For Cal in the Big Game, its always maybe next year
"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. For Cal in the big game. It's always maybe next year. There are times when a habit never grows old Stanford's football program nose. The feeling no matter how often the cardinal beat cow, and that's nine street wins after Saturday's twenty three thirteen victory. There's an exhilarating freshness to carrying the axe around the field, and it's all the sweeter. If it happens in strawberry canyon. There wasn't much to say about the game. Not with the bears. Simply refusing to accept the golden opportunities coming their way, there were no trombone players on the field. No mud-soaked miracles or fond farewells Trump beloved coach, none of the vivid developments that have characterized the big games history. And it's not such a crushing development for the bears. Seven five who will feel better about things when they're bowl game to be determined. Sunday comes around later this month. Still nothing discuss Cal sporting community. Like the site of Stanford winning this game with the student section big. Sunlight people. Were in. No rush to leave not even after Paulson debates. Forty three yard interception return setup. Stanford's final score in the weaning minutes. This had been terrific day for attendance to the point where the announced figure of fifty seven thousand eight hundred fifty eight actually seemed a few thousand short making a pleasant. Contrast to the desolate Levi stadium Friday nights Pac twelve championship game, oddly, the only disappointing attendances you was on Stanford's end of the six sections set aside for the red-clad visitors in the stadium southeast corner. Some were notable for their vacancy, but the voices were loud and proud backed by the ever ninety Stanford band, and those people got a mighty reward at game's end heading their way trotting joyously across the field. We're seniors Jake Bailey. JJ Sega Whiteside and Ryan Beecher toting the weighty impressive acts as so many Stanford players have done before in a rivalry carrying this much tradition. You'd like to think they trade the thing off on occasion. But. This trophy has become strictly farm property. It's always maybe next year for cow. Always a sense of envy and regret. Nobody expected the bears passing game to even approach Stanford's high-powered attack led by quarterback cage Acosta. Hello and our Sega Whiteside who entered the game with fourteen touchdown catches. And yet the chances were there and roundly blown in the second quarter with Stanford leading ten three quarterback. Chase Garber had Jordan Dunkin open in the end zone on a third and five pass from the seven yard line. But overshot him Dunkin barely getting a fingertip on the ball the bear settled for another. Greg Thomas field goal wide receiver. Jeremiah Hawkins had a couple of nice catches on the day. But he'll mostly be remembered dropping a perfect pass along the right sideline in the third quarter costing the bears about a twenty yard play and killing Dr. Then there was a deebo spectacular end zone. Interception early in the fourth quarter. Notable by the fact that the intended receiver MO ways was nowhere near the ball. All when garbs finally connected on a touchdown. Throw an eleven yard Dunkin. There were just ten seconds left in the game. He's a younger player, and he's got to continue to improve coach Justin Wilcox that have gardeners. I thought he took a step forward. One hundred ninety seven yards passing to Custos two hundred thirty seven even though there were some opportunities. He would love to have back. You're going to have a tough time beating Stanford if you're not scoring touchdowns in describing the mood of his post game locker room Wilcox said everybody's kicked in the gut. And as the regular season ends that could apply in large part to the entire pack twelve aside from the lamentable TV contract and ever do be officiating. The championship game is an ongoing disaster Levi stadium with a contract running through next season and an option for twenty twenty beyond that it's likely to find a more lively neutral site home in Las Vegas. But if anyone's thinking clearly that game should be returned to the home fields of top seeded teams as it was in two thousand thirteen. In Stanford overcame, a hostile setting to win at Arizona state. Then again, it's tough for anyone to think clearly when packed off Commissioner Larry Scott seem so consistently misguided even the Washington and Utah fans were booing Scott during Friday nights postgame ceremony. But why so many reasons I'd start with the fact that college football, and especially the Pac twelve needs an eighteen playoff. While Scott preposterously insists that four is absolutely the right number as for the lingering mood after Saturday's big game. It was a time for Stanford's Victoria's chance and Cal second thoughts. There's nothing you can tell our guys right now that will make them feel better said Wilcox. There was deep appreciation. However for a home crowd that finally