the one who start circulating the story but to me it has they all of the hallmarks of an Olympias production and of course nobody can disprove this storied. And how are you going to prove that. It wasn't Zeus another brush with the Gods in her bedroom room comes later. Olympias has had two children a son and a daughter and the king comes to her bed and finds lines sneaks in her bed. Philip of course is freaked out by this but not as one might think because because there are snakes in his wife's bed that's totally normal. Apparently the problem is maybe these snakes are God. Oh maybe this is a god in bed with his wife and disturb them sure. That's that's some clear thing. So Oh he leaves her alone and he decides. That's it no more visiting Olympia. Says by chamber for me. Okay now how. She's no longer burdened with more pregnancies. More babies she can put all of her effort into raising two children that she has unless Zeus comes knocking again unless Uis comes knocking again but apparently he did not okay if this is also a Olympias production. This is very clever. Yeah she has established her boundaries without ever having to actually push back herself. Yeah cool against the king either way weird and one of the things that she becomes known for snakes in her bed.

"There is apparently some sort of cash flow issue of the soldiers haven't been paid or do some money and they're angry about it. We've already pointed out occasions where the macaroni UNIAN infantry the rank and file can get kind of fiery. It's not just the ladies in this story from the region that can get that way macaroni. And infantry can get a little fiery and she's playing playing that up she's inciting them one history and I read said it got to the point where the troops were almost ready to start linking their officers or the marshalls or whatnot. There were to temporary People who took purchases job just until they decided something the conference and both of them were unable to handle the day. Aridity if you believe the sources sources sort of threw up their hands and didn't know what to do so when I say connect the data points and then realize what's going on in between who the hell can't handle a seventeen. I mean you say say to yourself. How is she already such an issue? Enter onto the scene and titter Olympia says old enemy. The Vendor van de the head of the Vendetta clan the whole thing right he shows up once again we imagine his late seventies here probably and he's sort of quells the situation and and it's not easy as one historian said it was a A blend of firmness and conciliation. That helped get the troops in line again and antipathy bidder sort of puts a muzzle or a straight jacket on a day ridicule for the moment you know throws her off twitter. Whatever it is wherever the ancient equivalent is but it doesn't sound like it was easy the and the fact that he's got to do this once again shows you that she's a very interesting character right eye so to get the feeling like you know Oh? He loved to have her killed in a different world would just solve everything but his hands are tied right. She's got the cloak of invulnerability right now and she apparently knows it and she's going to use it and temperature is going to be given the top job basically at this conference. He's going to be the guy that succeeds purpose which is exactly the opposite of what Olympias was hoping for her so much of the machinations that she's been involved with since her son's death have been designed to prevent this guy from becoming powerful and here he is is basically now at the top of his of his game in his late seventies approaching early eighties. He will come back to Mac Adonia in three three twenty eight thousand nine hundred. ABC bringing both kings with him. Phillip asked the Mascot King and Alexander's probably would you say toddler. Now Alexander the fourth breath with his mother Alexander's Persian battery and wife essentially And typically also now will hold. This office have regent. He basically has all of the trappings of legitimacy. That you could possibly have to be the one who Gives orders in Alexander's stead except for Alexander's body. PTOLEMIES of course coveting that at home talking to it. Maybe when no one's looking but with anticipate are coming back to Mac academia with this sort of power and authority. It's hard not to see this as one of the lowest points in Olympia says life and maybe she's in great physical danger. We're here to remember not only Did you already have a lot of water under the bridge. Probably in the relationship with this guy But she she can plausibly be accused of setting in motion the wave of destruction and wars and everything. That's been going on since Alexander died so I mean he's he's got a lot of reasons to WANNA see her gone. It's a time when a person who had devoted their entire life to a particular deity might expect a little divine intervention. And perhaps if you look at things from a magical point of view It's possible that that's exactly what she gets here in three nineteen BC a relatively short short time. After he arrives back in Macadamia after being given you know the trappings of purchases position legitimacy and typically dies. Now obviously there's no talk of conspiracy or worries about poison and whatnot. Here when you're seventy eight seventy nine eighty eighty one years old. Whatever he was People aren't surprised some of the reason. If you're a person who wants to go tell Olympias doll. Thank your God did this. He was an old old man. He was bound to kick off eventually. She might come back with a very plausible reply and say yeah. But how do you explain the next part then. The next part is that as antipathy lay dying his son Cassandra was supposed to be at his side. When last? We cassandra Alexander. The Great was beating his head against the wall and he was forever. Traumatized couldn't walk by a statue of the great figure without going weak in the knees even decades later were told. Cassandra who might have been the guy that delivered the poison to the cup. Bearer that killed Alexander poisoned did kill Alexander Cassandra's by his dad's bedside and clearly expects to be the one who is. Dad gives his power and authority to and the reason you can deduce. Used that is because when his dad doesn't do. This CASSANDRA gets pissed. Runs often immediately starts the second round of the successor. Wars about forty five minutes. After the last round ended ended. You can see why people sometimes like to think of them as continuous conflicts. Now here's the thing head. CASSANDRA gotten the Gig from his dad. It would have been a disaster for Olympia in her people and that was sort of the one you would think was going to get the job so antipathy might have an old and that might have been expected but the idea that anticipated would hand the regency over not to his son. Cassandra but to a person who would end up being close enough to Olympia. His to be on her side will what are the odds that sometimes it pays to have friends in high places. She might think I've read some really good histories that have really good. Rational explanations for why interpreter might not have given the job because Sandra the first one and the most plausible being. He may not have seen it as his job to give it was the syndicate. Right the other bosses who gave me this job and and they're the ones who will decide who replaced me. I read one guy who had a great it line about wisdom because when you look at the only successor who's really gonNA come out ahead and all these Crabs in a bucket dynamic. Kind of thing. It's going to be telling me the guy with Alexander's body audience. Sometimes there's almost a karmic sort of explanation given why he's the one that chose not to participate in Alexander's so-called funeral games right state of the crabs and the bucket dynamic therefore he survived right. What's the line from war games? The only way to win is not to play Ptolemy. Didn't play and maybe antipathy by not giving his power aurthority to his son was basically asserting that listen son. Stay out of this mess and you'll prosper. But if I give this ring to you they're going to see this as is an attempt to create a dynasty. You're