Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez deliver moving inauguration performances

"Inauguration musical performances are tricky but lady gaga jennifer lopez and garth brooks. Did exactly what we needed them to do. By stephanie's jaric when lady gaga the first performer. At the inauguration of president joe biden and vice president kamala harris step toward the podium to sing everything about her that tropical red poof of skirt. The colossal golden dove perched on her shoulder that milk made from moma hairdo. Was celebratory announcement. Welcome to the modern age. Though the road ahead is rocky we no longer need to live and dread gaga living completely in the moment had arrived to point the way toward the future inauguration musical performances in their need to balance solemnity with jubilation are always tricky propositions but the biden harris performances from gaga. Lo and garth brooks performers from disparate backgrounds and different disciplines struck a note. Unlike any we've previously heard let's call it a sigh of relief building to a cheer of exaltation. even the cloud strewn blue of the washington sky seemed key to the moment and to this particular event taking place in a spot where just two weeks ago a bunch of clumsy if dangerous insurrectionist took a run at democracy and failed jennifer lopez was the centerpiece performer. But let's talk about her. First emerging all white chanel. She projected confidence civil woman who has worked her way to the top of her game. White everyone likes to note is one of the colors of the suffragettes. But it's also the color of working people in machine washable cotton and the color of luxury and dry clean only silken wall in this remarkable. Hi lo j. lo outfit replete with snowy gibault possibly a not to the garb of our founding fathers lopez. Saying a remarkable song. This land is your land. It was written in nineteen forty by. Woody guthrie allegedly and shabby hotel room just outside of times square. Not on the six but in close enough for lopez to sing this song a protest anthem but also an irrefutable declaration of belonging with so much conviction and boldness is to bring guthrie's intent and his dream full circle. This is in america. He couldn't have imagined. So terrible in some ways yet so radiant and others here is where woody and his work shirt meets a dazzling latina artists from the bronx who represents not just in terms of any monetary success but in her sheer awesomeness. Everything that an individual is free to strive toward in america. Lopez's version of the song wasn't a reclamation. You can't reclaim something that already belongs to you. And as she segue into the song we sometimes think of as our second national anthem. America the beautiful she reaffirmed that sense of ownership and pride and a breakout moment she shouted out in spanish words that translate into one nation under god indivisible with liberty and justice for all. But you didn't need to speak the language to know what she meant.

No AAPI Cabinet Secretary!? (With Madalene Mielke)

"Madly milk. Welcome back to the motto. Majority podcast today. Thanks so much. Appreciate having a having having you have me. Yeah absolutely well. We love our previous conversation back in episode. One one to talking about your career your life story from the very beginning you know your political career dating back to al gore's presidential campaign. I believe so. I encourage everybody to listen to episode one until after this episode to get to know your personal story a little bit better but today we are going to focus on. You know some current topics. Niger say before we get into that. You are the president and ceo of the organization. Asian pacific american institute for congressional studies or apec. Could you give us a quick overview of the mission and the goal of this organization. You're leading which. I think actually is a good background and foundation for other stuff. We're gonna talk about later on in this interview. Well absolutely so apex down at twenty. Six years ago by former secretary norm annetta when he was a member of congress. He founded it alongside on the congressional asian pacific american caucus k. pack which comprise of the api members of the us house and senate and so apex mission is to increase a representation at all levels of government From community service to elected office and have them participate at all levels of the electoral process. Gotcha so it's interesting that you mention norman. Mineta who i think is one of the first cabinet secretaries of asia-american designed in our country. I don't know the first night check on that. The first right okay. So yeah. I think he was transportation secretary. He was actually commerce. Secretary and president clinton's administration got it and then went to transportation under the bush administration. Gotcha gotcha he has this. Unique history of serving the first cabinet secretary serving both administrations both parties administrations. And really i think started in important. I guess trend of representation that is about to end with the incoming biden administration. And we're talking about as we are a few days before job and becomes president to be inaugurated. This will be the first time in close more than twenty years that they will not be in asia. American or pacific islander as a cabinet secretary in an administration whether it's democrat or republican for the first time. And you as the leader of a pack which is a nonprofit has spoken out quite a bit about a lack of representation. Could you share with us. What is your view of what is about to happen with this. Lack of representation in the incoming administration sure dodge. Obviously we have an incoming vice president. Who is a pi asian american. She south asian descent black vice president-elect kamla harris and also to cabinet level positions. They don't head up an executive department of which there are fifteen. And that's catherine tie. Vr and near attendant. You know the to cabinet. Level positions obviously have a lot of influence and i will just use the word sides the congressional hispanic caucus and the congressional black caucus as well as k. Pack when they sent a joint letter over a hundred and fifteen members of congress to the by the administration saying close to equal equal. And so that is that those were their words and so And so you know. I cabinet secretary heads of an executive department. And there's only fifteen of them and so when you think about that fifteen how's that diversity including asian americans. It doesn't because there isn't one of the fifteen a. I applaud the administration for their work in trying to expand diversity in having openly. Lgbtq individual leading agency And native american woman of half of the cabinet will be women so all those great things. So if you wanted to find diversity and not include asians in the fifteen than i need to ask you. What is your definition of diversity. Because we seem we've seen this play out and other places where the state of washington. I think they're department of education. Basically categorized asian americans as white so obviously a different definition of diversity.

