Border Crisis Sparks Calls for Change in Immigration Policy
"June twenty first two thousand nineteen jv pritzker signs measure to help protect illegal immigrants in illinois governor jv pritzker in june of two dozen nineteen signed three bills designed to protect illegal immigrants in illinois that would prohibit law enforcement agencies from coordinating with federal immigration authorities. Pritzker sign the keeping illinois families together. Act which prohibits local law enforcement from coordinating with immigration customs enforcement. Now this was two years ago. Why am i mentioning this. Because you have blue states by the way this is one of thirty examples of blue states that have been signing laws that prohibit police officers and local sheriffs in da's from coordinating with federal officials. That's an act of secession. That's an act of nullification saying we don't want any part of this. Federal compact and we as republicans and conservatives sat idly by like. Oh yeah that's bad. Let's keep going to the courts they've been ignoring the courts and ignoring the laws for years. And so then when one point eight million illegals come into the country to change the country permanently by the way what do we do. We beg joe biden for help. So what are the democrats do when things start to trend in a direction. They don't like they take action. The democrats have the willingness to reshape. Destroy the country. Republicans are getting there now. Some people emailed us and they said well. Charlie couldn't joe biden nationalize the national guard. It is very rare to do so usually only done with the consent of the governor and prayer pet presidents have rarely federalized a state or territory guard without the consent of the governor in the wake of hurricane katrina president. George w bush declined to take control of the louisiana's national guard due to the objection of governor kathleen blanco. But this is such an easy thing. First of all joe biden can't nationalize state troopers. Secondly he can't nationalize texas rangers. Thirdly the governor of texas would say i'm sorry what did you design a piece of paper. There's still our national guard. They're not gonna listen to you federalized nationalize i mean federalize. And so what should have been done. And what's still can be done. Is every single. Texas ranger national guard member state trooper that can be allocated should be deployed to the southern border with handcuffs and arrest authority and charter flights. Ready to send people back where they came from
Why Isn't Governor Abbot Deploying the Texas National Guard to Defend the Southern Border?
"Is betty lou in south texas. I'm a third generation texan Thank you for all you're doing. I am disgusted by the deplorable hans. Fly of illegal immigration into our mighty state and wants to great one nation under god. I'd like to hear more about governor abbott and other governors. What are they doing to forestall this horrible mind stress on fly. Thank you take care. God bless god. Bless thank you betty lou. She makes a great point. It's a great question. In fact tucker. Carlson asked that question last night and has apparently repeatedly invited governor abbott on his show. Evidently governor abbott has declined because tucker keeps asking the texas governor. Why are you not deploying the texas national guard. Why are you standing up to the incompetent. Inept utterly failed biden harris administration on this issue. Here's a. Tucker carlson said last night we opened the show with horrifying pictures. What's happened at our southern border. Which is completely open in. This country is being invaded. No that's not an overstatement more than a million people this year expected by the rest of the world. It's been going on for months. And we've asked texas governor greg abbott many times to come on this show to explain why he hasn't called the national guard to seal the texas border and protect the rest of us from this invasion. Greg abbott has refused to come on repeatedly so pretty soon possibly tomorrow we plan to invite his primary opponents on this show to describe what they would do if they ran texas. That might be an interesting conversation. Governor abbot one. More chance to come on sincerely. Please come on and tell us how you plan to save the rest of us. What is happening in your state. Isn't that a reasonable request. What is what is texas gonna do texas it roll over. I lived there. I love that state. I know the texas spirit. It's not acquiescence

Restaurant Host Assaulted After Asking for Vaccination Proof
"Last night tourists assaulted a hostess at a restaurant for having the goal to ask reproof vaccination. Do we need the national guard to see people in restaurants at this point. I the woman is telling them i need to see vacs proof of vaccination which i believe is a law in this law and york city which is why not and that's where the tourists in texas. Yeah we'll do your research. That is the look as if you're not vaccinated you will not be eating endorsed. Tantrums are never okay. But the divide we're seeing with mass and mandates and vaccines and everything. How angry people get. It's bringing out this disturbing trend that people don't know like small businesses can't get insurance if they don't prove they're going to have mask mandates in and certain requirements and so people are taking it out on. This was a twenty two year old hostess making next to nothing doing her
Chicago's Lightfoot Asks Biden for Help Amid Crime Wave After Dismissing Trump's Offer
"The image of lori lightfoot asking joe biden for federal help because of the surging explosion of crime in chicago. I remember a president who offered chicago help. I'm let's see who would that be jesse yet. Blond hair believe very tight. Red red tie walk with a swagger so he would send in task forces. You offer the national guard ivy. Is that what you want. America it's crazy.

