U.S. Employers Add 1.8 million Jobs In July
"Today. We got a decent but not great economic report to kick off the weekend, the Labor Department told us that employers kept bringing jobs back in July 1.8 million. Overall, the unemployment rate fell about 1% to 10.2%. That's a little higher than the worst of the great recession, but certainly better than April's 15%. We asked marketplaces Mitchell Hartman to look into which jobs are coming back and which might not If the job losses early in the pandemic, we're a torrent. 22 million jobs washed away in just about six weeks. The rebound since then has been more like a steady current. Around nine million jobs gained back and the backto work flows been strongest in low wage service jobs that were savaged early on, says Julia Polic, a ZIP recruiter. The largest gains were in leisure and hospitality and in retail Job stocking shelves at reopened stores, serving drinks at bars and restaurants cleaning people's teeth at dentist's offices. But job gains slowed considerably in July compared to June, And that's because as many cities and states had to pause there re openings to fightback surges in Kobe cases. Businesses couldn't really resume business as usual. The jobs recovery is doing better in sectors less affected by government covert restrictions and consumers. Caution, says Robert Frick at Navy Federal Credit Union. Own construction and construction in general is doing well. Manufacturing is doing relatively well. I love those are important to the economy because it supports service jobs. But Julia Pollock has a warning for professionals whose jobs depend on the consumer economy Among high wage occupations where most workers can work from home that typically are recession proof we see stagnation and even continued decline. In July. Employers cut jobs in business management advertising computer systems in commercial
Rosamund Pike on new movie 'Radioactive'
"There is a wonderful movie for you to see right now called radioactive and it stars my guest Rosamund Pike as Madame Curie. So this is amazing. Russ welcome. Welcome to Nice. It's really really nice to see you I haven't seen you since. We'll know know exactly when you were pregnant. So I guess that son is walking around now being five or six years old exactly that he's five and he's he's little stuntmen so. I've got. Might follow his mother in some way. Yes. He vote him falling through a very big high everyday but. I won't go into that anyway in in watching this movie, which is so beautifully done to me. It's just Marchan as director and putting what this life is in not at all stodgy bio kick manner. No, it's great and I'm looking at you and I'm thinking of your journey first movie bond girl. End of the day, I can remember you in that saying this line probably going to get this. Wrong but it was I know all about you 007. Sex for, dinner. Death for breakfast CEST. I couldn't you couldn't make conventional bio-pic about Madame Curie she was too much of a rebel in a she was unruly element in has she discovered to unruly and she was Nanri element. So you needed margin direct with a bit of rock and roll and kind of approach that was going to kind of exploded the promises will she's got that and she's got kind of your mischief. We know are remember when I first met you I thought well. She's going to be quite imperious. You know she's she does stage working the said you're just mad. Which is which is Great. Mischief I really love that would be to mischief is a great great word condemn. Yeah I had a I had a birthday party recently thought was the kind of that was the code of conduct for the Party. was mischief not s mischief. As it should be you know even in a pandemic, but you know I wanna go back to this because again I said this radioactive is not like any bio pic I've seen why is that? What attracted you to it? You know everybody would say, yes, I'd love to play manicured. There's been a movie made back in the forties we're greer Garson, and Walter Pidgeon were claimed that but it has that look of okay. This is regulation they're not there seems like. In radioactive that all the rules breath. School is it. You know it's GonNa. Be Poked Science. Oh Woman who you know she she looked navy look at the pictures. She looks sadly conventional. Yes, she's the right spurious and we can dress this up than people can think we're giving them some chased food period drama. Deliver you know we explode the be the boundaries and I felt that with anyone. Who any character who could legitimize you to to flush Ford it would be someone like Mary Carey with her brain, which would have had an inkling would've had an inkling of what the future could hold with this discovery of the phenomenon of radioactive not so. It was exciting to me. And I probably could even. Could have been pushed found from my case even.
Senate Holds Confirmation Hearing For Trump's New Pick For Ambassador To Ukraine
"Update now on two important diplomatic vacancies. One is the post of U. S ambassador to the Ukraine. The last woman who held that Senate confirmed job was a central figure in President Trump's impeachment. And now the president's pick for the job is facing some lingering question in his own confirmation hearing. NPR's Michelle Kelemen reports President Trump's ouster of the ambassador to Ukraine featured prominently in his impeachment trial. Marie Ivanovich face to smear campaign by Trump's private lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who had been pressing Ukraine to get dirt on Vice President Joe Biden. Senator Bob Menendez, the ranking Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, says that's still happening. Giuliani Esteban, Savory Ukrainian characters have not let up their efforts to use Ukraine to interfere in U. S politics. Others in the Senate seem intent on amplifying their efforts. Menendez wants the new nominee, retired Lieutenant general Keith Dayton, to avoid playing into this and avoid any meetings with Giuliani. Senator I'm not going to commit to that, because I believe that as an ambassador, I would have the obligation to meet with any U S citizen and hear them out. It was a home. Dayton has been a defense attache in Moscow, a security advisor for the U. S on the Israeli Palestinian conflict, and, in recent years has run the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany. He's well versed on Ukraine, but his answers frustrated both Menendez and another Democrat Chris Murphy. So at the end of the hearing, he did offer this reassurance. Ify is the U. S ambassador and key Have any indication that there is any kind of election interference going on using Ukraine as a azalea ever to do that? I would, of course, report that directly to this committee. I think you have a right to know that I think I have an obligation to report that to Dayton says his priorities in the country, if confirmed, would be to help Ukraine fight corruption and beef up Ukraine's Navy and Air force. Next door in Belarus. The U. S is reviving diplomatic relations in part because of Russia's aggression. In Ukraine. Career diplomat Julie Fisher has been tapped to run the U. S embassy in Minsk. Our relationship with Belarus languish for more than a decade. But after Russia's illegal seizure and occupation of Crimea, and it's manufactured war in Ukraine stone best region, we began to see signs of interest from the Belarussian sign. Belarus recently bought US crude oil to decrease its dependence on Russia and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Minsk earlier this year. But the's warming ties will be tested by an election this Sunday, and Fisher face questions about that the first component to ensuring that we can continue to grow this relationship. Not see steps backward in the conduct of this presidential election. The long time ruler Alexander Lukashenko is facing a united opposition in the run up to this election, and his regime has been cracking down. There will be no international monitors, though Fisher says the U. S embassy will be watching the vote closely. What we are trying to get Johnny is basically to ensure that there is space to ensure their space for more than one voice. In this country. Lukashenko kicked out the less U. S ambassador to Belarus in 2008 after the US accused his government of human rights violations and tighten sanctions. Michelle Kelemen NPR NEWS Washington

Dota Pit Is Done, Here Comes OMEGA League
"Yes, we are Doda pitch has concluded cinder. and. I personally didn't get to watch this tournament. because my sleep scheduled disallowed it as you know, but `Nigma did beat alliance in a best of five grand files three, two two. So a very up close series talking to this tournament. It actually just had a lot of mean closer towards the end right to to ones, and then the three to which is great for the region. Right. If the teams are close in keeping games off each other worth noting was the absence of secret obviously who have one Basically everything the last two to three months in Europe So them not being there might have leveled the playing field a bit. It's hard to say how much the other teams have caught up when secret aren't part of the tournament. But obviously, `NIGMA great confidence boost. It's been awhile since they've been doing this well Close finals, five games every game was I mean it's kind of a patch right? Most Games were like thirty to forty five minutes. There were no marathons and no GIG stomps but you know it's it's kind of just your your average game time. I guess have you played assemblyman a game yet by the way? Have still have not I don't. I might have actually. have. You finally been introduced the I'm trying to remember. If I had a game with a I. Don't I like maybe I had one actually I'm not positive how it might have happened but did it was one game? Okay. That's incredible. I mean it's not that important. It's to me they're the coolest items in the game, but anyway continue. No. Yeah. So I mean we. We should just I think just focus on the podium, right? Okay. Third Alliance, second `Nigma I and also scary team. Veasley. Teams at any time looked like all three could win because of how the series went so. Yeah good stuff going forward into the Omega League which is a much bigger tournament in terms of price pool we are casting in that by the way if you missed we started casting yesterday. Yes. currently casting their close qualifiers for the European region and that will be casting that over the next week roughly. Make sure you guys check that out actually