The weirdest stuff at CES

"Joining us to talk about some of the most unusual stuff it's es this year is usa today tech columnist. Jennifer jolly a jennifer. Thanks for being here. Oh my gosh you guys. Thanks so much for having me. I love talking about weird tech. It's my favorite thing. All right so what was the weirdest thing you saw this slightly different. Cas where we all were covering it. Virtually yeah well we're just. It's it's going to be a tie between toews poop detective toilet. You heard that right and i mean please. Just start with the puns. Now i call it number two on my list healthier future based on what you leave behind get ready to be bulled over from the latest data dumb. I mean you can't you can't make this stuff up. What does it do. Tell me you you. You've you've peaked. You've peaked. My i can't think of a good pun around the top of my head so i'm going to give up. He's flushed with excitement about this. There you go there you go. Okay so todos newest ai. Smart commode is a sensor filled. Smart bowl aimed at detecting early signs of disease based on just imagine doing air quotes key outputs so it will analyze everything from how long you sit on the throne to The temperature of your skin as yours just sitting there to whether your stool contains enough fiber and then it will send you recommendations on how to improve your health via app on your smartphone showing gives you solid output. I caught up with you guys young so there we have it so that's got to be one of the weirdest last year. I talked about There was some gadget that analyzed your cats poop to let you know about your cats health so it was just a small leap to human health based on. You know looking into the future by what you leave behind. Yeah i'm gonna stop now it totally but you know it really it really make sense because you know how they've said. Some universities were analyzing waste on campus for covid spreading around so anyway so you mentioned it was a tie. So what's the other weird thing that you that at the top of your list. The bio breast milk. You guys remember last year when impossible pork basically got all the headlines plant based bacon that actually tasted really really good. Well this is again with the pun. The mother of all new high tech smart foods bio milk is a customized cultured breast milk. That is made from cells of a pregnant mother than cultivated in a lab to reproduce human milk. But it's personalized for that specific infant from that actual mother. So it's a way really. And i mean it sounds crazy but female Cell biologist female food scientists founded this company to create an alternative solution to formula to the packaged powdered formulas. We've been using forever because three out of four moms. Have some reason they have to stop breastfeeding before the recommended. Six months so it could be work. It could be health related. It's stressful any nursing. Mom knows it is one of the hardest jobs you will ever do. Toss in pandemic and working from home in teaching your kids. I mean it's really really hard in the best of times so that is just something i can't i couldn't believe it when i heard about it but i'm excited to see it. Come hopefully this year. So let's get to some of the really cool stuff that happened in the s one of the things that i've heard i'd heard about were these bionic contact lenses i think. Can you describe them. They sound really cool. Yeah it's called mojo vision. It's an a. Are embedded contact lens. That is as close to a bionic accessory as i could ever imagine. There's a teeny tiny display. It's half a millimeter in diameter. That's about the same size as a grain of sand that's actually embedded within the contact lends itself and then it projects images and information really subtly. You really take your attention away from what you're looking at but it projects that into your peripheral vision as you either. Walk down the street or cycle up a hill or even look up into the night sky. It's absolutely mind blowing at this. Was the winner of css last gadget standing. And that's an event that i have emceed for the past several years including this year i had not seen not mojo lens until video that the company played during the event and i had to pick my job up off the desk. I just cannot believe this kind of futuristic far out technology is actually here and the company told me they're going to launch this For people who are visually impaired. I and follow up with a consumer model. They have to go through all kinds of of fda and f. like all kinds of regulations because it is a contact lens. I e a medical device but they are looking at two three years out with these. Maybe less sounds like something. I am i on medically go to the goes. Terminator two were you. Were you got to see through the terminator's eyes and stuff was coming up on the side and you're like wow that if that could happen in the future yeah not only could is will. We've seen it. We also saw the music's glasses that do something very similar. But they're a pair of glasses so the difference is a contact lens and a pair of futuristic super cool smart glasses nice beyond products. Were there any trends or big takeaway. She took from the show this year. Jennifer there was a lot this year. You guys have already talked about this. A lotta pandemic tech germ killer. Everything's from target as new anti microbial backpack to special lights. I saw ub techs. Giant robot can rule through rooms shooting off giant rays of uvc. Light to sterilize a room so huge huge emphasis on clean tech mask tech. You guys wrote about the airpods mask. I have that with me where you know. There's a little disc on the front of it that connects with your smartphone and can give you all kinds of information about the air that you're breathing. How much your breathing. So that was a really really big trend and then also just comfort more comfort and this big buzzword this year delight at home figuring out ways to bring basically your whole entire world inside the walls of your home or even your backyard and have it be a lot better to hang out. There in the future will