going to get all those powerful generals combining to take you down the way they took down purpose. Let's just avoid. This will give the job to good ole loyal. We'll play per Kahn or polysilicon. This is going to be this guy. This poor prolific guys moment on the world stage. He he seems like a trustworthy not very August general in a in a room full of really great generals one historian not very nice. Way said he was as a Jackal amongst lions the lions being the great marshals one the badge general though is just he's GonNa end up fighting these other generals and they're really good so all of his shortcomings shortcomings will be exposed and this is where You know if you're having that argument with Olympias trae explain to her that this is not your God favoring you you come back with yeah well. If you're God was trying to help you out. Why would he saddle you with the Political Conne- guy as your general? Because that's where Olympia real downsides side's GonNa happen in his fighting who's he gonNA be fighting. Cassandra what's he going to be fighting over. Which of the two kings gets to be the only king you know that? Deal when Alexander Xander die. We're going to have to kings and they're both going to be legitimate. We're GONNA RAISE THEM UP BLAH BLAH BLAH. Yeah well that ends here. There's going to be one king and it's going to be figured out who it is over the next couple of years not going to be the mascot King Philip Jauregui as it's going to be the let's call him. The toddler King Alexander the fourth. Maybe he's five years old now so maybe not toddler anymore. The representatives of the Mascot King obviously a day or Eurydice key they will hook their wagon. Both sides need military support. They will hook their wagon to Cassandra anders caused. So he's kind of their champion and we don't know yet whether a day. Your key figures that Cassandra is her puppet or whether Cassandra figures. She's she's his on the other side. You have the little kid Alexander the fourth. You have his mother Alexander's Persian battery and wife. You have Olympia. And you have this guy. He's going to be the guy that goes wrestles with Cassandra. All over this theater militarily some CASSANDRA's allies and basically basically lose. That's what happens. They lose everywhere else. But there's going to be a battle that actually physically involves both of our female champions here on opposite sides I can tell you with only a little bit of Shane. That the entire reason I've told you this entire story the entire reason I would justify the fifty-seven part series on the cable network that I'd like to do is for this battle battle and this scene and unfortunately the ancient sources tell you it happened. Give you a sentence or two but they leave out all the juicy drama and color that could be in there also also all try to fill it in with what little we know what little we knows already fascinating there's an ancient historian Durris of Samos. He called this battle the first war between women certainly he is mistaken because with all of human history. There's just too much out there where you you can say reasonably with an odds. The odds out there probably happened before and I always safely say it probably happened in China before. It's a safe bet. But in three seventeen B. Easy e at one point again. There's a lot we don't know dating may be suspect but a day. Ridicule might have come back to Macedonia and attempted to sort of just dismiss The guy that anticipated left everything to sorry pulled up recon. We don't need you anymore. Your services are no longer required. We're giving it to Cassandra. And Phillip Davis is going to be the new king or whatever she said that. It's so pissed off Olympias that Olympia gets an army together. Most of them the local levies from her homeland and she may have been ruling her homeland directly at this point by the way she'll get her levies together she has macaroni and troops Both sides I should point out have Macedonian staffs of of command officers. They're not operating reading alone. There's there's a group of people deciding on strategy and all that but there will be an encounter at the pirate. Macaroni border between these two women at the heads of their armies basically sort of. Let's let's call them. The faces of both sides on one side Is a day a aridity with an army with quite a few macaroni INS on paper..

"That's not just speculation and because some of the other women in this story have an incident very similar to that happen to them. This is where the other women come into the piece Philip L. UP. The second had multiple wives remember. We talked about one of these wives as as an example of how tough in a Philip shouldn't have problem with Olympia Right. He has that warrior than Illyrian Warrior Warrior Princess as a wife. What other ones the wonder woman lady fights with Sword Shield helmet remember? We talked about her. Will you know she had children with Philip. Imagine engine how Augusta Child of that woman trained in combat and maybe even leading troops melted with Phillips. DNA of how August those kids would be while here. They come come into the story and their female as we said earlier. It's hard to keep track of the names and the players in this story without a scorecard. This is the case by the way for any long wars thirty years' wars the same way where there's so much time for so much stuff to occur that it's impossible to keep track of it all. It's a multi generational racial soap opera. Kind of as we said I was trying to think of the way to simplify this. The best and the best way to say it is that Alexander's half sister. Mr The woman who we just talked about who is the daughter of Wonder Woman Philip. The second her name is Kanani. It looks like San if you have received written also trained in the ways of the warrior earlier in Princess's writes she's a killer a hand to hand killer apparently to very culture. I mean she's she's Philip the second's daughter. She's the king's daughter so she'll just kill you in a cultured sort of manner She's involved in what some historians call a scheme. It looks much more like a grab for power in this Post Alexandrian world. And let's remember power. This might not be because they're power. Hungry power is synonymous with safety here and the best way to get eliminated is to be shut out of power by your enemies. What happens though? Is that this Kanawha daughter of wonder woman and Philip the second makes a a bold play to seize one of the sources of power and authority in this very unstable post Alexandrian world and this is all happening in the wake of Alexander's death so a year to three. This is the initial you know. Initial power moves of this whole thing. There's two places that power emanates from officially in this world right now and it's the two kings Alexander's infant son Alexander the fourth with the Persian or bactrian. Mom I think he's still in Asia at this point but he's an infant right he's he's a prop in the power struggles for now. But then you have. Philip era day is the mascot king the one with the disability of some sort. He's is almost certainly being used as a poppet by the warlords you know who are the regions right. Were ruling for the king. WHO's right here? And he's indisposed at the moment but what happens is somebody steals the puppet from the warlords right that the person who's making it possible for you to keep the army loyal unhappy and thinking thinking that he's running the show and really you're running the show through him. If you're one of the world's how you. How do you prevent somebody from stealing the puppet? Well that's what this scheme is this daughter of Philip. The second I can wonder woman is bringing her daughter a day. You ridicule is going to be what she's known as eventually bringing her daughter and she's going to try to marry her or daughter to one of the king's right she can't have the infant king. He's not marriageable anyway. But Philip Paradise doesn't have a wife now if you're trying Ryan to pull this scheme off though you can't go to the warlords you can't go to the people who have the puppet now that you're going to steal the puppet from and say. Hey let me steal the puppet. Do I have your blessing. You gotTA bypass them well. How do you bypass them? You go right to the source of power the macaroni and army and the infantry the salt of the earth types so the warlord general type successors they get word that this is underway that the scheme is ongoing and that this woman Kanani is on the way and I've red sources that say she has a small bodyguard with her others that she's got a decent size entourage others just got a whole army behind her so I don't know which of those is true. But she's she's protected the general out someone to intercept her before she could get to the infantry. 