"Slash within Reach. Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner in Smith incorporated registered broker dealer From NPR news. This is all things considered. I'm Mary Louise Kelly and I'm Elsa Chang. More than half a million ballots were rejected in the primary elections due to errors or miss deadline, says NPR reported earlier this spring. That raised concerns that with a much higher turnout in November, millions more ballots would be tossed. But As NPR's Pam Fessler reports that didn't happen. Florida resident Kurt Nielsen was very careful when he went to vote this fall. He did it early and deposited his mail in ballot in a drop box provided by Miami Dade County. So early voting Dropbox Check the supervisor of Elections website a couple days later, and it was tabulated. So it worked Swell, which was a big relief because in 2018, his ballot did not count. It arrived too late despite being mailed more than a week before Election Day. The same thing happened earlier this year to tens of thousands of primary voters. And with so many more people voting by mail this November, the fear was that millions of ballots would be rejected due to miss deadlines, missing or mismatch, signatures and other mistakes. Instead, rejections went down in places like North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Florida and elsewhere. The overall rejection rates were less than half of a percent. Daniel Smith, the political scientist at the University of Florida Says out of almost five million mail in ballots cast in his state, fewer than 9000 were rejected a much lower rate than in previous elections. And he says it wasn't because voters made fewer mistakes. The rates of ballots being flagged for problems wasn't any lower than in past elections. It's just that individuals were able to cure their ballots in a timely fashion. Make sure that their ballots would count. As in many other states this year, Florida made it easier for voters to fix or cure their ballots. For example, mail in ballots included space where voters could provide their email address or phone number. That allowed election officials as well as campaigns and interest groups to contact voters more quickly about possible mistakes so they could be fixed on time. Jared Dearing, executive director of Kentucky's Board of Elections, says his state also took steps to help absentee voters after more than 25,000 ballots were rejected in the June primary. So what we tried to do is create one Uniformity of process and to to give some pretty clear guidelines to the counties of what could be counted. What couldn't be can, he said Some counties were discarding ballots for reasons that others did not. Such as a voter signing the envelope in the wrong place. The state also created an online portal where voters could apply for an absentee ballot, track its progress and be alerted of potential problems. That helped cut rejections dramatically to about 2500 votes in November during says something else helped to a monumental shift in voter behavior. Is that all those warnings about tossed ballots and postal delays really sunk in for the first time, voters were not waiting until the last day to mail these things. They were all mailing them weeks ahead of part. It's a teachable moment, right? Amber McReynolds, CEO of the National Voted Home Institute, sees one silver lining. The fact that so many primary ballots were rejected helped voters learn how to do it right. You get your ballot rejected, then you're probably not gonna make that mistake again. And, ironically, some election officials think President Trump's repeated attacks on mail in voting also helped keeping the issue front and center. Voters heard over and over again how important it was to follow the rules. McReynolds hopes that states learned from this year's experience and find more ways to make voting by mail easier and problem free. But initial signs aren't encouraging. Republican lawmakers and Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia and elsewhere are citing Trump's baseless claims that mail in voting leads to widespread fraud, and they're already talking about ways to restrict it. If only, they say to restore confidence in the system. Pam Fessler NPR news Who owns the dance moves in a viral video. "Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner in Smith incorporated registered broker dealer Even as President Trump gets exposed for his phony claims of massive election fraud, they might nonetheless have an effect on future election law. Like ways to make it harder to vote by mail on the next Brian Lehrer show election law experts were needed. Tolson and Benjamin Ginsberg compared notes on what lessons from the 2020 election should be learned and made more permanent in our voting systems. Brian Lehrer show at 10 A.m. on W. N. Y C. This is morning edition from NPR News. I'm David Greene in Los Angeles. And I'm Noel King in Washington, D. C. Good morning. Last night, President