"With everybody. How god kind of transition do you. How did it start that you went from. I mean obviously. I think people can. They can understand even relate to going from being a stay at home mom and then as they grew you worked into a career but then how do you take this career that you worked hard to become a teacher and now you literally transition into health and wellness kind of walk us through that journey in kind of what god was. What was he planting seeds along the way or did it happen. Suddenly i would love to hear that. It was a very gradual thing again. I grew up Which you know in southern california. It's the weather's great. People eat quite differently than they do. In the mid west gives me in the midwest and my husband and my kids. And i had gone to visit family in north carolina for christmas and this was still back in the day where you took pictures and you develop them and you and my sister sent me a picture and i looked at of course. I glanced at everyone else. And then i did what most of us do. I narrowed in on myself. And i thought oh my goodness what have i done and i was probably at that time. A good thirty to forty pounds heavier and it was like how did that happen and again the picture a picture doesn't lie and that's when you notice that and about that time i think i was starting to ease into menopause and then it wasn't but a couple years that my oldest daughter decided to go back out to california to san diego to college and little by little she'd come home each semester. Erin summer and say. I'm not eating this anymore. We don't eat that and then it was like okay. Whatever and i it was milk and then it was pork and then it was you know she was suddenly paying more attention to the shampoos and the ingredients in them so if anything my daughter without even realising it starting to see her be more aware of what she put in her body as well as on our body made me start to think again. You're i was starting. Menopause feeling tired extra way. No energy sleep and so really. It was a combination of all of those things that i realized i needed to go back to the basics cooking meals taking walks doing more things and started to see my health improve and then it seems like you know friends would make comments or ask questions and so i became sort of the go to a little bit for people. How do i do this or what are you eating. That looks really good and out. That was it and it was something that i loved talking about. I love learning about. And so i think just was a natural progression and i love teaching. I like talking to people making connections so it just was a natural fit so then i signed up or a year long a certification program to be a health coach. That's how it all started. It's awesome and i think that It's a really beautiful picture of how It's kind of full circle. I feel like you know we. We don't not necessarily. I mean some families. Just it's cultural the way that they eat and And so it's even harder to break those habits but but for some people they started off kind of you know everything was even homegrown for some people and then you just get busy and you get in that phase of life and then it then it just becomes a habit of convenience until something happens. It's interesting because i feel like people take their health for granted until their health is not health anymore

Walmart will test grocery deliveries to a smart cooler on customers' doorsteps

"That I really like. And e think this is going to lead to further adoption of grocery deliveries they're going to and they're doing this just in Arkansas is this test But they're gonna put smart coolers on customers doorsteps so that you know when they deliver your produce and your milk and things like that. It's not sitting out in the hot sun. I like this idea, and it shows and demonstrates that perhaps grocery delivery has legs. Yeah, I think it's something that's interesting there. You know, doing this. They're testing it just in their hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas to begin with, So it's It's gonna be a small pilot program that they are starting here, but It's something that I do think it is interesting to deal with some of the problems that you have with grocery delivery of, namely Hey, let's say that you had specified a certain time that you wanted things delivered in they don't come there. If you're sitting there, and you know the summer anywhere in the United States, and you got milk sitting out for an hour to in the hot summer sun That's not a very good thing. So you know this is an interesting little pilot program that they're starting up. I don't know if this becomes, you know the standard necessarily, but Think for customers that are, you know, post pandemic gonna be heavy users of grocery delivery. This is something that can put some of those fears about spoiled food to rest. If you're using delivery, as opposed to go into the store and picking up on your own, do you guys remember, Like two years ago, we covered this on the show where Wal Mart was actually looking into Having their delivery drivers have access to your fridge so they would do with some sort of a smart lock, and I hated that. And I think that's why these smart coolers. Now, the next step because nobody wanted somebody walking through their house, even if it was on camera. Yeah, No, I just I'm curious that it'll be very interesting to see there's been, you know, Talk about zoom technology and face mask. Do you think about all the things that have happened? As a result of covert and grocery delivery was a big one, right? Does that continue and take a lot of investors are trying to figure that out as well. Does that trend continue? Post Cove it when we get this thing under control, I don't know the answer. Could tell you anecdotally and I'm just talking