resembled a big time collegiate atmosphere gazing into the jam-packed eastern stands. "The end of those for the foreseeable future. Although we did just recently is this year have a Brock Tober yet again. So who knows the Bortles could still rise got plenty on that clapback from an NFL quarterback. One of our very own got to deal with yesterday. And of course, me trying to still figure out how much I'm willing to buy into the Texans because last night Monday night football the Houston Texans beat the Tennessee titans. Thirty four to seventeen tighten up. No longer it. Appears that short-lived flirtation with the titans possibly being a contender in the. Much-maligned AFC south seems like a thing of the past at this point with their recent skid buffer Houston on the other side a team that went out rushed for over two hundred yards last night on the back of Lamar Miller. Ninety seven yard touchdown run. Going up against Marcus mariota doing his best impression of Philip rivers. From the other day trying to match or exceed that completion percentage record completed. His first nineteen pass of the game twenty two or twenty three on the night. Obviously coming off of Philip rivers twenty eight or twenty nine performance this Sunday over it wasn't enough. And for Mario to they were a lot like Philip rivers performance short passes that weren't buoy by the rest of the team performance. But the Jaguar excuse me that the chargers could provide the titans could not on the other side of the Houston Texans. This is a team now that has rattled off eight straight wins. Their playoff. Odds are now up to ninety six percent after starting the season Owen three where their chances were down to fourteen percent. We do those stats all the time at the beginning of the year teams that start owing to have blanked percentage chance of making the playoff. Oh in three seemed like a death sentence. And then they rattled off a very sort of Aaron Rodgers asks stretch of wins that have now put them in the driver's seat. Hell maybe even got a twenty six percent chance to have a playoff by the third. Best figure in the AFC at this point. So it's how much do you believe because right now this team is healthy and firing on all cylinders in a way that I have to acknowledge. I mean last week or the week before I sat up here and said, I I think the colts are the best team in this division. Man. There's part of me that still thinks that just because of all of the commodities in this division. And this is not a slight to Shawn Watson. But rather I think a testament to how great Andrew luck truly is on his best day. And now that he's got protection where I wouldn't still look long and hard. At the colts for that reason and the match up between these two teams potentially. The matchup between the colts and Texans. One that we get in two weeks in Houston is extremely interesting to me because on the defensive side of the ball. You've got JJ watt playing like the defensive player of the year again, the early season rust being knocked off from a back injury and all the litany of things. JJ watt is essentially been like a rob gronkowski on defense. As far as the attrition that his body has suffered and he is managed to come back and look every bit like the guy that we remembered and now he gets to do it with a healthy and competent JJ jadeveon clowney right next to him. But if you listen to their head coach Bill O'Brien. Channeling every bit of the ballot. Check he could muster up. Steam, still hasn't accomplished much of anything. I think we're playing better complimentary football. And I think our special teams is doing a very good job. I think our coverage in still good job return game is better. And hopefully, it can continue because we really like I said like we haven't done anything, you know, we've won eight in a row. Everybody clap for that. That's fantastic. But like what have you done? You haven't really done much. I am is my goal junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app somewhere. Whatever proud looks like for Bill Belichick, and I don't know how demonstrative that set of emotion is he's gotta be that version of proud listening to Bill O'Brien pooh-poohed the accomplishments of his football team is now one eight straight games. How about Lamar Miller too? It's in a world where we saw juju Smith Schuster with a ninety seven yard touchdown this weekend. He became the believe the only player with multiple ninety seven plus yard touchdowns on his resume. Lamar Miller says anything you can do I can do better. Lamar Miller with the I ninety seven yard touchdown run since his ninety seven yard touchdown run back in two thousand fourteen when he was a member of the dolphins. He becomes the only player in NFL history with multiple ninety seven yard runs. So now, we got a magic number ninety seven dancing around and all our brains and for Houston vet emergence of a run. Game at a time. And we're going to have a an interesting talk this morning about paradigm is in the NFL because we seem to be at this strange crossroad