"Because they're so desperate for pass rush and this this draft aft- class if he hits with a couple of those cornerbacks if owes shane's immunised turns into turns out to be a pretty decent player this draft class could could also be a good one so there are some signs that areas of the roster are improving but but it it is all gonna come come back to whether jones is what gettleman thinks he is yeah and i agree with everything he said and i do think these past two off-season especially the draft but also guys like zeitler are building blocks. I mean our quality young players. <hes> i think the defensive tackle position you mentioned the corner position. We'll see you on the edge guys but there's upside there <hes> so i do think you know certainly at guard with hernandez barclay star. We know that so. I do think there are pieces is in place but like said too. I mean i mean jones is going to be the key of course organizations and you know. I think ideally takes over sooner than later. Shows promise isn't going to go to the pro bowl this year anything and then they have one more big off season around them then. We might be having a different conversation at you're now. Let's take a quick break for a word from our sponsors and we'll come right back here on the valentine's views tied cast and continue our conversation with matt williamson. Hey i'm spencer hall. I'm holly anderson. I'm ryan nanny. I'm jason kirk and.

"I just don't see it. It's interesting you went to the contributors because i was actually going to go there our next and it sort of the other side of the coin. I mean here. I am saying you know what if you're not a hall of famer the first x number of times. You're on on the ballot then then. Why are you won the seventh or eighth time. You're on the ballot and i'm one who for years and years now has beaten the drum for for former giants general manager george young as a hall of famer. I for the life of me have never understood why this man who did so much to turn around the giants franchise a guy who still referenced in the hallways when you talk talk to people there a guy who many of his philosophies still impact that organization today i for the life of me understand why he can't even get to be a finalist. I'm kind of with you on that one to it to me when you talk about contributors to the n._f._l. He seems like the definition of it to me. I mean he in a way. I guess pun intended. He was a giant in his field. The old and i do think what's different about them as opposed to the committee that we just saw the veteran players we talked about is i kind of feel like the contributors. There's coaches got a little bit of the short end of the stick for a lot airs. He did a ton yeah he did in you know so it's <hes> it's it's to me i just i don't understand that. I hope that that this time with the expanded now number of contributors going in. I hope this time you know the hall of fame voters will will will rectify that but i'm not optimistic because as i said he doesn't seem to even get the support to <hes> to be considered a finalist yep if it doesn't happen this year. I think he's in trouble. Yeah you're probably right. It's <hes> it's it's tough but anyway. Let's <hes> let's talk about the the current new york giants and you know there was an interesting piece from from bill barnwell in e._s._p._n. The other day listing the giants as despite fight you know everything that went on this off season and and the disparaging thoughts about dave gettleman i mean he was listing the giants as one of his five teams that he felt was most likely to improve. You know not that. He felt like they were very good but he was looking at that five win bar and thinking that they should do better than that means d. Do you think that this is a team that that despite all of all all of the the controversy over cattlemans moves is more or less pointed in the right direction. I have mixed feelings on that and red barn. Wells call them. I i like him. I think he's a really good analyst. He has a really strong football outsiders background in background and the antics tell you that the giants should rebound you know for all the reasons bill mentioned and i urge everyone to check that out but i'm not sure that piss passes. Ask the smell test for me. I mean it's a i think it's a difficult division. I mean the two teams that are clearly better than them and i have a hard time envisioning asian them having even league average quarterback play in two thousand nineteen <hes> i think cattleman has gotten too much criticism criticism. I mean i. I wrote a couple articles for you. Guys mentioning how i thought he created a nice nest for landing spot for a quarterback <hes> working working on the offensive line. The defense is going to take time but it's a a youth movement there <hes> i just think that in the end i wouldn't have taken jones. I you know i just don't think he's worthy of that kind of pick and that's where the future i mean it's really dependent on one guy. Unfortunately maybe he hits. Maybe he proves ruseler wrong. Many quarterbacks have but he would not have been my selection and yeah. I mean i've been wrong about quarterbacks before but jones to me was not a first round talent alan. He's not a future franchise quarterback. He would not have been my selection but unfortunately well. I mean if this happens a lot of teams..

Matt how you doing today? I am fantastic. How are you? Great to talk to you. I'm good. Yeah. We you and I have done this a couple times, but it's been a little while. So so I'm glad to I'm glad to catch up with you. Absolutely. Absolutely. So let's let's let's get right into it. The New York Giants are nothing. These days if not interesting. How would you describe, you know, let's let's not get into an individual discussion of Beckham or Eli or whatever yet overall view of the giants off season. Are you confused deal understand it to you like it to you hate it? You know, where are you on what you've seen from from the giants? So far this off season. It's a little confusing having there's no doubt about that. And you see these offseason ranks, and they're always at the bottom, and I can see why people would be frustrated, you know, boy, you get rid of Beckham and pay deal with a little bit here in Pittsburgh my hometown. I mean, you lose AB lose bell. How can that be a good thing? However, the move that I didn't understand was not franchising Collins. But the everything else I think has created but using the word nest a lot I think this is a really comfortable nest for a Haskins or an incoming. Quarterback to sit in that room and learn with from ally, maybe sit lake in an Alex Smith Mahomes situation, you pick up Zeitler for a guy you might cut them in a really good guard the line now might become a strength. Barclays the ultimate would be use my Mr. mom reference for a young quarterback. And I know everyone's going isn't del great for that on the field. Yes..

