Massive Cape Town Fire Damages University Buildings and Forces Evacuations

"Have been evacuated from South Africa's University of Cape Town after a wildfire on the slopes of nearby Table Mountain is Tim Allman reports. The fire began on part of the mountain called Appropriately enough. Devil's Peak, huge, billowing clouds of smoke drifting into a brilliant blue cape town sky. Firefighters desperately trying to get the flames under control, but pretty soon they had spread to the campus at the local university. Historic buildings damaged hundreds of students forced to flee for safety Also in the path of the fire, the city's historic mustards mill The oldest surviving on only working windmill in South Africa now burned out and almost completely destroyed. Hikers in the table man's in National Park were urged to leave. But it was a pretty close run thing for this cyclist. You suddenly found himself surrounded by smoke. Flames smoke. My eyes can't see he did eventually managed to make it home safely away Day helicopters have flown back and forth. Dumping thousands of gallons of water on the mountain below. People have been told to stay inside and keep their windows shut. The battle goes on.

What to Expect at Apple's 'Spring Loaded' Event

"Going to have an event there their spring event the call it spring loaded which you know i mean you can spend a little too much energy reading apples tea leaves. They don't tell you anything but implies that it's going to be a big event it's loaded right with stuff hard to know exactly what apple is going to announce You we get some leaks from the what they call the supply chain that the people who manufacture it mostly in china. It's hard to control those leaks for apple. Apple's pretty good at keeping its employees from telling anybody anything but You know the factory workers in china they're low paid. It's probably not too hard to get them to you. Know leak out information. So the supply chain has some information for instance We're pretty sure. The rumor mill. We not me. i don't know anything. The rumor mill is pretty. Sure there'll be a new ipad but it'll be the high anti has the ipad pro and they're kind of do a year old now. I actually love the ipad pro. It's expensive it's as expensive as a laptop computer so it's really buying a laptop once you had the keyboard and the track pad and the you know it. It's really buying a laptop with A more of a i o s like operating system so it kinda depends on what you prefer. It's a simpler operating system. If you're used to desktop computing might feel a little constricted but on the other hand. Simpler is easier to use for people like roger. It's really a or anybody who doesn't want to be a computer whiz. It's always a good choice. The ipad pro. We think we'll have a new screen technology that apple is going to be embracing across all its ipads and laptops called many led and really. It's an lcd screen. Just like they've been using but with a better backlight system little tiny. Led's across the whole back so it's got full array local dimming. The technology they talk about. Which gives you better contrast ratio. Because you really a better picture

We call this sort of behaviour by man machismo. There's no english equivalent for my cheese. Mill it is idea of hyper masculinity that dictates what a man and a society are supposed to be it is everywhere and it's made a lot of people believe that men are superior to women. There we start our conversation off with just leeann explaining what drives her leadership and why she was inspired to run for office in the first place. So here is just linkohr. So you're running for city council district. Twenty-three in queens. Was there a particular issue in your community that pushed you to run something that made you angry. Something that you're passionate about. What pushed you into this race. Yeah for me. I never saw myself as someone who wanted to run for office. But i think i was really just tired of having a kind of government. That doesn't actually respond to the working people so for me. I am the daughter of a taxi driver. My dad has been a taxi driver for nearly thirty years. Now but we have been dealing with a taxi medallion debt crisis for about seven years at this point. And so i look back at points in my life like back. In two thousand fourteen where the markets were being inflated artificially by medallion brokers who really preying on a majority of immigrant working class people who thought that a taxi medallion would be a really worthwhile. Investment was worth a mill- a million dollars back in the ninety s and into the early two thousands so in that market we came under almost hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt almost overnight and it is devastating for so many families that are close to us our neighbors our family friends and when you look at the state of our city these are the kinds of workers who generate worth of revenue. I city but don't have pension don't have a retirement fund and get people like my father who are sixty two years old and still working these fourteen hour shifts in the middle of a pandemic. So i see myself as somebody who really wants to champion the rights of many of our gig economy workers who have just been categorically left out of political process. How does this

Being the best with Tony Herbert, "Soldier"

