"The season, LeBron James criticized the NBA for condensing the off season during the pandemic. And earlier this week, he reminded everybody of that, saying That's the reason why we're seeing so many stars go down with injuries. Now. The NBA started the season just 71 days after the Lakers won the title. The league defended itself by saying that the injury rates are normal. I think that maybe they're exacerbated because these are big names getting hurt high profile players getting hurt, not just Role players. "Semi finals. This sixes and hawks pivotal Game five. Philadelphia is where we go here. They were high Steppin monster mashing. 26 point lead at home. 26 point lead at home. And then it vanished into thin air. It went away. Where did it go? Why didn't they win? They had all the momentum. I keep hearing momentum's all that they had a whole uncle Mo on their side. And so it is Atlanta's NBA team, the Hawks who have a 3 to 2 in the Eastern Conference semis, They are now one win away from punching their ticket to the coverage files. And finally, things are lining up for Nate McMillan, the much maligned Nate McMillan. The coach in Atlanta. You look around. You know. Nate McMillan great regular season coach seems over achieved in the playoffs didn't work out well, finally met his equal in a doc Rivers here in the second round. Thirty six percent from three point range and sixteen games at that g. league ignite level. He does have you know yes. What more can i tell you for. Most people listening there is the allure somewhat of the unknown here. I mean only the diehard diehard nba draft have been keeping consistent tabs on jalen green whereas if he had gone to college he would quite clearly be known commodity. He would most certainly play for bruce. Pearl at auburn. Had onto college. And that would. Certainly things would have gone different. "Kyrie out for personal reasons. The net still tag. The sixers are we just at a point with this nba season. Which i i kinda wanna talk about more. Broadly speaking where. We shouldn't have any high expectations for any game. Because anything can happen in all. These games are kind of like at sixty five percent of their normal importance to these guys. Yeah when all the players who were invited to the bubble showed up. There was a lot more i in an importance to the games. Not only because of the black lives matter movement but also the commitment to going into the bubble and the conversations about what that meant for these guys in the sacrifice and the commitment. This is just much more like regular early season basketball where they only played a handful of games in the preseason to three or four so we've seen really lopsided and unexpected of victories or losses just margins in games fifty points at the half everything a lot of guys resting. I feel like we need to just be very tranquil as fans and not get too excited or or or two devastated by losses. Because i think you're going to get these kinds of results silly went out. I think they put up somewhere in like the mid twenties in terms of three pointers. Didn't make them. What do you want to take away from that you know. They wanted to play against k. D. they wanted to play against kyrie. They weren't there. They're coming off a back to back. I don't think that's worth getting upset about if you are a sixers fan and if you the nets hey you can be happy. That's a nice victory. You beat a team. That was top in the conference without your big guns. that's cool. How the nice everybody wins. I think that nets are actually taking this season. Exactly right like the netzer nets are like the coolest five hundred team. I've ever seen that. There were maybe their game above five hundred now and you know like some nights. There guys are there and some nights. They're not and lake when they're everybody's clicking everybody's there they look like this well oiled offensive machine that's capable of scoring one hundred and forty eight hundred and fifty points. And if they're not they're not. Nobody seems to really mind that much. So far this team is kind of like avoided. A lot of the scrutiny. That super teams often get noticed that yet. I think it's because they're still almost theoretical. They didn't have the two guys that were supposed to have last year by design we knew katie was going to sit out and then kyrie got hurt in kind of just ended the season. So they're still almost an idea. And i saw them in the early games this season to annihilate people and we know their firepower. What i think is most interesting about the mets is. They're not really constructed like a lot of ship contenders that they are really just unbe temple. The shotmaking they have these two completely abnormal scores. That are the best at what they do with the best ball handler and difficult shotmaker ever. And the most unstoppable tall weirdos shotmaker in history. There's not a draymond green as connective tissue to tie together. There's not a scottie pippen. there's not a rodman it's just kind of it's it's again it's an idea. Can these guys score so well that they beat you. Maybe do you think that they eventually you're going to need to get our arrived in pippins. Draymond figure like or. Do you think jared allen can be that. Do you think that their bench mob could be that. And like they can kinda forge. I did he have. We gotten to the point with basketball. Where like you could actually. What title with a team like that. That's what i'm really curious about. Because it does strike me as a different model and maybe to your point. Someone like jared. Allen is a very solid player can just become that kind of bulwark in their defense but across the board. I do feel like at some point. They'll have to make a move to bring in. Maybe another wing defender just so many guys on that team really score. I you know. I like carousel avert as a player. But i would hate to be on his team. He has that like he gets the ball and he hunches down and stares at the just kind of trying to run into the lane. And i don't know if that really works with our other talent. They kind of need a ricky rubio in the someone just sort of setback and make an extra pass every now and then i say though it's kinda cool have carries liver at your back pocket if you have nights where kyri and j. d. or we're doing the buddy system and we're not playing together. I'm a fan of his game. But yeah there's something that's so incredibly ball dominant about just how he looks on the court. It's like a little hermit crab like holding the ball and no one else can have see. You are what my favorite twitter follow specifically. Because i often can't tell if bit or not but you have like really like very clear Aesthetic and analytical.