Trump pardoned or commuted the sentences of 20 people, including some whose cases did not even meet Department of Justice standards for the review that is supposed to proceed a pardon. They include former Republican congressman correct convicted of corruption. People who pled guilty in the Russia investigation and security contractors convicted of killing civilians in Iraq. NPR's Carrie Johnson has been following this one. Good morning, Carrie. Good morning. So this is quite a list of people. What names stand out to you. Well, first. The names that stand out are four men who worked his contractors for the company called Blackwater. They took part in an incident in Iraq in 2007 in a busy traffic area. They used guns and grenades on a crowd of unarmed civilians. I was in court for their sentencing hearing five years ago. One boy who died named Ali was nine years old. His mother asked the judge. Why did they kill my son? His brother told the court. Blackwater came to Iraq is a security company. But it didn't secure anything. This incident really strained international relations. Blackwater, of course, was founded by Eric Prince, a big supporter of President Trump. He's also the brother of education secretary Betsy DeVos. So we see the president's connections there. There are also the lawmakers convicted lawmakers who are the former members of Congress who the president pardoned their three Republicans who served in Congress until the Justice Department went after them. Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of New York were pardoned and then Trump commuted or shortened the sentence. Of Steve Stockman of Texas, the president said. Stockman is 64 years old and he's at higher risk of contracting Cove in 19. All of them were brought to justice on charges related to corruption or fraud. President. Trump said he'd been lobbied by other members of Congress to show them some mercy. Okay. And then the Russia probe who did he pardoned who was involved in the Russia investigation. Noel President, Trump really seems to want to undo all of the work of the special counsel Robert Mueller. He's already helped some of the other defendants. And then this week he pardoned George Papadopoulos, who lied to the FBI. Papadopoulos is the young adviser to the Trump campaign who helped jumpstart that whole investigation by dragging two bragging to a diplomat over drinks in a bar in the White House says that pardon quote helps correct the wrong that Mueller's team inflicted on so many people. Trump also pardoned Alexander's Juan Ah, lawyer who lied to the FBI in the course of the investigation. Notably, very still, almost a month before Trump leaves office. Should we expect more pardons before Joe Biden is inaugurated? Absolutely. They're likely to be more pardons of people behind bars for drug crimes. People are supported by nonprofit groups that advocate for prisoners who they say deserve a second chance, but they're also likely going to be more pardons that are extremely politically sensitive. Reports from the White House suggests Trump could pardon people connected his company or his family members, or even try to pardon himself. There are very few limits on the president's power to issue these pardons, Trump has pushed the limits for nearly four years. There is no reason to think he's going to stop now. Today it's worth noting is is a day at the Department of Justice is it's the last day of Attorney general Bill Bars tenure who isn't in charge of the DOJ Once he leaves the deputy attorney general, Jeffrey Rosen, will be at the wheel for the final weeks of the Trump presidency at the Justice Department. He's going to be under a lot of pressure from the White House. Trump wants him to appoint special counsels of prosecutor look at Trump's baseless claims of election fraud, and Trump also wants a special prosecutor to look at the taxes of President elect Joe Biden's son Hunter, The U. S attorney in Delaware is already doing that and Bill Barr told reporters this week. There's no basis to appoint extra special prosecutors. He thinks the investigation's being handled responsibly. We will see if his successor, Jeffrey Rosen, can resist some of that intense criticism that is likely to come at him from President Trump in the next month. Carrie Johnson covers the Department of Justice. Thanks carry my pleasure. Alright, Covert 19 has become the leading cause of death in parts of Latin America. The region has been particularly hard hit, and that's because of a combination of health, social and economic factors. Here's more from NPR's Jason Beaubien. In Peru on all Saints Day. People traditionally visit the graves of loved ones, particularly loved ones who've recently passed away. They bring flowers, food and loaves of specially baked bread to their graves. This year, However, things were different level Lance a cemetery on the outskirts of Lima. Lines of police and soldiers in riot gear blocked the entrance to the graveyard.
