Avatar: The Last Airbender Creators Depart Netflix's Live-Action Series
"Okay, let's start off with A bit of news that I'm sure comes to some disappointment our own ht. What is going on with Avatar the last air bender they were GonNa make a live action TV series for net flicks. What is the update? The latest update is a real bummer for avatars last Air Bender Fans Michael Dante Di Martino and Brian Connie ebsco who created the original acclaimed nickelodeon. Animated Series have parted ways with net flicks over the creative direction of live action remake series. De Martino Post announced in a post on the website titled An Open Letter to Avatar last air bender fans saying that they couldn't control the creative direction of the series and decided to just exit the project altogether and he he had some pretty not I wouldn't say harsh but not. Veiled for in terms of thinly-veiled In like knots unhappiness with Netflix production So he said at one point The project, which is still ongoing has the potential to be good. But what can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on screen, it will not be what Brian and I had envisioned or to make. So this is a massive bummer for Avatar. The last Air Bend Fans because De Martino. Goes involvement in the first place was kind of the reason that There was somewhat cautious excitement for this because these the creators at donors in executive producers for the new Netflix series and they promised or shared rather that they would be deliberate. Choice to a cast as. A people of Color and ethnically accurate to the depictions in leverage animated series and the. The memory of the last live action attempt. Ed Bender is still strong in fans mines, and we don't want a repeat of that. So now that contracts go rhino are gone, there's a lot of fear that the the. Disaster will be. Repeated. Yeah, we shouldn't insinuate that this disagreement it's probably over like the the the racist of casting or anything could be like story or character that we don't even know what the disagreements are over. This is a little surprising to me though because my conversations with filmmakers on and off the record has been that like Netflix's is pretty hands off with stuff. So I'm actually very surprised that big Conflict here I'm curious as a as a fan of Avatar the last air bender now that the creators are known no longer involved in this, would you still be excited to watch live action series not at all? My cautious excitement from before. Has now turned to a sort of read. which not to say that there can you know the situation can't come out the better I'm sure that there are some great. Writers and creators out there who could have an affection for Avatar last bender could. Steer this in the right direction, but it just feels like. Martino and Connie lasko are such a major part of Avatar less air bender and its success in why such great perfect animated show that they're not being involved in stepping way in a in this situation where it seems that they clash with the Netflix's executives in some way can't really know what? I sure what it just doesn't dumb. Bode well for the production at large.

"This time. It's an animated one. Comedy Central is rebooting The Ren and Stimpy show, which there is only aired on Nickelodeon. The cartoon saga first began airing in 1991. It did draw criticism from some people who thought it was a little too edgy for little kids. It'll have maybe a more suitable home at Comedy Central, which is home to adult themed animation. Siri's like South Park. And a new version of Beavis and Butthead del. Feature down Ah bit this morning when the

Diving Deep with Melissa Joan Hart
"I would love to just kind of start off talking about. I mean you've kind of been in the limelight for most of your life. Now you've been behind a screen and I'd love to hear Maybe how that has affected you. Would you let your boys do acting if they wanted to get into it? Just kind of love to hear your story a little bit. You know the thing is. I didn't know any other childhood right. My childhood was I had a fairly normal childhood where I grew up with my parents siblings on a Dead End Street Long Island walking to school every morning riding my bike valet classes. Because my parents couldn't take me because were too many children in our house. and But I also auditioned ended. Theater ended commercials and stuff like that so I think it was a little bit short of the way anybody else would take take a hobby seriously if somebody was a major soccer player at school and doing really well with that or if someone was gymnast and be being pulled out of school at the time for certain events started Nowadays everyone does travel. I don't travel was a big thing when I was growing up. But like you know missing. School for work was kind of odd but it was what I knew and everyone else had a lot of questions about it and I got very embarrassed about that kind of thing but Yeah but time I was like thirteen I was on Clarisa or maybe fourteen but not a lot of people had cable so my my kind of well growing up I was known as the rice krispies girl I was known as the Arnold Bright Girl like all these commercials I would do. Or if someone's parents let them watch me on the equalizer or they happened to see me on