Political Commentator Bill Roggio's Reaction to Joe Biden's Defiant National Address
"We just heard the man who calls himself the president Blame everybody except himself. And say it's time to focus on threats here in america and al qaeda is decimated when i heard What was happening in kabul and what to expect from the count incumbent. I thought there's one guy. I need to talk to sadly more relevant than ever. When the obama administration wanted to know what's going on with the jihadi international movement they didn't ask the intelligence community they would steal unclassified information from something called the long war journal established by bill roggio senior fellow at the foundation for defense of democracies. I wanna start with the bottom of his resume because he left it at the end of it and it should be the first. He has served this nation as an infantryman as a signalman with the us army and the new jersey national guard embedded with the marine corps and the army in iraq and with the canadians afghanistan. Bill welcome to america first and our millions of listeners. Across the nation as you to join you all right. Thank you for making time today. Everybody needs to check out the long war journal. Just your initial reaction to what you heard from the man who sadly bears the title. Commander in chief speech is just a rehash old excuses that he shape for the failure in afghanistan The president is just he was hell bent on getting out and he was willing to do so at any cost cost of course to american citizens who remain trapped in actress helping an effort to try to some of them out. This is disgraceful in a private citizens. Private citizens should be trying to do this when our own government won't do this Yeah i it's it's frustrating watching this year have you. I really literally am forced to watch these conferences. I'm just you know in one of the big lies. That's comment about being decimated. This is something that i've covered for years. This is alive. It's been told by successive us. In order to justify their betrothal president obama's at it president trump says it and now president biden has. They've used decimated degraded. Done all other you a d. word they use it And this is now where we're have is Listen it's not a resurgence because al qaeda's always in

"At a Massachusetts veterans home are trying to get criminal charges against them. Dismissed after a deadly covid outbreak last year. Lawyers for Holyoke soldiers Home Superintendent Bennett Walsh and former medical director Dr David Clinton argued the state had managed burden of proof. Prosecutors had argued the decision by Walsh and Clinton to cram residents who tested positive for Covid 19 with residents who didn't was negligent. The judge didn't issue a ruling. Another court date is set for October. Rob
"national guard" Discussed on Army Wife Talk Radio
"It's not very common but to say that it doesn't happen at all is true. Okay the six misconception is that the benefits are all the same as regular military and that is a yes no answer so yes we do receive triumph care if we want it and If we wanted we pay for it out of We pay for it monthly. So that's fine. The coverage actually was better than what. I was getting educator and what my husband was getting with his civilian job. It is kind of hard just like other military members you know finding the correct provider or jumping through the hoops and hurdles. Try care but It is there for us now. The coverage is different so if my husband has gone for a long time period his coverage actually gets better which makes sense because he's actually working with the military so as coverage expands. Now this is the part that There's a lot of people trying to fight against it and just get an trying to make it fair for the national guard. Servicemembers is that sometimes. And i've had this mentioned to me in messages and emails and then it happened. My husband just one time Sometimes a servicemember will get orders and their orders will be for ninety days and try care will kick in order Services or not just tracker but other benefits will kick in better after that thirty day mark. Well say they have a ninety day order. That were may be cut in half or cut in threes in not perfect threes or four orders. So you always have to read your orders. Because sometimes it'll say twenty eight days or twenty seven days in. It'll be right next that thirty days but it's not the air in the new order will start than that order will also be cut down to twenty seven days or twenty eight days so They're trying to change that where that doesn't happen anymore. I know it's only happened to my husband wants in thankfully it really wasn't a big deal for us. It's happened to others before it was a big deal. So i'm glad that it is being brought to light and is being. Some attention is being brought to it so that when serves members way they are receiving the same benefits. Okay and our last misconception. Is that the national guards. There civilian job so they are service members and their civilians so that their civilian job not be impacted by their service. Legally you cannot fire someone. Based on the fact that they earned military or that they have to leave because they are in the military and that is true but their jobs can be impacted in have been impacted can tell you from friends very very very close friends and many stories that were emailed to me in message to me that their loved ones