'cause Lord knows the infantry will probably say yes to this deal and the intercepting force. Ah Somehow blocks her for a little bit of time and in that little bit of time she is killed. Sources differ on. What happened here? Everything I'm from assassinated to Violence breaking out between the various bodyguards. That leads to her being killed in the fray to a full blown Story again from one of the less reputable sources that she's giving a speech. She sounds fully like Phillips daughter in this warrior princess like she's getting up in the face of her assassins and and pleading your case and yelling coming at them and she's in the middle of a speech in one of these stories to the troops that are there. They're macaroni and troops there. Witnessing all this and while she's in the middle of the speech she's she's stabbed or killed and cut down in the middle of the conversation no matter which of those stories is true at apparently happens in a way that either the Macedonian troops see it at the time. I'm watching it live or hear about it soon after and they're outraged. You can't kill Philip. The second's daughter who the hell are you and and these warlords who are counting on these military forces to stay loyal to them are about to be thrown to the crocodiles by these same troops because they killed what Philip the second's daughters orders in front of them. The only way they managed to avoid disaster is to give in to what that now dead daughter of. Philip wanted the half have to go ahead and let this granddaughter Riphil Up This Day a year ridicule lady Mary the Mascot King Mary the poppet and and his attitude was ABC Bosworth who coined the phrase and. It's not very nice The marriage of the Amazon to the idiot. But it gives you a sense of what's going on here and easily easily controllable not very August Personality who was being controlled by these powerful marshalls is now going to be controlled by this powerful personality called a day aridity. And if you took an ancient Greek playwright brought them in the time machine and let them right for one of today's TV v daytime soap operas. That's how I see this whole whole situation unfolding. 'cause it looks like this is revenge from another one of Philip's wives lives against Olympias from the grave through her descendants. Something wonderfully Greek about that this day. A your riddick. He's going to be an instant thorn in on the side of Olympias though remember. She's she's the granddaughter of her husband. She's going to be an instant thorn in the side. Because what if she's able to make you you know. Phillip Davis the the Mascot King. What if she can make him legitimate enough so no one's gonNA wait around seventeen years for Olympia? His grandson to come of age in other words could she turn the puppet king into a real king the only king that she dominates. It's wonderful but I said earlier that this period is one of the ones I use as evidence for why history ruins fiction for me because we already have a wonderful story here. Kinda unbelievable wild you know And then in typical Alexandrian fashion the story gets kicked up two notches notch number one. Apparently the Alexander. The great had day ridicules father killed when she was a kid one of his purges you know potential competitor so if she didn't like the other side of the family to begin with she really doesn't like him. Now the other thing and I find this to be the one where I would send the script back to the screenwriter and said sorry you went too far. Nobody's going to buy that She's apparently something like sixteen years old. Her Age is tough to determine. In dividing dividing the spoils. The Robin Waterfield said sixteen. Wow and sixteen really doesn't mean anything in a neutral playing field historically speaking right because we all know people got married younger or Romeo and Juliet and she was like thirteen fourteen. Something like that but we're not talking about somebody who gets married and then ends up in somebody's royal family or what not. We're talking about somebody. Who almost immediately asserts her prerogatives and tries to rest as much control as she she can grab over the situation here? And she's not playing with a bunch of little court functionary. She's doing this in a room full of these generals and marshals. That are so great. I said that only like Napoleon's group generals and marshals and Jenga's cons. I mean it's rarified air and some of these guys are like multiple times her age. There's a bunch of these dudes in their late sixties. All the way up to their mid seventies still in the field fighting by by the way they don't make people like this anymore We should point out guys. who were fighting with Alexander's Dad? The day Alexander was born and and some sixteen year old is going to come in there who wasn't even a part of the story five minutes ago and start telling them how it's going to be. This is insane and I wouldn't believe it when I do my multi part in over the forty five fifty seven episodes. Whatever it's going to be on my cable channel? I'm going to find some actress from that region because I feel like there's in my head anyway. I have very specific kind of fire in mind. That's native to the region. I guess you could say you know Greece northern Greece Albania Nia Bulgaria. Maybe maybe Sicily And then go find yourself like a sixteen year old from there who it sounds like something out of the hunger games. Doesn't it too much to be believed because this sixteen-year-old is not going to stay in the shadows at all now. The year she marries Philip Day though is three twenty one. BC Z.. E. This is two years after Alexander. The great dies and it is the year that the whole post Alexander deal on how we're going to run. Things goes murderously sideways. The deal made in the wake of Alexander's death under pressure in haste. It never seems like that had much much of a chance of lasting especially with all these ambitious powerful people involved. It would require a lot of good behavior on a lot of people's parts to understand the setup because it's kind of important Essentially what all these people did in deciding how they were gonNA run Alexander's Empire after he died was to run it like the Persians ran. There's really if you want to look at it similar to the way. The macaroni is ran Macedonia before they got all big and powerful. All these great successors these generals these marshals these. He's high administrators these bodyguards Alexander would all be given territories. You know think Al Capone southside his territory. PTOLEMY PTOLEMY GETS Egypt it's all these people rule these areas and they ruled them kind of like kings and I keep calling him warlords because they fit the definition of the term at the same time. One historian reminds us is that these are at this time period people who are practically kings themselves fabulously wealthy immensely famous. Lots of troops Swear swear allegiance to them. I mean these are these are kings in their own right and you start if you're a king after a while wanting to be treated like a king and not really wanting to bow the need any boss of bosses but this system has one. That's the deal. It is like a Persian system where all of the SATRAPS are kings in their own territory. But there there's someone called the king of kings and that was the high commander while that person is a title in this system is regent and they they rule with the royal power in the name of the two kings who are not capable of ruling at the moment. This person just happens to get this job Because he was at Alexander's band side as Alexander Lay Dying..