Saturday night. Live or I let a bunch of girlfriends come see me play ones but most of the time when I was doing a lot of theatre in my early middle school days nobody knew I was doing big FYODOR. Nobody they just knew I was going out at night. They had no idea at I was I was doing. You know a big play with big names and all this other stuff so And then Clarisa happened and while I was on a TV show filming in Orlando. I wasn't in Hollywood. I wasn't going to Red Carpet. Wasn't part of the whole scene circuit and then the show is on cable wasn't like a lot of people had it until later so really that's show became popular very slowly. Nickelodeon knew that there was good numbers behind it but as far as being recognized on the street it happened and I was living in New York City where nobody looks at your face anyway. Often keeps going. You know once in a while I would get stopped on the street in my teen years and I'd be kind of like flabbergasted by it and annoyed by it was weird. I don't know them but they're pretending they know me you know and and then Sabrina happened. We moved to La. I was twenty you know and I was a little more prepared and ready for it and so you know I feel like in a sense. I had a pretty normal childhood. Really until ninth grade and then ninth grade but you know teen years or was weird anyway kind of happy to get out of the high school setting away from peer pressure. I had a few friends but didn't really have group and felt like feel like I belonged which I think a lot of middle schools do so when I was around adults and working I felt very safe. I felt very accepted as long as I was. Nice to everyone It didn't matter what I wore. What music I liked who I dated. None of the adults care about that. Yeah so I learned very quickly that like L. Like how middle schoolers. They're mean to me because I were the wrong shoes with my outfit or desma. Mahir read for a play or something you know. And I'm like you know these adults are just like just be dumping ass right like as long as I was nice and I think that's sort of why I learned very early to like on a sat like you. You WanNa be professionally one. Do Your job you Wanna hit your mark in. It doesn't matter if you're the star or not like everyone has to behave themselves in a certain way. You don't get to be a diva because your names the one on the idol in your face. The one they're using to promote it like doesn't am. I get you a few things but I like to whenever I use sort of diva behavior. It's only to benefit everybody
Bronzers and Journals
"Moving on to a different topic that but one we have not discussed. I don't think no over on for over thirty five sunless tanner cousin. That was the tide. The subject of the email. This listener writes to us. I just came to the starting realization that there is a crucial part of skin care. We have not dove into yet. Sunless tanners exclamation point times three. I have more time than usual during the self isolation and since I won't be visiting a beach anytime soon. I'm wiping out the self tanners. For a little pep. I would love to hear some wrecks of easy to use an effective self tanners or an inhouse comparison tests. I've had good luck with tart tanner's but I am trying out I'll of paradise and will report back curious to hear what others are using out there. I'm curious to. I'm curious to because I don't use anything like this I don't either and actually I'm incorrect. I believe the title of this email. Referenced Bronze Irs and so it made me think about like what we may be putting on our sheikhs but that in our face but then I believe they're also talking about like all over Sunless Tanning. Yeah. I think they are now. Has Tanning ever been a thing for you later? Channing have you ever like bought the Juergens on okay back in the day. I mean. We're probably talking like DOTS. I feel like everyone was using that. Jergens sunless tanner. I would use it. I felt like it always looks sort of streaky on me So I I was never a huge sunless. Tanner person how about you. I also went through a phase of putting that jerk stuff all over my body but I have never gotten a spray Tan. I've always wanted to but I just have never gotten around to it. I don't even know where to begin to spray tans in my life one I got in the early to mid odds before a friend and I were going on a trip to Atlantic City when I lived in Philadelphia and I loved the Spray Tan like. I thought it was amazing and I was also like Oh. This is what it would be like to be. Tam like this. This is fun. Didn't get another one for probably ten years or so. And then when I was at buzzfeed someone else was doing in article about spray tans and they got like a spray tanner to the stars to come in and they asked if anyone wanted to get a spray tan and I volunteered and it looked so bad. It looks horrendous. Oh my it was way too dark. Okay I looked. I didn't look like myself like I felt like maybe over the years. I have now romanticize this original spray Tan but I felt like what was great about my original Spray Tan. Back in two thousand and four. Was that it. I still like looked like myself and this was just like what has happened. Look Tan mom remember Tan mom. Oh remember Tan mom. I'm like fully up on Tan. Mom what she doing now. I mean