"This but he was what donald trump wanted talk. He it'll be dropping after the election so but anyway go ahead He he was very good at bringing people together and making deals and he said i can't make this happen. It just won't work. People aren't going to get behind a huge bond issue while all this money is still on the astrodome. So that was that was the that was when it became clear to me that this thing was going nowhere and yesterday they were going to lead on of course now. We had all prophets of doom saying. Well it'll be forever before houston gets another. Nfl years Many years was at i. Five four five. Something like i think. That's right yeah but And at that point The the the jig was up. That was all that was That that was all that could be done. That was going to be done. And so now we start getting these visuals bud shutting off to nashville and and putting his deal there in place so they They did their deal. The oilers were supposed to play in houston three more years while the stadium was being built in nashville and that turned out in the first year to be every bit the disaster you might have predicted welcoming. It's become a lame duck thing right. My understanding is that with the end of the ninety five seen as we ninety five seasons when it was announced but when was it in the air was it was a before then or was it really a surprise in at when the announcement came in and of the ninety five six. I think it came into focus for people and ninety five. Yeah and so. They're supposed to play three more years and ninety six They had crowds not every game but some games of fewer than thirty thousand fans. I mean you know. This is football country. That was unheard of good team and gm whatever People were just a past the anger stage. It was. we don't care anymore. They've decided to go so we're sort of writing them out his spree at least out of our current context and so the league stepped in and got everybody together and they decided that. Go to memphis because there is a suitable stadium there and play for two years there until the stadium was ready for. That's what happens in the fans in memphis didn't like that either because they knew they were the a situation there too they were just a temporary waystation right and that too i just so how about jeff fisher the coach at the time right he. I think it's lost on all of us in this. Is this fisher. Obviously a big a character in where the The now titans sort of came into being but fisher was the coach of this thing. Ninety five and ninety six. I mean he must have and frankly brought them back to a little bit of respectability but how does he and his staff and the players have handled all this. Because we're talking about a very Traumatic kind of period of time. The last year's in houston the the couple of years in memphis while the nashville things sort of plays out and then ultimately trying to domicile in nashville. That could not have been helpful or or easy in in this process. Either no fisher. Fisher was a good man. He'd he handled it professionally and even stoically. He just kept his mouth shut. He took his lumps. They did the best he could with what he had. And i think it's fortunate he was rewarded by getting to stay on. He had been on staff. He'd been secondary coach before he was promoted to head coach. So he he been around. He knew where the bodies were buried. He knew the personalities involved and he just Just bit his. His lip is on in and and kept his head down and handled it. All is well as anyone could have. Thanks so it was good that he got to have a taste of success. After i finally got smash so as the team is overstaying. It's welcome i guess. Ninety five ninety six and the team sort of Fumbles its way into tennessee. And then ultimately to to nashville by ninety nine so give me a sense of was there any feeling of abandonment by the fans and or the sports media there and houston or was it kind of good riddance and i guess. The the the kicker of that question is what were the houston fans and maybe even the sports media feeling once the titans in their first year in nashville when all the super bowl. Was there. Sort of indignation where those with certain closet rooting for the team or was it. Was it pretty much a clean break. Because you know you had your chance and you you left us. And we don't really care how you're doing going forward like i guess. The lingering fandom is there was there is there still any During that process of leaving and then ultimately where they've been living for years since well a there's always gonna be some nostalgia. I mean i the years. I still occasionally get an email now then from somebody who said i just reread your book. It's always going to be a few. But i would say houston process the oilers leaving and ninety five well really and ninety five. There was there was anger that there was righteous indignation and there was some and it wasn't all directed but out. There were the diehard fans. Love the thought that the city and the mayor should have done whatever was necessary to keep the team and used so all that was processed by ninety six. The deal was done. He signed his contract in nashville. And so it's it was. Let's move on and that's what you said he did it. Was you know whatever whatever thought there was put into crowfoot all in houston back then was what are we gonna do to get an intake. And i don't remember just when but you know. Discussion started about a new stadium You could do a new stadium even with money owed on the astrodome. If bud wasn't going to get the benefit because he had been the guy who Who did the shake now. So by the time the tennessee titans went to the super bowl. I know that houston really noticed. It was it was though the The seattle seahawks non to the super bowl. I that's that's my recollection going back. Close.

"An army to get him to get him on the ground but for sure and and all the the video shows it right. I mean and it's also even more interesting. I did to clarify. He was Earl was the mvp of the league and seventy nine but he was offensive player of the year. For seventy eight seventy nine and eighty and he was. He was also the offensive rookie of the year. At seventy people. Sort of forget that Earl made this splash coming right out of college right which is certainly possible. But it's not always the easiest thing making that transition from the collegiate game to the pro game right. Yeah he was that good He didn't he didn't miss a beat. He was as dominant force in in the pros as he had been in college. Yes that is. That's very rare. Well so tell me about the love. Love your blue thing right. Because i'm i'm just really curious about how the fans sort of took to this right i. It's interesting in my research. And i knew enough. I mean i certainly remember the that original houston oilers number one song which i think by the way we'll will have embedded in our episode. Once we drop this. But i think on a per capita basis the houston oilers may have had more official and unofficial theme songs in their career than just about any team that we've explored. This far would.