I. Didn't even I think we're we're not just doing closed qualifiers. We'll doing some of the normal pre playoff stage so I think other than yesterday. So going forward today after this podcast actually will be doing one series an after today, we have three more days in the next two weeks span that were doing games. And then. I'm done at the very least your your schedule is going to be like, but don't know. I don't know anything about what I'm doing. Is this the first? Tournament secret is. After their break feeling that break has been that long it's been like a weeks is the first one. Yeah. I've been two weeks is a decent on time and Doda. To be honest I three weeks. So just to refresh people, EG is going to be part of the EU division on this. So it's quite staff I mean we might as well just mentioned all the teams team secret navy liquid VP flight, a moon E. G. OG alliance `Nigma and NIP, and then to close qualifiers which I mean we can go off on a limb and say who we think are GonNa win because I. Think. Viking. Is definitely like major. and. Then the secondary team, it could be bait. A. Pires these days think hell-raisers quotas well as get their stuff together like there's there's multiple options but I would definitely say clear favorites from nearby. To get first place. In those qualifiers. They've been pretty impressive. They've been they've definitely been very good Yeah. I mean I think this tournament is worth like just emphasizing bit that this might be quite possibly the best tournament of the year at this point because with the development of covert I, don't know if we're going to get any big land until the years over If things start opening up in October or whatever tournaments right now can bank on it. So they can start booking venues and planning everything. So it means if there's announcements of of stuff getting a bit less extreme in, let's say two months than they need a preparation period. So I think at this point, any big land this year's just very unlikely could add this online ones mega stack tournament at least for the West there's probably going to be bigger tournaments for the east than this but. Yeah, it's a it's a very big western tournament. So if you if you WANNA watch some of the best daughter, this is your chance to maybe watch the biggest turn. It says it goes through to September six is actually true correct Dan. So it's a really long term. So this close qualifiers and then there's a big group stage and then there's playoffs. Are Okay. This is gonNA. Be Dumb to bring this up. What are we casting for? The next two is adjust close squall. Here's my actually mistaken. I think it's just close quote Holy Shit. I think the Games I believe the group the group stays in Europe starts August fourteenth. My birthday and I. Good. Let. Me Just check the America's America Start Sixteenth and Asia is already ongoing with the group stage. That's August. I, sixteen they're way ahead. So the playoffs and group stage of the main event. If you WANNA call it's three weeks. That's crazy. That's

Why Meditation is Not About Stopping Your Thoughts
"Coming, up on this week's mini episode of the broken brain podcasts. The reason you're meditating is for the other. Twenty three hours or twenty three and a half hours in your day. You're not meditating for that moment. That's not where the dividends show up in your life. I've worn them drew pruitt host of the broken brain podcast. If there was something, you do every to boost your focus and productivity feel energized, reduce stress sleep better. Maintain a positive outlook and support Paul by health. Wouldn't you do it? In this week's mini episode of the podcast I, speak with Megan Monahan Emily Fletcher and Light Watkins all three of my dear friends about the common myths about meditation, the Science of Meditation and how it impacts the brain and how to bring meditation into your life in a practical and tangible way. Let's listen in starting with my interview with my dear friend Megan Monahan a certified choper meditation teacher and author of don't hate meditate. So the number one thing that I hear all of you come up to me or you spiritually slide into my DM's and you think that you're going to get out of meditating by saying to. To, me, He Meghan I try to meditate I. tried to start my thoughts. I try to silence. My mind just can't do it. So saying, but I can't do it and and I will happily retort with as long as you have a pulse, you're going to have thoughts. Meditation is not about stopping your thoughts and silencing your mind I. Don't know who created that sound bite, but it has just been haunting all of teachers for ever and ever and ever at this point. So be really okay with the fact that you're going to have thoughts meditation I like to say that meditation is it's almost like eavesdropping. So. If you can recall a time when you are in public member when that happened and we would be overhearing a conversation, maybe you're in a restaurant, maybe you're on a training maybe out in the world and you overhear a conversation most of the time you're not going to jump into a strangers conversation and input your thoughts, right? Because that would be strange. That's kind of like what meditation is meditation is when you get to start taking a step back and just eavesdropping. Eavesdropping on the activity eavesdropping on your own boss eavesdropping on sounds that you can hear or physical sensations in your body, and it's just creating space between you and that activity and practicing doing that while you're meditating and then taking that sort of mental strength that awareness outside of meditation and putting that into practice when you're in your waking state meditations, not about stopping your thoughts number. One thing that I hear. So if that's your excuse, sorry, you have to meditate. The other people say to me a lot and it will happen after class or after with client or whatever it is. They'll say, oh, that was a really good one and I always stop them. And and just reframed not a bit because I. Think we have this expectation that. That it should feel really relaxing that it should that we should have some insight that we should maybe have some Aha moment that maybe we have some clarity navy. We feel a deep sense of stillness that we had access to all of a sudden there. These very cool meditation, need very technical term moments that you can have when you meditate and it's cool when those happen. If any of those things, I just described show up if you see colors if you. Feel a connection to yourself. That's really dope and those meditations are really fun. But that meditation is just as good as the meditation. I did this morning where my fire alarm went off in the middle there. Equally good one was just more fun. When was more enjoyable. The only bad meditation is the one that you don't do. So I think the other the other myth that I would kind of dispel as that nothing needs to happen for it to work in the moment, you just have to do it not on link working out. You know if I'm if I go out for a run, there will be days when when I am running. Running in two minutes in, it feels like I have never run before in my life, and it's so laborious and meaningful, and then I have the days where I feel like I could run marathons on all of those runs were equally beneficial. I just liked one of them were. So basically advocating for the removal of judgment on a medication. Yes. Like the expectation because what happens so to just push it a little bit what happens when we do say that was a good one or somebody says, oh. Man I really knew that that was a good one. What's the fear or what's the concern when somebody judges a meditation as good or bad? So number one, I think with any kind of judgment. It stops being a neutral place for you and I think one of the biggest blessings of meditation is that it's this kind of neutral landscape that you get to rest, and so I think if you have an expectation is already a sense of meaning that you're applying to it that isn't going to serve you and and I think you've set yourself up. Up to two, almost have an out which I'm not a fan of I. Think we should all meditate every day for the rest of our lives. So if you have a string of meditations where it doesn't feel great, you're kind of Ansi or where you hear the leaf blower every time or where the dog is bothering you. Then all of a sudden. Oh, it's not going. Well, I'm gonNA stop doing
Obituary: Herman Cain
"Herman Cain helped define the American black conservative movement. He also set the stage for trump by Philip Elliott. Herman. CAIN remembered the nineteen ninety-six moment that changed his political trajectory as clearly as any in his life. The businessman was advising Jack Kemp's vice presidential campaign and accompanied the boss to the iconic Sylvia's soul food restaurant in Harlem for an event a man in the crowd shouted out to Kane and colleagues Black Republicans, there's no such thing. The. Same Man in canes telling called them Uncle Toms. The episode. So angered Kane that when he got home from that campaign swing, he switched from a registered independent to a card carrying member of the Republican. Party and over the next quarter century, the child of the segregated south became one of the best known black Republicans in the country briefly rising to be his party's presidential front runner for the two thousand twelve nomination and remaining one of the most quotable stars in conservative media. So committed to his party's stick it in the I e host was Cain that he flew to Tulsa. Oklahoma for President Donald, trump's first return to the campaign trail after one hundred thousand US corona virus deaths despite dire warnings from public health experts at that endure rally on June twentieth the stage four colon cancer survivor posed for pictures without wearing a mask and sat in the packed stands with fellow fans of the president on June twenty-ninth Cain tested positive for the corona virus. On July second, his aides announced he had been hospitalized while fighting the disease his twitter account continued to criticize mask wearing and to promote unproven endorsements of hydroxy. On. July. Thirtieth CAIN aides announced he had died from the White House trump attributed the death to the thing called the virus cain among the most prominent Americans to die during this pandemic who was seventy four In many ways, Kane and trump were cut from the same cloth neither had been elected to any political post before running for the White House, both delighted