"This is a cult of personality. The empire right and it's really concentrated into one person. He makes all the decisions. He's I mean. Every he's the heart the soul in the brain of this place and when he goes away a a bunch of the Macedonian nobility go into a room and start debating what we know. Here's what we're GONNA do now. The best way to think about this is that this is as close as you can come there in Babylon where Alexander dies by the way. This is as close as you didn't come to the old macaroni and smoke filled room. Where the aristocrats and the heads of the families decide who it's going the be have to be in our jed for the last long period of time? But you know we'll figure this out was Elizabeth Carney points out though they've had two kings and haven't had to do this for for a long time in the last time they did something like this Mac. Adonia was a not important at all kingdom north of Greece a bunch of barbarians according to the Greeks and the Greeks could actually actually from the southern states could actually interfere in in who got to be the Macedonian King and now she points out there having one of these meetings to determine half the known worlds his fate. It's a little bit different isn't it. What's more they're operating in a really weird One historian called it a potentially terrifying long period of time. Here after Alexander's death. There's a problem. Sometimes when you read history and in the black words on the white page fail to convey The parts of history. Sometimes that are the most human right the reason it can't be a science the emotional stuff and there's two kinds of emotional stuff. There's there's you're having an emotional moment yourself breath and that's very different than society is having an emotional moment all at the same time and I try to think of emotional analogies which is both a a very cool and stupid open concept at the same time because there's really no analogies when you think about what might happen but you try to say okay. If people in this time period are operating in a stunned sort of state of mind I try to think of like after nine eleven when you walked around and everybody had this. There's no good English word for us. Like twenty adjectives to try to explain spiny where I'm sure one really good long. German word would hit it right on the head like they always do stunned Surprised Disbelief real sense of disbelief. And there's like a brain fog if it's anything like the nine eleven thing There's a real sense of trepidation about what happens now. And it's not hysteria mania but it's not stable. It's a time where you could see. The emotional state of mind of everybody is on edge and has every major historian Orien- points out from the sources. We have which are not great. You get this feeling like civil war could happen at any moment like you have gasoline soaked wood here and it wouldn't take much and the reason why is because the elites in the Macedonian army the cavalry are the ones in the back smoke filled room thinking they're going to figure this out. The infantry of the Macedonian Army are the salt of the earth types. They're not going to be so much salt of the earth types later when they get rich and they've turned mercenary but during this time period. They're still like the farmer. People of Macedonia You know the people who have a real loyalty to the Royal House who who have it. There's more mythical sort of field. Patriotism is the wrong word in the Arab before nationalism wisdom arose. But it's a little like patriotism. Their their allegiance is to the family of Alexander. I mean think about it. If you have had to virtual demi-god kings in a row from that line I mean. Why would you WANNA change horses in Midstream Alexander and Philip and now you want to do something else and by the way in mentioned in the something else the agreement eventually worked out with all these crabs in a bucket In this back room trying to broker some deal is that they're going to wait to see about the child. Piled that Roxana Alexander's wife is pregnant. With because if it's a boy we will hold the kingship. They'll have a regency right and we told you already eighteen years. These guys are GONNA hold this. Keep the throne warm for eighteen years. Okay well that's a certain kind of decision right there isn't it. And the infantry who are made up like we said of these people who are loyal to the Royal House and they pretty much have their own idea who the throne should go to to and they present him to the cavalry. Apparently in one of these making them an offer. They can't refuse kinds of deals. And he's dressed this. This person is dressed in in Alexander's closed. Supposedly one source you know hasn't been the armor His name just added by this group of infantry by the way is Phillip. So you dressed it Alexander's close your name. Is Phillip will. They're trying to tell you something. It's Philip era day. Though it's Alexander's brother who has that sort sort of indeterminable mental condition as one historian said the only reason that this is the only person you have to turn to because anybody that tallies any was afraid of his gone by now so he wasn't afraid of this guy why because he's no threat along route someone else that said the fact that the infantry knew him and he was in Babylon with them he was sort of a mascot. Apparently is the way it's portrayed the team mascot But the fact that the infantry knew him and wanted him for this role may have been an indication. That's not really true in history. So who knows the two sides the infantry the salt of the earth type start clashing with the cavalry violence almost breaks out or or does and the cavaliers Babylon the infantry stays in Babylon and then the cavalry puts Babylon under siege. You have an explosive moment here and then a deal is brokered. The deal is that there will be no compromises on either side that both sides get what they want. So there's going to be two kings the unborn child of Roxanne who does turn out to be a boy and Alexander. The great is Alexander the third. So they'll name this when when Alexander the fourth and Alexander's half brother son of Philip. Anti FA salion dancing girl. I believe is going going to be the king and neither one of them can rule without a regent so regent is appointed and away. We go Elizabeth. Carney tries to get into the head a little bit of Olympias on an emotional level when she finds out her son is dead. She has no body she has nothing and you know. Most mothers would be very bereaved in this situation. Her situations worse because Alexander was her guarantee of safety not just for her but for remediate loved ones altogether the reason her enemy anticipate her couldn't touch her when Alexander was alive. He's still in Mac Adonia. She's nearby if she's not in macaroni I think she's she keeps going back and forth between Macedonia and her homeland in Malaysia. But all of a sudden I mean antipathy can do whatever he wants to except for one thing. He's got to be careful because all throughout the rest of her life. The you salt of the Earth. Macaroni and soldiers not so much the cavalry but but the people on the ground they everyday Joe's in the ranks. They're gonNA show an immense awesome out of loyalty to her and the loyalty of the troops during this time period in this next successor wore is key because at times times they will turn on their commanders in this in the upcoming wars. They'll be incidents of them deciding to. I mean in one one famous case the baggage edge of the infantry in a in a in a conflict is captured and so to get their baggage back the hand the general over it. It's going to be very interesting. Time period for all of these different generals Who essentially have pieces of the Vermont that they're that they're fighting with against other pieces of the Vermont but sometimes the pieces in the Vermont? Have a mind of their their own. And Olympia is one of those people that will prove to be A dangerous person to do anything against because your own hair mock troops might might turn against you. This is an interesting thing for the generals to try to have to deal with its dynamic in this crisis and and interestingly enough. It's not just Olympia. That commands this sort of loyalty from the backbone of the Macedonian Army and probably the farmers in the folks back home I'm in Macadamia. It's