WSJ's Personal Tech Team Makes Their 2021 Predictions

"Okay. So we mentioned all that pandemic tack what has staying power. What's gonna stick around. I think good video calling stays or at least gets better and twenty twenty one. I've written a lot this year. About how crappy webcams are on laptops. And i think we will see improvements in two thousand twenty one at least on the built in hardware on laptops and computers. I think idea that we We we will return to something and probably start to have more in person meetings again. But i do not think the concept of video calling or even just taking video calls instead of regular phone calls is to go away. I think grocery delivery stays. I think a lot more people are willing to pay the four or five dollars extra for milk in order to save our off of shopping parking dealing with the woman number of choices in the in the grocery store and further to that i think that i think a lot of the e commerce days so it's easy if you're younger person i think like who wasn't using amazon but when you look at the numbers the option of especially for older folks has been really astonishing gets in certain segments from lack thirty percent of people above the sixty five using certain types of a delivery for various homegoods to seventy five percent. And we've talked about the mask bone before. Does that stick around do products like that. Stick around. I think masks are going to stay. I think we are going to see a big transition especially in cities to people wearing masks so things like mask phone where you can take a phone call and actually have the microphone inside the mask and sound a little bit better. Might be something that stays. I still think that's a pretty niche product. I don't think everyone's running out to buy a fifty dollar mask tech solutions that help you. Sanitizer disinfect your products. Or your home. The things around your home or even your gadgets like your phone those will also continue to be popular. We expect to see a couple of those at the consumer electronics. Show coming up in january of already. Gotten a number of pitches about that kind of tax. So i think that in twenty twenty one is people start to leave their homes more that that type of tech or that kind of solution will will be needed and of course one thing that's been on the rise this year is streaming services and at home entertainment options. Do you are on the show last year and talk about the explosion of new services coming on the scene and now they're all here and the whole cost at least a few bucks and i don't know about you guys but i'm definitely not willing to pay for all of them so what happens in the next year or how does this shakeout the yes you. People will narrow down their subscriptions. But i think these are going to get even more expensive and twenty twenty one. I think subscriptions as a whole. We're gonna see more price hikes. The big model around subscriptions is recurring revenue. So you are already continuing to pay company. Every month for whatever service they provide but then they start adding features in and so then they want you to pay more for them and we're starting to see that Whether it was netflix which seems to raise their prices. Every two weeks We've seen it around. Google starting to charge for their photos. Solution only gonna continue

New US dietary guidelines: No candy, cake for kids under 2

"Federal government has new advice about what we should eat and drink it. Released new dietary guidelines as. It does every five years based on input from a scientific advisory committee this year. One of the biggest changes has to do with kids. in fact it's the first ever government dietary guidelines for infants and toddlers and it now recommends feeding only breast milk for at least six months and the guidelines also recommend children under two years old. Do not have any added sugars at all. That means no candy cake or ice cream for everyone else. The guidelines do stop short of two key suggestions that the advisory panel had made scientists had recommended. All americans should cut back on added sugars saying they should only make up six percent of the food we eat rather than the currently recommended ten percent they also suggested men cut their alcohol intake to wondering per day. Max right now. The recommendation is to but those suggestions were rejected the us department of agriculture and the health and human services department felt there wasn't enough science to back up the changes and they're the ones to make the final

ANALYSIS: So You Wanna Be New York City Mayor, Huh?

"How Do you see? Large democratic mayor of field shaping up in general. So far, it is kind of overwhelming for people to get their minds around such a long list. I said We were gonna go down through the list, and this isn't even gonna be Complete list. We've begun having the candidates on the show already, and I keep saying to the listeners this June primary is going to come up on people faster than you realize. But my goodness the field is so crowded. With Eric Adams in Scott Stringer and Maya Wiley and Shaun Donovan and Kathryn Garcia and Ray Maguire and Carlos Man, Chaka and Diane Diane. Morale is and Laurie sudden. And that's an incomplete list. And now we're here. Max Rose and Andrew Gang may both be getting in are their lanes in this race like we used to say in the presidential primary, the conservative rain laying the progressive lane or how can a voter who isn't a political science professor like you begin to sort this out for themselves? Right. I mean, in some ways, it's both overwhelming and underwhelming at the same time. I mean, sadly, so many voters can't really fully focus Brian on local elections, just Jack because we haven't gotten past January, 20th And especially for voters of color, Knowing what the president has has said the types of people he supported his members of his own party, essentially trying to actively create a coup within American democracy. It's a very unsettling political moment, and a lot of folks can't really focus. Fully on a local election until there is a peaceful transition of power, which quite honestly is not guaranteed at this moment. And so once we get past January 20th it's a 2 p.m.. Then I think that there's a sigh of relief when we can start looking at. Okay. Well, who are who are the millionaires? Who were, you know, sort of waking up in the morning, saying I should be a leader? That's one bucket. Who were the folks who were currently unemployed and need a job. So hey, I should run for mayor too. That's another bucket. Who were the progressive folks who have interesting ideas for New York in some sort of some sort of managerial experience, but no previous electoral experience. That's another bucket. Then you have sort of the you know the politicians who have been elected to office once or quite a few times, and they want to expand that sort of leadership style. In a city that might be looking for something totally different. And so we have minimum four buckets. Obviously, there's descriptive politics. Some people think it's far time that New York City has female leadership. Some people want to make sure that there's leadership of color, whether it's another black mayor, Post Dinkins or if we should have someone from the Latin next community, and so there's lots of different angles. I think right now because it's so crowded. It's hard to Even hear what people actually saying. But also that's on the candidates, because because of rank choice voting, many people are reticent to attack their opponents. They're reticent to say any big, bold ideas. It's kind of a milk toast election as a as of now, that's not garnering any attention. From the vast majority of New Yorkers. And we know that municipal elections in New York City have have abysmal, embarrassingly low turnout for someone who will not only be the leader of New York but political figure on a national even international scale. Can I just? Yeah, e You want to say something really quickly about Henry's point about 1993 moving forward with crime. I think we need to back up just four more years and think about the Dinkins years and what Mayor Dinkins was was successful and trying to re imagine the police department in a more community policing way, and we have to be honest about the amount of money we pay out as citizens. For bad behavior of the NYPD and how bad officers are continuously protected on considered, I would say, terrorized particular communities, and the fiscal implications of that bad behavior, you know, goes beyond just training. It is a fundamental re imagining that mayoral candidates must talk about because there's something going on that Justin The top brass leadership. But there's some sort of corrosion throughout particular departments in the city that needs to be rooted out in a real substantive way that we just have never seen before. Well,