"Welcome to today's episode of the wringer nba show. It's the answer when he was chris. Ryan i'm your host and we recorded this podcast on thursday night following the sixers game against the nets. I talked with ben dietrich but the state of nba rivalries in a little bit later. You'll hear a chat. Had with kyle man about the state of nba player rivalries throughout the league. But we recorded this podcast before we heard the news on thursday night that south korea tested positive for covid. Nineteen curry was in attendance with the sixers at this debts. Me apparently sat on the bench. For the first quarter he had been ruled out of the game. With what was reported to be an ankle injury but returned a positive coronavirus test. During the game and was sent into 'isolation this is obviously going to have a lot of ripple effects throughout the league in terms of what it means for the nets and what it means for the sixers but the most important thing is that people stay healthy and we wish a speedy recovery and were thinking about everybody out there. This is an incredibly difficult. Nba season to manage from a logistical level of keeping. Everybody healthy keeping everybody safe as just. It's unlike anything we've kind of dealt with before and this is this is one of those is gonna really be a stress test reliigous stress test for these teams and hope everything works out. Okay so let's get into this podcast. Anyway we still talked about the game itself which the sixers lost at what it meant for the state of eastern conference rivalries whether the nba still had rivalries. We had a fun conversation about that but we did want a shot out the the developing new story that we had so. Let's get into the show. This episode is brought to you by both twenty four from the makers of gatorade introducing bolt twenty four when it comes to advanced hydration twenty four chiefs it really real with no artificial.

"The milwaukee bucks and the miami heat. And that's interesting you know. It's interesting that harden is trying to essentially conduct a free agency from the pulpit of of a guy under contract you know it's like who has leverage in the situation and the other thing that's really affecting this entire conversation is this idea of player which i think we've heard a lot of people talk about the player empowerment ara- at a i. I think that that is at once. Accurate and accurate way of describing this time they were kinda going through in the nba. What when you see that is happening. Right now is something that really only applies to about twelve. Nba players is being used to brush the entire league. This idea that one can decide at any given moment that they're not happy in their situation so they want to be treated and only they want to be treated they want to be traded to this specific place and that is somehow undoing the competitive balance of the league i think is a little bit of a fallacy. We really only have a couple of examples of this happening over the last couple of years. He had quite leonard kyrie irving. Anthony davis jimmy butler paul george and now harden you know and i think that there has been some free agency stuff. There's been pressure put in different places but for the most. I think you have to ask yourself how many guys could actually call their shot like this. You like if if call our walks in to missouri's office as his trae be right now does not even make a sound. Do we have a week of conversation. About kyle lowry trying to call his own shot. Call his own destination and talk his way out of toronto for all. we know. there's been situations like this before with mid level players with replacement players with role players bench players where these guys have been like. Yeah you know what this isn't working for me. I thought i was going to be getting about twenty five minutes game. i'm only get in twelve. I'm not gonna get a contract. You gotta treat me somewhere. It's probably happened. You know the player empowerment idea seems to mostly apply to all nba level talent and the idea. That teams are on a clock. That ticks faster.