in needling the Republican Party's establishment and the mainstream press they shot from the hip campaigned in slogans and didn't much care to learn the details. Both men were dogged by allegations of sexual affairs and inappropriate behavior, and both denied the allegations they proved disqualifying for Kane who ended his bid in December twenty eleven under intense scrutiny. But they did not derail trump just one election cycle. Later, they were also both savvy exploiters of the media. In saying things they knew would provoke outrage and thus amplify the celebrity at the core of their bids indifference toward if not hostility against what had come before was a cornerstone of their strategy, not a flaw. CAIN was born in Memphis in nineteen forty-five to a domestic worker mother and a janitor father when his dad was hired to be the chauffeur for the head of coca-cola, the family moved to Atlanta where cain would graduate from Morehouse College. He then completed his graduate studies at Purdue University after civilian service in the navy from there Kane moved from engineer to executive with Pillsbury and its subsidiaries of Burger King and Godfather's pizza where he would be its CEO. In nineteen, Eighty Eight, he oversaw Godfather's. From, Pillsbury throughout the same time yelled positions with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. That part of his resume lead trump to consider cane for a position in his administration a move that drew dissent from fellow Republicans who were not eager to revisit the allegations against Kane for three years. Kane led the national. Restaurant Association a lobbying arm for the industry that paid settlements to at least two women who detailed canes unwanted advances. His was not a typical career in his post. CEO Years Cain became a sought after motivational speaker and unsuccessful presidential candidate in two thousand and a Senate one in two thousand four. As, the tea party movement started to organize after Barack Obama's election to the White House. Kane emerged as one of its strongest spokespeople when the twenty twelve election cycle began kane decided to run the scrappy est of campaigns focused on untrue additional travel schedule that often seemed more like a book tour than an organizing effort. His novel nine, nine nine tax plan proposing a nine percent corporate business flat tax, a nine percent personal income flat tax and a nine percent national sales tax drew I rolls from economists but curiosity from voters. Antipathy toward front runner Mitt Romney proved sufficient to give cain a chance to rise in the late summer and fall of twenty eleven until his personal life just proved too much. But he didn't shrink from podcast life. Instead he became a ubiquitous voice and reliable critic of Democrats
U.S. Navy's first Black female fighter pilot gets her Wings of Gold
"Truly historic moment in the military the first African, American female fighter pilot just got her wings. But as Alice reports, there is still so much more to be done. After, years of preparation Lieutenant Madeline swagger is living her dream soared through barriers. Love the fast planes she's the first black female fighter pilot in the nearly one hundred, ten year history of naval aviation like feeling the exhilaration and getting back in the seat a little bit that was awesome on Friday. Lieutenants wiggle her wings of gold. She aimed high early inspired by her parents and they told me that I can be whatever I wanted to be and what she wanted to be what she saw we go see the blue angels in Town I. Don't remember specifically how old I was but. They were just so cool. I Love Them. To See Black Navy pilots. In fact, only one point nine percent of Navy aircraft fighting unit pilots are black this summer a special task force was created to address the issues of racism and sexism. We must work to identify and eliminate individual and systemic racism within our fours. I'm sorry to see that it has taken. So long to have more black women forty years ago Brinda Robinson was the first black. Woman Navy pilot what do you say to the naysayers who say well, they made it easier for you and now they've really made it easier for lieutenants Waigel. I was already flying airplanes before I got into the navy and the only reason why I was able to get there and that was my credential is far outweighed. Any of the guys that I was with I wish that we were saying Oh. Yeah. Just as another black woman whose line airplanes and she's a fighter pilot. Would retire top gun instructor says, it's Waigel a Naval Academy graduate deserves for. Wings. Handed out, you have to earn them certainly have to have the smarts to be able to be a tactical aviator. Awesome to for women who had never even been in an airplane before she joined the Navy I think that representation is important Because we are a very diverse nation, so I would like everyone to believe that they can achieve whatever they want to do. Now top of field flying high into history
House, Senate pass bills to study the number of cancers striking military pilots
"PASSES BILLS TO STUDY MILITARY PILOT CANCERS FROM mcclatchy Washington bureau little bit late on that. I did I was GONNA say anything but okay. The Department of Defense would be required to identify how many of the current or former aviators have been diagnosed with cancer in in bills passed by the House and Senate this week a study long sought by military pilots who have questioned why there are so many serious illnesses in their community. The legislation was included in both chambers versions of the seven hundred and forty billion fiscal year twenty, twenty, one national defense authorization. Act following a series of stories by mcclatchy on the alarming clusters of cancer among current or former military aviators. I'm one of those including four commanding officers at a Premier Navy weapons testing base in California who have died of cancer since two thousand fifteen. Oh let me clarify I'm not one of those that has been diagnosed with cancer but I am a former military aviator. Two versions of the twenty one, twenty, one spending bill will now go to house and Senate negotiators to iron out differences before being sent to President Donald Trump to be signed into law. Betty semen the wife of one of the four commanding officers at Naval Air Weapons Station China. Lake. died of cancer. Welcome to the important milestone. She says since loving since losing I'm sure she loved him too since losing my husband I have met too many other families on the same unwanted journey. We all share a universal prayer that no other family will have to go through a similar loss today brings us one step closer to that realization Miss Seaman said in an e mail to mcclatchy but that's a great name. Her husband's name was a commander Semen S. e. a. m. a. n., and he is a naval officer. Wow that was he was in the if he was in Canada heath now be a sailor. So his last name. Is they're getting rid, of semen. Because of the obvious connotations. Changing the position to say okay. Let's see. Senator Dianne Feinstein from California introduced the military aviators. Cancer Incidence Study Act after mcclatchy reported that military aviators may be at a higher risk of developing certain cancers. Let's see. There was a little bit of information here. The database would include every service member since nineteen sixty one who served in an aviator role. The legislation defines aviators, members of the aircrew such as pilots and Napa who they included navigators in their two. Members of the grand create usually asleep on me. I did that on purpose because we have several navigators listen to the show. Let's see. WHO SHOULD WE? I'm offended at airline pilot guy dot com has the email address. And members of the ground crew who worked on the aircraft pilots who have been lobbying for the legislation wanted to ensure that ground crew such as enlisted personnel who worked to launch jets aircraft carriers were included. Because, they were exposed to many of the same radar emissions or fuels. The bill requires a database to be completed within a year. So I guess they're assuming that. The radar emissions and fuel and the jets have something to do with this. With these cancers. Anyway. So that's good. That they're doing this and I guess that. I will be contacted at some point. To probably. Yeah to fill out some kind of survey regarding my health,

"So this letter comes out. And you know this captain is really making the case that I need to get my sailors off of this ship because it's just not safe for them. I can't guarantee their safety and were not at war. He makes this point of. We don't need to be in a wartime stance with can get people off this ship and very quickly. There's this kind of jumbled response from the Navy one superior comes out supporting the captain and then acting head of the navy comes in and says no no no no. This is not how we do this spray. Yeah I you know I want to give I wanNA give Crozier's chain of command a little benefit of doubt here because of the unprecedented nature of the problem that he was really losing to them. This is what I mean when I say the viruses a bit of an existential problem for the military part of that is because the service members of every rank is been trained to see lethality readiness for combat as the highest values higher than your personal well-being. It's ground into you from the first day you put on uniform and what Crozier The Roosevelt's captain is basically suggesting posing to his superiors. Is that's an easy thing to tell servicemembers for a service members to say into practice in a shooting war our objective is clear but when there's no violent threat on the horizon how much of this lethal readiness is too much and so he made that point of we can fight still if you need us to even with the virus raging. Because that's what we do. We are sailors worship. But we're not at war with anybody right now. So there's no reason for my sailors to die and that seems pretty clear. Cut To all of us who have several weeks to sit home and think about it as we do when we read it online for. Crozier's commanders in the navy and for the entire. Dod This is not just a challenge but really a gauntlet that's been thrown of how much of our readiness posture are. We really ready for side in order to protect our people from the Cyrus That's I think why this sort of memo hit everybody really hard in the service also because it looked like a black eye when it got out it seemed embarrass