Warmest. Person on the planet like he is such a sweetheart, right? Very Real Guy I've known him forever had known from day one in show business with both of us. So I do like them, I like them a lot. He's very real. and. He has a lot. You know he he. Got Very emotional at one point. He has a lot of love for the place right? Do I you know and. And I I. Like those a lot. Liked. You know there was a lot. It didn't like you know a few people came in and it just blew me away with their kind of. You know kind of cynicism and I wasn't looking for that. That's not what I wanted to do. You know and Can you name any name? Any of those people Hitler and You know it doesn't matter because I didn't make the DOT. I didn't put him in jail. They were just there were sort of cynical or their attitude was poor. What what was it? They just wanted to flame throw you know and snow. Horse Yeah you know and and. And you know they were kind of. The way the world turned out you know and I wasn't looking to do. As you can see if you ever see it a hallmark thing because it's not all I. showed a lot of that the cracks and crevices, but by the same token I wasn't I was. Trying to talk about. Why this white comedians need a home Why comedians even care about a place. What you know they're all you know. Why why does comedians such a solo job? Why? Why do they need a place that they gravitate to and show that how what it was about this place? became. The spot that you want to kind of have your name on the wall you know. "Five parter episode four airs this Sunday Ten PM on showtime and can watch them on demand at show. Dot Com is well never seen before footage and all the big names good to see him. I. See you thanks for having me on the program, my my pleasure What is the what's going on at the comedy store right now and? Are they gonNA be able to sort of stay stay afloat during this pandemic? No right now it's. E Ebola testing center, Zuhdi basically. It's it's No it's shutdown. No. Actually they do have. The front bar is open on the patio. As you know, they have a great patio body the although Sunday night. They had the back patio opened the show. They're actually showing the show in the back. You can watch it on a big screen, but for some reason, the people the great people of California I don't think that live entertainment is an essential business in live comedy central business, which they're dead wrong and. They even set up a way that they could. Have, tables and chairs, chairs and everything outside and. They shut them down after about two days. It was a big success people came. Sold that I guess both nights and they just the county shut them down. You know. But so now it's just some nights I. Think they actually do some shows through the front window and people in the bar can look up and see you and hear you the guy, the comics you know. But it's It's a sad state of affairs. God. I saw story the other night where somebody got busted I. Think it was in New York, because they were cafe kind of store rope owner and they left their front door open is that left the fucking door open and somebody from the city came in to gamma summons. I gotTa tell you people. I don't want to sound like slippery slope guy but we're we are crossing some. We're crossing some bridge here that we are GONNA. Wish we never fucking crossed. We are crossing a bridge where we are leading fucking full retards like Gavin, newsom and that total fucking Posey Garcetti and all these other fucking pencil pushing Dick's run our fucking lives and we're going Willy Nilly along we're acting like it's the right thing to do. No, we're good citizens. No, you done real good thing. Don't wish me out in the Cornfield Gavin newsom the sad part. It's not what fucking Gavin newsom doing it's what all the fucking sheep are doing behind him we should be. Yes. I live in Santa Monica the other night I'm sitting on my front porch. In this guy walk on not on my side. Astute. On the sidewalk weapon that fireside watched by with mask on you watch by in a few minutes later he comes back and he goes. You need to put a mascot. And I win I'm smoking a cigar. And I'm on my front. Porch. And took you ten minutes to figure out if you needed to combat get moving. But it was like. Wow this is what we've come to you know. I'm. If you'RE GONNA Hassle so an outdoors for not wearing a mask go ahead and pull your mask down put a fucking pistol in your mouth and blow your fucking retarded at please in the name of society if you're older than twenty five and you do that, please eat a fucking bullet you fucking assholes this this is we're turning to shit. It's insane that the government is is going into going into guys little dagoes. Now, telling them you're going to get a summons for not for leaving your front door open nobody should pay any of those nobody should fuck write a check do anything all but you've been on stage right lesson I saw you you're heading to. Texas. I think somewhere to do some show. I've Been Texas three times I've been to Nashville two times I've been to Arizona. I've been Salt Lake City, and that's that's Harlow in Monte Carlo. That's right. That's just but I haven't been to me my. I've done. Gigs I've flown south. West more than ever have. I've done everything I. It doesn't matter me but okay let's let's focus on on you and the DOC. You got some of the biggest names out there in this. I can't believe their has there never been a documentary on the comedy store because it seems like such a great subject. I think there's been specials on the comedy store. I think there was like A. True Hollywood, thing on the comedy store I don't think I. Mean I spent two years working on this thing. You know this is a deep dive on it. I think Showtime, let me do this right. You know I think. You Know I. Think this is the first one with this kind of. Depth to it or whatever but. I don't you know I don't think on this level. It's been done because it's a great story. It is fifty years forty, forty, eight years. The comedy store has been around and you know it had acute talk years business wise. But it's really It's really Kinda. Mecca for COMEDIANS. You know it's it's really interesting how it's. The center of the world of STANDUP. What were some of the lean years? What were some of the off years for the comedy store? I would say two thousand to two, thousand, ten, nine, summarily there. Those I mean they weren't all what? that. Those were that was the bad decade. Really. I wouldn't. I wouldn't have thought that but I wouldn't have known what era to pick. Why was that? Why was it bad? I think a lot of it was that. A big part of it was that Mitzi. was really sick the owner mitzi shore and they really know how they wanted to run the store without her I think The other Comedians went to other clubs I think because there was no one really running the club. A lot of Comedians Kinda just came in and took over the place would just go on all night. You know big four or five comics that were the big names of their and they would come in all night in do like. Sets you know and it just wasn't a well run room. and. I, think. Social media hadn't really kind of picked up to the place where they could really.