"Houston and frankly people in texas in the afc The afc or the the current of see whatever and the old afl for that matter What a what a story this was. And frankly in many respects kind of continues to be the legacy of very much lives on the the colors and the The the logo the name and of course the history. And we're going to get into the story of the houston oilers this week. With our special. Guest ed fowler. The reverend ed fowler retired but still actually a real honest to goodness anglican church minister slash. Reverend ed fowler is an interesting part of the story here to We'll sort of get into that Interesting career change. And what was ed. Prior to his higher calling shall we say he was a longtime sportswriter. Yeah lies largely in the the houston metropolitan area with the houston chronicle but before that Places like the austin american statesman the kansas city star the chicago daily news here closer to us or what used to be closer to us back in the day when new newspapers were thing and sports writing in those newspapers were more than the thing they were probably frankly The sort of unwritten reason. Why a lot of people actually subscribe because the sports section was Not only journalism but also Diversion from The The distractions of of crazier world in the earlier. Sections produce paper but ed fowler as an interesting story himself but also the topic at hand that we're going to get into. We're going to use him and his Book that came out in the late seventies late nineties. Yeah i go. There was nineteen ninety-seven in particular And this is how we sort of discovered in an and got in contact with ed. The book is called. Loser takes all but adams key part part of the story for sure but adams bad football and big business. It's really the story of the houston oilers and sort of how it came and a mesli went and and our conversation this week with fowler gets into the story of the book the story of the oilers and as you can imagine we we try to tackle the attended. Yes pun intended All of those issues relating to The ops and certainly there were a number of them But largely downs especially on the way out of the The houston oilers. Now of course Represented in reconstituted form as the tennessee. Titans and yes. We talk about the tennessee oilers for a couple years again that messy departure from houston and at last check. Not a whole lot of oil in anywhere in the state of tennessee. But now that didn't stop the team for still being called the tennessee oilers for a couple of years before they Firmly and Officially domiciled themselves in nashville Two years many forget were a prior to that in tennessee in memphis at the liberty bowl. That's where they were known as the tennessee oilers. In before becoming the titans are all part of the the lower and the legacy and the very interesting stories. A related to that and The clip at the beginning kind of gives a sort of a hand. It certainly is debatable. As to win the era in the late seventies kind of started It is known without Conjecture however as the let's call it the love ya blue era. This is around the time. The nineteen seventy eight seventy nine eighty or so when the houston oilers were probably amongst The hottest if not in cer- certain areas of nfl football the hottest team going with an amazing array of stars including one Hot rookie by the name of earl campbell. Phenomenon really is an understatement. I guess not only in houston but in the nfl itself and it took a little while to kinda of geel into what actually became a trademark phenomenon. Literally called love your blue. but most scholars Would kinda circle around november twentieth nineteen seventy eight and the monday night football game that you just heard a little clip from the intro to frank gifford and howard cosell dan where the The oilers were hosting a nationally. Televised game against the miami dolphins and Was sort of a sort of a burst of of energy and color and noise That absolutely came across on the on the broadcast the poms waving everywhere and a hell of a game and actually many people think that is perhaps one of the best monday night. Football games of all time that game when the oilers One a very entertaining game. It's it's all there on youtube behind earl campbell. Almost two hundred rushing yards. I want to say he had one hundred ninety nine actually four touchdowns he ran for and the oilers one out and a thirty five to thirty Victory certainly others might look at some later games. But this was a national sort of shot across the bow so to speak and there's a lot of of of energy and end up going on there i some would also Frankly suggests that the next year December i think december tenth to Nineteen seventy nine to ninety seven about a year. Later was when sort of the love. You blew sort of trademark era. I guess sort of occurred but regardless of when you think it was also another monday night. Football game by the way. I regardless of how you sort of circle around it if you were there at the time and or you were just an nfl fan at the time. Paying attention is probably Burn in your memory. What this love. Your blue phenomenon was and it was absolutely ahead of time. Arguably the apex of the of the excitement that was this is franchise. Plenty of of of nadir's of course Along the way. But you have to remember that the afl when it was started the houston. Oilers were one of the franchises that helped launch that leak and we get into one of the chief protagonists. maybe actually antagonists as we get into Into the guy but adams for sure Was there at the beginning. And they're through the entirety of this team as well as how it went to to To tennessee ultimately He is The good guy certainly in the beginning years for sure Winning to afl championships early on And kind of making a mark for pro football in houston when there was none prior Certainly got got gets all the accolades. I guess around. I love you. Blue air for sure. But look he was also very enmeshed and hands-on shall we say to a fault for the majority of the years otherwise and I would argue that. Essentially not unlike the title of fowler's book The experience of being an oilers fan was largely. I wouldn't say necessarily lamentable but certainly heartbreaking and disappointing especially when They were tantalisingly close to simplisafe. Gloria that Frankly sort of alluded them not only in the love blue era but certainly thereafter as. Well we get into all of that. The houston oilers our first tackling of the topic with our guest this week. The reverend ed fowler and we look forward to presenting it to you in mere moments before we get there. Vaughan Shanks Pitches the Cydarm Soc Incident Management Platform