him. Crozier's letter was quickly leaked to the press. The Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Moseley. He was under immediate pressure to respond along with other officials in the trump administration. What's interesting to me about the response immediately? After crozier's memo gets out into the public is how there wasn't any coherent one it was everybody's saying different things so. Mobley immediately got on to the news and told CNN. You know we're working on it. We have a plan in place which was true because he was in communications with captain. Kosher and his staff at that point that same afternoon. Molly's boss security defense mark effort gets on the evening news. Says I haven't made any decision and I haven't read the letter in full. Why have not had a chance to read that letter? Read it in detail again. I'm going to rely on the navy chain of command to go out there to assess the situation and to make sure they provide the captain and the crew all the support. They need to get the sailors healthy and get the ship back at sea near on the same page. The Secretary of the Navy and the Secretary of Defense and it was just the beginning of this massive schism. I think that's happening right now between civilian and military leadership. What do you mean when you say that regardless of who encroach Captain Crozier's chain of command was against his requests and they were maximum requests? You start to see a real difference. Between how the admirals an how the political appointees are dealing with. This and the admirals will they still had a ship and captain to deal with and so they are still looking for. How do we get these sailors off and affected investigation into what happened? But the political appointees specifically molly an expert just seems like they were completely foundering and looking for a political mitigation tactics. That might save them face eventually. These face saving tactics ramped up. Acting Secretary Moodley got captain closure on the phone and they had a pretty good heart to heart and mildly. Insisted publicly. That we're not gonNA shoot the Messenger here the next day. He relieves grocer and he does it with this language. It says you know Crozier's judgment was just obviously overwhelmed by the challenges in front of him and we have to get him out of the situation but firing a captain who so fiercely advocated for his sailors. It did not go over well. Cursor gets fired is relieved of his command and so he has to leave the ship and the way that most of the public finds out about this is by video shared on social media of him disembarking from the ship and droves of sailors on board the Roosevelt cheering him on. How is that? Like how as as a sailor I forget as a sailor as a journalist like I was talking about this with other military reporters than they were all like. We have never seen anything like that until the next day. When secretary mildly decides to fly out to the TR to give his own addressed to the to the sailors of the ship over the one MC the main intercom and that was another unprecedented event where he basically again speaking to several thousand subordinates ages eighteen to mid forties and says well you know you're captain was either too stupid or too naive to realize that was going to that letter was going to get out to the public and give the navy a black guy and I don't know where where we on this pod with profanities go for it so Tasked purpose of military focused news and culture site that I once worked for. They got audio of secretary. Molly actually giving this speech and at the point where he calls Captain Crozier to too stupid or Tunein Eve. You could literally hear one of the listening sailors go. "Over the last week Adam. Weinstein has been thinking back on his early days in the military. So Adam you're in the navy for how long just four years but I've been either working in or covering military establishment since then Adams National Security editor at the new republic. Now you talked about this poem that guys in the Navy learn. Can you tell me about it so when you go to the Naval Academy you go in for your first day? It's called Induction Day. I Day they take you in. They issue you uniforms. They shave your head. They put you in your room and teach you how to make your bed and Close and then they give you this small book called Refinance Which is called the Bible? And you have to memorize all of this information in this Bible and this is a process that all the service Japanese have but it navy they have this one particular poem that you're also required to memorize called the laws of the navy. The Laws of the Navy is a poem that's all about teamwork and obedience. It's this one stanza about taking on your chain of command. It concludes his well with seniors to fight. They prosper who burned in the morning. The letters they wrote overnight. I think it's remarkable that at the same time that know. They're teaching prospective naval officers to Tell Port from starboard the rules of the road when you're actually underway and ship. They're also telling you hey. Be careful what you put in writing this lesson. It's been top of mind for Adams Week as an angry letter from the captain of US worship 'cause Navy brass to publicly implode that captain a guy named Brett Crozier was desperately trying to get his sailors off the US. Roosevelt as the corona virus spread on board but releasing a letter. It just isn't the way the navy does things. The first thing I thought of was the laws of the navy and while that's a letter that's probably going to end a sailor's career but it was also one that seemed like it was really necessary. And it definitely struck a nerve from the American public right now while we're stay at home quarantines and looking at how the military is dealing with these same issues that we are today. I mean you've said that the military you think is actually more vulnerable than the outside world to the krona virus. Would you mean by that? Yeah it's it comes down to. This is a very large bureaucracy. That has a very specific mission and mission is not one that lends itself very easily to a self quarantine or social distancing or any of the precautionary measures. You need to take in contagion.

"Of the US Roosevelt and he got on the one MC which is the intercom that addresses the entire ship and he proceeded to give a speech that upbraided Captain Crozier. Come Out I ask. Some sailors were scrambled to record the speech. Because was almost unbelievable to have the secretary of the navy talking about a captain. And this way Moseley said that Captain Crozier was either stupid or naive was my opinion information was the quiz going to get out into the public. In this information age that we live in that he was a too naive or too stupid to be the commanding officer ship. Like this said that he hadn't probably the chain of command trail trust with me command. Would you eight hundred thousand people or your shipmates Astro right now? He said that The Navy was looking out for the sailors best interests and they should know that. I talk about that when secretary tone. It's almost like he's scolding the captain that he is just relieved and wanting to remind all the sailors aboard of what it means to have good order and discipline and to do their jobs and to trust that the navy will take care of them. How did the crew on board the ship react during the speech? Will there's a One leaked copy of the of the Audio Speech. As the acting secretary is speaking. There's sailor who blurts out our profanity win. The acting secretary said something derogatory about Captain Crozier and as soon as this speech was over. People were talking about it. Sailors talking about it just like Crozier's memo quickly leaked to the press so did recordings of Modi's speech and people off. The ship Heard Moseley speech. It did not go over well. Almost immediately he was. He started receiving criticism. There were calls from lawmakers and folks in Congress advocacy groups said while Moodley said Captain Crozier had exhibited poor judgment folks. Were saying that maybe Mr Mode leads the one who has lost control and wasn't exhibiting a good grasp of command and the Secretary of Defense and even the president expressing concern over the way things were handled. You have to good people and they were arguing and I'm good. Believe or not at settling arguments. I'm good at settling these arguments so I may look into it in great detail in detail and it'll be able to figure it out very fast and soon enough. The Secretary of defense was demanding. That acting secretary mode issuing apology mode apologized and walked back his characterization of crozier saying he believed the captain is quote. Smart in passionate. But that apology wasn't enough and the backlash against grew and people including house speaker. Nancy Pelosi called for his resignation resignation. That modality gave yesterday. So where does this all leave the navy right now? Well Moley was just the acting secretary. He was not a Senate confirmed secretary of the Navy. The Under Secretary of the army has now been called over to act as the head of the navy. We still have every day. More sailors from the Roosevelt are testing positive. For covert. You have far-flung basis that are still dealing with these issues and at the end of the day you still got the mission that the Roosevelt ultimately needed to do which is project. Power and keep America's interests safe abroad. Which is the enduring mission. That's got to happen in the background of all this which it seems like they probably can't even do right now because not only are they docked but also more and more of their sailors are contracting the virus every day the Navy says the Roosevelt could set sail if needed to but the ship has a number of sailors who have tested positive for Co vid nineteen and the reason that they steamed to Guam and put into port. Early was because of concerns that more and more people would get. The focus of this story has really come to be about Crozier and Moseley and the response. But I'm wondering where does it leave all of these sailors from the USS Roosevelt? Right now I did speak with a sailor who was in quarantine at a hotel and I said what's it like being on quarantine and sailor said. It's it's nice we're in hotels it's just as Captain Crozier wished for more than two hundred and thirty sailors from the US. Roosevelt have now tested positive for the krona virus including according to reports this ships former captain captain crozier..