jobs were impacted either by a promotion. That was passed up because they weren't there or different jobs that were possibilities for them where their bosses straight up said. You know you are a great. You're perfect one for this. But you're just not here so It just kinda know that in the back of your mind that your job may be impacted. It shouldn't be. It's not right but it will be. Maybe hopefully you guys can find a military friendly job and if it is impacted know that there are rights out there to make sure that it's not impacted too much but there's only so much you can do because at the same time you are serving your country. That's a misconception. That's kinda sad that is it will not be impacted but it is. It's sad it is impacted. While there's just the seven misconceptions that i mentioned i know that there are many many more out there with that. Said i know that national guard servicemembers. The ones that i've met in the ones that have written into me or their spouses artists extremely proud to be able to serve their country as a national guard service member and as a civilian as a wife of national guard service number. I can say that. I am super proud of my husband. He is extremely selfless in the medical medical field and when he serving his country that capacity and when he takes his white coat off and he goes inputs on this cammo he is just as selfless as he is there. So men and women they serve different roles and they wear different hats and they are selfless because they are doing both. It's hard and they are just wonderful for doing it. We can't thank them enough. I believe a thing that we need to remember as houses is that we are all in this crazy military world together so no matter what type of military service set your spouse's doing we are all on this ride together and helping one another building. Each other up is the most important thing that we can do so with. that said. i hope that i can catch you..
"national guard" Discussed on Army Wife Talk Radio
"That was the national guard. Also we see them. In the south a lot with natural disasters they help after tornados or flooding or hurricanes. We had a lot of flooding in my city. Bow three years ago and the engineer came out from the national guard in helped build up the river bed so that our town when applied so without them our town would have flooded and we would not look like the town that we have today so we think our national guard for that very much so we can go ahead and break down that misconception as well. The third misconception is that they are weekend warriors so only one week in about and two weeks in the summer now i bet other national guard spouses or national guard members. That are here in. This are probably laughing with that. I know i am. I remember my husband brought me to his recruiter to kind of ease concerns about everything and i remember the recruiter talent us. You know one weekend a month two weeks. In the summer it will be for basic training in your only russo lucky. Maybe one day that will happen. I don't see happening by it. Just not reality between schools training. He's been gone months on end just like everyone else. So we basic training a s. He's about For bullock so he has been there and then if you wanna think about drill where they are gone on a weekend in a month. They still have to travel to their location. Because we don't live on post so most of the different areas that they the units that they go to they may if they're really lucky in they get left out they may live right next to their post and maybe it is only two days. I had a lot of members message me. I had spouses message me. When i was riding my article and i asked them how far away they lived from the units or what was going on in a lot of them. Tell me three to five hours without the range. My husband lives three hours away from his unit. So that means on friday. He cuts his work short. Someone else comes in for him and he goes to his unit and so that he is there for the full day saturday and sunday and then he leaves late late late sunday night and he comes back so that's more than the weekend. When i think of a weekend. I think we're just saturday's easy breezy. A couple of people actually in his unit live in different states so they haven't fully transferred yet to that state's guard or they are in our states guard and are doing something in the other state temporarily so they have to every state or month so now. Let's talk about those two weeks in the summer. That's called annual training and usually that happens out of state so when you think about it once again if they want that two weeks of training they actually have to go out of state most of the time. sometimes they're lucky in. They can do training at their local Bays or post that closes so far my husband's been in a different state. Every time this last time he was in iowa in they drove up there so they took three days to drive in three days back of and fixing different things meeting and going places so it was a lot more than two weeks and then usually a drill is tacked the end or the beginning in so turns into about two and a half to three weeks so i can usually count that june. He's going to be gone or july. Or maybe like a mixture of june july. But we've yet to have that perfect just two weeks in so we can go ahead breakdown that misconception that it's just weekend warriors okay. Number four misconception. Being national guard spouse doesn't impact