"So it is a case management platform it's a web APP. It's typically deployed into a security operation center and it just helps you keep track of all of the activities that people working on. So this is like highs management software essentially for specifically for talk is that right? Exactly, it's case management for security operations. Okay. What sort of things do you use the software to do like about doing real deep deep dives on incidents because a lot of the time when we think of like response software, we think forensic. So whatever this isn't really that isn't no this is. An ailing people to collaborate better and a K pot of that. We noticed that often the way the white people do security operations using generic ticketing systems, and there are pine to us. They require extensive customization to do anything close to. What we would be regarded as best practice and You know the the data entry is often a complaint pine I'm so we've aimed to make an experience that's really easy to use and is already set up to security operations. I can sorry this is really designed to replace like Jira in the sock. Yes. We we do often generic atheist platforms and yet this is a big step up from that. Okay. In what sense right? So if I upgrade from a generic ticketing platform and I get myself side on what is getting me that those platforms I'm can't give me so. We have a built in workflow that is based off the computer security incident handling God from this. In fact, we steal all of our best moves from the computer security instant handling God. It's the best advice. We could find a way not to tell people how to do their job we just by us, but best practice as out as out benchmark Yep. So you steal the workflows and create some yeah krantz. Can Software? I haven't spoken to anyone about this but I think you know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and I think would probably be glad to know that someone out there is hitting their advice. Yeah. Well, I mean I think they put out this advice so that people like you will do things like this. Can you give us an example of like A typical sort of incident that's commonly handled through this platform and what the collaboration component looks like. Right? Because I'm thinking what sort of collaboration do you really need outside the Salk? Why? Why do you need a you know an actual platform to handle that So what we've is that many of our customers not only have internal tailfin if it's small internal team, I'm thinking they might have managed service provider that that gives them out of our support and depending on the nitrogen incident if something escalates and and there's people involved and there's conjecture about insider threats or other sensitive data coming out of the system, you don't necessarily want all of that data to be available to everyone who's who's collaborating, but you still need to have a tight look you need to be able to collaborate without much hassle so. We've we've used I access control to enable collaboration. Okay. So this is this allows for the discussion of sensitive incidence because quite often. In the case of a major incident, people will spin up their own slack. That's sort of the way that the. Slack specific to that incident but this is more for the work. Day. Incidence. The incidents of all shapes and sizes and can I say I very careful using slack for incident response it does still local copies of your information on every device that is logging into that channel. So that is why to make sure your sensitive response dieters scattered around many many. It's a good way to make sure your sensitive daughter is in as many places as humanly. Possible. Exactly, and certainly, those baynes among some instances of wears slack has slack as a useful vector for an attacker if you WANNA move laterally. Maybe. Having a rummage through someone's slack files is probably a good way to start getting ideas about. Passwords or other things you could connect to yeah. Yeah. Yes I think slack for incident response is you know it's a default it's a default option people use because it's it's easy and it's got a nice user experience. So the question we ask you what if you could take over the rig of a case management platform which sounds very serious. But make it as easy to use as something like slack. Do you actually have a chat function in the in the platform? Not really a chat function. It looks a little more like like using a conversation in twitter old Lincoln it's more like a threat in that sense. Yeah. That makes a Lotta sense right? So it's Malaysia DMZ but everything would be cataloged logged and it's it's it's sort of like sounds a little bit more serious than slack but a little less serious than. Help me out. Then what? Out To. Throw too many vandals under the bus. But there there is some some shockers out there just just stuff like. Why are you recording notes in notepad? All will case management system is is kind of awful. I only use it once a day from force to.

After 87 years, Washington's NFL team changed in two months

"World turned upside down on its head with the announcement that the Redskins after what a century have decided to Finally change their name and Ah ah image and likeness and you know a lot lot into the store because still a lot of the decisions that have to be made. Let's head out to the wait for Dotcom hotline. We're joined by then. Fisher covers the NFL and Olympics for Sports business daily. You can follow Ben on Twitter at Ben Fisher s V. J. Ben will appreciate time and thanks for spending a few minutes with us here in Atlanta this evening. Have you be there? Anytime. So then let's talk a little bit about this decision. Do you think You know, part of the You know, whatever the internal review and things like that, that they had a pretty good idea that they were going to change the name. Do you think that they probably hired a firm? To already start to put the wheels in motion of coming up with new name, new image and things like that. Well, somewhat surprisingly, I don't believe they have That there's an obvious question the sort of thing you'd almost always bring in 1/3 party, um, agency or since consultants. But it appears by all accounts to be a very narrow circle there. Dan Snyder and a couple other people and not many others. Um, I guess makes a certain amount of sense because they know the more people you bring him more likely than a leak conceit. That's about but I'm not sure they actually have gone through a lot of those traditional steps. You would expect that of somebody doing a big rebranding. How much do you think if you just had to even kind of estimate? How many millions of dollars are we talking about from? I don't know. Hiring a marketing or PR firm to help with You know, with all of this, plus the actual creation of a name and logo and, you know, obviously will be merchandising and all that kind of stuff. What kind of money do you think A team gets into when when this kind of process takes place? What? Um I'd say all in and the big cost there, I think would really actually be the the lost merchandise and the things that you've already created, Or you like to be the Mari created there now useless. Um So I mean, I'd say 30 million. Mark is finished. I mean, that's a very uninformed guests. You know, I have to check a lot of things for that Sounds right time. You got your professional thieves, illegal fees. He spent a lot of time in court. Even if no one really fights trademarking, gotta go the European Union and get those trademarks and all sorts of things you and I probably would never consider And then you know you've got what do you think of all the products in this world business cards, Coffee, moans of sign anywhere that has a Redskins logo or a name. We gotta go be replaced in very short