"So what Mr. Moly set in fact. Was he worried that the president seen what had happened about this letter being released? The president would intervene an order the captain to be dismissed before the Navy could even act on it and that would be further embarrassment. The Navy Mr Moley was basically trying to preempt the president from doing what he feared he might do. So what happens after the Navy secretary possibly preempting the President Fires Crozier so on Monday? Mr Mode trying to tamp down the fuhrer of his dismissal of the captain through eight thousand miles to Guam to address the crew aboard the ship he gets on the intercom system. And in a fifteen minute. Obscenity laced Teret. Everyone's scared about this thing. But I tell you something. Official was in combat hypersonic missiles coming in. And you'd be pretty scared to jobs criticizes Captain Crozier. Information was going to get out into the public in this information age that we live in and he was a too naive to stupid. Be The commanding officer ship like this the author and then he rebukes the crew. Think about that when you cheered them an office ship for cheering this guy. Let me say one thing. I'm telling you guys right now. I will never ever ever throw you guys out of the bus in Washington or anywhere else media anywhere else. He tells them how much he respects them in will. Never throw them under the bus and then finally he says there's never a situation orange media apart your chain of command. You can join conditions in no situation. Should you go to the media with your complaints? Has An agenda and the agenda that they have of course the irony? Is that the audio of Mr. Moly speech was almost immediately leaked the media which is why you can hear it now and embarrassment and this did not go over. Well you had a number of retired Navy officers. Lawmakers reacting outraged that he would not just criticize the captain which you've already done but criticized the crew This was just too much and by Monday. Night said regards to Captain Crozier before usage. President is asked about. It will be a bad week does that. I don't want to look into it. And I also and for the president who had initially supported Captain Crozier's firing now. He seems to be having second thoughts. It looks to me like he's an outstanding. I looked I looked at his. All trump says maybe he's not such a bad guy after all you know. Maybe I can help the situation out. I mean you guys say. Why is the president getting involved in well? I like to solve problems. It's a problem you know. And so there's a hint that the president may once again intervene in this case but not the way that the Navy secretary feared in the opposite way. That's right and maybe reinstate the captain that's when shortly after that in a letter overnight mostly writing. I want to apologize to the navy. Mr Moly issues this late night apology. I do not think Captain Brett Crozier is naive stupid. He is smart and passionate. I believe precisely because he is not not even stupid that he sent his alarming email with the intention of getting it into the public domain. And by late Tuesday afternoon Mr Modal resigns and it just kind of underscores the turmoil within the ranks of the Navy right now but it also kind of shows the turmoil within the Pentagon overall and this kind of revolving door because remember Mr Modalities and acting secretary. He replaced a guy who was fired last November and he in turn will be placed by another acting secretary so the navy leadership now has gone through three different secretaries and just a few short months. Eric you've been covering this from the moment that letter became public and you have been covering the military for years. And what do you make of this entire episode? It is extraordinary and I think what you have here is a conflict between in many ways the come storied history of the United States military specifically United States Navy with its hierarchy. It's chains of command set against a very unusual enemy this once in a century pandemic and also a very unusual and unpredictable president and caught in the middle of all this are the sailors the sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt with pandemic spreading through their ranks. Even as they sit on the docks in Guam. And it's those sailors who are kind of looking both to their captain. There now departed captain and to Washington for some help. How do we get out of this? And how do we get back to our mission safely? What's the answer? I mean? What has happened to these five thousand sailors on the US Roosevelt? Well roughly half of the sailors have come off the ship. Some are in quarters on the naval base in Guam. Some have been put up in private hotels there more than one hundred and fifty cases of sailors who tested positive so this process will go on for no doubt weeks until the crew is healthy enough and the ship is clean enough again for the crew did get back on and go on. Its Way and continue. Its Mission Eric. It sounds like captain crozier. Pretty much got what he asked for. The military is more or less emptying this ship and putting people in quarantine right. I think you're right. And most important. He got the navy to focus is attention even more on these sailors which is what he wanted all along. What do you expect is going to happen to Captain Crozier? We'll kept enclosure. Right now. Is in quarantine in Guam. He actually tested positive for corona virus. Himself so he is waiting friends. Say He's doing okay right now. But otherwise the navy has said he would be reassigned to his desk job in San Diego but with all the twists and turns of last few days. The man who fired crozier has now been fired himself. And there's talk that Captain Crozier could possibly be reinstated. There's a petition going online. With more than two hundred and fifty thousand signatures demanding that he be reinstated. So the fate of Captain Crozier his still to be decided.

They're thinking him because by now they've read the letter they know what's happened here in. I mean it seems very clear from that that the navy is not just at odds with the captain of the ship but with its own sailors there so how did that huge gap form between the top brass and the rank and file so import that division is created essentially by the priorities that the military overall has with the military's job is. It's I to be ready for Combat Secretary of the Navy. The defense secretary. They have to worry about threats and how they would respond to them. Whereas the captain's immediate view is that he's worried about the health of his crew. But there's another important factor in all this and that's president trump for these civilian leaders back in Washington at the Defense Department and the navy. They're worried of how president trump is going to view this and they've got good reason to worry now. President trump has ignored advice from his military and absolve three. Us service members accused of warcrimes. Mr The president has actively meddled in criminal investigations in the military president has intervened on the behalf of accused war criminals was charged with the murder of an Afghan bombmaker and overturned their punishments repeatedly and Mr Trump reinstated navy seal Eddie Gallagher to the rank of chief petty officer after he was convicted of posing with the corpse of an Isis detainee Navy secretary was fired. The Navy secretary is out asked to resign over his handling of disgraced navy. Seal Eddie Gallagher Richard Spencer in trying to deal with one of these interventions that the president did and so the president has gotten into the heads of civilian leaders including the navy..

"The Navy Richard Spencer has been fired over how he handled the case of a navy. Seal accused of warcrimes. Since we've been essentially immersed in impeachment speaking for myself I think we should start with a little bit of background on the case before we get to what went down on and what the politics are. So this case involves Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher Phil can you just give us a little bit of background on who gallagher is sure this is a a classic trump story about can the president do it yes he can. The question is should he. And that's where people are divided as we're recording this podcast. Today Eddie. Gallagher is a navy each chief special warfare operator. He was in the seals and served in Iraq and the fight against Isis. He was accused of some very serious war-crimes they're in a navy court martial. That was itself very a problematic and he became a cost celeb- for Fox News and some other supporters on the rights. Because of the way the navy handled that case ultimately he was acquitted of murder charge but he was found guilty of posing with a body that had been killed in the conflict with Isis in Iraq and then the navy began the process of deciding what his punishment would be. It decided to take away one of his ranks taking him down to Petty Officer First Class and theoretically he could have lost his affiliation with the seals the so-called try and pin that seals are allowed to wear on their uniforms. That's that's what brings us up to now because the president has intervened first of all to restore his rank as a chief petty officer and he's told the Defense Department that gallagher is going to be able to keep his tried Freiden pin end his affiliation with the seals some are. Why did the president decide to weigh in on this case? Well this follows a pattern for the president. He generally doesn't like to to work within established channels. He doesn't take advice from his own administration. He sees that on Fox News Gallagher had become claws celebre not unlike how he pardon some prisoners after the Kardashians and Kanye West lobbied him about them so he not only intervened in the case of chief gallagher but he also pardoned two other soldiers against Pentagon recommendations he issued pardons to army Major Matthew Golstein who had faced a murder trial and former first lieutenant. Clint Lawrence who was convicted in the murder of two unarmed men in Afghanistan galleries been doing a lot the media around this and he was on Fox News this weekend. You know I just WanNa retire peacefully with with all the honors that I've earned get back to my family and I don't know how many many times I think the president he keeps stepping in and doing the right thing and I just wanted. I want to let them know that the rest of the community is not about this right now. They they all respect the president. And what the admiral is doing showing complete. Insubordination is not a good example of Good Order and discipline you say this issue. And the admiral he's referring to in that clip is Colin Green who oversees the Navy seals. So Gallagher says the rank in files behind him but the brass isn't but the brass is where Richard shared. Spencer comes into play in this story after. President trump makes this announcement not everyone at the Pentagon's onboard right. That's right. There was some press reports over the past couple of days. That suggested that Spencer Spencer the Navy secretary and some other leaders in the navy might resign rather than go along with directions from the White House to let Gallagher keep this tried into seal device and retire honourably from the navy. They view his crimes and this process is being essential to what you'll hear people call good order and discipline within the force. There has to be a process process that plays out and people who are subject to that process must honor those