"Podcast to seventy three. We were with anthony. Herbert tony herbert. Also known ass and we started off his journey from a kid growing up in pennsylvania surf. You haven't listened to podcasts. To seventy three goal of that right now. He tried to join the marines at fourteen. Fourteen years old credit eventually joined the army at seventeen off. The korean war went from private to master sergeant. All kinds of heroic actions suffered all kinds of wounds shot hit with frag white phosphorus burns and also bayoneted multiple times including one bayonet stabbed that broke off in his chest. He in the korean war served as a platoon leader even though he was just a young enlisted guy and eventually at the end of that podcast and at the end of that part of his life. Us pulled off the battlefield. One of the most decorated soldiers of the war sent on a morale at it was basically morale tour and i were flown back to the to the white house. President truman and then basically went to london and antwerp in brussels and the hague and all the other european allies that were fighting alongside america in the korean war along the way he met. Mrs eleanor roosevelt. She encouraged him to go to college. He kind of agreed of the quotes. He says in the book is he. He agreed because he was already master sergeant in the army and he said what am i going to do. Sit around the enlisted man's club telling stories about korea so he was sort of not not over it but he realized that he'd kinda done what he was going to do. So he ends up getting assigned as an rotc instructor at a high school in denver because he liked to ski goes to the third ranger class. That ever happened. He was in. He ends up getting married to his hometown. Sweetheart mary grace starts going to college or he then he gets out of the army then starts going to college at the university of pittsburgh while he's there he writes a book called conquest. No war nowhere. Which was his first book about the korean war which he later rewrote which we covered. What when it was rewritten was called the making of a soldier. That was podcast to seventy three for the most part worked at a steel mill at night while he was going to college and then eventually commissioned as an officer in the pennsylvania national guard. Shout out to the To two eight iron soldiers all right so so then he goes to the. He's back kind of in the army and he gets them warnings at the army's different now you know the war is over. The good people got out. We just left with people. That shouldn't even be in the army that got those kind of warnings but he stayed in. He loves being a soldier he wants to be. A soldier. goes the basic army. Infantry course wins nine out of ten awards there including the leadership trophy which is the leadership. Trophy is awarded by the other students. Like the other students select. Who deserves this leadership trophy. Then he gets assigned as a ranger instructor and he starts. He starts in the mountain phase. And so today we're going to be reading so the first book that we covered we covered a little bit so he's written two books he's written. Three one was conquest to know where that one got rewritten. As the making of a soldier that was the bulk of what we read last time. This time we're gonna read from his second book primarily and it's just called soldier called soldier and lots of lessons learned but as i mentioned in the first podcast in two seventy three. There's some serious lessons learned about life and things get really crazy when he goes to vietnam as a battalion commander and we will get there all right so here we go go go to the book soldier written by anthony be herbert and he says this teaching young men the essentials of mountain climbing combat and survival was more of a learning experience for me than for them. I began discovering things about the resources in me as well as the way the army was moving. I was an