she's like releasing songs and occasionally appearing on the Howard Stern show it good for her? She's still so Tan. I believe she is. Okay but yes. I do remember Tan mom yet so that was my last experience and I was just like what no so. We didn't get a spray Tan. Like for your wedding. No I didn't okay. Okay I mean. I know a lot of people do that but I was just like nervous that it wasn't going to turn out well and then you're like stuck. This is my fear. This is why I have never done it and I. I also like for example. I used to wear the steel. Bronze are as like my blush. Even owned blush. That was just what I use it. I really liked it but now I get confused over the way. Bronze is USED TO CONTOUR Like I feel like I feel like the the way we use. Makeup is evolving. And I'm still in like two thousand and four and so I don't quite have a sense of what I would do with it. Like I did. Watch him Kardashians like basic makeup routine video and then I tried to emulate at home and it looked like I tried to make a three on my face with some bronze and looked very stupid. Like I don't St- I'm still not good at countering although maybe I should take Contra Zoom cloud. We didn't. We discussed that. We were going to learn how to contour during yes. I've watched this video and I was like this was like her own doing contour herself. So I thought I could at least figure it out as opposed to a makeup artist. I couldn't I had no idea what was happening. So there you go so anyway this is. This is a spot where we would love some listener feedback. Yeah we would love to tell us. What are you doing this? For Sunless Tanning are you doing? It is still a thing. What do you like? What don't you like tell us because I would. I am totally game to get a bunch of stuff and try it out for the sake of the pod I just. I'm not sure where to begin. So I'm ready okay. Great I'm ready to experiment okay. Story I think you've gotta read this this so I'm happy to I've been reflecting lately on the act of journaling and I think you two are the perfect people to reflect with me on this. When I was a child I used to try to keep a diary as documentation of my life growing up in the nineties with Nickelodeon. I was inspired by the movie. Harriet the spy and wanted to have the dedication that Michelle Trachtenberg character had with her writings however I was never very disciplined by. Diaries were sporadic. And I judge myself harshly for that in my mid twenties. I hit a rough patch in my life and my other wonderful sister. Hope Gifted me a journal to help me work through anxieties. Something clicked and I stopped writing for posterity or documentation. I started writing to get things out of my head. I stop worrying about continuity I would mention people places or events without preamble for my quote audience in fact I began my journals things that I would never even myself read again often because I assumed it would be too painful to revisit them. Journaling has been a great way for me to clear the junk out of my head now that we are in this unique time in history. And I'm expecting my first child that I should be. Writing for an audience has crept in again. I have the urge to think more of my writings as documentation that will be meaningful to someone else at some point. I'm definitely not a dance. Like no one is watching kind of person and this perspective is stifling. Dory I know you've been dabbling with generally more lately and since we're both writers. I'm so curious to hear what you think of on this question of audience for journaling. Do you write for no one like I prefer or for future you for your children or historians. I would love to hear from other listeners as well. Well well who do you? Who Do you write in your journal? Forgery? I think I write for future me I think I do too. I feel like writing for no one. I I kind of doing that. 'cause I'm not really thinking about the intended reader right but ultimately the intended reader is going to be future. Yeah hopeful and I say that as someone who still has kept journals pretty much through through college inconsistently but I have journals through college And I do enjoy a kate like not all the time but like occasionally I have gone back and looked through the journals and it like it is really wild to look through them and read them like re not just read about your your state of mind but like what you were doing and who you're hanging out with and I don't know I like I just find I find it really interesting but I also you know I like history and I like documents and so does obviously find interesting too. Yeah I you know when. My My parents gave me a journal the Christmas while I was living at home when my mom had pancreatic cancer and so I have a journal that kind of starts about three months before my mom died and it is really because that time in my life is so fraught and I don't remember anything from it. It is actually really moving to go back and read it and it's also very hard and miserable but it is really interesting to just see what my state of mind was during that time and I also have kept journals on and off my whole life. I mean I do think you do have to be prepared for if you are no longer around someone else reading it. You know like that is a reality that could happen.