where a lot of people, and I've heard know the analytic, I Anna little movement idea that running the football doesn't matter. And I'm even someone's that subscribes to the idea that if you don't run, well, forcing a run game over over what you need to do is detrimental in my mind. But this idea that are running game doesn't matter. Hell as recent as last year in the playoffs where three of our four final four quarterbacks in conference championship weekend. We're replacement level backup quarterbacks we had this idea floating around that in two thousand seventeen you did not need a marquee quarterback in order to be competitive fast forward to a year later, and we are busy critiquing Aaron Rodgers for a couple of overthrows in turf balls in a game the other night because the standard for quarterback play has been so high this weekend that anything that falls short of perfection. As we've seen with Marcus mariota. And with drew Philip rivers this weekend. Because they're paced by drew Brees because we're paced by Patrick Mahomes, that is sort of the burden at this point is that's the level that you are expected to reach. And so last night, we had Marcus mariota who is a guy that we're trying to kind of figure out still how he fits in. Now, we've got what we believed to be competent offensive coordinator, Matt leflore who's going to run more of a modern version of the NFL offense. When variable and company came over they said, we're going to let this guy run more of the things that made him successful in college, exotics, mathematics smashmouth is dead and gone. But then on the other side, you've got Houston who does not still protect the Shawn Watson, very well from hits either in the pocket or otherwise some of the design runs early in the game that you saw for him were cringe-worthy kind of hits that he was taking. I don't think he takes good enough care of himself at certain times. But he's the Texans seemed to have one of those Martine Cornerbacks. And if you can't protect them overly well, then a ground game ends up becoming your version of. Of protection when you were allowed in be able to keep a defense off-balance the way that they were last night because one ninety seven yard run. Only gets you a small portion of the way to two hundred and eighty plus yards rushing. There's still a lot more work that they down the ground very consistently last night. That makes your play action more competent that makes everything else a little bit easier on a group that I still don't know outside of a couple parts is able to protect him at the level that a lot of his counterparts are afforded to Shawn Watson Texans quarterback answered some of his critics that have been around during this NFL season. We just focus on those. We don't we don't worry about the outside noise. We knew what this team was about. And you know, we gonna start a slower on the season. Plays away from three knows but far away. But those mistakes and make sure that we stay on top of the game and kept grinding. You know, we just focus on that locker room and everyone in that locker we made sure that we stay focused on each and every we took it when we.

"Winners of seven in a row after starting the year Owen three are up twenty one to ten against the titans team that won it plays. Well plays. Really? Well, Lamar Miller with a ninety seven yard touchdown run to put Houston up in a big way. We're hoping to be joined in the next few minutes by Brady Quinn. But if we're not we're just going to hang out and talk to I've given a really hard time about your Notre Dame fandom outta love totally kidding. If there's any team that it's reasonable to like to love anywhere in the country. It's not I mean, you're also you're Catholic, right? I am. And I had a family that went there. Yes. Oh, you did. Yes there. Two uncles of mine. My uncle, Jim. Allied to you. No relatives, the weather. It's a trace uncle, Mike and uncle uncle, Mike and uncle, Mike. Uncle uncle, Jim. I got totally wrong. That'd be amazed the likes it could have been the mics. I almost actual wall that thought because Brady cleanse gonna join us here in just a moment. Brady. Former longtime foe quarterback former Notre Dame quarterback, FOX boards. Cosmo analysts CBS sports HQ analysts and a really good dude joins me now Brady what's going on. But happy belated thanksgiving, buddy. Happy thanksgiving to you as well. With with the fan. Did you have a of Turkey. What would happen, dude? I was I was off. And I realized as I thanks giving off in ten or eleven years took the whole week off stake. Asian built Legos played with my kids and a twenty pound Turkey. I would say the majority of it myself. That sounds awesome. But here's something wrong. With me. I actually haven't got to really enjoy thanksgiving for walk because even in high school back in Ohio. If you're good you're playing route thanksgiving to the state playoffs. So it's been a long time for me. It would feel weird. If I wasn't covering football playing football something to do with football. Feel like now conditioned