"World other than Mitzi, it's Richard or is everyone used to call me when we were here? Rich? That's the voice of Mike Binder, who's the writer and director of Showtime's new five part documentary, Siri's, The Comedy store. Bind her first got on stage that Sunset Strip comedy Club a long, long time ago when he was 18 years old. His biggest success came much later in 2001 when he wrote, directed and starred in the HBO comedy Siri's The Mind of the Married Man. And now Binder serves as our tour guide through what essentially is the history of comedy since the seventies. If he and Showtime and waited two more years to release this Siri's. It would mark the 50th anniversary of the comedy store, which Mitzi Shore co founded in 1972. But why wait? A story in binders. Hands is both timely and timeless. Many of the comics interviewed for this program, like in the comedy store to a comedy college. Really? It seems more like a comedy high school. Their cliques and teacher's pets, Rebels and delinquents. And in a place where everyone is the class clown binder emerges is the veteran comic with an everyman perspective. When he offers his own perspective, talking about Richie Pryor or anybody else he saw working that room it's worth hearing. And when he reminisces with everyone from David Letterman and Jay Leno to Whoopi Goldberg and Marc Maron, they open up to him like they're swapping tales of a high school reunion. They talk a lot about Mitzi Shore, who began running the club solo in 1974 and stayed involved until her death two years ago. Many of the comics binder interviews, female and male do their vocal imitations of her. Not all the stories. They're happy ones. Even though this documentary has the cooperation of the shore family, it's honest and unblinking enough to tackle the darker times. The death of young comic Freddy Prince. The time. Many of the comics including Letterman, went on strike too demand they get paid for their appearances on stage. And the comics talking openly with Binder are very candid telling stories about Mitzi that are anything but flattering. At this comedy store. Siri's is more than just a history of the club. It's also a history of modern comedy. How Johnny Carson and TV sitcoms changed the landscape, as did the advent of cable TV and comedy specials. And how acts like Pryor really pushed the envelope? And best of all, this documentary is the story of the evolution of dozens of individual comics. There's a lot of talk about process and daring to fail. And what's obvious While watching the Showtime special is that stand up comics have a tendency to remember bits from other comics acts that even the people who performed them have long for gotten But thanks to home movies and other archive footage, we get the witness those bits. For example, when Bob Saget talks to Mike Binder, about one particularly esoteric stand up bit by Michael Keaton, who pretends to read from a tiny two inch comic that came wrapped around some bubble gum Michael Keaton stand up. It was all conceptual. He would read a bazooka Joe bubble gum. Rapper that had fortunate Remember Bazooka Joe Gum. I just read it to you now, you might not laugh, but I think it's very funny, says Bazooka. Joe has a clock in his hand, you know, and Toby says what you're doing Okay? Joe says. I'm throwing a clock out the window, he says. Why? Joe says I wanted to see time fly. He says. Time. Bazooka Joe. It's rather ethereal Subject isn't thiss documentary contains plenty of laughs to make it very entertaining. But it says a lot at the same time about fame about the drive to succeed and about both competition and friendship. Such topics as sexism and racism are addressed, frankly also In putting this all together, Binder has access to a seemingly endless stack of candid photos taken at the club and uses them very well. He also folds in some very specific music choices on the soundtrack, ending each episode on one emotional peak or another. "He had me meet him at KTLA that which is the first studio on Sunset Boulevard was the first time I've ever been in a TV studio or south. I went to his office. And he goes, you know, we're doing this still there. It's not even there anymore is. I mean, I I don't know highway right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that tower still there forget it. It's the first time my entree into broadcast. So I go into his office. And he has tried to make the the secretary laughing. That's very good. Are you here tomorrow? I'll go. Yeah. I guess some comic dropped out so baby ma'am bomb had something to do that day. But it was it was I did it with Mike binder and Gallagher. Everybody channeling everybody did it everybody. But I didn't know what it was. Yeah. So I went on. And did you do five shows in one day, they pay you to three hundred dollars a show? So in one day five shows, I made a thousand dollars in one day acting like an idiot. It's the first time I got any money, and they and the guy I said, said I'm. I'm not from here. He got me permit a temporary permit to to work here. And then it went back to Canada. And back to work, and what happens box of Dick's never got them through drop that we got these then got into this business with toothbrushes and Flosse's floss the same. I was always trying to we'll in deal and working in an angle working. But that was fun for me too. Yeah. But I started getting calls, and I got a call from the Mike Douglas show and the Mike Douglas show said would you like to come down and do it? I went and did the Mike Douglas show, and then I flew back home. And then I then I got a call from the Merv Griffin show every