NFL plans full season, starting on time
"The big news yesterday in the NFL in terms of what happens going forward should the schedule B. as it's supposed to be about you again they say it's going to they're offering the promise never full regular season full post season the vote happened yesterday to basically that it was a rubber stamp as we was gonna happen to allow the two more playoff record about your team plans to use a seven seed in each conference which means they'll be three games a wildcard Saturday three games while card Sunday including one on Nickelodeon by the way summer Sanders this text me back she's all in team summer will get you in the mood for that game absolute done but then the question becomes is that the most significant change what happened yesterday or is what happens in the regular season the more significant thing because by adding that extra wild card they've eliminated the two seed and the benefits that go with it because now only one team gets the bite each conference the number one seed and remember Kansas city got a by by being the two seed last year and they got to host the AFC champs of game because the ravens lost right to the Tennessee Titans so in your opinion what's going to be more impactful the idea of a seven seed and maybe them find a way to get to the Super Bowl which hasn't happened since Super Bowl forty seven or the flight to make sure you hold that number one seed down the stretch without question extra team in the playoffs for me extra team in the playoffs because we see wild card teams win the Superbowl it can happen just get in you can't win the Super Bowl if you're not the playoffs yeah I I think it's it's much more likely on the other outlook while Khartoum island wild card teams as the league as presently constructed right hand women anymore I think when we the last time we saw it was really back before the new CBA taking it back in two thousand eleven two thousand twelve when the effects really started to seep in I don't think with the current constraints teams constructed like that having to deal with this can win a super walk I'm with you on this one so again well greeted they will fight tomorrow yes I am a hundred percent on this because not only that but it make sure that you have meaningful games played unless you have a four game lead right right right it does I know he's lost all seventeen games this season and eighteen weeks next year with a seventeen game season because again the seventeenth game with the new CBA won't start till twenty twenty one C. right price all have a regular sixteen game regular seasons over seventeen weeks the amount of such significant football that's going to be played down the stretch to make sure you hold on to that number one seed I think it's going to be buying a whack and it's still one of the great things that last week when you have all those division games in there but to me as I I again I speaking from a former player there is way more teams involved now they could have a chance to get into the playoffs and I'm all

"And a chance of some isolated showers later on in the day Netflix and Nickelodeon are teaming up for a multi year deal some of your favorite Nickelodeon characters looks like they're gonna end up on Netflix do we think this might be in response to Disney plus a launching yesterday I think it might be the streaming a power house Netflix announced a deal that will see Nick produce original animated films and series featuring both new and existing characters that's kind of exciting you have some favorite Nickelodeon characters being brought back to life and getting some new story lines that could be a lot of fun the kids network has already given the reimagined treatments to Rocko's modern life and invader zim and upcoming projects include the loud house and rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I think there's something or see and we obviously know and love the mutant ninja turtles however looks like they're going to given them a little bit of a back story now the deal between the companies shows just how serious the streaming war is becoming again Disney plus launching just a couple of days ago we talked about yesterday they had some glitches to the start of Disney plus so not the best start for Disney plus a now you have right away Netflix and Nickelodeon teaming up in right on their heels will have to follow that along and see what goes on but you know as we said yesterday a lot of people not wanting to keep all of these streaming services so people are Benchley going to be making some decisions last night the annual Country Music Association awards so let's check in with fox news radio the Tonya J. powers whose live from New York good morning time yeah I understand your big country fan yes absolutely very nice is so with you knowing all the players in this any big surprises for you last night I think the the thing that I mean this was a night that they had kind of set aside the highlight female country stars you know all the women of country and there have been some you know huge stars of of country music that have been women I mean Reba McIntyre and Dolly Parton were to the stuff into the guest host so to speak and you know those two are are you know giants in that field anyway and it looks like you know there were there were several in a big number seven you have Merrin Morris that Pat Alberta here for girl a new artist of the year was also when actually make bride female vocalist of the year as well as music video here both went to KC Musgrave who is just an amazing talent she got video of the year for rain but which is a fantastic song if you haven't heard it by all means go listen to that one it's it's sixty extremely well done and then they get the entertainer here which was interesting I think a lot of people were were probably you know not surprised that it went to Garth Brooks when he did you know hi like women during his speech Carrie Underwood a lot of people kind were rooting for her to be the first woman to win entertainer of the year since twenty eleven but that was not not to be he did say that you know he said if I if they gave this award for the show tonight and have to give it to Reba McIntyre's performance he also talked about a guilty Ballerini in in his speech as well so you know he he's always been really really good about that minka can giving out like a shell out to women I think one of the big things that it was really interesting and and good to see because you know it kind of shows the the changes that you know country music is making even though it's just like incremental was the musical event of the year which was a long pause ex and Billy ray Cyrus as