not just her. It's all the close family of Philip. The second and of course. She's not the only close family of Philip. The second she's also not the only one able to channel power in the here and now through ghosts. Ghosts Philip the Second Olympia says long dead husband now. Great Philip. The Second Alexander's Dad. You know he had seven wives right eating just have Olympias and those wives produced offspring. Didn't they obviously. They didn't have any of the male offspring. Spring survived become competitors of Alexander. Because well. That's what purges are for right. Alga Alexander would've gotten those guys but the women are no threat to him so they usually didn't get touched which means when it comes to what those salt of the Earth backbone of the Macedonian Army and probably the Macedonian folks back home if they have a loyalty to the Royal Family at this point that mainly means women which provides a level of power boost that is unusual. What's unusual usual about the next part of this story? It's it to me. It is the best part of the story because it's so rare it's rare to see women exerting themselves on the on the global geopolitical stage especially before for modernized. But they're out there. There's incidents there's even incidents of multiple women doing it at the same time but they're rare. I've never I'm ignorant on so many subjects and I'm sure it happened in Chinese history because everything happened in Chinese history once upon a time But I have not encountered another era where you have so many powerful August women in the story story operating on both sides by the way and often at odds with each other in a in a full on geopolitical diplomatic power sense as as now and you might be able to make a case case. It's because of the way. The conditions developed in one of the conditions is all these men that might otherwise assume. This role are gone. And if Philip the second and Alexander the greats memory emory confers power on the people leftover in the family and those people are women. Were you see a unique opportunity for these women to figure out a tool. Use that power. You're after Alexander dies you have a a mass rush of all these various Macedonian royal clans marrying into each other for diplomatic purposes right covering in their ass hedging their bets. This is A. It's a dangerous time right which of these successors might win what what might happen to us. Who are we said? Well what if you support the wrong guy for the boss of bosses and then afterwards the other guy. They're they're going to remember that right. Elizabeth Carney called this period. The brisk post Alexander Elite Macedonian marriage market which I thought was interesting now the reason it concerns us though is there's a couple of these potential marriage partners from the royal clan. Dan Who are game changers right. They could end this story of who gets to succeed Alexander Right now right. There doesn't have to be the equivalent of an ancient world war for forty before forty-five years to settle it. We could sell it right now. You know in three twenty two or something Year after Alexander will settle it right now all you gotta do is have one of these crabs in a bucket successor. Warlords has to just get the edge and it's all over and it's GonNa be a pretty good edge because the other crabs in a bucket will pull you down if if you just get a slight slight bit more power than they. Have you got to win the game. You gotta hit the Jackpot at this is like a murderous version of the BACHELORETTE. You've got to get the a hand of the bride that can confer legitimacy on you. WHO's out there? That could do that and think about how. How much power that gives? The person who can do that were there are multiple potential people who could marry into into one of these successors clans and get them closer to the royal house but there is almost a hierarchy right. This person will get you this close to the royal house but this person person will get you two steps closer to the Royal House. You WanNa get the Jackpot. You GotTa Mary Alexander. The great sister don't you. He's only got one full blooded sibling Cleopatra. The one who married her uncle who's gone off and died in Italy now leaving her a widow boom here she is available the Bachelorette and and of course Olympias and her daughter Cleopatra Work as a team here sort of so. It's the Olympia. Cleopatra Limited partnership here and they desperately need to utilize utilized this power of of having the ability to confer upon you a spouse and then of course subsequent children whose father her was Philip. The second whose brother was Alexander. The great whose mother is Olympia. I mean come on that. Is Your Game Changer right there you WANNA be. The crab crawls out of the bucket you Mary Cleopatra and she knows it but this power also makes her dangerous to others. I mean if you happen to be the successor warlord. who gets her hand in marriage will fantastic for you do but what does that mean for? All your competitors all the warlords who didn't get her hand in marriage so over her over her lifetime she's going to either either court or be courted by many of the major players in this story. All the bigwigs are going to try to get her hand in marriage. She's the obvious prize here. But if you can't have her hand in marriage she's the obvious target to at least you have to block her. 'cause she's another one of those people that you can't just kill sometimes you just want to kill these people if you're one of these successors but there are certain people that have sort of a cloak of invincibility around the minutes. The ghosts protecting them Philip. The second and Alexander you go off and kill them. Your troops might kill you now..

"Was this sort of a gala dinner. We claim the leader. It was a much more down to earth. Sort of leadership by comparison and Cassandra is supposed to have seen the Persians. Doing this in front of Alexander Zander to Alexander and laughing at it or making fun of it and in the story Alexander and this is a sign probably of the MEGLOMANIAC but maybe he would have done this back in the old days Alexander Graham by the hair and starts smashing his head against the wall. Scaring Cassandra so badly that we're told told. I think it was plutarch. Who said that decades later? Long after Alexander's dead and gone. A CASSANDRA couldn't even pass a statue of the man without going weak in the knees and I think plutarch said taking quite a while to recover. Cassandra was hardly the only person though scared at this time Alexander had everybody on edge. It's like the Third Reich at the end or I mean all these rulers get a little unstable at the end and they see plots everywhere There are a lot of people who may at this time. I thought that it was worth taking a chance on trying to get rid of Alexander. Because if you didn't get rid of him he was likely to get rid of you. And CASSANDRA here's one of people implicated as a potential participant in Alexander's death. By the way not only is antithesis. Oldest son Cassandra here CA sanders brother. Another son of antipathy is Alexander's cup bearer. The one who just to make sure that this Cup does not get out of my hands ends and nobody spikes it with anything. That guy is anticipators other son now the only time you care about the the ancestry of Kings Cup bearer. It's a little like an offensive lineman in football. You only care about their name. Apparently when something goes wrong with the only time the poor cup bearer gets mentioned is when something goes wrong or depending on you know what the Cup bears involved with and who they're involved with when something goes right on June tenth June eleven three twenty three B C e a thirty two year old Alexander. The great dies is and no one to this day can say definitively why theories his abound in all directions from the natural to the unnatural from the common sense and obvious to the wild guy had a lot of reasons reasons he might have died though and disease is an obvious. One in medical professionals have been looking and examining the the evidence from hundreds of years later that writers have kept about this kind of stuff and they I will proclaim definitively it was just disease not disease and I've heard everything typhus cholera malaria. West Nile virus. All of it. Then there's the sort of common sense once you can look