time you come you working at the store. Yeah. A little bit. But then I would get six hundred dollars. You know, they said when I got make me laugh, he said have your agent call. I didn't want to say, I don't have an agent. So I called Yuk yuks and the manager of Yuk yuks was this guy David who has since. You know? It didn't end. Well, would there David wasn't really a comedy manager? Yeah. But I said say your mind manager. So David said he was my manager. And he made it they'll got me scale. And I didn't even know I was so far out of show business. I didn't even know about ten percent or fifteen rights and sure so David took a third. Yeah. He said, I'll take a third two thirds of two hundred dollars or three hundred dollars. I I made two hundred and he got one hundred and ultimately it ends up that way between the lawyer the Asian demand. But this is one guy needed a manager and agent, and you know, David's also the guy that said I and I did Merv Griffin. Gene Simmons saw me on Merv Griffin of kiss fame. And he said my girlfriend's playing in in Vegas. We we were watching you in bed last night where you open up for her. And I said, okay, his girlfriend happened to be. He was living share. No, Diana Ross. What? Yes. Yeah. So I became Diana. Ross is opening act. I didn't know that gene. Simmons and Diana Ross, absolutely. And he gave me my job. Now, I'm in Vegas doing that. And then David essentially says I managed Howie Mandel, and I got him out. And then brought his next kid out. Jim Carey, you know, we have since both moved on from David. He's still around though. So what was your relationship with Mitzi shore over there when she was really supportive of me, you know? So she saw that. I got make me laugh. I had a lot of it was held for me at the comedy store because I came out once got make me laugh, I said to my wife, and then the Merv Griffin show, I went out and got three hundred dollars, and then I got three hundred dollars. And then I went and worked at Caesars which was held right for Diana Ross. They didn't like me..

"I got chased a lot. I did get I got was good runner. I and I had to be, but I always loved just fucking with people. I love that. You don't want it. Because that's probably when people say, what makes you laugh or who makes you laugh real people. Always make me laugh don't like jokes hate jokes. Really? I really appreciate a good joke though. I understand it. But I can't I talked about authentic. He told me two guys walked into a bar. You know, if they didn't, you know, and I wasn't there and you weren't there. Okay. Something weird happens. But it didn't really happen. But when. You get to like it. When you get to the comedy store, and you're immersed in it the process. Oh, like, let's go back to how'd you get there your work? So I I I got this. Great thing. I was gonna make a million dollars in seventy eight. I got the rights in Canada to the uncle Sherman. Flasher doll and the Sherman. Flasher doll was a dull like stuffed doll, and when you opened his coat his dick came rose up. That's that's a better. That's later. You're younger than me this before it'd be none of the riser fabric. There was nothing. There was nothing technical about. Anyway, I was going to sell this all over Canada. Oh, yeah. Big hit. So they shipped. It. It got stopped at the border is pornographic stuff. So brilliant thought I had shipped it all back, and I had them detached the penises and testicles from the dolls we shipped the dolls up, and then they ship the penises separately penises got stopped at the border. Yeah. And penises. Yeah. Yeah. So I had to come down the California where the manufacturer was or the agent was I'm going to do business here. I came down here to LA to do business estate at the height on sunset business to to to try to get the Dicks released Dick's released. Yeah. Yes. And I knew Mike binder because Mike binder had played, yuck. Yeah. He said, I can get you on at the comedy store. So I didn't aspire to you know, I just had. You've been doing you. You know, I had gone on. Yes. Is the answer. The short answer is. Yes. And but with no thought of this possibly being a career, right? No aspirations of make you know. I was so excited that I found this thing. But it was like my my Thursday night poker game. You have bigger plans, you're sewing, dick. Dell's. Right. Right. But what are the chances of some guy in Toronto from From you you know, know? from Detroit is going to go to California, and I'm gonna make a living. I knew I had nothing. There's no way there was no way. But it was fun on. There was a lot of like minded people at yuck. Yuck. So it was a fun club. Let's go to the Y and play one on one bakery. Khokar some people go to a disco three times a week and dance. I still think of it that way even as professional comic like going to the club to see the fellas and me too. So that was it. So I told binder because he was I was three thousand miles away from home. He says I can get you on at the comedy store. It's Monday night. Let me get you on. And I'll tell them it's your good. So I went on at the comedy store. And there was this guy in the audience, George foster and George foster had a comedy game show called make me laugh. I did not know about it. Because it didn't Aaron Canada Bobby van was the host and I walked off the stage and after doing a three minutes set, and he goes you ever done television. I go no goes wanna do TV? I thought this is so fucking LA. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I wonder if the TV he said. Come to my office. And you did the quite bit. I did the glove. And okay, okay. And..