Kids, You Gotta Love 'Em: Recognizing What Is Really Important

"What is what is really important. And those thoughts go through my mind. What's really important. And i learned this through my kids a lot. God shows me to my children about a year later. They were in bed one night. My boys shared a room and we live downstairs and their room was upstairs in the middle of the night three in the morning i hear thought he was sick. I run up the stairs. Walk in his standing on his bed standing on his bed. Like a superhero. That i said do what are you doing. Data like he'd been rehearsing this or some three in the morning. Daiei chocolate mill now nine nine time and he looked at me like maybe he didn't hear this right. I'm standing up. Should get many drops to his knees daddy. Mileage now dude. It's night night time you've got to go to bed. And he looks at me and the look on his face is like what part of this do you not get. I'm saying all the right earns and a lame down. He's like daddy was dude. Did you all the chocolate milk you want in the morning but right now it's nighttime and he put his head on the pillow and he turned up chocolate milk. I said nobody it's nighttime. And he rolled over with okay to add a line and he went to sleep. And as i walked down the steps it was one of those moments now. God has never spoken to me. Leave Out Porridge for Belligerent Elves on Christmas Eve

"More trip to europe before christmas to explore some interesting traditions. This time in denmark as kids in america may be getting ready to leave out cookies for santa on friday and don't worry after his scientifically dubious assertions about old saint nick having magical immunity to covid nineteen. Dr fauci has since clarified that. He took a trip to the north pole to vaccinate santa claus himself. Anyways wall here in the us. It's cookies for santa. in denmark. Children leave out porridge for mischievous lives as bribe to make sure they behave the elves. Not the kids. The idea of needing to keep these elms or nisa. Happy goes back to at least the middle ages when farmers explained various bad luck and the hardships of a long winter on the nisa farm. If you kept the nissan happy your livestock would survive the winter in all else would go. Well if you disrespected or upset the nida you may find horrors in the morning like your cow. Having dropped dead to stay on your nieces good side families began offering him a bowl of porridge. On christmas eve. Poor inge was a common staple at the time but the one for the nissan would be special made of rice instead of oats or barley boiled in milk and topped with butter. atlas obscure shares. Learn To Listen To Yourself by Krista O'Reilly-Davi-Digui

"Learn to listen to yourself by krista o'reilly davig magee of a life in progress dot ca one of the greatest gifts. Anyone can offer me is to make me feel truly heard like they care what i have to say and how i feel no judgment are trying to fix me the gift of a safe space to hash things out and express what is on my mind and heart so that i can heal and gain clarity and have the courage to move forward. I shared how this might have helped me when as a teen i wanted to die. I don't need you to tell me what to do. I usually already know. But when you hear me i feel loved. I released shame. And i gained courage to take yet another stab into who and how i choose to be in the world. But here's another truth. We turn a coaches and counselors sisters and girlfriends to be heard. Do we offer ourselves the same precious gift do we practice hearing and honoring ourselves first offering our own person. The grace and compassion that we seek from others. Do we have the courage to look inward and learn to listen to what our minds bodies and spirits are telling us. This needs to be the starting place. We need to learn to listen to ourselves. We read every new book. That comes out travel to conferences. Jump at the chance to hear that guest speaker. We constantly gathering information. Jump on board with the new fad eagerly. Try out a new pill or the new program hoping that we will find the answer. We seek outside of ourselves. Talking with our best friends offering are well thought out. Opinions on social media and monthly meet ups with a life coach also repurpose but becoming more clearly ourselves figuring out who we want to be what we need identified a real passion or gifts we wanna bring to the world putting our finger on the place of unrest the root of our disease these all come as we learned to listen to ourselves. We so desperately wanna be heard so let us practice hearing ourselves with practice. We become better attuned to what our minds bodies and spirits are speaking quicker to trust a still small voice. More confident that we already know what it is. We need or that. The answer will come and we have only two still ourselves and listen. We can practice listening in myriad ways but today i want to offer some questions we might use as we practice pause go inward and learn to listen number one. At the end of the day we can take a few calming breasts and simply asked. How did my day go today. We might take note of three things. We agreeable for two things. We did well today. One thing we would do differently next time this way we can be into live more mindfully number two when strong emotions bubble up. We can get a loan for a minute and ask. What am i feeling right now. Spilled milk is probably not. The real issue is more likely that there is a deeper root of fear or overwhelm lurking beneath the surface. We can create space for tears. If need be pleased create space. Tears remind ourselves that our feelings are not bad not rage nor fear. Anger sadness grief loneliness pleasure or delight and pay attention to where that emotion lives in our body and our tents shoulders are temples are clenched fists or jaw. That throbbing pain in our legs will begin to see more clearly. The connection between our feelings and our physical symptoms number three if a strong urge to binge arises. Whether on netflix sleep food or alcohol we can notice pause and listen in after asking. What do they truly need right now. We might notice that we are physically or emotionally. Hungary incredibly tired afraid or excited when we do go ahead and eat or take some downtime. We can check in and ask is truly nourishing me as a way of getting clear on what it is that actually makes us feel well fed rested so that we begin to live more intentionally rather than on autopilot number four before pressing by now or signing up for that course or saying yes to one more engagement we can breathe and pause perhaps. Take a twenty four hour pause and ask. Will this truly serve me right now. We consider if it aligns with our current financial or life goals marvin honors the season. We are in. We might ask if we even truly like need have room for this new item food or experience or if we are simply afraid of missing out acting on impulse numbing or following the crowd and little by little we will begin to live more authentically

What Are People Searching For Online?