order. And the reason that 30 I mean, 30 may be high, but we're all going on the assumption that they want this happened very quickly. And just like constructing an office power if you need it done extra fast. You're paying overtime and your pain for things that you probably rather not. But That's the cost of expediency. Ben Fisher joining us here in the wait for dot com Hotline covers the NFL for sports business daily. Then talk to me a little bit about on. I don't know. I don't know if you know this. You know the process by which We know the league wants this to happen, and Roger Goodell has supported it. But what any idea what goes into league approval is if the owners in a certain percentage About the logo aboutthe name. You know, I mean, any idea about how that process works, at least get that step done and over with Uh, yeah, We don't need to approve it on and that's ah vote of owners. But other than that, it's it's actually it's not entirely clear, not on. There's not a detail procedure in public. And that is public knowledge on exactly how that happened. But the league certainly does have rights over this. You know each of these 32 teams the individual business for certain purposes, but The league knows they're going strong in its weakest member, and they don't want to be placed. One problematic became with another dude. Definitely I'd say so over that, But you know it's a bit of a black box exactly what they would be looking for, or what? Where the where the possible problems spots are on that son. You know, Ben, when the AH When Houston moved the Tennessee I believe it was Was it two years that they played with the Oilers marker or year year and 1/2 for something that they have the moniker before the seven? Okay, so they had them so they had the order. So my point is, is that it wasn't like the day that they moved to Tennessee, they become the Tennessee Titans. How long do you think this process plays out? And maybe compared from, you know, financial and just, you know, is there some comparison to how long it took with the Titans? Even though they knew that they were going to, you know, end up changing this. Can we kind of compare the situations about how long it may take for all of this to finally come to fruition? Well, I guess there's no reason you couldn't compare them because that is the last time a team change nicknames. Um, without you know, part of Ah, relocation or, you know you could talk about the ground Reagan's thing, Whether that was technically an expansion people, whatever but It was the last time you standing franchise without moving cities of changed his name, but it's so long ago. I mean that the scope of their websites but sort of your very basic, just digital properties that the Redskins will need to rename are so much bigger and I like being all that got so much more complicated, but that there is a good four compared to because that was a situation where The name change was part of a broader strategic vision and means that happened, But it wasn't necessarily important that it happened. By given bay. They were able to do things sort of under normal business. This is something now that it is completely different because there is a sense of urgency and we don't know exactly when they want to set up a new maid. But all indications are reporting is basically as soon as possible. And this is not something that you know, most business experts say wise to do. It's possible There's a 1,000,000 different things you get wrong. That re brandy. You want to make sure everything's perfectly buttoned up. So it probably doesn't take. You know, two years it took the Oilers to become the Titans, but it surely would be taking more than the two months that it would take. To put up totally rebranded team on the field in September. So my supposition that the season is going to be something of a neuron period in regard to the Washington football team name, and the more I think about it, the more I think that they might well play this year, just like known as the Washington football Club work. Burgundy and gold uniforms that simply don't have any luck. I'm not predicting that I'm saying that maybe the most likely explanation for them trying to do this this late in the summer. Amid everything else, the NFL is trying to say You're out with the pandemic, of course. Ben, talk to me a little

"The Oilers put up a five spot in the fourth five in the third period to go away running away with an eight to three victory everyone's defective batteries are going to need to be charge that person a team that can just fly up and down here with the best of them and they got even faster three deadlines to the weight of the games played no you don't it's nice to have listen I'm the first guy that wants to have the size of the line up but if you look at both Chris and who is playing with your fifty second keep maybe the test for the NHL it's taking away time and space he is got a one two step that gets to the opposition he's got a great staff you don't see don't you keep running all around the ice hitting people when he competes hard really competes hard and he could be nasties got an edge to his game but you don't see him delivering huge hits all the time both crews could take a page for those who keep the competitiveness as far as what he needs to do the fans he doesn't need to be a guy that runs over people which elected to be a little bit bigger a little bit stronger yes because he just doesn't get moved off quite as easily but you have to be today since you have to be in a position to take time and space away from the opposition players have that could stick and that's what he's gonna learn moving forward especially playing with Duncan Keith and it's going to be a good challenge for him is a nineteen year old up against the Edmonton Oilers I don't know where the assignments are going to draw whether Germany's actually wants to switch some of the defensive pairing to give some more experience up against the house of the top offense of players but with Connor McDavid and Draisaitl separated now and they've done that since the beginning of the new year this team is taken off it's just figure out who you wanted to defend they thought that maybe the production would fall off from those guys not playing together both it's kind of been elevated to another level here they've got some really nice piece of the puzzle to fit around those two guys on their top two lines so it's going to be a real good challenge to seal the Blackhawks defend against this team that can really bring an offense of a five a little deeper into that splits fill with withdraw his style and make David you're drinking Jula the essence of a two game goal streak he played for two and a half seasons with that one two punch it admitted it there were times could you even skated with both of them being together as they were earlier in the season or separate as they have been lately is Troy mentioned coach Dave Tippett deciding it early January that was the way to go before he actually lost the David for six games last month including that fox five three loss in Edmonton despite being broken up their production certainly has not dropped one bit especially after a couple of deadline deals in Drake thinks that becomes an