us as a spouse. Ouch and yes. It does so loving twin this little bit. Being national guard spouse can be lonely at times We do not as we as a national guard. Spouses do not always live near other national guard spouses where we can talk and how support on one another and be there for one another physically. We can find support online or through different organizations. As i said most of us live hours away from our husbands or spouses units. So finding that physical support can be hard at times in some states. Don't have Frg's that are active or noticeable as active duty would be with that said also our friends that have husbands or spouses that are civilians in not in the military. It's hard for them to connect with us. i've noticed that when i was struggling the very as i've been married to my husband for thirteen years the very first time we are away from each other was when he went to basic training and that was a struggle for me because i was used to being with him since high school in talking to him him and all of a sudden he was gone and the next time i saw him was that the basic training. That was during ovid and everything was scary. We didn't know what was going on. I got three phone calls. So i mean it was just a as you military people listening you know how it is and that was just the the taste airy states military life. I had a lot of friends that tried to gather around me. Try to help me out and would say oh. My husband goes on business trips. Or i you know they go away and everything but what was hard to explain. My husband can't call. He can't facetime me. We write letters back and forth but by the time he gets the letter. It's already been two weeks out. So that's old news so it's hard to find that fine line between where we are. It's kinda like living in two different worlds where one foot is in our regular life that we live every day. One is in this weird military world so finding support is absolutely necessary as a national guard. Why and i think that saying that. It does impact us as a spouse is a huge misconception. We need to break that so that we can help our other national guard spouses and encourage them that they are okay in that they have resources there. They just want you to find them or we can show them the resources there okay. The fifth misconception does not actually apply to me. But i did have enough people. Message me that. I wanted to go ahead and add it. And that is that national guard. Service members will not p. c. s. And so it is unlikely that national guard servicemember will pcs. But to say that they all do not. Pcs is not true so we have some national guard service members who may live in a different part of the state in have to move because they are active national guard service members or higher in command or something like that where they have to work on post once they will not live there like for example for us in arkansas. We have camp robinson in. That's like the main hub host for it. We are lucky. We live thirty minutes away from camp robinson so my husband needs something. It's a short drive. But i know friends who actually lived where my husband's unit is now which is three hours away and they had to move to literal surrounding north lonzo. They live about thirty minutes outside so that her husband can drive to work every day because that's where he had to go and so it is something that happens..

"Seven misconceptions about the national guard. These are misconceptions that i have heard or others who told me throughout my time as a national guard spouse so these are near and dear to me because my husband's in the national guard my husband and i have been married for thirteen years and he's only been in the military though since two thousand nineteen but since then we have had a lot of different misconceptions. Be come about. And i love to be able to share those. And maybe help break some of those misconceptions so that we can help our fellow mill spouses and even our servicemembers. So let's go ahead and dive on in the first and probably the biggest misconception that i have encountered is that the national guard is not part of the military. So let's stop there and say guess they are in fact heart in the military. In fact they were very first part they were are minute men. Remember when we started our country. I to fight. They picked up arms and they help us form our country in now. They've turned into the national guard. They don't have their own branch. They are actually sub branches or sub categories of the army and the air force. So you might hear army national guard or air national guard and those are the little areas that they're in. I guess some people may be confused and think they might not go to the same trainings or schools but rest assured our national guard goes to the exact same trainings in the exact same schools as active duty so when my husband enlisted he went to fort jackson and he did basic training just like everybody else There wasn't anything special that he didn't have to do or did do he. Was right there with the active duty dies in women and the reserves. I mean he was right there with them. And that's the other thing is that national guard is different than the reserves. So and that would be a totally different topic to talk about right. Now are just gonna vote this on the national guard. Another thing that i thought was interesting was when my husband swore in he soaring in two thousand nineteen October