"Williams whether the year's biggest stories, covert 19 of the 2020 presidential election were among the top search trends. 2020 has been a year like no other and you are right that current virus is in the top. Searches for the year, as is election results and other news related information. We know that people come to Google to stay up to date on the latest, so not super surprising, but we have seen some fun trends emerge as well. Things like recipes for how to make a Doubletree cookies, which had to Google it, but it looks like it's those companies that they give you on. Ah, upon check in at Doubletree, so people have been craving those from home. I think that is hilarious. What other kinds of fun things they're people searching for. I know there's been a lot of do it yourself stuff going on out there. Absolutely. The beauty tips have been something that caught my eye. A lot of how to cut men's hair at home. How to dye my hair, a home a swell as plopping, which is a technique where you put your wet hair up in a towel, and it provides you loose curls. So people really getting creative this year also found it interesting that in the how to make category of course we saw Hansen a Tizer and face masks coming in at one and two, but third was whipped coffee. Which I'm not sure if you've tried it, but it's truly delicious. It's where you whipped together instant coffee and sugar and water and pour it on top of hot or cold milk. So just underneath some coronavirus search terms, we did see things for fun recipes and things like that. Wow. What was the number one search? I'm curious. The number one search was for election results, so lots of people coming to Google to follow that very closely on then. That was followed by Corona virus of the top 10 searches this year, about half for either election, or Corona virus related. What precautions did Google take to make sure that what people were searching for was accurate and not misinformation, since there's well, frankly, so much drama out there about both the virus and the elections. We have safeguards in place to make sure that we're offering up authoritative information. So for the election, for instance, we partnered with the AP to make sure that we were actually just reporting out on the outcomes and results that they had on hand as well as for the coronavirus for searches relating to that we do depend on international and local health experts to surface authoritative information, because, as you mentioned misinformation has been a huge issue, and it's something we're very sense. About Okay back to fun. What was a search that most surprised do this year. Most surprising for me was in fact that Shakira was not in one, not two. But three of our top trending search categories. I think you might remember way back when we did, in fact, have a Super Bowl this year, and Shakira and Jennifer Lopez absolutely killed it. So I'm thinking that's maybe why we saw a spike in interest in secure this year, but I was very happy to see it as a big fan of her. Google's Catherine Williams. That's it