all hell road so much as well because what is a meme musical event of the year I usually that is some like a like a sort of a collaboration okay it is not necessarily a vocal do they have local dealers are the ones that are you know like Brooks and Dunn or like established you know these two are they sing all the all the time together I think the other one is is more of like a collaboration per week there it features people we don't necessarily they're not like a group together and by the way Dan and Shay did get local do over here a couple of extremely talented guys I remember and I think it's twenty fourteen when they were just sort of starting to you know really make some noise they were sort of you know new comers at that point before they start winning awards and getting you know huge hits they came to New York and I got to interview them then you know and and those two guys are just you couldn't "Gated viewership and finishing dead last laurel, Kravis channels and won't. Then after firing its management staff, MTV networks president, Bob Pittman turn to Fred Siebert and Alan Goodman who created MTV's iconic ID's few years earlier to reinvigorate Nickelodeon lead into what many believe to be the channels golden age. I mean, they said it I, I mean, they said they said it, but you went and they said you went in at it that major them shut up research? No. If you do research the history of Nickelodeon, you will see that the nineties is known as it's golden age, whatever the pinball logo was replaced with a logo featuring varied orange background. Most notably in famously the splat design with the Nickelodeon name overlaid in the balloon typeface, which was used in hundreds of different variations over the next twenty five years. So Fred now and also enlisted the help of animator. Is writers producers in doo-wop group the Gye by kinda cool the jive five, which are best known for their nineteen sixty. One hit my true story to create new channel ID's and within six months of the rebranding, Nickelodeon would become the dominant channel in children's programming and remained. So for twenty six years, even in the midst of increasing competition in more recent years from other kid oriented cable channels, such as the Disney channel and Cartoon Network. It also begin promoting itself as the first kids networks due to its status as the first American television network aimed at children. I love that they just kinda took over and we're like, no, no, no, we're the first kids network and the fact that it's true primates even sting a so much more. It is funny though that they had that do op group because I do remember a lot of Nickelodeon channel ID's like their local interests at stuff had a lot of that or. Yeah, yeah. Just. The the jive five. Oh my gosh, but they were some really big, really famous hundred eighty s Nick shows that we're going to get into. Messages..

"Parents, parents ruin everything, rush, true kids aren't kids aren't log. On your life going on tomatoes. Oh my gosh. So moving back to you can't do that on television. The opening sequence which featured the children's television sausage factory, which you haven't seen it. Please YouTube. It was a reference to Terry gilliam's of Monty python fame a Gila mations. So the success in Canada doesn't have to be a portmanteau doesn't you can just leave it at the door, you know? But this was back in the eighties if before everyone was doing it, the success in Canada got Knicks interest in Nickelodeon aired a handful of episodes in they edit it down to a half hour format during nine hundred eighty one as a test run. This is something that I find very fascinating. So over the next few years, the ratings gradually declined in Canada. So by nineteen eighty five, you can't do it. You can't do that on television with seen only once a week day morning, timeslot on TV, but continued to go. To go strong in the US on Nickelodeon where it aired at I five times a week and eventually every day they want every day. Also, I think it was because they started to change their format. Their topics like once they knew that they were going over to the US Airways to Nickelodeon audience in an American audience. I think they kinda lost their Canadian viewership. Oh yeah, I think so too, because you know there, there's like a slight difference to the two different styles of comedy. Uh-huh. Last episode we mentioned the origin of the green slime. Yeah, and the green slime originally featured on. You can't do that on television was later adopted by Nickelodeon as a primary feature of many of it shows. They basically was like, oh, you like that. Okay. We're just going to put that in everything us now. Yeah, there's, there's, we got the slime we're known for the slime viewers in the US where. Given the opportunity to enter the in which was a contest hosted by Nickelodeon that flew the winner to the set of you can't do that on television to be slime so here again is kind of them being like, oh no, we're US now because this was only open to US contestants. There is actually a two thousand four documentary on the show called. You can't do that on film, really? Yes. So all of you can't do that on television heads that Rodas. Venneri, you'll love it home. We told them we sent you and by them. I mean, the guy who's working at the blockbuster that you're gonna talk to. So much began go to blockbuster 'cause they're closed, try Hollywood video that they're still blockbuster open in Alaska. Yeah, that's. That's cool. Interesting missile because they can't go home. They're snowed in. I just people are gonna hate. I don't really buy DVD's anymore. Even if Hector Navarro is obsessed with buying blue rays and I just don't care. Yeah, it's it's kinda hard to do because you got to open up that case, put it in the thing and watch it when I can just press buttons and stuff on. It's not even that will even on ones that I've had to buy because I wanted to see cocoa like right when it came out, like I gotta own cocoa just in case they take it off net flicks or whatever. Is it on its on that flicks now, but it wasn't until I bought it. Yeah, but I bought it. And so I was like, ya'll have it digitally forever like them, fine with that. I don't need the Blu Ray of it anyways. If your, if your house catches on fire, you get, you still have yours. Hector lost. All them blew. My main thing is that it's just takes up space like him in a lot of our special effects. Friends just have walls of Blu. Ray dad? No, I just have already too much stuff. Yeah, you can't do the. Oh yeah. So I actually have a couple of you can't do that on television. Or as I like to say, why c. d. t. OT facts. The long just say when it's that..