"Tonight. The end of the run of the mill a decision by the premier of Nova Scotia means a paper mill will shut down which employees say is a thoughtless act. The local first nation says. It's an active reconciliation thirst case scenario amid scorching temperatures. I'm one of Australia's worst ever droughts. Donald trump fails once again to turn the other cheek after an editorial in an Evangelical magazine calls for him to be removed from office. We recommend the soup for Hanukkah starts this weekend. So we'll ladle out a generous portion of seasonal inspiration. Barber buds reading of bone button. Borscht with a lot on the line so is he. We will revisit the night of March Twenty First Nine thousand nine hundred seventy seven when a man who'd taken hostage isn't a Toronto Bank took a call from as it happens host Bob Refund and at portrait of the artist as a young woman instead of being thrown off. She threw on and now twenty eighty five year old fallon. Sheriff is the first woman to win a match at the World Darts Championship as it happens. The Friday edition radio. That's impressed by the way I. She drove her points out the for a local first nation. It's a long and hard fought victory but for workers at Nova Scotia Osha paper mill. It's the end of the line today. The province's Premier Stephen McNeil refused to grant an extension that would allow northern pulp to continue pumping wastewater order into boat harbor near Picton lending first nation that closure will effectively mean workers at northern pulp paper mill and pick county are out of work and put thousands of jobs in the forestry sector at risk speaking today premier McNeil blamed the company seeing it had had years to act but failed to deliver a plan for its. It's waste that meets environmental standards. Northern pulp is head a number of chances to get this right and yet here we are now. I have to turn my attention to the workers in the mill at the sawmills across Nova Scotia and private woodland owners and all those those who work in the forest sector in every corner of our province. I know this could not have come at a worse time for you. But the company has failed to respect the timelines given to them. Five years ago. I know this is hard on a lot of people and you were going to be feeling feeling this but I also want you to know you are not alone we have not forgotten you and I have made it clear that this transition is a top top priority. That's Nova Scotia Premier. Stephen McNeil speaking earlier today he also announced a fifty million dollar transition fund to help those in the forestry sector affected affected by today's decision among them Sandy Macdonald who works at the northern pulp mill. We reached him on the road. Nova Scotia Sandy. We just heard Tameer Stephen McNeil sounding emotional. He says he hasn't forgotten you. Do you feel that's the case. Feel that you haven't been forgotten. Oh I would. I'd say he turned his back on the entire industry. And in this province. You know in the Clinton you mentioned about northern Paul coming up short time time again but that's not true and and everybody in the industry knows that's true and They don't believe anything he's saying today. What's in it for him because this is not exactly gonNA to help him politically? This is something he said. He has an obligation to do. He made this commitment that he would not amend the boat. Harbor Act. This would proceed indeed. So why do you think he's made the decision I I'm not sure I'm not sure he He you know. He made his his decision. Of course and you know he's a prima in your providence. That doesn't have a lot of money to be paying for certain things and you know we have an aging population and we have healthcare crisis. There's people that don't have doctors. There's people dying in waiting rooms. And he just wiped out an entire industry part of me thinks that it was He didn't like the the spotlight being on him for being basically the judge jury and executioner with this whole project that you know if if they granted us an approval or whatever. It was going to look bad on. Oh man because of the way the entire thing unfold but nobody nobody in this province believes that boat harbor should say open. They totally agree with the premium. I should close boat harbor being the the estuary where there's effluence has been going in since the nineteen sixties. That shouldn't continue right as you're saying that people agree that that's that's the case people agree that has the clothes and it has to be cleaned up the preen. You're in two thousand fifteen issued an order. The Boat Harbor Act that it was going to close within twenty twenty as opposed to twenty thirty As our treatment facility for for the affluent at the pulp mill I'm not trying to to to stick up the company company and I. I never was wanted to do that. But in this case this was this was a company that had a lease to use boat harbor till twenty thirty The premier decided to close ten years early. which is you know whatever he wants to close he's GonNa close early? He's going to see that it's closed and I commend him for that what. I don't commend him for is to arbitrarily put a date on something when he didn't know how long it takes to get a new facility built The the goal line on kept kept moving down the field We you know however many years ago We had Seven studies to do today today as we speak here. Caroline studies went up to sixty eight studies. These things take time. They take months they take years to do and the time line didn't change. That's the point. I guess that the premier is making. He said that the company appears to be dragging its feet. It's had every opportunity it's had five years to rectify this this that did Filed incomplete environmental assessments. That it didn't come up with a plan that worked and he said quote. He said that what was acceptable in the nineteen sixties non-acceptable in twenty twenty. And that that you can't keep circumventing a process on an environment. So he's saying that they were the ones who drag at the C.. They could have come up with a plan that worked. They didn't he said that. But companies are this size and with a product. That's so important. They worked hand in hand with department the Environment and they did everything was asked to them. Once the environmental sesame assessment and decision sorry in March by the minister that they needed to focus report because there was questions come up from the public consultations and the answer them. Well a bunch more questions pop up and all of a sudden they they fell short. And that's what they said. In March they fell short. They didn't fall short they they've they fell short given the new questions that come up throughout this but this is you know. The minister said the other day. This is how this is the process at work. This was supposed to work. But you know there's families crying today Grown men that I work with calling me texting me What's going on what's going to happen? I I mean I'm not there on the road at the moment and I really wish I could be but it's not a good thing do you. You really think the company was working in good faith. It was really trying to come up with a solution. Do you believe I. I believe that with my heart I do like I said I. There's people in there that I I don't care for but there's a lot of people that I trust and I know they're working on diligently so what does this mean because they they are going to close the plant. What does it mean for you and your family? Well this is what we've been discussing We're like we're on a road trip back from Ontario and You know what now We'll have to still pretty early to know what the details of everything you're gonna be but These retraining I guess I'll have to figure out what to do from here Decide on a new career. I worked there nine years and I thought I'd probably retire there. It was a good steady place to work. And they treat you pretty good and the good paying job and good benefits and you know this is just A. It's just a comedy of errors in and with the provincial government. Kind of ask you. Finally this has been discussed as I mean on the political end of it as this would be premium. McNeil's legacy and Ah on one hand. It's those are saying yes. This is a good legacy for the made. This decision others are saying that this is the legacy he wants. He certainly going to get it and it's not good. Where do you stand on on the issue of his legacy and his project? Well his legacy Could have been a lot better. Kerley could have had a legacy that he shut down boat harbor and cleaned it up and kept the forestry interesting going today you got one of those wishes and few days before Christmas of Twenty Nineteen He broke a Lotta hearts and he. He decimated the forestry industry. I'm happy for the people. Pick the landing first nations that this is this is what's going to happen but it's it's struck a divide. Oh I didn't count in the county. It's striking dividing the province. These gentleman that are in their fifties and sixties that have done nothing else but but work in the woods. What's fifty million dollars worth of training going to do any of those people? Sandi really appreciate speaking with you. Thanks for your time Bye Bye Sandy. MacDonald is one of three hundred and fifty employees at the northern pulp mill in picked. Oh County Nova Scotia. We reached him on the road in Nova Scotia. Mr. McDonald and his co workers. Maybe maybe upset about today's decision but a local first nation is calling it an act of reconciliation for years. They've been pushing the government to close and clean up northern pulps wastewater undertreatment facility Andrew. Paul is the chief of the pistol lending first nation. She spoke to reporters after today's announcement. It's been been a long time coming I'm very grateful I knew soon to be easy for people are out Nova Scotia and I do. I don't take that lightly and Thank you for putting an end to this pollution and thank you you for allowing us the opportunity to heal there will be those tonight in the province who are not that pleased with his actions people in the forestry industry and those connected it to those families what do you say to them tonight. It's what breaks my heart to it. The difficult time for sure and in town I wish then pop had done better for them. You wish northern pulpit made more use of the five five years or maybe you've been able to accomplish more than five years in terms of environmental assessment work definitely. I wish they had taken this a lot more seriously. I wish they had put the work in. That was required. I wish they had satisfied. Everybody that was around that table at the end of the day after two failed projects that they submit it. Nobody should be looking at anybody else. Except for northern pulp for the record her. That's chief Andrew. Paul of pickle landing first nation speaking to reporters earlier.