to expect to be working during football season ever thanksgiving. That's just that's just where I'm Alex. When is the last time, you did the whole Thanksgiving Day Turkey, you know, drinking cranberry sauce fallen asleep a to just at your house or family's house doing the lazy thing it had to been when I was probably in junior high. Wow. That's like. Last time. I can think about it. We have family docu. So I think we we drove down to my aunt and uncle place. And I just remember eating so much creamed corn that I pretty much almost passed out of the recording. So good though. Oh, my God cream cream point is deep that put up against anyone. Brady Quinn on the show Brady your football success and travels and playing days took you to and through Notre Dame. You're quarterback there. I know you're an analyst and your hell of an analyst. I want to ask you though, it may be he's a fan and don't be put words in your mouth. But just for you. What was it like watching that game? As Notre Dame was able to beat USC. And I think we all think other than Nate silver it fivethirtyeight punched its ticket to that to that final four. Yeah. Silver gets everything. Right. Oh, okay. I guess you got that right now. Look, I think looking at their season as a whole it's it's pretty remarkable when you take into account a lot of things I mean for starters. So Mike alcohol leaves their defensive coordinator the elevate Clark lead to take over. There's no give you that. This defense is going to be one of the best in the country. But it has good. And that was something that I think kind of emerged over time you saw week one Michigan, sir. How good Michigan was you weren't sure how Notre Dame was a close game three inside the way of winning. And then from there on out, you're saying, okay. Like, they seem okay, but they struggled to be ball state. And then you make a change a quarterback. And all of a sudden in book just ignites this confidence this offense that ended up being. Points a juggernaut. And I just the way that it would move the football opened things up and running game for Williams. And it became, you know, very very capable and very productive. And did you got to take into account? The fact that they lost my book lunch. What's number first round pick somewhere in the top San Quentin Nelson. He was like the number six overall pick stash, your straps, and they replace those guys. And and you know, their offensive line is played really really well. And then they also had to replace throw line coach wanted to Chicago Bears. Harry, he is one of the best at any level you're talking about. So they've had to replace a lot and for them to be twelve and no one undefeated. And for the way, they did it in changing to a quarterback that wasn't the guy going into the season. It's ridiculous story. I mean, it really is. What would you think about where they finished it happened play three of their last four the road the way they had to travel to play those games too. And it was close to that. I'm sure they would have liked versus USC, but you will see through the kitchen sink that the best shot. And I think it was a good enough win to secure the spot in the college football playoff. Were you the football analyst and former player knowing it was a long game. When USC went up ten nothing earlier were you the fan like, oh my God, the irrational. Oh my God. A little bit of both to be honest. I mean, look, I I think there's some kids that I don't the team that that kind of washed grow up that you root for them. So that side you're getting frustrated because you want this for them so bad, you know, tranquil who's as good of a human being as you'll ever come across captain of the team leader of the team that Rover linebacker position for them. He's the guy before the season and for that reason for him. But we gotta be more aggressive. We gotta start playing a little more press. Coverage got to do something to change, you know, allowing you get these easy. Completions of worked the ball down the field. And then just from you know, talking to you in talking to Brandon wimbush the quarterbacks for the past couple of years what I've run into on back on campus. You know, knowing them you want success for those guys. So there's a part of me that was eldest son was like looking at it picking. Okay. You know, what analytically are they doing wrong was doing oldest after watching you a suit up this guy? Did there? Brady Quinn on the show. So Brady it feels. I mean, I know Alabama could lose the Georgia, but they're thirteen point favorites. And no team has come within three touchdowns this year. Feels like a safe bet to bet on Bama clemson's even bigger favorite against pit I presume that you think both those teams are gonna win. It'll be one other team vying for that final spot. Yeah. It's it's it's one team by for the number four spot. And I think it's it's you know, it's gonna come down to, you know, Oklahoma, Ohio State if those to those to win their conference championship, and and I guess I must throw Georgia in there. Suspect Georgia