"Like let's get outta here. And then you had pinwheel which was reformatted as a daily hour, long series that ran in a three to five hour block format and was the precursor Nick junior, which replace it in one thousand nine hundred eighty eight. When I was born, they knew there like if he's going like this. I was also born during that year. Yes, we establish iffy February. If if he's coming, I feel I feel the thickness of this child and we must prepare for him. But the show was similar to Sesame Street with live action skits mixed with animation shorts and action scenes took place in around the large Victorian style boarding house called the pinwheel house with a pinwheel on one of the peaks and live actors would interact with puppets discussing various concepts, familiar to children's programming, like sharing being considerate, basic learning skills, like colors, numbers, and ladders, and all of the characters lived and worked in various areas in and around the house. This sounds like a mix between Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. Yeah, yeah. Actually, a lot of their formatting, which you'll see when we continue was kind of like that, but it was a formula that worked. Oh, yeah. So I guess that's why, and to be honest, Mr. Rogers didn't like one of their like. Clearly that was kind of I don't want to say it was ripping them off, but he was like, no, I don't like that show. Which we'll get to next up on the docket is America goes bananas with z. So you know, they were saying it was a, it was a teenager oriented variety show presented by Michael young. In Randy Hamilton, it had hip hop music sessions, focusing on mature subjects such as drugs and birth control. That's that is something that I see. We saw Nickelodeon tackle, like we talked about with Linda Eleanor, be in the news segments that she would balodia, but like Nickelodeon was notorious for tackling. So those which MTV did as well. So I do think that they worked alongside each other to provide content for teenagers. So America goes bananas was also regularly shown an effort to interest in educate a teenage target. Audience member had coming like their namesake with the medical flicks, which was technically from the seventy s, but they replayed it in the eighties and it showcase cereals from the twenty s in the forties. In addition to early. Comic one Reeler's and silent. Short films I and was largely in black and white. Can you imagine like would your daughter watch this? That's the thing though. So they used to play these short black and white film, and some of them silent from the twenties and forties on Nickelodeon, and you're right. It was their namesake because the network's original logo incorporated a man looking into a Nickelodeon machine that was placed in the end in those word as you all know, the little like movie players that in the olden days east to look into. And so this was this is supposed to be a young man. He's wearing a top hat and he's dressed, like basically like ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Looking into the end of Nickelodeon that was later replaced by their pinwheel logo typeface. And then the final thing was a show called by the way which by the way I could not find a single thing on island. Yes, I looked up Nickelodeon by the way and it brought me up a ton of other shows that they had an on YouTube. I just couldn't find with that was so I guess if you find it, please. Tweet at us. We're if you watched it, tell us what it was. Yeah, yeah. Okay. So at the time of its launch, Nickelodeon programming aired for thirteen hours. Each weekday from eight AM to eleven pm. That's that's a pretty hefty block and for fourteen hours on weekends from eight AM to midnight. Wow. So then they added these new shows in one thousand nine hundred.