"And so although you can find food proteins in brass mill it's it's very from mom to mom now that being said there are there is some evidence that breastfeeding along with early and sustained allergy introduction has benefits or preventing food allergies? And it may be that when food allergens or sort of transmitted through breastfeeding, they an along with moms antibodies moms and cells, they can sort. Be packaged altogether. And it might prime the immune system to develop horri- when those food allergens are directly ingested within a few months by the baby. And so again there is there is research there. But it's there's nothing that that has been fully proven in in order to change guidelines. So currently the guidelines are moms who are breastfeeding and even moms who are pregnant should not specifically avoid allergenic foods thinking that it will prevent or protect their baby from developing food, allergies. So we want lost. You know to have a very diet include allergens in their diets pregnant moms breastfeeding moms if they're able to tolerate those foods, not avoiding them for for specific reasons. But we don't believe that breastfeed. Eating alone without early oral exposure to foods that's frequent..

"The power friendship, hope and healing in cedars this Christmas. Let's talk for a second about meek mill. Okay. So I'm going to be honest. I didn't know who make mill was until this view, and I I was was really reliable. about the booking because I'm from Philly, and he's a huge story in Philly. So meek mill is a hip hop artists from Philly right and meek mill when he was really young by the Philadelphia police, and he did a little time. And he encountered a he encountered a judge in Philly who is a really tough judge. And so when he was released from prison, you know, years later he was on a very strict parole and while he was on while he was on parole. He was in New York City, and he rode motorcycle on only his back wheel. He wrote a Whealy as I used to call it right in New York City, and he got a ticket for it. He then posted that video on Instagram. Yes. And how'd that go of his judge? The judge saw it was a parole violation. He was called in for it. And he was put back in jail so began an odyssey in which everyone in the country, including the DA of the city of. Adelphia who would normally be charged with prosecuting crimes? Everybody in cute, including him wanted meek mill freed, and this judge would not do it. And so free meek mill became like, a national trending topic a national campaign by some of the biggest, you know, celebrities in the country, and he was finally released from prison. I think last may and he and he flew by helicopter. He didn't know he was being released. They they kept it a secret from him. They didn't want a big crowd there. Too late joined crowd showed up he went via helicopter from prison to a Sixers game. It was just an unbelievable story. And he's like a really incredible guy. Who's now he's still an artist. He's still a musician. He's got a new album out, but he's dedicating his life to prison reform. And so we booked them to talk to him. He didn't perform we booked him to talk to them. Ellen was fascinated by him. I thought it was I thought it was fascinating. Yeah. So you're in for for stupid reasons, you shouldn't have been in there. And you had no idea that so many people were fight. Adding to get you out. You had no idea. I did have an idea after like the fourth day the first week. I was I was being a public figure. They put me like a loan. Twenty three hours a day when I got out I actually start watching the news on TV. And I was saying like CNN like big TV stations talk about my situation must be. Yeah. Good. These situations. People go to Jovan these things all the time. Marnie things not even committing crime. Which people don't understand a lot of people will see somebody violated. Violated could've been loitering star. But it could have been anything. Yeah. Police contact violation. So a lot of people would say he belongs in jail. I didn't commit a crime and good since I've been. Yeah. No, you did not belong in jail at all you didn't. So so how do you? So the day you find out you're getting out. What did you know, you're getting out or did? They just came to you and said you go. I was in my so I just cooked have race in macro. They go they sell like a macro fish, and I was eating and I was watching the news actually three or four o'clock time you show come on east coast, four o'clock. Watching the news and mill is. Jumped up in the air. And you know, I was leaving ten minutes later. So you get out and you saw all the people outside waiting for you. I came out side. I was kind of like dizzy. Yeah. That's amazing to see that many people supporting you and celebrating you getting out how long were you in five and a half months. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you're out now until you're the face of criminal Justice reform, and and did you ever get to this point just having grown up in an Enviro. environ?.