at it and go. This guy was a major war wounds. That probably began to take its toll. the drinking is a long term arm and a chronic and still at very high levels. I mean that will take a toll mixing it all together could be accumulation things we can his immune system in the West West Nile. Virus gets him revenge of the Persian empire through the mosquito but there has always been a tradition tradition modern and ancient included by most of the sources that Alexander was assassinated. Poisoned that Cassandra brought the poison that the cup bearer son of antipathy feted Alexander that the poison might have been mixed by Aristotle. Donald himself appalled by Alexander's descend into tyrannical madness. And that maybe CASSANDRA's job wasn't to go there and plead for his dad's job in life but to assess Alexander's Sanity and willingness to be reasonable. Because remember antipathy and those people are all back in in Greece getting letters and hearing stories. But maybe you send your son say get a look for yourself. And if he's not reasonable take him out. Olympias certainly thinks antipathy and company did it and she will eventually proclaim this publicly. And you have to be careful because because the propaganda from this period following Alexander's death is heavy duty and it comes from all sides so saying he killed. Alexander would be a huge propaganda and a tool but you can tell by the way it helps take something you know. There was always a lot of gasoline. Soaked would in the Olympia Olympias anticipated relationship. This is when it turns into a vendetta. A real clan blood feud between The official name. For the the antipathy treads which are the family of antipathy but think about it like Oh you know the Gambino Bonano's the antipathy rids and and Olympia says clan which includes two distinct one's really her clan back home remember she's she's May become the regent of her homeland during this time period because rapport brother who married. Cleopatra Alexander's sister gets himself killed in a war in Italy and apparently the kids are too young. So Cleopatra or Olympia Olympia or both or maybe running the show back in the old pirate's Malaysian homeland and now with pretty much. No male family members around to succeed. She's kind of the front and center face of the Royal Family back in Macadamia or what was the royal family. And this is where you just get the feeling that All the people around Alexander are feeling really bad that he didn't take that good advice. Mary one woman. Or what the hacking take a page out of his dad's playbook and Mary to make sure one of them's a full blooded Macedonian Get a few kids going before you leave you for your expedition in Asia. By the time you die here in three twenty three. VCE At thirty to thirty two right You'd have a couple of kids kids back in Macedonia. If you get lucky an air maybe twelve years old. Maybe thirteen years old by this time. I didn't do the math now. We all know how the macaroni history goes. Does the likelihood of a child you know. Having the throne kept long enough for them to succeed. is a long shot and Macadamia but the older. You are the better the chance you'll make it and let's be honest. And he kid of Alexander is going to have a blood line. That's incompatible right. So maybe that's get out of jail free card from Typical magazine history. The son of Alexander Grant Philip the second. And let's be honest. You know who will be there guarding you until she dies of old age or something else Olympia. Yes because the interest with Alexander's heir will line up with his mother. The same way that Alexander's interested when this will be the role she'll play for for the rest of her life. The Guardian of the air but if Alexander seven years back in Macedonia before he left for Asia. What am I talking about? Well there's not much There is a a non official wife so Mr. She's often called in. The child's often called the illegitimate son of Alexander. His name is Harry Kallis. He's three or four years old by by this time. And he's off somewhere like bacteria which is monthly modern Afghanistan or a real real real upper part purge. He's a long way away and his mother's barbarian for goodness the sake or at least the Macedonians would think so or at least half barbarian in any way. This kid does not get anywhere near the attention you would think he would get until powerbrokers feel like they can use use him then he all of a sudden I guess in some sources appears on the scene. I've read some historians who questioned whether he really existed at all But there is something real that everyone can point to Alexander's got an official wife in Persia and she's pregnant when Alexander dives she apparently quickly kills Alexander's otherwise keeping. The bloodline pure. The Macedonians inversions. Both are into that sometimes. But if you're worried about a thirteen or fourteen or twelve year old air back in macaroni. The one he didn't have surviving surviving long enough to get to the throne. What chance does a kid who isn't even born yet have what's more it could be? A female might not make it to term. This is the ancient world after all the bottom line. Though is that there's no logical easy answer to what do we do now. Once Alexander Alexander Dies and if you think about it it's it's really kind of a crazy moment history. These are always my favorite things in naturally. There's never enough information. Did it really go down the way most of the sources kinda say it went down. which is that when Alexander died? There is no plan as we said he supposed to the story. He says that when he's asked on his deathbed to whom he leaves the empire you know if you're basically an emperor Alexander who's the next emperor and he says to the strong guest very macho chill macaroni and homeric answer may be something you could justify. A Darwinian may the best man win kind of competition for the throne but disastrous for his people. When you're talking about this as a successor to the entire policy right why don't you fight it out and we'll see? That's that's GONNA lead to more deaths from macaroni soldiers than Philip and Alexander's wars put together. The Macedonian infantry didn't suffer terribly as you might think because they were so victorious and so dominant and I had a professor once that said if you WANNA know the way to defeat the best army in any age in history split it up and make it fight itself. He saw that in Roman history by the way the nastiest most dangerous opponents the legionary ever faced were other legionary and civil wars That's what's going to happen in the next y this is crazy even say over the next forty four or forty five years. That's how long it will take for the to the strongest best thing to be settled there known as the war of the Alexandrian successors of the wars of the successors of the wars of the diabetic. diatoms kyw that's the Greek word for successors. The rest of Olympia has life by the way we'll be spent as a player in this geopolitical struggle that that will happen in phases. It's not like forty four forty five years of continual war there there'll be multiple phases that happen and there's so many players it is to me anyway. Easily the most complicated struggle in the ancient world it is very tough to keep track of as they say in sports. Players without a scorecard and dizzying array of personalities is nowadays a very weird Crabs in a bucket type dynamic where the most august just scary and impressive. People are eliminated early because everyone who's less competent less impressive bands together to take him down. Olympias will be one of those people by the way she is a very scary player in the early phases of this. So she's gotten rid of as quickly as is anybody can do it. But she's very hard to deal with because she represents ghosts impressive. Ghosts the power of Olympia which stemmed from her relationship to Philip for awhile. And then from her relationship to Alexander after that will will now stem from the power that those former figures still possess it will it will flow through her. I think about her like this priestess but now the authorioty and Gravitas and reputation of Philip and Alexander combined are emanating through her any defects. The infantry of Alexander's. Here's army. Let me explain when Alexandra dies. The story is that Everybody Kinda looks at each other..