"Name nickelodeon nickelodeon i logo was a cartoon mime looking into a viewer i've never seen this before but apparently it was shown as an interstitial between shows and the mine would always turn the crank when the next program was about to start and i can't imagine the mind logos stuck around for all that long right like if feels like a very outdated idea to even be using a mime in the first place yeah it really was and the network changed logos a few times in those early years eventually they settled on this big silver pinball with the name of the channel ridden in rainbow letters and they with that until the iconic orange splat logo hit the cnn this was in one thousand nine hundred four all right so everybody can remember that one everybody that watch tv in this generation so so how did that come about exactly because it is this strange transition to go for mind pinball to orange slime i wouldn't say it's a very clear cut progression yeah this land actually debuted on the networks i hit show you can't do that on television which we talked about earlier this series it started abroad in nineteen seventy nine but nickelodeon did begin airing it until i guess nineteen eightyone in the us and featured both scripted and improvised skits with a few adults and a rotating cast of teen actors or preteen actress actually and those were the first folks that were slide by nickelodeon so it that point so it was slime was a recurring part of the sketches i mean i feel like that would be hard to write in over and over again so that's the thing apparently the green slime was roger prices idea he was the show's creator any came up with a as kind of a punishment for whenever one of the kids would say i don't know during a sketch right i'm sure you remember that was the code word to get slammed and i always thought it was just like a fun joke but the phrase really got on his nerves and then price also took the dumping water on the actors whenever they said water but that was just because he thought it was funny i mean it was pretty fun exciting as a kid to see this happening and you have course would pretend to have these kinds of scenes at home or you'd say i don't know and pretend to dump slime each other it is funny that he came up with this idea just because the phrase got on his nerves it doesn't really sound like the type of guy you should be working with kids yeah and i think the network was more or less aware of that because the show actually had this rule where no parents were allowed onset and the kids weren't allowed to take scripts home with them either but to be fair when the cast started complaining about how frequently they were getting slammed in soaked price did start paying out bonuses of twenty five or fifty dollars for each slamming so these kids every time they got slime they would get an extra payment and it feels like maybe they would just start saying i don't know on purpose just like an extra fifty bucks but it also feels like a lot of effort just to keep the whole slime gag going i mean it was kind of out of necessity what's interesting is that you can't do that on television was pretty much all the network had going for it at this point and even that wasn't enough because one thousand nine hundred four the channel had lost four million dollars and they routinely finished last in ratings among cable channels i mean it's kinda surprising to look back because that was such a pop show that it it's hard to remember that there was a time where they weren't doing that well so to how did they manage to turn things around so this is so strange but the thing that actually turned it around was the slime or at least i guess this like wild messy attitude you know that's lime represents there was no other place on television where kids could see themselves acting up right alongside grownups or playing games joking around and of course making a huge mess as well and people at the network took notice of this appeal i mean this sounds dumb but that summer i was talking about threes in we all love nickelodeon so much was that instead of being something dished out and given to kids it actually felt inclusive like kids were part.

"Hey podcast listeners welcome to part time genius i'm wilkerson and his always i'm joined by my good friend man gosh how ticket her and on the other side of the soundproof glass wearing a spot on recreation of quayle man you know the quail men costume from from doug of course that's our friend and producer tristen mcneil you remember quayle man right mango vaguely he was the kind of the imaginary superhero persona that doug was always doodling and his little journal you remember this so i liked doug but i was really more of a hey arnold guy myself i'll be honest i'm i'm with you on that but yeah it's tough to choose a favorite from so many of the iconic shows from nickelodeon the networks golden age gave us so many memorable characters in fact i'm not sure if you knew this but nickelodeon actually going through a bit of a resurgence right now and that's thanks largely to the nostalgia that people feel for those early shows yeah it's funny to me because my son was at camp and while they were waiting pickup like they were all watching rocco's modern life and i could leave it feels like a tv show that was so many generations ago well actually if you look at the hollywood headlines from recent years i mean i it's kind of crazy how many old nick shows are currently set for revivals and reboots so i was just making a list of these you've got hey arnold rocco's modern life double dare which is awesome clarissa explains it all are you afraid of the dark invader zim ren and stimpy and the wild thornberrys i mean the list just goes on and on it's got everything on there except doug for some reason yeah but you know that that is of course a notable emission but maybe today's show will drum up some interest in a doug comeback and you know with nickelodeon being back in the limelight now feels like a pretty good time to take a closer look at the networks history