will beat a fourteen in this ranking for the college football playoff. What if they play out at close? I mean what else if it's like a day ended up, you know, what would you buy three? You look at it and say, all right. You know, there are two loss team. But maybe we feel like they are one of the top four teams in the country. We've seen Ohio State yet got one loss or big ten champion, but they got blown out by Purdue. And they beat some other teams really really close. But what to make of it, especially if they don't perform great northwestern and win by small margin, Saint about Oklahoma. They give up to Texas another fifty points, but they win by one or two does that concerning for you? I mean, they changed, but that's a coordinators this year Ruffin McNeill. Got worse. Give up three points a game on average on the year. If you look at thirty three when you look at the stats, but with Mike stoops's like twenty six points a game. Now got worse over rough McNeil taken over. So it's concerning the committee because you don't want Oklahoma to go in there and all of a sudden give up seventy points, Alabama. And yeah, they'll put up some points. They're gonna get theirs. But you know, it's gonna be seventy two forty shootout, and Alabama's applaud away Oklahoma. So there's a lot of concerns. I think all the teams when you talk about how these teams square off. And how they match up may Brady Quinn on the show. Maybe it's the mid westerner in b- Brady from Iowa married a girl from Ohio and went to Missouri which used to be and should be a big twelve team. But in my wrong, and regardless of the outcome of the Georgia Alabama game wanting Oklahoma, Ohio State to get in just to have a 'nother conference represented. No, you're not wrong at all. And I think that's why you know, one of those two teams going to get in. It just comes down to which woman. And and I think that's why they created the criteria championships one and and take into account the fact that they when they're pitting two against one another they're gonna look at that. And that's part of the criteria. That's why Georgia will get eliminated. If they lose Alabama. That the problem's gonna be Georgia beats Alabama. Yeah. Oklahoma the house they don't get in. Because Georgia's definitely gonna give us a one loss as she champ, and Alabama's not getting left out, and we've already seen the committee. Let them go in and not being an SEC west of champ. He had to think of the SEC west of his that are only loss to Georgia. That's the best one loss in the country. So if that's the case Alabama might fall to four, but they should be outside the top five excuse me top four and it'd be number five. It would be to be still one of the best teams of the country Brady assuming and obviously these things can change. But assuming that Notre Dame were to play Clemson in the first game of the college football playoff on that side of the bracket. How does not match up against a really good Clemson team? Well, it is interesting to see I mean, you know, washing Michigan early week one. They had one of the better defensive fronts. I thought in the country I mean, not necessarily comparable to what Clemson is. But pretty close Gary decided to declare for the traps headed ended twenty nineteen this he's one of those stuck up front, and then when you look at their overall team speed on defense, and all that I I think it's it's somewhat comparable to what you find in clubs differences that offense their fire. Private power Travis ATM out Calcutt. He's been in the backfield. Trevor Lawrence has has definitely had his moments easily. He's a freshman. He's only gonna get better with time. But that kicking the football around the field. So they're gonna have to work cut out for him. Because I think your offense wanted to be challenged. And they've they've shown that propensity to struggle a little bit. They get versus USC they get versus pay. So that would be concerning for me as far as that matchup versus that very very tough defensive front. And then on the flip side their defense. You know, ten they match the team speed of Clemson. You know, you you watched the perimeter place for USC guys out in space bacon. Defenders miss being able to pick up yards in the methodically. Worked in the ball down the field. I would imagine if you can do it close we'll deal with. So it'd be a very very tough match. But I think it looked all the teams at that point. The college football playoff would be at four three tough match-up Brady Quinn last question for you. Jim Harbaugh had his team one game away from the college football playoff destroyed by state. What do you think Michigan should or should not do with their head coach? They need to keep them. You know, he's a good coach everyone's going to make a lot of that that game. And how it worked out? Bottom line is to be Ohio State maybe had their best day of the entire year. And Michigan maybe had close to the worst. So that happens. Yeah. Sometimes you go out there. You're prepared. You got everything the way you want it to be