outcomes question about the Trident. Pin Isn't more symbolic or is it actual lowering of rank because he not allowed to wear a pin anymore just been hearing a lot about the trident pen and I don't understand if it's just a matter of being able to wear it or if it actually does signify some kind of punishment it's intensely symbolic symbolic because the Trident is. What seals are awarded? Once they come through the incredible infamously grueling training process that we'd them out and select switch small numbers of them will actually actually go on and become active members of the team. And if you get it taken away it means you're not eligible to be a member of these elites seal units and take those assignments so even at the end of his career career losing this trident pin would have been very symbolic for him to have begun his career as a seal but not to end it that way. Now the firing of Richard Spencer gets a little confusing and and there was a lot of events that happened over the course of the weekend one was these reports that Spencer was part of a group of navy officials. Don't weren't happy about it. But then the secretary of Defense Mark Esber says that Spencer was actually doing some behind the scenes. Maneuvering that basically pissed a lot of people off. That's right it's very a complicated story and we may not have the full picture as we're talking Mondays. We record this podcast. But here's what appears to have happened. Spencer said those reports were wrong that he was going to step down. He said he was not going to step down. But what we've since learned is that he was talking in a back channel with the White House about a review board that had been set up for Gallagher's Trident Pin and and what he apparently said was please. Mr President. Let this board play out and have gallagher retired with his chief petty officer rank in his seal device device. But just don't intervene. It's important for this process to be seen as the final word and for you the White House not to intervene with this but the defense secretary. WHO's above the Navy secretary? More Gaspar apparently learn about this and according to what he said. Spencer was not forthright with him about this back channel that he had with the White House went outside the chain of command correct. So not only did he go outside the chain of command within the Defense Department. He may not have told the truth about a to the defense secretary and that became problematic. The other complicating factor. Here is the president had expressed on twitter that he wanted gallagher to keep his rank and his trident pin but he had never actually said that directly wasn't written claiming defense official Espera went to go see trump trump. According to the defense secretary said you need to make sure this Eddie Gallagher situation is resolved the way I want and so he decided to do that. And as a part of that process having discovered that there. Was this other line between Spencer in the White House. ASPER said that Spencer had to go. The president is the commander in chief. He has every Right Authority Liam privileged to do what he wants to do or you to basically make sure his absolute. What message does that send to the troops that basically you're pulling the plug on random review board president commander in chief and that was secretary of Defense Mark Esper- being questioned by NPR's Pentagon correspondent? Tom Bowman so Esper- says Spencer had to go. He serves at the pleasure of the president and he did this back. Channel thing that I didn't support and he was trying to affect an outcome of navy process gotta go but Spencer Mara has a different take on what went down right right. I mean just to repeat again. The president is the commander in chief. He can remove anyone for any reason in the military but in his resignation letter where he accepted accepted the fact that his service was being terminated. He said he couldn't in good conscience. Obey an order that I believe violates the sacred oath I took in the presence of my family. My flagging again my faith to support and defend the constitution of the United States and he went on to say quote. Unfortunately it's become apparent that in this respect I no longer share the same understanding standing with the commander in chief who appointed me in regards to the key principle of good order and discipline so for Spencer part of good order and discipline was having at this military judicial system which is supposed to be have some amount of independence operate without political interference. Run its course. Even though he seems to have been negotiating an outcome that would also satisfy the president this is a recurring theme. In the trump presidency. There is no law that says says the president can't order his Justice Department to investigate his political opponents. It's a norm. The Justice Department is supposed to have some kind of independence. There's no law that says the president has to accept the findings of his own. CIA and intelligence community. President trump keeps on coming into conflict with all of these fact-based east institutions. We hear a lot about norms. Norms are not laws but norms at the very heart. Mean that you show some restraint just because you can do something legally you don't do it and the president doesn't subscribe to that theory of leadership. All right I think that's a good place to take a break and when we get back we'll talk about the political impacts of Spencer's firing support for this podcast..

"Too many navy bean savings. Navy beans are are making for some sloppy joe sloppy joes and the worst of all though those navy beans navy beans navy beans <hes> because the recent d._o._d. Study found that what chaps a recent study found that the navy earned the dubious honor surpassing all the branches and the rate of obese personnel which i would have guessed some people were saying like task and purpose and military dot com or saying. They're surprised that <hes> a branch that's known lovingly. I mean this seriously lovingly as the chair force wouldn't be the fattest branch of the military. I would have guessed that navy just based on the folks that i have worked with in the past there chubby bunnies for a lot of them. I think with the amount of people that are on ships and i know you can work out on ships. I know they have areas to work out but i just feel like there isn't a propensity to work out when you're underwater just out to sea for large periods of time so this is actually. I don't think it's that surprising yeah yeah and it's not just the navy it's overall the rate of fat servicemembers is up in recent years with percentage of personnel weighing in at obese standards climbing over seventeen percent it according to a health of the d._o._d. For study seventeen percent of all dod personnel are overweight that number spiked to over a quarter of a service dismembers over the age of thirty five which is not surprising at all if you if you lined up a group of senior chief especially our master sergeants you'll be like those are some shabby kids. You're like tenured professors who are like bad. I can't really fire me so fucking like they just don't think some of them just don't care anymore anymore. And it's hard i mean i imagine now like putting myself in that position now. So if i would have stayed in i would be in like fifteen. You're sixteen years at this point. Oh yeah dude i run and three miles and under twenty one minutes like a respectable time twenty two twenty three minutes that shit would be very difficult for me. I don't think dies off to all that shit so yeah. It's been spiking hugely but especially. I think it's also the number. Let's get into just the number of the overall overall personnel. This is everybody not just over age. Thirty five further navy twenty two percent of all navy personnel are obese like like clinically overweight obese. Yeah that's eighteen percent from the air force seventeen percent of the army which is that's higher than i thought it would have been for the marine corps comes in at eight point three percent. They didn't give us the numbers on our beloved coastguard because they're the department of homeland security this dod survey <hes> but eight point three percent for the marine corps little high thought that was a little high also. I love this this note. They put him while the marine corps was the least overrated the bunch. They had the marines with the highest rate of knee and back injuries so we're the most fit and we have the worst knee and back injuries. Why is that the shit out of because we're out there just crushing allen yep pounding pavement. I also liked it. The survey took lucas shot another shot at the navy by saying they have the lowest incident of injury like that's another way like the navy doesn't do shit it right and it said how much of that could be related to inactivity was not determined yeah yeah determining it for you right now but listen to this and i i think when i think of the whole scuttle but with banning the transgender troops in how many i saw online while it's costing too it'll cost too much money. I need to have transgender troops blah blah. It was like a million or something a year overweight and obese active duty military cost the d- d._o._d. One hundred and three million a year in the forum of over over almost six over six hundred fifty thousand loss workdays so how do you why do you not going health related concerns with it. It's like branching out for if you're obese. There's a ton of a ton of different heart issues. Neil shoes all those type of things. Come across the root cause of it. I guess it'd be being overweight. I think the number for transgender ginger troop was actually thirteen. Million is what the actual number was last year my eight hundred eight million. It's it's crazy that i think that almost a quarter of an entire branch could be overweight getting together will say this though buoyancy big deal in the navy they might right neilan something maybe it's specific to their branch and also i blame the food services has been getting better and better. The halls are getting better and better bring us back. They would ladle a nice gruel into a bowl for you. You know like police i some. All you know that kind of thing. I love that me miss like pussy uh-huh posey. Please folks have gotten better also. Let me ask you something you you mentioned when you were fifteen sixteen years. You'd probably be some sort of staff position at this point right. Oh yeah i mean i talked to a buddy of mine now like if i was still in i'd be a sergeant the major now right right. That's part of the problem too as you as you go up in rank. You are more accountable for yourself in other words doing doing p._t. In the morning and it's just like oh ick it is expected that you would just go on your own and i'm sure there's plenty of days right. I do this that and the other thing so. I'm not not gonna do p._t. Today because i know once i got to have certain positions it was just on me to be working out a little bit easier to it's not like where if you are or a young troop in your entire p._t. Regiment falls on you in your platoon now as a first sergeant even as as e seven or whatever you want to go work got it launched by and large you have that time you could share. Nobody's gonna say anything to you like if the first sergeant major like hey sir had over to go during child is now going to be like like hell. You are sorry now you're right. You're right. I was definitely practicing yoga at lunchtime. Oh yeah