sos right before the pandemic really hit hit america. And because of that. We didn't really you know none of that. Was there so imagine. Life pre pandemic and i was able to actually go and watch my husband in and First of all. I felt so much pride in that room. And the very people to swear an where the active duty members and they swore in and gave their oath to our country to protect and honor them and honor it and then after that was national guard. And i haven't had much experience with national guard before because my family came from active duty air force so i didn't really understand why they swore in seconds differently and then when i was listening to the oath it made complete sense because not only do they have an oath to uphold to the president of the united states but they also have an oath to uphold the governor of their units state so for example. We live in arkansas and my husband's swore to the united states of america and also to protect arkansas. And so we like to joke that he has to bosses. He has the president and the governor. In if you think about like back in history if you take yourself back to history class and if you haven't heard of this is something good to go look up. It is m very interesting and you should know this from history but when we talk about like a segregation desegregation of schools there will as the little rock nine in central high and as a huge historical moment in american history. And that actually was when the national guard was activated by the president and then activated. Also by the governor. So we have right there. In instance where. A governor anna president both activated the national guard so yes they are part of the military they do exactly what the military dies. It just looks tiny. Bit different okay. So our nest misconception that we're going to break down is that the national guard does not deploy. This is a false misconception. This just absolutely wrong. They do deploy in. This actually breaks my heart to hear people say this because to me i think immediately of those men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country who were national guard members and it's like their service was just overlooked. We wanna remember their service and we wanna thank them and thank everyone who has been deployed with the national guard and other branches as well. But i want you guys to know that they do boy in fact if you read my article that i wrote. It's on army wife network dot com called the misconceptions of the national guard. I have a citation there Where you can go. Look that led. National guard has been deployed in every us major conflict world wars civilize any of the conflicts after world wars so they have been deployed in attached to units and have been overseas in fact they still are. We just said goodbye to one of the units here in arkansas and they just were deployed They're gonna go down for training and then go overseas so they do deploy and not only do they deploy they also are activated stateside so when year activation. That is win. They are being used over here. And a president can activate them or the governor. and what that looks like is Somebody who has made seen that more recently over the last year in twenty twenty with riots in crowd control or at the capitol with staying guard..

"No i get you so you actually in november of eighty four. Eighty four dodge. Well it was. It was a couple of months before i was born. You know today to no. You should definitely shouldn't experienced matters right so so you entered an eighty four start off is off it is how do you say that is. Air force base nebraska. That was my first duty assignment. After i completed my basic military training my texaco. So did you start off your career as active duty. Gotcha so when did you transit transition to their national guard. And why did you decide to leave active duty marine and yeah. That's a long story that i won't go into but after five dates known each other three weeks we got engaged story. Yeah i was thirty four years later. Were still here okay. It should never worked okay. But he had an active duty marine at an active duty airman and never the twain shall meet right so he already ten years in the marine corps. So made sense for me. I did not want to get out. I loved the air force. it was my calling. It was my niche. But i was able palace chase which is a fancy couple words for transfer into the air national guard. I had about a year and a half left on my contract the requirement was you. Give the guard double the time back. Then you had on your activity contracts. So i had to give at least three or commitment to the national guard which i was fine with that. I didn't plan on getting out anyway. So that way. It allowed me to transfer with my husband so my first my family yep so my first national guard state was california and i served three years in california guard and then he got orders to y answer that i picked up to and transferred to the hawaii national guards and twenty years later. That's great no No you defied the statistics as me and my wife did as well. We got married seven or we got engaged seven months after my my deployment. So right there with you into situations. Yeah no it'd be it is it is. We're coming up on thirteen years now. Thirteen fourteen years being together so now definitely it's great didn't know you're married marine. Love that of the store during your time in service Gimme either a best friend or.