even bigger problem for opposing teams I think we have two players that that that are capable of carrying their own lines you may as well separate them and spread kind of spread the wealth I guess an X. if you know if you have them both on one line is maybe we have two superstars allies not really easy to check them but to do is worry about one minute than two or three or whatever I think if you have no cousin separate lines at that near night warning okay the signs come out of some of the signs come as these keep coming in waves and it makes it a lot more difficult than the going gets tough you need to go you can always put them together and you know that they're gonna create some magic can make something happen yeah there could be two games this season including Monday's wet dry settle and make David have combined for double digit points and now the James Neal is healthy he's now joining McDavid on his line and after a brief three game injury absence try no you really impressed with Tyler Yamamoto up in Edmonton he has looked very good against the hawks that last game up there last month packing that second line with dry subtle and a rejuvenated Ryan Nugent Hopkins so as far as top six it goes you know I don't know if you could find a better one rolling right now via in the NHL if you look at who Connor McDavid is playing with the kind of goal while they're still looking for somebody to to fit for a win position with him what do ever placed her better half the speed of the game and they picked up after the seal from the Detroit Red Wings he started off with that line of Connor McDavid moved down a little bit of gold this is the first and only the last four but if you look at the Ryan Nugent Hopkins the former first overall fifty there was a lot of pressure on him and what he the guy to take me to the next level no it's not his fault but now he's he's slotted into a nice position twenty six years of age nobody's talking about Ryan Nugent Hopkins anymore what tunes from the pills are talking about now Dr Seidel and ponder McDavid so now he's kind of gone under the radar here and he's been flooded in a much better position he's a very skilled player very talented player at the one B. type of level we've got a couple one days and it's really helped him a lot and I think that has Drake was talking about we see that happen multiple times over the careers of Joe today's attacks retainer sometimes they play together but sometimes they split it up because it's just harder to defend against the key that he was talking about two individuals that can drive alive and that's what you're getting with McDavid and Draisaitl offensively the way that they played and that's what you get from John contagion factor K. they can take care of their own lives individually for you get a real nice mixture no for the orders in the top six where I think it falls off a little bit is after that in the black box I think you're we're in a position that is the match of works that way you focus on shutting down the top two lines the focus on winning the game in the third quarter and while the hawks you know they haven't put together of the consistency that they have like the Oilers they've done that at this crucial time of the year eight three into over the last thirteen if they gave an estimate they've taken care of business on the first two stops on this road trip against the central division the Monday night let's USAAC city then going to Dallas the next night and winning in overtime by a two to one score different ways same results as they face what should be a desperate hockey team here tonight two games of solution in the natural pretty smart phones against also they really took it to us all game long S. Middleton I don't want so we need the points there yeah you heard Connor.

"So when you do when you do come, you know what have you let me know your common you come in all the way from New Jersey, I did some research, and I Google area code. If you're if you're wondering how we know where you're coming from buying you know, if I'm at the game I could probably get you into the alumni route for little period. So you up to the orders alum there, with, with a little bit of those 'cause I go to us. But, you know, would we talk bubblegum cards, you know, that's kinda funny because what are played through the Rangers. I think I've got five Bubba up cards at out there. You know it's all star players. Get all the mail in drag got my share, but you're out wasn't star player. We had star players that would get so much triggered mail. They had trouble even open. They would pay Geist opener form. So with me, somebody must have figured out. I probably didn't get as much as you're the guy. So I got some mail on. I'm open it up in the Justin. And in this card said Cam, you know you're my favorite player. I really like you lot. Hey, you think you give me Ron do gays autograph aside laughing? I said at that the covenant the back door, give me a Patna back, and who want me to go over Iran Dugas autograph form. So another one of my bubble. Gum cards also has it yo when you get a picture me on. A little bit about my stats. But then the talkable we're on you on the side of it. So that's pretty weird. We'll have to find which hockey card that is mentioned little garrison by. What also talks about. There's one of your hockey cards with a big figure skate on the backs as that, as I guess. A did you know that you took figure skating lessons to improve your your skating, which we talked about another episode if you wanna hear that. So why don't we talk about the announcement that the Oilers have a new head coach Dave Tippett who I don't think you played against but maybe did. But I know that you're wear him in his career. So do you wanna talk about your thoughts on to it as the new coach Cassiano lot about tip one? I did know is a followed him. We need coach there resulting, that team for years and years, the struggle with the payroll. They weren't drawing any fans and their teams who are just average at best typically along. And again, you know they had. Maybe one or two really good players, but but because he couldn't afford the salaries they would always treat a lot of the players for younger players and where gone with us is, is Dave Tippett. He seemed to do so well with what he had in front of him. So I'm saying to myself, you know what? Maybe he's like her Brooks. Herb Brooks can stand up in just a move. And he would talk you and I remember I can hardly wait to get on the ice guy. Happy soul fired up. And that's kind of coach that I love those guys in, you know, I've talked before his coaches at say, will they make millions of dollars the should be able, I don't half to give fire they should be able to do with themselves, as I said, before those coaches, they say that because they don't have the ability to get somebody pumped up. They don't have it in their personality. So they turn it around in the. It on the players if a coach could get your players at another level by getting them pumped up by getting them through Ciaston. That's a long season. You need all that help. And so when I look at Dave Tippett, maybe that's the ability. He's got is he brings the best out of maybe he's a great talker in Jess Newman..