well as they say to like the problems ballooning for the navy. I think one of the motivating things for me. When i used to t- joe thank you was seeing the older marines like the higher ranking marines. All mine were shit hot and they it could crush any of us in p._t._a. Even the high ranking all like even the guys like ford late forties and fifties and it was so motivated because you're like well if they're doing it. I can do it too. If if you're in the navy and your leadership ain't doing shit if they said the bulk of this is people over thirty five and the high ranking then how who are they to tell you to get in shape yeah tell them selves type thing. That's that's tough to swallow. Gonna do bad bitch and then you just run away. They're not gonna you know so. I think that's what yeah yeah so i. I don't know if this joke is going to translate well podcast or not but me and my buddy actually dropped his given christian name mike huntley was his name and and we were that's his actual name lately it so we used to work together on quantico and we had this master guns zeh masturbating scott. I think i've told a story about master scott to whenever i was the company gunnery sergeant how he came in he was pissed off. It was the first day i was actually got promoted to staff. Sergeant sergeant grabbed an ammo can full of cigarette butts in your office yeah same guy. This dude was well into his forties as has a master guns and nine in the marine corps and he would constantly still be under like a nineteen minute three mile guy. Oh yeah and i got out of sergeants course like our enlisted p._m. Programs and was running faster than i had in a long time. I was pretty close to an eighteen minute guy again and he he saw me like running ahead of in the last five hundred yards this dude in his forties. I'm still probably twenty six years old twenty seven years old full allies allies by the sprints so fast like this dude rip cigarettes all the time he eats like shit and can still run and in my head still i was like man i hope that that's the way that i am because when you have a leader who really crashes on standards and keeps themselves to the highest standard as a junior troop troupe you and you respect the shit out of that so navy off basically i think the consumer navy officers and enlisted blame you know that's the one last note about the navy you'd think as a navy chief you would definitely want to stay in shape because that yellow that they wear what the blue shorts and the a yellow. Tom screams fat body. That's tough at least the olive drab p t shirts that we wear a little bit slimming. <hes> um yeah yeah little darker color yeah right but that's actually sometimes i have <hes> younger. Junior officers asked me. Hey some advice going to say one of the easiest things you can do is just be in the best shape of anybody because that's a great way to earn respect right out of the gate and not have to worry the men or women think you're a ship bag. I just figured it out by the way here's how they can solve. The problem of obesity military all p. t. uniforms short shorts and crop tops both genders wow. That's a terrible shame shame right. Here's a workshop that we'll circle back on that one. That's league. Let's put little pin in it and we'll circle back on gnat. But what do you say we all go back and do our respective tests fuck man. I'll never run like ten. Nothing like an hour to just walk three miles. I'll do with you though cons okay all right. We'll do if you're gonna do do the army p._t. Test all you gotta do it'll take me longer because we we actually do more than hold on though actually should i have to do the tests that i used to do or the new test. The army does those old. I think no one came to see kate bus stops and pull ups fuck now. Are you kidding again. Bingo wings not happening at all. How how long do you can flex charming kate. If i have a good song in my head i can go for a long time party in the u._s._a. Oh yeah i could. I could go probably to two rounds party in u._s._a. Bertie higgins oh i could. I could be there all day for sure coconut. Oh i'd be too too hot and heavy.

"That is just something to keep in mind about this original person like where she may have been coming from yeah. Okay this is this is how I feel about it. I agree that something navy should did not have blocked these two. I mean she has she ten but she should not have right because while Sophie does have some good points like what she says. Is I think empirically true true. It has nothing kind of to do with this post and in some ways like through the way that she speaks is so highly condescending and is then she looked body shames Ariel. She calls her emaciated needed which is fucked up. She says that she looks like a child like has a body of a child who that is then fetish is she. She then says that like clearly she's also clearly. She's follows hurt closely because she knows that she doesn't. She does her work. That's all the time but I do have to say that like her. Little dance workouts are not getting her fit like they're not like like airliners has. She has skinny jeans. Yes she she. Does she like her. Whole family is very thin like you can see in her mom? She puts her mom her two sisters. They're all very thin she was do you can see how thin she was in her pictures that she shows her high school. All of that shit so well okay yeah. I like an also. I don't think it's right for this girl to tell our yell that she should be using her platform to talk about like people in k kids dying in cages like use your platform to talk about it right like what does this have to do with her. Just posting a picture of she's saying she's proud of her work for after her two children and also she never I really never says oh my body bounce back effort day. She says it's been took me a year to lose. Some weight. who were both rolling are is about that kind of shit but it doesn't mat like she's never like Oh bounced back right away? Check me out right. I mean I mean I. I completely agree with you. Here's here's the thing I agree with everything that like Sophie flack and that Amanda Siegfried said and I I do think that influ and the one thing I I also agree with what Ariel said and her response. The one thing. I don't agree agree with is that she says I'm not responsible for making people feel good because I happen to think that if you are an influence earned you have a million followers and people follow you as closely as they do her and you are your job is literally to have influence on people then you are responsible will not for making sure that every single person's happy but I do think you are responsible for how your content makes people feel if you make people feel shitty. You're jealous then that's really not I mean. I don't really support that however however I don't think that she by posting this photo was intending to hurt anyone I think she was just being proud of herself and I do think that like while I agree with them. This wasn't really like the time or the place because her post wasn't that bad and she wasn't getting paid for anything in our post so also manatee for and saying that she why don't we talk or both of them. Why don't we talk about how like how you're getting paid for this kind of stuff and like it was kind of didn't have anything to do with this? It's sort of like if you if you think that that people you really only want to see people who are using their platform to spread good messages and be like active about political issues or proper body image than like. Maybe you shouldn't be following this person because something thing navy I think above compared even with just like every other in like just relatives of other influences I think she's she is this isn't like shaded her but I think she's one of the people who's like the least she posts in my opinion sort of like the lease meaningful things like she even like even on like election day. She doesn't even post like vote which is so innocuous and like everybody posts about voting like not even like vote for this person like just literally I I noticed like when the election happened like I noticed that something navy was the only influence our who I follow who did not say like.

"Of mine, he's a recruiter in Philadelphia on, and he calls me up and tells me Remmy like I can't get none of these kids in the navy or the army, I say, why he said, because none of them could pass as that test. Not pass the basic as that. And I go to the school and see what they're learning and how they're being taught and the books they have and the resources are lacking. Like that's why they can't read at a senior high school level. And so the education system really needs to be ramped up, revamped across the country with an inner cities. And so because if you can't if you if you could just pack as that that's not enough ago sought to in order to go soft gotta have really high ad that sports. So, so, yeah, I mean, I, I think that that's death thing. And what I you know, one of the reasons why write a book book. There's one of the main reasons why wrote the book was, you know. A lot of a lot of white feels written books, you know, saying, and no drama. Is be foot do who I. And, and that's why for long time I want to write a book, like took us to find tons of writing a book. And I just knew that if I wrote a book, it wasn't gonna be strict wasn't gonna be navy seal book, and essence of what maybe she'll book is not not in any navy seal book is going to be a journey book, and it's going to be a book with a kid from the inner city can pick up read and be like, wow, like this do came from where I came from, and he became a seal become what you. And that kind of goes to the exposure thing, I wanted to expose kids to who come from my world to my new world, so that they can see and have hope that they can do it. But that makes sense. That's awesome. Yeah. And what you're saying, I mean, we've touched on it before it, definitely is an issue in the special operations community of looking like a monolithic, you know, at least just visually people think that think it is. But I mean Denison I will get Remi's picks from the navy before we started this and. I think it's a picture of your buds class in it is literally all white face. And then. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And that's the way it is every class. I mean, well, well, let me rephrase. That, that's the way it is some classes, most classes, it's all white. Like literally, you probably get maybe one. If you lucky to black graduates a year. And we're talking five graduating classes that year, I think, in other, it might be, you know, you're, you're a New Yorker, so you know about this. There has been a history of more white firefighters, and I've, I've read articles about that, and it has to do with the legacy thing of this guy's father is a firefighter, and there was a firefighter, and they learn about it. You know earlier on we've had guys on the show before, like firm and Taras whose navy seal. His father is a third generation is great. Father is ABCL and, and you know that holding onto that Wagga C thing it's, it's hard to get into new communities and get new faces in the program. And as you said, like there's certain things are advantageous to not looking like everybody else yet. Let me ask you a question when you say that, do you mean like that is you put the burden on the community or you put the like I just want just want quite back TAC TAC. So you saying that the legacy thing is because it's the father who teaches the sun..