"I'm looking at my minute man right now. That's our symbol of the national guard. Where you know back back. In those days that businessmen women put down their tools of commerce. They picked up their musket to defend the homeland. And we're still doing it today now. The reserves are part of this bureau. Right 'cause is that due to the base differences of the guard being more of the state entities and the reserve as the federal. Got yourself the national bring enquirer sarg arms or sorry about that including we love them all absolutely absolutely interesting. We'll we'll get into a bit but one of the first questions will always ask here on born. The battle is where and when did you know that military service was going to be the next step in your life. I had gone through some changes in my young adult life right at been married divorced and i was working at a bank and i just saw no future outside of my hometown. I felt like. I'm just going to be stuck here. Didn't have a higher level education. Go ahead married divorced before your service. Yes wow which was tough. Tough tough. And as i did and a decision not made lightly at all in being very very strong devout catholic family and thank god. I had this of my family especially my father. Otherwise things can look completely different so yeah i had been married and divorced probably before i went into the airforce about four years already so it was a chance meeting really back in the day. If you remember you probably too young for this but back in the day people actually brought their checks into the bank to deposit them on friday afternoon right after they got off work. Physical hard check and i was you know on the teller line and i had befriended lots of people small town us. Sixty five hundred. I knew everybody that came to that big this soldier from the minnesota army national guard in. She and i will chat every every week when she would come in every week and just chit chat and one day she walked in. She said to me denise. I see so much potential in you than this. Why don't you join the airforce and get out of this town. It was kind of like that. The eight moment right. My dad is a career war veteran he served in the minnesota army national guard for couple of decades. But do you talk to kids about service to our country but what it meant to put on a uniform. It he didn't talk about. You know the benefits education and learning a job skill or any of those types of things so when when my good friend staff sergeant joyce madsen than at the time. She said that she literally drove me to the next time. Too sick day right. She drove me to the neighboring town of the recruiter. Let me say that day. You is on his game. In a good way. Though is either everything hook line and sinker. He talked about serving our country in what that meant about what the uniform stood for but with our fly emmy talked about all that adriatic piece first and then he talked about learning a job skill and education benefits which was really something that.

"Capitol police were prepared and overwhelmed. When violent trump supporters began breaching the us capital last week members of the dc national guard ultimately arrived to assist but only after hours of chaos at the building. Wmu's dominique maria. Manetti is with us now to talk about what we know about the delay. Thanks dominic thank you. Jonathan remind us. I what is the national guard. And who's responsible for deploying them locally. The national guard is the us military's domestic force each state the district and puerto rico have their own national guard. Units typically. The governor of each state has the authority to activate guard troops within that state's borders but because of the district's finicky federal status of not being state. It's a bit different here. Mayor miro browser doesn't have the same authority over the dc national guard that governors have over their states and she can only request guard troops from the secretary of the army. And just to add. Another layer of confusion. Bowser can only request guard troops to land that belongs the city and that excludes federal territory like the us capitol complex okay. So let's turn to the specific morning of january six. What was the national guard's presence in dc and at the capital so there were already three hundred and forty d. c. guard troops on city streets to help with local police preparing for crowd and traffic control for wednesday's protests but none of them had permission to deploy on federal land like the us capital when the angry mob reached the capital wednesday afternoon balancer and then capitol police chief stephen son new to defile additional request to the army secretary in order to send in additional troops and expand the responsibilities. Okay so what we know about why. The deployment was delayed. There are different accounts from local and state officials as the pentagon about what the confusion was during wednesday's attack which led to the d'alene deployment bowser. I requested additional forces from the army secretary ryan mccarthy around one thirty and that's according to a full-time line released by the department of defense then at one forty nine pm sunday called commanding general that he national guard william walker asking for immediate assistance that was followed by at least three more phone calls between the district. Capital police and pentagon officials son. Who has since resigned. Says he requested guard troops five times during the insurrection and was rejected or delayed at one point. Army officials said they could not recommend sending in additional troops because of the optics of having soldiers inside. The capitol building was not something they wanted an finally at around three. Pm army secretary ryan mccarthy again directed the philosophy the dc national guard troops arrived at the capitol around five forty pm hours after the insurrection had begun and after the mayor had requested the troops. Okay so what happens now. Is they're going to be an investigation into what should have happened differently. Yeah federal lawmakers are already calling for an investigation into why it took the district's national guard so long to the capital president elect joe biden is also calling for an investigation into maryland's national guard. And why they were delayed. Governor larry hogan last week said the were delay before the maryland. National guard troops were approved to go into dc