"You know, you know, that they should be given their heads shake. So that's what Holland does a want. This somebody overriding once he signs, and so I think they're gonna give them that three them. So if he turns it around it's it's because of his vision and if the fail this because it his vision. So I I gotta believe that that's going to be a good choice. Just like they're looking. If is not him is rumors that is Mark hunter. I know Dave hunter and David was one of the finest guys and got a good hockey mind. And I believe his brother Mark will come in here. If if. It's mart. And also do a good job. But I like the two candidates that is names. I I'm here floating around. I really do believe they have to start from scratch in keep the core. And in change the infrastructure of side of the game, Ocoee, you should be able to find scouts that go out. If you look at Calgary if they built that team up to the drafting, and you'd get you know, teams that I've said it before that could find the diamond in the rough in fifth round pick in the sixth round pick. That's what you need. You can't always get the number one or top five. And even if you get that, this means the pan out. So so so, Holland, I think he'll become an here. I you know, I think we'll make the playoffs next year. But I gradually see us getting better better as as we move forward. So Dan as you were talking about the Oilers, I was thinking back to time. About what not to do with smelling salts? So since I was our ably only five or six, I will let you tell the story. And I learned the hard way. I learned to well. So those pizza Klopp around a little glass capsule, and you snap them. And then you smell the Simona capsule. And it's powerful as so quit you first get into pro. And you get these ammonia capsules you could barely you gotta hold on. Wait, it's pretty powerful. But the longer that you know, you play the game. "The replays. Just double check verify. That's definitely five minutes are no now that we get to look at it at slow motion. It didn't happen that one. So it's unfortunate that it did happen. But it cost the owner of Vegas awful lot of money and feel bad for the pants Vegas was played some good hockey. So now, go to an Email question. Do you have any suggestions or topics or questions or you just want to say, hi, you can always send us an Email at you from the penalty box, gene, L dot com. So this question is from Chris. And he writes, but pieces do you feel the oiler should add improve their chances of making the playoffs should the Oilers inquire about any of the Leafs forwards is costume in good enough. And I will add that about half an hour ago. It was announced that can Holland will be the new GM of. The oilers. So if you also want to talk about if you know, an Hollander, if you have any thoughts about him, and how that will impact the Oilers, you know, when I'm watching this playoffs. And I can't say I've watched every game. You know, these other things going on in my life June the playoffs, but I try to watch as many as I can and for the oil news. What will what thing I've realized in the playoffs. I mean Calgary got bumped. And they got a couple of smaller forward set, you know, all year long. They're getting point centered leading the team. I'm starting to think that wouldn't a playoffs come you might need. And which is probably probably can't do it. But a team that takes you to the playoffs is not necessarily the team. That's gonna win the playoffs for you. Because when the playoffs come it's a lot more tight checking there's a lot more players realizing that if you've got a Johnny grew drawer front, you that likes to? You know, skied and got a speed your job is to get in his way, and you crowd him. And you rob a motive gets the boards. And I think you know, the team that cares. You all year long may not necessarily be if you don't have that lineup that will allow you to have your big players being the grinders again, I'll go back to Saint Louis team. They don't have they got Cinco in the got a couple of guys echo score. But overall, they got a big grinding team. And so with your lose I'd like to see some more size up front. I'd like to see their is getting better. And better the Goalby. You know, that's the coin that Golias he's like six foot eighties. Big. Boy, he tries hard that think. He's everybody likes them. But they've signed them to believe it was for you deal with three or four million bucks a year. So he's gonna be here. He wants to be the number one goal. He wants to be the guy that the turn to. All the big games. He's got to win there. I'm just not convinced as of yet that that is their number one goalie, so it's pretty hard to find the number one goalie beserk commodity, and may maybe you can go to LA kings whose they haven't made the playoffs. Well, no Jonathan quick what a goalie is he got hurt wasn't his best season. Maybe you can cry Jonathan flick out of LA. Maybe that's what they gotta try to do. But I think you gotta get for sure. Number one goalie, you gotta get more size up front, and you gotta be having grinders, and you gotta have guys escape. Now. Having said that who ought to try to find that team..

"Offs that some of the teams around them. Jeff is don't have few things conspiring against the Edmonton Oilers. One of them is the Pacific all of a sudden is getting real good at the top. Right. So we're looking at best case, of course, wild card for the Oilers, but all of Calgary's been hot Vegas might be the hottest team in the NHL the best team playing right now, San Jose Sharks. Have been dismantling teams on the regular. We'll talk with Erik Carlsson logo later on the podcast. So that's all conspiring against Edmonton. And again, I mentioned off the top of was conspiring about them compounding all of this. I would imagine weighing heavy on the psyche of the Oilers an oil fans Calgary's, really good. Calgary's a really really good team. And it's tough to watch your provincial rival thrive like this. When you have the best player in the NHL. And you can't get it in the right gear. I would say that is a factor. But to me the frustration build up has been coming along time for that. I mean, that's just probably for their fans and added kick in the teeth. But I don't know if that's as big a factor, maybe internally or even on social media than than some of the other things like I said earlier, Jeff you think they were fifty points out of the playoffs. And they're they're right. Their social media. I think is I always am careful about how much weight to put into it. What percentage of the public has a Twitter account? It's like twenty twenty percent of the people have a Twitter account. And I think Twitter has certain leanings. Both politically in terms of who uses it. But if you thought that everybody had a Twitter account, you would think that there would be riots in the streets of and right now. And there is there's no question that there's a lack of consumer confidence in what the orders are doing. Right and Kenya. Scott got in there, and you breathe a little bit of life into the team. He got them going. He's still has them in the race. Even though it sure looks like a Mirage. I just see a fan base that has no belief in what the organization is going to do. What's the saying? If you start listening to your fans who never them. Yeah. So I do understand that felt bad for last night. Even though he finally scored Lucia I just hope that he's not on social media. And if he has a hope he wasn't reading it last night. It's supposed to be going on out there finally scores in North America. Scored the goal in the preseason overseas. Finding scores our goal, and it is just that's the excuse to get this thick out for the pinata. And it was have a go at Milan Luchik. And if you can religious, you know, exactly what he said Africa scored the goal and getting back to the bench and all the afterwards was him getting starched on Twitter. That's this team. That's been false started outside of the stretch. When Hitchcock I took over so many different times this year when you have a team that gets false started like that. Maybe you shouldn't be surprised at that reaction. It is the paper anniversary so read the piece of paper up to GMC terrain, by the way, you mentioned I hope cheese on social media. Yeah. I hope is family. Im- isn't telling him what is said on social media because that's the worst. I always tell relatives and friends don't tell people what set about the Monte or social media because you always make it worse..