But while you're at it don't be afraid to go for two Harvey when you hear him in that conversation. I had with him earlier today. Talking about the pressure that every player feels on army navy, and you're talking about dude, three tours and ghanistan right here. I don't care about metals and this and that that's about honor and duty out. He doesn't care about that stuff. But when he. You said about the pressure. And then that last comment about man, comparing being an NFL tunnel or college football tunnel for army navy with going into, you know, the battlefield at night with night vision goggles, knee ended description, right? The senses of feeling the heat of the home v and then going over the mountains. And now now you see your target. That's the only adrenalin rush that beats being in the tunnel for army navy or an NFL tunnel before a game. Dude, is chills man. It's unbelievable. You you get to go this game. I I'm so envious. It's I've never been described man. Yeah. First of all. Yeah. It's it's great to hear him talk about those things and how much that time that he's able to spend at West Point how much it mattered to him. And what an impact it made on on him and the brotherhood that he's a part of. And yeah, we get caught up in the NFL and the pressure that these guys are on especially it'd city like Pittsburgh where they're expected to win every game. And you know. You know? That's that's probably as he said nothing like what he's used to. And and even this weekend. You know, navy has not had a good year. I mean to think that navy is three and nine is unheard of. And to come into play. Army army looking for their third straight win. I mean for these guys this is a big deal. I think before that navy at one fourteen in a row, and Jeff monk and was hired as you know. He's an assistant at navy. They brought him over and said, hey, whatever they're doing with coach Ken over there. Maybe bring that over here to West Point. We really appreciate it. And boy the first time the first game he had a chance it came so close to knocking off navy and now they've won a couple in a row and trying to make it three in a row. So it's it's the weekend that I look forward to every year. It's one of my most favorite games that I love to sit down always tell you. We do game day in the morning, and we take a train from Philadelphia up to time square where it's drops us off right in New York City, and I'm sprinting to get up into my room. And I don't want anybody. Near my room. I don't want him watch the game with anybody. I turn the close the curtains. I turn the lights off air conditioning down to share in the dark a love it. And I tune everything out, and I sit there, and I watch it. They'll every snap. And I love it. I just I look forward to it every single year. I don't care what the records are care that it doesn't impact conference championship or a playoff. I just I'm a throwback myself. I love watching how they play. And if you if you have time on Saturday encourage you to please just watch the game and watch how these guys approached their jobs as far as being a linebacker a corner or running back and watch how hard they play and watch how they're not disrespectful. They're not stand it over top of each other taunting each other..

"And after that, really what we know right now is three diesel-electric subs and the L so in a crisis. I mean, the incentives for the Indians to really strike at that via left. The exact it's it's incredibly obvious for the Indians to take down move, which means that the Pakistanis will have to devolve some kind of youth authority to the personnel stationed on the submarines of to be useful in a crisis. And that's and that's really worth things like personal reliability, which is kind of a nightmare in the Pakistani navy case specifically start to come into play. Yeah. And I think in the Pakistanis have manipulated this, you know, incentive to fail deadly and fail lethal to their advantage. I think even with the Nassir batteries land. You know, I think the the line from the Pakistanis and we have centralized control. Centralized control until we don't and once we plus she things out, you know, all bets are off. And I can imagine them either. You know, they have an incentive to make the same kind of argument for the for the Augusta's and the seabass leg, but that the the incentives are actually kind of a line in this case, right? They may want to maintain centralized control up until they flush him out. But wants to question out. They can't be confident commanded control with survive the crisis. And so they would have to basically divall use soon as that thing flushed out, and that creates major risks. Royal Navy dozen listen for the Pakistani national radio broadcaster or something PTV. Yup. What is what the Galatian dynamics between these countries with cruise versus ballistic. You know, I find it. Interesting. Like, the two ways the navy's are differing in how they're approaching the sea leg of their of their triad, perhaps the bureaucratic pushes. If there are any. And maybe what you guys make of that, you know, the Pakistani with a slick, and then the the Indians with a BM, I've a quick answer that don't get you know, I can can fill in all the data missile defense..

"To hire. He's reading of hiring sites with over one thousand reviews. And undefeated season still in sight for the third ranked Irish as they battle against navy tonight at SD CU stadium. The midshipmen the first of five matchups here in this home stretch, Joel with you the network's studios rare is it in sports that a player gets to play for both teams in a rivalry matchup, you occasionally seed in the pros, but almost never in the collegiate ranks. However, Notre Dame safety alot. He Gilman will experience ten nights rivalry game from the Irish sidelines two years ago Gilman made twelve tackles for the midshipmen in a stunning win over number five Notre Dame, but he transferred to the Irish after that season. And here he is now trying to help Notre Dame reach the college football playoff by playing against his former team right now, he's standing by in San Diego with our Jack Nolan. We are here with Notre Dame starting free safety alot, he Gilman. I don't know what's going through your head right now. But it has to be surreal that you are preparing to. Face off against the guys you used to face off against in practice, but now accounts. Yeah, I mean, it's pretty exciting. It's it's pretty crazy to wrap my head around it and just excited to get out there and play against my teammates and experienced that how many questions have your teammates asked you this week about how to stop the navy attack of the Vesta bunch just small keys thoughts insights on different things. And it's been a cool experience being able to share my knowledge about the triple option and defending it. And so it's been good, obviously when you were scouting other teams you had to play against their offenses. But how many times it maybe to the number one defense play the number one offense in practice a lot a lot pretty much every day. We went out going to get a lot in fall camp. It's all triple option. So got a lot of reps. You also got to play it when you play the other service academies. So there's there's nobody on this team this probably played as much as you have what give me three keys to stopping the navy triple option attack. I first and foremost being physical set the tone early physically navy's a tough team. And they're also going to come out and beat be physical and put their foot down our throats tried to. So we got to be physical affront second thing. Doing your job. You got to do your job. Whatever job you have full back. Dies pitch. It won't work unless you do your job and thirteen just being strong with the discipline, and your keys, whatever keys you have. Yes. They executed keys. I know it's a long story. So the abbreviated version how did a Lowy Gilman end up leaving navy and coming to Notre Dame abbreviated version. Yes. So things. Changed in ways. When I was at navy decisions that were made through things I couldn't really control wasn't as passionate ended up deciding to transfer leaving. Mario brothers there. And Notre Dame end up becoming a place that was intriguing and I had some high interest in and ended up being the right place for me. You were part of the last navy team that beat Notre Dame a couple of years ago. So is that kind of surreal as well. Yeah. I think it's pretty cool. That'd be the only one who who. Who tackled Andy player and a navy player? So that'd be a pretty cool experience. And I'm excited in this rivalry that is certainly correct. Talk to me about how being navy prepared you for Notre Dame because everybody talks about how tough it is to survive as a student athlete at Notre Dame. Would you agree having been there? But there's no place tougher than surviving as a student athlete at navy. Yeah. Doesn't come close. Non-issue doesn't come close. The naval academy is a different story was a lot tougher. But I mean, the challenges for the naval academy, which is a different lifestyle different experienced. That was a lot tougher Kenya. Not to load the best thing for you would be to stay at maybe you would expect a coach to do that. But he also supported your decision when you made the decision to come to name is this what you envisioned undefeated third in the country with a shot at the playoff Amine. I didn't envision it. But I knew there was an opportunity where I could experience that. And that was that was the reason why I wanted to come to this school. It's experience something like this and being able to get on the road and play and beyond the seated, but right now is focused on beating navy, and we'll get one week at a time you play in all fourteen games. Your season of action at navy. Started twelve you're close to a lot of these guys. Have you ever been in this situation before we are going up against another team where you're close to so many of the guys you're playing? I have once in high school playing I went to a private school my freshman year playing team a public school team. But this one hits home a lot more for me because I experienced a lot of different trials and challenges with those guys they're really close to them. Some of my best friends are they're still in contact with them. So this one hits home and so the exciting game, and I'm excited you just play and have fun. Thank you. Appreciate it. All right. Great stuff there from a low he Gilman courtesy of Jack Nolan. The Irish players have talked about all we cal-. They've picked a low. He's brain in regards to this navy offense quite the asset for matchup like this is Notre Dame looks to improve to eight and with a win tonight. More pregame coverage heading your way up next.