maryland. Guard troops arrived day later. But if you look back on all this there's a lot of bureaucracy that really had to happen to get troops to the us capital and the new york times reported that president trump initially rebuffed and resisted requests to mobilise national guard in that it required the intervention from the white house officials to get it done and they're certainly going to be a lot more coming out about this in the next weeks and months ahead. What is the status of troops in the district right now. National guard troops from the district. Maryland virginia delaware pennsylvania. New jersey and new york intend to be in the city through the inauguration. The national guard bureau says the intend to have ten thousand troops in the city by a saturday with the possibility to increase that up to fifteen thousand if needed this all comes as law enforcement is bracing for further right wing official and unofficial protests in the coming days and weeks. because of the demand and I'm trying to be as vigilant as possible you know about being a and everything but it's really hard to do in the south circumstances they are because they are the people have to deal with the people signing paperwork people you know and just fatigue correct yeah so I'm I'm very worried concerned that a I might be one of them fifty five percent hello and and you know being at my age as it might be pretty serious yup you're right as I have to tell you it is incredibly frustrating being trying to be safe and I have friends who say they're going stir crazy in our homes I actually have a friend whose wife won't kiss him because she says you've been out and about I don't want to be an effective that is a that is a fact and going around in my house too and because of the nature of my wife's business which I won't indulge the house has to be Terrel there because she works from home and that's how she does start anyway yeah so I don't know what the I don't know what to you all the people he could in fact he could get sick himself with the virus please Joe listen to the experts and you know it's interesting we all of you listen very selfish way I understand that but we can't afford to be selfish Kelly four one five eight zero eight zero eight ten let me go to Nicholas calling from Santa Rosa Nicholas you waited a long time thank you so much he also has a growing very well I yes so you know there's a couple things I want to mention my main point is that I listen to both our president trump yesterday when I listen to Justin Trudeau out man when I heard Justin Trudeau I felt good I felt calm I felt like if I was a Canadian I would have felt somewhat confident and calm and somewhat collected he he graded out where the average Canadian would be sweet receive a check every week for the next fourteen weeks and let me tell you what his wife has the virus and has isolated herself and he has isolated himself as well and under that extra pressure it was especially I I just got to give them kudos whereas with our president I'm a lift driver I don't know when I'll see an income again unfortunately it's not going to wreck me but it's not helping me of course and you know what forget about myself you know but with trump all these people in the in the in the class of a like a gig worker or a substitute teacher they don't even know where they stand at this point he's not making it clearer who's getting what it's all a cluster I will do the work you know mish mosh it's confusing to the average person or even some people somewhere just jaded so I think that's a big problem and and of course you know I spoke to you about a week before the Chinese New Year and I said to land and I mentioned to you you know the exponential nature of this disease this dammit coming out but why don't we call it that and then we mention towards town and I know you kind of friends when I said that there have been a very difficult time there you can almost an hour talk about talked about it in fact because many of the restaurateurs here are friends of mine and that way I think you were only sent out yeah I am and look look what you know but you know the last my "The president can call them the national guard. The governor can call in the national guard is that the only two positions that can make use of the of the call out, right. And when you win, the national guard gets called out of your reservist. How do you get contacted? Like what's what happens when the call is made? Did it used to be pagers or someone just call everybody? I do remember the days of of phone trees. You know, I, I remember once being in college and that's how far for just for this practice to see how fast I could get a hold of me like the department secretary knocking on the door of my classroom. Pulling me out. Oh, that's. I mean, I guess they really ought to get you on this one. Yeah, she's in biology class. There's some pretty great automatic system. So like I don't know if you've seen this and other areas, but where you get those like emergency alert messages on your cell phone. Kind of like an auto, right? So within units they can set that up. So you get like a robo text message in an email all at the same time. I'm wondering about win that buzzer goes off. You know, is there like a little thrill of like, whoa, something's happening and we're going to jump in and go do it. Like, is it? I think everyone has their own personal experience. My time in the national guard of always really enjoyed those kinds of disaster response missions. I think that was one of the things that motivated me to go on the other hand. I know for a lot of people, you know, especially in like a a serious disaster, the the responsibility to go report for your national guard duty means you're probably leaving your family and friends and your home and a rather precarious state. So you're walking away from, you know, say the tree that is blocking your driveway to go report in and try to help your community. And that's a hard situation to be on. Once you're. Called out to do some relief, for example, do you stay there until the sort of mission is done? Like, do you sleep in tents? Is their barracks set up for you, folks share? It all depends on the situation. I live in Washington DC. So most of the time we can stay in the DC armory and you'll kind of like sat up and kind of like a big gem and some of these kind of larger scale disaster-relief events it. It becomes kind of routine where