"There was a story that started to break yesterday about a mystery illness in India. Tanya what's the latest on this story? Good morning. Well, it turns out about 500 people a little more than 500 people have been hospitalized in southern India this month, like it is just recently cropped up in the last few days. It's this mysterious illness. These people suddenly lose consciousness. They have seizures. Um some of them have temporary loss of memory, muscle pain in their next or their backs. Um, it's just been just one of those things that is just flummoxed these these folks, because, you know, now they're testing everything to find out where These toxins are coming from one of the district officials said. It was a case of acute intoxication of toxins. And when we're talking about toxins, the things they found in the blood samples were like lead and nickel. But they don't know how they got there. One of them was also normally found in pesticides. That wasn't more some of the water samples. But they tested. Um thankfully did a number of new patients seems to be going down, which is a good good time. But they say this is not related to the coronavirus. This is just some strange mystery illness that's affected. Hundreds of people in a really short period time to nearly all of the same region are all in the same town. I think that I'll be in the in the in the city of allure Ooh, which is in the southeastern coast of India, which is, you know again, you know they're they're pandemic is, you know it would be quite a virus is still raging there as well. It's not like things were, you know, under control or whatever it's it's still surging there from what we understand, and this is just kind of added to it. You know that This doesn't sound like Coronavirus type of illness. That sounds like something's in the water. You know what I mean? Yeah, And that's where the things they're investigating that get teams from the World Health organization there. They've got molecular biologist virologist on the ground there all testing the water samples. They're testing the milk and the vegetables and the fish and the deal, right? Tell me One report we saw was and I guess if we're looking for good news is that many of those folks have left the hospital. So was his. Was there a treatment that was effective and where these short term Symptoms that they were dealing with. It appears to be short term. They are a monitoring the people who have recovered they're still keeping research with them. Some of those have reported seizures even after they were after they were out of the hospital. They are still looking at new patients to see if they've got any different symptoms. They set up about men 80 medical camps in that area. T tech new patients If other people come down with some of these, you know symptoms that are just like kind of out of the blue and really have have puzzled these focus. Like just for clarification. "Why is that such common question. What is that breakfast question. i would have for breakfast. Had part ahead Sarah millet porridge with spice were Cattleman cinnamon brown sugar and Yeah and but the. The partridge flowers made from millet mood for millet. Which gives it and then they and then they sour it somehow so it's like sour millet porridge and then i like to put coconut milk and spice in that sounds like porridge is usually this just bland. That's what it's supposed to be. Sounds like you're going to opposite direction. Gosh no. I discovered porridge of been discovering parche. All my life. I think it's a process of continual rediscovery honestly like my grandmother's purchase. The best part in the whole world was a best best best best best partridge and then i lived in mombasa for awhile in the night i tasted the part in mombasa and that was the best and i started feeling guilty about liking another party. More than my grandmother's really. Did you have a chance. you're still with us. I'm sorry you can even taste it. You couldn't even get her on board. You can do and also a little bit like mombasa. You're still living out in mombasa or you're you're here full-time based was what was that dalliance with the coast. I've always wanted to live at the coast. Feel like the coast is just a super magical wonderful. Can't i can't even explain mombasa's just it's beautiful. It's one of my. It's like going to the coast dismal. The ken coast is my happy place. All is has been in the indian ocean and the beaches and the coast on on the south coast of the northern. The most beautiful beaches anywhere. I've ever seen Right let's go. Yeah we're gonna so we have mambas where it's at. This deanne is where. It's at. So i just i try and spend as much time as possible so for a while. I thought i could live there. I was just like you know. I can live anywhere. Move bats while you can live anywhere. I mean you can in theory but you but but you can't is super small. It's like It's it was small. It was small for what i needed to do. So i was constantly like jumping on like an extra flight to just to get out of mombassa into opportunity into life and work. Yeah i'm going to pull a thomas friedman on your i i was talking to my cabdriver right from us saying the same thing everybody. He grew up with those living in nairobi. Now it's nice and there's no jobs. But that's i mean. La maybe is an exception. I don't know like a all of the people. There are trying to make it not nice but they. You know beautiful places. Great beach never have good jobs. There's never enough you're to go back to some godforsaken place like new york to get your work done okay. So attlee whenever people say where you from like visiting la and people say where he from. Mo's like the east coast the true your coaster. No because no because yeah kenya's the other east coast and you from the great lakes. That work no i was. I don't know isn't this Right so you're an east coaster kenya being on the east coast in but not like a proper east coast would still be mombassa again. The default how far back to your born raised in nairobi. Yep But then became hopping on a flight to get into life you. You hopped out pretty young young university even before that the last two years of high school i did them in the uk was there. Like that's when. I realized i was black. Hard thing to figure out here. I didn't know i didn't know it. I am like now i hadn't heard of it. I wasn't having race conversations with my parents. I'm having race conversations with my children now I just it was just it. Wasn't it wasn't a thing. Tribe was a thing. And we're trying to get over that and you know but race wasn't a thing i remember i had a white auntie and jews lake. You know like different. It's just like the odd person out. Wow you know. That's just because she was different.

Davey Crocket and The Frozen Sun

"Lived a man named davy crockett. If you've heard of old navy it's probably for his final stand at the alamo or more likely for his raccoon skin cap. The cap was made of thick raccoon for for keeping warm during the harsh western winters. And it had the bushy tail hanging down the back. Davy crockett was more than the alamo and a cap though he was an adventurer one of the brave people who saw the endless frontier and waited in a man at his favorite swimming hole even during the coldest winters rarely would he be sitting peacefully indoors or relaxing. He spent his days out in nature sleeping in the mountains and bathing in the rivers. Other folks thought davy. Crockett might just be a little crazy but if so they were lucky to have him because it was on one particularly cold morning that davy. Crockett saved the world. He woke with the sun as he always did. In those days it was deep winter in the mountains. Where even though the donning son was bright. It didn't seem to offer any warmth at all. Icy wind howled like a banshee and even the animals had the good sense to be hibernating. What a beautiful morning davies said to himself he tried to rise up out of his bedroll but it was so covered in ice. He was stuck fast with a little work. He managed to get an arm free and then he was able to use a hammer and chisel to get the rest of the way out. It's cold one. No doubt he said but it'll get warmer. When the son gets a meyde higher. He tried to get a fire going to make breakfast but all his would was frozen solid even the coals from the night before were nothing but snowballs davey tried to spit in disappointment but it froze halfway to the ground and shattered on an icy stone. Well ours coffee today. I guess he said he makes some coffee grounds into some snow and eight. It like a snow cone. It wasn't tasty but it seemed to help wake him up a little. Where's the darn sun. He said looking at the horizon with a start of shock. He saw that. The sun hadn't risen any higher. It was still stuck on the horizon like tongue on an ice cube and it was starting to look more blue than yellow. What in our nation is going on with that davey climbed up a nearby mountain peak to get a better view. Every step was so icy. Put his hand to his coon skin. Cap to shield. His eyes peered at the horizon. Oh lord no the frontiers mun was brave and he thought he'd seen it all in his adventures. But this was something new and something awful. It was so cold that the sun itself had frozen on the horizon. He could see it stuck between two peaks of ice sunbeam's frozen in their tracks like icicles. Well this is no good at all davies said. He looked in the other direction and saw a little town. At the base of the mountain. The buildings were all coated in a fine layer of ice. Like a frosted cake. The pastors were like sheets of glass. And even the smoke from chimneys was frozen in place. Well darn davy. Crockett said to himself from high up on the mountain peak. Either i'm gonna fix this mess or we gotta get the cows so my skates he thought about cows skating for a minute and decided that they wouldn't like it that much better. He just fixed the problem before all the milk got frozen into ice cream. Of course most people may have been at a loss on how to fix a frozen sun but davy. Crockett wasn't like most people. He didn't wait around thinking or planning or any of that now. He just pointed himself at the frozen sun and started walking.