and trying to get a sense of what made those nick shows so special in the first place and also i think we both just want to know how they got into the slime business to begin with that's right but i do feel like we're getting a little ahead of ourselves because nickelodeon wasn't always the network that slime built in fact in its earliest days it wasn't even called nickelodeon back in nineteen seventy seven the network launched as pinwheel which was this low budget channel aimed at preschoolers and this was during the earliest days of cable tv and then after two years modest success the network decided to expand its audience and in that process is when it was rebranded as nickelodeon which is i guess that word means kind of like an old movie theater right yes so i actually realized that like nickelodeon was this pop up small theater and the name actually comes from a combination of the admission price which was obviously just a nickel and the greek word for theatre apparently the first of these nickelodeon opened in pittsburgh and this was way back in nineteen oh five and then they popped up all over the country for the next five years or so at least until the larger movie palaces began to replace them and it wasn't something i thought about as a kid i just i didn't even know the word came from anything but it does feel like a little bit of a weird name for kids network and hindsight yeah this true and actually people in general to be a little confused about the word really means and that's partly because of a popular song from the late forties i includes the line put another nickel in the nickelodeon which was i guess more of a coin operated jukebox or music box or piano player i don't know exactly what it was but there's actually a third meaning to nickelodeon which refers to these old timey movie picture viewers where you turn a crank and through a viewfinder you'd watch short vaudeville act or something and it's actually that last one that the network had in mind when they chose the.

"Subscribe at gillette on demand dot com guess what will what's that mango so when i was in third grade cable came into our neighborhood and for one glorious summer my parents got us cable tv and of course we abuse the heck out of it so i saw space balls at least twenty times that summer i watch all these old disney classics on the disney channel and best of all we got nickelodeon wish just transformed our neighborhood and i watched so much nickelodeon during the summers but i'm curious for you what what why did you feel like it transform your summer i mean this is when you can't do that on television was on and i just thought it was the funniest show in the world it almost felt like it was written by kids four kids but double dare was really what caught fire with the other kids in the neighborhood and we didn't know how tv worked so we just assumed one day like w would come to town and they call us on the phone and we just have to be prepared for that moment so everyday honestly every day we'd like quiz each other on trivia questions and then we create these ridiculous physical challenges we had a creek behind our house so we'd get all muddy and like rome through it and we'd like climb trees and whatever we could come up with and you know we practice hard because we knew one day that call was going to come and it had to so so so did it finally come for you i mean of course not you know that hasn't reduced my for nickelodeon and today we're talking about everything from the channels early history to help became synonymous with slime to why really got into the cartoon business so let's dive in.

"Yes she's good she's from mtv to like nickelodeon they they gave their audience a lot of credit they gave them stuff that might be a little above what they normally would want to digest intellectually and you know that the kids are smarter than they are which is good and yeah same with all the shows and i'm not even talking about just the cast being diverse i mean they took on yeah there is a union episode on hey arnold and like most shows yeah that was like a common thing like a teachers strike or something and they're kind of like you know it wouldn't be propaganda but it would be at least teaching like oh yeah this is the basics of what strike is for you can do that you could be politically active disney was just void of that and i feel like the disney kids grew up to be remember the rugrats episode we're chucky funds gun no cool cat back but it does sound like something it'd be in there i think i've seen every episode of the rugrats it's just a blur this point anybody that's like way too rugrats is in adults is like yeah like a weirdo yeah remember candace bailey on u pick live no i don't even know that show oh my god she was so shoes so hot and then she liked did attack of the show if years later and i was like candice like vac like she's following you.

"No people at your your local cable provider what four hundred channels they don't know what's running on everything there's no question about that they don't know what's running on everything but one of the things that is being pointed out is that some of these kids that are on these nickelodeon shows when they were kids now that they're grown up are having some real issues like amanda bines some some real some real tragic issues and it makes you wonder about all the tales of abuse that are coming out there i just well here's okay i'll tell you what it says about her ear in a second on the fox entertainment but how closely do you pay attention to what your kids watch on television or what they do on the internet do you just trust that if you put them in front of the nickelodeon or the disney channel for an hour to that is just fine and at its normal and that it's you know it's it's not dangerous it's just yeah it's not pro or con is just right in in the middle and it's harmless stuff because i'm here to tell you what i saw nickelodeon seven or eight years ago in a pizza place just no way no way five oh one four three three zero zero.