"And the thing is I started to figure out is there other ways I could do it says start using the team names. I do it as a jumble. Remember the old guy? I I had the jumbles my dad loved those skit there's lots to play. It's a blank canvas blank. Campbell's Habla Raza. I believe is how they refer to it. So good for you committed to its right off the bat before we get into the into the podcast. We have a lot of really good ask through, by the way. Like, she's pretty smart. I don't know her at all by she's got a pretty bright future. Like, I say don't know or at all I'm a little bit familiar with her work. But people tell me, she's she's very bright future. You know, you're good. When you vanish. Yes. She's an expert person that might show for the eagles vanish from hockey Twitter. I'm a big believer in the right? People are always watching. And I think they've been watching her who's been watching the Edmonton Oilers everybody a lot of our ask thirty ones and can't get to all of them. But a lot of them evolve around the Edmonton Oilers and what to do with the team. What's happening with the general manager? How you feeling if you're Connor mcdavid what's happening with Edmonson right now as record this podcast. They just got stomped seven to by the San Jose Sharks after walking into Anaheim and winning four nothing after getting curbs not the night before against the Los Angeles Kings. California's been an interesting trip again for Edmonton. And they'd beat Arizona to which was a game. They have to have this is their year. Jeff there's six of the next seven or at home and the only road game. I believe is Vancouver. And of the seven teams, they're playing the only ones that currently stand a playoff position or buffalo and Calgary they have to make their move here. You think they were fifty points out the way people are talking about them. They're two points out. But what's going on? Edmonton says to me that this is an organization saying for lots of different reasons missing the playoffs are not an option. Sometimes you see. Team lurching the way they are an organization will say this is not our year, and we're not going to waste assets or warrior but assets to try just get get in. That's not what's going. I Admiral tin, and I think there's two reasons number one. They've got luxury suites and stuff that are up. Some of them were on a three year term this is year three. So I think there's that that organization understood what a playoff run could do for them financially when they were there two years ago, and they went seven games with Anaheim in the second round. I think you get a bit seduced by that. But between that and the sweets. I think there's that and number two jobs are on the line. And anytime jobs are on the line people do things that they wouldn't normally do so between those two forces. There is an added level of importance to make the play..

"I'd have to look into it as far as the logistics of that happening. But shouldn't it be the case? Anyway, Winnipeg's dot their team back. Let's forget about Atlanta. No offense to their fans. But that team has done. Nobody seemed overly interested in. Anyway, I called a couple of games they're eight thousand fans in the building and five thousand of ranger fans. That's just a fact so I would like to see that. But you don't see it necessarily with the Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers in the NFL still are part of Tennessee's history. Even though Houston did get a team back in the Texans. But they didn't take the Orlando took the Texans name. So that's a little bit different my head spinning right now. But Ricky, you're absolutely right. If the coyotes moved to Houston than Winnipeg should get the coyotes history. Absolutely, Tom, where's the love for Mitch Monir at the all star game. He's not even a bailable to vote for the last man in what else do you think? Who who else? Do you think that's not? Well, I guess that. Kreider snubbed should be the last man vote for the Rangers not match to Carello ridiculous. Okay. Kabul. Mary got snubbed he should be in the all star game. But he's at least got a chance to get into the last vote Patrick line either. Same thing has a chance again of last Jeff Skinner has a chance to get into the last vote. However, you only pick one guy from each of the divisions. So you can't pick multiple guys from each division. So that's gonna make it difficult for mourner to get in like if you want if you even have more energy was there, if if Skinner gets the vote will then that's going to put an end to anybody getting in from that division looking at the divisions. Now trying to get it all together here you were the division in question. We're talking about is the Atlantic Division. All right. So Morgan Riley who was not a bad selection for Toronto, man. The Leafs are just Laden with talent. That's the problem. I probably would have martyr heteronomy, but Riley's had a great year. He's also leading all defensemen in scoring at least the last I checked, but if you've oats Skinner in will then Briley can't go in because you only get one vote one guy from the division. So that puts you know Skinner in buffalo. Maybe it makes it difficult. You know, the metropolitan division Palmeri deserves to be in the in the in the all star game representing the New Jersey Devils, not Taylor hall, but he's not going to have a chance to get voted in Tang in Pittsburgh or Backstrom in Washington is definitely going to get the Don why is land is Scott getting vote, and he was on the best line in the NHL saying there were Patrick line. It does get frustrating. Even though I keep saying, I don't care. It does get frustrating. Jim says when is Chris tangoing to get the respect he deserves? It's a great question. I was thinking about this and talking about what David only one was calling the game the other night. Pittsburgh's got so much talent. It's easy to get lost. Right. Like, you feel bad for getting Malcolm have Malcolm's on any other team. He's their best player and he's getting his do. But he's on the same team is Sidney Crosby. So Sydney's going to get all the credit Sydney is going to get all the love Sydney's going to get all the conversation. He's got to be the second best team. He's one of the top five players in the league's not even the best player in his own team. Then you look at Phil kessel Phil Kessels a tremendous player all year about him is trade. Rumors. All right. And then you've got crystal Tang who sees the ice better than maybe any defenseman in the league? All right guys got a tremendous shot. Tremendous speed. You don't talk about why. Because you too busy talking about Crosby Malcolm castle. You know, the goaltending situation. It's amazing. Did you can get lost their in Pittsburgh with all the firepower and all the star power. But anybody who's anybody understands the importance of crisslow Tang on that team. He's by far their best defenceman, and he gives them a chance to win every single night on that blue line, which is something a lot of teams don't have..