"If it did happen. What was going on there was it? Some outbreak of you know like raging hormones and jealousy and all this sort of stuff from one wife to another the real soap opera stuff or you stole my husband. I'm GonNa get you know Elizabeth Carney points out that these are high Falutin. Diplomatic Marriage is is With kings go out and sleep with anyone they want. I mean this is not a question of of sexuality and all that especially probably not by Her Age in the ancient world world. This is about power and in some cases about personal security and those two things are related. And the way you know this. This is that had cleopatra. You Know Phillips last wife Gotten to Olympia Sanal Alexander. I The shoe very well could have been on the other foot. Elizabeth Kearney says says that this very likely was do unto others before they did unto US thing you hit their family atlas family before they get you do athletes of course the uncle of Cleopatra and he dies two one of the things That Carney points out though. Who is that people? Die A lot in these macaroni. Empower transitions as we said. And by the standards of the time and place this may have been a relatively lightweight purge right merciful purge. This side of the Family Cleopatra was always going to get cut off any of her offspring were to it is unusual of it won't be as unusual after this time period for one woman to be eliminating another woman and a female child likely female child Europa that that's unusual but at these were Macedonian mails it would have been real politique in typical Macedonian stuff because it's a female. It's blamed on jealousy and whatnot but Elizabeth Kearney Arne says and she seems to come down if I'm reading right on the on the idea that it did happen but it happened for the same kind of calculating she says it was always a very calculating person that it comes down to the same sort of calculation that Philip himself husband now in the ground would have made hardcore real list and she got Cleopatra and the Atlas side of the family before they got her and her son. And how it actually happened is once again the debatable stuff I mean did she carry Gary Out. The killings herself d'Ici order them. How was it done a much later? Unreliable source famously. Says that she had The wife of Philip and the infant or infants dragged over eight a heap of burning coals like a giant barbecue mccue which again colors historical reputation whether or not she did that. The killing of the infant to is very hard for for everyone and Elizabeth. Carney goes into that quite a bit and how that would have been perceived during the time period and all this kind of stuff. Carney rights that other than the novelty of the woman on woman and violence It might not have rattled people that much and she writes quote. Several factors indicate that contemporaries were not particularly surprised prized or bothered by olympias actions. The mere absence of the incident for most accounts is suggestive. It was not an attention. grabber unlike other acts of violence committed by Alexander or Olympias the sources do not mention the Mcginn at least in terms of Olympia dynastic. Murders were a dime A. It doesn't before and after these particular deaths and some of those murdered were children Phillips mother had been accused albeit almost certainly unjustly of dynastic murderers one suspects. She writes that many thought that Adolescent Cleopatra could hardly have expected anything else wants. Philip was dead. They had committed themselves to what proved to be the losing side in a dynastic struggle and past rains demonstrated what happened to those those who made such a poor choice and to quote she goes on to theorize that it's possible that the death was by hanging hanging Reasons for which we will describe later but like a self hanging like suicide where you know. They put up a rope or they hand The former bride Philip a rope and sort of suggest The same way roam in the night of the long knives in Nazi Germany. He was supposed to have been given such a choice here. You go do what you know you have to do kind of thing and no real word on what happened to the infant. Another one of the unreliable ancient sources says that Olympias killed the infants. Infront of and there were two in that story. I think killed the infants in front of the mother and then she either died when she saw that out of grief or whatever or killed herself after that you can see why Olympia get get such a fearsome rap historically speaking the next year and a half or so of what's going on in their lives is is going to be Alexander putting together Humpty dumpty again his father's creation which was held together in a rickety sort of sense with a bunch the people who didn't want to be involved in this Asian expedition under macaroni leadership. What were they gonNA do right? Combination Phillips energy his genius and later in life life is Gravitas and let's be honest backed by the best army around kept everybody in line and when he died all those people who would have liked to have seen him dead whether or not what. They paid the bill for the murder. Inc Tab you know took the opportunity to throw off the Macedonian yoke and the next year and a half or so as Alexander trying to put the yolk back in Humpty. Now I'm a fan of Alexander and many of these details. I'm going to leave out here. We'll be in that eventual show. Whenever the Hell I do it but let's not ignore the fact that Alexander doesn't just inherent the Great Army of its day which you know anybody could probably do pretty well with He also inherits. It's the leadership of that army. We'd said earlier that he was like Jenga's Khan and a policeman. He had the great set of marshals and generals around him they really fall into two major groups. Let's call them because other people have the old guard and the new guard the old guard. Our dads generals atlas was one of those guys. There's is a bunch of them and they're all famous and they're good and they are hard bitten and they're old by this time remember. This is not young by today's age standards. This is is a world where these ages are quite a bit older than they are today. these guys are in their fifties and sixties. Think of how much fighting already done and think about how they they came the time before. All this glitz would macaroni was ruling. This whole part of the World Alexander was born into that world right. I wonder how they felt about the twenty ruled vendor canned right especially especially before he was proven as anything of underpinned. Not just that. These guys are not like the modern generals in the military his job it is to salute salute like robots do what they're told by their superior you know we we said these are like bosses of other crime family now they may listen to the boss of bosses right now but at the situation were to turn against their interests that could change. These are barons. That's a better way to look at them. Guys like Atlas or Barons and the king has their allegiance for now. Alexander has the help of one of these really formidable guys who's probably in his sixties by this time. A guy named antipathy antipathy we're supposed to have sided with Alexander during the transition of power when things might have been kinda hairy and then all of a sudden he has one of these great barons backing him and the other great barons are away. You know there's an temperatures kind of friends of the family. He's he's loyal to fill up and he shows that loyalty by helping Phillips on and Olympia. They were supposed to be On good terms initially three the reason for bringing antipathies name into all this though is that they're not going to be on good terms for long. This is going to turn out to be probably the most negative personal relationship in Olympia says life in terms of consequences. The reason things go south between she and antipathy are often tied to Alexander leaving along with a giant chunk of the army most of the mercenaries and a lot of Greek allies when he launches his dad's mission his dad's plan for an invasion of Asia himself with his DAD's army throws a spear when he's disembarking from the boat onto the Asian side into the sand calls the entire area spear one territory territory. And we're off to be dealt with later in the inevitable Alexander show. This will continue by the way for ten to eleven seven years as Alexander continues until his army makes him stop an army who adored him and saw him as almost a god king and finally said we can't go any farther we have snakes and elephants and monsoons and we don't even remember what home looks like in her arms. Falling Office can stop now and Alexander basically called a bunch of ingrates. What do you want? Meanwhile a antipathy and his mother are both in Macedonia antipathies. The Guy who Alexander Pick to run the show. When I'm gone somebody has to hold down? The fort temperature gets the job friend of the family. If you gotTa pick one of these unreliable Macedonian barons this guy looks like the most reliable right this. This family has been the the most reliable to me the boss of bosses. I'll put you in charge antipathy. He doesn't really have. It seems like an official position for his mother. But do you think Olympia is just GonNa sit there and say nothing a lot of wise probably would but this is why she makes the history books. 