"If you're a player how do you build through? How do you go through with this? What are you want if you're player van? I don't know how good you were who, but if you're if you're a basketball player. Where do you thinking about in this? Man Look I i. think it was a couple of nights ago. I. Think George Hill. Howson George Hill Talk Right. And he was he was talking about the fact that he didn't really did feel like they should be playing anyway with their anyway and I was I was listening to listen to him. He doesn't want to be there. I'M looking at him right and they wanted to talk about the game. He's talking about the game, but he's also emoting in a very in a very real way. He's. Conflicted and not conflicted but angry about the position that he's in not that anybody made him play. Anyone compelled him to be somewhere that he didn't want to be but this is weighing on his mind. By. It's it's something that he's thinking of. So imagine being sort of in that position. Not We all gotta go to work. We're not. We're not. We're not. We're not treating NBA players as if there's some sort of special UNICORNS we're not. But. We also some of us is society don't have the burden to be as directly outspoken on these issues. As we do a celebrities do as high profile individuals do so they can't think about basketball they're thinking about all of these different things and it's got to be tough and it's also got to be tough plan on a bit court that says black lives matter wearing a black lives matter t shirt wearing a slogan on the back of Your Jersey all it is, and then when you turn on your TV after the game drained, it's happened again. Am I going through the motions or I'm having an effect? Because there's a part of this. That can be that can be it can sort of be looked at at if you're a player as am I doing something that's making all of this more palatable to Americans right am I out there playing, give them giving them escapism giving them. All of this stuff with society has an earned it. You know what I mean, and you don't WanNa feel complicit in that and I'm not saying the eagles guys do I'm just saying I'm sure part of them feel like, no why would I give you something to watch on a on a Wednesday night when this manages just eight in the back, just fix this and then you can watch some basketball and I'm not mad at that and especially with with black minute women in all the pronouns being African Americans. We have to deal with not just working, but also working with that trauma on a daily basis right? We have to work with dealing with. Doing the best that our job but also thinking about what's going on in the world and you know van is van Leith in right. But he's also nobody cares about that. When he walked down the street right you're still a black man I'm still a black man to we still have to deal with these things and. Kyri. Gary. Urban brought up this conversation before they were going here. Bought, it was a distraction that you know. They're coming back to play and coming back to work amid all this stuff than I i WanNa get to your opinion Robert I want to get this to van. You believe that it was a distraction to go back in here and I can't say. I'll we're all here because we love the NBA. Rob Loves NBA Logos. NBA NBA can't say. because. The reality is that just an I bombed out. I'm super excited like I said I bummed out that I'm not GonNa Watch Lebron close out the trail blazers tonight. Sure. And at the time, that's sports was coming back. Was it did it not feel like Elixir for me Personally, I watched baseball. Make them on who does that. Mean so so so like you know I can't say I can't say whether or not. It was a distraction I. Don't think that it was, but I can't be sure I know right now. The players feeling like they need to do more I'm completely on the side of that now I don't disagree with High Rethinking That's distraction, but I can't say whether it was or whether it wasn't I just don't know. Because a feelings that they have now is a feelings that they had before the bubble riot and this suggests cops just going to stop killing black people in the streets. Not. They're not gonNA stop doing that anytime soon. I just don't see. What more we can do right now, and that's that's why I'm kind of. Pessimistic about a season happening right because. Nothing's really changed since George Floyd die or got killed right there's nothing that has changed. Do you see. Do you see them coming back anytime soon rob I think there will be some kind of intermediate resolution having it on video makes a lot of difference put putting in front of People's faces and saying this is irrefutable. You can think whatever you think about Oh he had. He did this and his past, which is irrelevant piece of information. You see what police did to him in the street other. People witnesses in front of them what are the cops doing when there aren't cameras when we aren't looking and I think what's meaningful about this situation we can't take the Milwaukee piece out of this the fact that the bucks the nearest the most proximal team to the shooting itself is important but this is a group that has some skin game. This is a team that plays in the most segregated city in America. A city that they represent a now have to go home to, and the fact that they're the team that's leading the charge on this I think it's meaningful. I can see that I just. As we're as we're again, this is a fluid pod shrive blakely of NBC Sports Boston just said that both teams from the Celtics and the Raptors are leaning towards not playing game one of their series and you that is a huge deal of going forward. So I don't know you got any last words van. What do you think? We love the NBA Yes, we love the NBA. We love watching the NBA is been great to see some of the storylines that have come out of bubble. Bobble basketball has been great in fantastic we it's felt like. For A moment that we were back to some.