"The question is do you have a stand mixer with the wisc attachment? Oh, yeah. I definitely do. Well, using the west for now on you should be. Yeah. That was an easy. We have long. I'm glad help. Sure. Pleasure. Thanks for calling. Thank you very much. Welcome to milk street. Who's calling all my name is Erica. Hi erica. Where are you calling from county pencil? Vania help you. I had a question about a vegetable Gretz hand that I made it was one of the GRA towns where several different symbols were arranged very pretty in concentric circle. And it looked really beautiful, but the milk and the cheese and the butter when I started get separated. So it was kind of watery with the milk solids floating around in their problem. We have experienced many times a few questions are using russets for potato. She said just root vegetables. We're there potatoes in there. Good question. I did include two breath hoping that the starts might help. But it was butternut squash breath, it a sweet potato and some of the larger size Parsons, and what kind of dairy? Did you have an I had whole mill heavy cream and butter that I simmer on a sauce pan. Just to bring it up to win the cold proportion of milk. Too heavy cream three cups. Whole milk at one Cup heavy cream cheese in it keys on top, Greer, and peck arena. I would get rid of the milk or use much less milk. The lower the fat of the dairy in a criterion. Dish the more likely you'll have separation. Okay. The other way to do. It is use a chicken or beef stock or vegetable stock with some heavy cream. That would also probably help cheese peck arenas in age cheese. And is not going to melt, particularly well, so the fresher the cheese the better melts. But I would think that it's really a question of the milk. There's three parts milked one part heavy cream in that maybe reverse at one part milk to three parts heavy cream or half-and-half. But the other thing is since you've got a preponderance of root vegetables that are low in starch, including sweet potatoes. They don't have the same kind of starch that was the other issue there too. Because they give off let them think about it. So I'm not saying you should get rid of. The root vegetables. I agree with Chris. I would up the cream and down the milk or do have cream half saved chicken broth vegetable broth suit. You know, if you wanna use mill fine, but you would should almost make Basham l like thicken it because if you going to be my follow up, you could do that if you wanna use meal make it turn it into a cream sauce. I do I would do butter flour. And then I'd chicken stock and use that as the base that would be great difference between Avella Tae and a bestseller cream sauces stock versus milk. So whatever you're looking for. They're looking for the indulgent holiday variety. We'll get the milk out there, man male. Lose that milk. That would be the opposite to the advertising, which has got milk. Lose the milk. Listen cream cream? Yeah. There you go. I think we get y'all yet. I think you're good to go. Yeah. Absolutely. Thank you. Thanks erica. Thank you. This is most your radio if you have a cooking question, please give us a ring..

"There was a Dublin hospital that had ninety nine point, six percent, infant mortality rates. Yeah. I mean, what was called artificial feeding feeding children. Animal milk was not a widespread thing until the eighteenth century in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. It caused huge infant mortality rates just to lots of children, especially in cities and given the odds. I mean in New York City more than half the people who died were under five years old and most of that was from milk. So given that that was happening, isn't it extraordinary that people still went on giving kids milk because of this belief that you have to give children milk? Well, yes. And they also you said in your book that the prevailing theory about feeding children. Animal milk with they'd end up growing up stupid because well. I mean, I just thought it was interesting. There is this belief that a baby took on the characteristic of its milk source. So if you had a wet nurse who had a terrible temper, you'd get a bad temper child. If that child goat milk, the kid would be very sure footed. So in different places in the world use different water, buffaloes Italy, camels mayors, milk. How about Koumas down my God? Yeah. "Yeah all right well these are all great ideas thank you chris thanks for going keel okay welcome welcome to milk street who's on the line this is sandy crystal hi where are you calling from new hampshire so how can we help you today well we've been making waffles i held for many years usually we use milk is the liquid the now we switched almond milk and the problem is when we use them in milk the waffles don't turn golden brown they look very own appetizing and they're not chris the original recipe we use does call for some sugar in it but i don't know what else to potentially change to make them brown again in the department awful little taste is good not crisp one thing you might try and we did this with a chocolate chip cookie recipe is we toasted the flour and a skillet for four or five minutes over like medium heat stirring it frequently we also add a little bit of rye flour places somebody'll purpose maybe because it's so dark it's dark and has a lot of flavors so three parts all purpose to one part ri toasted in a skillet for a few minutes the other thing you could do is grind up some nuts like cons like a quarter cup and add add meal that nut meal to the mixture which will add color and also flavor and make sure you you add sugar because the sugar is what's going to help it brown.