"So we'll see if the giants come away from these meetings. You know with the idea that there's a guy that they really really want to have in their building the other thing. I wanted to mention was Dave Gettleman appearance. The other day on good morning football interviewed with Peter Schrager. And repeated a lot of the things that he said to reporters recently, you know, regarding the Beckham trade regarding borough peppers regarding the off season his stance on ally. Manning all of those things the one remark that he did make two Schrager that that I wanted to focus on really. A simple one when he said that he thought the giants had had a good off season. I've taken the stance that you know, that we have to wait and see how the decisions that Gettleman has made to this point trading Odal Beckham leading Landon Collins, go sticking with Eli manning for the time being trading Livy, Vernon all of the moves that he's made we have to wait and see how all of that plays out. I don't think it's time yet where you can say the giants have had a good off season or a bad off season. I think that they've set themselves up in a situation where with twelve draft picks they have lots of room to maneuver can they get the quarterback of the future that they want. Can they get a couple of impact players to help their defense? Do they have enough at wide receiver? Having added golden Tate. You know as a veteran. Replacement for owed L Beckham. Do they have enough at cornerback? We have to wait and see we have to you know, how all of that plays out. And how Gettleman in the giants handled the draft. Then I think we will be able to judge whether or not the giants had a good off season. They've put themselves in a position where they have a lot of flexibility with the twelve draft picks. We've said before they have, you know, roughly one hundred million dollars in cap space, you know, going into next off season. So it, but for me, it's a wait. And see I'm not willing to say they've had a good off season. If had a bad off season they've certainly had an interesting and somewhat unpredictable off season. I think that you know, Gettleman is most definitely putting his stamp on the giants trying to build the kind of program that he and Pat Shurmur want to have you know, one that's about team more nets about building a roster. That's as deep as possible, you know, that that has, you know, good players up and down, you know, a a roster Anna locker room that that team over individual. And I I'm in still in that, wait and see mode. I think it's too early as I said to judge whether it's been a good or a bad off season. Let's just see what happens a month from now in the NFL draft. And then we'll all have our thoughts on that. Let's turn right now to an into the interview that I spoke about earlier with Matt Williamson of locked on NFL which will play for you after a short break for a word from our sponsors..

"Thank you never pass on a guy you think could be a franchise quarterback but the windows very small and i think the time is help to defense you know that's going to be the priority all the way through the draft maybe finding a successor slash backup the love bill i i'm with you if the goal is with a thirty eight year old qb and the best receiver since jerry rice and that is not hyperbole the numbers will support that that's the case or maybe randy moss well however you wanna cut that up he's in the top three of the super bowl areas antonio brown levian bell in the right in the middle of his prime there to me yes i say get another db get a hybrid db i mean i i love the ability to to move those guys around and play different positions on the back in there i i don't mind them getting getting the big safety out of if he's sitting there from bama one of those guys i don't mind doubling down at that position there but anyway listen matt williamson what a delight i could go on and on and on and on some more with you but let's kim it's i don't maybe again before the draft maybe after it and get your review of that either either way we're rooting for you with williamson football dot com one of the one of the great wealth you just heard i don't have to convince you you just heard his insight on what's coming up here in the twentyeight nfl draft matt williamson stay in touch and and like i say best wishes with with the new venture here absolutely actually also let's go pence to absolutely repeat all the best.

"Oh yes but i'm also very much a jackson supporter and talk tomlin took a chance on vick i bet tomlin loves jackson i mean jackson is a more accurate michael victim you better cater your offense to him though i mean without question i mean where he goes in how they handle him is going to be absolutely instrumental but for the steelers specifically i would take safety or a linebacker and make a run this year and then the oth of the year from now last question for you then as far as that goes you say you were high on patrick mahomes we'll see how he gets out in two twenty eighteen to like them a lot and there was a lot of buzz that he should have been starting at some point during the year but it seems the 2017 kansas city chiefs okay so if mahomes works out two years from now no chief's fan is going to look back and lament what happened in two thousand seventeen but you could make a case that that team was real close to super bowl ready in two thousand seventeen and with that tenth overall pick they could've used it on a piece that would have been a starting difference acre defensively or somewhere else out on the field to help alex smith out the steelers in two thousand eighteen seemed to be that in that same position the forget about twenty nine thousand and beyond it feels to me the way things are getting structured here the way things are lining up the two thousand eighteen steelers are let's go for it we gotta get it this you which by the way which is why which would have got after the honey badger a little bit more than they did but either way the kidney not if that's the premise they can't take lamar jackson they gotta take somebody who can help them today and if that is the case who is that guy well i think the linebacker position is absolutely going to be top priority i don't know the vander escher evans will still be there that late but i think if they are that's an easy decision otherwise you may be go safety i think burnett will probably play some pseudo linebacker i think you'll see more big nickel i think you'll see more dime with three safeties on the field but i'm with you i mean i do.

"That's the mvp at the national football league yeah and i don't have a strong feeling on this one and because kind of my favorite guy went no longer should did it and even when wentz was on top i thought brady was a little more deserving but wasn't getting the credit and then went fell off so you would think boy it's easy to go to brady but i didn't think brady i mean for people don't know the postseason doesn't matter you have to stop thinking about it this second week seventeen ends and i didn't think brady ended the season with a flourish bite mvp standards so then the obvious choice and is what about girlie but the mvp's kind of a flawed discussion for me because it almost should be most i will quarterback most valuable other guy i guess i'll still give it to brady but girlie was awfully good and i know people in this fantasy driven world think oh it has to be gurley and yes they very much leaned on them and he's a great player but he's just not more valuable you know that's why i think the the the movie wardens kind of flawed i mean obviously the most valuable was always a quarterback that's a good point and i think you're right i think the most valuable player will always be a quarterback if we're really talking the value to a team it's going to end up being a quarterback there was a couple of games there especially that dolphins game where brady was not great but i think if you really look at the entire 16 weeks season you think about no joined that'll men you think about what their defense was doing early you know the first four weeks for the patriots and you look at the numbers that brady put up.