'cause she she doesn't say nothing. She says a lot of stuff and antipathy. There's gotta deal with Alexander's mom probably not used to dealing with women like this at all. Who Get up in your grill and questioned some of the things you do? The funny part about it is. You can't really believe any of the letters that the Alexander Romance some of these sources have that supposedly show correspondents but you can see. There was correspondence to Alexander from both of those people complaining about each other so his mom would write letters to Alexander. When he's off in Asia saying anticipators exceedingly authorities acting like a king is in danger of becoming a monarch himself and all these complaining complaining complaining and antithesis ready to Alexander complaining about his mom and the interference and she's you know she's Exceeding Authority and getting involved in things. She shouldn't speaking of getting involved in things she probably shouldn't one of the stories about mother and son Olympias and Alexander that always makes the rounds as evidence someone points out of the Mama's boy. Edible Complex Complex version or view of Alexander has to do with worries over Alexander's Sexuality as he gets older. Now the reason this comes into play at this point in the stories stories because before this great invasion of Asia this king. WHO's been a king you know year and a half something like that almost two years? He has no wife and he has no air and his generals barrels are telling them listen to it would be released smart. You're going to be at the tip of the spear here fighting lots of battles in this big country You'd have an air and Alexander shows no real enthusiasm for this and the story. is famous of Alexander's Mother. A hiring him a the saline courtesan Thessaloniki in northern Greece. And of course of course a prostitute all in this day and age these might have been people assume status and wealth and standing to specially. If you're getting one four a prints. It's Peter Green. Writes quote both he meaning Philip Alexander's Dad. Both he and Olympia according to theophrastos. St's were worried by among other things the boys lack of heterosexual interests. They feared. He might be turning out a girlish invert and even went so far as to procure a beautiful courtesan named Calix Zenia. I believe it is to help. Develop his manly nature. Church Olympias herself. We are told frequently begged him to have intercourse with this woman which does not suggest any great enthusiasm on his part but then what what son would take kindly to a maternally selected mistress and quote.

"I want to give him credit for something though because one thing he did has stayed with me ever since. I actually can't get it out of my mind. I have to confess to it right now. I didn't like his casting Found out He made the most. Maybe the most interesting character in the story. Val kilmer is Philip. The second come on but Alexander's mother other is played by Angelina. Jolie and I didn't like the casting and then I saw her and now I can't unsee it. I think she's perfect at least you know. Everybody's got their image. My image of the of. Oh this person. First of all I don't know if it's the makeup or just how Jolie looks or some combination of the two boyish. She looks like my image of what a person in the northern Greek southern Albania area of piracy would look like. She looks the part to me and at the time she did the movie she really seems to be of that age that the most of Olympia says story seems to happen in where she's not a young lady anymore and she's not an older lady anymore it's that middle range but she's still commands ends attention in a physical sense and there's a lot of reasons for it it might not have just been conventional beauty. I mean the woman's supposed to carried snakes around whether whether or not that's true true that'll make an impression right. The stories are wonderful and watching Elizabeth Carney tried to make sense of what's real and what's not in. The stories is fascinating fascinating. The one thing she does say those the snakes were probably probably real so we should back up and talk about the snakes and make sense of all this story for minute. Olympias ends up marrying. This says why she's famous right. She marries the up and coming soon to be greatest man of her age in her world. The Guy who would have been Alexander. The great had he not died. He's one of these kings that actually is maybe like the best example. you will ever see who builds up everything necessary for some great endeavor. DOC is before he can carry it out hands over the you know the the car all gassed up and ready to go to his son. Who then gets does it and gets credit for it Philip the second the guy that set up the invasion of Persia he actually had a beachhead established in Persian territory. When he died Alexander grabbed the keys to the car and conquered conquered in a half the known world with it he was using basically the German Vermont to nineteen forty right before the whole Russian problem? it was the the greatest army of its time with a host of generals and marshals to help him out ready and tutors right away and this group was in my top five of greatest assembly of generals and marshals and and over the top military figures under a single great visionary leader. You will ever see gingas Kahn had a great great group of generals Napoleon had I mean it's ever. has there ever been a better assembly of larger than life marshals in general that Napoleon's general staff people And then you have Alexander in Alexander's father and all these figures who are not only going to play huge roles after after his death and start whole kingdoms and dynasties of their own. But they're all these. I mean right out of central casting I mean take antagonise. Hey Guinness Model Thumb Lewis and taking this one. I got one I. He's he's looks like they always portray him like this giant sort of bearded the Greeks in Athens and Sparta. Looked at the the people up in Macadamia like they were kind of barbarians and the funny part about it is it's a sliding sliding scale because the Macedonians were always trying to import all these Greek scholars and teachers an artwork in and all the stuff to try to gussie themselves up a little and and buff up their image with those those cultured southern Greeks who might be little sniffy effeminate but whatever The macaroni is removing up in the world. During this time period trying to point out to the other Greeks Hey. We're one of you issue in the Olympics Olympics two and Philip was allowed that Early on that's why Olympias might have been named Olympia but if the macaroni were trying to not look so barbaric. They looked at the people. EEP Aware Olympia says families from as as the Weirdos one hundred fifty miles away. That's part of the fun by the way of the ancient period is also localized. Sometimes one of my favorite periods in Roman histories really early on when Rome was a small city state. And it's having a war with another other city state and that city states eleven miles away. I mean in your big cities. Now that's like fighting with your suburbs. But I love the locality of it macadamia Macadamia and a pirate. Which is where Olympia from only about one hundred fifty miles away over the mountains though in piracy's a place ace and it's funny how you can have this right. Where the Macedonians are a little leery of Elizabeth? Carney quotes some of the ancient stereotypes. And says you know they thought of the pirates as poisoners and casters of spells. Now part of what makes this Olympia Story Interesting and this is the see. This is my my own. Take on it I I try. I've I've never forgotten an experiment that a teacher did with us back when I was first starting as a history major and it was just the first step in. What would if you carried it all the way to a PhD? Someday be a long line of trying to get you to purge your period now from how you see other periods. 'cause it's this huge challenge right. How do you objectively look at the past? When you've got all these cultural influences influencing you and to make it more complicated? Many of the historians reading had their cultural influences working on them. mm-hmm as of this teacher said let's imagine something for a second. Let's imagine that instead of like Newtonian laws of physics that we all take for granted and we know parts Rue right you substitute magic.