Even they had had some level of self control the whole thing Go off some Bucks Games. Please goodness sakes let me just say. This is a good opportunity. You people don't know what you're watching. Oh come on. You don't Know Kevin. You don't know what you don't know what you're watching sh you know. There's four great defenders in front of the guy and he never comes out from the basket. Doing stand around the basket. This is I was just ashamed to be got drafted second. You trick the world into thinking you're amazing defender. Like College basketball. You just set the guy in front of the basket play over a decade in the NBA over a decade and he suddenly became Bill Russell. Or maybe it's the system you'd make me mad. I knew you'd make me mad before this is over. I was just trying to make a friendly suggestion. Well now we'll have at least three weeks for people to write Lebron. Mvp articles can go back and do that. It's going to be very interesting over the next couple of weeks. Kevin Suras man stay safe everybody. I don't know where this is going to go. I don't know. "I think I had him ranked twelfth or thirteenth in the fourteen drafts. I think the main thing that I'm a little surprised about is that over the years. His defense has not been quite as good as it was at the college level in college. He was a consistently high effort defender and part of that was the level of competition. But one thing he always gave was intense effort. And maybe maybe part of that is like the circumstances. He's been part of Orlando Phoenix New Orleans, not all like having horrible seasons. But he's never been on a good contending team. Maybe it's been his environment. I don't know. I would be curious to see him in a role where he's not he's always been a starter to for the most part. I would like to see him in a role where he can come off the bench. A winning team and get back to what he wasn't college and on a high level where he did. Right. He did defend any did rebound. He's a great would if because as you're talking about him he's been with all these rat teams. What if he's a spur? You know, what I'm saying what if they get them with their shooting coach? And what if they get within that system, which he looked kinda guy that would fit within something like that that maybe maybe it's all different, you know, so much of these guys success and failure can be dependent upon how they fit out and who they get drafted by. But I haven't given up on him completely. And he's obviously had a good voice on earth with him his rookie year magical in twenty five games had to head coaches. They won thirty five games the second season twenty nine games his third season. And then he got traded from Orlando to Phoenix his fourth season. So losing count right here. But I believe he's had a different coach every single season of his NBA career. And he's never been on a winner. Either. I believe that's the case Vaughn Borrego skylines Vogel. Then he got traded the Phoenix, and then he signed with New Orleans this offseason. So I pretty sure a different coach every year of his career. That's crazy. So certainly wanted to highlight him because five consecutive triple doubles. It's quite the accomplishment in terms of games that are going out tonight. Let's quickly talk about the NBA watch of the night. It is the Lakers at the bucks on NBA TV. It's eight PM eastern time, which would have been I'm certain that we would have circled this a few months ago as a monster game down the stretch. Instead virtue of what is the Lakers. It is not necessarily a monster game yet, it will feature Janas who all eyes are on because he might very well be the MVP. We're going to be talking about if any of the awards can be decided in these last twelve games in a moment. But Lakers books tonight NBA TV at eight pm. What intrigues you? I think more than anything else. Chris. It's the poetic aspect of this game. Where here we have Jano sensitive Kumho who is possibly the MVP leading the one seeded bucks into the postseason where they could make a finals run, maybe win the finals with Jaanus. And then here we have LeBron James who was going to miss the postseason for the first time since his second season in the league the oh four oh five season for the first time since then, and he's looking older he got blocked the other night by Mario his own. Yeah..

"Does right now what do you think certainly a possibility last night we saw villanova take twenty seven of their thirty seven shots for three so that's nearly half and the houston rockets in the nba do take fifty one point one percent of their shots from three like just over half so villanova certainly does run what resembles an nba offense which made less sense game especially especially exciting to watch and the guy who took advantage of that chris dante even though unbelievable homes by him yeah for your purposes because i know you spend a lot of time evaluating players for in upcoming nba draft for your purposes does them being able to it doesn't feel like evaluation might be able to get a little bit easier if college more mirrored what the nba looks like because that's been one of the real challenges right with so many of these cases how does it translate to the next i mean i would love for more of the things to be adopted obviously the line is shorter but especially defensive three seconds if i could have anything that would be the thing that i would take out of college basketball that would help with evaluation for the next level i would think in terms of driving lanes in terms of guys not being able to just stand right in front of the stupid basket but do you know don't you think that if villa if more team started looking like villanova may be the evaluation process gets a little bit easier that struck me last night maybe but also maybe not because the skill levels is close on par is nba basketball understand but you know i think you know moving the three point line out to the nba distance would help you know adding defensive three second violations to make pains run less zone that would help as well as a shot clock as well there's those a long list of things really here's saying i'm watching villanova last night and i think you can watch those guys this is just me i watch those guys and i i don't think it's.

"As regards very slightly so the thing is is they need to change the roster and if they're going to do that then may put immense pick on the table but i don't think they should put the netts pick on the table because i think that's more valuable to them looking over the next four or five years than it is to anybody else very strange situation to because of the guy that put together the construct of that team you know there's all these stories coming out that the owners having more say in things than in the past and i think people felt like david and driven yeah the dead they griffin was in charge and you know that was such a strange story a team that had been to the nba finals uh the amount of times that they had and and then swung that massive deal where they were going to be making a big change over the summer and now so the guy that like kinda put this altogether and it was his vision at least in some way he's not there anymore right and and they went out there you remember they weren't tried to get tanti billips you look at you go boy i guess he is in a which are the ability an wonder why i wonder why her right right and so now it'll be very fair saying to see what they do at this trade deadline because i feel like we had kind of a beat on them and it at least had a feeling about uh about griffin and kind of his thoughts on things in the way he constructed rosters i mean i have no idea where you start or what you do if you're the cavaliers because outside of signing guys the get waived their cut this is your opportunity to change things to improve this team and inevitably will have to happen a you know if it's gonna happen at a big way by thursday right it's interesting with cleveland because it's pretty clear that the relationship with between broaden the angle british probably one of the reasons with the poor relationship that he might have right though the cavaliers i don't think there's anything view of.