"There's a spot for I really do again, maybe not against mill, but there's a spot for it. So the the deck I played was snow was lead smoke elite, Sienna, and battle joy. So you know, the first question is why not yellow in there, and I don't know. I don't know why not yell was the list that I was given didn't have any yellow in it, and I just I didn't have time to relieve just that list. Then I really liked it. I really loved it playing it. I've never had a lot of fun playing vehicles and this one, man, it is something about it. When you're throwing that many dice around in a five dice start, which that deck is there. That is pretty powerful. And I know there's a lot of people who really don't build other than five die start. You know, even if the dice are average for a little bit below average, it's when you when you can just blitzed the field with Dyson. There's so many different options that you have with that. It's I think, powerful. But then when you sit down for the first round and you end up. Playing your best friend who's playing mill. We get paired together. I think just games it's a, it's it's definitely controversy. Controversy. Let's say I don't think it was coincidental, but I love mad at just gains, but I don't think that was coincidental. How do we get paired? That's punishment punishment. And the game went great and enjoyed playing Zack who's the only other guy play lately and game was in hand, and I just got too excited for the finish line too excited for the finish line. The last card play of the game. Can you guess what it was? I'll give you a second last card played in the game. Yeah, hyperspace jump game over. I just didn't see coming. That's that's dumb. That's dumpling. It didn't see a common than it. Was it? Man? I had tons of dice ready to go, and that was a frustrating thing to have happened. But here's here's say about that. The game was fun. I can't even believe I'm saying, but that game was fun. Like it was felt even it felt like I had a chance, and that was that was like just a, it's not a awesome thing to feel like when you just got caught basically by surprise with your pants down. But it's it's kind of a good feeling too because that's like that was an exciting game, and it was act that one. And by the way, the rest of the day three and three. So that basically I was at that point zero in one I go three and to the rest of the day three and three, I'm out Zack makes top cut four and two good for him, which I'm excited for him. But that one card, you know, winning early is huge in any competitive thing. You're gonna do getting those winds earliest big and I just didn't do it and it was hyperspace jump, but it was. It was really fun. I really enjoyed it. And yet it's maddening and frustrating when that happens to you, but that's as good destiny and one or two cards the other way. And it's it's with all of my games. Really. I think I was in it and I didn't. That was the only mill that I played that day. The deck played great against Kylo price vehicles do well against Kylo. You know, you're when you mix those collars. Man, it makes a lot of difference with him, doesn't it? And I think got out of five calls. He missed four of like, that's huge. That's huge. The deck did really well against a Thron. Thron smoke, and I lost unlike last turn to that, and the kid was great player to which was enjoyable, but a lot of fun experience. It was great time, and yeah, I just wanted to mention that that that I got punished losing the mill, but there's something you know, having all those Dyson the board. I mean, when when vehicles get cooking, it can be super fun. And, and by the way I love probe, that doesn't sound good, but I love that card probe, what a good car that is. So when you got all those dice out, you just focus on those days. I was really excited..