"We'll see the next time around other teams appearing and there's a few more topics in the news over the last few eats. You had tweeted what does everyone think will be happening to the Oilers coach will stay willing? Go in the next day. They let go and replaced him temporarily with Ken Hitchcock who I believe was retired until this. So do you have any thoughts on changes to the Oilers coaching staff? Well, the only thing I could say is, you know, Hitchcock you've been around a long time. These us. You know, when you look at his coaching, wings and losses. He's he's coached two more wins than he has losses. So that's positive. I think the Oilers management stocks shriller sh thought his from what I read in the paper, they brought kin Hitchcock in because you know, they're not in a position to name a new coach he carry on me the next year to year four the Costa order. So right now, the brought Hitchin he's got a lot of experience with young teams older teams. And I think his knowledge he's a little from what I hear a little more stern than other coaches. So I'm expecting. I'm hoping that the owners will start winning more goals more games than maybe they're losing. I think that if we see more scoring from, you know, two lines through lines and not just Connor gave it whoever ease with these. You know, Connor mcdavid scored. He's been involved in at least half the amount of goals for that the orders of good on the board. So I think Hitchcock's gonna be a good move. And obviously if he turns things around in aid, you great they're going to have to consider giving him another two three more year contracts. So it's gonna be interesting time we'll towel where this one of the team's gonna go and another thing in the news, which hers new three weeks ago is the fact that the Ottawa Senators players were hominids in on the coaching staff their team in the fact that some of them weren't trying very hard and who were driver released that footage. And I know you have thoughts on that. But they do I can just say I'm glad that they didn't have these back in my day. The technology wasn't there. And so you could sit in a cabinet say, whatever you wanna say if I'm on a team, and I'm gonna cabalists implore five other players. And somehow we get on the topic of a coach you've express your opinion because you know, doesn't get back to the coach in you're not hurting anybody's feelings. And you're not getting anybody mad at you. So it's just players talking to players in this day and age that Uber driver he was able to post that. And it went viral. You know, obviously Ottawa and their staff and the owners of Ottawa's hockey team everybody in the league got to see what they were thinking. They didn't realize that they were being, you know, record it. And so that's just something that I think is a given today's day nature. You just can't kept be talking in public is people listening. He can't be doing anything goofy. Come because everybody's got fold with cameras on them. So I feel bad for the guys that should never have left the cab. I've read where the Uber driver got let go, and he is apologize for doing that as well..

"Loving seeing the Houston Oilers at Houston Oilers the Houston Texans and Houston Astros, finally succeeding after all these years. What iraq? It's it gets. Gets hotter. Rockets are having a good time down there right now at I guess you have to have a hurricane. That's usually what happens before then everybody comes to your side. What's interesting? I'm finding is that last year was a so called year of the quarterback. They're all coming out. Darnold Mayfield Rosen Allen. And I think we're going to look back to the year before hand as as Bob said Mike said about Pat Mahomes into Sean watching neither of whom were in the top nine picks of the draft. You know, let's remember that also and reminds me of another late round first round pick was was was Aaron Rodgers and everybody you don't have to have the first pick. If you have a really good organization, we're gonna get to earn rajas and just one second. But before we leave Houston, it's worth noting. They're five and three and a division. Our the next closest team is Tennessee at three and four Jacksonville at three and four Indianapolis attuned five now you're talking about quarterbacks and see Marcus mariota and in Tennessee. There was some flashes. Maybe they would turn that thing around. They're not there yet. And. Indy with Andrew luck is just you know, they're going to have to put no in front of his last name because he's just it's not working out down. There. Jacksonville is a story this year at three and four and Blake portal's now suffering the slings and arrows of who was at Eric read or Malcolm Jenkins or one of those guys said, you know. Oh, yeah. You know? But but but Colin Kaepernick can't have a job. But Jacksonville is doing what they're doing essentially saying con cabinet could be better than could be better than Blake Bortles right now the way that he's playing. This is not what we expected from the Jacksonville Jaguars. When the season started talking about the narrative change in fast on that after beat the patriots. Okay after they beat the patriots. They were gonna they were the next powerhouse to the AFC and Doug Marrone, apparently was the new Vince Lombardi. Okay. And the backstory is that the jets didn't hire Moreau and a lot of people thought he's going to. So now it goes in and he plays the jets, and they are winning by three. Touchdowns. And he goes for two at the very end because he's still mad at them for not hiring them. I think the scores against the Jaguars since that moment are like ninety two twenty eight they are going the wrong way. They've they've clearly given up on on on Bortles and. This is they actually have an interesting game. They actually have a very interesting game on Sunday because we got two teams who have a lot riding on a middle of the season games. Which is the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars Jackson's at home, and I was going to say at home. It's technically home game. But but the eagles and the Jags. Okay. One of them is going to basically say save their season in London on Sunday. Because if the eagles lose again, I'm not sure that they're going to pull out of this little tailspin there in not in five. Neither one of them is going to play not with the who they have to play. One of these teams even a four and four. But if the eagles are Jags are three and five you think they're making the play offs. And I was in Philadelphia on on Monday and Tuesday of this past week after they lost Carolina. The eagles giving up they had a seventeen nothing lead in the fourth quarter and blew it to Carolina. You don't wanna be in Philadelphia? When I was doing the radio because I was on a book tour, and I'm doing I said, just forget it. You know? It's like, yeah. Yeah. Welcoming us. I'm sure you have a nice new book out. What about the eagles wanted to just jump out windows there? I mean, they have totally buried Jim Schwartz defense because it gave up twenty one points in the fourth quarter, and they're all over. They're all over it. Because that's what Philadelphia does. But one of these two teams is going to be three and five after after a game overseas and they're not coming back to make the playoffs..