you've had a great season. And you fall flat on your face that happens. And unfortunately, it was the biggest game of the year and they get back to Toronto. But I think the biggest thing moving forward for is. They've got to open some things up, you know, shape Patterson's done now as far as his elgibility at Michigan. Whether it's still McCaffrey anyone coming up behind him. They've got to figure out how to open some things up. You know, this whole Veronese a fullback. We've got our tight ends. And all that that that style. Look it works for Stanford and they're competitive, but we haven't seen them win a national championship. So as as coaches David size as successful because he's bearing you know that that doesn't come. Very often, you know, Nick Sabin went some more spread style. You know, Mike Walker told me was there. He did it with him Ohio states doing what they're doing right there. Oh, see and how they spread things robbed Haskins at some point. Michigan needs to come to the party and say we need to adapt to survive right now. Because otherwise, this is going to be the same result every single year going up against the team that has the type of caliber of athletes and quarterback like a lot of state does Brady Quinn. Great stuff. Really? Appreciate the time, buddy. Thanks for. Thanks should be done any time. Bill. Thank you, buddy. Brady Quinn on the program. Great stuff. Great got eight five five two four CBS. If you want to give your perspective on who should be that final team in the college football playoff, assuming Alabama and Clemson Walser revisit some of the topics we hit earlier in the show when we continue here in just a moment on righter than you with me. Stephen A.: 'I'm embarrassed by what I'm seeing from the Pittsburgh Steelers
"Me let me to just a little bit allow me to express to you the alarming level of frustration that I on questionably feel at this particular moment in time. I cannot put into words how disgusted I am. That the Pittsburgh Steelers ended up losing this game. I can't even put it into words. Ben Rothlisberger four hundred sixty two yards passing wasted. James connor. He's no Le vian bell. Juju Smith Schuster, thirteen receptions, one hundred and eighty nine yards wasted. For two reasons above all else. Big Ben Rothlisberger leading the league in red zone interceptions. Do another one yesterday was Shelby Harrison defensive lineman getting blocked in the coverage. And ultimately Ben Rothlisberger throwing the ball right to. Now. We can make the argument that it's the freakish interception that Ben Rothlisberger may have ever thrown as he so eloquent it in the aftermath of their twenty four to seventeen loss to the Denver Broncos yesterday. Denver Broncos team. That's now beating the charges in the Steelers in back to back weeks, by the way, we could go that route. All we can state the obvious. If you watched it throw, ladies and gentlemen, it was an interception. No matter what. Whether it was Shelby, all whether it was Roe. I'm sorry. Shelby. Harris. Oh, whether it was Roby who had. Antonio Brown completely covered. I don't know what the hell big. Ben Rothlisberger was thinking throwing that pass made absolutely positively no sense. Whatever you can point to that specific interception. But it was going to get into septic. It was going to get into septic. There is no doubt about that. There's absolutely positively. No doubt about that. Yet despite case keenum only one hundred ninety seven yards. Despite the fact that Denver didn't have the most formidable run a game to speak of. They still ended up winning the game. I mean Lindsay did have one hundred ten yards on fourteen carries. That's almost eight yards per carry. I got it. But the real culprit and all of this was bent. It was turnovers from Connor. It was a drop touchdown pass from Washington. I mean, I'm just looking around right now at the Pittsburgh Steelers. And I can't even express. The level of my frustration. Because you see regardless of how. But thank Pittsburgh secondary looked earlier in the season. They had got things together. They were looking a little bit better. But now, I'm of the monster. They lost that game yesterday. And I said, dammit, they just lost a trip to the AFC championship game. Now. Now, I'm not saying that laser gentlemen, mama's saying that it's a very simple explanation. And you know, what that explanation is? It's the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers now dropped to what is it a fourth seed. Or at least a three seed in the AFC that means Kansas City and New England both ahead of you. That means to get to the AFC championship game. You're going to have to be one of the other one a row, and I don't think they're going to do that. Now had the Steelers and all likelihood possibly fighting for birth to the AFC championship game at Arrowhead stadium against the kids City Chiefs. You know, what if you had home games prior to that one could stand the believe who knows what kind of upset could transpire maybe I'll get lucky. Now, it's no way in hell.