people can either get back and forth to their own homes or like I spoke with someone who during Hurricane Katrina, they were billeted or like they were living in a fraternity house at Tulane university was the arrangement they'd set up. So when it comes to the history of the national guard, there's all these moments that are just sort of in my mind, the national guard was called out to do X and I think the one that's most prevalent for me is Kent state, but I know very little about what actually. It happened at that time. Is this something you could tell me about? Sure. There's a law passed in eighteen seventy eight called the posse Comitatus act and that basically that Tatas it's amazing. So I go on. I actually just look that up. And yes, there is a Latin root to posse Comitatus basically means to like bring your strength together, but the posse exactly. That's where it comes from. And so within this posse Comitatus act basically says that federal troops cannot be used for law enforcement. However, state troops can be used for law enforcement there. It is, right. So during the nineteen sixties, the national guard was used quite a bit for civil unrest. You see a lot of national guard call ups around nineteen sixty eight on at the death of Dr. Martin Luther King specifically here in DC and at Vietnam protests. So the Kim. State event is an instance of state national guard, the Ohio national guard being called out in kind of a law enforcement functions supporting local law enforcement during a protest that protests turned violent and is one of those moments where I think the national guard has an organization kind of stepped back afterwards and looked at our relationship with the communities that we serve. Now, the national guard is still used in that role. You know, as recently as this year, we have had national guard troops at the women's March or at the March for our lives. And most of the time people appreciate having the national guard there. We tend to be something a presence there where you know, you can kind of feel like there's more security there, but you know, these are people from your own community. So aside from the posse Comitatus act. What what has happened that has changed the way that the national guard can operate. There's always kind of been this evolution the national guard before between how much state control you have and how much federal control you have until about nineteen. O three state national guards were funded either through the state or personally. So specifically officers would come in. They'd pay dues, they would raise the regiment. You might have vastly different uniforms or quit -ment from the unit one town over or especially across states. So the constitution kind of outlines as far as you know, having a militia that the state can train it. However, it wants to select their own officers, but it has to be to a certain standard. Okay. And so that all really changes in nineteen? Oh three. With the dick act who was named after Major General, Charles dick, who was a congressman. Mun and a member of the Ohio national guard dots kind of the first time that this trade off happens where the federal government comes in and says, you know, we want more oversight of what is happening in the national guard. And then in exchange they pay for more. It isn't until nineteen O three that the federal government starts paying for some equipment. And at that point you got five paid training days a year, how many now. So now the typical national guard commitment is thirty eight days per year. We were both talking earlier about Little Rock after the desegregation laws were passed. Could you tell us about that? That's another kind of interesting moment. In national guard history, national guard troops were used all over the country as part of desegregation efforts. Now in Little Rock, it happened to be this rare occasion where the governor of that state had actually called up their national guard to keep. The African American students from going to school. It is very rare to be able to use federal troops for law enforcement. And if you look at the pictures, that is the case where then the president called the hundred and first airborne to escort those students end. So if you look at the pictures from Little Rock, there's state national guard troops and federal troops there. How if titled ten is invoked can a governor say No MR president might national guard will not be doing that in no way. Am I like any kind of constitutional scholar? But essentially the the president does get to call it the national guard, and that does outweigh the governor's objection. But the hat is a question that is constantly in flux. Probably one of the more recent moments where that came up was during Hurricane Katrina. You know, we had hundreds of thousands of national guard soldiers mobilized in Iraq and Afghanistan. So there was kind of a big shortage. Edge of national guard troops for hurricane relief. At that point, some of these government governors started stepping up and particularly with things like aviation resources. So like helicopters which are hugely important in disaster relief saying, like, you know, we want more of a discussion when our helicopters leave the state, especially in states that are, you know, say like in the hurricane belt, is there anything that you'd want America to know about the national guard? I think one of the things I find really interesting about the national guard is how diverse it is over time, particularly since nineteen seventy. And you know, we became a country that doesn't use a draft or conscription anymore. We tend to have these communities that are very military friendly, and everyone joins the military and largely those communities are in the midwest in the south. But then we have the national guard and that is an organization. The by design spread out equally across all the states. And it brings in all kinds of interesting people and and because it's not a full time commitment, you bring in all of these people who have other things going on in their life, their teachers or doctors, their lawyers. There are police officers and they kind of come together to do this thing to serve their communities one week in a month. But you get this just huge array of like life experience. That was Miranda summers, low military historian for the Smithsonian at the national museum of American history and a member of the army national guard.
